Annual Geneva Arts Fair set for July 25-26 If you go

By MADELINE HAPPOLD mhappold@shawmedia.com GENEVA – On Saturday and Sunday, art enthusiasts can enjoy a relaxing weekend strolling down Third Street and perusing various art displays during the 14th annual Geneva Arts Fair.

Voted “one of the best 200 art festivals nationwide” by Sunshine Artist Magazine in 2014, the Geneva Arts Fair this year will be designed as an interactive gallery, allowing visitors the chance to view different art mediums from more than 150 artists from around the country.

Drawings, sculptures and handcrafted jewelry will be some of the features and mediums at the event.

Deputy finds Batavia house trashed on eviction call

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A sheriff’s deputy responding to a house in Batavia for an eviction arrived to find the house trashed, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

According to a report dated July 8, the deputy arrived at the 1100 block of Morton Avenue about 8:30 a.m. June

11 to an unlocked house.

Instead of finding tenants, the deputy found a residence that apparently had been vandalized, as there was “extensive damage in all areas of the house,” according to the report.

“I hope everybody comes to the art fair,” said Kelsey Potts, a Geneva painter. “It’s an awesome environment, and I love the way it makes everybody feel.”

This will be Potts’ first display at the Geneva Arts Fair, and she will share a tent alongside her sister and fel-

AHC Advisors invests in employee health, morale

By ANNA DUTTON adutton@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – AHC Advisors Inc. is competing in a “Fitbit Challenge” through mid-August to promote healthy habits for its employees.

Beginning in May, the seven employees at the AHC Advisors location in St. Charles have bonded over old-fashioned competition.

The idea originated from the duo of Christy Nicholson, office manager for AHC – a wealth management company – and Jorie Pitt, lead financial planner for the business, after their enrollment in the Dick Pond Athletics “Walk 2 Run” program.

“On the first day out we were like, ‘We should have a fitness challenge,’ ” said Pitt.

Pitt decided to share their idea with Craig Larsen, president of AHC in St. Charles, who shared a similar vision.

“Then Craig disappears from the office, like, two minutes later and shows back up with Fitbits for everybody and is like, ‘Challenge, go!,’ ” Pitt

said.

“We tend to be kind of busy,” Larsen said. “So, this kind of gets us out, so that’s good.”

Fitbit is a wearable wireless fitness tracker that measures data such as the number of steps walked, steps climbed and other personal metrics.

The challenges at AHC vary

week to week, including total number of steps taken, total distance walked and total number of active minutes. The employees utilize the Fitbit app on their phones to track each other’s progress, view leaderboards and to virtually “taunt” and “cheer” with the click of a button.

“We get more taunts than we get cheers,” Nicholson joked.

The weekly prizes at AHC include gift cards to Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts and Red Lobster, as well as a gift certificate for bagels for a year at Panera Bread.

To promote healthy habits, the winner at the end of the challenge will receive a gift certificate to Dick Pond Athletics. Beyond gift certificates, the employee with the most steps by the end of July will receive a highly sought-after prize: one paid vacation day.

What are the employees planning to do if they win a paid vacation day?

“I’d probably go to a White Sox game,” Pitt said.

“Hopefully, it’d be sunny and just be out in the sunshine,” Nicholson said. “[I’d] go to the pool, lay by the pool and soak up some sunshine.”

“Probably spend that AMC gift card I’m winning ... and go see a movie,” said Kevin Ryan, assistant planner for AHC. “I have no idea,” intern Lauren Towne said. “Enjoy getting paid and sleep in.”

“Probably come in,” said intern Cooper Macek.

Despite the upcoming fall and winter weather after the challenge’s end, the employees are optimistic about continuing their newfound office healthy habits.

“Check back with us in February,” Nicholson said.

COVER STORY ‘IT’S CRAZY HARD TO DIG OUT’ Wet weather spurs scourge of Canada, other prickly thistle

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Thistles sprout – unbidden and unwanted – in gardens, lawns, vacant land and roadsides, sending up spiny, thorny stems and jagged, prickly leaves that can dominate landscapes and inflict hurtful scratches and painful punctures.

Even if the thistle is pulled up by the root, said Winnie Stauffer of Campton Hills, the noxious weed still will have the last word – especially Canada thistle.

“The root goes down about a foot and then traverses. It pops up a thistle wherever it feels like,” Stauffer said.

“It’s crazy hard to dig out.

You think you have it, and then you don’t. The root is very, very brittle, and you leave a part of the roof when you dig it out.”

