I

’ve had the luck of photographing a lot of golf lately in the most beautiful weather.

Each day on the course, it’s been breezy and sunny with lots of puffy, white clouds in the sky. So riding around for a couple of hours on a golf cart has led to nice “days at the office” for me lately.

Most of the difficulty in photographing golf, though, is identifying the players. Unlike soccer, basketball or football, the golfers don’t wear numbers on their shirts, and the coaches don’t hand out corresponding rosters.

I can usually find the golfers I need by figuring out what their

tee time was and then working my way through the course while driving the aforementioned golf cart and counting groups according to tee times.

Once I find the right tee time, though, I have to figure out who is in the group.

It was pretty easy this week when I asked Colin Johnson

during the St. Charles Junior Golf Tournament at Pottawatomie Golf Course. He said, “I’m the one in the sick pants,” as he stood there in his very colorful orange, black and white argyle pants.

Judge allows phone records in Geneva murder case

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A judge on Thursday granted the Kane County State’s Attorney’s motion for cellphone tower registration records in a murder case involving a Geneva man.

The State’s Attorney’s Office will be allowed to obtain cell tower registration records for the cellphones of Shadwick R. King and his Shadwick w i f e , K a t h - R. King leen M. King.

Shadwick King 47, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in his wife’s July 6 death. He re-

mained in the Kane County Jail on a $1.5 million bond as of Thursday afternoon, according to online records.

The State’s Attorney’s Office requested cell tower registration records from 10:30 p.m. July 5 to 11:30 a.m. July 6 for the two cellphone numbers to better determine the cellphones’ locations throughout that time period, according to the motion.

“We need historical cell site information to be able to track whereabouts,” said Greg Sams, a Kane County assistant state’s attorney, during the Thursday hearing on the motion.

Shadwick King told police that he took his wife’s cellphone from her after they had an argument about 4 a.m. July 6, according to court records.

Esping Park, 227 Briar Lane, in Geneva at 6:37 a.m. July 6 by a train operator on another track. Kathleen King’s cellphone was found next to her body, Sams said.

The court finds that there is no expectation of privacy in phone records with regards to determining location, Judge James Hallock said during a Thursday hearing, where King also was present in an orange jail uniform. Hallock said that the phone records are relevant material to the ongoing investigation.

King’s attorney, Assistant Public Defender Brenda Willett, made a motion to find that the federal statute that the State’s Attorney’s motion was pursuant to is unconstitutional.

“To give my client’s records is an intrusion; it is something

that is a privacy issue ... that falls under the Fourth Amendment,” Willett said in court.

Willett said the law does permit the state to obtain a warrant for records, but prosecutors did not choose that route. Sams referenced a 2013 case that included research on how cell site data actually is a business record.

“This is a business entity that collects routine information on a daily basis,” Sams said.

After Sams and Willett concluded their arguments, Hallock’s finding was that the federal statute is indeed constitutional. Hallock noted that the state’s motion was for historical cellphone tower data, not the actual contents of the conversations themselves.

King’s next court date is Aug. 22.

GAS PRICES ON THE DECLINE Area drivers seeing less pain at the pump

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Batavia resident Chris Winkle is thankful that gas prices are dropping these days as she gassed up at the Batavia Avenue Mobil station Thursday morning.

“Between filling my tank and filling my teenager’s tank, it has made life easier,” Winkle said.

And prices continue to drop. After Winkle drove off, an employee at the station changed the price for a gallon of regular gasoline from $3.59 to $3.55 Average retail gas prices in Illinois have fallen about 7 cents a gallon in the past week, according to Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for the gasoline price website GasBuddy.com, And prices are likely to continue to drop, he said.

“We’ve seen over 30 straight days now of prices dropping across the state,” DeHaan said.

“This decrease started June 15.”

According to GasBuddy. com, the average price for a regular gallon of gas in Illinois on Thursday was $3.67, higher than the national average of $3.58 a gallon. A week ago, the average price of gas in Illinois was $3.75 for a regular gallon of gas. Before the decrease, DeHaan noted that gas prices in Illinois had jumped because of the tense situation in Iraq, a leading oil producing country.

But the market isn’t as jittery these days about that situation, he said.

“Now, the market has cooled off,” he said. “Refineries have increased production of gasoline, especially in the Great Lakes region, which is one of the areas that was hardest hit. The situation in Iraq was happening right around

GasBuddy.com. the same time some refinery issues had developed. Now those issues have been resolved.”

An increase in domestic oil production also is driving gas prices downward, DeHaan said.

“Oil production here in the United States is booming,” he said. “There are areas of North Dakota that have gone from three million barrels a month in 2005 in oil production to over 30 million barrels a month today. We’re talking about a tenfold increase over the last 10 or so years in areas of North Dakota.”

Gas prices in the Tri-Cities area vary widely. For example, gas was selling Thursday for $3.46 a gallon at a BP gas station in St. Charles, according to GasBuddy.com, but at a Marathon station in Geneva, it was selling for $3.63 a gallon.

DeHaan attributed the price gap to wholesale gas prices continuing to drop.

“If gas stations are replenishing every three to five days, boom, all of a sudden you’re replenishing for 15 cents a gallon cheaper than the guy who bought five days ago,” DeHaan said. “That’s obviously going

to be reflected in your price.”

Mark Novack, a manager at the Batavia Avenue Mobil, said he is glad to see gas prices go down, although he hasn’t seen an increase in business.

“It doesn’t seem like it has changed driving habits,” Novack said. “I think people notice more when prices go up

than when they go down.”

Drivers in Illinois are paying less for gas these days than they were a year ago, when the average price for a regular gallon of gas was at $3.98, DeHaan said.

“Last year, prices bottomed out for the summer on July 7, and they really started to shoot up,” he said.

And DeHaan warned motorists not to get used to declining gas prices, especially if the situation gets worse in Iraq or if a major hurricane strikes the United States.

“If you had a category five hurricane churning out in the Gulf of Mexico today, we wouldn’t be talking about prices going down; we’d be talking about them spiking,” DeHaan said. “That remains a potential threat, absolutely.”

Barring that, he said average gas prices should continue to decrease in the coming weeks.

“We could get down to $3.55 or $3.60 a gallon if there is no hurricane threat or new geopolitical tension to worry about,” DeHaan said.

