Church members help out community for service projects

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Members of a Campton Hills church Sunday put their message of service into action across Kane County.

About 75 people from Congregational United Church of Christ, 40W451 Fox Mill Blvd., Campton Hills, participated in the fourth annual Jesus Has Left the Building day.

The program puts church members to work on the church grounds and six other sites in the county. Every year, the church identifies different community projects in need of volunteers, and then church members sign up for a project of their choosing, said Wyonne Hegland, chairwoman of the program and a member of the church’s mission committee.

This year’s event included projects at the Anderson Animal Shelter in South Elgin, Corron Farm in Campton Township, Garfield Farm Museum in Campton Hills, Marklund in Geneva, the St. Charles Heritage Center in St. Charles and helping a church member in need at home.

The Rev. Suzy Daly, the church’s associate minister, brought Jesus Has Left the Building to the church because she was familiar with a similar type of program offered at another church in Naperville, Hegland said.

Hegland said the event involves a great deal of fellowship and allows the church members to get to know one another better and their community as well.

John Speck of St. Charles shovels dirt into a low spot during Jesus Has Left the Building volunteer day Sunday at Historic Corron Farm in Campton Hills.

St. Charles resident John Speck said he never had been to Corron Farm before Sunday. He decided to volunteer for the farm project with 16 other church members because he prefers to work outdoors. Speck, a member of the church for 10 years, has participated in the church’s previous service programs at other sites. He helped dig up grass and sod around a pavilion so the group could spread mulch and do more digging nearby so ornamental prairie grasses could be planted.

“The work here goes back to the church’s message of increasing our love for God and neighbors,” Speck said.

“You get to know the folks on a different level.”

from Lisa Mertz, program manager of the Campton Township Open Space program, which includes the farm. Mertz is grateful that the church’s members were there to help Sunday. The Open Space’s monthly volunteer work day Saturday was rained out.

“It means everything for us because we don’t have much staff to speak of,” she said. “[Volunteers] are our workforce.”

Over at Garfield Farms, another group from the church worked in the antique flower garden. This year has been difficult working in the garden – extra hands were needed to get the weeds under control with all the rain, said Jerome Johnson, Garfield Farms executive director.

“It’s good to see them reaching out to the community and being involved,” Johnson said of the church.

“It says a lot about them.”

I kind of enjoy getting to know how people think. I think pursuing that would be really interesting for me.

What is your favorite restaurant? Rex Italian Foods in Norridge You are a black belt. When did you become one, and how long have you been studying?

I’ve been studying under Master [Kim] Cote for three years now, going on four. I tested for a black belt just under a year ago. A couple of highlights – it’s helped me grow stronger, it’s helped me grow faster and it’s helped me anticipate what people will do. I think that’s what makes me want to be a psychologist, just interpreting people.

What is an interesting factoid about yourself?

People look at me and think, ‘He’s a big, scary guy.’

I’m normally just sitting at home, just doing nothing. But throw me in a dangerous situation, and I guarantee I will be the one walking away from it.

LOCAL NEWS St. Charles committee backs residential chicken regulations

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles city committee on Monday supported added regulations on residential chickens, but they will work with residents who already have more than the proposed limit of six.

The Planning and Development Committee voted unanimously in favor of the proposed regulations, which also includes a five-foot minimum distance for any chicken enclosure to the property line, and a year-round landscape or wall screening of the chickens.

The committee directed city officials to explore regulations after those officials said there was growing interest in acquiring and maintaining chickens among residents.

Matthew Hill was part of a group of St. Charles residents who spoke favorably of chickens at the meeting. He currently has eight on his prop-

erty and wanted to have more so his family and friends could consume more eggs.

He was disappointed in the city’s limit on six, but takes comfort in the fact that he won’t be forced to give up two chickens unless they are a nuisance.

If there are any complaints that stem from the chickens, they would be noise- or odor-related, said Bob Vann, the city’s building and code enforcement division manager.

Hill said that none of his neighbors have ever complained about the chickens.

Instead, he usually gets people on his property that are curious about the birds and want to learn more.

“They are awesome to have, it’s a lot of fun,” Hill said of the chickens. “They do become your pet.”

The additional restrictions will officially go into effect once the full St. Charles City Council votes on them at their next meeting, Vann said.

Antiques on State celebrates seven years

ST. CHARLES – Teen Writers and Artists Project will host a 12-hour dance event from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Marquee Youth Stage on the lower level of the Charlestowne Mall, 3800 E. Main St., St. Charles.

The event is intended to raise money to continue to fund programming offered to teens throughout the western suburbs, most notably in Batavia, St. Charles and Elgin.

In a news release, T-WAAP! identified itself as a “nonprofit organization dedicated to helping teens make their artistic dreams come true.

The organization is dedicated to mentoring teens, ages 13 to 19, in the arts through an online community, real world workshops, and connecting teens with mentoring opportunities from artists working professionally in that teen’s particular art form.”