The left-behind root will regrow the plant, kind of like the thistle version of horror movie killers who never seem to die.

Or, as Stouffer said, the nine-headed water serpent Hydra from Greek mythology: Cut off one head; it would grow back two.

Stauffer – a self-described North Dakota farm girl and lifelong thistle wrecker – said she worked with her husband this summer to eradicate thistles growing rampant in her Deer Run subdivision in Campton Hills.

Stauffer said she used a herbicide called Curtail to get it under control – the same product she still uses on the family’s 300-plus acres in North Dakota, where she goes several times a year. Thistle also can be controlled by mowing, but it will grow back, she said.

“With a wet spring, a lot of seeds have germinated,” Stauffer said. “Even if you do a prairie burn, it’s not go-

Stauffer said her remedy to kill a Canada thistle when it pops up in a flower bed is to cut it within an inch or

two of the ground, then tie it with a plastic newspaper sleeve that is open at each end.

“Tie the bottom end, then spray into the sleeve, and tie it [or] put a flower pot on it,”

Stauffer said. “Then kiss it goodbye.”

Blame all the rain this spring and summer for encouraging the current scourge of invasive Canada thistle popping up everywhere, said botanist Jack Shouba of Campton Hills.

Shouba teaches at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle.

There are three inva sive species, Shouba said – including also bull and sowthistle – but Canada thistle is the worst for its ability to spread by seed and to regrow from roots.

“Canada thistle is not from Canada; it’s Eurasian,” Shouba said. “What we teach at the arboretum is, if you grab the thistle with a leather glove, and it still pokes you through the glove, it’s a bull thistle. If not, then it’s Canadian.”

Bull thistle is very spiny with yellow tips to the spines and darker purple flowers an inch across, Shouba said.

It grows 4 to 5 feet tall.

“It does not spread like crazy, like the Canada thistle does,” Shouba said.

Canada thistle has a lot of little flowers not less than a half-inch across, while sowthistle has yellow flowers, he said.

“People don’t realize that it is a scourge and what they could do about it,” said Terry Shouba, Jack Shouba’s wife. “It’s not a native plant.”

While the thistle is reviled in the U.S., it is the national symbol of Scotland.

According to the website Scots History, legend has it during the reign of Alexander III, 1249-1286, an invading army of Norway, landed at the Coast of Largs and removed its shoes to be as quiet as possible. One of the invaders stepped on a thistle with his bare foot and yelled in pain, awakening the Scots, who put down the invasion.

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A majority of St. Charles aldermen Monday voted in favor of an ordinance to permit drive-thru alcohol sales for package liquor license holders.

The aldermen voted, 6-2, at its Government Operations Committee meeting Monday in favor of recommending to the St. Charles City Council the proposed city code revision to permit drive-thru sales.

Ward 2 Alderman Rita Payleitner and 4th Ward Alderman Jo Krieger voted against the recommendation, and 5th Ward Alderman Maureen Lewis was absent from the meeting.

A majority of aldermen in October 2013 first voted in favor of directing city staff to draft an ordinance allowing a drive-thru window at the express location of Lundeen Discount Liquors, 1315 W. Main St., St. Charles.

Lundeen operators David and Julie Lundeen later withdrew their request for the drive-thru at their westside location, but were back

in front of aldermen Monday with plans to add the feature in an effort to expand their business.

“We’re pleased we’re being given the opportunity to show that this business model works,” Julie Lundeen said after the committee’s meeting and vote.

The Lundeens have four liquor stores: two in St. Charles, one in DeKalb and one in Sycamore. Their Sycamore location has had a drive-thru for 11 years with little to no complaints, Julie Lundeen said.

The drive-thru window is heavily regulated. Patrons still will have to present proper identification and drive-th-

ru sales will be monitored with a video camera as if the customers were inside the actual store, she said.

Payleitner, who also serves on the city’s Liquor Control Commission, and Krieger in 2013 voted against directing staff to draft the drive-thru alcohol sales ordinance. Krieger has a longstanding history of voting “no” on liquor license requests, and part of Payleitner’s concern is currently no other business in Kane County offers drive-thru alcohol sales.

The full St. Charles City Council will vote on the ordinance at a to-be-determined future meeting.

BATAVIA – Batavia aldermen Monday approved giving the owner of a downtown building a downtown improvement grant to help him install new bathrooms in his building.

Bobby Gunter, who owns the 4-6 E. Wilson St. building, applied for a downtown improvement grant to help pay to demolish the building’s existing restrooms and replace them with three new restrooms that are in compliance with the American with Disabilities Act and all other building code requirements.

