Drivers urged to avoid part of Randall Road KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A project to remove railroad tracks from Randall Road is underway, and the Kane County Division of Transportation is urging drivers to consider avoiding the stretch of road.

Randall Road, between Dean Street and Route 64 in St. Charles, will be affected for a two-week period that started Monday.

Man accused in fatal crash released Police: Geneva resident drove car into quarry

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com A Geneva man who was charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless homicide after a crash that killed two people was released Monday from DuPage County Jail after posting 10 percent of his $250,000 bail.

Michael Szot, 21, of Geneva has been charged with four counts of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol causing the death of another person and two counts of reckless homicide.

Michael Szot Prosecutors had requested that bail be set at $3 million.

Police and firefighters responded at about 1:59 a.m.

Saturday to the intersection of Aurora Avenue and Eagle Street for a report of a vehicle that had driven into a Naperville Park District quarry.

Szot admitted to police that he had been smoking marijuana earlier that day, and that he and his passengers had been drinking rum shots and beer at a local bar before the crash, prosecutors said during Sunday’s bail hearing in front of DuPage County Judge Timothy McJoynt.

Prosecutors said a marijuana pipe had been found in Szot’s pocket. Szot’s blood-alcohol level was 0.142, above the legal limit of 0.08.

Szot’s next court appearance is set for Aug. 11 for arraignment in front of Judge Kathryn Creswell.

If found guilty of the charges, Szot faces a maximum penalty of up to 28 years in prison.

Two flower bouquets were left along a repaired fence near Eagle Street and Aurora Avenue in Naperville, where a car left the road Saturday, crashed through the fence and landed in a water-filled quarry, killing two of the men in the car. The driver of the car, Michael Szot of Geneva, survived the crash and was charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless homicide.

21, of Lisle and Sajaad Safiullah Syed, 21, of Naperville – were unable to escape from the 2007 Chevy Impala that Szot was driving. They were located by fire and police divers in the car, which was 50 feet under water, and were taken to Edward Hospital in Naperville, where they were pronounced dead.

Szot and Boddupalli both attended Northwestern University in Evanston and were friends, said Szot’s attorney, Jeff Fawell.

“It is a tragedy,” Fawell said. Szot’s parents also were at the bail hearing.

“They are in deep despair,” Fawell said. “They wish to express their sympathies to the

families of Boddupalli and Syed.”

Szot graduated from Geneva High School in 2011. When he was a student at Geneva High School, Szot was co-president of the group GHS Students Against Destructive Decisions, his parents said Sunday.

Before the incident, Szot had never received even a traffic ticket, Fawell said.

“He has never been arrested,” Fawell said, in pushing for bail to be set at $100,000.

Fawell said he was not knowledgeable about what prosecutors said took place before the crash.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicates that Szot was driving west on Au-

rora Avenue and left the roadway at Eagle Street, crashing into several trees and landing in the quarry on the northwest corner of the intersection.

Szot was able to escape from the vehicle and swim to safety, police said. He was taken to Ed-

ward Hospital, where he was treated and released.

T. CHARLES – After four decades and a few job titles, the Rev. David Peck is once again back in the community where he grew up.

Peck, who turned 58 on Sunday, this month completed his first full year as pastor

yet summoned Peck on a call, but he is ready to assist at an emergency day or night. Peck first took firefighter courses when he was a fire chaplain from 2000 to 2009 in Rochelle, where he served as pastor of that city’s St. Patrick Parish.

To have someone with his background willing to do this for the department is a tremendous asset, said David Kintz, a St. Charles deputy police chief. The St. Charles police and fire departments have each gone without a chaplain in the past few years, with the fire department having been without

“I think that gives him an upper hand over other chaplains,” Veseling said. “He’s had the training, it gives him the creditability.”

Peck admits that he is an adrenaline junkie and is not afraid of fires. He believes that what he is doing with all his skills is his gift back to God. “I was drawn by God to the priesthood,” Peck said. “I really believe that that’s what I was always meant to be, but I shied away from it.”

Peck first changed course when he moved to New York and attended law school for two years while working at various firms. Then he moved to the business world, working in mergers and acquisitions.

Even though Peck built up his professional career, he said he did not have a sense of peace and fulfillment.

D-304 OKs tentative $100 million budget

Hatcher looking for more ‘Foxy Readers’

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva District 304 school board Monday unanimously approved a tentative 2014-15 budget of more than $100 million in expenditures, $95.5 million in revenue, and a shortfall of nearly $5 million.

This represents an increase in expenditures by $8 million over last year’s budget of $92 million and an increase in revenue of nearly $2.5 million, records show.

The deficit spending is purposeful because the district is spending down its reserves to pay down its debt, officials said.