A SPECIAL LESSON Fine Line class teaches weaving for blind or visually impaired

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Five women weavers pulled their shuttles through the space – known as the shed – pulling through threads of colors such as peacock blue, silver gray and poppy red.

After the threads are pulled through, there was a thump, as the loom beated in the new row. This is how weavers create scarves, place mats, wall hangings, shawls and purses.

But these weavers consult patterns and find colors marked in Braille as they are all either blind or visually impaired.

This past week is the sixth year they have gathered for their Weaving for the Blind and Visually Impaired class at the Fine Line Creative Arts Center in St. Charles Township. Usually, it’s six women, but one was out sick this year.

All are teachers or retired teachers.

The inspiration for the class, taught by Heather Winslow of Sugar Grove, was Linn Sorge, 62, of DeKalb.

Blind since birth, Sorge already was very accomplished as a full-time teacher at the Hadley School for the Blind, teaching adaptive technology and music courses online to people all over the world.

But Sorge said she always wanted to weave.

“And not just back and forth with a treadle and shuttle,” Sorge said. “I wanted to do everything – start to finish. I wanted to take a big cone of yarn and turn it into fabric every step of the way.”

And so it began, first with Sorge taking weaving lessons from Denise Kavanagh, founder of Fine Line, who died of cancer in 2002. Then Winslow took on the weaving classes, including teaching Sorge.

ing with her,” Sorge said of Winslow. “After we had been doing this a while, my friends were envious about this. I asked her if she would be willing to try to teach them a couple things in a summer class.

She said, ‘If you will be there, I will.’ ” And so it continued.

“That was probably the hardest thing for me to do,” Winslow said. “I have no training in working with visually impaired or blind people. And so what I found the most difficult is to figure

out was ways of verbalizing concepts or skills that they had to do. How do you teach somebody to tie a square knot if they can’t see what you are doing?”

Winslow adapted the class, verbalizing the instructions she could not demonstrate.

“I had to come up with ways for them to see with their fingers. They see with touch as a sense for seeing, and I had to come up with ways they can use that sense to understand what I am trying to get across,” Winslow said.

Winslow found that her blind and visually impaired students have exquisite memory skills for verbal instructions.

“They are very sharp,” Winslow said. “And since the

after, a color class explaining what colors go together, and which are complimentary, took the mystery out of how to choose colors.

“I have no clue of colors,” Sorge said. “I will never know what blue really is. But ... I can understand that blue goes with this and not with that.”

The class includes sighted assistants that help out with tangles and other problems.

But other than that, the students do everything themselves.

Sorge’s friend Kathy Hudziak, 65, of Janesville, Wisconsin, also blind since birth, said looms were fascinating to her.

When she visited Sorge, she was taken with the scarves and wall hangings her friend had made.

“I love the texture of the woven cloth,” Hudziak said, and she asked her friend if she could learn to weave, too.

Since then, Hudziak has made dish towels and place mats,

weaving class with gusto, making several sets of place mats, scarves and dish towels.

Vicki Mullis, 55, of Jacksonville, is legally blind from congenital cataracts and still has some vision.

“This is my fourth year,” Mullis said of the weaving class. “I’ve made two scarves and a shawl, and the third year I made table runners and gave a couple as Christmas gifts. This year, I’m making a wall hanging, and I’m very very excited about it.”

Another student, Selinda Chasteen, who missed this year because of a bad cold, became blind in 2005 as the result of a stroke.

Chasteen, 67, of DeKalb, said she wanted to learn weaving because she used to do embroidery and crochet, but once she became blind, “suddenly I had nothing to do with my hands.”

“It drove my husband crazy. He said, ‘Let’s try weaving,’ and he called Fine Line,” Chasteen said. “Heather taught me how to see with my fingers instead of my eyes.”

Comforter, car odor among evidence in Geneva murder

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com A comforter containing “environmental debris” and long hairs was found during a search of the Geneva home of a woman and the man accused of killing her, according to court records.

Police searched the home of Shadwick and Kathleen King in the 800 block of Oak Street in Geneva after Kathleen King, 32, was found dead July 6 on Union Pacif- Shadwick King ic Railroad tracks, about 1,200 feet south of her home, according to a case synopsis read in court Friday.

Shadwick King, 47, is accused of asphyxiating his wife, Kathleen, on July 6 and placing her body on the railroad tracks. The comforter was found in a washing machine at the home, and the hairs on it appear to match Kathleen’s hair, according to the synopsis.

King is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the death of his wife. King on Monday remained in the Kane County Jail on a $1.5

million bond, according to court records. The state requested that King surrender his passport if he posts bail.

A female later identified as Kathleen King was spotted on the southernmost Union Pacific Railway tracks south of Esping Park, 227 Briar Lane in Geneva, at 6:37 a.m.

July 6 by a train operator on another track. The state alleges that she was placed there sometime between 6:15 a.m. and 6:37 a.m. because a train that passed by on the other track at 6:15 a.m. did not see her.

