spent some time a couple of weeks ago with the Mann family in their Sugar Grove home.

Jason and Gretchen Mann are trying to raise funds to

buy a service dog for their 5-year-old son, Marshall, who has autism.

I wasn’t there more than 10 minutes before Marshall hugged my neck while I sat

on the floor photographing him playing with his toy trains.

His parents said he loves to play with people’s hair, as he began to play with mine.

He is such a sweet boy, and I was so glad I was able to capture him as he fell into his mom, Gretchen’s, arms as she sat on the living room sofa.

LOCAL BRIEF Company voluntarily recalls cracker products Baptista’s Bakery and Glutino, a division of GFA Brands, are voluntarily recalling some of their cracker products in response to the recall of the seasoning blend by Kerry Ingredients because of possible salmonella contamination.

No illnesses had been reported as of Wednesday morning, states a news release from the Kane County Health Department, but the products were distributed nationally.

’Glories of Summer’ Garden Walk and Boutique

Longtime St. Patrick Catholic School principal retires

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – For the first time in 37 years, Joseph Battisto is not worrying about the future.

That’s because this school year was Battisto’s last as principal of St. Patrick Catholic School in St. Charles, a position he has held for 20 years.

He is retiring this month for unspecified health reasons.

The past few months have been a extended goodbye to Battisto, and Thursday was no different. During a luncheon held in Battisto’s honor, many of the school’s teachers and staff members shook his hand and gave him hugs.

Many of the well-wishers thanked Battisto for his contributions and dedication to the school. Battisto usually would arrive to the school every day in his 14-year-old Toyota Camry at about 5:30 a.m., and he wouldn’t leave until 7 p.m., said Monsignor Joseph Linster, St. Patrick’s former pastor.

“You’re only as good as the people who surround you, and I could have never been surrounded by a better principal than Joe Battisto,” Linster said.

To replace his worn-out Camry, the school community

The St. Patrick Catholic School community has organized several gifts for retiring principal Joseph Battisto. To contribute to a scholarship in his name, a statue of the Holy Family or the fund to replace Battisto’s car, contact Sister Liz Ryan at 630-338-8100 through June 30. has started a fund to buy a new car for Battisto.

Other gifts presented to him in the past few days include a scholarship in his name and plans to dedicate a statute of the Holy Family to him on school grounds.

Battisto, who received a standing ovation Sunday during a celebratory Mass in his honor, said he was overwhelmed by the parish’s generosity.

“I very much appreciate all the consideration and thoughtfulness that I’ve received from everyone,” Battisto said Thursday during the luncheon.

As he reflected on his 20 years at the school, Battisto said he was proud or seeing the staff work in a faith-filled environment with students on a daily basis. He said he also was glad to contribute to the parish’s program to build the

current K-8 St. Patrick School on Crane Road, which opened in 2011.

Without Battisto’s input, the school wouldn’t have the number of classrooms that it does and facilities such as the band room and computer lab that students use every day, Linster said.

Battisto is strong in his leadership and inspiration, said Sister Liz Ryan, the

school’s assistant principal.

She called herself one of the luckiest people in the world to have a boss, a mentor and a friend in Battisto.

Ryan said change in life is important, but Battisto’s retirement will make her sad.

Battisto said he has not made any plans beyond recuperating for his health, but he knows he will miss the school community dearly.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles police officer Scott Coryell sat in his patrol car stationed at the Mobil gas station on Main Street as he watched a group of cars drive by.

Coryell was making sure that motorists weren’t using a hand-held cellphone or some other electronic communication device while driving.

Since Jan. 1, a statewide ban has been in effect, barring motorists from using handheld cellphones while driving.

Drivers are still able to use hands-free devices, including Bluetooth, ear pieces or speaker phones.

In pulling over violators, Coryell said he has found there generally are three types of people who are violating the hand-held cellphone ban. Fines for using a handheld cellphone while driving range from $75 to $150.

“There are those people who generally don’t know the law,” he said. “Then there are the people who are trying, but are not there yet. They have the phone in their hand but are on speaker phone. The last group are those people who know the law, but don’t care.

They do what they want.”

Since Jan. 1, the St. Charles Police Department has handed out 299 warnings and tickets to those motorists using a hand-held cellphone or some other electronic device while driving.

Of that number, 39 motorists were given tickets. Erik Mahan, commander of traffic and special events for the St. Charles Police Department, said the department is handing out more warnings than tickets because they are still trying to educate people about the law.

“We’re trying to focus on the education part of it,” Mahan said. “You do have those people who don’t know or it is

Mahan said he imagines the department will be issuing more tickets in the second half of the year because he said people should be aware of the law by now.

“There has to be enforcement to back it up, as well,” Mahan said. St. Charles Police Department policy requires that officers follow the law, as well.

He said he thinks the law is needed. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, drivers using hand-held devices are four times more likely to get into an accident causing injuries and distracted driving caused 387,000 injuries and more than 3,000 fatali-

ties across the country in 2011.

“If you take your eyes off the road for a few seconds, it can be devastating,” Mahan said.

Not everyone is a fan of the new law. State Rep. Kay Hatcher, R-Yorkville was one of several area legislators who voted against the bill before Gov. Pat Quinn signed it into law.

“It discriminates against people with hearing issues,” Hatcher said. “It is next to impossible to use a hands-free system when you have a hearing aid.”

State Rep. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia, who also voted against the legislation, had said he voted against the bill

because it addressed only one source of distraction, cellphones.

The Geneva Police Department also is trying to educate motorists about the law. Since January, the department has issued 269 warnings to motorists using a hand-held cellphone or some other electronic device while driving, compared to 56 tickets for using a hand-held cellphone.

“It is always at the officer’s discretion to give a warning or a ticket, but our philosophy has always been to educate and educate first,” said Julie Nash, commander of patrol operations for the Geneva Police Department. “The first six months have been about edu-

cation, and I think our numbers show that.”

Whether the hand-held cellphone ban has helped to prevent an accident from happening is hard to detemine, Nash said.

“You never know what you stopped from occurring,” she said. “There is no way to gauge it. You hope these things are working.”