“This has been quite an effort this year to make sure we are getting it right,” board president Mark Grosso said.

“We are being as accurate as we can. You are going to see … some deficit spending by design in here,” Grosso said. “We

are actually spending down some of the reserve money we have that allowed us to levy less in the last year. It works out better for our taxpayers.”

Officials said the district is spending down fund balances in its operations and maintenance fund to pay for capital projects and technology infrastructure and the municipal retirement fund, which will more accurately reflect each year’s actual needs, officials said in a statement.

Expenditures include program expansion, such as all-day kindergarten at six elementary schools, the introduction of a one-to-one technology program for all fifth graders and a curriculum program that combines science, technology, engineering and math at the middle schools and high schools, officials said.

Assistant Superintendent for Business Services Donna Oberg said over the last few

years, the district’s debt payments have increased substantially, from $14 million to $18 million this year.

Oberg said the district purposely levied $3 million less than needed for the debt service, intending to use abatement dollars from the education fund to make bond payments.

The tentative budget is a breakdown of anticipated revenues and expenditures for the next fiscal year, which began July 1, officials said.

The tentative budget will be on display for public inspection at the Coultrap Educational Services Center, 227 N. Fourth St. Public inspection will be available through Aug. 25, when the proposed plan will be the subject of a public hearing at 7 p.m. at Williamsburg Elementary School, 1812 Williamsburg Ave., and then is expected to have final board approval.

North Aurora approves new rules for medical marijuana

The rules are in reaction to the state’s Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act, which became law on Jan. 1. Patients with a variety of illnesses could apply for medical pot by next spring.

Under the rules village trustees approved, dispensing

centers would be allowed to locate in business, office and industrial districts as a permitted use, while cultivation centers would only be allowed in industrial districts. The medical marijuana pilot program is for four years.

The Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act authorizes municipalities to enact reasonable regulations covering medical marijuana cultivation and dispensing centers, said Mike Toth, the village’s economic and community development director.

The week’s mild weather had to have helped. Last year, Breon said, Saturday was “very, very hot,” and attractions had to close because of a strong storm. Meanwhile, he said, this year was “one of those years you dream about but don’t see very often.”

As bidding on poultry neared, Fantastics 4-H member Madison Solomon of St. Charles stood in the poultry barn near her caged chickens, which were next to three up for auction. The 12-year-old said she also had photography, cooking and visual arts entries on exhibition.

“It’s just fun to be able to show off some of the things I’ve done in the past year,” she said.

In another part of the fairgrounds, Sandwich resident Stacy Kuntz waved as her husband and 4½-year-old daughter rode one of the many rides, a roller coaster named Wacky Worm.

Kuntz said she and her husband surprised their daughter with the trip.

“She’s having so much fun,” she said.

She was united in marriage to Emil J. Bartholet in 1972, and they made their home in Leonia, New Jersey. In 1982, they came to St. Charles and raised their family. She was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in December 1983. Rita enjoyed knitting, gardening, long nature walks and European vacations, and had a great joy caring for her cats.

She is survived by six children, Marie-Louise (William) Keiser of Cham, Switzerland, Rita (Pius) Gisler of Menzingen, Switzerland, Susanne Obert of Stans, Switzerland, Emil C. Bartholet of St. Charles, Marie-Jeanne (Lance) Forbes of Ashburn, Virginia and Philip J. Bartholet of Elburn; and her grandchildren, niece and nephew.

ST. CHARLES – Members of the St. Charles City Council on Monday were not interested in revisiting the topic of video gambling in St. Charles, even on a limited basis.

During the public comment portion of the council’s regular meeting, Donald Ramsell, attorney for the St. Charles Moose Lodge, asked the council to consider allowing video gaming that would be limited to veterans and service groups in St. Charles.

None of the aldermen at the council’s regular meeting wanted to make a motion directing city staff to bring research on limited video gaming to a City Council committee. St. Charles Mayor Ray

Rogina asked for the motion after Ward 2 Alderman Rita Payleitner and Ward 4 Alderman Jim Martin voiced their opposition to the discussion.

Ramsell said the organization was disappointed that the City Council was unwilling to support veterans and charitable organizations.

“The Moose has been here for 101 years providing services and to the extent that we can continue to do so, we [would] like their support,” Ramsell said after the meeting. “But apparently they’re already flush with enough cash that they don’t need us.”

Ramsell cited Evergreen Park and New Lenox as two Illinois municipalities that have enacted ordinances allowing limited video gaming.

Nearly 4.5K meals packed at event

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Northern Illinois Food Bank’s mission of feeding the hungry does not take a summer break.

