Film bringing back memories Documentary tells of route local couple walked

I

n about 40 days, St. Charles resident Drew Pistilli and his wife, Sarah, walked from SaintJean-Pied-de-Port, France, to Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

The couple, who celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary along the way, completed the 500-mile journey through Northern Spain as part of the Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage route dating back to the Middle Ages.

The trek, which has been hailed as an inspirational and spiritual journey in Brazilian author Paulo Coehlo’s “The Pilgrimage” and actor Emilio Estevez’s film “The Way,” also is the subject of the recently-released documentary “Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago,” which is premiering Friday at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago.

Pistilli, 35, who is a member of the American Pilgrims on the Camino Chicago chapter, said he is looking forward to the film’s release and hopes it will “bring back the memories and feelings of that place in that time” of his life.

and adventure-oriented, but that “everybody’s purpose for being on the trail is unique and different.”

The 90-minute, nonprofit documentary directed

and produced by veteran filmmaker Lydia B. Smith spotlights the lives of six pilgrims as they follow their own paths along the ancient route.

The characters, whose motives and nationalities vary, include an overly goal-oriented American, a Canadian widower walking the route in honor of his wife’s memory, a young Brazilian woman whose life has hit rock-bottom, and a French woman traveling alongside her atheist brother and 3-year-old son.

“I wanted the film to be an accurate representation of the kind of people you

meet and the things you hear and the things you see,” said Smith, who deemed the Camino a life-changing experience after completing it in 2008. “Even if you’re not interested in the Camino, I think it’s an inspirational tale to watch other people in their real-life journeys.”

Pistilli, who has walked the Camino twice, said the journey was a learning experience, and he hopes the film will inspire others to make the trek.

“If there’s one thing I learned, it’s when your life is simpler, it’s so much easier to see that God is working in your life.”

STC parking lot project to begin Monday

This is a rendering of what the municipal parking lot in downtown St. Charles will look like after a $1 million renovation project is complete. Residents are advised to use other parking areas during the project’s construction, which begins Monday.

Municipal Building will be closed during construction.

Motorists should use the south entrance, which will remain open throughout the project, the release states.

The parking lot located on the southeast corner of the Municipal Building (also known

as the “checkerboard lot”) will stay open, as well. However, parking will be limited to 30 minutes from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Monday to Friday.

The post office box and city drop box currently located in the parking lot near the police department will be relocated

during construction to a spot north of the corner of State and Riverside avenues.

At various times, sidewalks along Riverside Avenue will be closed and marked with detour routes. The riverwalk directly adjacent to the parking lot will be closed during construction.

The project will provide more green space for residents and visitors, improve landscaping along the Fox River and provide a public plaza for art displays or gatherings, the release states. Improved traffic flow patterns, walkways and lighting will enhance pedestrian safety in the lot.

Much-needed replacement of a water main, electric systems and storm sewer infrastructure also will be completed, the release states.

A-Lamp Construction was selected as the contractor, and the city secured a $65,000 grant from the Kane County Riverboat Fund for the project.

Because cataracts are the world’s leading cause of blindness and affect nearly 22 million Americans aged 40 years and older, there is a great deal of curiosity as to why and how they form. The most recent research on the matter shows that one of the crystallin proteins in the eye lens may be primarily responsible. Of the three water-soluble proteins found in the eye, two help form the structure of the lens. The third crystallin protein helps keep the other two from clumping together and forming a cataract (clouding of the eye lens). According to researchers, there is a finite number of these “helper” proteins, and when they are gone, the lens is more vulnerable to cataract formation.

P.S. The information about cataract formation discussed above may someday lead to new preventive treatments.

ST. CHARLES – The $1 million renovation project for the municipal parking lot in St. Charles is slated to begin Monday, according to a news release from the city.

Residents are advised to use other parking areas during construction on the project, which should be complete in time for this year’s Scarecrow Festival in October.

Portions of the lot will be closed starting Monday as construction workers start setting up equipment, said Lisa Garhan, community and public affairs coordinator. The entire lot will be unavailable within a week or so from the start of the construction.

The municipal parking lot is directly north of the St. Charles Municipal Building, at 2 E. Main St. in downtown St. Charles. The project will replace the existing lot, bordered by the Municipal Building, the St. Charles Police Department, the Fox River and Riverside Avenue, according to the news release. The new lot will have a similar parking space count.

‘He should have lived a lot longer’ Safety seminar in Maple Park aims to prevent any future train-related tragedies

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Visitors who headed to Wednesday night’s railway safety seminar at the Maple Park Community Center walked past a large white cross that sat on a table, featuring Parker Wolfsmith’s name.

Wolfsmith, a 14-year-old Kaneland Harter Middle School eighth-grader, died in May after he was hit by a train at a rail crossing in Maple Park. Police have used the term “breezing” to describe how they say Wolfsmith tried to get as close as he could to a train before he was hit.

On Wednesday, the teen was mentioned often, with Maple Park Police Chief Mike Acosta mourning the death of someone so young, and police and Union Pacific train officials seeking to drive home the message that trains are dangerous.

Among those in attendance were Wolfsmith’s mother, McHenry resident Amy Opfer, and his sister, Summer.

Also, police said two of the teens in attendance were with Wolfsmith on the night of his death.

“He should have lived a lot longer,” Acosta said of Parker Wolfsmith. Josh Salisbury, a youth program coordinator with the Maple Park police, said officials were “hoping to prevent anything like this from ever happening again.”

Jim Mangner, a special agent with Union Pacific, warned that it takes 5,280 feet for trains to stop. He said it’s dangerous being on or near the tracks and that “being bumped by a train is like being bumped by a bulldozer.”

He said people who look to social media or YouTube to view videos of people performing risky actions near trains should realize that there are differences between trains in the United States and in other countries. And stunts in movies, he said, don’t demonstrate how dangerous trains can be.

“A lot of things you see in the media happen only in the media,” he said.

Swing, jazz event set for Oct. KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A musicand dance-filled event benefiting local groups will be held this fall in downtown St. Charles.

The fourth annual Rhythm on the River will be held Oct. 19 on South Riverside Drive between Main and Walnut Streets and inside the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., in St. Charles. While the event has featured a bluegrass concert for its previous three outings, the style of music this year will be swing and jazz for an overall 1930s theme, according to a news release.

“We have structured this entire event to bring some excitement and fun to downtown St. Charles while also providing some of the best jazz in the country,” wrote Robert Brown of the St. Charles Rotary in the release.