Like other departments, Batavia Police Department also has been in the education mode. Since Jan. 1, the department has issued 20 tickets and 153 warnings to violators, Batavia Police Detective Kevin Bretz said.

“We are hoping that people are learning a lesson and that their call can wait,” Bretz said.

“I think that six months is a long enough period for people to figure out that this is something illegal. It is the driver’s responsibility to know what the rules of the road are. Driving is a privilege, not a right.”

The North Aurora Police Department issued 40 citations and 13 warnings this spring to drivers violating the state’s ban on hand-held cellphones. From April 1 through May 15, North Aurora police officers were out in force looking for distracted driving violations. The department took part in the Illinois State Police and the Illinois Tollway’s Drop it and Drive Campaign, designed to educate drivers about the new state law.

North Aurora Deputy Police Chief Scott Buziecki said the department will continue to aggressively enforce the new law until people change their behavior.

And people are getting the message, from what Elburn Police Chief Steve Smith has seen.

“I rarely see people talking on their cellphones in school zones anymore,” Smith said.

“I think the law is a good thing. People can get distracted from their driving duties.”

Bank employee City prepares for RiverFest charged in theft

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A bank employee at American Heartland Bank in Sugar Grove was indicted late last month on three felony theft charges of taking up to $500,000 of the bank’s money, court records show.

Alyson Ruggie, 30, of the 500 block of Gregory Lane, Plano, was charged Thursday, May 22, with using deception to obtain control of more than $100,000, but not more than $500,000; theft of more than $10,000, but less than $100,000 through unauthorized control of property belonging to TCF Bank with the intent of depriving American Heartland Bank; and misappropriation of financial institution property more than $10,000, but less than $100,000.

The thefts occurred between Jan. 1, 2010, and Jan. 24, 2014, according to court

records.

Sugar Grove Police Chief Patrick Rollins said the money was discovered missing after an external audit. Bank officials suspected the money was missing because of an employee theft and called police to investigate.

“All cash was taken; there were no other documents,” Rollins said. “None of the individual customers’ money was involved. This was solely the bank’s money and did not affect any account holders of the bank.”

Rollins said Ruggie turned herself in to police May 27.

Ruggie was released on $5,000 bail, 10 percent of the $50,000 bond. A hearing on her case is scheduled June 27.

All three felonies have a penalty of three to seven years in prison and fines of up to $25,000.

Bank officials did not return voice mail messages seeking comment.

ST. CHARLES – Alternate routes of travel around downtown St. Charles are encouraged this weekend because of the annual City of St. Charles RiverFest event.

There will be a significant increase in pedestrian and vehicle traffic in and around the downtown area during the three-day festival, according to a news release.

The majority of traffic will be on Main Street between Seventh Street and Seventh Avenue. Several

streets will be closed from 5 a.m. today through midnight Sunday.

Riverside Avenue and First Street will be closed between Main and Illinois streets. Walnut Avenue will be closed between Riverside Avenue and South Second Avenue, according to the release. North Third Street will be closed between Cedar and State streets. North Fourth and Fifth streets will be closed between West Main and Cedar streets.

Several downtown streets and parking lots will have parking restrictions posted.

Motorists are encouraged to check carefully for postings related to parking.

In other news, the Kane County SWAT Team is in search of role players for its live rescue assault demo.

The demo is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. today near Walnut and First streets in downtown St. Charles.

Nonhuman West Nile cases reported KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com The Illinois Department of Public Health has confirmed the first nonhuman cases of the West Nile virus for 2014, the agency announced Wednesday.

Henry County Health Department employees collected a bird that tested positive for the virus May 29 in Colona.

A day later, Madison County Health Department employees collected a positive mosquito batch in Godfrey.

IDPH Director Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck said in a written statement that West Nile virus activity is largely dependent on the weather.

“Despite our cold winter, mosquitoes are becoming active and infected with West Nile virus as the temperature increase,” he said.

“If we see a hot, dry summer, we could see a lot of West Nile virus activity.”

West Nile is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird.

Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches. Symptoms may last from a few days to a few weeks.

About 80 percent of those infected with West Nile will not show any symptoms. In rare cases, severe illness – including meningitis or encephalitis, or even death – can occur. People older than 50 are at higher risk for severe illness.

The state health department encourages people to protect themselves by wearing insect repellent; avoiding the outdoors when mosquitoes are most active, especially between dusk and dawn; and eliminating all sources of standing water, such as flowerpots, wading pools and old tires.

For familiarization tours, Littell said, it is typical to invite 100 and get 10. While this week’s group was smaller than expected because of some late cancellations, it gave the visitors bureau a chance to get to know and build relationships with the attendees, she said.

The hope, she said, is that the event planners will return to St. Charles with their groups and associations.

The two-day itinerary included visits to Fine Line Cre-

ative Arts, Pheasant Run Resort and Hotel Baker. Mayor Ray Rogina and City Administrator Mark Koenen were expected to attend a breakfast today for the group at the Hilton Garden Inn and Suites.

The tour kicked off at Country Garden Cuisine Cooking School in Campton Hills. There, founder Penny Newkirk told the group about the 1800s farmstead and its gardens before inviting them inside to prepare some dishes.

“This is a very laid-back experience,” Newkirk told the group gathered around the kitchen counter.

Effort to break record for group hug on hold

“It’s too massive of an undertaking to do it by September,” said Batavia resident Randy Simonian, who had been organizing the Batavia Group Hug. “Basically, it’s a timing thing.”

Simonian had hoped to

surpass the current Guinness World Record for largest group hug of 10,554 people, set in May 2010 in Ontario in Canada.

He said the Batavia Group Hug might happen at a later date.

“If not a group hug, we are going to break a world record of some sort,” Simonian said.

“The excitement of breaking a world record is on everybody’s mind right now.”

Simonian said he is used to organizing large events, because he plans large-scale corporate events for a living.

In a post on Batavia Group Hug’s Facebook page, Simonian wrote that “Due to multiple constraints [time, spon-

sorship, volunteers, finances, time, time, time...], it would be near impossible to safely break the record, with only three months of production time remaining.

“I’d truly need a small, full-time team to accomplish our goal,” he wrote. “With the world watching, there’s nothing that would break my heart more than a failed attempt for Batavia ... or worse yet, some unknown obstacle that puts our friends and neighbors in harm’s way.”

