Kane County Fair ends on high note

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – With about seven hours left of the 2014 Kane County Fair, board president Larry Breon didn’t have final attendance figures but knew crowds were larger than last year.

“From the fair’s perspective,” he said late Sunday afternoon, “we’re very pleased.”

The week’s mild weather had to have helped. Last year, Breon said, Saturday was “very, very hot,” and attractions had to close because of a strong storm.

Meanwhile, he said, this year was “one of those years you dream about but don’t see very often.”

Crowds on Sunday packed the grandstand for the demolition derby while a show by Big Cat Encounters drew a standing-room-only crowd.

Other animals also drew spectators – and buyers. The hours-long 4-H Blue Ribbon Sale featured such species as cattle, sheep, goats and poultry on the auction block.

“Last chance to fill your freezer with beef,” auctioneer Steve Almburg called out as bidding began for the last of the blue ribbon cattle.

Almburg’s participation in the auction is as much of a tradition as the fair itself, Breon said. Almburg’s father once ran it, he said, and one of Almburg’s sons helped him this year.

The sale “generates a lot of money for the 4-Hers,” Breon said, and it has helped many pay for college.

As bidding on poultry neared, Fantastics 4-H member Madison Solomon of St. Charles stood in the poultry barn near her caged chickens, which were next to three up for auction. The 12-year-old said she also had photography, cooking and visual arts entries on exhibition.

Volunteers help feed hungry

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Northern Illinois Food Bank’s mission of feeding the hungry does not take a summer break.

The food bank received some help in that mission on Saturday when teams representing local companies, community organizations, church groups and families competed to pack the most food and raise the most money for the food bank. During the food bank’s inaugural “Pack and Give Back” event, about 80 people helped pack bags with meals that the food bank will distribute at nine back-to-school fairs in August.

“It’s an event to raise awareness about hunger and help feed our hungry neighbors,” said Erik Jacobsen, communications manager for the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Last year, the Northern Illinois Food Bank distributed 42 million meals to those in need through its network of food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and youth and senior centers.

Two flower bouquets were left along a repaired fence near Eagle Street and Aurora Avenue in Naperville where a car on Saturday left the roadway, crashed through the fence and landed in a water-filled quarry, killing two of the men in the car. the 2007 Chevy Impala that Szot was driving. They were subsequently located by fire and police divers in the car, which was 50 feet under water, and were taken to Edward Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Szot and Boddupalli both attended Northwestern University in Evanston and were friends, said Szot’s attorney, Jeff Fawell.

“It is a tragedy,” Fawell said. Szot’s parents also were at the bail hearing.

“They are in deep despair,” Fawell said. “They wish to express their sympathies to the families of Boddupalli and Syed.”

Szot graduated from Geneva High School in 2011. When he was a student at Geneva High School, Szot was co-president of the group GHS Students Against Destructive Behavior, his parents confirmed Sunday.

Before the incident, Szot had never even been given a traffic ticket, Fawell said.

“He has never been arrested,” Fawell said, in pushing for bail to be set at $100,000.

Fawell said he was not knowledgeable about what prosecutors said took place before the crash.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicates that Szot was driving westbound on Aurora Avenue and left the roadway at Eagle Street, crashing into several trees and landing in the quarry on the northwest corner of the intersection.

Szot was able to escape from the vehicle and swim to safety, police said. He was taken to Edward Hospital in Naperville, where he was treated and released.

“Early Saturday morning, two young men tragically lost their lives because of a very bad decision made by an alleged drunk driver,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release.

“People have got to learn that DUI crashes are not accidents and are 100 percent avoidable by not drinking before you get behind the wheel of a car.”

LOCAL BRIEF GENEVA TOWNSHIP – An Elgin man died in unincorporated Geneva Township Sunday after he became trapped under a tractor, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Sheriff’s deputies responded

to the 32W600 block of Fabyan Parkway, where they learned Joel Bork, 47, was operating a light-weight front-loaded tractor on his family farm and got trapped beneath the machinery when it flipped, police said.

Police said it is unknown why the tractor flipped.

Relatives began looking for him when he hadn’t been seen in a few hours, police said, noting they are the ones who called 911.

Bork, of the 1400 block of Getzelman Road, was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a span of about two hours, teams packed 4,452 meals. Corey Williams, an employee at the Mercedes Benz dealership in Carol Stream, was a member of the team that packed the most meals – 1,086.

Employees from Exelon also were part of his team.

“The fact that we are helping some less-fortunate families, it is an honor,” Williams said.

Mike Hall, casino shift manager at Hollywood Casino in Aurora, also was happy to lend a hand.

“We’re all excited to be here to help out,” he said. “It was a fun way to get together.”

Hollywood Casino volunteers at Northern Illinois Food Bank two to three times a year, said Melonie Johnson, vice-president of finance for Hollywood Casino in Aurora.

