Heat bites into fair attendance Fair’s last day includes animals, rides, food

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – What Nancy Owen’s children liked best about the Kane County Fair were the animals: bunnies, peacocks, swine, cows, sheep and chickens.

After seeing all the animals Sunday, the last day of the fiveday fair, Owen, of St. Charles, and her children Clara, 10, and Ellis 8, took a lunch break.

Owen enjoyed the Polish platter while Clara had a roast turkey leg. Ellis had eaten Dippin Dots and wasn’t hungry.

“We just moved here and this is our first time at the fair,” Owen said.

It was the first time, as well, for Laura Kubica of St. Charles and her daughter Mabel, 2.

“We checked out the animals mostly,” Kubica said.

A recent transplant from Flint, Michigan, Kubica signed up for emails and mailings with Steve Bruesewitz of St. Charles at the Kane County Democrats booth.

“And I have to get registered to vote,” Kubica said.

Outside, an oversized elephant statue attracted other fairgoers to the Kane County Republicans booth. There, Aurora Township Committeeman Linda Pasetti-Olson passed out pencils and invited passersby to join the straw poll of the GOP presidential hopefuls.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker received the most with 23 votes, but Donald Trump was close behind with 22.

Shawn Peterson of Sycamore, with his daughter Hattie, 14 months, girlfriend Jordan Maretti and mother Corrine Dutkovich of South Elgin, spent the day looking at the 4-H animals, going to the petting zoo and watching the tractor pull.

Peterson said. “It was too hot to come earlier.”

Others blamed heat for a low fair turnout, such as Cynthia Williams who works for a cleaning service. Williams was stationed at a restroom near the grandstand and said a lower turnout translated into fewer tips.

“I had a good year last year,” Williams, of Canton, Ohio said. “There was 50 percent fewer people this year and I made 50 percent fewer

tips.”

Norm Skala of Campton Hills agreed that attendance was way down at the fair. Skala, who said he was in charge of 4-H exhibits, blamed the heat. Temperatures were reported in the 90s on Saturday.

“The weather killed us,” Skala said.

Fair President Larry Breon would not concede attendance was down by as much as half, but said weather is always a factor.

“Attendance down by half?

We don’t know yet. I don’t think it’s that bad at all,” Breon said. “Today [Sunday] was nicer. A little overcast, not quite as hot. Things are better when it’s not raining.”

Shakespeare in the Park presents ‘Twelfth Night’

Comedy, specifically William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night,” took center stage as part of an annual program presented by the Geneva Cultural Arts Commission.

By 5 p.m. – the publicized time for seating – dozens had already claimed patches of the Geneva park with blankets, lawn chairs and coolers.

“A lot of people plan their vacations around this event,” event chairwoman Gail Gaboda said.

It began in 2007, she said.

Describing it as a beloved event, she asked where else can the public get a free night of comedy in a beautiful park.

Last year, Gaboda said, the free event fell on a day with perfect weather and drew about 800 people. She was unsure how Saturday’s iffy weather – a heat advisory and tornado watch were both issued by the National Weather Service – would affect this year’s attendance.

The Midsummer Theatre Troupe, which also has performances in Aurora and Na-

perville, got rained out Friday night, Director Kristen Duerdoth said.

“This has been a really bad year for weather,” she said.

The Geneva resident began preparing for “Twelfth Night” in December, she said. The cast was set mid-April, she said, and rehearsals began in June to accommodate the many students who participate.

Duerdoth described the play as “really a team effort” that is all volunteer.

“No one gets paid,” she said.

Shakespeare in the Park only features comedies, Gaboda said. Even if the audience gets lost with the Shakespearian language, she said, they can usually follow along through the actors’ motions and gags.

“They definitely go for the laughs,” she said.

Consistency proves valuable Semis set for Championship Flight including past winners Spring, Charles

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Being consistent in match-play format often makes you a tough opponent.

That was the case for both Brian Charles and Randy Spring on Sunday, as both advanced to the semifinals in the Championship Flight of the St. Charles Men’s Golf Tournament at Pottawatomie Golf Course.

Both Charles and Spring are two-time champions of the event. Charles won the tournament in both 2008 and 2009, while it has been a few years for Spring, who last won the title in 1985.

But even though this marks the 30-year mark since his last win, Spring said he felt like he played consistent golf Sunday.

“I’m the kind of player that hits a lot of fairways and greens,” Spring said. “I’m not overly explosive, so it helps me because I play a pretty steady game. That helps quite a bit in match play because I don’t give away very many holes.”

