Where to see fireworks in Kane County

By MITCH CHAMBERLAIN mchamberlain@shawmedia.com Another firework-filled, Fourth of July weekend is here. The following are several places in Kane County where families can view firework displays, go for a picnic or attend a parade.

St. Charles

In Pottawatomie Park, 8 North Ave. St. Charles, a fireworks display will begin at dusk Saturday, and the Fox Valley Concert Band will perform from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the amphitheater, followed by Hello Dave from 6 p.m. until the start of the fireworks show.

Also on the Fourth of July, Swanson Pool will open at noon for park district residents and season pass holders and at 12:30 p.m. for nonresidents. Nonresidents pay $10, and residents pay $7.

In addition, the River View Miniature Golf course features waterfalls, sand traps and bridges for a challenge. Admission is $6 for those 16 and older, $5 for those 6 to 15, and $2 for those 5 and younger, with the final tee-off time at 7 p.m. Concessions will be available at the River Park Miniature Golf concessions stand until 9:15 p.m.

Additionally, the Pottawatomie Golf Course will open at 6 a.m. Saturday, with the final tee-off time at 4 p.m.

The park itself opens at 8 a.m., and picnic tables will be available, but it is recommended attendees bring

Batavia

At RiverEdge Park, 360 Broadway Ave., Aurora, the American Legion Band will perform at 6:15 p.m. Friday.

Afterward, the Fox Valley Orchestra perform from 7 to 9 p.m., consisting of more than 55 musicians from around the area. The music will include movie scores, classical and chart toppers.

Once the lights go dark after the orchestra’s last song, the fireworks display will begin, scheduled at 9:30 p.m.

Batavia’s Fourth of July Sky Concert begins at 5 p.m.

Saturday with Savor-the-Flavor food vendors serving treats and continuing until the fireworks display begins at 9:30 p.m.

Attendees are invited to watch the fireworks display at the corner of Millview Drive and West Main Street at Engstrom Park in Batavia. More space will be available at the Batavia High School athletic fields, along West Main Street.

Pottawatomie Golf Course unites three generations

By CAROL HAGGAS editorial@kcchronicle.com The family that plays together, stays together. And for three generations of Sweet men (and a few women, too), the place that keeps them coming back for more is Pottawatomie Golf Course in St. Charles.

For Tom Sweet, his son, Tommy, and his grandson, Thomas, the nine-hole, nationally recognized course nestled along the banks of the scenic Fox River is a home away from home.

“I started playing golf down here 56 years ago in 1959, and I’ve been playing here ever since,” said Sweet, who also works part-time in the pro shop, now that he’s retired from his own business.

“I’ve played golf all over the country, and this course is as nice, if not nicer, than many of the country clubs where I’ve played.”

Sweet began playing golf as a youngster, and passed the love of the game on to his son, Tommy, who, in turn, taught his own son, Thomas, how to play. And like their father and grandfather, both Tommy and Thomas parlayed their passion for golf into part-time employment, working with the grounds’ crews and in the

Working and playing at Pottawatomie is in the Sweet family blood. Tom Sweet met his wife of 54 years, Nancy, when she was a high school student working part time at Swanson Pool.

They married and had three children; in addition to son Tommy, they also had two daughters, Patty and Julie, who also went on to work at Swanson Pool and River View Miniature Golf.

“My whole family has worked here at one time or another,” Tom Sweet said. “And we play golf down here as a family. My son and his son, my son-in-law and his son, my daughter Julie and I. It’s been

a family thing.”

Part of what makes golf such a perfect fit for the Sweet family is the serenity of the location and the relaxed pace of the game. Tommy travels extensively for business and Thomas just graduated from high school. Their busy schedules don’t leave as much room for golf as they used to. But Pottawatomie’s short, ninehole course is something they can make room for.

“We’ll try to get a half dozen or so games in together this summer,” Tom Sweet said.

Golfing at Pottawatomie also is something that lets the Sweet family focus on just being together without the distractions that seem to accompany many other family-oriented activities.

“There is no place more enjoyable than to be sitting out there on the course somewhere by the river and to really take the time to talk to the person you’re golfing with,” Tom Sweet said. “Julie and I have probably had some of our better conversations out there on the golf course.”

But golf has always been more than just a family activity for Tom Sweet and his children and grandchildren. It’s also been a way to develop and foster lifelong friendships.

“There’s a certain camaraderie you develop with a group, and it deepens as you go,” Tom Sweet said.

In fact, there is a memorial tree out on the course dedicat-

ed specifically to Sweet and a cohort of his golfing buddies who called themselves the 638 Group. The last original member of the group that was formed around 1970, Sweet and his friends played together for more than 30 years.

“We called ourselves the 638 Group because we always played at 6:38 on Saturday mornings,” Tom Sweet said.

“We looked forward to Saturday mornings because it was our time to get together with our friends. We could get in a round of golf here and still be home by 9 o’clock and have the rest of the weekend with our families.”

When the love of family and friends, sport and setting all come together – as they do for Tom Sweet – the result is nothing less than magical.

“We enjoy golf, and we enjoy Pottawatomie,” he said.

“The course is unique; the club house is unique; and it’s a good group of people down here. What more could you want out of life?”

“We always shop here first and then go to the grocery store,” Jim Pohorsky said.

“We like to shop local. You want it from across the street, not across the country.”

This year marks the 20th year of the Batavia Farmers’ Market, which is run by the Batavia MainStreet organization. The market opened for the season June 6, and it will continue from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday through Oct. 17 on North River Street in downtown Batavia.

The Pohorskys have been attending the Batavia Farmers’ Market for 15 years, including back when it was held on Water Street in downtown Batavia. This is the second summer of the Batavia Farmers’ Market being on North River Street after streetscape improvements on that street.

