GENEVA – The supporters of a Geneva man accused of killing his wife have set up an online fundraiser for his legal fees over the objections of his wife’s family.

The Shad King Legal Fees page was created Tuesday on the crowd-funding website GoFundMe by Lisa Bridgewater, according to the fundraiser’s Shadwick m a i n p a g e . R. King There were no donors during the first 24 hours of the campaign, which has a goal of $50,000.

Shad – which is short for Shadwick – King is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in his wife Kathleen’s July 6 death. He

remained in the Kane County Jail on Wednesday afternoon on a $1.5 million bond, according to online records.

The fundraiser page describes King as a good-natured and cheerful person.

His supporters want to raise money to make sure King receives “an adequate legal defense,” according to the page. Bridgewater on Wednesday did not immediately respond to two emails seeking comment.

“We are raising money for his legal defense so that he can get back to raising his sons,” according to a description of the fundraiser on the page. “Shad King has been wrongfully charged with a crime he did not commit. Those of you that know Shad understand that he is always positive and fun to be around.”

for the story, objected to the fundraiser for King. The family has been exchanging emails with GoFundMe representatives about the page, which was still active Wednesday evening.

“Unfortunately, we are not able to give out information about the pages that are created,” wrote a GoFundMe spokesman identified only as Greg in an email. “I can tell you that people are able to raise money for legal fees.”

A previous King fundraiser page set up under another website, giveforward. com, was removed “because of the concerns that have surfaced,” and the fact that the group does not support fundraisers for legal fees in general, wrote a GiveForward Fundraising Coach identified only as Adrienne in an email. Associate Judge Clint Hull determined during King’s July 11 bond hearing that he qualified to have a public defender appointed.

King said during the hearing that he took a leave of absence from his job, had $400 in a debit card account and had no other income at the time.

Kane County Public Defender Kelli Childress said she assigned King’s case to herself.

As of Wednesday, the Kane County Public Defender’s Office still represents King, she said.

King’s next court date is Aug. 22.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Dick Leckbee’s uncle Clarence Sellers served in the army in World War I. Leckbee said his uncle was hit with mustard gas and suffered a shoulder injury during the fighting in France.

Leckbee, former commander of the St. Charles VFW, said he used to visit his mother’s brother in Edina, Missouri, as a kid during summer vacations.

“It caused him nerve damage, and he had total disability the rest of his life,” Leckbee said of the mustard gas. “He had other physical and mental aftereffects from it.”

World War I began in the summer of 1914, 100 years ago.

The U.S. declared war on Germany April 6, 1917, and veterans of that war are noted in a plaque on the Baker Community Center in St. Charles, in a photo at the Batavia Public Library and in photos and records at the Geneva History Museum and the St. Charles Heritage Center.

Leckbee said his uncle seldom talked about his service.

“He was in the thick of it in France. He used to tell me about running through hills and trying not to get his head blown off in France most of the time,” Leckbee said. “I remember him saying how peaceful it is around here. ‘Dickie, see the trees and hear the nice birds singing. We had none of that over there, trying to dodge bullets and trying to stay alive.’

“I understand from my family and my mother how messed up he got overseas,” Leckbee said. “He suffered, but he never made an issue of it. He thanked God to be able to come home.”

While Leckbee’s uncle survived a mustard gas attack, Harold Axel Colson did not, and died Nov. 10, 1918, according to a War Department honor roll of the dead, a document in the St. Charles Heritage Center collection.

A torn and yellowed undated telegram from the War Department tells of the heroics of one St. Charles soldier and death of another St. Charles soldier, both unnamed: “In a platoon on the edge of Bois du Fay in France, heard in the

twilight, a whir of airplanes, and looking up, saw an American plane with three German planes in pursuit.

“The American plane climbed above the enemy plane and made a straight dive downward and the purr of the

machine gun could be heard above the buzz of the motor.

The fight was desperate.

“The American plane was seen to careen then come to Earth in a wooded spot. Breaking all army rules, the St. Charles lad rushed to take the flier from the flaming plane and saw the pilot was a cousin.

He died two hours later in the hospital saying, ‘They never got me.’ ” ••• Yet, while England and

France already have begun to mark the 100th anniversary with various events and remembrances, many in the United States do not seem to have similar interest. According to a local history professor, that would not be unusual as most of the war was fought in Europe, and the U.S. entered late.

Elgin Community College history professor Tim Malone said by the time the United States was involved in World War I, the tide already had turned, he said.

And for Americans, World War II has more significance.

But geography and politics aside, Malone said the impact of World War I should not be underestimated.

In the hundred years between the Napoleonic wars and World War I, technology changed dramatically and leaders did not understand the type of war they were starting, Malone said, using machine guns, airplanes and

trench warfare.

“It was a kind of a monster that arose. And no one saw it coming, and it consumed them,” Malone said. “They bumbled into it, and it had a life of its own. They were not looking for what they got.”

As for the U.S. involvement, Malone said he agreed with author Walter Karp,

One way of gauging this war’s effect on the world is to see what it changed, he said.

“World War I was the beginning of the end of the English empire and the French empire. France was never the same. England was never the same,” Malone said.

“It destroyed the Austrian empire, the Czars of Russia – the Romanovs – the kings of Hohenzollern who ruled Prussia and became the emperors of Germany. The sultanate of the Ottoman empire that ruled Constantinople for 500 years was destroyed,” Malone said.

Powers said her students read poems from Germany, France and England in the lead-up to war. Among those that her students read are “Peace” by Rupert Brooke and “Blessed Are” by Charles Peguy.

“They are nationalistic and very exciting. There is a romanticism of war, an anticipation and excitement,” Powers said. “We contrast those poems with other writings at the end of the war and see a huge shift in attitude. The discourse becomes very pessimistic.”

