Jank Guitar Store to open June 12

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles native next week will open a guitar shop in the exact location where his father once owned a guitar shop.

The Jank Guitar Store will open at 1 p.m. June 12 at 217 W. Main St., St. Charles, its owner, Scott Corbin, said.

After the presentation of a guitar to St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina and a ribbon-cutting event, attendees can see the store and receive a $300 gift card toward guitar lessons and merchandise.

The store then will be open seven days a week by appointment only for lessons. Some people already have signed up for lessons on June 13, Corbin said.

Corbin was barely a year old when his father, Jeffrey Corbin, opened St. Charles

Guitar in 1985 at 271 W. Main St. in St. Charles. Other businesses had since opened and closed at the property, and Scott Corbin saw it was vacant during a visit last fall.

“I am fortunate to have had a very successful career as a professional guitarist, and I decided to open The Jank Guitar Store because I saw many budget cuts leading to the loss of music education,” Corbin wrote in a statement. “Music changed my life, and I think it is vital for kids to learn about music in school and after school.”

Corbin’s method for guitar lessons is called “Press, Play, Record.” Press refers to having a beginning guitar player know how and where to press on the guitar.

The core value of play refers to body posture and learning chords, melody and musicality, Corbin said.

Record is the last part because knowing how to record guitar playing in the age of social media and the Internet is as important as knowing how to play, he said.

The store is named after a signature sound – jank – that Corbin has created as part of the band Casely and the Jank.

Corbin still plans to work with the band and do professional studio work when he’s not at the store.

Park district tennis lessons for kids of all ages

By CAROL HAGGAS editorial@kcchronicle.com Love might literally mean nothing in tennis, but mastering the finer points of this centuries-old game can mean everything when it comes to enjoying a sport of a lifetime.

For kids as young as 4 years old to teens and adults, tennis lessons at the St. Charles Park District can instill the fundamentals and fine-tune the intricacies of backhands and bounces, lobs and lets, doubles and drop shots.

Using formats suggested by the United States Tennis Association, tennis lessons are administered by the staff of Gilberts-based KBC Tennis under the direction of coach Art Steuber. Guided by local tennis athletes at the high school and college levels, tennis students are paired according to age range: ages 4 to 6, ages 7 to 8, ages 9 to 10 and ages 11 to 15. Beginner and advanced lessons also are available for those ages 11 and older.

“Players start out using a bigger tennis ball and

play on a shorter court,” said Melissa Caine, athletic programs supervisor for the park district. “When kids

are able to manage essentials more quickly, they can begin enjoying the game that much faster. The sooner they start having fun, the more they’ll want to learn and practice.”

Lessons are available across a wide and varied schedule and at numerous facilities, making sessions available to all interested players. While Pottawatomie Park remains the most popular destination, according to Caine, courts at Harvest Hills Park and Primrose Farm Park attract residents on the west side of St. Charles.

Four weeklong sessions are offered Monday through Wednesday or Tuesday through Thursday. Each hour-long lesson can begin as early as 9 a.m. and start as late as 6 p.m. and will offer various levels of instruction and competency throughout the season so students will not repeat the same lesson each session.

“Fundamentals are key, but each class is designed to help students progress through the sport,” Caine said.

Specific sessions are designated as Level 2 classes to help students who are ready to advance to the next level

of instruction.

Accessible and affordable, tennis is one of the few sports where one does not have to invest a ton of money in order to have fun.

Rackets, for instance, are available on loan from the park district.

“This is ideal for someone who wants to try the sport but doesn’t want to make the investment in equipment until they’re sure they want to continue pursuing it,” Caine said.

Long recognized as a sport that encourages strength and stamina, tennis has other far-reaching health benefits, as well.

Studies have shown tennis encourages tactical thinking skills while developing physical agility. Those who play tennis are more likely to have a strong sense of optimism and self-esteem, while also being better able to control tension and anxiety.

But try telling that to a 4-year-old who just wants to go out and hit the ball over the net.

Chicago blues musician John Primer to play at Paramount Fox Valley Music Foundation putting on show in Aurora

The foundation has booked Chicago blues musician John Primer to perform at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Paramount Theatre’s Grand Gallery, 23 E. Galena Blvd. in downtown

Aurora.

The concert is free.

“We thought we might do something a little bit different and have a major event at the beginning of June to kind of draw attention to Blues on the Fox and create two to three weeks of blues interest,” said Steve Warrenfeltz, owner of Kiss The Sky record store in Batavia and executive director of the Fox Valley Music Foundation, a nonprofit music

foundation.

The Fox Valley Music Foundation also is responsible for putting on a weeklong series of events leading up the Blues on the Fox festival, which will be June 19 and 20 at RiverEdge Park, 360 N. Broadway Ave., Aurora.

The Friday show is being held in conjunction with First Fridays in Downtown Aurora, a night of art, fun, music and community at lo-

cal businesses and venues in downtown Aurora held on the first Friday evening of the month. A full schedule can be found by visiting www.auroradowntown.org.

As part of the Primer show, there will be an exhibition by artist Rex Bohn, who is responsible for most of the Blues on the Fox posters in the past 19 years. Aurora has a rich blues history.

In 1937 and 1938, Sonny Boy Williamson, Henry Townsend and other notable Bluebird artists made re-

cordings at the Leland Hotel in downtown Aurora.

Warrenfeltz was one of the volunteers who helped put on Blues on the Fox until the Paramount Theatre took over running the festival. He said the purpose of the Fox Valley Music Foundation is to “preserve, promote and protect the music of the Fox Valley area and to educate.”