“It is clear that the body was placed, was staged where it was,” said Greg Sams, a Kane County assistant state’s attorney on Friday while reading the case synopsis at Shadwick King’s bond hearing.

Kathleen King’s body, including the position of her head on a rail, was placed in an attempt to have her body mutilated, according to the synopsis. Cadaver dogs searching the car Shadwick King drove identified the odor of decomposition in the back seat, according to court records.

Surveillance video showed Shadwick King at a Shell gas station at about 7:45 a.m.

July 6, and then he did not reappear on video until about 8:55 a.m. that day, when he went to the Jewel-Osco store in St. Charles.

Sams told Associate Judge Clint Hull during the bond hearing that this is not the time frame where something was done to the body.

Earlier that day, Shadwick King saw his wife texting another man so he took her phone and began texting the man himself, according to the case synopsis.

Investigators think Kathleen King was still alive at 5:15 a.m. July 6 because she sent the man a Facebook message saying that the recent text messages sent from her phone weren’t written by her.

OBITUARIES GLADYS CAROLINA OLSON Born: Aug. 18, 1918 Died: July 11, 2014 Gladys Carolina Olson, 95, passed away peacefully at Michaelson Health Center on July 11, 2014, surrounded by the love and prayers of her family. Gladys was born on Aug. 18, 1918, to loving parents Oscar and Ida Bowgren in Owego, New York.

As a young girl, her family moved back to Wasco. Gladys graduated from St. Charles High School in 1935. She grew up as the only daughter amongst six brothers.

She grew up not too interested in dolls but did play a lot of baseball.

Her family didn’t have electricity or running water while she was growing up, but they made it work.

Gladys found love in 1939, when John Olson stole her heart. They knew each other while growing up in Wasco. He won her love with his humor. They were married at the family home in Wasco on Sept. 16,

1939. Gladys and John were active members of the Grace Lutheran Church. Gladys was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the choir.

Gladys really wanted to go to nursing school after high school, but due to the Great Depression she was never able to do it. She kept her dream alive, and at age 49, she took a job as a nurse’s assistant at Geneva Community Hospital. Gladys and John moved to Mountain Home, Arkansas, in 1972 where she resumed her career as a nurse’s assistant for three more years. In 1995 John passed away, and Gladys moved back to Illinois. She worked as a bookkeeper for Operadio in St. Charles and Bergland & Company in Wasco for many years.

Gladys was taught to crochet by her mother, and it was a favorite hobby of hers for many years.

Gladys also enjoyed knitting, a skill she learned in 4-H club. Gladys was a gifted piano and organ player.

It wasn’t a party at the Bowgren family’s get-togethers unless Aunt

your opinion.

Gladys was playing the piano while everyone joined in and sang. She was a lover of animals, always having a pet cat, and feeding the birds.

Gladys was never blessed with children of her own, but she cherished her 22 nieces and nephews, and countless great-nieces and -nephews. She enjoyed sending birthday and anniversary cards well into her 90s.

Gladys has gone home to Jesus and will remain in our hearts and memories!

Gladys is survived by 22 nieces and nephews, and many great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents, Oscar and Ida Bowgren; six brothers, Verner (Grace), Gordon (Bernice), Stanley (Nina), Clifton (Jewel), Hilton (Margaret & Ann) and Charles “Babe”(Elizabeth and Mary).

The visitation will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, at Grace Lutheran Church of Lily Lake.

Batavia Park District hiring 15 youth

BATAVIA – A grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources will enable the Batavia Park District to have an opportunity to hire 15 youth employees this summer, according to a news release from the park district. The district was announced as a recipient of the IDNR Grant as part of the Illinois Youth Recreation Corps Program. The grant will save the district almost $40,000.

All Batavia Park District positions will be part time starting now until mid-August and will be held by youth ages 14 to 18.

Rain washes away pet parade at Windmill City Festival

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – With half a dozen demonstrations scheduled Saturday afternoon at the Peg Bond Center, Julie Saloga of Batavia was hopeful more people would attend the Windmill City Festival throughout the day.

“It’s getting busier,” she said around noon.

Morning rain not only washed away visitors but also prompted organizers to cancel the 10 a.m. pet parade – the first such cancellation in at least seven years, said Kari Felkamp, director of marketing for the Batavia Park District.

“It was pouring,” Felkamp said, recalling how she and two others took shelter under a tent on the festival grounds in downtown Batavia.

Festival staff monitored the weather throughout the morning using smartphones, Felkamp said.

Saloga – a craft show and flea market vendor – also tracked the radar on her phone and let fellow vendors know when they could expect the rain to ease, she said.

“Thankfully, we have product that can be out rain or shine,” Saloga said of the garden spinners she and her husband sell at their store, Windmill City Spinners & More Decor.

Other vendors, however, packed up when the rain hit,

Saloga said.

“There’s only seven of us,” she said, noting there were supposed to be about 30.

As the weather cleared, Saloga hoped more vendors would decide to resume business. She said the day’s scheduled events – including a fencing demonstration and dance performance – likely would increase attendance.

