I try not to eat fast food all that often, but for those heading to Culver’s in St. Charles last week, diners were in for a pleasant surprise.

Several Kane County Sheriff’s Office deputies greeted customers in the drive-thru

lane, and a few were even seen delivering food to tables inside of the restaurant and wiping down the seating areas.

Residents give feedback to Fox River fire district officials ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Officials of the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District on Thursday met with residents to talk about what the district’s next moves should be in light of a failed referendum in April.

Voters defeated the dis-

trict’s rate hike request by a 3-1 margin in April, election records show.

Some of the roughly 10 residents who attended the Thursday meeting think the district needs to put another referendum question before the voters, but suggested officials change their approach from the previous effort.

“There seemed to be more

emphasis on finance, equipment and budget … and not enough focus on the hardship of firefighters who work in the district,” district resident Dave Stohler said. “You have to present it in a more human fashion.”

Some of the district’s firefighter/paramedics left for better paying jobs and have not been replaced, said Bob

Handley, the district’s board treasurer.

Campton Hills resident Jayne Holley said the district should emphasize the extensive training the firefighters and paramedics receive, as well as the change in response that could come with a smaller district staff.

Active River Task Force, design team share ideas with community

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A team of officials and consultants continues to develop big plans for the Fox River with the help and feedback of the general public.

The team Tuesday held an open house for the Active River Project, which aims to maximize the Fox River’s potential and enhance its recreational, ecological and economic impact through infrastructure and program changes.

Various ideas shown for the project so far include extending and completing the St. Charles Riverwalk; extending the Fox River Trail on both sides of the river north of the railroad trestle; adding an observation platform on the unused railroad space; creating a children’s stream and modifying the dam in downtown St. Charles to create a paddling course north of the Main Street bridge.

“We think that [the Fox River] holds the key to St. Charles’ identity and prosperity,” said Rick Hitchcock, president of Hitchcock Design Group, on Tuesday.

The group is the lead consultant on the project. Hitchcock gave a 65-minute presentation Tuesday laying out the current river strategy and design concepts. About 150 people attended the open house, which was at the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center in St. Charles.

Hitchcock shared a tentative 10-year timeline ending in 2025 to begin implementing the various aspects of the project.

His design group worked on the Naperville Riverwalk and other similar projects across the country.

Hitchcock said he and the other planners hoped the new attractions on the river would be accessible to everyone.

Since the project still is in its early planning stages, the only financial figure Hitchcock shared Tuesday was that the project collectively would cost millions of dollars.

Different attractions could be implemented over different periods of time, based on avail-

able funding, Hitchcock said.

The St. Charles River Corridor Foundation has set up an endowment fund that would go toward maintenance and upkeep of the Fox River in St. Charles, said John Rabchuk, the foundation’s vice president and Active River Task Force chairman, in a previous interview.

Lebrun wants the foundation to continue to let interested parties know how they can contribute to the project or donate. Lebrun attended the workshop and asked about how the water volume in the river would be maintained for the proposed changes.

Lebrun has lived near the Fox River for 29 years. She was one of several people who left an unsigned posted note on poster boards at the presentation with various questions about the project.

St. Charles resident Margaret Morgan said her unsigned posted note asked the planners

to complete the St. Charles Riverwalk first because that is the feature she uses the most.

Morgan said after the open house the project was ambitious and wondered if all the attractions could be implemented. She also wanted to hear about the ecology of the river, which was briefly mentioned during the presentation.

“I’m in favor of the dam coming down if it improves the health of the river,” Morgan said.

Morgan also was in favor of the project if it could help St. Charles fill empty storefronts and provide more wholesome activities for families.

Questions also arose during the presentation about how making changes to the river would affect the sediment.

The Fox River is heavily regulated, and no changes could be implemented if they were deemed to have a negative impact on the environment, Hitchcock said.

What’s next?

The project team plans to review and discuss the residents’ written and verbal comments before updating its presentation for a July 23 special meeting before the St. Charles City Council and the St. Charles Park District Board, Rabchuk said.

The team also plans to further discuss addressing questions on the project’s cost and return on investment, according to an agenda released Thursday for an Active River Task Force meeting Monday.

Glenn said he has great confidence in Hitchcock and said his group knows how to bring the right features to St. Charles based on their past work.

ST. CHARLES – The Fox Valley Repertory Performing Arts Academy has named one of its newest leaders, according to a news release.

