Along with almost every area resident this summer, I have done everything possible to avoid mosquitoes. So when I was assigned to go look for mosquitoes and mosquito larvae with Ray Fraser, a light trap foreman for Clarke

mosquito control company, I was a little hesitant. We were in a St. Charles park, inspecting one of the traps the company set there using a swamp water formula to attract the little buggers. Fraser has an actual recipe for swampy

water using rabbit food, and it seemed to work like a charm, as dozens of mosquitoes flew around the netted trap. We then trudged through high grasses to the pond area so Fraser could take a sample of water to find mosquito larvae.

After a couple of dips with a cup, which was extended on a pole, we found a few larvae samples.

Summer Sunset Races at Geneva High School

WHAT: The Fox River Trail Runners will host the 18th annual Summer Sunset Races.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Teddy DeMask, of Batavia, didn’t expect he would meet a celebrity after starting a job at Bed Bath and Beyond in Geneva earlier this year.

DeMask, 16, who will be a junior this fall at Batavia High School, said he met celebrity Jenny McCarthy at the store May 13, shortly after he started working there. After getting married last year at Hotel Baker in St. Charles, McCarthy and her husband, singer and

actor Donnie Wahlberg, are buying a house in St. Charles.

“This one guy from the other side of the store noticed her and came over and told me,” DeMask said. “I went to ask her if she needed any help. She was super nice.”

DeMask then asked if he could get a photo with her.

“She said, ‘Yeah, but make sure you help all my friends over there, too,’ ” DeMask said. “She was definitely down to earth, not wanting all the attention.”

McCarthy then snapped a photo of them on DeMask’s phone. His friends were impressed with his encounter with McCarthy, DeMask said.

“They were pretty psyched that I met a former Playboy model and a very beautiful, famous person,” DeMask said.

The second season of the A&E docu-series “Donnie Loves Jenny” is underway. It deals with the couple’s move from New York City to St. Charles. “Donnie Loves Jenny” follows McCarthy and Wahlberg from their wedding at Hotel Baker in St. Charles in August 2014 through their lives as newlyweds.

McCarthy was raised in the Chicago area. She had previously rented a house in Geneva.

“The difference between St. Charles and New York City, in my mind, is it’s just a much slower pace,” McCarthy said during a recent episode.

DeMask said he hopes to see her back at the store.

“We’re supposed to say, ‘See you next time,’ so that’s what I said when she left,” he said.

Batavia MainStreet to host Cocktails in the Park

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia MainStreet Executive Director Jamie Saam said she hopes this weekend’s expected warm weather will help bring more people Saturday to Appleton Park for the organization’s fourth annual Cocktails in the Park fundraiser.

Last year’s event raised $12,000 for Batavia MainStreet, Saam said. The organization is responsible for many community events in Batavia, such as the Batavia House Walk, BatFest, Art in Your Eye and others.

“I would love to raise more money than last year,” Saam said. “We think we’ll get 400 people at the event.”

The dedication is the culmination of an effort started in 2010 by Dr. C. Alfred Patten to have a piece of public art in the city that honors volunteerism, as exemplified by Max and Doris Hunt, the release stated. The sculpture was designed by Guy Bellaver to meet the Hunt family’s vision of a work of art that captured Max and Doris Hunt’s spirit, according to the release.

“Over time, our committee realized that Max and Doris were, in essence, exemplars of volunteerism – the engine that drives the best of communities,” Patten wrote in the release.

MAPLE PARK – Seven fire departments responded Thursday after a small explosion inside an elevator lift in a grain bin at the Elburn Cooperative Co.’s seed division, 2N374 Meredith Road, Maple Park.

“The motor up top was hot, which is probably where the problem originated from,” Maple Park Fire Chief Kevin Peterson said.

There were no injures, and a damage estimate wasn’t immediately avail-

able, Peterson said.

Phil Farrell, the company’s president and general manager, said they called the incident in at 4:50 p.m.

“It appears to have been a grain dust situation. It happens very infrequently,” Farrell said. “We’ve never had it happen here, but it is something we watch out for.”

The incident still is under investigation.

Emergency crews from Sycamore, Big Rock, Maple Park, Elburn, Kaneville, Fox River and DeKalb responded to the call.

Saint-Vil, who is from Haiti, said shoe donations are vital. He said children must walk miles to get to school.

Hill said the store would be collecting shoes, backpacks, tank tops and shorts, as well as monetary donations.

Clothes and shoes should be for those ages 5 to 18.

