Officials deny forest preserve district request KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – Members of the Elburn Village Board on Monday night unanimously voted against a proposal by the Forest Preserve District of Kane County to buy property on Route 47.

For weeks, board members had considered the district’s plan to buy the property, at 1001 S. Main St., as a new home for the district’s Natural Resources Department.

On Monday, several Kane County Board members attended the meeting to seek support for the plan and also to push Elburn trustees to make a decision one way or the other. Kane County Board members also are forest preserve commissioners.

“We are not trying to encroach on you,” said Mike Kenyon, a Kane County Board

member and the president of the forest preserve district.

“We want to be a part of Elburn.”

The property is the location of the former Patten rental facility. The purchase would be 9.14 acres, with the south parcel in unincorporated Kane County and the north part in Elburn’s village limits. Village permission is needed for the forest preserve district to buy the land within Elburn.

County officials said the location was ideal and would save money for taxpayers, since the existing building at the location would be a good fit for the plan. Opponents argued the land would be better suited for future commercial development, and the village and other entities, including Kaneland School District 302, would lose money because the forest preserve district would be exempt from paying taxes on the property.

Monica Meyers, the executive director, and Drew Ullberg, the director of human resources, spoke in favor of the proposal, as well as others in public comment, including longtime Elburn resident Ken Gustafson, who said he previously opposed the plan but had changed his mind and now supported it.

There also were Elburn residents speaking against the proposal, including Al Herra, who argued “this is not the time” for such a project.

Board members Bill Grabarek, Dave Gualdoni, John Krukoff, Pat Schuberg and Jeff Walter voted against the proposal. Ken Anderson, who serves as the county’s environmental and water resource

division director, abstained.

Krukoff said he could have supported the proposal if it had included “some unique property” that had been part of the district’s master plan.

“They are trying to save a few dollars on the backs of our residents,” said Krukoff, who added the lost tax dollars would have to be made up somewhere. He said it would be a kind of “tax increase on our residents.”

Schuberg said it was difficult to support the plan because it was in “such a visible spot.”

Village President Dave Anderson called the issue “a tough one.”

“You deserve an answer,” he said to those representing the forest preserve district. “I know that’s not the one you were looking for.”

Key step comes soon for Anderson Road project in Elburn

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – A significant step in the Anderson Road extension project will occur next month, as the intersection of Anderson and Route 38 will reopen.

The intersection has been closed since last month to rebuild the road between Route 38 and Prairie Valley Street as part of the project. Anderson Road will be extended beyond Prairie Valley, but the access for next month will be available only through Prairie Valley, which is where John Stewart Elementary School sits.

The issue came up at Monday night’s Elburn Village Board meeting, when Village President Dave Anderson said the access had to be done before the first day of school, which is Aug. 19. Dave Boesch, construction chief for the Kane

County Division of Transportation, said the access should be available by Aug. 15.

The project ultimately will provide a bridge that will cross the Union Pacific tracks in town, providing an alternative for drivers who frequently must wait for trains at Route 47. Boesch said the entire project is on schedule to be completed before 2016, saying “there is a very, very good chance we can finish it this year.”

Boesch said the project must be completed in 220 working days or less, and he said workers would have until spring 2016. Although he said rainy conditions have made for a “horrible” construction season, the project has gone forward. Anderson Road previously ended at Prairie Valley, and Boesch said workers had to demolish the stretch of road and rebuild it. The road

will extend further east of the school. As far as the rest of the project, he said, “we have quite

a bit of work ahead of us.”

“We would really like to deliver it this year,” Boesch said.

Sugar Grove Village Dreams Dance Academy to Board vacancy filled move to St. Charles this fall Ted Koch to fill seat left by Bob Bohler

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Ted Koch, a 10-year resident of Sugar Grove, recently took his seat on the Sugar Grove Village Board to fill a board vacancy.

He fills the vacancy left by longtime village Trustee Bob Bohler, who died in April at age 64. He had been battling cancer. Bohler had served on the board since 1997.

Koch will serve the remainder of the term, which ends in April 2017. Village trustees approved his appointment to the board.

Koch was Sugar Grove Village President Sean Michels’ choice to fill the position. Before being named to the board, Koch was a member of the village’s police pension board, and he is involved in the Sugar Grove Chamber of Commerce.

He was one of eight people to apply for the position. Michels said he was surprised by the amount of interest in the vacancy.

Koch stepped down from the police pension board after being named to the Sugar Grove Village Board. Michels said the village will be working to fill that vacancy.

A dance academy has outgrown its LaFox location and is headed to St. Charles this fall.

Dreams Dance Academy will move in September to a 4,100-square-foot space at 2460 W. Main St. in St. Charles.

Academy owner Jenny O’Brien said she will be able to offer more classes and serve more students by relocating. Enrollment has grown to nearly 175 students since the academy formed in September 2012, O’Brien wrote in an email Monday.

“I wish we didn’t have to leave the town of LaFox and this quaint space I adore so much – but in order to continue our caliber of training and accommodate our growth, we need to move to succeed,” O’Brien wrote in a letter to

rehearsal numbers, O’Brien wrote in the letter.