“It is a team building event for us, as well as donating back to the community,” Johnson said.

Bail was set at $250,000 for a Geneva man charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless homicide after his car landed in a water-filled quarry in Naperville early Saturday morning, killing two men.

Michael Szot, 21, of Geneva, has been charged with four counts of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol causing the death of another person Michael Szot and two counts of reckless homicide. He must post 10 percent, or $25,000, to be released.

Police and firefighters responded about 1:59 a.m. to the intersection of Aurora Avenue and Eagle Street for a report of a vehicle that had driven into a Naperville Park District quarry.

Szot admitted to police that he had been smoking marijuana earlier that day, and that they had been drinking rum shots and beer at a local bar before the crash, prosecutors said during Sunday’s bail hearing in front of DuPage County Judge Timothy McJoynt. Prosecutors said a marijuana pipe had been found in his pocket.

Prosecutors had requested that bail be set at $3 million.

Szot’s next court appearance is set for Aug. 11 for arraignment in front of Judge Kathryn Creswell. If found guilty of the charges, Szot faces a maximum penalty of up to 28 years in prison.

Camp a homecoming for former NFL QB

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Randy Wright moved around quite a bit in his youth but he said he found a home in St. Charles.

That made relocating the “Trickey-Wright QB/Receiver Camp” to St. Charles an attractive proposition to Wright, who went on to quarterback collegiately at Wisconsin and for the NFL’s Green Bay Packers after starring at St. Charles High.

Wright, whose mother plus a brother and a sister still reside in St. Charles, shifted the west suburban location of the camp this summer from Wheaton Warrenville South to St. Charles North. The two-day camp began Saturday afternoon at North.

“I went to high school in Texas as a freshman and in Boston as a sophomore, so this was the only place I went for two years, and I felt because of the moving around, this was really more home to me,” said Wright, a 1979 St. Charles High graduate. “The

high school friends I met in St. Charles are still dear friends I have to this day so that acceptance for a junior coming in … the friends and teammates and kids I had here were fabulous.”

About 40 campers – more quarterbacks than receivers – attended the camp.

Wright specializes in molding quarterbacks, and said it’s possible to have a substantial impact even in just a two-day span.

“The biggest impact you can have from a quarterback perspective, a lot of kids think they throw the ball with their arm, and the stronger my arm is, the farther I’m going to throw it,” Wright said. “You throw the ball more with your lower body, and the left side of the body working with the right side of the body. And when you can teach them and show them it’s not just all arm, that it’s working together, it’s firing the hip and getting the left side cleared out of the way, those are pretty simple concepts that once they see

So you can change that pretty quickly.”

St. Charles North junior quarterback Kyle Novotney was among the campers seeking to benefit from Wright’s tips on footwork, arm angles, timing and leadership.

“It’s a great opportunity to get coaching from a guy

who’s played NFL football, see his different viewpoints on how to throw a football and techniques,” Novotney said. “I feel like he’s helped me a lot in the first few hours.”

Wright and his partner, Wisconsin Football Coaches Association hall of fame inductee Jeff Trickey, put on one- and two-day camps

around the country.

St. Charles North coach Rob Pomazak said Wright approached him last year about the possibility of North playing host to the camp, and Pomazak said he was glad to help make it work. He soaked in the instructions of Wright and his staff and said he wished more of his players were able to attend.

“The thing that sets this camp apart from what I’m witnessing is the level of instruction and how it fits every single athlete that’s here, whether it’s a starting varsity quarterback, which there’s a few, or if it’s a sixth grade kid who’s learning the position,” Pomazak said. “The way they [structure] their instruction, it’s extremely beneficial to everybody.”

Pomazak expects the camp to become a summer staple in St. Charles. He said he’d like to see 100 or more attendees in the future and would like to reach out to more athletes at other schools in the area.

future, but the opportunity to observe on the sidelines allowed the junior to see his team cooperating more and coming together as a team, which he hopes will translate to the start of the season next month.

“I know we are a better team than what our record [from last year] says,” Berango said. “We are continuously getting better, and this should be a good year for us.”

ACC coach Brian Casey grades his team based off whether he sees a better effort than the last time they played.

The Chargers finished the day 4-1.

“For the kids’ sake, it’s a whole lot better to see people that they’re not used to playing so there’s competition there,” Casey said. “Fundamentally, we have some improvements to work on, but individual improvement is big for us.”

ACC will be a “young team” said Casey, but he thinks the Chargers will be more dynamic and balanced this season, as the coaching staff has spent time trying to find ways to mesh the run and pass game together to make the team more explosive.

The Chargers had seven players earn Suburban Christian Conference First Team All-Conference honors in 2013, and will be returning two of them in three-year starter running back/safety Roman Padilla and second-year starting linebacker Ben Ariano.

North Stars win 7-on-7: On Thursday, St. Charles North won the inaugural “Fox Valley 7s,” an eight-team, 7-on-7

passing invitational featuring teams from the west suburbs and Rockford area that took place at James O’Breen Community Park.