Hill is conducting the collection with her daughter, Alexa, and her son, Tyler.

“Alexa, Tyler and I thought we would help,” she said.

Saint-Vil said he gets to Haiti a few times a year, and he will bring the donations with him. He said Hill’s efforts are appreciated.

“She has a big heart,” he said. “She contacted me and asked if there was any way she could help us.”

ST. CHARLES – The leader of the Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau for 10 years is moving back to the private sector.

Today is Amy Egolf’s last day at the bureau. She accepted a position as the director of sales and marketing at the Hilton Chicago/Indian Lakes Resort in Bloomingdale.

“It has just been a marvelous experience,” Egolf said of her time at the bureau, which began in 2005.

Egolf said she made the decision to leave the nonprofit bureau in part because of the state’s fiscal challenges. The bureau faced funding cuts this year from the Illinois Office of Tourism and the city of St. Charles, which reduced funding by 10 percent this year for various groups based in the city.

The bureau’s current associate director, DeAnn Wagner, will take on Egolf’s duties in the interim with the help of

Jim Breen, the bureau’s board vice president. Wagner has asked not to be considered for Egolf’s position.

Egolf said she has updated the job description and a search Amy Egolf will begin this summer for her replacement.

KANEVILLE – When Pat Hill heard of an opportunity to help collect shoes to benefit needy children in Haiti, she said she was eager to play a role.

Hill, who runs Hill’s Country Store in Kaneville, set up a collection drive at her store, is at 2S133 Harter Road. Donors have dropped off more than 200 pairs of used shoes, and Hill is hoping for even more.

The drive goes through the end of July, but she said she would accept donations after that.

“We don’t know how lucky we are here in the United States,” Hill said.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Veterinarian Kurt Klepitsch knows pet owners have plenty of options when it comes to their animals’ medical care, and he is – and always has been – appreciative of their business, he said.

To celebrate the Gateway Veterinary Clinic’s 30th anniversary, he and his staff will host a free picnic for the community from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 1.

The St. Charles clinic, at 3225 W. Main St., was established by the now-retired Joseph Busch. Klepitsch joined the facility in 1990 and has been the majority owner since Busch retired.

Klepitsch’s desire to become a veterinarian stemmed from childhood, he said, explaining he would go with the family dog to veterinary appointments.

He said he feels fortunate and privileged to work in the field as long as he has and enjoys the variety the work brings. Many instances bring gratification, he said.

“When things work out, you feel good about it,” Klepitsch said.

Driver charged with DUI after crashing near Hotel Baker ST. CHARLES – A motorist who crashed near Hotel Baker last week claimed he was having a diabetic reaction before police determined he was driving drunk, according to a St. Charles police report.

About 10 p.m. July 15, officers responded to a complaint of an intoxicated driver traveling west on East Main Street “at a high rate of speed and swerving,” according to the report.

According to the report, Pounds told medics he was having a diabetic reaction, a claim medics confirmed was false.

Pounds denied he had been drinking, but police reported he believed he was in Elgin; was unable to maintain his balance; appeared confused, disoriented and easily distracted; did not recall getting into a traffic crash; and did not recall

how his vehicle got damaged.

Later, he also stated he was not diabetic but had high blood pressure, according to the report.

Officers requested he perform field sobriety tests, but police reported he was unable to follow instructions.

Pounds, 62, of the 1300 block of Normandy Lane, Bartlett, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and two counts of improper lane use.

He is expected in court at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 19.

New same-day registration, voting rules could cost Kane County $2M

and BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County could face nearly $2 million in additional costs because of an extension of the grace-period registration for voters bill.

Signed by then-Gov. Pat Quinn in January, Senate Bill 172 requires same-day voter registration at every polling place for countywide elections if a county’s population is greater than 100,000, or if it has an electronic poll book – an electronic list of all eligible voters in the county.

Kane County has more than 515,000 residents, so it will have to foot the cost of adding two election officials and one voting machine to more than 95 polling places in the county, Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham said.

workers will be deputy registrars who will have to be paid, said Suzanne Fahnestock, chief deputy clerk and director of elections.

In order to accommodate the same-day registration, the county also will need to perform software updates and participate in an Electronic Registration Information Center to keep track of eligible voters, according to government documents.

“The income of the county has gone down drastically,” Cunningham said, referring to more than $2 million lost when the county jail stopped housing federal prisoners.

“It’s been mandated, so they have to do it.”

Also, it takes 13 minutes to register people to vote, Cunningham said.