The current restrooms are antiquated and do not comply with the ADA, Batavia economic development consultant Chris Aiston has told aldermen. The project is estimated to cost $43,712, and staff recommended the city give Gunter a $21,350 grant.

Only 7th Ward Alderman Drew McFadden voted against awarding the grant to Gunter. The grant agreement includes sever-

al contingencies, including that no grant funds will be disbursed until after Gunter shows proof of a tenant lease committing to occupy some minimum amount of building space for some minimum period of time.

In addition, the agreement stipulates that all of the Wilson Street-level floor space be occupied by a use set forth as either “permitted” or “conditional,” or a minimum of 50 percent of Wilson Street-level floor space to be occupied by either a “retail sales” or a “eating and drinking” establishment.

Also, Gunter must show proof of a lease with a business establishment and for a minimum period of 24 months. McFadden said one of his biggest concerns is the grant isn’t tied to a specific use. He said he would like to see the building used for retail that would generate sales tax.

Seventh Ward Alderman Dave Brown said he liked that the agreement contains several contingencies.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – A woman recently sought help from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office after learning a Twitter account had been set up using her name and photograph without her permission, according to a police report.

The Kaneville woman was afraid the information on the social media account, which took a photograph from her Facebook page, would hurt her business and damage her reputation, the July 9 report stated.

Specifics about what the Twitter account claimed were redacted in the report.

According to the report, the woman recently had a “falling out” with someone who knew information posted on the Twitter account. She reportedly told police she wanted the person spoken to, the account deleted and the harassment to end.

A deputy spoke with that person and advised her “that if she was involved, the Twitter account could easily be traced and that at this time all that [the woman] wanted was for the harassment to stop,” according to the report.

The report indicated the person said she understood.

GENEVA – As Geneva School District 304’s new Communications Director Kristy Poteete-Kriegermeier was traveling through the district earlier this year, she kept hearing about social media from teachers and administrators.

“I heard over and over again ‘I would really like to develop a Facebook for my school.’ Or, ‘I would really like to have a Twitter account for my sports team,’ ” Poteete-Kriegermeier said. “ ‘How do I go about starting that? What can I post? What can’t I post?’ ” Poteete-Kriegermeier presented staff social media guidelines Monday to the school board as part of a more comprehensive communications program to be introduced in

the fall.

She said making guidelines clear before the school year will give guidance to staff on how to use social media.

Being able to use social media effectively is important, Poteete-Kriegermeier said, because it is interactive. When notes or letters are sent home, the communication is oneway. But social media allows staff and parents to engage each other in real time.

“We want to encourage the growth of social media in the district,” Poteete-Kriegermeier said.

Staff will need to fill out an online form to get authorization to create an account on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or a similar social media site, she said.

After her husband’s death, Anna remained in their home and was well cared for by her two sons, Victor and George. She enjoyed baking, knitting and was an avid reader of books until macular degeneration destroyed her eyesight.

Anna is survived by her two sons, Victor (Patricia) Vant and George (Kathleen) Vant; six grandchildren, Nicole (Sean) Hughes, Rebecca Vant, Jennifer Vant, Ellen Vant, Thomas Vant, and Terence Vant; a great grandson, William Hughes; and many nieces and nephews.

At the scene of an accident when the police are called, the officers’ top goal is to ensure the victims’ safety, and then clear the cars out of the accident scene.

Kesler explains, “If your car is not drivable, the police may tow it to an impound lot.

Kesler explains that insurance companies contract with designated repair shops, called their direct re-

pair partners (DRPs). “This arrangement streamlines the process for the insurance company. However, a driver may be more familiar with the quality of work at another shop.”

The DRPs, Kesler says, report to the insurance companies, and seek to contain costs, while striving to have the repairs done safely and efficiently.

He adds, “Customers should evaluate what’s in their best interests. The repair and body shops ultimately decide the quality of the repair, which affects the car’s structural integrity and value.”

While accident victims are eager to expedite the repair process and follow their insurance company’s lead, Kesler suggests taking time to explore your options. He adds that after the police report is made, customers may call their repair shop next, and the shop can manage the process with the insurance company.

Fair’s last day features animals, rides, food

Some blame heat for lower attendance

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – What Nancy Owen’s children liked best about the Kane County Fair were the animals: bunnies, peacocks, swine, cows, sheep and chickens.

After seeing all the animals Sunday, the last day of the five-day fair, Owen, of St. Charles, and her children, Clara, 10, and Ellis, 8, took a lunch break.

