JoJo’s bike parade brings joy on the Fourth of July KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla SUGAR GROVE – JoJo the Clown has her Clown Victoria decorated in its bright colors and flowers, and it will be ready to go for the Sugar Grove Fourth of July tradition.

Sugar Grove resident Karen McCannon has been portraying the character for more than a dozen years. And for about that long, JoJo has been leading the Sugar Grove Fourth of July Bike Parade.

It’s a day McCannon treasures. All in the village are invited to line up starting at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot at John Shields Elementary School, 85 S. Main St., Sugar Grove. They can ride bikes, motorcycles, scooters or push strollers. Sometimes, people might bring tractors or go-karts. They can walk. Karen McCannon, as JoJo, welcomes them all.

At 1 p.m., the parade begins, and participants will make a short trip through nearby village streets. There is no registration. McCannon said the Sugar Grove Park District will give away freeze pops after the parade, and the Sugar Grove American Legion Auxiliary will distribute bottles of water.

JoJo will appear in her Clown Victoria, a converted golf cart, as usual. But as McCannon, 71, has struggled through health concerns during the past few years, she said she began to wonder whether it was time for JoJo to retire. In 2012 and 2013, JoJo missed the parade, but Karen McCannon’s granddaughters, Alyssa and Sammie McCannon, kept things going.

JoJo returned last year, and

the clown plans to be at the parade again Saturday. Karen McCannon said JoJo’s appearances might be reduced, but there are no plans to retire.

“JoJo thought about retiring, but then she decided she couldn’t do that,” Karen McCannon said, adding, “I can’t give up. I can’t give up the bike parade. As long as I can climb into the Clown Victoria and drive that golf cart, we’re going to have that bike parade.”

After all, she said JoJo was created to get her through tough times. In 2002, she said, her husband died of cancer.

And in 2003, she developed breast cancer. While she was in treatment, she created JoJo. “I needed to do something that I was passionately excited about,” she said.

And Karen McCannon said she remains excited about portraying JoJo. As usual, Alyssa and Sammie McCannon, now 17 and 13 years old, respectively, will be part of the event.

Karen McCannon noted they helped inspire the concept after enjoying a similar event in Yorkville years ago. Karen McCannon said she wasn’t sure how it would go that first year.

“I was convinced it was just going to be JoJo the Clown and my grandchildren,” she said. But she was surprised 45 people showed up. She said she was excited and encouraged by that, and now it’s not uncommon for more than 200 to show up.

Sammie McCannon said there are plans to perhaps have a drumline from Kaneland Harter Middle School or Kaneland High School to attend. She said the parade has become a family tradition.

Sugar Grove Village President Sean Michels is among those who regularly participate in the event.

“It’s always a lot of fun,” Michels said. “The kids get a huge kick out of it. JoJo the Clown and her friends do a great job of entertaining the kids. It’s just ... fantastic community spirit. I really applaud JoJo for putting that on.”

Karen McCannon said she hopes the parade continues even after she’s unable to participate. She said the parade begins near the American flag at John Shields Elementary, and a color guard is there for the Pledge of Allegiance.

Where did you grow up? Billings, Montana.

Then we moved to Australia for 17 years. It was a very laid-back culture and a community-based lifestyle.

What is your job? Recycling program coordinator for the Kane County Division of Environmental Resources. I manage monthly recycling events, publish a public recycling education yearly newsletter, and I run the recycling hotline.

Chowdown event set at Elburn community center

Kirk becomes director at Fox Valley Wildlife Center

By BRYAN SALVAGE editorial@kcchronicle.com ELBURN – Laura Kirk, 29, of Oswego, was promoted to the position of director of animal care at Elburn-based Fox Valley Wildlife Center by its board of directors in midMay. Kirk replaces Ashley Kendall, who relocated to Seattle with her husband after he accepted a new job.

As a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the center relies solely on grants and donations to operate.

“We are a wildlife hospital that’s not open to the public.

We take injured, sick and orphaned wild animals with the goal of releasing them back into the wild,” Kirk said.

“We also educate students at schools, nursing home residents and man educational booths at public events.”