“Lines could be blocks long at every polling place,” Cunningham said.

The Kane County Board

voted recently to support a resolution opposing the law as a new, unfunded mandate.

The legislation will affect 20 of the state’s 102 counties.

DeKalb, DuPage, Will and McHenry counties also are among those affected.

“This is going to be a very expensive mandate for county governments for counties who fit the criteria, and Kane County is one of them,” said State Rep. Keith Wheeler, R-Oswego.

In the past, Kane County had five same-day voter registration locations in St. Charles, Carpentersville, two in Elgin and one at the Kane County Government Center in Geneva, Cunningham said.

Wheeler and State Rep. Steven Andersson, R-Geneva, co-sponsored legislation, House Bill 2936, that would counteract the mandate by requiring only one same-day registration site per 10,000

residents in counties with more than 100,000 people.

It remains in the Rules Committee where it was referred in March.

State Majority Leader Rep. Barbara Flynn Currie, D-Chicago, who is the chairwoman of the Rules Committee, said she supports efforts to make it easier for people to vote, so that bill is not likely to receive additional consideration.

“I believe strongly that people ought to be able to ex-

ercise the franchise and to vote,” Currie said. “Democracy is not a spectator sport.

There is not a lot of enthusiasm among my colleagues to dilute the right to vote and exercise the franchise. I stand behind Senate Bill 172.”

Currie said Kane County should figure out a way to meet this requirement “without spending the county fortune.”

“Other counties are able to meet the mandate without whining,” Currie said.

To the Editor: Our democracy, set in place by our Founding Fathers to be citizen-led, is in danger these days of being taken over by a number of highly wealthy contributors who are busy setting up super PACs (political action committees). The super PACs will be used by these wealthy donors to support the handpicked candidates they choose for every state in the union.

That includes the elections of senators, representatives, governors and, yes, our next president. These PACs are able to raise millions and millions of dollars, commonly from sources undisclosed. It thus is called “dark money.” And these PACs are shifting into high gear to buy our democracy for themselves.

A case in point, the two Koch brothers have boasted openly about their plan to spend about $889 million to seemingly make sure their chosen candidates will be elected in the 2016 elections. And it seems they make no bones about meaning to pick our president also.

It has been said the Koch brothers are but one example of the new face of normal.

The Supreme Court, in its Citizens United ruling, removed the ban on corporations and organizations from using unlimited amounts of their money for direct advocacy support in elections. At the same time, an important safety wall was broken down. But can one really imagine the Founding Fathers saw the First Amendment to the Constitution, giving

the guarantee of freedom of speech, was to be extended to corporations, as well as to citizens? Many of the campaign finance reforms put into place through the efforts of Sen. John McCain (R) and former Sen. Russell Feingold (D) are now in tatters because of Citizens United mischief.

We want meaningful campaign finance reforms, and we need them now. We each owe it to ourselves and to our very futures to be sure to make an informed vote at election times, a privilege people in many countries long for. We need the super PACs to be put in place and forced to concede that our democracy is not for sale.

On May 28, the Cougars visited the Quad Cities River Bandits on a night “Slaughter” – of no relation to St. Francis softball coach Ralph “The

Dentist” Remus of St. Charles – made an appearance.

When the same two teams met at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Thursday, Remus and DiBiase, signing and greeting at a combined age of 127, again enjoyed the warm reception indigenous to life decades after their respective heydays of the mid-1980s and early 1990s.

“The goal for WWE was to make us bigger than life,” Remus said, “which they did.”

So they said, ‘Beer and basketball.’ I said, ‘We can’t do beer, let’s do basketball.’ And so he was hand-picked. When we did it live in front of the crowd, I had to be hardcore on him, so my voice is deep and scared him.

So, it’s, ‘If you don’t get the job done, you don’t get the money,’ (and then) crocodile tears. Ran to his mother. And I got back in the back and everybody’s going, ‘Yes, yes, that was great.’ And I said, ‘I’m glad you’re happy.

“To this day, they say, ‘Did you really do that to that kid?’ I said, ‘Of course not … he got the money.’ ” About two years ago, DiBiase endeared himself to a Scottish child while perusing what he called Scotland’s equivalent of a Wal-Mart.

