Shadwick King left to go to the bank for an unspecified reason at 4:45 a.m. Sunday and returned home at 5:15 a.m., Sam said. At that time, a Facebook message was sent from Kathleen King to the other man saying the recent text messages sent from her phone weren’t from her.

Shadwick King told police that Kathleen King usually goes running at about 6 a.m.

Kane County Coroner Rob Russell on Thursday said King looked like she was wearing running clothes when she was found on the railroad tracks.

Police interviewed Shadwick King on Sunday and Tuesday, the day he began to change his story about what he did on Sunday, accord-

ing to court records. He was booked into the Kane County Jail on Tuesday night, according to online records.

King, as of Thursday afternoon, had not been charged, according to records and police. A person may be held in custody 72 hours before being charged. King’s only previous criminal history is an arrest in 1986 for criminal trespassing, Sams said in court, not indicating where the arrest took place.

Before Hull set bail, King assured him that he wasn’t a flight risk.

“I don’t want to leave my three kids,” he said to Hull.

“I’m not going anywhere.”

King was sworn in and took a seat in a chair while Hull questioned him about his assets, of which King said there were few.

He mentioned that he owes more on his home than what it is worth.

Hull determined that King qualified to have a public defender appointed. He set King’s next court date for July 23.

• SNAKES Continued from page 2 By the time we hung up, the woman was, if not entirely pro-snake, at least less anti-snake than she was when she called. Best of all, she agreed to leave the snake to its own devices, minus the sandbox-toy hiding places, which she vowed to lock up in a storage bin.

Earlier this week, I had the good fortune to encounter a fox snake enjoying its own version of all-youcan-eat – a young 13-lined ground squirrel that clearly had been caught unawares alongside a mowed path in a large, grassy field. The snake had its jaws wide open; not “unhinged,” as it is sometimes described, but spread to 150 degrees, as the extra bones at the back of the jaw extended.

To help move the meal along, the snake made use of its unique lower jaws.

Unlike human jaws, which are fused together at the chin, snakes’ lower jaws are separate.

They can be moved independently, millimeters at a time, to slowly “walk” the prey down the animal’s throat.

So engaged, the snake at that moment was as vulnerable as the prey it was engulfing. I couldn’t help but wonder, what would happen if a hawk swooped down, or a coyote pounced?

I didn’t have to speculate for long.

The wild snake, clearly accustomed to dining and dashing (slurping and slithering?) in a matter of minutes finished its big snack and then quickly disappeared back into the tall grass.

No rattles, no fangs, no venom, just 100 percent fox snake, doing what it’s meant to do.

GENEVA – A 47-year-old Geneva man was charged Friday with two counts of first-degree murder in the death of his wife, who was found Sunday on railroad tracks on the city’s east side.

Shadwick R. King, of the 800 block of Oak Street in Geneva, is being held on a $1.5 million bond, which was set Friday morning by Associate Judge Clint Hull.

King is accused of killing his wife, Kathleen King, 32, on Sunday and then placing her body on railroad tracks near their home on Geneva’s east side, according to a synopsis of the case read in court by Greg Sams, a Kane County assistant state’s attorney. King’s cause of death was ruled to be asphyxiation, Sams said.

King died sometime after 5 a.m. Sunday, according to the case synopsis. She was spotted at 6:37 a.m. by a train operator on the southernmost Union Pacific Railway tracks south of Esping Park, 227 Briar Lane in Geneva. King was dead upon the 6:50 a.m. arrival of police officers to the scene, according to the Geneva Police Department.

Shadwick King, who appeared Friday handcuffed in court while wearing an orange jail shirt and pants, spoke quietly and replied “yes” when the judge asked him if he understood his right to an attorney and a trial by jury.

King’s motive is the fact that his wife was having some type of relationship with another man, according to the case synopsis.

Batavians enjoy annual Windmill City Festival Crowds gather for live music, food and rides

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Crew Pircon could not get enough of the rides on Friday at the Windmill City Festival.

The 2-year-old went down a large slide twice, as well as two car rides, and he was just getting started.

Crew, his mother Marin Sinclair and his grandfather Roger Sinclair, all of Batavia, were among the early crowd at the event, held every year at the Batavia Riverwalk in the city’s downtown area.

The festival, which began this year on Thursday and continues through Sunday, features a carnival, food booths, a beer garden, live music, performances and several other activities.

“I just like that it’s a nice little community event that everybody can go to,” Marin Sinclair said. “I can entertain [Crew] and get him out of the house – that’s the most important thing.”

Batavian Jennifer Fox said her daughter Grace, 12, enjoys the rides and socializing with her friends at the festival.

Bob Spiewak said the weather on Friday was not too hot, so it made the festival all the more enjoyable.

Cat recovering after run-in with car Driver who hit Mittens helped get him aid

By NATALIE WICKMAN nwickman@shawmedia.com GENEVA – In an unlikely recovery, a Geneva resident’s tabby cat is alive with a major leg injury after being hit by a car July 2.

The cat is Mittens, an orange and white polydactyl whose thumbs are large and prominent. He belongs to Rebecca Grosso, magazine coordinator at Shaw Media, who said he is both an inside and outside cat who is friendly and mellow. She also describes him as tolerable since he lives with two young children.

On the night of July 2, Grosso said her son noticed police cars at Renaux Boulevard and Route 64 and thought a dog was hit by a car. When Mittens didn’t come home the next day, Grosso suspected the cat was involved in the previous night’s accident and called the police, who confirmed her suspicion.

Mittens’ recovery is due, in large part, to Emily Watts of Geneva, who hit the cat and took him to the hospital.

“I saw [Mittens] dart out in front of me, and it felt like I hit a stick,” Watts said. “I took my car and blocked him from

oncoming traffic, I just put my hazard lights on.”

Watts said she called police officers, who went to the scene and gave her three options: give Mittens over to their care, take him to the hospital herself or leave him by the side of the road and let nature take its course. “[Mittens] was bleeding out of the mouth, and I honestly didn’t think he was even going to make it to the hospital,” Watts said.

While in the hospital, Grosso said Mittens was hooked up to an IV and had an ultrasound to check for internal bleeding, of which there was none.

