Boxcar Train eatery closed, space now available for rent

GENEVA – The Boxcar Train Restaurant, 500 S. Third St., Geneva, was barely open for seven months before it closed in February, and now ShoDeen Management has it listed as available to rent.

The restaurant had a train theme, where food came out on a little train, chugging on a little track next to the booths, which was then served to customers.

The eatery opened last summer. Its four owners, who already owned local restaurants, said they wanted a family-friendly – but upscale – version of similarly styled restaurants.

One of the owners, Matt Dieter, who owns Ray’s Evergreen Tavern in St. Charles, had said last July that they wanted to have a restaurant that catered to families with young children, but with a better quality of food.

Neither Dieter nor the other owners returned messages seeking comment, but the restaurant’s Facebook page announced its closing in a Feb. 12 post.

ShoDeen Management commercial leasing agent Dan Meisinger said the space has been shown to eight prospective tenants, but none have decided to take it further.

“I truly do believe that particular spot and that [train] concept really would do well in Geneva and I think Geneva would welcome it,” Meisinger said. “There was a lot of positive feedback and a lot of people were very

upset when they closed. It’s a great space so close to [the] train station with a fully built-out 3,500-square-foot restaurant.”

Meisinger said he would prefer to see a restaurant in that spot featuring something Geneva does not already offer – if not a child-themed restaurant then perhaps barbecue or more French-inspired.

“We have reached out to trainthemed restaurants and there has been some interest but no official offers,” Meisinger said.

“A kid-themed restaurant would be welcomed with open arms in Geneva.”

Car gets stuck in sinkhole, then run over by truck

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com BURLINGTON TOWNSHIP – In the early morning hours Tuesday, a Ford Taurus was headed north on Thomas Road in Burlington Township, when it encountered a stretch of road that had been washed away, near McDonald Road, Kane County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler said.

The Taurus happened upon a sinkhole, and Gengler said the vehicle, driven by Elgin resident Juanita Pineda, 41, ended up completely below the level of the road. Pineda and a passenger, her son, Benjamin Hernandez, 15, were trapped inside.

After that, Gengler said, a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Irvin Moreno, 25, of Maple Park, was headed south on the same stretch of road and ended up on top of the Taurus.

Gengler described the sinkhole as 10 feet in diameter and deep.

The sinkhole appears to have been caused by the heavy rains that fell Monday night, Gengler said. Thomas

Road will be closed between Middleton and McDonald roads indefinitely because of the damage.

Fire personnel extricated the occupants of the Taurus, and Pineda and Hernandez were taken to local hospitals.

Their condition was not available, but they were treated for injuries that apparently were not life-threatening, Gengler said.

Moreno was treated at the scene and released, Gengler said. No tickets were issued.

Police were dispatched to the scene at 3:50 a.m. Gengler said Pineda and Hernandez were working to deliver newspapers.

Gengler said the drivers appeared to be fortunate.

“When you see this, you are like, ‘This is really, really bad,’ ” Gengler said, adding that “if one variable changed here or there, this could have been so much worse.”

Gengler said it’s a good example of the dangers of driving on flooded roadways. He said it is “a rural area, and there are no street lights.”

“You don’t know what’s under that water,” he said.

Except for Lindenbrook’s cane, they were a yin and yang.

Partners for 51 years, the St. Charles Township couple finally could get married legally in Illinois, which allowed same-sex marriage June 1. The Rev. Olin Sletto married them June 21 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin, where they are members.

“This is the culmination of a dream I never thought would happen,” Lindenbrook said, his eyes glistening with tears.

“And it just makes me so unbelievably happy.”

Brooks said he was grateful to Holy Trinity’s membership for voting to allow samesex weddings. As part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, each church is allowed to decide for itself whether to do same-sex weddings.

“I never thought it would happen in our lifetime,” Brooks said during a cake-andcookie reception after the ceremony. “I never thought that I would be legally married to Donald. And I’m grateful that it’s happened. I’m glad to know that Illinois is progressive enough to let us do it.”

While the emotional aspects of being able to marry legally are foremost for them, another aspect is financial: Same-sex weddings are providing a financial boost to the wedding industry on all fronts – including clothes, flowers, jewelry, venues, receptions, food, accessories, photogra-

Although Illinois has not officially calculated the economic impact of same-sex weddings, The Williams Institute examined it for Washington and found that total spending on wedding arrangements and tourism by resident same-sex couples and their guests would add an estimated $88 million boost to the state and local economy of Washington over three years.

The institute is a national think tank at the University of California School of Law doing independent research on

sexual orientation and gender identity law and public policy, according to its website.

Also, in 2004, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that on net, the impact of same-sex marriages in all 50 states would improve the budget’s bottom line by less than $1 billion in each of the next 10 years.

A 2007 study by the New York City comptroller estimated that same-sex weddings would add $142 million to the city’s economy and $184 million to the state’s economy overall.

Local businesses that serve the wedding industry report significant interest this year, such as Nancy McElvenny, owner of Crystal Bride in Geneva.

“It is no more or no less than any other heterosexual wedding,” McElvenny said.

“Very much like anyone else, they want a beautiful dress to wear.”

New collections are coming out with women’s black tuxedos for bridesmaids, she said, so that women can stand up in a wedding with a suit that fits.

“It gives you more couples

who can get married when you are not limiting yourself to the male-female idea of what a wedding is,” McElvenny said.

“You have all these people who could not get married before, but now they can.”

At the reopened Fishermen’s Inn in Blackberry Township near Elburn, owner Patricia Southern said the facility has three same-sex weddings booked for 2015. Southern said she did not pay attention to the law making same-sex marriage legal in Illinois.

“I just figured they are the same as anybody else,” Southern said of same-sex couples wanting to get married. “I don’t think about it. I really don’t. Good for them.”

••• While Brooks and Lindenbrook’s wedding was modest with about 50 guests, Anne Vogt and Rachel Clark of Elgin got married at the Herrington Inn and Spa in Geneva with 125 guests and a full wedding package.

They were by far not the first – though they were the first for when the law went into effect, Herrington spokeswoman Jennifer Piazza said.

“We are no stranger to same-sex unions [as] we have had three in the last 10 years,” Piazza said. “But the amount of requests and phone calls is multiplying. Same-sex couples are definitely getting engaged and shopping for wedding venues. ... We have five more planned for the rest of the year and five more in 2015.”

Piazza said the wording was changed a bit to reflect the terms “couple” or “spouse” instead of bride and groom.

“Things are different, but not much,” Piazza said. “We are not here for rules, but to customize.”

“After he hit the other vehicle, he drove away for several blocks, parked his vehicle and hid in someone’s backyard with a pool, next to a tree,” police reported. “After several minutes, he realized he didn’t know where he was and decided to get back in his car and continued driving.”