Mike Lee, president and CEO of KCT Credit Union, told a County Board committee on Thursday that his organization is interested in placing an ATM in Building A of the government center campus at 719 Batavia Ave. in Geneva.

Such a relationship wouldn’t be entirely new.

Kane County became a credit union partner in 1991, and the banking facility had a branch in Building A until it relocated to downtown Geneva in 2007.

Installing an ATM at the government center would provide county employees and community members convenient access to an ATM, Lee said.

KCT would pay for all costs

associated with the ATM in its first year, Lee said, and a cost/ usage study would be conducted for subsequent years.

Board member Doug Scheflow, R-Elgin, asked if rental fees could be a possibility.

“Real estate has a cost associated with it,” he said.

In another discussion Thursday, Scheflow also suggested charging organizations fees for using county property, such as the Kane County Courthouse in Geneva, for

events.

The county receives a “steady stream” of applications for special events, he said, noting his surprise that the county doesn’t charge a rental fee.

He is filling a vacancy created when another employee left for a full-time position, the circuit clerk said.

Because of the “time sensitive” nature of the position, which also required employees to pass a background check, Hartwell said filling

the position was difficult.

His son is being paid $9 an hour for his seven weeks’ worth of work, Hartwell said.

“He’s got tremendous qualifications,” said Hartwell, who also serves as chairman of the Kane County Republicans.

Another Kane County office also is working to digitize its files this summer. The Kane County Public Defender’s Office, however, is using first-year Northern Illinois University law students to help sort its files.

ELGIN – Negotiating teams for the Support Staff of Elgin Community College Association – or SSECCA – and the Elgin Community College Board of Trustees have reached a tentative agreement on a new three-year contract, states a news release from ECC. The two parties agreed to the tentative contract Wednesday.

Negotiations began in April, and the SSECCA contract expired June 30, states the release.

“SSECCA’s negotiating team

believes we have reached a tentative agreement that all members will recognize benefits,” said Robert Treadwell, SSECCA union president, in the release.

SSECCA membership will schedule a meeting to ratify the agreement, which will be followed by final approval by the ECC Board of Trustees.

Both teams have agreed not to release contract details until the tentative agreement is ratified by both parties, the release states.

He was born Nov. 13, 1946, in Troy, New York, the son of William Donlin and Martha (Miller) Grady Sr. He graduated from Catholic Central High School, Class of 1964.

He attended Siena College in Loudonville, New York, and in 1968 received a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He served as an officer in the United States Army from 1968 to 1972, including a tour of duty in Vietnam during 1971 and 1972. Don was united in marriage to Suzanne K. Genski on April 11, 1970, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Troy, New York. He was employed with Arthur Andersen for 23 years until 1992, later Waste Management in Oak Brook until 1997 and then Sears Corporation in Hoffman Estates until 2000. Don received a master’s degree from Benedictine University in 1993. In 2000, he founded People Centrics and ran the company at the time of his death.

He had been a frequent lecturer/ professor at National Louis University from 2007 until the present, and has also served as its associate dean of the College of Business and later director of its online learning program. Don loved computers, online learning and technology. He was very involved in his parishes all his life, leading retreats, serving as a lector at Mass, working on various councils and committees, teaching religious education and serving in

the Knights of Columbus. He also enjoyed writing a regular column for the “Sun Day Paper” in Sun City, Huntley.

He is survived by his wife, Sue, of Huntley; his son, Fr. Brian Grady of Crystal Lake; his daughter, Jennifer (Matt) Frankowski of Valparaiso, Indiana; his sisters, Mary Lou Riegert and Martha (Ed) Manny, both of Troy, New York; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The former Mary Elizabeth Osborne was born on Dec. 2, 1926, in Halifax, Virginia, the daughter of the late Samuel S. and Dorothy Soloman Osborne. On Dec. 24, 1954, in Halifax, Virginia, Elizabeth was united in marriage to Richard Martin Walston. He preceded her in death on July 7, 2012.

Elizabeth graduated from Columbia International University in Columbia, South Carolina. Elizabeth and Richard lived in St. Charles, where they were active in New Covenant Bible Church until moving to Twin Lakes in 2005.

They were members of New Life Bible Church in Twin Lakes. They were missionaries in Japan from 1960 to 1963. She formerly worked as an administrative assistant for the Kane County Recorder’s Office.

Elizabeth is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Metcalf of Lanark, Illinois, and Darlene (Chuck) Boyd of Twin Lakes, Wisconsin; seven grandchildren, Brittany (Casey) Golema, Nathan (Sarah) Metcalf, Jessica (Andrew) Schmidt, Tyler (Ashley) Boyd, Jacob Boyd, Grant Boyd and Faith Boyd; five great-grandchildren, Caleb Golema, Isaac Golema, Derek Metcalf, Owen Metcalf and Abby Schmidt; and one sister, Dorothy Osborne of Richmond, Virginia.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by one grandson, David Michael Boyd; three sisters, Myrtle Casssada, Nellie Murphy and Elsie Sheperd; three brothers, Ralph, Clarence and Samuel Osborne; and one son-inlaw, Mike Metcalf.

And while the restaurant’s slogan is “Scoopin’ Fun Since 1901,” ice cream creations have not been the only thing the Anderson family has been involved with.

The building complex located at 333 N. Randall Road in St. Charles is home to three separate Anderson family businesses: the Colonial Cafe headquarters, CrossFit 333 and Prestige Imports.

Former Colonial Cafe President Tom Anderson and his wife, Cris, raised three children: Suzana, Clinton and Sonia. All three children grew up in St. Charles and attended Utah State University.

While each had separate plans and ambitions, the siblings have since moved back to the Fox Valley to grow their businesses.

Tom Anderson said while it was not easy to hand over control to his son, he was ultimately proud that Clinton Anderson, the current president of Colonial Cafe, had both the ambition and aptitude.

Tom Anderson reminisced about his son starting his Colonial career and said Clinton Anderson started out by emptying waste baskets around the office when he was younger.

The third generation former president is now the director of “Scoopin’ Fun” and is responsible for the ice cream menu and creating new items, according to Clinton Anderson.

Clinton Anderson said he always planned to return to Colonial Cafe after working in the food industry. “ ‘What would I do if I wasn’t at Colonial Cafe?’...

I’m not sure,” Clinton Anderson said. “I’m a lifer.”

He named his positive father-son and business relationship with his dad as the most rewarding part about working at Colonial Cafe.