Spring said he “grinded out” his win against Wally Plywaczewski, 3 and 1, saying he didn’t make a ton of putts, something Plywaczewski did to keep himself in the match.

But Spring continued to play consistently, and it allowed him to eventually defeat Plywaczewski and advance to the semifinals Saturday.

Charles had a bit of an easier time, winning, 7 and 5, over Rich Kitick.

The 33-year-old Kitick was coming off of a 22-hole victory Saturday, but was Charles slowed him down.

A member of the St. Charles Park District Board, Charles sunk a 25-foot putt on the third hole of the day to save par after his drive found the water hazard.

“We both played pretty consistently ... maybe not consistently well. We traded a few holes after the third, and then I started to pile them up and had a lot of things go my way.”

Charles and Spring will be joined in the semifinals by top-seeded Alex Hansberger and Dan Pessetti.

Spring, who watched Hansberger grow up and has known his family for a number of years, said he is excited for the opportunity to play the top seed and knows he will have to be at his best.

“I’ve watched Alex grow

up and develop into a very good golfer,” Spring said.

“He’s going to be a tough, tough opponent for me, and I know I’ll have to play some of my best golf to have a chance to come out on top.”

“I think it’s really cool,” Hansberger said of his matchup with Spring. “He’s a good player, and we’ve known each other for a long time. We’re family friends so it should be a good time going up against him, and I’m looking forward to it next weekend.”

Hansberger needed an extra hole to oust three-time champion Tim May, 1 up, in 19 holes to advance. Hansberger trailed by two with

three holes to go, but won the next two before the two halved the final hole, forcing a playoff hole, which Hansberger came out on top.

Neither Hansberger nor Charles’ opponent Pessetti have won the tournament.

Pessetti got a bit of a free pass into the semifinals, advancing to the final four on default.

Pessetti did golf Sunday, however, shooting an 18-hole “practice” round before facing Charles on Saturday.

The semifinals also are set for Flights A, B and C after Sunday’s round. Flight A features Gus Each (who won 2 and 1) taking on Brad Beau-

lieu (1 up), while Ken Harris (3 and 2) will meet Clay Kelley (1 up).

The Flight B semifinals see Wayne Heuertz (3 and 2) face Russ Davis (2 and 1) on Saturday morning, as well as Carl Masters (3 and 2) meeting up with Chuck Bowgren (4 and 3).

Finally, Flight C will see Rick Bellefleur (9 and 8) take on Jon Quirin (3 and 1), and in the other matchup, Ed Blyshak (5 and 4) will meet Kevin Gaffney (4 and 3).

All semifinal matches will tee off Saturday, starting with the Hansberger-Spring Championship Flight pairing at 7 a.m.

My favorite story about late Hawks owner Bill Wirtz, father of current owner Rocky, involves liquor, which is not surprising, given the family’s fortune was partly built on booze. Upset about coverage of his team, Bill Wirtz had invited several newspaper editors to his office for an afternoon meeting. Wirtz opened the doors to a beautiful bar that seemed to have every kind of alcohol known to man.

“What’ll it be?’’ he said.

It still being business hours, two of the editors asked for water and another for a Diet Coke. Wirtz looked crushed, as if the last vestiges of a man’s-man world had fallen away right in front of him. For all his money, it came down to a guy wanting to have a drink with company.

Schwarber and Soriano in, Jackson out THE SUN-TIMES ATLANTA – If this was a statement series for the Cubs to open the second half of the season, the roster move the team made on the way out of Atlanta on Sunday night spoke loudest and clearest about where they think they’re going, and how quickly.

On a day where they got another dominant pitching performance from Jake Arrieta in a 4-1 victory, the Cubs cut ties with embattled right-hander Edwin Jackson – choosing to eat the remaining $15.63 million on his contract after failing for more than a year to make a trade that might recoup even a fraction of that balance.

Jackson, the $52 million bust who was team president Theo Epstein’s first big free agent with the Cubs, was designated for assignment to

make room on the roster for former All-Star closer Rafael Soriano, who joins the team in Cincinnati on Monday.

“I wasn’t really expecting it, but at this point in my career, it’s hard for me to say I’m surprised by anything that happens,” said Jackson, who remained one of the most popular teammates in the clubhouse after two years of struggles as a starter that resulted in his demotion to middle relief this season.

It’s like when a presidential candidate arrives at a working class town with his sleeves rolled up in full man-of-thepeople mode. Nobody really buys it, but we get it.