This summer’s market is sporting new activities. For example, Batavia MainStreet has invited Batavia United Way to bring kids’ activities to the market.

“It gives people something else to do down here,” Batavia MainStreet Executive Director Jamie Saam said.

In addition, Gaetano DiBenedetto, executive chef of Gaetano’s Batavia, at the corner of North River and East Wilson streets, recently put on a cooking demonstration at the market. Last year, he bought items at the market and did a cooking demonstration with them, Saam said.

“He really wants to show

that farm-to-table concept,” Saam said. “People are really into that whole live local concept.”

The market features predominantly Kane County vendors, such as Maple Parkbased Stojan’s Vegetables and Geneva-based The Sugar Path.

Saam said that a few years back, the farmers market committee – which is comprised of

local farmers and other live-local-minded contributors – decided to revamp the market application to focus on locally grown, prepared and created items.

“People want to be able to walk downtown, purchase their vegetables and get to know the people who are growing their fruits and vegetables,” Saam said.

This is the second year Rustic Road Farm, on Brundige Road near Elburn, has been involved with the Batavia Farmers’ Market. Rustic Road sells mostly vegetables, honey and eggs at the market.

Marc Bernard, who owns Rustic Road with his husband, Luis, said their presence at Batavia Farmers’ Market has helped bring more people to their farm. Bernard also said he enjoys talking to customers at the market about what they

do.

“To have people interested in what you do is fantastic,” Bernard said. “We raise everything organic. We sell what we grow. We don’t buy it from someplace else.”

The number of vendors participating in the market has increased over the years, Saam said. This year’s farmers market features between 20 to 35 vendors, depending on the week, she said.

“The market has transformed into not only a place to shop for your local veggies, cheese, or soap for the week, but into a familiar Saturday morning gathering place for many in the community,” Saam said.

She performed “Live Out Loud” from the musical “A Little Princess.”

“We are thrilled! We are from Geneva and have attended Geneva’s Got Talent every year, and it is so amazing that Lilly competed and won,” her mother, Debra Nowak, said in the release.

Lilly Nowak recently completed sixth grade at Geneva Middle School South and is enrolled in voice and guitar

classes at Sounds Like Music.

On Sunday, Lilly accompanied Sounds Like Music on its float in the Geneva Swedish Days parade. She is passionate about her family, friends and theater, the release stated.

Geneva’s Got Talent started with contestants auditioning May 16. The semifinalists were chosen and went on to perform June 24 on the Swedish Days Central Stage.

Judges’ votes, combined with Facebook votes, carried the following 10 contestants to the finals: Aliya Starks, DDA Dancers, Dina Bach, Emily Schmid, Emma Pettyjohn, Fire the Canon, Future Rockettes, Kayla Tejero, Lilly Nowak and Megan Styrna.

Nonprofit Going on groups brace for i t o a n c ? a impact of state V budget impasse Officials: Effects to worsen as standoff continues

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com The Illinois state budget impasse Wednesday continued with little fanfare in Kane County, but local officials said its impact will worsen the longer it lasts.

Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Illinois General Assembly did not reach consensus on a budget before the start of the state’s latest fiscal year Wednesday.

Rauner has repeated in multiple statements this summer that he wants to create a balanced state budget.

He vetoed multiple appropriation bills during the last week of June and wrote the budget will required shared sacrifice.

Some services, such as Kane County courts, will continue to operate normally with or without a budget from Springfield.

Municipalities, such as the city of Batavia, will use reserves to offset any pending state funding.

“The cities, at least for the immediate future, wont be impacted,” Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said.

While essential operations will remain open, residents served by nonprofit groups, such as the Association for Individual Development, will be among the first affected by the budget absence.

“We can’t spend money we don’t have, that’s for sure,” said Lynn O’Shea, the association’s president and CEO. “We’re looking at op-

tions now, and hopefully we don’t have to put them into effect.”

About 75 percent of the association’s revenues come from state Medicaid and grants.

Without an approved budget, there is at least $889,000 in grant funding in jeopardy, O’Shea said.

The grants are needed to help serve 800 people in various programs offered by the association, O’Shea said.

The group serves more than 5,000 people every year with developmental disabilities and mental health needs throughout the Fox Valley area.

The association will continue to provide the grant-supported services for about two weeks in July, but after that time period might have to consider discontinuing programming if a state budget isn’t approved.

“It doesn’t seem reasonable to cut services to those that can’t help themselves,” O’Shea said.

In agreement with O’Shea is Gil Fonger, president and CEO of Marklund.

The nonprofit agency serves those with serious and profound developmental disabilities.

Marklund is prepared for a short-term impasse, but it could be serious if it continues for several months, Fonger said.

About 80 percent of Marklund’s funding comes from the state, and 90 cents out of every dollar received goes directly to caring for more than 160 people, Fonger said.

“It’s a frustrating circumstance for all of us,” Fonger said. “It would be nice to get to the place where we can get to a solution.”

BATAVIA – Batavia firefighters put out a small garage fire Wednesday afternoon at 814 N. Forest Ave., according to a news release. Officials said it was caused by ashes from a fire pit.

Firefighters found a small fire inside the garage and extinguished it in just less than an hour. It was contained to the garage area, with minor smoke inside the house, officials said.

The total loss was $5,000 damage to the structure and $1,000 to the contents, officials said. There were no injuries.

The fire was considered accidental, caused by fire pit ashes discarded near a garbage container in the garage, according to the release.

Banquet facility sues over golf course sale City of Aurora sold Fox Valley Golf Club for senior housing

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – A banquet facility in North Aurora, which operates next to the Fox Valley Golf Club, is suing the city of Aurora regarding the sale of the 18-hole golf course.

The city of Aurora, which owned and operated the golf club at 2500 N. Route 25 in North Aurora, in March agreed to sell the Fox Valley Golf Club to Michigan-based Odawa Development LLC for $5 million.