Patrick Stinson was appointed as Fox Valley Rep’s latest managing director, and he begins work there Monday, the release stated. He replaces current Managing Director Colleen Tovar, who is leaving the organization after 11 years to teach at Ball State University, according to the release.

Stinson is a Chicago-area native who has been working in theatre for more than 20 years, the release stated. He has been involved with Fox Valley Rep for several years as director of the musical “The Winter Wonderettes,” as well as several Fox Valley Rep youth ensemble musicals, including the current summer production of Disney’s “Beauty & The Beast Jr.” As managing director, Stinson will be responsible for supervising and facilitating all operations of Fox Valley Rep and its Performing Arts Academy at Pheasant Run. By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE TOWNSHIP – The J.A. Air Center at the Aurora Municipal Airport is hosting the Experimental Aircraft Association’s World War II B-17 bomber, Aluminum Overcast, this weekend for tours and rides.

The airport is at 43W636 Route 30, near Sugar Grove The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses were used extensively in World War II bombing missions over German industrial targets, according to a World War II database website, ww2db.com.

The Aluminum Overcast will fly at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon and at 1 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday, at a cost of $449 for nonmembers and $409 for members.

Olivia Rasmus, air tours program coordinator, said flight tickets could be reserved by calling 920-371-2244.

All tickets will be sold onsite, she said.

Ground tours will be from 2 to 5 p.m. The cost is $10 for adults, $20 for families. Tours are free to active and retired military and children younger than 8 years old, Rasmus said.

“We tour the country, hitting about 40 cities,” Rasmus said. “We try to honor veterans at every tour stop. We try to get a World War II vet up on the plane to relive the moment.”

The Experimental Aviation Association is a nonprofit organization of aviation enthusiasts, devoted to inspiring new participation, according to its website, www.eaa.org.

GENEVA – Young adults ages 19 to 39 are invited to a picnic hosted by The Catholic Brew, an outreach ministry of St. Peter Catholic Church in Geneva.

“There was a need in the Fox Valley area for outreach ministry that targets a special population,” said Laurie Brown, the high school and young adult minister at St. Peter. “There is a uniqueness to young adults. There is a lot of programming for families or teens or children in religious education programs, but not for young adults.”

Although the events are Catholic-sponsored, events are open to any young adult, she said.

Called the ultimate picnic, the gathering will be at 12:30 p.m. Sunday in the south pavilion at Wheeler Park, 822 N. First St., Geneva. Participants should bring a dish to share. Hot dogs and lemonade will be provided.

Brown said she and St. Peter’s pastor, the Rev. Martins Emeh, created The Catholic Brew this year, with some programs focusing on topical issues. Others are purely social.

The name comes from the definition of brew, which

means “a mixture of events, people, or things that interact to form a more strong whole,” Brown said.

Their first event at St. Peter drew 36 people from 20 parishes in Rockford, Loves Park, Wheaton, Northern Illinois University and locally from St. Peter, Holy Cross in Batavia, and St. John Neumann and St. Patrick in St. Charles.

Guests from the John Paul II Renewal Center in Sycamore spoke on “Authentic Love in a Real World,” Brown said.

Most stayed nearly two hours after the program ended at 8:30 p.m. and made plans to go somewhere else, Brown said.

“This is our own initiative, our own wanting to support young adults in the area,” Brown said. “It’s neat that so many parishes are coming together to support this. It’s wonderful.”

Mosquitoes test positive for West Nile near Elburn KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com A batch of mosquitoes collected near Elburn recently tested positive for the West Nile virus, according to a news release from the Kane County Health Department. It marks the first batch to test positive for the virus in Kane County this year, the release indicated According to a surveillance report posted at the department’s website, the batch that tested positive was collected between June 28 and July 4.

Also as part of its West Nile program, the health department is collecting dead birds to be sent to the state lab for testing, the release states. Residents may call 630-444-3040 to report the presence of freshly dead birds – such as crows or blue jays – to determine whether West Nile virus testing is recommended. The birds must not show any signs of decay or trauma.

According to the release, West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird.

Most people with the virus have no clinical symptoms of illness,

but some may become ill three to 14 days after the bite of an infected mosquito.

About two out of 10 who are bitten by an infected mosquito will experience any illness, according to the release. Illness from West Nile usually is mild and includes fever, headache and body aches, but serious illness, such as encephalitis and meningitis, and death are possible.