It was at that point that Brownlee saw a police car in the 700 block of Stonehedge Road, prompting him to immediately stop the car, police reported.

Brownlee reportedly ran through the wooded area along the road and jumped a metal fence into a backyard, where police caught up to him.

Brownlee complained of a head injury from the earlier battery, police said, and paramedics were called.

ST. CHARLES – A house fire early Tuesday morning on St. Charles’ east side possibly was storm-related, but an investigation into the incident is ongoing, said Kevin Christensen, St. Charles assistant fire chief.” We haven’t come up with a definitive cause yet,” he said.

The fire caused an estimated $175,000 in fire and water damages to the home at 1852 Allen Lane in St. Charles, according to a news release from the St. Charles Fire Department. There were no injuries, but the home is not habitable at this time, Christensen said.

Christensen said the time of the fire, first reported at 1:47 a.m. Tuesday, coincided with one of the storms that moved through Kane County, but no one physically saw lightning strike the home. A passing St. Charles police officer on patrol saw flames near the home’s roof, according to the news release.

“He alerted the family by ringing the doorbell and getting everyone out of the house,” Christensen said of the officer.

Fire crews arrived at 1:53 a.m. Tuesday and entered the home’s attic through a hatch on the second floor. The fire appeared to have originated in the home’s roof or attic area, Christensen said.

Fire crews had water lines running inside and outside the home to battle the blaze.

The interior lines extinguished the fire from inside, and the outside lines kept the fire from spreading elsewhere, Christensen said.

The fire was brought under control in an hour, and firefighters remained at the scene until 5:27 a.m. Tuesday completing overhaul operations and starting its investigation.

Christensen said the family living in the home will be staying in temporary housing and there are relatives nearby to give support. He did not know when the family members would be able to move back into their home, which sustained significant damage to the roof and second floor.

The Geneva and Batavia fire departments assisted St. Charles with the fire, with the Elburn and Fermilab fire departments providing coverage, according to the release.

ST. CHARLES – An altercation at a wedding party in St. Charles led to a car chase that resulted in multiple charges against one driver, including reckless driving and criminal damage to property, according to St. Charles police reports.

Police were called to the area of Huntington and Forest Ridge roads about 10:30 p.m. Saturday for a battery in progress stemming from a wedding party on nearby Sterling Court, police reported.

Mark Michael Mullen reportedly had hit a guest in the throat, realized he struck the wrong person and ran toward Forest Ridge and Huntington roads to hit another man – later identified as Jason W. Brownlee – over the head with a beer bottle.

Mullen then got into an Acura containing four others and left, police said, noting Mullen entered the passenger side.

Brownlee reportedly chased after the car in his rental car, a red Ford Focus.

Police reported Brownlee intentionally rammed the Ford into two vehicles but didn’t provide details on those crashes.

Brownlee reportedly told police he drove to get away from his attacker and claimed he hit the

“extremely belligerent” with officers, police said, describing him as “highly intoxicated.”

Brownlee, 44, of the 4400 block of Magna Vista Drive, Jackson, Wisconsin, was charged with reckless conduct, aggravated assault, obstructing/resisting arrest, driving under the influence, reckless driving, hit and run and two counts of felony criminal damage to property.

Police said he was charged for each vehicle he intentionally hit. His rental car sustained “significant front end damage,” police said.

The front bumper was crushed inward, the hood had several creases and, police reported, the airbags had deployed.

According to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office’s online records, Brownlee is being held on $30,000 bond.

He is expected in court Thursday for a status hearing.

The Acura, meanwhile, was stopped in the 1200 block of Winners Cup Circle.

Mullen, 31, of the 200 block of East Mineral Street, Milwaukee, was charged with four counts of battery.

paintballs in Sugar Grove SUGAR GROVE – A house and two vehicles in Sugar Grove were damaged by paintballs last month, leading police to ask at least one victim to contact authorities if she hears or sees anything suspicious, according to Sugar Grove police reports.

Police first discovered the vandalism when responding to a damaged mailbox complaint in the 700 block of Brighton Drive on June 15.

The residents reportedly told police they heard and saw four to five young teenage boys behind their house in a common area between several homes at about 3:15 a.m.

They didn’t feel it was important to call police, police said. Later that morning, they reportedly saw their mailbox was damaged, as well as their neighbor’s.

Police reported a vehicle, also in the 700 block of Brighton Drive, was vandalized by paintballs. The owners reportedly told police they heard kids’ voices about 3:15 a.m. and went back to bed after checking on

Two days later, police reportedly responded to the 700 block of Merrill New Road for a house and vehicle hit by paintballs overnight.

Police reportedly told the resident that the department had taken several reports of similar vandalism since summer vacation started and asked her to notify police of suspicious activity.

“We are trying to patrol the neighborhood as much as possible, but we’ll need the public’s help in trying to catch those responsible for this act,” police reported telling the resident.

Chief Pat Rollins said Tuesday the vandalism since has decreased.

family was at his side as he ended his courageous battle with cancer.

Joe was born Jan. 27, 1955, in Welschen-Ennest, Germany, the son of Alexander and Anna (nee Wurm) Peterkes. He was united in marriage to Amy Ann Llewellyn on June 8, 1991, in Singapore.

Raised in Rahrbach, he completed his master’s education at Niederrhein College, Düsseldorf, Germany, and began his career.

Moving to the U.S., he had the privilege of being selected as one of the chefs to provide a presidential inaugural meal. With his wife Amy, he moved to Singapore and they began their family life welcoming their two children, David and Anna, into their lives.

Returning to the U.S. in 2006, Joe continued to thrive and enjoy life.

Joe treasured his satisfying career as an executive and flavorist throughout the world. He created many special flavors which can be found in food products, enjoyed both at home and in restaurants.

His zest for life, love of exploring and residing in foreign places has left many with a deep sense of loss.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Amy of St. Charles; his children, David and Anna Peterkes, both of St. Charles; a brother, Heinrich Werner (Claudia) Peterkes of Germany; and Uta Elisabeth Peterkes-Hoberg of Germany; his nieces and nephews, Lea and Sarah Peterkes and Felix and Nikolas Hoberg; and an uncle, Heinz (Rita) Wurm.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents.

LAFOX – John “Jack” M. Dowling, 86, of LaFox, passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones at 4:45 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 2014, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva. He and his twin brother, Jerry, were born Jan. 29, 1928, in Chicago, the youngest children of Joseph and Margaret (nee Molloy) Dowling.

For the past 35 years of his life, Jack mourned the death of his beloved wife, Ann Marie McDaniel.

Jack Dowling never remarried nor would have thought to. Jack loved Ann, period. May they dance together once again and forever.

