Extraterrestrial bug? No, it’s a dobsonfly GOOD NATURED Pam Erickson Otto Editor’s note: This column is an update of a piece that originally ran in July 2009.

I still can remember my first dobsonfly.

The date was July of 2002.

The place, Red Oak Nature Center in North Aurora. The insect was contained within a two-quart Tupperware bowl – with holes poked in the lid for ventilation. The woman carrying it clearly was unsettled, her voice quavering as she described how the “alien” creature had landed on her screen door.

Judging by the way she emphasized the word, it was clear she did not mean the bug came from another country; in fact, she seemed pretty darn sure the critter was not of this world at all.

Her words tumbled out in a rush, and although I don’t recall the exact conversation, I do remember her using the words “cosmic journey” and “some other planet.” Her father and two children had accompanied her on her mission, and nodded solemnly as she recounted “E.T.’s” discovery and capture.

A male dobsonfly, impressive in his own right, appears even more so when situated next to a tube of lip balm, which measures 2.5 inches long.

Looking into the Tupperware, I could kind of see her point. The creature looked very unlike any of our “regular” summer bugs.

It measured nearly 5 inches in length, and its long, veinstreaked wings were speckled with small white dots – perhaps stardust, and proof of the insect’s intergalactic trek, the children said.

But its most conspicuous feature was its front jaws, or mandibles. They were thick and pointed and

looked quite capable of giving a good pinch. They also were the reason, I suspect, for the heavy leather gloves the woman had stuffed in her back pocket.

It took some convincing, but we finally got the family to agree to take their “extraterrestrial” bug home, put it back on the screen where they found it, and let it get down to business – namely,

making more dobsonflies.

After the little group left, we – the geeky naturalists – got down to our business, which was learning more about the amazing insect we had previously read about but, until the family’s arrival, never had been privileged to meet.

Dobsonflies are impressive creatures indeed. Far from alien, they are an integral part of our native fauna.

Found on land as adults, they spend the majority of their lifespan as larvae, underwater. This phase lasts so long – two or three years in our area, and up to five in cold or intermittent streams – the larvae even have their own names. Most commonly called hellgrammites, they also are known as go-devils or conniption bugs. Given the larvae’s prominent – and powerful – mandibles, it doesn’t take a lot of imagination to picture the incidents that led up to these descriptive common names.

One of nature’s strictest rules is Eat or Be Eaten and, despite their fierce appearance, hellgrammites are not above the law. Prowling the depths of rivers and streams, they consume their fair share of underwater insects

Tornado siren installed at Wasco Elementary

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – A new sound has come to Campton Hills.

A tornado siren – the village’s first – was installed at Wasco Elementary School, 4N782 School St., in April and was first tested at 10 a.m. July 7, Village Administrator Jennifer Johnsen said.

The location was chosen based on the number of residents it could reach, she said, adding it also can be heard by those at nearby Bell-Graham Elementary School.

“It just made a lot of sense,” Johnsen said, noting the village had St. Charles School District 303’s cooperation.

Residents have long shown

an interest in obtaining an emergency warning siren for the village. In 2012, about twothirds of voters supported a referendum question directing Campton Hills to investigate the purchase and installation of such equipment.

“The Village Board is really enthusiastic about this project,” Johnsen said.

“We’ve been looking for ways to provide additional services to the residents at no cost.”

The actual siren was donated by Fulton Technology in Roselle, Johnsen said, noting a Cities for Service grant covered the installation costs.

As part of the $30,000 grant, she said, the village recruited and trained emergency preparedness volunteers and sent emergency preparedness

booklets to community members.

The siren will be tested at 10 a.m. the first Tuesday of every month. The two entities responsible for activating the siren – the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District and the Campton Hills Police Department – will alternate months, Fire Chief Greg Benson said.

He said the alarm will be activated when there is a real threat of tornadoes or when one has been sighted. He stressed the siren does not replace weather radios or other weather alert systems, such as a smartphone app, because it is designed to warn those outside.

“It’s a great addition to the community,” Benson said.

Forever Yogurt opens in Geneva

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Forever Yogurt opened recently at 507 S. Third St., Geneva, in the space formerly occupied by Caribou Coffee.

The Geneva location is the second for manager Darcy Brown, as Forever Yogurt, at 117 W. Main St., St. Charles, recently marked its second year in business.

The shop’s opening followed remodeling of the former coffee shop into a frozen yogurt store.