Owen enjoyed the Polish platter, while Clara had a roast turkey leg. Ellis already had eaten Dippin’ Dots and wasn’t hungry.

“We just moved here, and this is our first time at the fair,” Owen said.

It was the first time, as well, for Laura Kubica of St. Charles and her daughter, Mabel, 2.

“We checked out the animals mostly,” Kubica said.

A recent transplant from Flint, Michigan, Kubica signed up for emails and mailings with Steve Bruesewitz of St. Charles at the Kane County Democrats booth.

ELBURN – An Elburn teenager received a citation last week after he forced a train to stop and asked for a ride, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

About 3 a.m. Thursday, a deputy responded to the area of Francis Road south of Route 38 west of Elburn and learned from Union Pacific employees the train was forced to stop because a person was standing in the middle of the tracks, flagging them down, according to the report.

The person told them he was riding on another train but jumped off because, the report stated, it was going too fast. He reportedly asked to ride their train into Elburn, noting he lived near the Metra station.

He fled when he was told the police were en route, according to the report. Union Pacific employees described the man, and a deputy reportedly found someone matching the description walking east along the tracks near North and Read streets in Elburn.

The man – Gabriel L. Flowers, 18, of the 500 block of South Main Street, Elburn – was described in the report as “very disrespectful” and as having a “bad attitude.”

He reportedly denied riding a train and claimed he was walking home, but he refused to say where he was coming from.

He claimed cuts on his hands were from tripping on a rock, according to the report. The report indicated he refused medical treatment from paramedics for the minor scrapes.

Union Pacific wanted Flowers cited for trespassing, according to the report.

Flowers reportedly accused a deputy of not having anything better to do when he was handed the citation for trespassing on railroad property.

The report indicated he tore it up as he walked away.

After walking to Route 47, Flowers turned around, walked back to the authorities present and demanded the deputy’s name, according to the report.

The deputy indicated that information, along with the badge number, was on the torn paperwork, the report stated.

“He said he didn’t care about the citation and said it would be a lot better for me if I just told him my name,” the deputy reported.

The deputy eventually walked to the squad car because of Flowers’ desire to be confrontational, according to the report. Flowers reportedly walked a block east and stopped.

“He appeared as if he was attempting to piece his citation back together,” the deputy reported.

In addition to the citation, the report indicated Union Pacific might seek restitution from Flowers for the cost of stopping the train.

The Uber embrace THE WASHINGTON POST

The usual suspects – health care, immigration, welfare – are once again at the center of the 2016 presidential election. But this time around, a company barely on the map last cycle is a hot-button topic: The popular ride-sharing service Uber has become a bellwether for the positions a candidate will take on the future of the workplace and how we should regulate it.

Republicans, predictably, love Uber. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, for example, likes the company because he thinks it shows how unnecessary government is to modern life. Jeb Bush, who just last week zipped around San Francisco using the service, believes that Uber encapsulates the American spirit of entrepreneurship.

Democrats are warier.

Party front-runner Hillary Clinton has not mentioned Uber by name, but she did reference it in a speech on the economy in which she both worried about protections for workers and praised start-up companies for “unleashing innovation.” Similarly, Martin O’Malley said Uber helps revitalize cities, yet he also calls for stricter labor laws to keep the company in check.

It’s bad politics for any candidate to come down too hard on a service that caters to – and has charmed – millennial voters all over the country. It’s also bad policy.

We supported Uber long before Jeffrey P. Bezos, an investor in the company, purchased The Post and long before politicians began praising the service on

the national stage. Uber, a perfect example of how a disruptive technology can improve a formerly noncompetitive market, serves a real need in cities where taxis have taken advantage of riders for years.

But that does not mean Uber is above all criticism, or all regulation. Safety incidents connected to the service abound, from a company driver hitting and killing a 6-year-old girl in San Francisco in 2013 to sexual-assault accusations against drivers in Chicago and Boston. By classifying its drivers as independent contractors rather than employees, Uber often avoids offering any insurance to its workers.

Policies such as New York Mayor Bill deBlasio’s proposed cap on for-hire vehicles are too restrictive. But in states such as California, Uber is shirking even the rules the company itself proposed to state regulators. It is irresponsible for Uber not to accept the need for stricter reporting requirements and background checks to protect passengers, as well as the need for insurance to protect drivers. Politicians should recognize that, too.

The District and Virginia both came to agreements with Uber that allow the company a chance to compete while minimizing the risk to both drivers and riders.