The food bank received some help in that mission Saturday when teams representing local companies, community organizations, church groups and families competed to pack the most food and raise the most money for the food bank. During the food bank’s inaugural “Pack and Give Back” event, about 80 people helped pack bags with meals that the food bank will distribute at nine back-to-school fairs

in August.

“It’s an event to raise awareness about hunger and help feed our hungry neighbors,” said Erik Jacobsen, communications manager for the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Last year, the Northern Illinois Food Bank distributed 42 million meals to those in need through its network of food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and youth and senior centers.

The food bank serves 13 counties, including Kane County.

In a span of about two hours, teams packed 4,452 meals. Corey Williams, an employee at the Mercedes Benz dealership in Carol Stream, was a member of the team that packed the most meals: 1,086.

Employees from Exelon also were part of his team.

“The fact that we are helping some less-fortunate families, it is an honor,” Williams said.

Mike Hall, casino shift manager at Hollywood Casino in Aurora, also was happy to lend a hand.

“We’re all excited to be here to help out,” he said. “It was a fun way to get together. I had a good time.”

Hollywood Casino volunteers at Northern Illinois Food Bank two to three times a year, said Melonie Johnson, vice president of finance for Hollywood Casino in Aurora.

“It is a team-building event for us, as well as donating back to the community,” Johnson said.

District 303 seeks dismissal of teen’s bullying lawsuit

CHARLES – St. Charles School District 303 is asking a judge to dismiss a lawsuit in which a graduate claims the district – along with its school board, six drill team coaches, two athletic directors and two principals – did nothing to stop ongoing bullying and harassment against her.

Daniella Kapusta, who attended St. Charles East High School from fall 2009 to spring 2013, claims in the lawsuit that her teammates on the district drill team called her derogatory names, spread false rumors about her and, among other actions, ostracized her.

The suit alleges the defendants failed to protect her from verbal and physical bullying by

her teammates.

Court documents filed on behalf of the defendants assert the claims should be dismissed.

“The Tort Immunity Act cloaks school districts and their employees with absolute immunity from liability when responding to and handling complaints of bullying in the schools,” according to a motion filed last month. “As such, the tort claims are barred and should be dismissed.”

In further support of dismissal, the motion states, Kapusta failed to state a cause of action for her claims of willful and wanton conduct and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

A hearing on the motion to dismiss is set for 9:30 a.m. Sept.

Elgin man killed when tractor flips onto him KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA TOWNSHIP – An Elgin man died in unincorporated Geneva Township on Sunday after he became trapped under a tractor, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 32W600 block of Fabyan Parkway, where they learned Joel Bork, 47, was operating a light-weight front-loaded tractor on his family farm and got trapped beneath the machinery when it flipped, police said.

Police said it is unknown why the tractor flipped over.

Bork reportedly was alone at the time of the incident.

Relatives began looking for him when he hadn’t been seen in a few hours, police said, noting they were the ones who called 911.

Bork, of the 1400 block of Getzelman Road, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Take the cool out of Kools THE WASHINGTON POST To buy cigarettes in Australia, you have to pick up a dull green package plastered with photos of a shriveled infant, a blackened lung or an old man with a tracheotomy hole in his throat. You also need to look closely because the only difference among brands is the name in a small, prescribed font on the bottom quarter of the pack. This arrangement, implemented in 2012, made Australia the first nation both to require graphic images and ban enticing logos on cigarette packs.

On Thursday, Australian officials announced that the nation’s smoking rate fell 15 percent in the past three years – from 15.1 percent of people older than 14 in 2010 to 12.8 percent in 2013. “This means the daily smoking rate has halved since 1991,” said Geoff Neideck, a health spokesperson. By comparison, the United States took nearly a half-century to do the same.

Australia’s path toward the plain-packaging law wasn’t smooth. A long public debate preceded passage of the measure. Philip Morris and other tobacco companies then challenged it in court and before a United Nations tribunal, and they covered some legal fees for several countries to dispute it at the World Trade Organization. The government won the domestic lawsuit, but the other two cases still are pending.

Tobacco researchers say the drop in the smoking rate shows that plain-packaging laws – as well as the 25 percent tax increase Australia instituted in 2010 – work. These packs help “de-normalize” smoking, disassociating it from hipness and

associating it with smoking’s health consequences.

Perhaps the fact that cigarette manufacturers are filing lawsuits is evidence enough of the laws’ impact – and a sign that the United States should be following in Australia’s footsteps.

At least 65 countries have finalized their graphic warnings, but the United States still uses its 1984 “Surgeon General’s Warning,” small text posted on the side of cigarette packs.

In 2009, Congress ordered the Food and Drug Administration to move to graphic warnings.

But a federal appeals court threw out the FDA’s resulting rule on the grounds that it violated companies’ commercial speech rights. The FDA is undertaking research in the process of proposing new graphic images.