Saturday normally is Windmill City Festival’s busiest day, Felkamp said.

In addition to the main stage events, activities included a whiffle ball home run derby, a diaper derby, live band karaoke, a bags tournament, carnival rides and live music.

Although Saturday’s rain dampened turnout that morning, Felkamp noted good turnouts for Thursday and Friday.

Organizers last tried a Thursday opening night in 2008, Felkamp said, but it got stormed out. This year, she said, the Batavia Chamber mixer brought a lot of people out Thursday, which saw about $3,500 in beer sales.

Windmill City Festival continued Sunday with an ice cream eating contest, a fire hose challenge and, among other activities, live music.

The Windmill City Festival committee includes representatives from the Batavia Park District, Batavia Chamber of Commerce, Batavia Depot Museum and the city of Batavia.

CAMPTON HILLS – New rules are in place to help preserve Campton Hills’ dark skies.

The Village Board in May approved the responsible outdoor lighting ordinance for new construction. It was written with the goal of preserving and enhancing the ability to view the night sky and to promote sound environmental policies consistent with the spirit of the comprehensive plan, according to a village news release.

The release states that the ordinance applies to new construction of all commercial fixtures and residential street, pedestrian, sign, flood and parking lot light fixtures.

It does not apply to fixtures on homes, according to the village.

“New construction” is defined as construction of entirely new structures, including

new poles; enlargement of any existing structure by at least 50 percent; and, the release states, the addition of new lighting fixtures.

It does not apply to the replacement of light fixtures that existed before July 1, according to the release.

The release indicates that light fixtures affected by the ordinance must meet several criteria designed to reduce uplighting, bright white lighting and glare.

The dark skies ordinance stemmed from a 2009 referendum question. Village Trustee Sue George, Christine Brauer of the Plan Commission, and Illinois Coalition for Responsible Outdoor Lighting cofounders Drew Carhart and Debra Luginbuhl were among those who helped staff and engineering consultants with the ordinance.

At times, Koenen said she questioned the practicality of teaching the intricacies of chemical bonds and atoms to students of an impoverished country that, she said, had little infrastructure and no obvious waste disposal program.

The Georgetown student said she found fulfillment de-

spite her pupils not having the books or the necessary lab equipment, because critical thinking and studying skills slowly replaced blind memorizing of all the material.

Koenen said her biggest regret was not being able to stay longer because, she said, her students were just starting to feel more comfortable. They began to ask more questions and participate more as time went on, she said.

Koenen said when students inquired about a particular problem or engaged more directly in class it brought her the “most joy out of teaching.”

Zanzibar, Tanzania, is not necessarily a popular place for young college students to spend their summers. Yet, as Liselot Koenen – a graduate of St. Charles North High School – climbed onto a plane to return to America from Tanzania, she said she was already planning when she could return or make another trip to a developing country.

Koenen spent six weeks of her summer teaching chemistry through America’s Unofficial Ambassadors, an organization that strives to “build mutual understanding between America and the Muslim world,” according to its website.

Stefan Cornibert, program coordinator for America’s Unofficial Ambassadors, said the organization looks for good communicators and people who are serious about foreign service.

Cornibert said the goals of the program are twofold. He said AUA wants its volunteers to have a “substantive impact” with the Muslim communities and be good diplomats by sharing American culture and sharing what they learned while abroad with friends and family after they return.

Before she left for the trip, Koenen took a number of Web seminars through AUA about culture, religion and safety. She had never taught more than tennis lessons before that, and Koenen said she only knew “hello” and “goodbye” in Swahili.

“I honestly didn’t know what to expect,” Koenen said.

Koenen said she fielded a number of questions about what American life and American wealth is like. She also said students would ask her about how to get to America.

While she said they were difficult questions for a 21-year-old to adequately answer, she said she often told her students that they must focus and learn from their surroundings and help each other to instill change.

Koenen emphasized the importance of being culturally sensitive in developing countries. She said people must realize outsiders cannot just change communities, but rather they need to understand how to help within cultural boundaries and create situations for people to help themselves.

She spoke about the drive she has to help others, and while she could not identify its source, she said when she sees people struggle, she is inspired to help.

“My own goal in life … is to help people help themselves,” Koenen said. “I love seeing people empowered.”

Koenen plans to finish her degree and complete her senior thesis in Africa.

NORTH AURORA – Village officials are looking at reducing impact fees for a developer that wants to build a hotel on Orchard Road in North Aurora.

As proposed, MHG Hotels LLC would pay $90,000 less in traffic, water and storm sewer connection fees. Village trustees are set to vote Monday on the fee reduction.

MHG Hotels LLC wants to build a four-story, 92-room Fairfield Marriott Inn and Suites hotel on Orchard Road in North Aurora, across the street from the North Aurora Auto Mall.

The developer also owns Holiday Inn off of Orchard Road in Aurora.

Village Administrator Steve Bosco said the hotel is expected to give an economic

boost to the corridor.