Jack Dowling was a familiar face on Michigan Avenue in Chicago from the post-war 1940s through 1970s; a contributor to the fabric of the city he loved: Chicago. He was an artist of extraordinary talent.

Anyone who opened and enjoyed the visual dynamic of a Montgomery Ward or Sears Catalog in this era is familiar with his work. Or perhaps you caught him and his twin brother, Jerry, on the ballfield for both are inducted members of the Chicago 16-inch Softball Hall of Fame. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army and served in a local capacity as a member of the 1968 post-National Democratic Convention Walker Report Task Force. In 1971, Jack and Ann pursued their dream to live in harmony with nature and settled with their young family in LaFox, which he called home the rest of his life. Jack Dowling lived life to its fullest, with pride and with dignity.

In addition to his parents and bride Ann, Jack was preceded in death by all of his dear siblings,

Eileen McAlynn (nee Dowling), Jimmy Dowling, Marie Peters (nee Dowling), William Dowling, Peggy Dowling and Jerry Dowling. He also was preceded in death by two closely held first cousins, Gerald Wall and Patrick “Paddy” Nugent.

Village orders massage parlor to shut down

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Village authorities ordered a massage parlor to close after a compliance check revealed the business did not meet the state’s licensing requirements, according to an Elburn police report.

A police officer and Elburn Building Commissioner Tom Brennan visited Asian Spa Massage, 151 E. Route 38, Suite E, on May 28 and reportedly told personnel that the Asian massage therapy diploma displayed on the wall was insufficient.

A license from the Illinois Department of Professional Regulations is required, police reported.

Police Chief Steve Smith said Tuesday the business was given notice it cannot open as a massage facility until it obtains proper licensing from the state.

Despite “open” signs in the spa’s windows, Brennan said the business is closed. He said he drives by the business every day and has requested the police also check it after business hours to ensure it is compliant with the May 28 order.

Proper licensing would make the business legal, Brennan said.

While the business was once in conflict with the village’s zoning code, Brennan said it now meets the requirements because it also offers beauty services.

Veterinarian drops suit over website attacks

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ELBURN – An Elburn veterinarian who breeds ragdoll cats reached a settlement with one of five anonymous John Does she sued, claiming they had defamed her in online websites, court records show.

Jennifer Creed, who owns A+ Pet Vet Inc., 41W704 Far View Road in Campton Township near Elburn, also doing business as A+ Dr. Jenn’s Ragdolls, according to the Illinois Secretary of State Business Services, sued for interference with her business, defamatory statements that harmed her reputation and her business and caused her emotional distress.

Creed’s suit sought damages in excess of $50,000, and that the nameless defendants be compelled to remove the various offending websites.

Last month, Creed’s attorney Liz Brodzinski filed court papers seeking a dismissal of the lawsuit without prejudice – which means she can refile her claims at a later date – against four of the five.

In court papers, Creed said she had reached a confi-

dential settlement agreement May 19 with John Doe 1 and sought to have the lawsuit dismissed against him with prejudice – meaning she cannot refile the suit against him.

Also according to the dismissal filing, Brodzinski noted, “None of the defendants have filed appearances.”

According to court records, Kane County Circuit Court Judge James Murphy granted the voluntary dismissal of the charges against John Doe 1 with prejudice and John Does 2-5 without prejudice.

The various websites Creed sought to shut down had accused her of piling kittens in cages and of breeding kittens with congenital defects – both allegations she disputed in court papers as false and de-

famatory. Other comments sought to shut down her business and have her veterinary license revoked, according to the lawsuit.

Creed has been licensed as a veterinarian in Illinois since 1993 and has never been disciplined, according to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. According to the Better Business Bureau, Creed’s business is listed as an accredited agency since June 1, 2014, with no complaints listed against it.

“I have heard that story over and over again from people I know who have lost a partner,” Jorgensen said. “It is just nice that society is recognizing same-sex relationships so ... that people have some rights that are protected by law.”

ST. CHARLES – An Elgin man seen driving erratically with a blown-out tire in St. Charles last week faces charges of drunken driving, according to a St. Charles police report.

Police responded to Route 25 near Fulton Avenue at about 1 p.m. Friday to find the driver of a white minivan apparently asleep at a red light, police said.

The van reportedly paused for a couple of seconds after the light turned green, then accelerated sharply.

In addition to making a loud grinding noise and smoke from the acceleration, police said sparks were coming from the vehicle because it was missing its front right tire. The officer turned on the squad car’s lights, but instead of yielding to the right, the motorist reportedly jerked to the left so that most of the minivan was in the lane for oncoming traffic.

The minivan continued south before making a wide right turn onto Walnut Av-

enue, police reported, noting the wide arc resulted in the motorist driving in the wrong lane.

The vehicle eventually stopped in a parking lot, police said.

The driver, Christian Aguinaga, failed field sobriety tests and had a blood-alcohol content of 0.198 percent, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent, police reported.

Christian A witness Aguinaga who saw Aguinaga turn onto Route 25 from Red Gate Bridge told police the minivan was “all over the road,” drove off the road, nearly crashed with other vehicles and hit a curb “very hard,” police said.

Aguinaga, 23, of the 1100 block of Royal Boulevard, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a blood-alcohol content of more than 0.08 percent, driving without insurance and use of an unsafe tire.

He is expected in court Aug. 7 for a plea setting.

After Hobby Lobby THE WASHINGTON POST When business owners enter the public marketplace, they should expect to follow laws with which they might disagree, on religious or other grounds. This is particularly true when they form corporations, to which the government offers unique benefits unavailable to individuals.

The Supreme Court weakened that principle Monday.

Congress should revitalize it.

The justices ruled on the Affordable Care Act’s contraception mandate, which requires employer-based health insurance policies to provide contraception to covered employees. Several corporations challenged the law, insisting that the mandate unlawfully infringes on their owners’ religious rights. In a 5-4 ruling, the court agreed with the corporations, which included Hobby Lobby, a large arts and crafts chain, and Conestoga Wood Specialties, a cabinetmaker.

By historical accident, the country has based its health care system on employers arranging for their employees’ coverage. Transforming that system would have been disruptive, so President Obama’s Affordable Care Act largely sustained it, with Congress mandating that large and medium businesses offer essential benefits in their health plans.

But the court demanded Monday that the government accommodate corporation owners who bring their religious convictions into the public sphere. Some accommodations might be expensive, Justice Samuel Alito admitted in the majority opinion, but that’s not the court’s main concern. Neither, apparently, is the fact that some corporate owners will likely continue to object to workarounds, leading to more lawsuits.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

What else might courts now require in the name of corporations’ religious liberty? Justice Alito discouraged speculation that the court’s decision will lead to the weakening of other public health mandates, such as those covering vaccines or blood transfusions. Even if corporations enjoy religious protections, he wrote, the court must apply a balancing test before requiring exceptions, a balancing test the contraception mandate – and, at this point, only the contraception mandate – did not pass.