Batavia graduate leads malaria campaign Nulph helped raise more than $43K with Wartburg Malaria Initiative

Nulph, a 2010 graduate of Batavia High School, started and led the Wartburg College Malaria Initiative, a year-long effort held in cooperation with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s Malaria

Campaign.

Wartburg College is a college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Students attending some of ELCA’s colleges, universities and campus ministries have surpassed a matching challenge of raising $125,000 for the ELCA Malaria Campaign by more than $6,000 and counting.

Wartburg College alone raised more than $43,000, which was the highest in the

country.

“I’m very, very proud of the Wartburg community,” said Nulph, who graduated from Wartburg in May. “The initiative was both campuswide and communitywide. It was really a community effort. I’m very proud of all that we accomplished.”

The goal of Kelsey Nulph the Wartburg Malaria Initiative was to raise $35,000.

“We had high aspirations

from the beginning,” Nulph said. “Wartburg is a school that’s rooted in service and leadership. This was the first student-led initiative that had ever occurred on Wartburg’s campus. It was a pretty big endeavor.”

More than 200 million people worldwide become infected with malaria every year, and more than 600,000 people die, according to the ELCA Malaria Campaign.

The funds that were raised will be used in part to teach people how to protect themselves from the spread of malaria and distribute insec-

ticide-treated mosquito nets.

Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite.

Nulph continues to want to help others. She has accepted a position with the group Save the Children, which promotes itself as the world’s top independent charity for children in need. She accepted the position shortly before graduating from college and moved to Washington, D.C. “I believe that we can all make a difference in the world,” Nulph said. “We just have to find our niche and use our gifts to the best of our ability in trying to do that.”

Attorney general finds Geneva library must release some Cetron documents 11

“Records of the obligation, receipt and use of public funds of the state, units of local government and school districts are public records available for inspection by the public according to law,” Silverman wrote, citing the 1970 Illinois Constitution.

Silverman cited similar language in the Freedom of Infor-

mation Act, and a public access opinion from May 9, that the “public has a right to know the purposes for which public funds are expended.”

Silverman upheld the library’s denial of the environmental studies under an exemption that is allowed for preliminary drafts, notes and records in which opinions are expressed.

The exemption is intended to protect public bodies’ com-

munication process “and encourage frank and open discussion … before a final decision is made,” according to Silverman’s findings.

Silverman did not support an additional exemption of trade secrets cited by the district’s attorney, Roger Ritzman, asserting that release of the documents would inflict competitive harm to Aires Consulting Group Inc., or make it more difficult for the library district to get similar information in the future.

“Neither the district’s response to this office nor its response to the FOIA request provide any explanation for the application of [this exemption],” according to Silverman’s findings.

“These contracts are not marked as proprietary, privileged or confidential, and the district has not provided any facts from which this office could conclude that disclosure of the contracts would cause competitive harm to Aires or

to the district,” according to Silverman’s findings.

Board president Esther Steel said Ritzman was out of town, and the board would wait for him to return to advise them what to do.

Esther Seitz, an attorney with Craven Law, which represents Illinois media, praised the decision, saying the attorney general “properly concluded that residents have a right to know about environmental concerns a publicly paid consultant identified.”

GENEVA – The Illinois attorney general determined this week in an non-binding decision that the Geneva Public Library must release some records regarding its environmental review of the Cetron property.

The Kane County Chronicle filed a Freedom of Information Act request in the fall that sought, among other documents, results of the library’s environmental review of the Cetron property while it was considering buying it as a new library site.

Library officials decided not to buy the property, citing environmental concerns, but they refused to release the environmental report, prompting the newspaper to file an appeal.

Batavia group comes out against proposed industrial park

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A group called Keep Batavia Neighborhoods is opposed to the proposed rezoning of land at Kirk Road and Wind Energy Pass on the city’s east side for an industrial park.

“This is spot zoning,” said Batavia resident Dan Pepin, a member of the group who lives near the proposed development. “They are trying to change the current zoning and put a light industrial complex right next to residential development. It is not compatible zoning, and it will change the flavor of the entrance to the east side of Batavia. It’s not going to feel so much like a neighborhood, as an industrial area.”

Plan commissioners in April voted, 4-3, to recommend amending the city’s comprehensive plan and zoning map to allow for an industrial park on land along Kirk Road originally proposed for town houses. Aldermen now will discuss the plans. The 56-acre property, known as Prairie Commons, is on the east side of Kirk Road

at Wind Energy Pass. City officials in 2005 annexed the property.

The development originally proposed for the property included residential zoning on the eastern 36 acres, with 242 town houses proposed. The western 20 acres was to be zoned general commercial.

Skokie-based The Missner Group now proposes to build two large industrial buildings on the entire 56-acre property.

Members of the group plan to speak to aldermen at Tuesday’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting at 7:30 p.m. at the Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave. The group started a website, www. keepbatavianeighborhoods. com, and has posted signs along Kirk Road in opposition to the proposal.

“We want them to address our concerns at a future meeting,” said resident Joyce Keane, another member of Keep Batavia Neighborhoods who also lives near the proposed development.

Those concerns include increased truck traffic generated by the industrial park and that

the project would decrease the value of homes on the city’s east side by 10 percent to 25 percent.

Dennis Merritt, who also lives near the proposed development, has made an offer to purchase the Prairie Commons property. Merritt, who has been in the real estate business for 30 years, said the economy has rebounded sufficiently to “wade back into residential development.”

His proposal calls for 242 town houses to be built on the land, which is what originally was proposed.