The United States has lowered its smoking rate to below 20 percent, because of measures including higher cigarette taxes, nonsmoking environments and bans on cigarette advertising. Some states are doing more – New Jersey, for example, is considering raising the smoking age to 21. But 42 million Americans still smoke, and stronger labels are an essential component of a more comprehensive response.

A plain-packaging law might not be realistic for the United States today. But protecting commercial speech should not mean inhibiting consumers from understanding the true effects of smoking. The tobacco companies should stop their international campaign against measures that protect public health, and the FDA should take critical next steps in reducing the appeal of smoking.

Rich Harvest Farms caddy three strokes off lead

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ITASCA – Recent Kaneland graduate Matt Yonkovich faces a decision between golfing at Waubonsee College or College of DuPage, a choice he knows he must make soon.

One matter delaying Yonkovich kept him occupied for a few more hours Monday morning at Itasca Country Club.

“My life’s golf right now,” Yonkovich said. “That’s what my summer’s been. It’s been great.”

Apart from caddying at Rich Harvest Farms in his hometown of Sugar Grove, Yonkovich plays wherever and whenever he can find a tee time. He planned another 18 holes Monday afternoon at Hughes Creek in Elburn, aiming to eclipse the 1-over-par 73 he carded in the opening round of the IJGA Chick Evans Junior Amateur here.

Yonkovich’s short game helped him to three birdies in the first nine holes and a steady round overall. His score, three strokes behind leader Kevin McEneany of Lemont, puts him in sound position to make the top-32 match play tournament cut after 18 more holes of stroke play today.

“My putter, it’s always been my favorite club in the bag,” Yonkovich said, “and continues to pull through. …

I don’t know. It’s my favorite part of the game, and I like to practice it a lot. I think that’s why I’ve been doing so good.”

Putting certainly pushed Burlington Central sophomore Joe Sherman to a 76.

Although his round included zero birdies, Sherman rolled in numerous pars by following advice he gathered from a country club member during a practice round Saturday.

That tutelage: Stay below the hole if you want to be in position to score.

“I tried to put that into effect today, and it worked out really well,” Sherman said.

“So I got up and down a lot from the front, which was nice.

For Hoss, a funny thing happened on the way to each green.

Hoss has navigated through a swing hitch for the past few days. While it hasn’t been entirely debilitating – see his fourth-place tie in the Aurora City Tournament, which concluded over the weekend – it’s weighing on Hoss more than he knows he should allow.

His ball usually draws instead of fades. Now that it’s doing the opposite, adjustments are crucial.

“It’s tough to play a whole, 18[-hole] round of golf when you’re thinking about your swing, you know,” Hoss said.

“Sometimes you should probably go play that swing. I was thinking about it here and there.”

While their Day 1 scores won’t reset today, players still embrace the chance at a new round with plenty of possibilities.

In addition to topping his first score, Hoss will keep an eye on how Yonkovich fares.

Hoss also caddies at Rich Harvest Farms, and although he hasn’t spoken with Yonkovich through the years, he recognizes their mutual hometown and respects him.

“He’s always kind of a nice guy to compete with, because he’s always putting scores low,” Hoss said. “So you always want to beat the guys around your area. I don’t really know him, but it’s kind of a good rivalry. I don’t know if he sees my score, but I see his.”

Both teams threatened in the first two innings, but couldn’t score a run until Alex Santana bunted Jesmuel Valentin to third base setting up an RBI double for Curletta for Great Lakes (14-15 second half, 48-52 overall) in the third inning.

Zachary Bird started the ballgame with a 4-11 record and a three-game losing streak.

After Bird kept the Cougars (19-11, 64-36) scoreless through the first four innings, Jeimer Candelario tied the game with two outs in the fifth by send-

ing a solo home run over the right-center wall to knock Bird out of the ballgame.

The tie was short-lived as Curletta found another opportunity to give the Loons the lead in the bottom of the inning. With Santana at first, Curletta drilled a 1-0 pitch from Daury Torrez (9-5) over the left-field wall to put Great Lakes ahead 3-1.

That is all the scoring the Loons would need as their bullpen pitched with four straight scoreless innings to end the ballgame.

The Cougars now enjoy an off day today before beginning a stretch of games to end the 2014 season. On Wednesday the Cougars welcome in the South Bend Silver Hawks to start a stretch of 40 games in 41 days.

Wednesday’s game also begins a six-game home stand.

Midwest League playoff series often lack attendance befitting their games’ magnitude.

School’s back in session, for one, and some games overlap with prep football Friday nights.

With none of those outliers present this weekend, the Cougars will host West Michigan for three games beginning Saturday. Both teams won their respective divisions in the first half, so consider this an especially inviting potential postseason preview.

