I always find it exciting when I can help young people learn more about journalism by having them come into our newsroom for a job shadow.

And so it was earlier this week, when AnnMarie Hilton, a soon-to-be senior at Central High School in Burlington, and Claire Jacobi, a recent graduate of Batavia High School, came into the Kane County Chronicle office to observe what the editorial team does and to ask questions.

The girls came by on Monday morning. We had a somewhat pre-determined schedule in place.

I gave AnnMarie and Claire a tour of the newsroom, and then they got to spend some time with photo editor Sandy Bressner.

Afterward, we took a break for lunch, and then the young ladies chatted with features editor Kara Silva.

Next up was a regular meeting of the editorial staff, which both girls attended. Then I spent some time with them, going over their résumés and reviewing some of AnnMarie’s school newspapers.

I think the job shadow

EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Gresey day – and one additional day for Claire, who spent some extra time with sports editor Jay Schwab – had a positive impact on Claire and AnnMarie.

“Walking into the Kane County Chronicle office on July 14, 2014, I knew I was interested in studying journalism; walking out I was confident that I was made to be a journalist,” wrote AnnMarie in an email to me later in the week. “When first exposed to journalism, I was taught that in order for a paper to run smoothly, the staff must act as a team.

A strong leader is vital to a successful team, and Gresey was exactly that. The way she interacted with her fellow editors and listened to each of their ideas gave me an understanding of what it means to have leadership in a newsroom. These are skills that I can bring to my high school newspaper as I serve as editor-in-chief.”

Chronicle wins first for best community website The Kane County Chronicle received first place for best community website in the Local Media Association’s Best In Digital Media Contest.

The paper received first place in the contest’s Class A category. In addition, Shaw Media, which owns the Kane County Chronicle, received 11 awards and was among the top company winners in the contest.

“We are very excited by the news that we’ve been named as having the best community website,” said Jim Ringness, general manager for Shaw Media’s Kane County operation. “It is truly a team effort.

We will continue to strive to bring the best digital and print versions to our readers moving forward.”

The Local Media Association is the only nonprofit, professional trade association specifically serving the local media industry, according to its website.

“Congratulations to all our winners for their outstanding successes and well-deserved honors,” read a statement from the association.

Kane County Fair enjoying good weather and fun

By EOIN COTTRELL ecottrell@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Kane County Fair Board President Larry Breon watched Friday from the second floor of an administrative building as fair guests enjoyed the event’s entertainment.

Breon said the Kane County Fair has been going really well this year.

He said the facility had been experiencing good crowds and that people were enjoying themselves. He noted that the success of every fair hinges on one uncontrollable factor.

He said the first Kane County Fair he attended was in 1952 and that – 62 years later – the nature of fairs has seriously

changed.

They used to be all about agriculture ,he said. Farmers would come and learn about new farming techniques or new fertilizers. And although fairs have certainly evolved

and adopted more modern forms of entertainment, 4-H still remains a big part of the Kane County Fair.

Breon said Kane County has a wonderful 4-H program, and the fair gives kids

a chance to show the public what they have been working on. And 4-H certainly draws crowds.

Kelly Lepak and her son John, from Aurora, were attending the fair for the first time and spent two hours enjoying the weather and the fair.

When asked about what he enjoyed most about the fair, John replied that he liked the bunnies and the rides.

Dawn Yoder said they had come to see all the beautiful animals and try some of the rides.

As she looked over at her kids bouncing on a trampoline contraption, she said the weather had been great for a day at the fair.

Music pumping, kids screaming and sun shining, fair-goers enjoyed a beautiful day with classic fair rides and familiar scents wafting through the grounds.

Residents can expect a somewhat similar weekend as forecasts predict sun today and Sunday – a staunch contrast to last year’s fair that was plagued with rain and tornado-like conditions.

“Attitudes are better because of the good weather,” Breon said. “It’s a win, win.”

GENEVA – After six years of hosting the Chris Walk Night Out Against Substance Abuse, Vicki Foley knows the event’s atmosphere might turn somber as people grieve for those they have lost.

But, she said, that’s OK. “Tears are healing,” Foley said, noting she and others might cry with – and later uplift – them.

Foley, a Shaw Media employee, and her family started the Chris Walk after her son, Chris, died of a heroin overdose on July 15, 2007. He was 27.

“It’s a loss you always feel,”

Foley said.

The Chris Walk – set for 4 to 8 p.m. July 26 – is a place where people can celebrate the lives of those lost with others who will understand their story, Foley said. It is also about education and awareness, she said, so that people will know where to turn if they ever need help with a loved one struggling with substance abuse.

Along with its new location of Gunnar Anderson Forest Preserve in Geneva – previous walks have been held in Aurora and Batavia – the event will feature a Zumba workout, a 5K run/walk, a silent auction, raffles, music and food.

Chris Walk also will award its annual community service

award to Carrie Thomas, the drug court program coordinator. Speakers include Sheriff Pat Perez and U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville.

“I’m always happy to participate, especially with trying to bring awareness not just to the heroin epidemic in Kane County but all drug abuse,” Perez said.

Foster said in a written statement that he met Foley last year when she participated in a discussion he hosted on combating heroin abuse. He was inspired by her family’s story, he said.

“I am proud to have the opportunity to attend the Chris Walk and support the mission of combating heroin and substance abuse,” Foster said.