Kirk’s career with the wildlife center began in May 2011

as a volunteer. Next, she was hired as a seasonal animal care staffer and handler of education programs, promoted to full-time wildlife specialist, and then appointed to her current position. Current responsibilities include scheduling training and work for seasonal and full-time staff, as well as 15 summer nonpaid interns and 60 volunteers; assisting the board in fundraising; revising animal care protocols based on best practices; determining the best strategies for treating animals; and partnering with volunteer veterinarians while overseeing the animals’ medical care.

Robert Schuman, full-time wildlife specialist and assistant director of animal care, Donna Tate, the year-round education director, as well as five seasonal animal care employees also staff the center.

Batavia to host its annual 4th of July fireworks show KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Batavia will have its annual fireworks sky concert Saturday. Observation areas for the show will be at Engstrom Park at Main Street and Millview Drive and the Batavia High School athletic practice fields.

There will be food vendors and live bands, which will start at 5 p.m. and be on Millview Drive and Main Street.

The sky concert will start at 9:30 p.m. and end at 10 p.m.

Alcoholic beverages, sparklers, fireworks and dogs are prohibited from all event observation areas, according to

a news release from the city of Batavia.

After the show, motorists leaving the event area or driving on Batavia’s west side should be prepared to encounter heavy traffic delays, according to the release.

The roads that will be most impacted are Randall Road from Main Street to Fabyan Parkway, West Wilson Street and Main Street near Batavia High School and Route 31 in the downtown area, the release stated.

Motorists are advised to plan driving routes accordingly and allow plenty of time to get in and out of the event area.

Kirk’s vision is to carry on Kendall’s work of enhancing animal care quality by networking with other centers while constantly learning more about wildlife rehabilitation. Increasing center funding is her major challenge. Wildlife center officials and staff hope someday to build a new, larger facility on center-owned land; its current, older, limited-space facility is on land leased from the Forest Preserve District of Kane County.

Batavia aldermen address stormwater funding

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting discussed a funding gap between what the city is currently spending on stormwater related issues and the level of spending recommended in a recent study done for the city.

“There are several options available to the city to address the identified funding gap,” Batavia Public Works Director Gary Holm told aldermen. “One of the options is to continue funding stormwater related issues out of the general fund.

Another option is to create a separate stormwater utility enterprise fund. A third option is a combination of both.”

First Ward Alderman Michael O’Brien said he would like to find “a happy medi-

um, if at all possible.” Second Ward Alderman Alan Wolff said the gap in stormwater funding is a problem aldermen can’t ignore any longer.

“We have to make a decision on it and move forward,” Wolff said.

Second Ward Alderman Marty Callahan said perhaps the city should hold public hearings on the issue.

“It is just another piece of the puzzle,” he said.

As part of a study, Municipal and Financial Services Group has recommended increasing water and sewer rates over the next five years to fund ongoing operations and capital investments in the water and sewer systems.

As proposed, water rates would increase by 3 percent in 2016 and 2017, and by 4.5 percent in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

The study also recommended increasing sewer rates by 6 percent starting

in 2016 through 2020. In addition, it recommended the city adopt an alternative residential water rate structure that includes a summer peak surcharge rate, and increase industrial sewer user charges.

During the meeting, resident James Gorski showed aldermen pictures of recent flooding in his neighborhood on Blaine Street.

“There was about five inches of water around my house,” he said. “This should have been fixed a long time ago. What is the plan to get this fixed?”

Also voicing his frustration was Rudy Dubis, who also lives on Blaine Street.

“To get sewage coming out of your floor drains and everything else is ridiculous,” he told aldermen. “I’m getting sick of cleaning up my basement. It’s happened four times in 10 years.”

Wright, 53, of Campton Hills, was charged April 27. He was accused of sexually assaulting a child he knew over a period

The June 17 indictment lists 16 counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, a Class X felony; 11 counts of criminal

sexual assault, a Class 1 felony; and six counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a Class 2 felony.

Wright faces a sentence of six to 30 years in prison for each of the Class X felonies; four to 15 years in prison for the Class 1 felonies; and three to seven years in prison for the Class 2 felonies. He also can be fined up to $25,000 for each charge.

According to court records, Wright was appointed a public defender and is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 14 for an arraignment.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles police made four arrests and issued up to 88 citations during a one-day traffic campaign earlier this month, according to a news release.

