Replicated Viking warship Time capsule to be created Preserve District headquarters, open for tours Saturday for centennial celebration 1996 S. Bookworm Foundation collects books for Kane County children in need

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com AURORA – Rosary High School senior Morgan Martinez said she feels lucky she had a lot of books to read growing up.

To make sure youngsters have plenty of opportunities to read, as well, the 17-yearold Sugar Grove resident in May started The Bookworm Foundation of Kane County.

The foundation has donated more than 1,000 books to such organizations as the Friends of Aurora’s After School Programs, the Marie Wilkinson Center Childhood Development Center in Aurora and the World Relief DuPage organization.

“I want to help as many kids as possible and give more kids a chance to read,” Martinez said.

County sheriff seeks additional staff

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – If Kane County Sheriff Donald Kramer had his wish, his office next year would add five officers each to public safety and corrections.

It’s a staffing request that would cost about $1 million – an amount that would be a “huge increase” to his budget, so he understands County Board members’ concerns, he said Thursday after presenting his 2016 budget to a County Board committee.

Judicial and Public Safety Committee members stressed that Kramer’s budget request – along with proposals from others in the county, including KaneComm, the public defender and the circuit clerk – is preliminary.

“To me, each department is giving us their wish list,” said Kurt Kojzarek, R-Gilberts.

For example, State’s Attorney Joe McMahon also is planning for additional staff, a request that primarily stems from shifting responsibilities from local police departments to his office.

The first-term sheriff was among the last to present. After hearing other officials requesting slight increases, John Martin, R-Geneva, said Kramer’s proposal “kind of takes your breath away.”

Theresa Barreiro, D-Aurora, asked Kramer how he expects the board to agree to his request when other officials “almost have to beg for 1 percent.”

Kramer – who came under fire early this year for

forfeiting revenue from the U.S. Marshals Service – acknowledged his request might not be granted in its entirety. But, he said, even partial fulfillment – especially in certain areas in public safety – could make a “big difference.”

The sheriff’s office currently has 85 officers in public safety and 122 correctional employees, including 102 officers, Kramer said.

With five additional officers in public safety, Kramer said he would reinstate a traffic unit, add to the staff serving warrants, and boost personnel on the special operations unit that focuses on drugs and gangs.

More corrections officers would let him reopen a cell block in the jail, if necessary, he said.

The county’s fiscal year is Dec. 1 to Nov. 30.

Coroner: No disrespect intended with early exit from meeting

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Coroner Rob Russell said he didn’t intend to disrespect Kane County Board members by leaving a committee meeting early Thursday.

“I fully apologize if anybody was offended by that,” he said.

The Judicial and Public Safety Committee’s decision to table a resolution regarding a budget adjustment for his office led him to believe further budget discussions about his office also were tabled to next month, he said.

The committee tabled the resolution for an $88,000 budget adjustment early in the meeting because Assistant Finance Director Erica Waggoner said the coroner’s office is trending $32,000 over budget for this year.

She said the $32,000 estimate is an overall overage, whereas Russell’s resolution – which the finance department did not prepare – reflects two specific line items.

“The [finance] office was not

aware of this resolution,” Waggoner said.

The resolution was tied to the two biggest expenses in the coroner’s budget – autopsies and salaries – Russell said, noting that ties into budget discussions for next year. Discussion about the 2016 budget was slated for later in the meeting, but Russell left before it was his turn to present.

Committee member Theresa Barreiro, D-Aurora, said she would have appreciated him staying for the full meeting, like the rest of the officials in attendance.

His absence was, she said, “very insulting to us as a board.”

Committee Chairman Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, characterized it as unfair, and member Kurt Kojzarek, R-Gilberts, said he had hoped for answers to questions from last month.

Regarding Russell’s resolution, Castro said it is “very early” for him to ask for supplemental funds because the county’s fiscal year doesn’t end until Nov. 30, meaning he has months to mitigate anticipated overages.

The Finery and Blacksmith Bar will open to the public starting at 3 p.m. Tuesday at 305 W. Main St., St. Charles, the former location of the Copper Fox. The restaurant will accept walk-ins Tuesday, but reservations are strongly encouraged starting Wednesday through www.thefineryrestaurant.com or by calling 630-940-2380.