Odawa has plans to develop senior housing on the land, according to the lawsuit.

RTW Fox Valley, which does business as Fox Valley Events of Elegance and Chateau on the Green, on June 26 filed a lawsuit against the city of Aurora. Odawa is named as an “indispensable defendant” in the suit. A case management conference on the suit is set for Oct. 13.

Aurora city spokesman Dan Ferrelli said the city has not yet been served with the suit and could not comment on it.

RTW Fox Valley operates the Fox Valley Country Club next to the golf course. According to the suit, RTW Fox Valley has the right of first refusal to match any offer to buy the golf course.

“This right of first refusal does not expire and is binding on purchasers even if the golf course were sold,” the suit stated.

The suit stated the proposed purchase price of $5 million exceeds the appraisals conducted by or on behalf of Aurora on the property.

RTW took over the lease for the facility about eight years ago, and there are 24 years left on the lease, said attorney Ted Meyers, of St. Charles firm Meyers and Flowers LLC, which filed the complaint.

Meyers said RTW put in a considerable amount of capital expenses to improve the facility.

“It was always on the premise that the [land] was going to be a golf course,” Meyers said.

The suit references the lease, and RTW has the right to renovate, improve and enlarge its facilities and landscaping, as long as it does not “restrict the use or design of the golf course.”

“What if there’s no golf course, and they want to put houses in?” Meyers asked.

“How much of a buffer of landscaping should we be allowed to do? Ten acres? Twenty acres? We bought this with this idea we could keep this kind of idyllic green setting, and now if they take that away, what’s our right? Isn’t that something important you would think everybody needs to know?”

As part of the suit, RTW is asking the court to determine its rights.

Chronic eye-watering and irritation of the outer portion of the eyeball (cornea) may be due to inward-turning eyelashes. Abnormally positioned eyelashes can result from an eye infection, inflammation (swelling) of the eyelid, autoimmune conditions, and trauma. This misdirection of the eyelashes, a condition known as “trichiasis,” results in the errant eyelashes brushing against the eyeball. Left untreated, trichiasis may lead to corneal ulceration, which is a potentially serious concern that can lead to loss of eyesight in the affected eye. When there are multiple lashes growing toward the eye, the ophthalmologist may recommend surgery to have them removed permanently. If so, “ablation” utilizes radio frequencies or lasers to remove the offending lashes.

P.S. Some cases of trichiasis are caused by “epiblepharon,” an extra horizontal fold of skin that causes inversion of the eyelashes against the cornea.

St. Charles North graduate helps create interactive game

By KATIE KULL kkull@shawmedia.com The team of seven Bradley University students in a capstone class were given three elements: a monkey, a bear and Type 2 diabetes. Their challenge was to create a mobile game that incorporates all three.

John Medwick, a St. Charles North graduate, was one of the students up to the task.

Medwick and his classmates created Coco’s Cove, an interactive game that uses a monkey, Coco, and his adventures in the jungle to show the effects of blood sugar im-

balances in those with Type 2 diabetes.

“It’s a little similar to Angry Birds [a popular mobile game]. … The player has a target to go to meals with a recommended amount of carbohydrates,” Medwick said. “As it goes, it gets more and more difficult because there’s negative foods and negative carb choices.”

The team of students had about three months to create the mobile game. Medwick specialized in adding assets like music and art, said Monica McGill, associate professor and game design lead.

To make sure the game was as medically accurate as

possible, the team consulted a registered nurse to give ideas for foods with realistic levels of carbohydrates, McGill said.

Above all, they wanted to make sure the game was user-friendly and fun to play.

“The fact that it is about Type 2 diabetes is great,” Medwick said. “But it’s not screaming it, which is nice, as well.”

The game is available on the Google play store for 99 cents.

Medwick said he hopes it will be in the Apple Store soon.

“I think we hit exactly what we wanted to do. We basically created a game that anyone can pick up and play,” McGill said.

Batavia man charged with home invasion, aggravated battery

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A Batavia man is facing home invasion and aggravated battery charges after a break-in early Wednesday morning in Batavia.

Jose E. Garcia, 31, of the 700 block of Walnut Street, has been charged with one felony count of home invasion and one felony count of aggravated battery. As of W e d n e s d a y Jose E. Garcia afternoon, he still was being held in the Kane County Jail. His bond has not yet been set.

At 3 a.m. Wednesday, the victim called Batavia police, saying he was being attacked

by Garcia, a friend of the vic-

tim. The victim also was at an address in the 700 block of Walnut Street. They did not live at the same address, police said.

According to police, Garcia forced his way into the victim’s residence, where a physical fight ensued over personal matters. The victim, who received non-life-threatening injuries, was taken to Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva for treatment.

“They knew each other, and it got heated,” Batavia Police Detective Kevin Bretz said.

Garcia still was at the scene when police arrived, Bretz said. He was arrested without incident.

If convicted of the home invasion charge, Garcia could face between six and 30 years in prison, police said. He could face between one and three years in prison if convicted of the aggravated battery charge, police said.

Forest Preserve District to hold ‘Senior Stroll’

BATAVIA – The Forest Preserve District of Kane County invites seniors to its monthly “Senior Stroll” program today.

On the first Thursday of each month, naturalists lead a leisurely walk through a Kane County forest preserve and share ecology highlights along the way.

The strolls last about an hour, with social time and refreshments after the walk.

Today’s “Senior Stroll” will be from 10 a.m. to noon at Dick Young Forest Preserve, 39W115 Main St., Batavia. All seniors are welcome. Registration is not required for this program.

I’m feeling a bit red, white and blue Nothing says summer quite like the Fourth of July. With the holiday this weekend, a majority of Americans are busy hitting the local supermarkets to get July 4 essentials to outshine their neighbors and grill the perfect burgers and hot dogs this Saturday.

