Kane County Board OKs concealed carry policy for employees

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County employees licensed for concealed carry are now prohibited from carrying firearms in their personal vehicle while on county business – even if the vehicle is parked.

The Kane County Board approved the policy this week as part of its consent agenda.

Under the Illinois Firearm Concealed Carry Act, concealed firearms are prohibited in government buildings, but parking areas are considered “safe harbors,” meaning those licensed for concealed carry may keep guns in a locked case within a vehicle, according to county documents.

When considering the new policy in April, a County

Board committee expressed concerns about balancing liability issues and employees’ constitutional rights.

Assistant State’s Attorney Joseph Lulves, who drafted the employee concealed carry policy, has told board members that the county is within its rights to restrict employees’ ability to carry firearms in their vehicles.

He has compared the restrictions to other ways employers are able to regulate employee behavior, such as prohibiting certain clothing.

The policy the County Board passed on Tuesday reflects a “risk management position,” Lulves has said.

The policy does not apply to county employees authorized to carry a concealed firearm by any other state statute.

Under state law, concealed carry is prohibited in government buildings, such as the Kane County Judicial Center, but a new policy passed by the Kane County Board this week takes the law one step further by prohibiting many employees from carrying firearms in their personal vehicles.

County electric aggregation program inches toward implementation

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County is about to be one step closer toward implementing an electric aggregation program for unincorporated residents.

The Energy and Environmental Committee on Thursday recommended approval of the electrical power aggregation plan of operation and governance.

The document – which

was the subject of two public hearings last month – describes the policies and procedures the county will use to carry out its electric aggregation program, including policies and procedures relating to rates and customer service.

Ken Anderson, director of the county’s division of environmental and water resources, expects the County Board will approve the plan in August.

But the implementation

process likely won’t be done for at least two to three months, he said, acknowledging that’s not as fast as some might like.

Next steps include hiring a consultant to help the county secure an electric rate from a supplier, Anderson said. He said the goal is getting a rate lower than ComEd. Otherwise, he said, the county won’t proceed.

Residents will be able to opt out of the program and continue to get their electric-

ity supplied by ComEd, but the county expects that those in the program should experience some savings.

Several municipalities within the county – including Elburn and Campton Hills – have electric aggregation programs.

In other news, Anderson presented some highlights from a portion of the 2015 proposed budget that falls under the county’s development umbrella.

In addition to allocating

$1 million for the proposed cross-country course at Settler’s Hill, Anderson said the budget includes $25,000 to replace a 2002 Chevrolet Blazer with a hybrid vehicle, making it the county’s first gas-electric vehicle.

Today, the Judicial and Public Safety Committee is expected to hear budget presentations from 13 departments and offices, including the state’s attorney’s office, sheriff’s office and coroner’s office.

‘SUSPICIOUS’ DEATH Woman’s husband held in county jail; investigation ongoing

and EOIN COTTRELL ecottrell@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The death of a woman found on the train tracks Sunday in Geneva is being considered suspicious, police said. Her husband was being held in the Kane County Jail as late as Thursday afternoon but had not been charged, according to records and police.

Shadwick R. King, husband of Kathleen M. King, 32, of the 800 block of Oak Street in Geneva, has been held in jail since 9:07 p.m. Tuesday, according to jail records.

“Because of not having a confirmed cause of death, we are considering it suspicious in nature,” Geneva Police Cmdr. Julie Nash said. “We are working with Kane County Major Crimes Task Force. We asked for assistance because we don’t have the resources.”

The major crimes task force is made up of officers from all departments in the county.

Nash said there is no reason for the community to be concerned about its safety, with regard to Kathleen King’s death.

“If we thought there was a public safety issue, we would be addressing that, obviously,” Nash said.

Nash said King has not been arrested by Geneva police.

“He has not been charged; we did not arrest him,” Nash said early Thursday afternoon. “We are waiting for a confirmed cause of death and looking into all areas. We are looking at all possibilities. I am not going to comment on an on-

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office would not respond to questions about Shadwick King being held in the jail, nor about any charges that might be pending against him.

A person may be held in custody 72 hours before being charged.

Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said Kathleen King was not hit by a train, and there was no obvious trauma that might have caused her death.

Russell said the autopsy showed she did not die of a heart attack or stroke.

“There was no natural form of death that we could see,” Russell said. “We are waiting on toxicology for the cause of

death.”

Russell said when Kathleen King was found at 6:50 a.m.

Sunday, she had been dead a few hours. He said she looked like she was wearing running clothes.

Kathleen and Shadwick King bought the house in the 800 block of Oak Street in Geneva in 2007, records show.

The house went into foreclosure in 2011, but the action was dismissed and refiled in 2012.

The foreclosure was scheduled to be in court later this month, records show.

Neighbors to the King family said police interviewed them and served a search warrant on the house, removing a pet hamster and gold fish. A dog also was removed from the house and was relocated at a

neighbor’s house, a neighbor said.

Neighbors also said the Kings’ young sons are now staying with grandparents.

Kim Lundsmann, who lives one street over, said her sons used to play at the Kings’ house. She and other neighbors said Kathleen had said she just finished basic training in the U.S. Army and that she was finishing a master’s degree – but none had information as to what school she attended or what the degree was in.

An Army spokesman was unable to immediately confirm Thursday that King was in basic training.

Lundsmann said the Kings were very welcoming.

“He said to me, ‘Your boys are welcome here any

time,’ ” Lundsmann said. “He was very friendly, funny, sociable. … He was redoing his house. He was showing me the new fireplace, the new wooden floors he put down and he was very happy.”

Neighbors said when police served a search warrant on the house, they pulled up the floorboards.