According to the release, the best way to prevent West Nile disease or any other mosquito-borne illness is to reduce the number of mosquitoes around the home and to take personal precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Precautions include:

Tornado tears town but not St. Charles residents’ spirits

By MADELINE HAPPOLD mhappold@shawmedia.com On June 22, multiple tornadoes ripped through northern Illinois, including through the small town of Sublette in Lee County. The town is home to Woodhaven Lakes, a private recreational campground, where St. Charles North High School graduate Collin Mikottis, 17, and his sister Kayla Mikottis, 13, have spent summers relaxing on their family’s plot of land.

The EF2 tornado that hit Sublette resulted in the strongest tornado damage rating within Lee County since July 8, 1993, according to www. weather.gov.

With a path length of 7.8 miles, the EF2 tornado saw 130 mph winds; its aftermath included significant tree damage in the camping area, with many trees toppling onto recreational vehicles.

As they watched the news unfold on TV, the teens could only envision the unknown damage to their family’s beloved lot, which was home to their grandparents’ special trailer they bought for their anniversary.

“There was a feeling of uncertainty,” Collin Mikottis said.

“I was in disbelief,” added

Kayla Mikottis. “You never think those things will happen to you.”

Yet, the Mikottis family focused on the sun after the storm. The next day, Collin and Kayla Mikottis decided to design a shirt with the phrase “Woodhaven Strong” to benefit victims of the tornadoes.

Using social media, Kayla quickly took to Facebook to help advertise their campaign and received rave reviews.

“Everybody loves T-shirts,” Collin Mikottis said. “I just thought it was a good way to raise money.”

After only a week of sales, the Mikottis family had exceeded its goal of 1,000 shirts, selling more than 1,200 shirts and raising $9,082 to benefit the Lee County United Way. From there, the money will be distributed to the American Red Cross, Amboy Fire Department and Sublette Fire Department.

The siblings were surprised their small idea had blown into something big.

“I was excited thinking that many people wanted to be a part of it,” Kayla Mikottis said.

Even though the Mikottis family has been able to help rebuild the Woodhaven Lakes area, they were unable to completely undo its aftermath. Visiting Woodhaven Lakes that

Saturday, June 27, the Mikottis family saw its sacred trailer was one of the unlucky structures ruined by the tornadoes.

Knocked from its foundation, part of the trailer had been crushed by an enormous tree and completely totaled.

“I immediately broke down crying,” Kayla Mikottis said.

“It was completely wooded before, and now there’s an insane lack of trees.”

Even with the disheartening news, the Mikottis’ desire to help remained strong.

“I didn’t dwell on it,” Collin Mikottis said. “There’s not much you can do besides move ahead.”

Fueled by their experience and the positivity of the first T-shirt sales, the Mikottis siblings are extending their campaign until Sunday. They are considering keeping the fundraiser going another week, expecting a spike once shirts are delivered.

On July 17, Collin and Kayla Mikottis also will be recognized by the Woodhaven Lakes area for their efforts.

• Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are most active, especially between dusk and dawn. Use prevention methods whenever mosquitoes are present.

• When outdoors, wear shoes and socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt, and apply insect repellent that includes DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus according to label instructions. Consult a physician before using repellents on infants.

• Make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens.

Repair or replace screens that have tears or other openings.

Try to keep doors and windows shut, especially at night.

• Change water in birdbaths weekly. Properly maintain wading pools and stock ornamental ponds with fish. Cover rain barrels with 16-mesh wire screen. In communities where there are organized mosquito control programs, contact your municipal government to report areas of stagnant water in roadside ditches, flooded yards and similar locations that may attract mosquitoes.

Born: April 28, 1929; in Chicago, IL Died: July 8, 2015; in Elgin, IL James R. Klinkhamer, age 86, of Hampshire, formerly of East Dundee and Carpentersville, retired Carpentersville Chief of Police and Chairman of the Kane County Sheriff’s Merit Commission, passed away on Wednesday morning, July 8, 2015, at the Advocate Sherman Hospital surrounded by family.

Jim was born in Chicago on April 28, 1929, and was the son of the late Carl and Winifred Klinkhamer. On Dec. 11, 1948, he married Dolores H. “Dee” Krizek. Jim was a resident of the Carpentersville, East Dundee and Hampshire areas for almost 60 years.

Jim’s entire professional career was spent in Law enforcement. He served as former Carpentersville Chief of Police for 20 years retiring in 1979 and for 24 years, Jim served as Chairman of the Kane County Sheriff’s Merit Commission.

He was a longtime member of the Kane County Chief of Police Association and a member of the Carpentersville VFW Post 5915.

