BATAVIA – This year marks the 26th year Foltos’ Tonsorial Parlor at 7 E. Wilson St., Batavia, has produced the Chop Around the Clock event. The event will be from 4 p.m. today to 4 p.m. Saturday. Proceeds will be donated to Ronald McDonald’s Children’s Charities.

This 24-hour fun-filled event will include music, dancing, a bake sale, raffles, balloon

Even now as an adult, I’m in the pool a few times a week, swimming my laps.

Needless to say, I believe swimming is a lifelong skill, and swimming safety is a necessity

in anyone’s life.

That’s why I was really excited to photograph swim lessons last week at Goldfish Swim School in St. Charles. The lessons being taught have changed since I started swimming several decades ago, but the fundamentals are exactly the same.

GENEVA – Shea Villwock wants to give identity to artists and those who support the arts.

The Geneva resident is the founder and CEO of the website Artist View, www.artistview.com, which is hosting a new Kickstarter campaign, “Artist View T-Shirts: Creating A Physical Artist Community.”

“The idea behind the T-shirts was to give artists an identity,” Villwock said. “We wanted to showcase who they were.”

And even if you are not an artist, you can wear a T-shirt that says “i.support.Music” or “i.support.Film.”

The Kickstarter campaign is an outgrowth of the website, www.artistview. com, which launched in 2014.

Villwock said for years, he was physically connecting different groups of people to each other. He thought it would be easier to connect them online on one website.

“When I was recording bands, I’d have filmmakers come in to do audio posts,” Villwock said. “I’d have

bands asking for photographers to shoot their bands and then promoters to promote their bands. So it was like this whole group of different types of artists. And I just got to thinking, ‘Why wouldn’t we just put this into one place?’ ” The T-shirts are a physical

Hundreds expected to participate in Mid-American Canoe and Kayak Race

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com More than 500 people are expected to participate in Sunday’s Mid-American Canoe and Kayak Race on the Fox River.

As of Thursday, 500 people have registered for the race, now in its 54th year. People also can register Sunday for the race.

Typically, 30 to 50 people register on the day of the race, said Jeff Long, public relations manager for the Fox Valley Park District, which sponsors the race. Long said while the race is competitive,

it also is meant to be fun.

“We’re in the business of recreation, and that’s kind of what we are promoting here,” Long said. “We look at the river as a recreational resource.”

Two race lengths will be featured – a 10-mile race from St. Charles and a 6-mile race from Batavia – both finishing at McCullough Park in Aurora. Long said the two race lengths allow for paddlers of all abilities to participate.

The St. Charles leg of the race begins at 9 a.m., from Mount St. Mary Park on Route 31, and the Batavia portion starts at 10:30 a.m. from the VFW at 645 S. River St. in

Batavia, just south of downtown. Boats will be launched in heats of 10 every four minutes from both start areas.

Free shuttle buses for participants and spectators will run continuously along the route beginning at 7 a.m.

When the race ends, the action will continue with an outdoor party and awards ceremony at the finish area in McCullough Park at 150 W. Illinois Ave., Aurora. Each registered racer will receive a commemorative race T-shirt and goody bag after the race.

Campton Hills Kiwanis is village’s first service organization

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – The Campton Hills Kiwanis Club on Thursday conducted what could be its largest fundraiser yet.

The club had more than 250 pre-orders for its Fay’s barbecue fundraiser and on Thursday, Kiwanis members had the dinner orders ready for pickup outside the Old Second National Bank in Wasco.

This was the first time the club has held a Fay’s fundraiser – the business was chosen for its good name recognition and reputation, Campton Hills Kiwanis President Carl Zeigler said.

The 16-member group won’t know exactly how much it raised until next week, but before the barbecue the group had already donated $3,250 so far this year, Zeigler said.

“It’s a small group with a relatively high impact,” he said.

The Campton Hills Kiwanis is the newest of seven Fox Valley-area Kiwanis clubs and was chartered on March 12, 2012, thanks to the efforts of Zeigler. He has been a Kiwanis member for 25 years and was previously affiliated with a Kiwanis club in Elgin when he taught at Elgin Community College.

