Police seek information about diamond scam Police seek information

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Police continue to seek information about a diamond scam involving a man and a woman. Police said they targeted a woman at a store in St. Charles.

Bill Tynan, a St. Charles crime prevention officer, said a woman was approached by a man this month at Jewel-Osco on Prairie Street in St. Charles.

The man identified himself as Oscar Lopez. He has been described as about 40 years old, 5 feet, 7 inches tall with a heavy build and black, curly hair.

Lopez told the woman he had found a diamond at a cleaning job where he worked and said he needed a ride to the Meijer store on Randall Road in St. Charles, Tynan said. A different woman was nearby and stated she also needed a ride to Meijer, and the victim drove both Lopez and the other woman to Meijer. The second woman is described as being 35 to 40 years old, 5 feet, 2 inches tall and 110 pounds with black hair.

The unknown female said she would take the items into Meijer to be appraised by a friend, and she returned to the vehicle and told Lopez and the victim the largest diamond was valued at $10,000, Tynan said. She then re-entered the Meijer and said she had sold the diamond for that value, and the victim then dropped the other woman

off across the street.

The victim then drove Lopez to her house, where she paid him $20,000 for the remaining diamonds and traded her wedding and engagement rings for a fifth diamond and a coin, Tynan said.

Meijer does not do diamond appraisals, Tynan said.

The victim later had the diamonds appraised and found they were worthless, he said.

Tynan said the department hasn’t heard from any other residents who have fallen victim to this type of scam.

He urged residents who have been victims of a scam to contact the department’s investigation section at 630-443-3743.

“If we do end up finding the offenders, that really helps us

in going to court and showing how many people have been victimized by these offenders,” Tynan said. “Sometimes, people are completely embarrassed, or they don’t want their families to know, so it might go unreported. And we’ll never know about it.”

He said the department is aware of organized, nationwide, traveling diamond scammers that specifically target Hispanic and Asian women in retail establishments. Tynan said residents need to remain alert when out in public.

“It’s all about being aware of your surroundings and paying attention to what is going on,” Tynan said. “Unfortunately, scammers are everywhere, and they are constantly changing their routines and what they do and who they target. It all goes back to being alert.”

Police are seeking information about the incident.

St. Charles bicyclist mourned after death in DeKalb County event

alagattolla@shawmedia.com Those close to him described Jeff Ruhl as active and athletic. His stepdaughter described “magical” trips to Michigan, with Ruhl teaching everyone how to water ski and making those on the visit feel relaxed.

“You can’t not have fun when you are around him,” his stepdaughter, Meg Cronin, said, adding, “he is such an awesome guy.”

Ruhl, a 56-year-old St. Charles resident, died Sunday while participating in the Bike MS Tour de Farms event in DeKalb County. DeKalb County Coroner Denny Miller said Ruhl was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital, where he later died.

Joe Kresach was in the event. Kresach, a friend of Ruhl’s, is on the same team – LoBaMa. He said all seemed well with Ruhl at the event,

adding Ruhl was in good spirits and was laughing. Kresach said there is a steep hill coming out of the second rest area, and several in his group were able to get past the hill, but Ruhl was a little behind. Not long after that, they heard that Ruhl got to the top of the hill and collapsed. They went back to try and help their friend.

“We were just trying to call out to him to bring him back,” Kresach said.

The Greater Illinois Chapter of the National MS Society released a statement after Ruhl’s death.

“Our sympathies and support are with the family who is coping with the grief of this unfortunate tragedy,” the statement reads. “Jeff was a long-time participant in Bike MS and member of team LoBaMa, and we plan to honor his memory by retiring his jersey number next year.”

Ruhl was married to Pat Ruhl, and he had three stepchildren, Cronin, her sister, Erin, and brother, Kyle. Cronin said he also was close to a nephew, Devon Horne. She said there will be a gathering in Ruhl’s honor from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at The Office, 201 E. Main St., St. Charles.

“He lived a really quality life, and he cared about every single person in his life and did his absolute best to give them as much love as possible,” Cronin said.

