OUT AND ABOUT ‘An Evening with the Board’ in Geneva GENEVA – The Geneva School District 304 Board will host “An Evening with the Board” from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday at Williamsburg Elementary School, 1812 Williamsburg Ave., Geneva.

There will be no set agenda and no formal presentations.

Those interested may drop in during the event to ask questions of board members and inform them of topics on which they would like more information.

According to a news release, the board hopes to provide information about the district to interested community members, as well as gain direction for the planning of future forums.

Rain washes away pet parade at Windmill City Festival

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – With half a dozen demonstrations scheduled Saturday afternoon at the Peg Bond Center, Julie Saloga of Batavia was hopeful more people would attend the Windmill City Festival throughout the day.

“It’s getting busier,” she said around noon.

Morning rains not only washed away visitors but also prompted organizers to cancel the 10 a.m. pet parade – the first such cancellation in at least seven years, said Kari Felkamp, director of marketing for the Batavia Park District.

“It was pouring,” Felkamp said, adding she and two others took shelter under a tent on the festival grounds in downtown Batavia.

Festival staff monitored the weather throughout the morning using smartphones, Felkamp said.

Saloga – a craft show and flea market vendor – also tracked the radar on her phone and let fellow vendors know when they could expect the rain to ease.

“Thankfully, we have product that can be out rain or shine,” Saloga said of the garden spinners she and her husband sell at their store, Windmill City Spinners & More Decor.

Other vendors, however, packed up when the rain hit, Saloga said.

As the weather cleared, Saloga hoped more vendors would resume business. She said the day’s scheduled events – including a fencing demonstration and dance performance – likely would increase attendance.

Saturday normally is Windmill City Festival’s busiest day, Felkamp said. In addition to the main stage events, activities included a Wiffle ball home run derby, a diaper derby, live band karaoke, a bags tournament, carnival rides and live music.

Although Saturday’s rain dampened turnout, Felkamp not-

ed good turnouts for Thursday and Friday. Organizers last tried a Thursday opening night in 2008, Felkamp said, but it got stormed out. This year, she said, the Batavia Chamber mixer brought a lot of people out Thursday, which saw about $3,500 in beer sales.

Windmill City Festival continued Sunday with an ice cream eating contest, a fire hose challenge and, among other activities, live music.

The Windmill City Festival committee includes representatives from the Batavia Park District, Batavia Chamber of Commerce, Batavia Depot Museum and the city of Batavia.

A final viewing will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and will proceed to Our Lady Mother of the Church, 8701 W. King was found dead July 6 on Union Pacific Railroad tracks south of Esping Park, 227 Briar Lane on Kathleen M. Geneva’s east side King about 1,200 feet near her home, according to court records.

King’s husband Shadwick, who was not mentioned in the obituary, was charged Friday with two

counts of first-degree murder in her death. The next court date for the case is July 23.

Kathleen King was an Army Reservist with the 485th Engineer Company out of Arlington Heights, according to the obituary. She graduated from Illinois State University with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and then obtained her M.B.A. from North Park University.

According to the obituary, King is survived by her three children; her father Kurt Kuester and Nancy Boyle, her sister, Kristine (fiancé Tim Casey) Kuester and brother, Michael Kuester; grandparents Jean Lane and James and Marjorie Boyle; and several aunts and uncles.

action

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Members of a Campton Hills church Sunday put their message of service into action across Kane County.

About 75 people from The Congregational United Church of Christ, 40W451 Fox Mill Blvd., Campton Hills, participated in the fourth annual Jesus Has Left the Building day. The program puts church members to work on the church grounds and six other sites in the county.

Every year, the church identifies different community projects in need of volunteers, and then church members sign up for a project of their choosing, said Wyonne Hegland, chairwoman of the program and a member of the church’s mission committee.

This year’s event included projects at the Anderson Animal Shelter in South Elgin, Corron Farm in Campton Township, Garfield Farm Museum in Campton Hills, Marklund in Geneva, the St. Charles Heritage Center in St. Charles and helping a church

member in need at home.

The Rev. Suzy Daly, the church’s associate minister, brought Jesus Has Left the Building to the church because she was familiar with a similar type of program offered at another church in Naperville, Hegland said.