O’Brien began planning for the move in 2014 and settled on the St. Charles space earlier this year, according to the letter.

Before she announced the move, O’Brien wrote that she met with academy parents who said they were willing to drive further east so their children could attend the classes, especially since many of them drive to Randall Road for various activities and shopping.

What sets the academy apart is an emphasis on giving back and community involvement for the dancers, O’Brien wrote in the email.

“I have worked so hard to create the positive and unique environment at [the academy], and I plan to work even harder to keep it as we continue to grow,” O’Brien wrote.

CORN BOIL TIME ARRIVES Sugar Grove festival takes place this weekend

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A weekend of music, kid-friendly activities and food is headed to Sugar Grove.

The Sugar Grove Corn Boil gets underway with carnival rides starting at 5 p.m.

Thursday. On Friday, the rest of the festival gets going with an opening parade and community ceremony. The Corn Boil is at 61 Main St., in Sugar Grove.

The first band, 7th Heaven, hits the stage at 6 p.m.

Friday. Saturday and Sunday will be filled with activities, starting with a 5K run at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, with highlights including the Bob Bohler Memorial Fireworks Show at 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

On Sunday, bands performing Christian-based music will take the stage. There also will be contests and bingo throughout the weekend.

There will be food served, including the festival’s signature dish, corn.

She said the festival is special because so much fun can be had for free. The festival features a kids zone Saturday and Sunday, with attractions, such as Dave Herzog’s Marionettes, Ronald McDonald, the Dave DiNaso Traveling World of Reptiles and the Scott Piner Magic Show. There also is an ice cream-eating contest.

“The kid zone is absolutely free,” Coffman said. “The ice cream-eating contest is free, and those kids can go and have fun and win a medal.”

She said the festival’s a way for the community to connect. At 5 p.m. Friday, the festival will welcome local entrants in the parade. That will be followed by an annual ceremony that includes the naming of the Sugar Grove Citizen of the Year, as well as the Donna Marcus Scholarships. This year, veterans of the Vietnam War are invited to the parade as part of a cele-

Kris Monn, the district’s assistant superintendent for finance and operations, gave school board members Tuesday a presentation on the 2015-16 preliminary bud-

get, which shows revenues of $87.9 million and expenses of $87.7 million, for a surplus of $205,446. In the proposed budget, property tax revenues are expected to grow from $62.2 million to about $63 million, or an increase of $524,017.

“Property taxes have been a very stable revenue source for us,” Monn said.

al state aid will go down from $3 million to about $2.8 million, or a $266,816 decrease.

Key expenditure assumptions include $1.3 million in capital projects, including an estimated $441,500 for replacing the boiler at Rotolo Middle School, $282,250 in parking lot improvements at Grace McWayne Elementary School, and $90,200 in athletic field improvements at H.C.

The board voted to place the tentative budget on public display, and to set a public hearing on the budget for 6 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Rosalie M. Jones Administration Center, 335 W. Wilson St. The board is set to vote on the budget at its Sept. 22 meeting.

This was Monn’s last budget presentation to the board.

Monn, who started with the district in 2009, is leaving to become the new school superintendent for Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201.

“You will be missed,” Batavia School Superintendent Lisa Hichens told Monn.

Monn’s last day with the district is Thursday. Hichens said the district will be filling Monn’s position.

Ex-village leader raises multiple issues with board

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – The former Campton Hills village president once again shared several concerns with the current president and trustees Tuesday at its regular meeting.

Patsy Smith said the May 18 resignation of former village trustee Al Lenkaitis Jr. was invalid because of improper notary public documentation, therefore making the appointment of his replacement, Mike Tyrrell, invalid, as well as Tyrrell’s meeting votes invalid.

Smith also said, among other issues, the village has not yet posted her annual president’s report for the fis-

cal year that ended April 30 on the village’s website.

“I think that if you are going to be open and honest … that you would share that information with the public,” Smith said at the meeting.

Smith had been Campton Hill’s only president since its 2007 incorporation until then-village trustee Harry Blecker was elected president in the April 7 consolidated election. Smith ran as a write-in candidate during the April election.

As part of meeting procedure, Blecker said before the start of the public comment session, questions would not be answered during the session. Smith spoke again at the meeting when trustees took public comments before

its approval of the fiscal 2016 appropriation ordinance.

Smith said there was no information in the ordinance on the specific salaries village employees were receiving, but Village Administrator Jennifer Johnsen said those details were not required to be part of the ordinance.

Blecker at one point told Smith she would be removed from the meeting if she continued to talk about issues not related to the appropriations ordinance. Smith eventually left on her own along with the rest of the audience when the trustees adjourned to a scheduled closed session.

Smith previously raised concerns at the village board’s July 7 meeting.

SUGAR GROVE – Sugar Grove trustees Tuesday approved a 20-year extension of its existing boundary agreement with North Aurora, following that village’s action Monday night to do the same thing.

The current agreement was set to expire in 2020, records show. The terms of the extended agreement are identical to the one already in place, officials said.

“We had updated our boundary agreement with Montgomery, and it was a good time to update the oth-

er boundary agreement,” village President Sean Michels said. “The discussion was real quick, no reason to change it. They agreed to extend it.”

