Geneva Park District celebrates Park and Recreation Month

VIEWS NATALIE SEIDEL If you’re feeling cramped and like you don’t get to spend enough time outside, you’re not alone.

Almost three out of 10 U.S. adults do not spend time outside on a daily basis, and of those who do, almost half spend less than 30 minutes in the fresh air, according to a new survey released by the National Recreation and Park Association and conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs.

That’s why this July, the Geneva Park District and NRPA are challenging everyone to get out and visit their community parks during national Park and Recreation Month.

Since 1985, America has celebrated July as the nation’s official Park and Recreation Month. This month-long celebration highlights the vital role local parks and recreation play in conservation, health and wellness, and social equity efforts in communities across the country.

This year’s theme, “Out is In,” is intended to connect more people, adults and children alike, with nature and the outdoors.

Batavia eyes lifting ban on video gambling Some communities that originally banned video gambling now allow it, including North Aurora, Sugar Grove and Elburn.

Batavia Police Chief Gary Schira said there is no evidence that video gambling causes an increase in crime.

“Of the towns that allow video gaming, none have seen an increase in calls for service or crime at these establishments,” Schira told aldermen. “Further, there is no evidence of organized crime in any of these operations.”

zations to have it.

But 7th Ward Alderman Dave Brown said that would cause bar owners to come before the City Council requesting to have video gambling, as well.

“I think if we limit it, we are just kicking the can down the road,” Brown said.

Humvee new tool in county’s emergency management arsenal

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A volunteer effort that involved hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars in donations has provided Kane County with a new emergency response tool.

Don Bryant, director of the Kane County Office of Emergency Management, described the process of obtaining – and then repurposing – the military Humvee for county purposes as a team effort.

“They worked a lot of hours, some long into the night,” he told the Kane County Public Health Com-

mittee on Tuesday.

The Humvee enhances the OEM’s response capabilities, particularly in search and rescue situations, Bryant said.

He said it also is equipped with lights that can be used in rural areas.

Bryant emphasized that no tax dollars were spent on the vehicle, which made its first public appearance at the Campton Hills Safety Fair last month.

Kane County Board member Melisa Taylor, R-Sugar Grove, said the public needs to know about the work put into the vehicle. To see what it used to be compared to what it is now, she said,

“That’s a wow.”

The OEM partnered with the Kane County Sheriff’s Office to obtain the military vehicle through the Law Enforcement Support Office, which transfers excess Department of Defense property to law enforcement agencies across the county, Bryant said.

A retrieval team traveled to the Missouri National Guard Joint Force Headquarters to get the Humvee, he said, and they returned that same day just before midnight.

“It was a tough drive,” Bryant said.

Repurposing the Humvee to suit the OEM’s needs took

about 350 hours, he said. Except for the external paint, he said, everything was done by volunteers.

Companies and agencies donated more than $20,000 in goods and services to the project, he said.

Also Tuesday, Barb Jeffers of the county health department presented the proposed 2015 budget for the health department and Kane County Animal Control.

The health department plans to operate with a nearly $6.3 million budget, up by about $330,000 from 2014. At $931,492, animal control is planning for a budget about $3,200 less than the 2014 budget.

The fair’s 146th annual outing, which begins today and continues through Sunday, will be buzzing with the sounds of numerous carnival rides, food booths, 4-H animals and exhibits, live music, grandstand shows and more.

“I think it’s a good economic value for people to come here and have a great time at the Kane County Fair,” said Larry Breon, County Fair Board president.

The Miller Lite Soundstage will feature live music each day of the fair, including 7th Heaven today and Beatles tribute band American English on Sunday. The soundstage performances are free with general admission.

This year, the FMX Freestyle Motocross stunt show makes its Kane County Fair debut on Thursday as one of the grandstand events, which require an additional admission charge. The fair also is holding three separate championship bull riding shows this year, at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday. Country music performances will immediately follow the evening bull riding shows. Joe Diffie is scheduled to perform at 9:30 p.m. Friday and Drew Baldridge at 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Breon said the fair operations involve the help of up to 150 volunteers, and many of those are for 4-H activities. A few 4-H events already have been held this month at the fairgrounds, including the annual Kane County 4-H Dog Show on June 25, and the 4-H Small Pets Show on July 8. The pet show included various birds, rabbits, turtles and more, said Doris Braddock, 4-H and Youth Development program coordinator at the University of Illinois Kane County Extension office.

The target age group for the game is ages 7 to 14, but older teens get a kick out of the paper steer hats that participants receive, Haas said.

The girls are members of the Kan-Du 4-H Club and between them will show six different types of pigs on Thursday.

The Paneks bought their pigs at an auction in March at 50 pounds each, and by mid-June they had raised them to be 250 pounds.

“It’s a good family project,” Jaide Panek said. “It’s our first show of the season – this is the kickoff.”

Also showing pigs this year at the fair is Cody Pitstick of Maple Park, a member of the Burlington Ag 4-H Club. Like other 4-H members, Pitstick, 18, travels to show his livestock at different events. He was in Henry, Illinois, for the Marshall-Putnam County Fair over the weekend and also will head to Springfield in August for the Illinois State Fair.

ST. CHARLES – A threepart activity that teaches children about bringing animals to market will be available all week at the Kane County Fair.

The Commodity Carnival guides participants through the process of producing and selling livestock, specifically how to grow livestock, sell livestock and win a ribbon.

The activity, which was launched in 2013, will be available for the first time at the Kane County Fair.

A Commodity Carnival display will be set up at the Kane County Buddy Haas Young Farmers Farm Zoo directly north of the Midway for most of the hours that the Midway is open during the fair.