The Kings’ house had bikes and scooters piled up in the driveway Thursday afternoon.

Three wooden doors were stacked against the side of the house. A white bowl of milk and cereal with a spoon still in it was abandoned on the hood of a white Ford Taurus in the driveway.

Other neighbors on Oak, Ronald and Marge Maier, said they used to see the Kings’ children playing outside all the time and saw Shadwick King working on projects in his garage. The Maiers said it seemed he worked as an upholsterer.

“They had very well-behaved kids,” Ron Maier said.

Kathleen King worked at the Savers store in Carol Stream at the time of her death, said Emily Aranda, store manager of the St. Charles Savers.

King helped open the St. Charles store in summer 2012 after being trained at another store when she was first hired, Aranda said. She said she was extremely saddened about King’s death.

“Kate was a good friend of mine,” Aranda said. “She was a wonderful, wonderful person. She was very pleasant to have in our building. She was always happy, always smiling; she will definitely be missed.”

Sturgeon doesn’t always “get this lucky” finding places to stay. He often has spent nights just sleeping on the ground, he said.

Sturgeon started his endeavor in his hometown of Batesville, Arkansas. In order to get to Illinois, he had to

cross the Mississippi River, he said.

“I was at Chester Bridge to cross the Mississippi,” Sturgeon said. “The authorities shut down the entire bridge for 10 minutes so my horse and I could cross. I had to be the only person in 100 years to have the bridge shut down so I could ride across. It was pretty cool.”

Different people in history have made the journey across 48 states. Sturgeon believes his travels are different – he

could be the first person to travel using one horse for the whole ride.

Sturgeon’s plans for the near future include riding into Wisconsin.

“I’m going to ride up into Wisconsin and then come back down and do like a horseshoe around Chicago. From there, I’m going to go through the states on my way to Maine.

Then onto New York,” Sturgeon said.

Along the way, Sturgeon stops at churches and schools to give speeches about the work that the Western Wishes does for kids, he said. He also

One man is riding on one horse, with a goal to travel through the nation. Tye Sturgeon, 20, of Arkansas, was riding horseback across the state of Illinois this past week. Sturgeon is making a three-year journey to travel across 48 states for a foundation called Western Wishes.

“Western Wishes is a nonprofit organization that raises money to grant wishes to kids with an illness ... ,” Sturgeon said.

“Claudia’s Closet has closed forever as of June 30,” read a statement on the business website and Facebook page. “We’d like to thank the many friends we made while we were in business. We loved meeting you and hope we’ll meet again.”

Owner Patti Cichon took over the business from Karla Sitko, said Matt O’Rourke, St. Charles economic development division manager.

Sitko opened the store with her mother, Beverly Schuler, in April 2011.

“It didn’t work out the way they had hoped, unfortunately,” O’Rourke said on Thursday.

GENEVA – Alyssa Alvin wasn’t satisfied with sitting around – she always wanted to do something, her parents said.

“She just loved life and lived it to her fullest potential,” Alyssa Alvin’s mother, Yolanda Alvin, said.

Alyssa Alvin, 18, died at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago on Tuesday surrounded by her family and friends, according to her obituary.

Alyssa Alvin was diagnosed with a c u t e l y m - Alyssa Alvin phoblastic leukemia during her freshman year at Geneva High School, but that didn’t stop her from a heavy course load and a range of extracurricular activities. She began playing piano by the time she was 5 and started violin when she was 10, her father, George Alvin, said.

When renowned Japanese violinist Midori came to the Elgin Symphony Orchestra in 2008, Alyssa Alvin was elected to be first chair for the performance, Yolanda Alvin said.

George Alvin said his daughter strived to be independent but still was close to her family. The Alvins would exercise together, play vid-

eo games and also traveled the world. One of Alyssa Alvin’s favorite trips was to the Greek island of Santorini, her mother said.

During one of her hospital stays, Alyssa Alvin began a sketch of a geisha that turned into a full collage. The artwork received one of the top bids at a Lurie Children’s Hospital fundraiser in 2011, Yolanda Alvin said.

When Alyssa Alvin’s leukemia was in remission during her senior year, she started as a volunteer with Midwest ENT Consultants and later was hired to admit patients and assist Dr. Christopher Hampson, Yolanda Alvin said.

Alyssa Alvin graduated from Geneva High School in 2013 and later that year began attending Loyola University in Chicago. She wanted to be an anesthesiologist, but her plans and college career took a turn when her leukemia relapsed in February.

Her teachers told her parents that it was a privilege to have known her and have her in their classes.

“She truly was an amazing person, very vibrant and beautiful from the inside and out,” Yolanda Alvin said.

A visitation for Alyssa Alvin will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Yurs Funeral Home, 1771 W. State St., Geneva. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter Catholic Church, 1891 Kaneville Road, Geneva.

Steve had a long career in Millwork Project Management in the Chicagoland area and was currently working at the Home Depot in North Aurora. His favorite way to pass time while enjoying retirement was bragging about his grandchildren.

Steven is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Fortier (nee Runge), of Sugar Grove; his son, Jeremy (Katie) Fortier, of Indianapolis; his daughter, Jaime (Gib) Jones, of O’Fallon, Illinois; his grandchildren, Reagan and Gunther Fortier; his mother June Fortier; his two brothers, Michael (Susan) Fortier and Timothy (Mandy) Fortier; his

DONALD L. VAN HORN Died: July 9, 2014 AURORA – Donald L. Van Horn, 52, of Aurora, passed away on July 9. DVH, as he was known to his friends, passed away due to complications from electrocution while working on a job site. Don graduated from West Aurora High School in 1979 and attended

Western Kentucky University on a baseball scholarship. He played competitive baseball for a number of years and was a highly acclaimed catcher and valued teammate to a number of high level teams throughout the Southeastern and Midwestern regions.