“If we change anything that was approved in 2007, we have to ask for an amendment to the annexation agreement,” Dennis said. “The plan right now is to develop it as it was approved.”

Meanwhile, the industrial park proposal continues to move forward. Batavia Planning and Zoning Officer Joel Strassman said Missner has submitted a proposed development plan, and he said he expects specific plans to be submitted in the coming months.

“I believe Missner continues to be interested in building on this property,” Strassman said Wednesday.

its full potential, according to Fermilab’s website and Kephart.

Kephart said there are approximately 30,000 particle accelerators in use around the world, and the industry in growing at 10 percent a year.

This is, in part, because of the practical application that people do not often realize accelerators have, Kephart said. The technology at Fermilab and at laboratories across the country often play key roles in everything from car parts to cutting-edge cancer treatments.

Both houses of Congress must pass identical bills before the legislation moves to the president’s desk.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation July 22 that was introduced last week by U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, and other representatives.

According to a news release from Hultgren’s office, the Department of Energy Laboratory Modernization and Technology Transfer Act of 2014 would bring the United States’ national lab system into the 21st century and promote the easy transfer of federal research into the private sector to bring to the marketplace.

The bill would codify the Agreements for Commercializing Technology, a pilot program aimed at facilitating cooperation between companies and national laboratories to develop new technology.

There is a significant amount of bureaucracy and legal barriers that get in the way of technology transfer agreements, and this bill tries to streamline the process, according to Hultgren’s office. Private companies that want to utilize a laboratory’s resources cannot deviate from a laboratory’s core mission, according to the office.

“This bill will ensure that discoveries made in our national labs do not get stuck there. Instead, public-private partnerships can speed scientific research and innovation into the marketplace and help drive our economy forward and create jobs,” Hultgren said in a prepared statement. “As our national labs have been a primary driver of American innovation, we must stay ahead of technological change and new discoveries by pursuing

skummerer@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Amidst daily riders and horse shows, Bull Run Equestrian Center in Elburn offers an unique opportunity – one that allows children with an array of diagnoses to find a bright spot in their week.

Hippotherapy is a type of physical and occupational therapy that uses the three-dimensional movement of a horse as a treatment tool.

In 2012, physical therapist Loren Gineris began a practice at Bull Run Equestrian Center called Strides In Motion.

Strides In Motion includes hippotherapy, along with clinic-based treatments.

More than developmental and physical progress can come from weekly therapy sessions at the equestrian center, Gineris said.

“The horse provides not only the three-dimensional movement that helps so much with strength, range of motion and developmental progress, but the horse also ... there is such a connection between the client and the horse,” Gineris

Gineris can be found at the stable serving a variety of children and adults whose diagnoses span across the spectrum.

While each client differs in his or her capabilities, they are all united in their love for their horse. This love and connection that is fostered between a cli-

ent and the horse is what make hippotherapy so effective and enjoyable. The connection also is one that Gineris uses to push her clients to go that extra inch.

The horse is an extremely motivating tool, and kids will do anything for their horse, said Gineris, adding that she will go outside with a client and

work on reaching down and picking up grass and picking flowers – things that if she was in a clinic and had blocks, the kids would do it three or four times and would throw them or get bored, she said.

Strides In Motion is not typical horseback riding. Gineris has clients doing activities while on the horse, such as tossing a ball, placing rings around a pole and squatting. Physical therapy also is included in activities, like bathing the horses, obstacle courses and drawing.

“So often these clients come to us as pediatrics ... they’ve only been in very sterile environments – they’ve been in hospitals. They love coming to this facility; it’s gorgeous.

The wind’s blowing in their face; they hear horses; there’s flowers; there’s grass; and then there’s the horse.”

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Park District will host its annual Big Truck Show from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 9, at James O. Breen Community Park at the intersection of Campton Hills and Peck roads in St. Charles.

The Big Truck Show provides a rare chance to view the inner workings of trucks, cars, and tractors that are usually only viewed from a distance, and visitors are encouraged to bring their cameras.

Garbage trucks, front-end loaders, tractors, police squad cars and fire trucks will be among the many vehicles on display.

Representatives will be on hand to offer “tours” and answer questions about each piece of equipment.

EYE INJURY PREVENTION Nearly 2.5 million people suffer eye injuries in the United States annually, and nearly one million people have lost some degree of vision as a result.

In most cases, these injuries could have been prevented with the use of protective eyewear at home. The fact is that nearly half of all eye injuries occur in the home. The arrest was on a charge of drunken driving, whereas the citations were for violations not specified in the release.

Two outstanding warrant arrests also were made during the campaign, which coincided with Independence Day. Law enforcement agen-

cies throughout Illinois participated in the effort to get drunken drivers off of the roads and to encourage seat belt use, especially during late-night hours.

Extra emphasis was given to those hours because statistics show that’s when the highest number of motorists drink and drive and the fewest buckle up.

The traffic campaign was funded by federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Traffic Safety.

It is part of the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns.

THE WASHINGTON POST First blame Congress. Generally a useful rule these days, it certainly holds when considering Tuesday’s worrying – though possibly temporary – setback for the Affordable Care Act in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Blame Democrats who pressed through a bill containing contradictory language. Blame Republicans who, in their drive for full repeal, have declined to fix the ambiguities and unintended consequences that turn up in any sizeable piece of legislation.

Blame the District of Columbia Circuit, too, for an unwise and unnecessary ruling that would dismantle much of the Affordable Care Act system that has been slowly taking hold.

The dispute concerns who is eligible for federal subsidies to buy private health care insurance.

People in states that set up their own marketplaces buy insurance there. In states that chose not to establish marketplaces people purchase coverage on marketplaces the federal government created.