There’s no reason other cities and states cannot do the same, and no reason 2016 contenders eager to embrace Uber should not also be thinking of ways to regulate ride-sharing responsibly.

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com ITASCA – Monday proved to be a difficult day for many Kane County Chronicle-area golfers in the first round of the 35th annual Chick Evans Junior Amateur Tournament.

Narrow fairways made many holes difficult, making each and every drive that much more important.

Two golfers who shot well Monday were Geneva resident Devin Johnson and St. Charles’ Kevin Sobieski. Both shot a 3-over-par 75 to finish in the tie for 20th place heading into today’s second round.

“Today was definitely one of the worst I’ve struck the ball in a while,” Johnson said. “So to come away with a 75, I can’t really complain.

Every hole was tough out

here. ... They are narrow, so you have to hit it straight. If you go right or left, you have a chance to give up a stroke because it’s so narrow.

“The course isn’t that tough if you hit the fairways, so that’s something I have to focus on tomorrow.”

Both St. Charles’ Danny Buetow (4-over) and Batavia’s Andrew Nelson (10-over) found the course difficult Monday, and also thought the narrow holes provided a stern challenge.

“That’s definitely a tough aspect of the course,” Buetow said. “If you don’t hit fairways, you have to scramble to save pars. I think I did a pretty good job of that, I just need to continue to have it in my mind that I belong here and I have the ability to shoot low scores.”

“My putting definitely saved some holes for me,” Nelson said. “I didn’t drive the ball great today, so that was the main reason I didn’t shoot low. Most of the holes aren’t too difficult if you hit the fairways. So the key is to do that.”

Buetow, who has a chance to qualify for the first time at Chick Evans, is right on the cutline as the top 32 qualify for the match play bracket Wednesday.

Today’s round will determine which golfers move on, as the current cut sits somewhere between 4- and 5-over, but will depend on how scores come in as the second round ends.

On the girls side, St Charles North’s Kate Lillie shot a 6-over 78, which is good enough for a tie for 10th place.

“I was getting a little ahead of myself and thinking about my score too much,” Lillie said. “I ended up not executing some of the shots I wanted to because of that. If you don’t drive the ball in the right spot, with these narrow holes, a lot of times, it’s very difficult to get onto the greens.”

Lillie bogeyed the final three holes, but said she will try to be more consistent with both her drive and putting in today’s round. She trails three leaders at the top of the leaderboard at 2-over, including Burlington Central’s Josie Kurosky.

Also playing at Chick Evans was 2014 Kane County Chronicle Girls Golfer of the Year Gianna Furrie. A team-

mate of Lillie’s at North, Furrie struggled for most of her opening round.

Starting on the back nine, Furrie played even par through her first three holes, but never found a rhythm, finishing the day with a 10-over 82.

The top 16 golfers on the girls side will qualify for match play with the cut coming after today’s round, as well.

Furrie will need to rally, but has shown she is more than capable of doing so, while Kurosky and Lillie seem to be in a more stable position to qualify.

Tee times start at 7:30 a.m. as Lillie and Furrie begin their rounds at 8:58 a.m., in separate groups, while Johnson starts at 1:02 p.m. and Sobieski around 2:14 p.m.

arm and then I got down to two strikes and watched a really close one – even coach was smiling at me like, ‘You just got lucky,’ ” he said. “The next one he threw was on the outside corner, so I just tried to take it the other way and shot it down the line.”

The Saints then took the lead on a critical error by the Wildcats with two outs. A rou-

tine ground ball to second base from Aiden Wright appeared to end the inning, but the first baseman couldn’t handle the throw and Dale scored.

“That was a wonderful job,” Saints coach Len Asquini said. “I didn’t like how we played most of the game.

I thought we were real tentative, but actually the last two innings I thought we were better at the plate. We swung the bat a little more aggressive, like we wanted to do something and move the ball and then we got a couple of breaks there.”

East will continue play in the double-elimination tournament at 10 a.m. today, facing Benet at Benedictine.

Libertyville scored five runs in the second inning to jump to the early lead, but couldn’t do much against Klebosits, who came on in relief in the second inning and pitched 4⅔ innings, surrendering only a pair of runs.

“Niko, my goodness, was he tough out there,” Asquini said. “His innings were brilliant for us.”

Podany relieved Klebosits in the seventh inning. He surrendered a one-out single but left the runner stranded.

A stolen base and error put the tying runner on third base with two outs, but Podany was able to induce a groundout to second base to end the game.