He enlisted in the Navy in 1985 and proudly served his country for more than 20 years, his last station on the U.S.S. Donald Cook. He retired with numerous medals and citations.

Paul is survived by his father, Daniel Retacco, of Appleton, Wisconsin, and his wife, Carole; his brother, John Retacco of Aurora and wife, Lisa, and their sons, Christopher and Alexander; and his sister, Maryellen Conner of Foster City, California, her husband, Michael, and their children, Kathleen and Daniel.

He will be greatly missed by his stepson, Philip Palmer and family; and especially by his loving partner, Amy Murrell of Alton.

Police chief honored for work de-stigmatizing mental illness

By NATALIE WICKMAN nwickman@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The Illinois State Bar Association presented its 2014 Law Enforcement Award to Dan Hoffman, Campton Hills police chief, for his work to end mental health stigma in the police force.

After Judith Brawka, chief judge of the 16th Judicial Circuit, nominated Hoffman for the award, he was selected by Vincent Cornelius, third president of the Illinois State Bar Association.

About 26 people attended the award presentation luncheon, held Thursday in the Kane County Judicial Center.

“If it wasn’t for law enforcement involvement and understanding as first responders with the mentally ill, tragedies would abound everywhere,” Brawka said.

Hoffman helped develop his department’s Crisis Intervention Team protocols and training for first-responding police

in situations of mental illness or emotional conflict, which includes a 40-hour class and redeploying exercises.

Participants learn how to recognize mental health symptoms and deal with them effectively by working with mental health or outpatient facilities if needed.

This is done instead of putting the mentally ill into the criminal justice system right away.

“The criminal justice system will just put [the mentally ill] into a circle of despair,” Hoffman said. “Law enforcement, myself included, was not trained [on] how to specifically deal with people with mental health issues. But when you fully train officers, they’ll be able to deal with [the mentally ill] while still doing it in an expeditious fashion.”

The program still is new, and Hoffman said he’s working toward it becoming established throughout all of Kane County.

According to the ISBA, the

Law Enforcement Award recognizes law enforcement officers who “facilitate a better understanding of the criminal justice system, encourage respect for the law or promote justice.”

“This is not an award that we give every year. It’s not an award we take lightly,” Cornelius said. “It’s one that we give much consideration, and it’s one that we give to people ... who have a special concern for community, beyond the title of the job.”

Cornelius described Hoffman’s work as transformational. “[Choosing Hoffman] was a no-brainer,” Cornelius said.

“It was not a difficult decision at all.”

Hoffman also is a member of the Kane County Mental Health Task Force and Kane County DUI Task Force.

He has been a police chief for five years.

He started his career in 1979 as a commander in the Aurora Police Department.

Despite stern letter, Schmitz supports Prairie State

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Despite its strong wording, a letter from State Rep. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia, asking Attorney General Lisa Madigan to investigate Prairie State Energy Campus, the lawmaker said he supports the downstate energy campus.

“The basis for the letter ... was the $300 million in bond money from the state for the project,” Schmitz said. “I don’t care how much anyone else spent.”

Schmitz said the letter reflects his concern regarding cost overruns on the $5 billion project and the impact on participating communities that might have to pass the cost along to ratepayers.

Schmitz said he did not expect a response unless an investigation resulted in charges being brought.

Schmitz’s Feb. 28 two-page letter, detailing the ills of the coal-fired power plant near

downstate Marissa, included costs that went $1 billion over estimates, its poor generating capacity and a Securities and Exchange Commission probe.

Geneva is a member of – and has a contract with – Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency for an entitlement share of 35 megawatts in Prairie State Generating Company, which owns Prairie State Energy Cam Rep. Tim pus.

Schmitz Batavia also is a member of the Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency and is in a long-term contract to purchase electricity from Prairie State.

The plant was developed

by Peabody Energy and serves 30 member communities in several states.

“I hope it thrives and starts cranking out power so the rates go down,” Schmitz said. “It is a project I supported in legislature. It’s the largest clean coal plant built in the U.S., and I hope it does everything its supposed to do.”

Schmitz said he has heard from constituents who want the coal plant shut down.

“I don’t want the plant shut down,” Schmitz said. “I want it to be at peak efficiency and doing what it’s supposed to do. ... I want to know why did it go $1 billion over cost. Who answers for that $1 billion?”

“We have no evidence to believe we were duped,” Burns said.

Burns said he and Batavia city officials met with Schmitz and State Rep. Mike Fortner, R-West Chicago, about Prairie State, and both are in favor of the project.

Fortner said his concern is for ratepayers in Batavia and Geneva, and he wants an external audit.

“I support the project. I have concerns about the cost overruns,” Fortner said.

A decision to have an external audit would have to be decided by NIMPA and the Illinois Municipal Electric Association, of which

St. Charles and Naperville are members, Fortner said.

Though they have public members, they are private entities, he said.

Burns said wind and solar would cost more right now, and the city’s investment in the coal-fired plant provides a stable, affordable power source until alternatives are more readily available.

Burns said Geneva’s electric utility gets 50 percent of its energy from Prairie State, 10 percent from contracts with Settlers Hill Landfill and more than 30 percent from NextEra Energy, which produces power from solar and wind sources, according to its website, www.nexteraenergy.com.

Resident Bill Scown said Geneva ratepayers will pay $7 million more a year for electricity from Prairie State.

“The cost of wind power is very reasonable right now,” Scown said. “There is no reality behind the mayor’s statement.”

Those who fought on D-Day deserve our gratitude Seventy years ago, men sat in boats or planes and headed toward a beach in Normandy.

What courage it must have taken that day for those men. They knew what likely awaited them – and they moved forward anyway, because they knew no action would result in something far worse for the world, and sacrifice was required to achieve the desired result.

June 6, 1944, is known as D-Day. It’s the day thousands of Allied Forces members stormed into Europe with the aim of wresting control away from Adolf Hitler and the Axis powers. Imagine what the world might be like if they didn’t have the courage to at least try.

The war didn’t end that day – it took until 1945 for that. But the foothold those brave men gained that day led to the eventual surrender of Axis powers.