He surrounded himself with the people, life and competitive sports he loved. After his days of competitive baseball, he devoted his athletic talents to playing pool and was an avid golfer. A consummate “gamer,” he loved to compete but loved the camaraderie that came with the “game” even more.

People knew him best for his athleticism, competitive spirit and staunch devotion to family and friends. People loved him for his sense of humor and a willingness to help whoever was

in need in whatever way he could.

An electrician by profession, Don also was a true tradesman. He was adept at general construction and maintenance – roofing, carpentry, electrical and painting among others. He often used his abilities for the benefit of others.

Donald is survived by his mother, Augustina Walz, of Aurora; his older brother, Chuck, and his wife Glenda; Chuck’s three daughters, Amber, Leah and Ali Van Horn, of Oswego; his older sister, Christina (Van Horn) Wilson, and her children, Amanda, husband Bill French, Ariana and Ben Wilson of Minooka; his younger brothers, James and his children, Tanner and Katrina of Kaneland, and Nicolas and his wife, Jennifer, and their children, Aiden, Austin and Alex of Batavia; and finally, his brother, Todd Van Horn, of Harbor, Oregon. Don also leaves behind his girlfriend Marsha Moon; his best friend, John Burns; and many other family members and friends.

Don is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Carolina and Louis Mauricio; his paternal grandparents; Norma and Charles Van Horn Sr.; and stepfather, Rick Walz.

Officers also ticketed eight motorists for seat belt violations; three for driving with a suspended or revoked license; five for driving without insurance; 15 for speeding; 18 for using a cellphone while driving; and eight for other violations.

Additionally, officers issued 31 warnings for various violations.

The campaign, which was done in cooperation with – and funded by – the Illinois Department of Transportation, ended Sunday.

Geneva to revisit historic landmarking ordinance GENEVA – Two Geneva residents asked city officials to revisit its ordinance that allows historic landmarking of an individual property without an owner’s consent.

Staff is to research the issue and bring it back to the council for consideration.

Marty Smircich of the 900 block of South Batavia Avenue and Teresa Keenan of the 1700 block of Southampton Court both sought a change in how properties are landmarked to include an owner’s consent.

“I agree with the importance of the historic district,” Smircich said at a meeting this week. “I’ve never talked to anyone who doesn’t think the downtown historic district is extremely important to the history of the city, and to the future of the city, and to the economic development and well-being of the city.

The preservation code is a whole different story.”

In particular, Smircich said the city’s ordinance that allows landmark status to be sought by anyone anywhere without the owner’s consent is wrong.

“Anyone in the country could apply to landmark my house or to landmark yours without my consent or without your consent,” Smircich said. “Not only that, it could be done in secrecy without the owner knowing it for up to 45 days.”

Smircich said the city’s code does not have any requirement to tell the owner.

“It’s not something that should happen,” Smircich said. “It would take six members of this council to take

Smircich said he would support starting with a $5,000 minimum fee for applying for landmark status for a property, which would keep people who are not truly serious from applying.

Keenan, a real estate agent, said she ran into a problem with a client who had bought a property that someone else tried to landmark against his wishes.

“We don’t have a process that the minute those applications are received that the property owner is … notified,” Keenan said. “It was a very unpleasant experience. … We could be much more proactive in the process than we are now.”

Still, Community Development Director Dick Untch said there was a lot of background to the requirement that the owner’s consent is not needed.

He said the city’s ordinance follows a model for historic preservation agencies.

In 2011, the council voted 8-1 with one absent to maintain the ordinance not to require an owner’s consent of landmark status.

“The general consensus at that time was that it would be the intent of [the] city to

seek out voluntary landmark applications,” Untch said.

The value of such a requirement allows the city to protect historic properties from being demolished.

Still, Untch said, the final decision to allow the landmark status belongs to the City Council.

“The designation does not take place until the City Council votes ‘yea’ or ‘nay,’ ” Untch said. “It all rests right here. It totally rests with the City Council.”

Untch warned that the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency watches the activities of Certified Local Governments, and a move to require an owner’s consent could unravel the city’s status.

Through the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, local governments participate in state and federal incentive programs where properties located in certified historic districts can qualify for the 20 percent income tax credit, according to www.illinois.gov.

Certification also extends the a property tax assessment freeze, which also benefits local landmark and residences within local historic districts.

The Certified Local Government Program, was established by the National Historic Preservation Act Amendments of 1980. It gives municipalities and counties the opportunity to participate as partners in state and federal preservation activities, according to the website.

“If we take this non-owner consent and turn it into an owner consent, I’m not sure what they would do,” Untch said.

Smircich said because he agrees with the importance of the historic district, he would withdraw his objection to no-owner consent if it would put the city’s Certified Local Government Program in jeopardy.

“But I’d be darn sure we can’t put owner consent in there,” Smircich said. “Will they allow it? I think we should know. Historic preservation is something we do for the citizens of Geneva, not something we do to the citizens of Geneva.”

Second Ward Alderman Richard Marks said he was the “no” vote in 2011.

“I think it’s worth looking at,” Marks said.

“I don’t think there’s anybody on this council or anybody in this town that isn’t a staunch supporter of historic preservation,” 5th Ward Alderman Tom Simonian said.

“But I also don’t think there is anybody who is not a staunch supporter of personal property rights,” Simonian said. “My concern is, you put the two of them together, in my opinion, personal property rights will always come before an outside force trying to designate your

property.”