“It is clear that we are facing an epidemic of heroin abuse, and we need innovative solutions to counteract this

BATAVIA – The summer is about to heat up during the 22nd annual Illinois State Championship Chili Cookoff, which will be held at noon July 26 at the Batavia Riverwalk, Houston Street and North Island Avenue.

Admission is free, and the event is open to the public.

The event will have a slightly different format this year, as the Batavia Park District and the Batavia Chamber of Commerce are running the event this year.

In the past, contestants had not been able to put beans in their chili because of Chili Appreciation Society International rules. This year, organizers have added a new category – homestyle division, in which the no-bean rule doesn’t apply.

“You can put anything you want in it,” Batavia Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Holly Deitchman said. “We wanted to make it a community event that wasn’t as intimidating.”

BATAVIA – Those who go to Batavia’s Quilt and Textile Show this weekend will be able to take a trip down the historic Route 66.

A Route 66 traveling quilt exhibit is among the more than 150 historical and contemporary quilts that will be on display through Sunday as part of this weekend’s eighth annual Quilt and Textile Show at the Eastside Community Center and Shannon Hall, 14 N. Van Buren St., Batavia. The show started Friday afternoon.

Because of what he describes as an environmentally friendly approach to his work, Walsma, a 20-year resident of Geneva, said he likes to use scrap wood that otherwise would be thrown away. He said he is on the lookout for this wood all the time, whether it’s “dumpster diving” or stopping to pick up a piece on the side of the road, although he said he doesn’t take anything without asking permission first.

“There’s not a piece of wood I can’t do stuff with,” Walsma said. “Most of my thing is oriented towards showing people what they can [make] out of trash.”

As time passes, Walsma, 57, is growing his hobby into a job, with customers and craft show appearances. Two weeks ago, Walsma delivered his latest product for Geneva resident Mary Pat Wright. GENEVA – U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, hosted a veterans forum Friday morning at his Geneva district office to discuss the state of veterans affairs, including health care, mental health and surviving spouse benefits.

Julio A. “Tony” Vela, veterans service center manager at the Chicago Regional Benefit Office, spoke about how his office operates and how it has increased efficiency when it comes to processing claims. He said the regional office is 94 percent paperless and that part of making the claims service more efficient was increasing the quality of the training program used with employees. Vela said the average wait time for processing a claim in the Chicago regional office is 149 days.

The group of veteran service officers, representing each of the 14th Congressional District counties in Illinois, agreed that compensation and pension exams and examiners do not favor veterans, and there is a misunderstanding among such examiners as to the correct standard of proof needed to claim benefits.

Vela pointed out the regional office often gets the blame, but he said the health care system is where the problem lies.

A process Hultgren said needs streamlining is the communication of available programs and benefits to veterans.

Gene Klein, a Vietnam War veteran, talked about his experience of losing his partner while the VA benefit process dragged on. He said that after speaking to VA representatives he was told the claim no longer existed because the patient had become deceased.

Vela interrupted Klein and said that he was told the wrong information and that family members can pick up and continue claims in the name of their departed veteran.

“How many vets have died waiting on the process?” Klein asked. “The system is broken.”

Klein proposed the VA implement automatic approval of claims and appeals after certain time periods to force higher efficiency and ensure veterans receive the crucial aid they deserve. He said a policy such as that could alleviate the hor-

ror stories of veterans waiting three to five years for their appeals to be adjudicated.

After the meeting, Hultgren highlighted several things his office could do to assist veterans in his district and across the nation with federal legislation. He said after the Friday meeting and after visiting the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago that there were several things that concern him.

The appeals process – guaranteed to veterans, by law, who disagree with the initial claim decision – which can be slow; lack of communication on the exact process and services available; and inconsistent medical examinations are all issues that need to be addressed, Hultgren said.

The congressman said his office could step up with newsletters, emails and public events in the district to educate veterans on how to navigate the VA bureaucracy. He also pointed out how each state has its own VA problems and that blank checks and blanket solutions might not be the most efficient fixes. Hultgren said pilot programs for niche areas that test specific proposals were a good

said. Hull asked the officers to place Hochstetter under arrest, but Hochstetter was uncooperative, police reported.

Because of his continued resistance, security officers reportedly wrestled Hochstetter to the ground. Hochstetter, however, stiffened his arms and struggled against the handcuffing procedure, police reported.

Police said Hochstetter injured three officers in the struggle.

He was charged with three counts each of aggravated battery and aggravated resisting arrest – one count for each of the injured security personnel, police said.

Late Friday afternoon, online sheriff’s records indicated Hochstetter was being held in jail on $100,000 bond.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A South Elgin man who refused to approach the bench during a court hearing this week injured security officers as they struggled to arrest him on the judge’s orders, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

According to online Kane County court records, Scott T. Hochstetter was due before Associate Judge T. Clint Hull at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday for a 2012 case in which Hochstetter is accused of producing marijuana plants.

Hull asked Hochstetter to approach the bench, but the 32-year-old reportedly refused to identify himself and

did not come forward.

When the judge – who knew Hochstetter – verbally confronted him, Hochstetter “stood up and began to yell that he was not Scott Hochstetter, that he had constitutional rights to a jury trial and that he could not be t o u c h e d , ” p oScott T. Hochstetter lice reported.

OUR VIEW: THUMBS-UP/THUMBS-DOWN Thumbs-up to volunteers from a Campton Hills church who took part in service projects throughout the community as part of a special program.