St. Charles Public Library makes home deliveries, visits senior facilities

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Public Library is celebrating more than 40 years of stepping out and providing services beyond its traditional walls.

The library has an Outreach Services Department that makes bimonthly visits to eight local senior facilities, maintains four community book swaps and makes regular monthly deliveries to more than 20 homebound patrons, according to David Kelsey, the St. Charles outreach services librarian.

The library’s outreach services officially began Jan. 16, 1973, with a delivery to the Hotel Baker Retirement Home, according to the library’s archives. The first Special Services librarian was appointed in August 1975.

The library, at 1 S. Sixth Ave., St. Charles, went from having a librarian use her own vehicle to deliver materials to having a three-person Outreach Services Department with its own van. The outreach department in all serves about 300 patrons each month and circulates 2,000 library materials, Kelsey wrote in an email.

“Our motto is that we deliver!” Kelsey wrote.

Libraries mail books for free to homebound patrons through the U.S. Postal Service, Kelsey wrote.

Most libraries in the area offer outreach services – the Batavia, Geneva, Maple Park, Messenger (North Aurora) and Town and Country (Elburn) public libraries have some type of home delivery or use the mail service, according to their websites.

St. Charles resident Jan Metz, 76, said she is used to seeing Hintz in her apartment with one of the carts. She enjoys checking out the works of Kristin Hannah, John Grisham and James Patterson from the library.

“I can’t go to the library anymore easily with [my walker], so it’s really been a good service for me – I read a lot,” she said.

Metz said another resident

in her apartment complex told her about the service. St. Charles resident Rosemary Caldwell, 78, heard about the service from one of her friends who works at the library.

Like Metz, Caldwell said it is difficult for her to use a walker around the library.

She recommends anyone with mobility issues use the outreach program.

“The people have all been courteous and lovely to talk to,” Caldwell said. “They also try to make appointments that are convenient for you.”

The outreach services departments can deliver to residents of any age in the library district who can’t come to the

library because of any temporary or permanent disability, Kelsey wrote.

The need for outreach services likely will grow as the number of elderly residents rise in the area, Kelsey wrote.

He cited statistics from the Administration of Aging that project 72.1 million people 65 or older living in the country by 2030, more than twice the

number in 2000.

No matter the population, Kelsey said he and his staff will be prepared as ever to be an extension of the library for residents.

“We enjoy getting to know our patrons and developing relationships with them,” Kelsey wrote. “We feel blessed that they let us into their lives.”

Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening made the suggestion during the forum that Pace buses travel on Main Street instead of Wilson Street to take advantage of a relatively new Pace shelter that recently was installed on Randall Road between Main and Wilson streets. Groh said he could see how that would be beneficial.

Sitting beneath red, white and silver ceiling decorations in a community room at Hunt Club Village retirement complex in St. Charles, the 14 singers and their piano accompanist, St. Charles resident Sue Allen, performed for about 25 guests. Lynn Haidle, 83, gave a little history for each song.

“Let me tell you something about ‘The Star-Spangled Banner,’ ” Haidle said. “It hasn’t always been our national anthem. ... It wasn’t until Congress decided they would do a resolution for it March 3, 1931.”

Before ending the program with “God Bless America,” Haidle said songwriter Irving Berlin wrote it in 1918 while serving in the army. He set it aside, but revived it in 1938 with the rise of Adolf Hitler in Germany.

Haidle said the group performs about four concerts a year. She invited audience members to join them, as rehearsals start again at 6 p.m.

“Not because you sing well,” Haidle said, “but because you sing with enthusiasm. … It’s supposed to be fun.”

BATAVIA – Pace riders soon could see more frequent and later evening service.

Pace held a public forum Monday at the Batavia Government Center to explain the proposed changes, which would take place by the end of the year. The proposals are the result of a survey last year of Pace riders and nonriders.

“Longer hours were very important to current riders,” Pace senior planner Michael Groh said. “We’re always looking for comments from our customers.”