The city’s patrol officers were out in increased numbers June 4 during Operation Safe Summer, held on the last day of public school for the 2014-15 year.

Only regularly scheduled, on-duty officers were used, thus eliminating the need for overtime pay for the campaign, the release states.

During multiple stops made along Main Street

(Route 64) in St. Charles, police made one DUI arrest, one drug-related arrest and two arrests of motorists with suspended licenses, according to the release.

There was one citation issued for an overweight violation, and a variety of citations or warnings issued for the following – 35 speed-related offenses; 22 seat belt offenses; 16 mandatory insurance violations; nine cellphone-related offenses; and five nonspeed-related moving violations. The provided results did not specify whether the preceding offenses resulted in a citation or written warning.

There also were 14 warnings issued for various

Lottery ticket worth $4M sold in St. Charles

By KATIE KULL kkull@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A winning lottery ticket for a jackpot of $4 million was sold Monday at Lundeen’s Liquor in St. Charles to an Elgin resident.

Michael Stetar, 54, went into the liquor store during a break from his job at the St. Charles post office to Michael Stetar get a snack and a $20 Golden Casino scratch-off ticket, according to an Illinois Lottery news release.

“I scratched my ticket outside and then ran back into the store and had the clerk confirm that I really did win,” Stetar said in the release.

Stetar accepted a one-time payment of $2.4 million for his winnings. Lundeen’s Liquor received one percent of the total jackpot, or $40,000.

Lundeen’s will use its money in an ongoing renovation of its DeKalb location.

“We are actually working on renovating our DeKalb store, which we were doing already, but it’s going to make

paying for it a lot easier,” said Matthew Lundeen, the owner of the store.

Stetar will use the money to buy a new truck and invest for retirement, according to the release.

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A semitrailer turning east on East State Street from south Kirk Road in Geneva overturned Tuesday as it turned a corner, injuring the driver and shutting down traffic for a couple of hours, police said.

The incident happened about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Geneva Police Cmdr. Eric Passarelli wrote in an email.

The truck was carrying powdered iced tea, and there were no hazardous materials involved, Passarelli wrote.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva for treatment, Passarelli added.

The roadway was closed for about two hours while the truck was uprighted and then towed from the scene, Passarelli wrote.

The reason for the truck overturning still is unknown, Passarelli added.

Officers from the St. Charles and Batavia police departments assisted Geneva with traffic control at the scene. Geneva fire and St. Charles paramedics also responded.

Born: Nov. 4, 1939; in Long Island, NY Died: June 29, 2015; in St. Charles, IL Edward J. Kurtz, Jr., age 75, of St. Charles, passed away at his home in the early hours of Monday, June 29, 2015. Surrounded by his loving family, Edward peacefully made the last steps of his journey “home”.

He was born on November 4, 1939, to parents Edward and Johanna Kurtz on Bay Shore, Long Island, New York. Edward grew up on Long Island and attended local schools graduating from Babylon High School. He attended Cornell University until being drafted into the Air Force in 1961. He served four years stationed in Denver, Colorado; Atwater, CA; and Guam. Following his military service, he earned an engineering degree from Hofstra University and a Master’s degree from CW Post University.

Edward is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Kurtz; his 2 children, Elizabeth “Beth” (Bryan) Jack, and Edward John (Allison) Kurtz III; 4 grandchildren, Emily and Sarah Jack, and Bryn and John Kurtz; his sister, Joanne (Thomas) Barraga; 2 nieces; and a countryside of friends.

Edward is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Johanna Kurtz.

Alan David Soderstrom, died June 29, 2015, after a long courageous battle related to a respiratory illness.

Born November 23, 1933, in Geneva, he was a life-long resident of Geneva with family roots dating back to 1887. Al attended Geneva Community High School graduating in 1951. He attended Northern Illinois University and continued his education at Aurora College, where he graduated with his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology. He married Jean Newell, on June 16, 1956.

Alan served in the United States Army from 1957 through 1958 where he and his wife were based in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He moved back to Geneva in 1958 to raise his family.

He worked as a Kane County Sheriff’s Police Officer for a short stint.

