Fast-moving storm hits Kane County

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com A fast-moving storm dumped heavy rain in the area in a short period of time, but did not seem to cause any major damage as of at least 9 p.m. Monday.

“It could have been a lot worse,” said Don Bryant, director of the Kane County Office of Emergency Management. “The storms kind of dissipated as they approached our area.”

A funnel cloud was reported south of Route 30 in Aurora, which set off sirens in the North Aurora, Aurora and Sugar Grove area. But the funnel cloud did not touch down and was not confirmed as being a tornado, Bryant said.

Bryant said he heard reports of heavy rain falling in western Kane County.

“I haven’t heard any reports of any type of flooding or any reports of significant damage,” Bryant said.

His office in Geneva was running on a backup generator for about an hour after the power went out, he said.

Lt. Pat Gengler, spokesman for the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, said damage was limited to a few trees down near Sugar Grove and a traffic light that went out.

Northern Illinois University meteorologist Gilbert Sebsenste said area residents were lucky Monday to have missed the severe storm that

rolled through Iowa.

“We got off very fortunate today,” Sebenste said.

“It looked like it could have been bad, but the storms over Iowa were so violent they blew themselves out.”

Sebenste said that the cold air from the strong winds of the storm blew ahead of the storm itself, tempering the storm as it moved into Illinois.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Kane County until 3 a.m. Tuesday.

Judge Brown will leave the bench after 23 years

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – After 23 years as a judge in Kane County, F. Keith Brown is ready to step down from the bench.

“It’s time for some new challenges,” the 57-year-old said.

Although Brown’s retirement from his circuit judge post with the 16th Judicial Circuit is effective Saturday, he expects his last official duties as judge will be completed today.

By Monday morning, he had two meetings and one decision left – as well as the task of cleaning out his office in Courtroom 340 in the Kane County Courthouse.

The downtown Geneva courtroom – which he first toured as a sixth-grader – was the site of such milestones as his swearing-in ceremony and his first jury trial as a judge – a case involving a Class X felony, Brown said.

Like the other judges of Courtroom 340 before him, Brown has left his mark on the bench: His name is etched in the drawer for the two blocks of time he served in the courtroom.

“I always thought that was kind of cool,” he said.

Brown’s judicial career started in July 1991 with an appointment to associate judge, which he served as the presiding judge of the traffic and family divisions. He also presided over such matters as DUI, mental health, small claims, juveniles, paternity, domestic violence and child support matters.

He was elected as a circuit judge in 1996.

Brown said he likely will be remembered most as chief judge, a title he held from 2008 to 2012. His accomplishments during that time include establishing the Kane County Branch Court in St. Charles,

Brown is leaving with plans to stay involved with the county’s Judicial/Public Safety Strategic Planning and Technology Commission – which he chairs – and, he said, the regret of leaving Kane County without an African-American judge.

Brown, an African-American, said that when he was a practicing lawyer, he represented a client who didn’t feel he was getting a trial before his peers. The jury members, prosecutors, bailiffs and all but one security member were white, he said.

“Minorities were appearing in court but had no other role,” Brown said.

Brown was the first African-American judge in the 16th Judicial Circuit, he said.

He said he aimed to bring greater diversity to the bench, which includes women and Hispanics.

Brown’s final days as judge have included a retirement reception, as well as drop-ins by fellow judges.

“It’s been an emotional week for me,” he said.

But, he said, he has accomplished about everything he wanted to accomplish as a judge, has maxed out his pension and doesn’t want to be defined just as a judge.

He is looking forward to doing mediation and arbitration work for Chicago-based ADR Systems; traveling; pursuing philanthropic work; and spending time with his two grandchildren, he said.

Brown’s retirement could lead to one fewer judge in the 16th Judicial Circuit because of a provision in the law that limited the 16th Circuit to Kane County and moved Kendall and DeKalb to the 23rd Judicial Circuit, Kane County Court Administrator Doug Naughton said. He said the law states that the first resident circuit judge in Kane County to retire would result in the transfer of that position to the 23rd Judicial Circuit.

Chief Judge Judith Brawka intends to ask the Illinois Supreme Court to authorize a new associate judge, Naughton said.

“These 85- and 90-degree days, this is prime mosquito weather for activity,” said Laura McGowan, spokeswoman for Clarke, a company that provides mosquito abatement services for communities in the area. “Mosquitoes can lay eggs every five to seven days, and they can lay 200 to 300 eggs at a time. When you’ve got more activity with mosquitoes, you’ve got more mosquito bites and just more population.”

The cooler-than-usual spring had delayed their activity, she said.

“Mosquitoes are not as active in cooler weather, so they’re not out there feeding and multiplying and laying their eggs as much,” McGowan said.

And if the unusually cold winter killed off any mosquito eggs, the company is not seeing it. McGowan said the winter “was definitely particularly harsh.”

“However, mosquitoes, especially those floodwater mosquitoes – those are the ones laid over time – they are very well-protected,” she said. “And they are dormant until they get into water from floodwaters.

So, we didn’t see a huge dropoff of what we would expect necessarily. But it is hard to say what the population was out there.”