The downtown partnership has coordinated the “Chair-ity” event. According to a news release, the DSCP encouraged businesses, community groups and artists to “create imaginative and unique works of art appropriate for public display.” The entries range from Girl Scout troops, high school classes, downtown businesses and local artist alike, the release stated.

“We have been extremely impressed with the amount of creativity and artistry that the participants have brought to this; we hope it’s a huge successes,” DSCP volunteer Tom Turcan stated in the release.

Also, an online auction went live Monday. Each chair has a tag on it to indicate whether it is up for auction.

The tags have numbers that correlate with the online auction website. The website for the auction is http://chair15.

People can bid on their favorite chairs and if they win, can take home the chair at the conclusion of the event over Labor Day weekend. Proceeds for the auction will go toward downtown beatification efforts and will be announced at the conclusion of the event.

Geneva • Nathan A. Gay, 19, of the 1000 block of DeShannon Court, Batavia, was charged Saturday, May 23, with underage drinking and obstruction by giving an officer a fake name.

• Robert H. Page, 60, of the 1N1000 block of Kautz Road, West Chicago, was charged Wednesday, May 20, with driving under the influence, improper lane use and illegal transportation of alcohol.

According to a crash report, Page hit four traffic arrow signs belonging to the city of Geneva on the 500 block of Kautz Road, 320 feet north of Geneva Drive.

Page was taken to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield for treatment.

• Bobby Lee Pena, 30, of the 1600 block of South Third Place, St. Charles, was charged Monday, May 18, with aggravated assault, public intoxication and unlawfully being in Esping Park, 227 Briar Lane, after closing. According to police reports, Pena advanced on the officer, making him afraid of receiving a battery.

• An unattended scooter valued at $300 was reported stolen Friday, May 15, from a wooded area in Elm Park, 450 Elm Ave., while its owner was trying to catch frogs.

• Three bales of compacted cardboard valued at $420 was reported stolen Tuesday, May 12, from an area set aside for recycling at the Fresh Market, 718 Commons Drive.

BATAVIA – Craig Foltos will clip hair for 24 hours straight this weekend for a good cause.

For the 26th year, Foltos, who owns Foltos Tonsorial Parlor at 7 E. Wilson St. in Batavia, will cut hair and donate the proceeds to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana as part of Chop Around the Clock.

Last year, the event raised $15,000. The Ronald McDonald House provides a home for families of seriously ill children who receive treatment at nearby hospitals. There are several Ronald McDonald Houses in the Chicago area.

After 26 years, Foltos said he still enjoys putting on the event.

“I try to bring awareness to the organization,” he said. “I like seeing people smile when they help out. People like to help.”

Foltos volunteers every month at a Ronald McDonald House and cuts hair for the families and patients who are there.

Born and raised in Chicago, Keith maintained his roots as a Chicago Bears fan and season after season continued to cheer for the Chicago Cubs.

To prevent these unwanted outcomes, those with diabetes are strongly urged to control their blood sugar, blood cholesterol, and blood pressure and get regular eye exams. It is also important that the eye doctor monitor the development of “diabetic macular edema,” swelling of the macula due to fluid leakage and accumulation, and “proliferative diabetic retinopathy,” the abnormal growth of blood vessels in the retina.

GENEVA – The Kane County Executive Committee on Wednesday approved authorizing contracts on bids received for the $1.3 million Diagnostic Center project to go to the full board, which meets Tuesday.

The capital project would relocate the center from the former jail site at 757 E. Fabyan Parkway in Batavia and add it to the Kane County Circuit Clerk and branch court facility at 540 S. Randall Road in St. Charles, officials said.

The lowest responsible bids were from Schramm Construction Corporation of St. Charles, for $383,000; Swedberg Electric of Sycamore for $168,130; Mechanical Incorporated of Freeport for nearly $270,000; and Nelson Fire Protection Company of Rockford for $15,000, records show.

Other costs for contingency, management fees, moving and storage put the full cost at a little more than $1.3 million, officials said.

The center was established in 1973 to provide comprehensive forensic psychology for the 15th Judicial Circuit, county records show.

It can’t be accredited by the American Psychological Association because the center’s physical building does not provide enough space to work, records show.

Among the issues detailed in a 2014 report are air conditioning and heating as chronic problems and poor water quality. Also, three staff members were diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning in 2014.

Kane County Board member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn wrote in an email that, “Building out existing shell

space at that building would cost about a third of a new building.”

Board member Barb Wojnicki, R-Campton Hills, a past chairwoman of the Judicial and Public Safety Committee, was critical of the Fabyan location’s isolation and crowded conditions.

“Three interns [who] do the interviewing are sharing one little space,” Wojnicki said. “It’s very inappropriate and not private.”

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said safety is the county’s first concern, but it also is important to get payback on the capital expense from fully using interns. The stipend for three interns is $49,000, but they perform nearly $1 million of work at the diagnostic center, Lauzen said.

With a larger work area, the center could get accreditation by the American Psychological Association, and Lauzen said that helps get more grant money.

The center is accredited by the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers, National Matching Service, Association of Chicagoland Externship and Practicum Training, records show.

The staff does 24 types of diagnostic assessment, including risk assessment to prevent domestic homicide, sex offender evaluations, GPS monitoring, aggression and substance abuse measures, group and family therapy, crisis intervention and suicide assessments.

The center also does pre-employment evaluations for police and correctional officers, court security, emergency dispatchers and probation officers, records show. In 2013, the center performed 569 evaluations, records show.

little support for proposed pedestrian crossing

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting voted, 8-4, against installing a pedestrian crossing with a raised concrete median at Houston Street and North Batavia Avenue (Route 31).