“It’s doing fine, a little slower than we thought, but people are finding us – slowly but surely,” Brown said.

The Geneva store has 10 flavors and about 30 toppings, and more coffee and smoothies, Brown said. The store uses FreshGround, a local coffee roaster in Geneva, she said, both cold and hot.

“It’s so aromatic and wonderful,” Brown said. “We cold brew iced coffee from them that is unbelievable. We do want people to know they can come to that same corner and have their coffee.”

CHILLING AT THE FAIR

Despite heat, those at fairgrounds find ways to keep cool

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Bailey Martenson had hoped this week would have been cool.

The 18-year-old Shabbona resident is showing six pigs – three gilts and three barrows – in the Kane County Fair, and hot weather means she must work to keep them cool.

“They get hot so easily,” she said Friday during a round of spraying them with water.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory until 8 p.m. today, the second-to-last day of the Kane County Fair.

Temperatures are expected to reach the 90s, and the forecasted peak heat indices are 105 to 110 degrees, according to the weather service.

Andrew Pauley, a paramedic working the fair’s first aid station Friday, advised fairgoers to drink water, wear sunscreen and stay in the shade when possible.

“Come here to cool off,” he said. “We can take care of you here.”

The first aid station is on the east side of the fairgrounds. It is air conditioned, as are exhibit halls.

Martenson and others showing animals brought cooling supplies, such as fans and water bottles, to keep their livestock comfortable.

During hot weather spells, 17-year-old Bailey Hunt said it’s easier to care for his pigs at home than at the fair. Not only is the barn at home cooler, he said, but the pigs also can help themselves to water.

At the fair, the Sycamore teen is up at 6 a.m. to water the animals. He feeds them at 7 a.m. and waters them hourly thereafter, especially on a hot day such as Friday, he said.

Board to continue to discuss forest preserve district request

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – The Elburn Village Board on Monday will continue to consider a potential purchase by the Forest Preserve District of Kane County that has faced opposition.

The forest preserve district seeks to buy the property at 1001 S. Main St., which is the location of the former Patten rental facility. It is just south of Keslinger Road on Route 47.

The entire parcel is 9.14 acres, with the south parcel in unincorporated Kane County. The forest preserve district needs the village’s permission to buy the land within Elburn.

The Elburn Village Board meets at 6:45 p.m. Monday at Elburn Village Hall, 301 E. North St., Elburn.

The forest preserve district aims to make the property a new home for the district’s Natural Resources Department. Opponents have said the location would be better suited for commercial development.

Also, three people spoke against the proposal during the public comment portion of the meeting, including Gale Pavlak, a member of the Kaneland School District 302 Board.

Pavlak said allowing the purchase would have an impact on the school district because the forest preserve district would be exempt from paying taxes on the property.

Previously, officials from the forest preserve district offered to help with projects that would benefit Elburn, including a pedestrian bridge on Third Street.

But board members who spoke at the meeting said they were not ready to approve the purchase. Trustee Jeff Walter said his support was “waning.”

Harris “Sandy” Pierce of Carmine, Texas, age 68, formerly of St. Charles, IL, passed away on Wednesday, July 15, in his home.

He was a graduate of St. Charles High School, and served in the Army in Vietnam.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Jessie Pierce; and a sister, Jeannie Valent.

He is survived by his loving sisters, Catherine (Charles) Shumway of St. Charles, IL, Madonna Morris of Galveston, TX, Alon Dieter of Warrenville, IL; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held in Carmine, TX, to be announced at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice or The Cancer Foundation.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles location of a popular Chicago-area restaurant chain is scheduled to open next month.

Buona Beef will open at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 4 at 2425 W. Main St., St. Charles, Assistant Marketing Director Jimmy Buonavolanto wrote in an email. This is the 15th Buona Beef restaurant to open in the Chicago area and the westernmost location for the chain.

They also have a sensitive side: Hellgrammites are vulnerable to pollution. They breathe through delicate, tufted tracheal gills, structures that are easily fouled by chemicals or too much sediment.

Sad to say, we don’t see a lot of hellgrammites – or dobsonflies – here in the Tri-Cities. So when one shows up, it’s noteworthy. Just as I still remember my first dobsonfly from years ago, I’m probably not going to forget the larva that we found last week.

As big as my pinky, with pinching jaws shaped liked sickles, the young insect was plucked from a rushing riffle in Ferson Creek by participants in our Rod N Reel Nature Camp. We placed the larva temporarily in a white dish pan, where we could observe its movements.