He did sustain a concussion but recovered, leaving most of the injury in his left hind leg.

After staying in the hospital for three days, Mittens was transferred to the St. Charles Veterinary Clinic and went under the care of veterinarian Kim Labak. “[Mittens] started feeling a lot better once we started getting him on medications and antibiotics; fortunately he didn’t have broken bones,” Labak said. “There is permanent ligament damage in his leg, but his life is saved and we warded off infection.”

Veterinarian James Miles of the St. Charles Veterinary Clinic said he suspects three ligaments were torn around Mittens’ knee, which leaves the option to either amputate the leg or preform surgery to stabilize it.

“You only need three legs to be sturdy,” Labak said. “[Threelegged cats] are very common because it is harder to rehabilitate and do surgery on little cat bones.”

Labak said her main goal is to do what it takes for Mittens to return to his normal activities. “[Mittens] is worth every penny,” Grosso said. “I can’t give him up.”

Questions remain about coroner’s budget

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The future of the coroner’s building – and its closed morgue – remained uncertain Friday as Kane County Board members considered Coroner Rob Russell’s budget request for 2015.

Board Chairman Chris Lauzen, along with members of the Judicial and Public Safety Committee, were reluctant to discuss long- and short-term plans during a discussion in which Russell was absent.

Russell was called away from the meeting before he could present. Ken Shepro, an attorney acting as his financial consultant, spoke to the

committee instead.

Preliminary numbers call for a budget of $949,547, which includes 5 percent nonunion staff raises and increases for pathologist fees. It is a 9.4 percent increase over the 2013 budget, which was used as a comparison.

Shepro noted the budget summary doesn’t take into account the arrangement with the DuPage County Coroner’s Office. Forensic operations have been outsourced to DuPage County since mold was found in the Kane County morgue last month.

Russell has said he intends to seek direction from the committee about his options: investing in new equip-

ment for the existing facility or beginning plans for a new building, which could lead to a prolonged relationship with DuPage.

The cost of using DuPage County’s facilities for one year is estimated at $83,050, but savings on morgue supplies could reduce the expense by $50,000, Shepro said.

Meanwhile, capital cost estimates are $75,000 for a new freezer and cooler; $42,000 for a used X-ray machine; $15,000 for a key card security system and unknown costs for an HVAC system, mold remediation, and the demolition and construction related to the new equipment.

In a written report to the

committee, Russell said Don Biggs, the county’s operations staff executive, and representatives from Mechanical Inc. recently visited his office.

“However, the conversation dealt only with the cleanup [remediation] and removal, not a complete plan to reuse this facility,” Russell said.

“Significant financial and policy concerns remain.”

Board member Doug Scheflow, R-Elgin, said he would support giving the coroner a small budget increase. Lauzen, however, noted Russell last year agreed to a budget of $843,000 for three years.

The coroner’s budget was the last of 13 proposals presented to the committee.

The state’s attorney’s office is proposing a nearly $9.2 million budget, up from about $9 million in 2014. It seeks to add two employees – an assistant state’s attorney for the civil division, and a bilingual investigator for the Child Advocacy Center.

The sheriff’s office also budgeted for an additional employee, a deputy. Sheriff Pat Perez said his force was reduced from 95 to 90 deputies when the economy started to sour, and his current staff consists of 85 deputies.

The total increase in the public safety budget is $362,877, or 3.27 percent. Revenues are projected to increase by $535,292.

In the heat of July, while most kids give their brains a break from school, there is a small classroom tucked away in a corner of Geneva High School where first- through eighth-graders participate in a four-day chess camp.

In between periods of silence, complete with brows furrowed in concentration and exuberant outbursts fueled by excitement, a father-son team teaches the basic elements and strategy of chess.

Geneva High School English teacher Steve Whitman and his father, Rich Whitman, a retired elementary school teacher from Douglas MacArthur Elementary School, spent Monday through Thursday teaching their students chess strategy.

Steve Whitman said the goal of the camp was to teach kids the basic elements of chess and give the kids a challenge. He pointed out the important, practical applications learned from chess.

Committee looks at revenue potential of charging station Report: 302 gallons of gas saved in 510 charges

By EOIN COTTRELL ecottrell@shawmedia.com The Kane County Energy and Environmental Committee convened Thursday and reviewed a midyear summary of the electric vehicle charging station located at the Kane County Courthouse.

A single charging station was installed in April 2012 and upgraded with two plugs in December 2013. The report noted that since the installation, 302 gallons of gas have been saved in 510 charges. The report also noted that users increased from 48 in 2013 to 163 in 2014.

the charging stations. Discussion centered around whether users should be charged for kilowatts per hour, hours charging or a flat fee.

The midyear summary gave potential revenue ideas for the charging station. In order to break even, the county would need to charge 32 cents per kwh or 40 cents per hour.

The summary also showed that a $1 per hour fee would give the county $740 in profit, and 50 cents per kwh would result in $278 in profit.

Committee member Michael Donahue, R-Geneva, said he is a “huge supporter and big proponent” of the charging program. He also

said he does not see the need to start charging citizens for using the charging station because he said the costs are “pretty minimal.”

The charging station has a current annual operation cost of $493.

Donahue said he would support free access for another six months to help increase use and educate the community about the station and its benefits.

Committee Chair Kurt Kojzarek, R-Gilberts, said he would be interested in exploring charging citizens per hour.

No motions were made to implement a user fee for the future.

GENEVA – Geneva police charged 17 people at two underage drinking parties. The mayor’s daughter was among those arrested, according to police reports.

Police came to a party about 10:30 p.m. June 27 at a house on the 2900 block of Husking Peg Lane, where 10 were charged with underage drinking.

Nine were charged under local ordinance violations, but the mayor’s daughter, Florence C. Burns, 20, of the 1600 block of Kaneville Road, is facing state charges of underage drinking. She is scheduled to appear in branch court on Tuesday.

Burns was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol a year ago and pleaded guilty, court records show.

She had to complete 100 hours of community service, among other requirements, and has a court date of July 30 still pending on that case, records show.

Mayor Kevin Burns did not respond to a request for comment, and her mother, Terry Emma, executive director of the Geneva History Museum, said she would not comment.