For the first time in a long time during World War II, the day was a beacon of hope.

And the cost for that hope, like in all wars, was great.

D-Day included more than 5,000 ships, 11,000 airplanes and more than 150,000 service men, according to the website for the National D-Day Memorial.

“After years of meticulous planning and seemingly endless training, for the Allied Forces, it all came down to this: The boat ramp goes down, then jump, swim, run, and crawl to the cliffs,” the history portion of that website reads. “Many of the first young men (most not yet 20 years old) entered the surf carrying eighty pounds of equipment. They faced over 200 yards of beach before reaching the first natural feature offering any protection. Blanketed by small-arms fire and bracketed by artillery, they found themselves in hell.”

When it was over, there were nearly 10,000 Allied Forces casualties, with more than 4,000 confirmed dead, according to the D-Day Memorial website.

“Yet somehow, due to planning and preparation, and due to the valor, fidelity, and sacrifice of the Allied Forces, Fortress Europe had been breached.”

These people were part of the Greatest Generation, a term coined by journalist Tom Brokaw in a book of the same name. He wrote that this group of people was “the greatest generation any society has ever produced” and argued they fought because it was “the right thing to do.”

In a world where we get frustrated by a slow Internet connection, and where putting the needs of others before our own isn’t prized, their enduring legacy is a lesson we all could be reminded of.

Many of those who were part of D-Day, or World War II in general, are no longer with us. But despite their passing, what they did, what they put on the line and gave up, cannot be forgotten.

Famed war correspondent Ernie Pyle surveyed the carnage on the day after the invasion and wrote eloquently of the scene “so that you can know and appreciate and forever be humbly grateful to those both dead and alive who did it for you.”

They deserve our gratitude, still, now and forever.

Peck Farm Park’s playground has it all Playgrounds are not just for getting dirty any more. They’re for getting wet, getting musical, and getting back to nature.

Just ask the kids playing at Peck Farm’s new playground in Geneva, something I did while waiting for my wife to walk around the park.

“I love it,” Avery Davies told me one sunny spring afternoon, then picked up a drumstick and beat out a tune on strung-together wooden blocks.

“We’re from Bloomingdale,” Tina, her mother, said, “here for a soccer game,” which explains Avery’s blue jersey. “Did you see the finches?”

In a pair of long-needle pine trees, a goldfinch choir sings, several yellow orbs ornamenting emerald branches.

In another area, one girl works an old-fashioned, long-handled water pump while another girl holds a blue plastic bucket beneath the spout. They carry the water to what resembles a wooden 19th century bathtub, pour in their cargo, and return.

“We live in Elburn,” said Suzanne Breedlove. “Allison, in green, is my daughter; Lauren is her cousin. I told them they couldn’t get wet.”

“Good luck with that,” I chuckled, then told the girls, “You’re really good at getting water.”

“Thank you,” they replied,

The water covered a layer of dirt, then was stirred with sticks that turn into paintbrushes dripping with brown paint with which they started their masterpiece of lines, circles and curlicues.

“There is a tremendous amount of activity in a very small space,” wrote the project manager at Hitchcock Design Group, Eric F. Hornig, when I emailed questions about Hawks Hollow Nature Playground.

“There are obvious play activities like the slide, climbers and stream, but we encourage visitors to look deeper at the multiple layers of detailing ... lessons about soil, footprints, insects, birds, history and much more.”

Asked how designers incorporated the surrounding area, Hornig replied, “We modeled our bird theme after species present in an Illinois prairie, used native plants to merge the two landscapes and took advantage of the breathtaking

views with the Raptors Roost and Hawks Nest.”

Hornig’s favorite part of the playground is the “Falconer’s Message Center, a pulley and basket that encourages children to hoist walnuts, acorns and other seeds up to the top deck.

Once there and met by another person, they can be placed inside an open runnel system that rolls them back down into a barrel, where they can be sent up again.

It promotes good communication, cooperation and smiles.”

Finally, Hornig lauded “the Geneva Park District and their volunteers. [They] installed all the plants, and volunteers helped build the nests and beaver lodge. The log benches and other items were hand crafted by their staff. Something they should take great pride in.”

I see my wife sitting on one of those benches. Leaving the playground, I wish I were 10 again.

GENEVA – Since 1976, Geneva resident Richard Peck has worked behind the scenes to ensure that Swedish Days and other community events have the proper sound systems.

Peck will be in the spotlight at this month’s Swedish Days as he has been named Swedish Days parade marshal.

The parade will step off at 1 p.m. June 22 and is the culmination of this year’s Swedish Days, set to begin on June 17.

Peck, who owns R/J Recording and Sound in Geneva, said he has humbly accepted the honor.

“I was very surprised when I found out,” Peck said.

“I never thought I would be asked. I still feel there are other people more worthy of this.”

In 1976, Peck recorded the Geneva High School Jazz Band during a concert at

Central Stage on South Third Street during Swedish Days.

He continues to provide the sound systems for the festival and other events throughout the year in Geneva, such as Festival of the Vine, the Christmas Walk and Geneva High School’s graduation ceremonies.

“I was never looking for any recognition for what I do,” Peck said.

He has provided sound for the “Geneva’s Got Talent” contest Richard Peck h e l d d u r i n g Swedish Days for the past three years.

“I feel the young entertainers should have the same quality sound and attention expected by the major performing artists,” Peck said.

Laura Rush, communications coordinator for the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, which puts on Swedish Days, said the chamber very much appreciates Peck’s efforts.

“He knows what to set up,” Rush said. “It’s flawless.

It’s one less thing we have to worry about. He really cares about the festivals and cares about Geneva.”

For the 25th year, Foltos, who owns Foltos Tonsorial Parlor in downtown Batavia, will cut hair and donate the proceeds to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana as part of Chop Around the Clock.

After 25 years, Foltos said he still enjoys putting on the event.

“You know it is the right thing to do,” Foltos said.

Last year, the event raised $12,000, and this year, he hopes to raise $25,000 in honor of it being the 25th year of the event.

The festival will participate in the Kansas City Barbeque Society’s 100KCBS Meals Mission by collecting food contributions for the hungry. Firin’ Up the Fox will be July 11 to 13 at the former St. Charles mall property near Route 38 and Randall Road.