He then began a long career with State Farm Insurance Company, as a Claims Adjuster, from which he retired in 1996.

He was a member of the Illinois Police Association, a Republican Precinct Committeeman, member of the Loyal Order of Moose, member of the Turner’s Club in Aurora and a member of the Better Breather’s Club of Elgin.

Alan enjoyed hosting many family gatherings in his home throughout the years. Fond memories include Sunday morning brunches in his home and cooking for church outings, where he brought his famous baked beans and spaghetti. He also enjoyed keeping in touch with his classmates, former

neighbors, church members, and his many friends. Alan, known as “Grandpa Al”, was a wonderful Grandfather and Father. He enjoyed spending time with each of his children and grandchildren.

Surviving are his children, David (Dawn Miller) Soderstrom, Bill (Sally Vanthournout) Soderstrom, Melinda Maughan, Lisa (Bill) Thanepohn, and Brett (Ann-Marie Trotter) Soderstrom; his grandchildren, Johnathon, Josiah, Joshua, Kevin, Steven, Samuel, and Bryan (Katie Galloway) Soderstrom; Lindsay, Jacob, and Matthew Maughan; Nicholas and Benjamin Thanepohn; Great-Granddaughter Amelia Jean Soderstrom; his brothers, Ken (Bernice) Soderstrom and Rick (Bobbi) Soderstrom; his sister-in-laws Christine and June Soderstrom; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

“My goal with my writing right now is to write a heart-warming story that is fun and entertaining,” said Schmidt, who writes under her maiden name, Tamara Lyon. “I write about real characters that find themselves in ridiculous situations. I draw inspiration from real life.”

The book revolves around the character of Bristow Sparks, an interior designer in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, who has just landed the contract of a lifetime – working for Cherry Wyeland, volatile

reality star and CEO of WineA-Lot. Schmidt, 39, grew up in Sugar Grove and currently lives in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, with her family. She said while attending Kaneland High School, she was editor of the high school’s paper, the Kaneland Krier.

“I began writing my first novel when I was 15,” Schmidt said. “I discovered that writing was what I really loved. It’s one of the reasons why I was put on this planet.”

Her books have earned several awards. In 2010, her novel “Fixing Forever Broken,” earned an IPPY Award for romance. The awards are given to the best independent books published each year.

She has some advice for aspiring novelists.

Advertising tax in Ill. proposal is a bad idea Debt-plagued Illinois is desperate for new revenue.

One proposal being considered by the administration of Gov. Bruce Rauner is a new tax on services, including advertising. The initial proposed rate was 10 percent; the idea now is to trim that to 6.25 percent, the same as the state sales tax.

Our counterproposal: Don’t impose a tax on advertising at all. Period.

Our position may appear entirely self-serving. After all, as a media company, we receive advertising revenue in exchange for communicating advertisers’ messages to our print and digital readers.

That revenue, along with circulation and job printing, makes it possible to finance our journalistic work to keep the community informed.

We believe that function has tremendous value to those we serve.

American leaders from the Founding Fathers on down have had similar beliefs.

The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits Congress from “abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.” Founding Fathers believed so much in the importance of a free, unfettered press that they enshrined it in the Constitution!

And a tax on advertising would have an overall greater impact on business besides the news media.

Rauner and the Legislature have only to look at what happened when Florida imposed a tax on advertising.

The results were unsuccessful, to say the least.

After the tax was imposed, advertising purchases overall – newspapers, radio, TV, cable TV, billboards, online – decreased by 12 per-

cent, according to statistics provided by the Illinois Press Association.

Advertising revenue declined by $100 million.

Florida lost 50,000 jobs and $2.5 billion in personal income because of lost advertising revenue.

And, perhaps the most damning result: The costs incurred by the state of Florida to administer the new advertising tax exceeded tax revenue.

In other words, it cost more money to collect the tax than the tax generated!

Only the most committed big-government bureaucrat would think that was a good idea.

Florida’s leaders quickly realized their mistake.

The advertising tax was repealed six months later.

Illinois has an advertising industry that helps produce more than 900,000 jobs and $267 billion (17.3 percent) of Illinois’ economic activity.

Through advertising, economic activity is stimulated in all sectors of the economy.

Individuals advertise their garage sales and various items for sale.