Zeigler said he noticed there were no service clubs in the village of Campton Hills when he moved there, so he thought it would be worth the time and effort to start a nonprofit community organization locally.

In 2011, Zeigler walked door-to-door along Campton Crossings Drive and other areas in the hopes of recruiting members for the organization.

One of the people he spoke to was Dr. Andrea Adam at her dental practice at 40W320 LaFox Road, St. Charles.

Adam said she always looked favorably at Kiwanis organizations and decided to become one of the group’s

first two years, Zeigler said.

With more than $3,200 already donated in 2015, Zeigler is hopeful the club’s impact will continue to grow.

Proceeds from the barbecue fundraiser will benefit Campton Township Parks and Open Space, Zeigler said.

Some Campton Hills Kiwanis members plan to do some volunteer gardening in the parks later this year. Lisa Mertz, program manager of the Campton Township Open Space program, said every donation and volunteer helps.

The township has about 900 acres of natural area and several native gardens, and Mertz said she is the primary staff person for all of it. A separate township staff maintains the ballfields, parking lots and parks, she said.

“They’ve been very generous,” Mertz said of the Campton Hills Kiwanis.

“This is the first craftbeer festival in St. Charles that I know of,” said Alessandro Vazquez of Brew Avenue Events, a company that specializes in craft-beer festivals. “My focus is going to be Illinois craft brewer-

ies. I’m really trying to find breweries that have been around for less than a year that people haven’t heard about, and I am going to bring them to the fest.”

General admission tickets, which will include 20 three-ounce samples and a souvenir tasting glass, will cost $45. VIP tickets, which will include early admission, access to specialty brews and a VIP area and complimentary food and snacks, cost $65. Designated driver tickets, which include soda and water, cost $15.

Additional court fees may come to Kane County GENEVA – People who come to use Kane County’s courts in the future likely will see an additional fee to the $25 they already pay for court security, officials said.

Two amended bills related to the fees passed the Illinois General Assembly late last month and are awaiting the governor’s signature.

The first would allow the Kane County Board to approve charging up to a $30 fee on certain court cases to construct buildings to consolidate Kane County judicial services.

The $30 fee will help fund a long-term plan to extend the Kane County Judicial Center on Route 38 in St. Charles Township to hold all of the county’s judicial services – the circuit clerk’s office, civil and criminal

cases.

Architects estimated the project could cost anywhere from $80 million to $100 million, so County Board members looked to find multiple revenue streams to fund it.

“What we saw last year was Will County asked Springfield to let them have a user fee ... for people who use the court system, not just taxpayers in general, so we wanted to be a part of that,” said County Board member Brian Pollock, D-Aurora, also co-chairman of the legislative committee.

Pollock said the fee would not be imposed right away, but it would give the county another option to move the project forward if it chooses to pass an ordinance. The fee will give the county money without raising property taxes, Pollock said.

The other amended bill would give the county an option to get more money for

court security.

The county imposes a $25 fee for people using the courthouse – that fee helps pay for services such as security guards, bailiffs and metal detectors.

Pollock said the county had a preliminary study that projected the county takes $600,000 to $900,000 from the general fund to pay for safety services each year.

With the bill, the county can use a cost study to determine the exact deficit and adjust the fee so court users would pay the difference.

“No one wants to raise fees … but which is fair? To target just the people who are using the system, or everyone who pays taxes?”

Pollock asked. “We figured if you’re going to have to do it, let’s focus on users rather than everyone.”

The fees wouldn’t apply to cases in which people don’t appear in court.

Officials said they want to get the fees approved by fall.

The legislative committee will hold a meeting at

10:30 a.m. June 17.

Committee members are scheduled to talk more about the possible fees at that time.

ST. CHARLES – Just as Festival of the Vine celebrates the wonders of wine, Brews on the Fox will celebrate the art of craft. In September, a bevy of breweries will venture to St. Charles for a craft-beer festival.