“We have had calls from businesses in that area that are very excited about the fact that a hotel is coming,” Bosco said.

Staff had proposed a fee reduction of $78,555, based on traffic impact analysis and sewer usage fees. But attorney John Philipchuck, who is representing MHG Hotels LLC, said that the developer needed a fee reduction closer to $100,000 in order to start the project.

Following that discussion, staff looked for additional ways to cut fees. Bosco said hotels require rather large water connections.

“A 4- to 6-inch water connection fee would cost between $20,990 and $35,870,” Bosco said.

He said the developer has agreed to accept the $90,000 impact fee reduction.

World Cup victory symbol of German resurgence

By LEONID BERSHIDSKY Bloomberg News “Weltmeister Deutschland! Jaaaaaaaaaa!” reads the celebratory front page of Germany’s most popular daily newspaper, Bild. Germany won soccer’s World Cup, and the victory is a symbol of the country’s resurgence.

Last time Germany won the World Cup was in 1990, when it also played Argentina for the title. That game was a slogging, dirty affair, the first World Cup final in which a player was sent off (two, actually). And, as Sunday night, Germany won 1-0.

The 1990 tournament was the last in which the German team played as West Germany – the Berlin Wall had fallen, but the country faced

a long path toward reunification against opposition from some of its neighbors. To all practical purposes, the process only ended last year, when East-West migration within Germany finally evened out.

Chancellor Helmut Kohl’s Germany of the 1990s was a country of hope and caution.

The government’s main goal was to stitch the country back together, and that meant assuaging lingering fears of a too-powerful Germany. The sutures have almost healed by now and Prenzlauer Berg, the Berlin district where Chancellor Angela Merkel once lived modestly as an East German academic, is now an affluent area with fancy boutiques and high rents.

Merkel’s Germany makes no excuses about the past or

future: The apologies have been made. It is the most populous country in the European Union, with more than 80 million people, the biggest net contributor to the EU’s budget and the second biggest contributor to NATO, providing 14.5 percent of alliance budget, compared to 21.7 percent for the United States.

Germany has everything, from old-style, family-run industrial businesses, such as BMW, to an exciting start-up scene (SoundCloud is based in Berlin). Unlike some other European economies, it also has growth that is not a statistical accident, but is based on making things people around the world want to buy. No wonder it was able to finance the bailouts that followed the European debt crisis.

And it hasn’t been shy about claiming the central role in the EU as its reward, all the while sighing about the added responsibility.

Germans are meticulous in most things they do, so they have a training program for bureaucrats who want to win EU posts. That’s how they won at the World Cup, too, patiently building up a training and management system that eventually bore fruit. Sunday night’s victory against the fierce and determined Argentines was a beauty, with veteran Miroslav Klose apologizing to rivals after fouling accidentally, the young German midfield playing a joyful passing game, and the powerful Bastian Schweinsteiger fighting like a gladiator. It was 22-year-old Mario Goetze

who scored the flawless winning goal. Germany deserved to win: It controlled the ball 60 percent of the time, and seven of its 10 shots were on goal, compared with two out of 10 for Argentina.

Sunday night on the streets of Berlin, people of many ethnicities launched fireworks, danced and clinked beer mugs in celebration of their soccer victory, but perhaps also of something bigger: a new, non-threatening pride and confidence that Germany has allowed itself to feel now that it is finally one strong country again. Literally translated, Weltmeister – world champion – means master of the world.

Presumably solid with NCAA Division II Central Missouri State as his college football destination last winter, the prospective wide receiver decided to pursue a preferred walk-on opportunity at Pittsburgh instead.

Brown reported to campus for early workouts in late June. On Aug. 4, his 18th birthday, he’ll open two-aday fall practices intent on solidifying a spot with the Panthers almost six months after a conflicted overnight commute to campus with his family.

“Just being here and seeing the guys and competing with the guys I’m competing with, I really feel like I made the right decision, definitely,” Brown said. “Not a doubt in my mind that I’m where I should be right now. I think I have a very good chance of competing here.”

At a national signing day ceremony in February, the 6-foot-4, 214-pound Brown discussed his decision to commit to Central Missouri on a playing-time platform. He figured his cleats could roam the Mules’ Vernon Kennedy Field sooner than they would the Panthers’ Heinz Field, home of the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers.

Besides, Pitt had only solidified its offer within a few days of signing day, giving Brown little time to process what he was turning down – the chance to play Division-I football.

“It’s always been in my heart and in my mind that I wanted to play at this level.

And I felt like I was maybe trying to settle into D-II. I was trying to convince myself that I’d be happy there,” he said. “But then when it came down to it, it truly was just a great academic opportunity that Pittsburgh had to offer.

“It’s a fantastic university, and once I got down here

“When I told him, he completely understood the opportunity and basically kind of let me know that he thought I was going to do just fine moving forward,” Brown said. “That was nice to have the reassurance from him on that end.”