The day starts off at noon

The performers inside Arcada include gypsy jazz band Alfonso Ponticelli and Swing Gitan. The group is one of the premier examples of gypsy jazz music, which grew out of the Paris club scene in the 1930s based on the unique guitar sound of Django Reinhardt, according to the release.

The event will also feature Fat Babies, which is a group that plays 1920s and 1930s music. The performances will begin at 3:30 p.m. and conclude at 6 p.m. Select downtown St. Charles restaurants will offer dinner specials to those who show their Rhythm on the River ticket stubs, according to the release.

Tickets will be $30 for adults and $25 for children.

The event is a fundraiser for the St. Charles Rotary and the River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles.

“This should be a great event for the entire community,” Richard Southorn, event chairman and River Corridor Foundation member, wrote in the release. “We have attempted to model this after the highly successful Jazz Lawn Events in New York City and make it an annual tradition of bringing new forms of music and entertainment to St. Charles.”

Police: Elburn man lost $5,300 in scam

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – A 33-year-old Elburn man last week lost $5,300 in what police are describing as a scam, Elburn Police Chief Steve Smith said.

Smith said the man, who lives in the 700 block of North First Street, received a call July 3 from someone claiming to be an IRS agent. Smith said the caller told the man he owed back taxes and that he needed to deposit $2,500 into a bank account if he wanted to stay out of jail. The man deposited the

money.

After that transaction was done, Smith said, the man received another call. The caller told the man that the Elburn Police Department had a warrant for his arrest, and that he needed to deposit another $2,800. The man again deposited the money, a total of $5,300, Smith said.

Days later, Smith said, the man told friends about the incident, and the friends told him that it sounded like a scam, and he should call the police.

Smith said he doesn’t believe the man owed any money, but

the caller convinced him that he could go to jail if he didn’t do as he was told.

“They talk a good game,” Smith said.

He said it would be “very difficult” to recover the money because “these people cover their tracks.” He said if residents encounter such calls, they should hang up and call the police.

The incident is the latest of several in the Kane County area in which police or residents suspected a scam.

Transportation spending for year projected to drop

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – County departments on Wednesday began telling Kane County Board members how they plan to spend taxpayer money next year.

More departments are expected to share their proposed 2015 budgets during today’s

Energy and Environmental Committee meeting and Friday’s Judicial and Public Safety Committee meeting.

Wednesday’s presenters included the Kane County Division of Transportation during the Transportation Committee meeting.

KDOT presented an $81.3 million budget, about $700,000 less than for 2014. The budget was developed using several guiding principles, including a focus on public safety, job creation, maintenance and essential public services, Deputy Director of Transportation Tom Rickert said.

KDOT staff said capital

projects account for 86 percent of the funds. Seventy-six projects – including bridges, intersections and new roads – are budgeted for 2015, but only five are new, Rickert said, noting most projects take three to five – and even up to 10 – years to complete.

For example, the Anderson Road extension in Elburn is among the highway projects budgeted for 2015.

In an update to the committee, staff shared photos of the progress, specifically of scrapers placing soil in the low areas of the new road. The project is expected to be done by summer or fall 2015 depending

Ken Anderson, the county’s environmental and water resource division director, said the funds will go toward turning hole No. 1 into a driving range and the construction of a new hole No. 1.

The agreement stipulates that any grants awarded in connection with the golf course improvements shall be returned to the county for deposit in the landfill fund, Donahue said.

The Kane County Transportation Committee on Wednes-

day recommended approval of agreements with Union Pacific and the Blackberry Township Road District about the project, which is supported by a $250,000 grant from the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

Committee Chairman Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, said the project stems from the dense population in Mill Creek, which

is south of the tracks. A resolution about the project describes how the trains upset the “rural peace” of Blackberry Township.

“The west line tracks of the UP carry about 111 trains a day, with each train blowing its locomotive horn at all hours of the day and night as the trains approach LaFox Road from both the east

and the west,” the document states.

NIU task force takes aim at sex assault National scrutiny helps prompt group’s creation

By KATIE DAHLSTROM kdahlstrom@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Raquel Chavez thinks more Northern Illinois University students might report sexual assaults if only they knew where to turn.

Making it easier for sexual assault survivors to access resources will be one focus for Chavez, a senior at NIU, as well as a dozen university officials in the next three months.

University President Doug Baker announced Wednesday that he has formed a task force to address concerns about sexual assault on the university campus.

Twenty people will meet weekly before making recommendations to Baker on how to enhance sexual assault policies, procedures and resources Oct. 1.

“I hope that women and men, when they’re assaulted, feel they have somewhere to go,” Chavez said.

Baker said the decision to create the task force stemmed from a review by

a task force President Barack Obama created earlier this year in response to complaints about how some universities treated campus rape victims.

“It’s an issue nationally, and we want to be proactive,” Baker said. “I think we’ve got a pretty good data set, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do everything we can.”

In 2012, there were 11 forcible sexual assaults reported on NIU’s DeKalb campus, according to the most recent safety report the university completed under Doug Baker the Clery Act. A forcible sexual offense is defined as one committed on a person against his or her will or on a person who is incapable of consenting.

In 2010, there were six forcible sexual offenses reported, and in 2011, seven were reported.

However, those numbers don’t necessarily reflect the number of such crimes that actually occurred on campus. According to a White House report, only 2 percent of survivors who were sexually assaulted while incapacitated and 13 percent of forcible rape survivors report the crime to campus

or local law enforcement.

Although NIU offers several resources to students, such as self-defense classes, counseling, advocacy and health services, Chavez believes students might not seek help if they don’t know about the programs.

Beyond examining what resources are already available, task force recommendations will deal specifically with how to comply with amendments to the Violence Against Women Act and the Clery Act, which requires universities participating in federal aid programs to compile statistics on reported crime on and around campus.

Universities must expand the categories of crimes reported under the Clery Act to include domestic violence, dating violence and stalking.

The university also will need to

adopt new student discipline policies to address and prevent sexual violence on campus as part of the White House Task Force recommendations made earlier this year.

To task force co-chairwoman Lesley Rigg, NIU’s vice president for research and innovation partnerships, the first task force meeting Tuesday made it clear the university has layers of resources to assist students from the prevention to survivor stages. But how those resources interact could be enhanced.

“What I learned is, most of the pieces of the puzzle are there,” Rigg said.

“We – and I mean everyone, DeKalb, Sycamore – need to put the pieces together.”

She said within a year, the task force would seek feedback through a survey adapted from a federal survey that will measure where the NIU community would like to see improvements. In the meantime, she wants the campus community to know resources are available.

“What I would love is for students to know what is available, who they can turn to when they need help,” Rigg said, “and for those services to be available to more than just students.”