Clinton Anderson and his wife, Kimmie, married less than a year ago, and he said he looks forward to building experiences with the next generation of Andersons at Colonial Cafe.

Sonia Murray, co-owner of CrossFit 333, with her husband, Blake, said she worked for Colonial Cafe as a server

in high school, but said she is better suited to be a gym owner.

CrossFit is a group fitness strength and conditioning program, said Murray. She said their one-hour classes generally have a diverse range of ages and have coaches present to ensure participants use correct form to execute each exercise.

Murray said CrossFit focuses on improving quality of life no matter how fit or old members are. She said she loves seeing people’s attitudes change after working out.

“People come in and they have this face on from the world ... and they leave happy,” Murray said.

Murray said she has high hopes for the gym and hopes to expand into unused areas of the building in St. Charles.

One member in Sonia and Blake Murray’s class is Suzana Chock, daughter of Tom Anderson.

Chock and her husband, Eric, jointly own Prestige Imports.

Prestige Imports differentiates itself from other used cars dealers because of its laid back approach to sell-

ing cars, Eric Chock said. He said he does not have a car sale background and that his shop has a low-pressure atmosphere for customers.

Eric Chock said he always prided himself on getting good deals when he was a kid, particularly on basketball shoes.

He bought a used Porsche 14 years ago and befriended the car dealer and began to learn the business.

The Batavia native said he was blessed to be part of the Anderson family and said Tom Anderson was a great mentor to him when he first opened Prestige Imports in 2005. The Andersons are always bouncing ideas off each other and helping each other’s businesses, Eric Chock said.

Eric Chock glanced quickly at his computer on July 15, checking the security cameras and pointing out a balcony in his service garage, which connects Prestige Imports and the Colonial Cafe offices.

He noted that every once in a while somebody will take a peek at how his business is doing.

“Everybody is out to try and help each other in what they do,” Eric Chock said.

It is “very special to have everybody back in St. Charles,” Tom Anderson said.

GENEVA – Construction of a third set of railroad tracks on the Union Pacific line that runs through Geneva recently received $90 million in pledged support from the railroad and the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Union Pacific and IDOT will each invest $45 million for the improvement planned for the UP/Metra West line from River Forest to Melrose Park and from West Chicago to Geneva, according to a news release.

The state’s portion is part of Gov. Pat Quinn’s $31 billion Illinois Jobs Now! program.

“This final piece of the West line improvement pro-

gram will enhance commuter and freight travel on one of our state’s busiest rail lines,” Quinn said in a written statement.

“Building world-class infrastructure is vital to a healthy economy and today’s investment will help get us there.”

With the third track, the news release states, the 59 Metra trains and 70 freight trains that use the line daily will be able to operate at the same time, thus increasing reliability and efficiency.

BATAVIA – Visitors at the Batavia Depot Museum’s eighth annual Quilt and Textile Show will have an opportunity to view a traveling exhibit that features a depiction of the historical Route 66.

The exhibit is appropriately 66 feet long and features nearly 50 pieces spanning from California to Illinois.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Starting next month, the former Hubbard’s Ethan Allen Gallery on Batavia Avenue in downtown Batavia will receive a second life as a furniture store.

Acosta’s Consignment in St. Charles, which specializes in upscale, nearly new furniture and home accessories, will move its main store at 1920 W. Main St. in St. Charles to the former Hubbard’s building at 16 N. Batavia Ave. (Route 31).

“We’ve been looking for the last six months to find the right location that we wouldn’t outgrow,” said Christine Acosta, who owns Acosta’s Consignment with her husband. “It’s a very prominent building. Everyone in the area knows the building. It was a logical move for us to move into a furniture store.”

Hubbard’s Ethan Allen Gallery closed in 2011 after owner Bob Hubbard decided to retire.

The furniture store had been a fixture in the downtown since 1910, when his grandfather, G.E. Hubbard, bought an existing furniture business at 16 N. Batavia Ave. The store in 1969 decided to exclusively carry Ethan Allen furnishings. Acosta said the new building will provide the business with much needed

“The building is almost 14,000 square feet, which will make us the largest upscale furniture consignment store in Illinois as far as we can tell,” Acosta said.

Plans are for the new store to open Aug. 23. There also will be a grand opening that day, she said.

While Acosta’s Consignment will be moving its main store, Acosta’s second store at

116 E. Main St. in downtown St. Charles will remain open.

“We also live in St. Charles, and we would like to keep a presence in St. Charles, as well,” Acosta said.

Batavia Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Holly Deitchman said she thinks the building is the perfect location for Acosta’s Consignment and that the business will help boost that economic corridor.

“I think they will be very successful,” Deitchman said.

Joi Cuartero, executive director of Batavia MainStreet, noted that Acosta’s is just the latest retail business to be opening in downtown Batavia.

“Retail is starting to ramp up in Batavia,” she said. “It just shows more growth in our downtown.”

Painkiller for student debt would also cut default rates

BLOOMBERG NEWS The U.S. system of student loans is nobody’s idea of a successful program. Default rates are near a two-decade high, burdening borrowers, the government and the economy as a whole. Yet programs intended to help prevent these personal fiascos – by tying debtors’ payments to a portion of their income – don’t reach the people who need them most.

Legislation introduced Wednesday by Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and Democratic Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia would help to change that. The bill would expand the income-based repayment plans already available, by automatically enrolling each new borrower in such a program. Borrowers would pay 10 percent of their annual income toward their debts, with the option to pay faster.

Automatic enrollment corrects the perverse incentives of the current system, in which those with the highest debts – usually graduate students – have the greatest reason to enroll. And it means the program is no longer limited to those who know enough to take advantage of it.

The proposal includes a second important feature: automatically deducting payments from borrowers’ paychecks, unless they choose to opt out. That system, already in place in other countries, all but eliminates the risk of defaulting on loans. Borrowers would be paying a percentage of their income toward their debt, but when they are out of a job or earning less than $10,000 a year, their required payments would be zero.

Why won’t this just encourage people not to work and stick the taxpayer with the bill?

The legislation is designed not to impose enormous new costs by tightening the standards for loan forgiveness.

Under the current system, loans are forgiven after 20 years. The Rubio-Warner bill would retain that for students who borrow up to $57,500, but impose a longer forgiveness time – 30 years – for those who borrow more.