The affirmations didn’t stop when Brown came to Pittsburgh. For starters, he’s among a handful of preferred walk-ons who were invited to campus early. The rest of that group will arrive in August.

Brown also has had preliminary talks with Panthers coaches about the possibility of shifting to tight end down the road as he puts on more weight.

Those are the things that make Brown feel he’s progressing into a valued part of the program. There are others – such as meeting Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, whose team shares parts of its facility with Pitt – that suggest he’s already arrived.

“It’s just one of those days,” Johnson said. “We hit a couple balls hard, but couldn’t string anything together.”

After a quiet two innings for both teams, Beloit’s B.J. Boyd got the Snappers going with a one-out single. After a Branden Cogswell single advanced Boyd to third, Chih Fang Pan hit a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

The Cougar basepaths started to heat up in the fifth inning.

After two quick outs, right fielder Kevin Brown and left fielder Trey Martin reached on back-to-back walks. Bote made his presence felt with a two-run double, which allowed the Cougars to take a 2-1 lead.

Earlier, Bote also flashed the leather, robbing Pohl of a hit with a diving stop and quick toss to first in the second inning.

The Cougars (62-32 overall, 17-7 second half) will hit the road for a six-game trip, first stopping off in Lansing to take on the Lugnuts for three games and then the Great Lakes Loons for three more. It will be the first time Kane County will play either team this year.

Johnson is looking for his team to maintain the tempo it has exhibited on the mound.

“We want to throw strikes,” he said. “We’ve been doing a good job of that. I expect a good outing.”

Notre Dame product looks to make splash

By SETH GRUEN sgruen@suntimes.com Defenseman Stephen Johns got a chuckle out of being reminded that this marks the fifth time he has attended the Blackhawks’ prospect camp.

The 60th overall pick in the 2010 NHL draft spent four seasons at Notre Dame resisting the lure of the pro game, being confident that the ice time would help his game improve.

It worked for Johns – possibly making this his last experience at the summer showcase of the organization’s future talent.

He has rounded into a physical defenseman who might make the Hawks roster out of training camp.

“Going to be nerve-racking to see where I land this fall, but I’m going to give it everything I have,” Johns said. “Hopefully, everything works out for the best but if not, I’m just going to have to keep working and try to progress as much as possible.”

The Hawks possibly could move defensemen Johnny Oduya, Nick Leddy or Michal Rozsival to clear cap space, so the organization will look to

its crop of young defensemen.

Johns, 22, possesses the defensive skills it takes to play for coach Joel Quenneville. At 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, he loves to hit – so much so that it became a problem for him during his freshman season at Notre Dame.

He would hit anything that moved, which earned him 98 penalty minutes in 44 games.

Johns settling down during his senior season, when he score eight goals and spent 69 minutes in the box.

“Trying to run around and kill anyone, got myself in a lot of problems,” he said. “[The coaches] told me to rein it back, let the play and hits come to me and not go looking for it. I really progressed in that area this year, and in Rockford [where he played eight games last season] even more.”

The limited time he played for the IceHogs, the Hawks’ American Hockey League affiliate, gave Johns exposure to the speed and, more importantly, pressure of playing at the professional level.

He saw some ice time on the special teams in Rockford and realized those situations

“It just comes with experience.”

Johns has said numerous times that the last year was huge in his development and that he saw improvement on both ends of the ice.

While almost every prospect over the past two days has noted the increased speed of the game, even at this week’s camp, Johns has indicated the difference is as much mental as it is physical.

The mental aspect is perhaps where he has improved the most. While at Rockford, Johns realized that on defense he has to think two or three passes ahead to insure he is in position. It might be getting a little old, but prospect camp at Johnny’s IceHouse West will provide him with more exposure to that.

“It’s a great experience coming here every summer,” Johns said. “Getting a little competitive in the summer isn’t a bad thing. Everyone’s itching to get back and start playing in the fall.”

During the 19th century, especially in the South, homes often had long, wide front halls that went from the front door to the back door. That allowed the air to circulate and helped cool the house. Clever furniture makers created a table that could be stored against the wall until it was needed. The table had deep drop leaves hinged to a narrow top. When opened, the leaves were supported by “swing” legs, and the extended table could open to 45 inches long and 32 inches wide. Sometimes the table was made with an under-the-top storage drawer that opened from the side. This type of drop-leaf table was made in the 16th century and has been made in a variety of styles, including modern versions made in the 21st century. ***

A: Your nut dish was made in Bavaria (Germany) sometime between 1890 and 1914 but decorated in the United States. The decorating of porcelain “blanks” by independent artists rather than factory-employed artists was popular in the United States from the 1870s to the 1930s. It began in Cincinnati in 1874, when Mary Louise McLaughlin saw a set of European china paints and urged her art instructor to organize a class in china painting. The class was so successful that the ladies in the class exhibited their work at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. By 1900 there were an estimated 20,000 china painters in America. Other Beatles trading cards can sell for a few dollars to a few hundred dollars,

“Cli-fi,” an emerging literary genre, is bringing environmental issues to light.