The revamped schedule would include service to new destinations, such as the North Aurora Town Centre shopping center and buses operating every 30 minutes on most routes. In addition, bus service would operate until at least 8 p.m. on all routes in the area.

Changes also are proposed to Pace Route 802, which operates via Lake Street between the Aurora Transportation Center and the Geneva Metra station. Major destinations include Waubonsee Community College, the Batavia Public Library and Geneva Commons shopping center.

Neva was a member of St. Charles Country Club where she loved to play Golf and Bridge. She also enjoyed music and was a avid pianist.

She was born December 9, 1943, in Evergreen Park, IL the daughter of Jayne (nee Dunkel) and George Lynch. Kerry was united in marriage to John M. McNeely on October 16, 1965, in Richton Park, IL. Kerry had a passion for life. She was an avid collector Native American memorabilia, art, cookbooks and pigs. bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva residents might soon be restricted in how many garage sales they may have in a year, as aldermen at a special Committee of the Whole on Monday considered complaints about continuous sales that irritate their neighbors.

After a discussion of policy, aldermen asked staff to create an ordinance limiting garage sales to three a year and three days per sale.

The city does not have a limit on how many garage sales a resident can have in a year, aldermen said.

Aldermen said they liked an ordinance in Arlington Heights, where neighbors report on neighbors who abuse

the limit and that spurs code enforcement to step in.

The issue arose in the 4th Ward where a resident complained of a neighbor having too many sales, officials said.

“A constituent asked that I put the issue before the council,” 4th Ward Alderman Ron Singer said. He would not identify the resident as he read from her letter. “She says … there is a person on my block who has an estate sale almost every weekend last year and this has already had three, including the Geneva citywide garage sale.”

Singer’s constituent wrote their street has a lot of traffic during her neighbor’s sales, making it hard to get out of their driveways.

“It is a nuisance, for sure,” Singer said, according to the

constituent’s letter. “If someone is having a sale that frequently, they should open a storefront in town or sell via eBay or Craigslist.”

Fifth Ward Alderman Tom Simonian said he supported the idea of limiting garage sales, but leaving it up to residents to monitor those having

too many sales.

“If we have a complaint, we can address it at that time and respond accordingly,” Simonian said.

Illinois safety-net hospitals at risk

To the Editor: Across Illinois, safety-net hospitals serve some of our most at-risk communities. They are a lifeline for small towns, the uninsured and are providers of essential care in underserved neighborhoods.

To use these life-saving hospitals and the care we provide sick children and the elderly as leverage in a political fight is unconscionable. Balancing the budget and trying to fix our state’s finances at the expense of health care for our most vulnerable citizens will not make Illinois more compassionate or competitive.

Gov. Bruce Rauner has proposed a $750 million cut to hospitals across the state, which disproportionately will affect safety-net hospitals. The severity of these cuts would force a reduction of services to many of our neediest residents and likely close some facilities altogether.

For the past several years, safety-net hospitals have worked in partnership with the state to transform health care services for the better. The governor’s proposed cuts would derail this progress and put the health care of millions of Illinoisans at risk. We did not elect our state lawmakers to slash services for working families, children and senior citizens.

We urge legislators to reject the governor’s proposals and stand up for the families and communities they represent.

A fair week’s work

THE WASHINGTON POST The idea that workers should get time-and-a-half pay for overtime – that is, a 50 percent boost in hourly pay for any hours they put in past 40 a week – has been embedded in U.S. law since the New Deal.

Less easy to establish, however, have been the precise criteria to determine who’s eligible and who’s not.

The country’s roughly 75 million hourly workers automatically are included. For the rest of the country’s employees, however – those who get salaries – eligibility for overtime has been defined two ways: In terms of total pay and in terms of job content. At present, salaried workers are exempt from mandatory overtime if they make $23,660 a year or more, or (to oversimplify a complex rule) if their jobs contain even a modest degree of professionalism, authority or other “white collar” attributes. Those criteria were last adjusted 11 years ago during the

George W. Bush administration.

