First phase of Charlestowne Mall project slated for August

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The first phase of construction for the Charlestowne Mall redevelopment is scheduled for August, its project developer said Monday.

“We’re excited to get started here,” said Chuck May, project developer of The Quad St. Charles. “We’re excited to get some bulldozers out there and get moving.”

After months of preparation, contractors plan to begin work in a few weeks on utilities and parking lot construction at the mall site, at 3800 E. Main St. on the city’s east side.

May on Monday gave the St. Charles Government Operations Committee an update on the project at its regular meeting.

The regrading of the mall property and utilities reinstallation likely will be complete in November, May said. Then work will begin on the actual mall building during the first few months of 2015.

May was representing The Krausz Companies Inc., which purchased the mall site in November 2013 for more than $9.5 million. The company plans to rename the mall The Quad St. Charles, transform its appearance and add new tenants to its floors.

The mall project also calls for adding outlots on the perimeter of the mall property for restaurants and retail stores. The committee on Monday unanimously approved minor changes to the preliminary site and engineering plan that involved the outlots.

The ring road that surrounds that mall will shift

further north for additional parking for the outlots along Main Street, according to an executive summary of the proposed plan changes. The depth of a future outlot southeast of the Carson Pirie Scott building also will be reduced.

The city’s Plan Commission in August is expected to review proposed mall building architectural elevations and landscaping at the site, according to the executive summary.

Saks Fifth Avenue to anchor mall expansion New stores to open next spring at Chicago Premium Outlets

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com AURORA –Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th will anchor a 50-store expansion of Chicago Premium Outlets mall in Aurora.

Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner and executives of Simon Property Group, which owns the mall, recently broke ground on a $110 million, 290,000-square-foot expansion of the mall. When finished next spring, the mall will have 170 stores, said Danielle De Vita, senior vice president of development and acquisitions for Premium Outlets, the outlet division of Simon Property

Group.

Batavia School Board members in April unanimously voted to rebate $3.2 million of future property taxes to the Chicago Premium Outlets mall in Aurora to help pay for the mall’s expansion. The expansion will be built on 45 acres on a vacant industrial site just east of the current Chicago Premium Outlets at Farnsworth Avenue and Bilter Road.

Once the partial rebate reaches a total of $3.2 million or goes on for 10 years, whichever occurs first, the Batavia School District is expected to receive an additional $923,000 a year in property taxes based on current levels, Kris Monn,

the Batavia School District 101 assistant superintendent for finance, had told school board members.

In addition to the expansion, several new stores will be added to the existing center over the next few months, De Vita said, including Asics Outlet, Bebe, Disney Store, Hartmann Luggage, Loft Outlet and Tumi. She said the expansion project will provide considerable positive economic impact to the area, including about 300 construction jobs, along with an estimated 500 full- and parttime workers being employed

by Chicago Premium Outlets’ new stores.

N. Aurora debates whether to remain in cable, telecommunications consortium

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Village trustees are debating whether North Aurora should remain a member of the Southwest Fox Valley Cable and Telecommunications Consortium.

The consortium board coordinates cable and telecommunications services for North Aurora, Plano, Sandwich and Yorkville.

North Aurora has been a member of the consortium since about 2002.

Trustees discussed the issue at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting. The issue came up because the village’s current franchise agreement with Comcast expires in September.

The consortium oversees the public access programming for Fox Valley Television, a public and government access channel serving North Aurora, Plano, Sandwich and Yorkville. The channel is car-

ried on Comcast cable Channel 17. Government access programming is available on Channel 10.

The village’s intergovernmental agreement with the consortium provides that 40 percent of the cable franchise fees are paid to the consortium.

Village Trustee Laura Curtis questioned whether the village should continue in the consortium. She wondered how much programming Fox Valley Television provides for North Aurora. She said “it seems like a large cost for very little benefit.”

Mike Rennels, the manager of public access programming for Fox Valley Television, said he would like to work with the village.

“We would like to do more, but we need your help with that,” Rennels said. “We’re your television station. We’re here to work with you.”

Village Trustee Chris Faber said the village hasn’t done much to promote Fox Valley Television.

“It doesn’t mean that we can’t in the future,” Faber said.

“If you have an emergency situation, you don’t have time to think,” the Campton Hills resident said. “If you pay attention, you have a much better chance of being successful.”

Gov. Pat Quinn last month signed the Lauren Laman Bill into law, requiring all students in Illinois high schools to learn how to use an automatic external defibrillator (AED) and to administer CPR. The law Lauren Laman t o o k e f f e c t July 1 in time for the upcoming school year, which starts the week of Aug. 18 for districts in the Tri-Cities and Kaneland.

School officials for those districts said staff members would work this summer to ensure their curriculum and policies would be in compliance with the new law.