That recommendation will now go to the full Batavia City Council on June 15. Stan Oke, the owner of Batavia Avenue Mobil gas station – at the southwest corner of the intersection – told aldermen the proposed concrete median would significantly impact access to his business.

“A raised curb would devastate my gasoline business,” Oke said. “It would also have an impact on my repair and towing business.”

Batavia Police Chief Gary Schira voiced concerns that putting a crosswalk at the intersection would make it more dangerous.

Schira said he would rather have pedestrians and bicyclists cross at the signalized intersection at Wilson Street and Route 31, just south of Houston Street and Batavia Avenue.

John Gamble, the chairman of the Batavia Bicycle Commission, presented a petition signed by more than 200 people imploring Bata-

via aldermen to move ahead with the pedestrian crossing.

He said the concrete median would allow for a safe area for pedestrians to stand until traffic has cleared, so they can cross the street.

Gamble told aldermen that raised medians contribute to a 46 percent reduction in pedestrian crashes, reduce motor vehicle crashes by 15 percent and reduce vehicle speeds.

“We want something done to reduce the danger of it,” Gamble said.

Fifth Ward Alderman Lucy Thelin Atac and 1st Ward Alderman Michael O’Brien both supported installing the pedestrian crossing.

“I’m a biker,” Atac said.

“Bikeability and walkability is very important to our downtown.”

Fourth Ward Alderman Jamie Saam and 6th Ward Alderman Nick Cerone both voiced frustration with the process and said they didn’t support either option – installing the pedestrian crossing or doing nothing.

New accessible sidewalk ramps, signage and a raised concrete median had been proposed for the intersection. In 2012, the city received federal funding for pedestrian crossing improvements to eight intersections along Routes 25 and 31.

A rather grand graduation It’s time for me to stash away my stack of pencils and finally say good-bye to my hefty JanSport backpack. Two weeks ago, I graduated from Batavia High School at a ceremony held at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

Now, I know what you’re all thinking: Gasp! The name of this column is no longer relevant! She has graduated high school! Just slow down there folks; I was freaking out too until I realized the name of this column can simply be changed.

Since my high school diploma has already been achieved, I can just switch this title to be toward earning a college diploma/degree. See, I’m always thinking.

As stated, my school held its graduation at Northern Illinois, which seems to be a more than common place around the area to hold the ceremony. However, having graduation at NIU for Batavia High School seems to be a rather new experience.

Four years ago, my older brother graduated from BHS, and his class held its graduation in the school gym.

This got me thinking. There are many people who are in favor of having high school graduations at bigger venues like nearby colleges and auditoriums. On the contrary, there are still individuals who believe the proper way to leave high school is to graduate in the building you just spent four years in. So, which option is better?

For obvious reasons, ceremonies at colleges are much better options space-wise. With 10,000 comfortable seats to choose from, this beats picking from a mere 2,000 back-aching bleacher seats in a humid gymnasium. With bigger venues, there are no restrictions on the number of guests each graduate can bring. When my brother graduated in the Class of 2011, he was only able to invite five

For many families, it was irritating to pick and choose who to invite.

On the other side, from my personal experience two weeks ago, larger isn’t always better.

At NIU, I witnessed many graduates confused about where to go before the ceremony began, and many had trouble finding their families after the ceremony. (I was one of these people.)

Also, there was clearly no time for families to take pictures of graduates with their graduation gowns on since there was so much commotion and such a short amount of time (only 20 minutes) to try and squeeze photos in.

Additionally, with such a large amount of space, there is always a chance the audio systems can be a bit messed up.

During my graduation, where I was sitting, my peers and I could barely hear the speakers talk because the acoustics were so terrible.

When I was 14 years old, I remember being at freshman orientation with my parents in the BHS gym. The principal announced to my class the next time we would all be together like this would be four years from that date, at high school graduation. That stuck with me.

I must say, I was sort of sad when, four years later, I never got to graduate in that exact building like the principal had said.

St. Charles sculptor making his mark on area Bellaver’s sculpture ‘Reflections’ to be installed along Fox River

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – “Ekwabet,” The 15-foot-tall bronze Potawatomi Indian that looks over the Fox River in St. Charles, is just one example of how St. Charles sculptor Guy Bellaver has made his mark on the area.

He continues to make his mark. His latest sculpture, “Reflections,” is set to be installed this summer in the new Volunteer Plaza near the St. Charles Municipal Building, and his “Prairie Song. Q” sculpture is part of an inaugural sculpture exhibition at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Bellaver about the world of sculpting.

Eric Schelkopf: It must be thrilling to you to have your “Prairie Song. Q” sculpture chosen for the inaugural Lincoln Park Zoo sculpture exhibition.

Guy Bellaver: Oh, yes. They are having a sculpture exhibition there for the summer.

I was glad that the sculpture was so well-received by them. That was nice.

I like to see the public’s response to my sculptures. Sometimes the response is positive, and sometimes it’s negative.

But as an artist, you enjoy both responses, because people are thinking about art.

Schelkopf: What was your idea for “Prairie Song. Q”?

Bellaver: Well, having done some shows out West, the prairie look is very flat, so this is sort of a piece that goes up to eight feet, and then comes back down.

The Q stands for quark. At Fermilab, when they collide particles, the only way they can know what is happening is by photographs. So, they take the negative photograph, and look at it, and they can see the particles disintegrating.

I thought it would be neat to have the particles moving from one mass to another.

So, that’s why my quark series developed.