“We’re really looking forward to playing Kane County, to going up against them,” Whitecaps manager Andrew Graham said. “You know, their pitching and our pitching is pretty similar, as we’ve been jockeying back for first and second in the last month. So, it’s good we get to play them.”

Entering Monday, the Cougars led the Whitecaps by one game in the second-half standings and five games for the best overall record in the 16-team Midwest League.

That made relocating the “Trickey-Wright QB/Receiver Camp” to St. Charles an attractive proposition to Wright, who went on to play quarterback collegiately at Wisconsin and for the NFL’s Green Bay Packers after starring at St. Charles High.

Wright, whose mother plus a brother and a sister still reside in St. Charles, shifted the west suburban location of the camp this summer from Wheaton Warrenville South to St. Charles North. The two-day camp began Saturday afternoon at North.

“I went to high school in Texas as a freshman and in Boston as a sophomore, so this was the only place I went for two years, and I felt because of the moving around, this was really more home to me,” said Wright, a 1979 St. Charles High graduate. “The high school friends I met in St. Charles are still dear friends I have to this day so that acceptance for a junior coming in … the friends and teammates and kids I had here were fabulous.”

“It’s to show what we learned from camp and display it somewhere,” he said. “It’s a real good exercise for us.”

Geneva, Burlington Central, Wheaton Academy and host ACC were among the 20 football

teams taking part in the 7-on-7 contest.

Points of emphasis during the offseason for Geneva have been conditioning, speed and footwork, and coach Rob Wicinski knows how important those aspects are to a winning football program.

“We can’t go anywhere unless we compete,” Wicinski said. “I’m really pleased with their effort and that they’re out there competing. The Xs and Os and getting guys in position, that’ll all come with time. It’s

a process, and we’re looking to compete and have fun out here.”

Geneva is coming into the new season looking to evolve even more as an offense despite averaging more than 35 points a game last season. With Northern Illinois recruit quarterback Daniel Santacaterina and wideout Pace Temple leading the charge, Geneva is poised for another successful season.

“Santa is a good boy, and he’s here all the time,” Wicinski said. “He has a nice ability to read the defense and execute.

My wideouts have been very crisp on their routes, and that’s part of the process with making sure our concepts are correct.”

With a second conditioning camp coming up next week, Geneva will be looking to build upon its 4-0-1 showing at the tournament.

“If I stay out of the way, we should be OK,” Wicinski joked.

At Burlington Central, coach Rich Crabel hopes to hammer home the value of full effort after his Rockets went 3-2.

“It’s just a matter of see-

ing who wants to run,” Crabel said. “We’re not running [hard enough], so our biggest thing is effort and being where you’re supposed to be.”

After completing an up-anddown 2013 in which Central finished 4-5, the summer serves as an opportunity to get stronger and learn coverage assignments.

“Last year, I thought we finished up pretty strongly, so we need to carry that over into this season, and fix the little things from now until August,” Crabel said.

“When we were kids, we used to say we couldn’t wait to play in the city tournament and get after the adults,” Spring said.

Being so familiar with the course, Spring thinks it “sets up really well for a match play tournament.” But Spring won’t take his comfort level of the course for granted, as he plans to drive a few balls after work during the week.

Elsewhere Sunday, in a bit of an upset, two-time defending champion Matt Daly fell at the hands of Dave Chappell after Chappell prevailed with a 6 and 5 victory.

With Daly finished, Chappell will have to turn his attention to next weekend’s match against Mike Muehling, who defeated Keith Petri in an extra-hole playoff.

“I didn’t really have real bad shots. I think everything was working pretty well,” Muehling said. “I wasn’t striking the ball real good the first nine, but came back the second nine. My putting was decent in the front nine, and that’s what kept me in it.”

After observing Chappell this weekend, Muehling noticed he didn’t make many mistakes, so he expects a strong showing from Chappell.

“I will have to have my best game next week to have any sort of a chance,” Muehling said.

ST. CHARLES – Don’t tell Randy Spring that taking some time off from the St. Charles Men’s Tournament at Pottawatomie Golf Course was a bad thing.

Despite having not played in the tournament since 1985, Spring finds himself in a good spot after defeating Dan Pessetti in a 5 and 4 match Sunday, setting up a showdown with six-time winner Rich Balla in the semifinals next weekend.

Spring started fast and Pessetti couldn’t close the gap.

“Today, I hit my irons really well, and I made some putts. I got ahead and didn’t make any mistakes, so [Pessetti] couldn’t catch up,” Spring said.

Spring, of St. Charles, is a two-time champion of the tournament with titles in 1981 and 1985, and while he feels good about his placement, he knows there’s still some golf to be played.