At least two school districts – Batavia Public School District 101 and Geneva School District 304 – already teach CPR and AED skills to students, officials said.

Lisa Meister, a Geneva High School health teacher and certified instructor with the American Heart Association, said students spend a unit learning CPR, AED and first aid for adults, children and infants, and they become certified in those areas.

In Batavia, CPR and emergency preparedness is included in health classes at the middle and high school levels, Chief Academic Officer Brad Newkirk said.

Even so, he said, the new law will prompt changes at Batavia. In addition to altering curriculum, he said, the district might need more equipment, and staff members need to figure out the initial logistical problem of providing AED and CPR training to all students – not just the

“There’s a little bit of an implementation glitch here,” Newkirk said.

But, he added, District 101 looks forward to complying with the law, as educators there understand and appreciate the situation that arose in St. Charles and the reason for the legislation.

Lauren Laman, 18, went into sudden cardiac arrest during a 2008 drill team practice at St. Charles North. Although an AED was about 40 feet from where she collapsed, it was not used, and paramedics were unable to resuscitate her when they arrived.

In 2009, George Laman

filed a lawsuit against St. Charles School District 303, the high school and three coaches for negligence in his daughter’s death. Court records show Judge James Murphy dismissed the case with prejudice in 2012, meaning it can’t be refiled.

When the teen’s family first started efforts for the Lauren Laman Bill, “nobody said we had a chance,” Laman said.

Now that it’s law, he said it doesn’t matter to him how schools incorporate AED and CPR training in their curriculum. He wants commitment from teachers.

“It think it is time for the teachers to get on board,” La-

man said. “This is an opportunity for teachers to set an example for their students and have the satisfaction of being able to save lives.”

Meister said she talks with her students about how people might act in an emergency. Some might experience fear, she said, and others might be willing to help if they aren’t in charge of a situation.

“The way we practice all these skills helps them feel more confident, so if they do have to be the person in charge they’re more comfortable with what they’re doing,” Meister said.

“A lot of our two-week unit is filled with a lot of practice.”

The platform allows schools and merchants to process payments via finger scan, contactless card, magnetic card or 2D/3D barcode, according to the website.

Janowiak said in the previous finger scan lunch payment system, money must be deposited in the student’s account by 8 a.m., or it is not

available to pay for lunch.

With PushCoin, as soon as there are funds in the account, it is available to pay for lunch, and no students will be turned away in the lunch line because money deposited after 8 a.m. is not available, Janowiak said.

Also, the district absorbed all the transaction fees of the previous system, but PushCoin has no transaction fees, though parents who pay with credit cards will have reduced transaction fees, she said.

“They offer a free electronic funding option, so parents can use an electronic check to fund the account with no fee,” Janowiak said.

Assistant Superintendent for Business Services Donna Oberg said last year the Rev Trak system cost the district $20,000 in transaction fees.

The company also will provide equipment, monitors and stands in the schools’ cafeterias at no additional cost, she said.

Parents will get real time reporting of all transactions via email of students’ purchases and warnings about low balances, she said.

PushCoin was tested as a pilot program in the high school in May and June with no problems from Sodexo food service staff learning the new system, Janowiak said.

The district will upload student records this summer and finger scan all students in preparation for the PushCoin lunch payment system.

If parents do not want the finger scan, students have other options such as by name, ID bracelet or student ID.

GENEVA – Paying for school lunches is about to become easier in the new school year, as Geneva District 304 will move to an easier, cheaper way for parents to provide funds in their students’ accounts.

At a presentation to the school board this week, technology director Elizabeth Janowiak said the new Webbased lunch debit system, PushCoin, is innovative and gives more flexibility and additional funding options to parents.

PushCoin will be rolled out Oct. 14 in the high school, Dec. 1 in the middle schools and Jan. 5 in the elementary schools, Janowiak said.

The suit doesn’t specify at which campus the group was trying to distribute fliers.

Rick Zirk, the director of land acquisitions for Orleans Homes, appeared at Monday’s meeting. Elburn Village President Dave Anderson suggested the idea of a website. Zirk said such a website could have links and logos that could be clicked on.

“I think we can propose something not unfair to a single-lot seller,” Zirk said, adding it could be “sort of a generic sign, but with a link to everybody.”

There was discussion about who might operate such a website, and it was thought that Orleans could do so. But before going forward with such a plan, officials said it would make sense to first contact the Blackberry Creek homeowners association.

Trustee Ken Anderson, who resides in Blackberry Creek, said he was eager to see such a proposal move forward.

“I want to get something out there,” Ken Anderson said, adding that “we have something going on, and we want to get people in.”

But, she noted, the new rate, which takes effect in September, won’t be as low as the previous rate of about 4.7 cents per kilowatt hour. It will be 7.32 cents per kilowatt hour.

“Energy prices are just sky-high,” Willrett said, “and ComEd is more competitive, too.”