Last weekend, more than 70 members of the Congregational United Church of Christ conducted community service projects, part of a program called “Jesus Has Left the Building … and We Are Following Him!” Participants worked at the Anderson Animal Shelter in South Elgin, Corron Farm in Campton Township, Garfield Farm Museum in Campton Hills, Marklund in Blackberry Township and the St. Charles Heritage Center in St. Charles. Volunteers also helped a church member in need at home.

Members kept busy performing tasks that needed to be done, and recipients were grateful. Lisa Mertz, program manager for the Campton Township Open Space program, described volunteers as “our workforce.”

It is a noble endeavor, worthy of praise. But it’s certainly not an isolated act of kindness in Kane County.

It’s not uncommon to hear of such programs in the Tri-Cities and Kaneland areas. There are those who volunteer at food pantries, churches, libraries, animal shelters and other places, and they help make our area a wonderful place to work and live.

The church program’s spirit is inspiring, and it’s something other groups can emulate. As important as it is to learn, study and identify the needs of those in a community, the time eventually will come for action.

It’s impressive to watch such plans go into action.

Thumbs-down to the potential expansion of video gambling in Kane County. Batavia aldermen have taken a step toward lifting the city’s ban after a request from the Batavia VFW. While video gambling would mean a little more money for local organizations or businesses that install gaming machines, there is a potential price for others. Gambling can be highly addictive, and it can hurt those who might be going through difficult times.

Batavia would be the first in the Tri-Cities to allow video gambling. Nearby communities in Kane County have lifted their bans, and video gambling now is allowed in Elburn, Maple Park, North Aurora, Sugar Grove and unincorporated areas of the county.

Establishments that are allowed to offer video gambling may have as many as five machines. And while Batavia’s city attorney Kevin Drendel did say the city could put limits on video gambling, such as allowing only licensed veterans organizations to offer it, 7th Ward Alderman Dave Brown said bar owners likely would request the machines, as well. Aldermen have directed staff to draft a resolution to allow video gambling in the city.

Dale Richard, a representative of the Batavia VFW, pointed to nearby organizations that have video gambling, and other businesses could do the same.

But it’s unfortunate that the answer seems to be more municipalities allowing more machines to be installed in more businesses.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR HAPPY MEMORIES OF THE FARM To the Editor: When I see children at play, I wonder what childhood memory will stand out for them when they reach adulthood.

My favorite is a series of spring and summer visits to a farm owned by friends of my parents in the 1930s. They did not realize what happy memories they created for me so long ago.

We usually awoke to the crowing of the barnyard rooster. Mondays were laundry day, without the modern conveniences of an automatic washer and dryer. The agitator in the washing machine was operated by a lever of some sort. The washed garments and linens were put through a ringer into a galvanized tub of cold water for rinsing and then the ringer process repeated once they had

rinsed them by hand.

I “helped” by following behind their daughters, handing them clothespins as they pegged the wash on the line. When gathering eggs, I was taught to distract the sitting hen with one hand and quickly grab the freshly laid egg beneath with the other. I often got pecked until I mastered the deft art.

In the morning and late afternoon, I accompanied one of their daughters to a nearby pasture to bring the cows in for milking. One time I ran ahead and spread the two pieces of barbed wire fence apart for my companion to crawl through; she just stood there, mouth agape. I later found out that it was an electric fence, and the reason I did not get a shock was because I was wearing crepesoled shoes!

time, when the cats and kittens gathered round waiting for a squirt of milk into their open mouths. I often was given a cup of milk, still warm from the cow. Today’s health nuts would be horrified at that!

Picked strawberries soon ended up in shortcake, but many more strawberries found their way into my mouth than into the container I was to use. The family never made me feel I was a nuisance and always praised me for my efforts.

I came across the following quote recently: “When you remember a past event, you are actually remembering the last time you remembered it, not the event itself.” I do not agree. I remember it with great fondness and clarity.

I hope children of today will have such happy memories.

‘OFF-THE-CHARTS GOOD’ Kane County dishes on handiwork of chef Williams

ENEVA – Cougars executive chef Jon Williams sprays to all food groups when concocting the club’s postgame spreads.

“Anywhere from chicken to hamburgers to turkey burgers to roast beef to barbecue stuff,” infielder David Bote began. “Mashed potatoes, vegetables, macaroni and cheese. I have no complaints.”

If Bote or any teammates were vexed with the vittles, it’s likely Williams would know. He seeks feedback at least once a homestand, entering the clubhouse for any culinary consultation from the staff.

Like his constituents, Williams usually leaves happy.

“As far as our home spread, it compares with a lot of Triple-A places I’ve been,” manager Mark Johnson said.

“It’s off-the-charts good.”

Williams, also the club’s director of catering, brings plenty of experience to an oft-overlooked role. Now in his 12th year with the Cougars – including seven as a full-time employee – he’s the one ensuring that the players who inspire the peanut- and cracker jack-eating Jon Williams faithful get sustenance from something more substantial than ballpark fare.

A protein, two sides and a salad provide the base for his menus, which are as diverse as ever in his fifth season as chef.

In the past, officials from the Cougars’ parent club typically offered restrictions or guidelines for what could be served. In 2014, the Cubs took no such action.

“This year, it’s been a lot more

interesting and more fun to do for players,” Williams said, “because they’ve opened it up to whatever I feel like making.”

One of his favorite meals to prepare is lasagna with house salad, garlic bread and green beans.

One of the players’ favorite items is the proverbial carrot of the flat steak with grilled asparagus and caesar salad offering. That dish wouldn’t be complete without the “baby baker,” a smaller version of the baked potato.