After all, there is no better way to celebrate America’s birthday other than by hanging around with family and friends while eating. Chowing down on food right off the grill, eating generous amounts of pasta salad and enjoying a slice of gooey apple pie pretty much explains why the Fourth of July is such a blissful, favorite holiday.

Additionally, for whatever reason, I always get a kick out of watching the annual Nathan’s International Hot Dog Eating Contest on TV. Only once a year can you watch a group of people scarf down 60 hot dogs in solely 10 minutes, because that is the American dream right there.

And while all of the above things are great, I think my favorite part about July 4 is that I can wear an obnoxious amount of American flag-themed clothes and accessories without looking like an idiot. Am I the only one? I get to break out my red, white and blue shirt with “America” printed in bold letters and enough jewelry to match. Later in the evening, I usually get a few glow sticks to run around with, too, which only completes my outfit to perfection.

I cannot overlook the highlight of the day, and that is oohing with astonishment at an illumining color explosion of fireworks. When I was younger, I can clearly remember the rush of joy I got from just watching the bright bursts of exploding colors outside my grandma’s house. My grandmother used to live right by

I still can recall going to my grandma’s house and sitting outside her front yard as the fireworks show began. There’s nothing quite like feeling the bang of each firework against your chest.

For the past several years, my friends and I always got together to celebrate July 4.

Later on, we’d watch Batavia’s fireworks extravaganza across from Batavia High School.

However, things are a bit different this year. I’m part of the cluster of people who don’t have the Fourth of July off from work.

I’m not complaining however, because I get to witness the beauty of two people celebrating their marriage. As mentioned in earlier columns, I’m a waitress at a banquet hall.

Sure, I won’t actually be a guest at the wedding reception, but I feel like serving and cleaning up after everyone is basically like being a guest in an odd way. I get paid for being there, so who’s really winning here?

Me. And who knows, maybe I’ll have enough time after work to catch a firework or two somewhere. If not, that’s alright.

Like the unofficial Cubs motto, there’s always next year.

Christie ought to tell it as it is on all issues BLOOMBERG VIEW Chris Christie made a name for himself as the quintessential New Jersey tough guy: a loud, brash, don’t-take-nuthin’-from-nobody bruiser who, beneath it all, has a deep (and mostly unrequited) love of Bruce Springsteen.

In his first term as governor, he became a YouTube star by delivering tongue-lashings to critics, leading some Republicans to urge him to enter the 2012 presidential race. He declined, and the Christie boomlet soon petered out.

But his presidential ambitions didn’t.

On Tuesday, Christie announced he will run for the White House on a platform of “telling it like it is.” If he follows through on that promise, voters will finally learn what really happened at the George Washington Bridge

in 2013.

They’ll also learn why Christie flip-flopped on the Common Core education standards that he had long supported, why the credit rating agencies have repeatedly downgraded New Jersey’s bonds, why the governor who wants to keep Social Security solvent has skipped out on the state’s pension bills, and why he has a penchant for accepting expensive gifts (including from people who have business before the state).

Christie’s candor will come with limits, of course. But that doesn’t mean his candidacy is without promise. Christie is the rare would-be president touting his ability to cooperate with the other party.

To his credit, Christie has backed up his promise of candor with an unusually specific plan to rein in

Social Security spending -- a topic that most candidates run from. Candor also requires Christie to level with voters about climate change.

Hurricane Sandy’s devastating impact on his state puts him in a strong position to explain the dangers of rising sea levels and warming oceans to skeptical Republican audiences.

Christie’s plain-spoken persona may make him the best retail politician in the field. He’s pinning his hopes on a strong showing in New Hampshire, but can Christie sell in Hanover what he can’t sell in Hackensack?

Currently, another candidate who relishes a schoolyard fight almost as much as Christie is polling well in New Hampshire.

This could get interesting – and ugly. America, you got a problem with that?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Batavia resident pens first novel ‘The Fifth Floor’ was published in March

Oleszek: Yes. I think that “The Fifth Floor” is an important story because it deals with mental health issues.

Unfortunately, there is such a stigma attached to mental health issues.

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – After being a longtime teacher in Naperville, Batavia resident Julie Oleszek resigned to pen her first novel, “The Fifth Floor,” a fictionalized version of her formative years.

“The Fifth Floor,” which revolves around 7-year-old Anna growing up in 1970s suburban Chicago, was published in March and is available at her website at www.julieoleszek.com or at retailers such as Townhouse Books, 105 North 2nd Ave., St. Charles. Oleszek will be part of the “Catch a Bunch of Authors Fair” on Sept. 12 at the Santori Public Library, 101 S. River St., Aurora.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Oleszek about her novel.

Eric Schelkopf: I understand that “The Fifth Floor” is a fictionalized version of your youth from growing up in Woodridge.

Julie Oleszek: It is. It is a true-to-life story, but it’s fiction because it’s very embellished. And even though it’s written in the 1970s, I made it very relevant to today.

Schelkopf: What drove you to want to write this novel?

Oleszek: I originally wanted to write the book because I had suffered a childhood trauma that went undetected for many years. Basically, I felt like life was hopeless.

Anna’s story is very similar, but like I said, very embellished. She goes through a childhood trauma that many kids experience. It goes undetected, and because of that, it has repercussions.

Anna stops eating at the age of 17.

Finally, her mother steps in to try to help her and basically save her life.

Schelkopf: Do you think that your novel might help people share their problems with other people? Is that your ultimate goal?

Oleszek: My hope is that readers from all walks of life are presented with a better understanding of childhood trauma and the lasting effect it has.

“The Fifth Floor” is a fictionalized version of Batavia resident Julie Oleszek’s youth. She grew up in Woodridge.

Schelkopf: Was it an easy process in sitting down to write the book?