But that balancing test may be tough for the government to satisfy in other circumstances, too, if it is applied as aggressively as the court did in this instance. The public health case for the contraception mandate is strong. Institute of Medicine experts recommended universal contraceptive coverage. In the context of the employer-based system, the place to accomplish that is in the government’s broader benefits policy. The resulting imposition on religious business owners, meanwhile, was small. The mandate does not force them or any of their employees to use the birth control methods to which they object.

If this is the sort of balancing that the Supreme Court will conduct, Congress should change the law. The Constitution generally does not require religious exceptions to generally applicable laws. The ruling relied on the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, a statute that does not mention corporations and that lawmakers could easily narrow. They should not only guarantee contraception coverage but also repair the federal government’s ability to provide for wholly legitimate common goods, such as public health and marketplace regulation.

In an email, Wegner said he spoke with the state’s attorney’s office about them.

“It is my understanding that the state’s attorneys are reviewing all emails, including the ones that I previously advised them of,” Wegner wrote in an email. “As a result, there is no reason for me to give an opinion, since the ultimate role under the ethic’s ordinance is for the state’s attorney to review.”

Ward was suspended for five days without pay after his March 12 emails came to light.

He then resigned after Cunningham eliminated his position.

According to the county’s online employee wage and salary data for 2013, Ward was employed at the clerk’s office

as an applications analyst for $47,999.90 a year. He started Dec. 7, 2012, as a part-time employee, going full-time June 9, 2013, according to county records.

In a separation agreement, Cunningham agreed to pay Ward $11,298.42, the equivalent of 12 weeks of pay. The move prompted Geneva resident Bob McQuillan to ask for Cunningham to resign.

McQuillan also went to a county committee meeting to talk about the severance payment.

“To me, $11,300 for less than 12 months of work is not a legitimate expense,” McQuillan had said.

Cunningham did not resign, but he did change his campaign so it would be located in a separate, mobile unit, and no longer be connected to his elected office.

GENEVA – The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office is conducting an investigation into both Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham and a former deputy clerk regarding allegations of ethics and state law violations, according to information released through a Freedom of Information Act Jack Cunningham request.

Cunningham and his former deputy clerk, Jeff Ward of Geneva, used the county’s computers, server and email for election and political purposes during Cunningham’s campaign for the March 18 Republican primary, email records show.

Cunningham said Ward was a volunteer in his re-election efforts.

State law and the county’s own ethics ordinance forbid the use of taxpayer resources for political purposes. Cunningham won the primary and will run unopposed for a fourth term Nov. 4 unless a write-in candidate files.

In responding to earlier questions about Cunningham and Ward, McMahon said his office’s policy is not to comment on pending or possible investigations.

But after the Illinois Supreme Court ruled last month that state’s attorney’s offices are not exempt from the Freedom of Information Act, the Kane County Chronicle filed a request seeking records related to Cunningham and Ward.

In partially denying the records request this week, Assistant State’s Attorney and FOIA officer Joseph Lulves responded that “the issues covered in your request were referred to this office for review, which is ongoing. All material is exempt from production pursuant to the FOIA exemption.”

Among the exemptions that apply include that it would interfere with “active administrative enforcement proceedings ... [and would] create a substantial likelihood that a person will be deprived of a fair trial or an impartial hearing. Emergency siren policies can vary from town to town Elburn has changed its emergency siren alert process to include certain severe thunderstorms in which hail is a significant risk.

The sirens Patti Thompson, communications manager for the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, said the rules for setting off emergency sirens is “a local decision.” She said communities aren’t required to have the sirens at all, but the agency does have guidelines about testing. Sirens are tested at 10 a.m. on the first Tuesday of every month.

“It’s their decision about how to alert their citizens of a hazard,” she said.

Gualdoni said there are five sirens in Elburn. This year, the siren policy was updated to include severe thunderstorm warnings, with wind speeds of at least 70 mph or golf ball-sized hail. Previously, he said, a tornado warning was necessary.

He said he understood criticism

from those who said Elburn should have done a better job of spreading the word about the change. He brought it up at a recent board meeting, and it appeared not all Elburn trustees were aware of the change.

“That’s one of the big problems,” he said. “There’s a lack of information on our website.”

Trustees and village staff, however, supported the sounding of the sirens during the hail storm. Village President Dave Anderson said it was the right decision.

Hruza, however, said he will head to the Elburn Village Board meeting on July 21 to speak on the issue. During a severe storm, Hruza posts frequent updates to his Facebook page, and he said there were many who were puzzled about why the sirens were going off.

He said it’s “dangerous to the public” to sound the sirens for hail because there are “complacent people” who won’t heed the warnings if they are sounded too often.

“Sounding them for hail is unacceptable,” Hruza said. “It really upset me when I heard that.”

A fellow storm chaser, St. Charles-based Lorraine Mahoney, agreed that many people don’t listen to warnings.

“We already have enough people not care about tornado sirens because they go off, and 90 percent of the time a tornado never comes,” she said.

“Sounding sirens more, I think, will make the situation worse.”

However, she said if there were another tone associated with severe storm warnings, she would see how that would

When a severe storm rages, often bringing strong winds, booming thunder and dark clouds, the sound of a siren piercing through all of that chaos is meant to deliver the message that a particularly serious threat exists. Those nearby are advised to seek shelter immediately in the safest place possible.

It happened Monday night in North Aurora and Sugar Grove, after a funnel cloud was reported south of Route 30 in Aurora, though Don Bryant, director of the Kane County Office of Emergency Management, said it was not confirmed as being a tornado. And in May, sirens were sounded in Elburn, though there was no tornado threat, when hail as large as tennis balls fell in some areas.

The decision of when to set up such alarms is up to designated individuals in a community – individuals who are trained to respond to such events. There is little debate among those in the Tri-Cities and Kaneland areas that sirens would sound in the event of a tornado warning. However, the sirens can be activated in other situations, and the designated individuals say it’s important to be sure to resort to the sirens only when necessary, for fear that residents might tune them out if they are sounded too often.

In Elburn, Brad Hruza, a weather spotter and storm chaser, criticized the recent sounding of the village’s siren during the hail storm, saying it confused his neighbors and could lead to people taking the warnings less seriously.

But Dave Gualdoni, an Elburn Village Board member who works closely with the Elburn Community Response Team, defended the decision, saying he felt it was necessary to warn people who might have been out at athletic fields and could have been seriously injured by such large hail.