Schelkopf: I understand that the sculpture that you made and had fabricated in China – “Reflections” – will be installed in the new Volunteer Plaza along the Fox River near the St. Charles Municipal Building. What is the story behind the sculpture?

Bellaver: Well, we started about five years ago trying to raise funds to have this fabricated or cast. I did a model, sent the model to them, and the Tany Foundry in China enlarged it.

We thought it would be nice to honor Max and Doris Hunt. They were very involved in the community. The River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles started the Volunteer Plaza.

This sculpture is to represent people getting involved in their community. It’s highly polished, so if you are standing and looking at yourself in the piece, you can also see a bit of St. Charles reflected in it.

So, there you are in your community, and you can see yourself in your community. There are a lot of people who have done a lot over the years, as far as volunteering goes.

Schelkopf: How big is the sculpture?

Bellaver: It’s 12 feet tall, and weighs about a ton. It’s not real heavy even though it’s big, because as you can see, it has a lot of open space.

Schelkopf: I know you have sculptures around the area, such as the The Kane County Veterans Memorial in Geneva and [“Ekwabet,”] the bronze Potawatomi Indian sculpture along the Fox River in St. Charles. Tell me about the process involved with the Potawatomi Indian sculpture.

Bellaver: I did a 15 1/2 foot-tall Styrofoam sculpture model, sent it to the foundry. They made molds of it and did the casting. That was 121 pieces that they

welded back together.

Schelkopf: What’s the greatest satisfaction you get out of doing what you do?

Bellaver: Creating a piece is exciting.

The other part is having people see and enjoy, or even be upset with a sculpture because it means they are being exposed to another dimension.

As an artist, you are always hoping that you are able to convey some type of feeling and have people respond.

Schelkopf: What advice would you have for someone just starting out in the sculpting field, or who wants to be a sculptor?

Bellaver: You want to be an artist, you have to produce. You need to show people what ability you have.

You have to produce, and show it to people who can help you in your career.

Patchouli to blend folk music, art at Norris exhibition

ksilva@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A kaleidoscope of guitars painted on canvas combine to create a vibrant flock of birds in one of the paintings that is being exhibited through Sunday, July 12, at the Dellora A. Norris Cultural Arts Center in St. Charles.

“Science tells us that everything is a vibration, so [I] symbolize everything as an instrument; something that we know vibrates music,” artist Bruce Hecksel said of a painting entitled “Migration 1” – a part of the exhibited series “Terra Guitarra,” which uses guitars to render colorful landscapes and life. “We’re all really these vibratory essences and it’s about unity; it’s about the interconnectedness of everything. ... People are used to the quantum world these days, so it touches on that, but in a very accessible way.”

Not only a painter with a penchant for guitars, Hecksel is a guitarist himself. He and his wife, Julie, formed world-music-infused band Patchouli 18 years ago.

The award-winning folk-music duo will combine art and music, as part of Norris’ “Music in the Gallery” concert series at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 7.

“Our primary thing is playing music ... but we like to incorporate art and music if we can – that’s kind of our thing,” said Julie Patchouli, who is the group’s lyricist and singer. “It’s a unique opportunity to not only hear music, but see it.”

The Patchouli concert will provide attendees with a “combined music and art experience” for just a little more than the cost of a movie, Smith said, adding that the “Music in the Gallery” series provides an intimate space for up-close and personal live musical performances.

Patchouli’s “new American folk” sound blends elements of folk, pop, flamenco and jazz

with world beat rhythms, while their instrumental group, Terra Guitarra, centers on flamenco-inspired songs using the acoustic guitar. Songs from both incarnations of the group

will be performed at the event.

“We’re kind of like storytellers while we’re singing, and we lead people on the journey of why we wrote a song, especially with the

themselves. Having toured nearly every state in the country over the last 18 years, the current Wisconsin residents have recorded 18 CDs and have their music played on radio stations all over the world, but, Hecksel said, being in St. Charles is like being home.

“Especially at [The Norris]; there’s always a special energy [at an art center], because there’s something fortunate about a place that has been set aside by somebody to represent art. It has an intention,” Hecksel said, adding that integrating music with art is his favorite way to perform.

“Combining [art and music] together ... really shows who we are as artists and what we’re trying to communicate. A picture is worth 1,000 words.”

Seventh-inning walk halts St. Charles North’s season

It had to come to an end at some point? Right?

St. Charles North was rolling heading into Wednesday’s Class 3A Sectional semifinal against Glenbard North, but the Panthers and starting pitcher Luke Greenberg shut out the North Stars, 1-0, to end North’s season.

The only run scored in the game was on a bases loaded walk in the top of the seventh inning. North coach Todd Genke took a trip to the mound to talk to pitcher Tyler Mettetal.

The sophomore southpaw had already thrown 115 pitches and had allowed two runners on base after striking out the leadoff hitter.

With reliever Christian Sidoti ready in the bullpen, and the top of the Panthers’ order due up in Eric Orze, Genke elected to leave Mettetal on the mound. “[Mettetal] has been a guy we have relied on a lot this season,” Genke said. “I went out and talked to him and I told it was OK if he wanted to come out. He looked at me and said, ‘Coach, I want to stay in ... I want to get these next two guys.’ ” “Sometimes you have to go with your gut,” Genke added. “It’s a shame to lose a game that way but [Glenbard North] is a tremendous hitting team and Tyler really shut them down.”

Orze grounded to Tyler’s brother, Zach, at shortstop and an off-balanced flip was not in time, loading the bases. After Tyler Mettetal got Nick Jasinski to pop out to shortstop, he walked No. 3 hitter Nick Barrett on a full count to force in the game’s only run.