President Barack Obama has committed to update those Bush-era standards as part of his push to fight inequality and boost the middle class.

Republicans and business leaders are resisting, arguing more mandatory overtime pay will raise costs and kill jobs. The pushback might help explain the Labor Department’s delay in publishing a proposed regulation, but we’re told it’s due any day. When it finally arrives, expect plenty of hyperbole, both pro and con.

The truth is at most 10 million workers would be directly affected if the government roughly doubled the current eligibility threshold to $51,000 or so, as progressive advocates are urging President Obama to do. That’s neither a panacea for inequality nor a menace to employers, especially because much of the effect would be to compensate for past inflation. Still, like any wage rule, this one does pose trade-offs and could have unintended

consequences. Research suggests these would be modest; mainly, employers probably would have to share available work among more workers. But the impact of changes in overtime rules has been much less thoroughly studied than the minimum wage itself, in part because it has not been adjusted as often.

An upward adjustment in a salary threshold that hasn’t increased since 2004 (the last increase before that was in 1975) hardly seems precipitous. The main goals of any new policy, however, should be to increase the degree to which overtime eligibility is determined by objective criteria – such as income – and to decrease the role of subjective criteria – such as job duties.

The former clarify standards; the latter make them fuzzier and subject to litigation. Old distinctions between blue- and white-collar work are swiftly eroding in today’s knowledge-based service economy. A modern federal labor policy should reflect that fact.

‘A very dear friend to college golf’ Rich happily maintaining ambassadorship

“Some people build places like this so they can be alone and become exclusive; he’s built it for him to be inclusive,” Heppler said. “And that’s the difference of how people look at life. Some people do things just for themselves, really nice things for themselves. Some people do really nice things for themselves, and they share it with other people. And that’s Jerry Rich.”

Heppler delivered what some might consider graduate-level analysis on the eve of the Palmer Cup, a Ryder Cup-style match-play event pitting the top American- and European-born collegians.

In August, another wave of highly regarded players will pass through RHF as part of the Western Amateur. Heppler, who coached the American Palmer Cup team, figures

hosted a major college championship.

Heppler, who saw the grounds before the NCAA announcement as a member of the Golf Coaches Association of America, hopes to return with a strong contingent of Yellow Jackets.

It’s likely his European Palmer Cup counterpart, Jean Van de Velde, will be too busy with his overseas exploits to return, but he pledges to follow RHF from afar.

To be sure, Van de Velde’s initial explosure with the entreprenuering Rich left a marked impression. Before the Palmer Cup, he only had read about Rich, who built three leisure holes on his property in 1989 before expanding the course, now a staple darling of Golf Digest magazine, about a decade later.

Arizona State senior Jon Rahm, a Spaniard and the top player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, relished his RHF experience, as well.

Learning under Van de Velde for Team Europe, Rahm also capitalized on the chance to play the national championship course for what he hopes is his first full year as a touring professional.

“My dad told me that if I wanted to study and play golf at the same time, Spain was not the place,” Rahm said.

“The way to do it was, obviously, if you’re good enough, to get a scholarship and go to a good school to hopefully get as good as you can and practice. Yeah, my dad is the one who got the idea in my mind. And he was absolutely right.”

Rahm’s career arc began a world away from RHF, but the optimism intersected with Rich’s mission this month.

“It’s the time around him and beginning to realize the love he has for golf and amateur golf,” Heppler said.

“For me, when you come here, that’s where it all starts. It’s the hospitality. It’s the care.

It’s the concern. It’s the attention to all the details.”

Players needed for Knights’ new club Organizers hope to play in IHSLA

editorial@kcchronicle.com They say a mother would do just about anything for her children, and in the case of Anne Shaw, it couldn’t be more true with lacrosse and her sons.

Anne Shaw and her husband, Ron, are the co-presidents of the recently founded Kaneland Lacrosse Club.

Their sons, Nick and Chaz, will play for the club.

The Knights became the latest Tri-Cities area school to offer lacrosse, joining Batavia, Geneva, Marmion, St. Charles East and St. Charles North.