The carnival is a result of a partnership between the CME Group and the National 4-H Council. The group wanted to the public to have a better understanding of ag-

Jack graduated from Blue Island High School before attending Knox College for the military. He entered into service on November 1942 as a navigator bombardier in the Air Force, where he flew 37 missions.

All clothing is free, Alfrey said, but there is a limit of four items per family member with a maximum of 20 items a family. Although no donations are being accepted, Alfrey said volunteers always are needed to

Two drivers were involved in an incident Tuesday morning that resulted in one car being flipped onto its side. A 16-year-old girl from South Elgin pulled out from Bolcum Road onto Burlington Road in Campton Hills in front of a 28-year-old man from St. Charles, Campton Hills Police Chief Dan Hoffman said. The man swerved to avoid a collision and flipped his 2003 Volkswagen Jetta, Hoffman said. There were no injuries, and both parties were wearing seat belts, he said. The girl was issued a citation for failure to yield before turning left, Hoffman said.

ST. CHARLES – The Kane County Division of Transportation is urging drivers to consider avoiding Randall Road, between Dean Street and Route 64, for a two-week period starting Monday.

A project to remove the abandoned Union Pacific railroad crossing on Randall will cause land closures during that period, according to a news release.

According to the release, the removal of the abandoned crossing will start at 9 a.m. Monday and continue through Aug. 1.

One lane of Randall Road in each direction is expected to be closed during the period.

“Please use alternate routes when possible,” the release stated. “Expect delays in traffic flow due to the large amount of vehicles using Randall Road daily. There will be lane closure changes during this work.”

Casey’s Safe Haven comes to the rescue Elburn rescue group helps renovate Tennessee animal shelter this past weekend

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Thanks to volunteers from Casey’s Safe Haven Dog Rescue, dogs at a shelter in Tennessee now have better living conditions.

Twelve volunteers from the nonprofit group drove eight hours over the weekend to renovate an animal shelter in Bolivar, Tennessee.

Casey’s also has been working with the group Hardeman Adoptable Animals Inc. in Tennessee since last year to find homes for the dogs housed there.

Hardeman Adoptable Animals is described as a volunteer-based organization that saves dogs from the Hardeman County Animal Control.

“It is a chance to give them a foster home instead of the alternative of death,” Sch-

weisthal said.

She said she is proud of the success the group has had.

Since 2012, Casey’s has adopted out close to 500 dogs.

To help pay for its expenses, Casey’s Safe Haven will hold Casey’s Safe Haven 5K Wag-A-Thon 2014 at 9 a.m.

Aug. 23 at the Peg Bond Center at the Batavia Riverwalk, North Island Avenue and Houston Street, Batavia.

Registration is $25 a person. Organizers hope to raise $10,000 through the event.

“A lot of dogs that we bring up have major medical needs, which this money will help pay for,” volunteer Lynn Flanagan said.

GENEVA – A performance of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is planned this weekend as part of Geneva’s eighth annual Shakespeare in the Park, according to a city news release.

Seating at Island Park begins at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Summer brings a wealth of opportunities for getting out and experiencing all the region has to offer. While concerts abound and carnivals beckon, some of our favorite summertime options can be found in the area’s parks and galleries, where works of local artists find an audience in public art fairs and shows.

So, it seems like a good time to remind you that, on Waubonsee Community College’s campuses, you can access art all year long.

Our main exhibition space, the Arrowhead Gallery in Dickson Center on our Sugar Grove Campus, annually features nationally and internationally recognized artists in four solo or duo exhibits, a faculty show and at least one student exhibit.

Each spring, the space features student artwork selected by a guest juror for the first tier of the annual Skyway Juried Art Competition. And every eight years, we host the entire Skyway Competition and Exhibition, a two-tiered juried art competition featuring the work of students from eight Chicago area community colleges.

Dickson Center also houses our Window Art Project Space. Able to be viewed from outside the building at any time day or night, this space features sculptures and installation pieces by Chicago-area artists.

Other campus exhibition spaces focus solely on student artwork. Twice each year, we present student exhibitions in the Todd Library and in

Latest Fed minutes are misunderstood BLOOMBERG NEWS The gap between what the Federal Reserve says about monetary policy and what investors think it’s saying would be funny if it weren’t so important. Most of this gap is the listeners’ fault – but not all. The Fed could do a better job of explaining itself.

Here’s the relevant passage from the minutes: “While the current asset purchase program is not on a preset course, participants generally agreed that if the economy evolved as they anticipated, the program would likely be completed later this year. ... If the economy progresses about as the Committee expects, warranting reductions in the pace of purchases at each upcoming meeting, [the] final reduction would occur following the October meeting.”

As binding commitments go, and remembering that the economy rarely evolves as anyone expects, that’s pretty weak. By the way, the minutes also noted that most participants thought the decision about the last installment of quantitative easing had “no substantive macroeconomic consequences” and no bearing on the decision about when to raise interest rates.

This disconnect between plain words and the zeal to unearth their author’s true intent is a problem. If investors get too settled on a particular idea of what will happen and when, then the Fed may feel obliged to validate that forecast, despite its better judgment. It knows that if it chooses not to, this might come as a shock and could have bad results.

What should the Fed say to make it even clearer that it’s running monetary policy not on a schedule but with its eyes on changing conditions in the economy? It tried to do just this when it began including a threshold for unemployment in its announcements in 2012. But that experiment in greater clarity was short-lived because the unemployment figures haven’t behaved as expected. They’re no longer seen as a reliable indicator of economic conditions.