“A wonderful job by our guys of staying in there and trying to get on base and trying to score those runs,” Asquini said. “It worked for us this time. Of course, we’d like to not be in that type of hole, but that was part of the way we played for five or six innings today.”

If the Saints defeat Benet this morning, they advance to one of Wednesday night’s semifinals. If they lose, they will play an elimination game immediately afterward at about 12:30 p.m.

NAPERVILLE – Thomas Adams might not be an intimidating presence in the batter’s box, tipping the scale at only 135 pounds.

But his one big swing Monday afternoon weighed heavily on the outcome, as he sparked a thrilling and unforeseen comeback, helping the St. Charles East baseball team erase a five-run deficit as the Saints survived Libertyville, 8-7, in a pool-play game in the Phil Lawler Summer Classic elite eight.

St. Charles East (28-7) was trailing, 7-2, with one out and nobody on base in the top of the seventh inning at North Central College when Adams launched a solo home run to left field.

“I was just trying to put the ball on the bat,” he said.

“I hate losing, so I wanted to get something started because

I wanted to win this game.”

His blast sparked his teammates and also wore on opposing pitcher Ben Kimpler, who appeared to be heading toward a complete-game victory.

Corbin Marucco and Steve Podany followed with walks before Niko Klebosits singled to load the bases.

John DelloStritto walked to force in another run and then a wild pitch from reliever Riley Gowens plated another run to make it a 7-5 game and put the tying runners in scoring position.

That set the stage for Jimmy Dale, who narrowly was rung up on strikes before pushing a two-run double down the right-field line. Dale had fallen behind in the count and took a borderline pitch near the outside corner. It was called a ball, and then Dale connected on the next pitch in a similar location.

Consistency proves valuable for final four at STC Tournament

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Being consistent in a match play format often makes you a tough opponent.

That was the case Sunday for both Brian Charles and Randy Spring, as both advanced to the semifinals in the Championship Flight of the St. Charles Men’s Golf Tournament at Pottawatomie Golf Course.

Both Charles and Spring are two-time champions of the event. Charles won the tournament in both 2008 and 2009, while it has been a few years for Spring, who last won the title in 1985. But even though this marks the 30-year mark since his last win, Spring said he felt like he played some consistent golf Sunday.

“I’m the kind of player that hits a lot of fairways and greens,” Spring said. “I’m not overly explosive so it helps me because I play a pretty steady game. That helps quite a bit in match play because I don’t give away very many holes.”

Spring said he “grinded out” his win against Wally Plywaczewski, 3 and 1, saying he didn’t make a ton of putts, something Plywaczewski did a decent job of to keep himself in the match.

But Spring continued to play consistently and it allowed him to eventually defeat Plywaczewski and advance to the semifinals Saturday.

Charles had a bit of an easier time, winning, 7 and 5, over Rich Kitick. The 33-year-old Kitick was coming off of a 22hole victory Saturday, but was slowed down by Charles.

A member St. Charles Park District Board, Charles sunk a 25-foot putt on the third hole of the day to save par after his drive found the water hazard.

“As an opponent I feel like that was tough to see someone save par after hitting it in the pond,” Charles said. “We both played pretty consistently... maybe not consistently well.

We traded a few holes after the third and then I started to pile them up and had a lot of things go my way.”

Spring, who watched Hansberger grow up and has known his family for a number of years, said he is excited for the opportunity to play the top seed and knows he will have to be at his best.

“I’ve watched Alex grow up and develop into a very good golfer,” Spring said. “He’s going to be a tough, tough opponent for me and I know I’ll have to play some of my best golf to have a chance to come out on top.”

“I think it’s really cool,” Hansberger said of his matchup with Spring. “He’s a good player and we’ve known each other for a long time. We’re family friends, so it should be a good

time going up against him and I’m looking forward to it next weekend.”

Hansberger needed an extra hole to oust three-time champion Tim May, 1 up, in 19 holes to advance. Hansberger trailed by two with three holes to go but won the next two, before the two halved the final hole, forcing a playoff hole to which Hansberger came out on top.

Neither Hansberger nor Charles’ opponent Pessetti have won the tournament. Pessetti got a bit of a free pass into the semifinals, advancing to the final four on default.

Pessetti did golf Sunday, however, shooting a 18-hole “practice” round before facing Charles on Saturday morning.

The semifinals are also set for Flights A, B and C after Sunday’s round. Flight A features Gus Each (who won 2 and 1) taking on Brad Beaulieu (1 up), while Ken Harris (3 and 2) will meet Clay Kelley (1 up).