The American bistro-style restaurant will seat nearly 100 people, including the bar space, and will offer high-end comfort food with an atmosphere to match, co-owner David Reyes said. Reyes is opening the restaurant with wife and fellow chef Juliette Reyes.

change according to season but will offer a selection of poultry and meat (flat-iron steak), seafood (grilled red trout), appetizers, salads, homemade pasta and more. One of the staples will be country pheasant, David Reyes said.

Reyes said he would like to offer a family-style supper on Sundays in the future with an entree such as roasted leg of lam or a whole roasted chicken surrounded by many sides, he said.

The 55-bottle wine list will include 15 labels that will be available by the glass and will continue to grow, David Reyes said.

They have experience working in Michelin-starred restau-

rants, with David Reyes in Southern France and Juliette Reyes in Chicago.

The co-owners will top out their support staff at under 20 people, which includes General Manager David Marzorati. The restaurant will focus on locally sourced food and beverages, David Reyes said.

After looking at a few local cities, David and Juliette Reyes chose St. Charles as a happy medium between Chicago and the farms out west, in addition to their location being in a historically significant building.

“There is already a great collection of restaurants in the area,” David Reyes said. “To be a part of that is exactly what we’re trying to do.”

League members discuss state’s budget woes Part of League’s new discussion group

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Members of the League of Women Voters of Central Kane County on Thursday voiced concerns about Gov. Bruce Rauner’s plan to cap property taxes and the impact it would have on local school districts.

“They are going to be in real trouble when the cap goes on,” said Jean Pierce, League Issues Specialist, during a discussion on the state’s budget woes.

Pierce led a discussion about the state’s budget as part of the League’s new program called Drinks and Dialogue, designed to allow people to share opinions and ideas about topical issues.

Thursday’s discussion, which was open to the public, was held at Cotto A Legna restaurant in downtown Geneva.

The League of Women Voters as an organization has endorsed such measures as raising income tax rates, expanding the sales tax base to

include services, refinancing the state’s debt and taxing retirement income as a way to address the state’s budget deficit.

Pierce and other League members said several nearby states also tax service industries, including Iowa. Those participating in Thursday’s discussion agreed Illinois should be taxing service industries. They also agreed Illinois should restate the 5 percent temporary income-tax increase.

Geneva resident Andrea Alvarez said she decided to attend Thursday’s program because of the importance of the issue. She also said because the League is nonpartisan, it provides information that is factual.

On Thursday, Alvarez decided to join the League.

Drinks and Dialogue will be offered for one hour starting at 7 p.m. monthly on the third Thursday of the month. Information is available by going to the League’s website, www. lwvckc.org.

Appeals court upholds dismissal of class-action complaint in Richmond-Davis schools case

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The Illinois Second District Appellate Court in Elgin on Thursday upheld a lower court’s decision to dismiss a class-action complaint against St. Charles School District 303 in the reorganization of Richmond-Davis schools.

Parents of students at the schools alleged District 303 had acted contrary to the Illinois School Code when it converted Davis to a school for students in kindergarten through second grade and Richmond into a campus for students in third through fifth grade.

In filing the class-action complaint in October 2013, the parents claimed the district did not “give the parents of the children forced to attend Richmond a ‘choice’ to transfer them to another school ‘in contravention of the law.’ ” Some parents put their chil-

dren in private schools at a cost in excess of $50,000, according to the suit. They sought, among other things, compensatory damages, attorney fees and costs, according to the suit.

In a 10-page decision, the three appellate judges agreed with the Kane County Circuit Court ruling the suit was barred by state law, and the school code did not allow for a private cause of action for damages.

St. Charles attorney Timothy Dwyer represented the parents.

“Obviously, we are disappointed,” Dwyer said. “I think both trial courts and the appellate court said the school district obviously violated the law, but we were not able to get any remedy.”

Parent Larry Norgaard said he has mixed emotions at this point.

“I objected to the railroading,” Norgaard said, referring to the way the reorganization

plan was put in place for the 2011-12 school year.

“They did not address the Hispanic population, which was 51 percent, in their language,” Norgaard said. “That is not fair.

They were just as concerned as we were.”

Superintendent Donald Schlomann said he hoped this would complete the trio of legal cases that arose from the reorganization.

“Should a decision, made by the board of education, [result in the district] being required to pay local community members in a class action?” Schlomann said. “And the court found, in this case, the answer to that is ‘no.’ ” Schlomann said the district now can be “focused on the classroom, not the courtroom.”