Simonian said the process is embarrassing because a packet will show up in the mailbox of property owners, essentially blindsiding owners regarding the application for historic landmark status.

“This is wrong to begin with,” Simonian said.

How Brazil’s World Cup disaster could change the nation

By ISHAAN THAROOR The Washington Post It was the most shocking defeat in the history of the World Cup. Brazil’s 7-1 semifinal annihilation in Belo Horizonte at the hands of a faultless German side brought the host nation’s tournament to a shuddering, horrifying end. After billions of dollars spent on stadiums, after years of build-up and preparation, after so much accrued expectation for soccer’s most famed national team, no one could have conceived that it would suffer its worst ever World Cup loss. But it did.

The reaction in Brazil has been a mix of anger and despair. The impact of such a monumental blow will likely echo for months and years to come. Here’s how:

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

1. It buried the Maracanazo – The Brazilian story ahead of the World Cup focused entirely on the trauma of 1950, the last time Brazil hosted the tournament. A surprise 2-1 defeat to Uruguay in Rio de Janeiro in what was basically the final (the tournament followed a different structure then) led to a moment of national reckoning: The team that lost was vilified and shamed. Brazil was so haunted by that upset that the team did away with its customary white shirt in favor of its now iconic yellow one. Despite winning more World Cup titles than any other nation, the entire build-up to this tournament seemed to be about Brazil burying the ghost of 1950 – the Maracanazo, named after Rio’s main stadium.

And now the Maracanazo may be forgotten, but only because it has been replaced by something far more ghoulish.

2. It could topple Brazil’s president – Elections are scheduled for later this year, and President Dilma Rousseff, while still ahead in the polls, may have real cause to lament the loss. The Brazilian government hedged its bets with the World Cup, hoping victory in the tournament could boost popular goodwill for the government and quiet the chorus of protesters, angry at wasteful spending and the country’s inability to provide much-needed improvements on infrastructure, health care and education.

There’s a long history of statesmen and autocrats looking to the World Cup to burnish their own image.

Now, after the horror and shock of the defeat recedes in Brazil, one wonders if it will refocus attention on what ails Brazilian society.

3. It could change Brazilian soccer – Ultimately, the defeat will have its greatest impact on the sport in Brazil, where, like a religion, it fuels nationalism, provides a badge of identity and is a vessel for popular hopes and aspirations. The team’s stars, like the waifish (and injured) Neymar, are megarich icons, backed by myriad corporate sponsorship deals. Yet they caved under pressure.

But that Brazilian dream did not really represent the magical “jogo bonito” that made the nation famous on the global stage in the 1960s and 1970s – and it has not done so for decades. The cur-

rent Brazilian team, under its conservative coach, Luis Felipe Scolari, was numbingly pragmatic, perhaps even cynical, in its approach. Ever since losing in 1982, Brazil shifted its ethos to match the physicality and toughness of European opponents, stocking its teams with sturdy, unimaginative defensive midfielders.

Perhaps the pendulum has swung too far in that direction, suggest some commentators, and this defeat will present another inflection point like 1982. Many Brazilians will hope that’s the case.

Trio of area boys head to final day

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Jenna Kurosky entered the final day of the girls division at the IJGA-CDGA Junior Amateur protecting a one-stroke lead over one competitor and a four-stroke advantage over another.

But it turned out to be someone deeper down the leaderboard who wrestled the tournament championship away from the recent Burlington Central graduate.

Maria Harrast, a sophomore at Hinsdale Central, stunned the field with a 2-under par 69 on Thursday, slashing 11 strokes off her opening-round score to win the tournament at Mill Creek Golf Club with a twoday total of 149.

Kurosky, who shot matching 75s to land one stroke behind Harrast, couldn’t have seen the resolution coming.

“Very surprised,” Kurosky said. “Because I haven’t seen that in a tournament before, a girl shooting so low. She’s good.”

Kurosky said her rounds of 75 were one stroke better than her previous top career total. Meanwhile, Harrast lopped eight strokes off the 77 that marked her previous best score.

“I didn’t want to get too far ahead of myself because then I could screw something up, so I just tried to forget about the score and keep playing,” said Harrast, who notched four birdies and had two bogeys on the day.

While the much larger boys field was cut down to 30 finalists Thursday setting up today’s final round, the girls awards were handed out as the 36 female competitors concluded play, with Kurosky barely missing what would have been her second tournament championship this month after winning the one-day Glendale Open on July 1.

“This is two good rounds because I haven’t been playing as well as I wanted to.

Even when I won, it was a decent round,” Kurosky said of her 84 at Glendale Lakes Golf Course. “So hopefully this gets the ball rolling and I can start shooting like this more often.”

With just one stroke separating Harrast and Kurosky, a regret or two from Kurosky’s round were inevitable. The Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne recruit said hole No. 14 – a par-4 that she double bogeyed – was the only hole at which she’d like another crack.

“My driver was just very bad, and then I wasn’t in a good spot for putting, and I three-putted,” Kurosky said.

St. Charles North sophomore Gianna Furrie placed eighth in the girls field, following up her Round 1 83 with a 79 on Thursday. Furrie’s round was highlighted by a long birdie putt on the par-5 fourth hole. Furrie said she enjoys taking aim at par-5s.

“I like being able to have three shots on comfortably but then able to still have a birdie opportunity,” Furrie said.

On the boys side, Geneva sophomore Graham Lillibridge was among three local golfers to make the cut. His two-day 148 – a 73 on Wednesday followed by a 75 – required back-nine resilience Thursday.