“A little boy, I’m talking about a kid about six years old, he’s walking down with his grandmother. She’s got him by the hand,” DiBiase said. “As I walk by, he goes, ‘Grandma, it’s the Million Dollar Man.’ I’d have liked to have a cow. You know who I am? I go, ‘No way.’ He said, ‘You’re the Million Dollar Man, aren’t you?’ And I said, ‘Yes, how do you know?’ He said, ‘Video games.’ ” *** Most Cougars with a working knowledge of pro wrestling would consider DiBiase and Remus as “old school,” if they knew much about either man’s accomplishments at all.

Hitting coach Vince Harrison, 35, grew up when that era’s superstars ruled the roost.

Pitching coach Doug Bochtler, who turned 45 this month, still kept a loose pulse on wrestling in his 20s and 30s.

“Yeah, it was cool. It was cool,” Bochtler said. “Good for those guys. They had a good run.

Might as well make some money out of it.”

Right-hander Markus Solbach, 23, a native of Dormagen, Germany, recalls occasionally watching American wrestling in the wee hours of the morning.

“I used to watch it a lot, but it’s kind of fading away a little bit,” Solbach said. “I still like King Booker. Booker T. He was my favorite one.” *** Downers Grove North graduate Lanny Poffo wrestled as “Leapin’ Lanny” and “The Genius” during a lengthy professional career, but admits he didn’t need the latter moniker to make this discovery: “I think it’s more natural that a football player be a wrestler than a baseball player because of the characteristics of a football player,” Poffo said.

More than three decades ago, Poffo’s older brother, Randy, bucked the trend and channeled his future colleague DiBiase’s

sleeperhold finisher. Poffo pursued a lowercase million dollar dream.

Despite batting .500 and .525 in 1970 and 1971, his junior and senior seasons, respectively, at Downers Grove North, Poffo went undrafted by any Major League organization. A catcher, he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals system in 1971, spending three seasons with the club before joining the Cincinnati Reds organization in 1974.

The scouting report on Poffo rarely wavered.

“He was a heck of a hitter,” said Tony Garofalo, a former longtime Cubs trainer who roomed with Poffo while serving the 1972 Gulf Coast League Cardinals in the same capacity. “He wasn’t a five-tool baseball player, you know what I’m saying. He could hit, he could field, he could run a little bit, but he couldn’t throw very well. He would have been a great DH, you know.”

OOOHHH YEAAHH? You might know the late Poffo better by his in-ring persona, “Macho Man” Randy Savage. Turns out the boys’ father, Angelo, a

former professional wrestler, relished teaching his boys about turnbuckles and turning double plays.

“I think with his family background, it was a natural progression,” said Garofalo, who now works with regional athletes through Athletico. “He didn’t make it in baseball, so he joined the family business.”

Savage, er Poffo, who died in 2011, wrestled during offseasons “on the q.t.,” Garofalo said.

During summers, he augmented his $500 monthly salary simply by being social. Sort of.

“That’s not a lot of money, so my father promised him that he would subsidize him,” Lanny Poffo said. “But he didn’t need it because he played cards with the bonus babies and took their money any night he wanted. …

That was his revenge.” *** DiBiase appeared at a Crestwood-based Windy City Thunderbolts game this summer as part of the independent Frontier League club’s summerlong Pro Wresling Thusdays promotion.

He’s due in Green Bay, Wisconsin, in the coming days, and, per usual, may not be able to hold his own when discussing the finer points of baseball.

A nomadic upbringing, the roots of his father’s own pro

wrestling career, limited his access to the national pastime.

“The only place you could get any baseball gear was the Western Auto, and if you were left-handed, you were out of luck.

And I was left-handed,” DiBiase said. “So I had to try and teach myself (to throw) with my right hand, and eventually I got fair at it. I mean, I could hit pretty good, but because of that, you know, my baseball days ended basically by the time I got out of grade school.”

Remus lasted only a few years longer, as his small Minnesota high school made multi-tasking essential.

“In between innings we’d run over to the track and throw the shot put,” Remus said, “and we’d go back to the baseball field and continued the game there.”

DiBiase and Remus joined Cougars manager Mark Grudzielanek – a son of Milwaukee, like that bygone basketball bouncer – in presenting the pregame lineup card, delighting the fans anew.

Moments later, the man in uniform retreated to the Cougars dugout on the first base side. The two men in costume headed for the center field party deck for autographs. The game started and one thing was constant in both locales.

The cheering didn’t stop.

Campton United teams find their national treasures U18s win national title; U16s make semis

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The Campton United Soccer Club took its success to a whole new level this summer.