The Cougars especially welcomed baby bakers to the party on the night of June 7. Commissioned by the club to cook something special for the impending Western Division first-half title clincher, Williams added the item as a side dish to the main attraction – a cutting board station serving prime rib and roasted turkey.

“That was fun, because we’ve never really done that for them before,”

Williams said.

Almost six weeks later, the gesture still isn’t lost on the Cougars.

“That was really neat. It was really nice of them to do that,” right-hander Corbin Hoffner said. “They had real good food and stuff like that. Nice little accomplishment to do, and they just paid off for it.”

Williams also cooks postgame meals for the umpires and visiting field staff, offering the same food served in the Cougars’ clubhouse.

His pregame offerings for the Cougars consist of lighter fare – deli trays, grilled chicken, perhaps ravioli – for night games. For day games, when players must arrive at the ballpark when they’d typically be sleeping or eating breakfast, the clubhouse is well-stocked with cereal, fruits and vegetables.

Despite the move, the Stephens clan isn’t done with St. Charles quite yet – at least not Everette.

East enjoyed a strong summer led by returnees such as standout point guard Cole Gentry, fellow guards James McQuillan and Jake Asquini and forward Mick Vyzral.

“I’ve had a good ride with coach Woods, and I think we have a special team, and I want to be able to help him get the best of it because those type of special teams don’t come too often,” Everette Stephens said. “And

when I say special team, I mean probably the most talented team I’ve seen or been around since living in St. Charles, and not only that but they play the game the right way. It’s just a combination of good basketball.”

Woods expects to add a new assistant coach to the varsity mix to help compensate for Everette Stephens’ reduced role but Woods said retaining Stephens for another year is a major plus.

“He’s been a big part of what’s going to happen this year and I’m cautiously optimistic [about the season],” Woods said. “I think it’s going to be a good year.

I just want to kind of keep things going the direction they’re going, and it keeps him around for that.”

Kendall Stephens has momentum of his own that he’d like to keep snowballing.

averaged eight points a game for Purdue, tying for second in scoring among Big Ten freshmen.

“He was pleasantly surprised that he was freshman all-Big Ten,” Everette Stephens said. “He said he did better than he thought, but it’s so hard, the physicality.

He said ‘I know I can do more but I’m just not there physically. I want to do more so I’ve got to get stronger.’ ” If eating home-cooked meals are part of that equation, Kendall should have plenty of opportunities in the years to come.

Williams keeps meals ‘diverse’ challenges of life on the road, he has yet to hear Cougars strength and conditioning coach Ed Kohl deliver the humbling news that a player looks under-nourished or is in need of a diet.

That’s happened before during his tenure, prompting Williams to follow a specific menu for the player in question.

Lately, during the salad days of his Cougars career, he saves that attention to detail for after the game.

“I’ve been just trying to put a little bit of everything in there, you know,” Williams said. “Mexican, Italian, American. Trying to keep it diverse.”

Everette Stephens and Kay Stephens are moving to West Lafayette, Indiana, which is just fine with their son, Kendall.

“He was just hoping we don’t move into his dorm room,” Everette Stephens joked.

Kendall Stephens, a St. Charles East graduate, was an all-Big Ten freshman guard for the Purdue men’s basketball team last winter.

His parents made it to plenty of games but will have a considerably smoother ride to games once they complete their move to Indiana in the coming week.

It’ll be a homecoming for Everette and Kay – Everette starred at Purdue before making it to the NBA, while Kay is from West Lafayette and still has family in the area.

How did you get involved with Midwest Elite?

Actually I used to play for a club called Illinois Lady Lightning and we just decided it wasn’t a great fit for my next two years so we were looking around, and I know a lot of my friends who play at other schools recommended Midwest Elite to us and we tried it out. … And we just really liked the coaches and the program, and decided it would be a good fit.

Believe you just played an event at McCormick Place (in Chicago); how did that go?

What would you say are the biggest differences between AAU and high school ball?

I just think level of play is different because in high school there are some good players on every team but very rarely do you ever have a full team of all high level, college level, basketball players. That’s why club is so exciting. You’re going to

It was interesting to see how our team responded to not having [Fruendt] because we depended on her a lot to score and be kind of a team leader. So we did well, I think, better than I think a lot of people expected us to because they didn’t realize we do have a lot of other people who can step up, and I think a lot of people did that.

We did well for not having our biggest scorer from [last] season.

Along those lines, I’m sure you’ll be much more of a focal point for defenses next year.

How do you plan to rise to that

challenge?

We’ve been doing a lot as a team, a lot of our focus over our summer camp and a lot of what we do has been all about defense and getting faster and stronger and more able to stop teams from scoring because if you’re not going to be able to score a lot, you better not let the other team [score].

But I think we will have an offensive threat. You’ve got to be able to do both. … I think our team will be pretty great this year.

Do you have a favorite summer activity, not counting basketball?

I don’t know that I really have one. I guess hanging out with my friends because when you’re traveling a lot you don’t see them a ton, but that’s what I do with my free time.

Batavia girls basketball forward Hannah Frazier enjoyed a breakout sophomore year, though the 6-foot-2 post force was able to be a secondary threat behind reigning Kane County Chronicle Girls Basketball of the Year Liza Fruendt, who has since graduated. This summer, Frazier is working toward becoming a go-to performer for the Bulldogs, having played with Batavia’s summer team in June and now focusing on AAU basketball with the Midwest Elite, a Deerfield-based team that has upcoming tournaments in Washington, D.C., and Augusta, Georgia.