Two things would help. First, the Fed should tell the markets more plainly that its 2 percent inflation target is a target, not a ceiling – and that it will be no more concerned about a temporary overshoot than it has been about the recent undershoot.

Second, it should say more about how it assesses inflation prospects and less about peripheral matters. A good indicator to emphasize is wages. The Fed’s main concern should be to avoid the emergence of an inflationary prices-and-wages spiral. As long as wage inflation is not a concern – and for the moment it isn’t – keeping monetary policy loose makes sense. Giving due weight to those points argues, in fact, for continuing to buy assets beyond October. If conditions in the labor market are any guide, it’s too soon to be even thinking about higher interest rates.

That would be a good message to send. But it’s also important that the Fed should have a message, any message, and deliver it in simple terms, less apt to be misunderstood.

In this, others can help – by not trying so hard to misunderstand.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR AVOIDING KEY ISSUES To the Editor: Democratic Illinois Gov. Quinn and the other progressive, they seem to no longer want to be referred to as Liberals – Democratic leaders are avoiding many important issues that the citizens of Illinois expected them to cast a vote on. There are currently non-binding referendums, which obligate our representatives to do nothing. However, our elected government leaders want the citizens to recommend on issues on the November ballot via these non-binding referendums.

One of the most popular non-binding referendums is the millionaire income tax, which could benefit the schools. The problem is that the referendum has two parts: one, the income tax increase; and the other, to add more funding for

schools based on the number of students in the school district. Chicago would get the most benefit of this referendum.

Raising the minimum wage is another referendum. This referendum only asks should the minimum wage be increased but mentions nothing about who is eligible – will the public sector union members receive an automatic increase with an increase in the minimum wage?

Gov. Quinn recently presented a referendum about birth control requirements for all employers in Illinois. The Supreme Court has decided that requiring all private companies to pay for contraceptives – event if it’s against the owner’s religious beliefs – would be unconstitutional.

There are two issues that the progressive Democrats did not

want the citizens of Illinois to vote on, yes or no. The progressive Democrats, to retain full power, denied Illinois voters the ability on who is responsible for reapportion of the legislative districts. This inaction denies Illinois voters fair representation.

The other item that was avoided is about term limits. It took the GOP controlled Congress, after World War II, to pass term limits on the president. The progressive Democrats do not want to lose their employment with term limits.

These nonbinding referendums will do absolutely nothing for Illinois, except for the progressive Democrats who only want to bring the single-minded voter in November.

STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE Temple works toward promising final season as a Viking

T

he Geneva football team averaged more than 35 points a game in 2013, and receiver Pace Temple was in the middle of much of the chain-moving.

Nothing against last year, but Temple isn’t satisfied with the status quo. He wants more from himself as a senior and from the Vikings, whose season ended at 7-3 and with a first-round Class 7A playoff loss to St. Patrick.

“Obviously last year we did some great things, so teams are going to prepare for that, but I think it’s going to be hard because we have so many different ways we can hurt defenses,” Temple said.

Temple is high on that list.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound multisport standout was part of an impressive 1-2 receiving punch with Kyle Brown, who graduated and has walked on at Pittsburgh. As a junior, Temple caught 37 balls for 799 receiving yards and nine touchdowns while also supplying three interceptions as

a defensive back.

Temple received his first Division I scholarship offer last month from Wyoming.

Others likely will follow – and might have already if Temple had been able to attend some of the college camps to which he’s been invited – but Temple said his recruitment will play out in due time.

“Being a captain for football and just having to be there for [summer] basketball, it was hard to get out [to college camps], but I went out to Penn and am talking to a lot of Ivy League schools, and I think that could definitely be an option, and obviously that education would open doors and set up a future,” Temple said. “But as of now, I’m ready to focus on my senior year and my team and put together a memorable year, which hopefully in return, it opens up some more doors to the programs. That would be great.”

Temple said fielding his first Division I offer was hard to fathom.

“For it to happen was one of those moments, you just

kind of stop,” Temple said. “It was a lot of silence from me when I got that call because I’m just thinking not too long ago I was praying, making wishes to become an athlete in college, and Wyoming stepped up and made that offer, and that’s a day I’ll never forget.”

Temple is best friends with Vikings quarterback Daniel Santacaterina, who committed to Northern Illinois earlier this year. Santacaterina expressed his desire to see Temple follow him to DeKalb, a prospect with which Temple said he’d be open to considering, but for now Temple’s attention is on their final season together as Vikings.

As well as both played as juniors, Temple said the season-ending, 31-23 home loss to St. Patrick in the 7A playoffs provided motivation for an inspired offseason work ethic. He lists more precise route-running and gaining strength to better shed tacklers as summer priorities.

“I still feel we could have won that game,” Temple said.

“I go back and watch the film and it hurts, but I think we’re going to be ready and not looking just to get back to the playoffs but get there and make a huge run, so I’m real excited for this year.”

Geneva’s season begins Aug. 29 at West Aurora, and the Vikings’ preparations continued Tuesday night with a 7-on-7 competition at Schaumburg.

While football is his likely college path, Temple made major strides in basketball as a junior as part of a sectional final-qualifying team.

It’s been an intriguing offseason for the basketball program, which recently added brothers Chandler Fuzak (6-10) and Bennett Fuzak (6-7) as transfers from Wheaton Academy.

The Vikings project to be huge in the paint as Mike Landi, Loudon Vollbrecht and Nate Navigato each are 6-7 returnees.