Not only did the club send two of its teams to the recent National Premier League Finals in Westfield, Indiana, but it saw its U18 team bring home a national championship. The Campton United, or CUSC, U16 team reached the semifinals to finish as one of the top four teams in the state.

Both the NPL Finals and National Cup XIV Finals are hosted by U.S. Club Soccer.

The U18 team, coached by Chad Flanders, Campton’s technical director of coaching, went 3-1-1 in its five games, including a 3-2 victory in the championship match over Soccer Plus Academy of New York.

“It was a great experience

for all of us,” forward Taylor Ortiz said. “To play the way we did and to come home winning it all was awesome.

This team really became best friends, and we wanted to play and win for each other. I think that had a lot to do with why we were so successful.”

Both teams have several players from the Tri-Cities area, including Ortiz and Mitch Dorsey, who both played with St. Charles East last season and were their teams’ respective scoring leaders in the tournament.

Ortiz, along with Wheaton Academy’s Ty Seager, were both named to the 2014 Chronicle all-area first team, and each scored three goals for the U18 team.

Both converted a penalty kick in the semifinal match, a 3-2 (5-4 PK) victory over St. Louis Scott Gallagher Illinois.

Lillie edges Kurosky, then takes title

By ALEX ORTIZ aortiz@shawmedia.com ITASCA – In order to prevent getting nervous on the golf course, St. Charles North junior Kate Lillie just needs to take the lead on one hole.

From there, she is in control and able to play her game.

That method helped her on her way to winning the 35th Chick Evans Junior Amateur at the Itasca Country Club on Thursday. She was able to qualify for match play after opening rounds that were not overwhelming, but she was steady and consistent throughout, and that gave her the mental edge she needed.

“My main goal is to win a hole off the bat,” Lillie said.

“So you have the advantage and you’re able to kind of relax a little bit.”

After a 19-hole round and a win against Blake Betke and a three-hole win against Margaret Hickey, Lillie faced Josie Kurosky of Burlington Central in the semis to begin

Thursday’s play. Lillie took until the second hole to get that edge, going up one, and kept that lead in all but one other hole.

Lillie shot two of her four bogeys and one of her two birdies on the front nine, and the only time Kurosky tied it was at the ninth hole, when she eagled after her only birdie on the eighth hole. Lillie took the lead right back with her second birdie and never looked back, winning the round after 17 holes.

“My drives were definitely not as good as they have been the rest of the week,” Kurosky said. “So that kind of messed me up a little.”

Driving was giving many players frustration as the narrow course forced many shots from roughs with many trees.

In the final round, Lillie faced Maggie Sloan of Lansing. Lillie took her one-hole lead right away and, again with the exception of one hole, led the entire time. She shot 10 pars – including on her first

It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the U18s, however, as the team trailed in each of its three games during group play, but managed to finish the group 1-1-1. The win was a 5-2 decision over Washington East SC, a game in which Seager tallied a goal. Both Seager and Ortiz scored a goal in game two to help CUSC erase a two-goal deficit and earn a 3-3 draw.

“Coming into the weekend, we had a couple teams here that had beaten us earlier in the season,” Seager said. “We just wanted to come into the weekend and show our stuff and try to beat some of those teams.

We trailed every game and that is the remarkable part to me. It just shows how well we work together and I really think our teamwork and how far we have come as a group is really the trigger to our success.”

Although the U18s lost a match in group play, 4-2, to Plus Academy, the team found a chance at retribution when it matched up with the same club in the finals. Seager and Ortiz both scored in the rematch along with 2015 East alum Christian Memije, as CUSC won the title, 3-2.

“Between playing for each other and having coach push us, we never gave up for a second,” Ortiz said.

The road to the semifinals proved slightly smoother for the U16s went. The team went 3-0 in its three group

Dorsey played as a forward for CUSC, despite playing as a defender for most of last season with East.

Campton was riding high into its semifinal match against LA Premier FC, but the U16s fell, 1-0, eliminating the team from the tournament.

“It was tough to go 3-0 in group play and then lose a game like that…1-0,” Dorsey said. “It was kind of a sloppy goal where we didn’t clear it well and their guy was the the right place at the right time and put it in. We had all the momentum in the second half but couldn’t find a way to get a goal.”

But Dorsey said he and his teammates were just happy to qualify for nationals. We weren’t necessarily the most technically-gifted or talented team, but we were so close-knit and had great chemistry and I wouldn’t have wanted to go and play and make these memories that we’ll remember forever with any other group of guys.”