The mission’s goal is help feed the homeless and hun-

gry throughout the U.S. with 100,000 meals over the next 12 months. Festival attendees can bring nonperishable food items to donate to the mission.

Teams competing at the festival will cook an extra pork butt, provided by the society from event sponsor Blue Goose Market in St. Charles, according to the release. The pork butts and donated food items will be distributed to local charities, including the Lazarus House in St. Charles.

“By the very nature of our size and collection of food enthusiasts, we have an obvious opportunity to make a difference in America’s hunger cri-

sis,” said Carolyn Wells, the society’s executive director, according to the release.

The society by April 30, 2015, expects to donate more than 3,200 pork butts, or the equivalent of 100,000 meals, to the mission, the release stated.

The Kansas City Barbeque Society is the largest organization of BBQ enthusiasts in the world, with almost 20,000 members and more than 425 sanctioned BBQ events in its network, including Firin’ Up the Fox. For information regarding the event, visit www.firinupthefox.com or call 630-2334746.

elli Santo Paulo and Sophie Jendrzeczyk might not be along for the ride with the St. Charles East girls soccer team this spring if their club program, Eclipse, had advanced as far as it did the year before.

Blessing in disguise?

“I think it is because now we’re going to state,” Santo Paulo said. “It’s so worth it. And I love playing with this team. I love all the girls on it.”

Santo Paulo and Jendrzeczyk are among four Saints starters who returned to high school soccer this spring after going on hiatus to focus on club play, with fellow junior Mallory Mollenhauer and senior Rion Gaffney being the others. That quartet played a significant role in elevating the Saints (18-4-5) to today’s IHSA Class 3A state semifinal matchup against Lincoln-Way North at North Central College in Naperville.

All four had played high school soccer at East as freshmen before stepping away.

East coach Paul Jennison knew their returns meant an influx of talent but was impressed by how well they meshed with a Saints core that includes returning stalwarts such as Amanda Hilton, Anna Corirossi, Shannon Rasmussen, Darcy Cunningham and Kendra Sheehan from last year’s 14-6-2 team.

“From Day 1, everyone was in tune,” Jennison said. “Coming back in when they’ve played club the year before, you’re hoping it was going to be a smooth transition, and it was. They’ve been amazing, and to bring four players of that quality back into the fold, I mean, you only have to look at the season we’ve had.

“But also the fact that the other girls around them have understood roles … no egos, no superstars. They’ve just gone in there and worked for each other.”

Mollenhauer was called up to varsity

late in her freshman season before devoting her sophomore year to club play with Team Chicago. A Wisconsin-Milwaukee recruit, Mollenhauer’s decision to return helped fortify an East defense that entered the season light on experience but has excelled.

“Now I’m committed [for college] and I’m so much happier that I’m here,” Mollenhauer said. “I’m so glad to be part of the Saints soccer team. We are doing amazing things this year, and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”

Santo Paulo has chipped in five goals and five assists while lending depth to the Saints’ midfield, arguably the team’s chief strongsuit. She assisted on East’s second goal Tuesday as the Saints beat Huntley, 2-0, in the Lake Park Supersectional.

Santo Paulo acknowledged mixed feelings about missing out on her sophomore year with her East teammates.

Nutof, Storm have North’s number

On Thursday, the inability to produce a crooked number against South Elgin senior right-hander Ryan Nutof kept the North Stars from contending for more hardware.

Senior center fielder Nick Drawant scored the team’s lone run with one out in the seventh inning, bringing North within the final frustrating margin in a 9-1 loss to the Storm in a Class 4A Schaumburg Sectional semifinal.

“Just let us get some life in the team, you know,” Drawant said. “We weren’t going to back down. We were pushing the whole game. It just didn’t

go how we wanted to.”

Drawant crossed the plate at the end of a wild play, as an errant throw from the outfield followed shortstop Zach Mettetal’s single to center, the last of four North hits.

The run marked the first South Elgin (23-10) has allowed this postseason. The Storm thumped Wheaton North and Hoffman Estates in run-rule victories during regionals.

“It was unearned for Ryan,” South Elgin second baseman Jared Kramer said.

“Kind of wish it would have been a shutout, but it was a good game anyway.”

A Michigan recruit who’s likely to be selected in this weekend’s Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, Nutof supported himself with the only offense he needed.

“First four innings or so, the curveball was a little spotty and I couldn’t really find it that much, but my fastball was working all day, and in the later innings I found my curveball and started to trick some hitters,” Nutof said. “It started working real nicely.”

Junior right-hander Sam Hubbe kept North afloat with 4⅔ innings of solid relief after replacing Farry, allowing one run, four hits, two walks with four strikeouts.

“Frank had a great season for us. He’s a big reason why we’re here, and Sam will be a big reason why we’ll hopefully be back here next year,” Genke said. “We have a lot of young kids on this team, and they got really valuable experience today, and they know now what if feels like to get to his point in the season and

lose a game.

“So it’s invaluable, and I look forward to getting right back after it next week during summer ball and getting our mind focused back on getting to this point next year.”

South Elgin advanced to Saturday’s sectional championship game against top-seeded Batavia, which beat the Storm, 6-0, in April behind Colby Green’s no-hitter.

North, which won the program’s first regional since 2010, hoped for another crack at the Bulldogs, too, but was unable to keep pace with South Elgin. Cory Wright (double), Drawant (double) and Anthony Lambert collected North’s other hits.

“It was a great group. This is one of the funnest years I’ve ever played baseball. Senior year, you know,” Drawant said. “Didn’t end up like we wanted, but we still got a number on that press box.”

Geneva athletic director Jim Kafer confirmed Thursday to the Chronicle that Johnsen will not be back as coach in 2014.

Assistant AnK.C. Johnsen nie Seitelman, part of Geneva District 304’s physical education faculty and a former collegiate player at Indiana, takes over for the longtime Vikings’ staple.

“We appreciate all of KC’s contributions to the program but are equally excited to have a faculty member with Annie’s credentials taking over,” Kafer wrote in a text message.

Reached briefly at his home Thursday, Johnsen replied “I don’t think so,” when asked if he would return as boys volleyball coach.