He said he would sound them again in a similar situation because the idea is to get people inside and away from the large hail. He said Elburn doesn’t set off sirens to start a parade or in celebration. He said it’s not as if the area gets golf ball-sized hail often.

“At our baseball fields, we have no shelters, and that’s what scares me the most,” Gualdoni said.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – By the end of the year, the Sugar Grove Police Department plans to expand into space currently occupied by village offices.

The village and the police department currently share a building at 10 S. Municipal Drive. The village recently closed on the purchase of two vacant buildings in a nearby office park that will serve as the new village hall and a small business incubator.

A building at 140 S. Municipal Drive will serve as the new village hall, and a second building at 160 S. Municipal Drive will serve as storage space for the village and an incubator space for a new business.

The police department is in need of more space, Village Administrator Brent Eichelberger said.

“More interview rooms is one of the department’s big needs,” he said.

Sugar Grove purchased the two 6,000-square-foot buildings along with three building pads and a parking lot for $975,000. Only 3,000 square feet in each building is finished, Eichelberger said.

Eichelberger estimated that it will cost another $400,000 to $500,000 to remodel and furnish the building for use as a village hall.

The idea would be to move village hall into the new building by the end of the year, but he said the process shouldn’t be rushed.

“We want to make sure we take our time to properly design it,” he said. “Rather than move in as is, we want to take our time to develop the best design for that longer term.”

The village would rent the space to start-up businesses at a reduced market rate.

“It would be a place where start-up small businesses can get some space in an economical way,” he said.

“If you activate the siren only when there’s a true emergency, and people know and appreciate that, they certainly respond to it,” Bumba said, adding that the concern is “you don’t want to activate a siren, and people are at a heightened state and get very anxious, and have it be nothing. Then they get very angry.”

Bumba said Elburn’s policy is valid, but he said officials should do what they can to spread the word.

“What Elburn’s doing, there’s nothing wrong with it,” Bumba said, adding that there should be a “robust” public information campaign to accompany such a change.

In Batavia, Fire Chief Randy Deicke, who also leads the city’s Emergency Services and Disaster Agency, described a policy similar to Elburn’s.

Batavia’s sirens can sound if a trained weather spotter reports a tornado or a funnel cloud.

But they also could sound if winds speeds were reported at 58 mph or stronger, as well as when there is a tornado warning. Deicke said that sounding the sirens is a rare thing. There are eight sirens in Batavia, he said.

“It’s always been an attitude that we don’t want to get the citizens used to hearing the sirens, so that they start to ignore them,” he said.

Olson said the sirens are activated when a funnel cloud is spotted or when there are straight-line winds that could cause damage. He said they are sounded when there is reason to be concerned, and they are not often sounded.

In Sugar Grove, Village President Sean Michels said the village’s sirens go off when Aurora’s sirens go off. He said they were sounded Monday because of the funnel cloud spotted in Aurora.

Gualdoni said he consulted with many throughout the

region who have input on creating policies on the sirens in Elburn. He said Elburn is in a different situation than some villages and cities, since the fire district covers a district much larger than the village, and it is the police department that helps create the policy.

And while he said it’s important to use the sirens sparingly, he said it’s important to use them when necessary.

“The one time you don’t sound it and something bad does happen, what do you do?” he asked.

Reacting swiftly to the lone lull in a 6-1 victory against the Chiefs went a long way, too.

With his teammates in the middle of a six-run, third inning rally – highlighted by second baseman Ben Carhart’s three-run home run – Blackburn retreated to the bullpen to stay sharp.

Call it an instinctual intermission in an eventual fourhit, three-strikeout night that gave Blackburn his seventh win in nine decisions.

“You just kind of know, really,” Blackburn said. “You know when you’re sitting there a long time. I mean, I just said to myself, ‘If they’re going to change pitchers, I need to just throw a little bit, just to kind of stay loose.’ Because it was a pretty long inning.”

Carhart opened the burst in earnest with a clutch at-bat against Chiefs righty Arturo Reyes, working the count full after falling behind 0-2.

With runners at the corners and Kyle Schwarber, the parent Cubs’ first-round draft pick last month, on deck, Carhart jumped on a Reyes fastball. He entered the game on a 6-for-33 (.182) slump.

“He’s been scuffling a little bit lately,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said, “and for him to grind out an at-bat and then end it with a home run and put us up like that is huge for him and the team. It was just a big boost.”

The cycle of Cael Catcher Cael Brockmeyer didn’t realize his first career cycle was within reach until the eighth inning Sunday, when a reminder came courtesy of Cougars first base coach Chris Gutierrez.

Gutierrez leaned in after a Brockmeyer single against Beloit. All the 6-foot-5, 235 pounder needed was a triple to complete the feat.

“We kind of laughed, and I’m like, ‘Yeah, the hardest one to get, sure…,’ ” Brockmeyer said.

Brockmeyer delivered in the ninth while sparking the Cougars to a 9-7 victory, smacking a shot off the right field wall that scored the two go-ahead runs. The ball caromed off the base of the wall and rolled away just enough, allowing him extra time to reach third base.

“I was almost to second, and said, ‘I might as well just go for it.’ It was pretty cool,” Brockmeyer said.

Headphones on, Blackburn fixed a short glance at either clubhouse TV before Tuesday’s match, but was more dialed in to his start than soccer.

“I just have a couple set songs, really, that I just listen to,” he said. “Just kind of go through my whole pitching process and just kind of envision things, so I can plan what I’m going to do.”

That itinerary included

Part of the bat hit Blackburn in his lower back, then the back of his leg, but he pitched on after a quick evaluation.

“We’re fortunate with that one,” Johnson said. “That’s some dangerous stuff.”

“There’s been some outstanding, legendary coaches that have coached in the game,” Johnson said. “I just thought it was important. Jim has given back to high school basketball so much and to players in the Batavia community and high school basketball as a whole. I thought it was something nice to kind of honor Jim in that manner.

He’s so humble, he didn’t want it to be that big of a deal, so he was able to come out and just be part of the event with the kids.”

Johnson trekked to Bloomington for part of the weekend’s agenda but had to return before Saturday night’s game because of a death in the family.

Johnson preaches a defense-first mentality at Kaneland, so learning of Saturday’s final score might have made him squirm a smidge.

“In the practice game on Friday, you could tell he wanted to coach the defensive side of the ball, but I think he put it aside and just kind of enjoyed the experience,” Carlson said.

Basketball all-star games aren’t known for their defense.

Recent Kaneland graduate Ty Carlson found himself in the midst of an extreme example Saturday night.

Carlson played for the victorious North team in the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association 3A/4A All-Star Game at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington. Final score: North 147, South 124.

