Annette Theobald, owner of Eddie Gaedel Pub and Grill, announced the eatery will host a birthday party Monday to honor Gaedel. A resident of Spokane, Washington, is headed to Elburn to establish the Eddie Gaedel Pub and Grill as the second chapter of the Eddie Gaedel Society.

Elburn eatery to celebrate Gaedel’s 90th birthday KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – An Elburn eatery has planned a full day of festivities to honor its namesake – Eddie Gaedel.

Eddie Gaedel Pub and Grill will celebrate Gaedel’s 90th birthday. Gaedel, who stood 3 feet, 7 inches tall, was famed for appearing in one Major League Baseball game, in 1951. The restaurant got its name because it is in a small space. It is at 117 N. Main St. in Elburn.

Annette Theobald, one of the establishment’s owners, announced an all-day cele-

bration of Gaedel’s birthday on Monday. There will be an appearance by Tom Keefe, the founder and president of the Eddie Gaedel Society.

Keefe is an avid Gaedel fan who lives in Spokane, Washington. Keefe will honor the pub as the second chapter of the Eddie Gaedel Society.

Theobald said those who attend will receive birthday treats.

Keefe said he is calling it “spreading the Gaedel gospel.”

Keefe also issued a news release, in which he stated “Elburn plays a significant role in the Gaedel story.”

Keefe has said he is eager to meet Wayne Byerhof, a former Elburn police chief

who was 19 years old when Gaedel pinch-hit for him in an exhibition game in 1951.

Byerhof is to appear at Eddie Gaedel Pub and Grill at 6 p.m. to share his personal account of the game. Byerhof was playing center field for an American Legion team in Elburn, against a team from Maple Park.

Byerhof said Gaedel walked in his plate appearance, and Byerhof then was put back in to run for Gaedel.

Gaedel died in 1961.

Aldermen voice concerns about increasing land-cash fees Some aldermen concerned proposal could stifle development

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting voiced concerns about increasing landcash fees for developers.

State statute allows for municipalities to impose landcash fees on developers. The city’s current land-cash ordinance has not been revised since May 2000.

Tuesday’s meeting was a joint meeting with Batavia

School Board members. Batavia plan commissioners have recommended approving an increase in land values on a stepped basis over three years. The current land value of $100,000 an acre would increase to $130,000, 90 days after approval of the ordinance, according to the recommendation.

The land value would then increase to $160,000 at the first anniversary of the ordinance approval, and to $190,000 at the second anniversary. Bata-

via Community Development Scott Buening said the city’s current land-cash ordinance lags behind Geneva and St. Charles.

He said the increases would put Batavia on par with Geneva. Buening said the city could potentially see another 2,300 dwelling units – both single-family and multi-family units – in the coming years.

“That is a direct impact on the Batavia School District,” Buening said.

Third Ward Alderman

Kyle Hohmann voiced concerns that an increase in landcash fees could stifle development. In response, Buening said Geneva and St. Charles continue to see new development despite having higher land-cash fees than Batavia. “[Developers] are going to pass that off to the home buyer in most cases anyway,” Buening said.

Other aldermen were concerned about the proposed jump in land-cash fees.

“I don’t think tripling the price in three years is the way to go,” 2nd Ward Alderman Alan Wolff said.

Wolff had proposed increasing the land value to $130,00 the first year, $150,000 the second year and $175,000 the third year. Only five aldermen supported that proposal, with eight aldermen rejecting it.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said the issue of land-cash fees needs to be addressed in the face of potential growth.

He said he would like the school district to have revenue sources that are not on the backs of taxpayers.

Aldermen are expected to discuss the issue again at a future meeting.

Vignette Home Decor in Batavia to close its doors in August

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – After being open since 2009, Vignette Home Decor, at 1952 W. Fabyan Parkway, Batavia, is set to close on Aug. 2.

Michael Grudecki, Vignette’s president and founder, said he looked at several factors in deciding to close the store.

He said the store’s lease expires at the end of August. The store was next to Office Depot, which recently closed.

There also are several other vacancies in the shopping center, including a vacant Circuit City store that closed in 2008.

“Given what’s happening in the strip center, it seemed to make sense,” Grudecki said. “When we went to the retail model, is was more to give something a try. Primarily, we were always supposed to be referral based. And now, after being in the retail model, we’ve realized that over 95 percent of our business is still referral.”

He founded the full-service retail design firm and furniture retailer in 2007.

A SPECIAL SHOE FOR CECE Local shoe repair shop works to help injured pony

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ELBURN – As soon as a stall become available at Casey’s Safe Haven, a horse rescue facility in Elburn, Cece arrived in desperate need of care.

The 14-year-old pony had not been shoed correctly, said Daryl Paddock of Geneva, a volunteer at the horse rescue. That left Cece walking on the tip of her left hoof like a ballet dancer.

“By not doing the shoeing right, the pony’s tendons retracted,” Paddock said. “She was crippled.”

After the rescue group worked with Cece, the shoer made a special shoe for the pony to get her off the tip of her hoof.