Attorney Joseph Agnello began representing the 17-year-old sometime after the teen’s previous court appearance on June 17. On that date, he appeared with Wally Werderich of the Kane County Public Defender’s Office, but Werderich was not representing him in all of his cases.

The 17-year-old appeared Wednesday before Judge Thomas Mueller in juvenile court for a status hearing, wearing a bright blue jail shirt and dark pants. He also was accompanied by two customary transport officers.

The teen, along with Kayla N. Magnuson, 22, of Geneva, was charged with felony counts of robbery and armed robbery along with retail theft, a misdemeanor, in connection with an armed robbery that took place June 11 at the Batavia Wal-Mart at 801 N. Randall Road, according to court documents.

Dorm sweet dorm Recently, I was able to go through the process of picking my dorm for college. I definitely knew that I wanted to live on the honors floor because I want the extra focus and to meet people with similar academic goals.

The kids who wanted to live on any themed floor got to sign up online before the general student population. The day the website opened, I had to work in the morning, so I didn’t get to pick out my room until the early afternoon. I knew I wasn’t the first one to sign up, but was surprised that – by the time I logged onto the site – there were only a couple quads left.

My school only assigns random roommates; a lot of the kids use Facebook to pick out potential matches and post open slots.

Since people aren’t always truthful on social media, I decided it wasn’t worth my time; if someone is willing to go random, they know they have to be at least a little open-minded. I know that everyone seems to say this, but I’m really not that picky when it comes to my idea of “perfect” roommates. As long as they don’t party in our room and stay out of my stuff, I’ll be all good.

Now, I have to wait a few weeks to find out who my three random roommates are. Being in a quad has is benefits – if I don’t become BFFs with one girl, there will be two others to ease the tension. But it also has its drawbacks – like zero privacy and no builtin storage. I can picture move-in day turning into a full-on “Hunger Games” scenario for space, where my stackable milk crates have a pretty good chance of winning.

LIFE AT EAST Brigid Ackerman roommate – random or picked – it’s really just hit or miss. While everyone may have good intentions, tensions can run high when you’re living with someone 24/7. I haven’t shared a room in years, which will require some adjustment on my part, but I also haven’t been living on an island all my life, either.

I also have to admit that I am not into the whole matching-bedspread thing.

I’ve already bought a good amount of my stuff, and I am not returning any of it to coordinate with the rest of my dorm. Attempting to find four different complimentary colors will become very close to turning into a rainbow, which I don’t think is worth the trouble.

Besides, the T-shirt quilt my mom made me is way too adorable to sacrifice.

In the end, I know that my college experience will be made up of more than my room number and bunk-bed configuration.

There will be new friends to meet, exciting classes to be taken and countless adventures to be had!

P.S. Now that Kurt Zepeda’s duties are done, I’ll be writing my column every week through the end of September, when the next high school columnist(s) will soon take over.

Clear rules for clean water THE WASHINGTON POST Lawmakers, mostly – but not only – Republicans, are seeking to undermine the twin foundations of Environmental Protection Agency authority: the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. In both cases, Congress should back off.

The agency badly needs clearer rules on which bodies of water it has the power to regulate. This clarification has been needed since a pair of Supreme Court rulings last decade left murky the definition of “waters of the United States,” a core Clean Water Act term. Environmental groups complain that this uncertainty has led agency personnel to hold off on enforcing the act in places

where it almost certainly has jurisdiction. Everyone can agree that the EPA can regulate the Chesapeake Bay and the large rivers that feed into it. But what about the streams that lead into those rivers? The wetlands and ponds adjacent to them? More isolated headwaters that are hydrologically related? The EPA claims authority over all of these.

Many Republicans condemn that claim as a lawless and virtually limitless power grab – “The Obama EPA is trying every scheme they can think of to take control of all water in the United States,” Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., said – rather than a good-faith effort to lawfully reassert federal control over significant

waterways. It’s true that the agency’s plan would expand the scope of Clean Water Act regulation. But it also would expand the number of exceptions. Besides, the proposal is contingent on an extensive scientific review confirming the ecological need to regulate upstream.

The EPA reckons that the benefits of resource preservation and pollution control would offset the added regulatory costs. It’s past time for this definitional line to be drawn, and lawmakers’ objections aren’t convincing enough to justify forcing the EPA to start over.

If lawmakers don’t like the call the EPA is making, they should clarify the terminology themselves.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Area restaurant industry leaders share their favorite dining spots in Kane County

By KARA SILVA ksilva@shawmedia.com When chefs and leaders in the beer and wine industry aren’t slaving away in their own kitchens, breweries or cellars, they too venture into the vast dining scene of Kane County, acquiring their own lists of gastronomical haunts and culinary hot spots.

Niche executive chef Chris Ayukawa of St. Charles said the best way to discover where to eat and drink in the area is by word of mouth.

“It’s probably easy for people who work in the restaurant industry because being around food and being around service ... everyone has a heightened sense of those qualities,” said Ayukawa, who created Niche’s new menu after taking the helm of the Geneva-based fine-dining establishment in April. “If you have friends who work in the [restaurant] industry, listen to them.”

The Berkshire Pork Cheek and Grilled Lamb Chops rank among his favorite dishes on the menu he created, but Ayukawa – a self-proclaimed addict of Geneva-based Josef’s Elegante Meats & Deli sub sandwiches – said when he gets a rare reprieve from working in his own kitchen, he likes to take his wife to Bien Trucha in Geneva.

“Everything on [Bien Trucha’s] menu is amazing,” Ayukawa said. “They like to play with flavors, and the drinks are always clever.”

If Ayukawa isn’t grabbing a shot of whiskey and a cold PBR after his shift at Niche, he said – on occasion – he’ll end up with his line cooks at The House Pub in St. Charles.

“All the cooks that work here are definitely beer geeks for sure ... [The House Pub] has an excellent selection of beer, great live music and a nice atmosphere; in general that suites people of our ilk,” Ayukawa said.

Another brew-savvy patron is Batavia resident Tom Korder, the brewmaster of Penrose Brewing Company. Korder has a decade-worth of experience in the beer

industry, and when he isn’t sipping his favored Proto Gradus – a Belgian-inspired single ale – at his Geneva taproom, he’s usually at one of his favorite Geneva restaurants: A Toda Madre, Nobel House or Preservation Bread and Wine.

Nobel House – which uses Penrose’s Proto Gradus in its Beer Mussels with Fries – has a solid craft beer selection, knowledgeable staff and “they do a great job with their outlook on food with beer,” Korder said.