To get a handle on the situation, Clarke is doing surveillance work along with larviciding, which interrupts the development of larvae or pupa into adult mosquitoes. Clark also will spray or fog for mosquitoes as part of its adult control measures.

The West Nile virus was found in a crow earlier this month collected in Campton Township. This is the first ev-

idence of West Nile virus activity in Kane County this year.

West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird.

The Fox Valley Park District has been reminding people to take appropriate precautions if they are participating in outdoor park district activities, such as wearing insect repellent and dressing properly.

“You want people to be outdoors, but that’s one of the hazards of being outdoors this time of year,” said Jeff Long, public relations manager for the Fox Valley Park District. “No one

likes to be bitten, but because of the West Nile virus, there is kind of heightened awareness.”

Illinois Department of Public Health officials said it’s too early to tell whether Illinois will have an abundance of West Nile virus cases this summer.

“Trying to predict what the rest of the season is going to look like is similar to predicting the weather,” department spokesperson Melaney Arnold said. “If it’s hot and dry, then yes, we would normally see amplification of West Nile virus in mosquitoes. But if it’s rainy, that water gets flushed every so often, and the mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus like to breed in stagnant water.”

The same would be true if the weather is cool and wet. She said, “in cool weather, the disease does not amplify as much in mosquitoes or as quickly.”

During 2012’s hot and dry summer, Illinois saw 290 human cases of West Nile virus and 12 deaths related to the disease.

“That was our second-biggest year since we first started

seeing West Nile virus in Illinois,” Arnold said.

Last year saw 117 human cases of West Nile virus and 11 human deaths. Arnold noted that many factors go into a person succumbing to West Nile virus. Arnold said it “depends on who is bitten, and if they have an underlying health condition.”

“The elderly are a little more susceptible to complications and severe cases,” Arnold said. “So often times, it does depend on who contracts it.”

But she urged that people take precautions, regardless if the weather is hot and dry or cold and wet.

“We certainly don’t want people to become complacent with it,” Arnold said.

Other precautions include avoiding being outside when mosquitoes are most active between dusk and dawn, and to eliminate standing water around their house. Arnold said “that’s where the mosquitoes are going to breed.”

“If you’ve got for an example, an empty flower pot that’s collecting water and it sits there for a week or so, then that’s where the mosquitoes are going to breed,” she said.

Police warn of scams

CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department is warning people against scams after two residents lost thousands of dollars reacting to calls claiming they owed money to the Internal Revenue Service and were at risk of losing their homes, police said Monday in a news release.

“Residents should not allow themselves to be bullied by these offenders and should hang up on them immediately,” police said.

A resident was reportedly contacted Thursday by a man who identified himself as “Mr. Cruz” and told the resident he owed $5,000, which needed to be paid in the next 45 minutes or he would face arrest and be evicted from his home immediately.

The resident followed directions to go to a pharmacy and load the amount owed on Green Dot MoneyPaks, police said. The man reportedly halted contact with the caller after he was told the cards didn’t work and was told to buy more in the amount of $2,500.

Police said another resident was contacted Friday in a similar fashion and was told she owed the IRS nearly $6,000. She reportedly followed directions to purchase 10 Reloadit Cards with $500 loaded on each card and was told to buy more cards after

that transaction.

MoneyPak and Reloadit cards are a way to transfer money and are available at more than 50,000 retailers nationwide, police said.

Both victims lost about $5,000, police spokeswoman Lisa Blackwell said.

Both phone calls came from the 202 area code, which covers Washington, D.C., police said. In one case, police said, the scammer “spoofed” the IRS phone number in Washington, D.C., and the St. Charles Police Department’s main number to appear legitimate, and the caller identified herself as a St. Charles police officer.

Police said this scam isn’t new, but incidents seem to have spiked in the past year.

“Those who make the calls are reported to be extremely rude, threatening and demanding,” police said. “Residents should know that the IRS, or any other government entity, does not operate in this manner.”

Whenever in doubt, Blackwell said, ask questions.

“It may be scary, but they have to remember they’re on the phone, and they can simply hang up and call 911 to get assistance,” Blackwell said.

Those who have been a victim of this scam should contact the St. Charles Police Department to make a report, Blackwell said. She noted the IRS tracks the reports and is working the fraud cases.

GENEVA – Drew Freedlund, an 8-year-old Batavia resident, emerged as the winner Saturday in the Geneva All American Soap Box Derby event in downtown Geneva. Stan Iglehart, the race’s organizer, said Freedlund emerged from a field of 14 racers to prevail.

The victory includes a trip to Akron, Ohio, for the world championship on July 26.

Freedlund will compete there against more than 450 others in the event. Saturday’s event was in the local stock division.

This is the second year that the soap box race has taken place in Geneva. Last year, Freedlund competed and finished fourth and also won the sportsmanship award, according to a news release.

Up-cycling brings new life to older furniture

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Bernadette Kemper started a homebased business, Avenue 122, where she up-cycles furniture.