Oleszek: As I was writing the novel, there were many times where I was crying with the characters and laughing with the characters. When I first started writing the book, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to put it out there because of the stigma.

But I really felt that the book grew and it changed me. I started saying to myself, ‘So what that I went through this childhood trauma? It’s OK to experience different things.’

Schelkopf: So, you had an eating disorder?

Oleszek: I did not. When you are reading the book on a surface level, it does look like that Anna has an eating disorder.

But as the reader begins to get deeper into the book, they realize that it is not that at all.

It’s actually not about an eating disorder at all. It’s about this childhood trauma. With no one to talk to, she suffers internally by herself.

Schelkopf: You grew up in a large family, similar to Anna’s character in “The Fifth Floor.”

Oleszek: I did. I grew up the ninth child of 10, and in the novel, Anna is the ninth of 10 children as well.

I may have come from a large family with a lot of commotion and busy schedules, but that’s also what families have today. They could have one child, but they are all over the place. And things do get overlooked. Being a teacher of 20 years, I’ve seen that happen over and over again.

Schelkopf: So, you also had a childhood trauma?

Oleszek: Yes. There was a death in my family, and that was the childhood trauma. Personally, I had perceived that trauma as more than it was, more of my fault than it was, and this person dying.

Schelkopf: In writing this book, did you

Flagstone serves up bar fare in industrial atmosphere Stomachs grumbling from a manic Monday work day, my dining companions and I headed toward Flagstone: Crafts and Cocktails in Geneva, just as some summer showers began to sprinkle.

Opening only a few hours earlier at 11 a.m., the restaurant was at a slow speed at this particular time of day.

A few diners sat with food and drinks at the bar, while a family sat with children at a table, their strollers lining the storefront outside.

The industrial atmosphere of the restaurant and bar is complemented by high ceilings, exposed ductwork and an open brick wall behind the sleek, darkly colored bar.

The walls and ceiling also were painted a dark color, with dimly-lit metal accent lights and hand-painted, ale-centered artwork popping against the monotone walls.

Including the bar, there was a vast seating area for diners that made the space feel open. And, of course, sports were playing on the various big-screen TVs.

Fox Valley Repertory’s ‘The Bikinis’ resurrects ’60s pop music

This breezy musical tribute, by Ray Roderick and James Hindman, features a female quartet taking a nostalgic song-and-dance trip by way of pop songs from the 1960s. “The Bikinis” falls in the same vein as “Forever Plaid,” Stuart Ross’s popular musical revue featuring close-harmony “guy groups” from the ’50s.

Staged by Fox Valley Repertory at Pheasant Run Resort, the fictional “Bikinis” has a talented cast of vocalists: Kyrie Anderson, as Barbara; Alexandra Gonzalez as Annie; Kristine Burdi as Karla; and Colette Todd as Jodi.

Kyle Donahue serves as director and choreographer.

obligatory “Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” as well as “Chapel of Love,” “Mama Said,” “I Will Survive” and “Heat Wave,” among others. If you’re a fan of that era, chances are its music will ring a few bells.

Less thrilling, however, is the wobbly script around which these oldies

are positioned. The storyline is paper thin and the dialogue forced. Then again, with jukebox musicals such as this an intricate plot may be a bonus rather than a requirement.

Here’s the premise: a girl group calling themselves The Bikinis has come up with a local one-hit wonder during the late ’60s. Their song, “In My Bikini,” was created by Roderick and Joseph Baker.

Twenty years have passed and the middle-aged singers now temporarily regroup to raise money to help occupants at a trailer park known as Sandy Shores Mobile Home Beach Resort keep their place of residence secure in the face of mounting pressure from a condominium developer.

The reconstituted Bikinis – Barbara and childhood friends, sisters Jodie and Annie and their cousin Karla – share secrets about how they all dated the same lifeguard, why they

no longer would consider donning a bikini and how they dreamed about recording a hit song.

Things liven up late in Act I as the quartet successfully parodies a Frankie Avalon-and-Annette Funicello beach party movie and also presents a 1960s dance craze medley that included interaction between the audience and the cast during a Twist number.

In Act II, the time frame advances to the 1970s and early ’80s and the theme turns to Flower Power-fueled protest songs, the impact of Vietnam, the rise in the feminist movement and the buzz caused by disco.

Crowd-pleasers heard include “Dedicated to the One I Love,” “Simple Song of Freedom,” “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)” and “Last Dance.”

Jeffrey Poindexter directs the music. Kimberly G. Morris designed the cast’s colorful floral dresses and beach attire.

GOING THE DISTANCE Yager embraces taxing club training regimen, hits breakthrough time

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@kcchronicle.com Alexis Yager would much rather travel her long distances in the water, but this summer’s long bus trips to and from club practices finally paid off when she touched the wall at last month’s Swim Pink Invitational at the University of Iowa.

The Batavia native and soonto-be Rosary junior finished her 200-meter breaststroke race eight hundredths of a second ahead of the qualifying time for the 2016 Olympic Trials next summer in Omaha, Nebraska.

But as time has passed and Yager has had time to think about her accomplishment, her mind drifts back to those long bus rides to and from practices.

“It just shows that everything we did was worth it,” Yager said.

“Those long bus rides ... at the time weren’t always something you looked forward to doing, but they really paid off.”

Yager, 16, and her club team, Aurora-based Academy Bullets, take a 40-minute trip to Addison on Mondays and Wednesdays for practices, and head to the University of Illinois-Chicago, which is well over an hour trip each way, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The reason for traveling those distances is st swim in long-course pools. The lap lengths are longer, which can help build stamina for long-distance races.

After the UIC practices, Tuesdays and Thursdays provide for double practices, as the team will then head to Marmion for night workouts.

Friday and Saturday practices also take place at Marmion.

“It’s a lot of traveling ... that’s for sure,” Yager said. “I set qualifying for the trials as a goal of mine, so when you love the sport like I do, you’re not always going to like some of the things you have to do to be successful.”