Bad karma and the Cubs My claim to be well educated can be substantiated by several collegiate alumni groups, those online trivia challenges and my association with a classy group of newspaper readers.

Nevertheless, I must confess to be prone to superstitions.

Here’s an example: The 1969 Chicago Cubs. To this day, I feel personally responsible for the heart-breaking crash. They were in first place in their division of the National League for 155 days. Then, in September, they lost 17 of 25 games. I was too visible as a supporter. I went to games with high hopes, dressed as a fan would be. It was my bad karma that led to the downfall.

Things began on a high note. During the opening game at Wrigley, while sitting in a box seat, I saw Willie Smith hit that walk-off home run. The infield – Banks, Kessinger, Beckert and Santo – looked unbeatable. Parking had been easy.

It was a perfect day. That was the first signal.

Sad to report the passing of Bill Armstrong in Lexington, Kentucky.

Bill was our Class of ’56 classmate who stood tall on the basketball court and took leadership in St. Charles High School student affairs. He was an engineering major at the University of Illinois and had a long and successful career at General Electric.

He is survived by his wife, Kathie (Gifford), of Geneva, his children, grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Finally, as it looks like there will be some good weather, try to get outdoors and take a fresh breath, away from the saturation of political items.

Do your homework and participate actively. There’s more than a year before the election or the money runs out. But don’t blame me if the winner is a loser. I’m already getting superstitious.

He told me she has a bad relationship with her divorced parents, so he’s hoping we can bond.

A problem that comes up frequently is, she’s so anxious to show me how skilled and knowledgeable she is, she misses any tips and techniques I try to subtly teach her. I’ll give you an example: When I removed ice cubes from an ice tray, I ran water over the bottom briefly before twisting the tray. She laughed like I was clueless and said, “You don’t have to do that, just twist the tray!” I replied that the water helped release the cubes more cleanly “because of the physics of the warmer water.” She teared up, left the room and told my son (who said to me) that I was being critical of her.

• Skin, hair and nails. The skin can become dry, rough and slightly yellow. Hair becomes coarse, and may fall out. The nails become brittle.

• Cardiovascular effects. Low levels of thyroid hormone can lead to high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol levels. The heart’s pumping ability may fall, increasing the risk of heart fail-

ure, especially in older women.

• Mental effects. Hypothyroidism and depression share many of the same symptoms. These include difficulty concentrating, memory problems, and loss of interest in things that are normally important to you. They call for different treatments, so proper diagnosis is important. Speech and movement may slow.

As I write about mental and cardiovascular effects, I vividly remember a night I was having dinner at the hospital. I was paged to see a patient who had just been admitted to the hospital. His heart was beating 30 times a minute; normal is 60. And he spoke ... very ... slowly. He even laughed very slowly: not “Ha, ha, ha,” but “Ha ... Ha ... Ha.” He had severe hypothyroidism.

Fortunately, hypothyroidism is easily diagnosed and treatment is straightforward. It usually consists of taking synthetic thyroid hormone to bring hormone levels back to normal.

Dr. Wallace: I’d like to respond to Ben, who said that all teachers must have to pass “Meanness 101” in college before they can get their teaching certificates.

I have spent a majority of my school life in special education classes and have had my share of unsympathetic and, in some cases, mean teachers. I am not disabled – just slow both mentally and physically. One physical education teacher turned his back when I was being harassed and pounded by other students. My grades were terrible and I hated school.

Finally, a counselor got me transferred to another school across town. At my new school, my teachers understood I had special needs and did everything they could to help me.

I am now out of special education classes and in regular classes and doing well. This total transformation was able to take place because the teachers here flunked “Meanness 101.” The teachers at my old school all passed the course with honors! – Kenny, Garden Grove, California Dear Kenny: I’m thrilled that you wound up in a school that met your needs – congratulations for taking advantage of a new opportunity. It’s unfortunate when a school has a few mean teachers, but it’s tragic when the entire faculty needs to re-evaluate its attitude.

Fortunately, mean teachers are rare, but I know schools do exist that would be much better off if some of the staff found other employment.

Our health teacher once told our class that tans are not healthy and the Egyptians centuries ago knew this and that’s why the ladies with the whitest skin were in fashion. What is this all about? – Nameless, Vero Beach, Florida Dear Nameless: Your teacher is correct. There is no such thing as a healthy tan. When the skin darkens from the sun’s powerful rays a certain degree of damage occurs. Eventually, sun worshipers will have premature wrinkling and sometimes skin cancer even if the worshipper never receives a sunburn.