In this week’s Weekend Chit-chat, Frazier spoke with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab about her AAU season and moving on now that Fruendt is at Missouri State.

Of course, Schwarber made it easy to follow along no matter his comportment by batting .380 with two home runs, seven RBIs and a 1.035 OPS in 15 home games.

Smith since has been on the move himself, leaving his home state university after nearly a decade to take the job at Arizona State.

Before he left, he still had time to shake his head about how some in baseball reacted to the Cubs taking Schwarber with the fourth overall pick. While his offensive talents were considered first-round worthy, Schwarber’s defensive ambiguity raised several eyebrows.

Schwarber made it clear he wants

to catch above all but will play wherever the organization puts him. Smith was equally adamant about his former player’s ceiling.

“I think it was funny listening to a lot of the talking heads and even people in the Chicago area wondering who this guy is and questioning the Chicago Cubs for taking this kid called Kyle Schwarber,” Smith said.

“I’ve been quietly sitting back and laughing. That’s who he is. He’s a tremendous hitter and a talented baseball player.”

Outfielder Kevin Brown describes himself as “definitely a northeast grinder kind of guy,” a nod both to his plate approach and his Northborough, Massachusetts, upbringing.

Brown rooted for the Boston Red Sox as a child – “If you didn’t, it was a tough life growing up for you there,” he said – which means he wasn’t particularly keen on his own name at one point.

Veteran right-hander Kevin Brown, who closed his career with the nemesis New York Yankees from 2004 to ’05, proved more heady than the future minor leaguer when he injured his nonpitching hand punching a clubhouse wall nearly 10 years ago.

“I mean, it was tough when he punched that wall. The wall always wins,” the Cougars’ Brown said. “But, you know, I won’t be punching any walls anytime soon.”

Patrolling the grass in front of outfield walls is safer and suits Brown, a Bryant (R.I.) College product, best.

“He’s just stepped right in,” manager Mark Johnson said. “He’s a real grindy kind of guy that has real good at-bats, an older college kid that plays real hard and is a great teammate.”

Noteworthy The Cougars have not lost a home series in 2014, winning 14 of 15. The club split a four-game series against Quad Cities from May 15 to 18. Seven home series remain: two against Quad Cities and one each against South Bend, West Michigan, Burlington, Clinton and Peoria. ... Everyone knows OBP, or on-base percentage, as one of baseball’s telltale offensive statistics.

In the six weeks since the Cubs drafted him, catcher-outfielder Kyle Schwarber has made headway toward introducing a similar-sounding cousin.

What do you figure is the staying power of GBP, or games between promotions?

Schwarber carried an average of 14 GBP when the Cubs sent him from the Class-A Cougars to Advanced-A Daytona on Monday night. His stint in 23 games with Kane County included a .361 batting average, four home runs and 15 RBIs. Do the math, and that means he played five games at Short-A Boise, where he batted .600 while launching four home runs with 10 RBIs. Schwarber’s stay in Daytona figures to be his longest yet, but that surely won’t keep fans from counting.

When Schwarber tweeted “Thank you to the @KCCougars players, coaches and fans for being great to me in my stay here at Kane County! #cougs” a few hours after Monday’s matinee against Beloit, the context of promotion was implied, but still uncertain.

After all, he had tweeted “Thank you to @hamiltonwatch for the awesome watch! #legit!” earlier that night. Couldn’t this just be a nice Midwestern young man living up to the reputation his college coach, Tracy Smith, observed at Indiana for three seasons?

“You are who you are,” Smith said after last month’s Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. “I think he was certainly rewarded for that, for being a good person, not just a good baseball player.

“I can’t tell you how many emails I would get from a random person who said Kyle took the time to talk with my son or sign an autograph. He’s a down-to-earth, down-to-earth guy.”

By SETH GRUEN sgruen@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Most NBA players are willing to win at all costs. That is until – ahem, Carmelo Anthony – it actually does cost.

Although the Bulls didn’t have enough in the bank to win out on the Anthony sweepstakes, free-agent forward Pau Gasol was willing to win no matter the price.

In fact, he actually put a price on the chance to win – turning down more lucrative deals to come to the Bulls and leave longtime friend and teammate Kobe Bryant in Los Angeles for a chance to add to his collection of championship rings.

“Money wasn’t obviously the priority here,” Gasol said at his introductory news conference Friday at the United Center. “So I turned down bigger offers and I prioritized being [on] a championship-caliber team and being in a position where I can really, hopefully, push that team over the top with my game.”

Turns out Gasol isn’t the only one in the picture who had to give a little.

Taj Gibson, who for the past four seasons gave way to the ego of Carlos Boozer by coming off the bench, was told to prepare to be the starter over the summer.

Now that Gasol signed, Gibson likely will remain the Bulls’ sixth man.

Rose, who talked on the phone with Gasol about his health after a second season-ending knee injury and the prospect of the two linking up together in Chicago.

That was quite the switch from the introverted Rose who told Yahoo Sports about three weeks ago that he wouldn’t be involved in the recruitment of players. Joakim Noah was the most vocal of Bulls players, flying out to Los Angeles to join in the organization’s in-person pitch to Gasol.

“Their humility also, how humble they were and they are, I think that’s really important to not have big egos,” Gasol said. “That makes things a lot easier.