Without any rocks to cling to or hide under, the creature quickly latched onto the nearest object it could find, which happened to be a large rusty crayfish (Orconectes rusticus, that is, not an iron crayfish that was left out in the rain).

The crayfish reacted equally and oppositely, shooting backward across the pan and dislodging the “conniption bug,” which then proceeded to have a conniption of its own.

Flailing about the pan, the hellgrammite gave us brief glimpses of its intricate underparts – those gills, which are adapted to well-oxygenated waters; and two sets of hooks, which it uses to cling to the underside of rocks in streams.

And then there were those mandibles – so powerful in this life stage, they are used to crush prey (everything from fish and tadpoles to invertebrates such as caddisfly larvae and small crayfish).

We were amazed, for sure, and one of the kids suggested we try to keep it as a pet. But, knowing how rare hellgram-

mites are in our area, we decided we didn’t want to stress the little guy out any more than we already had, so back to its riffle it went.

Strangely enough, this episode actually was my second encounter this summer with the normally rare dobsonfly.

The first occurred when we traveled with our Go 4 It campers up to Apple River Canyon State Park, near Galena.

Walking underneath a bridge there, we found an adult dobsonfly clinging to a concrete abutment. A couple of kids shrieked, and one initially refused to get close. But our oohs and aahs eventually inspired even the most squeamish of the group to move in for a closer look at a species none of them had seen before. This individual, a male, possessed a set of long, ice tong-like mandibles. They were impressive for sure, but because of their large size were incapable of any useful movement. Rather, their only function at this point is to serve as an indication

of breeding fitness to female dobsonflies.

As adults, dobsonflies live just a short time – maybe a couple of weeks – and likely don’t feed. Their sole purpose is to find a mate and allow the circle of life to begin again.

We took some photos, wished the insect well, and went on our merry way.

With any luck, the dobsonfly we found was successful in his mating mission. Good thing, because I’m sure he’s gone by now, where all good go-devils go, up to that Big Riffle in the Sky. His offspring will live on though, as will his presence in the kids’ summer camp memories. Years from now, I bet they’ll still remember their first dobsonfly.

Advisory warns of brutal weather KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today in an area that includes Kane County.

The weather forecast calls for a high temperature of 93 degrees.

According to the advisory, “the combination of heat and humidity will create oppressive conditions, which may cause heat-related illnesses to develop due to prolonged exposure.” It warns the heat could particularly affect “the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.”

Several significant outdoor events are set in Kane County this weekend, including the Kane County Fair.

The advisory urges those who will work or spend time outside to take precautions, including: • Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

• Stay out of the sun.

• Check up on relatives and neighbors.

The advisory also warns “children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during hot weather when the car interior can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.”

Murray’s Inc. recalling chicken nuggets

About 20,000 pounds of a Murry’s Inc. chicken nugget product is being recalled because of possible contamination, according to a release from the Kane County Health Department.

The recall affects 12-ounce boxes of “Bell & Evans Gluten Free Breaded Chicken Breast Nuggets” with a “best by” date of March 25, 2016. It bears the establishment number “P516” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The product tested positive for staphylococcal enterotoxin.

Staphylococcal food poisoning is a gastrointestinal illness, and

thoroughly cooking the product does not prevent illness.

Symptoms usually develop within one to six hours after eating contaminated food, the release stated.

BATAVIA – A polo match that had been set to take place Sunday at Blackberry Polo Field has been rescheduled.

The event, which will benefit the Batavia Arts Council and Shakespeare on Clark, now will be Aug. 2.

It was postponed because of the field’s condition. Recent rains have made the field too muddy to play on, said Julane Sullivan, founder and director of Shakespeare on Clark.

The Blackberry Polo Field is on Bliss Road, just south of Main Street, in Blackberry Township.

After being on hiatus for a year, Shakespeare on Clark will return this month in a

new home – the courtyard of the Batavia Fine Arts Centre, on the Batavia High School campus, at 1201 Main St. Shakespeare on Clark previously was presented on Clark Island in Batavia.

“We’re excited about it,” Sullivan said. “It’s sort of elevating what we’re doing. Our set is absolutely gorgeous.

In the past, we’ve never had to build a set. We just used a pavilion and some chairs. We look forward to seeing how it all works out.”

This year’s production, “Much Ado About Nothing,” will be presented at 7 p.m.