“But that made her left leg longer and right leg shorter, and her shoulder blades were off,” Paddock said.

Volunteers improvised with a rubber pad and duct tape, but every time it rained, the homemade orthotic came off. Paddock reached out to Hossein Shakouri at Greg’s Shoe Repair, 722 E. State St., Geneva, to see if Shakouri could create an orthotic that would stay on and enable the pony to walk straight. The orthotic didn’t quite fit, but with some additional tweaking, volunteers expect it will after another fitting later this week, said Karen Davis, Shakouri’s administrator.

“He’s trying to use a combination of Velcro with elastic,” Davis said.

Shakouri has been in business in Geneva for 10 years, repairing shoes, purses, jackets, tents and luggage.

Before he came to Geneva, Shakouri made custom-made shoes in his native Iran for 25 years, David said.

“He is really creative at doing things with leather,” Davis said. “Most of the time, he can fix things.”

“The universe lines stuff up,” Balla said. “Here is this pony standing there … her leg looks completely deformed. They [the rescue] did dogs and cats, and had no room for a pony.”

Although a vet and horse shoer both advised the rescuers to put Cece down, they still called to see whether Balla would try to save her.

Balla agreed to try.

Balla said her vet and the horse shoer also advised Balla that Cece could not be saved without six months to a year of work and possibly

surgery – and they recommended she should be put down.

But Balla said she would not agree to that – not without trying.

“Cece could not even remotely straighten her leg, and her hoof was almost pointed backwards,” Balla said. “They’re all looking at me like I’m nuts. I’m not going to give up on this pony like everybody else has.”

So on Christmas Eve, she sat in Cece’s stall, cut the hair off the pony’s bad leg and started rubbing her special holistic concoction, Rio’s Relief Balm, on the horse’s leg.

“We try to do everything

holistically first,” Balla said.

“Drugs are a last resort, not a first resort. ... Four days later, the leg was straight.”

The vet was practically speechless, Balla said.

Balla and her rescue group continued with therapy on Cece’s leg, giving massages and stretching it. But having an orthotic to allow Cece to balance correctly on both legs is critical to the pony’s long-term health, Balla said.

Balla praised Shakouri’s generosity in donating his time and expertise to help Cece.

“God bless him,” Balla said. “He’s doing this out of the kindness of his heart.”

reduce the number and severity of injuries, according to the release.

ELBURN – A youth soccer organization and a traveling soccer club that each serve Kaneland-area children have joined forces under one name.

The Kaneland Youth Soccer Organization and the Kaneland United Soccer Club combined and relaunched in May as Kaneland United SC, according to a news release.

The nonprofit group has about 450 children across all its programs with 60 volunteer coaches, wrote Tom Guernon, the unified club’s director of marketing and development, in an email.

“This relaunch allows us to get rid of a lot of duplication, simplify how we operate and have one name in the community,” club President Sean Car-

Among the long-term projects for the group is the development of land in Blackberry Township that was bought by the Kane County Forest Preserve District in 2014.

The district will own the land, but through an intergovernmental agreement, township officials will develop parts of the property with sports groups, such as Kaneland United SC. No firm date has been set for work on the project, Guernon wrote.

“Our club has begun fundraising efforts and exploring available grants so that we are prepared for the financial commitments we’ll need to make for development and maintenance of the site,” he wrote.

At issue among many property owners is keeping an aspect of the current ordinance, in which owner consent is not necessary for a property to

be landmarked. The rewrite would require a two-thirds majority vote of the Geneva City Council in order to landmark a property without the owner’s consent, officials said.

The city has imposed this only once in 32 years to preserve the historic Riverbank Laboratories, built by George Fabyan, officials said.

“It is one tool in our tool box that is rarely used [but] may be used as a last resort,”

Community Development Director David DeGroot said.

But residents, such as Christine Bourdage, objected.

“Buy the property you wish to preserve,” Bourdage said. “I urge you to vote ‘no’ until owner consent is required.”

But members of Elburn’s Village Board Monday said they were reluctant to provide the green light, since they believe the property should be developed for commercial use.

Forest preserve district representatives spoke to the board members Monday night during a Committee of the Whole meeting. Drew Frasz, a member of the Kane County Board, said all members of the County Board also are forest preserve commissioners, and he was speaking on behalf of the forest preserve.

The property is at 1001 S. Main St., on the east side of Route 47, just south of Keslinger Road. It is the former Patten rental facility. Frasz said the forest preserve district would seek to buy the property as the new home for the district’s Natural Resources Department. Frasz said the facility would help the district’s restorative efforts. It also

Frasz came prepared with tax information. He said the property owners now pay $31,500 in taxes each year. He

said since the forest preserve is exempt from taxes, “that would go away.”

Elburn officials did not embrace the idea. Village President Dave Anderson mentioned the village last year allowed the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection Dis-

trict to begin the construction of its new station on Route 38, east of Route 47. He said that was meant to be a commercial area, and he was wary of allowing another potential commercial area to slip away.