“We are trying to make sure we have a quality education for our children, whether they are at Richmond, Davis, or any of our schools,” Schlomann said.

POLICE REPORTS Kane County Sheriff’s Office • Holly M. Pertell, 36, of the 500 block of South State Street, Elgin, was charged Sunday, June 28, with harassment by telephone.

The charge stemmed from St. Charles.

• A resident of the 0N500 block of Fieldstone Street, Geneva, reported Tuesday, June 30, that a fraudulent credit card charge was made at a grocery store in Chicago for $320.67.

• Mailboxes in the 36W200 block of Fieldcrest Drive and the 5N200 block of Fox Bluff Drive, both in St. Charles, were reported damaged Thursday, July 2.

• A 2013 Audi was reported burglarized Friday, July 3, in the 7N000 block of Plymouth Court, St. Charles. A laptop, designer purse, a women’s Rolex watch and an engagement ring and wedding band were reported stolen. The estimated value of the missing items totaled $19,150.

• A Lexus was reported burglarized Friday, July 3, in the 36W400 block of Bristol Road, St. Charles.

About $20 in cash and $150 to $200 in gift cards were reported stolen. An iPod and a Kindle were not taken.

• A 2005 Honda in the 36W200 block of River View Court, St. Charles, was reportedly rifled through Saturday, July 4. Nothing

appeared missing.

• Four tires on a Ford Escape were reported vandalized Sunday, July 5, in the 4N500 block of Mohican Lane, Campton Township. The estimated loss was $550.

• A resident of the 48W100 block of Milnamow Drive, Maple Park, reported Friday, June 19, someone threw pool accessories into her pool overnight.

The items included a cabinet containing a cleaning device with an electrical box valued at $400.

The report indicated juveniles were involved.

• A 2014 Volkswagen was reported burglarized Friday, July 3, in the 7N100 block of Windsor Drive, St. Charles Township. Debit cards were reported missing.

Also that day, a Chevrolet was reported burglarized in the 7N300 block of Windsor Drive. There, a laptop; a wallet containing identification, credit cards and currency; a men’s Rolex watch; an engagement ring and wedding band; a cellphone and a briefcase were reported stolen. The loss was estimated at $18,450.

• A 2007 Toyota was reported burglarized Monday, July 6, in the 36W600 block of Andrea Court, St. Charles. About $80 in U.S. currency, $140 in Chinese currency and $80 in Japanese currency were reported stolen.

Seventh annual Chris Walk to raise New Patients Welcome! awareness of drug, heroin abuse

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The seventh annual Chris’ Walk Night Out Against Substance Abuse will be from 4 to 8 p.m. July 25 at Gunnar Anderson Forest Preserve, 719 S Batavia Ave., Geneva.

The event, which raises awareness of heroin and addiction, includes a 5K run or walk, silent auction, Zumba, speakers, Narcan training, face painting, children’s games, Good Humor Ice Cream and demonstrations

by Glowby the Bubbler. The 5K cost is $25 in advance online or $30 the day of the event.

The event comes after the eighth anniversary of Chris Foley’s death on July 15, 2007, from a heroin overdose, said his mother, Vicki Foley, of St. Charles. Foley is an employee of Shaw Media.

“Heroin still continues to be an issue in our communities, along with prescription drug abuse, illicit drugs and new synthetics, and loved ones continue to use and overdose,” Foley said.

“We chose to do the Chris Walk in the month he died,” Foley added. “It’s hard. It’s very hard to do, but it’s very important. We do it as a memorial to Chris, as well as to raise awareness.”

Kane County Sheriff Don Kramer and Kane County Coroner Rob Russell are scheduled to speak at the event, she said.

This year, in addition to vendors, Chris Walk will host more children’s events and activities to make it more family oriented, Foley said. These include a professional face painter and Glowby – who blows giant bubbles.

Zumba will be offered for $15, but it will be free for those

who donate an item to Lazarus House. The Chris Walk website lists items needed by Lazarus House.

The silent auction items include a diamond necklace, diamond earrings, framed autographed Blackhawks pictures, and Great America and Raging Waves passes.

Chris Walk, a nonprofit organization, also relies on the event to fundraise for its advocacy, awareness and support of substance abuse prevention programs.