The others charged were Katlin A. Johnson, 20, of the 2900 block of Husking Peg Lane where the party was held; Stephan A. Beavaus, 20, of the 53000 block of Briana Court, Shelby, Michigan; Andrew Brooks, 18, of the 2800 block of Randall Ridge Court, Elgin and

Kane County close to $6M deal for court case system Software would manage documents for city officials

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County is on the verge of entering into a multimillion-dollar contract with a Texas-based company that will provide the county with a new electronic court case document management system.

Getting to this point is years in the making, as Chief Information Officer Roger Fahnestock said the project dates to at least 2010.

Officials at the various offices associated with the court system – including the county’s chief judge, state’s attorney, public defender

and circuit court clerk – have pushed for the project for years to replace the courts’ current systems, which they said are outdated and dysfunctional.

The court case management system was the subject of at least 25 Judicial/Public Safety Strategic Planning and Technology Commission meetings, Fahnestock said, and the vendor selection process included presentations from four companies and site visits for the finalists.

The commission selected Tyler Technologies of Plano, Texas. Negotiations with the company took about two months, Fahnestock said.

The negotiated price is $6.025 million and includes data conversion, customization requests and, he said, free maintenance for one year.

He noted the $6.025 million is only for the software license and maintenance. The proposed agreement with Tyler Technologies also will include project-related travel expenses and a 10 percent project contingency for a total of $6,866,582.

The Judicial and Public Safety Committee recommended approval Friday.

Fahnestock expects the 18-month implementation schedule will begin in September.

He surrounded himself with the people, life and competitive sports he loved. After his days of competitive baseball, he devoted his athletic talents to playing pool and was an avid golfer.

A consummate “gamer,” he loved to compete but loved the camaraderie that came with the “game” even more.

People knew him best for his athleticism, competitive spirit and staunch devotion to family and friends. People loved him for his sense of humor and a willingness to help whoever was in need in whatever way he could. An electrician by profession, Don also was a true tradesman. He was adept at general construction and maintenance – roofing, carpentry, electrical and painting among others. He often used his abilities for the benefit of others.

Oh give us a home, where coyotes don’t roam ...

Coyotes – they are here. And not all Kane County residents feel comfortable with their presence.

During a Geneva Committee of the Whole meeting in June, residents spoke to aldermen about how some coyotes in the area are becoming used to people and are no longer as afraid of humans as they once were.

Residents of Geneva’s Fisher Farms and Westhaven subdivisions, in particular, want officials to do something about aggressive coyotes.

Options should be explored.

In the past, Geneva has looked for its residents to coexist with coyotes, a stance recommended by wildlife experts. People have been instructed not to feed the animals, to lock up their garbage and not to let their dogs or cats outside unattended, according to the city of Geneva website.

“Most coyotes are leery of people and tend to stay away from humans,” the website states. “However, like any wild animal, they can be unpredictable and dangerous. While attacks on humans are very rare, young children should never be left unattended.”

The site goes on to state that, “When coyotes find ... food sources in residential areas, they may lose their fear of humans and eventually test both people and pets as prey.”

Coyotes can be found throughout Kane County, but Geneva seems to be a particularly troubling area for more aggressive coyotes.

Residents of Geneva have described coyotes approaching them as they have walked their dogs, and some say their dogs have been attacked.

So what can be done?

Options could include trapping dominant coyotes and euthanizing them, or teaching the community about how to effectively “haze” coyotes, which means yelling or making loud noises to scare the animals away. Opinions differ as to how effective those methods are.

Officials said police do not respond to coyote grievances and neither does Kane County Animal Control, unless the complaints involve actual attacks or rabies.

But perhaps there is a high enough need for a local entity to become proficient in handling coyote control and disturbances. At a minimum, an organization could step up to host regular informational sessions about coyotes and how humans can deal with them.

In the meantime, residents need to be vigilant.

Those with small animals must take responsibility for their safety, and small children should not be left alone in areas that coyotes frequent.

Geneva aldermen have asked city staff to research the topic of coyotes. Residents should stay tuned for details.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR RAISING MINIMUM WAGE To the Editor: The president has advocated raising the minimum wage to $10.10. He has asserted that the current minimum wage of seven and a quarter is woefully inadequate to live on. That amounts to $15,080 a year.

Republicans have argued that a raise would destroy jobs. Past experience indicates that it might have a very small effect on employment. Why couldn’t special provisions be made for small companies that couldn’t afford it?

Obviously, the Republican party is not interested in the poor. Why else would Speaker of the House John Boehner not bring it up for a vote?

industry. Wal-Mart, the largest company in the country, and McDonald’s are examples of this.

The CEO of McDonald’s has stated that he would support a raise in the minimum wage.

Where does Wal-Mart stand on this? Millions of minimum wage workers are getting by on federally funded food stamps.

Thus, we as taxpayers, are in effect subsidizing these highly profitable companies.

Gov. Quinn has advocated raising the minimum wage in Illinois. His Republican opponent, who many say is a billionaire, has said the minimum wage should be cut in Illinois by $1. That’s easy to say for someone who thinks all we have to do in Illinois is cut taxes to solve the unemployment problem.

A raise in the minimum wage would actually reduce the federal deficit since millions of people would no longer be eligible for food stamps. Furthermore, a raise would help to stimulate growth in the economy since millions would be able to spend more on necessities.

Lefferts turned tables on Cubs Beloit pitching coach Craig Lefferts won three games as a Cubs left-hander in 1983.

His biggest legacy to the club that drafted him came when he pitched for the other side.

Lefferts earned the victory for the San Diego Padres against the Cubs in Games 4 and 5 of the 1984 NLCS. Five years later, he helped dispatch the Cubs in the NLCS again with the San Francisco Giants.

“That was special for me in both of those playoffs,” Lefferts said.

The Cubs traded Lefferts, predominantly a reliever in his 12-year major league career, after the 1983 season. The change of scenery was nothing new to the military brat, whose father was an Air Force pilot.

Born in Germany, where he spent his first six months, Lefferts moved several times as a child and also spent three years in Japan. Still, he cultivated his love for baseball – if not his skills – stateside. Lefferts’ parents did not allow him to play organized ball until he was 12 because of his asthma.