“We’ve had discussions about doing this for awhile, especially since our son, Nick, will be a junior this fall,” Anne Shaw said. “Lacrosse is the one sport he truly loves, and we wanted him to have an opportunity to play for his high school team.”

Nick Shaw and fellow juniors Joe Bittenbinder, Tyler Kraus and Jacob Sussland have been playing high school lacrosse the past two years, but never have had the chance to play for their school. They briefly played on the Geneva freshman team at the start of high school, but were removed from the team because of IHSA protocol regarding player eli-

gibility.

Since then, they’ve played for Southwest Lacrosse, a team comprised of players from Plainfield and Oswego. Next spring, if their roster numbers are strong, they will play a regular schedule at Kaneland.

“It’ll be pretty exciting if the team works out, especially because we don’t know if Southwest will still be around next year,” Sussland said. “It will be nice to get a chance to play with all my friends and to teach some new ones about the sport because I know there are many who don’t know how to play.”

Kaneland assistant principal Mike Rice has helped make the Kaneland Lacrosse Club a reality, but it truly has been the work behind the scenes from the Shaws and the rest of the recently chosen volunteer board that’s kept the ball rolling.

“Mike’s been really supportive and helped us get the approvals we needed to start the club,” Anne Shaw said.

“We’ve kept working at it.

We’ve written bylaws and a mission statement, and we’re doing what we can to become a nonprofit group.”

One of the biggest next steps for the club is to get players. They hosted a meeting at Kaneland right before the school year ended, but during the chaos of finals week and daydreams of the impending summer break, that message might not have reached all potential players. They also need to find a coaching staff.

In July, the Kaneland Lacrosse Club is inviting those interested to come out to one of its three free round-up clinics.

They will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

July 13, 20 and 27 at Blackberry Creek School, and newcomers are welcome to give the sport a try. Email kaneland.lacrosse@ gmail.com, and they’ll arrange to have a lacrosse stick for you to use.

This is the ideal time for Kaneland High School students to try this rapidly growing sport, the Shaws believe.

“I think a lot of people will love it after trying it,” Nick Shaw said. “I love the pace about it. You’re constantly moving, unlike in football, where you take 30-second breaks between plays, and with baseball you’re waiting for the guy to come to the plate.”

There’s also a River City Clinic on July 13 to 15 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Burgess/Norton Field in Geneva for only $30.

The Kaneland club also is expected to have a booth at Elburn Days in August and might have one at the Sugar Grove Corn Boil in July.

Typically, a new club will participate in the Illinois High School Lacrosse Association.

That’s what Kaneland hopes to do next spring, but whether it has enough players and other vitals in place to do so has yet to be determined.

“We’d like to play there, but it all depends on whether or not we can get our numbers up. By November, we should know,” Anne Shaw said.

“We’re excited that we’ve gotten this far, though. It’s really a great sport. It really builds on community and integrity, and I think it’s a good sport for the boys to play.”

As long as they don’t play ball in the house. No mom likes that.

Roy Radke returned to Geneva District 304 last month to complete his final weeks of high school.

A four-year hiatus didn’t do wonders for his hallway profile, but a mounting hockey career took care of that.

“I didn’t know too many kids at Geneva High School, but a lot of them kind of heard I was coming in and what I’d been doing the past couple years, so they were pretty excited,” Radke said.

If all goes according to plan in the next few years, Radke will have endeared himself to far more than the western suburbs.

The Blackhawks on Saturday selected Radke, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound forward, in the sixth round of the NHL draft, completing his transformation from fan to prospect.

His hometown team took notice in part after Radke’s 2014-15 season with the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League. Radke had nine goals and added nine assists in 64 games while developing a profile as a power forward with a penchant for getting physical in front of the net.