There’s something about Chicago that yanks people back to earth, a whisper in the wind that says, “What, you think you’re better than everybody else?’’

To suggest the McCaskeys work at being normal implies that it’s some sort of act, and that’s not fair. You see chairman George McCaskey, and you see a man who looks like he grew up in a home in middle-class Des Plaines with 10 siblings, which he did.

Virginia McCaskey, the Bears owner and daughter of renowned penny pincher George Halas, reportedly gives her children a good life but not the means for an ostentatious one. She has donated plenty to charity and done it quietly. Her Wikipedia entry is all of four paragraphs.

Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts goes the low-key route, sometimes taking the train home from Wrigley Field, even if he comes from a family worth $4.5 billion. Obviously, we’re talking appearances here. For all I know, he has former Wrigley rooftop owners cleaning his bathroom floors.

Chicago has a long history of cheap ownership, but salary caps have neutralized even the most miserly tendencies.

It might explain why public hatred toward owners doesn’t seem as harsh as it used to be.

Championships have helped, too. Ask Rocky Wirtz.

When you see photos of dolled-up people at social gatherings in the newspaper, do you roll your eyes or wish you were one of them? I’m guessing there are many more eye-rollers. That’s just how Chicago rolls.

A rich owner sipping a drink, pinky up? Woe to him.

A guy in a camouflage T-shirt?

We get that. Sort of.

Jon Lester walked into the Cubs’ clubhouse wearing a camouflage T-shirt and blue jeans the other day, and I couldn’t help but think, “What’s he using the $155-million contract on?’’

Whereas, if I had that kind of money, you’d see a fabulous display of … what? Designer bib overalls? Sansabelt slacks with white loafers? Treasure-hunt metal detectors?

OK, maybe there are people who would do better with Lester’s money than I could.

Or he can.

Forbes recently published its annual list of the most valuable sports franchises in the world, and Chicago teams were well represented in the top 50. The Bulls ranked 14th at $2 billion, the Cubs 17th at $1.8 billion and the Bears 20th at $1.7 billion. The Blackhawks and the White Sox didn’t make the cut, but I wouldn’t cry for Hawks owner Rocky Wirtz, whose family reportedly is worth $4.4 billion, or Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, who also controls the Bulls.

Big city, famous teams, very rich owners.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips childhood to the fact that my mom and dad have always acted as best friends when we’re together, despite having been separated almost my entire life.

However, lately I have been finding my parents’ relationship very inappropriate. They have been hanging out together often without me, and almost certainly without my stepmother’s knowledge. I have stumbled upon suggestive texts that imply a flirty relationship, and probably more. I don’t know whether these are recent developments or if I have just stopped being naive.

I would never want my stepsister to discover anything about my mom and dad the hard way.

I especially don’t want to see her hurt by becoming a child of divorce.

Would I be overstepping my boundaries if I asked my mom and dad to spend less time together and restrict their relationship to being parents to me and that’s all? – Hurt Child-Woman

Dear Hurt Child-Woman:

If you approach it the way you have written it to me, yes, I think you would offend both of your parents.

If you are afraid your stepsister may be hurt if her parents separate, be there to comfort and support her, but do not insert yourself into what may or may not be an explosive minefield.

This may be the way your mom and dad have always related to each other, your stepmother may be aware of it, and you could come across as extremely presumptuous.

Dear Abby: I recently found a notebook of my mom’s. On the outside cover it said, “Disclaimer: Do Not Open Unless You’re Me!” As I curiously flipped through the pages, I learned many things about my mom that I didn’t know, like her faith in God and how the things that happened in her life molded her into who she is today. I stopped at the page titled, “The Summer of 10th Grade.” As I read it, I learned the truth about how I was conceived. Written in capital letters were the words “I WAS RAPED.” I had no clue.

I’d always assumed Mom got pregnant at 16 because she made stupid decisions, but I was wrong.

I could never imagine how my mom could get through a day without looking at me as a reminder of what happened to her.

Where do I go from here? Should I confront her about it?

I have no one to talk to, so I hope you can give me some advice. – Child of Rape Dear Child: I’m glad you wrote, because it gives me an opportunity to point out that if you hadn’t been wanted, your mother had other alternatives. If you had no clue, it’s because you are the daughter she loves, and I’m sure you have been a source of much joy in her life.

If you feel the need to discuss this with her, then you should.

Because she left the notebook in a place where it could be discovered, she may have subconsciously wanted it to be found.
