Great Western Freedom 4 Run and Walk

History comes alive at library

ST. CHARLES – The Great Western Freedom 4 Run and Walk will be at 8 a.m. Friday at the LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, 37W370 W. Dean St., St. Charles. The event will benefit the Lazarus House. Advance registration for runners and walkers takes place at www.signmeup.com and will close at midnight Tuesday. Advance registration for the run is $28, with a $3 discount to Chicago Area Runners Association, Fox River Trail, Performance Running and Dick Pond Fast Track Racing Team members. Registration for the walk is $20, and for children ages 9 and younger the walk is free. Event-day registration is permitted from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. and is $25 for the walk and $35 for the run, with no discounts offered. Colonial Cafe breakfast sandwiches and Starbucks tea and juice will be available for participants and spectators before and after the race. Donations to the Lazarus House will be accepted. The first 400 registered runners and walkers will receive a free T-shirt and goody bag. Forms to collect pledges for Lazarus House are available at www.lazarushouseonline.com.

Youth Police Academy in St. Charles ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department has extended the deadline for applications to its Youth Police Academy until Thursday. The second annual Youth Police Academy will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 7 through July 11. The program is available for kids ages 13 through 16. The academy is intended to showcase careers in police and fire work and will encourage teamwork and self-esteem. Topics that will be covered include steps to becoming a police officer and firefighter, personal safety, self-defense, Internet safety, bullying, crime scene evidence collection and more.

Because of funding from the St. Charles Youth Commission, participants will be certified in CPR by the St. Charles Fire Department free of charge. The class of participants will spend a day at the Kane County Judicial Center for classes led by state’s attorneys. The class will be limited to the first 25 registrants, who must be St. Charles residents and/ or attend a District 303 school. Preference will be given to residents within city limits. Registration packets can be picked up at the St. Charles Police Department, St. Charles East and St. Charles North high schools, and the main offices of Wredling, Thompson and Haines middle schools.

‘An Intimate Evening with Mark Dvorak’ ST. CHARLES – The Steel Beam Theatre will present “An Intimate Evening with Mark Dvorak” on July 11 at the Steel Beam Theatre, 111 W. Main St., St. Charles. Tickets are $40 for adults and include dinner, dessert and admission to the concert. Dinner is at 6:30 p.m., and the concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Dessert will be served during intermission.

According to a press release, Dvorak was named “Chicago’s Troubadour” by radio station WFMT last year and was the 2013 recipient of the Folk Alliance Region Midwest Lantern Bearer Award for his contribution to the field of folk music.

“Do not try this at home on your own,” he told a crowd of about 130 people at the Batavia Public Library. “Some people have and got electrocuted.”

Chicago actor RJ Lindsey brought Franklin to life in the program “The Amazing Dr. Franklin,” part of the library’s Sundays on Stage series. Franklin’s famous kite experiment, where he attached a key to a kite during a thunderstorm in 1752, proved that lightning was electrical in nature.

He also is known for numerous inventions, including bifocals.

“You are very welcome for the bifocals,” Lindsey said. “I was tired of taking off and putting on glasses.”

Along with presenting the program in character, Lindsey also answered questions from the audience as if he was Franklin. Brent Beacham of Batavia asked Franklin if he was a deist.

“Yes, a deist,” Lindsey said.

“Deists believe there was a God that started everything and then he took a vacation.

Beacham said he stumbled upon the program after bringing a couple of friends to see the library.

“I really enjoyed it,” Beacham said. “He brought life to the character. He was very entertaining.”

Franklin is one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and Americans on the Fourth of July will celebrate the adoption of that document.

Franklin later signed the U.S. Constitution in 1787.

In character, Lindsey gave his thoughts about the founding

of the U.S. “It is only as good as the people who are a part of it,” he said.

“The people will determine whether or not it fails.”

This is the third year of the library’s Sundays on Stage program.

“We’ve received good attendance for most of our other programs,” Batavia reference librarian Lee Blakley said. “It has proved very popular.”

The next program on July 27 is “Tribute to Marilyn Monroe,” followed by the Fabulous 50s on Aug. 24. All programs begin at 2 p.m.

Children try to stay afloat at cardboard 3 boat race at Swanson Pool in St. Charles

ST. CHARLES – The kids navigating S.S. Pillbug – a cardboard boat specifically designed to cross Swanson Pool in St. Charles – were optimistic Saturday as they prepared to compete against other kids in the Sink or Swim Cardboard Boat Race.

They wanted to know how many laps they needed to complete.