The Obama administration claims that, whether you are buying on a state or federal exchange, you should be eligible for federal tax credits if your income is below defined limits. Opponents of the law contend that its text bars the people buying on federal exchanges from getting the tax credits.

Typically, federal agencies get wide leeway in interpreting laws, except when the law is so unambiguous that the administration’s interpretation can’t be sustained. The D.C. Circuit concluded that a reference to exchanges “established by the state[s]” is so clear that it had no choice but to bar subsidies in the 36 federal-marketplace states. But shortly after the D.C. Circuit ruled, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit disagreed strongly in a near-identical case, noting several other provisions in the law that point to a much more sensible interpretation: that federal tax credits should be widely available.

Given the contradictions, the administration’s interpretation deserves deference. That is particularly true because the administration’s reading accords with the law’s obvious intent: to offer affordable health-care coverage to a large number of Americans.

The full D.C. Circuit should reconsider and reverse its panel’s 2-to-1 ruling. Then the Supreme Court should let the administration’s interpretation stand, instead of taking the case and prolonging the ACA’s legal limbo.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Science of college shopping Now that we’re well into July, the college sales are starting to heat up. Not to brag or anything, but I’m pretty much an expert in this category. I’ve been ready since June, but the stores have only just caught up to my preparedness.

When it comes to college shopping, there are a few staple stores where one should stick to.

Bed Bath and Beyond has a wide selection of a lot of basic stuff.

IKEA is the place to get cool and cheap stuff that you’ll want to use even after graduation. Of course, Target is the go-to place for anything (and everything) cute. They have all the things that you didn’t know you needed, but probably cannot possibly live without.

While everyone knows all the basics they need, we Ackermans have whittled the shopping process down to a science, including some speciality items that I’m planning to take with me. Milk crates are cute, cheap, stackable (to compensate for the inevitable lack of storage), and perfect for carrying everything in and out of the dorms. Plus, they can be used as garbage/re-

LIFE AT EAST Brigid Ackerman cycling cans or laundry baskets on the fly. They’re perfect and one of the most useful things on my list. Another item I’m taking – thanks to my oldest sister – is painter’s tape. I’ll be able to tape posters to walls/ doors and hold together broken things – and take it off whenever I want – without even a mark left as evidence.

I’m also taking some things that I already have with me, like some books and pillows, and most of my school supplies. It’s amazing what kind of useful stuff I can find when I look through the depths of my room. I keep reminding myself that I will also have many of my fabulous pairs of shoes along for the ride.

It’s tempting to buy everything in sight, but I know when I get to campus in the fall, I’ll realize just how small my dorm really is. In the past, my sisters took everything they had set

aside, and my parents usually brought back a few things. Over visits back home, I know I’ll be able to bring back things that didn’t work and take more of what was useful. I certainly won’t be stranded on campus with that clothes steamer that I’ve never used.

I know that in the end, my college experience won’t be made up of material things, but rather the things that aren’t neatly shelved in any Target. I do think it’s nice to know that that very first day, which will be both scary and exciting, I can at least be friends with my backpack and closet organizer.

Over my years in college, I’ll enjoy countless new experiences and all the new stuff that comes along with them. Who knows, maybe some of them won’t involve milk crates.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Those who attend Lupita’s Cocina’s Tequila Taste on Wednesday, July 30, will get a taste of what the Campton Hills restaurant has to offer.

“We do serve a lot of fresh fruit margaritas, and we do have a nice variety of well-known tequilas,” said restaurant owner and St. Charles resident Jose Quintero.

“Lately, we’ve been working a lot with the Milagro tequila.”

This is the inaugural year for the Tequila Taste. Lupita’s Cocina, located at 40W222 LaFox Road in Campton Hills, near St. Charles, is still a relatively new restaurant, having only opened its doors last year. Quintero said he thought the event would be a good way to showcase what the restaurant does.

“This will be a good opportunity to show people exactly what we do,” he said.

“We do a nice presentation on our plates.”

The Tequila Taste will start at 6 p.m.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and reservations can be made by calling Lupita’s Cocina at 630-377-0706.

He has been planning Tequila Taste for the last two months. If the weather cooperates, the event will be held on the restaurant’s spacious outdoor patio.

“We decided this was the right time, being summertime,” Quintero said.

For $45 a person, people will receive a four-course meal, which includes ceviche, a seafood dish popular in South America, fruit salad, pollo a la crema and churros con helado.

The event also will feature several different tequilas and margaritas, including Milagro silver tequila and margarita de melon. The menu was developed by the restaurant’s chef, Roberto Barojas.

During Tequila Taste, the restaurant will educate customers about tequilas, Quintero said. Tequila was first mass produced in the early 19th century in Guada-

lajara, Mexico.

A few people have already reserved spots for Tequila Taste, Quintero said. The event is limited to 50 people, but Quintero said he will strive to accommodate as many people as possible.

“We might have to do a second seating or have a second one the following week,” he said.

Tequila Taste will likely expose more people to the restaurant. Quintero said the restaurant continues to gain new customers since it opened in January 2013.

“We have seen business grow by 25 percent from last year,” he said. “Obviously people know that we are here, and they tell other people about us. That’s how we get our business, through recommendations.”

Freshness is at the center of everything the restaurant does.

“We buy vegetables from some of the local gardeners and local farmers,” Quintero said.

Lupita’s Cocina is known for its flavorful fajitas.

“We create our own fajitas sauce made out of fresh ingredients,” Quintero said.

“It’s pretty good.”

The restaurant strives to set itself apart from other restaurants serving Mexican food, he said.

“We want people to know that we are a little bit different,” Quintero said.

The restaurant is planning more special events, including a wine tasting. And Quintero said he hopes to make Tequila Taste an annual event.