A large increase in capacity charges – which energy suppliers must pay to power generators to ensure enough power will be produced to meet demand – as well as a rise in cost for the actual power contributed to the increased prices, according to the village.

Elburn aimed to get the cheapest rate as possible when it recently sought bids to renew its electric aggregation pro-

gram, Willrett said. She said FirstEnergy Solutions – the company the village currently works with – was the lowest of seven bidders.

The 7.32-cent fixed rate is contracted for three years, ending in September 2017. Customers automatically would be switched to ComEd if that utility company’s rate ever goes lower, Willrett said.

ComEd’s rate in June rose to 7.596 cents per kilowatt hour, plus or minus a floating purchased electricity adjustment that varies monthly, ac-

cording to the village. Eligible residential and small commercial accounts will receive an opt-out notice about the program details, Willrett said.

“Nothing’s really changing except for the rate,” she said.

“We knew that was going to happen. That’s the only thing we want people to be aware of.”

The municipal electric aggregation savings program was established in 2011 after voters authorized it with a referendum. Elburn reports it has resulted in a cumulative village-wide savings of $1,015,000

through May 2014. The average participating household reportedly has saved $561.

“It’s just another way that we can provide services at a cheaper rate,” Willrett said.

“Anything we can do to help offset monies coming out of their pocket is something we strive to do.”

starts volunteer program PARK DISTRICT DISH Angela Senkpeil The Batavia Park District is inviting the community to, “Be a part of the fun ... volunteer!”

According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, in 2012 more than a quarter of a million people donated their time and expertise as volunteers for park and recreation programs and services across the country, saving taxpayers millions of dollars in personnel costs.

In 2013, the Batavia Park District had more than 200 volunteers donate their time and effort through a variety of different projects. These volunteers were able to contribute a total of 1,500 hours, which helped save the district and taxpayers more than $13,000.

Being a volunteer does not just benefit the community, but it allows individuals to give back in a unique way.

“There is a feeling of accomplishment and pride that many volunteers feel once they have completed a project,” said Brittany Kovach, marketing and sponsorship coordinator.

The Batavia Park District’s new volunteer program will allow individuals, families, teens, school groups and even businesses and civic organizations the opportunity to donate their time. Whether it is to boost morale, obtain service hours or create a family memory, there is a place for everyone in the new program.

“Volunteers are a vital part of our organization,” Kovach said. “This new program is a way for us to build relationships with our volunteers. We want people to take ownership of the programs, events and parks within their community.”

Whether it is just an hour or a full day, participants can choose to volunteer for the Batavia Depot Museum, parks and natural resources, senior citizen activities or special events throughout the year.

Becoming a volunteer is easy. Interested individuals and groups can fill out a volunteer form to express their interest in the program. From that point, the volunteer will be contacted and a training date will be set. The training will help volunteers understand their duties and responsibilities. Each volunteer will receive a T-shirt, and the first 50 volunteers to sign up will receive a special gift.

“We hope this program will be a great outlet for the community,” Kovach said.

“We’re excited to see what we’ll be able to accomplish with our new program and all of our volunteers.”

2 sought in armed robbery KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – The Kane County Sheriff’s Office is searching for two suspects in an armed robbery that occurred Tuesday afternoon at an auto repair business at 1905 N. Farnsworth Ave., in Aurora Township.

The incident was reported at approximately 12:50 p.m.

According to the two victims, at approximately 11:50 a.m., two subjects armed with rifles approached their auto repair business, Technically Automotive, and demanded they give them jewelry, according to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

The victims did not have

any jewelry to give them, the release stated. The two suspects forced the victims inside the business and tied them up. The victims were ordered into a bathroom, according to the release.

The victims were told to stay in the business for 30 minutes before they could leave. Before being tied up, one of the victims gave the suspects approximately $2,000 in cash, the release stated.

The suspects left in an unknown direction of travel.

There is a jewelry store in the front of the building where the auto repair business is located.

One of the suspects was identified as a black man, 30 to 40 years old and between

5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet tall, weighing 200 pounds. He was wearing a black baseball hat, white pants, dark shoes, dark-rimmed glasses with curved amber lenses and garden style gloves.

The other suspect was described as a black female, 25 to 30 years old and 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighing 145 to 150 pounds.

She was wearing a dark black baseball hat, dark hooded shirt, baggy clothes, and a gold stud piercing in her tongue.

CASA Kane County to host fall conference

CAMPTON TOWNSHIP – At least two households in and near Campton Hills recently received threatening letters demanding they leave thousands of dollars at an intersection along the village’s western border, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

Residents of the 43W500 block of Hawkeye Drive in Campton Township reportedly told police that they found a letter on their truck’s windshield at about 7:45 a.m. Friday.