The walk ended Mettetal’s day with a season-high 126 pitches. The sophomore struck out 10 Panthers, but

“I’m so proud of the way each and every one of us battled all the way until the end,” senior Cory Wright said. “[Mettetal] pitched his heart out today, and gave us seven innings of everything he had. It’s tough ... to look at everything we accomplished this year and all the memories we made. This is a tough one to swallow and it’s going to sting for a while.”

North’s best opportunity to score came with the exact situation Genke could have drawn up if given the chance.

The North Stars had runners on first and third with two outs in the fifth inning and Wright, the Upstate Eight Conference Player of the Year, up to bat.

well as he could on a line to second. Barrett, a mid-season sophomore call-up, made a diving grab, robbing North of at least one run.

After seeing their season end at the hands of the North Stars, 2-1, in last year’s regional final, Glenbard North (25-10) and coach Rich Smelko were happy to see the team avenge that loss and win a game that was as fundamental as any game you will see.

“Both teams are very good and made routine plays,” Smelko said. “Hats off to [Mettetal], he was filthy out there. We had guys on [almost] every inning and we knew it might take something like that and we were fortunate enough to get the run and hold on.”

The loss will not take away

from the season North ended up having, despite a shorter postseason run than most expected.

But with the departure of seniors such as Wright, Madsen and catcher Kyle Khoury, an outing like Mettetal’s Wednesday showed great promise for what will surely be a fired up North Stars program heading into next spring.

“I know these guys are going to be as motivated as ever to win state next year,” Wright said. “You need to be playing your best baseball at this time of the year and we had been for the most part.

I know these guys will come back hungry and this loss will definitely stick with not just me, but everyone on this team for a long time.”

Kaneland’s season ends in close defeat

jseverson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Each time the Kaneland baseball team made the game interesting, Belvidere North’s Levon Smith gave the Blue Thunder just enough cushion.

The junior had a big day at the plate and pitched well enough to beat the Knights, 6-5, in a Class 3A Sycamore Sectional semifinal Wednesday.

The Knights (23-13) tied the score twice, but could never take the lead against the Blue Thunder, who advanced to play either Rock Falls or St. Francis in the sectional championship.

“It’s that time of year (for close games),” Kaneland coach Brian Aversa said. “I think we started a little tight. We usually play pretty loose, but for some reason we were tight today.

That Smith kid did a great job keeping us off balance. He got a couple of strikeouts against kids who don’t usually strike out.”

“Huge, huge,” Belvidere North first-year coach Jeff Dobbertin said of Smith’s performance. “Lee has been huge for us all year and he’s really starting to come around and his pitching has been lights out.”

For the Knights, Joe Panico and Jacob Violett each went 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Nick Stratman hit an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.

Kaneland trailed by two runs heading into the seventh before Stratman’s one-out single scored Panico – but Strat-

man was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.

The Knights had positives and negatives from aggressive baserunning all game. Austin Wheatley scored on a firstand-third play and Matt Rosko scored from first base when Belvidere North centerfielder Jared Cantu briefly bobbled the ball on Violett’s RBI single to tie the score at 4 in the bottom of the sixth.

However, the Knights were also caught stealing twice to add to Stratman being thrown out at second in the seventh.

“That’s what we’ve been doing all year ... putting pressure on the defense,” Aversa said.

“They made the plays. We’re going to play our game and make somebody beat us at it.”

The Knights had runners on base in every inning against Smith, but couldn’t come up with a hit to take the lead.

“It just seemed like a tough ball to hit today for both teams,” Aversa said. “It just seemed like it was back and forth, but for some reason ... [Smith] had our number.”

In a 1-all game heading into the fifth inning, despite several baserunners for both teams, Smith hit a two-run double down the right field line. After Kaneland eventually tied it at four in the sixth, Smith hit another RBI double to the left-center gap and eventually scored on a throwing error by Kaneland first baseman Danny Hammermeister.

Despite Stratman being thrown out after his single, the Knights got the tying run on base when Jacob Bachio reached on an error but Rosko flied out to right field to end the game.

Kaneland starting pitcher Ryan David pitched five innings, allowing four runs on five hits with three strikeouts.

Steven Limbrunner took the loss after an inherited runner scored on Smith’s double off Colton Fellows in the top of the seventh.

The Blue Thunder (16-21) came into the postseason nine games below .500 before rattling off four straight wins – two of which have come by one run.

Horan steps down; ‘family first’

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com St. Charles East softball coach Kelly Horan told her team Wednesday afternoon she will step down after seven seasons in charge of the Saints program.

After East’s season ended with a 4-1 loss to Conant in Monday’s Class 4A Conant Regional championship game, little did most people know that it also would be Horan’s last game as coach.

Although the decision was not made verbal until Wednesday, Horan said it was not a spur-of-the-moment decision.

“I have always preached since I first took over: family first, school/work second and softball third,” Horan said. “I think my husband and I knew this was going to be [my last year] prior to this season.

Nothing about this is easy, but it’s absolutely the right decision for my family and I.” Horan, 33, said she had been lacking in the first two areas, as a teacher, but more importantly as a mother to her two children. Horan’s decision will allow her to spend more time with son Brady,

“My dad taught me how to play catch, and chased me around the house … and still does,” Horan said with a laugh. “I want to be that parent to my kids, and that is a big reason for this decision.

Teaching is one, but family is something that weighed on me considerably.”

Her decision is not something Horan took lightly, having a successful tenure in charge of the East softball program. She finished with a record of 174-74-3, winning two regional championships, the first of which came in the 2013 campaign, a season in which the Saints finished as the Class 4A state runner-up.