That is, she takes a piece of furniture that is worn out or needs a facelift and paints it. Kemper also teaches classes so that furniture owners can do the work themselves.

“You want to keep it,

so you paint it, refinish it, up-cycle it [into] a real show-stopper,” Kemper said.

Kemper, 54, of Geneva, said she has been up-cycling furniture for a few years, and her work is selling in four consignment shops, including Scentimental Gardens Too, 116 Cedar Ave., St. Charles; and at What’s Your Consignment, 12 E. State St., Geneva.

“I have always been a crafter, quilter, knitter and full-time mom for a while,”

Kemper said. “I’m always trying to find an outlet for my creative side. I took a couple classes two years ago, and once I started doing it, I never looked back.”

She has a studio in her house and teaches classes in a cleared out space at the Geneva consignment shop, Kemper said.

She is survived by her beloved husband, John of Batavia; her son, John (Kim Dumke) Andreas of Tempe, Arizona; her daughter, Amy (Curt Crosby) Andreas of Geneva; her granddaughter, Anna Crosby; and her four sisters, Kay Benson of Rockford, Nancy (Bill) Havener of Sterling, Jane Stanley of New York and Lois (Vince Dina) Stanley of Kenilworth.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – An actor portraying Benjamin Franklin on Sunday had a warning for those who want to experiment with electricity.

“Do not try this at home on your own,” he told a crowd of about 130 people at the Batavia Public Library. “Some people have and got electrocuted.”

Chicago actor RJ Lindsey brought Franklin to life in the program “The Amazing Dr. Franklin,” part of the library’s Sundays on Stage series. Franklin’s famous kite experiment, in which he attached a key to a kite during a thunderstorm in 1752, proved that lightning was electrical in nature.

He also is known for numerous inventions, including bifocals.

“You are very welcome for the bifocals,” Lindsey said.

“I was tired of taking off and putting on glasses.”

Ben Franklin, American revolution author, inventor and ambassador, chronicled his exploits Sunday at the Batavia Public Library. Chicago actor RJ Lindsey, in period costume, portrayed Franklin in “The Amazing Dr. Franklin” in the library’s Sundays on Stage series.

Along with presenting the program in character, Lindsey also answered questions from the audience as if he was Franklin. Brent Beacham of Batavia asked Franklin if he was a deist.

“Yes, a deist,” Lindsey

said. “Deists believe there was a God that started everything, and then he took a vacation. He is not going to answer your prayers.”

Beacham said he stumbled upon the program after bringing a couple of friends to see

the library.

“I really enjoyed it,” Beacham said. “He brought life to the character. He was very entertaining.”

Franklin is one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and Americans on

the Fourth of July will celebrate the adoption of that document. Franklin later signed the U.S. Constitution in 1787.

The lineup will take place at 12:30 p.m. Friday with the parade stepping off at 1 p.m. from John Shields Elementary School, 85 S. Main St., Sugar Grove.

Jojo will be riding in her “Clown Victoria” with Sugar Grove fire and police vehicles and farmers as they travel down Main Street.

ST. CHARLES – The kids navigating S.S. Pillbug – a cardboard boat specifically designed to cross Swanson Pool in St. Charles – were optimistic Saturday as they prepared to compete against other kids in the Sink or Swim Cardboard Boat Race.

They wanted to know how many laps they needed to complete.

“They said they are going to paddle to the end and chant to the end,” said Marsha Buvary, whose children Albert, 10, and Anna, 7, navigated the boat with Brady and Brett Barnes, 9 and 11, respectively.

But their handmade boat – along with most others – didn’t make it across the width of Swanson Pool without the kids somehow in the water.

Melissa Weaver, aquatic supervisor with the St. Charles Park District, noted that two boats made it across.

“I would call that a success,” she said of the new park district activity.

Another Sink or Swim Cardboard Boat Race is set for July 12 at Otter Cove Aquatic Park.

Participants are limited to two construction materials – cardboard and duct tape. Boats cannot exceed 10 feet in length and must be capable of holding at least one person but no more than four.

Saturday, 8-year-old Hollister Schneider – who earned the nickname Dracula for his vampire costume – worked on his coffin-shaped boat for several weeks with his father, Mark Schneider.

His father said such elements as displacement, center of gravity and symmetry factored into the construction.

“There’s some science involved,” he said.

Although he capsized soon into the race, the St. Charles boy was rewarded for his efforts.

He earned the Vogue Award, which recognized the team with the most spectacular or attractive boat.

“This will make a great memory,” his grandmother Sandy Schneider said.

Allowing exports of crude oil would boost economy The WASHINGTON POST Quietly but wisely, the Commerce Department has decided to allow the first exports of U.S. crude oil since Congress imposed a ban on such sales (except to Canada) in the 1970s.

To be sure, the agency’s ruling amounts to redefining crude in a way that applies only to a form of ultralight oil that U.S. refineries are ill-equipped to process.

The executive branch couldn’t do much more than that to expand crude exports without congressional permission. Still, Commerce’s move is a step in the right direction because resuming oil sales abroad could help the U.S. economy reap the full fruits of the shale revolution that has propelled this country back into the top ranks of global oil and gas production.