The letter referred to them by their first names, police reported, and instructed them to leave $3,000 in an unmarked envelope by the street sign at the corner of Anderson Road and Blue Larkspurs Lane, which is on the western edge

of Campton Hills.

The note included this threat: “We will be paying you a visit if you do not cooperate,” police reported.

Additionally, police said, the residents were told not to contact authorities.

A similar case also was reported in the village of Campton Hills. The residents didn’t feel it was a legitimate threat – they suspected it came from a neighborhood kid trying to make quick money – but wanted it documented, police said.

Undersheriff Pat Gengler said situations like this could be as simple as kids playing a trick on a friend or something more serious. He encouraged people to call authorities whenever they encounter any situation that seems suspicious.

“If something just doesn’t seem right, let us know,” Gengler said.

The U.S. needs fresh ideas for a new kind of unemployment BLOOMBERG NEWS The U.S. labor market is a long way from healed. The unemployment rate of 6.1 percent, down from 10 percent in 2009, is misleading: Long-term unemployment accounts for a much bigger share of the total than usual. Millions who would like full-time jobs are having to work part time. Millions more have given up looking for work and are no longer part of the count.

Lack of demand remains the chief problem. The Federal Reserve’s power to make up the shortfall seems to have reached its limit and a paralyzed Washington has said no to further fiscal stimulus. One neglected avenue remains, however: helping to connect the unemployed to companies that are doing well and looking to hire.

The unemployment rate varies widely from state to state – from 7.9 percent in Mississippi to 2.7 percent in North Dakota.

This shows what’s possible, but at the same time, it’s a puzzle: If labor markets are tight in some places and slack in others, why don’t the unemployed move? This is where policy could usefully focus. High mobility of labor always was seen as a particular strength of the U.S. economy, but lately it has been more myth than reality. Recently, labor mobility has fallen to its lowest since records began in the 1940s.

People can’t or won’t move for various reasons. The unemployed in Michigan may be unaware of openings in Utah.

They may lack the needed skills. Plus, moving is expensive: For people with a house to sell, mortgaged for more than it’s worth, moving may be unaffordable. And for families that rely on state-specific government assistance (as many of the unemployed do), moving is complicated. At modest cost, some of these problems can be addressed.

First, the government should do more to help unemployed workers search for new jobs. Studies comparing policies in a range of industrialized countries find that job-search assistance – in the form of job-brokerage services, referrals to training programs and help with the costs of relocating – is good value for money. It makes a difference and it’s cheap.

Subsidies for training or retraining also make sense. This involves bigger outlays, but good training programs can pass the cost-effectiveness test.

Granted, the record of the existing federal Trade Adjustment Assistance program is discouraging. Created in the 1960s and changed many times, the TAA was intended to help with job searches and relocation, as well as pay training subsidies to a narrow group of eligible candidates. Periodic evaluations have typically found poor results. The program should be simplified and then enlarged.

U.S. tax and welfare policies need to be streamlined, too. As things stand, both make it much harder for people to move.

Putting all this right won’t be easy. The first step is to acknowledge that the United States has a new kind of unemployment problem, and that solving it will demand new thinking.

Teaching his craft Skating director’s past includes international pairs figure skating

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Fox Valley Ice Arena skating director Rockne Brubaker mostly maneuvers around the past while teaching others his craft.

The one-time international pairs figure skater brings more relatable experience than he thinks. For instance, even elite athletes struggle. Just ask Brubaker, 28, who clearly recalls fighting his formative skating days in Algonquin.

“I threw about a 10-minute temper tantrum from what my mom told me,” Brubaker said, “but then I got up and she said I was pretty much immediately skating all across the ice.”

Fluidity remains the eventual goal for any skater, but Brubaker certainly knows there are many stepping stones to get there.

He took the reins of Fox Valley’s skate school in March, soon after falling short in his qualifying bid for the U.S. team at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

Fox Valley manager Paul O’Dacre, who encountered Brubaker at Leafs Ice Centre in Dundee in years past, made sure to allow some time to pass before presenting a new opportunity.

“It’s been great joining forces and seeing what he has in store for the program,” O’Dacre said.

Brubaker organizes classes and events both for basic skills skaters and those with more competitive endeavors in mind, whether in figure skating or hockey.

Spending much of his youth and adulthood in rinks lent itself to meticulous observation, arming Brubaker with plenty of ideas about how to approach his new position.

He begins, naturally, with fundamentals, which sometimes means re-evaluating the technique of those who have skated for months or years.

How a skater places his or her weight on the blade affects body positioning, and even a slight tweak can make moving much easier.

There’s a wide age range in the beginners classes, which meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings during the summer before adding a Saturday component for other seasonal sessions.

Brubaker’s students are as young as 3, but there are several adults sprinkled in, many following up on the interest of their own children.

“It’s never too late,” Brubaker said, referring both to skating and registration. For information, call him at the arena at 630-845-0132.