Although some club teams get to practice in a long-course pool every day, which Yager said can be a disadvantage, she also thinks the team has responded very well only having the limited time it does.

I heard my teammates getting louder and louder. I thought to myself, ‘I must be pretty close,’ so I just went for it,” Yager said.

Yager said. “Most teams have that advantage, but we work with what we can and we have gotten used to everything that we do.”

But with the NCSA Junior National Meet at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) looming at the end of July and stretching into the beginning of August, Yager thought her chance to qualify would have come then, and not that early in the summer.

As her surreal moment started to become reality in Iowa, Yager couldn’t help but hear her teammates screaming as she got closer and closer to the wall, allowing her to believe she must have been close to the time she needed. She finished the race in 2:34.91, eight hundreths of a second clear of the qualifying standard.

“It was a weird sort of race,” Yag-

er said. “We hadn’t really rested up for this meet, so I definitely wasn’t expecting to get the time. I heard my teammates getting louder and louder. I thought to myself, ‘I must be pretty close,’ so I just went for it.”

Yager said when she touched the wall, as any swimmer does, her eyes immediately shot to the board flashing her time.

“Did I get it?” was the first thing that went through her head, but as fate would have it, eight hundredths of a second faster is just as good a time as any, allowing her to head to Omaha for the Olympic Trials, which will take place from June 26 to July 3, 2016.

The trials will decide the team of American swimmers that will represent the U.S. in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, later that summer.

As far as the outlook for the rest of this summer and into next year’s high school swimming season, Yager said she is unclear exactly how she will be racing. She expects her club coach, Todd Capen, and Rosary swimming coach and Bullets executive, Bill Schalz, to work together to find the correct races and training regimen for her high school season to best prepare her for her future.

“We haven’t talked about it too much yet,” said Yager, who won the IHSA 200-yard individual medley state title as a sophomore.

“I know they both know what they are doing and will talk and get together to help me be as successful as I can. It’s a big accomplishment for me and I’m excited moving forward to the school year, and especially for this opportunity next summer.”

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North will host the Trickey-Wright quarterback-receiver camp on July 18-19 at the high school. The camp is named after founder Jeff Trickey and former Green Bay Packers quarterback Randy Wright.

Wright spent six years in the National Football League, including three seasons as the Packers’ starting QB. He is also a Wisconsin graduate, and led the Badgers to their first ever bowl victory.

Trickey has over 42 years of coaching of experience with camps and coaching offensive skill players. He was inducted in the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2009.

The camp is one of the 25 Trickey-Wright camps held from March through July throughout the United States and only one of two in Illinois.

Florida, Alabama and Georgia, where alligators, water moccasins and snapping turtles aren’t always eager to share their home with a diver.

“There’s really zero visibility on the bottom of a pond or lake,” said Johnson, who added fertilizer and chemicals from the golf course further cloud the water in which he dives. “It’s just muck down there. It’s like quick sand. A few courses have a pool-like liner and sand on the bottom so the visibility is a bit better.”

As CEO, Jessica Johnson has come up with what her husband called a “secret chemical concoction” to clean golf balls that have been collected. The competition for contracts with golf courses is fierce. Several companies remained tight lipped when contacted and Johnson said no one wants to lose out on a good location once it’s been claimed.

“It’s a cut-throat business,” Mike Johnson said. “You’ve got to go outwork everyone. I will answer calls at 3 a.m. if a course is interested in contracting us.”

At Joliet-based Budget Golf,

about two percent of golf ball sales come from recycled balls.

Standard retail price for a dozen of the most played golf ball on the PGA Tour, the Titleist Pro V1, is $47.99. A recycled golf ball is a cheaper alternative for the recreational player that simply needs a ball to play a round.

“The market is very good for used balls,” said PGA professional Jim Kollereb, who is the head of Budget’s corporate sales and outings. “If you aren’t an efficient player and don’t want to go out and lose a $5 Pro V, this is a good alternative.”

While divers comb through muddy waters surrounded by potentially dangerous creatures, buyers also have a risk with a recycled golf balls purchase.

“It is a fluent market,” Kollereb said. “It is a buyer beware purchase because these aren’t first-rate quality balls.

A company has gone out and found them and cleaned them up the best they could.”

Don’t expect any company to share their best locations or cleaning techniques, however.

Mike Johnson spends most of his day underwater.

When he answered a dare from his wife, Jessica Johnson, five years ago to dive into a pond on a golf course, the family’s entrepreneurial spirit kicked in. The Johnsons had owned laundromats and always ran their own business.

But when Mike Johnson started cold calling golf courses to ask permission to collect golf balls from the bottom of their ponds and lakes, he found a whole new career as president of Golf Balls By JJ. “My wife is really the mastermind of the whole business,” said Mike Johnson, a certified scuba diver whose business is based in Florida. “Five years ago, we were at a friend’s house.

He lives off the 18th hole of a golf course. She dared me to jump into the water hazard.

So, I did and I came up with a bunch of golf balls. Her first thought was, ‘We should sell those.’ “ Today, Johnson said business is “booming.” Golf Balls By JJ are for sale at Sears, Play It Again Sports, Overstock.com, eBay, Amazon and on its own web site, www.golfballsbyjj.com Golf Balls By JJ has five to 10 regular divers that work as independent contractors to retrieve golf balls. It’s a long day of work for a diver who has to navigate the various obstacles that lay on the bottom of a pond or lake in near darkness.

Divers arrive at a golf course around 7 a.m. They only work during the day and are paid around eight cents per ball. At night, Johnson said it would be impossible to see. Golf Balls By JJ doesn’t disclose the courses with which it has contracts.

Payment to the course varies.

There are some that accept anywhere between five and 12 cents per ball, and others where a contract could be a few thousand dollars per year.