Michels said village officials also have had talks with Aurora about extending its boundary agreement with Sugar Grove, as well.

Trustee Kevin Geary said the agreement is to the village’s advantage to have boundary issues worked out for when development does come.

North Aurora village President Dale Berman said the boundary agreement is one the two villages have had all

Born: Feb. 26, 1921; in Clinton, IA Died: July 17, 2015; in St. Charles, IL Anna E. Vant, 94, of St. Charles, passed away Friday, July 17, 2015, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born February 26, 1921, in Clinton, Iowa.

Anna was a member of St. Michael Church in Aurora, IL and a past president of the St. Michael Ladies’ Auxiliary. Anna worked as a department manager in the fine china department for Sears Roebuck in Chicago for many years. After retirement, she and her husband Victor, moved to the family farm in St. Charles where they lived together until Victor’s death in 2009. After her husband’s death, Anna remained in their home and was well cared for by her two sons, Victor and George. She enjoyed baking, knitting and was an avid reader of books until macular degeneration destroyed her eyesight.

Anna is survived by her two sons, Victor (Patricia) Vant and George (Kathleen) Vant; six grandchildren, Nicole (Sean) Hughes, Rebecca Vant, Jennifer Vant, Ellen Vant, Thomas Vant, and Terence Vant; a great grandson, William Hughes; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor (2009); her parents, Theresa (Culic) and Louis Peres; and 11 of her 12 siblings.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, July 24, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael Church.

Her body will lie in state Friday morning at St. Michael Church from 9:00 a.m. until the funeral hour at 10:00 a.m. Fr. Aurel Pater will officiate with interment at St. Michael Cemetery. Batavia heats up for annual State Championship Chili Cook-Off Local Batavia residents Bill and Cheryl Pierson brought the first Chili Cookoff to the city of Batavia in October 1992. The first cookoff was in front of Batavia’s City Hall, which at that time, was only a parking lot.

The event also was the first Chili Appreciation Society International – or CASI – sanctioned cook-off in the entire state of Illinois. The first State Championship Chili Cook-Off was held the following July at the Batavia VFW. For nearly 20 years, the Piersons have been working with the Batavia Park District and the Batavia Chamber of Commerce to put on the event. But in 2014, after running the event for 21 years, Bill and Cheryl decided to hand over the reins.

With so much to accomplish, the Piersons knew they needed to reach out for help within the community.

“The park district was our obvious choice to take over,” Pierson said. “We wanted to keep the event in Batavia, and the park district had been assisting us for a number of years. They had more resources than we did, and bringing in the Chamber of Commerce even improved that situation.

Now the cook-off can grow far beyond what we could do.”

PARK DISTRICT DISH Marissa Pasillas This year’s event will be Saturday at the Riverwalk. A beer garden will be added to the cook-off for residents to enjoy, along with the plethora of chili they will have the opportunity to taste. On top of that, souvenir beer cups will be available to buy.

It’s quite an honor for Batavia to host such a significant event during the CASI “chili year.” Because September is the last month in the chili year, Batavia’s event will be the final cookoff that determines which chefs will have the opportunity to compete in the Terlingua International Chili Championship in Terlingua, Texas.

“The cook-off is the Illinois state championship for CASI. This is a statewide event that has been held in Batavia for 23 years,” Pierson said. “It draws cooks from throughout the state and beyond. People in CASI know where Batavia is, and that’s really something for Batavia to be proud of.”

There are three divisions chili cooks from all over the state can compete in: CASI, Traditional and Restaurant.

sion is non-bean chili that is scored by judges based on the criteria of aroma, red color, consistency, taste and aftertaste. The Traditional division is open to local cooks, and there are no restrictions on ingredients.

For both CASI and Traditional, chili must be cooked on site. Local businesses also can enter the Restaurant division to compete for serious bragging rights, along with a People’s Choice award.

This free event will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Batavia Riverwalk. Chefs, restaurants and residents from around the state are welcome to submit their chili into one of the three divisions. If you don’t want to compete, you can just come to eat. Concessions and the beer garden will be open to the public starting at 1 p.m.

Chili tasting cups will be available for $5, beginning at 2 p.m. And awards will begin about 4 p.m.

Constance “Connie” Van Bogaert passed away suddenly in the early hours of Monday, July 20, 2015, at St. Anthony Hospital in Rockford, IL. Gone from our sight, but never our hearts, she will be greatly missed.

Connie was born March 29, 1953, to parents Joseph and Anne Van Bogaert Reines (Nee Adams) in St. Charles, IL. Connie was a proud graduate of Mt. Saint Mary’s Girls Academy, formerly of St. Charles, and Copley School of Nursing formerly of Aurora, and earned a bachelor of Nursing from Aurora University.

She spent her career as a nurse at Copley Memorial Hospital in Aurora until numerous back surgeries brought an early retirement, she also spent several years as Director of Nursing for a home health agency.