Is an antique “clobbered” Chinese vase a valuable Asian ceramic? Fifty years ago, if you were clobbered it meant someone beat you up. Recent auction catalogs have been describing porcelains using this word, and at an April 2015 Neal auction, a pair of very large “clobbered” famille rose porcelain vases sold for $4,780. The term clobbered has been used since the end of the 19th century. It meant patched or worn. In about 1970, we were appraising an estate, and the family had a 17th- or 18th-century, bright-yellow Chinese plate with blueand-white decoration that they were donating to an art museum. We took it to the museum expert, along with other Chinese porcelains that were being donated. He took the plate and much to our surprise, he climbed on his desk, held the plate close to the ceiling light fixture and said, “Clobbered. We can’t accept it.” The light showed that the plate was old with original blue-and-white decoration. But sometime, probably in the 19th century, someone in Holland, England or some other European country enhanced the salability of the plate by adding the yellow glaze. Porcelains that were too plain or slightly damaged were given added color by filling in the blue and white lines of a flower or adding a new border, flowers, animals, birds or even landscapes. Yellow, red and green enamel was added and “burned in” so it was permanent. Today, that clobbered piece would be bought for its decorative value and sell for far less than an original multicolored plate but more than a similar modern plate. *** Q: I have a champer chest that was

brought from China right after World War II. It is heavily carved on all sides with figures, some on horses, and trees.

All around the border are carved flower heads and overlapping leaves. It also has a shaped brass clasp. It’s 23 inches high, 41 inches wide and 20 inches deep. Can you tell me what it might be worth?

A: Your chest is a camphor, not champer, chest, so called because it’s lined with camphor wood. In the 18th and 19th centuries, camphor chests were used to carry tea, silks and porcelain from China to Europe and America. Camphor wood has a fresh scent that is like eucalyptus, and is a natural repellent against moths.

The outside of your chest probably is teak or rosewood. Sometimes the chests were plain, but usually they have ornate carving with ships, warriors and dragons. Camphor chests also were used to store blankets, linens, clothes and papers. They were popular in American homes in the 1930s and ‘40s, brought home by Americans who lived in China or sailors who were stationed in Asia.

Camphor chests made in the 20th century sell for $50 to $400, depending on size, carving and condition. Chests from the 19th century sell for lots more. Yours probably is worth about $200 to $300. *** Q: I have an old tin photograph of Jessie James, his brother, Frank, and an unidentified man. It’s been passed down in my family from my great-greatgrandfather. The story goes that he was given the picture by Jessie James. It’s in excellent shape. Is it valuable?

A: Collectors are interested in pictures of the Old West and of outlaws, but the value depends on rarity and authenticity.

The only known picture of Billy the Kid sold for over $2 million dollars in 2011.

A: Your golf figures originally held blended Scotch whiskey made by Whyte and Mackay of Glasgow, Scotland. In the

1950s, many whiskey companies found that putting their liquor in decorative collectible bottles increased sales. Historical, political, sports and other whimsical figures, entertainers, animals, birds and even vehicles and events have been commemorated as whiskey decanters.

Interest peaked in the early 1970s. Your set of three Duffers was designed and modeled by Bernard Hasenstab in 1969.

They were made by California Originals, a ceramics company that operated in Torrance, California, from 1955 to 1982.

There is little interest in figural whiskey decanters from the 1960s and ‘70s today. They are offered in online shops for about $20 but rarely sell. Your bottles may have greater appeal and value as a crossover collectible to a golf enthusiast.

Rapid strep tests aren’t perfect in diagnosing Dear Reader: In a recent column, I responded to a reader’s question about acute pharyngitis – inflammation of the throat caused by infection with bacteria or viruses.

I was taught that diagnosing and treating a patient with a sore throat was not complicated: The sore throat was caused either by Group A streptococcus (“strep,” a kind of bacteria) or by a virus. If a throat culture showed strep, you treated it with penicillin. Simple. But in my view (some colleagues disagree), it’s not that simple.

The risk from an untreated infection with Group A strep is much lower today in the United States than it was 70 years ago.

That means that the value of treatment is reduced. But the chance of side effects from the treatment – antibiotics – is not reduced. Penicillin can cause side effects ranging from a bad rash to a life-threatening drop in blood pressure. A doctor never wants to prescribe a treatment when its risk is worse than the risk from the disease.