“I stuck around until I got better,” Lefferts said. “I always believed that I could do it. Even though other people told me I wasn’t good enough, I used that as motivation. And eventually worked my way to the big leagues and had a good career.”

Make it snappy Friday’s game took 2:20 to play and marked the Cougars’ fourth straight win against Beloit after six losses to open 2014.

GO, GO, GO Cougars homer happy on ‘Christmas In July’ night

No matter their stance on this most wonderful cliche, fans attending Friday’s theme night series opener between the Cougars and Beloit didn’t go wanting for solo home runs.

The clubs combined for six in Kane County’s 6-3 win, which actually fell five round-trippers shy of the single-game Midwest League record.

As it was, the Cougars were plenty happy with their homer haul, which included two from second baseman Ben Carhart and one each from first baseman Jacob Rogers and center fielder Jake Hannemann.

Hannemann and Carhart reached Beloit righty Junior Mendez – who surrendered all four homers – for back-to-back shots in the sixth.

“All year, we talked about how our team never hits home runs,” Carhart said.

“The pitchers all give us crap for it. Kind of say, ‘Oh, you guys can do it in [batting practice], not in the game.’ Yeah, that was

Brown continued a recent whirlwind tour that saw him travel from Short-A Boise to Double-A Tennessee, back to Boise and then on to the Class-A Cougars within about a two-week span. He made his fourth straight start Friday in what proved to be his first MWL game without a hit.

Naturally, Brown homered Tuesday and Thursday in wins at Quad Cities.

‘It’s been pretty crazy. It’s been fun, though, you know. Just kind of traveling all over the country,” Brown said. “The one thing that stays true is you’ve still got to throw the ball over the plate. That’s a constant. It’s the same routine at every park we go to, so that’s been able to keep me grounded a little bit, I think, and it’s helped, definitely, a lot.”

Beloit (5-15, 35-55) ultimately fell victim to the Cougars’ familiarity with Mendez.

Facing Kane County for the third time in 2014, Mendez wasn’t as effective with his sinker as he had been in past outings.

Entering Friday, he had allowed four home runs in his past 46 innings. Armed with an aggressive approach, the Cougars doubled that total in six innings.

“He was just leaving them over the middle of the plate tonight,” Carhart said.

Cougars right-hander Duane Underwood earned a victory for the third straight decision, navigating solo shots from BA Vollmuth and Luis Baez in an otherwise solid six innings.

For third-year camper Joe Kleist, scrimmaging with the team and swimming are his favorite activities. Kleist participates in the Batavia Youth Football program and plays a mix of quarterback and wide receiver.

“I’m learning how to roll back and throw a nice spiral,” he said. “I’ll take away from this camp how the [older players] play the game and practice.”

Above all, there’s something about the camp that brings not only the participants, but former players year after year.

ball coach Mike Theriault coached in the Junior Bulldog camp as a player several years ago. Because of the experience, he knows how big of an impact the camp has on the young players.

“It’s really evolved to almost every kid in Batavia does [the camp] or wants to,” he said. “Most of the kids who are coaching now in high school, were in this camp when they were young.

It’s cool to see [how the roles have changed].”

Players such as sophomore middle linebacker Conner Stejskal remembers looking up to the older kids helping him throughout his time participating.

“We try to help out as much as we can with the community,” he said. “It’s nice to see them grow throughout the whole week, and seeing how they learn from mistakes in game situations.”

The impact is surely no-

ticed by parents watching their kids compete and interact with the older players, especially to Heather DeBaun.

Her son, Max DeBaun, has participated in the camp for three years.

“He likes the interaction with the high school football players,” she said. “They do a great job with not only teaching them football, but [making it] a community event.

He participated last summer as well, and got to interact with the team who won the state championship…he was so excited.”

With a large community presence and a state title to boot, expectations for the Batavia program are at an all-time high, but for this week, the focus remained on the campers.

“We’ll definitely keep doing the program as long as we can,” DeBaun said. “They’ve done a great job organizing the camp and activities.”

BATAVIA – For youth football players at Batavia’s Junior Bulldog camp, the chance to play alongside their Friday night heroes is special, especially considering they learn to play the game they love from the reigning Class 6A state champions.

For the 17th year in a row, the program hosted the weeklong camp, gathering at Prairie Path Park with Batavia youth football players from first through seventh grade.

Campers from first to sixth grade play touch football and compete in drills, while seventh graders prepare for tackle football.

The idea for the camp originated from a friend of coach Dennis Piron, as he saw the camp being put on at another high school, but Piron never thought the camp would grow

the way it has.

“It’s amazing how sincerely our players interact with the kids in the community,” Piron said. “They don’t [participate] grudgingly. I don’t have to beg kids to come help…it’s an unusual sight seeing the boys interacting with third and fourth graders, and having fun doing it.”

Usually Dennis Piron the varsity players are the ones being coached, but for this week, the roles switched, as they each had a small team of campers, and would lead them through drills and mentor them.

While the camp is centered on developing fundamentals and growing as a young player, the opportunity to go swimming or take in a movie with the team are

Batavia sweeps Windmill Whirl

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Batavia residents won both the men’s and women’s divisions of the Windmill Whirl 5K run Friday.

Alex DiVerde, a 20-year old Bradley University student, won the men’s race with a time of 17:56.07 Finishing sixth overall and first in the women’s division was 13-year-old Daphne Kolody, an incoming freshman at Batavia who completed the course in 19:53.81.

This year also marked the first time in several years that the 5K run, which is part of the Windmill City Festival, was held on a Friday, as the event was held on Saturday morning.

“We move it back to Friday night so it can be even more family oriented than in the past,” said Rachel Schmit, the race coordinator. “In doing that, kids have the ability to watch their parents. They also have entertainment . You have the whole family down here so that was really the thought process moving it back to Friday night. It’s just as well, as we can also include walking as a less competitive type of race.”

“I’m from the area and I’ve always come down to the Windmill Fest. I’ve run in the race for the past a couple of years,” said DiVerde, who runs cross country and track at Bradley. “My family is a bunch of runners, so it’s a fun thing to do and Batavia does a really good job of putting it on.”