The origins of the ban lie in the long-gone political and economic issues of the Nixon era. Specifically, the United States banned oil exports in response to the declining domestic production and Middle East supply shocks of that time, which, together with the then-existing system of U.S. price controls, made it seem rational to keep U.S.-produced oil at home rather than let it flow to the highest bidder on the world market. The world has changed dramatically since then; with U.S. production booming, this country is in a position to move the world market. Yet some still defend the export ban on the grounds that it holds down the price of crude to U.S. refineries and, by extension, the price of gasoline at U.S. pumps.

A new report by IHS Global explains why that thinking is outmoded. Actually, the report notes, allowing U.S. producers to sell their light crude abroad, where more refineries are equipped to process it efficiently, would incentivize additional U.S. production and job creation.

At the same time, increasing the world supply of crude oil would translate into lower world prices for other heavier grades of crude, which U.S. refineries do use, and for gasoline.

That, in turn, would be reflected in moderate gas prices in the United States. The IHS study estimates free trade in U.S. crude oil could save U.S. motorists $265 billion between 2016 and 2030. This does not count the geopolitical benefits of bringing a stable new source of supply onto world markets to offset those from Iraq, Libya and other trouble spots.

Fossil fuel consumption contributes to carbon emissions and climate change, so free trade in oil should be complemented by other policies to encourage lower consumption, such as a carbon tax. Even with the best such policies in place, though, a carbon-free energy future is years away – and in the interim U.S. consumers and industry will rely on oil and gas.

U.S. policy should be to ensure that the world market for those commodities functions as flexibly and transparently as possible.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR CIVIL RIGHTS ACT AN AMERICAN LANDMARK To the Editor: As we prepare to gather with friends and family to celebrate the Fourth of July, I want to encourage everyone to take a moment to commemorate another important event in our nation’s history.

Fifty years ago on July 2, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlawed discrimination based on race, gender or national origin, became law. The landmark civil rights law prohibited racial segregation in schools, workplaces and public facilities, and ended unfair voting registration practices.

Having been a student at Alabama State College – now Alabama State University – in Montgomery, Alabama, in the

early 1950s, I experienced some of the inequalities that prompted the civil rights movement.

Coming from Chicago to Montgomery brought challenges and frustrations due to the racial climate in the south. African-Americans were prohibited from drinking at certain water fountains and using certain washrooms; weren’t allowed to choose which seat on a bus to sit on; and were banned from eating at many restaurants. African-American students faced the inequality of a segregated school system.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 ushered in widespread legal changes for which activists had fought for years. It was a monumental step in the direction of racial equality and fairness.

I encourage those who would

like to learn more about this important milestone in our nation’s history to read the feature article on the Civil Rights Movement in the 2013-14 Illinois Blue Book, published by my office. St. Charles North’s Blowers earns multiple top 3 spots, friendships

ST. CHARLES – A firsttime trip to the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games is just the tip of the iceberg for St. Charles North’s Janna Blowers.

Having been born with Moebius syndrome, a disability that causes partial facial paralysis and hinders muscle movement, Blowers, 19, was one of four athletes representing the state of Illinois for gymnastics at the Games from June 14 to 21, and came home with much more than the three medals she earned.

Blowers, who competed in five events, earned silver medals in the balance beam and floor exercise events, and a bronze on uneven bars. Former Russian Olympic gymnast Svetlana Boginskaya presented each Special Olympian their medals.

Yet, it is the friendships and experiences that will stick with her for a lifetime.

Upon the athletes’ arrival, they were loaded onto coach buses, and police-escorted down the New Jersey Turnpike; the opening ceremony was held at the Prudential Center in Newark. With appearances from celebrities such as “Glee” star Jane Lynch and NBA player Michael Carter-Williams and a dinner and cruise through the New York Harbor, there wasn’t a shortage of excitement for the athletes, yet for Blowers, it was being with her team and coaches, and encouraging each other, that she enjoyed most.

“It seems that even with all the benefits of athletics, it is the relationships that matter. Athletic participation as a means to establishing those relationships,” her mother, Betsy Blowers, wrote in an email.

In addition, throughout the Games an abundance of support came from an estimated 10,000 volunteers. Thousands of supporters flooded the events, and always referred to the competitors as “Champions”-coinciding with the Games’ overall theme of “Revealing Champions.”

“Everything was really well organized. It gave the athletes every opportunity to succeed,” said Jennifer Hitt, Blowers’ floor coach at the Games.

Blowers began her involvement in gymnastics at the age of 5 as a supplement to her physical therapy, and

Blowers first started planning to compete in the USA Games this past November.

Through a process that included an application and letters of reference, she was accepted. From there, she attended a “processing day” in which she was measured for uniforms and met her teammates: Karlee Darow, Sabrina Walega and Danielle Mongeon and the coaches. In April, the team met for a three-day camp, which gave the athletes another chance to train and meet each other.

With the help of Hitt, Blowers was able to break out of her usual quiet shell and shine. Hitt recalled when she first met Blowers at their three-day camp, she was ex-

tremely quiet, but by the time the Games rolled around, she blossomed.