Connie’s passion was crafting of all sorts; cards, jewelry, and anything that kept her hands busy. Connie made sure her beloved family each received a homemade Christmas ornament each year, all signed KONI. She is survived by her siblings, Carol (Karl) Pasker, Cathy (Bob) Brill, Mary (Mark) Hauser, Bob (Linda) Reines, Patricia Reines, Therese (Todd) Augustine; 12 nieces and nephews, 1 great niece and nephew.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Van Bogaert and Anne Reines (Ray) Reines.

A visitation will be held Thursday, July 23, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce, Elburn, IL. Private family interment will happen at a later date.

Resident opens insurance agency Survey aims to find what businesses want

With the help of the Center for Governmental Studies at Northern Illinois University, the EDC is conducting a survey on local businesses.

The CGS assists Illinois communities in various areas of community development, and its survey research team completes approximately 40 projects each year.

Annette Theobald, a member of the EDC and owner of Paisano’s Pizza and Grill and Eddie Gaedel Pub and Grill, wrote in an email the EDC is trying to make sure that current businesses are happy, attract new businesses into the area and let residents know what kinds of products the businesses are selling.

The EDC was formed in 2013 and had its first meeting in November of that year. The purpose of the EDC is to promote current businesses and attract new business.

Elburn Village Administrator Erin Willrett said the EDC is “trying to get a feel of what the businesses feel about the village, one way or the other. ... We want to make sure that the village is doing everything we can to support the current businesses.”

Willrett said this survey will “help address concerns and improve on processes” that local business owners may have.

As of Tuesday, 70 of the 142 businesses that were emailed the survey link have completed it.

Some of the questions in the survey include: What has had a positive/negative impact on your business? What is your view on Elburn’s future growth?

If your current employees needed training, in which areas do they need it? Why did you choose to have your business in Elburn?

Willrett said the surveys had to be completed by Friday.

Willrett said the commission is “going to look at trends, and we are going to look at overall concerns and positives. ... Hopefully, we’ll get some themes out of this survey so we can start addressing some concerns and moving along from there.”

Willrett said she hasn’t gotten the results back yet.

When she receives the results, the EDC will review them and then determine which direction they want to go from there.

The EDC normally meets on the second Friday of every month, with the next meeting Aug. 14 at Elburn Village Hall, 301 E. North St., Elburn.

ELBURN – As an insurance agent, Elburn resident Dave Broz said he tries to educate his customers about what “Everyone knows there are so many options for insurance,” he said. “Everyone also knows that insurance policies are complex.”

Broz, who has been an insurance agent since 2003, recently opened his own insurance agency, Railside Citrus Insurance Agency, at 109 N. Main St., Suite B, above Schmidt’s Towne Tap in downtown Elburn.

portant to my client and go out and approach multiple insurance companies and get proposals and help my client pick out which proposal is the best,” he said.

Broz also is heavily involved in the Elburn community, including being president of the Elburn Lions Club last year. Broz said he enjoys giving back to the community.

“I have a sincere, heartfelt desire to help people,” he said.

Bridge construction could begin in March

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Construction on Longmeadow Parkway – a project that will bring a four-lane bridge to northern Kane County – is expected to begin next year.

Tom Rickert, the county’s deputy director of transportation, told the Transportation Committee on Tuesday that a November letting for the project will likely lead to a March groundbreaking.

The Longmeadow project will add about 5.6 miles of road from Route 62 across

the Fox River to Huntley Road in the Algonquin, Carpentersville and Lake in the Hills area.

The committee supported two resolutions tied to the first stage of construction, which is from Huntley Road to Randall Road.

The first resolution addressed an intergovernmental agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation that will provide for federal reimbursement toward a portion of the construction from Huntley Road to west of the Randall Road intersection.

Rickert said the first

stage of construction will be funded by state and federal funds at 91 percent, which is about $6.9 million.

He said the county’s share will be at 9 percent, which amounts to nearly $700,000. Overall costs have been estimated at $120 million.

The committee also supported a resolution about a Phase III construction engineering services agreement with Itasca-based Bollinger, Lach and Associates Inc. The negotiated contract is for an amount not to exceed $619,311.65, according to an agenda document.

Kane County Board to act on rezoning former Al Capone’s Hideaway for restaurant

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The family working to open a restaurant at the former Al Capone’s Hideaway and Steakhouse property is on track to getting its zoning request approved, albeit with concessions.

The County Development Committee on Tuesday supported the zoning petition with the stipulation to exclude outdoor amplified mu-

sic after several of the property’s neighbors expressed concerns.

That stipulation was in addition to those requested by staff, which addressed outdoor lighting, hours of operation and both inside and outside amplified sound.

“It’s your responsibility to keep those neighbors happy,” Kane County Board member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, told petitioner Jeremy Casiello.

His family seeks to open

a “family-friendly bar and grill restaurant” on the St. Charles Township site, he said, acknowledging people might describe the eatery in other ways.

Those speaking during public comment referred to the restaurant as a sports bar. They expressed concerns about having such an establishment in a quiet, residential area because of the traffic and noise it would bring.

“The Hideaway was a good neighbor,” resident Dale Seidel said, adding the petitioners “seem to be something quite different.”

Ken Johnson, an attorney representing the Casiello family, said his clients intend to work with the residents.

For example, he said, they won’t install TVs outside if it upsets the neighbors.

“They want to be good neighbors,” Johnson said.