Visual and film artists are invited to submit their work for jurying. Selected artists will be featured in pop-up galleries, beginning Friday, Sept. 5, and running through Sunday, Sept. 28. An artist’s reception will take place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12.

The pop-up galleries will feature multiple visual art/ film displays at venues in St. Charles. Gallery No. 1 is unthemed and open to visual artists in any media, including film; Gallery No. 2’s theme is “What’s Black and White and Re[a]d All Over?” Entries can be in any style or medium, but should have a connection to the theme.

The jury fee is $20, regardless of the number of pieces submitted, and regardless of whether the work is submitted for one or both of the galleries. Fees can be paid through PayPal on the St. Charles Arts Council website – stcharlesartscouncil.org – by

Yonkovich survives playoffs

Day 2 at the IJGA Chick Evans Invitational at Itasca Country Club began Wednesday, kicking off match play for the surviving 32 boys and 16 girls.

Match play changes the strategy of the players and also allows for a quick comeback after a rough hole. A snowman 8 on a hole could sink a player’s chances in stroke play, but in match play, it’s just one of 18 potential holes.

The change was noticeable in the boys’ side of the bracket and the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds – determined by stroke play on Tuesday – each went down in the first round of match play.

& 5. The recent Kaneland graduate said his game was shaky at times in the first round of match play, but it was still good enough to advance to the round of 16.

“Every part of my game was a little shaky at the start,” Yonkovich said. “I didn’t have much time to warm up, but it worked out.”

The drama hit nail-biting levels when Yonkovich and his second-round opponent, Joseph Addante, went shot-forshot in extra holes to decide a winner. Yonkovich was mere inches short on a putt on the 18th green that would have clinched it and again was just short on a chip from off the green on the second playoff hole.

Finally, Addante missed the green with his tee shot on the par-3 sixth hole, the duo’s 42nd hole of the day, and Yonkovich capitalized with a tap-in par to advance to the elite eight in today’s bracket.

“It was a long and hard battle,” Yonkovich said afterward.

“I’m exhausted right now. I’ve played that many holes before, but the intensity of it just made it that much better.”

In his first official match play tournament, Yonkovich said he enjoyed the differences that match play provided rather than the usual stroke play.

“If you have a bad hole, you can just totally forget about it,” Yonkovich said. “It’s totally different. What [your opponent] takes on a certain hole could totally affect what you take. It’s a lot better, I think.”

On the girl’s side, Lauren Beaudreau eliminated Burlington Central grad Jenna Kurosky by being 6 up through 14 holes. The No. 2-seeded Beaudreau faced St. Charles North’s Kate Lillie in the second round and eliminated the North Star sophomore 2 & 1.

Lillie was down two after 14 holes but came back to pull within one by winning No. 15.

However, Beaudreau nailed “a great putt,” according to Lillie on the 17th hole to end the match.

Lillie thought she played well, especially chipping, and enjoyed the added mental aspect of match play that stroke play doesn’t provide.

“I think match play is really fun,” Lillie said. “If you’re down a hole, it’s a lot more mental and learning how to deal with that, which I find is a lot more interesting.”

Lillie pulled a minor upset in the first round, beating Hanna Netisingha 3 & 2.

Lillie was the No. 10 seed after Tuesday’s stroke play and was able to beat the No. 7 seed to advance to the final eight before bowing out to Beaudreau.

With Lillie eliminated, Yonkovich is the only area golfer still in contention and will be back on the course this morning for a quarterfinal match against No. 17 seed Jackson Wetherbee.

Pat Schiller tabled some of the accelerated football jargon on reserve in his brain upon joining his alma mater as an assistant coach last season.

Boy, is the former Geneva standout ready to channel it now.

Schiller, a 6-foot-2, 235-pound linebacker, signed with St. Louis Rams this week, just in time for their first full-squad workout of training camp Friday.

On Tuesday, Schiller shared a photo of a Rams helmet on his Instagram account. The caption read: “Thankful for another opportunity!”

The Atlan- Pat Schiller ta Falcons cut Schiller, also a former Northern Illinois star, at the end of training camp in 2013. He suffered the same fate in 2012, lasting until the final cut of training camp.

He spent only a few hours in Geneva before the Falcons asked him to join their practice squad last season.

In the early weeks of the 2013 campaign, Schiller also tried out with the Houston Texans and Carolina Pan-

thers. He told Geneva coaches his assistant position was on a week-by-week basis as he hoped to catch on with an NFL team midseason.

Tuning into to pro games on any given Sunday – namely those involving the Falcons – could be a chore.

“It’s so hard to watch the Falcons play, I’m not going to lie to you,” Schiller told the Chronicle in October. “It took me a while before I could even do it. All those guys, you’ve got a year and a half invested into a team. When you’re part of a team, you’re part of a brotherhood.”

Schiller remained a fixture at Batavia-based ProForce Sports Performance training to stay in shape for the chance he always stayed optimistic about. In St. Louis, he will join high-profile rookie linebacker Michael Sam, the NFL’s first openly gay player, in training camp.

In any event, Schiller will look to maintain a steady approach in his bid to make his first NFL regular season roster.

“You’ve got to keep a positive mindset, because training camp is all about evaluation,” he said in August 2013, “and it’s hard figuring out where you stand in the mix of things.”

By STEVE NITZ snitz@shawmedia.com DETROIT – P.J. Fleck’s first season as a collegiate head coach wasn’t anything to write home about, as his Western Michigan Broncos struggled to a 1-11 record in an injury-riddled year.

At the same time, Fleck wasn’t expecting to come in like gangbusters and compete for conference titles right away. He feels it was all about building that foundation for future success, just like Joe Novak did when Fleck was a wide receiver at Northern Illinois.

