The club is accepting scholarship applications postmarked no later than Aug. 15 from students planning to attend or that are attending a college or university, according to a club news release.

Applicants must be a St. Charles-area high school graduate, GED recipient or nontraditional student entering a college or university. Direct relatives of Rotarians are not eligible.

Students will be evaluated on their completion of the application, financial need, community involvement, extracurricular activities, grade-point average and cultural experience. By NATALIE WICKMAN nwickman@shawmedia.com AURORA – Sheila Simon, lieutenant governor of Illinois, visited the Planned Parenthood: Aurora Health Center on Wednesday to advocate for comprehensive women’s health care coverage in the wake of a Senate vote and Supreme Court ruling against it.

On June 30, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Hobby Lobby in the case of Sebelius vs. Hobby Lobby, saying some for-profit corporations can object to paying for contraception insurance coverage on the basis of religious beliefs. A bill to override the Supreme Court decision failed to move ahead after a Senate vote Wednesday.

“I want to give full credit to [Sen.] Dick Durban for being one of the co-sponsors,” Simon said. “I really appreciate that, and I’m committed to helping him in whatever way to help pass [the bill] through when they bring it up again.”

Simon was joined by state Sen. Linda Holmes for a tour of the facility, which was led by Planned Parenthood employees. Impressed with the tour overall, Simon said the facility has a calming atmosphere and helpful staff.

“I came because I think it’s important that more of us pay attention to women’s health care issues now, particularly with recent decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court,” Simon said.

Those 16 forms do not include Plan B, Ella or intrauterine devices.

“ ... abortion-causing drugs go against our faith, and our family is now being forced to choose between following the laws of the land that we love or maintaining the religious beliefs that have made our business successful and have supported our family and thousands of our employees and their families,” said Hobby Lobby CEO David Green in a September statement.

Simon said a problem lies in the absence of co-pay for Hobby Lobby’s 16 types of covered birth control, since that makes it harder to afford, especially if a woman is working a minimum-wage job.

“For-profit companies will still be required to provide birth control with a co-pay under Illinois law, unless they are self-insured [like Hobby Lobby] or receive a state exemption under the Health Care Right of Conscience Act,” according to a statement from the Office of the Lieutenant Governor.

The Wednesday Senate vote is slated to be held again before the end of this year.

“I am a strong supporter of women, of our right to control our own destinies, to have appropriate health care available to us,” Simon said. “I’m really pleased to be here at a facility that does just that in Aurora.

And also to see the bank of people answering phone calls here in the building, whether it’s to schedule an appointment or answer questions.”

PHONE RECORDS SOUGHT State seeks answers in Geneva murder case

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office wants cellphone tower records in connection to the case of a Geneva man accused of killing his wife, according to court documents.

The State’s Attorney’s Office in a motion filed Monday requested the cell tower registration records for the cellphones of Shadwick R. King and his wife, Kathleen. Shadwick King, 47, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in her death.

The state alleges that King asphyxiated his wife on July 6 and placed her body on railroad tracks near their home, according to court records.

A female later identified as Shadwick Kathleen King R. King was spotted on the southernmost Union Pacific Railway tracks south of Esping Park, 227 Briar Lane in Geneva at 6:37 a.m. July 6 by a train operator on another track.

The State’s Attorney’s Office requested cell tower registration records from 10:30 p.m. July 5 to 11:30 a.m. July 6 for the two cellphone numbers to more precisely pinpoint the location of the cellphones

throughout that time period, according to the motion.

“It is believed that at all relevant times, the defendant had his cellphone with him, as well as having the victim’s cellphone with him at certain times,” Greg Sams, a Kane County assistant state’s attorney, wrote in the motion.

Kathleen King’s cellphone was found near her body, according to the motion. Shadwick King told police that he took his wife’s cellphone from her after an argument at about 4 a.m. July 6, according to court records.

Shadwick King on Wednesday appeared in court before Judge James Hallock in an orange jail uniform. He stood silently next to Assistant Public Defender Brenda Willett, who represented him during the hearing. Willett said she was at a conference Monday and Tuesday for the court’s case management system.

She said she received the motion for the cellphone tower records this morning and did not have time to review it.

Sams disputed Willett’s account during the court hearing and said the appropriate party in the Public Defender’s Office received notice of the motion Monday morning.

Hallock decided to continue the hearing on the motion to Thursday. Before King entered the courtroom, Willett objected to the Kane County Chronicle’s extended media coverage request to allow photographs to be taken during Shadwick’s court proceeding.

Hallock granted the request, which was filed less than the required advance period of 14 days before the proceeding because the court date was less than 14 days from the time of his Friday bond hearing.

The State’s Attorney’s Office also did not receive notice

He was born Dec. 5, 1932, in Chicago. Jerry attended Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago, where he received a music scholarship, then transferred to Harper High School, where he played varsity basketball and baseball. On weekends, he played drums in a band.

Upon graduation in 1950, he served in the Navy during the Korean War. In 1954 Jerry married his wife of 60 years, moved to Geneva and joined the Illinois State Police.

After serving 30 years with the Illinois State Police, he spent many years promoting the brotherhood and rights of policemen and was elected president of Troopers Lodge 41. He then was elected president of the Illinois State Police Fraternal Order of Police and served as National FPO Trustee for 14 years and a bailiff in Kane County. He was also a member of Moose Lodge 1551, Mt. Morris.

Jerry was an avid fisherman, traveling to Canada yearly since the age of 15, and played basketball, baseball and softball for many years with the Venetian Café team in Geneva. He enjoyed sports, especially the Chicago White Sox. A celebration of Jerry’s life will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 27, at the St. Charles Moose, 2250 West Route 38, St. Charles. ST. CHARLES – Two men who were staying at a St. Charles hotel face felony drug charges following an investigation into illegal drug distribution, according to a news release from the North Central Narcotics Task Force.

Trevor S. Brubaker, 21, is charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, a Class 3 felony; possession of a controlled substance, clonazepam, a Class 4 felony; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class A misdemeanor.

Ryan M. Kitowski, 21, is charged with possession of a controlled substance, heroin, a Class 4 felony; possession of a controlled substance,

staying, the Best Western at 1635 E. Main St. According to the release, agents seized about 50 grams of marijuana, less than 1 gram of heroin, 30 Adderall pills, 15 clonazepam pills and miscellaneous drug paraphernalia.

The men were taken to the Kane County jail.

Brubaker’s bail was set at $25,000 with 10 percent to apply, and Kitowski’s was set at $50,000 with 10 percent to apply, the release states.