As for his own career, Brubaker said he’s unsure about his future international pursuits after a handful of misses at Olympic qualifying. He is

engaged to Stefania Berton, who was part of Italy’s Olympic pairs skating team at Sochi.

In early May, Brubaker, Berton and Brubaker’s younger brother, Collin, also a U.S. figure skater, were part of the creative team behind “Blades Beyond the Sea” a figure skating program at Fox Valley.

“I’ve had some bad luck in competition, but that is life and I’ve still been lucky in all the other opportunities I’ve been given,” Brubaker said.

Kaneland: Is this the year the Knights’ program finally comes down to earth?

Kaneland’s program has stacked Ws in remarkable fashion under coach Tom Fedderly, going 43-5 in the past four seasons.

But the Knights absorbed as many key graduation losses as any team in the area, and it’s tough to envision Kaneland being quite as dominant this fall.

That said, the Knights have earned the benefit of the doubt, and a manageable early schedule should buy Kaneland time to work out the kinks before conference play arrives.

St. Charles East: Can another Saints coach hit the ground running?

Former East coach Mike Fields had his best season with the Saints in his first year on the job, and new coach Bryce Farquhar would love to bottle some of that Year 1 mojo. But with a new quarterback to break in and the graduation of two-way standout Brannon Barry,

expectations – at least on the outside – figure to be tempered this season for a Saints team that has struggled against the Upstate Eight Conference River’s upper echelon in recent years.

St. Charles North: Will faster be better for North’s offense?

The North Stars are planning a swift offensive tempo this season as North looks to improve on all fronts after a 5-4 season wasn’t enough to crack the postseason in coach Rob Pomazak’s debut season.

Regardless of how quickly the North Stars break the huddle – if they huddle at all – any offensive strides will need to involve retooling up front for a new-look offensive line that must carry on without graduated standouts such as Chase Gianacakos and Camden Cotter.

We’re barely more than a month away from kickoff of the 2014 prep football season.

As teams wind down their summer camps, here is a sampling of some of the central questions area teams must answer as official preseason practice looms Aug. 11 ahead of opening night on Aug. 29.

Batavia: Which of Batavia’s skill players will emerge?

The Bulldogs’ most glaring graduation losses from last year’s IHSA Class 6A state championship team came at quarterback, running back and receiver.

There’s little doubt the Bulldogs’ offensive line is again going to be a load – a wonderful starting point for any offense – and the Bulldogs also boast several intimidating presences on defense. But if Batavia is going to remain among the state’s elite, some fresh faces at the marquee positions are going to need to assert themselves.

Geneva: Can the Vikings’ defense rise up?

Geneva’s offense hummed for much of the 2013 season, and there is little reason to think the touchdowns won’t pile up again this fall with Daniel Santacaterina, Pace Temple and Loudon Vollbrecht headlining an impressive mix of skill and brawn.

But when the Vikings’ program was at its strongest under veteran coach Rob Wicinski, Geneva’s defense was a worthy complement to the reliably potent offense.

That hasn’t consistently been the case during the program’s current three-season dry spell without a playoff win. But with potential impact defensive players such as Stephen Kemp, Matt Loberg and Wyatt Shodeen back to lead the charge, this could be the Vikings’ most complete team in a while.

For the second straight day, golfers navigated through the heat to complete their rounds.

“It was actually hotter today [than Monday], it felt like,” Kurosky said.

Per match play rules, a competitor can win without playing the full 18 holes.

That’s just one of a number of things Kurosky said she has read up on as she hopes to stick around Itasca for the rest of the week.

Source says Kevin Love will likely not join Bulls lineup

The New York Knicks’ newly re-signed star has started a fund to invest in technology startups with partner Stuart Goldfarb, a former NBC and Bertelsmann executive. M7 Tech Partners – that’s ’Melo No. 7, his jersey number – will focus on “early-stage digital media, consumer Internet and opportunistic technology startupst,” TechCrunch reports.

M7 has invested an undisclosed amount to Hullabaloo, which makes kids entertainment tailored for tablets.

Last year, Hullabaloo raised $1.8 million from investors including SV Angel, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, “Godfather of AdSense” Gokul Rajaram and Sugar founder Brian Sugar.

In announcing the partnership, Anthony states that he’s long “been interested in technology,” and will be looking to raise capital for companies that specialize in wearable tech. With the increasing push to incorporate Google Glass in professional sports, it seems these two areas of Anthony’s life might be destined to collide.

Having just signed an extension with the Knicks for around $125 million over five years, Anthony is the latest

NBA star to parlay his fortune into investment firms. Steve Nash’s Consigliere Brand Capital counts BirchBox and Contently among its success stories, while Michael Redd and Jamal Mashburn are finding life after basketball in venture capitalism. Hall of Famer David Robinson is perhaps the most well-known example, having co-founded Admiral Capital Group, a private equity firm specializing in real estate.