“Might as well just throw all five of them out at the start of a game for the heck of it,” Temple said. “That’s going to be exciting, too.”

Koehn considered Geneva

fortunate to benefit from Newbill’s stewardship during a boom era for the community.

“He was an AD for a long time and in a period when the school was growing,” Koehn said. “He was instrumental in the creation of the athletic facilities that we have today, the football field, the baseball facilities we have. [Heck], when I was in high school we used to play at the Government Center. We

didn’t even have a baseball field at the high school back then.”

Beyond his contributions in athletics, Newbill was a wonderful friend and family man, said DeMaar, who, along with his wife, occasionally traveled with the Newbills. DeMaar and Newbill also were part of a large golfing circle consisting mainly of retired teachers and coaches who teed it up weekly to keep in touch.

Bill Koehn played baseball under Jim Newbill at Geneva High School, and later became an assistant baseball coach and assistant athletic director under Newbill’s leadership at Geneva.

Koehn never stopped looking up to his mentor.

He had plenty of company. Word of Newbill’s death Friday on his 72nd birthday has reverberated throughout the area.

“He really embodied what we’ve tried to go do at Geneva High School with student-athletes,” said Koehn, who recently retired as Geneva’s boys golf coach. “He was a hell of a teacher and I think he exemplified the tradition of excellence we tried to create at Geneva High School.”

The former social studies teacher logged most of his 35 years coaching baseball and wrestling at Geneva and also spent 10 years as Geneva’s athletic director before stepping down in 1996.

“When he took over Geneva was starting to grow, and he grew the athletic department as enrollment improved, and worked on the girls side of the sports and made them equal to the men,” said Wayne DeMaar, former AD at St. Charles High School. “And I think he’s one of the reasons why Geneva athletics has really, really been very strong in the area, in the conference and in the state.”

Newbill’s legacy is partially tied to his leading role in landing the IHSA Class AA state baseball tournament at

the former Elfstrom Stadium (now Fifth Third Bank Ballpark), a 13-year run that ended when the tournament shifted to Joliet in 2006.

“He worked extremely hard on that,” DeMaar said.

“He was very proud of [bringing it to Geneva] and he even ran it after he retired. I can guarantee you if you talked to any baseball coach while Jim was running that tournament, they wish it was back in Geneva permanently. He really did an outstanding job, having the [opening banquet] on Thursday and really ran a first-class tournament.”

One of the people Newbill recruited to assist with the state tournament weekend was former Oswego baseball coach Dave Elko, an official scorekeeper for the event.

Elko and Newbill squared off as coaching foes during many a Little Seven Conference series.

Elko said Newbill was a rival who commanded his utmost respect, and the two remained in contact after Newbill became AD. In a 2009 interview with the Chronicle, Newbill spoke glowingly about the rapport he enjoyed among the old coaching “fraternity.”

“We were very competitive against each other and we had a lot of respect for each other,” Elko said. “We always were able to [get together] after games, talk about the game, who got the breaks and who didn’t. We always respected each other very much.”

Newbill’s transition from coach to administrator drew rave reviews. Current Geneva AD Jim Kafer said Newbill “has no equal as an event planner and manager.”

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – This time of year, high school baseball coaches are generally willing to accentuate the good plays and chalk up the bad ones as learning experiences.

St. Charles East coach Len Asquini had some of both to analyze Tuesday but the Saints’ 10-2 win against Geneva in the second round of the summer playoffs skewed toward the positive.

For summer baseball, he’ll certainly take it.

“We took advantage of some of their mistakes, they took advantage of a couple of ours,” Asquini said. “If we could have closed that down defensively, it would have been a super-solid game for us. Instead we just got a solid game.

“But our offense came to life and we got some big hits, which was awesome to see.”

One of those came in the bottom of the third as East leadoff hitter Reid Olson opened the scoring with a two-run home run to left field off Vikings right-hander Bryan Callaly. East never relinquished its lead in the Phil Lawler Summer Classic.

“I think he threw me a changeup that was high,” Olson said. “I like the high pitches. He’s a real good pitcher. Earlier in the [summer] I struggled off of him, the first time we played them, and I just kind of left it there. Saw the ball well and put a good swing on it.”

Olson said some of his teammates rib him for not doing enough leg workouts but his power is beginning to blossom this summer.

“I’m normally a base-hit hitter but this summer for some reason, I’ve hit a couple off the fence, and finally got one out today,” Olson said.

With the win, the Saints advance to today’s 5 p.m. St. Charles East Regional semifinal against another Tri-Cities rival, Batavia.

Geneva had a fleeting pe-

riod of momentum when the Vikings wiggled out of a one out, bases loaded jam thanks to some shaky East base running to keep their deficit at 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth.

The Vikings then broke through against East starting pitcher Kyle Cook with two runs in the top of the fifth as East’s defense faltered.

But the Saints swiftly re-asserted control of the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-2 advantage, and East added five runs in the sixth against Vikings reliever Eric O’Loughlin.

“It didn’t balloon,” Asquini said of East’s midgame rocky patch. “We were in jail, we got out without a big, big problem.”

East junior catcher Anthony Adduci continued to be one of the Saints’ most impressive performers this summer, going 3 for 4 with an RBI double while batting cleanup.

Callaly missed the spring season while recovering from an ACL tear so the opportunity to pitch this summer was crucial for a right-hander who Geneva coach Matt Hahn envisions becoming an important cog in his rotation.

“He’s kind of playing a year behind, so he’s trying to play some catch-up,” Hahn said. “He’s only going to be a junior, so he’s got a nice frame to him, nice, big kid.

So we expect big things out of him.”