“It was awesome,” Carlson said. “Playing in the Northern Illinois Big 12, some games are like 32-30. To go from that to 147 was pretty crazy.”

The tradition-rich IBCA AllStar game has featured some of the elite graduated seniors from throughout the state.

More spots were up for grabs than usual this year because of a new stipulation making it more difficult for players who already have enrolled in summer school at their colleges to participate.

It also didn’t hurt Carlson’s cause that Kaneland coach Brian Johnson is heavily involved in selecting North’s team.

“I was really excited for Ty,” Johnson said. “I think

it was well-deserved. He had an outstanding senior year, capped off with that sectional game where he put in 29 in that first half, which was just amazing. He felt really honored to be a part of that. It was great that he was representing Kaneland.

“My first year Dave [Dudzinski] played in the game, and as a first-year coach, I didn’t realize the meaning behind the game, how great it was, and I wasn’t involved in the IBCA at the time, so I didn’t make it down for when Dave played.

But to see Ty be part of it, a lot of guys were excited about it, and people in the community were excited for Ty.” Carlson said he had “about six points” in the game but the 6-foot-3 wing was more enthused about practicing and playing with high-level talent as he gears up for college basketball at Aurora University.

Carlson also appreciated a nostalgic twist to the weekend.

Former Batavia boys basketball coach Jim Roberts – who coached Carlson’s dad, Josh, at Batavia in the early 1990s – was an assistant coach for the North team. “[My dad] talked to him beforehand and just thought it was really cool how things played out – my last high school experience was with his

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles American Legion Post 342 baseball team was unable to recover from a shaky first two innings against Elgin Post 57 on Tuesday.

Elgin scored seven runs in its first two at bats in a 10-5 win against St. Charles.

St. Charles was also unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities in the later innings, leaving a total of five runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

“It’s tough to climb back, but I thought we did a nice

job battling back and cutting the lead in half,” St. Charles coach Justin Moriarty said.

“We could have gotten more.

There were a couple innings there were we had guys on second and third and less than two outs and we couldn’t put another big inning together.”

Elgin (13-4) wasted no time in getting its offense going.

Leadoff batter Riley Halter rapped a double to center field against St. Charles (4-10) starting pitcher Austin Lovelady.

The team batted around in the inning, scoring four runs on four hits, a hit batter and an error.

Halter also started the of-

fense in the second with single to right. Elgin sent seven men to the plate in that inning, scoring three more runs on three hits, another St. Charles error and a sacrifice fly.

Lovelady, who went the distance, found his stride in the third inning. He allowed only four hits in the remaining five innings, walked three and struck out three. Rob Bond accounted for two of the remaining hits, including a solo home run in the fifth.

“Austin battled back. Take away those [first] two innings and he pitched a good game,” Moriarty said. “In those first two innings, he probably had

an extra 25 to 30 pitches because we couldn’t pick up the ball.”

St. Charles rallied for four runs in the third.

Elgin starting pitcher Tanner Gardon walked Erik Rabin and Alex Wiedemann to start the inning. St. Charles loaded the bases on Pat Hoan’s fielder’s choice when Halter dropped the ball on the attempted force on Wiedemann at second. Back-to-back singles by Luke Corcoran and Bernie Pellissier plated Rabin, Wiedemann and Hoan.

Corcoran scored on Nick Drawant’s single to left. Pellissier and Drawant were unable

to advance as Gardon retired the next three batters.

St. Charles threatened in the fourth when Rabin and Wiedemann reached base on a walk and an Elgin error. Hoan’s sacrifice bunt advance them into scoring position but Gardon struck out Corcoran and induced Pellissier to ground out to end the threat.

Drawant drew a walk to open the fifth, stole second and scored St. Charles’ fifth run on Duncan Szpara’s single. Brandon Strzelecki followed with another single.

But again, Gordon retired the next three batters to end the inning.

Belgium rallies to end U.S. run at World Cup

By STEVEN GOFF The Washington Post SALVADOR, Brazil – When the 121st minute expired at Arena Fonte Nova on Tuesday, ending another evening of high World Cup drama, the U.S. soccer team’s players folded under the exhaustion and disappointment of a 2-1 extra-time loss to Belgium.

Some fell to their knees, others stood motionless or buried their faces.

They had endured merciless duress, pushed the roundof-16 match beyond regulation and fallen behind by two goals before almost executing an unfathomable comeback.

“We played our hearts out tonight,” said U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard, who finished with 16 saves. “We’ve been playing well all tournament.

Sometimes when you give it the best and you fight and you scrap through it, it doesn’t work out.”

In the end, as 51,227 spectators caught their breath, the Americans were ushered out of the tournament by a Belgian side pegged to contend for the championship. The Red Devils, perfect through four matches, will face Lionel Mes-

si and Argentina in a quarterfinal Saturday in Brasilia.

“It was a game that just went to the extreme,” U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said.

“We all are very, very proud of our team, of every player stepping on the field today. They gave everything they had. I think they made our country proud.”

Romelu Lukaku’s fresh legs and powerful upper body made the difference. Three minutes into extra time he muscled past Matt Besler and roared toward the end line before aiming a cross for Kevin De Bruyne. On his heels, Omar Gonzalez poked at it.

De Bruyne gathered the ball, steered wide and fired an angled eight-yarder to the far lower corner of the net.

De Bruyne and Lukaku combined for what appeared to secure victory in the 105th minute. Leading a counterattack, De Bruyne led his teammate into the box for a 12-yard one-timer to the near side.

Five minutes later, however, 19-year-old attacker Julian Green scored on a wonderful volley off Michael Bradley’s pass. Then, on a cleverly designed and executed free kick deep in Belgium’s end, Red

Devils goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made a reflex save on Clint Dempsey’s open bid from close range.

“Obviously, it’s a bummer for us, ending on the losing side after a game of 120 minutes that I think gave everything to the fans, to the crowd – a real drama, a thriller,” Klinsmann said. “We had enough possibilities to equalize that game in the end or even put it away earlier.”

Thoroughly dominated in the second half, the Americans had stirred in the final moments of regulation. But Chris Wondolowski, MLS’ surest finisher, missed high on a wide-open half-volley from six yards. Jermaine Jones had headed Geoff Cameron’s ball into a gaping pocket beyond Belgium’s stretched back line.

The assistant referee raised his flag, signaling offside, although TV replays showed he was onside. Wondolowski missed anyway, averting furious controversy.

Klinsmann shook up the lineup by inserting Cameron into Kyle Beckerman’s place in defensive midfield. This was surprising on two fronts: Beckerman had performed well in the group stage and

Cameron’s primary position is central defense, where he started the first two matches before being dropped in favor of Omar Gonzalez against Germany.