Jim was also a very proud United States Marine having served in W.W. II and the Korean War. Survivors include his beloved

wife and best friend of 66 years, Dee; their sons, Dan (Sue) and Jim Klinkhamer. Other survivors include his grandchildren, Lindsey (Pat), Leslie, Steven, Kevin, Julie (Aaron), Hayden, Kenzie, Chloe and Hudson; his great grandchildren, Anna, Kaden and Sophia as well as many good and faithful friends.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his son, Steven A. Klinkhamer on August 1, 2001; and his brother, Charles Klinkhamer.

Less competition in health insurance isn’t always bad BLOOMBERG NEWS

A wave of consolidation is sweeping through the U.S. health insurance industry.

Most recently, Aetna has offered to buy Humana, and more such mergers are on the way. That must be bad news for consumers, right? Not necessarily.

As a rule, less competition is bad, because it means higher prices – and that’s the last thing U.S. health care needs.

But health care is a complicated business. The likely effect of these mergers on the cost of insurance isn’t so clear-cut.

The Justice Department, in deciding whether to oppose these deals, will have to weigh a variety of factors. It’s possible, for once, that less competition might do consumers a favor.

The crucial complication in

health insurance is that consolidation in a different part of the health care industry is already well advanced. For good reason, the Affordable Care Act encouraged sellers of health care services – doctors, hospitals and other providers – to link up and coordinate their offerings. Better coordination, according to the designers’ reasoning, was the key to reducing unnecessary care and rewarding providers for good outcomes rather than the number of services supplied.

That reasoning was correct – but the result has been an increase in the size of provider networks, as hospitals merge with physician groups and each other. This encourages coordinated care, with teams of providers working together to prevent and manage diseas-

es at every level of treatment, but it has a side effect. Health care networks have gained market power to raise their charges to insurers; in turn, the insurers pass those increases on to their customers.

Containing costs is part of what Obamacare promised, and the need is pressing.

From 1999 to 2014, average annual premiums for employer-sponsored family health coverage tripled, from $5,791 to $16,834. If you’re wondering why you haven’t gotten much of a raise recently, the high and rising price of U.S. health care services – in some cases, multiples of what the same services cost in other developed countries – is a big part of the answer.

Coordinated care is an essential cost reducer, but increased bargaining power on

the provider side of the industry threatens to undo some of the benefit. In most developed countries, responsibility for controlling prices falls on the government; in the U.S., with its aversion to such interference, the job has long fallen to private insurers. For this to work, insurers need to bargain with providers on equal terms.

Within limits, consolidation in the insurance industry can serve this purpose.

You might ask: What’s to stop bigger and more powerful insurance companies from simply pocketing the benefits of lower medical costs, rather than passing them on to consumers?

Obamacare has a provision that helps. The law says that large health plans must spend at least 85 percent of the money they take in from premiums

on health care expenses. If an insurer’s medical spending falls short, it must refund the difference to customers. Most big insurers have medical spending that hovers around that level, so if increased market power drives down prices, premiums should follow and customers should benefit.

Case by case, a balance has to be struck – enough consolidation among insurers to drive down costs at the provider level, but not so much as to put buyers of insurance at a disadvantage.

The Justice Department is rightly tasked to prevent mergers that “substantially lessen competition,” but it has discretion in applying that threshold to particular markets and in weighing whether a merger can also create new efficiencies.

To the Editor: Thoughts on the Confederate flag reveal we are products of revisionist history. The railroads and those “too big to fail” banks did not cotton to “a house divided.” Honest Abe had his marching orders.

The Civil War was fought to preserve the Union. Slavery was a toss up; it could go either way with new states coming into the Union.

The Civil War was fought for much the same reason all wars are fought: money and power.

The Confederate flag needs to be preserved as it honors those Southern men who died in vain for territorial and legislative freedom. They were being shackled by the federal government.

I am going to purchase and display a Confederate flag. I believe in the people’s right to secede, not only from the Union, but from the state. I support our right to secede from Crook County. I want a leveler governing field. I want to be ruled by my peers, not by the Chicago mob.

Five golfers advance to final round IJGA Junior Amateur

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – As the second round of the IJGA Junior Amateur at Mill Creek Golf Club wound down Thursday, many golfers entered the clubhouse with their first glance directly to the TV screen showing the scores.

With the top 30 advancing to today’s final round, most knew whether they had done enough to play for a third day.

Geneva residents Andrew Abel and Devin Johnson, as well as Batavia’s Andrew Nelson put themselves in a good position with their low first rounds Wednesday.