In addition, Brink has corresponded with NIU coach Rod Carey and will donate his autographed 1951 NFL title football and championship ring to his alma mater. Both will be displayed in the Hall of Champions between the Yordon and Chessick centers.

Brink currently resides in Redding, Calif. His birthday is Sept. 12.

Maybe at halftime of the NIU-Murray State game, the Huskie Stadium faithful can stand, look west, and wish one of NIU’s all-time finest a glorious 92nd.

‘GOD STILL WANTS ME HERE FOR A REASON’ Air Force pilot rediscovers competitive mindset after losing leg

By JACOB FELDMAN The Washington Post Tom Wise kneeled in his bedroom for three hours, praying more intensely than he ever had before.

“Dear God, I hope you save her life,” he prayed. “If there is anything left in her life, she will make it worth it.”

Tom’s son, David, had just returned from a skiing competition in Europe when he started getting texts with snippets of information about his sister: Something happened to Christy. It’s her leg – some sort of accident. I don’t know how bad.

His sister, Jessica, sent those texts.

She had been at a dinner with friends in Las Vegas when an unknown number from Florida called. And then called again. The voice on the other end was coming from an ambulance.

Jessica boarded a plane to Florida that night to be with her twin sister.

Christy, meanwhile, was in the back of the ambulance, unsure whether she would keep her leg – or whether she would live.

Less than three months later, David watched his sister compete in track and field, carrying her prosthetic leg between events.

Her leg was amputated above the knee in April, so Christy was one of the most recently injured athletes of the 270 wounded service people participating at the 2015 Department of Defense Wounded Warrior Games, which ended Sunday in Quantico, Virginia.

“I should not be here today, but lots of miracles happened,” said Christy, who also competed in swimming and cycling during the 10-day event. “I guess God still wants me here for a reason.”

Christy, a captain in the Air Force, suffered the injury while lying on her back, staring at the stars. She remembers what it felt like when she jumped into the water near Shalimar, Florida, on April 11, her sweatshirt soaking up the ocean water.

Moments earlier she had been on her paddleboard, next to her boyfriend, Tim Wiser, when she noticed three green lights speeding toward her. She flashed her headlamp in their direction, fully expecting the boat to turn left or right. It did not.

After the boat struck her, Christy managed to push off it and swim down as

U.S. Air Force Capt. Christy Wise recently competed in the Department of Defense Warrior Games in Quantico, Virginia. fast as she could. That meant the boat’s propeller only caught her right leg, cutting it nearly clean off near the knee.

Wiser, also in the Air Force, managed to use his shirt as a makeshift tourniquet while a nearby fishing boat picked the two up and took them to shore. With an injury like Wise’s, you can bleed out in three to five minutes, and she was close.

“Swimming down saved my life,” she said. “And definitely Tim, he saved my life.”

David did not begin to grasp the extent of his sister’s injuries until the next morning.

“I realized I was lucky to have a sister still,” he said.

When they were young, David and Christy used to climb a tree in their back yard, going as high as they could and then jumping down onto their family’s trampoline. The two of them and Jessica competed in board games, wrestling matches and on the ski slopes.

They all turned out to be good skiers.

Christy and Jessica skied in college – Christy at the Air Force Academy, on her way to flying HC-130 search and

rescue planes.

But David, the youngest, became the best skier. He won gold in the men’s halfpipe at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, with his sisters cheering him on.

After the accident, he wondered whether the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, could give him another chance to ski with Christy.

But a lot needs to happen before then.

Christy began rehabbing soon after her injury, starting with push-ups in the hospital. She could not do much else while waiting for her leg to heal, so she worked out twice a day, joking with David that she now knows what it’s like to be a professional athlete.

In the gym one day, another amputee told her about the Department of Defense Warrior Games. Wise said she appreciated the opportunity to compete. It gave her something to work toward over the past several weeks and let her meet other injured airmen.

Now her next target is returning to Air Force duty. Wise flew six rescue

missions in Afghanistan in 2012 and was scheduled to be redeployed this December. Her doctors said she might be able to fly again within a year. Wise wants to do it in four months.

She has talked to David about the possibility of paralympic skiing. The two used to work on their balance by kicking off a ski and going down the hill on one leg. But for now, that goal is secondary.

At her boyfriend’s suggestion, Christy decided to start a foundation.

For nearly a decade, Jessica has traveled to Haiti each year with Children of the Nations to help impoverished children, including several who were injured in the 2010 earthquake and now need larger prosthetic legs as they continue to grow.

So Christy is helping that cause, starting with a Memorial Day event she attended in Shalimar, the town where she was injured.

“It’s a little overwhelming,” she said.

“Sometimes I sit back and think, I’m this 28-year-old pilot. I was flying and doing whatever. Now I’m here at the Warrior Games and researching 501(c)’s and talking to you.”

Learning ABCDEs can help detect melanoma Dear Doctor K: My aunt developed melanoma, and I hear that this cancer can run in families.

What should I look for when I examine my skin for melanoma?

Dear Reader: Skin cancers are the most common cancers in the United States, and skin checks are an important way to identify them. You asked about the deadliest type of skin cancer, melanoma.

My Harvard Medical School colleague, dermatologist Dr. Kenneth Arndt, says that more than half of melanomas are identified by patients. That’s important because more than 90 percent of cases can be cured with early detection and treatment.

Skin carries out many functions that help maintain health.

It forms a defensive barrier, protecting inner organs from foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses. It helps control body temperature. Finally, it uses the sun’s energy to make vitamin D, which is essential to many bodily functions.

Skin cancers form in the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin. Cells called melanocytes, produce a dark pigment called melanin. This pigment colors skin and helps protect against the sun’s

ultraviolet rays. Melanoma begins in the melanocytes.