As Geneva concluded its summer slate, Hahn said there were several encouraging developments, including Nick Porretto emerging at third base, Jack Wassel (3 for 3 Tuesday) solidifying shortstop in the aftermath of Nick Derr’s transfer and Mitchell Merges swinging a hot stick after seeing limited at-bats during the spring.

Hahn also singled out catcher Nate Montgomery for his budding intangibles.

“I think he’s the clear-cut leader of our team getting ready for this spring,” Hahn said. “That was very apparent this summer.”

jbartelson@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – The looming threat of rainy skies contributed to the late-inning drama between the Kaneland and Batavia baseball teams during the second round of the summer state playoffs Tuesday.

With raindrops sprinkling, fans and players alike nervously anticipated the final half-inning, after which Batavia held on for a 5-4 win in the Phil Lawler Summer Classic thanks to solid performances from starting pitcher Evan Acosta and right fielder/relief pitcher Eric Huizinga.

Down a run, Kaneland (20-10-3) was hoping for some late-inning magic, especially with two outs, as it seemed to be the trend for both teams to show their scoring touch when down to their final out.

After catcher Joe Laudont reached with a single, Kaneland couldn’t convert with a man on base with both center fielder Nick Stratman and first baseman Danny Hammermeister popping out to end a potential rally.

“Batavia is a good team.

I don’t feel bad losing to a good team,” Kaneland coach Brian Aversa said. “We were right there. We had opportunities and we couldn’t get it done.”

After a quick first inning for both teams, Batavia (17-6-1) awoke after two groundouts and catcher Matt Musielak’s single. Second baseman Tyler Kledzik then ripped an RBI triple to put the Bulldogs ahead, 1-0.

Center fielder Jimmy Roach followed with a big hit of his own and drove in Kledzik with a double to increase the lead to two.

Batavia continued the scoring spree in the top of the third inning, but not until after two outs again. Huizinga started the rally with a single, and Ben Lynam promptly smacked an RBI double. Acosta,who didn’t bat all spring, helped his own cause by contributing an RBI single of his own, bringing home Lynam to make it ,4-0.

St. Charles East Regional Semifinal – Today St. Charles East vs. Batavia, 5 p.m.

Musielak smoked an RBI double to make it 5-0 and Kledzik legged out a single before Kaneland was able to stop the bleeding thanks to a heads-up play by Laudont, who was able to cut down a potential run at the plate after Steve Limbrunner’s pitch squirted away.

The Knights responded quickly with a three-run third inning after shortstop Joey Panico reached base the hard way, being hit by an Acosta fastball. Second baseman Austin Wheatley followed with a single before Laudont popped out. Stratman put Kaneland on the board thanks to an RBI single while advancing Wheatley to second, which set the table for right fielder Matt Rosko’s two-run double to inch the Knights to within, 5-3.

Kaneland was able to tack on another run in the fifth inning after Stratman hit an RBI groundout, but that’s as close as the Knights got as Huizinga converted the save opportunity.

“I thought we overall played a good game. We just had a couple bad innings with two outs,” Limbrunner

said.

Limbrunner took the loss, going three innings and surrendering seven hits and five runs with one strikeout.

Acosta went five innings for Batavia, scattering seven hits with four strikeouts for the win.

“It gave me some confidence up [On the hill]…it was nice to have. It helped me get through when [Kaneland] started putting runs up on me,” Acosta said.

Bulldogs coach Matt Holm came away impressed with Kaneland relief pitcher Matt O’Sullivan, who stifled the Bulldogs bats, and forced several groundouts to complement his three-strikeout day.

“He did a real nice job,” Holm said. “He didn’t have anything blazing, but had a real nice change of pace which kept us on our front foot.”

Batavia will play at St. Charles East against the host Saints in a regional semifinal at 5 p.m. today. Holm is undecided on his starting pitcher for today’s game, but said it will either be Nick Rogalski or Ben Lynam.

The Knights, meanwhile, will gear up for offseason workouts.

“We had a great summer.

I’m really happy with where we’re at,” Aversa said. “The coaches are excited, and we are really happy with how this team jelled together … we’re happy.”

Allen shows resilience with new Midwest League squad

Allen’s father, Brian, isn’t fazed either way, having missed only a few of his son’s 30 professional starts. Allen finished 2013 with Arizona’s Advanced-A affiliate in Visalia, California, going 1-1 with a 7.94 ERA in 11⅓ innings.

The Cougars travel to Lansing for a three-game series today through Friday. It’s possible, but unlikely, Allen could start the finale against the team from his home city.

He’d be pitching on usual five days’ rest, but with an off day Tuesday, he would have to skip ahead of a teammate in the rotation.

In any event, this marks the second time in as many summers Allen has seen the Cougars as the road team.

Kane County visited South Bend in 2013, and Western and Eastern Division clubs only meet three times a season, alternating sites.

“I have a bunch of friends and family who always ask me if I’m going to be going through [Kane County] and I just haven’t, which is unfortunate,” Allen said.

He chalks it up to “just the way the schedule works out” much as he dismisses his departure from the Diamondbacks as “just kind of the business.”

Should Allen match up against his former teammates next month, he’ll keep a similarly even keel.

His dad, after all, plans to visit Fifth Third Bank Ballpark for some part of next week’s Cougars-South Bend series, as Allen still keeps in touch with the SilverHawks.

“All my buddies back there are pulling for me and I’m pulling for them,” Allen said.

“It’s friendly competition, for sure.”

Brad Allen knows the Lansing Lugnuts’ schedule well enough to know South Bend appears on it nine more times in 2014.