All three shot plus-3 in their opening rounds, and shot well enough Thursday to make the cut which was posted at 10-over par.

Abel came out, starting on the back nine, and played 2-under through his first nine holes and finished the day at even par. Not only was his score tied for the lowest of the day, but also put him one shot off the lead heading into the final round.

“I hit a lot of fairways and greens and made puts when I gave myself the chance,” Abel said. “I knew I had a good amount of breathing room and knew if I put up a good number today, I would make it to Friday. If I stay calm and control my emotions tomorrow, I think I’ll give myself a good chance.”

Abel’s success put a damper on the rest of the field, but his good friend Johnson will also play today after shooting a second straight 3-over 74, which puts him four shots back of leader Jordan Less of

Less shot a 2-over 73 on Thursday after shooting 1-under par in the opening round to hold a one-shot lead.

Johnson, an Aurora Christian junior, joins St. Charles product and Burlington Central junior Joe Sherman at 6-over entering today’s round. Johnson gained some momentum early after sinking a 25-foot putt for birdie on the first hole, but said he plans to take a different approach than normal today to give himself a realistic shot of finishing close to the top.

“I’m definitely going to be more aggressive tomorrow,” Johnson said. “Maybe try to

reach a few par 5s in two. ...

I wanted to shoot the same or better than I did (Wednesday) to guarantee myself a spot. I shot the same both days, so consistency was there, but I know that score is going to have to improve to finish higher.”

Now to the Gianna Furrie ever-calm Nelson, whose father, Brad, seemed more concerned about the scores on the screen than Andrew did coming into the clubhouse. Andrew Nelson didn’t really seem to be fazed by too much, but more

just one who takes care of his business on the course and doesn’t say much.

His round consisted of a few more struggles than some counterparts, but he still made the cut, shooting a 5-over 76 to enter today six shots off Less’ lead.

Nelson played a birdie-free round, but again channeled a strong finish. Playing in tight situations brings out the best in him.

“I was kind of scrambling all day,” Nelson said. “I made some clutch putts down the stretch and played the back nine really well again. I’m pretty good in situations where I know what I have to

do to advance, and I like being in those spots because I seem to play well.”

Aurora Christian’s Brett Seward also made the cut.

On the girls side, St. Charles North’s Gianna Furrie had a strong second round to finish the 36-hole tournament tied for third.

Furrie, the 2014 Kane County Chronicle Girls Golfer of the Year, was playing in her first tournament in almost two months after injuring her elbow in May. She injured the elbow playing at Mill Creek and had not golfed up until Wednesday’s first round.

Her 2-over 73 was tied for the lowest score Thursday, and Furrie was happy to see the injury didn’t have any effect on her game.

“It was just great to be back out there,” Furrie said.

“It was nice to pick up right where I left off. I think I was very consistent today compared to (Wednesday). I probably could have shot just as good or even better yesterday, but I got sloppy at the end. Today I didn’t let that happen and converted all the way through my round.”

In this installment, we check in with Matt Erickson, who played for the club in 1998 and now is a veteran Midwest League manager.

In many respects, Kane County, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this season, reminds Erickson of Wisconsin, which commemorated its 20th season in Appleton in 2014.

Although the Timber Rattlers draw from a smaller immediate area, the pull of the parent Brewers extends to fans statewide.

“And I think they understand the part of it that the priority is player development, you know, and it’s not always wins and losses,” Erickson said. “However, they appreciate good baseball whether you’re winning or losing.”

Wisconsin entered Thursday’s game against the Cou-

gars playing .333 ball, winning just 28 of its 84 games.

Such circumstances might produce crustiness in a manager and tension in a clubhouse, but Erickson has worked diligently to avoid tension. He still organizes themed travel days – “Usually something comfortable,” he says – and converses casually with players while pedaling on the stationary bike outside his office.

ENEVA – Wisconsin Timber Rattlers manager Matt Erickson allows his 10-year-old son, Maddox, to take batting practice alongside Midwest Leaguers.

Erickson reasons that “I feel comfortable with him out on the field without him killing himself,” a patience that permeates his entire managerial approach.

Now in his fifth season guiding the Milwaukee Brewers Class-A affiliate in his native Appleton, Wisconsin, Erickson, a former Cougars infielder, finds an even keel to be his most prized asset.

“When you first start coaching, you’re so eager to help, you know. And you want to help everybody and you want it to happen now,” Erickson said. “Kind of like when you’re playing, you know. Everybody wants results now. And I think as you get into it, as you become more mature as a player and more mature as a coach, you’ll understand the importance of the progress. The progress and the process.”