Climate change has created a new literary genre

By DANIEL BLOOM Special To The Washington Post Is climate change due for an “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” moment? The 1852 bestseller helped transform abolitionism into a mainstream cause. Now, “cli-fi” is trying to do the same for environmentalism.

The emerging genre is a cousin of sci-fi. But its books are set, NPR writes, “in worlds, not unlike our own, where the Earth’s systems are noticeably off-kilter.” And it’s gaining both fans and writers.

The climate-change canon dates back to the 1962 novel “The Drowned World” by British writer J. G. Ballard. In it, polar ice-caps have melted and global temperatures have soared.

Presciently, he depicts some coastal American and European cities under water.

But Ballard’s work didn’t pinpoint humans as the cause of Earth’s precipitous decline. It wasn’t until the mid2000s that authors started grappling seriously with our role in impending environmental catastrophe.

In 2004, Michael Crichton released “State of Fear,” a novel about eco-ter-

rorists. Ian McEwan followed up in 2010 with “Solar,” a story about a jaded physicist who tries to solve global warming. And in 2012, Barbara Kingsolver’s “Flight Behavior” gracefully explored how one town is reshaped by a changing ecosystem. As The New York Times wrote in its review of the book: “How do we live, Kingsolver asks, and with what consequences, as we hurtle toward the abyss in these times of epic planetary transformation?”

Perhaps the best-known “cli-fi” work is Nathaniel Rich’s “Odds Against Tomorrow,” released in 2013.

That book sold more than 100,000 copies and drew major media attention.

In it, a near-future New York is submerged when a Category 3 hurricane hits. As Rich was editing the final proofs, Sandy submerged much of the East Coast, a strange moment of life imitating art.

Rich and others say that fiction can stir emotion and action in a way scientific reports and newscasts don’t.

“You know, scientists and other people are trying to get their message across about various aspects of the climate change issue,” Georgia Institute of Technology professor Judith Curry

told NPR. She went on: “And it seems like fiction is an untapped way of doing this – a way of smuggling some serious topics into the consciousness” of readers who may not be following the science.

That means finding characters or stories that resonate. And it also means getting rid of jargon and cliches. In Rich’s 300-page book, for example, the word “climate change” doesn’t appear once.

“I think the language around climate change is horribly bankrupt and, for the most part, are examples of bad writing, really,” Rich told NPR last year. “I think we need a new type of novel to address a new type of reality ... which is that we’re headed toward something terrifying and large and transformative. And it’s the novelist’s job to try to understand, what is that doing to us?”

A growing number of YA books also attack this topic, including Mindy McGinnis’s “Not a Drop to Drink,” Staci Lloyd’s “The Carbon Diaries 2015” and Joshua David Bellin’s “Survival Colony 9.” Even the post-apocalyptic “Hunger Games” trilogy hints at a climate-ravaged earth.

Jeff is now 11. He has had very few unsupervised visitations with his dad over the last few years and is always talking about how great a guy he is. I have tried to explain that his father has done “inappropriate things” that got him in trouble with the law, which is why he can’t have contact with his sister.

Instead of trusting my judgment for having moved several states away, Jeff always tells me about how he wants to go live with his dad. Jeff has his father on a pedestal because he sees him only rarely, and has no concept of what the reality of

At some point your son will need to know EXACTLY what his father did that got him into trouble – without your glossing over it using the vague description of “inappropriate behavior.” When that conversation happens, he should already understand the concept of boundaries and what taking advantage of a child really means.

If I were in your position, I would consult a licensed psychotherapist or social worker for input before trying to explain this to Jeff, because the news is going to be shocking.

Heart disease risk is not based on cholesterol alone Dear Doctor K: I am 71 years old.

My LDL cholesterol is 160, but my HDL is 122. Does my high HDL cancel out concerns about my high LDL cholesterol?

Dear Reader: I can’t give you a definite answer for a simple reason: There are very few people like you. Therefore, there are few studies of people like you. Here’s what we know.

For the vast majority of people, the higher your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, the greater your risk of heart disease. In contrast, the higher your HDL (“good”) cholesterol, the lower your risk.

What does this mean for you?

Your HDL cholesterol is very high. I’ve had only one patient with an HDL level that high. Most people have an HDL level of 40-55.

We call an HDL level “high” when it is over 60. Yours is 122. That’s very high.

Your high LDL cholesterol puts you at higher risk. But does your high HDL cholesterol cancel out that risk? There is a formula that could be used to answer that question. That is the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol. (“Total cholesterol” is the sum of LDL and HDL cholesterol in your

Your total: HDL ratio is 282:122, or 2.31. Based on data from the Framingham Heart Study, that means you are at less than half the average risk for a heart attack. So that would seem to be good news.

However, the Framingham Heart Study included very few people with an HDL cholesterol level as high as yours. So does the formula really apply to you? I just don’t know.

By way of background, LDL is a substance in your blood that carries cholesterol to plaques of atherosclerosis. As a result, the plaques swell with more cholesterol. That’s why we call LDL cholesterol “bad.”