After the petition received

support from the committee, Johnson and Casiello responded to residents’ in the hallway outside the board room.

Casiello said it is great the petition is moving forward.

“We’ve been pretty patient,” he said, adding his family has also “conceded to a lot.”

The zoning petition must be approved by the County Board. Its next meeting is set for Aug. 11.

But when she approached Sugar Grove officials about spraying for mosquitoes, she said she was dissatisfied to hear the abatement program is limited to treating catch-basins with briquettes of larvicide.

“I was very disappointed in it,” McCannon said.

Village Administrator Brent Eichelberger said Sugar Grove might get a handful of such complaints in any given year.

Sugar Grove doesn’t spray because of information mosquito abatement professionals have provided throughout the years, he said.

For a community like Sugar Grove – one that is spread out and intertwined with forest preserves, open spaces and farm fields – spraying isn’t a cost-effective solution, Eichelberger said.

He said abatement method is effective for a limited amount of time and can vary depending on conditions.

Instead the village works to control the mosquito larva by placing briquettes in village owned and maintained sys-

tems, mainly the stormwater system.

The village encourages residents to help control the mosquito population by eliminating places of standing water or other known breeding sites, he said.

In an electronic newsletter this month, the village provided mosquito-control tips. Tips included changing the water in birdbaths and wading pools at least weekly and disposing of cans, old tires, buckets, plastic sheeting and other items that can hold water.

Residents are also welcome to do their own spraying, Eichelberger said, describing it as “an individual or neighborhood decision.”

McCannon said she was concerned about the mosquito population because West Nile – a virus transmitted by infected mosquitoes – has been detected in Kane County.

This month, the Kane County Health Department reported a mosquito trap near Elburn tested positive for the virus. It was the first evidence of such activity in Kane County this season.

Illness from West Nile is usually mild, but serious illness and death are possible, according to the health department. Those older than 50 have the highest risk of severe disease.

Trump challenge THE WASHINGTON POST

It’s rare that we dedicate our attention to marginal presidential candidates.

But for a man as objectionable as Donald Trump, we will make an exception.

Trump will flame out of the race, eventually.

The big question is what effect his irresponsible demagoguery will have on Washington – and that poses a test to other, more credible candidates in both parties.

The best-case scenario is that his run will force those other would-be presidents to ask some bracing questions.

Do they, too, at times and in their own ways, adopt Trump’s disfigured moral compass, encouraging voters to embrace anger, selfishness and suspicion?

Can they instead be more like Trump’s latest victim, Arizona Sen. John McCain, a thoroughly honorable public servant who has resisted the urge to dish out the sort of poison Trump offers to voters?

Over the past few days, Americans have seen a deep contrast in the exhibition of character.

After bizarre and offensive statements about how illegal immigrants are “rapists,” Trump belittled McCain’s war record, questioned his status as a war hero and sarcastically stated: “He’s a war hero because he was captured.

I like people that weren’t captured.”

McCain wasn’t just captured; he was brutally tortured by the North Vietnamese. Yet he refused special treatment or the early release he was

offered.

Around that time, Trump was gallivanting around Manhattan, having obtained multiple draft deferments that allowed him to avoid military service. It is no surprise Trump can’t appreciate authentic heroism; his idols growing up appear to have been Broadway and Hollywood showmen, not people with McCain’s proven mettle.

There is McCain’s hard course of risking disfigurement and death for irreducible principles: honor, patriotism, personal integrity.

Or there is Trump’s abandonment of any sense of shame in order to satisfy a common narcissism that equates grabbing attention with demonstrating quality. On the one hand is a politics that encourages Americans to be better than their basest instincts.

On the other is extreme pandering that tickles populist nerve endings without regard to accuracy, fairness or consequences.

The Republican Party was privileged to have McCain as a presidential candidate, albeit a losing one.

It is now cursed by association with Trump, a man whose foremost political talent is to reflect the worst instincts of American society.

Other presidential candidates should take note. Not because Trump’s approach, if honed and translated into base-rousing dog whistles, might not attract votes. But because no one wants to live in a country whose leaders have no conception of courage.

LISLE – St. Charles East baseball coach Len Asquini and his Saints came to Benedictine University on Tuesday with one goal in mind.

They wanted to advance to today’s semifinals of the Phil Lawler Summer Classic, which required winning one game Tuesday.

After losing the opener, 2-0 to Benet, Asquini said he was “confident the guys would respond,” and did they ever.

East had two separate seven-run innings en route to a 17-6, six-inning win over Libertyville in an elimination game.

After being stymied by Benet starting pitcher Joey Christensen and his one-hit, 10 strikeout shutout, East’s bats exploded for 13 hits and 17 runs against Libertyville.

The two teams traded three runs in each half of the second inning, but the Saints responded with seven runs in the fourth, thanks in large part to a three-run home run off the bat of Monty Carbonell.

Carbonell had East’s only hit against Benet, and finished 3 for 5 with five RBIs and two runs scored in the day’s finale.

Throwback Tuesdays give fans taste of 1991 ticket prices

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Promotional guru Mike Veeck, son of Bill and the father of “Disco Demolition Night,” splits time between executive jobs in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Charleston, S.C., these days.