Brews on the Fox will be from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Sept.

19, in conjunction with the fourth annual “Firin’ Up the Fox” barbecue festival, running Sept. 18 through Sept.

20. Both events will be on the grounds of the former St. Charles Mall, located at the northeast corner of Randall Road and Route 38 in St. Charles.

Brew Avenue Events is producing the festival in partnership with Pride of the Fox, the group responsible for the St. Charles RiverFest.

The craft-beer portion of the festival will feature more than 60 different beers and ciders from roughly 30 local and regional breweries.

Geneva doctor’s $25K bond money continues to be held

and BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A Geneva doctor’s $25,000 bond on sexual assault charges will continue to be held, a judge ruled Thursday, despite a request by his attorneys to release it so they could be paid.

Attorneys for Mark Lewis, 55, of St. Charles, asked that his money be released since his bond was revoked after he was arrested on felony drug charges last month.

In an appearance before Kane County Judge John Barsanti, Lewis said $22,000 of the bail money posted was his own and $3,000 was paid by his family.

Lewis’ attorney Michael Krejci asked the judge to release the money since Lewis’ bond was revoked and he is being held at the Kane County Jail.

“This is his money,” Krej-

ci said.

Assistant State’s Attorney Greg Sams said statutes allow for the money to be forfeited because Lewis violated the terms of his bond when he was charged with another felony.

Mark Lewis However, Sams also cited a case, the People of Illinois vs. E.H. Jr., in which a man committed a misdemeanor after bonding out of a prior offense.

In that case, the court decided to hold the money until the end of the trial to be used to pay fines and other court fees.

“We are not necessarily asking for the bond to be forfeited but held to the end of the case,” Sams said. “If fines or costs are imposed at the end, you can use the bond from one file [case] for

the other file [case].”

Barsanti ordered the bond be held for the time being.

Lewis’ next court appearance is scheduled for June 24 where Barsanti said the issue will be revisited.

Lewis was arrested last July for an alleged sexual assault in November 2012 of a young woman he knew. He pleaded not guilty and posted bail.

Lewis was charged again last month with felony possession of marijuana with

intent to deliver, possession of marijuana, production of marijuana plants, possession of a firearm with a revoked firearm owner’s identification card, and misdemeanor possession of firearm ammunition without an ID card.

The North Central Narcotics Task Force found 199 marijuana plants, 11,772 grams of processed marijuana, a handgun and ammunition in his home, according to the charges.

Cleaning company faces suit in connection with STC fire

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A cleaning company is being sued in connection with an August 2014 fire at The Office Dining & Spirits at 201 E. Main St. in downtown St. Charles. The restaurant was closed for a little more than a month after the fire.

The Aug. 27 fire caused an

estimated $125,000 in damage to the structure and contents of The Office.

The Office’s insurance company, Allied Property and Casualty Insurance Co., in May filed a lawsuit against Romeoville-based A+ Exhaust Hood and Duct Company Inc., which had been hired to do exhaust hood cleaning, repair and maintenance. A hearing on the

The suit seeks almost $415,000 in damages, along with attorney fees.

According to the suit, the fire started at or near the stove top in the kitchen, but it quickly spread into the exhaust hoods and duct work.

“The grease and residue left in the exhaust hood[s] became the fuel load for the fire, due

to the improper and negligent cleaning of the grease build-up by the defendant,” the suit stated.

The suit alleged the fire in the kitchen exhaust hoods and ductwork and the resulting damage was caused by A+ Exhaust Hood’s failure to properly clean and repair the exhaust hoods and failing to properly clean the grease build-up in the

hoods and related attachments or connections.

It also alleged the company improperly approved the continued use of the exhaust hoods less than two weeks before the fire, when it knew or should have known it was not safe to do so and should have known danger was imminent.

The Office reopened for business in October 2014.

Aurora man charged in North Aurora home invasion, burglary Thursday

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – An Aurora man has been charged with home invasion and burglary after police said he broke into an apartment Thursday morning in the 200 block of Butterfield Road.