Optimism for future postseason successes swirled as Geneva welcomed standout freshmen Ally Barrett and Grace Loberg to the mix.

Johnsen has coached the Geneva boys since the program’s 2011 inception.

Seitelman, a product of downstate Freeburg High School, was a middle blocker at Indiana. Her career highlights included a September 2006 nod as Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. She also was an All-Big Ten Sportsmanship honoree in 2006, her junior season.

A first-year Geneva faculty member, Seitelman worked with the Kane County Juniors club program in 2013, per a Nike volleyball camp website.

Johnsen’s wife, Phyllis, serves as the Juniors’ club director.

Seitelman, also Geneva’s sophomore coach last season, is the wife of Aurora University women’s volleyball coach James Seitelman.

Attempts to reach Kafer and K.C. Johnsen for further comment were not successful.

Maisto, who went 384-115 in two stints as head coach, informed the girls of his decision to step down after the 8-7, eight-inning loss to Sterling in a Class 3A Marengo Sectional semifinal.

“I didn’t want any distractions, didn’t want anything mentioned of it, so I had known, but I didn’t want the girls to really know anything

about it, so when the game was over we wished our best to the seniors and thanked them and I also told the girls it was my last game, too,” Maisto said. “It’s one of those things, I don’t know what the reaction was because they were still disappointed over a heartbreaking game, losing in eight innings ... but a couple girls said real nice things, which was real nice to hear.”

Maisto stepped down for the first time as head coach in 1998 after 15 years running the program. He later spent five years as an assistant at Central under Scot Sutherland before guiding the Rockets to 50 wins the past two seasons as head coach, including a conference championship last year and a regional title this year.

The Cubs got the kind of left-handed power hitter the organization lacks when they selected catcher/first baseman Indiana University’s Kyle Schwarber with the No. 4 overall pick in Thursday night’s first round of the Major League Baseball FirstYear Player Draft.

At least as important, they got him for the right price.

Once the consensus top three pitchers in the draft went off the board with the top three picks – including the Cubs’ top-rated player, left-hander Brady Aiken – the

“Erica will not be a candidate for the varsity position, that much we know for sure,” Maisto said. “What her involvement will be, that has not been determined, but she is not going to be an applicant for the head spot.”

Wade Maisto said no longer teaching at Central as he once did made him feel less connected to the program. He said he’s unsure whether he’ll coach again in the future but still considers softball “a great game. Once it gets in your system, it’s in your system.”

Leaving his alma mater initially was Jahns’ plan a year earlier, but he returned after apparent successor Jeremy Kenny elected to take a position in Plano District 88.

Orosco applied for the opening in December, interviewed in April and quickly ascended a top the list of approximately 20 candidates.

Although he is not a faculty member, Orosco has a son, Nathan, who is an incoming eighth-grader at Harter Middle School, and coached many of Kaneland’s freshmen-to-be with the Kaneland Knights Wrestling Club.

“The thing that really stood out was just how he was focused on the kids have to have their educations before anything,” incoming Kaneland athletic director Peter Goff said. “Wrestling

Orosco’s dayside schedule allows him to be available for afternoon workouts and evening duals, and also gives him Fridays and Saturdays off.

He already has signed the team up for a four-day camp at the Wisconsin Dells’ Chula Vista Resort later this month.

“It’s going to be a good glimpse of what to expect,” Orosco said, “and I’m hoping these guys are ready and prepared.”

Addressing his plans for the program after his recent approval by Kaneland District 302, Orosco used rhetoric that might jolt a crop of new cadets as well as a mat room full of Knights.

“My big thing is preparation,” Orosco said. “Preparation as a coach is going to help me with their preparation as wrestlers. As long as I’ve got my ducks in a row, I think we can get them prepared for hitting that next level and beyond.”

Kaneland restored some prominence to the program under former Knight Monty Jahns, who retired – for good – at the end of the 2013-14 school year.

Jendrzeczyk, a forward, has emerged as East’s third-leading goal scorer as her nine goals trail only Hilton (16) and Cunningham (15).

She said returning to high school soccer offers a more comfortable dynamic than when she played club yearround.

“My club team, we play really, really aggressively,” Jendrzeczyk said. “This team is nice. We get along really well, playing the ball to each

other. It’s easier to play with this team because we just have more chemistry, I guess.”

Gaffney (eight goals, two assists) also has developed into a valuable scoring option for the Saints. An Elmhurst College recruit, Gaffney played high school soccer as a freshman, was injured as a sophomore and focused on club play with Oak Brook Soccer Club as a junior.

Regardless of backgrounds, Jennison figures he’ll need all of the Saints to be at their best if they’re going to get past Lincoln-Way North (22-3-1) and earn a spot in Saturday night’s championship match.

“We’re under no illusions,” Jennison said. “This is going to be without doubt the toughest team we’ve faced all season.”

“We expect this to be a very quick process and getting him out and playing in the organization. And there’s a good chance we’ll get to spend some [saved] money elsewhere.”

As many know, the museum and collection was moved from a longtime

Our family album has many photographs of Harold Arteberry in his Texaco uniform, driving an oil delivery truck for the station’s original owner, Charles McCornack.

It was a steamy Friday night in early June, 1952, at the graduation ceremony for the Haines Junior High School, the only gateway to the only high school. The Haines building, an imposing yet decaying red fortress, was finally destroyed and the high school building on West Main Street – now George Thompson (think shoulder crunch) – was wiped off the high school map.

Zoom in on the stage (also doubled for a basketball court) with all the girls wearing hand-made pastel dresses (same pattern as directed by Miss Finske). No air conditioning and an audience of let’s-get-this-over-with parents.

Three graduates went up to the microphone. Each had been assigned to memorize and deliver a long portion of the already-on-file “History of St. Charles Illinois.” The notorious and unyielding pair, Munhall and Finske were not only autocratic, they were scary.

So, we accepted the mandate.

So, Marlene Goetze Black, yours truly and a third, who goes unrecognized since I cannot remember his name, managed to make the pride of the fox totally boring, physically uncomfortable and had no role whatsoever in stimulating others to pursue that history and contribute to the cause with cash, artifacts and participation.

Thank the Lord for what the Historical Society does for all of us, and for erasing the Haines incident from recorded history.