He briefly turned his attention Tuesday to some stadium seats in between, lauding the Cougars for their latest “Throwback Tuesday,” a venture that rolls ticket prices back to 1991, the year of the club’s inaugural season in Geneva.

“I think it’s spectacular. I think they should get a medal for doing that,” Veeck said by phone. “Taking a night that there are not as many people and attempting to build it up is good marketing, and doing something that is good for the fans is even better marketing.”

For every Tuesday home game in June, July and August, the Cougars offer fans to do as their brethren during the George H.W. Bush administration did.

Box seats cost $5, reserved seats are $4 and it’s $3 to sit on the lawn.

Bill Larsen, the Cougars’ first general manager who now lives in Florida, mulling his next baseball move, remembers the simple formula that produced those prices.

“There was no research, period,” Larsen laughed by phone. “I think we just arrived at everything. Looking back, it was so fast and you had to make decisions so fast it really wasn’t on the radar as far as, ‘OK, let’s do some research,’ like people do anymore. … I imagine it would have helped, but in a way, I’m glad it didn’t because we really were breaking ground. Being the first minor league team in a major league market was significant enough.”

A walk around the concourse Tuesday revealed fans clad in paraphernalia of both the Cubs and White Sox. Another spectator sported a jersey T-shirt of Carlos Correa, the Houston Astros shortstop who once played for the Cougars’ opposing team, Quad Cities, an Astros farm club.

Therein lie two cross-sections of the longstanding clientele at Cougars games: Fans relishing the affordability of a baseball night out and hardcore minor league disciples.

“When I first came here, my daughter was still little, and it was a great place to come, sit on the grass and just spend time together, get her used to baseball,” said Kulat, a preschool teacher. “Since then, I just like minor league ball. It’s just fun to watch.

I’ve been to 10 of the teams that [the Cougars] play and been to their home stadiums and just enjoyed the heck out of it.”

Cougars general manager Curtis Haug called the “Throwback Tuesday” promotion a brainchild of the organization’s annual October planning meetings.

Non-throwback tickets cost $14 (box), $12 (reserved) and $10 (lawn), with senior rates available in each area for half the price. The club’s newly unveiled Strike Zone Premier seats, swivel chairs behind home plate that offer wait service, cost $69 on nonfireworks nights and $89 on fireworks nights.

Burlington Central’s Josie Kurosky and the St. Charles North duo of Kate Lillie and Gianna Furrie made the cut for the 16-member Chick Evans Junior Amateur match play tournament after two rounds of stroke play.

Aurora Christian’s Devin Johnson, from Geneva, made the cut for the boys. players Tuesday was the speed of the greens. Lillie said the greens were faster than Monday, but the additional speed worked to her advantage.

“I think they were definitely a little bit faster,” Lillie said. “I like faster greens, so I think that helped me a lot, but I do think they were a bit faster.”

Moreover, Furrie said it was important to stay in front of the hole to avoid being punished by the quick greens.

“Pretty much every hole you want to be below the hole because it’s a really, really fast putt,” Furrie said.

Kurosky said she didn’t have a lot of trouble with the greens Tuesday, but said her putting could’ve been better.

“I didn’t think they were very quick,” Kurosky said, “But I did not put very well.

(My) putting and chipping were not very good at all.”

On the other hand, two areas of Kurosky’s game she said she did well in were her accuracy off the tee and her approach shots.

“I made 10 greens in regulation today and 14 [Monday], which was awesome,” Kurosky said.

Kurosky, Lillie and Furrie will return Wednesday to Itasca Country Club for match play. The pairings for match play were released later Tuesday.

In the boys competition, Geneva resident Devin Johnson, an Aurora Christian junior, shot a 4-over 148 to tie for eighth among individuals and advance to the 32-member match play tournament.

ITASCA – After two rounds of play at Itasca Country Club, Burlington Central senior girls golfer Josie Kurosky is among the top players in the 35th annual IJGA Chick Evans Junior Amateur.

Kurosky entered the second round of the girls competition tied for first place at 2-over par. She struggled Tuesday, shooting a 9-over 81, but qualified for the match play tournament with a fifth-place finish.

“I’m happy with how I finished,” Kurosky said. “[Monday] was my personal best score (with a 74) and I’m really happy with that.”

Two more Kane County Chronicle-area girls who qualified for match play are St. Charles North juniors Kate Lillie and Gianna Furrie. Lillie shot a 6-over 78 to finish tied for sixth place, while Furrie, who is working her way back from an elbow injury, bounced back after a rough first round to tie for 13th place. Her 3-over 75 was tied for the second-best score of the day.

“I think I had a better game plan today,” Lillie said. “I was really sticking to each hole as being a new start and really just focusing on the shot that I had to hit.”

“I was definitely a little disappointed with [Monday],” Furrie said. “But this is only my third tournament since I’ve been back from my elbow injury, so I guess I can’t really be that upset.”

The course’s narrow fairways caused trouble for many golfers Monday. Lillie said one of her methods of adjustment was making sure she chose the right club before making her shot.