“Don’t sacrifice what you really want, for what you want right now. A lot of people look at immediate gratification, that’s what this profession’s based on, immediate gratification – win now, win now,” Fleck said during Wednesday’s MAC Media Day at Ford

Field. “Sometimes when you focus on just winning, and winning now, the program never gets built. It gets built on little weak stilts, it’s like building a beach home with no foundation.”

In terms of the foundation, it’s something Fleck seems extremely proud of. While the 2013 season may have been a horror story of sorts, it didn’t carry over into recruiting.

Fleck’s Broncos brought home the top-ranked recruiting class in the MAC, according to Rivals, and the 46th-best in the nation. Fleck said as many as 14 true freshmen could see the field this year, and maybe even start.

“We needed to get recruits in there. We had all 25 committed before the season started, that was huge. But we recruited the right people, because it showed, because we went through a season of 1-11 and they all stuck,” Fleck said.

“Which is shocking. They had to walk down the hallways with a Western Michigan shirt on every week of a week just getting waxed. And they had to sit there and say yep, I’m [going to WMU] instead of Florida or Nebraska or Florida State or Michigan State, or Minnesota or whatever.

“That’s the type of kid though, that can handle adversity. Those are the kids we wanted to build the program around, and that’s what we brought in.”

Fleck made a lot of noise when he arrived in Kalamazoo, bringing in his “Row the Boat” mantra which is featured on WMU’s uniforms, and elsewhere in town.

“There’s oars everywhere,” WMU wideout Corey Davis said. “Restaurants and in the community. It’s a lot of fun. A lot of people have a lot of fun to it and they get it. It means a lot to everyone on the team,

as well as around the community.”

Fleck, a Sugar Grove product and Kaneland graduate, has a charismatic attitude which may have rubbed some people the wrong way. When asked about it Wednesday, Fleck said he felt he needed to turn things up.

“I am who I am. I’m extremely, believe it or not, people don’t know this, I’m very humble to be where I am. But that means every day, that’s where the energy comes from,” he said. “I never want to lose the opportunity to do what I’m doing, and the fear of failure is always in my mind, and that’s what motivates me

on a daily basis.”

Fleck also felt his charisma carried over into recruiting, helping the Broncos land the highly-touted class that they did.

“If I would have been like ‘woe is us, we stink, this is not good’, then we would have got nobody,” Fleck said. “Nobody would have wanted to come play for a guy like that. But I think that when you sit and look at what adversity we’ve been through, that’s the true measure of champions. And I think that’s what’s going to be, as we kind of go forward, you’re going to start to see that characteristic of our football team.”

While Triple-A infielder Javy Baez remains one of the most heralded Cubs prospects, the Cougars added a Baez of their own Wednesday.

Outfielder Jake Jeffrey Baez Hannemann joined the Cougars from Short-A Boise as the Cougars promoted center fielder Jake Hannemann to Advanced-A Daytona.

Baez batted .267 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs and stole 15 bases in 38 games this year with Boise.

Hannemann, a highly regarded defensive center fielder, batted .254 with six home runs, 39 RBIs and stole a team-high 32 bases for the Cougars. A Brigham Young product, Hannemann was the Cubs’ third-round draft pick in 2013.

Buckle down Wednesday’s game marked the beginning of a grueling 40 game in 41 days stretch to cap the regular season.

It also was the first game of a six-game homestand, with West Michigan coming to town after South Bend completes its three-game stay in Geneva.

After the Sox’s 2-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals, Flowers had to explain how Mike Moustakas led with his knee to jar the ball out of Flowers’ mitt in the ninth, allowing what turned out to be the winning run to score. Center fielder Adam Eaton had made a perfect one-hop throw after fielding Nori Aoki’s single.

“I thought I had it the whole time,” said Flowers,

who heard more than a few boos and hoots from the crowd of 23,811 on a delightfully cool and sunny July afternoon.

Only hours before, Flowers happily stood at the same spot by his locker talking about his dash from U.S. Cellular Field to Northwestern Hospital after Monday’s game and how he seemed to hit every green light along the way, allowing him to arrive in time to be with his wife for the birth of the couple’s second child. The big moment came only 38 minutes after the final out.

A disputed call benefited the Cougars in a big way in the bottom of the third. After Jacob Rogers reached on an error by South Bend second baseman Jamie Westbrook, a snap throw to third base appeared to catch the Cougars’ Carlos Penalver in a baserunning gaffe, but Penalver was called safe, prompting an argument from South Bend manager Mark Haley.

Haley might have argued harder if he’d known what would come next. The play at third base would have been the final out of the inning, but instead, it left the bags loaded for third baseman Jeimer Candelario, who sliced a single to left field to score a pair of runs, giving Kane County a 3-1 lead.

Cougars DH Cael Brockmeyer added a pair of doubles and two RBIs as the Cougars snapped a three-game losing streak.

The Cougars (65-36 overall, 20-11 second half) outhit the Silver Hawks, 11-4, and were errorless defensively while South Bend committed a trio of errors.

GENEVA – Michael Perez was a one-man wrecking crew for South Bend, homering off Cougars starting pitcher Duane Underwood in the second and fifth innings.

He didn’t have much help, though.

Aside from Perez, the Silver Hawks managed only one hit off Underwood in Underwood’s five innings, Duane during which Underwood he struck out seven batters.

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com BOURBONNAIS – One year ago in the same room we sat in on Wednesday at Olivet Nazarene University, Phil Emery put his trust in Josh McCown to be the Bears’ backup quarterback.

At the opening press conference for the 2014 training camp, Phil Emery and Marc Trestman talked at length about the two veterans vying to be this year’s McCown, Jordan Palmer and Jimmy Clausen.