Salmonella concerns have prompted Aspen Foods, a division of Koch Poultry Co., to recall nearly two million pounds of frozen, raw, stuffed and breaded chicken product, according to a release from the Kane County Health Department.

The affected product was produced between April 15 and July 10 and has “best if used by” dates between July 14, 2016, and Oct. 10, 2016.

The product bears the establishment number “P1358” inside the USDA mark of inspection and was shipped to retail stores and food service locations nationwide.

Barber Foods to recall chicken products

The Kane County Health Department is advising residents that Barber Foods, a Portland, Maine, establishment, is recalling about 1.7 million pounds of frozen, raw, stuffed chicken products that might be contaminated with salmonella enteritidis.

Since the original recall July 2, a total of six illnesses in Minnesota and Wisconsin have been reported related to the product, although there have not immediately been any reported in

Illinois, a news release from the health department stated.

The following products are subject to recall: 2-pound, 4-ounce, cardboard boxes containing six individually-pouched pieces of “Barber Foods Premium Entrees Breaded-Boneless Raw Stuffed Chicken Breasts With Rib Meat Kiev,” with the use by/sell by dates of April 28, 2016, May 20, 2016 and July 21, 2016, and lot code numbers 0950292102, 0950512101 or 0951132202.

The products subject to recall bear the establishment number “P-276” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

These products were shipped to retail locations nationwide and Canada, the release stated.

REST at ease, caregivers Consider the following sentence, which ran in a Kane County Chronicle story earlier this week: “According to the Caregiver Action Network, more than 67 million people in the United States are currently providing care for a disabled parent, spouse or child at a minimum 20 hours a week, and – in most cases – without support.”

Maybe you are that person, the one who – on top of working full time or tackling other day-to-day tasks – spends hour upon hour caring for an elderly parent, spouse or special needs child.

If you are that person, you probably feel like you could use a break.

One organization looking to help provide that break is Marklund, a nonprofit group that serves people of all ages with developmental disabilities and special health care needs.

We commend Marklund for the work it is doing regarding respite care, in particular its taking the lead to develop the REST – Respite Education and Support Tools – training program, which provides a structured “Trainthe-Trainer” course for individuals wishing to train volunteer respite workers within their own respective organization or network.

Respite care allows caregivers to take a break from caregiving. And the more people who are able to provide respite services, the better, especially considering the fact that, according to www.census.gov, the entire baby boomer population will be 65 years and older by 2029, accounting for more than 20 percent of the total U.S. population.

In Illinois, a program such as REST can be viewed as distinctly vital, as it helps provide a solution for respite-care demand in a state that is currently dealing with budget issues.

REST has grown to 139 REST trainers and 1,129 respite volunteers nationwide since its launch in 2013, and the REST team is setting goals to expand its presence for the next three years.

We applaud the group for the work it is doing and wish it success moving forward.

Reporters’ ‘gotcha’ questions rarely pay off

By JONATHAN BERNSTEIN Bloomberg News For a professional politician, there’s nothing easier than turning the tables on a journalist’s “tough” question.

The latest example was at the president’s press conference Wednesday when Major Garrett of CBS News asked Barack Obama about four Americans held in Iran on “trumped-up charges.”

Garrett posed his question this way: “Can you tell the country, sir, why you are content, with all the fanfare around this deal, to leave the conscience of this nation, the strength of this nation, unaccounted for in relation to these four Americans?”

Well, that was easy, wasn’t it? The president’s response: “I’ve got to give you credit, Major, for how you craft those questions.

“The notion that I am con-

tent as I celebrate with American citizens languishing in Iranian jails, Major, that’s nonsense, and you should know better. I’ve met with the families of some of those folks.

Nobody’s content. And our diplomats and our teams are working diligently to try to get them out.”

As The Washington Post’s James Downie tweeted: Garrett “has every right to ask about the hostages.

Obama has every right to be angry at the accusation he’s ‘content.’ End of.”

Yup. But what did the exchange demonstrate, beyond one reporter’s unfortunate choice of words? Simply this: Reporters and debate moderators can’t “force” politicians to address an issue. Newt Gingrich practically ran his 2012 campaign around waiting for debate moderators to overstep so he could punch back, to the delight of media-hating Republicans.

It’s worth stressing this lesson, especially with the 2016 presidential debates just around the corner.

What worked on “The West Wing” isn’t how real politics works. Press conferences and debates give politicians an opportunity to make promises and to explain themselves to their constituents – that is, they’re part of the process of representation. The format allows reporters to ask about anything, no matter how uncomfortable a topic might be for the president or candidate.