Erickson’s on-field process spanned from 1997 to 2006, as he explored the systems of three of the National League’s most recent entrants.

The Florida (now Miami) Marlins drafted him out of Arkansas in the seventh round in 1997, three years after Erickson declined to sign with the Brewers when the club made him a 57th-round pick after he graduated from high school.

Erickson played in 311 Triple-A games for the Marlins from 2001 to 2003 but did not reach the big leagues until a brief 2004 stint with the Brewers. He closed his career in the Diamondbacks system.

He was a career .296 hitter in Triple-A and batted .300 in 3,458 minor league at-bats overall. In 1998, his lone season with the Class-A Cougars, he hit .324 with four home

During the ample windshield time spent driving between those cities earlier this week, the left-hander realized something.

Heading southwest ultimately points him in the right direction: home.

Traded from the Philadelphia Phillies organization to the Arizona Diamondbacks along with fellow Class-A pitcher Chris Oliver in a deal exchanging international bonus pool slots, Taylor, 22, was born in Phoenix. He attended high school in Peoria, Arizona and began his college career at Scottsdale Community College, home of the Fighting Artichokes.

Mere hours after greeting his new teammates alongside Oliver, who started Thursday night, Taylor earned the victo-

ry in a 15-5 home rout of Wisconsin, spacing three runs, six hits, four strikeouts and three walks in 5⅓ innings.

“Especially pitching the first day I meet them is kind of just that bang, bang, bang,” Taylor said. “ It’s like, ‘All right. This is what I have. This is what I’m going to do.’ OK, this is what we want and what we’re going to do. And that’s just basically how it worked out.”

Cougars pitching coach Doug Bochtler stored away valuable initial data in seeing Taylor, who admitted his velocity felt off Wednesday but struck out 83 batters in 77⅔in-

nings at Lakewood.

“When you’re dealing with somebody like this, it’s watching every little detail of that person so you can notice when things change,” Bochtler said.

“It’s watching his mannerisms when he’s warming up and seeing that they change over the course of the outing. But he came into it and gave us a real good outing and was nice and strong.”

Oliver, 22, a fourth-round right-hander out of Arkansas in 2014, threw a side session Wednesday with Bochtler on hand.

Oliver was 4-5 with a 4.04 ERA in 13 starts over 69 innings at Lakeland with 32 walks and 27 strikeouts. In the commute from New Jersey to Illinois, he also provided a welcome sounding board for Taylor after the pair developed a friendship during instructional league last winter and 2015 spring training.

Return of the Mack: Outfielder Quinnton Mack, the first member of the 2015 D’backs draft class to join the Cougars, collected his first Midwest Quinnton Mack L e a g u e h i t Wednesday, putting him 43 behind his father, Quinn, a Burlington Bees outfielder in 1987.

Quinn Mack played 10 more seasons in the minors after signing with the Montreal Expos organization that year.

His professional career included a five-game stint with the Seattle Mariners in 1994, sparked by a 3-for-5 day in his major league debut in which he shared the outfield with Ken Griffey Jr. and Jay Buhner.

Quinnton Mack wasn’t born until 1992, so he recalls more of his dad’s final days in the minors than anything.

Quinn Mack batted .274 in 3,128 at-bats.

“I just remember he still raked, regardless,” Quinnton Mack said. “He could hit.

Even though he didn’t get the chance as much as most people, he still had a long career.”

Mack pays homage to his dad with his walk-up music, Mark Morrison’s 1996 R&B hit “Return of the Mack.”

Quinn Mack used the song late in his career. Quinnton Mack said he didn’t think his uncle, Shane, a major league outfielder for parts of nine seasons, followed suit.

Quinnton Mack, a 35thround pick from New Mexico State, joined the Cougars after batting .222 in 18 at-bats for Short-A Hillsboro.

By THOMAS KUEBEL editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Battling through nine innings Thursday, the St. Charles East baseball team found a way to hang on and win the Terry Ayers summer wood bat tournament championship at East Side Sports Complex with a 5-4 win over Conant.

East starting pitcher Jon Recchia threw four innings of no-hit ball to pace the Saints in the early going despite starting on only two days’ rest.

“I felt good enough and told coach I could go,” Recchia said.

The Saints scored a run in

the bottom of the second inning before a third inning that saw Nos. 4-5-6 hitters Monty Carbonell, Thomas Adams and Corbin Marucco knock in an RBI apiece to bump the Saints lead to 4-0.

