“It’s a tradition in Batavia,” Guajardo said. “People love coming here, and it’s a great cause.”

Fire causes $5,000 in damage to St. Charles apartment complex

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A fire that broke out Saturday afternoon on the balcony of a St. Charles apartment caused an estimated $5,000 in damage, according to a St. Charles Fire Department news release.

No one was injured in the incident, which fire crews

first received as a report at 1:22 p.m. Saturday of a structure fire, the release states.

The apartment is at the AMLI apartment complex in the 100 block of Lakeside Drive in St. Charles.

“Firefighters were on the scene by 1:24 [p.m.] and found visible smoke and fire showing from a third-floor balcony,” fire officials wrote in the

release.

The firefighters had to force entry into the apartment connected to the balcony, St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said in an phone interview on Saturday. “[The female occupant] was unaware that there was fire on her balcony,” Schelstreet said.

The female inside the apartment was able to leave on her

own while the firefighters took care of the fire. They were able to extinguish the blaze in about 20 minutes and prevent it from reaching the inside of the building, according to the release.

The fire was discovered by a neighbor of the apartment complex, who then called 911. The cause of the fire was attributed to careless use of

smoking materials outside the apartment unit, according to the release.

The apartment remains habitable, and the management staff from the complex is working with the occupant for repairs, the release states.

The Batavia, Geneva, and West Chicago fire departments assisted the St. Charles Fire Department with this incident.

ST. CHARLES – Canoeists and kayakers lined up with their boats Sunday at Mount St. Mary Park in St. Charles for the 54th annual Mid-American Canoe and Kayak Race.

Boats were of every hue – from bright lime green and neon orange to camouflage, sky blue and plain gray.

Sponsored by the Fox Valley Park District, about 500 participants launched boats in St. Charles for a 10-mile race and from the VFW in Batavia for a six-mile race, ending up at McCullough Park in Aurora.

Paddlers waited in groups of 10 boats, which were launched every four minutes. Among them were Scott and Kim Cole of Elburn with daughter, Eloise, 10 and son, Patrick, 19.

“This is our first time,” Scott Cole said. “For fun.”

North stays level-headed, wins sectional

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ROLLING MEADOWS – A few paces away from the gloves and visors scattered about the Rolling Meadows softball infield rested a tiara, antler headband and plastic fireman helmet, among other headgear.

St. Charles North players will tell you this equipment, the North Stars’ rally caps since the Class 4A postseason opened, is just as vital to their well-being as the stuff usually stored in bat bags.

“We always play better when we’re loose,” senior shortstop Allison Hausl said.

“So it was just an idea to keep us loose and have some fun.”

To be sure, the North Stars let silliness shine through Saturday after grit propelled them to a 3-2, nine-inning victory against top-seeded Schaumburg for the Rolling Meadows Sectional title.

At least temporarily, anyway. North (29-5) will don its rally caps again at 6:30 p.m. today, when it faces Oak Park-River Forest for the Rosemont Supersectional crown at the Ballpark in Rosemont.

“We just celebrate all our hard work, and now we’re going to go out and practice some more,” left fielder Jordyn Wolfe said. “We just work to our goal, which is just to try to win as many games as possible.”

Freshman right-hander Jillian Waslawski – she of the tiara, from her personal collection – highlighted North’s latest victory, which snapped the Saxons’ 30-game winning streak.

Scattering nine hits, four walks and one strikeout, Waslawski displayed once more the poise and confidence that helps her pitch to contact and rely on a slick defense.

She admittedly acted like a freshman first.

“I mean, I was pretty nervous coming into this game,” Waslawski said. “I knew it was going to be a tough one. I mean, they’re a great opponent. But I felt good with my team behind me.”

With the game tied at 2 and Schaumburg (31-2) revving up its offense after scoring the tying run an inning earlier, the Saxons quickly moved a runner into scoring position with one out.

In stepped Schaumburg’s No. 3 hitter, shortstop Shannon Felde, a core member of a lineup that smacked an IHSA-record 65 home runs this season. North coach Tom Poulin called for a walk of Felde, but the threats were no less imminent with pitcher Paige Alt, first baseman Christina Candotti and third baseman Natalie Napier next.

Waslawski sandwiched two groundouts between an intentional walk that loaded the bases to escape the jam.

“It was a little boost of, I guess, confidence and kind of a springing through the game,” Waslawski said.

North also walked Felde in the fifth and ninth. Schaumburg’s lone RBIs came from leadoff hitter Elaine Walker’s one-out solo homer in the third and No. 8 batter Roxanne Kakareka’s infield single in the sixth.

“At this point, you have to be confident in your decisions,” Poulin said. “Some things don’t work out, but as long as they’re well thought out and you’re confident in them … you give your kids the best chance to win.”

Especially when it came to Felde, Hausl agreed.

“She has a killer bat,” Hausl said, “so we trusted our defense after her.”

North reached Felde for six runs in the early innings of the Saxons’ only other 2015 loss.

Alt neutralized the North Stars for the rest of a nonconference game April 1 at Schaumburg, but the early eruption was enough in North’s 6-2 win.

The North Stars, who now have outscored opponents, 296, in four postseason games, didn’t need much extra effort to put that result behind them after blanking Elk Grove, 5-0, in Tuesday’s sectional semifinal.

“You know what,” Wolfe said, “we just stick together and we play like every game is our last. … We don’t really care about any others. The most important game is the next game we play.”