“They’re hungry to win.

That’s something that I want-

ed to also come into. Be a part of a hungry team, a team that is willing to do whatever it takes.”

And although Anthony still wasn’t exactly willing to do whatever it takes – at least when it came to winning in Chicago – the Knicks’ forward did do enough to help the Bulls.

Gasol said he had spoken to Anthony on the phone as well in an effort to gauge his decision. Reportedly, Anthony was weighing offers from the Bulls, Knicks and Lakers.

Had Anthony signed with the Lakers, that could have swayed Gasol to stay in Los Angeles.

Turns out the Bulls may have been the better fit for the aging veteran anyway.

At 34, Gasol acknowledged that managing his minutes is of more importance. He comes to a team with ready-made depth in the frontcourt.

Although he didn’t anticipate all three playing together, coach Tom Thibodeau said Gasol, Noah and Gibson will all have major roles. That will alleviate the pressure on Gasol to have to play big minutes.

Either way, he brings a much-needed championship pedigree to the roster.

“He’s played at a championship level, and that’s important as well,” Thibodeau said.

“You’re looking for veteran leadership and it’s not necessarily the things that they’re saying. It’s more the things they’re doing.”

St. Charles East cheerleaders earn NCA All-America honors

Schneider, Bultema win at Run and Walk More than 100 walkers and 332 runners participated in the Great Western Freedom 4 Run and Walk for Lazarus House on July 4 at LeRoy Oakes.

Alyssa Schneider from Bartlett had the fastest time for a female at 24:07.08 and was followed by Denise Hefferin of St. Charles (24:32.69) and Elena Shemyakina of Geneva, (25:03.22).

The fastest time in the male division went to Graham Bultema of San Luis Obispo, California – and formerly from St. Charles – with a time of 21:09.33. He was followed by Alex Arman of St. Charles (21:18.47) and Ed Izaguirre of Santa Fe Springs, California (21:46.86).

Awards were also given in several age categories for both female and male runners for first through third place.

Lazarus House would like to thank everyone that participated, donated pledges, volunteered and sponsored the event. All proceeds benefitted Lazarus House, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that provides emergency shelter, transitional living and rental/utility assistance to persons who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless and are connected to Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles or western rural Kane County.

Several St. Charles East varsity cheerleaders were recognized July 10 by the National Cheerleading Association as All-Americans. The NCA All-American Cheerleading Team consists of cheerleaders who are nominated by the NCA staff based on their individual skills including stunting, jumps, tumbling and motions. Once nominated for this achievement, athletes must complete a detailed try-out to be considered for All-American status. NCA staff chose St. Charles East varsity cheerleaders Kyanna McClinton, Megan Rozylowicz, Lauren Mende, Alexia Stelmar, Kennedy Gift, Marissa LaGioia, Miranda Doria, Peyton Zylke, Olivia Lutz, Julia Daley and Molly Kresl to be honored as 2014-2015 NCA All-Americans. As a member of the All-American Cheer Team, these athletes may participate in various special events throughout the year which may include exclusive performance opportunities in the Walt Disney World Christmas Parade and Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, both of which are televised.

This whole “my kid has his driver’s license” thing sure is fascinating. But maybe fascinating isn’t quite the right word.

For one thing, after 16 years with the same company and no claims, when I added Noah to our car insurance policy last week, the premium more than doubled. Whoa. With safe driving, a lot of prayers and a little luck, it won’t climb any higher. Noah’s a very good driver, but, still, he’s a NEW driver. I remember when I was a sparkly, new driver. Yup. That shocker aside, there are perks to having a child with increased independence (a child! A child is driving a car! By himself! Hey, anyone else rattled by that? Anyone?), besides the happy glow of his shiny new confidence.

“Got any errands I can run?” he asked, a few hours after he got his driver’s license.

My friends told me it would be like this, but having it actually happen is really kind of thrilling. It’s only been a week, and I’ve yet to realize all of the benefits of his enthusiasm for driving.

I liken it to having a smartphone and

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose not yet being acquainted with all of its cool features. The possibilities are endless. He’s been pumping gas for a while (hallelujah!), but a few days ago, just because I could, I had him run down to the gas station on the corner to vacuum out the car. Doesn’t seem that long ago, when I said “no” when he asked if he and his buddies could walk to that very same gas station to buy sodas.

Where has the time gone?

Surely there are other errands I can have him run before the novelty wears off. In the meantime, he’s conjuring other ideas about places he can drive, without the crazy-anxious parentals on-board. I’m reminded of that Dr. Seuss book, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go.” Here are the opening lines: “Congratulations! Today is your day. You’re off to Great Places! You’re

off and away!

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.

“You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.

“You’ll look up and down streets.

Look ’em over with care. About some you will say, ‘I don’t choose to go there.’

“With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet, you’re too smart to go down any not-so-good street.”

Every parent’s prayer, right? If I’m honest, though, it’s not so much Noah’s driving that worries me, but everyone else’s. Sigh. That darned “Student Driver” sticker is staying put until Holly flies the coop. A few days ago Noah asked if he could drive to a pond in Elburn, to go fishing with the new fishing pole he bought on his birthday.

“Ah, not quite ready for that,” I said, wincing.

“Mom, I’m ready. I’ll be fine,” he said.

“You may be, but I’m not,” I con-

fessed, hand to heart. “Don’t worry, hon, I’ll get there.”

The next time he asked, though, when he said he wanted to bring one of his fishing buddies along, I said yes.