Online records for the Kane County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday showed Kitowski remained in custody, while Brubaker was not.

Marx said the incentive could be changed. Options include awarding the $600 to those who meet their goal, or splitting the incentive so they get half just for participating and the rest if they meet their goals.

If large claims are reduced by 10 percent, Global Benefits Group estimates shortterm savings could amount to $130,000 in savings.

That and other strategies – such as encouraging mail-order for maintenance medications; establishing rules about covering spouses who are employed elsewhere and are offered benefits; and using medical advocacy programs and transparency tools – have a potential cost impact of $847,643.

“All these changes are going to cause some change for employees,” Marx said.

The county is self-insured and has a third-party administrator, Blue Cross Blue Shield. According to Global Benefits Group, administration fees for BCBS totaled about $300,000 for the first six months of 2014.

“No wonder our health insurance costs so much,” said board member Mike Kenyon, R-South Elgin.

No action was taken on the suggestions presented.

GENEVA – With health insurance costing Kane County about $12 million – or about 20 percent of the property tax levy – county leaders are looking for ways to cut that spending.

“We need to innovate as best this committee can,” County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said Wednesday during a Human Services Committee meeting.

Representatives of Libertyville-based employee benefits consulting firm Global Benefits Group presented the committee with strategies that have the potential to save the county hundreds of thousands of dollars.

But, Global president Laurence Marx said, there must be some engagement and accountability from the employees.

Paid claims, for example, represent 87 percent of the annual medical benefit cost.

According to Global Benefits Group, of the $8.3 million PPO medical claims in 2013, about $3.3 million came from large claimants, and $1.6 million came from pharmacy claims.

Pointing to a list of the top 15 claims, Marx said at least half stemmed from controllable or manageable diseases, such as diabetes.

These large claims exist despite a 97.8 percent participation rate in a health screening program for which a $600 annual incentive is offered, Marx said. About twothirds of participants did not share their results with their doctor, he said, and many ignored the goal to improve, re-

What better way to experience the beauty, tranquility and wonder of this diverse natural habitat than to rent a canoe or pedal boat from St. Charles Park District staff at River View Miniature Golf?

With eight pedal boats and two canoes available for rental every day, there’s more than enough fun to go around. Boaters can rent either type of craft for an hour for $15 or make reservations for multiple hours, with a $5 discount offered on “Rent-aBoat” Wednesdays.

“It’s one of the most popular activities,” said Meg Jourden-Messerich, assistant superintendent of recreation. “People visit the park and River View Miniature Golf just to rent one of the boats.”

And why not? For fam-

ilies, couples or a group of friends, it’s a fun, relaxing way to spend quality time on the water.

Pedal boats are easy to maneuver, but being people-powered, they also provide a great physical workout. Canoes can provide a slower, more serene way of getting to know the river’s natural areas as boaters glide along at nearly duckeye level. And for anyone thinking about purchasing a canoe for personal use, it’s a great way to test the waters, so to speak.

“It’s a nice way to explore how canoes work and get to know the craft,” Jourden-Messerich, said.

Whether one is a newbie pedaler or old rowing hand, safety comes first when renting one of these pleasure craft. Children, ages 15 and younger, must be accompanied by an adult. All guests are provided a life jacket, and park district staff make sure it is fitted properly, according to Jourden-Messerich. A staff member will

assist boaters in entering and exiting the boats and review safety rules and regulations. Once out on the river, staff monitor boaters’ activities and encourage craft to stay within a predetermined course visible from the miniature golf course riverfront.

Unique within the TriCity area, St. Charles is the only park district to offer pleasure water craft rental. “We are so fortunate to have this serene and beautiful natural resource running through the park,” Jourden-Messerich said. “It’s just a nice, peaceful way to spend time out on the river and create some wonderful memories.”

Canoes and pedal boats are available at the launch at River View Miniature Golf daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. through late August. Rentals are subject to safe river conditions, and a valid driver’s license or state ID is required as a deposit. Boat rentals will not be available on Aug. 1.

Facebook revisited I’ve done it. I’ve gone back on my word. When I wrote that article last November, my thoughts were the truth, but now I’ve changed my mind.

I now have a Facebook page.

I got it a couple weeks before school ended after I realized that I didn’t want to lose touch with my high school friends and acquaintances just because sending “friend” requests isn’t my highest priority.

It may end up being a good, quick way to get in touch with my future roommates, if I ever find out who they are.

(Update: I still haven’t yet.)

And the thing is, I’ve discovered that I don’t need to be updating my status all the time to be a part of the cyber community.

For some reason, I had an image in my mind that everyone on Facebook is constantly “friending” others and updating their profile, but some of my real-life friends have surprised me by how little they post or “like” in reality.

I’ve also turned up all the privacy settings to their highest levels, which is something else I was concerned about.

Now only my “friends” – all of whom I know in real life, for the record – can read what I post or like.

Facebook does have a few perks. My university has a group just for incoming freshmen, and I’ve learned from the questions others have posted – sometimes they ask questions that I didn’t even know I had! I also think my new online persona is just an exten-

While I now have my own account, I still stand by my word; Facebook is not a necessity in my life.

Sure, it’s fun to see pictures from the last few weeks of school and hear from relatives across the country, but I don’t obsess over who exactly is doing what and when every second of the day.

I also don’t regret not making an account sooner; I feel like I made it when and how was best for me.

I do not envision Facebook changing my view on other forms of social media, so don’t expect me to become the queen of tweeting and Snapchatting.

I still have plenty of other exciting things to fill my summer days (though I may post a few of them on my timeline).

Besides, writing this column is hip enough, right?

Although I have extended my community to the Internet, I know that I still have the same number of friends as before.

Now, my loved ones can just show their support in a whole new way, by liking every brilliant thing I post.

Enough with these highway-spending gimmicks BLOOMBERG NEWS For six years, Congress has been plugging holes in the Highway Trust Fund caused by declining gas-tax revenue.

Over the past two decades, the gas tax has been frozen at 18.4 cents a gallon and eroded by inflation; cars have become more fuel-efficient, and their use has leveled off. As a result, the tax can no longer cover the government’s share – about 27 percent – of maintaining the country’s roads and bridges.

One in three major American roads is in poor or mediocre condition, according to the American Society of Civil Engineers, and even more are severely congested.

There are many ways to solve this problem. Raising the gas tax would be the simplest; other options include imposing new user fees on roads and

bridges, creating more public-private partnerships, and adopting congestion pricing.