Aside from Jozy Altidore (hamstring), no U.S. players were carrying significant injuries, U.S. Soccer Federation spokesmen said.

Forty seconds into the festivities, Divock Origi, a 19-year-old forward making his first start for Belgium, nearly struck. Led into a gaping channel, he beat Omar Gonzalez and fired an angled 10-yarder toward the far corner. With the near side covered, Howard extended his right foot to deflect the low effort.

After that scare, the Americans were comfortable on the ball and assertive in possession. Belgium yielded time and space to work out of the back. The Americans looked to liberate Johnson and DaMarcus Beasley on the flanks.

Bradley and Dempsey worked a combination beyond the box, culminating with Thibaut Courtois’ routine save.

The U.S. effort suffered a blow in the 32nd minute when Johnson left with a strained

right hamstring – the third American to have hamstring issues in the tournament. Enter DeAndre Yedlin, a 20-yearold Seattle Sounder who had shown well in two previous substitution assignments.

Almost immediately, Yedlin won a corner kick. He served a dangerous cross in transition. He lifted the ball to himself beyond the box to avert an opponent. And, after gathering Bradley’s gorgeous long ball in stride, crossed to Zusi, who shanked a shot.

Belgium’s frustration grew. Captain Vincent Kompany was yellow-carded and Marouane Fellaini exchanged words with Algerian referee Djamel Hammoudi.

The Americans reached intermission on level terms, both on the scoreboard and in possession.

The Red Devils seized initiative after the break, hoarding possession and probing for opportunity. Howard pushed Dries Mertens’ header over the crossbar. Besler nicked Vertonghen’s cross just enough so Origi could not bash it into the back side. Origi’s 12-yard header, set up by Toby Alderweireld, skimmed the crossbar.

There is no exception for Northern Illinois men’s basketball. After sitting out a season, coach Mark Montgomery and the Huskies are looking forward to big contributions from Michael Orris and Anthony Johnson.

Orris is a 6-foot-2 point guard who transferred from Kansas State after his freshman year to be closer to home. Orris’ parents live in Crystal Lake. He is looking to fit into the Huskies’ backcourt as a point guard.

Orris is a quick-minded passer looking to get people involved in the offense and create scoring opportunities for other players.

“My role coming from the point guard position is to get other guys an opportunity to score, and to see the floor as much as possible,” Orris said.

Johnson stands at 6’3 and transferred from Purdue, where he played with Robbie Hummel and current Orlando Magic guard E’Twaun Moore.

Johnson spent three seasons at Purdue, and played in two of those years before having to transfer to NIU to be closer to home, and especially his grandmother. While he does create opportunities for other people to make plays, the Whitney Young product’s primary role is to score for the Huskies.

With the NCAA transfer rules, both Johnson and Orris were ineligible to play a season ago.

After sitting out a year, it could have been a difficult transition for both players, but they believe their time off and work in practice has brought them back ready and hungrier to reach their potential.

Early in their summer workout process, both players believe that practicing with the team in 2013-14 has helped them mesh well with their teammates early in the offseason.

“It’s a different mindset this year than it was a season ago.”

Orris said. “Obviously you’re still working hard and such when you’re just practicing, but now that we’re both eligible to play it is a different scenario for the two of us. Now, instead of just being practice players we are both trying to find our way into the rotation, onto the court.”

Montgomery believes the two guys are fitting in well early, and finding their way.

“Incorporating two guys who are very competitive and have some basketball skill is a nice sign, they work hard and are team guys that will give us a boost.” Montgomery said.

The return of Johnson and Orris, combined with a team

that should be fully healthy heading into the season has the team thinking the boost Montgomery was talking about could be big things. Guard Dontel Highsmith, who was NIU’s leading scorer before suffering a torn ACL in late January, will be ready to go by the start of the season.

The Huskies finished 15-17 and won a first-round game in the Mid-American Conference Tournament.

“I think that we should be able to win the conference and play in the NCAA Tournament.” Johnson said. “Anything less than that is a failure to me, with the talent we have I see no reason why we cannot compete and play on the NCAA’s biggest stage.”

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post Perhaps all you need to know about “They Came Together” is that the team that wrote and directed “Wet, Hot American Summer” brought it to the screen. Larky, witty and sometimes even wise, this spoof on every rom-com ever made is less a fully realized film than an extended skit, a series of set pieces that poke gentle and sometimes transgressively crude fun at the tropes of girl-meetsboy that have enchanted and addled audiences for generations. Trotting out each genre convention only to take the mickey out of them with vivisectionist glee, “They Came Together” winds up being oddly cathartic: It awakens the audience from its lingering Nora Ephron-induced coma with a splash of cold water delivered straight from a clown’s boutonniere.

“They Came Together” opens with two couples enjoying dinner, during which they exchange stories about how they met. Soon enough, Molly (Amy Poehler) and Joel (Paul Rudd) are regaling their glaze-eyed friends (Bill Hader and Ellie Kemper) about how they got together “in a corny, romantic-comedy kind of way,” with Joel dutifully taking the role of handsome-but-not-threatening leading man who’s “just Jewish enough” and Molly being the “cute, klutzy” girl whose lack of coordination leads to all kind of adorkable mishaps.

In “They Came Together,” that includes falling down an entire flight of stairs, before going to her picture-perfect job at a quirky, “impossible not to like” candy shop on the Upper West Side where all proceeds go to charity and where, unbeknownst to her, she’s the target of a mega-competitor’s plot to put her out of business. You don’t need to have watched “You’ve Got Mail” 100 times – preferably in your pajamas, with a pint of Haagen-Dazs

The meet-cute, the inevitable breakup and all the de rigueur montages are included in “They Came Together,” which casts all the way back to “Crossing Delancey” for satirical inspiration (and perhaps the movie’s most breathtakingly tasteless scene). Written by David Wain and Michael Showalter and directed by Wain, this silly, slight, sunny homage to the Hollywood mainstream at its most ersatz and ingratiating features a slew of memorable sequences, including a time loop set at a neighborhood bar in

which the phrases “Tell me about it” and “You can say that again” take on the classic hilarity of this century’s “Who’s on first.” One of the film’s several running gags centers around the rom-com staple of stopping someone just before they leave with a soft, “Hey” and, when they turn around, saying an equally soft and sincere, “Thanks.”

“They Came Together” is anything but subtle, and the film’s tendency to put quotation marks around everything would easily grow as tiresome as the hackneyed cliches were it not for Poehler and Rudd, each of whom plays it utterly straight. (As usual, Rudd is particularly sensational in a role that asks him to be coarsely profane and wholesomely boyish in the same breath, a feat perhaps only he could pull off.) Helped along by supporting players Ed Helms and Christopher Meloni (featured in the film’s most amusing

scatological gag), as well as a raft of choice cameo appearances, Rudd and Poehler keep “They Came Together” floating along on a cloud of barely winking humor and their characters’ shared love of “fiction books,” Q-tips and coffee. “Who are you?” they keep asking each other, amazed at the banalities they have in common.