Churches advertise their service times and locations.

Small businesses advertise their goods and services.

Larger businesses (such as automobile dealers, Realtors, and grocers) do the same.

A government-induced slowdown in advertising, which the proposed tax would almost certainly cause, would ripple through the state’s economy to the detriment of all.

No other state has a tax on advertising.

Illinois should learn from Florida’s experience.

Don’t impose an advertising tax.

Yes, rocket blew up, but a useful failure BLOOMBERG NEWS It was, in corporate parlance, a “non-nominal launch.” Others more bluntly called it a “catastrophic failure.” SpaceX’s seventh mission to rendezvous with the International Space Station ended in flames above Cape Canaveral on Sunday, a couple of minutes after liftoff.

The company’s Falcon 9 rocket launched normally, soared toward the cosmos, then blasted into expensive little pieces over the Atlantic, taking with it a few thousand pounds of supplies and equipment.

The failure – the third for a resupply mission in less than a year – is a blow to the space station’s scientific mission. It’s yet another challenge to NASA’s plans to let private companies handle such launches as it trains its sights deeper into space.

And it’s a setback to SpaceX’s

ambitious plans to deploy reusable rockets.

The good news is SpaceX still has a few years to perfect those rockets before they’re scheduled to carry people into the cosmos. The space station still has months worth of supplies to sustain its crew. And NASA’s plan to let private companies handle more responsibilities in space remains sound as a matter of public policy.

The recent failures should be recognized as the cost of making progress in spaceflight. New rocket systems fail as often as they succeed.

And the string of recent (and unrelated) accidents in supplying the space station – Orbital Sciences lost a rocket in October, and a Russian mission failed in April – convey important lessons of their own as the space program ramps up for more ambitious exploration. As Scott Kelly, an astronaut aboard the

station, put it on Twitter after Sunday’s accident: “Space is hard.”

That this was the first failure in 19 launches for the Falcon 9 speaks to how much Elon Musk’s SpaceX has already accomplished. Since the company started in 2002, it has delivered a propulsive jolt to the aerospace industry by striving to do things faster, cheaper and more inventively. It has spurred competitors to slash costs, broken a monopoly on national-security launches and even roused some sluggish peers to try building reusable rockets of their own. As Bloomberg writer Ashlee Vance said in his new biography of Musk, “SpaceX has become the free radical trying to upend everything about this industry.”

Upending things can work wonders in the marketplace.

In space, it can all too easily lead to tragedy. SpaceX is learning that lesson.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Just in time for this weekend’s Grateful Dead farewell concerts at Soldier Field, two Tri-Cities men are bidding adieu to a whirlwind construction job at the Bears’ home.

Project manager/estimator Jeff Suhi of Batavia and executive Tom Rougas of Geneva work for Hillside-based MTH Industries, which constructed the support steel holding the two new video boards – one at each end zone – at Soldier Field.

Suhi called the work “99 percent done” as the venue prepares to host the iconic rock band for shows Friday, Saturday and Sunday. That deadline loomed throughout the project, with Suhi estimating the crew completed what normally would be a sixmonth job in about four.

“Everything was just accelerated really fast,” Suhi said.

“It was just a miracle, I guess, we got it done in the time period we got it done.”

In the offseason, the Chicago Park District board approved financing for replacing Soldier Field’s two existing video screens, used since the

The new screens measure 40 feet high and 129 feet wide.

Their predecessors were 23 feet by 82 feet.

MTH built the support steel as a grid system, first erecting vertical trusses of 8,000 to 10,000 pounds apiece. Using cranes to hoist the tresses in place, the crew then inserted horizontal platforms – complete with a walkway and railing – it also had constructed.

“We do a lot of work. It’s fun to do high-profile jobs and to do them well,” Rougas said. “And especially Jeff.

He’s a behind-the-scenes guy a lot of times, but he did such a good job in pulling it all together.”

STC East and North looking for next season’s leaders

T

here’s no doubt the departure of Kane County Chronicle Girls Basketball Player of the Year Katie Claussner and state 3-point finalist Kyra Washington will leave a hole to fill for St. Charles East this coming season.

Losing such important pieces to graduation is never easy for a team to recover from, but if the summer is any indication, the Saints are on the right track.