All of these have merit. Earlier this year, President Barack Obama proposed raising revenue through changes to the corporate tax code. The case for that is weaker, but the main thing was to find the money.

Congress has had years to do it. Instead of providing the needed funds in a stable way, it has adopted temporary patches. Now, with the trust fund about to run out of money, it is kicking the can down the pothole-filled road again by relying on another gimmick – “pension smoothing” – to keep the fund solvent through next spring.

Pension smoothing is a euphemism for letting companies put less money into employees’ retirement funds. In effect, Congress is using future reve-

nue to pay for current spending – but without calling it borrowing, to which it’s opposed. It’s a scam.

The House, by a vote of 36755, passed the pension-smoothing bill Tuesday. It’s a shame that Obama and members of Congress, including those who wanted to raise the gas tax, didn’t find another solution to the funding problem.

If the bill could be stopped, the economic impact would be limited. Work wouldn’t cease on projects already under way; funding for those is guaranteed. Some states might be forced to delay future projects, but this would help push unions and governors to increase the pressure on Congress to find a better answer. Without strong political pressure, Congress will keep the gimmicks coming – and that needs to stop.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

About 4 p.m., an alert citizen in the 400 block of Prospect Avenue reported hearing noise in her backyard and saw Vega hail a cab that happened to be in the area, the release states. The cab driver, who previously received an alert regarding Vega, intentionally stalled him long enough for officers to arrive and take Vega into custody, states the release.

In an effort to retrieve Vega, the Elgin Police Department had posted alerts on social media after 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The alerts advised that people should call 911 if they see him, and they warned, “DO NOT approach.” That post had been shared 2,830 times as of 4:40 p.m. Wednesday.

In a video, Elgin police Chief Jeff Swoboda credited “community input” and “all of you on social media.”

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office has authorized one count of escape, a Class 2 felony, and Vega will appear during Kane County bond call at 150 Dexter Court in Elgin on Thursday morning. The Elgin Police Department thanked the citizens of Elgin, along with the numerous law enforcement agencies that were involved in the incident, for their efforts and cooperation.

ST. CHARLES – The police officers who responded to the drowning at a St. Charles country club last month described in a St. Charles Police Department report the “chaotic” scene as bystanders screamed for help while others worked to resuscitate the 4-year-old boy.

Witnesses reportedly told police that on June 14 the boy – Paulino F. Delle Grazie of St. Charles Township – had been playing in the shallow end of the pool at Royal Fox Country Club. He was seen wearing a snorkel mask and a life jacket, police said in a report the Kane County Chronicle recently obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.

The boy, however, apparently took off the life jacket, as a lifeguard reported seeing him without it at one point and heard someone yelling at him to put it back on, police reported.

At about 3 p.m., police said, a child alerted others that someone – later identified as Paulino – was at the bottom of the pool near the yellow slide that empties into a depth of more than 5 feet.

A lifeguard responded while another called 911, police reported, and the boy’s mother, who had been sitting

on the opposite end of the pool, ran over.

Paulino, who was found face down, was pulled from the water wearing the snorkel mask but not the vest, police reported. Police said the lifeguard who saw Paulino go down the slide estimated he was under water for 30 to 60 seconds.

Lifesaving efforts attempted by staff lifeguards were hindered by others trying to help, police said.

“People would not move back to allow [country club] staff to do their job despite several requests by the lifeguard,” police reported.

“Family and friends of Paulino had gathered around.”

By the time police arrived, a doctor was performing chest compressions on the boy, and a lifeguard was helping in giving breaths and turning him on his side as he vomited, police said.

The country club, 4405 Royal and Ancient Drive, does not have a defibrillator on site, police reported.

Medics took Paulino to Delnor Hospital in Geneva, where he was pronounced dead at 4:11 p.m. A preliminary autopsy showed the boy died from drowning, Kane County Coroner Rob Russell has said.

Family reportedly told police the boy did not know how to swim.

That year, 4,000 people were in attendance by 10 a.m., and the college also partnered with the Northern Illinois Food Bank to supply families with about 3,000 bags of nonperishable food.

Wells has lived in Geneva for 25 years

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com atavia resident Stacy Chambers started reading her short story, “A Very Small Thing,” slowly but deliberately as the other members of the St. Charles Writers Group perked up their ears.

“It was a very small bird. The small beak was gentle and long,” Chambers said as she read her short story to the group, trying not to notice as fellow member Randy Martin aimed a video camera at her during a recent session of the St. Charles Writers Group.

Martin is making a documentary that takes a glimpse inside the St. Charles Writers Group and other writers groups in the area. Even though the moment represented the first time Chambers had read any of her work in public, she was trying not to be nervous.

“Hopefully, I didn’t stumble too much,” Chambers said.

For the last two years, Martin, of DeKalb, and his wife, Danute Dockuviene, have been filming the activities of the group, which include live readings and the members critiquing each other’s work. Martin believes his being a writer gives him good insight into the subject matter.

“It gives me a very good perspective, because I am a member of the group and get the same criticisms that I am watching other people get and that is what I am looking for, to see how they feel,” Martin said. “So, I think it does offer me an unusual perspective.”

ST. CHARLES – Chinese restaurants and take-out joints are a staple in the American dining scene, and – often – with popularity comes ubiquity.

With so many options, it’s difficult to hone in on the places that are doing it better than everyone else.

Liu Brothers Asian Bistro off of Route 64 in St. Charles is doing it slightly different, and it’s good – oh, so good.

Liu Brothers serves modern Chinese fare in a casual setting. Having only recently opened in February, Liu Brothers’ friendly atmosphere is heightened by the dining room’s clean lines and minimalistic interior, which includes white linen-dressed tables topped with roses. And the prices are very reasonable.

Entrées range in price from $7.95 to $14.95. (The more expensive dishes generally have seafood.)

In addition to popular Chinese food menu items, such as Sesame Chicken or Beef and Broccoli, Liu Brothers has introduced a variety of seafood dishes and noodle soups to its menu. The bistro also is a B.Y.O.B. establishment that doesn’t charge a service fee to pop a beer bottle cap or uncork wine.

My dining companion and I visited the bistro on a recent Friday for lunch and were greeted by an owner, who doubled as the host and server.

Throughout our experience at Liu Brothers, the owner chatted with customers, shared stories about the restaurant and made sure to inform diners about each dish and the freshness of ingredients used.

He handled everyone with care and showed exceptionally high standards for what came out of the kitchen and how the food was presented.

Seated in a cozy corner near a large window, we ordered the Fried Pan Pot Stickers ($4.95) that came with six pork and vegetable dumplings, the Crab Rangoons ($4.95 for six pieces) and the Seafood and Sizzling Rice Soup ($6.95) to start.