That reduces the cost to the government, while, one hopes, creating a disincentive for students for spending more than they need to.

These changes won’t fix what ails the financing of U.S. higher education. But they offer a sensible, practical and affordable way to clean up a mess this system created.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Living around here sure feels nice When the switch on my desk lamp died, I announced to my wife, Tia, “I need a new light. Home Goods?”

“Or Target or Meijer.”

Five minutes later I was scrutinizing Home Good’s lamps with the eye of an American Kennel Club judge. Fifteen minutes after that, I found next door at DSW some loafers, original price thrice reduced.

At times like these, or browsing Playaways in the St. Charles Public Library or fishing the Fox River, I’ll think, “Boy, sure is nice living around here.”

Author Kurt Vonnegut’s uncle used to tell him, “I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, ‘If this isn’t nice, I don’t know what is.’ ” OK, you’re thinking, “Hey, who are you, and what have you done with Rick?” Yes, I can be cynical, even bilious about Fox Valley life.

But, hey, I’m still here, and have been since 1979 because I wouldn’t – couldn’t – live anywhere else.

We have global restaurants: Gen Hoe (Chinese), the Gratto (Italian), Wok’n Fire (Japanese), El Taco Grande (Mexican), and Stockholm’s (Swedish and beyond). All with bilingual menus.

One evening we found two women sitting in soccer chairs at a table in the parking lot while sipping wine and chatting as the sun painted its western canvas.

My daughter, Molly, loves biking along the Fox River, and my son, Jay, runs circles around Delnor Hospital’s track and continues onto points west. Other favorites include Wheeler Park’s frolf, tennis and miniature golf.

But wait! There’s more! This weekend, I’ll try to catch Shakespeare on Island Park in Geneva.

Last week, Batavia’s Windmill City Festival offered a terrific country band (Jay tells me), and the Kane County Fair offers more bands than you can shake cotton candy at.

But life’s not all fun and music.

Recently, a friend, feeling chest pains, visited a St. Charles convenient care facility. Directed to the

ER at Delnor Hospital, in an hour he was having a stint put in. A couple days ago, he was running his band saw.

When our ancient Ford Taurus station wagon started groaning louder than usual, I called Duke and Lee’s service station. In a couple hours, they had her running quieter than a study hall on the eve of final exams.

As for traffic, compare driving a Tri-Cities’ block to Naperville. And if you think winter’s potholes are deep here, try navigating, as I did, Ann Arbor’s volcanic cavities.

The schools aren’t too shabby, either. Do your homework and discover why.

Gotta go. Egg Harbor for breakfast, then a farmers market, and maybe a flick at Randall 15 or Charlestowne 18.

Like everyone says: small town feel, big town conveniences. That is what I am talking a-BOUT!

Gift that keeps on giving Champs Johnson, Furrie earn trophies, 2015 season passes

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Pottawatomie Golf Course assistant pro Bill Ogiego downplayed the size and scope of the awards ceremonies that closed the St. Charles Junior Tournament on Thursday.

A few athletes gathered around the leaderboard and a card table of trophies. Nothing flashy, just the facts.

For St. Charles East senior Colin Johnson, the setup proved more than enough.

Winning the Boys 16 and 17 title with a two-day 71 – eight shots better than East junior Daniel Haugen – was a product of a newfound, quiet confidence.

“Last year, if I broke 40 here [in nine holes], I’d be really happy,” Johnson said.

“But this year, I would expect to shoot, like, 36 every time. So it’s helped. It’s gotten a lot better in the last year.”

The Day 1 leader of the 2013 tournament before finishing fifth, Johnson assured there would be no repeat behind a deft touch around the green.

He provided one such display – if not a harbinger for a first-place trophy – on the par 3 fourth hole. With his approach shot resting on the fringe, Johnson followed with a birdie putt that stayed true from the start.

“I played here a lot last year, so most of the putts, I knew how they’d break,” Johnson said. “It was good that I had that experience.”

There’s more on the way.

In a new tournament provision, the overall boys and girls low-scorers both received a free Pottawatomie season pass for the next year.

St. Charles North senior Gianna Furrie, the overall medalist in 2013, won the Girls 15 through 17 title with an 84, four shots clear of East sophomore Kacie Gaffney.

A familiar foe in junior events in the past several years, Gaffney erased a three-stroke deficit after just three holes. She and Furrie

“I’ve been really heady with my playing, and I was kind of like that yesterday, so today I was just trying to have fun with it.”

The tournament marked Furrie’s final competitive action until North tryouts next month, although she’s giddy about an upcoming vacation to California and Hawaii in which she’ll play a few iconic courses. Flanked by her dad, Shawn, and sister, Ariana – who plays at Wagner in Staten Island, New York – Furrie plans to play on Pebble Beach’s Spyglass Hill Course as well as Kapalua.

When she returns, she’s sure to find a friendly Gaffney in many of her groups in IHSA

“Whenever we play together, we usually get along,” Gaffney said. “We’ll talk about school and stuff and how the team’s going for both of us. So definitely, we have small talk.

It’s not like, ‘Oh, I don’t like you.’ Definitely, we get along.”

East freshman Connor King edged Charlie Downing by one stroke for the Boys 14 and 15 crown. King’s 85 featured a 7 on the closing, No. 9 hole after he hit his drive out of bounds to the right. As Downing parred, King recovered with an effective approach and short game.

“I was knocking them pretty close to the pin today.

I think that was good,” King said. “The drives, they weren’t as good as they were yesterday, but I was hitting them close.”

East freshman Grace Westerhoff, the only competitor in the Girls 12 through 14

division, earned a first-place trophy with a 127. She played in a foursome alongside Furrie, Gaffney and Marisa Kuchta (132).

Shortly after learning of Johnson’s season-pass prize, King wondered aloud whether his was coming. In a lighthearted exchange with Ogiego, he wondered why he didn’t receive anything for winning.

Ogiego was quick to remind him of the trophy he was carrying.

No matter the stroke deficits golfers faced, many felt comfortable no matter where they stood given a familiarity with Pottawatomie.

“Knowing the course, it’s just so helpful,” said North junior Hank Zimmer, third in Boys 16 and 17 play with an 82.

“You know where to put the ball, you know which holes are easiest, which holes you need to focus more on. It’s just very helpful.”

“There isn’t a lot of football in it, but it’s a lot of fun,” Wicinski said. “I think it’s more team-building than anything else and having fun. It gives the linemen a chance to be together.”