He cited Off Color Brewing’s Troublesome gose, a top-fermented beer that originated in Goslar, Germany, as another favorite craft beer, which is available at Binny’s and Nobel House.

Roberto Avila, owner and executive chef of Altiro Latin Fusion in Geneva, started his career in the restaurant industry as a dish washer, having since held nearly every imaginable restaurant job in roughly 11-area eateries.

When he’s not indulging in his restaurant’s Altiro tacos – pan-seared tilapia with mango salsa, pico-cucumber, arugula, chipotle aioli and Altiro vinegreta – Prince Edward Island Mussels (Al Mejillon) or Al Atun – a pink peppercorn, yellowfin ahi tuna dish – Avila enjoys Italian fare from St. Charles-based ZaZa’s Trattoria or Francesca’s by the River for their food and service.

“For me, it’s very important that [a restaurant] is taking care of you,” Avila said in regard to what makes him a restaurant repeat customer. “I don’t like when people rush me. ... The food is very important, too.”

Also a fan of Altiro’s Latin-infused offerings and margaritas is Geneva-based Chez Moi Café and Catering executive chef and owner Beth Cull, a Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef, who specializes in French fare, such as freshly-made quiches and – one of her

A St. Charles resident and married mother of two, Cull said she generally likes to cook for her children at home but enjoys keeping a low profile by dining in local pubs while out for dinner in the area.

“My husband and I are really low-key people; we’re not fancy so we tend to go to the pubs,” Cull said, adding that she enjoys the Gaelic Grilled Tilapia with white-wine caper sauce, roasted potatoes and sautéed spinach at McNally’s Traditional Irish Pub in St. Charles. “I just love that fish, and I haven’t been disappointed yet.”

Of vino connoisseurs and those just getting their tastebuds wet in the world of wine, Aurora-resident Mark Czubak, the sommelier and beverage manager of Atwater’s at Herrington Inn and Spa in Geneva, said, “The best way to know if a wine list is good or not is to ask questions about it, and see if anyone there actually knows

anything about it.”

Atwater’s and Niche are the places for wine, Czubak said, adding that The Turf Room in North Aurora and Wildwood in Geneva also have strong wine lists.

Currently, Czubak’s favorite Atwater’s wine is the Schäfer-Fröhlich 2012 pinot noir blanc de noir rosé from Nahe, Germany. But, his go-to, everday, affordable wine is the Emile Beyer pinot blanc. The Emile Beyer comes from Czubak’s favorite region for wine – Alsace, France – which he said is a key element in maneuvering a wine list.

“Pay attention to where the wine is from,” Czubak said. “A lot of people pay attention to the grape too much. What will really allow you to explore more is to pay attention to also where [the grape] is from.”

Though the places frequented by local chefs, a brewer and somm may differ, one thing remained a constant between the five of them: Service, quality and consistency tops the list in creating an ideal dining experience in Kane County.

A winemaker’s odyssey around the world Orion Stang did everything possible to become a winemaker.

Stang, now the owner of Dilécta Wines, began his journey through wine at an early age. What started with family picnics in Paso Robles and Santa Barbara County, California, eventually led him to Italy, then back home to work domestically in highend restaurants. Eventually, he would take classes at the Culinary Institute of America.

But it was a chance walk into a new winery on Anderson Road in Paso Robles, California, that led to the opportunity for which he’d long wanted.

Winemaker spotlight Stang fell for Rhone Varietals.

Syrah, grenache and mourvèdre are the wines on which he humbly honed his craft.

“When I walked into Booker, they weren’t even open yet,” said Stang when he walked into the Anderson Road winery. “They had an assistant winemaker, so I started in the tasting room. I started to show up on my days off. I was willing to work for free, and did so. For six months I farmed, drove

Gradually, Stang moved from the tasting room to the vineyard. He eventually became a salaried employee as assistant winemaker before he set out on his own in 2011.

He produced his first vintage at Herman Story Wines, where he continued to develop his winemaking skills.

“At Booker I met a lot of good contacts,” Stang said. “Russell P. from Herman Story was one of them. He has an interesting winemaking style. He’s not very worried about sorting fruit.

They are in and out. He has 200 plastic bins lined up and all these different fermenters. How he keeps track of everything is amazing, it’s wild.

“At Booker there are 12 guys sorting. We’d pull every stem and leaf.

There would be bare grapes that look like a blueberry. In my wines I will do some sorting at the winery. But, I don’t think it makes that big of a difference. The stems add some complexity, actually.”

With just over 200 cases made from a ton of syrah from Caliza and Alta Colina Vineyards and a ton of grenache from Live Oak Vineyards, Stang started small and began his endeavor to make small lots of wine with personal attention.

What to buy • Dilécta, The Tiller 2011 ($52) – Olive tapenade with a huge mouth feel.

There is great fruit in blackberry and raspberry notes that mingle with crushed rock on a long finish – 64 percent grenache, 34 percent syrah.

• Dilécta, Unorthodox 2011 ($52) – Blackberry, licorice and wild game on the palate. An iron-like minerality and underlying acidity tie together seamlessly. A 100 percent syrah blend from Caliza and Alta Colina vineyards in Paso Robles.

“That gaminess has developed the last six months in the bottle,” Stang

said. “It is fruit forward but has luscious tannins that really rounds it out.”

Local news Galena Cellars had another banner showing at the Illinois State Wine Fair. The winery in bucolic northwest Illinois won two Governor’s Cups for its 2013 Eric the Red and its new Honey/Mead wine. Overall, Galena Cellars took home 11 awards.

Wine 101 Dilécta wines is all about family.

Stang’s mother, Betty Wick, designed the wine-bottle art. His daughter has finger-painted the art on his business cards.

“My mother has been incredible my entire career,” Stang said. “Whenever I’ve wanted to take a risk, she has told me to go for it.”

Golfers take aim at Mill Creek

By JAKE BARTELSON jbartelson@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The local youth golf scene was alive and well with the colors of summer flashing on golfers’ shirts during the first round of the IJGA-CDGA Junior Amateur Tournament Wednesday.

More than 190 male and female golfers converged on Mill Creek Golf Course in Geneva, separating into a junior male pool of 156 golfers and 36 female golfers, all between the ages of 14-18, for the first day of the three-day tournament.

Experience and knowledge of Mill Creek was an advantage for local golfers like St. Charles East senior Ronnie Griggs.

“A lot of it depends where the tees are placed at. From further back, it tends to be a little bit harder … you have to put your tee shots in the right place [to] give yourself easier chances,” Griggs said.