Upon the soup’s arrival, the owner provided a bit of novelty to the meal by slowly sprinkling in a healthy amount of crunchy white rice, which sizzled loudly on impact with the broth.

The gargantuan soup bowl provided a healthy portion and could have been lunch on its own. Scallops, crab, jumbo shrimp, mussels and vegetables came in a homemade broth. Some of the other soups, made with wheat noodles, include the BBQ Pork and Noodle – slow-roasted pork, vegetables, sweet corn and boiled egg – Chicken Noodle and Beef Noodle, to name a few.

The delicate Crab Rangoons came served with a delectable strawberry glaze that the owner said was made from scratch using fresh strawberries.

My dining companion opted for the Sesame Chicken lunch special ($6.95), which comes with steamed rice and a choice of fried egg roll or crab rangoon.

“This is the best sesame chicken, I’ve ever had,” he uttered between bites.

I had similar sentiments about the Honey Walnut Shrimp ($13.95), which the owner mentioned his mother had ordered the last 11 times she visited the restaurant.

Sweet like the Sesame Chicken, the jumbo shrimp had a hint of crunchiness underneath a creamy layer of coconut sauce. Walnuts soaked in honey dotted the dish, providing an extra flavor component and texture.

Though not on the menu, Liu Brothers dessert, which changes often, sounded outstanding, and with the madefrom-scratch, fresh-forward food coming out of that kitchen, I’m sure any dessert tastes as good as they sound.

In St. Charles’ competitive dining scene, Liu Brothers Asian Bistro provides a bit of familiarity with Chinese cooking, but does it in a way that is fresh and new. With ubiquity, when something is done well, it tends to stand tall among the many.

Dixon took more than 15,000 photographs during his time in the Peace Corps until an abrupt evacuation from the war-torn country in late February. The photographs

offer a look into the lives of the Ukrainian people, their folk architecture and their festivals.

Traveling extensively throughout the country from Kyiv to Crimea, Dixon was able to capture the unique culture and hospitality of Ukraine.

He also will tell his story through a presentation at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. 6th Ave., St Charles. The program is free and open to the public.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Recreational rounds resumed at Pottawatomie Golf Course Wednesday morning shortly after the last of 23 players boomed their opening tee shots to begin the St. Charles Junior Tournament.

Among the sights and sounds that immediately followed were the hum of the course’s golf carts, which surely enticed incoming St. Charles East freshman Grace Westerhoff.

Westerhoff admits golf’s allure at first amounted simply to driving without a club.

One wayward shot from her dad later, she experienced a disappointing taste.

“I kind of went two feet, you know. Rebel,” Westerhoff said. “But I don’t play to drive the golf cart anymore.”

Westerhoff joined much of the field in praising golf’s risk-reward nature after nine holes on a picturesque morning. It wasn’t for them to say why a few more contemporaries didn’t register to compete. Enjoying their surroundings was fulfilling on its own.

“If anyone was looking to play golf, you should try it,” St. Charles North sophomore Marisa Kuchta said, “because it is actually really fun, and it’s fun to be out there.”

If his score is any indication, East senior Colin Johnson enjoyed himself most, carding a 1-under par 34 to take a seven-stroke lead into today’s final round of the Boys 16 and 17 competition.

That mark is five strokes better than Johnson’s opening round in 2013, when he stumbled on the second day and fell short of the title. His

edge against Daniel Haugen and Luke Spencer, who had separate 41s, contrasts with Connor King’s advantage in Boys 14 and 15 play.

An incoming freshman and the younger brother of Saints senior Gary King, who is playing in an IJGA event this week, Connor King’s 44 is one stroke clear of Charlie Downing among a crowded pack.

“I just hope I can pull out the win tomorrow,” King said.

“I was hitting my drives today, hitting some fairways. It was good.”

Friend and classmate Jason Kuta is among those on King’s heels, hoping to capitalize on his familarity with a course that also will host East tryouts next month.

“Just this year, I started really getting into golf. And then I got the summer pass here, you know, so I’ve just been coming all the time,”

Kuta said.

Girls competition was consolidated into one foursome after Westerhoff was the only athlete to register in the 11-14 group.

She joined Kuchta as well as defending overall medalist Gianna Furrie, a North sophomore who leads the field with a 44, three strokes ahead of Saints sophomore Kacie Gaffney.

Gaffney navigated through a disastrous nine on No. 3 to remain in contention for another duel against Furrie.

Still, she’s just as excited about another day of playing and getting acquainted with Westerhoff and Kuchta.

Westerhoff is a soon-to-be teammate. Kuchta is someone Gaffney had no experience with before this week.

Batavia nips St. Charles E., North hurt by contested call

Crystal Lake South 3, St. Charles North 2 (8 inn.): Just when it seemed St. Charles North was ready to complete a late come-from-behind victory against Crystal Lake South, one controversial play changed the complexion of the game.

With a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh, North had the bases loaded with only one out and Kyle Khoury at the plate.

Khoury skied a popup just outside the infield dirt behind second base. With the Crystal Lake South infield on the grass, two infielders unsteadily retreated and collided into each other, allowing the ball to drop to the ground.

With all of North’s runners tagging near their respective bases, the second baseman fired the ball to home plate, beating the runner for an out at the plate. After the play at the plate, the head umpire called the infield fly rule – making Khoury out – and the inning was over.

North (21-2) would end up losing the regional semifinal, 3-2, in eight innings.

“I completely disagree with the call,” North coach Todd Genke said. “The infield fly rule is supposed to be a routine ball in the infield. There was nothing routine about that play.”

North gave up two runs in the fourth inning after a throwing error on a stolen base attempt directly led to a run. Crystal Lake South returned the favor in the bottom of the sixth when a pair of errors allowed North runners to score and tie the game up.

In the top of the eighth, North pitcher Cory Wright attempted to field a slow roller back to the mound. The southpaw moved to his left and tried to backhand the grounder, but he bobbled it twice and then threw the ball away, allowing the runner to advance to second on the error. After inducing a groundout, Wright gave up a single to left field that ended up scoring the game-winning run.

Cougars doubled up in series opener against Lugnuts KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE LANSING, Mich. – For the first time in the second half of the 2014 season, the Cougars lost their second game in a row.

Kane County fell to the Lansing Lugnuts, 8-4, at Cooley Law School Stadium Wednesday. The Cougars (17-8

second half, 62-33 overall) trailed by eight runs after six innings and were unable to come back against the Lugnuts (13-12, 45-49).