He knows himself much better, meaning a potential start against the SilverHawks down the stretch of the Midwest League season won’t cloud or consume the righthander from Geneva.

“You always want to prove people wrong, and that’s kind of what my career has been based on,” Allen said. “But it’s not just that; you want to prove the people on your side right.”

Allen made 20 appearances and 18 starts for South Bend in 2013 after the parent Arizona Diamondbacks signed him out of the independent Frontier League the previous winter. The best of those outings came Aug. 10, when he retired the final 25 West Michigan batters in a no-hitter.

Allen started four more games for the SilverHawks to open this season – going 3-0 with a 4.64 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 21⅓ innings – before finding his loyalty tested. The Diamondbacks, with many of their organizational brass on hand, cut Allen in late April.

Several Arizona scouts called to express a combination of support and disbelief.

They told Allen they wanted him to keep throwing, and backed up that chatter behind the scenes.

The Toronto Blue Jays organization acquired Allen’s contract in mid-May after he had made one start with his former independent team, the Florence (Kentucky) Freedom. When Blue Jays farm director Charlie Wilson called

Allen to welcome him aboard, he assured he came highly recommended by every Diamondbacks official he spoke with.

“They kind of put the good word out for me and made sure everybody knew that I was available,” Allen said.

His status changed to inactive after just two starts with Lansing. On May 29, Great Lakes leadoff man Jesmuel Valentin slapped a one-hop comebacker at Allen to open the game. The ball caught his throwing hand, and although Allen remained on the mound, he found out afterward he had a hairline fracture on his thumb.

Two runs, four hits, two walks, five Brad Allen strikeouts, six innings. And one head-shaking trip to the disabled list.

If there was a silver lining, it was that the Blue Jays allowed him to rehab with the Lugnuts instead of heading to the club’s spring training complex in Dunedin, Florida.

Allen observed the rest of the staff while still working alongside Lansing pitching coach Vince Horsman, a former Major League left-hander for parts of five seasons.

After five innings of tworun, seven-strikeout ball Sunday at Bowling Green, Allen was 0-2 with a 3.60 ERA in six starts for Lansing. He has struck out 27 and walked nine in 25 innings.

“Didn’t pitch bad,” he said of Sunday’s start, “but you’re not as crisp as you want to be in the middle of your season facing hitters who are in the middle of their season.”

Today: Defensive end

Overview: The Bears were so unhappy with their defensive end play in 2013 that they’ve replaced almost everybody. Three of the top four ends on the roster coming out of training camp last year are gone, with Julius Peppers in Green Bay, Corey Wootton in Minnesota and Cheta Ozougwu waived.

The fourth, Shea McClellin, has been moved back to his college position at linebacker.

Only David Bass and Cornelius Washington return to compete at end, and both may be long shots to make

the club.

The Bears committed $30.5 million guaranteed to sign Lamarr Houston away from the Oakland Raiders and Jared Allen from the Vikings, and another $9 million to pry Willie Young out of Detroit. They will certainly replace Peppers, Wootton and McClellin as this year’s big three. Two more free agents, Trevor Scott and Austen Lane, will compete with Bass, Washington and undrafted rookie free agent Jamil Merrel out of Rutgers for one or possibly two more roster spots as backups.

The centerpiece of this group is of course Allen, who could be headed for Canton some day. All that’s missing from his résumé is a Super Bowl ring, and he spurned a strong pitch from the Seahawks to come to Chicago.

He has had 11 or more sacks in seven straight seasons.

Houston is billed as the best run-stuffing end in the

league, a must-have for the Bears after finishing dead last in the NFL last season against the run, but his pass-rushing skills were lacking his first four years in the league, all of them spent in Oakland.

Don’t be surprised if Houston spends as much or more time at the threetechnique as he does at end, in part because it may best fit his skill set, and in part because general manager Phil Emery has said he wants Houston, Allen and Young all on the field at the same time, and neither Allen nor Young will be playing any tackle.

Position battles: There will be no real battles to watch here as far as playing time goes. Allen will be on the field as close to as much he can and still be effective, all the time in obvious passing situations.

Houston will log serious playing time as well, although more of it may be at tackle than end. Expect Houston outside in suspected running

Young will be on the field most of the time that Houston is inside at tackle and will give Allen an occasional breather.

The battles here are for the backup spots. Bass flashed occasionally last year and may have the slightest of edges over the rest of the group with no real leader in the clubhouse going to Bourbonnais.

Contract situations: With Allen, Houston and Young

all holding freshly signed paper, there are no contract situations to speak of.

Houston is guaranteed the biggest number, but his deal is not a cap-strangler.

Keep an eye on: Young is a player the Bears believe is ready to explode and become a double-digit sack guy, but his $9 million price tag for three years wouldn’t have been that hard for the Lions to match if they thought after four years of coaching him he had another step up in him.

Washington is as impressive a physical specimen as you’ll find in a locker room, but he was a chronic underachiever at Georgia and to date has looked like an athlete who’s not real sure how to play football. But new defensive line coach Paul Pasqualoni is a crusty veteran who knows how to teach the position and could turn out to be just what the doctor ordered for the Bears’ sixthround pick last year.

By DAVID MONTGOMERY The Washington Post A science-fiction thriller about immigration and drone warfare sounds like a mash-up ripped from today’s headlines.

Except that director Alex Rivera started writing “Sleep Dealer” in the late 1990s.

It premiered in 2008 at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won an award for outstanding screenwriting (shared with co-writer David Riker).

The film started appearing in art houses and festivals and getting admiring reviews.