“I three-putted five of the nine greens on the front side, and that’s not like me at all,” Lillibridge said. “But I battled through it on the back and shot 2-under and played a lot better, so feeling pretty good going into tomorrow knowing I played a good back side.”

Lillibridge has played minimal golf this summer because of his hockey commitments; he is a defenseman with the Chicago Mission. Despite a strong freshman golf

season at Geneva, Lillibridge is undecided if he’s going to stick with high school golf.

“I’m still trying to figure that out,” Lillibridge said. “I haven’t made necessarily a decision yet. I still have to talk to not only the new boys coach (Eric Hactzel) but also I have a new hockey coach [with the Chicago Mission], so I need to see if they can be lenient at all, but it’ll be tough to do both considering you have tournaments that you need to leave school and you have nine-hole matches for conference right after school, and then I have to go to hockey, and I still have to do schoolwork at the same time.”

Also advancing were Sugar Grove resident Luke Hoss, a Marmion junior who fired a 1-under 70 on Thursday after shooting a 76 in the opening round. His 146 lands him in a tie for ninth place, 10 strokes back of leader Andrew Huber of Winnetka.

Joseph Sherman, of St. Charles, shot a 2-over 73 on Thursday as part of his twoday total of 151, which turned out to be the cut-line for advancement to the final round.

Kaneland product Brody Kuhar (75-78) narrowly missed advancing with his 153 while Ronnie Griggs, of St. Charles, followed his 76 with an 80 on Thursday to finish at 156.

Stefanos Lekkas committed to becoming a Catamount this week, but not before he joins the Stampede.

The Elburn-bred goaltender and former Kaneland student will open his collegiate hockey career at Vermont in either 2015-16 or 2016-17, depending on how he evaluates his growth with the Sioux Falls (S.D.) Stampede, the United States Hockey League club that still holds his rights.

“In the hockey world, it’s pretty normal,” Lekkas said.

“Usually, it takes a year or two to get [to college]. I’m just excited that it’s not over with, but that I’ve reached a decision. There’s not as many distractions, almost.”

Lekkas proved to be a sturdy force for the North American Hockey League’s

Springfield Jr. Blues last season, compiling a 2.32 goals against average and 92.7 save percentage while tallying a league-best 1,340 saves. His games (46) and minutes (2,736) ranked third in the NAHL, as he finished 19-21-6.

After the season, the 18-year-old joined the Stampede for the USHL stretch run and playoffs. Making a relief appearance against visiting Omaha in his league debut April 5, he stopped all 12 shots he faced in 31:31 of ice time.

While Lekkas knows that’s a small sample size, he’s also sure it’s not a bad place to start in the top junior league in the nation.

Although he’s uncertain about when his Vermont migration will come – “It’s kind of up to me,” Lekkas said – the move continues a whirlwind that offers at least an endurance test to Lekkas’ 5-foot-11, 170-pound frame.

Marmion product Matt Fazio has tuned up for his junior season at Dayton by playing at Royal Fox in St. Charles.

FAZIO FINDING TIME FOR GOLF Ask Matt Fazio about balancing golf with a summer internship at Northwestern Mutual, and his words eventually sway the scale.

“The way I kind of view summer golf in the offseason, it’s more to just keep the competitive juices flowing,” Fazio said. “I’d love to do well in the tournaments. However, if I don’t, it’s not the end of the world. I’m just trying to not get rusty, if you know what I mean.”

No worries there for the Marmion graduate and Dayton junior. Although his internship occupies more than 40 hours of his time each week, Fazio still finds room for various summer qualifiers, as well as rounds at his home course, Royal Fox Country Club in St. Charles.

“Whatever the schedule allows” really is more ample than he initially thought.

That bodes especially well lately, considering a recent history with back issues. Fazio experienced muscle spasms in his back during the first part of his sophomore season at Dayton and was limited to only two tournaments and five total rounds.

FROM THE TEE Kevin Druley He averaged 82.4 strokes in that span, off the pace of his freshman season, which saw him average 79.3 in seven rounds.

Thus far, his top tournament as a Flyer remains the Detroit Golf Club Invitational as a freshman, when he tied for 19th with a two-day 147.

“I have a pretty bad back right now, so I’m always trying to keep that as good as possible,” Fazio said.

“But sometimes that’s not the case and it keeps me out.”

Fazio’s internship required him to get licensed as a life and health insurance representative, so if things ever get really balky, he literally could have himself covered.

More importantly than keeping Fazio off his feet for extended periods, the challenging summer work has offered a peek into his possible future.

“I’m basically fully immersed in

the financial world with that position, which is pretty cool,” he said.

“It gives me a good idea of how this would go as a career.”

One potential – if not lofty – alternative recently hit close to home, as Fazio learned that Naperville North product Raymond Knoll had qualified for this weekend’s PGA John Deere Classic in Silvis.

Knoll, who’ll be an Iowa sophomore in the fall, was a frequent contemporary of Fazio and several other Chronicle-area athletes in past summer IJGA and CDGA events.

One of them, Wheaton Academy graduate Blake Biddle of St. Charles, informed Fazio of Knoll’s feat during a round early this week.

“That’s pretty awesome, you know,” Fazio said. “I’ve heard that he’s just been doing really well out in the college circuit as well as now the John Deere Classic.”

The St. Charles Men’s Tournament stood at slightly more than half of full capacity as of Thursday afternoon, with Pottawatomie Golf Course assistant pro Bill Ogiego reporting 49 entries. The event, which implemented a series of changes for 2014, can accommodate a 96-player field. The deadline to register is 7 p.m. Sunday. Players must sign up a the Pottawatomie pro shop.

Two-time defending champion Matt Daly is among the returners, and his challengers include six-time men’s champion Rich Balla and two-time champ Randy Spring.

