OUT AND ABOUT ‘Keep It Sparkling’ event in Batavia BATAVIA – The Batavia Fireworks Committee will host the second annual “Keep It Sparkling” event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at K. Hollis Jewelers, 147 S. Randall Road, Batavia.

The purpose of the event is to raise funds for the Fourth of July Sky Concert in Batavia.

The “Keep It Sparkling” event will include a silent auction, raffle prizes, food and beverages, live music, a Batavia trivia contest, light-up rings, a treasure hunt in the store, awards and patriotic parting favors.

A percentage of everything sold that evening will be given to the Fireworks Committee by Karen and Rob Hollis. Cost is $20 a person if paid online via PayPal at www.bataviafireworks.org or in person at K. Hollis Jewelers by Tuesday.

‘Glories of Summer’ Garden Walk ST. CHARLES – The Pottawatomie Garden Club is sponsoring a “Glories of Summer” Garden Walk and Boutique on June 21. People can start the walk at any time between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The starting point for the walk is 47 Aintree Road, St. Charles.

Participants can stroll through six gardens, varying from a quaint cottage garden to an estate garden nestled in the woods.

Otto receives DAR award

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ELGIN – Pam Otto has worked for park districts for more than 14 years, but she’s been a lover of the outdoors all her life.

“My earliest memories are being outside catching bugs, staring at them in wonder and thinking, ‘I’ve gotta learn more,’ ” Otto said.

Otto’s search for answers and exploration led her to a job with the Fox Valley Park District after a stint in writing and publishing. Then in 2007, she joined the St. Charles Park District in the city she has called home since 1993.

Thanks in part to the St. Charles district, Otto on Saturday received the 2014 Conservation Award from the Elias Kent Kane Chapter of the Daughters of the Amer-

ican Revolution. The award ceremony was part of the Kane chapter’s June luncheon at the Elgin County Country Club in Elgin.

Gayla Steel, regent of the Kane DAR chapter, pinned a medal to the lapel of Otto’s black Hickory Knolls Discovery Center jacket before giving her the award certificate and a hug.

The luncheon audience of about 50 people included a few St. Charles Park District staff members, including Laura Rudow, Otto’s supervisor and superintendent of parks and planning, and Holly Cabel, director of parks and recreation.

Cabel said Otto was definitely the park district’s candidate for the award, which is given to those who contribute to education, youth leadership and conservation-related media. Otto is the park district’s

manager of nature programs and interpretive services.

Otto explains conservation in a way that’s easy to understand to others through presentations and in her written columns, Cabel said. Otto is also a member of the Park District’s Green Team and provides conservation tips to the staff, such as how to understand the numbers on recyclable containers.

Receiving the Conservation Award is no easy feat, said Sharon Hare, the DAR Kane chapter’s conservation chair.

Award nominees have to be vetted by the local chapter and then at the state level.

Otto said she was thrilled to be nominated. It’s an honor to receive an award for talking to people and inspiring them about their surroundings, she said.

“I’d be doing this whether I had a job or not,” Otto said.

ST. CHARLES – After competing in dragon boat racing for three years in a row, Elburn resident Julie Keen knows the importance of teamwork.

“That’s the most important thing, to have a group of people who can keep in rhythm,” Keen said.

Dragon boat racing was just part of the fun Sunday at the City of St. Charles RiverFest. The three-day festival concluded Sunday.

Keen was taking part in a long tradition. The sport of dragon boat racing was thought to have originated in southern central China more than 2,500 years ago.

The dragon boat races also have been an integral part of the festival, which celebrated its 32nd anniversary this year. Keen has been participating for the past three years as part of the FitMama Dragon Boat Racing team.

FitMama is a fitness facility in Elburn. The team is the only all-female team that competes in the dragon boat races.

“We do it for camaraderie,” Keen said. “It’s fun to

The Saints lost Saturday night’s IHSA Class 3A girls soccer state championship match to New Trier, 1-0, but the Saints’ play – a state championship-caliber performance, in coach Paul Jennison’s estimation – provided a large measure of solace.

“When these girls got to raise that second-place trophy and the fans are right behind them, that’s the stuff they’ll remember,” Jennison said as a postgame drizzle fell on the North Central College turf. “They won’t remember the score but they’ll remember the whole setting, they’ll remember the fans they had, they’ll remember the support they had. That makes it all worthwhile.

“There weren’t many tears. A lot of them knew they left it all out there. I couldn’t ask for any more. If you’d have offered me this at the start of the season, I’d have snapped your hands off and said ‘Absolutely.’ ” New Trier finished the season 31-1, its lone loss coming to Waubonsie Valley, the team the Trevians ousted in Friday’s state semifinal. Waubonsie won third place over Lincoln-Way North preceding Saturday’s championship match.

East (19-5-5) conceded an early goal for the second straight day when New Trier defender Sarah Connors doubled her season goal output by lofting a 40-plus yard shot that floated just beyond the reach of Saints goalkeeper Kendra Sheehan, who had started the match with a pair of quality saves in the opening minutes.