Griggs started his morning with a bogey on a par-4, but bounced back with five straight pars. That pattern continued as Griggs paced himself with only three bogeys the rest of round one, while hitting par on the remaining holes.

After the first round, the six-year IJGA veteran Griggs is tied for 34th with eight other competitors, scoring a 76, 5

over par.

Teeing off later in the afternoon was Griggs’ golf teammate at East, Kevin Sobieski, and he agrees with the notion of the course’s difficulty.

“There’s definitely a lot of out-of-bounds,” he said. “You gotta try to keep [the ball] in the fairway as much as possible.”

Sobieski hit par on his first two holes but struggled with bogeys throughout the day, finishing with four bogeys, four double-bogeys, and a tedious hole No. 3, which resulted in a quadruple bogey. He finished with a score of 87.

Few of the challenges seemed to faze Geneva sophomore Graham Lillibridge, as he estimates he’s played at Mill Creek a combined 15

times throughout his high school season and other occasions.

Lillibridge competed at the varsity level last season, and despite being only a freshman, he played in his team’s No. 1 spot, and helped his team secure the Upstate Eight River Championship. However, Wednesday marked his first time competing at the Junior Amateur.

While he’s looking to maintain pace with the rest of the pack in terms of scoring, Lillibridge is hoping to do even better – win the whole thing.

“It’s going to take two solid days of scoring around even par,” he said. “There’s a lot of good kids here …

Drew Peters explains in several words the parameters of a baseball opportunity awaiting him at Bradley.

He captures his attitude toward it all with far more brevity.

“I’m excited to prove myself,” Peters said.

Recently removed from a two-season stint at Elgin Community College, Peters, a former Kaneland lefthander, will take a full-time spot on Bradley’s fall roster without consuming a scholarship slot for his junior season.

He is not a preferred walkon, just an experienced pitcher vying to make the Braves’ 2015 team before ideally joining Bradley on scholarship for his senior season in 2016.

“Obviously, I’ve got to keep working hard, but I’m excited,” Peters said. “It looks like a very good opportunity for me.”

Peters earned some academic scholarship money to the NCAA Division I school in Peoria after also excelling in the classroom at ECC. On the mound, he ranked fifth on the team with 252⁄3 innings in 2014 while going 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA and 21 strikeouts. His fastball velocity has hovered in the mid-80s, an attribute he’s looking to enhance while pitching with the Crystal Lake Cardinals of the Metro Collegiate Baseball League of Illinois this summer.

Fellow Kaneland product Bobby Thorson, who joined Peters on the Knights’ Class 3A state championship team in 2011, also is playing with the Cardinals as a righthander and corner infielder.

The two regularly carpool to games, but Thorson already has paved the road from ECC to Division I. Recovered from a torn ACL he suffered with the Cardinals in 2013, Thorson helped Campbell’s Fighting Camels to a Big South Conference title and an NCAA Regional elimination game against host and in-state foe

South Carolina. He pitched 51⁄3 innings of relief in Campbell’s season-ending, 9-0 loss last month.

Peters had hopes of beginning his college career at the Division I level, recalling the Braves’ interest in high school. A bone contusion in his collarbone, suffered after a collision with a teammate, curtailed Peters’ senior season in 2012.

Through it all – including visits to Indiana Tech and Division I Arkansas-Pine Bluff, which offered a full scholarship – Peters never abandoned Bradley as his “dream school.” In addition to baseball, he’s also fond of the university’s mechanical engineering program.

“I was looking there out of high school and got hurt my senior year,” Peters said.

“I’m glad I came back there.”

Tarter recovery on time: Next week will mark seven months since former Marmion lefty Tim Tarter of Batavia underwent Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow.

That puts the countdown to his return to full activity at T-minus four months and counting.

“Right in time for the season in February,” Tarter said.

Out since Dec. 16, 2013, Tarter, a Grand Valley State redshirt junior, looks to rebuild the end of his collegiate career after a series of transfers and injuries. He was looking to do so at this time last year before tearing the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow as the Lakers’ fall season concluded.

“I was feeling good and practicing all fall, but the last day of the fall intrasquad in October, I felt a snap in my elbow,” Tarter said. “And the next day I found out I had torn my UCL.” Tarter opened his career at NCAA Division I Illinois-Chicago in 2012, compiling a 5.88 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 49 innings over 19 appearances, including 10 starts.

But health issues caught up to Tarter anyway, as he underwent a procedure to fix bone chips in his left elbow in the summer of 2013, shortly before he transferred to NCAA Division II Grand Valley State in Allendale, Michigan.

Lakers coaches told Tarter he should be part of the 2015 starting rotation. His rehab regimen is heavy on strength and conditioning as well as rounds of light catch.

A recent phone call from Cadets coach Dave Rakow prompted Tarter to join his alma mater as a summer assistant. Asking about something unrelated from Tarter’s playing days – he graduated in 2011 – Rakow emerged with not only an answer, but some help.

“They respect me well; they know my past at Marmion,” Tarter said. “I help with the pitchers a lot and they listen to everything I say. So it’s been fun while it’s been

going on.”

Shah seeks fresh start: Tarter’s 19 appearances tied for second most on UIC in 2012, while his 10 starts and 49 innings ranked third.

Two years later, former St. Charles North lefty Ankur Shah sought similar exposure in his freshman season for the Flames. That the experience fell short is one reason he’s transferring to NCAA Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater.

“I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to play Division I, but I felt I wasn’t going to have the opportunity to succeed there like I was at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater,” Shah said.

Shah pitched 8 1⁄3 innings as a freshman, striking out five with a 15.12 ERA. His final appearance for the Flames came in a Horizon League tournament game on May 22, when he threw 11⁄3 scoreless innings against Milwaukee.

Having success with a Wisconsin-based team instead of against one will hinge on his

diligence in the weight room.

The 6-foot-1 Shah hopes to add 15 to 20 pounds of muscle by his draft-eligible, junior season, putting him at an optimal weight of 180.

That, coaches reason, will make him more durable while increasing the chances to get his fastball consistently around the 90 mph range.

“If I gain weight, they think my velocity will jump and you never know what will happen after that,” Shah said.

Shah stays sharp by throwing at North. His continuing ties to North Stars coach Todd Genke and assistant Terry Ayers helped open an opportunity at Whitewater, which captured the Division III national championship in May. Genke played alongside Warhawks coach John Vodenlich at Whitewater, while Ayers also is a friend.

“They are coming off a national championship and are hungry for another one,” Shah said. “It was hard to say no to that.”

In the girls division, reigning 2013 Chronicle Girls Golfer of the Year and St. Charles North sophomore Gianna Furrie isn’t spending a lot of time

worrying about high expectations.