Hegland said the event involves a great deal of fellowship and allows the church members to get to know one another better and their community as well.

St. Charles resident John Speck said he never had been to Corron Farm before Sunday. He decided to volunteer for the farm project with 16 other church members because he prefers to work outdoors.

Speck, a member of the church for 10 years, has participated in the church’s previous service programs at other sites. He helped dig up grass and sod around a pavilion so the group could spread mulch and do more digging nearby so ornamental prairie grasses could be planted.

“The work here goes back to the church’s message of in-

Church members step out into community for service projects creasing our love for God and neighbors,” Speck said. “You get to know the folks on a different level.”

Speck on Sunday learned more about Corron Farm from Lisa Mertz, program manager of the Campton Township Open Space program, which includes the farm. Mertz is grateful that the church’s members were there to help Sunday. The Open Space’s monthly volunteer work day Saturday was rained out.

“It means everything for us because we don’t have much staff to speak of,” she said. “[Volunteers] are our workforce.”

Over at Garfield Farms, another group from the church worked in the antique flower garden. This year has been difficult working in the garden – extra hands were needed to get the weeds under control with all the rain, said Jerome Johnson, Garfield Farms executive director.

“It’s good to see them reaching out to the community and being involved,” Johnson said of the church. “It says a lot about them.”

A comforter containing “environmental debris” and long hairs was found during a search of the Geneva home of a woman and the man accused of killing her, according to court records.

Police searched the home of Shadwick and Kathleen King in the 800 block of Oak Street in Geneva after Kathleen King, 32, was found dead July 6 on Union Pacific Railroad tracks, about 1,200 feet south of her home, according to documents read in court Friday.

Shadwick King, 47, is accused of asphyxiating his wife, Kathleen, on July 6 and placing her body on the railroad tracks. The comforter was found in a washing machine at the home, and the hairs on it appear to match Kathleen’s hair, according to the synopsis. King is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the death of his wife. King on Sunday remained in the Kane County Jail on a $1.5 million bond. The state requested King surrender his passport if he posts bail.

A female later identified as Kathleen King was spotted on the southernmost Union Pacific Railway tracks south of Esping Park, 227 Briar Lane in Geneva, at 6:37 a.m. July 6 by a train operator on another track. The state alleges she was placed there sometime between 6:15 a.m. and 6:37 a.m. because a train that passed nearby did not see her.

“It is clear that the body

was placed, was staged where it was,” said Greg Sams, a Kane County assistant state’s attorney who read the case synopsis at Shadwick King’s bond hearing Friday.

Kathleen King’s body, including the position of her head on a rail, was placed in an attempt to have her body mutilated, according to the synopsis. Cadaver dogs searching the car Shadwick King drove identified the odor of decomposition in the back seat, according to court records.

During a police interview July 6, Shadwick King said that morning he went to the gas station and a store to get groceries. When he was reinterviewed Tuesday, he said the same thing, but that he also drove around “for a bit,” court records said. Surveillance video showed Shadwick King at a Shell gas station at about 7:45 a.m. July 6, and then he did not reappear on video until about 8:55 a.m. that day, when he went to the Jewel-Osco store in St. Charles.

Sams told Associate Judge Clint Hull during the bond hearing that this is not the timeframe where something was done to the body.

Earlier that day, Shadwick King saw his wife texting a man so he took her phone and began texting the man himself, according to the case synopsis. Investigators think Kathleen King was still alive at 5:15 a.m. July 6 because she sent the man a Facebook message saying that the recent text messages sent from her phone weren’t written by her.

‘Just one of those days’ for Cougars in loss

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A between-innings trivia question revealed that the last time the Cougars perched 30 games above .500 before Saturday was 2004.

Managing five hits in a 7-0 loss to Beloit brought the club to the less ripe figure of 29 games over. Players know that hardly means their success is history.

“We’ve got a doubleheader [Sunday], and I think that [Sunday], we’re going to work as a team, you know,” third baseman Jeimer Candelario said. “When we work as a team, everything is going good.”

It wasn’t as if the Cougars – still the Midwest League’s best club at 15-6 in the second half and 60-31 overall – lost that camaraderie against Be-

loit (5-16, 36-55).