A few hours later, as he sorted his new lures on the living-room floor, I realized what I’d done.

“Hey, didn’t I just say, like, YESTERDAY, that I wasn’t ready for you to do that?” I asked.

“Yup,” he said, shrugging.

His buddy grinned. They ended up not going, this time, as it turned out they had to get home too soon to make the trek out to Elburn worthwhile, but still, I said yes. That’s a head-scratcher. What possessed me to change my mind so quickly? For Pete’s sake, I can still see Noah as a toddler, motoring along in his Little-Tikes Cozy Coupe on the patio behind our house. So, what possessed me? I got ready, I guess.

Geesh, that happened fast.

Mini marvels: Fairy gardening trend fun for adults, kids Fairy gardening has taken the country by storm. Maybe it’s because it is a great way to get kids in the garden; maybe it’s because gardening in a very small place is manageable even by the busiest people; maybe it’s because adults like playing as if they were kids again. Whatever the reason miniature gardening is here to stay.

If you’re new to miniature gardening, start by deciding if you want to use a container or include it in an existing garden. If a container will house your miniature garden, only your imagination can limit what you choose. Decide on the theme of your garden. Will it be formal or whimsical, cottagey or contemporary? Will it utilize natural accessories or brightly colored decorations?

Your container should reflect the style of your garden.

If you are placing your garden in an existing garden, choose a site close to a sitting area where you will be able to enjoy it. Or tuck it away along a pathway where visitors will be delighted when they come upon it unexpectedly. Maybe it will be in a secret location that only you and your grandchildren can find.

Next, choose the plants that will form the ceiling, walls and floors of your garden.

Dwarf conifers are often used to give needed structure. Be sure to check the growth rate of preferred candidates. Even dwarf conifers can get very large over time.

Only include dwarf conifers with a growth rate of an inch or two a year unless you are willing to move them into the “normal-sized” landscape as they outgrow their home in your miniature garden.

Rosemary or tiny boxwood starts can form the walls of a fairy house; thyme or moss creates a soft carpet.

Add tiny-flowering annuals and perennials for color.

Try perennials like campanula, catmint and dianthus. Consider annuals like impatiens, million bells and vinca. Imagine what types of flowers fairies might use for their skirts, hats, pillows and blankets and share these stories with your children.

Purchase a ready-made miniature cottage or fashion one from an old stump. Create patios and pathways from gravel, wood slices or small pieces of flagstone.

‘Planes’ sequel doesn’t quite take off

By JEN CHANEY Special to The Washington Post “Planes: Fire & Rescue” appears to be a cartoon that’s designed for kids, and designed to sell anthropomorphized helicopter toys to kids. To be clear, it is both of those things. But this sequel – which improves slightly on its lazy predecessor, last year’s “Planes” – is also a movie made to appeal to the middle-aged, particularly those who enjoy watching an animated air show set to the sound of AC/DC. With a narrative that focuses on planes and choppers launching second careers in the dangerous world of wildfire-fighting, “Planes: Fire & Rescue” touches on some of the same themes as “Cars,” the 2006 Disney and Pixar film that inspired these airborne DisneyToon Studios spinoffs.

While the Lightning McQueen story celebrated the seemingly forgotten values of traditional, small-town America, the second “Planes” emphasizes the importance of reinventing the old and finding power in things – particularly aircraft with adorably animated eyeballs – that have been around for a while.

That doesn’t make “Planes: Fire & Rescue” a wildly better movie than “Planes,” an exercise in family-fare cliches in which a crop-duster realized that he could achieve great heights at great speed if he just believed in himself.

But that subtext does make it a slightly more interesting one, even though most of the children at whom this release is ostensibly aimed won’t get any of its best jokes, which riff on cop shows from the ’70s and pickup trucks that use bad pickup lines in vehicular country-line-dancing bars.

Dusty, the aforementioned crop-duster (voiced by Dane Cook), returns in “Planes: Fire & Rescue” and initially seems ready to continue his reign as a world-champion racer.

That leads to a spectacular crash that causes an even more spectacular fire at his airport home base in Propwash Junction.

Mayday, the aging resident fire engine with the voice of Hal Holbrook, successfully puts out the flames but still attracts the attention of safety officials, who shut down the airport until Mayday can upgrade and Propwash Junction can find a second flame extinguisher. That’s when a shaken Dusty steps up, traveling to a facility near Piston Peak National Park so that he can train with Blade Ranger, a flaming-red fire-and-rescue helicopter with the voice of Ed Harris. Cue the scene where Dusty is suddenly flung into a smoke-filled wildfire while AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” blasts through the multiplex speakers.

Dusty’s new adventure

allows him to once again learn a new skill set and enables the animators to depict the devastation of rapidly spreading flames with daunting yet kid-friendly realism. Even in a film as simplistically plotted as “Planes: Fire & Rescue,” the Disney animators still take great care to capture the majestic beauty in the jagged landscapes and towering conifers of the Yellowstone-esque Piston Peak Park.

Unfortunately, the same contours and shading don’t apply to the characters in “Planes: Fire & Rescue.” A whole new fleet of flying and motoring beings debut here (translation: more toys!), including the spunky Dipper (Julie Bowen), a super-scooper who’s obsessed with Dusty and adds modest dashes of humor at moments when the story needs them. But none of them are particularly memorable, and, ultimately, neither is the movie.