Irvin Bernal, 23, of the 1000 block of Spruce Street, Aurora, was charged with home invasion, a Class X felony, as well as residential burglary, a felony, and domestic battery, a misdemeanor. As of Thursday afternoon, he was in cus-

tody in the Kane County Jail, with bond set at $100,000.

At 2:45 a.m., officers of the North Aurora Police Department responded to an apartment complex in the 200 block of Butterfield Road for Irvin Bernal a report of disturbance, according to a news release from the North Aurora Police Department.

Upon arrival, officers

learned that Bernal kicked in a window screen, illegally entered an apartment, damaged a table and TV, and battered his 21-year-old ex-girlfriend and a 22-year-old man, who were present in the apartment, the release stated.

He then removed a Sony Playstation 3 and fled. Both of the victims sustained minor injuries but refused medical care, the release stated.

Officers were able to locate Bernal near Lilac Lane and Butterfield Road, and he was taken into custody without incident, the release stated.

Crack sealing program to continue next week The Kane County crack sealing program is scheduled to continue into the next section of roads, starting next week, with an anticipated duration of about four weeks, weather permitting.

The program involves filling and sealing roadway cracks on various county roads to extend the life of the pavement.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A woman sentenced in a 2009 crash that killed a St. Charles couple wants to withdraw her guilty plea, claiming the state did not use an approved method in lab tests that determined there was marijuana in her system at the time of the crash.

Alia Bernard’s attorney recently filed a motion to withdraw her plea and dismiss the aggravated driving under the influence charges that were filed against her. A court hearing on the case is set for July 1.

The Illinois Appellate Court last year ruled Bernard could file a new motion to withdraw her guilty plea. She had been sentenced to seven years in prison.

It later was reduced to six years, but the appellate court ruled the case return to trial court as it existed when Bernard initially was sentenced to seven years in February 2012.

Bernard was sentenced in February 2012 after she pleaded guilty to two counts of felony aggravated driving under the influence in a crash that killed Wade Thomas, 44, of St. Charles, and his wife, De-

The crash occurred about 8:20 a.m. May 23, 2009, at the intersection of Route 47 and Smith Road in Blackberry Township, south of Elburn. A vehicle in the southbound lane of Route 47 stopped to turn left onto Smith Road, followed by two more vehicles, waiting for several motorcycles to pass. The motorcycles were heading north.

Bernard was driving a 1999 Toyota Solara, which hit the last stopped vehicle in the rear. The collision created a chain reaction that pushed the first vehicle into the path of the oncoming motorcycles, killing the couple. In all, the crash involved three cars and six motorcycles.

Geneva woman charged with possession of heroin

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A Geneva woman, who still was under court supervision for a felony burglary charge, was charged in Geneva with two counts of felony possession of heroin and other controlled substances, court records show.

Jordan P. Cupit, 26, of the 900 block of Longmeadow Drive, also was charged

May 13 with misdemeanor possession of 11 hypodermic syringes and needles, drug paraphernalia – a metal spoon commonly used to prepare heroin for injection – and a white plastic straw cut for snorting heroin.

As of Thursday afternoon, Cupit was being held in the Kane County Jail on $50,000 bond. She would have to post $5,000, or 10 percent, to be released.

The felony charges carry penalties of one to three years in prison and fines of up to $25,000. Cupit’s next court date is scheduled for July 17.

GENEVA – An Elgin man was charged with felony possession of marijuana after police said they found two large Mason jars of marijuana in his car, after he crashed his car and abandoned it, according to police reports.

Taylor Acosta, 24, of the 300 block of Monument Road, Elgin, was charged May 20 with posession of more than 30 but less than Taylor Acosta 500 grams of marijuana, as well as misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

According to police reports, Acosta hit a tree and left his car in the front yard of a house on the 800 block of Wood Avenue. Witnesses told police Acosta ran from the scene, reports stated.

Police eventually found him at Starbucks at 1441 Randall Road, according to police reports.

Acosta posted $150 bail, 10 percent of the $1,500 bond that was set. His next court appearance is pending.