Snappers left-hander Matt Stalcup’s resiliency added up, though, as did his teammates’ persistence. Beloit scored five runs in the final three innings, including twice with two outs in the ninth.

Kane County loaded the bases with two outs in its own half of the ninth but was unable to score. It had Stalcup on the ropes earlier in the game, but he consistently pitched out of jams.

Two weeks after the Cougars reached him for six runs, eight hits and two homers in 4⅔ innings, Stalcup recovered admirably, scattering four hits in 5⅓ innings. He walked one and struck out three.

“He established in with his fastball, and we had a couple chances, but he made some good pitches when he needed to and their defense played a

good game,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said.

Candelario contributed one of the Cougars’ top efforts in defeat, going 2 for 3 with a double and a walk.

An undrafted free agent of the parent Cubs who’s still just 20, Candelario extended his hitting streak to six games as he continues to work on solidifying his offensive game.

The Cougars’ third baseman for much of last season, Candelario opened 2014 with Advanced-A Daytona but was transferred to Class-A Kane County last month after batting .193 in 62 games.

“You’ve just got to work hard every day. If it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen,” Candelario said. “You’ve just got to work hard and … every day be the best player you can.”

First baseman Jacob Rogers had the other hit, singling to lead off the ninth.

Righty Tyler Skulina took the loss, allowing two runs and five hits in five innings.

Gerardo Concepcion and Jose Arias combined to allow five runs – four earned – and seven hits in four innings of relief.

Ominous skies threatened overhead for much of the night, but the game was played without interruption.

Rain or not, the Cougars and Snappers already knew they faced a doubleheader Sunday, the most grueling and compact part of a five-game, fourday series.

“That’s going to tax any team, especially a pitching staff,” said Snappers pitching coach Craig Lefferts, a former major league left-hander who the Cubs drafted in 1980.

“We’ll have to just deal with it and give it our best shot.”

Better to play two, seven-inning games just a few weeks removed from the AllStar break than, say, a month from now.

“Maybe if it was mid-August, I would have a different answer, but right now the guys seem to be pretty good,” Johnson said.

To that end, Johnson dismissed Saturday’s loss as a casualty of baseball’s law of averages. The Cougars still are 36-11 at home and haven’t lost a series since the Snappers earned a three-game sweep from June 13 to 15.

“It’s baseball. You have games like this. It happens.

It’s going to happen. It’s going to happen again,” Johnson said. “And these guys are consistent and it’s just one of those days.”

Teravainen could start season with Rockford

By SETH GRUEN sgruen@suntimes.com Veteran Brad Richards figures to be a place-holder as the Blackhawks’ second-line center. The team hopes Teuvo Teravainen eventually will make that spot his own.

One would think that bringing in Richards, 34, to occupy the most scrutinized spot in the Hawks’ lineup would take some of the pressure off a young prospect such as Teraveinen, 19. But Teravainen apparently doesn’t pay any attention to that stuff – or wouldn’t admit he does after the first day of Hawks prospect camp Sunday.

“I don’t think [about] those things too much, just focus on myself and try to practice hard,” Teravainen said. “I play where they put me and just try to get good time here and work hard.”

Teravainen’s ultimate destination appears clear; where he will start next season is the question.

The 18th overall selection in the 2012 draft, Teravainen made his NHL debut March 25 and won all seven faceoffs he took. But he failed to score a point in three games with the Hawks and was sent to Rockford, where he scored twice in five regular-season games.

As Teravainen eyes the NHL, he isn’t like many of the other prospects who were on hand Sunday. He needs to put on weight. He spent some time leading up to camp in his native Finland, where he estimated he was able to put on “a couple of kilos,” which is about 4½ pounds. He plans to spend the rest of the summer leading up to the season in Chicago.

“Just takes some time, and I’m just a young kid,” Teravainen said of adding the strength he’ll need to survive an NHL season. “It will come.”

The time off gave Teravainen an opportunity to recharge, but he was glad to be back on the ice. He said it was nice to work with other prospects, many of whom are his age or older. It’s the beginning of an offseason in which he hopes to take his game to another level.

“I feel good, but it’s been time without hockey, so I think my body needs hockey,” Teravainen said. “I’m ready [for] this season. I can’t wait. I can make [it to] a different level. I can play better.”