Despite the heavy praise Emery had for Clausen, whose workout with the Bears was “as good a quarter-

back workout that we’ve seen since I’ve been here,” Palmer still has the first shot to be Jay Cutler’s backup.

“There’s three guys there up for the No. 2, but it’s going to start with Jordan and we feel really good about Jimmy and we Jordan Palmer felt really good about David [Fales]’ performance as well,” Trestman said. “We’re going to give Jordan the first shot, he’s been here the longest. Jimmy Clausen has the most experience so we’re going to work him in there. We’re going to continue to provide David with

opportunity throughout camp to play and perform not only in practice, but in the games.”

Emery was impressed with the progress he saw from Clausen following shoulder surgery last September.

“I think he grew from a leadership perspective. I think his focus grew. He always showed me he could be creative and make some plays on his own,” Emery said. “I don’t think mobility is his biggest asset but I definitely saw a player that knows how to get out of the way and get the ball off in time, and a mentally tough player that will take a hit to deliver the ball with accuracy and precision.

“I really like how he came in here. He’s got a little chip

on his shoulder right now. He wants to re-prove himself or prove himself and he’s very focused.”

Emery said that Clausen reached out to Cutler and the two of them spent a weekend working on the playbook, helping get Clausen through minicamp and sticking with the roster for Bourbonnais.

The issue for every team’s competition at backup quarterback – always a weird battle on a team like the Bears, when the winner of the No. 2 job ideally will only take a snap if Cutler gets hurt – is reps.

“It’s going to be interesting. There’s not going to be a lot of reps for them,” Cutler said. “I think a lot of it is

going to play out in the preseason games, because I’m going to get a lot of the reps in camp.

“Jordan, he’s been around a long time, his older brother, he’s been able to watch him a lot. Jimmy, he’s played in big games at Notre Dame and kinda got the pedigree. He’s a high-round pick, he was in a tough position in Carolina.

They’re both both very hungry, they’ve both worked extremely hard this offseason putting in the time mentally, which is probably more important for them right now, just trying to figure out the playbook so they can go to the line of scrimmage and be fluent in what they want to do.

We’ll see how it goes.”

The Bulls are in the Love sweepstakes in a big way, offering Gibson, Mirotic and McDermott to the Timberwolves, according to Chris Sheridan, who runs the SheridanHoops.com website. You’d think Minnesota would like that combination better than the Cavaliers’ offer of 2014 No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins, 2013 No. 1 overall pick Anthony Bennett and draft choices.

If Thibs wants to run a Rose-Love-Joakim Noah team into the ground on the way to an NBA championship, well, start running, fellas. The last I heard, the whole idea is to win. Not to pile on the Cubs, but what upsets so many people is their decision to not even make an attempt to win games at the big-league level while growing the farm system. Winning now: kind of important.

So here are the Bulls, going for it all, and people are worried about roster depth.

By PETER CHIANCA More Content Now Let’s face it, “Weird Al” Yankovic albums are impervious to typical reviews – you either appreciate his song and style parodies, or there’s something wrong with you. (“He who is tired of ‘Weird Al’ is tired of life,” to quote Homer Simpson.)

That said, it would be hard for anyone to deny that Al’s latest effort, “Mandatory Fun,” continues the late-career renaissance that began with 2006’s “Straight Outta Lynwood.” (A run only slightly outmatched by the actual Renaissance.)

He may not cover a lot of new ground, but as this track-by-track rundown shows, Yankovic is as Al as ever. I’ll try not to overuse the word “brilliant,” but it will be hard.

1.) “Handy” (parody of Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy”). Some of Al’s best songs have taken the form of commercials – I’ve always been partial to “King of Suede,” probably because of my family history with haberdashery – and his latest, featuring a handyman pleading for clients to “Let me glue dat, glue dat, and screw dat, screw dat,” preserves his pitchman tradition beautifully. Stars: 4 out of 5.

2.) “Lame Claim to Fame” (style parody of Southern Culture on the Skids). The concept, skewering people who insist on playing up tenuous connections to celebrities, gets old kind of fast. But it’s worth sticking out for the references to Kevin Bacon and YouTube video commenters. Stars: 3 out of 5.

3.) “Foil” (parody of Lorde’s “Royals”). Not only the best tribute to aluminum foil ever, but the best one possible. And I dare you not to laugh out loud when you realize where the mid-song shift in direction is going. Stars: 4 out of 5.

4.) “Sports Song” (parody of every college fight song ever). I’m usually not a big fan of the phrase “You s-ck!”, but if there was ever a perfect context for it, this song is it. Stars: 5 out of 5.

5.) “Word Crimes” (parody of Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines”). Al simply annihilates the original, a mess of misogynistic claptrap, by meticulously replacing it with a brilliant (there, I said it) plea for proper grammar and usage that will immediately become every editor and English teacher’s favorite. Somewhere, Strunk and White are smiling. Stars: 5 out of 5.

6.) “My Own Eyes” (style parody of the Foo Fighters). It always feels like Al’s coasting when he falls back on a series of random and gross scenarios, and this litany of horrible sights he wishes he could unsee – “I saw a naked vagrant giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to his cat;

7.) “NOW That’s What I Call Polka!” Al’s polka medleys never, ever get old. The only problem with them is that they’re too short – if he put out an album-length polka medley, frankly, I would listen. And as usual, this one (featuring the likes of “Gangnam Style,” “Wrecking Ball” and “Get Lucky”) improves on every single song he includes. Stars: 5 out of 5.