“They said they are going to paddle to the end and chant to the end,” said Marsha Buvary, whose children Albert, 10, and Anna, 7, navigated the boat with Brady and Brett Barnes, 9 and 11, respectively.

But their handmade boat – along with most others – didn’t make it across the width of Swanson Pool without the kids somehow in the water.

Melissa Weaver, aquatic supervisor with the St. Charles Park District, noted that two boats made it across.

“I would call that a success,” she said of the new park district activity.

Another Sink or Swim Cardboard Boat Race is set for July 12 at Otter Cove Aquatic Park.

Participants are limited to two construction materials – cardboard and duct tape.

Boats cannot exceed 10 feet in length and must be capable of holding at least one person but no more than four.

Saturday, 8-year-old Hollister Schneider – who earned the nickname Dracula for his vampire costume – worked on his coffin-shaped boat for several weeks with his father, Mark Schneider.

His father said such elements as displacement, center of gravity and symmetry factored into the construction.

“There’s some science involved,” he said.

Although he capsized soon into the race, the St. Charles boy was rewarded for his efforts. He earned the Vogue Award, which recognized the team with the most spectacular or attractive boat.

“This will make a great memory,” his grandmother Sandy Schneider said.

Young St. Charles quintet Baltimore-bound

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com St. Charles residents Jacob Collins, Justin Collins, Liam Drummond, Carson Nenni and Lucas Segobiano helped their Fox Valley Lacrosse club team to a 77-0 record in the past two seasons.

The quintet is bound for Baltimore as a partial result.

Those five players, all incoming freshmen – Drummond and Segobiano at St.

Charles North, the others at St. Charles East – have earned invitations to this week’s Brine National Lacrosse Classic at one of their sport’s premier cities.

“They’re very known and prominent for their lacrosse up east, but our coaches think we have the potential to hold our ground with them,” Drummond said.

Drummond, Segobiano and Jacob Collins will be midfielders for their All-Midwest

Region age group team, while Justin Collins and Nenni help the cause on defense. There are eighth-grade, ninth-grade and varsity teams participating.

More than 1,900 lacrosse athletes from around the nation are set to take part in the event, which includes showcase games, seminars and training.

Nenni’s father, Michael, coached the freshman group’s Naperville-based club team

and is looking forward to being a spectator with other parents. Although he didn’t play lacrosse himself, Nenni warmed quickly to the sport as his three sons did after discovering it in an afterschool enrichment program.

Seeing how some of St. Charles’ top young lacrosse talent competes especially excites him.

“They have great character, they work their butts off, their parents are fantastic

at getting the kids back and forth,” Michael Nenni said.

Although their club profile certainly helped the St. Charles group gain recognition, players still had to try out during the winter at The Dome at Rosemont.

Tryouts consisted of drills and scrimmages, with the ultimate prize the chance to go to Baltimore.

“That was like the biggest news I’ve ever gotten,” Drummond said, “lacrosse-wise.”

Shea McClellin wins the award for “body transformation” of the 2014 Bears offseason, but there’s another linebacker with a new number who looked a bit different at OTAs and minicamp: Khaseem Greene.

The second-year Will linebacker “came into camp a bit heavy” last summer, General Manager Phil Emery said during the season.

Greene, who measured in at 241 pounds at the Combine, started four games last season in Lance Briggs’ absence. He had 28 tackles and an interception against Minnesota, but, like fellow rookie Jon Bostic and the rest of the defense, struggled.

Looking to make that “second-year leap,” Greene slimmed down in the offseason, working out in Cincinnati with trainer Clif Marshall and NFL players Luke Kuechly, Rey Maualuga and Mohamed Sanu.

He also was in Florida with Brandon Marshall and other Bears teammates.

“I think the biggest thing for me was just my nutrition, watching what I put into my body and getting to a weight where I really want to be at and feel real comfortable at, which allowed me to fly around and move a little differently than I did last year,” Greene said as minicamp wrapped up at Halas Hall last week.

Greene has worked as the second-team weak-side linebacker behind Lance Briggs.

“I like to play behind Lance,” he said. “He’s taught me a lot, showed me some things.”

Greene also will work to solidify his roster spot by participating on special teams.

In addition to getting his nutrition in check, Greene had an on-field trait he fo-

Greene agreed with his position coach that he is getting back to the physique he showed off at Rutgers, where he was a two-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year.

He sounds like a player with a chip on his shoulder heading into training camp “This offseason has been really good for me because I’m comfortable now with the scheme, what’s going on with the defense and also with myself, knowing that I belong here,” he said. “It’s pretty much now or never.

It’s time to show everyone else I belong here and silence any doubt, or anything that goes on that I don’t know about or that I’m pretty sure I can imagine is going on, because it’s always going to happen.