Mitsubishi’s 2014 Mirage can be described in several ways but all of them add up to this. The hatchback is small, economical and devoid of pretension.

With a three cylinder engine and driven sensibly, this lightweight can average 40 miles per gallon on regular gasoline. Perhaps there is no other way to drive this frontwheel-drive, five-passenger econocar except sensibly.

The cylinders in the 1.2-liter, 12-valve engine pump out a mere 74 horsepower, but that is sufficient for this 1,996-pounder to scoot with energy through city streets or along major highways. It will take more than 11 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour.

During a test week, fuel usage averaged 41.2 miles per gallon in combined city and interstate driving. The engine was mated to a continuously variable transmission, an upgrade costing $1,000 more than the standard five-speed manual transmission. The tested fuel usage is notable as the Mirage is neither a hybrid, electric or diesel-powered vehicle. It runs on regular gasoline.

These small vehicles, and many major auto manufacturers have one for sale, fulfill their purpose of providing a dependable ride with a minimum of fuel usage. Several reports are of the Mirage averaging 47 and 48 miles per gallon of fuel usage.

These vehicles also are practical or, at least, the Mirage is. The Mirage liftgate opens to 17.2 cubic feet of cargo space. With the split (60-40) rear seats lowered, that space expands to 47 cubic feet. This compares well with pricier wagons, hatchbacks or sport utility vehicles.

One silly comparison, for example, could be made with the $42,500 BMW 328D Series wagon, which has 53 cubic feet of storage when the rear split seats are flattened, and 13 cubic feet when those seats are upright.

Mitsubishi’s 2014 Mirage subcompact hatchback has a 1.2-liter, 74-horsepower, three-cylinder engine mated to either a five-speed manual or continuously variable transmission.

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper The ES had a cardboard cargo cover, which can be removed easily for storage purposes.

But you pay for what you get and, with the Mirage, it is a small powerplant with few frills. The two 2014 models are the $12,995 DE and $14,195 ES. By replacing the manual transmission with a CVT, prices are $13,995 and $15,195 respectively.

Mechanicals are the same for DE and ES and differences are minor. The ES has fog lights, for example, and the 14inch steel wheels are replaced with alloy wheels. The tires remain P165s, which is to say small, but there is not much

vehicle body weight to support so they work.

The ES also adds keyless ignition, Bluetooth telephone connectivity and leather wrapping the steering wheel and shift knob. Interior metallic accents are part of the ES decor and not the DE. Seats are patterned cloth, power is provided for exterior mirrors, windows and door locks, a 140-watt sound system is onboard and it has four speakers for AM-FM radio, compact disc and MP3 players and a USB auxiliary port.

The two models share niceties such as automatic air conditioning, cruise control, rear spoiler, split-folding high-back rear seat, ECO status indicator to show fuel economy, high mount rear stop light, lower side air dam, variable intermittent wipers for windshield and rear window and rear

window defroster.

On the exterior, front and rear bumpers, door handles and tailgate handle are keyed to match the exterior color of the car.

Shared safety features are disc brakes in front, drums in the rear, an antilock braking system, traction and stability controls, seven air bags (front, driver’s knee, front sides and overhead), and a tire pressure monitoring system. The media tested Mirage has braked to 0 from 60 mph in a distance of 121 feet. Not bad.

Seats are flat and firm and road imperfections will be felt.

The suspension system relies on struts in front and a torsion beam in the rear.

Leg room is a question mark. This six-footer was not comfortable with the legroom in front, which officially measures 41.7 inches. In the rear,

leg room is at a premium and depends on how far back the front seats are tracked. Long motoring trips are not advised.

Mirage is not a glamorous car but the fuel economy speaks for itself. The warranty might compensate for trim deficiencies such as hard plastics for dashboard and inside panels. The warranty is five years or 60,000 miles with roadside assistance, and 10 years or 100,000 miles on the powertrain.

Competition, to name several, includes Chevrolet Spark, Ford Fiesta, Toyota Yaris and Nissan Versa.

Since they are small and light, they must be driven carefully on roadways featuring heavier traffic and vehicles. In other words, be alert when behind the wheel of a Mirage or one of its competitors.

‘Words and Pictures’: Actors freshen up stale story

By STEPHANIE MERRY The Washington Post The roles of Jack Marcus and Dina Delsanto don’t require the heavy lifting of Academy-Award-nominated actors.

The stock characters at the center of the romantic dramedy “Words and Pictures” are an alcoholic writer and a painter with an artist’s standoffish temperament, respectively. Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche have done similar, better-written parts before (see “Hemingway & Gellhorn” and “The Lovers on the Bridge” for proof), and they could probably sleepwalk their way to a paycheck here.

But to their credit – and to the movie’s great benefit – they don’t. Binoche even created the paintings herself in the film. And the two conjure a charming trifle out of an over-long story that often teeters on trite.

Owen’s Jack has been teaching at a Northeastern prep school for years by the time Dina takes a job there. He’s a good teacher, but he isn’t big on rules, which is a forgivable offense for a celebrated author. But with alcoholism interfering with his productivity, he

finds his job in jeopardy. Dina has troubles, too, though hers aren’t self-inflicted. She is ostensibly taking a sabbatical from her high-profile Manhattan career, but the truth shows in the cane she uses to get around: She can barely hold a brush since her diagnosis of debilitating rheumatoid arthritis.

As soon as the pair meet in the teacher’s lounge, where Jack tries to engage Dina in a word game that his colleagues have grown weary of, the chemistry is clear. But the sparks aren’t just romantic. The teachers begin to inspire each other creatively, too, especially after Jack manufactures a war between visual art and literary craft that the entire school becomes invested in.

Aspects of “Words and Pictures” feel like they’re from another era, whether it’s the “His Girl Friday”-style repartee or the overly sentimental music that pops up between scenes. Veteran director Fred Schepisi still uses some of the methods he did when helming “Roxanne” (1987) and “I.Q.,” (1994), and his take on filmmaking, not to mention romance, doesn’t always feel fresh. Of course, the baby-boomer audience for

this movie may not mind the throwback vibe, especially amid summer releases that are comparatively dumbed down.