“I got first place in the female division last year, too, and this year I got first again, so I’m really happy,” said Kolody, who plans to compete in cross country this fall. “I actually got a minute better this year.”

More than 120 runners and walkers ranging in age from 7 to 66 competed in the race held in downtown Batavia.

Medals were awarded to the top three finishers in each of eight age brackets for both male and female runners.

Mike Konopinski finished second (18:04.09) and Andrew Buss (18:16.65) took third in the men’s competition.

In the women’s race, Janet Leonard came in second (22:54.62), while Denise Trimble captured third place (23:17.97).

“Just attacking the zone, mostly. Just the fastball, being dominant, trying to locate well,” Underwood said. “Today, I missed two pitches and I paid for it. Other than that, I’ve just been trying to attack the zone.”

The night also featured a caroling contest and the familiar postgame fare of fireworks and kids run the bases set to Christmas music.

Before finding himself in a makeshift North Pole for a night, Brown experienced the holiday spirit from his host family in Boise.

His travel itinerary had grown so dizzying that his luggage still was in transit by the time he made his return trip to Boise from Tennessee.

with the Smokies but was the odd man out after some roster shuffling associated with the Cubs’ trade of Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to Oakland last week.

By the time Brown was ready to join the Cougars, his host family had purchased a few new shirts and pairs of khaki shorts.

“It was awesome. I didn’t ask them to do that, and they just went ahead and did it,” Brown said.

“That’s the thing about this game, is there’s so many good people that make it possible to have minor league baseball, you know.”

What I take away is that in 7-on-7s, it’s not about winning, necessarily. It’s about getting the timing down. Getting the routes done. Getting everything done correctly.

And by then, when you get to the season, it should pay off.

Because that’s what ultimately matters. It doesn’t matter if you’re just throwing deep balls every single time. It’s more about getting the timing down for the correct routes and displaying that in the season. So, that’s what I feel.

Marmion senior running back-linebacker Sean Campbell is eager to increase his role from last fall, when he described himself as a “key reserve.” As the Cadets await kickoff of the 2014 football season next month, Campbell knows coach Dan Thorpe and Co. will rely on him to be a leader, a prospect he doesn’t shy away from. Speaking with Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley for the latest installment of the Weekend Chit-chat, Campbell sizes up Marmion’s spring routine and his outlook for the fall.

A closer look at the Cougars

GENEVA – The Fifth Third Bank Ballpark gates still were an hour from opening Friday when Beloit hitting coach Lloyd Turner surveyed the empty stands.

His first and fondest memory of the Cougars’ home remained close at hand. All Turner had to do was close his eyes, and the place was packed.

That’s how Turner encountered what was then Elfstrom Stadium in September 2003, an Oakland A’s prospect sent from Advanced-A Modesto (Calif.) to join the Cougars for the Midwest League playoffs.

He appeared in all four games of a series Lloyd Turner Kane County lost, 3-1, to Clinton, then commenced clinging to the memory of the only minor league action he saw in Illinois.

“That was the first time in my professional career where I was going to be able to compete for something that actually meant something to a team that was actually playing well,” Turner said. “And to know that I was going to be able to come here and hopefully help in some form or fashion, it was a memorable time for me.”

Plenty has happened to both Turner and the Cougars since. For one, Kane County switched affiliations from Oakland to Kansas City before the 2011 season, then aligned with the Cubs beginning in 2013.

An infielder-outfielder hybrid, Turner played in the Oakland system through 2007, reaching Triple-A Sacramento for 36 games that season.

The A’s drafted him in the 16th round in 2002, and he still appreciates their patience. In 2004, he hit .292 and drove in 51 runs for Modesto in 125 games, but was unable to recapture that consistency after that.

Charting the King Several Cougars followed Friday’s breaking news of NBA superstar LeBron James’ return to the Cleveland Cavaliers from Miami, where he spent the past four seasons and won two titles.

Right-hander Tyler Skulina – a native of Strongsville, Ohio, south of Cleveland – assured teammates that not every Cavaliers fan burned his or her James jersey four years ago.

Walking up to grab some food from the pregame spread, first base coach Chris Gutierrez joked he would buy his James jersey today.

Still just 34, Turner spent five seasons with independent league clubs in Pennsylvania and New Jersey before reconnecting with the A’s organization.

He and current Snappers manager Rick Magnante and pitching coach Craig Lefferts were with Short-A Vermont in 2013.

Although the Snappers have struggled this season, Turner figures the tutelage of Magnante, 66, and Lefferts, 56, will be beneficial as he works to ascend the system as a coach. The age gap hasn’t been an issue.

“You know, you’d think it would be that way, that they would be bossy. That they would I guess, kind of in a sense undermine you because of your age,” Turner said.

“But it’s absolutely not that way.

“Granted, they’ve been around the game a lot longer than me and they’ve probably experienced way

more than I’ll ever experience in baseball … but it’s good. I don’t mind it. Because they’re here to teach me, as well. I have a willing ear to listen to the things they have to say from their experiences.”

Turner visited with Cougars manager Mark Johnson as the Snappers prepared for batting practice.

Both men hail from Warner Robins, Georgia, and Johnson conceded, “You don’t see that too often; two guys from Warner Robins.”

A healthy crowd at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark is far more commonplace, as Turner is quick to attest.

“Being able to come here and experience that in a playoff atmosphere was huge,” he said.

Round 1 saw Hoss triple bogey the par 4 18th, and he bogeyed the final hole Thursday.

Friday was a different story as Hoss ended the threeday tournament on a high note with a birdie.

“My short game was perfect,” he said. “When my short game is on, I’d say I’m a pretty good player.”

Burlington Central’s Joseph Sherman was right on the cut line Thursday and ended in a tie for 25th after

a final round 77. Sherman opened with a bogey on three of the first four holes but would finish the front nine at even par with three birdies on the next three holes.

Sherman, who will be a sophomore in the fall, thought he left a few shots out on the course – especially on the back nine, where he carded a 42 – but was happy for the experience of making the cut at a multi-day tournament.

“It was up and down on the front nine, but on the back I kind of fell apart,” Sherman said. “I was looking to shoot in the low to mid 70s. Other than that, it was a fun day.”