The silliest part of the day was the watermelon eating contest that pitted the linemen against a quarter of watermelon with one minute to consume as much as possible.

AURORA – Coaches say the seeds of success are planted in the offseason.

Who knew they were talking about watermelon seeds?

A watermelon eating competition was just one event for local linemen at the 16th annual “Battle of the Big Butts” Thursday at West Aurora. A linemen’s version of a 7-on-7, various events tested physical strength and endurance, such as bench press, truck tire flip relay and tug-of-war, while others like the 40-yard dash and agility course tested speed.

Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles East were all represented with respective teams of varsity and underclassmen linemen.

Batavia team No. 2, a squad consisting of the Bulldogs’ offensive linemen, finished third in the double elimina-

Jake Hlava had the best individual time in the agility course among all competitors.

West Aurora used Fully Automatic Timing to combine all of the runners’ times, although that usually adds about twotenths of a second to the time, according to several coaches.

Not to be outdone, Geneva’s No. 1 team won the tire flip relay with a time of 1:42, and tight end Jack McCloughan had the best individual time in the 40-yard dash at 5.1 seconds.

The rival schools had a little head-to-head competition as each No. 1 team faced off in the tug-of-war competition, with Geneva’s team of McCloughan, Matt Loberg, Ben Baker, Jonathan Boenzi and Stephen Kemp claiming victory.

Curve confounds Batavia in defeat

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Fastballs became an increasingly rare commodity for the Batavia baseball team’s offense Thursday, and it’s no coincidence the hits started drying up, too.

The Bulldogs fell one game short of reaching the summer Elite Eight, as they lost to Crystal Lake South, 4-0, in the championship game of the St. Charles East Regional.

After his team threatened in the first couple of innings against Gators left-hander Timmy Siesennop, Bulldogs coach Matt Holm could sense adjusting to Siesennop’s curveball could become problematic.

“I walked over and I said ‘If he throws one more fastball, they’re not very smart – you guys are going to have to prove that you can hit the curveball,’ ” Holm said. “And there were only a couple that we put in play hard. He did a real nice job.”

Batavia (18-7-1) was on the verge of taking a swift lead in the top of the first when leadoff man Jimmy Roach singled, was sacrificed to second base

by Sean Townsend and then tried to score on Nick Rogalski’s single up the middle.

But Gators center fielder Collin Chubb made an excellent throw home and catcher Nick Van Witzenburg applied the tag in plenty of time to keep Roach from scoring.

“I saw the outfield was really bouncy and I tried to get it on one hop,” said Chubb, who was hit by a pitch in each of his first two at-bats. “I saw [first baseman Derek Bulger] was out there for my cut, so I just tried to throw the ball right through him, and one-bounced it to home, and we got him.”

Siesennop allowed four of Batavia’s five hits in the first two innings and kept the Bulldogs hitless for the final 3⅓ innings of his complete game.

The curveball set the tone for Siesennop, who saw limited

varsity innings while mostly pitching for the Gators’ sophomore team during the spring.

Crystal Lake South had no big innings against Batavia right-hander Eric Huizinga but the Gators scratched single runs in the first, second, third and fifth innings to steadily pull away.

“We didn’t just get complacent and happy with the oneor two-run lead because earlier on this week, we played a 12-inning game after sitting on a 2-0 lead [against Oswego East], and that wasn’t a lot of fun staying up that late to play,” Gators coach Brian Bogda said.

The team’s third run came when Crystal Lake South took advantage of a concentration lapse by Batavia’s defense.

With runners on first and third and two outs, Crystal Lake South pinch-runner John Smerecky dashed home and scored after John Constantino intentionally extended a run-down long enough for Smerecky to cross home before being tagged out between first and second base.

“What’s embarrassing about that is that’s one of ours,” Holm said. “I mean, that’s what we do. And the funny thing is we work on it ourselves a lot, and we just fell asleep. I think it’s probably the only time certainly in the last two weeks where we’ve fallen asleep, and they took advantage of it.”

Batavia graduated most of its firepower from a powerhouse in the spring that won the Upstate Eight Conference River championship and earned a No. 1 sectional seed before falling to South Elgin in a sectional final.

Despite having many holes to plug, Holm said the team demonstrated this summer that there are plenty of newcomers ready to join returnees such as Evan Acosta, Kyle Niemiec and Rogalski to keep the program on a winning path.

“I feel like we’ve got quite a bit to reload with and feel good about,” Holm said.

Busy Biddle braces for Amateur Blake Biddle excelled on one golf course he had never seen before to advance to another with which he is unfamiliar.

“A lot of it’s just kind of plotting my way around the course and figuring out my best chance,” he said. “Golf’s a lot of trying to play the percentages.”

By scheduling a heavy itinerary for yet another summer, Biddle, a St. Charles resident and Wheaton Academy alumnus, aimed to increase his odds of advancing to the U.S. Amateur, a feat he accomplished last week.

On July 11, Biddle earned the third and final qualifying spot to the event with a 36-hole score of 139 at Channahon’s Heritage Bluffs Golf Club, six strokes behind the leader and one ahead of a potential four-way playoff.

He’s set to descend on the Aug. 11 to 17 Amateur at the Atlanta Athletic Club’s Highlands Course, his third Amateur in four years. Here’s a look at some other Biddle developments: From the Strip to Sooie: Biddle transferred from Nevada-Las Vegas to Arkansas after three seasons after the 2012-13 school year.

What happens in Vegas stays there, indeed.

The 2010-11 Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year, Biddle eventually grew weary of UNLV’s glitzy Strip surroundings, calling

“Unless you want to get in trouble,” he said, “and that wasn’t an option for me.”

He chose Arkansas in part for its ambiance, citing his love of college sports and the school’s participation in the storied Southeastern Conference. Limited by mononucleosis for much of his final season, Biddle averaged 77.9 in 15 rounds with the Razorbacks in 2013-14, with a low round of 69.

Biddle closed his collegiate career in May at the NCAA championships in Hutchinson, Kansas, helping the Razorbacks tie for 18th in the team race.

He’s set to rejoin the program as a graduate assistant next season while finishing his degree in agricultural economics.

Course of action: Biddle’s best U.S. Amateur effort remains his debut. In 2011, he placed second in the strokeplay portion of the event at Wisconsin’s Erin Hills before advancing to the third round of match play.