Chris Walk hosted a January program, Straight Talk About Drugs, at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre, and is planning a fall event for later this year, Foley said.

Festivals hard to swallow When I was a kid, my mother would spoon heaping portions of rutabaga onto my plate. “It’s good for you!” she declared, expecting me to eat the gooey, yellowy mound.

I took a teeny taste and said I hated it. This prompted further encouragements and threats: “No chocolate cake if you don’t finish your rutabaga.” So, trying not to barf, I force-fed myself, wishing for some chocolate cake to help wash it down.

My aversion to rutabaga gives you a taste of how I feel about Kane County’s summer festivals. Look, I get it: These events feed our towns’ economies. Businesses and charities thrive on out-of-towners swarming vehicle-free streets, sale-laden shops and standing-room-only restaurants.

Parents, too, love festival days, enticing Xbox gamers and Nickelodeon addicts out of the house by promising Swedish pancakes, roller coasters, and Sergeant Pepper sound- and look-alikes.

However, when seeing that steaming bowl of rutabaga, many indigenous folks like me dodge the three-sided tents, carnival rides and gluten-rich treats. We detour around St. Charles’ RiverFest, skirt Geneva’s Swedish Days and balk before Batavia’s Windmill City Festival.

Smart hometown natives skedaddle. My wife, Tia, swears the timing of her road trip to Traverse City (part of a ladies’ foursome of teaching colleagues) bridging Swedish Days was coincidental. Ha! A specious excuse to convince me she doesn’t mind alien hordes taking the good library parking spaces and restaurant reservation times.

See, crowds, heat, noise and waiting in lines don’t do it for me. I’ll even take the mosquitoes, ticks and garter snakes I encountered while fly fishing a quiet North Woods stream over dodging baby carriages and bullmastiffs to reach a golden-fried trans-fat goodie.

However, on occasion, I lose my sanity and venture into a fes-

Me: “Hmm, maybe you’re right. But next year. I need 51 weeks to prepare. A guy can’t handle that much hilarity overnight; impairs the cranky personality.”

Them: “I hear you. Well, back to work!”

With that, I navigate home through a sea of family-filled SUVs, their tattooed windows promoting the Moline Spreaders and New Buffalo Sunburners.

But not before I gulp down a scrumptious almond mazariner cupcake, take in a few main stage acts and cheer on the fire hose challengers. After all, even a curmudgeon’s got to live a little when there’s so much to live for.

Stunning Pluto visit shows what NASA still can attain BLOOMBERG NEWS The first detailed glimpse of Pluto was a stunner: A mottled, multicolored orb, shimmering 3 billion miles from Earth. It has craters, “great mounds,” a mysterious dark belt along the equator – even suggestions of snowfall.

The photos came from the NASA spacecraft New Horizons, which has reached the outskirts of the solar system after a nine-year journey. By almost any measure, the mission is already a success and serves as a fitting capstone for the era of exploration that the U.S. began half a century ago. The next space age probably will look quite different – private enterprise can play a greater role, and NASA should let it – but it will be an exhilarating one all the same.

It’s worth dwelling for a

moment on NASA’s latest achievement. Traveling at more than 30,000 mph, New Horizons is the fastest spacecraft ever launched. At about $700 million, it was a modest expense by spacefaring standards. And its measurements may yet yield crucial clues about how the early solar system evolved and how life began on Earth.

The U.S. is now the only country to have visited every planet in the solar system (Pluto’s unconscionable downgrading to a “dwarf planet” notwithstanding).

Interest in space nowadays is increasingly commercial. Intrepid entrepreneurs ply the heavens.

Satellite startups are pursuing intriguing new business opportunities. At the same time, the thrill of exploration remains. The possibility of life existing elsewhere in the universe

looks increasingly plausible.

And NASA’s Kepler mission has discovered hundreds of new planets beyond the solar system – some of them very much like our own. Space hasn’t looked this interesting in a generation.

Which makes articulating a vision for the U.S. space program all the more important. NASA’s next major ambition – getting people to Mars – is electrifying, yet the plan to get there is expensive, behind schedule and excessively vague. A more realistic accounting of the costs involved, which seem certain to stretch into the hundreds of billions over the next two decades, is vital.

The New Horizons mission is the latest confirmation that the American space program still is capable of accomplishing great things.

It shouldn’t be the last.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Twenty boys and girls players delighted in golf’s subtleties for another morning Thursday as the two-day St. Charles Junior Tournament concluded.