“She was talking to her teammates, and during an event, one of them made a mistake, but Janna was right there to comfort and put her arm around them,” Hitt said.

“She’s tiny, but mighty,” Hitt added.

Besides gymnastics, Blowers continues to remain active in the St. Charles North community, serving as the girl’s varsity basketball student manager and participating in the club “Team Polaris,” an after-school club for students with disabilities and their North classmates.

“She’s an amazing young lady. … I’m sure I’ll be seeing her at state [in the future],” Hitt said.

Those big things came quickly as the 2013 Geneva graduate’s team advanced to the championship game of the Division II Softball World Series in Salem, Virginia, this spring.

“I knew they had been real successful in the past and had won the conference for a while,” Gordon said. “I was hoping to go there and help them continue that streak and then we did that, and made it all the way to the national championship.”

Gordon saw action in 20 of the team’s 63 games, hitting .238 with eight RBIs while also catching for a team that produced a 2.95 ERA. “In college, the game is a lot faster than high school, and you have to know what you’re going to do in every situation,” she said. “You have to be on your toes at all times, and the pitching is a lot better.”

Valdosta State won the Gulf South Conference for the sixth straight year and qualified for its fourth World Series in five years, having won it all in 2012.

The team was swept in a three-game series by Alabama-Hunstville during the regular season, but went 4-1 against them during the conference tournament and the NCAA South Super Regional.

“We had a really good season and I was proud with how I played,” Gordon said. “It was really exciting, especially after we lost three straight to Alabama-Hunstville. We went out to prove everyone wrong, and then made it all the way to the title.”

Belgium took care of business in Group H, winning all three matches, and now face an upset-minded United States for a place in the quarterfinals of the World Cup.

pates playing an even bigger role.

“We’re losing five seniors, including our top pitcher and our shortstop and third baseman,” she said. “They obviously had a huge impact on the team, but we’re excited about who we have coming back, as well as the new freshmen class.”

A small percentage of high school athletes are talented enough to play in college.

Even fewer get to play on the ultimate stage – for a national title – and Gordon still has three more years to play.

“Every athlete dreams of playing the sport they love in college and on a team that all works so hard,” Gordon said.

“I was a little homesick and stressful when I first got to school, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I had a great experience with my teammates.”

“There’s a lot of bunkers here,” Nelson said. “They’re definitely tough and it causes a lot of difficulty on the course.”

While players dealt with the course’s challenges, no one could catch Mueller and his sizzling play on the front nine.

“You have to have great shots consistently,” Zimmer said of Mueller’s play. “That’s really impressive.”

On the girls side of play, 15-year-old Rainstar Roque from West Chicago was equally impressive with a 1-over 73.

Roque had three bogeys and two birdies on the day.

In the junior boys tournament, Tyler Barton from Elburn finished in a tie for eighth place with an 84. His score was 11 shots behind the tournament’s winner, Austin Freeman, who shot a 1-over 73 on the day.

Watching the young golfers play the course reminded Jeff of his own kids, now ages 7 and 9, who are already involved in golf. The two already talk about the opportunity to try and win their grandfather’s tournament when they get old enough.

“They never got to meet their grandpa,” Jeff said. “In some ways, this is their experience with their grandpa.”

NAPERVILLE – More than 100 golfers assembled at Cress Creek Country Club for its annual Illinois Junior Golf Association tournament Monday, but there was one golfer missing.

John Jarvis was a perennial golf champion at Cress Creek. He was on the board of directors at the IJGA, as well as a member at the country club. He grew up around the game and eventually passed down his knowledge to his son, Jeff. John’s life would come to an abrupt end, however, when cancer took his life at age 51.

For the 19 years since, his family and Cress Creek combined with the IJGA to put on the Jarvis Memorial Open.

“The year after he died, people here just pulled together and said, ‘Let’s do something good for junior golf and the next generation of golfers,’ ” John’s wife, Barbara, said.

The event has the green fees paid for in advance, so players only have to front the cost of registering with the IJGA. “After he passed away, there was still a lot of energy to keep his legacy around,” Jeff Jarvis, John’s son, added.

“It’s neat for them to play at a private club that is maintained so well. It’s a special day.”

Scott Mueller of New Lenox ran away with the senior boys tournament at 2-over par, thanks to an incredible front nine that produced three birdies and no bogeys. After opening on the back nine, Mueller went into the turn with a run of bogey, double bogey and bogey on holes 16 to 18 before going bogey-free on the next nine holes.

Young St. Charles quintet Baltimore-bound

The quintet is bound for Baltimore as a partial result.

Those five players, all incoming freshmen – Drummond and Segobiano at St. Charles North, the others at St. Charles East – have earned

invitations to this week’s Brine National Lacrosse Classic at one of the sport’s premier cities.

“They’re very known and prominent for their lacrosse up east, but our coaches think we have the potential to hold our ground with them,” Drummond said.