Erin Hills will host the U.S. Open in 2017, one of a handful of courses Biddle has played that have or will see big-ticket tournaments.

“That’s always fun,” Biddle said.

“You always love watching that when you’ve played there and they show a hole on TV and you can visualize it for yourself and you can, hopefully, remember the good shots you hit instead of the bad ones.”

Secret of the pros: While he is restraining himself from thinking too far ahead now, Biddle plans to explore possible avenues into turning pro as the school year progresses.

He got acclimated to some of those potential rigors by playing in several out-of-state tournaments in past summers. Biddle elected to stay close to Illinois and the Midwest in 2014.

“It’s not bad. The last couple summers have been way worse,” he said.

“Traveling all around, playing the top amateur stuff nationally was kind of a grind. This time I wanted to take a step back and be closer to home. ...

Especially because as I get ready for the next step of turning pro, I know I’m going to be traveling a lot.”

Robinson aces Tanna Farms Four Marmion alumni, 72 combined holes, one ace.

The foursome of Rob Robinson, Mike Alger, Ed Garrity and Dan Soliz still is beaming about Robinson’s hole-inone during a June 6 round at Geneva’s Tanna Farms Golf Club.

Using an 8-iron on the Par-3, 145yard No. 11 hole, Robinson, of Bristol, added to an already memorable round for the longtime friends with his feat.

“I’ve never been around anybody with a hole-in-one,” said Soliz, of Batavia, “and I’m getting older now, so when you see that ball go in, you go crazy.”

Another busy summer for St. Charles resident and Wheaton Academy product Blake Biddle includes a spot in next month’s U.S. Amateur in Atlanta.

A seven-member contingent from Rich Harvest Farms and Sugar Grove will attend next week’s inaugural LPGA International Crown match-play event at Caves Valley in Maryland for a preview of what’s coming to RHF in 2016.

From RHF: President Jerry Rich, general manager Keith Rich, communications manager Samantha Rubin and sales member Alex Kline-Weeden will attend.

Sugar Grove officials Sean Michels (mayor), Brent Eichelberger (village administrator) and Pat Rollins (police chief) are set to join them.

The Crown features teams from the United States, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Spain, Sweden, Chinese Taipei and Australia.

The event seeks to capture the worldly reach of women’s golf more efficiently than the complementary U.S.-versus-Europe Solheim Cup, which RHF hosted in 2009.

North grad Holm to make cameo in Kane County Jeff Holm embraces the “versatile” label the parent Detroit Tigers gave him after drafting the St. Charles North and Michigan State product in 2011.

He hopes it resonates somewhere other than the Class-A Midwest League and the Advanced-A Florida State League sometime soon.

Holm will bring his slash lines – left field, right field, first base, designated hitter – to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark next weekend when West Michigan visits the Class-A Cougars for three games. He did the same thing in 2012, when he wasn’t exactly holding out for another homecoming.

“It’s a tough dream, but, you know, it’s my dream.

So I’m probably going to play until they tell me I can’t anymore,” Holm said.

“Don’t want to leave with any regrets, you know. Baseball is pretty much all I’ve ever known. Getting ready for a game, it still gives me butterflies, so it’s still exciting for me.”

A starter for the Eastern Division at the 2013 Midwest League All-Star game, Holm opened this season with Advanced-A Lakeland.

In 34 games, he batted .215 with 28 hits and 26 strikeouts in 130 at-bats. He rejoined the Whitecaps in May, and was hitting .243 with four home runs and 22 RBIs in 39 games entering Thursday.

“Over the years, I know that, yeah, Jeff was struggling a little bit in the Florida State League. He was in the low .200s,” Graham said.

“We needed a bit of a leader down here for some young guys and a boost, so we sent him down here. … He’s doing well for us and there’s no reason why if he continues it, Detroit might make a decision to move guys. But at this stage, you know, he’s part of this team, and I welcome him here.”

While acknowledging Holm’s struggles, Detroit officials also thought his experience would help jolt the Whitecaps’ clubhouse. West Michigan edged South Bend by one-half game for the firsthalf Eastern Division title, as Holm hit .274 in 16 games before the All-Star break.

“It is what it is. They told me the Whitecaps needed an extra bat and they need to

make the playoffs and I did what I could, and now we are in the playoffs,” Holm said.

“And now we’re just trying to win the whole thing. And at the end of the day, I’ve still got a jersey on, so got to be happy about that.”

A first baseman for much of his prep and college career, Holm got acclimated to shifting early as a pro after the Tigers drafted Vanderbilt first baseman Aaron Westlake in the third round in 2011, nine rounds ahead of Holm.

He hopes for a better outcome than during his most recent homecoming. Starting one game each at first base and left field in July 2012, Holm went 1 for 8 with two RBIs as the Cougars won two of three.

Holm still stayed at the team hotel then, but snuck home for a couple of dinners.

These days, his parents, John and Janine, are selling the family home after retiring and relocating to Florida.

An outfielder, John Holm played with Quad Cities, then a California Angels affiliate, in 1973. Jeff Holm already has surpassed his dad’s career, but he still feels urgency in trying to point his own on an upwardly mobile path.

A steady stream of juice and fruit chunks flowed from the overflowing mouths of competitors – splashing on bare chests and leaving behind puddles of sticky juice and scraps of fruit that escaped the eating frenzy.

Vicki Foley lost her son, Chris, several years ago. Accounts vary, but Lea Minalga of Hearts of Hope in Geneva reports attending more than 100 funerals of victims of substance use; mostly young people, such as Chris. Full of promise with the prime of life ahead.

Many parents grieve privately, never really forgetting, but trying to put the

tragic loss in the past.

Hats off to Foley and her fellow volunteers. They tell the story of Chris and the others every day of the year on the day of the Chris Walk.

Kane County Fair announces contest winners KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com Sophia Peterson of Elgin (junior division), and Erin Newman of St. Charles (senior division) were named the first-place winners of the 31st annual Kane County Fair Talent Contest.

The talent contest took place July 14 as a “pre-fair showcase” at the Kane County Fairgrounds in St. Charles.

Peterson sang an opera solo of “Ave Maria” and Erin Newman sang a vocal solo of “Maybe This Time.”

Contestants were judged by technique, stage presentation, audience appeal and appearance. Both contestants received a $200 first-place prize. Other cash prizes awarded included a second-place prize of $125 and a third-place prize of $75. All other finalists received $20 per act.