The answer, of course, is that they’re Harry and Sally and Sam and Annie and Sam and Isabelle and, finally, Joel and Molly – all wrapped into one cute, klutzy, vaguely ethnic package. And despite “They Came Together’s” alternately obvious and observant efforts to send them up, they’re impossible not to like.

• “They Came Together” received two-and-a-half stars out of four. The film is rated R and contains profanity and sexual content. It runs 83 minutes.

Avoid future bouts of sciatica with regular exercise Dear Doctor K: I have sciatica. Is it safe for me to ride a stationary bike for exercise?

Dear Reader: Sciatica is persistent pain felt along the sciatic nerve. This nerve runs from the lower back, down through the buttock and into the lower leg.

Pain results when this nerve is compressed or injured. It most commonly results from inflammation, bone chips caused by arthritis, or a herniated (“slipped”) disk in the lower spine. (I’ve put an illustration showing some common causes of sciatica on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Sciatica causes sharp, burning pain, or tingling or numbness along the nerve. In many cases, symptoms are worse at night.

And the pain is aggravated by motion.

Many people with sciatica avoid exercise altogether for fear of making things worse. That’s usually not the best option. I commend your approach of exercising while being thoughtful about which exercise you choose.

As for which exercise, my advice is no different probably than what your grandmother might have given: Avoid exercises that hurt, and seek exercises that make you feel better.

You ask specifically about

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff riding a stationary bike. Sciatica pain is often worse when sitting on a firm surface because the sciatic nerve passes right through the buttock. When you sit on a bicycle seat, it can put pressure on the nerve. But sitting does not always make symptoms worse.

For example, if your sciatic nerve pain results from a problem higher up near the spine, you may tolerate riding a bike.

So, let your symptoms be your guide. If biking makes your symptoms worse, then try something else for exercise. Good choices may be walking or swimming, as they don’t put pressure on the nerve – particularly swimming.

In the meantime, try alternating hot and cold compresses to ease inflammation around the nerve. You also may need to take acetaminophen (Tylenol) for pain. Or try anti-inflammatory drugs such as naproxen (Aleve, Anaprox), ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, others) or aspirin for pain and inflammation. Prescription medications that treat chronic nerve pain may also help. Talk to

your doctor about those. In severe cases, an injection of a long-acting anesthetic with a steroid medication can provide relief.

Some people with sciatica find relief from chiropractic manipulation, acupuncture, massage and yoga. The value of these “alternative” or “complementary” therapies has been shown in several studies.

Sciatica usually improves within six weeks. Once the pain passes, specific exercises and stretches may prevent it from returning. Your doctor may refer you to a physical therapist who can guide you through a personalized exercise program. Exercises that strengthen the muscles of the back and abdomen are often prescribed. This stabilizes the spine bones and eases the pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Most people get relief with today’s treatments for sciatica.

Still, one of the most potent ways of reducing future bouts of sciatica is exercise. Don’t stop your exercise program once your pain has subsided: Keep it up!

Doesn’t love conquer all?

Most bridge deals are a battle.

One side is trying to execute a plan, while the other side is trying either to do the same or to thwart the opposition’s scheme.

In this deal, South was in three no-trump. What was the East-West strategy and how did South counter it? As a secondary issue, what do you think of the auction?

This deal occurred after the organized part of one of my “bridge camps without tents” (details on my website). Four of my students were just shuffling, dealing and playing.

In the auction, I think North ought to have used Stayman to try to find a 4-4 spade fit. Here, that would have resulted in a contract of four spades. With the trumps 3-2 and the heart ace onside, this would have made easily, South losing one spade, one heart and one diamond.

In three no-trump, declarer started with only six top tricks: two spades, one heart (given the lead) and three clubs. He planned to play on diamonds to establish the extra tricks he needed, but that was going to give the lead back to the defenders.

East and West were hoping to establish and run the heart suit.

To that end, West led the heart queen and East signaled encouragingly with her six.

South correctly did not win the first trick. He had to cut the communications between the defenders.

West continued with another heart. East won with her ace and returned the suit, but South won and played a diamond, hoping that either East would take the trick or that the hearts were splitting 4-4. As you can see, declarer was home with an overtrick.

Kaneland energy plan moves forward, with one objection SUGAR GROVE – Kaneland School District 302 is moving forward with a five-year contract with an energy conservation company, but it was not a unanimous decision.

The school board Monday OK’d the commitment with Cenergistic, a company that offers energy management and conservation programs to school districts throughout the country.

The vote was 5-1, with board member Peter Lopatin voting no.

The five-year program comes at a cost of $9,000 a month to Kaneland, with the idea of ultimately saving as much as $2 million. Company representatives previously said the goal is for the district to reduce spending on electricity, gas and water.

Lopatin took issue with four numbered items described as areas that would be emphasized.

Among them – that a designated campus administrator will be accountable for energy conservation, that all personnel at each campus would be expected to make a positive contribution to maximize energy conservation, that the company will implement its program through a team led by an energy specialist, and that accurate records of consumption and cost would

Lopatin asked whether employees could face discipline if they didn’t follow the instructions on an item to “make a positive contribution to maximize energy conservation and produce real energy savings.”

Kaneland Superintendent Jeff Schuler said discipline could be possible if the district set an expectation and the employee was not willing to meet it.

“I have a problem with something so vaguely worded,” Lopatin said.

Lopatin also had issues with an item outlining the energy specialist’s role, which referred to energy guidelines “that will be adopted by the administration and will define the ‘rules of engagement’ for our energy program.”

“This whole thing reads like gibberish to me,” Lopatin said of that item. He said the fourpart list was generic. He added that the list sounded like more of a behavior-based program in which Cenergistic officials would “nag at people” to make

changes. He said it left him uncomfortable and brought him back to initial skepticism of the project.

Schuler, however, said the commitment was just a starting off point, and there would be “a much-more detailed” document to come. He said this step is simply to show that the district is committed to the project. He said work is underway.

Other board members indicated they supported the project. Pedro Rivas, who previously voted against the proposal, was not at Monday’s meeting.

Assistant principal hired Also at Monday’s meeting, Kathy Webster was introduced as the new assistant principal at John Stewart Elementary School in Elburn. She replaces Julia Cloat.

Webster will serve in a parttime role and began in her new role Tuesday. Her contract calls for a salary of $33,000, plus benefits. According to a news release from Schuler, Webster emerged from a pool of more than 21 applicants. She previously worked in St. Charles School District 303.