Citing a steady decline in participation, Ogiego and club pro Ron Skubisz moved the tournament from a three-weekend format to two, eliminating qualifying and opening the event to those from outside St. Charles. Players must have a CDGA or USGA handicap, which determines flighting. The match play tournament begins July 19 and concludes the next weekend, July 26 and 27.

Kaligian memorial Saturday Ray Kaligian III still holds Geneva’s boys school record for lowest nine-hole score.

The late former Viking once shot a 32 at Mill Creek, where on Saturday his family and friends will gather for the inaugural golf tournament in his honor, an 18-hole scramble beginning at 1 p.m.

Kaligian died from carbon monoxide poisoning in his Houston home in February 2013, with his dog, Willie, at his side.

Stories recalling all aspects of his life have been shared many times since, and figure to form a backbone of this event and those to come.

“You learn so much about somebody after they pass,” said tournament organizer Bryan Knapp, Kaligian’s longtime friend and former teammate. “Some of the stories I’ve heard about Ray over the last year or two really reinforce what kind of guy he was.”

As we get set for Bourbonnais, Rosario has the edge, solely because of his familiarity with the offense, but it should be a very open competition. Mulligan has fantastic size (6-foot-4, 267 pounds) and plenty of game experience following seasons with the Patriots, Rams and Jets. Mastrud, who signed post-minicamp, also has imposing size for a blocker and fared well in that department for the Raiders last season. Miller may be the best pass catcher of the group.

We can’t count out the Bears adding yet another tight end to the competition at some point. They were fortunate that Bennett didn’t miss a game last season, but will want a better plan behind him.

Contract situations (infor-

mation via Sportrac): Bennett is under contract through 2016 and will get a base salary of $4.8 million this season, so there isn’t any issue with Bennett for the time being.

Rosario, Mulligan, Mastrud and Miller are all signed to veteran minimum deals.

If someone steps up and not only makes the team, but makes an impact, he could get a multiyear deal with a little guaranteed money next offseason, depending on how the franchise views the position.

Keep an eye on: Miller.

No, not that Zach Miller.

This one is 6-5, 236 pounds and had 41 catches in 2009-10 for the Jaguars, but has not played in a game since 2011. He made a few eye-opening catches during OTAs and minicamp, and with Onobun gone, may be the best receiving threat of the backups.

A dual-threat quarterback in college, Miller has intriguing athleticism and, if he can prove himself as a blocker, could surprise and be the team’s No. 2.

Commission approves Wrigley plans

CHICAGO – The Chicago Commission on Landmarks Thursday unanimously approved the Cubs’ latest renovation plan for Wrigley Field, which includes five new outfield signs on top of two that have already been approved.

Before the vote on the $575 million plan, commission staff director Eleanor Gorski had recommended acceptance of the proposal with no major changes.

Today: Tight ends Overview: The Bears can feel good about their decision to spend big at tight end last offseason on Martellus Bennett, whose 65 catches in 2013 rank second all-time for Bears tight ends in a single season.

He played in 90 percent of snaps, fighting through some nicks and bruises to prove to be the Bears’ answer as an every-down tight end.

The key for Bennett this year is to stay healthy and provide more for the team as a blocker so it doesn’t need to use an extra offensive tackle as often like it did with Eben Britton.

In camp, we know what we’ll see from Bennett – big catches over the seam and plenty of highlights off the field when he meets the media – but the focus at this position, again, will be on the competition behind him.

Dante Rosario returns after playing in 17.2 percent of snaps last season, though this is his first trip to Bourbonnais: he was traded to the Bears prior to Week One last season.

Blocking tight ends and offseason additions Matthew Mulligan, Zach Miller and Jeron Mastrud round out the group, as Fendi Onobun – a Bourbonnais favorite – was cut following minicamp.

Niski is playing with California-based Bring it Promotions’ Midwest Under-22 team, which will play matches in Croatia, Montenegro and Italy over a 12day period.

“I traveled to Italy, Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic with my club volleyball team the spring before I came to JMU,” Niski, a 2012 East graduate, said in a release. “Traveling, [sightseeing] and playing overseas is such an amazing experience, and I feel so lucky that I am able to do something similar again.”

Niski has started all 57 matches in her James Madison career.

In 2013, she finished second on the team with 329 digs and third with 220 kills.

Formed in the Chicago area in 1975, the band will perform a musical tour of the decades featuring traditional bluegrass standards, original compositions by band members and professional songwriters, and songs from other musical genres performed in the bluegrass format.

After enjoying a hot dog lunch, the children, ranging in age from kindergarten to those entering fifth grade, participated in a variety of hands-on activities at different stations during the two-hour camp.

The younger children compiled and compared body part measurements, such as “How many wrists make a waist?” and competed in “Subtraction Drag Racing.” The older kids worked as a group to learn about problem solving at Lulu’s Arcade. Both groups used Microsoft Surfaces to supplement some of the activities.

Immanuel Lutheran School teachers Penny Suydam and Julie McFarland coordinated the event, along with volunteer help from congregation and staff members, middle-school age church members and Immanuel middle school students.

Immanuel will host a summer science camp on Wednesday, July 16.

Batavia resident receives garden club award

North Central College junior Rachel DiPietro of Batavia is a recipient of the Marie Mackenzie and Mary M. Quilty Memorial Scholarship from the Naperville Garden Club for the 2014-15 academic year.

The scholarship assists an academically-qualified student who is majoring in biology, states a release. In addition, DiPietro is minoring in environmental studies.