Graham Lillibridge of Geneva also finished up with a 77 and his 12-over 225 for the tournament earned him 22nd place.

Lillibridge continued his strong play on the back nine Friday with an even par 36.

For the tournament, the junior at Geneva was three-under on the back nine.

BEARS POSITION BREAKDOWN – OFFENSIVE LINE

Offensive line goes from suspect to strength

Today: Offensive line

Overview: When the Bears arrived in Bourbonnais last year, no unit had more question marks than the offensive line. Fast forward 12 months.

With their 2013 first-rounder coming off a Pro Bowl appearance, and their quarterbacks having been sacked only 30 times, the Bears expect their front wall to be one of their greatest assets.

For the first time since 2006-07, the Bears expect to return all five starters up front.

Left tackle Jermon Bushrod,

left guard Matt Slauson, center Roberto Garza, right guard Kyle Long and right tackle Jordan Mills formed one of three lines in the NFL last season to start all 16 games in the same spots. The group gained cohesion as the season wore on, but also the trust of quarterback Jay Cutler, who had been part of too many “hit parades” in previous seasons in Chicago.

Although the starters are set, the NFL is a league of attrition, where expecting such good health and continuity two seasons in a row would be foolish. Thus, Bourbonnais will be a critical audition period for backups – centers Brian de la Puente and Taylor Boggs, guards James Brown and Michael Ola, and tackles Eben Britton and Charles Leno Jr. – at least one of whom is likely to play meaningful snaps.

Position battles: With Slauson missing the offseason

while recovering from shoulder surgery, Britton filled in at left guard. But once Long and Mills joined Slauson on the sideline out of precaution – Mills is coming off foot surgery – Britton moved to right tackle, with Ola and Boggs at left and right Matt Slauson guard, respectively. The odd man out was James Brown, two years removed from showing promise as a starting guard but a healthy scratch 16 times last season. Brown enters camp squarely on the roster bubble.

The de la Puente signing, at least initially, seemed like bad news for Boggs, but he showed some of the versatility offensive line coaches crave in the offseason. Yet de la Puente can also fill in at guard and, given Ola’s familiarity with coach

Marc Trestman and quick rise up the depth chart after his June signing, Boggs also needs a strong camp showing later this month to enhance his job security.

Leno was fairly nondescript in the offseason, but his ability – paired with Britton’s inability – to play left tackle means the seventh-rounder (Leno) and sixth offensive lineman from a season ago (Britton) are relatively safe heading into camp. Leno seemed ahead of Joe Long and Brown on the early depth chart on the blind side.

Contract situations: General manager Phil Emery rewarded Garza, 35, with a one-year, $1.5 million deal in February.

Emery locked up Slauson for four years and almost $5 million guaranteed. The moves ensured the Bears, who control the rights of Bushrod, Long and Mills for three more years, have the ability to re-

turn their starting five intact.

Top reserves Britton and de la Puente are on veteran minimum deals, looking to cash in if they get extensive playing time because of an injury.

Keep an eye on: de la Puente.

Signed to a one-year deal in April, the former Saint – who made 44 consecutive starts in New Orleans from 2011 to 2013 – is the wild card. He was signed to back up Garza, the glue of the unit and a locker room leader, but de la Puente is eight years younger than Garza and just as well-versed in offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer ’s blocking schemes from their time together in the Big Easy.

The Bears have specifically stated de la Puente will back up Garza, but a strong camp from the newcomer could change things. If nothing else, de la Puente is auditioning for 2015, when a center vacancy is imminent.

GENEVA – Luke Hoss wasn’t even sure he was going to play golf this week.

The junior from Marmion was on the waiting list for the IJGA-CDGA Junior Amateur Open at Mill Creek, and when he showed up at the course Wednesday morning, there wasn’t a guaranteed spot for him in the field.

Luckily for Hoss, there was a cancellation and he was able to compete in the tournament, finishing in sixth place with a 3-over par 216. He shot 70 Friday.

“It’s really exciting. I hit the ball really well today and played really well over the

past three days,” said Hoss, a Sugar Grove resident. “This is definitely the best tournament of my career.”

Hoss’ sixth-place finish came after back-to-back days at 1-under par. He was one of just four players in the field to be under par in the final round and finished five strokes behind winner Andrew Huber of Winnetka.

Hoss kept an even keel for the whole round – 15 pars to go with one bogey and two birdies on his second-consecutive day at 1-under. Hoss credited his ball striking for the strong round, as his only bogey on the card came from a three-putt.

Although Hoss was happy with the round as a whole, there was extra satisfaction in conquering No. 18, which had been troublesome in the first two rounds.

Latest ‘Decision’ shows LeBron holds home above all else

By leaving Cleveland for Miami and going back to Cleveland on Friday, LeBron James made a dramatic reversal from the power move that defined his career, brandished his authority throughout the NBA and allowed him to take his seemingly pre-destined place among other legends in the game.

This time, James isn’t just taking his talents some place.

He is also taking his family, two championship rings, two more most valuable player trophies and a greater understanding that winning in some places – there’s no place like home – will be more valuable than others.

James got what he wanted and needed from his four years in Miami. The Heat taught him how a championship-level organization operates, provided him with a chance to play with two of his best friends in basketball, Dwyane Wade and Chris

James had to understand that his home state had never fully healed from his departure, the scab wasn’t ready to be removed. One bad cramp

in the NBA Finals served as a reminder that he will always be a target for scorn from those who never forgave him for how an ill-planned TV special on ESPN played out.

The best way for James to repair his image was to go back to the place that raised him and praised him before anywhere else. Of course James won’t be able to win over everyone, and some fans in Miami will struggle grappling with the loss until they remember they live in Miami. But few can find fault in hometown kid who left, made good, learned from his mistakes and wants to return.

If James wanted to make a basketball decision, he had better options. Houston had more seasoned talent. Phoenix had a comparable stash of young talent plus the cap space to add another running mate in either Carmelo Anthony or Bosh.

But he didn’t want to be viewed as a mercenary jumping ship to the next hot team.

To him, the choices were to stay or go home.