Via a title card that opens the film, “Planes: Fire & Res-

cue” announces itself as a tale dedicated to the courageous firefighters who regularly risk their lives to save others. And while the story pays homage to them, as well as to elder statesmen and stateswomen who find second acts through selfless work, the movie never digs deeply enough to make those messages really resonate. The whole thing just zips by in an 84-minute flurry of flames doused and triumphs won that, if it lives on in the memory at all, will likely be all mixed up with recollections of “Planes.”

That’s the risk of pushing out a sequel less than 12 months after the original came out: Unlike the wildfire battlers in “Fire & Rescue,” the franchise hasn’t been around long enough to know how to truly soar in new directions.

The film runs 84 minutes, and is rated PG for action and some peril.

Women with osteoporosis diagnosis can lower fracture risk Dear Doctor K: I’m a 63-yearold woman, and recently I had a screening test for osteoporosis.

My “T-score” was minus 2.7.

What does this mean?

Dear Reader: In the past, osteoporosis – a thinning of the bones – was frequently diagnosed only after a bone fracture.

Today, osteoporosis can be detected earlier with a bone mineral density test.

Several tests can assess bone density.

The most common, considered the gold standard for osteoporosis screening, is known as “dual energy X-ray absorptiometry” (DEXA). For this test, a machine sends X-rays through your bones in order to calculate bone density.

The DEXA scan gives you a number called a T-score. Your T-score represents how your bone density compares with that of a woman at peak bone density.

Doctors use the following guidelines to interpret your results: • If your T-score is minus 1 or greater: Your bone density is

• If your T-score is between minus 1 and minus 2.5: You have low bone density, known as osteopenia, but you don’t have osteoporosis.

• If your T-score is minus 2.5 or less: You have osteoporosis.

In addition to low bone mineral density, the following factors increase your chance of getting a fracture: • Low body mass index (BMI) • Family and/or personal history of fractures • Increasing age • Falls • Rheumatoid arthritis • Certain medications, particularly corticosteroids (such as prednisone), thyroid medicines, warfarin and SSRI antidepressants • Early menopause Now that you know you have osteoporosis, take steps to lower your fracture risk: • Get enough calcium and vitamin D. Dairy foods, salm-

on, kale and spinach will help you get the recommended 1,200 milligrams of calcium every day. Add a glass of fortified orange juice or low-fat milk, or take vitamin D supplements to help you reach the 800 to 1,000 international units of vitamin D you also need.

• Do weight-bearing exercises. Climbing stairs, walking around the park, playing tennis or dancing are all weight-bearing exercises that strengthen bones.

• Skip the soda. Some studies suggest colas can contribute to bone loss.

• Don’t smoke. It can lead to bone loss. If you get a fracture, it will take longer to heal.

• Limit alcohol to one drink or less a day. Heavy drinking weakens bones.

Because your T-score indicates that you have osteoporosis, your doctor may also recommend drug therapy to slow bone loss.

Teen tired of being ‘bear’ to wake up in the morning Dr. Wallace: I am basically a pleasant person except when I wake up in the morning. I enjoy school, but every morning, Mom has to drag me out of bed by a leg and an arm. It doesn’t make any difference how long I sleep; I’m still a bear to wake up.

Even after I’m up, I’m grouchy, and I know I sometimes hurt mom’s feelings. Once I’m at school I’m fine and I enjoy my day. It’s just those morning “blahs.”

Dear Nameless: You belong to an exclusive group of about 125 million Americans and Canadians, me included. I’ve tried hard to be cheery in the early morning, but for a while nothing had worked.

Then a few years ago I tried this new remedy: The instant I wake up I take a quick shower. After donning my walking clothes, I head outside and walk briskly for five miles. I then take a brisk, cool shower and eat a well-balanced, nutritious breakfast.

My life has changed dramatically. I am now a very clean guy and my morning walk has improved my stamina and helps keep my weight down to 180 pounds (I’m 6’ tall). All this is good, but my wife informs me that my shower, exercise and eating habits have done little to eliminate my grumpy morning behavior!

Dr. Wallace: The guy I’m seeing is basically wonderful. I met him last year at a mutual friend’s wedding. He was

We have discussed marriage, but it never got to the “serious” stage.

Last night he said that he loved me and would seriously consider marrying me, but only if I would quit smoking 100 percent. I thought that was reasonable and it gave me something to think about. Then came the “bomb shell.”

He said that if I didn’t stop smoking forever in a month he would stop seeing me.

If he had given me a year to quit I might have considered giving up smoking, but making it a month is unacceptable.

That is an interesting thought – but do you agree?

First, look at today’s West hand. What would you lead against three no-trump?

This auction must be by far the most common that ends in a game contract.

Length and majors rule in this situation. So, West should lead a spade. But since his suit contains no honor, he should choose the nine, top of nothing when the top two cards are touching. (With, say, 9-7-6-4 of spades, he would lead the seven, second-highest.)

Now look at the North and East hands. How should East plan the defense after declarer calls for dummy’s spade four?

East, reading the lead, should realize that South has the spade jack and queen. So, there is no point in winning with the ace and playing another spade. There won’t be time to establish and run the spades. After taking the first trick, East should shift to the heart queen. And as you can see, that works rather well, resulting in down two.

Finally, did you notice South’s one chance? At trick one, under East’s spade ace, he should drop his jack or queen, trying to look like someone who started with queen-jack-doubleton. Then East will be sorely tempted to return his spade 10, which lets the contract make.

Declarer should try to make the defenders misread the deal.