The trend of NBA players launching investment firms is part of the broader trend of athletes establishing business endeavors in preparation for their post-retirement careers.

Last month, Michael Jordan became second billionaire athlete and the first from the NBA, thanks in large part to his ownership stake in the Charlotte Hornets, his endless endorsement partnership with Nike, and ancillary businesses including restaurants and car dealerships.

These players seem to be heeding the warning provided by the bevy of retired players gone bankrupt. According to Mint.com, 60 percent of NBA players file for bankruptcy within five years of retirement.

From Latrell Sprewell to even a multiple champion such as Scottie Pippen, NBA history is riddled with cautionary tales, none with a higher fall from grace than Allen Iverson. In 2012, it was revealed that The

Answer had blown through $200 million in career earnings, save for a $32 million “Reebok fund” that will give $1 million a year until he’s 55.

Iverson’s an extreme case, a tragedy unique in the stark, swift demise of its protagonist but not unique in its course. In addition to the reckless spending and vulturistic entourage that so often accompany the sudden windfall of an NBA contract, basketball players often go broke because of poor asset management and financial illiteracy. The league and players’ union are trying to combat this, promoting a financial education program and a rookie transition program to help players manage their money during and after their playing days. Robinson, Nash and now Anthony are facing that aspect head on to ensure that history doesn’t repeat itself.

Anthony in particular might want to tread lightly, however. As much as misunderstanding finances contributes to players’ insolvency, so, too, do poor investment choices. Sure, Antoine Walker gambled away millions, but he also sunk more than $10 million in investment properties in Chicago’s South Side, owing to the spectacular incompetence of his financial advisor.

Let’s hope Anthony is more savvy with his wallet, but if anything, at least he has an experienced partner in Goldfarb.

By JOE COWLEY Chicago Sun-Times If the Bulls are back in the Kevin Love sweepstakes, as ESPN reported on Tuesday, that would be news to a source close to the situation.

“I would like to know which side let that out,” the source said, inferring that it sounded more like Minnesota playing chicken with more serious bidders like Golden State and Cleveland.

The Bulls were one of the first to throw a serious package at the Timberwolves back in June, headlined by Taj Gibson, Tony Snell and multiple draft picks, but it wasn’t to be.

The attention immediately turned to Carmelo Anthony once free agency began, and while the Bulls never contacted Minnesota to let them know they were no longer interested in Love, they haven’t done anything to sweeten the pot.

The signing of Pau Gasol and Nikola Mirotic leaves the Bulls very little cap room for a trade, meaning if there was a move to be made the money would match up if the Bulls would send the likes of Gibson, Jimmy Butler, Snell or Mike Dunleavy.

Doug McDermott wouldn’t be an immediate option, after the team announced he

signed his contract early Tuesday afternoon, which according to NBA rules, makes it so a rookie can’t be traded until at least 30 days after he puts his name on the dotted line.

According to a Bulls source earlier in the month, any move for Love would have to be contingent on the forward signing an extension past the 2014-15 season, and there were no indications given on what number he would be looking for.

Because of the Derrick Rose contract, the idea of two max contracts on one roster would really limit the depth the Bulls have been looking to build.

Other business: Besides the McDermott signing, the Bulls also announced that guard Aaron Brooks was officially added to the roster, giving them a proven back-up behind Derrick Rose and Kirk Hinrich.

“We’re excited to add a player as experienced and talented as Aaron to our group,” Bulls general manager Gar Forman said in a statement.

McDermott’s signing came in the wake of the rookie being named to the All-Summer League first team, as well as the USA Select Team to compete against Team USA starting next week in Las Vegas.

“You have a season ticket holder that bought a $110 ticket, and then I turn around because I project maybe not a good turnout in a game, and I start selling tickets for less than discounted prices, that’s unfair to the season-ticket holder. I’m not doing that,” Frazier said. “I would turn around and at the end of the day, we will donate them to a worthy cause, or we will do other things to get butts in the seats. We will not devalue our season-ticket holders.

To Chris Radford, with the success Northern Illinois football program has had, the Huskies sell themselves these days.

NIU’s assistant athletic director for ticket operations said the school has sold about 2,900 season tickets so far, with the season opener Aug. 28 against Football Championship Subdivision school Presbyterian at Huskie Stadium.

“It’s almost the exact same pace as last year,” Radford told Shaw Media. “Almost the same pace as last year, which in my mind is good, because last year our first home game was late September, so we had a whole other month to sell season tickets.”

Radford said that NIU with its recent success – four straight MAC West titles, a BCS bowl appearance and a 26-game home win streak – doesn’t need to rely on promotions to sell tickets.

But that doesn’t stop the school from introducing new promotions. One such event new this year is “The Yard” tailgate.