“There’s a lot of good players here,” Furrie said. “I’m going to play the best I can, and hope for the best … I’m hoping for a score in the mid-70s.”

Furrie converted pars on her first two holes and then had back-to-back bogeys.

The theme of hitting bogeys for much of the playing field continued with Furrie, as she finished round one with seven bogeys, one double bogey, and a tough triple bogey on her final hole of her afternoon. Furrie sits in a three-way tie for 10th place with a score of 83.

Wheaton Academy transfers to make frontcourt all the more formidable

Ripening the outsized expectations awaiting the 201415 Geneva boys basketball team figured to take some doing.

How does adding a pair of towering transfers to an already formidable front line sound?

The Vikings did just that Wednesday, as brothers Chandler and Bennett Fuzak – a 6-foot-10 senior and 6-7 junior, respectively – enrolled at Geneva after recently withdrawing from Wheaton Academy.

“We’ve never played in the town that we live in, so that will be a unique experience for us,” Chandler Fuzak said. “Get connected to the people around us while we’re playing, so that will be exciting.”

Home-schooled until high school, the Fuzaks relocated to Geneva from Naperville in November, some four months before the Vikings capped a banner 2013-14 season.

With then-junior wing and NCAA Division I prospect Nate Navigato leading the way, Geneva eighty-sixed the progam’s 28-year regional title drought while winning 25 games, the school’s most since 1962-63.

Benet senior center Sean O’Mara, a 6-9 Xavier recruit, struck consistently in the Vikings’ season-ending loss in the IHSA Class 4A East Aurora Sectional title game. With the Fuzak brothers now flanking 6-7 returners Mike Landi (senior) and Loudon Vollbrecht (junior) in the paint, the Vikings find little reason to stop thinking big.

“It’ll be interesting,” said Geneva coach Phil Ralston, who’s entering his seventh season. “Obviously, they add greater depth beyond what we already have for a front line. I think that it’ll be

Chandler projects as more of a post presence, with Bennett possessing greater shooting range.

Shortly around the time the league concluded, the brothers conferred with parents Bob and Elizabeth and elected to transfer.

“It was just a series of events that kind of … we just felt led out of the program,” Chandler Fuzak said. “And we felt it was time to go.”

Warriors coach Pete Froedden was not immediately available for comment, but both Fuzak brothers wished him the best and said they will miss him and their former teammates.

One of them, Wheaton

Academy sharpshooter Josh Ruggles, already has offered the Fuzaks insight into some Vikings from his AAU experiences, which include playing alongside Navigato for Mercury Elite.

The Fuzaks also played with Navigato during a camp at Wright State in Dayton, Ohio, in June. Athletic guard Pace Temple gives the Vikings another potential returning starter.

“I’m really excited about this opportunity,” Bennett Fuzak said. “They’ve got a pretty good team as is, so I’m looking forward to finding where I can contribute to the team and stuff like that.”

Ralston, who this week attended a star-studded clinic in Indianapolis led by some

of the top coaches in the college game, hopes that first encounter comes soon.

With five days of IHSA-approved coaches’ contact remaining this offseason, he’s optimistic the Fuzaks can be part of a skills and lifting session later this month.

“As a coaching staff, we certainly want our returning players to make sure that we welcome these boys,” Ralston said. “Make them feel welcome, make them feel part of it.”

Neither Fuzak has doubts toward that end, especially as word-of-mouth about their transfer spreads.

“By association,” Chandler Fuzak said, “we’re kind of getting connected, I guess.”

Position of plenty

Today: Wide receivers

Overview: There is little question, in fact none in my mind that entering the 2014 season, wide receiver is the strongest position on the Bears roster and Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery make up the best pair of starting wideouts in the NFL. It is also possible, however, that should either Marshall or Jeffery get dinged and miss any significant playing time, wide receiver could become the Bears’ greatest weakness.

In other words, depth is a huge question.

But let’s go with the glass half full story first: When both Pro Bowlers Marshall (100 catches for 1,295 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2013) and Jeffery (89 catches for 1,421 yards and seven scores, plus 20 catches of 20-plus yards) are on the field, it is pick your poison for Bears opponents, and their defenses really can’t afford to double-team either one for fear Jay Cutler will find Martellus Bennett or Matt Forte to abuse them with.

The lone remaining doubt on Jeffery is how effective will he be if Marshall is off the field and defenses aren’t geared to stop the veteran first? At the end of the day they are the most productive duo in the NFL. The problem is that among Josh Bellamy, Armanti Edwards, Josh Morgan, Micheal Spurlock, Terrence Tolliver, Eric Weems, Chris Williams and Marquess Wilson behind them on the roster, Morgan is

Stranded men cost Cougars KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE DAVENPORT, Iowa – A lack of clutch hitting doomed the Cougars in Wednesday’s 3-1 loss at Quad Cities.

Kane County stranded nine runners and went 1 for 8 with men in scoring position. The Cougars (13-5 second half, 58-30 overall) out-hit the River Bandits, 11-6.

Quad Cities built a 3-0 lead midway through the game, reaching Cougars right-hander Daury Torrez for three runs and six hits in five innings. Gerardo Concepcion struck out three in three innings of scoreless relief, but the Cougars’ offense was unable to capitalize.

Third baseman Jeimer Candelario drove in catcher Kyle Schwarber with an RBI single in the sixth for the club’s lone run.

The Cougars must win today’s 7 p.m. series finale at Quad Cities to assure themselves of a winning record in a sixgame road trip that began in Clinton.

Gifted wide receiver corps makes Bears envy of teams across the NFL

the only one with meaningful NFL starting experience and production, should someone have to step up.

At 6-1, 220 pounds, Morgan has 199 catches for 2,488 yards and 11 TD’s in four years with the 49ers and two more, most recently in Washington.

Wilson is the guy the Bears hope can take a huge step up after drafting him in the seventh round in 2013. He was active for 10 games last year, but targeted just twice with two catches for 13 yards.

Edwards, Spurlock and Weems are career journeymen who will be in training camp more as special teams specialists than wideout options. The problem for Williams is at 5-foot-7 (the Bears list him as 5-8 but he isn’t), 175 pounds he is probably strictly a return specialist in the NFL. Bellamy and Tolliver are basically practice squad guys hoping to take the next step.

Position battle: The most fascinating battle to watch in camp will be Morgan and Wilson going head-to-head for the No. 3 wide receiver position. As high as the Bears folks claim to be on Wilson, and he took all the first-team reps in OTA’s and minicamp, Morgan should provide quite the competition and be given a chance to win the job.