James’s career won’t necessarily be defined by whether he catches Michael Jordan with six titles, nor if he surpasses Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the all-time leading scorer. James has a chance to do the unprecedented in a city where the Larry O’Brien trophy has only visited once – when the San Antonio Spurs carried it out of the Quicken Loans Arena in 2007 – and hasn’t won a major championship of any kind since 1964.

Fifty years later, Cleveland sports fans have a chance to experience an even better feeling. The best player in the world chose them, chose to give them hope that it really could be done in northeast Ohio.

Alone. The dog looked back toward the house, from his spot in the yard (he’d been hoping for a walk, but the boy had other plans), with that quiet, baffled, “Hey, guys?” look on his ever-concerned Golden Retriever face.

I think he was more worried about why Noah didn’t have Mom or Dad with him than upset that he’d been left behind.

It was a first for us all.

Noah turned 16 years old this week, and, like a dog with a bone, he’d had his eye on the prize. His license.

We arrived at the DMV in Aurora for his road test on his birthday, before they even opened the doors.

“Makes you not want to speed,” Noah said, when he saw the lines beginning to form. We took our seats in the waiting room.

Soon, it was his turn to have his documents inspected. Beside us conversing with another clerk was a young man who’d hoped to renew his license.

“Your license is suspended until September,” she said, as she proceeded to remind him of the number of moving violations he’d racked up. I felt him deflate. Consequences are necessary, but still, tough stuff. I silently thanked him. His disappointment was not a bad thing for a new driver to witness, after all. We’re all unwitting players in a play, no?

“Alone?” I asked, grinning.

“Yup!” he said. A little while later, the phone rang. My heart did a little flip. It was Noah.

“Mom?” “Yeah?” Turns out it was nothing to worry about. I exhaled. Thank God. Wonder when I’ll stop worrying every time the phone rings?

After he’d asked if he could take the car that first time, and then jogged down the stairs to go in search of my keys, and after I returned to my desk to write this column, it dawned on me that I’d want to SEE this thing happen, to enjoy this milestone. I scrambled out of my chair and sprinted to his bedroom window, which overlooks the driveway, just in time to see Jake glance worriedly back at the house and our boy back the car into the street.

How dear is this dog? How dear is this boy? Mere words cannot express what this moment is like for a parent.

Thank God I was there, though, at that window, because a moment later my firstborn paused as he shifted the car into drive. He glanced up and, finally spotting me at his window, smiled and then waved goodbye.

ou have created the perfect container plantings. They may be a welcoming collection at the front door or splashes of color on the patio or deck.

Now you want to keep them looking gorgeous all summer. We have all experienced the leggy or dead flower stems that start to appear mid to late summer when the temperatures begin to rise. This is the time when your container plants need the most attention.

• Watering. Container soil dries out very quickly. It may be necessary to water every day during hot, dry spells. Test the soil with your fingers and, if the first inch is dry, water until it starts to drip from the drainage hole. Using contain-

• Grooming. This can consist of pinching and deadheading. Pinching is the practice of removing the top of a plant when it becomes leggy to allow it to maintain a certain shape and to keep the growth in check. Some annuals that benefit from pinching include pansy, petunia, and snapdragon. Deadheading refers to the removal of dead flowers to promote more blooms, to clean up the appearance of

the plant, and to prevent disease. Annuals that require deadheading include marigold, geranium, zinnia, dahlia, and gaillardia. Some plants, such as the begonia, are “self-cleaning” and do not require removal of dead flowers.

If you continue to water, fertilize and groom throughout the growing season, you can expect your container plants to flourish and bloom well into the fall.

The Shins are warbling at Cucina inside the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, a power lunch spot frequented by Hollywood’s most cold-blooded players. Over the restaurant’s speakers, “The Simple Song” – the same one used in the trailer for Braff’s new film, “Wish I Was Here” – interrupts a bite of his steak salad.

“You’re going to put that in the story, right? Here we are ... in a nook in the Four Seasons ... and the Shins come on,” the 39-year-old “Scrubs”-star-turnedauteur wisecracks in a mock narrator’s voice.

Praise Zach Braff. By making the Shins the “change-your-life” contretemps of “Garden State” (and its Grammy-winning soundtrack), the New Jersey native introduced the mid-’00s indie pop avatars to the masses, allowing them to anesthetize lunches in swanky hotel restaurants.

A decade later, actor and band are as intertwined as John Travolta and the Bee Gees.

“Everyone’s seen an amazing band and thought, ‘How does no one know about them?” Braff speaks animatedly, powder-blue eyes bulging. “I love being able to occasionally pull out bands and say, ‘Check these [guys] out.’”

To his acolytes, Braff is the every-nebbish – the alienated but empathetic “nice guy” struggling in a world that has rewarded his talent generously, but not absolutely. He’s the patron saint of those slightly thwarted in their ambitions, lucky to be where they’re at and unable to escape the neurotic black hole of their heads.

Yet others see him as an emblem of musical gentrification, a privileged incarnate of “Stuff White People Like,” a glib tipping point in the eventual Urban Outfitterization of indie rock.

Regardless of your axis on the Braffian spectrum, “Garden State’s” impact was unmistakable. Made for $2.5 million, the 2004 word-of-LiveJournal sensation grossed $26.7 domestically, sold enough DVDs to fill the infinite abyss, and won a Grammy (Best Compilation Soundtrack) and Independent Spirit Award (Best First Feature).

The success shocked Braff. It transformed him from a pratfalling TV doctor to an indie heartthrob – a writer, director, actor and introduced co-star Natalie Portman as the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. The film’s screwball psychosomatic wanderings set to sad-sack indie rock gave “Little Miss Sunshine” and “Juno” a style to run with. It happened before he was 30.

A Braffian takeover seemed imminent after “Garden State.” You don’t need to know about out-of-state production tax credits to understand that when your first movie makes its money back 20-fold, someone usually quickly finances a follow-up. But that didn’t happen. Listening to Braff explain his decade-long odyssey to make its successor doubles as an indictment of modern film financing.

“My ego was humbled,” Braff says. “I know I haven’t been able to make a movie in 10 years, but I’ve tried. They just all fell apart. Of course, I could’ve gone and made a big studio romantic comedy with stars. But ‘Scrubs’ put me in a position where I could say no.”