Drummond, Segobiano and Jacob Collins will be midfielders for the All-Midwest Region age group team, while Justin Collins and Nenni help the cause on defense. There are eighth-grade, ninth-grade and

More than 1,900 lacrosse athletes from around the nation are set to take part in the event, which includes showcase games, seminars and training.

Nenni’s father, Michael, coached the freshman group’s Naperville-based club team and is looking forward to being a spectator with other parents. Although he didn’t play lacrosse himself, Michael Nenni warmed quickly to the sport as his three sons did after discovering it in an afterschool enrichment program.

Seeing how some of St. Charles’ top young lacrosse talent competes especially excites him.

“They have great character, they work their butts off,

their parents are fantastic at getting the kids back and forth,” Nenni said.

Although their club profile certainly helped the St. Charles group gain recognition, players still had to try out during the winter at The Dome at Rosemont.

Tryouts consisted of drills and scrimmages, with the ultimate prize the chance to go to Baltimore.

“That was like the biggest news I’ve ever gotten, lacrosse-wise,” Drummond said.

U.S. fullback Beasley lives for big matches

By RICK MAESE The Washington PosT SALVADOR, Brazil – DaMarcus Beasley speaks from experience, of which he has plenty, so no one has to explain to him what’s on the line when the U.S. national team steps on the field today.

“This is what players live for,” Beasley said. “You live to play these types of games.”

By now, Beasley has played many of them, and he knows if the United States can’t get past Belgium in the World Cup’s knockout round, fans could be watching the curtain close one of the most decorated international careers any U.S. player has assembled.

This is the fourth World Cup in which Beasley has appeared in a game. Fewer than 30 players – and no other Americans – have played in that many, a list that includes legends Pele and Diego Maradona.

“Without a doubt,” midfielder Michael Bradley said, Beasley is “one of the best players in U.S. soccer history.”

The team’s next match is today against Belgium.

“What he has done for club teams he has been on, what he has done for the national team, the consistency, the longevity,” Bradley said, “and he continues to show how important he is for us.”

Beasley’s most impressive accomplishment isn’t that he has survived this long; rather, it’s how he’s done it. He’s not the same player who slipped on a U.S. jersey a dozen years ago.

That guy flew up and down the side of the pitch, his legs moving faster than a hummingbird’s wings, Donovan zipping along the opposite side.

“When he was younger, he was probably loud and brash, but he’s calmed down,” U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard said of Beasley. “He’s quiet, he’s a dad – just all the things you’d hope from someone as they mature.”

The energy is still there, enough to allow him to shuttle back and forth between the team’s veterans and its young players. Today marks his 11th appearance in a World Cup

game, one behind Landon Donovan for most among Americans, and his 120th with the U.S. national team, fifth alltime. But unlike that Beasley who was fluttering his way through the 2002 World Cup, this 32-year-old version is able to appreciate the moment.

He knows it could be his last chance to help his team return to the tournament’s quarterfinal round.

“It seems like he gets younger and younger. He never gets tired,” U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. “You want to go home at 3 o’clock at night.

‘Say, DaMarcus, do you want to kick the ball around?’ He’s right there.”

The biggest transformation has taken place on the field. A 20-year-old Beasley was offensive-minded and goal-oriented.

But the Beasley in this tournament, while still a capable attacker, is a fullback tasked with significant defensive responsibilities.

“Back in those days I always wanted to score goals and make the last assist or something like that. But now it’s a different mind-set and I’ve

taken on a new position, a new position I like,” said Beasley, who has played for Mexico’s Puebla since 2011 after several seasons bouncing between European teams.

He still gets up and down the field and seems to always be around the ball, but Beasley hasn’t scored a goal in international competition since 2008. Still, he’s as important as anyone on the field, especially with a back four that has faced plenty of scrutiny heading into the tournament.

“I think that’s the thing with Beas that always excited me,” Howard said, “once he accepted playing fullback, I thought he’d be brilliant. I’m a big fan of wingers becoming fullbacks. I just think it’s a natural progression.”

At times, Beasley can be a sage in cleats, a veteran who’s helping just as much off the field. The U.S. defense still feels like a work in progress, as Klinsmann tweaked the starting lineup before the Germany game, replacing veteran Geoff Cameron with 25-year-old Omar Gonzalez.

The younger players say Bea-

sley has been generous with advice but also quick to give encouragement or congratulations. Other times he sets an example without ever opening his mouth.

“Nothing really freaks him out,” said Gonzalez. “He is always calm, cool, collected and it is great having a guy who’s that secure and knows what is going on in the back line.”

The U.S. team’s fate could hinge on it. Belgium won its three group stage games by one goal apiece and with the U.S. offense struggling to find the net, today’s match could be a low-scoring affair. As they have for the past dozen years, the American squad will look again to Beasley, who has changed himself and his game to evolve into the player his team needs most.

“I still play the same,” Beasley said. “I still play with the same heart and desire to win every game, to win every tackle, to maybe score a goal – doesn’t matter.

“I like big games. I like being under the lights. I like playing in front of 80,000 people.”

*** Q: My aunt left me a lamp. The base is a figurine of an 18th-century woman sitting at a piano gazing affectionately at a man with a lute.