Then, poof! “Sleep Dealer” all but disappeared. The film’s distributor went out of business, and it never got a proper commercial release. It fell to bootleggers and academics to cherish and share the film.

“It’s been the pirates and the professors who have kept this film alive for the last half-decade,” Rivera says.

Now an unusual effort is underway to rescue “Sleep Dealer” from oblivion – and it may prove to be a model for disseminating other worthy films that have been blocked from the usual industry channels.

First, a three-year-old project of the Sundance Institute called #ArtistServices recently selected “Sleep Dealer” to be one of the films it would support by facilitating digital distribution deals with iTunes, Amazon.com and, soon, Netflix.

Then, a grass-roots network of the film’s supporters plus a couple of dozen progressive groups interested in the film’s themes began promoting “Sleep Dealer” on social media. One of the more prominent members of the campaign is Van Jones, co-host of “Crossfire” on CNN and a former green-jobs adviser in the Obama White House.

“I just started calling my friends everywhere,” Jones says in an email. “I said, ‘This guy [Rivera] has rescued this amazing film from the corporate trash bin. This time, we need to make sure everyone sees it.’”

Jones, who calls himself “a science-fiction geek,” says he missed sci-fi flicks that “tackled the serious issues – like race, immigration, class ... . Then ‘Sleep Dealer’ blew me away. I thought this movie could seed a whole new category of film – social justice sci-fi.”

If the digital distribution campaign succeeds, the movie’s supporters say they will arrange for on-demand screenings in theaters.

“Today we are debating drones, jobs and the child refugee crisis at our southern border,” Jones says. “ ‘Sleep Dealer’ puts a human face on all of these issues.”

The character Memo Cruz (played by actor Luis Fernando Pena) leaves the barren fields of his Mexican farming village, where the water has been dammed by a corporation for use elsewhere. He goes to Tijuana, Mexico, where he seeks a “coyotek” – a play on “coyote,” one who smuggles undocumented immigrants.

The coyotek gives him a “node job” so he can become a “cybracero.” The nodes implanted in his muscles allow him to plug into one of the borderland’s virtual factories, where workers make the physical motions that remotely control robots in gleaming American cities. The robots are constructing skyscrapers, cleaning houses, cutting grass.

“This is the American Dream,” explains a character. “We give the United States what they always wanted: all the work, without the workers.”

The pay is better than the wages in poor villages, but the work saps the workers’ energy and spirit, until they collapse from exhaustion, which is why the virtual sweatshops are called “sleep dealers.”

Another character is Luz (Leonor Varela), a struggling Mexican writer who uses her node job to sell her uploaded memories online to survive. She befriends Memo. An unknown virtual customer is especially interested in buying memories about Memo.

And then there is Rudy (Jacob Vargas), a Mexican American in the United States who works as a remote controller of drones that attack suspected “aqua-terrorists” in Memo’s village. What drives the suspense is how these three lives in-

tertwine. (The Mexican characters speak Spanish, with English subtitles.)

The film grew from Rivera’s fascination with paradoxes we take for granted: Borders that are militarized yet porous.

People who are present in their absence, such as immigrants Skyping people back home, or warriors guiding missiles from the comfort of an office.

“Science fiction lets you take the world that is very familiar, and by just exaggerating it or tweaking it a little, you can make that familiar world seem very strange,” Rivera says.

Rivera, 41, grew up in Wappingers Falls, New York. His father immigrated from Peru.

Now based in Los Angeles, Rivera recently has been making poetic music videos about the struggle for immigrant rights, featuring artists including La Santa Cecilia, Aloe Blacc and Manu Chao.

He is developing a feature film about Chicano activist Reies Lopez Tijerina, who fought to restore land rights in New Mexico to the descendants of Mexican families.

Such themes are embedded in “Sleep Dealer.” Before setting out on his virtual migration, Memo quarrels with his father, who wants him to stay in their hopeless cornfield. The old man asks, “Is our future a thing of the past?”

By the end, a wiser, wearier Memo earns the bittersweet hope of protagonists in so many immigrant dramas, imagined and real: “Maybe there’s a future for me here, on the edge of everything. A future with a past. If I connect. And fight.”

Heart attacks during sex are highly unlikely Dear Doctor K: I’m a man in my 60s. I had a heart attack a few months ago, and now I’m afraid to have sex. Is it too strenuous for my heart?

Dear Reader: Your question is a common one. Many of my patients who’ve had a heart attack wonder if and when it will be safe to resume sexual activity.

I can understand why. Physical exertion causes the heart to work harder, and if you’ve had a heart attack, your heart has been injured. My patients often worry about having another heart attack, or about dying during intercourse. These concerns are understandable. But according to my Harvard Medical School colleague, cardiologist Thomas Lee, they are unfounded.

Less than 1 percent of all heart attacks occur during sexual activity. The risk is as low for men who have suffered a heart attack as it is for those without heart disease.

The risk of dying during intercourse is even lower. But interestingly, according to the American Heart Association, extramarital sexual activity increases this risk.

That may be because extramarital sex is more likely to happen with a younger partner in an unfamiliar setting, and anxiety about

If you’ve had angioplasty or bypass surgery, your doctor will tell you how long to wait before resuming sexual activity. In general, if you have had angioplasty, wait until the puncture site has healed. After open coronary artery bypass surgery, wait about six to eight weeks, until your breastbone has healed. Dr. Lee notes that if you’ve had minimally invasive or robotic bypass surgery, most doctors will advise you to resume sexual activity once you feel ready. That’s because minimally invasive surgery does not involve cutting the breastbone.