For St. Charles East sophomore Alex McDonald, however, securing the event’s more obvious spoils meant enduring something blunt.

With McDonald sizing up a slightly downhill, 5-foot par putt on the ninth hole at Pottawatomie Golf Course, East junior Charlie Downing wandered to his side with a message.

“He pulled me over when I was reading my putt,” McDonald said. “He told me that I’m beating him by one right now.

Yeah, so it was a must-make.”

McDonald sank the putt to finish with a 10-over-par 80 for 18 holes, earning the Boys 1415 title as well as overall male medalist honors. Downing, the Boys 16-17 winner, shot an 81.

McDonald’s feat netted not only a first-place trophy, but a 2016 Pottawatomie season pass.

Ditto for Girls 15-17 champ and female medalist Rose Bundy, an East junior who also won with an 80 and planned to purchase a season pass next year, anyway.

Looking at her mom, Teresa, and referring to her parents, Bundy said, “Now they’re going to get me pizza tonight.”

“I was hitting my spots and they were pounding it into the ground,” Podany said. “My defense was good behind me so that helped also. It got a little slippery and muddy in that fourth inning (when the game was postponed) and really just tried to throw strikes and make sure if they did hit it, that it wasn’t great contact and resulted in outs.”

In was unclear whether Podany will head back to the mound today when play resumed, but the right-hander did shake his head yes when asked if he could pitch today.

“We were fortunate to have [Podany] pitch today,” Asquini said. “He threw Saturday with his travel team, but he’s going to be one of our guys next year and was this past spring too. After a few minutes, the ball was tossed back, sparking interest about whether there was anything going on, outside of a simple game of catch being played. It turns out the teams were writing on the ball and playing games such a hangman, tic-tac-toe and truth or dare.

Several athletes among the girls group – five Saints in the 15-17 division, three incoming North freshmen in the 12-14 division – only recently began playing golf.

Sarah Arnold, in just her first full year of golfing, shaved six strokes from Wednesday’s score, shooting 41 Thursday to finish with an 88 and win the Girls 12-14 title.

“The best part of my game

is mostly long hitting, distance,” Arnold said. “And putting.”

Hmm. The first and last acts of a golfer on most holes.

Sounds about right for someone who birdied Nos. 1 and 9 Thursday.

Bundy also is a relative newcomer, advancing from sporadic recreational rounds with her grandfather to a diligent practice and playing schedule in her third high school season.

In 2014, she missed qualifying for the IHSA Class AA state meet by one stroke, fueling her training for the past several months.

“Failing over and over and over, not getting what I want, has just made me work harder,” Bundy said. “And now it’s starting to pay off in the last couple weeks. Just practicing every day, it’s going to pay off, just like it did today.”

With a season pass in tow, the cycle figures to repeat itself in the near future.

As for the pizza, that’s never a bad thing.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East baseball coach Len Asquini really couldn’t have asked for too much more from his team after three innings of its Phil Lawler Summer Classic St Charles East Regional final Thursday against Waubonsie Valley.

The Saints scored a run in each inning while holding Waubonsie Valley scoreless.

However, the Warriors had someone on their side that East could not control – Mother Nature.

Rain postponed play with the Saints leading, 3-0, with one out in the top of the fourth and is scheduled to resume at 11 a.m. today at East.

Aside from the weather forcing the Saints to carry the momentum from Thursday to today, Asquini really doesn’t think it will affect his “focused”group.

“I really don’t think it does too much damage,” Asquini said. “Our guys came out extremely focused and motivated today. We talked about trying to make sure there wasn’t let down after a big win, and I didn’t see any of that out there in the first three or so innings.”

Asquini and the Saints came into Thursday’s action having beaten rival St. Charles North on Wednesday to advance to the St. Charles East Regional final of the Phil Lawler Summer Classic.

The winner of today’s resumed game will advance to the state tournament for a game at noon Monday against Libertyville at North Central College.

With the assistance and guidance of the Fox Valley Habitat, an affiliate with Habitat for Humanity International, Latricia Stone is hoping to move into a home in Aurora later this year that is currently in the process of being rebuilt after previously being donated to the organization in October 2014 by an anonymous donor.