If a doctor knows for sure that a patient has a strep throat, the value of antibiotic treatment today is still greater than the risk. The problem is that an-

In addition, it is hard for a doctor to know for sure that a patient has a strep throat without a positive throat culture. An eminent pediatrician, Dr. Burtis Breese, once gave his colleagues some wise advice: “If you are entirely comfortable selecting which patients with pharyngitis to treat with penicillin, perhaps you don’t fully understand the situation.”

As I mentioned in the recent column, the results of a throat culture take one to two days.

It’s sometimes hard to reach the patient when the results return. For that reason, doctors had long yearned for a test that would reveal whether the patient had a strep throat while he or she was still in the doctor’s office.

About 30 years ago, rapid strep tests were developed. The latest versions of the test are fast: Results come back within 15 minutes. And the tests appear to be highly accurate in de-

tecting Group A strep. So, this seemed like a major advance.

But, again, it’s not that simple. First, the rapid tests are quite accurate, but not perfect. Second, we’ve learned that other kinds of strep besides Group A strep, and other kinds of bacteria entirely, can cause acute pharyngitis. The rapid strep tests don’t detect any of these bacteria. Admittedly, we don’t yet have solid evidence of the value of treating these bacteria.

Third, sometimes Group A strep live in our throat without causing any disease: There is no value in killing those strep.

Finally, even when we test for all known bacteria, viruses and other microbes, we still can’t find a cause of sore throat in about 30 percent of patients.

So, there’s still a lot to learn about a medical problem that causes more days lost from work than all labor disputes combined. Yet we’ve cut federal funding for medical research by 20 percent over the past decade.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and recently met the most wonderful guy at a friend’s wedding reception. So far all we have done is have lunch together. I’d really like to see this fellow on a regular basis, but he is 20 years old and I’m afraid my parents won’t allow me to date him because of his age.

He is only two years and 10 months older than I. He is interested in a prelaw course of study and so am I. I want my parents to meet Richard. But I’m afraid to tell them he’s 20 because they might tell me I can’t date him.

Would it be dishonest of me to invite him to meet my parents, then after he leaves, tell them that he is only 1,035 days older than I am?

Dr. Wallace: My two best friends and I like to study together. It makes it less boring and much more enjoyable. My friends and I study together every Tuesday and Thursday for about two hours.

We always rotate at each other’s houses.

Dear Nameless:

When I was teaching, I encouraged students to study together whenever possible, especially before an important test.

Harvard University seems to agree.

Researchers there investigated group study and reported that it was an ideal way of reinforcing what has been taught in class.

The report suggested that group study could be organized one of two ways: Individual members can have responsibility for a single subject, or everyone can be responsible for all subjects, with the group functioning as a discussion group in which the members help one another understand key points and question each other in preparation for tests.

The biggest flaw with group study is people’s tendency to spend time on non-academic matters. The major problem with studying alone is that there’s no one to help you with something you don’t fully understand.

When friends study as a group, the maximum number should be four.

What should South not overlook when in three no-trump after West leads a heart in answer to his partner’s opening bid?

When you double for takeout at the one-level, partner makes a minimum advance in a suit (showing 0-8 points), and you rebid, you indicate a very strong hand, in principle one with at least 18 high-card points. You are telling partner that despite his weak hand, game is still possible.

Here, when South jump-rebids two no-trump, it promises the values for a two-no-trump opening: a good 20 to 22 points. North, with only four points in his heart doubleton, might well pass, but the vulnerable game bonus is a powerful lure, akin to the songs of the sirens.

South starts with only five top tricks: two hearts and three clubs. He needs four diamond winners. At first glance, that requires a 2-2 split, but there is one other possibility.

Declarer should take the first trick with dummy’s heart king, then lead a diamond. Here, the ace appears and South is home.

But if East plays low and declarer’s king wins the trick, South continues with a low diamond, hoping for the even break.