The Flight B semifinals see Wayne Heuertz (3 and 2) face Russ Davis (2 and 1) on Saturday morning, as well as Carl Masters (3 and 2) meeting up with Chuck Bowgren (4 and 3).

Cougars, T-Rattlers know each other well

This month, the Cougars and Timber Rattlers played in Appleton, Wisconsin on a Monday and Tuesday before traveling to Geneva for two more games on a Wednesday and Thursday.

“I don’t seem to mind it,” said Wisconsin manager Matt Erickson, a Cougars infielder in 1998. “I really like the way it fit into our schedule. … Quick trips. If you’re going to travel long distances, it’s nice to go and stay a little while, you know.

Four days, or at least three. … But the Beloit trip and … this are pretty short trips.”

Monday marked the final time the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were set to meet the Cougars during the regular season. The Western Division rivals played 10 of their 15 games from June 16 onward.

“We don’t look at it like it’s a big deal,” Cougars manager Mark Grudzielanek said. “We just grind through it and get through it. It is what it is. You can’t really worry about it or do a whole lot about it. If there’s something better, hopefully, they think of it next year to get it worked out.”

The 16-team MWL opened 2015 in more flux than usual, as the league office transitioned from Beloit, Wisconsin to South Bend, Indiana, with the retirement of former longtime league president George Spelius.

First-year president Dick Nussbaum, also the league attorney, also has worked with the MWL as vice president and might well have

What is now called “brown furniture” is not selling for high prices any more.

Even unusual pieces made of rare wood are out of favor in most parts of the country. But low auction and shop prices mean there are bargains to be had. The antiques are well made of solid wood, and although already almost 200 years old, probably will be useful for another hundred or more. Curly maple is an uncommon wood used by early craftsmen in Ohio and parts of New England where the soft maple trees were plentiful. It is also called flame maple, tiger maple, ripple maple, fiddleback maple or tiger stripe. The unusual, decorative grain seems almost three-dimensional as it “curls” the length of the board. It is best seen when the board is quartersawn and may not show at all in a flatsawn board.

It is thought that this pattern appears in the wood because of something in the environment. It is not caused by a disease. A related figured wood is known as bird’s eye maple. It has the same glowing figure, but it swirls to look a bit like eyes.

It appears in some hard maple trees if they’re cut the right way. In the 1930s to 1980s, furniture with curly maple veneer was considered special by collectors and prices were high. A good Sheraton chest of drawers could bring $2,000-$3,000, and an exceptional chest might sell for over $5,000. Even refinished, a curly maple chest probably will hold its value, and because it is rare, become even more expensive in the future. *** Q: About 25 years ago, I found a sterling-silver plate at a sale. It was in a cloth bag labeled “John Wanamaker, Jewelers & Silversmiths.” The plate is marked with the initials “JW” on one side of an eagle, and “925” over “1000” on the other side.

John Wanamaker’s department store was a Philadelphia landmark, but did it also make silver?

A: John Wanamaker opened a men’s clothing store in Philadelphia with his brother-in-law in 1861. After his brotherin-law died, Wanamaker expanded the business into an upscale department store. Some items, like your silver plate, were made for Wanamaker’s by other companies. The numbers “925” over “1000” are the standard for sterling silver in the United States and many other

countries. Wanamaker’s became part of Hecht’s in 1995, which is now part of Macy’s. *** Q: A “Baby’s Pal” teething ring rattle was found in my husband’s parents’ estate. It’s in the original box. I’m trying to find out the date so I can figure out to who used it. Can you help?

A: Lunt Silversmiths made the “Baby’s Pal” teething ring rattle in 1934. The teething ring is mother-of-pearl and the attached rattle is sterling silver. They sell online for $15 to $20. Your original box may add value. *** Q: My mother had a tufted bedspread in her 1940s college room. She called it a Bates bedspread, but didn’t know its history. Can you help?

A: The Bates bedspread was first made over 150 years ago. Bates Manufacturing Co. started in Maine in 1850, and first made bedspreads in 1857.

During the Civil War, Mr. Bates bought cotton for the Union army. The company prospered and in 1940 introduced “George Washington’s Choice,” a design inspired by a bedspread Washington gave his wife. That pattern is still made.

Many old spreads have been given to the next generation. College spreads were so popular with students the company made a series of designs inspired by history and presidents. The company is still making bedspreads in the U.S. Vintage bedspreads were made from 100 percent cotton on old shuttle looms. The fringe and other finishing was done by hand.

Early 1900s spreads had a woven label.