“Just being able to run around my teammates and show those guys I can be accountable to them as well, it’s been pretty fun.”

Assuming Greene makes the 53-man roster, Week One against the Bills will have special meaning for him.

Greene changed his number to 52 to honor his former Rutgers teammate, Eric LeGrand, who was paralyzed on the field in October 2010 and has been an inspiration to many in his recovery.

TORONTO – It might take a while for the White Sox to be good again. You can be sure Jose Abreu hopes it won’t be long.

The offensive centerpiece in the Sox’ retooling plan, Abreu isn’t used to being on losing teams. So his patience might be tested while management tries to build a team that is good for years to come.

“He likes to win, man,” Cuban-born catcher Adrian Nieto said. “He said he doesn’t like to lose. The Cuban teams he was on were always winning teams.”

From the way he prepares, studies and works, it became obvious early on that Abreu, 27, wants to be great. On days when the Sox aren’t great, he doesn’t look around the room; he looks in the mirror.

“When we lose, he feels like he didn’t do enough, so he puts a lot of pressure on himself,” Nieto said. “I try to tell him, ‘Hey, it’s everybody, not just you.’ ” Abreu wouldn’t be the first person to change after becoming a star, but success isn’t new to him. Teammates respect his modesty despite what hitting coach Todd Steverson calls “the magnitude of what he’s created for himself.”

“You have this many homers [25] before the [All-

Star] break and so much fanfare and publicity,” Steverson said. “People want to see him. You’re not going to go get popcorn when he’s coming up, that’s for sure.

When he gets his name called out, you want to watch and see what happens. And that’s the same for everyone on the bench, including myself.”

Abreu drove in the first run of the Sox’ 4-0 victory Sunday against the Toronto Blue Jays with a single to left against Mark Buehrle in the third inning. The hit extended his hitting streak to 14 games, the second-longest in the majors.

Despite not hitting a home run during the first week of the season and missing two weeks on the disabled list, Abreu is on pace to equal the Sox’ record of 49 homers set by Albert Belle in 1998.

Paul Konerko predicted in spring training that Abreu, who is batting .279, would hit for average, too. He said this week that Abreu’s batting average will climb as his strikeouts decrease and his walks increase.

Steverson said Abreu’s strikeouts stem from eagerness.

At the midpoint of the season, the buzz surrounding Abreu, who leads the American League in slugging percentage, hasn’t let up.

I use it for gas and household or family needs. She uses it for personal things such as buying dolls for her collection.

I was informed that I will no longer be able to use the card after the last statement we got. (I had spent more than $100 on gas for the month.) I feel I am using the card for the purpose for which it was intended.

Buying things that aren’t for the family but for her personal enjoyment wasn’t our agreement.

I’m not sure how to approach her about this without it becoming an argument. She has a spending problem.

I recently found a job, so I contribute financially to the household. This is something that has been thrown in my face every time we talk about money. I want to see the statement so I can compare who spent how much on what, but when I ask to see it, she gets defensive. – In The Dark In Michigan Dear In The Dark: If the credit card is in your name, then you are responsible for anything that is purchased with it. The statements are addressed to you, and you have a right to see them.

That your fiancee is refusing to show them to you is a sure sign that she has something to hide.

That’s why you must take the card away from her to ensure that she isn’t putting you into a financial hole you won’t be able to dig yourself out of. And because the lady can’t seem to control her spending, I’m urging you to think long and hard before marrying her, because after you do, you will be responsible for her debts.

In today’s deal, though, the hard part is spotting the second chance that declarer has available to make his six-spade contract. What should South do after West leads the heart queen?

North’s three-diamond rebid promises some points, usually five or more.

Declarer has 11 top tricks: six spades, two hearts, two diamonds and one club. The first thought is probably to hope that West has the diamond queen. Then South would draw trumps, cash his diamond ace, and overtake his diamond 10 with dummy’s jack. That gets the job done if the finesse wins, but leaves declarer with no chance when East has the diamond queen.

Now look at the clubs. If one of the two finesses works, South can get a second club winner. But two finesses require two dummy entries. Where are they?

After drawing trumps, South should lead his diamond 10 and overtake it with dummy’s jack.

If East wins with his queen, declarer can claim because he has at least three diamond tricks.

Alternatively, if East ducks his queen, South can take the first club finesse. Then, in a moment, by overtaking the diamond king with dummy’s ace, declarer is back in the dummy for that second club finesse.

A priori, one finesse is a 50-50 shot, but one of two finesses succeeds 76 percent of the time.