Intercessions, large and small I’m writing this the morning of Memorial Day. I woke to the wind slapping the side of our house, the clouds low, dark and threatening, as if punishing me for failing to express my gratitude in print for the men and women who gave their lives for the USA. Those soldiers interceded on our behalf, their deaths commemorated with a folded flag and flags flown over front porches.

This Memorial Day, I’d like to acknowledge a less formal, less dire intercession than that which ends in death, but one that still enhances and prolongs the lives of others.

Take yesterday’s phone call from my brother, Bill.

St. Charles North’s Waslawski growing up with each outing of freshman season

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com ROLLING MEADOWS – If you look at the roster of the St. Charles North softball team, starting pitcher Jillian Waslawski is listed as part of the Class of 2018.

But her performance this season, and most recently in the playoffs, is much beyond that of a 15-year-old freshman.

After a 5-0, complete-game shutout win against Elk Grove in Tuesday’s Class 4A Rolling Meadows Sectional semifinal, Waslawski improved to 12-4 on the season, and in all likelihood will take the mound against Schaumburg on Saturday to try to capture North’s first sectional title since the 2011 season when the North Stars finished as state runner-up.

“She has become a better pitcher as the year has gone on. ... There’s no doubt,” North coach Tom Poulin said after Tuesday’s win. “She’s learned how to pitch to certain batters, whether it’s inside or outside, high or low, and as a coach, it’s comforting to know that she’s someone we can trust out there.”

In the win, the freshman righthander allowed only four hits, and retired 15 of 17 batters in one stretch. But just as fellow North Star baseball pitcher Cory Wright does to be successful, Waslawski pitches more to contact than worrying about striking out batters.

Waslawski has walked only 14 batters in 106 innings (466 batters faced) this season. That equates to one walk for every 33 batters, so control has not been an issue.

It also helps to have not only her older sister, center fielder Kaitlyn, on the team, but also an entire team and defense behind her that she trusts.

“It makes my job so much easier out there,” Waslawski said. “This season has been a great experience for me, ... and having [Kaitlyn] definitely helped me be more comfortable. But we are such a tight-knit group that we just love being

“She’s a very quick learner,” Dennison said. “She is very accepting of feedback and even gives me feedback during the games. She may be a freshman as far as age, but her maturity is way beyond her years. Coming into this season, we were pretty open as far as pitching went, and she really stepped in and took the reins.

“We also came into this year thinking we had one of the best defenses in the state. I think we confirmed that we are the best in the state, defensively (with three NCAA Division I outfielders), so trusting her defense is pretty easy when you have something of that caliber behind you.”

Even if she might not have raced how she had hoped, there certainly was a silver lining to Martines’ trip to nationals. She said the experience of being there provides plenty of motivation for her senior season, not just to return to nationals but to turn in a top finish. She has her sights set on a top-five qualifying time next year, as well as earning All-American status.

Reflecting on her 2015 trip to nationals, Martines said, “It definitely lets me know or gives me hope that I can do it. The time that I ran a week before, if I would have ran that at nationals, I would have placed top five. So I know I can do it. I’ve seen the other girls compete out there, and it’s just anyone’s game. When it comes to that day, if you have a good day, you have a really good day. If you don’t have a good day, it’s just you drop back.

“It’s anyone’s day, whoever comes to compete, so it gives me hope that I can do that, too.”

Annie Martines had one last chance to make the NCAA Division III track and field national championships. All she had to do was post a qualifying time in the 400-meter hurdles.

There was only one catch: She had to race by herself.

A one-person race is kind of a foreign concept in track, but Martines was the only one competing in the 400 hurdles at the last-chance meet last month at Augustana, where she recently finished her junior year.

Martines admitted she was apprehensive when she learned it was going to be her against the clock and no other competitors, but the St. Charles East product mustered the mental toughness and ran the best race of her season.

“I was really scared at first, but my coaches calmed me down. They said, ‘You only need you to qualify. You don’t need anybody else,’ ” Martines said. “I just took that and literally ran with it.”