8.) “Mission Statement” (style parody of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young). Anyone’s who’s ever had to sit through a business meeting on “corporate synergy” and “promoting viability” will appreciate these four minutes of business-babble filtered through CSN&Y harmonies, especially when it goes all Judy Blue Eyes at the end. Stars: 4 out of 5.

9.) “Inactive” (parody of Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive”). This ode to couch potatoes has its moments – “I really hate this show (but) I can’t reach my remote control” – but Al’s trod this ground before,

and the original song is so boring even he can’t completely turn it around. Stars: 3 out of 5.

10.) “First World Problems” (style parody of the Pixies). Unlike the weird ramblings of “My Own Eyes,” this song laying out upper middle class tragedies (“I can’t remember which car I drove to the mall”) features things you have ACTUALLY SAID. You know who you are. Stars: 5 out of 5.

11.) “Tacky” (parody of Pharrell’s “Happy”).

If there’s one thing Al knows, it’s tacky – and the fact that, thanks to the Internet, we know there are actually people out there who do these things (“I would live Tweet a funeral, take selfies with the deceased”) proves that Al remains the right commentator for these odd times of ours. Stars: 4 out of 5.

12.) “Jackson Park Express” (style parody of Cat Stevens). A nine-minute unspoken conversation between two bus passengers, it covers every aspect of human relationships, from intoxicating deodorants to wanting to wear the other person’s skin over your skin (“but not in a creepy way”). Genius. Stars: 5 out of 5.

Optical and computer aids help those with poor vision Dear Doctor K: I have poor vision that is making it more and more difficult for me to live independently. Are there tools that can help with my day-to-day activities?

Dear Reader: Like you, some of my patients have poor vision, which limits their ability to perform activities such as reading a newspaper, using a computer, watching television, cooking a meal or crossing the street. For some, poor vision means poor central vision. For others, it is blurry vision, loss of peripheral vision or even double vision. But however your vision is affected, there are ways to cope: • Optical aids. The magnifying lens remains one of the most common tools to help compensate for poor vision. Most magnifying lenses are made to be held, but some can be incorporated into the lens of a pair of prescription glasses and used for reading or detail work.

Special lenses that work like miniature telescopes can be mounted on a pair of glasses and used for driving or watching a movie. And glasses with special filters may help with excessive glare or reduced contrast (less distinction between light and dark).

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff • Computer aids. Software programs can make the text on a computer monitor larger or more legible by allowing you to change font size and background displays. Specialized text-to-speech conversion programs read text aloud, while speech-recognition software converts speech to text.

In the late 1990s, a patient of mine developed a condition that caused his vision to worsen. He was a writer, and he felt that his career would end when his eyesight failed. “How can I read? How can I even read what I write?” he asked me. A self-styled “old-fashioned” guy, he wrote on a typewriter.

Switching to a computer made a huge difference. He started writing on one, using a large font size. He found someone to scan books and documents, and then used the computer to enlarge the text of the scanned documents.

As e-books became common a few

years later, it became even easier to read everything he needed to.

If his eyesight worsens further, text-to-speech conversion will help him read by listening. And voice-recognition technology will allow him to write by talking.

• Other aids. Electronic “talking” watches, alarm clocks and calculators let you rely on your hearing rather than your vision. Listening to audiobooks is another popular option.

A simple desk lamp with a metal shade is one of the easiest ways to improve vision if you use it properly.

Position the lamp so that the light shines directly onto the materials in front of you, rather than over your shoulder or high above you.

Other inexpensive, low-tech vision aids include large-print versions of playing cards and bingo cards, and push-button telephone and cellphone pads.

And, of course, many books and newspapers come in large-print versions.

Stop feeling sorry for yourself Dr. Wallace: I’m 16 and was attending a new high school this year because I got into a fight at my old school. The girl I fought with was expelled because she told a teacher that she was going to kill me.

My parents had me transferred to the new school because they were afraid for my safety at my previous school. I hated my new school this year. The kids are stuck-up and are not friendly. Being there this past year was like being in prison.

This summer some friends from my old school told me that the girl who threatened to kill me was shipped back to Mexico and won’t be coming back to my old school in the fall.

The timing is perfect to transfer back since we are on summer break.

The introduction of crack cocaine into the drug community was particularly alarming.

First, the cost of crack is dramatically less than other forms of cocaine.

Next, crack is usually mixed with tobacco or marijuana and smoked.

Smoking crack allows high doses of cocaine to reach the brain almost instantly, producing the most dramatic cocaine high. This rapid “high” is followed by a deep “low” that leaves the user craving more. As a result, crack can be rapidly addicting.

Besides addiction, crack can cause medical problems and even death. The powerful craving for crack cocaine makes it very difficult for the user to break the habit alone.

In this example, how should South plan the play in four hearts after West leads the club queen?

South, with two aces and 11 points, was right to open one heart, not two hearts. North’s jump to four hearts was aggressive. A game-invitational three hearts would have been normal.

But South would surely have passed and ruined the play ... er, column.

South starts with four losers: one spade, one diamond and two clubs. He has nine winners: six hearts, two diamonds and one club. His only realistic chance is to establish dummy’s spade suit. For that, he needs to find the spades splitting 4-3 and to have four dummy entries: three for spade ruffs in his hand and one to get back to the dummy (after drawing trumps) to cash the 13th spade.

South must act immediately, winning the first trick with his club ace and leading his spade.

Let’s assume East takes the trick, cashes his club king, and plays his last club. West wins and shifts to a diamond.

Declarer wins in the dummy, ruffs a spade, plays a low heart to dummy’s 10, ruffs a spade high, leads another trump to dummy’s king, ruffs a third spade, and cashes the heart ace. When everything passes off perfectly, South leads a diamond to dummy and cashes the remaining spade, discarding his last diamond. Excellent!