“It was really evaluating if I needed to take driver on some holes,” Lillie said. “Some holes are short enough where I could just hit a wood. … A couple of the holes I changed to hitting a 5-wood in order to have a better opportunity to get on the green.”

Jakaitis finds ‘perfect fit’ in Loyola Maryland

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Claire Jakaitis built her stock as a women’s basketball recruit behind budding versatility.

The St. Charles North senior only developed a onetrack mind Monday, when she verbally committed to NCAA Division I Loyola University Maryland.

Weighing offers from other East Coast programs including Long Island, Massachusetts and Massachusetts-Lowell, Jakaitis, a 6-foot-2 post, realized Loyola’s Baltimore campus was the place to be.

“I decided it was going to be a perfect fit both athletically and academically,” Jakaitis said. “It’s a beautiful place, so I decided to do it right now and not wait anymore. … Eventually, the right school did come, and I kind of jumped on it.”

Jakaitis is accustomed to showing urgency lately. A Montini transfer who grew up

in District 303 schools, she averaged 13.8 points and 6.8 rebounds a game for the North Stars in 2014-15, ranking second and third, respectively, on the team.

The North Stars challenged their Tri-Cities brethren in a competitive Upstate Eight Conference River Division race, in part, thanks to the depth Jakaitis Claire Jakaitis brought to the rotation.

North Stars coach Sean Masoncup found Jakaitis’ recruiting “really heated up” during the summer. In addition to helping North’s cause at the Dundee-Crown Summer League, she continued her emergence for Midwest Elite in AAU play.

No matter the setting, Jakaitis proved equally comfortable whether she put the ball on the floor and drove to the basket or took aim from long range.

“That’ll be pretty special for our program and for our basketball family,” Masoncup said. “We’re very proud of her, and we hope this is just the start to a great year.”

Jakaitis was starting to garner interest from a few other programs closer to home – including Loyola Chicago and Illinois-Chicago – as well as the Ivy League.

She’s interested in a career as a chiropractor and lauded Loyola Maryland’s pre-health program.

“Playing at North and being able to have really great teammates who have pushed me and stretched me to do other things is really great. And then playing at Midwest Elite and playing with some really great girls prepared me,” Jakaitis said. “And there also have been great coaches to push me and help me realize the kind of player I can be.

“It’s been a long process and a lot of work, and it’s good to see that it’s paid off and that dreams are coming true.”

McKay ‘very serious’ about improving stock

By NATE WENDT nwendt@shawmedia.com With the Sycamore Speedway season well underway, the stakes are getting higher as Cory McKay of St. Charles is separated from third place in the Sycamore Speedway Late Models standings by just a few points.

Every weekend, drivers race in one of the multiple divisions the speedway in Maple Park offers. The late model division McKay is in is usually comprised of cars that have been recently modeled or manufactured.

McKay has been going against that trend, as he races in his 1977 Chevrolet Caprice, when other racers mostly drive newer Monte Carlos.

McKay’s preference lies in the Caprice’s shape and

uniqueness.

“I always wanted to build a Caprice,” McKay said. “I like the body style and having something that’s a little bit different.”

The DeKalb County Championships on Saturday will be one of the feature races where all classes of race cars may participate. The race Cory McKay is 30 laps to the finish, which McKay enjoys more.

“I think that the longer events are better,” McKay said. “You have more time to get things done and be patient.”

McKay is optimistic about his season, even though it has been riddled with some me-

chanical trouble.

“It’s been a pretty good season, though there have been a lot of mechanical errors,” McKay said. “We had some rear-end issues and a motor issue that we fixed. Hopefully, there won’t be anymore.”

When McKay isn’t racing, he spends most of his time either working on his car or working at Meijer.

When McKay is racing, you can count on fellow St. Charles East alumni Tim Ludke being in the race.

Ludke has known McKay since 2007 when they first began racing together.

Ludke holds McKay in high regard as both a racer and a person.

“He’s very serious about his racing,” Ludke said. “He’s a clean racer who won’t crash someone out to win.”

Just before Carbonell’s homer, leadoff hitter John DelloStritto was at the plate with runners on second and third and one out. Asquini called a suicide squeeze, as both runners took off and DelloStritto got the bunt down.

After Wildcats’ pitcher Ryan Cote realized he had no shot at the runner coming home, he fired to first. But pinch runner Joe Sciarrino, who started on second base, never stopped running.

Sciarrino slid safely at home to give DelloStritto two RBIs after bunting the ball less than two feet.

“We were fortunate to score two runs on that play,” Asquini said with a smile.

“That gave us the lead, and Monty followed with a the home run which was awesome and then we just kind of extended from there. We did a nice job taking advantage of their mistakes.”

Libertyville tacked on a

run in each of the next two innings to draw to within four, at 10-6, but East put up another seven-spot in the top of the sixth to crush any hopes of a Wildcats comeback.

Carbonell delivered the big blow in the inning with a two-run single, and Aiden Wright’s bunt with runners on first and second was thrown down the left-field line, allowing two more runs to score, the rout was on.

The 17 runs made up for the loss to Benet, which spoiled a strong start by Matt Breidigan. The Saints senior right-hander saw the first batter of his outing reach on an error and the next pitch was hit over the fence for a tworun home run for the game’s only scoring.