The value is when reporters raise tough topics, not when they try to make politicians look bad. Even when politicians trip themselves up, the gaffes rarely are as consequential as the promises and explanations they’ve given in their answers.

Take responsibility

Everybody wants everything, and they want somebody else to pay for it. We sent (Gov. Bruce) Rauner to Springfield for a reason. It’s time for people to step up and take responsibility for their financial situation.

The main beneficiaries

It has been reported that our governor [has made] approximately $53 million a year. Compared to a worker in Illinois who is being paid the minimum wage of $8.25 an hour working eight-hour days, 40 hours a week and 50 weeks a year, he or she would have to work over 3,200 years, that’s years, to match what the governor makes in just one year.

And he doesn’t have to report to work each day to earn it.

Why does the governor and his supporters and the legislature oppose raising the minimum wage a few dollars without attaching some nonwage stipulations to the issue? Studies by prominent economists have shown that the effects of prices to consumers would be negligible. In fact, raising the minimum wage would bolster the economy because these low wage earners would have more money to spend. Who, then, are the main beneficiaries keeping wages and benefits low and the minimum wage where it is?

Jack Axe redux and a land Sharkey Eric Klein axed me a question Wednesday afternoon at the Kane County Fairgrounds, and the knee-jerk response ultimately meant trading my writing tool for a cutting one.

Turns out this city boy isn’t a lumberjack at heart, but man, is throwing an ax empowering.

Batavia-based Jack Axe, Inc. bills itself as a place “Where Iron Sharpens Iron.”

For those who even got a taste of the organization’s modified fair demo course – word to the wise, polos and khakis are inhibiting – the experience fulfilled the objective of co-founders Klein and Eric Winkler.

“Everybody likes watching the lumberjack competition and throwing axes and using bucksaws and things like that,” Winkler said. “But the reality is that nobody thinks, ‘Oh, I’m ever going to get to do that.’ Well, you can come to Jack Axe and we’ll show you how to do it and actually compete in it.”

Jack Axe plans its first games and festival Aug. 29 and 30, returning to the fairgrounds and its adjacent property to unfurl a 1½-mile obstacle course featuring 17 challenges.

Hirsch, whose scheduled home start Thursday was rained out, was 2-4 with a 3.28 ERA in 12 appearances over 68⅔ innings, including 11 starts. He struck out 48 and walked nine.

Hirsch’s promotion continues a recent string of novel team nicknames. He has gone from St. Charles North North Star to Nebraska Cornhusker to Helena Brewer to Wisconsin Timber Rattler to Brevard County Manatee.

cern of ours and something that we talked about. Even the home plate umpire, who was the same as yesterday, said his curveball was just as good.

So we were happy to see him pitch well and we played some good defense behind him to pick up the shutout.

“The bats also came alive to give us a bit of a cushion, so overall it was a really nice game because we got to see all areas of the game play a part.”

As Asquini expressed it as a major concern, Podany said he iced and ran some Thursday night to make sure he wasn’t sore coming into Friday, saying he felt great throwing his first pitch.

Podany started the game Thursday, but also closed Wednesday’s win against St. Charles North. As Asquini looked at the elite eight brackets, he told his team something that might resonate for quite a while.

Passing out the brackets, Asquini yelled out to his bunch, “There are two Upstate Eight (Conference) teams left. South Elgin and St. Charles East ... the best team in St. Charles.”

The Saints will have their chance to prove that next spring, but as far as the rest of the summer goes, the Saints will have a minimum of two more games. A loss Monday would mean another game that night, but a win would give East a rest, with the next game coming Tuesday morning.

“I thought the guys’ approaches over the last couple of weeks have been real focused,” Asquini said. “I feel like they almost felt like the baseball season was coming to an end and they didn’t want that to happen. I like the way we’re playing and what we are doing, so I’m excited for this group to play a few more games together this summer.”

GENEVA – Staring at Geneva goalkeeper Duncan Turnbull’s frame often can be intimidating.

If his 6-foot-7 frame wasn’t enough, Turnbull now can relax and focus on his play after committing to the University of Notre Dame on Thursday.

After watching him play at Nationals last week, in Indianapolis, with his Schaumburg-based club team, Sockers FC, Notre Dame coach Bobby Clark asked Turnbull to come for a visit to South Bend, Indiana.

After touring the campus Thursday, Clark told Turnbull he wanted him as a part of the Fighting Irish program, to which he gladly accepted.