Later labels were printed. In the 1960s, bright colors were used for the woven parts and a contrasting color for the fringe. And remember, the original box adds value. ** * Q: I’d like to sell a wall clock I’ve had

The four drawers make it a useful bedroom or even dining-room piece with storage space. In May 2015, it sold at a Garth auction in Delaware, Ohio, for $3,000. since 1968. I think it’s rosewood. The top section with the clock face is octagonal. The lower section has a small glass door that shows the pendulum. It looks like a Regulator clock, but the bottom is shorter. The dial is white with Roman numerals surrounded by Arabic numerals 1 through 31. The back is marked Gilbert Clock Co. What are the extra numbers for? What is it worth?

A: You have a “short drop” Regulator calendar clock called a “schoolhouse” clock. The style was widely used in schools and post offices, shops and other public places. Your clock has a calendar hand that indicates the day of the month on the Arabic numbers. William L. Gilbert (1806-1890) was involved in clock making companies in Bristol, Farmington and Winsted, Connecticut, beginning in 1828. After various partnerships and a factory fire, he formed the William L. Gilbert Clock Co. in Winsted in 1871. The company made inexpensive clocks. Cases usually were oak or rosewood. Gilbert died in 1890, but the company name was used for 63 more years.

Hospital worker abuses her work status

Dear Abby: “Concerned in Massachusetts” (Feb. 20) used her status as a hospital employee to access her husband’s medical records and found a history of STDs. I’m a registered nurse with 40 years’ experience. Every health care organization I know of teaches all their employees about HIPAA violations and that accessing private patient medical information is a criminal offense. We have specific policies against using one’s employee status to access a relative’s medical information.

Insect repellants are safe only when used as directed Dear Doctor K: Which ingredients should I look for in a mosquito repellent? Are there any I shouldn’t use on my kids?

Dear Reader: Ah, summer.

Time for relaxing, playing outside, going to the beach – and mosquitoes. The itchiness from the bites can be maddening. And these tiny, annoying insects can carry serious illnesses, such as West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis.

Many people worry that insect repellents themselves are dangerous. However, used properly, they are quite safe.

It is particularly important to use insect repellents carefully, as described on their labels, for certain groups of people. This includes children, pregnant women and people who work outdoors. These people may be more vulnerable to adverse effects.

Here’s a look at ingredients that will help keep mosquitoes away: • DEET. This is the most commonly used repellent – and the most effective. The stronger the concentration of DEET in a product, the longer it will protect you. The American Academy of Pediatrics has said that it

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff is safe to use products with up to 30 percent DEET. • Picaridin. This repellent, which is also applied to your skin, is less widely available, but is also effective.

• Lemon eucalyptus OIL. This plant-based repellent should not be used on children under 3 years of age. It is about as effective as low concentrations of DEET and is found in sprays and lotions.

• IR3535. This ingredient is not widely available in the United States.

• Permethrin. This repellent works well, but shouldn’t be used on the skin – just on clothing or mosquito netting.

There are several other mosquito repellents on the market, but they are not as effective as the ones I’ve discussed.

Just as important as which repellents you use is how you use them. Here are some tips: • Don’t use insect repellents on infants younger than 2 months old. (You can put mosquito netting over a baby

carrier.)

• When you use spray repellent on your skin, clothing or mosquito netting, apply it outdoors, not indoors. That way, you won’t breathe it in.

• Don’t spray a repellent directly on your face. Instead, spray it on your hand and then rub some on your face.

• When you use a spray repellent, don’t overdo it: You need only a little, and using more is not necessarily better.

• Don’t reapply repellent unless you are outside for more than six hours or so.

Finally, take steps to avoid mosquitoes in the first place.

Mosquitoes are most abundant between dusk and dawn, so try to be indoors at those time. If you are going to be outside, wear lightweight, long-sleeved tops and long pants sprayed with repellent.

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. Make it a habit to dump out buckets or kiddie pools at the end of each day.

South has only three top losers: two spades and one club. But the 4-1 trump split puts his contract in jeopardy. Let’s suppose that the defenders cash their two spade tricks, then shift to hearts. (Yes, playing a third round of spades is good defense.) Declarer wins and starts to draw trumps, but when he sees the bad break, he must stop and drive out the club ace. (If he pulls all of the trumps, the defenders can cash spade tricks when in with the club ace.)

Now East must show control.

He must not take the first club trick. He must take the second and note that his partner has signaled high-low with his doubleton. Then East gives West a club ruff to defeat the contract.