As first-place winners of the Kane County Fair Talent Contest, Peterson and Newman will compete in their division and automatically represent Kane County in January at the Illinois Association of Agricultural Fairs Official Talent Contest State Competition in Springfield.

“We are so proud of the Kane County Fair Talent Contest,” said Larry Rossi, RPM Creative Music and coordinator of the talent contest, in a news release. “This year was such an impressive range of quality tal-

ent. We strive to grow this competition and continue to provide young people with a friendly competition to encourage and showcase their talent and gifts.”

NEIGHBORS BRIEF Batavia club donates to Feed the Kids program The Batavia Mother’s Club Foundation recently donated $2,000 to the Humanitarian Service Project’s Feed the Kids program.

The project’s Feed the Kids program provides groceries to impoverished families. During the long summer months when children do not receive federally subsidized meals from schools, the grocery packages provide necessary nutrients in the form of 15 varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables, seven frozen meat packages, three boxes of non-perishables and, at least, four loaves of bread, states a news release.

The donation was made as part of the club’s efforts to support local nonprofits throughout the greater Fox Valley area, states the release. In order to raise money for organizations like the Humanitarian Service Project, each year the club hosts fundraisers like the Fox Trot 5K and 10K. Batavia Mother’s Club has donated to the project for the last five years, allowing the club to help combat hunger in DuPage and Kane counties, the release states.

The musical comedy twists the lives of familiar characters into a brand new story. “Into the Woods” opened on Broadway in 1987 to earn three Tony Awards and four Drama Desk Awards, including Most Outstanding Musical, state a news release.

In 2013 the manufacturer’s asking price for a base Outlander Sport SE was $23,695.

This year it went up $300 to $23,995. The SE model is an upgrade from the base $19,470 ES, which also shared the bumped-up price.

Mitsubishi officials probably thought a more economical engine, improved interior (materials) and a telescoping steering wheel were worth the price increase.

This 2014 compact sport utility vehicle has tough competition, whether it is the Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4, Honda CRV or Ford Escape.

It compares well with that competition. Standard features include paddle shifters behind the steering wheel (with the continuously variable transmission), 18-inch alloy wheels, digital high definition radio, satellite radio, smart start (dashboard pushbutton), remote entry, high intensity discharge headlights, and a 6.1-inch touchscreen audio display with rear view camera for both the ES and SE models. Power windows (express one-touch for driver), door locks and exterior mirrors are standard on both ES and SE. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, as is front-wheel-drive on the $19,470 ES. On a recently tested SE model, the $23,695 included a CVT mated to the 2-liter, 148-horsepower, four-cylinder engine, and front-wheel-drive was replaced by all-wheeldrive.

Tires (P225) and wheels (alloy, aluminum 18-inch), seven airbags, and Bluetooth hands-free telephone are standard and above the norm.

This was a top-of-the-line SE model and upgrades included automatic climate control and heated power front seats.

Insulating factors are average as, during the test week, engine and road noise did come into the cabin. The noise was not distracting. The strut and multilink suspension system also is average.

The SE model of Mitsubishi’s Outlander Sport powertrain is a 2-liter, four-cylinder, 148-horsepower engine mated to a continuously variable transmission.

Overall though, the ride in the Sport was pleasant during the week of testing.

The 2-liter, 148-horsepower, 16-valve, dual overhead cam, four-cylinder engine is not a barn burner. While mated to the CVT, acceleration from 0 to 60 miles per hour will consume 10 seconds. On the other hand, owners will save money at the gas pumps. Fuel usage was 26 miles per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline.

Disc brakes can bring this 3,263-pound Sport to a stop from 60 mph in a distance of 130 to 140 feet, which is average for this type of vehicle.

SE amenities include air conditioning, cruise control, climate control with a micron

filter, rain-sensing windshield wipers, fog lights in front, lighted vanity mirrors on front visors, variable intermittent wipers, two 12-volt outlets, a 140-watt, six-speaker sound system for AM-FM-satellite radio, compact disc and MP3 players, armrests, cupholders, storage bins and rear privacy glass. The touch screen dashboard controls were awkward and there was no safe way for the driver to tune the radio while driving because it takes too much attention away from the road.

This vehicle has several technological marvels offered as options. They are adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance (panic stops automatic if sensors detect trouble, but this system works only if the vehicle is traveling at 20 miles per hour or less) and lane departure warning system.

Standard safety features include seven airbags (front, front sides, overhead for two

rows and knees for front seat occupants). These airbags complement other safety inclusions, such as traction and stability controls, a four-wheel antilock braking system, latch system for child seats and hill start assist.

The vehicle design is not as curved as that of competitors.

This means, even though it has curves, it is more upright, and it is easier to fit clumsy items into the storage area.

That is a positive to this vehicle. During the test week, awkward lengths and widths of construction materials were angled into the storage area through the relatively large liftgate opening. Once inside, they were stored in the cargo area, barely fitting between wheel wells, but fit they did.

The 60-40 split rear seat folds flat to create 49.5 cubic feet of storage space. There are inset bins toward the rear behind the wheel wells. Under a floor lid, there is a cavity to

hold the temporary spare tire and wheel.

Leg room is good front and rear for adults in the 6-foot range or even several inches taller.

Three major automobile manufacturers assemble vehicles in Illinois.

Ford Motor Co. has an assembly plant in Chicago; Chrysler has one in Belvidere; and Mitsubishi has another in Normal.

The Normal facility is the only assembly plant for Mitsubishi in North America, and the Outlander Sport is assembled there.

This compact and modest sport utility vehicle is the sales warrior for Mitsubishi.

Warranty coverage is five years or 60,000 miles with the powertrain covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Roadside assistance is available for five years. Mileage is unlimited for assistance during that time frame.

‘Yves Saint Laurent’: A tired portrait of a tortured artist

By STEPHANIE MERRY The Washington Post Yves Saint Laurent, as portrayed in the French biopic bearing his name, comes across as two people.

There was Yves before the drugs: Born in Algeria, he was a soft-spoken, painfully shy prodigy who took over the Dior fashion house while he was still in his 20s. And then there was the more uninhibited Yves, a philanderer who snorted cocaine, went out dancing and alienated his closest friends and longtime lover.