“The entire staff, especially coach Clark, is really supportive of the players,” Turnbull said.

“It’s obviously a tremendous school, but the program has been successful over the last few years, so I’m hoping to go there and be a part of more success.”

The Notre Dame men’s soccer program won a national championship in 2013, and won the Atlantic Coast Conference this past season.

Turnbull said he had been in contact with a few other schools and had received scholarship offers from both Loyola University, in Chicago, and Yale University.

“I felt that, after a long recruiting process, Notre Dame was the best fit for me to continue my soccer career and develop to a better soccer player,” Turnbull said.

Of everything that committing to Notre Dame gives him, Turnbull said one big thing is it allows him to get the weight off of his shoulders and focus on having a great senior season at Geneva.

Ryan Estabrook said he has coached a number of players who have gone on to play Division-I soccer, but not too many he can think of committed before his senior high school season.

“It’s definitely a positive thing to have him make this decision before the season,” Estabrook said. “It allows him to relax and have a good season, because there isn’t that uncertainty of what he’s going to do after high school is over.”

But the big advantage Turnbull has over many Amanda Lulek goalkeepers is his aforementioned stature.

Standing 6-7 isn’t common in soccer, especially for a position that requires you to be athletic and quick on your feet.

“I think he’s finally starting to catch up with his body,” Estabrook said. “Duncan is also a kid that just has a tremendous desire to improve, but he’s also such a smart kid, so he’s really any college program’s dream at that position.”

Playing time always can be a factor in considering schools when playing a sport at the collegiate level, but this wasn’t a concern for Turnbull.

This might have been one of the main things that drew him to South Bend, aside from the prestigious nature associated with the school.

The bottom line for Turnbull once he arrives at Notre Dame in a year’s time is that if he plays well, he gives himself an opportunity to be the No. 1 goalkeeper.

“They said whoever the best goalkeeper is will play,” Turnbull said. “They made it very clear that whoever they think is playing the best will get the nod. So I’ll be ready to go work hard and earn my

place on the team.”

From burnout to bluegrass I think I’m on the road to burnout, but fortunately think the road will end before I can get there.

This week brought the 30th consecutive day I’ve umpired at least one game, and I’ve worked 101 games during that timeframe. If this were April or May, I’d have to schedule a couple off days for my sanity, but because we’re midway through July, I have to put my sanity on the backburner. I know the end of the summer season is near and I’m going to try to suck it up and fight through until the end. Lord, double play me strength.

I was curious if I really was starting to burn out, so I sought out an expert and contacted Dr. Pete Temple, founder of Mind’s Eye Sports Performance in Geneva. I knew athletes could get burned out, but what about umpires? So, I asked him and he provided some great insight.

“Burnout is not limited to just athletes, it can be Wall Street investors, accountants.

“The key to not getting burned out is prevention, and it’s something that’s significant for all my athletes. You don’t want to get to that point when something they love suddenly becomes something they almost hate and don’t want to do anymore.”

Temple said often times an athlete will take a break from a sport or working out and then come back re-energized.

I really can’t do that right now because of my busy schedule.

I told him I don’t really feel burned out when I’m actually umpiring, but find myself sometimes waking up loathing the games ahead later in the day.

“It sounds like you have a strong sense of commitment and aren’t just going through

the motions,” he said. “It does sound like you’re in the early stages of burnout, but you’re pushing through it because you can see a specific light at the end of the tunnel and can dig deep.

“It sounds to me like baseball teams are still getting your best effort. You might not be thrilled you have another game to do, but when you get to the game, your juices get flowing and as a professional, you’re doing fine.”

So, it appears as if I’m in the early stages of burnout. That’s OK, though. Now that I know it, I’m going to make sure I utilize my modest free time better.

A little more time relaxing in front of the TV, perhaps some pregame swimming and maybe giving the yardwork a break.

Something that is showing no sign of burnout is the lush, dark green grass of seemingly every baseball field I’ve visited this year. I can’t recall seeing grass this thick and green, especially in July when it usually

resembles the yellowish-brown that most Californians call a lawn.

I was at Waubonsee Community College for a tournament last week and the infielders looked as if they were always playing in for a play at the plate because the grass was so thick and high. Then again, I recently was at Metea Valley and the infield was freshly cut and short. I hadn’t seen an infield that short since last season. I complimented Mustangs coach Craig Tomczak about it and he told me how it’s a type of Kentucky Bluegrass, but he didn’t go full-on Carl Spackler.