After relying on Claussner and Washington, both who will go on to play in college, to do most of the heavy lifting on the offensive end of the floor last year, East coach Lori Drumtra sees a different identity of this team.

“I think we will have a much more balanced attack this season,” Drumtra said.

“When you have prolific scorers like that, I call it the ‘Michael Jordan syndrome’ – just getting by with one of them having a big night. But we have a lot of players who have contributed this summer and we will have a lot more involvement from different people.

“A lot of the girls have relished the opportunity ahead of them and we are excited for what lies ahead for this group.”

After recently finishing up their first summer at the Purdue University team camp, not only did Drumtra get a look at the Saints playing strong competition, but also saw incoming sophomore forward Sara Rosenfeldt named to the All-Star team at the camp.

Rosenfeldt, a 6-foot forward, will take on a bigger role to do more than what was asked of her last season, bringing experience and more than just size to her position.

“I don’t think Sara knows how to not play hard,” Drumtra said. “She has this great energy about her and is a

first taking down rival St. Charles North in the regional championship.

Like East, the North Stars lost a couple big pieces in Nichole Davidson, one of two 1,000-point scorers in program history, and Ashling Davern.

A 10-point, season-ending loss to East on its home floor left a bit of a sting, something the returning North players have not forgotten about, finishing the season with a 19-9 record.

Coach Sean Masoncup, who also is North’s boys tennis coach, says seniors Morgan Rosencrants, Kyla Helsel and Claire Jakaitis have brought great leadership to the team this summer.

“This summer has been a fun struggle,” Masoncup said.

“Those three have shown great leadership and have brought the team together, and things have gone pretty well.”

But more than the leadership, Masoncup said that for most of the summer – an offseason that has seen the girls go 15-1 at the DundeeCrown summer league – he has done very little coaching and let the girls learn from their mistakes and what roles they will fill.

Rosencrants thought the team adjusted well to having to coach themselves at times at their recent team camp at the University of Notre Dame.

Lewis’ Carlsen named new NIU coach

When Northern Illinois athletic director Sean Frazier announced Lisa Carlsen as the new women’s basketball coach Tuesday, the Huskies were familiar with the work of the former Lewis University coach.

In an exhibition game before the start of the 2014-15 regular season, Lewis (Division II) upset the Huskies, 60-49, at the NIU Convocation Center.

“It didn’t hurt, I can tell you that,” Frazier said jokingly of Carlsen’s victory over the Huskies. “She was auditioning, and she didn’t know she was auditioning. I didn’t know who Lewis was – but I did after that game.”

Under Carlsen, the Flyers went 31-3 and advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, and she was named the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Division II National Coach of the Year.

Bennett had a record of 57-93 in five seasons at NIU and was 12-17 in 2014-15.

The Huskies lost leading scorer Amanda Corral (16.2 points a game) to graduation, but Carlsen takes over a team that brings back plenty from a season ago – including Renee Sladek (7.1 ppg, 5.3 rebounds

per game) and sophomore Kelly Smith (9.0 ppg) in the post, junior guard Ally Lehman (9.2 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 4.0 assists per game), to go along with both Natecia Augusta (10.4 ppg in 2013-14) and Jazmine Harris (6.0 ppg in 2013-14) coming back from injuries that kept them out of action last season.

“I want them to feel like they can be a part of something we’re doing right now,” Carlsen said. “I’m not looking at this as three or four years down the road, once I have all my own players in – that’s not going to be my approach.”

After bringing Lewis to NIU and coming away with a victory, Carlsen said the unorthodox floor design definitely took some time to get used to.

“When we came in to play last fall, I was like, ‘Whoa,’ ” she laughed. “When you jump on and play, you don’t think about it, but when you go back and watch film, then it’s really different.”

While the new Huskies head coach had success in recent years, she also had plenty of experience racking up victories as a player.

From 1992-95, she was a member of the Nebraska Express – a team in the Women’s Basketball Association, a professional league that predates the WNBA. The Express won the league championship in 1994 and she was named to the league’s all-star team in 1995.

“That was so long ago,” Carlsen laughed. “I’m not going to go out and play one-onone with these guys and expect to be successful. Do as I say, not as I do. I’ve hung my shoes up.”