Breidigan went all six innings, striking out six and throwing just 76 pitches.

Steve Abruzzo came on in relief to pick up the win against Libertyville, which meant Asquini got to give one of his go-to arms, Steve Podany, an extra day of rest.

The Saints (29-8) will send Podany to the mound today against Lincoln-Way North in a semifinal at 7:30 p.m. The other semifinal features Benet and Marist at 5 p.m.

The winners will play for the championship at 7 p.m.

Thursday, with each remaining game at Benedictine.

Woman with Type 2 diabetes can have healthy pregnancy Dear Doctor K: I have Type 2 diabetes, and I would like to get pregnant. What can I do to increase my chances of having a healthy baby?

Dear Reader: Like you, some women already have either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes before they become pregnant. There also is a kind of temporary diabetes that develops during pregnancy called gestational diabetes. It goes away after the baby is born.

You’re right to be concerned.

Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes all cause high blood sugar and can cause pregnancy complications. But for this column, I’ll focus on pregnancy and Type 2 diabetes.

Consistently higher-than-normal blood sugar during pregnancy puts your baby’s health at risk. It increases the chances of having a miscarriage or going into premature labor. It may also cause your growing baby’s organs to form abnormally. Women with diabetes are also more likely to have large babies. This can make delivery difficult, and cesarean sections more likely.

So, keeping blood sugar under control early in pregnancy is crucial to your baby’s health.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff In fact, it is also important to achieve good blood sugar control before you become pregnant. That means keeping your HbA1c levels less than 7 percent. (HbA1c levels indicate your average blood sugar over the past three months.)

Many women with Type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese.

Try to lose weight by eating fewer calories and exercising regularly if you are trying to become pregnant. This should help reduce your blood sugar levels before and even during the pregnancy.

If lifestyle changes aren’t enough to drop or keep your blood sugar levels in a healthy range, you may need to begin medication. If you’re already taking a medicine, you may need to increase the dose or switch the kind.

Unfortunately, studies have not yet shown whether it is safe to take oral diabetes medications during pregnancy. Your doctor may recommend two pills that appear to be safe: metformin or

acarbose. Alternatively, doctors often recommend starting or switching to insulin. This is an injectable hormone that lowers blood sugar.

Your diet during pregnancy is different from your diet before pregnancy because you’re eating for two. That means taking in enough calories for the two of you, and also eating the types of food that are healthiest for both you and the baby.

For that reason, you will likely work with a dietitian during your pregnancy. He or she will adjust your diet to ensure that your baby receives proper nutrition, but that you do not consume too many calories. Finally, you will have more frequent HbA1c tests during pregnancy. And you will have more frequent ultrasound tests to monitor your baby’s growth and development.

With good prenatal care and by keeping your blood sugar under control, you can look forward to a safe pregnancy and a healthy baby.

I’ve tried beer once and I didn’t like the taste.

I know a lot of teens drink because a lot of my friends do, but I’m not sure why they drink other than to act “mature.”

Why do you think teens drink? – Taylor, Reno, Nevada Dear Taylor: Many teens start drinking purely out of peer pressure.

Unfortunately, once they get started, some of them find other reasons to keep on drinking – the same reasons adults have. Two of the most prominent are to escape their problems and to fortify their courage.

The difficulties of teen life can be overpowering, and some teens turn to alcohol when they don’t know what else to do.

Many teens who drink feel that alcohol will help them forget the loneliness they feel. Those who look for courage in a bottle haven’t learned that this quality comes from the heart. Alcohol, a depressant, only compounds a person’s problems.

Too many teens become addicted to it before they discover this fact.

Dr. Wallace: Thanks for your column about alcoholism. The majority of alcoholics never understand the disease, and not many alcoholics know there are ways to live normal, productive and happy lives.

Thousands of caring people dedicate their lives to assisting alcoholics. When one wonders how to survive this madness, it’s important to know that helpful folks are available, eager to give a hand. Do not suffer alone.

I am 60 and have been an alcoholic since my teen years, but I have

However, as you pointed out, I am not cured. My recovery path has been through a treatment center and extensive Alcoholics Anonymous activity, but there are other paths available.

When you are a bridge defender, you hope to get declarer under your control. Then you will probably be able to defeat the contract. Sometimes, it must be admitted, it will be more important to get partner under control, either by signaling clearly or by getting on play to make the lethal lead.

Which applies in today’s deal?

South is in three no-trump, and West leads the club jack.

North, knowing of a combined 25-28 points, was right to raise to three no-trump.

West’s opening lead marks South with the club queen. So, if East takes the first trick with his club ace and returns the suit, declarer will take at least nine tricks: one club, six diamonds and two spades. If South needs the spade finesse, East knows it will succeed.

The defenders must win the first five tricks. And the only way to do that is with one club and four hearts. But to which heart should East shift at trick two?

If East leads a low heart and South plays low, the contract makes. Instead, East should switch to his heart jack. This is called a surrounding play because East has dummy’s top heart, the 10, surrounded by his jack and nine, and he has another, higher, nontouching heart honor in the king.

Then South has no answer; he must lose those five tricks.