A small ceremony at the home involved several volunteers and executives, and included an appearance by Bears Hall of Fame defensive lineman, Dan Hampton, where he signed autographs for fans Thursday morning in order to raise awareness for Habitat.

Habitat for Humanity rehabilitates homes through an extensive process involving volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and building materials. Fox Valley Habitat has built or rehabbed 50 homes so far, with an additional three in the works.

Schwarber, 22, is to be recalled from Triple-A Iowa to take the roster spot of catcher Miguel Montero, who is to be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a thumb injury suffered Saturday.

ipated in the event, which took place at the Royal Fox Country Club in St. Charles. Money was raised through sponsorships, cash donations, golfing, dinner fees, silent and live auctions and a tin-cup raffle.

The St. Charles-based Lazarus House helps neighbors in crisis by providing shelter, food, education and skills. And the St. Charles Kiwanis is a group of ser-

vice-minded men and women who help more than 25 agencies associated with the needs of children in the TriCity area, according to the release.

Make diet sodas an occasional treat, not a daily beverage Dear Doctor K: I love diet soda, but I’ve been hearing that it’s not good for me. Is it so bad that I should stop drinking it?

Dear Reader: The introduction of sugar-free sodas (or “soft drinks”) decades ago seemed like a blessing.

Now you could enjoy the flavor, carbonation and caffeine of soda without the calories and weight gain. (Not to mention the diseases that go along with obesity, such as diabetes and heart disease.) What’s not to like?

I surely believed it: I’ve been drinking a diet soda nearly every day and avoiding sugary drinks for 30 years. But there are growing doubts about whether diet sodas really help people lose weight and avoid diabetes.

First, studies have found that people who drink sugar-free sodas are at least as likely as those who drink sugary sodas to develop metabolic syndrome. People with metabolic syndrome, in turn, are more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes, and the diseases linked to diabetes.

Second, studies indicate artificial sweeteners may increase the brain’s desire for sugar. They are so sweet, compared to sugar, that they may lead you to crave other

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff sweet foods. You drink a diet soda or two, and then an hour later you crave those cookies -- more than you would have if you had been drinking sugary soda.

Then, recently, I read a study that floored me. It’s just one study, and therefore it may not be true.

But it appeared to be carefully done and was published in a top journal, Nature. The study examined gut bacteria, which live in the intestines of humans and other animals.

Gut bacteria help break down carbohydrates in food into simple sugars. It’s these simple sugars that get into the bloodstream and that add calories and weight.

Some bacteria break down complex carbohydrates into simple sugars very efficiently. Others, very inefficiently. After mice were given artificial sweeteners – saccharine, sucralose and aspartame – the bacteria in their intestines changed. The number of efficient bacteria went up and the number of inefficient bacteria went down.

The end result was that sugar-free

sodas caused more simple sugars to be produced by gut bacteria – and absorbed into the blood.

So, while the artificial sweeteners themselves contained no calories, they changed the bacteria in the gut in a way that led the mice to absorb more calories, and to develop higher blood sugar levels, in comparison to mice fed real sugar.

The Nature study also included seven healthy human volunteers.

These people, who did not normally consume artificial sweeteners, were started on a diet that included them. Within a week, four of the seven had developed changes in their gut bacteria and higher blood sugar.

These studies do not prove that sugar-free sodas carry health risks.

Indeed, other studies have not found such risks. But the overall trend is cause for concern.

Does this mean you should never drink diet soda? I almost never say “never.” But I have made diet sodas an occasional treat, not a daily beverage.

4. He had a strong desire to drive long before he received his driver’s license.

5. He spends a lot of time working on his vehicle.

6. His driving reflects his moods. When he’s angry, he drives recklessly.

So far this week, we have been looking at suit-preference signals when partner is receiving a ruff.

However, it is possible to use suit-preference signals in nonruffing situations.

Agreed, these signals are not easy to employ, because you and your partner must watch the cards like eagles. But if you do, your defense will improve in great swoops. The opponents will be your prey, not the other way round!

South is in four hearts. West leads the diamond king. How should declarer plan the play, and how, without guesswork, should the defense overcome South’s best line?

Declarer has four losers: three spades and one diamond. But he has 10 potential winners: five hearts, two diamonds and three clubs. He should win the first trick with his diamond ace and immediately return his second diamond.

West wins with his queen, but what does he do next? If he finds a spade shift, the contract dies; but if he leads a club, South gets home.