“We have two more matches next weekend, and I’m playing Rich Balla, whom I’ve known for a long time, so it should be a good match,” Spring said.

Like many of the competitors, Spring has been golfing at Pottawatomie since childhood.

Shooting sensation transferring from W. Academy

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com A difficult offseason for the Wheaton Academy boys basketball program just became rockier.

Senior guard Josh Ruggles – one of the country’s most highly regarded high school 3-point shooters – announced Monday he will transfer from Wheaton Academy to Wheaton Warrenville South. His younger brother, sophomore guard Jake Ruggles, also will transfer to Wheaton South.

“It’s just something we felt we had to do,” Josh Ruggles said. “It’s not really a basketball decision. We just weren’t really happy there, and with it being a private school and having to pay to go there, it just wasn’t worth it anymore for us.”

The move comes after another set of basketball-playing brothers – 6-foot-10 senior Chandler Fuzak and 6-7 junior Bennett Fuzak – decided earlier this summer to transfer from Wheaton Academy to Geneva.

family than it had been previously. From a basketball standpoint, Josh Ruggles acknowledged some of his former Wheaton Academy teammates moving on – either via graduation or transfer – plus the presence of several friends at Wheaton Warrenville South helped open his mind to the move.

Additionally, Mike Healy – who coached the boys’ older brother, Brandon, at Wheaton Warrenville South before Brandon Ruggles transferred to Wheaton Academy – is back as the Tigers’ basketball coach after stepping away for three years to focus on athletic director duties.

“When he came back into the position this past year, honestly, if he hadn’t left the coaching spot, we probably never would have looked that hard for other options for Josh, and Brandon certainly would have finished [at Wheaton Warrenville South],” Dave Ruggles said. “It’s a situation where we were not going to [make the move] because he’s there but it was certainly a feather in the cap of that option.”

from shooting guard to point guard. The 6-2 senior said he’s open to playing either spot wherever he ends up playing in college and simply wants to help Wheaton South however he can.

The state’s 2013 King of the Hill 3-point champion, Josh Ruggles made international waves last year by winning a 3-point contest against professional players in Spain, and he’s been invited back to defend his title this fall.

“It’s really hard to say no,” Josh Ruggles said. “Even if I lost, they can’t take away the win from last year. We’re not officially a ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ I’m not really thinking about that as much now.”

Josh Ruggles praised Wheaton Academy coach Pete Froedden for handling the news with class Monday and said he wishes Froedden and the Warriors success going forward. Those well-wishes were passed on through an extremely hoarse voice.

“I’d like to say it’s from great communication on defense this past weekend [during AAU play] but I have no idea why it’s going away,” Josh Ruggles said. “It’s just gone.”

Goebbert’s roots lead back to Hampshire pumpkin patch

By MIKE DEFABO mdefabo@shawmedia.com Terry Goebbert leafed through the pictures on her kitchen counter one at a time, until, finally, she found just the right shot.

“I think this one just tells the story,” she said, smiling.

She glanced at the photo, where her son Jake smiled back from a chilly October afternoon 25 years earlier.

Today he is a 26-year-old rookie with the San Diego Padres, preparing to play his first series at Wrigley Field, a ballpark just 45 miles from his home in Hampshire. But here, in this photo from 1989, he’s a 2-year-old standing in a pumpkin patch, clutching his first baseball bat.

“He was such an outdoors

kid,” Terry said. “He loved the farm so much. His two loves in life were the farm and baseball.”

The Goebberts have been growing vegetables on their family farms almost as long as Wrigley Field has been growing ivy on its walls.

Jake’s grandfather, Jim Goebbert, started farming in Arlington Heights before moving his family to South Barrington in the early 1970s.

Lloyd Goebbert continued the family tradition in 1985 when he moved his young family to Hampshire, where he grows corn, tomatoes, peppers, green beans and other summer vegetables on 600 acres of sprawling farmland.

After the harvest, the yard transforms into a fall destination, complete with a corn

maze, hay rides and a petting zoo. Visitors from around Chicago’s suburbs come to the Goebbert’s Pumpkin Patch to pick their own pumpkins and enjoy a genuine outdoor farming experience, something Jake had every day.

The farm was Jake’s passion. Looking back at the photo, Terry points to his other: the baseball bat. Lloyd whittled a 2x4 to create his son’s first bat, and Jake carried it everywhere.

“He always had a bat in his hand,” Terry said. “Whatever he’d see, he’d try to hit. If it was a leaf on a tree or a rock on the ground, he’d always be hitting something.”

About the time the photo was taken, Terry thought it would be a good idea to set up

a batting tee in Jake’s playroom in the back of the house.

She placed a plastic wiffle ball on the tee and he smacked it squarely, sending it flying into the picture glass window in the front of the house.