In the fifth, however, the Cougars got to Recchia, knocking in a run on two hits before leadoff hitter CJ Deshazer launched a three-run home run to tie the game in the sixth.

That knocked Recchia out of the game before his bullpen came to the rescue. Scoreless innings by Keegan Kochis, Steve Podany and Steve Abruzzo allowed time for the offense to produce the winning run.

The Saints threatened in

the eighth inning with runners on the corners and one out, but a double play on a tag attempt at the plate ended the inning. Cougars reliever Josh Pozniak, a left-handed side-armer, pitched three scoreless innings for Conant, allowing only three base runners while striking out one.

The scoring threat in the eighth pulled him out of the game, and with the top of the order up for the Saints in the ninth, East collected three hits in a row as Austin Gift drove home John DelloStritto (2 for 3, two walks, two steals, one run) for the walk-off finish.

“Our kids didn’t put their heads down. We had an oppor-

tunity to win in the sixth with a runner on second,” Saints coach Len Asquini said. “We went to extras and other guys got opportunities to throw and guys got put into pressure situations, and that’s what we are looking for.”

Abruzzo picked up the win for the Saints, who improved to 23-7 in summer play and head into the Phil Lawler Summer Classic state series as the No. 2 seed in their own regional.

Kaneland (25-7) is the top seed. Higher-seeded teams host early round games before the semifinals (Wednesday) and finals (July 16) shift to East.

“Be honest with them,” Erickson said. “When they’re doing something wrong, tell them and show them. When they’re doing something right, tell them.

And be consistent with the message. And if you can stay true to that, I think as a coach, you’ll earn some respect, you know. And that doesn’t mean everything’s going to go right, but everybody knows that you’re trying to be honest with everybody and give everybody a chance to fulfill their potential.”

July, despite being more like April, is full of events, family outings and, for some of us, another birthday.

Reflecting on the recent Independence Day, much was said about freedom. We heard – once again – how hard the fight has been to retain our precious freedoms.

The notices about the forthcoming Chris Walk, a fundraiser to support individuals with substance abuse addiction, reminds us that so many in our communities have lost their freedoms of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Addictions kill. Some addicts commit crimes to fund their habit and go to jail, leaving families torn with frustration and a feeling of loss.

Vicki Foley’s son, Chris, was a heroin addict for 10 years before he lost his life to an overdose.

Putting aside the choice to be silent,

Technology grant to help refugees, immigrants learn English KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com AURORA – World Relief DuPage/Aurora recently received a grant from The Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley to purchase updated technology for its English as a second language classes in Aurora.

With the grant, World Relief – a faith-based relief and development organization that offers services to foreign-born residents – will be able to equip its job skills and English language classes with 20 laptop computers for its adult refugee and immigrant students, states a news release.

According to Karen Jealouse, WRDA education director, the use of technology in the classroom is becoming increasingly important for the ESL student, the release states. The new laptops in the Aurora classrooms will help refugees and immigrants learn English and allow students to improve their computer literacy.

“Not only is technology helpful in their actual language acquisition, it’s a must in today’s world,” said Jealouse in the release.

“The refugees and immigrants enrolled in [the World Relief DuPage/Aurora] ESL classes have a true desire to contribute to their new home community in Aurora.”

The workstation will be equipped with a laptop computer, a document camera and a projector, allowing teachers to implement more visual tools into their instruction, the release states.

The new computers will be purchased over the

summer, and students will begin using them in the classroom starting in September, the release states.

Each year, World Relief’s Aurora location serves more than 200 ESL students from around the world, including many who have escaped persecution, torture and war, the release states.

“The refugees and immigrants enrolled in WRDA’s ESL classes have a true desire to contribute to their new home community in Aurora,” said Tim Kustusch, WRDA partnership manager, in the release. “This generous grant from the community foundation will give them the tools needed to contribute to the civic, social and economic fabric here in Aurora.”

The Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley is a non-profit, philanthropic organization that administers individual, charitable funds from which grants and scholarships are distributed to benefit the citizens of the greater Aurora area, the Tri-Cities and Kendall County, according to the release.

Angioplasty not the answer for mini-strokes Dear Doctor K: My wife had a mini-stroke. The doctor said she has a narrowed artery in her brain. Can’t the doctor open it up with angioplasty, as he would if she had a narrowed heart artery?