DiPietro was selected by the college’s biology faculty to receive the $750 award. DiPietro’s name regularly appears on the dean’s list of scholars, which requires a grade-point average of 3.6, the release states. She is a member of the biology honor society Beta Beta Beta and will serve as its treasurer next year, states the release.

DiPietro also has served as a summer intern at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle.

She has presented her academic research at North Central’s Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research and worked with science faculty on its research during the college’s summer undergraduate

Small Chevrolet Sonic excels in big ways Although a small car, the Chevrolet Sonic is big in several ways.

One, the trunk on the sedan (hatchback available) measures 14.9 cubic feet, which is comparable in size to that of a midsize sedan.

The Sonic officially is a compact car, so the trunk size is noteworthy. For more storage room, the split rear seats can be folded down for access to the trunk, which is carpeted, lighted and relatively square.

Also, leg room in the rear seating area is remarkably spacious. Six-footers will not want to sit here too long, but they could easily endure shorter trips. In front, the leg room can compare, once again, to that of a midsize sedan. It officially is 41.8 inches, and midsize sedans are in the 42 to 44 inch range.

A top-of-the-line RS model was tested recently, and it was equipped with the turbocharged 1.4-liter, 138-horsepower, inline four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The manual helped the RS to average slightly more than 30 miles per gallon (unleaded regular) of gasoline in mostly suburban – with some highway – driving. The Environmental Protection Agency rates the car at 27 mpg city and 34 mpg highway.

The turbo can accelerate this front-wheel-drive, five-passenger sedan from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than eight seconds with one person aboard. Media testing has done it in 7.7 seconds.

The factory, to avoid controversy and lawsuits, settles for eight seconds.

It is a peppy powerplant and the manual shifting is nifty.

Sound and climate controls are on a screen and they are relatively simple to navigate. All is relegated to pushing an icon, symbol or number on a screen and this can be annoying. Why not have a knob or two for volume and station changes?

a five-star rating for safety by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There are 10 airbags on board. But, let us not forget, this is a light car that weighs less than 3,000 pounds and bad things can happen in collisions with stationery light poles or a heavier moving vehicle. If that does happen, though, the manufacturer says 85 percent of the Sonic is recyclable.

For a subcompact car, at 14.9 cubic feet the trunk was huge. Groceries for the family, beverage coolers

and suitcases fit in nicely without having to fold down the rear seats. The option to easily fold down the seats adds versatility to an otherwise small car that had good leg room in the rear seats, at least for an average-size adult. Two children would have no problem sharing the back seat.

Warranty coverage is three years or 36,000 miles, five years or 100,000 miles on the powertrain and for roadside assistance. Scheduled maintenance is free for two years or 24,000 miles.

‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ tops ‘Rise’

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now As the end credits for this follow-up to the prequel of “Planet of the Apes” were running and I was basking in the satisfaction of not only having seen a great sequel but also a great movie, I was distracted by some commentary from a couple of disgruntled critics sitting in front of me.

“There was, like, 20 minutes of unnecessary anti-gun rhetoric in this movie,” complained one. “Yeah, and why did they have to keep going on and on about the power struggles?” grumbled another.

Really? This is what these poor suckers got out of this film? Maybe next time they should just sit back and enjoy, instead of looking for some sort of deep meaning that isn’t there.

“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” is hitting screens three years after “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” breathed fresh air into a once hot franchise that stumbled badly when Tim Burton’s sloppy reboot came out in 2001. The solid prequel went back to the source of how Earth’s apes began to take control of the planet from the humans. This sequel’s storyline picks up 10 years later, well after a “simian flu” has run from human to human and, with a survival rate of 1 in 500, has decimated the population. There are a large number of survivors who were immune to the virus, but they’re spread out and, at least in San Francisco, where this story is set, their power supply is running low. They have plenty of guns and ammo, but not much else.

Meanwhile, the ape population is doing quite well, building up their own society in the woods around the Bay area, communicating mostly with hand signs (not to worry, there are subtitles), hunting for their food, and getting by just fine without the need of any power source, and certainly without any humans getting in the way. In fact, no humans have even been seen for about two

This all turns into a study of two very different societies – one that’s quite content living off the land, and one that wants to get back to its glory days. Can they work together to achieve their goals? It would be safer to bet on something like that happening in today’s House of Representatives than in the film’s San Francisco setting.

The questions being asked here range from the apes discussing whether they should attack the humans to the humans discussing whether they should attack the apes.

But things get a lot more complicated than that simple

plot. Some quality script time is spent developing the characters of the heroes from each side: the human leader Malcom (Jason Clarke) and the ape leader Caesar (voiced and motion capture-acted by Andy Serkis). There’s also a well-structured look at the lead villains from each side: the humans’ trigger-happy Carver (Kirk Acevedo) and the apes’ scarred and angry Koba (Toby Kebbell, replacing Chris Gordon in the previous film), who is still fuming at his treatment by humans back when he was in captivity (yes, you need to see the first film to understand this character better).

The writers take the extra step in the building of parallel structures by also showing the similarities and differences between the families of Malcolm and Caesar. Nice touch there! As is the idea of humans fearing apes, and apes mistrusting humans. That part of the story goes even further when it starts to focus

on the ideological differences between conflicted but seemingly benevolent Caesar and possibly insane Koba, and between hopeful Malcolm and suspicious politician-type Dreyfus (Gary Oldman, who is stuck with some weak dialogue and not fully fleshed-out characterization).

The film’s visuals are fantastic, from the sights of hordes of apes moving through treetops to the astounding action sequences when war in the city is presented in all of its thrilling, violent chaos. “Rise” was a very good film. “Dawn” is a better one. A still-untitled third film is scheduled for 2016.