The Cougars struggled against Lansing starter Shane Dawson (3-5) all night as the Lugnuts lefty tossed six shutout innings, allowing just one run and striking out four batters.

Each of the Cougars’ seven hits on the night were singles. Ben Carhart, Cael Brockmeyer, Carlos Penalver and Shawon Dunston Jr. drove in runs for Kane County.

ST. CHARLES – The Batavia baseball team overcame four errors and being held hitless for four straight innings to top St. Charles East, 2-1, in the summer St. Charles East Regional semifinal.

Batavia’s Nick Rogalski went the distance on the mound, scattering four hits and the one unearned run. Rogalski survived some shaky defense behind him, as the Bulldogs committed four errors in the contest.

“We’ve been working on this slider/cutter thing the past two weeks and it finally clicked today,” Rogalski said.

“It was my go-to pitch today.”

Batavia advances to face Crystal Lake South in today’s regional championship game.

East struck early, as leadoff hitter Reid Olson reached on an error to open the game and eventually came around to score on an Anthony Adduci RBI groundout.

Austin Regelbrugge was equally dominant for East. Regelbrugge was perfect through four innings of work, but was roughed up in the fifth and sixth innings. Batavia’s Mitch Boyer broke up the perfect game on the first pitch of the fifth inning and scored when Regelbrugge couldn’t handle a slow grounder going to his right.

“I thought we had a tough time defending from home plate to the pitcher’s mound,” St. Charles East coach Len Asquini said. “That was the opportunity they needed, and they got those runs in.”

Batavia tacked on another run in the fifth but couldn’t cash in with the bases loaded in the sixth as Regelbrugge struck out Matt Musielak and forced a groundout from Eric Huizinga to end the threat.

In the bottom half of the fifth, Olson tripled to right-center with one out.

With Jake Asquini at the plate, there was some confusion as Olson took off for the plate as if a suicide squeeze bunt was on, but Asquini swung and missed. Olson was eventually tagged out in the run-down. Adding insult to injury for East was Asquini singling up the middle two pitches later.

“It was a miscommunication,” coach Asquini said. “I have to take part of the blame on that. When I saw he didn’t acknowledge the signal, I should have banged it, called time and reset.”

Batavia coach Matt Holm said he wasn’t surprised with the close, low-scoring affair.

“If you put together Batavia and St. Charles East, that’s the way these games go,” Holm said. “They’re a great program and well-coached.

We like to play those tight games and see who blinks.”

Marmion product Milroy advancing

By THOMAS DELVES editorial@kcchronicle.com Matt Milroy knows he has a unique opportunity. Not every 23 year old has a chance to travel the country to chase his dreams of becoming a professional baseball player.

“It’s a dream that every little 8 year old wants to pursue and I have the opportunity to do so,” Milroy said. “I have wanted to do this since I was a little kid and I have a chance to make it a reality.”

The Batavia native was the Miami Marlins’ 11th round pick in the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft. After being a standout at both Marmion Academy and at the University of Illinois, Milroy took the opportunity he had always dreamed would come his way.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound righty has not reached his end goal of the big leagues just yet, but a recent promotion and All-Star appearance in the South Atlantic League sure looks like he is headed in the right direction.

“It’s just the next steppingstone to get to the big leagues,” Milroy said of his promotion to Advanced-A Jupiter earlier this summer.

“I didn’t look at it as an awesome moment, just kind of the next step.”

Milroy started his minor league career in Jamestown, New York with the Short-A Jamestown Jammers in the New York-Pennsylvania League. After nine appearances with the club, going 2-3 with a 4.11 ERA, Milroy ran into trouble with the MLB drug testing policy.

Milroy tested positive for Methylhexeanamine, an ingredient in his pre-work out drink. He said he was unaware it was illegal but was suspended for 50 games.

“I kept my head up [during the suspension],” Milroy said, “It was nice to see the Marlins stuck with me during my suspension.”

He returned with the Class-A Greensboro Grasshoppers and finished last season with something to prove.

“I did have something to prove,” Milroy said. “I kept my head up through the whole thing. I had a great end to last year’s season. I wanted to prove I was the same pitcher or even better.”

Milroy started the 2014 season with the Grasshoppers and put up strong numbers.

In 14 games and 63 innings, he struck out 87 batters while only walking 23 and posted a 2.56 ERA. That earned him a spot on the All-Star team as well as a promotion to the Advanced-A Jupiter Hammerheads, in Jupiter, Florida.

Since moving to the next level of minor league ball, Milroy has noticed the difference and is 0-3 with an 8.80 ERA in 15 1/3 innings.

“It’s better competition, a little bit tighter zone,” Milroy said, “Got to get hitters out in the zone. You can’t strike everyone out …”

Milroy knows the road ahead is long, but has insight to anyone who wonders what the minor league life is like.

“Just watch the movie ‘Bull Durham,’ ” he said. “It’s not the glamourous life of the big leagues.”

The crack of the bat and the snap of the ball have beckoned Americans for decades to the attraction of the ballpark. There’s something in the game that continues to draw a passion throughout the years, a bug that once it bites is hard to shake.

This passion is embodied in former Major League Baseball player Lee “Buzz” Capra, who at 66 years old continues to cherish the game. After seven years of being a major leaguer and more than 20 years of coaching at the professional level, both with the Mets and the Phillies, Capra now instructs at St. Charles’ Elite Sports Training Center.

The Elite Sports Training Center offers an indoor training space for young athletes.

With indoor batting cages, infield practice tunnels and private and semiprivate lessons for baseball, softball, golf and football, players are drawn to the facility.

Capra developed his love for the game at an early age, growing up in Chicago.

“Back in the ‘50s that’s all we did, we played baseball,” Capra said. “There wasn’t a lot of video games, computer games, so we went out and played baseball. That was my passion.”

Throughout his youth, Capra continued to fuel his intrinsic passion for the game into a dream of pursuing the sport professionally.

“I knew I wanted to be a professional baseball player

the Braves in 1974, Capra led the league among starting pitchers with a 2.28 ERA. He started 27 games in the 1974 season and had 137 strikeouts.

The year would be Capra’s best season. For his seven-year career, he went 31-37 with a 3.87 ERA. “I was thinking I got to the Major Leagues, which is the highest you can get, and then being selected as one of the top of the top,” Capra said, “It was the epitome of what you want to accomplish.”

From a Chicago schoolboy receiving laughs at his dreams of pursuing professional baseball to becoming an All-Star, Capra now uses the lessons he learned from his climb up the baseball ladder as he coaches young players.