It sits on an oval brass base. Two curved arms extend from the back and they are decorated with a metal vine and tiny porcelain flowers. In the 1940s, my aunt was window shopping in Chicago with a friend, when she spotted and admired this lamp. Later, the bell boy in her hotel delivered it to her room. It was a gift!

I’m interested in learning its maker and history. Value, too.

A: Your lamp is a typical example of porcelain made in the town of Dresden, Germany. Dresden porcelain is known for its naturalistic flowers and gilt trim, reticulation (cutout areas) and lace decorations.

Figurines of 18th-century ladies and gentlemen, romantic couples, animal groups, cherubs and mythological subjects were popular. The most famous Dresden figurines are called “crinoline groups,” which show court-life scenes like people dancing and playing instruments.

More than 200 porcelain-decorating studios operated in Dresden in the late 1800s and early 1900s. They decorated white porcelain made in Germany, Austria and France. Most porcelain blanks were not marked with the manufacturer’s mark. Your lamp probably was made in the

The mottled brown glaze is known as Rockingham. Bennett made Rebekah at the Well teapots until the factory closed in 1936.

The relief design was so popular it was copied by other makers in the United States and England. It can be found on teapots, sugar bowls, pitchers and other items. Flags, eagles, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, the Statue of Liberty, Uncle Sam and other patriotic symbols are very popular with collectors. The image gives a simple message of patriotism to Americans. You can find them in advertisements, as textile designs, on dinnerware or made into figurines for the fireplace mantel. Folk artists often made large wooden carvings to be displayed publicly. But the price depends on the fame and skill of the artist, the age and size of the piece, and how it was used before it was sold to a collector. A large carved hanging wall eagle by John Bellamy (1836-1914) or an eagle made to display on a table made by the Wilhelm Schimmel (1817-1890) sells for thousands of dollars. An ordinary eagle by an unknown carver can be a bargain. This 35-inch-high painted wooden eagle sold for $47, slightly less than estimated, at a Copake auction in upstate New York.

A: Your scarf commemorates battles in the “Glorious Revolution,” when the Catholic king of England, James, was overthrown and replaced by the Protestant King William. The figure on the horse is William, who invaded England at the invitation of parliament in 1688. He and his wife, Mary, were crowned as monarchs of England in 1689.

Then William invaded Scotland and Ireland, and became king of those countries, too. The places listed along the sides of your scarf were famous battles in Ireland. These battles still are commemorated by Orangemen in the Protestant parts of Ireland.

Every moment seems like it could lead Natia to pull the trigger, whether she’s being stalked by a young man trying to force her into marriage or dealing with the hateful bully who terrorizes her best friend’s walk home from school.

The deadly weapon is usually out of sight, but it’s never far from mind during “In Bloom.” The object charges even the most banal moments as the two girls come of age in Tbilisi, Georgia, during the early 1990s.

most gentle narrative thread – Natia’s fledgling relationship with a boy named Kopla (Giorgi Aladashvili) – has an ominous feel. He’s the one who gives her the gun, just before he departs for Moscow. His timing couldn’t be worse, as the sinister Kote (Zurab Gogaladze) is set on turning Natia into a child bride. (Bridal kidnapping has been a persistent problem in countries around the world, including many former Soviet republics.)

The whole unsettling scenario mirrors the state of Georgia at the time. The country was in the midst of civil war, and although no battles are fought where the girls live, reminders are everywhere, from talk of boys taking up arms and leaving town to radio dispatches about bombings in Sukhumi.

Later, that city would be the sight of a horrifying massacre, and the reality of what’s

to come hangs over the movie. Violence is inescapable.

There is an obliqueness to “In Bloom.”

Writer Nana Ekvtimishvili, who directed the movie with Simon Gross, doesn’t spell things out, and the complete story never comes into focus.

That sense also is reflected in the way the movie is shot. In a scene where Eka is dancing during a wedding reception, we never see her feet, even as the other guests are hollering in appreciation. The viewer becomes keenly aware that she is only getting part of the story. But when the truth is so troubling, sometimes part of the story is more than enough.

• “In Bloom” received three out of four stars. The film is unrated and contains strong language. It is in Georgian with subtitles and runs 102 minutes.

Stop drinking to prevent recurrence of pancreatitis Dear Doctor K: My doctor has diagnosed me with chronic pancreatitis. Could this be related to my drinking? Can this condition be reversed?

Dear Reader: Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, the large gland that lies behind the stomach. (I’ve put an illustration of the pancreas on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Most cases of chronic pancreatitis are caused by long-term overuse of alcohol. Alcohol can bring on acute, or sudden, inflammation of the pancreas. If you keep drinking too much, you often get repeated attacks of acute pancreatitis. The pancreas heals itself after each of the first several attacks and resumes normal function.

However, if you continue to drink after repeated bouts of acute pancreatitis, you are more likely to develop chronic, or lasting, pancreatitis. The pancreas is permanently damaged.

The pancreas has two general roles. First, it produces digestive enzymes that are released into your intestine. The enzymes break apart the food you’ve eaten into tiny, digestible packages.