The best battle in camp will probably be Williams, Spurlock and Edwards battling for punt return chores with Weems joining them in the kickoff returner competition. Only one of the first three will make the club with Weems having a shot at sticking as a special teams gunner even if he can’t be a returner.

Contract situations (information via Spotrac): With Marshall receiving a threeyear extension last month, the Bears have no contracts to worry about here. Jeffery will be eligible for a contract

extension for the first time following this season so another big year for him will put pressure on the Bears to belly up to the bar with some serious cash, though the franchise tag will be in play in 2016. The three guys they covet the most – Marshall, Jeffery and Wilson – are all under club control beyond this season.

Keep an eye on: Tolliver is the guy who could be intriguing if he were able to take a huge step forward from last season. At 6-5, 204, lining him up with the 6-4 Marshall, 6-3 Jeffery and 6-6 Bennett would be a matchup nightmare for any defense. But with Wilson ahead of him on the depth chart and standing 6-4 himself, it just doesn’t seem likely the Bears will have any real surprises at this position this year. Wilson is the other guy to watch as Marshall and the coaches continue to sing his praises.

Blackhawks lock down ‘cornerstones’

One last hurrah for the Blackhawks’ vaunted core?

The Hawks on Wednesday locked up their two biggest stars, signing Toews and Kane to matching eightyear extensions worth a combined $168 million that will keep them in Chicago through the end of the 202223 seasons – when Toews will be 35 and Kane will be 34. The deals were as inevitable as they were warranted – the biggest (albeit most expensive) no-brainers in team history. But each carries an NHL-record cap hit of $10.5 million a season, which means not everyone whose name is on the Stanley Cup twice will be around to see those extensions kick in come 2015-16.

Of course, there never was any suspense to this one. Not really, anyway. Sure, the negotiations dragged a bit past Stan Bowman’s stated target of July 1, but Toews and Kane were never going anywhere. As Bowman himself put it, they’ll be Hawks “forever.” Eventually, that means they’ll

be immortalized in statue form at the United Center. For now, it means that the city’s two biggest young stars will stay in Chicago through – at least – the primes of their careers.

Neither is a 50-goal scorer such as Alex Ovechkin, whose $9.538-million cap hit was blown away by the two deals. Toews has never been a pointa-game player. Kane’s not even on the Hawks’ top line. But they’re just 26 and 25 years old, respectively, each with two Stanley Cups and a Conn Smythe Trophy to his credit. And perhaps most significantly, they’re the duo that woke a dormant, moribund franchise. That sparked a 277game (and counting) sellout streak at the long-abandoned United Center.

That led the Hawks out of obscurity and down Michigan Avenue in 2010, and into Grant Park in 2013, a sea of red before them, stretching to the horizon, each time.

“Jonathan and Patrick have become cornerstones of this franchise during their time in Chicago,” Bowman said in a release. “We are excited to ensure they will continue to lead our organization for years to come.”

The signings – the largest annu-

al cap hits since the salary cap was instituted following the 2004-05 lockout – indeed ensure that the Hawks will remain competitive and relevant into the next decade. But they also ensure that the core that has won two championships (and came agonizingly close to another this past season) can’t stay together forever.

The salary cap (now at $69 million) will rise significantly in 2015-16 when the extensions kick in, thanks to the new Canadian TV deal the league inked this past season.

Toews and Kane both have said repeatedly that they wanted to stay in Chicago, and expressed their appreciation in statements released by the team.

“I could not be more grateful for the amazing moments and opportunities I’ve been given by the Chicago Blackhawks,” Toews said.

“There’s no organization in sports that cares more about the overall experience of their fans and the success of their players. To have the chance to continue with this amazing group of teammates and people throughout the organization is an incredible honor.”

In Texas, the native art really rocks

By CHRISTINE DELL’AMORE Special To The Washington Post Even to a claustrophobe, the narrow cave between two giant boulders felt strangely inviting.

When I squirmed into the dim coolness on my belly and flipped over onto my back, I could see why: This was a sacred place. Two humanoid figures with red-checkered bodies and wide bug eyes stared down at me from the low ceiling.

“I found the rain gods!” I shouted gleefully to my boyfriend and his parents, Allan and Diana, who were waiting outside the cave.

Soon we were lying on our backs admiring the ancient paintings of Tlaloc, a deity worshiped by the Jornada Mogollon, an agricultural people who lived in what’s now Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site between 200 and 1450 A.D. Suddenly, a frustrating afternoon of scouring outcroppings and ledges for rock art had taken a lucky turn, and we wondered about the identity of this prehistoric Michelangelo, as Allan called him, who’d left his mark here several centuries before.

The Jornada Mogollon were among the first cultures to master corn agriculture, allowing them to live year-round in pit houses amid this jumble of granitelike rocks and boulders in far West Texas. Hueco Tanks formed about 32 million years ago, when magma beneath the surface seeped into overlying layers of rock. Over millennia, the limestone on top eroded, revealing what the Spanish called huecos, or hollows – the bowllike remnants of trapped gas and other unknown geological processes.

These round depressions can collect water – a rare commodity in the Chihuahuan Desert – for long periods of time.

The oasis has drawn people for about 10,000 years.

But I’d come here to satisfy a different thirst: As an artist myself, I was keen to see some of the park’s thousands of rock art pieces, whose subjects include animals such as jaguars and horses, geometric shapes, dancing figures and especially abstract faces painted on the rock that archaeologists call masks, a specialty of the Jornada Mogollon. The culture left behind about 200 painted masks, the largest collection known in North America.

But appreciating the 860-acre state park’s pictographs isn’t as easy as meandering through a museum. Due to its popularity with tourists and rock climbers, “Hueco Tanks was in fact ‘loved to death’ in the ’60s through the early ’90s,” said

Much of the rock art in the state park, which opened in 1970, was damaged, and in 1998 the park instituted a new public-use plan that “dramatically improved the condition of the site and improved visitor awareness,” Olszewski said.

Today, only 70 people at a time can enter Hueco Tanks without a guide, and rock climbing is carefully regulated.

Only North Mountain, one of the park’s three peaks, is open to self-guided exploration, but the hiking trails don’t show you exactly where to find the rock art.

So, on a clear spring morning after our rain god discovery, Brian, Diana, Allan and I showed up for a rock art tour, which for only $2 each would take us to see pictographs otherwise off-limits to the general public.

Our volunteer guide, Joe Barraza, a lifelong resident of nearby El Paso, has been coming to Hueco since the 1970s.

“Even if there was not any rock art here, this is a special place,” Barraza told our group.