HDL is a substance that removes cholesterol from plaques of atherosclerosis. Presumably, that’s why people with high levels of HDL have lower rates of heart attacks and strokes.

Until recently, your doctor

would have looked at your cholesterol numbers to decide whether to prescribe cholesterol-lowering statin drugs. But the most recent cholesterol guidelines, issued last year by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, take a new approach. The new guidelines focus on overall heart disease risks, rather than cholesterol numbers alone, to guide treatment.

So, what would I do if I were you? I agree with the most recent cholesterol guidelines. If you are at relatively high risk for heart trouble in the next decade, I would talk to your doctor about taking a statin drug. The guidelines define “relatively high risk” as greater than a 7.5 percent chance of getting heart disease.

This is based on all of your risk factors – including smoking, blood pressure, blood sugar, high LDL cholesterol and family members with heart disease at a relatively young age.

‘Skinny’ tough guy considers using steroids to bulk up Dr. Wallace: Last year I played football on my high school junior varsity team. I was a starter and played both offense (guard) and defense (linebacker). My coaches called me a “tough, skinny guy.”

I want to be called a tough big guy next year.

If I can gain some weight this summer, I believe I can start on the varsity team next year.

I know some weightlifters who are using steroids to bulk up. They keep telling me that if I would use steroids for nine months they guarantee that I would gain 25 pounds of pure muscle. They say that I can stop using them at any time because they are not addictive.

However, I’ve also heard that some former football players died after retiring due to the effects of steroids. Can you give me the real scoop about steroid use?

– Nameless, Houston, Tex. Dear Nameless: Several years ago the University of Michigan’s Department of Psychiatry conducted a study of steroid-taking weightlifters. The study was designed to measure the physical and emotional effects of steroid use.

The findings of the survey revealed that more than half of the weightlifters experienced three or more symptoms sufficient to classify them as being addicted to anabolic steroids, and 94 percent reported at least one symptom.

Common signs of steroid dependence included withdrawal-related fatigue, depression, anxiety, anorexia and insomnia. Of the study subjects, 8 percent reported six or more

In addition to the potential for addiction, chronic steroid use among males can also cause increased cholesterol levels, liver problems, high blood pressure, acne, extreme aggressiveness, infertility, breast enlargement and testicular atrophy.

The steroid user takes his or her chance, but it appears the odds are not good!

Dr. Wallace: I’ve been dating Bill for about two months, and I like going out with him, but I think he smokes a lot of pot. He sometimes gets “glassy-eyed,” but he never gets “tipsy” or out of control.

When I asked him how much pot he is using and how often he smokes it, he seemed surprised that I asked and said, “Don’t worry, I’m not addicted.”

I’d like to know the signs of being addicted to a drug. Can you help?

We are looking at the Rule of Seven, which tells a no-trump declarer how long to hold up his only stopper in the suit that the opponents have led. In today’s deal, North and South have six spades. Subtracting six from seven tells South to hold up his spade ace at trick one, but to take the second trick. However, is that the right play here?

When you open in no-trump, do not worry – too much! – about an unstopped suit. Here, if South opens one club and West passes (let us assume), North would respond one diamond. What would South do next? He would have no accurate rebid.

South starts with eight top tricks: one spade, three hearts and four diamonds. He needs one club trick to get home. But should he lead low to his jack or to his king? He does not have enough data to answer the question.

South needs to know how the spade suit is splitting. So he should hold up twice and take the third round. Here, declarer learns that West started with five spades. If West also holds the club ace, the contract cannot be made – South will lose one club and four spades. So declarer must play a club to his king, hoping for the best.

If it transpires that West has only four spades, South will have to guess the clubs. Wish him good luck – unless you are East or West.

Section 2. Within 15 days after its adoption, this Ordinance shall be published at least once in one or more daily or weekly newspapers published or circulated in the District, or otherwise posted in accordance with law, and also the "Public Notice" attached hereto as "Annex A" hereof, shall be included with such publication or posting.

Section 3. If, within the thirty (30) day period after publication of this Ordinance, a petition is filed in accordance with law, signed by electors of the District equal in number to ten (10) percent or more of the total number of registered voters in the district, asking that the question of levying such a 0.02% tax be submitted to the electors of the District, the question shall be submitted at the next applicable election, or at any special election called in accordance with law. Said election shall be conducted in all particulars as set forth by statutes.

Section 4. If no petition is filed in accordance with law, this District shall then be authorized to levy the tax, and the tax levy ordinance for the forthcoming fiscal year may contain a direction to the County Clerk of the County or Counties within which the District lies to levy such additional tax.

Section 5. This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage, approval, and publication according to law, and any resolutions or ordinances in conflict herewith are hereby repealed; and should any part of this Ordinance be adjudged invalid or unconstitutional, such adjudication shall affect only that part of this act specifically covered thereby, which shall be severable therefrom, and shall not affect any other provisions or parts of this act.