The host North Stars won an intense championship game against St. Francis in a game that Pomazak said “kind of felt like a Friday night.”

“We didn’t start off very good [in the tournament]” Pomazak said. “We started off against Machesney Park Harlem and we didn’t play very well, and I think our guys, once we got to bracket play, we really stepped up our level of competitiveness. We kind of challenged them that this is our 7-on-7, we’ve got to protect our area, and we want to see

them compete.”

Pomazak said he’d like to see the event double in size beginning in 2015.

“The goal for next year is to bump it to 16 teams, probably run it a little bit later in July so we don’t bump into the West Aurora Big Butts [lineman challenge] and those types of things, but we want to double it to get to 16 teams and then every year make it grow a little bit,” Pomazak said.

“We’re in the works of possibly having a combine attached to it to make it a two-day event, so those are the kinds of things that we’re looking for for next year. But the event was great.”

By JAKE BARTELSON jbartelson@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Don’t tell Randy Spring that taking some time off from the St. Charles Men’s Tournament at Pottawatomie Golf Course was a bad thing.

Despite having not played in the tournament since 1985, Spring finds himself in a good spot after defeating Dan Pessetti in a 5 and 4 match Sunday, setting up a showdown with six-time winner Rich Balla in the semifinals next weekend.

Spring started fast and Pessetti couldn’t close the gap.

“Today, I hit my irons really well, and I made some putts. I got ahead and didn’t make any mistakes, so [Pessetti] couldn’t catch up,” Spring said.

Spring, of St. Charles, is a two-time champion of the tournament with titles in 1981 and 1985, and while he feels good about his placement, he knows there’s still some golf to be played.

“We have two more matches next weekend, and I’m playing Rich Balla whom I’ve known for a long time, so it should be a good match,” Spring said.

Like many of the competitors, Spring has been golfing at Pottawatomie since childhood.

“When we were kids, we used to say we couldn’t wait to play in the city tournament and get after the adults,” Spring said.

Being so familiar with the course, Spring thinks it “sets up really well for a match play tournament.” But Spring won’t take his comfort level of the course for granted, as he plans to drive a few balls after work during the week.

Elsewhere Sunday, in a bit of an upset, two-time defending champion Matt Daly fell at the hands of Dave Chappell after Chappell prevailed with a 6 and 5 victory.

With Daly finished, Chappell will have to turn his attention to next weekend’s match against Mike Muehling, who defeated Keith Petri in an extra-hole playoff.

“I didn’t really have real bad shots. I think everything was working pretty well,” Muehling said. “I wasn’t striking the ball real good the first nine, but came back the second nine. My putting was decent in the front nine, and that’s what kept me in it.”

After observing Chappell this weekend, Muehling noticed he didn’t make many mistakes, so he expects a strong showing from Chappell.

“I will have to have my best game next week to have any sort of a chance,” Muehling said.

AURORA – Saturday’s ACC Charger 7-on-7 passing tournament provided Geneva safety Chris Barger another opportunity to get a grip on the speed of the game.

“It’s to show what we learned from camp and display it somewhere,” he said. “It’s a real good exercise for us.”

Geneva, Burlington Central, Wheaton Academy and host ACC were among the 20 football teams taking part in the 7-on-7 contest.

Points of emphasis during the offseason for Geneva have been conditioning, speed and footwork, and coach Rob Wicinski knows how important those aspects are to a winning football program.

“We can’t go anywhere unless we compete,” Wicinski said. “I’m really pleased with their effort and that they’re out there competing. The Xs and Os and getting guys in position, that’ll all come with time. It’s a process, and we’re looking to compete and have fun out here.”

Geneva is coming into the new season looking to evolve even more as an offense despite averaging more than 35 points a game last season. With Northern Illinois recruit quarterback Daniel Santacaterina and wideout Pace Temple leading the charge, Geneva is poised

for another successful season.

“Santa is a good boy, and he’s here all the time,” Wicinski said. “He has a nice ability to read the defense and execute.

My wideouts have been very crisp on their routes, and that’s part of the process with making sure our concepts are correct.”

With a second conditioning camp coming up next week, Geneva will be looking to build upon its 4-0-1 showing at the tournament.

“If I stay out of the way, we should be OK,” Wicinski joked.

At Burlington Central, coach Rich Crabel hopes to hammer home the value of full effort after his Rockets went 3-2 on the day.

“It’s just a matter of seeing who wants to run,” Crabel said. “We’re not running [hard enough], so our biggest thing is effort and being where you’re supposed to be.”

After completing an up-anddown 2013 campaign in which Central finished 4-5, the summer serves as an opportunity for the team to get stronger and learn coverage assignments.

“Last year, I thought we finished up pretty strongly, so we need to carry that over into this season, and fix the little things from now until August,” Crabel said.