“It was one of those that kind of had a backspin on it almost that was bringing it farther than I thought it would,” Sheehan said. “I credit the shot, it was a very nice shot, and it was perfect placement, upper-90, corner.

After Connors’ goal with 33:22 to play in the opening half, East gained traction and carried play for most of the rest of the half. East’s best scoring opportunity came when junior Darcy Cunningham darted in off a deft set-up from senior Anna Corirossi but Cunningham’s shot in-

by New Trier goalkeeper Dani Kaufman.

“It was a great give-and-go between Anna and I,” Cunningham said. “She always plays me right where I need it. I probably chose the wrong shot selection. I should have slotted it to the corner, and I shot it straight at the keeper.”

East narrowly outshot New Trier, 15-14, though the Trevians forced Sheehan to make 10 saves while Kaufman had four stops. East, however, rifled several others that flirted with tying the match, including a free kick from Shannon Rasmussen with about 6 minutes left in the second half that whistled a couple feet above the crossbar.

Rasmussen (four shot attempts) and Cunningham (three) were consistently dangerous while East’s midfield – led by seniors Amanda Hilton and Corirossi, plus junior Kelli Santo Paulo – continued to win more than their share of balls to facilitate the Saints’ possession.

Jennison thought East deserved a better fate.

“That’s the beauty and the tragedy of soccer is that the best team doesn’t always win,” Jennison said. “But I do want to give big congratulations to New Trier. Any team that can defend like they did,

those kids are just rock solid.”

The result marked the 11th straight shutout win for the Trevians, who prevented the Saints from winning the program’s first state title since St. Charles High split.

East’s orange-clad fans nonetheless maintained high spirits during the trophy presentation, and East players credited Saints fans’ energetic cheers and chants for lifting their morale during and after the match.

“Our hearts were full coming in and our hearts are full right now,” Hilton said.

Hilton, a four-year varsity pillar for the Saints, planned to hit the road Sunday morning for Nebraska as she gears up for college soccer.

Her final moments as a Saint made for quite the sendoff.

“Two big things,” Hilton said. “Let’s just say this is a weekend I will never forget for the rest of my life. For good reasons.”

As the Storm have contended all along, they’re a different group than the one that had its ups and downs during the Upstate Eight Conference season.

“We’ve been really hot hitting and our pitching has been working all year,” second baseman Tommy Kramer said. “So it’s really been our hitting that’s stepped up.”

South Elgin out-hit top-seeded Batavia (32-341), 11-7, but also capitalized on three Bulldogs errors and an aggressive base running strategy. Batavia had two runners thrown out at the plate.

While the Storm reached

“We’re trying to turn a double play to get out of an inning, and then all of a sudden, it turns into a four-run inning,” Bulldogs coach Matt Holm said.

“Once it stops hurting, we’ll definitely look back and smile,” Coffey said. “Doing stuff that’s never been done for the school and just the memories that we made. I kind of tried to tell everybody before the game, you know, let’s make a memory today, on any given day. I know I’ve got a bunch. Can’t thank the guys enough for that.”

Along with handshakes, hugs and thank-yous, Holm shared that rhetoric with players.

“How many people, how many teams have walked away at the end of the year and said, ‘OK, that was a pretty good season’ or, ‘I can’t wait to get done with the season’?” Holm said.

“These guys have invested so much that they have the right to hurt for awhile, and then they can take a step back and look at it, and go, ‘God, that was unbelievable.’ You know, it really was an unbelievable season with incredible seniors, incredible leadership.”

SCHAUMBURG – Reminders to remove dugout trash or to hurry for waiting buses pass extremely innocently during 23game winning streaks.

On Saturday, those routine words carried like a line drive off the wall for Batavia baseball players. The Bulldogs offered little to compete above them for the first time in six weeks.

South Elgin snapped Batavia’s run and ended its season with an 8-3 victory in the Class 4A Schaumburg Sectional final.

All too suddenly, those final high-fives, hugs – and even instructions – had arrived.

“That’s exactly it,” senior third baseman Micah Coffey said. “I feel like we’ve earned every bit of hurt that we’re feeling right now. I wasn’t with the guys in the winter because of basketball, but these dudes, they’ve been at it. They’ve been goal-setting and they’ve been working their tails off since back when last season ended.

“Over the summer, into the fall. I just can’t say enough for the effort that they’ve put into it. And again, our coaches. The time that they’ve put into us and invested into us, I’m so thankful for that.”

South Elgin (24-10) turned the tables on the same pitcher who defeated it in mid-April to advance to the program’s first supersectional.

Brown relied on a curveball that was “breaking like crazy” to keep hitters guessing. He proved rather fond of that word after the game.

“It’s crazy. I was just pumped up. Everyone was pumped up today,” Brown said. “We’ve made it to this game, but this is the first time we’ve ever won a sectional championship.”

Batavia amped up its offseason dedication knowing a strong core of seniors returned alongside a promising bunch of juniors, including lefty Evan Acosta, who pitched 3⅔ innings of relief.

After an extra-inning scare from Bartlett in the regional opener, the Bulldogs seemed to relocate their pulse and maintained that confidence Saturday.