Besides, none of the movie’s faults can undo the power of Binoche and Owen. Their interactions look so naturalistic that they seem unscripted.

And while both characters have hard edges, the actors balance the flaws with charisma and an infectious passion for their respective art forms. Even when Jack commits what many would consider to be the greatest of literary sins, Owen manages to make him sympathetic; and even after Dina basically dares her students, co-workers and even her sister not to like her, her redeeming qualities are never obscured.

The plot may meander into some unnecessary diversions, but the actors remain invested. And if they believe it, pros that they are, why shouldn’t we?

• “Words and Pictures” received three out of four stars and is rated PG13 for sexual material, including nude sketches, strong language and some mature thematic material. The film runs 111 minutes.

Vaccine reduces shingles risk in adults over 60 years old Dear Doctor K: I have never had chickenpox. Do I still need to get a shingles vaccine?

Dear Reader: Not everyone knows the connection between chickenpox (a childhood disease) and shingles (a condition that usually hits adults). So let’s begin with that.

Chickenpox and shingles are both caused by the same virus: varicella-zoster virus (VZV).

Once you have had chickenpox, VZV remains in your body’s nerve tissues for the rest of your life, alive but inactive. But it can be reactivated later in life, causing shingles.

Not long ago, nearly every kid got chickenpox. (I was an exception; my sister got it, but I didn’t.) Today, fewer kids get it, thanks to the varicella vaccine (Varivax), which was approved in 1995. Shingles is also on the decline, thanks to the Zostavax vaccine, which was approved for older adults in 2006.

After you are first infected with the virus, it takes up permanent residence in your nerves.

Specifically, it finds its way to the knots of nerve cells on each side of your spinal cord, called the dorsal root ganglia. The nerve fibers that sense pain in your skin lead to these ganglia.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff When the virus reactivates (or “reawakens”) in the dorsal root ganglia, it travels down the nerves that lead to the skin. This causes a burning or tingling sensation or a shooting pain. Your skin may be extremely sensitive -- so much so that you cannot stand clothing touching or rubbing the area.

After a few days, the virus reaches the skin. Painful, itchy blisters may cluster in patches, or form a continuous line that roughly follows the path of the infected nerve. That’s the usual pattern of shingles: first a few days of the unpleasant sensation, then the rash.

About 10 percent of adults who get shingles experience post-herpetic neuralgia. This is long-term pain in the area of skin where blisters occurred, even after the rash has healed completely. This condition may last for months or even years.

So, to your question: Since you never had chickenpox, should you get the shingles vaccine? Yes. There are several reasons. First, not everyone who becomes in-

fected with VZV gets chickenpox.

You may have been infected, and thus may be at risk for shingles.

The vaccine reduces your risk of developing shingles by about 50 percent if you are 60 or older.

(There is some controversy as to whether the vaccine is as effective in people aged 50-59.) The vaccine also reduces the intensity and duration of symptoms in people who do get shingles despite having received the vaccine.

Although you only asked about the shingles vaccine, there’s another vaccine you should discuss with your doctor.

Even though I said that you could have been infected with VZV and not developed chickenpox, it also is possible that you really never have been infected with VZV. A simple blood test can tell you whether you have VZV in your body. If not, you are at risk for getting chickenpox as an adult, which can be a serious illness. You should talk to your doctor about getting the vaccine to protect you against chickenpox.

Teen sexually harassed by 40-year-old boss Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and work on Friday evening and all day Saturday at a nationally well-known fast-food restaurant. I rather enjoy the work, and I love earning the money.

My only problem is my manager who happens to be about 40 years old. He is married, and he is a father of two children, but that doesn’t stop him from making suggestive sexual remarks to me all the time.

Another girl who works with me said that I could have him arrested for sexual harassment. I don’t want him arrested – I just want him to behave himself like a gentleman, not a 40-year-old jerk!

The next time he makes suggestive remarks, I’m going to tell him that if he continues his unacceptable behavior that I will contact his wife and tell her about her husband’s conduct with me. I want to handle this problem by myself.

If I tell my parents, I would be forced to quit, and I want to continue working here. Also, my dad is a “hot-head” and probably would take matters into his own hands and beat him up.

Dear Nameless: Sexual harassment can be either obvious or subtle. It includes unasked for and unwelcome sexual attention, remarks, noises, stares and touches. It can also involve unwanted requests or demands

Sexual harassment is never right, and in many cases, it’s against the law. A victim of sexual harassment has the right to take action and must never feel guilty or ashamed. The main thing to do is to get it out in the open right away and talk to someone who can help do something about it.

It could be more effective if you contacted the owner of the restaurant or the corporate office.

Dr. Wallace: We were having a heated discussion in our health class about teens and smoking. The teacher asked the class this question: “Who smokes more, teenage girls or teenage boys? Naturally, the boys said that girls smoke more, and the girls thought more boys smoked than girls. Can you settle the debate? – Andy, Rochester, N.Y. Dear Andy: According to the American Cancer Society, 10 percent of all young people ages 12 to 17 smoke cigarettes.

Girls (11.6 percent) had a higher percentage of smokers than boys (9.3 percent).

The good news is that the percentage of young smokers has decreased every year for the past 12 years.

That is usually true at the bridge table, but sometimes you can control your opponent by leaving him with no winning option -- as in this deal.

South is in seven spades. West leads the club ace. South ruffs and cashes the spade ace, expecting to claim one nanosecond later.

But when East discards a club, suddenly West seems to have a certain trump trick. Is there any chance?

North’s rebid was a double negative, showing a very bad hand, either the traditional two no-trump or the modern three clubs, according to partnership preference. Then South, confident that North could not have an ace, jumped to seven hearts to offer a choice of grand slams. North gave preference to spades, never having expected to make three bids in the auction.

The only way to bring home the contract is to lead side-suit winners through West. When he ruffs one, dummy overruffs, and declarer draws trumps, then having the same number of spades (three) as West.

However, West will only ruff if he has no alternative. He will discard as often as possible. Here, if South immediately runs his hearts, West will pitch his diamond and later ruff the diamond ace.

As declarer can throw only four of dummy’s five diamonds on the hearts, he must cash one diamond trick first. Then he plays his hearts. Eventually, West will concede.