Horan also was named the Illinois Coaching Association’s Coach of the Year that season, as well as in 2009.

As successful as her teams were, there are few things she will miss more than the players and families she has made relationships with over the years.

“If I told the kids that running through a brick wall would help them win… they would do it,” she said.

“To share a sport that I have loved forever and watch these kids share that same passion means the world to me. It means so much to have met and shared so many memories with all of the players and great families that have supported us year in and year out.”

Horan shared one such memory of a team she will never forget.

“A Saturday morning, the coaches and I showed up to practice to see a note left by the girls,” Horan said. “The note said: ‘Coach, we got here a half-hour early and couldn’t find you, so we all went to breakfast.’ Little did I know that they were all hiding, watching mine and my assis-

She summed up her coaching with her final thoughts on stepping down.

“I just feel I’m practicing what I preach,” Horan said.

Chapman leads St. Francis past Glenbard South

By MATT LE CREN editorial@kcchronicle.com LOMBARD – The strike zone St. Francis pitcher Emma Chapman had to contend with Wednesday seemed to be the size of a postage stamp.

That didn’t stop the senior from delivering the Spartans into their first sectional championship game since 2012.

Chapman allowed four hits, with only one reaching the outfield, and helped her own cause by driving in two runs as St. Francis beat Glenbard South, 8-4, in a Class 3A Montini Sectional semifinal.

The victory puts the Spartans (24-4) in Saturday’s sectional final against Kaneland, where they will attempt to win their first sectional ti-

tle since 2005 and second in school history.

“I thought the umpire was very consistent but he had a tough strike zone and I think both pitchers were working hard,” St. Francis coach Ralph Remus said. “But he was consistent so we knew what we got.”

The Spartans got a gem from Chapman. She gave up one run through six innings until the Raiders (24-9) scored three times on the last play of the game.

Glenbard South loaded the bases on a hit batter and two walks. Tricia Weigand grounded a two-out single to right field, where the ball was bobbled. The throw home failed to get the second runner but the Spartans trapped

“It was a really tight strike zone, so I was just trying to hit my spots as best I could and it was really good defense behind me that allowed me to keep going,” said Chapman, who walked three and fanned two. “They were a good-hit-

ting team and I knew they were going to hit the ball, but I knew if I hit my spots maybe they wouldn’t get huge hits. It worked.”

Chapman (16-3) kept the Raiders off balance by using a variety of pitches.

“Emma was good,” Remus said. “I was particularly happy that she started using the changeup more today, which I think is going to make her that much more effective. And she knows I’m happy with that.”

Chapman was happy with the support she received from her teammates.

The Spartans knocked out 14 hits, chasing Glenbard South starter Ashley Cohen from the game after scoring two runs in each of the first

two innings.

After the Raiders cut the lead to 4-1 in the third, Chapman lined a two-out, bases-loaded single down the line in right to score Fiona Summers and Shelby Winkelman in the fourth to break the game open.

“They kept saying, ‘This girl hits right side,’ and [Glenbard South pitcher Taylor Carli] was throwing a drop curve outside, so I knew that I had to take it to right,” Chapman said. “My coach said before, ‘You have to get on,’ and I did my best and it worked out.”

Carley Pasquale and Janie Smith paced the St. Francis attack with three hits apiece, while Ali Dittrich and Amanda Imbrogno added two each.

Seitelman sparks Vikes: You almost needed one finger for every floor position to count off each of the Geneva boys volleyball program’s landmark accomplishments this spring.

“This is uncharted territory for us,” Vikings coach Annie Seitelman said after Tuesday’s season-ending, 2519, 25-19 loss to Lake Park in the Harlem Sectional champi-

onship match. “We’ve never had our program go this far in the postseason. Won our first regional championship this year, won our first sectional match, you know. So It’s great strides for our program this year.”

The Vikings point to Seitelman, a former junior-varsity coach who earned a varsity promotion when predecessor K.C. Johnsen left the program, as part of the catalyst.

“This is her first year coaching varsity, and I think she was a big difference-maker this season,” senior outside hitter Nick Buseski said.

Seitelman cited Johnsen’s influence – she also coached under him during girls season before taking that varsity post, as well – and the diligence of a senior class that includes Ethan Roesch, Spencer Sharpe, Luke Will, Sam Wulfkuhle and Buseski.

“I’ve had most of these kids either as freshmen or sophomores,” Seitelman said, “so it’s kind of bittersweet to have

some of them for the last time.

We graduate a great group of seniors. They’ve done so many things for this program, and they’re leaving it in much better shape than when they came in.”

Serve it up: St. Charles East and North boys tennis athletes and coaches stretched a state tournament tradition into its second year when they dined together after the opening rounds at various District 211, 214 and 220 courts.

“We figure we spend all year beating up on each other, so we celebrate the guys making state by having dinner with one another,” Saints coach Rob Livermore said.

Added North counterpart Sean Masoncup: “It’s sort of a nice bonding thing for the two schools.”

Athletes awarded at Cougars fans relish promotion year-end banquet KANE COUNTY COUGARS

GENEVA – Batavia teenager Peter Jackson shares a name with a film director steeped in tales of fantasy.

You wonder if the man who presided over “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies could have conjured the Cougars’ One Cent Wiener Wednesday promotion.

The first of five such nights this season descended on Fifth Third Bank Ballpark for Wednesday’s series opener against the Bowling Green Hot Rods, with the lesser-known Jackson among those assembling spare change and loosening his belt.