GENEVA – Ben Carhart and Kyle Schwarber shifted to different positions rather conventionally for the second game Sunday of the Cougars’ doubleheader against Beloit.

After playing second base in a 3-1 victory in the opener, Carhart served as designated hitter in Game 2. Schwarber moved from DH to left field for the nightcap, a 6-5 Kane County win.

Providing the requisite wackiness of every twin bill, one of the most mobile Cougars went from left field to coach first base. Trey Martin stole a club record five bases in a game last month. On Sunday, he collected teammates’ batting gloves after manager Mark Johnson’s ejection in the third inning of Game 2 prompted further shuffling outside the lines.

“I was just the closest one to a helmet, the first base coach helmet,” Martin said.

Then I got it and went out there.”

Almost as matter-of-factly, the Cougars (17-6 second half, 62-31 overall) maintained the Midwest League’s best record.

Taiwanese right-hander Jen-Ho Tseng captained the effort, breezing through Beloit in 87 pitches in the opener while spacing one run, three hits and seven strikeouts in a complete-game seven innings.

Beloit designated hitter Matt Chapman’s solo home run on the first pitch of the seventh marked Tseng’s lone blemish in the longest outing of his career.

“This is my first time to pitch seven innings, that long, as a professional player,” Tseng said through translator Fox Sung, “and I wish I can keep throwing that many innings in the future, because the more innings I pitch, that means I can help out the team to win the game.”

Now 4-0 with a 2.74 ERA, Tseng mixed a low-90s fastball with an array of breaking pitches.

Sunday’s sweep assured a series victory in a five-game set that concludes at noon todau. While Beloit (6-16, 3656) scuffles, several Cougars enter the finale on a tear.

Third baseman Jeimer Candelario, who saw a sixgame hitting streak end in Game 1, blasted two home runs and had four RBIs in the nightcap. His walk-off solo shot against Snappers righty Tyler Vail rescued a potentially sour ending.

The Cougars grabbed a 5-1 lead on Candelario’s threerun shot in the fifth, but the bullpen was unable to keep the lead.

Johnson saw both home runs with his young son, Will, retreating to the press box and later the stands after his ejection.

Dear Abby: We were visiting my daughter and her husband when their 3-year-old, “Bethany,” entered our room and rummaged through our medications.

The door to the guest room was closed and the medications had been placed on a desk. Of course, everyone thought she had ingested some, so they rushed her to the ER. We were fortunate that nothing was found in her system.

My son-in-law thinks we should help pay the medical bills. I have sent several hundred dollars, but he is asking for more.

Bethany is an only child, and they allow her free reign of the house.

I have other grandchildren who are even younger, and none of them would dream of touching something that wasn’t theirs.

It has been almost a year since the incident, and they still haven’t taught her to respect and leave things alone that are not hers.

My daughter is a professional and her husband works from home, which concerns me because he isn’t as strict as I feel is necessary.

Are we obligated to help with more of her medical expenses?

John Wesley, an 18th-century English preacher, said, “Once in seven years I burn all my sermons; for it is a shame if I cannot write better sermons now than I did seven years ago.”

Last week I mentioned the Rule of Seven. In a no-trump contract, when a defender leads a suit in which declarer has only one toptrick stopper (usually the ace), the Rule of Seven tells declarer how long to hold up that stopper. He subtracts from seven the total number of cards his side has in the suit and holds up for that number of rounds.

When declarer is only worried about the suit led, the Rule of Seven works fine. But it needs careful handling.

In this deal, how should South plan the play in three no-trump after West leads the spade two?

The Rule of Seven is primarily useful when the opponents have eight cards in their suit dividing 5-3. Declarer holds up his ace for two rounds (seven minus five is two), so that the defender with the long suit can cash his two remaining winners only if he has an entry.

What if their eight-card fit is breaking 4-4? Then there is no point in holding up, because declarer cannot break the opponents’ communication in the suit. They will always get three tricks (unless declarer can immediately run for home).

In this deal, if South takes the first trick and drives out the diamond ace, he loses only one diamond and three spades. But if he ducks his spade ace at trick one, East might notice the interesting heart situation and shift to the heart king. Then South will lose one spade, three hearts and one diamond to end down one.