Mom’s health during pregnancy can affect her child Dear Doctor K: My husband and I are planning on having our first baby. I’ve been told that what I eat, and how much stress I have while I’m carrying the baby, could affect the baby’s health decades later. That seems hard to believe. Is there any truth to it?

Dear Reader: It makes sense that a child’s nutrition and exercise during childhood might affect the child’s health as an adult. But it’s harder to imagine that your behavior and your health while you are pregnant could affect your child’s health for decades to come.

But over the past 35 years, many studies have found that a mother’s diet and stress levels can shape her child’s health in middle age. The first discovery of this type was that children with low-normal birth weight were much more likely to die of heart disease when they became adults. They also were more likely to get Type 2 diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure. This seems counterintuitive: These diseases are normally associated with higher-than-normal weight.

But a mother’s poor nutrition during the pregnancy can cause low birth weight.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff And it may lead to changes in the baby’s development in the womb. For example, in mothers with poor nutrition during a pregnancy, even if the baby has a normal birth weight, the baby’s heart, kidneys and pancreas have fewer cells than those of most babies. Decades later, when those organs start to feel the stress of having worked hard for a long time, they may get sick easier.

Some experts believe that a mother’s nutritional status even in the years before she becomes pregnant may affect the future health of her child.

That’s because a woman’s eggs are formed many years before the ovary releases an egg to be fertilized.

How could a mother’s nutrition, exercise and stress during her pregnancy leave a “mark” on her baby that causes an effect only decades later, when her child is an adult? It’s not that these mother’s experiences cause harmful changes in some of her baby’s genes.

Instead, these experiences can affect the tendency of the baby’s genes to be properly turned on and off. The effect on the child’s health takes decades to become obvious.

My Harvard Medical School colleague Dr. Matthew Gillman says a mother’s behavior during pregnancy, and in the months after the baby is born, can affect whether the child will be obese as an adult. A child is much more likely to become obese as an adult if the child’s mother smokes or gains excessive weight during pregnancy; breast feeds for fewer than 12 weeks; or if the child sleeps less than 12 hours per day during infancy. The chance of a child being obese as an adult is seven times greater if all of these conditions are true, compared with if none of them are true.

So, hard as it may be to believe, your activities before and during the pregnancy, and in the months following birth, can affect your child’s health decades later.

How to identify drug use Dr. Wallace: Our daughter is a model child. It’s quite different for our son. He doesn’t try in school, so his grades are poor and so is his citizenship.

I met with his counselor the last week of school and he told me our son is capable of getting good grades, but that he simply doesn’t put forth the effort. He also said that lately he has been hanging around with a group suspected of being involved with drugs.

• Does your teen’s value system appear to be deteriorating?

• Have you ever considered counseling for your teen?

• Is your teen becoming a stranger to you?

Your son might be drug-free even though his friends use drugs, but you certainly have far more cause for concern than you would if he hung around with kids whose interests didn’t include illicit substances. It’s very wise to monitor who your son is hanging around with.

In another context, a Monday morning quarterback is a tipster in reverse – and, like a historian, will be more accurate. There is a reverse procedure in bridge that is difficult to spot. Can you see it in this deal?

South is in seven spades.

After West leads the heart queen, what should declarer do? North’s response was the Jacoby Forcing Raise, guaranteeing at least four trumps and game-going values.

South employed Blackwood and jumped to seven spades when he knew that they had all of the aces and kings. This was a tad aggressive because there could have been a late diamond loser.

At first, South would have his eye on these 13 tricks: five spades, two hearts, three diamonds, two clubs and one diamond ruff on the board. But after he wins the first trick with the heart ace (top of touching honors from the closed hand) and cashes the spade king, West’s discard makes that line much too dangerous – and it fails here. Instead, declarer should cash his club king and play a club to dummy’s ace. When East follows suit, South is home. He ruffs a club in his hand, plays a trump to the dummy, ruffs the last club, overtakes his final spade with the ace on the board, and draws East’s remaining trump, discarding one of his low diamonds.

Declarer takes four spades, two hearts, three diamonds, two clubs and the two club ruffs in his hand.

It is a textbook dummy reversal.