As we started off down the path toward North Mountain, lizards darting underfoot, Barraza stopped to point out desert plants and some of their traditional uses: The spiky Mormon tea bush soothes asthma, brittlebush burns into a sweet incense, and the fernlike mesquite trees produce tasty beans. For native peoples, “Hueco Tanks [was] like a Super Wal-Mart – anything that you need to survive can be found here,” he said.

Our first stop was Lower Site 17, or, as the Native Americans call it, Shame

Cave, because of the centuries of graffiti that have all but covered up a large painting of various figures and animals created by Mescalero Apaches, mounted warriors who hunted and raided in these parts about 500 years ago. Barely visible beneath the etched initials and dates are a long white snake – a symbol of water – and a man on horseback, probably an Apache, which represents European contact, because the Spanish introduced horses to North America.

We entered Mescalero Canyon, where the shadows of circling turkey vultures moved across high rock walls and the descending, melancholy song of the canyon wren echoed overhead. Finally veering off the main trail, we began climbing up a pile of boulders – the porous rock offered great handholds – until we reached an exposed ledge overlooking a wind-whipped valley. Catching my breath, I was excited to see four red Jornada Mogollon masks decorating an even higher ledge; one had a solid red face framed by bangs, with almond white eyes, a teardrop nose, and what looked like earrings.

No two masks are the same, and though their specific meanings are unknown, archaeologists think that they’re probably depictions of ancestral spirits, similar to what modern-day Pueblo Native Americans call kachinas – representations of animate or inanimate objects, such as lightning, buffalo or corn.

I studied the art for a long time, soaking up the spiritual vibe, thinking that I’d gladly be stuck between this rock and hard place any day.

New knowledge, medications can ease ulcerative colitis Dear Doctor K: I’ve recently been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. What causes it, and how is it treated?

Dear Reader: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory disease of the colon. (The colon is also called the large intestine.) UC can cause debilitating abdominal pain and diarrhea, and it substantially increases your risk of colon cancer.

Our large intestines contain trillions of bacteria. Normally, tissue lining the intestine prevents these bacteria from infecting the intestinal wall. But when the intestine’s lining fails, bacteria that usually are harmless can activate your immune system.

UC is an autoimmune disease.

In such diseases, the immune system – which is there to defend us against foreign invaders – instead attacks our own tissues. In the case of UC, the immune system mistakenly attacks the intestine, causing inflammation and injury.

Over time, UC wears away the lining of the rectum and colon; it leaves ulcers that may bleed or ooze mucus or pus. (I’ve put an illustration of how UC affects the colon on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

UC can cause abdominal cramping, bloody diarrhea and urgent bowel movements. You may be able to ease your symp-

Medications can often control symptoms. Most patients begin with anti-inflammatory drugs that are related to aspirin. These drugs take time to work; you may need to take them for several weeks before you are symptom-free.

If these drugs don’t work, you may be prescribed more powerful anti-inflammatory drugs: corticosteroids. Unfortunately, they can have worrisome side effects, including increased risk of infection.

In the past decade, powerful new medicines called “biologics” have been developed. They often are successful when other treatments for UC have failed, but they can also have serious side effects.

When drugs don’t work or are too difficult to tolerate, your doctor may suggest surgery to remove the colon. Surgery is also an option if your risk of colon cancer is particularly high.

Some colon-removal surgeries leave you unable to defecate out of your rectum. Rather, bow-

el movements leave the body through an opening in the abdominal wall and into a collection bag.

Newer surgical techniques allow regular bowel movements.

Finally, anyone with UC should have regular colonoscopies to check for early signs of colon cancer.

For a century we’ve known that trillions of bacteria, of many different types, live in our guts all of our lives. We’ve known that some of them actually aid our health. We’ve also known of a few instances in which bacteria that normally live in our gut without causing problems can start to cause problems if they multiply too rapidly. An example is the infectious diarrhea caused by bacteria called C. difficile.

But in the past five years we’ve discovered that our “normal” gut bacteria may influence our health in ways we never imagined. There is increasing evidence that subtle imbalances between different types of normal gut bacteria may be important causes of many diseases, including UC. That could lead to fairly simple and effective treatments in the years ahead.

Mom curious about moral code of daughter’s friends Dr. Wallace: Our daughter has made some new friends at school. Some of them have been to our house and they seem to be OK kids, but I don’t know much about them.

When I start asking our daughter about any of her friends she becomes defensive and reminds me that she knows how to choose her friends and that she doesn’t need any interference from me.

Should I trust her to choose friends who have good moral character or should I do all I can to find out for myself?

I want to be a good mom and do everything possible to see that our daughter does not associate with girls who lack moral character because I am well aware of peer pressure. – Mom, St. Charles Dear Mom: Parents should not choose friends for their teens, but should know as much as possible about the friends their teens choose to hang around with. Indeed, peer pressure is a powerful force and can cause a teen to get “involved” because the teen wants to be part of a group, even if the group has members who could have negative influences.

She is starting to make me think that she thinks there’s something wrong with me and it makes me feel uneasy.

You are in a no-trump contract and the opponents lead a suit in which you have only one top-trick stopper. (This is usually the ace, but might be the king if third hand takes the first trick with the ace.) How long do you hold up that stopper?

In this example deal, South is in three no-trump. What should he do after West leads his fourth-highest spade and East puts up the queen?

Declarer has seven top tricks: one spade, one heart, four diamonds and one club. The other two winners will come from clubs, but if that finesse loses, the defenders might take five blacksuit tricks first.

How long should declarer hold up his spade ace? To answer that question, typically he applies the Rule of Seven. He adds together the number of cards in the suit led that are in the dummy and his hand. He subtracts the total from seven and holds up for that number of rounds.

Here, six from seven is one. So South ducks the first trick, takes the second trick with his spade ace, and runs the club 10. It loses, but the contract is safe.

Note two things. First, if East has a third spade, the suit would be breaking 4-3 and declarer would lose only three spades and one club. Second, if South ducks two rounds of spades, West ought to shift to the heart king.

Then the defenders will take two spades, two hearts and one club.

Two features of the RE/MAX Northern Illinois real estate app are: • MAXview technology, which allows consumers to use the camera on their mobile device to view homes for sale in their immediate area in real time, and see full listing details and photos.

• Commute time search, which provides consumers the ability to search for properties that are most convenient to them by entering desired drive times, transit times, cycling or walk times. Each variable displays homes for sale based on the criteria entered.

For example, a user can enter a desired drive time to work for him or herself and spouse, as well as a desired walking or bicycling distance to a child’s school, and get a map of homes that are for sale meeting those criteria.