I asked Ken Kerfoot, foreman of parks for the Geneva Park District, if this season has been extra difficult in maintaining fields.

“We’re usually mowing once or twice a week at most, unless there’s been a special request,” Kerfoot said. “The infield preps (all dirt) when we had all the rain were the biggest challenge. With cutting

grass, I would say it’s been marginally more difficult this year. It’s just unusual to have the grass still growing like this in July.”

Sugar Grove Park District Superintendent John Clayton said he hasn’t seen a spring and summer like this one in his 20 years on the job.

“Mother Nature dictates when he have to cut and we’ve had to cut more,” Clayton said.

“But the biggest problem for us has been the local flooding and the areas with standing water.

That’s been a big challenge for us. But every year is a challenge. If it’s not rainy, it’s the opposite and a drought.”

So now I’ve learned that the grass is greener, both on the fields and when my summer season ends.

Well, it definitely put the pressure on a little bit, but I had a good line, I was confident with it, so I just tried to put it in the cup.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North is set to host a four-team, round robin boys water polo tournament beginning today, culminating a summer session that included a six-week, 20team league that held matches at varying sites.

St. Charles East and conglomerate teams from Naperville and District 214 will join the North Stars.

On Sunday, the East and North girls will be part of a similar tournament at Conant.

“Its great to see the growth with North and East being involved,” Cloy said. “It just speaks to the efforts and investment of the kids and coaches and making sure there are opportunities to play water polo all year-round.”

Summer teams mix varsity returners with junior varsity players.

“The biggest thing about the summer is the great opportunity for our kids to play against all different kids throughout the area, and it really gives us the opportunity to see the growth and development with the kids,” Cloy said.

Swanson, D’backs agree to terms

PHOENIX – The Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to terms with No. 1 overall draft pick Dansby Swanson shortly before

Friday’s 4 p.m. deadline, setting in motion a professional career that could include a stint with the Class-A Cougars.

Swanson, 21, who starred at Vanderbilt and was selected during his junior season, earned a $6.5 million signing bonus.

Swanson batted .335 with 15 home runs in 71 games for the Commodores in 2015, helping the defending NCAA College World Series champions finish as national runner-up to Virginia.

In June, D’backs scouting director Deric Ladnier said via conference call that Swanson was “an advanced college player” and club officials would “internally talk” about assigning him to Class-A after he signed.

RHF seeks volunteers for August event

Will you be trying out for the varsity?

I started golfing probably when I was about 7 or 8, but I really didn’t get super serious about it until about a year ago. ... I was playing soccer also, but I wasn’t really super happy with it, I had an injury or two, and I just figured this would be the safer route and had more potential in golf.

What do you guys nickname this course? Anything?

Yeah. Yeah, most of the time I’m pretty easygoing.

Sometimes, I get a little frustrated, but most of the time, it’s fine.

I don’t know yet. Coach is going to maybe call me, maybe not. It depends. ... I would love to try out for varsity, but it may or may not happen.

ST. CHARLES – The four-day, two-weekend St. Charles Men’s Tournament is set to tee off today at Pottawatomie Golf Course, with the championship flight field including top-seeded Alex Hansberger and past champions Brian Charles, Tim May and Randy Spring.

Several recent high school graduates also highlight the field. One intriguing firstround match features 2014 St. Charles East product Ronnie Griggs against May, the tournament winner in 1994, 1997 and 2002.

In all, 42 golfers across four flights are set to tee off this weekend. Each of the eight, first-round championship flight matches will be contested today, as well as two C-flight matches. On Sunday, the championship flight will hold second round matches, while A-flight, B-flight and the rest of the C-flight play.

Tee times begin at 7 a.m. on both days, with play concluding on July 24 and 25.

The tournament continues a busy stretch at Pottawatomie, which this week hosted its annual Little Guys & Gals and Junior tournaments. The Little Guys & Gals field included 18 participants playing nine holes; 11-year-old Jackson Hulsey shot 39 from the yellow tees.

Faeries festival set for August

SOUTH ELGIN – The World of Faeries Festival will take place Saturday, Aug. 1, and Sunday, Aug. 2, at Vasa Park, 35W217 Route 31, South Elgin.

Uncommon nepetas for your garden Nepetas are mainstays of many Kane County gardens.

The reasons are clear: A long blooming season, starting in late spring and continuing well into late summer, even fall.