As always, let your symptoms (or lack thereof) be your guide.

For example, if you don’t have symptoms of heart disease – breathlessness or palpitations, for example – you are likely at low risk of having a heart attack during sex. The same is true if you can pass a stress test without experiencing chest pain. Relative

to any vigorous exercise – jogging, biking, swimming – the amount of exertion during sex (and, hence, the need for your heart to work harder) is pretty small.

On the other hand, do not have sex if you experience symptoms of heart disease at any time.

Your heart attack was caused by disease of the arteries of your heart. Having symptoms of heart disease after you’ve had a heart attack can mean, unfortunately, that the disease in your arteries is still threatening your heart.

You need to bring this to the attention of your doctor! Delay sexual activity until your condition is stable.

More important, everyone recovering normally from a heart attack actually needs regular exercise. It is a part of every cardiac rehabilitation program. Regular exercise under medical supervision strengthens the heart.

Don’t be afraid of exercising after a heart attack: It’s good for you. And when your doctor has cleared you to do it, sex is good for you, too.

Dr. Wallace: Please settle this friendly family disagreement. I’m a cross-country runner, and my older brother is a wrestler.

Wrestlers wrestle an opponent for six short minutes with two long timeouts after two minutes of combat.

Cross-country runners run as fast as they can for two and a half miles across fields, up and down hills and around golf courses. It takes the average runner about 15 minutes to run the race.

With this information on high school wrestling and cross-country running, which sport do you consider to be more strenuous? We have a dinner bet on you! – Jake, Santa Ana, Calif.

Dear Jake: You came to the right guy for an answer. As a high school student, I was a cross-country runner, and my brother was a wrestler at Emerson High School in Gary, Indiana. We had the same debate. I’m still convinced that cross-country running is more strenuous, and he is still convinced that it’s wrestling.

Dr. William Strong, a cardiologist at the Medical College of Georgia, rated all sports on their degree of strenuous exertion, including football, ice hockey, wrestling, lacrosse, basketball, field hockey, soccer, volleyball, cross-country running, skiing and track and field.

The two most strenuous sports were tied for first: cross-country running and wrestling.

But since you asked me what I thought was more strenuous, I must say cross country by a

Dear Jenny: Visit a local humane society and ask if you can volunteer to help the veterinarian who takes care of the health of the animals at the shelter. That way you can ask questions and see for yourself if you could perform the same services if you were to become a vet.

Dr. Wallace: Our school district has made physical education an elective, not a required course. I will be in the ninth grade, and I chose to take physical education. I would like to take P.E., but my parents think that P.E. is a big waste of time. They are worried that I will be missing out on more important classes. I’d like to hear what you think.

There is a strong case for North’s raising one no-trump to three no-trump, eschewing Stayman. He has a high honor in his doubleton and extra high-card strength. Even if North uncovers a 4-4 spade fit, game in that strain might fail due to, for example, a bad trump split, when there are nine winners in no-trump.

South starts with eight top tricks: three hearts, one diamond and four clubs. The ninth winner will come from spades. But playing on that suit will give the lead back to the defenders and maybe they can run the diamond suit.

The Rule of Seven recommends holding up the diamond ace for one round and taking the second trick. Here, though, that is fatal.

West gets in with his spade ace and cashes three diamond tricks.

If the diamonds are 4-3, South is always safe. But if they are 5-2, what is the layout?

Surely East has honor-doubleton because West would have led the king from K-Q-J-x-x.

South should win the first trick with dummy’s diamond ace to block the suit.

BIG WALK crew conquers mosquitoes on 70-mile hike KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – A tennis ballsized spider, “gigantic” flies and mosquitoes “so bad, we didn’t notice the flies.”

Ben Westfall was describing the conditions encountered during a recent effort, The BIG WALK – a 70-mile hike to raise funds for the Kaneland Harter Middle School jazz band.

Westfall, 31, co-owner of Da Capo Music Studio in Elburn, was part of a group that walked from a lighthouse on the shores of Lake Michigan to the coast of Lake Superior. He was joined by Bob Cates, 45, Chris Goddard, 45, and David Mannia, 37. Kristin Paxinos, the other co-owner of Da Capo, joined the group and drove a support vehicle.

Denise Blaszynski, president of the Kaneland Performing Arts Boosters, said the effort has raised almost $500. The men on the trip were connected through Da Capo.

Cates and his daughters have taken lessons there. Goddard and Mannia also are fathers of Da Capo students. Westfall said he enjoys tackling such efforts, and all said they wanted to help raise funds for the Kaneland music program.

They said they enjoyed getting to know each other more while on the trip, and they embraced

They said the weather was OK, but the bugs provided the greatest challenges. Westfall said at one break that he had 17 ticks covering his socks, but he added that “the mosquitoes were worse.” The others agreed.

“There would be 50 or 100 mosquitoes,” Mannia said.

“And it was like a cloud. It was unreal.”

“You couldn’t stop,” Cates said. “There was no lunch break. The mosquitoes were so bad.”

Instead, they said, they relied on beef jerky from Ream’s

Elburn Market and gummy bears. But they did enjoy breakfast made by Paxinos each day. At times, they said, there were some injuries to fight through. But they said they were proud of making the trip in four days – they originally had planned to do it in five. Westfall said it was harder than a 24-day bike trip he once did.

“It was man vs. nature, and it was man vs. himself, mentally,” Westfall said.

Westfall said he already has plans for another project next year – a bicycle ride from St. Louis to Elburn. He said it likely would be another fundraiser, with the recipient