Dear Reader: “Mini-stroke” is another name for a transient ischemic attack, or TIA. A TIA causes stroke symptoms that last 10 minutes or more, but less than 24 hours. A TIA is a warning sign of an impending stroke. Four to 10 percent of people who have a TIA will go on to have a full-blown stroke.

Both mini-strokes and fullfledged strokes are usually caused by narrowed arteries in the brain.

The underlying cause is the same as it is for artery blockages in the heart. It’s atherosclerosis – fatty deposits that enlarge and become plaques. If a plaque ruptures, a clot may grow to obstruct the artery. Or, a blood clot may form elsewhere in the body, travel to the brain, then lodge in a part of the artery that is narrowed by plaque.

Balloon angioplasty has a successful track record in opening arteries in the heart. In this procedure, a catheter with a deflated balloon at the tip is threaded into

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff the narrowed artery. The balloon then inflates to open up the blockage. Often, a wire mesh stent is left behind to keep the artery open.

It seems natural to think that this procedure would also be an option to open blocked arteries inside the brain. But studies comparing angioplasty to medicines for narrowed arteries in the brain have been disappointing.

A study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association once again compared the two treatments. The study included more than 100 people with narrowed arteries in the brain who had suffered symptoms such as a TIA. The people were assigned at random to be treated with angioplasty and stent or with just medicines.

Here were the outcomes in the angioplasty group (listed first) and the medicines-only group (listed second): brain hemorrhage in the first 30 days (24 percent vs. 9 percent); stroke or TIA in the first year (36 percent vs. 15 percent);

increased disability score (24 percent vs. 11 percent).

The doctors were trying to do something for their patients, something that seemed likely to help them. Instead, they were doing something to their patients that ended up hurting them. The study was promptly stopped.

So forget about angioplasty.

Instead, your wife should focus on other strategies that may help prevent another TIA or stroke.

For example: • Keep blood pressure in the normal range (less than 140/90).

• Keep cholesterol levels healthy.

• Maintain a normal weight.

• Don’t smoke.

• Stay physically active and exercise at least 30 minutes per day.

Your wife’s doctor may also prescribe blood-thinning drugs, which can help prevent blood clots. In addition, cholesterol-lowering statin drugs may help prevent strokes, even in people with normal cholesterol levels.

I smoked some marijuana and got high. I did it because I wanted to know what all the fuss was about smoking pot. It was strictly a one-time “learning” experience and it really wasn’t much fun at all. I have never touched the stuff since and I don’t plan to in the future.

Now I’m worried.

In summer school, our health teacher told the class that the chemicals in marijuana can stay in the human body for a long time after you use it. It really bothers me that these chemicals are floating around inside me. If I had known that, I never would have tried the stuff in the first place. Is there anything I can do to speed up the elimination of these chemicals? – Nameless, Garden Grove, California Dear Nameless: Some of the chemicals in marijuana stay in the body for an extended time because they’re fat-soluble. That means they seek out the fat cells of the body and burrow in for a relatively long stay. Alcohol, on the other hand, is water-soluble and passes through the system in 24 hours.

But you can relax. Since it’s been six months since you used marijuana, chances are better than 99 percent that your body is free from the drug’s effects.

Frank Whitehouse, a teacher at the University of Michigan, became intrigued with test taking and conducted a threeyear research project on the subject. After analyzing hundreds of answer sheets and tests taken by medical, nursing, pharmacy and dental students at the University of Michigan, Whitehouse found that the majority of students who changed their answers actually improved their scores.

When you play bridge, keeping some statistics is not a bad idea.

For example, in a duplicate (or during a social game) note how many times your opponents went down two or more. If several, you did not double enough.

How often do you find the best opening lead? Treat each one with care, though, because the “right” opening lead will not always turn out to be best in a given deal.

After South opened one notrump, North used Stayman. When South rebid two hearts, North’s slightly aggressive jump to three no-trump announced a four-card spade holding and asked South to retreat to game in that suit if he also held four. Here, of course, South passed out three no-trump.

What should West lead?

The books tell you to lead the top of three touching honors against a no-trump contract. However, here, how are the spades distributed?

North is known to have four, and South has two or three. This leaves East with two or one. If East has a singleton, the suit will be useless. West should hope that his partner has a doubleton, preferably honor-doubleton. And not to block the suit, West must lead the seven, fourth-highest from his longest and strongest.

Here, East should win with his ace and return the suit, which defeats the contract. The defenders must get four spades and one heart.

Even if South wins with dummy’s spade king and runs diamonds, finessing through East, West can discard two hearts.