Previously coaching at Grand Slam USA in Arlington Heights and later at Fox Valley Sports Academy, Capra joined The Elite Sports Training Center around two years ago through his connections with Fox Valley Sports Academy.

With years of coaching experience under his belt, Capra encourages his players, “Don’t let anyone talk you out of what your dream is, just keep trying as long as you can,” he said.

Capra now lives in Hoffman Estates after residing in multiple places all around the country.

“You can take the boy out of Chicago, but not the Chicago out of the boy,” Capra said.

Overview: General manager Phil Emery said after the draft that the only Bears linebacker who has been told he’s a starter is seven-time Pro Bowler Lance Briggs. The offseason program did little to change that sentiment, and the Bears will arrive in Bourbonnais with plenty to sort out in the second level of their defense.

Briggs, 33, was limited to nine starts in 2013 because of a fractured shoulder, but the stalwart is healthy again and ready to man his familiar “Will” post. D.J. Williams,

31, is the favorite to start in the middle. But he made only four starts in his first season in Chicago before tearing his pectoral muscle, and started 16 games only twice during nine seasons with the Broncos.

Jon Bostic returns for his second season after filling in for Williams in the middle as a rookie. He’ll compete on the strong side with former first-round defensive end Shea McClellin, whose career the Bears are attempting to revive through a switch to linebacker.

Veteran special-teamer Jordan Senn, undrafted rookies Christian Jones, DeDe Lattimore and Conor O’Neill and holdovers Jerry Franklin and Khaseem Greene round out the linebacker corps.

Position battles: Although coach Marc Trestman referred to him as their “lead dog,” Williams spent some time on the sideline this offseason.

He worked primarily with

the first-stringers in the base defense, but was removed in favor of Bostic in the nickel package. Williams’ experience, and the fact that he held up well in limited snaps last season, are pluses.

Yet the Bears appear to be looking for more youth and explosiveness on passing downs.

The feature attraction camp battle among linebackers will be McClellin vs. Bostic at “Sam.” It’s a dirty-work position that requires players taking on extra blockers, and Bourbonnais will be a golden opportunity for them to not only show what kinds of students they are, but their ability to provide the physicality and toughness the Bears have spent all offseason focused on.

Contract situations: The one that stands out is Briggs.

He enters the final year of a three-year, $17.5 million pact, one that pays him $6.5

Candor creates headache for St. Louis’ Wainwright

Once in a while, honesty isn’t the best policy. Silence is.

Or as a billion parents have told kids, “Think twice before you speak.”

Also, as a billion more parents have said, only half joking, “No good deed goes unpunished.”

Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright thought only once, then spoke. It’s highly likely he told the simple truth when he said he’d given Derek Jeter “a couple pipe shots” to help him get a hit in Tuesday night’s All-Star Game, the last of the Yankee superstar’s career. That honesty was a bad idea.

His intentions were quite nice, and slightly inside the lines of baseball tradition although not a policy I’d endorse. Denny McLain once laid one down the middle to help Mickey Mantle hit a late-career homer. But then McLain also wrote me a long

letter from prison, so maybe he’s not the model to cite.

Wainwright made his comments to pool reporters shortly after leaving the game. I checked with one of those reporters for accuracy, context and tone.

“I was gonna give him a couple pipe shots,” Wainwright said, verbatim. “He deserved it. I didn’t know he was gonna hit a double or I might’ve changed my mind.”

Context: Wainswright is not just a spectacular pitcher but an elite competitor and known for being very honest, too – sometimes (like Davey Johnson) to the point where friends want to yell, “Stop!”

In baseball, “pipe shot” means down the pipe. “He deserved it” either means Wainwright wanted to help Jeter get a hit or at least give him a manageable pitch, not his 18-inch-break curveball.

ion. Mine is that Wainwright threw two of his normal fastballs – the first 91 m.p.h. and the one Jeter hit at 90. In that inning, he threw four pitches at 92 and one at 93. So he sure didn’t take off much to Derek.

But I think he threw pitches where Jeter had a good chance to hit them.

When Mike Trout tripled and Miguel Cabrera homered, Wainwright had suddenly given up three runs in the first inning – the margin of defeat in a 5-3 All-Star Game that cost the National League pennant winner, which could be Wainwright’s Cardinals, home field advantage in the World Series.

Oh, boy. Every other “give him a fat one” pitch in baseball lore has been in a meaningless situation. Not Wainwright’s “pipe shot.” In the past five Series, the team with home field edge has won every

time.

There’s this thing called social media. Universal insight in 140 characters. Those with better character than mine would, no doubt, never enter such a medium. (Seriously.)

But I quickly joined the Twitter-sphere meltdown with my little 140: “Wainwright says he grooved a couple to Jeter.

Maybe ‘bush’ to do it. But worse to SAY you did it. Ruins moment you conspired to create. Dope.”

There’s the world of tweets and sound-bites. And then there is reality. In the actual world, Wainwright feels terrible. “Adam came up to me after the game,” said NL manager Mike Matheny, who is also his Cards manager. “It bothered him immensely, to say the least.”

Wainwright was the last player out of the National League locker room, trying to spin, unwind and re-spin his

explanation that he had just been joking with those reporters, or exercising his off-center sense of humor – or something – oh, lord, let me think of something that doesn’t sound this implausible.

“Listen, I totally created something here that I did not want to create. . . What was relayed to me was that. . .people everywhere were really upset about me throwing the game and giving up hits on purpose,” said Wainwright.

“I was trying to get him out. . .I’m definitely not trying to give up a hit. . .It’s the truth and that’s all I can say. . .When I said ‘down the pipe,’ I should have said I tried to execute a strike. I didn’t say that, so I’m probably going to take some heat.”

To his credit, Wainwright even added that he didn’t blame those who’d taken his quotes the way they did. He could see how they might.

‘Boyhood’: Experimental film at its best

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post In the movie “Boyhood,” we watch as a kid named Mason (Ellar Coltrane) grows up from a little boy into a nearly grown young man, living with his mom and sister in a series of Texas towns, solidifying his relationship with an unsteady father, struggling through schools and step-parents and girlfriends and himself, until, in the film’s final scenes, he starts college.

Audiences might think they’ve seen this kind of coming-of-age story before.

But they’ve never seen a film like “Boyhood,” which in the hands of writer-director Richard Linklater turns from classic cinematic portraiture into something epic, transcendent and monumental.