For Schaumburg, the next engagement on its calendar won’t be until the 2016 season opener. The Saxons stranded 12 runners to North’s five.

“Everybody’s got to do their job, you know,” Saxons coach Ellen Abreu said. “The leadoff kid has to get on base, we’ve got to move her over and then we’re got to get them in. Everybody did their job of getting on, it’s just we fell a little short getting some runs in at times.

But the game could have gone either way at any given time.”

North first baseman Allison Moberg’s infield single produced the eventual winning run in the ninth, scoring Wolfe, who opened the inning with a single and promptly stole second base.

Speedy leadoff hitter Kaitlyn Waslawski, the North Stars’ center fielder and Jillian’s older sister, hit an inside the park home run down the right field line as part of a two-run third inning. Amanda James had an RBI single one batter earlier but was caught stealing with Waslawski at bat.

Back in the dugout, her rally cap close at hand, James suddenly felt less remorse as she watched Waslawski dart around the bases.

“All of our mindsets are get on base, get on base. Aggressive on the bases once you get on base,” James said. “That was her.”

The Knights’ offense help create an early cushion for Morrow (16-2). Kaneland, which had every leadoff batter reach base in the contest, scored two runs in the bottom of the first. Runs were at a premium early with the Knights scoring one more in the fourth when Mary Lynn Clausen scoring on a Rachel Goress ground out.

St. Francis threatened in the bottom of the third inning with a runner on third with one out. Fiona Summers hit a groundball to Morgan Sikon at second base. The senior calmly threw the ball to home to Kuelfer, who made the tag

on Carley Pasquale heading home. Two batters later, Morrow got out of the inning with a strikeout.

“We definitely went into these games knowing that we were the fifth seed and that they seeded us low,” Morrow said. “We had to prove people wrong and that was our job.”

In that big fifth inning, Kaneland got RBI hits from Clausen and Goress to push the lead out to 6-0. After Hannah Theobald scored on a past ball, Kuelfer sent a shot to deep-centerfield and gave the Knights a 10-0 lead.

RBI hits from Clausen again and Morgan Weber capped a huge inning for Kaneland.

“No matter what the score is, I am always telling the girls to stay on top of things and

we are always going to pound them no matter what the score is,” Kuefler said. “We want this game, so we are going to keep going.”

Clausen led Kaneland at the plate by going 3 for 3 with three singles, two runs scored and two RBIs. Goress finished with two hits and two runs. Alyson Jesionowski reached base four times and scored twice.

The supersectional game today will be the next step in the Kaneland softball players reaching their dream. Kaneland is now a win away from its first state appearance since 2000.

“These girls have always said their goal is to make it to state,” Goff said. “These girls are just locked in, and I am very proud of them.”

Rockets can’t solve Dionne in loss

But after loading the bases with one out, the Rockets couldn’t make contact. Dionne struck out the final two batters of the first inning, keeping the Rockets off the scoreboard in the opening inning of Saturday’s Class 3A Belvidere North Sectional softball final.

The Indians went on to score twice in the bottom half of the inning against junior pitcher Emily Kisch, and the Rockets never recovered in a 4-0 loss.

Marengo (33-6) advanced to play Wauconda, which defeated Carmel, 10-0, in six innings in the Grayslake Central Sectional final, in an Evanston Supersectional at Northwestern today.

LOMBARD – After four innings of the Class 3A Montini Sectional championship, the Kaneland softball team led by three runs, but there was tension in the air as a St. Francis batter had reached base in three of the four innings.

Then, the Knights completely broke the game wide open.

Kaneland sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the fifth inning and scored nine runs on seven hits, including a Paige Kuefler 3-run home run.

This inning put the game out of reach, and the Knights won 12-0 in five innings to claim its first sectional title since 2003.

tional as the five seed and will now play Nazareth Academy at 4:30 p.m. today at the Ballpark at Rosemont Stadium in Rosemont.

“In playoffs, we have been playing like no other team,” Kuefler said. “We have been on top of things. We made a couple of errors, but we pick each other up and we make it up in hitting.”

The Kaneland battery of pitcher Angie Morrow and Kuefler were dominant all day for the Knights (23-8). Morrow was strong in the circle and struck out 11 Spartans for the complete-game shutout.

“When they hit those corners, Angie does a good job,” Knights coach Peter Goff said.

It is great in bridge to have double the chance to make the opponents cross by getting home in your contract. This is especially true when they can see that you would have failed with a different line of play or defense.

In this deal, South is in four hearts. West cashes his three spade winners, then shifts to a diamond. How should declarer continue?

South would have done well to rebid three no-trump. North would have had nine top tricks.

But jumping to four hearts was hard to criticize (and he might have bid it on the first round).

Some pairs lead the queen from a suit headed by the top three honors, asking partner to signal count. That is not a bad idea.

South must avoid losing a minor-suit trick. At first glance, he seems to need the club finesse to work. But declarer has two chances to get home. He should win with dummy’s diamond ace, ruff a diamond in his hand, cash the heart ace, play a heart to dummy’s 10, and ruff another diamond.

Here, the king appears, so South draws trumps, crosses to dummy’s club ace, and discards his second club on the diamond queen. But if the diamond king does not drop, declarer runs his trumps, planning to fall back on the club finesse.

Yes, a club shift at trick four by West would have been fatal, but that was not obvious.