The Yard, located on the stadium’s west side, will feature live music and a beer garden before each home game.

Radford realizes the challenges involving NIU, such as the midweek games the MAC features each season. However, the Huskies have just one midweek MAC home game this season, Nov. 11 against rival Toledo.

“We feel that our product now, we have the 26-game win streak. The past 3-4 seasons, NIU football is a great product now,” Radford said. “We believe that, deservedly so, we shouldn’t have to do too many promotions to get people to come. ... Our [season] tickets range from $95 to $110 for a season ticket, we feel for most of college football that’s a great deal for the product we have.”

Overview: While the radical transformation of their defense has received the most offseason attention from the fans and media, the Bears also enter 2014 with a vastly different look on Joe DeCamillis’ special teams units.

The one constant is placekicker Robbie Gould, coming off another strong season (89.7 field goal conversion rate, including 3 of 4 from 50-plus) that leaves him just 92 points shy of surpassing Kevin Butler as the franchise’s all-time scoring leader. Barring injury, he should reach the milestone in 2014 – Gould hasn’t had less than 96 points in a season since his rookie year in ’05.

Heroes in ‘The Indestructibles’ make novel fly

By PETER CHIANCA More Content Now Since it was written by a colleague – Matthew Phillion, a fellow GateHouse Media journalist – I would have likely picked up “The Indestructibles” just as a show of support. But I challenge anyone to resist this plot description, whether you know Matt or not: “A solar powered girl. A ballerina vigilante. A boy with the alien sharing his brain. A werewolf. A girl with a black hole for a heart. This is the next generation of heroes Doc Silence has gathered together, a random collection of amazing kids he hopes to train to make the world a better place.”

He had me at werewolf.

“The Indestructibles” is a so-called young adult novel, although to quote Stephen Colbert, that usually just means it’s a regular novel that people actually read. And this one is definitely well suited to your average 12-year-old superhero fanatic.

But if you’re like some of us, you have an inner 12-year-old that you can access at a moment’s notice, sort of like Bruce Banner does with the Hulk in “The Avengers.” (“That’s my secret, Cap – I’m always 12.”) If that’s you, and you know who you are, you’ll probably get almost as much out of “The Indestructibles” as any prepubescent superhero junkie.

Phillion deals in plenty of familiar comic book tropes, and it’s not hard to draw parallels between his characters and others that came before them – the mystical Doc Silence evokes elements of Dr. Strange, Kate “Dancer” Miller has Batman written all over her, and Solar, a sunshine-powered superheroine, fits the Superman template – although it’s refreshing to have the book’s one truly indestructible hero be female.

But there’s plenty in “The Indestructibles” that you haven’t seen before, including a sentient storm that provides the main obstacle for our fledgling heroes, and a winning invention in Entropy Emily, a wisecracking nerdette who also happens to be powerful enough to capture entire hurricanes in an anti-gravity bubble – and whose mother has a heroic secret of her own.

Phillion ramps up the action often enough to keep things moving, and writes battle scenes in such a way that you can actually picture what’s going on, which is not as easy as it sounds.

And sly pop culture references – Harry Potter, Dr. Who, Bill Bixby’s TV Hulk

But in the end, it’s the heroes’ welldrawn personalities that make “The Indestructibles” fly. Straylight, the laser-zapping alien symbiote who’s quick to develop crushes on female adversaries, and Titus the angry (and wouldn’t you be?) teenage werewolf handily round out the super-crew, even if it’s the women who carry the show.

And Phillion doesn’t give the villains

short shrift either – a cyborg assassin with conscience issues and a truly frightening sorceress with a shadowy connection to Doc are just two of a litany of antagonists that make the heroes’ comings-of-age super-challenges convincing.

In short, it’s the rare young superhero fan who won’t find himself or herself plowing through “The Indestructibles” in as few sittings as possible – and the rare older fan who won’t want to scoop it up as soon as junior finishes.

ADVICE Girl, cousin need counseling after assault Dear Abby: My granddaughter “Cindy,” age 2, was being watched by her mommy’s ex-sister-in-law and her sons. Cindy went to her mommy and said, “Bubby hurt me.” Bubby is what she calls her 10-year-old cousin. Her mother called the police. A policeman spoke to her and said there wasn’t enough evidence. Now my granddaughter is scared of men.

The police went and talked to the cousin who said he “accidentally touched her down there with her pull-up on.” DCFS was called in, and again it was a man. We took Cindy to a female doctor and Cindy told the doctor everything that happened to her. Now she wakes up having nightmares and yells, “No, Bubby. Stop!”