Filmed for a few days every year over 12 years, “Boyhood” breaks open a brand new genre: a fictional drama contoured and shaped by reality; a lightly scripted ensemble piece executed by both professional and non-professional actors; an experiment in time, narrative and cinematic practice that utterly transforms the boundaries of what film can look like and feel like and achieve.

Perhaps the most amazing thing about “Boyhood” is that it draws no attention to its own lofty ambitions. Working in his signature style of observational understatement, Linklater simply allows viewers to eavesdrop and watch, unnoticed, as Mason and his family go about their daily business. But within that simple premise, Linklater discovers multiple emotions and meanings, the film equivalent of a world in a drop of water.

When “Boyhood” opens, 6-year-old Mason – dreamy, easily distracted, watchfully quiet – is being harangued by his mom, Olivia (played by Patricia Arquette), about his behavior in school, while his bossy older sister, Samantha (Lorelei Linklater, the filmmaker’s daughter), annoys him by singing Britney Spears over and over. When Mason Sr. (Ethan Hawke) shows up from working in Alaska, he comes bearing gifts and the loosey-goosey aura of the circus coming to town. But as “Boyhood” progresses, Dad begins to embrace fatherhood more seriously. One of the film’s most touching and funny scenes occurs in a bowling alley, where the hapless father tries to engage Mason in a just-buds chat about the facts of life (“We can do this!”).

Indeed, much of “Boyhood” has to do with how Mason becomes a man – under the tutelage of his own childish but earnest father, by watching the problematic men his mom becomes involved with, and even within the context of the sexist, epithet-laden rhetoric of his peers. By the

Seamlessly constructed by Linklater and his longtime editor, Sandra Adair, “Boyhood” unfolds with the flowing, unforced rhythms of a river, or real life.

The film moves with such fluid, spontaneous ease that it takes a while to realize how overwhelming an enterprise it really is. Elaborating on the familiar time-lapse tropes of Michael Apted’s “7 Up” documentary series and countless YouTube videos, Linklater has refined that rhetoric to create not just a stunt, but also a bona fide piece of cinema that works both as art and mesmerizing entertainment.

Coltrane, a non-professional from Linklater’s adopted hometown of Austin, is the clear star of “Boyhood,” but Hawke and Arquette’s performances are among the finest in both of their careers: In many ways, the movie is as much about their characters’ changing self-conceptions and complicated relationship as it is about Mason’s own blink-and-you’ll-miss-it youth.

Because it was filmed in real time, “Boyhood” organically reflects the material culture and political touchstones of the ’90s and early 2000s – the Iraq War, the Obama-McCain campaign of 2008, Harry Potter. Over time, the music changes from Spears and Weezer to Cee Lo Green and Daft Punk, becoming a vividly compressed time capsule of social history, tastes and pop signifiers. But mostly,

“Boyhood” is about someone finding himself – or, perhaps more accurately, a self finding him. Linklater took a chance on casting Coltrane as a 5-year-old, there being no guarantee that he would be as cute or charismatic as an awkward college freshman. Luckily, he’s watchable at every age, encountering milestones big and small with watchful, reflective intensity.

Some of those milestones are obvious, such as the 15th birthday when Mason receives a Bible, a blue suit and a 20-gauge shotgun from his family. But most are small – those fleeting, quotidian interludes that no filmmaker other than Linklater would deem worth noticing, let alone valorizing as worthy of narrative attention. Like his fellow Austinite Terrence Malick, Linklater is interested in philosophical questions about time and family and identity and consciousness.

But unlike Malick’s similarly themed “Tree of Life,” “Boyhood” is free of fussy auteurist gestures and self-conscious grandiosity.

What makes Linklater great is that he possesses the modesty and confidence to simply observe banal, otherwise forgettable non-events, then invest them with scale and sweep and deep significance. As a film that dares to honor small moments and the life they add up to, “Boyhood” isn’t just a masterpiece. It’s a miracle.

• “Boyhood” received four out of four stars. The film is rated R and contains profanity, including sexual references, and teen drug and alcohol use. It runs 166 minutes.

Pacemaker is standard treatment for damaged sinus node Dear Doctor K: My doctor says I have “sick sinus syndrome.”

What is it?

Dear Reader: Your question reminded me of something that happened many years ago. A new patient came to my office. She told me that a colleague of mine had been her doctor, but she had stopped seeing him because “he didn’t know what he was talking about.”

When I asked her to explain, she said that she had been weak and had almost fainted several times. At other times, her heart suddenly seemed to be beating too fast. So she saw her doctor.

“He told me it was a sinus problem. How could my sinuses make me faint, or make my heart beat too fast?” she asked. So I told her what I’m about to tell you.

Sick sinus syndrome has nothing to do with your sinuses – the ones that get congested when you have a cold, or maybe from allergies. It is a heart condition, caused by the malfunctioning of a part of the heart called the “sinus node,” or the “sinoatrial node.” This small area of the heart keeps your heart rhythm normal or regular.

Each time your heart beats, a tiny electrical current triggers the heart muscle to contract.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff The stimulus is sent by the sinus node. This cluster of cells in the upper right portion of your heart acts as your body’s natural pacemaker. (I’ve put an illustration of the sinus node on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

The electrical waves travel through the upper chambers of the heart (the atria). They then pause briefly in the atrioventricular (AV) node in the middle of the heart. The waves continue through specialized electrical connections in the lower heart chambers (the ventricles). This produces a nice rhythmic contraction of the heart muscle.

My colleague Dr. Patrick Ellinor is a cardiologist and arrhythmia specialist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. He explains that sick sinus syndrome can take many forms. The sinus node may fail to send out signals quickly enough, for example. As a result, your heart cannot beat fast enough to supply your body with fresh blood and oxygen. That’s why my patient was feeling weak and

nearly fainting.

Or, a malfunctioning sinus node may shut down completely for five or six seconds. During that time, electrical activity stops and your heartbeat is put on pause. If that happens, you will most likely pass out. In another form of sick sinus syndrome, the heart rate alternates between a pace that is too fast and one that is too slow. That’s what was happening with my patient.

Sick sinus syndrome is more common in people in their 70s and 80s. Most cases result from age-related changes in the heart muscle that disrupt the heart’s electrical system. Certain medications used to treat other heart conditions can also increase risk.

The standard treatment is placement of an artificial pacemaker to regulate the heartbeat electronically. This requires minor surgery. But a pacemaker is a safe and effective option for keeping your heart beating on track.

weak parent response Dr. Wallace: I have never been in any kind of trouble at school, and I get good grades, but my parents seem to think that I’ll get in trouble if I’m not always in their sight. I am not allowed to go anywhere with my friends, not even to the mall on a Saturday afternoon.