They are rabbit and deer resistant and can withstand intense sun and drought. “Joanna Reed” and “Six Hills Giant,” both lavender-blue, have been featured by Chicago Botanic Garden. These blue/purple cultivars are beautiful, but they represent only a small fraction of nepetas in commerce.

Nepeta x faassenii or “Snowflake” is one of the most versatile. It can be used as a pretty specimen, in a grouping, and as an edging plant. Only 14 inches high and about 12 inches across, with snowy white flowers, it is

beautiful enough to serve as a specimen, a plant for the middle of the border and is a superb accompaniment to other shrubs, replacing geraniums. It has sturdy stems, soft pink flowers, and an upright habit. About refreshing. Prevent Lyme disease by avoiding tick environments Dear Doctor K: Last week my 14-year-old daughter fell while skateboarding. She hit the back of her head and was dazed and had blurry vision for a few seconds. But she felt fine once she sat down and rested a bit. Now the left side of her head hurts, but otherwise she feels normal.

Should she see a doctor?

Dear Reader: Yes, she should.

In a child, particularly, it is often hard to know when trauma to the head may have caused a brain injury. That’s why you should never ignore a head injury, no matter how small it seems.

It may sound like I’m overreacting. After all, children bump their heads all the time. And in most cases, this results in nothing more than minor bumps, bruises or cuts in the scalp.

But sometimes head trauma can cause more serious injuries, like a concussion. The skull – the bony globe that surrounds and protects the brain – is hard.

But the brain is as soft as Jell-O. A head injury can cause the soft brain to forcefully bang against the hard skull. When that happens, the hard bony shell that was built to protect the brain

Concussions in children are serious. A concussion can cause: • Headache • Neck pain • Nausea or vomiting • Dizziness or vertigo • Hearing loss • Blurred or double vision • Fatigue • Irritability, anxiety or change in personality • Loss of memory • Confusion • Difficulty concentrating or slowing of reaction time • Brief loss of consciousness Symptoms often happen right away, and go away within minutes to hours. But sometimes children have symptoms that last for several days, weeks or even months.

The most important thing to do after suffering a concussion is to avoid situations that could cause another head injury.

That’s why it’s important to take a break from physical and

even mental activity. If your daughter has a concussion, her doctor might recommend that you: • Adjust your child’s schedule and schoolwork.

• Excuse your child from gym class, recess and sports.

The pediatrician will let you know when it’s OK for her to return to normal activities.

In addition, watch your child closely. Sometimes the injury that caused a concussion can cause bleeding into the brain.

Tell the pediatrician if symptoms get worse, come back, last too long, or if your child’s behavior changes. These are clues that something is not right.

Finally, in the future, insist that your daughter wear a helmet for skateboarding, biking or any other riding activity.

Nothing is more important in protecting her from a brain injury. Some brain injuries last a lifetime. Some, even, are fatal.

Students should focus on school, not just sports Dr. Wallace: I’m a 19-year-old young woman and I’ve graduated from high school. At work, I met a real nice guy and we have been dating for the past two months. He is 22 and a college graduate. My parents have met him and think that he is a nice young man.

When I was in high school, I had an 11:30 p.m. curfew. Now that I’ve graduated, my parents still demand that I be inside the house at 11:30 p.m. That means that when we go to a movie on Saturday night at 9 p.m., we sometimes have to leave before the film ends just to get me home on time.

I know you can’t change my parents’ minds, but I know they will take your views into consideration. Do you think that I should have an extended weekend curfew now that I’ve graduated and have a job? – Unhappy, Peoria Dear Unhappy: With age and maturity comes privilege. A 12:30 a.m. curfew when on a date would be reasonable for you.

South’s two-no-trump rebid shows a balanced hand with 12-14 points. (However, if you use two-over-one game-forcing, you may also make this rebid with 18-19 points because it is forcing. If partner raises to three no-trump, you invite a slam by bidding four no-trump.)

Declarer starts with five top tricks: one heart (from trick one), three diamonds and one club. He will hope that the club finesse is working.

First, let’s assume South finesses his heart jack at trick two. West wins with his queen and must return the heart nine – his highest-remaining – as a suit-preference signal, showing that his entry lies in spades, not diamonds. Then, after declarer takes the losing club finesse, East will know which suit to return. (Note that if East shifts to diamonds, the contract makes.

And unaided, he is likely to do that because South bid spades in the auction.)

Secondly, if South wins trick two with his heart king, West must again signal with the nine.