Martines turned in a time of 1:01.84, a season-best effort, and qualified for the national championships. That qualifying race was a moment she said she’ll remember for a long time.

Gillaspie credits dad’s influence, too

His proximity to the stomping grounds of his older brother, Conor, a White Sox third baseman, helps explain why.

“Growing up, being in a baseball house, my dad was there helping me and my older brother,” Casey Gillaspie said.

“As far as switch-hitting goes, it’s tough. I mean, there’s two different swings there, but he’s been there to kind of lean on.”

Mark Gillaspie was an All-American at Mississippi State and climbed as high as Triple-A in the Cubs, San Diego Padres and Kansas City Royals organizations during a playing career that spanned from 1981 to 1988.

Conor Gillaspie, who entered Thursday hitting .254 in 114 at-bats for the Sox this season, was born in 1987, Mark Gillaspie’s penultimate season.

Casey Gillaspie entered the world – and shortly the batter’s box – in January 1993.

The family welcomed a daughter, Makenzie, an eventual Wisconsin-Milwaukee soccer midfielder, in between.

“I don’t know much about soccer, unfortunately,” Casey Gillaspie said.

It’s easy to understand why.

Although Casey Gillaspie and Conor Gillaspie never shared a diamond as teammates, both took diligently to their father’s tutelage.

The family relocated from Milwaukee to Omaha, Nebraska, during Casey Gillaspie’s childhood, and both Gillaspie brothers enjoyed collegiate playing careers at Wichita State.

As a junior in 2014, Casey Gillaspie compiled a .389 average, .520 on-base percentage and 15 home runs in 59 games, earning a nod as Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year. Tampa Bay selected him with the 20th overall pick of the draft.

“The Rays were interested a little bit that I knew of,” Ca-

sey Gillaspie said of the draft, “but I didn’t really know going into the draft who was going to pick me, where I was going to go, you know. I was just excited for the opportunity to play.”

The Rays organization can attest. After hitting .262 in 71 games in Short-A last summer, Gillaspie has emerged in his first full professional season, hitting .378 in his past 10 games entering Thursday and .272 with nine home runs and 31 RBIs in 47 games overall.

“He’s done well. He’s a hard worker and he just keeps getting better every day,” said Bowling Green hitting coach Dan DeMent, a Frankfort native and Providence alumnus.

“He keeps getting better, and he’s definitely got the talent and the tools that you need.”

Casey Gillaspie also relies on his versatility off the field.

Although he’d enjoy an in-sea-

son rendezvous with his older brother – who bats only from the left side – perhaps it’s a sign that the Sox were in Arlington, Texas, while Bowling Green played in the Chicago suburbs.

“We talk when we can, mostly not about baseball, just because it’s part of our everyday lives,” Casey Gillaspie said.

“We kind of like to step away from it and just be brothers.”

Dog daze: Cougars general manager Curtis Haug said the club sold more than 4,000 hot dogs during Wednesday’s inaugural One Cent Wiener Wednesday promotion.

In addition, Haug said the Cougars sold more than 1,000 tickets than on June 4, 2014, the first Wednesday home game of that month. Attendance for the promotion was 2,863.

“Obviously, it worked, and I think if it weren’t for the first

game of the Stanley Cup (Final), Blackhawks and Lightning, I think we’d have had more people, for sure,” Haug said.

“It’s a great start for One Cent Wiener Wednesday, and I think it’s going to be something that builds over the course of the season.”

Haug compared the promotion’s ideal growth path to that of the Cougars’ Thirsty Thursdays, which were implemented in 2013 and feature $1 select beers and small sodas.

“It took a year or two to get some traction,” Haug said, “and now those Thirsty Thursdays seem to really be taking hold. And I think that’s whats going to happen with these Wiener Wednesdays as we have four more this season.”

Upcoming Wiener Wednesdays are set for July 8, July 22, July 29 and Aug. 12.