Neither of these characters is particularly compelling to watch, especially when the plot follows such a familiar path. A genius battles his demons and comes out the other side.

It is perhaps smart that director Jalil Lespert lets the story be told by the designer’s more likable other half, Pierre Berge (played

by Guillaume Gallienne), a businessman who turns out to be the unexpected hero of “Yves Saint Laurent.” Pierre narrates as if he’s reading a posthumous love letter to the designer (played by Pierre Niney), who died in 2008 after popularizing the Mondrian dress, tuxedoes for women and high-end, ready-to-wear clothing.

Pierre is steadfast in his support of his companion.

After Yves has an episode that lands him in a mental hospital, he is fired from Dior. No matter: Pierre makes sure Yves is compensated for his unceremonious termination and helps raise the funds so that Yves can start his own fashion house. From there, the two become business partners, even as their romantic relationship falters.

Yves suffered from manic depression and addiction problems, and the movie conveys this with an atmosphere that is solemn to the point of being dour. Even the great triumphs seem to remain under a heavy cloud. When one of Yves’ muses, while languishing around a pool with a group of partyers, playfully interrogates him about his favorite things, he responds shyly and awkwardly. Even his happiness feels tempered by a fear of opening up.

The result is a movie

that may be true to the designer’s life, as it’s based on a biography by Laurence Benaim. But it isn’t particularly enjoyable or insightful. Sometimes morose geniuses can be fascinatingly complicated or bewitchingly tortured, but Yves consistently comes across as simply sullen.

Even Pierre admits that the designer was only happy twice a year — during the spring and fall fashion show seasons.

After that, you may have to decide whether you still WANT her to honor that long-ago promise to stay together until your children are adults. You might find it helpful to stage some of these conversations in the office of a licensed marriage and family counselor.

New treatments hold promise for those with hepatitis C Dear Doctor K: My son has a hepatitis C infection, based on a blood test. The doctor says he’s OK now, but could someday become seriously ill. I hear there are new treatments for hepatitis C. Is there reason for optimism?

Dear Reader: Hepatitis C is caused by a viral infection that inflames and damages the liver. (“Hepatitis” means inflammation of the liver.) The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is usually transmitted through contact with infected blood. HCV can cause short-term (acute) or long-term (chronic) hepatitis C. Most people with acute hepatitis C eventually develop chronic hepatitis C. Hepatitis C may not cause symptoms for 20, even 30, years.

Unless they are tested for the virus, many people do not even know that they are infected.

But even without causing symptoms, the virus often is slowly damaging the liver. Eventually, some people develop symptoms such as weight loss, fatigue or aching joints. Hepatitis C virus infections also can lead to cirrhosis (scar tissue in the liver) and liver cancer. (On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put an illustration showing how HCV damages the liver.)

Not everyone infected with

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff hepatitis C needs treatment. For those who do, the treatment can cause unpleasant symptoms. Until recently, treatment involved up to a year of weekly injections with peginterferon. This is a man-made form of an antiviral substance produced by the immune system called interferon. Side effects include depression, anxiety, anemia and fatigue.

Peginterferon is taken in combination with ribavirin (Virazole), an antiviral drug. The effectiveness of this drug combination varies based on the subtype of the virus you have. (Once you are diagnosed with hepatitis C, blood tests determine your subtype. In the United States, the most common subtype is genotype 1.)

In 2011, the FDA approved two new antiviral drugs that could be taken by mouth. Either of these drugs taken with peginterferon and ribavirin eliminates HCV in up to 90 percent of patients with genotype 1.

In more good news, two studies published earlier this year report that a combination of several oral

antiviral drugs clears the virus from the liver in more than 95 percent of people – in just 12 weeks.

Quite a number of viruses infect the liver and can cause serious disease. When I was in medical school, we hadn’t yet discovered most of the viruses that cause hepatitis, and the ones we had discovered accounted for only a small fraction of all cases.

The discovery of the two viruses that cause the most serious liver disease, hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus, has been the result of brilliant and painstaking research by many people. This discovery has led to blood tests to diagnose the viruses. Research also has led to a vaccine for hepatitis B, and to the powerful new treatments for hepatitis C virus that you asked about. This research has been funded by a combination of tax dollars and investment by the pharmaceutical industry.

So, to answer your question, I believe there is reason for optimism. Your son should discuss these newer treatment options with his doctor.

Helpful test-taking suggestions Dear Teens: You have taken many tests during your educational career, and you are bound to take many more. Dr. Edward Newman, a Los Angeles psychotherapist who counsels teens, wants to offer some useful suggestions on how to do your very best when taking a test.

Dr. Newman says to first read through a test and to answer all the questions you are positive that you know.

This will build your confidence and focus your thinking. Next, go back and work on those questions you are fairly sure you know the answers to. Answer all of these. Finally, spend the remaining time on the questions that stump you. Compare these questions to the ones you have already answered. How might they be similar? Is there a pattern to the type of question asked?

Does the subject hint at an answer?

Do everything possible to answer every question whether the test is true or false, multiple choice or essay. Sometimes a teacher will give a student partial credit for an incorrect or incomplete essay question because the student might have impressed the teacher with knowledge on a related area.

It’s time for your mother and you to meet with your counselor to discuss your “problem” with some of your teachers. Then, if possible, have mom make an after-school appointment with your teacher to find out what mom and the teacher can do to help you.

That does not sound like a good idea. At the bridge table, reading is very important. In particular, third hand and declarer should read the opening lead, working out what the leader has in that suit.

In this example deal, how should South plan the play in four spades after West leads the heart nine in answer to his partner’s overcall in the suit?

The North-South bidding was a tad aggressive, but we all love that vulnerable game bonus.

South starts with four potential losers: two diamonds and two clubs. However, given East’s bid, it is tempting to assume that he has the club ace. But if, say, South takes the first trick with his heart jack, draws trumps, and plays a diamond, East can win and shift to the club queen to defeat the contract.

What does the heart-nine lead indicate?

That East has the heart king and 10. How does that help?

South should cover the nine with dummy’s queen and take East’s king with his ace. Then, after drawing trumps ending in the dummy, South plays a heart to his eight and discards a club from the dummy on the heart jack. South takes five spades, three hearts, one diamond and an eventual club ruff in the dummy.

Note that if South calls for dummy’s heart four at trick one, East should not play third hand high; he should play low, not wasting an honor when declarer is marked with the heart jack and ace.