I’m beginning to feel like a prisoner in my own home. I’ve never attended any parties, school dances or even a basketball or football game at my school.

I can have a friend over to my house, and that’s the only time I see my friends outside of school, but one or both of my parents must always be home.

Dear Carly: Your mom may feel more comfortable about letting you have a social life if she knows that the functions are chaperoned by competent adults.

You could ask your friend’s mom to call one of your parents to invite you to the get-together.

For example, if your girlfriend wants you to attend a slumber party at her house, have her mom call and extend the invite and explain that the party will be well-supervised. This way, your mom can ask any questions that might ease her mind.

Do you hold up with two stoppers?

We have been looking at declarer’s plan in no-trump when he has only one stopper in the suit led at trick one. But how does his strategy change when he has two stoppers in that suit?

It depends upon the number of opposing high cards declarer has to drive out before running for home. If he will lose the lead only once, he should take the first trick, give the opponents the trick they are due, and claim. However, if he has two losers to drive out, usually it is right to duck (lose) trick one.

In this example deal, West leads the spade four against three no-trump and East puts up his jack. How should South plan the play?

South starts with only five top tricks: two spades and three diamonds. He can get three winners from clubs, so also needs a heart trick. He has to concede tricks to both rounded-suit aces. The rule recommends ducking the first trick.

Let’s assume East returns his second spade. South wins and plays on clubs. East takes his ace, but doesn’t have another spade to lead (and if he did, the suit would be 4-3).

Note that if South takes the first trick and leads a club, East wins and returns his second spade, establishing West’s suit while West still has an entry in the heart ace. Or, if South plays a high heart at trick two, West wins with his ace and East drops the jack, the top of his sequence when he cannot win the trick. Then West should lead his second heart, which would defeat the contract.

Finally, yes, if East, when given the first trick, shifts to his heart jack at trick two, South has to guess to play low, which is not clear-cut.

Green house tour limited to two days

By JERRY KUYPER editorial@kcchronicle.com The 2014 GreenBuilt Home Tour is almost here.

Like last year, the tour will last all of two days. This year those days are Saturday, July 26, and Sunday, July 27.

Daily hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Like the inaugural 2013 tour, there will be more than a dozen houses open for viewing at scattered sites in Chicago and its suburbs.

An all-access pass for unlimited visits both Saturday and Sunday costs $25.

Single house visits cost $10.

Attendees younger than 18 years old will be admitted for free. Proceeds will support the U.S. Green Building Council - Chicago chapter, the tour’s sponsor.

This year, there are 15 houses on the tour, which compares well with last year’s 16.

The 15 houses at scattered sites present a problem. It is almost impossible to visit all the tour entries in two days, as was the complaint last year, according to USGB - Illinois chapter executive director Brian Imus.

“Typically the people visit two or three homes but not all of them,

counties (mostly west and northwest).

Imus said he would like to extend the tour over two weekends, but that is unlikely.

“Some of these homes have people, families, living in them, and it is hard to convince a family or a couple or an owner to vacate their homes two weeks in a row.”

Three of the tour entries are built or under construction by Brandon Weiss, president of Weiss Building & Development of South Elgin.

In downtown Geneva, Weiss is building the first non-toxic passive house in Illinois and the second one in the country. He calls it the Uber Haus, which is at 529 Eklund Ave. He will use the two-story, 2,500-square-foot, five-bedroom house as a sales model when completed later this year or in early 2015.

He emphasized the wisdom of visiting a green-built house under construction.

“If they go to a house under construction, they get to see the true quality of what is being

built, such as the mechanical systems, the longevity performance built into the house.

They see what is behind the walls and how the house is built that is so important. Green

homes can look like whatever you want them to look like as far as design is concerned. It is what’s behind the walls that makes the big difference.”

“We completed it and the couple just moved in [May]. This is a five-bedroom, 3,200-squarefoot two-story with four bedrooms and an attached two-car garage. I have not been granted permission by the owners to reveal the price,” Weiss said.

Weiss said that a green-built house carries a four or five percent premium over a normal structure. The premium is repaid by immense savings in utility bills, he noted. Such a house, he added, also is healthier and easier on the environment.

Weiss will staff his three tour locations.

Our project manager, Patrick Danaher, and our operations manager, Jamie Carr, will be at the River Forest house. Our architect, Tom Bassett-Dilley, will be at one of them. At Serosun Farms we will have some of our field operations people, but the Serosun Farms developer, John DeWald, and his people also will be on site,” Weiss said.

All houses on the tour were third-party verified (or pending verification) to ensure they were built (or being built) to national standards, earning certification through programs such as Energy Star for Homes, LEED for Homes, the National Green Building Standard, DOE Challenge Home, Illinois Green Star and Passive House.

Imus said the tour is unique.

“I know of only one other tour that is like that and it is in New Mexico. There is nothing like this in Illinois. This tour is a great opportunity to connect with green builders and learn about all the efficient and healthy building products out there,” he said.

By NICOLE ANZIA Special To The Washington Post As a professional organizer, I am constantly reminded of what happens when people buy too much stuff without first thinking through what they’re buying.

Initially, they feel good about their purchases, because they got a good deal, they thought the items would simplify their lives or because they just loved something and had to have it.

But within a couple of days, weeks or months, when they realize they have no use for certain items, have nowhere to put them and don’t have the time or energy to get rid of them, the clutter begins to close in. Recognize this scenario? Here are some tips to avoid it: • Never buy something just because it’s on sale. We have been programmed to think that sales are opportunities. If we fail to take advantage of a sale, we have missed out.

Rationally, we know that the money we’re saving is relatively insignificant and yet, the temptation to buy something on sale is alluring. Before you take the plunge, ask yourself whether you need it, whether you will you use

of work it will take to store the item, remember you have it and eventually put it to use, whether you actually need it or not, outweighs any benefit to getting a good deal now.

• Take inventory before you shop.

Do you know what’s in your closet or kitchen cabinets? Most of us think we do, but when we take a closer look, we always find something we’ve forgotten.

If you’re headed out to the store, take five minutes to do a quick inventory.

Make a few notes about what you need so you’re not second-guessing yourself in the store and buying duplicates.

• Measure first. Shop second.

Buying things that you think will fit without knowing if they actually will is a bad idea. Shopping sales, experimenting with new products and occasionally buying something you don’t really need is normal, but constantly buying things you don’t need and then trying to find a use for them is stressful and creates clutter.