“Our coaches have been harping on us all year to be

Scholarships are awarded based upon work experience, academic record, potential and leadership, and participation in school and community activities, the release states.

Recipients are selected annually by an independent organization.

Each selected student has received a $4,000 scholarship to use for the coming school year, the release states.

Nuts and peanuts are full of ‘good’ fats Dear Doctor K: I love peanuts, but I try to avoid them, and other nuts, because they are high in fat.

But I recently heard that eating nuts might help you live longer.

What is your advice regarding nuts?

Dear Reader: Like you, I love nuts – especially almonds. To be candid, dear readers, Doctor K lacks discipline when it comes to eating nuts. Perhaps it’s one of my redeeming vices. However, I’ve found a solution to my discipline problem, which I’ll soon reveal.

It’s time to put nuts back on your menu. Peanuts are legumes and not officially “nuts.” That honor falls to tree nuts like almonds, pecans and walnuts. But all of these types of nuts contain a rich store of vitamins and minerals.

I, too, avoided nuts for years.

But about 15 years ago, the scientific studies began to show that nuts (in moderation) are healthy foods. Since then, I’ve been snacking on nuts regularly.

Regarding your concern about the fat content of nuts: Yes, nuts are high in fat and calories. And they are also good for you. As I’ve said before, there are “good” fats and “bad” fats. Nuts mainly have good fats, in the form of mono- and

A study published recently in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine found that people who ate nuts were more likely to live longer than people who didn’t.

The study looked at nut and peanut consumption in two large groups of people spanning geographic, racial, ethnic and income boundaries: • 72,000 Americans, ages 40 to 79, living in the southern United States. Most lived on low incomes, and two-thirds were African-American.

• 135,000 men and women in Shanghai, China, ages 40 to 74.

The researchers used surveys to tally nut and peanut consumption. They followed the groups for several years and counted how many participants died and from what causes. In both groups, people who regularly ate peanuts and other nuts were substantially less likely to have died of any

cause – particularly heart disease – over the study period than those who rarely ate nuts. This was true even when the researchers accounted for risk factors such as smoking, obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes.

An earlier study done at Harvard showed that nuts and peanut butter may help to prevent Type 2 diabetes. Researchers found that consuming 1 tablespoon of peanut butter or 1 ounce of peanuts or other nuts, five or more times a week, was associated with a more than 20 percent reduced risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Because nuts are high in calories, make your portion sizes small to keep your waistline in check.

How did I solve my discipline problem when it came to nuts? A popular grocery store chain sells nuts in small cellophane packages. I have a package almost every mid-afternoon. And, yes, most of the time, I stop at just one package. Not rational, but it works for me.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 17, and Jacob, who is, or was, my boyfriend and also my best friend, is 16.

Last week my aunt came to Boston to visit us for a few days. She wanted to see a Red Sox baseball game, so she took a cab to the game and left her car in our driveway.

Jacob came over to see me and wanted to know who owned the car. When he found out it belonged to a relative of mine, he asked me if I had the key.

When I told him no, he said: “That’s no big deal.

I can hotwire it and we’ll take it for a spin.” That’s just what he did.

Well, Jacob got stopped by the police for running a red light. He then was written up for driving without a license.

My dad was called at work and had to come pick us up and take us home, and the car was impounded.

My aunt is super angry and is going to charge Jacob with auto theft. If that happens, he’ll be in big trouble. I’ve tried to talk my aunt out of being vindictive, but she won’t listen to me.

Now I’ve been grounded, and I don’t know how to help Jacob. He lives with his mother and three sisters. His father left the family several years ago.

Have you apologized to her? If you want her to drop the charges, Jacob and you must both apologize sincerely and ask her how you can atone for the wrong you did to her.

Her birthday is coming up soon, and she told me that she wants me to buy her a bikini bathing suit. In fact, she took me to the store and showed me the one she wanted.

Believe me when I say it is skimpy.

I don’t mind getting her what she wants, but she will be opening all of her gifts in front of family and friends at a party, and I will feel very uncomfortable when she opens my gift. Should I buy her something else?