What’s a grandmother to do to help her? We need justice for Cindy. – Distraught Grandmother Dear Distraught: You may need justice for Cindy, but what Cindy needs right now is professional help to get past the trauma of what

Treatments for actinic keratosis rarely leave scars Dear Doctor K: I saw my doctor about a patch of rough, brown skin that I noticed on my upper arm. He said it is actinic keratosis and needs to be removed. Is it cancer? How will it be removed?

Dear Reader: Actinic keratosis (AK) is a precancerous skin condition. That means it is not cancer now, but is likely to become cancerous if left untreated.

AK appears as raised, scaly pink or red-brown rough patches on the skin. The patches are most likely to appear on the face, back of the hands or other areas commonly exposed to the sun. They can cause discomfort and itching.

Doctors have a variety of methods to remove areas of actinic keratosis. Most treatments can remove AK spots without permanent scarring: • Cryotherapy. “Cryotherapy” means “cold treatment.” The standard treatment for AK is to freeze the area with liquid nitrogen, the temperature of which is well below freezing. Inflammation, swelling and blistering may occur following the treatment.

A small scab forms, and then healthy new skin emerges as it heals.

• Creams and gels. A prescrip-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff tion cream containing a chemotherapy drug can remove a patch of AK. But these creams cause sun sensitivity and, often, considerable discomfort. Another drug applied to the skin stimulates the immune system to release chemicals that fight cancer cells and viruses. This treatment causes AK patches to become inflamed, crust over and heal. Other topical products are also available.

• Deeper treatments. If your AK is widespread – if you have multiple AK patches on your face, for example – you may need deeper treatments. These include laser resurfacing or a chemical peel. A chemical peel dissolves the outer layers of the skin with a chemical solution. Laser resurfacing and chemical peels can involve local or general anesthesia. Depending on how deeply the treatments penetrate the skin, they may cause considerable swelling. Another effective treatment involves scraping away damaged tissue and using an

electric probe to kill any remaining precancerous cells.

• Photodynamic therapy.

Photodynamic therapy uses light to activate a drug that destroys AK cells. The AK patches crust over and heal. This therapy is appropriate when there are many AK spots on the face and scalp.

• Surgery. While not usually necessary, various types of surgery also may be used. The patch of AK can be cut out. This needs to be done in a surgical suite and usually requires stitches.

Simpler forms of surgery such as curettage and dermabrasion can be done in the doctor’s office.

Curettage and dermabrasion involve scraping away the top layer of skin, which contains the AK. It’s not unlike what you do when peeling a carrot.

I spent a lot of time in the sun as a child, and I’ve had more than my share of AKs. They’ve been treated in various different ways, and they’ve all healed nicely.

Foods do not cause acne Dear Teens: Every week I receive four or five inquiries asking me if acne is caused by eating certain foods such as french fries, or especially, chocolate.

I’ve answered this question numerous times and the answer is always the same: Foods, including chocolate and greasy junk foods, do not cause complexion problems.

This information comes directly from the American Academy of Dermatology. But a well-balanced, nutritious diet can help skin to be more vibrant and healthy.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 20 and recently married a man who is 30 and has custody of a 12-year-old son. The boy’s mother moved to Mexico and gave custody for him to my husband.

We are not hurting financially, so we want to start out giving him an allowance every week. We also plan to assign him household chores. If he doesn’t perform his chores to our satisfaction, should we not give him his allowance for a period of time? I think this is a reasonable punishment.

My husband is leaving this “problem” for me to solve. – New Mom, Bakersfield, Calif.

Dear New Mom: If family funds are sufficient, I believe all pre-teens and teens should be provided an allowance.

With proper guidance, the child learns the value of money, how and when to spend some of it, and how to save for a “rainy day.”

I also believe that all pre-teens and teens should be assigned household chores that can be satisfactorily completed, but the allowance and chores

These could include: no use of cellphone, shortened curfew, grounding, limited television viewing, etc.

Our parents both have full-time jobs and have no idea my brother is helping himself and his friends to Dad’s wellstocked liquor cabinet.

My brother made me promise not to squeal on him.

Yesterday I came home early from summer school and caught my brother’s friend and his girlfriend enjoying “cocktails” while my brother was “making out” on the couch with his girlfriend. At least my brother was not drinking.

South starts with seven top tricks: three spades, one heart, two diamonds and one club. He must get his extra tricks from dummy’s diamonds. And there is a natural reaction, after winning the first trick in hand, to play a diamond to dummy’s king and cash the diamond ace, planning on playing a third round. Here, though, when West discards a spade (not a heart!) on the second diamond, even with the heart finesse working, the contract can no longer be made.

The correct technique is to duck (lose) the first diamond trick.

Then, if the defenders continue plugging away at spades, South can win in his hand and play three rounds of diamonds to establish two winners in the dummy while the spade ace remains as an entry.

If West is allowed to hold the first diamond trick, he knows that the spade suit is hopeless. He should shift to his club king, under which East should signal with his jack. Then the contract fails.