It was clear that Jake had potential, even from a young age.

“That natural, classic left-handed swing,” Lloyd said.

Soon the playroom couldn’t contain Jake’s power and, in seventh grade, his parents put a batting cage in the barn across from their house. Even as temperatures dropped close to single digits in early spring, Jake spent hours in the brown, wooden building, honing his swing and studying Ted William’s book “The Science of Hitting”

like an instruction manual.

It took five years on the Astros’, Athletics’ and Padres’ farm teams to get to the big leagues. The coaching and the bus rides helped shaped Goebbert into the player he is today, but without a different kind of farm system – a much more literal one – he likely wouldn’t be where he is today.

After baseball, his parents aren’t sure where Goebbert will go. He may finish his psychology degree and find work in that field. Or he might come right back home and follow the path of his grandfather, father and brother have taken.

“I think he liked the atmosphere he grew up in enough to try to give that to his kids,” Lloyd said.

Artists often express political ideas in their work, and many years later, collectors have trouble understanding the politics. Kirkpatrick/Anna pottery worked from 1839 to 1896 in Illinois and made pottery jugs and other useful containers. But they also created some very strange jugs. Pottery pigs marked with railroad routes were made in the 1870s and 1880s to give to politicians, important owners or employees of the railroads. Those pigs sell today for about $12,000 up to a record price of $35,000. But mysterious “Temperance” jugs were decorated with three-dimensional figures that can be confusing to someone from the 21st century. One spectacular saltglazed jug, 10 1/4 inches high, was made with more than 18 applied designs representing the Civil War, slavery and the drinking of alcohol. There is a bust of a Union soldier with a goatee being bitten by a snapping turtle.

The rear end of a man in red pants “going in” probably is a reference to the evils of alcohol that “trap” him in the whiskey jug. One of the many snakes on the jug is eating a thin, bearded man. The head of a man, perhaps Abraham Lincoln, is shown near an eagle. The head of a black man and loose pottery chains represent slavery.

A man smoking a pipe and drinking from a mug, and a classical figure of a woman holding a lyre still are unidentified. The jug is well-marked, with the words “from Kirkpatrick Anna Pottery, Anna Union Co, Ills.” It may be the most amazing of all of the Anna Pottery message pieces, and it sold at a Crocker Farm auction in Sparks, Md., for $69,000 in March 2014.

Q: I have a hobo clown doll that has been in my family since at least the early 1950s. It is 18 inches tall, has a hard-plastic head and cloth body, and a hand crank on the back that produces a laughing sound when turned. The doll has a cloth tag that reads “Gund Mfg. Co., J. Swedlin Inc.” I have tried to learn more about it, and Gund says they have no record of this doll. Can you help?

By ROGER CATLIN The Washington Post BEVERLY HILLS, California – After years of sticking its logo on all manner of T-shirts, dolls, drinkware and accessories, the rock band Kiss has stamped it on an entire arena football team as well.

And the creation of the Los Angeles Kiss Arena Football League team did not go undocumented. So, a reality show about the effort, “4th and Loud,” premieres Aug. 12 on AMC. It wasn’t crass commercialism that motivated the fire-breathing band, though.

The band’s irrepressible Gene Simmons, he of the tongue and blood-spitting, says he was filling a civic need.

“Los Angeles is the No. 1 media city in America and it doesn’t have football?” he asked rhetorically in a Beverly Hills hotel restaurant where he was doing promotion for the reality show. “You’re kidding me. So, opportunity knocks, you answer the door and you give people bang for the buck.”

That bang includes, he says, the blasting brand of hard rock that put the still-active band on the map 40 years ago and more. “We have guys who rappel from the ceiling, we have extreme bikers, rock bands, pyrotechnics, girls in cages,” he says.

Looking somewhat more subdued out of his kabuki makeup, studded

codpiece and the seven-inch platform boots he wears on stage, Simmons, in a dark suit and sunglasses, with a red rose he plucked from a hotel lobby display, resembled at 64 a dour mob boss or wizened tribal chief, his scowling face framed by the jet black hair.

With band co-founder Paul Stanley, 62, adorned with a flowing scarf and an open shirt, the pair came to sell the TV critics’ press tour on the show, just as they sell their catalog of songs to audiences on stages worldwide.

“We wanted to create something that was very much keeping with Kiss,” says Stanley, who began his spiel with a vulgar joke that landed with a thud. “We want to envelop you and pummel you.”

The show-biz aspect is something natural to sports, Simmons says. “A long time ago, people figured out in boxing that it wasn’t just about the boxing; they put girls up there carrying the [round] numbers out there.

Who gets the biggest hand, the boxers or the girl carrying the number?”