The 13-year old, an eighth-grader to be at Rotolo Middle School, bought three of the first hot dogs sold once gates opened at 5:30 p.m., an hour before first pitch.

“I kind of knew about it,” Jackson said, “but I didn’t

know it was today. … I thought it was a pretty good deal.”

One might even say it cut the mustard.

Although Jackson admittedly went the “just plain” route for each of his hot dogs, a condiment stand including ketchup, mustard, relish, tomatoes, pickles, onions, jalapenos and sauerkraut awaited fans’ indulgences.

And yes, the hot dogs were regulation size, not something you might find in a pig in a blanket.

“These are not teeny, tiny knock-off wieners,” Cougars owner Dr. Bob Froehlich said last month.

Cougars officials limited spectators to 10 hot dogs per transaction. The club has a $5 minimum credit card limit per purchase, meaning patrons had to buy at least $4.90 worth of other concession food if they didn’t have an actual – not figurative – dime in their pockets.

Jackson, for one, enjoyed

the novelty of using his pennies for something of substance.

“I have some at home. It’s nice just to pay tax, but that’s all I use them for,” he said.

The Kentucky-based Hot Rods, perhaps in solidarity with their state’s friend chicken heritage, did not pander to the promotion and temporarily amend the second word of their nickname.

Nor did Bowling Green manager Reinaldo Ruiz move right-hander Enderson Franco (almost Frank-O) up in the rotation.

Instead, Franco will start tonight when the series continues with hot dogs priced at several pennies more.

Other One Cent Wiener Wednesdays are set for July 8, July 22, July 29 and August 12.

The Cougars reported it would cost 58 cents to purchase one hot dog for each player involved in Wednesday’s game plus two coaches and two umpires.

Taylor Keating learned the heptathlon was a numbers game shortly after becoming a heptathlete for the Marquette women’s track and field team.

Turns out there were far more hefty figures in the equation than “hepta,” the Greek prefix meaning “seven.”

A Geneva product who began her prep career at Rosary, Keating came to Marquette from Carthage College with a base in hurdling and the high jump. As for the shot put, 200 meters, long jump, javelin and 800 meters, she made like a Golden Eagle and winged it.

“The throwing stuff is something they hope they can teach you and maybe score points, as well, but there’s more points in the hurdles and high jump,” Keating said.

Keating competed at NCAA Division III Carthage College as a freshman in 2012-13, finishing 11th in the heptathlon in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin meet.

time letting my almost 17-year-old daughter out of my sight. When she walks home from school, I call to make sure she’s OK, then call her again minutes later when I estimate she’s home. The whole time I worry.

I check on her wherever she is, whomever she is with, and if she doesn’t answer a call or text, I panic. I have on a few occasions raced home from work in the middle of the day only to find her napping, and I’m upset to the point that I’ll start crying. I realize this isn’t healthy for either of us.

Years ago, a little girl in our town, the same age as my daughter, was taken from her home and murdered. I think that plays a part in why I act so irrational. Some of her friends will be driving this summer and I can only imagine there will be trips to the beach and whatever else. anyone, male or female, relishes the idea of being old – particularly in American society – unless they consider the alternative, which is death.

Men and women handle signs of aging in different ways. Fortunes have been spent on beauty products, with varying degrees of success. Board-certified dermatologists and plastic surgeons can minimize the signs of aging, but they can be expensive. Others accept that beauty comes from within and opt to do nothing to change their appearance.

Talking to people in their 70s, 80s or 90s about the changes they have experienced and the lessons they have learned as they grew older is a good idea. But if it doesn’t change your feelings, talk to a doctor because a good one can work “miracles.”

Follow these tips to keep your dentures in tip-top shape Dear Doctor K: My dentist says it’s time for dentures. What should I know before I get them?

Dear Reader: Tooth loss can profoundly affect your health and well-being. The more teeth a person loses, the more difficult it is to chew food properly and get needed nutrients. Missing teeth can also make speaking difficult and make you self-conscious about your appearance. (On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put an illustration of our teeth and their functions.)

Nothing can fully take the place of healthy, natural teeth, but several replacement options are available. One such replacement is dentures.

Partial dentures are an option if you need to replace several teeth in a row. Full dentures tend to be used in older individuals who have lost many of their natural teeth.

Full dentures last five to 10 years. Their fit changes over time as the shape of the jawbone changes. If your dentures are uncomfortable, let your dentist know. He or she can make adjustments and repairs in between replacements.

Take proper care of your dentures to keep them looking good and fitting well. The following tips will help: • Wash dentures in cold or warm – not hot – water.

• Try not to drop dentures on a hard surface, as they break easily.

Handle them over a basin of water or a soft towel.

• Wash dentures daily with denture cleanser, hand soap or mild dish liquid. Avoid abrasive cleaners. This is really important.

If dentures are not washed daily, they can become infected, usually with fungus and bacteria. When their surfaces are infected, and you wear the dentures, they can pass the infection to the lining of your mouth.

(I once had a patient whose dentures had made the roof of his mouth (his palate) so red, raw and sore that he needed to be hospitalized and given intravenous antibiotic treatments.)

• Clean denture surfaces by

scrubbing thoroughly with a special denture brush or a hard toothbrush.

• After the adjustment phase, take your dentures out when you sleep to relieve pressure on your gums.

• When your dentures aren’t in your mouth, soak them in a denture cleaning solution or in water.

Don’t let them dry out.

• Brush your mouth – including your gums, palate and tongue – with a soft-bristled toothbrush every morning before you insert your dentures.

• Minor irritation and soreness should fade away as you get used to your dentures. Call your dentist if discomfort persists, or if you notice staining, bad odor, color changes or tartar deposits on them.