Often, these melanocytes are part of a pigmented spot on the skin called a mole (the medical term is “nevus”) that is not cancerous. However, the melanocytes in the nevus can start to turn cancerous. That changes the appearance of the pigmented spot on the skin. Without early detection and treatment, melanoma can spread throughout the body, and sometimes is fatal.

You can help to detect early skin changes by taking a few minutes each month to inspect your skin. Melanoma has several distinguishing features.

When you examine your skin, check for the following “ABCDEs.” • Asymmetry. Each half of the mole looks different than the other.

• Border irregularity. The borders are irregular, ragged or blurry.

• Color. The color is unusual --

for example, a mole that contains various shades of tan, brown, blue or black.

• Diameter. The width of the mole is the size of a pencil eraser or larger.

• Evolving. The mole has evolved, enlarged or changed in some way.

Sores that crust, bleed and itch are also suspect.

If the doctor suspects melanoma, he or she may take a biopsy.

This entails removing part or all of the growth and examining it under a microscope to determine whether it’s cancer.

Sometimes people inherit a vulnerability to developing melanoma; about 10 percent of melanomas have such a genetic basis. If you inherit certain characteristics, you also are at higher risk for melanoma: red or blond hair color, lots of freckles, light eye color (green, hazel, blue), and fair (lightly pigmented) skin. Also very important is frequent and intense exposure to sunlight.

What’s worse: driving while high on marijuana or driving while drunk? – Rosa, Nogales, Arizona Dear Rosa: That’s like asking whether it’s better to lose an arm or a leg.

Both losses are serious.

The same is true for driving under the influence of alcohol or any other drug.

According to the American Council for Drug Education, evidence now shows that marijuana affects a person’s ability to drive, and that people high are involved in an unusually high percentage of traffic accidents and fatalities.

Tests conducted in mechanical and electronic driving simulators show that marijuana smoking impairs driving skills even in those who do not believe they are high. A study conducted in California found that at least 16 percent of drivers arrested for impaired driving showed clear evidence of recent marijuana use.

Find a new boyfriend, or at least STOP riding with your friend when he is high on any type of drug. His chances of being involved in an accident are uncomfortably good.

Please don’t let yourself become a traffic statistic.

However, to do that, West will have to lead clubs twice through dummy’s king. So, at trick one, East must discourage by dropping his heart two. Then, as you can see, if West shifts to the club three, the defenders can triumph.

East wins with his club jack and plays a low heart to his partner’s queen. Then another club lead gives East-West the first five tricks.

A look at home prices in 20 cities

By MICHELLE JAMRISKO Bloomberg News WASHINGTON – Home prices in 20 cities rose at a slower pace than projected in April, indicating the market was experiencing uneven gains as it entered the busier selling season.

The S&P/Case-Shiller index of property values increased 4.9 percent from April 2014 after climbing 5 percent in the year ended in March, the group said from New York.

The median estimate of 31 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for a 5.5 percent advance. Nationally, prices rose 4.2 percent.

A pickup in sales as the job market improves and younger Americans start venturing out on their own means gains in home prices will probably accelerate as demand outstrips supply.

“The housing sector is generally on an upswing,” said Tom Simons, an economist at Jefferies in New York, whose forecast for a 5 percent increase was among the closest in the Bloomberg survey. “The thing that has been supporting home prices for the recent part of the recovery has been low inventories, and now it seems demand is starting to pick up as well. That should help further support the case for somewhat higher prices.”

Economists’ estimates in the Bloomberg survey ranged from gains of 4.7 percent to 5.8 percent. The S&P/Case-Shiller index is based on a three-month average, which means the April figure also was influenced by transactions in March and February. Home prices in the 20city index adjusted for seasonal variations increased 0.3 percent

All 20 cities in the index showed a year-over-year gain, led by a 10.3 percent increase in Denver. Prices climbed 10 percent in San Francisco.

The price increases decelerated in 11 cities in April from the same time in 2014.

The year-over-year gauge, based on records dating back to 2001, provides better indications of trends in prices, the group has said. The panel includes Karl Case and Robert Shiller, the economists who created the index.

Measured against a month

earlier, property prices rose in 11 cities in April, according to the seasonally adjusted data.

They jumped 1 percent in Minneapolis. The biggest decrease was in Cleveland, where they fell 0.5 percent. Values were little changed in Tampa.

A dearth of supply is keeping prices in most areas rising as more Americans consider home purchases. While the number of previously owned homes for sale rose 1.8 percent in May to 2.3 million, at the current sales pace, it would take 5.1 months to sell those houses, National Association of Realtors data show.

That’s down from 5.2 months at the end of the prior month.

gence in wage growth are luring buyers to the market. Payrolls rose by 280,000 in May, the biggest increase in five months, and the unemployment rate edged up to 5.5 percent from 5.4 percent in April as more workers joined the labor force.

So far this year, job gains have averaged 217,400 a month after 259,670 in 2014.

The Labor Department is set to report June labor-market figures on July 2. Employers added 230,000 jobs in June, according to the Bloomberg survey median.

Some indicators have shown pay growth is strengthening.

Private wages, which exclude government workers, rose at the fastest year-over-year pace since 2008, according to the Labor Department’s April 30 report on employment costs.

The agency’s monthly employment report showed a more moderate 2.3 percent gain in average hourly earnings in May from a year earlier. While that was the strongest since August 2013, it’s still close to the 2 percent average since the start of the expansion.

Existing-home sales rose in May to a 5.35 million annualized rate, the highest level since November 2009, the National Association of Realtors reported last week. The share of first-time buyers matched the highest level since September 2012.

While housing starts declined 11.1 percent in May to a 1.04 million annualized rate, that followed a revised 1.17 million pace in April to cap the best back-to-back readings since late 2007, according to Commerce Department figures. Permits for future projects rose to the highest level in almost eight years.