Further, “A lot of the cheerleaders that teams have have become rather sexless,” Stanley says. “We wanted to have girls who were women.”

One might expect Kiss to go sleazy – into Lingerie Football League territory, perhaps – or even bigger, since Los Angeles does not have a National Football League team. But that would take years, if it happened at all, Simmons says.

Creating an AFL team was easier.

“Eight or nine months ago, there was no L.A. Kiss – that’s how fast it happened,” he says.

And from the beginning, reality-TV cameras were part of the proposition.

“Sure. It takes the same amount to make cents as it does dollars,” Simmons says. “So, if you’re going to do something, go big or go home.

We don’t do anything small. Whether it’s our shows, our licensing and merchandising, our restaurant chain, whatever it is, you got to do big.”

Simmons, of course, is a reality veteran who invited cameras into his home for seven seasons of “Gene Simmons Family Jewels,” amassing 156 episodes. “I Love Lucy,’ he notes dryly, “lasted 145.” (His statistics are wrong; it did more).

For Stanley, the 10-episode reality show seemed more of a nightmare.

“You either have reality or you have television, and you sacrifice reality to create reality television,” he says. “Life’s too short to assume a fake life in place of your real one.”

He calls “4th and Loud” more of a documentary. “The fact of the matter is, the show is not built around us,” he says. “You are going to meet some very, very interesting characters and stars in their own right that we want to come to the forefront.”

Main culprit in skin damage is exposure to sun Dear Doctor K: As I’ve entered my 40s, the skin on my hands and face has started to change. What happens to our skin as we age?

Dear Reader: The shortest answer is that our skin gets old, like the rest of us. In fact, the three layers of skin get old in different ways.

The skin’s outermost layer, the epidermis, forms a protective physical barrier. The dermis, or middle layer, contains collagen and elastin, which provide strength, firmness and elasticity.

It also contains blood vessels, immune cells, nerves and glands that produce sweat and oil. The deepest layer consists of connective tissue and fat. (I’ve put an illustration of these layers on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

As the years go by, skin undergoes a number of changes.

Epidermal cells don’t slough off as easily. Skin doesn’t retain as much moisture. The collagen and elastin in the middle layer break down. As a result, the skin is less firm and less elastic.

It’s similar to what happens to a rubber band as it gets old and dry: It loses elasticity. As a result, when gravity tugs on the skin,

Other changes may not be as noticeable to you. For example, the skin’s ability to fight infection, feel sensations and regulate body temperature also diminish with age.

But the single biggest cause of damage to skin as you age is not aging itself; it’s sun exposure.

Over the years, sun exposure causes fine and coarse wrinkles; baggy skin with a yellow, leathery appearance; and dry, scaly skin.

It also increases the risk for skin cancer.

I grew up near the beaches of Southern California. Many sun worshippers were on the beach pretty much all day, every day.

By the time they were in their late 30s, many of these people had skin

that was as dry, scaly and wrinkled as someone in his or her 70s.

To distinguish the effects of sun exposure from those of aging, look at and feel the skin on your face and the backs of your hands.

Now do the same on a part of your body that isn’t regularly exposed to the sun, such as your lower abdomen or buttocks. The difference can be dramatic.

It’s never too late to protect your skin from sun damage: • Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

• Reapply sunscreen every couple of hours.

• Wear wide-brimmed hats and other protective clothing.

• Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when its rays are most intense.

It’s true that our skin ages, and there’s not a lot we can do about it. But we can do something about the damage done by the sun that makes our skin – and us – look old.

Teen wants to live with boss Dr. Wallace: I really need your advice. I’m 19 and the single mother of a beautiful 7-month-old daughter. The baby’s father is in prison for nine years. He and two friends were convicted of robbing convenience stores with the aid of a gun.

South is in three no-trump.

West leads the heart four. How should South plan the play?

South’s two-no-trump rebid is in principle game-forcing. North may pass only with fewer than six points and no long suit. This agreement gives the responder the three-level to suggest alternative strains, or to start a slam investigation.

South has eight top tricks: three spades, three hearts (given the lead) and two diamonds. Obviously, he should hope for a 3-2 diamond break to generate the extra winner that he needs. But since dummy has no entry outside diamonds, South should lead a low diamond from his hand and play low from the board. What should happen after that?

It will be tempting for East to win the trick and return his second heart. But with this layout, South runs home with an overtrick.

Since West is known to have only four hearts (he led a fourth-highest four, and the two and three are in the dummy), East should realize that even if West has strong hearts, one diamond and three hearts will not produce the number of tricks needed to defeat the contract.

Instead, East should hope his partner has good clubs. After overtaking West’s diamond nine with his jack, East should shift to the club six. Here, that works perfectly.