That’s not to say that there were no industry dalliances. The 2006 DreamWorks release, “The Last Kiss” was a romantic comedy misfire that promised him the chance to rewrite the script in a more “gritty and real” tone. (“Yeah, right,” he rolls his eyes.) That year saw the release of “The Ex,” another critical and commercial failure.

High points included a 2005 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor on “Scrubs” (he left the show in 2009), and a hilarious turn as a “Girls Gone Wild” sleazoid on “Arrested Development.” His dream deferred was the adaptation of a dark Danish film called “Open Hearts.”

Sean Penn reportedly agreed to star, but production stalled when Braff’s lead actress (whose identity he declines to divulge) bailed for another role while he was location scouting in Atlanta.

“Everything is celebrity dependent, and celebrities’ schedules are always in flux. It’s fascinating that anything gets made,” Braff says. “Eighty percent of a

movie is the cast, but money guys treat it like a Chinese food menu. ‘You can only make it with him if you pair him with her.’ There’s people on lists whose names you don’t even know and when you ask, they say, ‘Oh, they’re in a giant franchise coming out. By the time your movie comes out, they’ll be huge.’”

“I’m making a tiny movie about my spirituality, my family and my biggest fears. And I’m supposed to give final cut to a banker, who’s going to make his cuts totally based on a test screening in the suburbs of L.A.? No. [Forget] that,” Braff thunders in a mild-mannered way.

“Everything everyone loves about ‘Garden State’ wouldn’t be in ‘Garden State’ if I hadn’t stumbled into a rich guy who knew nothing about the business and gave me final cut,” he says.

A spiritual sequel to “Garden State,” it raises personal and religious questions: how to reconcile personal limitations with childhood dreams, the fantasy of being saved by the love of your family, the crushing nothingness of death.

“If I have a religion, it’s just aspiring to be a good person and to live to the fullest in every moment, because I don’t think there’s an afterlife. I think we’re animals and they put us in the ground, and we’re eaten by worms,” Braff says.

As he says this, his face tightens and his eyes zone out in the familiar 1,000yard stare of his on-screen characters.

“It doesn’t work for me to believe that Noah’s Ark was real. The only religious sentiment that does is to go, ‘I’m here now. How can I be a good person to those around me? How can I express myself artistically, honestly and truly, without compromise?’” he said.

Luckily, a few simple steps can help prevent chronic neck pain.

Here are some dos and dont’s recommended by physical therapist Amy Devaney of Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital: • DO keep your neck in a neutral position. That means your head balances directly over your spine and is not leaning forward or over to one side.

• DO keep your shoulders down and back in a relaxed position. Set an alarm every 45 minutes to “fix” your posture if you need to.

• DO set up your workstation with your computer screen at eye level and your feet supported on the floor.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff • DO keep stress levels low.

Stress promotes poor body position and muscle tension that can pull the head forward. Consider practicing yoga or tai chi to help reduce stress.

• DO consider getting a desk chair with a headrest, like in your car. I have such a chair, and I’m writing this column with my head resting against the headrest.

• DON’T roll your head round and round your neck, as some people do to loosen their neck muscles. This can grind your bones together. Instead, gently stretch your neck from side to side: Slowly look left and hold for 10 seconds, then slowly look right and hold for 10 seconds. Or gently stretch up and down: Slowly bend your neck back and hold for 10 seconds. Then slowly put your chin close to your chest and hold for 10 seconds. (I’ve put an illustration of this stretch on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

• DON’T hold your head in a

bent position for more than 10 minutes, whether you’re reading, watching TV, or looking at a smartphone or computer. Change position so your eyes are looking straight ahead.

• DON’T talk on the phone while leaning your head to one side. Use a headset or Bluetooth device.

• DO see a doctor if your neck pain lasts more than two weeks.

It’s somewhat more expensive, but I found that getting a separate flat-screen monitor (much larger than the screen on my laptop) and a separate keyboard made an enormous difference. Instead of scrunching over to squint at a relatively small screen (and typing on a relatively small keyboard), I could sit with my spine vertical and my head in line with my spine. And I could rest my head on my chair’s headrest. I am now much less fatigued at the end of a workday.

• Remember that you’re a model for your children. Whatever bad habits you indulge in – smoking, drinking, using drugs, watching too much television, swearing, blowing up at your spouse – are likely to be taken up by your teen. The “Do as I say,

• Maintain a strong presence in your teen’s life. Parents should not allow peer pressure to set their teen’s values. Instead, the family should have regularly scheduled discussions that take on all topics of importance.

And don’t be afraid to admit it when you don’t know the answer.

• Make sure the rules you set for your teen are fair, and be consistent in disciplinary measures when rules are broken.

Parents should explain the purpose behind the rules and, wherever possible, allow the teen to have a say in making the rule and setting the consequences.

• Work with your teen’s school and teachers, not against them. Your teen must understand that any inappropriate behavior at school will meet with consequences at home.

This is imperative if your teen is to acquire a good education.

The school and the parents must be in harmony for the student to get the best possible education. It hinders a teen’s learning process when parents are not involved, and it devastates the learning process when the school and parents are in conflict.

The school should be an extension of the home in a total educational program.

You are a very wise father-to-be, and I know that you will do an outstanding job.

Bridge players often compete only on weekends, when counting points and suit lengths will be very important.

This deal occurred during a social game. What should happen in two no-trump after West leads his fourth-highest club and East puts up his king? Do you agree with North’s pass over two notrump?

Taking those questions in reverse order, North should have used Stayman, then raised three spades to four spades. That contract could have been made, but it would have been a tad lucky. Still, South could have had a more suitable hand. And at the worst, South would have ended in three no-trump when he did not have a four-card major.

Maybe it would have made.

In two no-trump, South took East’s club king with his ace and exited with a low spade. East won with the 10 and returned the club seven, high from a remaining doubleton. West took South’s nine with his 10 and erred badly by cashing the club queen. (The club jack could not be dropping, because if East had started with K-7-3-2 of clubs, he would have led back the club two, not the seven.)

South took the next club with his jack and played a second spade. East won and shifted to a heart. South won and led his spade queen. East took the trick and played another heart, but South won, unblocked his diamond winners, crossed to dummy with a spade, and cashed the diamond king for his eighth trick.