• Don’t try to adjust or repair your dentures on your own.

Dentures can improve your nutrition, your speech, your appearance and your happiness.

Sometimes it’s great to be tall Dr. Wallace: I enjoy reading your column, and I am not usually one to comment on articles in the newspaper, but after reading the letter from the 13-year-old girl who was being called “Giant” and asked, “How’s the weather up there,” I just had to comment. I know how she felt when she was 5 feet 9 inches tall and the tallest girl in school, as well as taller than most of the boys.

I’m 23 years old, and growing up in a small town in South Carolina I was also kidded about being tall – they called me “giraffe” or “beanpole,” but I now have the last laugh.

I am happy and proud to say that I’m now a highly paid fashion model. I’ve had my photographs in many fashion magazines.

I must give thanks to the good Lord for giving me a body that measures 6 feet tall. The model agency I signed with only hires females that range from 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet 1 inch in height.

So if you young girls feel self-conscious about your height, remember to stand tall. Never slouch or try to make yourself shorter by dressing a certain way. Be proud to be tall like I am. In today’s deal, how should South play in six spades after West leads the heart queen? What would declarer do if his club 10 were the club nine?

In the auction, there is no need for South to gallop skyward; his two-spade rebid is forcing. North’s jump to four spades promises at least four-card support, but requires no points and denies a first- or second-round control (no ace, void, king or singleton). Then, South’s final bid is a gamble, but who would do less?

The simple line is to take two club finesses, a line with a 76 percent probability of success.

Declarer has two dummy entries with the spade nine and a heart ruff. However, it is better to have a 100 percent line available.

South wins with his heart ace, draws trumps, cashes his top diamonds and heart king, and ruffs his last heart in the dummy. Then declarer plays a club to his 10 (or queen). Here, West wins with his jack (or king), but what does he do next?

West is endplayed. If he returns a club, it is into South’s tenace. Or, if West leads a heart or a diamond, declarer ruffs in the dummy and discards a club from his hand.

Finally, note that the same play works with the club nine instead of the 10. South covers East’s first club as cheaply as possible.

The charming 1930s-era brick home we bought in Washington eight years ago had exactly what we were looking for: enough space for our small family with room to grow, plus a neighborhood with great schools.

The only problem? The master bathroom.

The minute I saw the gray Formica vanity, the inch-thick gray tiles that lined the walls and the “hammered glass” shower door of our master bathroom, I promised that it would be the first remodeling project on our list.

Instead, it was nearly last.

Why? Sticker shock. As many homeowners quickly learn, gutting and remodeling a master bathroom can be as expensive as remodeling a kitchen.

report comparing the cost against the value of renovations says a mid-level bathroom remodel this year in Washington costs $17,000 for a typical 5-by-7-foot space.

Only 74 percent of that can be recouped at resale.

For an upscale bathroom remodel of the same size, there’s less of a return. The average cost is $55,000 – yes, really – and one should expect to recover only 64 percent.

For years, my husband and I did the math and balked.

Let’s face it: In most cases, remodeling a bathroom is about aesthetics. If the toilet flushes, the sink isn’t creating water damage and the shower is structurally sound, there are plenty of reasons to keep it as is. (Besides, it’s not as though many visitors see the master bathroom.)

frame the walls and find new spaces, for example, to build a shelf or a bench in the shower.

One designer, Elizabeth Boland of Design in a Day, says her favorite tip is to create a built-in cabinet in the wall space, between the frame.

“This is a secret everyone should know,” Boland says.

She recommends building the cabinet as tall as possible in the wall. And she has done it often enough for clients that she even buys the same mirror from Ikea to create the look.

In our bathroom, we didn’t have enough room to adopt Boland’s secret cabinet idea, but we did find a tiny space to build a niche in the shower wall so we finally had room to put our shampoo and soap.

• Lighting and tile. Nothing opens up a space like new lighting. Many old homes were not built with a light above the shower, which my contractor, Neil Jannsen, highly recommends for all of his bathroom remodel clients. Initially, some clients are surprised at the suggestion of shining a light over the space, but it can add depth to the room and make it look larger.

“I don’t think you can have too much lighting,” said Jannsen of Jannsen Design.

“Some folks have gotten used to older bathrooms being so dark. But once you get it in there, you realize how it shows the whole bathroom off. You want it to show off all the tile and things you’ve put your money into.”

With lighting, one has to also consider wall color and tile selection; in a small bathroom, the tile can easily dominate the color scheme. Several designers recommended looking for classic designs, such as subway tiles, or ones that are oriented horizontally, particularly in the shower. This helps to create a visual effect that the shower is larger than it is.

Jannsen also recommends using tile all the way to the ceiling in a bathroom, which creates a similar effect, and trying not to “do too much” in terms of adding extras in the shower. For example, many bathroom showrooms today have tile showers that feature a horizontal strip of “accent” tile that is different from the rest of the bathroom tile, often glass or a unique design to introduce another tile color or pattern.

In our bathroom, we also chose white Arrabescato marble for the shower in large rectangular shapes – 22 inches wide by 12 inches long – and had them installed horizontally from floor to ceiling. This created the appearance that our shower wall was made almost like a large piece of marble, and with the light, made the shower appear taller than it really is.

The other luxury was that we added radiant heated floors in the bathroom, which can get very cold with the large window we have in it, especially in the winter.

Although it’s only been a few weeks – and for sure, the cost per-square-foot is something I don’t like to think about – I love the new look.

Instead of being the eyesore of the house – a room that my husband used to avoid – even he admits it’s a dramatic improvement.