• “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” is written by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver and Mark Bomback and is directed by Matt Reeves. The film stars Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman and Toby Kebbell. It is rated PG-13.

Dear Abby: When I was a child, my parents skipped my elementary school graduation. For that matter, everyone did. My grandfather had just died, so Mom was mourning his loss. Fast-forward a few years – nobody attended my junior high graduation, either.

Granted, Mom had a couple of stitches in her nose because my brother had accidentally hit her with a golf club the week before.

Well, my younger siblings just graduated from elementary school, and my parents have again skipped the event due to their work schedules. A mix of emotions is resurfacing for me. I’m angry and frustrated. I’m 26 now, and a long time has passed since they disappointed me, but I guess I haven’t ever truly forgiven them for missing those events. After all, these are once-in-a-lifetime milestones for a child, right?

Am I justified in feeling anger toward my parents for deciding to miss not only my graduations, but

Diskectomy can relieve pain caused by herniated disk Dear Doctor K: I have a herniated disk that’s been bothering me for more than a year. I’ve tried exercise, medication and complementary therapies. None have helped. What are my surgical options?

Dear Reader: Let’s start with a brief anatomy lesson. The human spine consists of a column of interlocking bones called vertebrae.

They surround and protect the spinal cord. Vertebrae are stacked on top of each other. In between each pair of vertebrae is a little shock-absorbing cushion called an intervertebral disk.

Intervertebral disks – think of miniature jelly doughnuts – prevent the vertebrae from scraping against each other. A normal disk has a jelly-like center (the nucleus) and a tough outer covering.

As we age, the disk’s nucleus begins to dehydrate, harden and lose its jelly-like property. The outer shell starts to tear, thin and weaken. As the disk deteriorates, it loses its ability to absorb shocks, making the affected vertebrae more susceptible to injury.

A herniated disk – also called a “slipped” or “ruptured” disk – occurs when the inner core of the disk bulges through the outer

There are 31 pairs of nerves that come out of the spinal cord, one of each pair going to the right and left sides of the body. Each nerve carries fibers that send signals from the brain to muscles.

That’s how we move. If we want to walk, the brain sends signals down to the nerves connecting to the muscles of the legs.

Each nerve also carries fibers that send signals from the body to the brain – signals indicating sensations such as heat, touch or pain. Pressure on the nerve roots can cause inflammation and resulting pain in the back and leg.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) gives a much better picture of the vertebrae and the disks than simple X-rays. When I was a medical student, X-rays were all we had. That made it much harder to know if a person’s back pain was due to a herniated disk and whether surgery might be needed.

Most people with herniated disks recover within several months without surgery. Since that hasn’t been true for you, disk surgery may be needed.

A common type of disk surgery is diskectomy. During the procedure, the surgeon makes an opening in the spinal canal, through which the spinal cord passes. The surgeon removes any disk material that has fragmented and escaped into the spinal canal.

If part of the herniated disk is protruding into the spinal canal, compressing a nerve root, the surgeon will trim the bulging portion. (I’ve put an illustration showing a herniated disk repair on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

There are many variations on this standard diskectomy, but all of the procedures are designed to relieve pressure on the spinal nerve roots.

A study funded by the federal government found that males gained an average of 5.6 pounds, while females added 3.6 pounds. One out of six of the first-year students added 10 or more pounds during the first year of college, while 6 percent gained a whopping 15 or more pounds!

Things get worse the second year. At the end of their sophomore year, males weighed an average 9.5 pounds heavier than when they began college, while females added 9.2 pounds. And since males have a much larger body frame, the weight gained by females is surprising.

Doctors say that those students who continue to gain weight during their college years seem to have “learning patterns” of gradual weight gain that could spell trouble way beyond graduation.

Students generally overeat because of pressure to “ace” that big exam.

Knowing that the trend is to add unwanted pounds when attending college, it is important to snack on healthy foods.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 16 and earn spending money by being a conscientious babysitter. I love little children, and I’ve also taken the Red Cross course for babysitters. I also charge the parents a reasonable amount for taking excellent care of their most “precious possessions.”

When she saw me working on my math, she became irritated and told me that if I ever babysat for her again, she would prefer that I keep an eye on the children even when they are sleeping.

I was really surprised because no parent has ever told me not to do my homework after the children are asleep.

All I could say was, “Yes, ma’m,” but I will never babysit for her again.

I am sure you would approve of a sitter doing her homework when the children are asleep.

George Whitefield, a renowned preacher in England and the American colonies who died in 1770, said: “Press forward. Do not stop, do not linger in your journey, but strive for the mark set before you.”

In yesterday’s deal, I mentioned the Rule of Seven, which a declarer in a no-trump contract might find useful. If he has one top-trick stopper (typically the ace, but maybe the king if third hand takes the first trick with the ace), he adds together the number of cards in the suit led that are in the dummy and his hand.

He subtracts the total from seven and holds up for that number of rounds.

Does that apply to this deal?

South is in three no-trump. West leads his fourth-highest spade and East puts up the queen.

Declarer starts with seven top tricks: one spade, one heart, four diamonds and one club. The other two winners can come from clubs. But if the club finesse is losing, is South in any danger?

In yesterday’s deal, the club finesse was into the East hand.

If South had won the first trick with his spade ace, East would have won with his club king and returned a spade through South’s jack-nine, giving West four tricks in the suit for down one.

Here, though, the finesse is into the West hand. South has two spade stoppers if he takes the first trick, crosses to dummy with a diamond, and runs the club 10. Yes, West wins that trick, but he cannot cash out the spades.

If South ducks trick one, though, East can lead his remaining spade, establishing West’s suit while West has the club king as an entry.