Without this, the energy and nutrients in your food won’t get digested; they won’t get into the blood and be carried throughout the body to all of the cells that need them. As a result, people with chronic pancreatitis can lose

The pancreas also produces hormones that control the level of sugar in your blood. The bestknown hormone is insulin. Over time, a damaged pancreas can fail to produce enough insulin, resulting in diabetes.

Chronic pancreatitis cannot be cured, but you can prevent further damage to your pancreas by eliminating alcohol use.

The most common symptom of pancreatitis is upper abdominal pain. The pain can occur daily or off and on, and it can be mild or intense. Once chronic pain develops, it tends to be long-lasting.

Don’t misunderstand: Pancreatitis is more than just a bad bellyache. An attack of pancreatitis can be very serious, leading to shock and even to death.

For milder types of pain, acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) may help.

Narcotic medications help control more severe pain. Many patients require long-term pain medications. If your pain isn’t well-managed, consult a pain specialist.

People who quit drinking are more likely to have only mild or occasional pain. If you continue to

drink alcohol, you’re more likely to have disabling, daily pain that may require hospitalization.

While repeated bouts of pancreatitis from drinking don’t appear to increase the risk of pancreatic cancer, there is a rare inherited form of recurrent pancreatitis that does increase the risk of cancer.

Your doctor will likely prescribe supplemental digestive enzymes. These will help with problems absorbing food, and with resulting vitamin deficiencies. Your doctor also may recommend that you follow a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet that restricts some types of fats. Once your digestive problems are treated, you should gain back weight you’ve lost. Symptoms such as diarrhea should improve.

If you have diabetes caused by chronic pancreatitis, you will require treatment with insulin.

Pancreatitis can also develop from conditions other than drinking too much alcohol. An example is gallstones. Nevertheless, drinking causes most cases. Therefore, for most people, pancreatitis is a disease they bring on themselves – and that they can prevent from recurring.

Pen pal thinks he’s in love Dr. Wallace: For the past year, I have been pen pals with a boy from Nova Scotia, Canada. He’s 16 and I’m 15 and we write to each other once a week. I love having a pen pal and I always answer his letters the day I receive them.

I’ve given him interesting facts about living in Southern California, and he told me he wants to visit California when he graduates.

My problem is that he has been writing that he thinks he is in love with me and he wants me to go steady even though we haven’t met in person. We had exchanged valentines for Valentine’s Day and sent each other photographs, so I guess that is his reason. Now he says that he will graduate in two years and he will come to visit me then.

From his letters, I think he is a nice person and I like him, but I’m not sure going steady is a good idea. I haven’t given him any answer yet, but I’m hesitating and I’d like your opinion before I decide. – Undecided, San Clemente, Calif.

Dear Undecided: It is great fun to have a pen pal, and I can understand the mystery of romance that can creep into a long-distance correspondence, but I see no value in going steady.

Think about this: Why would you eliminate the possibility of dating other boys because you are going steady with someone you have never met and wouldn’t see for at least two years? You would also miss many high school activities, including school dances and the prom.

My advice is to wait until you both have met and had a chance

Dr. Wallace: We have always had a parking problem at our high school, but it is even worse when the weather is bad. Before school was out, the student council discussed the parking problem and they suggested that next year students with a valid driver’s license would be assigned a numbered parking space that would be theirs for the entire year. Since some spaces will be more convenient than others, the plan would be to draw numbers by grade, beginning with the seniors. The number of cards to be drawn from would equal the number of eligible drivers in each class.

Of course, there are some underclass students who think it’s unfair and that all the driving students should draw from the total number of spaces.

Which plan do you think is best for our school? – Darla, Detroit, Mich.

Dear Darla: Seniority has its privileges. Senior licensed drivers should get first choice followed by juniors, and then sophomores.

I like the idea of each student driver having a designated parking spot, but what happens when an “uninformed” driver parks in someone else’s spot? It would help if a sign would be posted to indicate “assigned parking only.”

Today’s deal looks similar to yesterday’s, but the correct declarer play is different. As in yesterday’s column, South is in six spades and West leads the heart queen. How should declarer continue?

When North had just enough to raise two spades to three spades, South bid what he hoped he could make.

If declarer were asked immediately to state a line of play, he would probably say that he would take two diamond finesses, getting to the dummy once with the spade queen and once with a heart ruff.

Yes, that is a 76 percent line of play, but loses with this layout. However, there is an even better strategy. Do you see it?

Dummy has few values, but its three honor cards can all be used with effect. After taking the first trick with his heart ace, South should cash his spade ace, club ace and heart king.

Then he ruffs his third heart on the board and leads the club queen.

If East can cover with the king, South ruffs, plays a spade to dummy’s queen, and discards a diamond on the club jack.

Here, though, when East plays a low club, declarer pitches his diamond 10.

Suppose that West wins with his king and leads his last trump. South takes the trick in the dummy and throws his diamond queen on the club jack. He loses only one club and wins six spades, two hearts, one diamond, two clubs and the heart ruff.