Also, Anderson said he did not want to lose real estate

taxes.

Several trustees agreed.

Board member Bill Grabarek said he had “great respect for the forest preserve,” but he said the expectation was the property would be used for a commercial development.

“We could possibly shoot ourselves in the municipal foot,” Grabarek said.

Another board member, Dave Gualdoni, said “if that property were anywhere else … it would be a no-brainer,” but that the Route 47 property needed to be commercial. Anderson added “that location shouts commercial.” Trustee Jeff Walter said he “wasn’t a big fan of the fire district taking that prime property,” and he did not want to rush to approve this project.

Anderson did not close the door on the project, saying it could be considered if, perhaps, a project, such as a pedestrian bridge crossing the train tracks, could be provided.

Frasz said it was unlikely a project as large as that could be provided, but he said he was grateful the discussion can continue.

Gwizdak was honored by the McHenry County Chiefs of Police Association as one of its officers of the year in 2014. She was recognized for her actions and credited with helping to save the lives of two McHenry County Sheriff’s Office deputies during an incident that took place in October in Holiday Hills.

Two deputies had been shot when they were responding to a Holiday Hills house for a domestic call, and Gwizdak, along with fellow Island Lake Police Officer Gilbert Hueramo, pulled the deputies to safety.

Elburn still will be seeking another full-time police officer. That officer will replace David Wright, whose employment with the Elburn Police Department has been terminated. Wright, 53, of Campton Hills, was charged in April with 21 counts of sexual abuse. His next scheduled court appearance is June 19.

When a current or former public official is charged, usually an attorney representing the official quickly releases a statement defending his client. Yet no information has been made available about the identity of Hastert’s legal team.

Hastert is charged with scheming to mask more than $950,000 in withdrawals from various accounts – in violation of federal banking laws that require the disclosure of large cash transactions – and then lying to the FBI about it.

Over five years, court documents said, Hastert withdrew about $1.7 million in cash from his various bank accounts – at one point in 2014 delivering $100,000 a month to the person in question, known as “Individual A.” That individual’s identity remains perhaps the biggest mystery yet.

YORKVILLE – Back in the days when J. Dennis Hastert was a celebrated wrestling coach, before he left this town for power and wealth in Washington, D.C., he had a simple rule for success.

“No messing around,” recalled Carl Kick, 55, who wrestled for the former House speaker in the late 1970s, when Hastert was a social studies teacher and coach at Yorkville High School. Kick and other former students said Hastert applied that rule rigorously: no one-on-one practice sessions, no playing favorites – and no inappropriate contact in the wrestling ring.

Hastert, 73, was charged Thursday with violating banking laws and lying to the FBI in what authorities said was an effort to pay $3.5 million to an unnamed person to cover up “past misconduct.”

The alleged misconduct involved sexual molestation of a male student back in Hastert’s teaching days in Yorkville, a federal law enforcement official said.

The Associated Press reported his first court appearance has been pushed back to

Tuesday. It had been scheduled for Thursday.

Waubonsee CC event targets small businesses Workshop to be held Friday at Aurora campus AURORA – A workshop will be Friday at Waubonsee Community College’s Aurora campus that is geared toward promoting the economic growth of small and diverse businesses.

“The Make a Connection: Connecting Communities to Illinois Business Opportunities” event is hosted by the Illinois Department of Central Management Services’ Business Enterprise Program, and will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at WCC’s Aurora campus, 18 S. River St., Aurora.

WCC’S Small Business Development Center is helping put on the event.

Participants will learn how to register with the state and how to see what contract opportunities are available, Illinois Department of Central Management Services representative Meredith Krantz said.

“They will have a chance to network one-on-one with people who can give them guidance,” Krantz said. “Our goal is to help the businesses.

That’s our main goal. That’s why we go in the communities, so we can reach them.”

Workshop presentation topics include CMS’ Illinois Business Enterprise Program, which promotes the economic development of businesses owned by minorities, women, people with disabilities, and veterans through its certification programs; the Bureau of Strategic Sourcing on state agencies’ buying process; and the Procurement Technical Assistance Center for one-onone guidance.

Harriet Parker, manager of the Illinois SBDC at Waubonsee Community College, said the event will provide awareness to business owners who might not otherwise know about opportunities that are available to them.

“The state buys products

and services of all types, and a lot of small businesses are not aware that there are opportunities for them to become a vendor and supply their products or services to the state,” Parker said. “This workshop is to make them more aware of what the process is for doing business with the state, and also to introduce them to some resources that they might be able to avail themselves of to help them get certified as a woman- or minority-owned business or a veteran-owned business, and how you actually go about looking for contract opportunities.”

Parker said WCC held a similar event several years ago.

The college’s Small Business Development Center provides free services to local small businesses owners, she said.

Let’s go, Hawks Hockey is not a mainstream sport in the U.S. It’s not football. It’s not basketball. It’s not even baseball.

It’s Canada’s sport after all, although no Canadian team has won hockey’s ultimate prize – the Stanley Cup – since 1993. Hockey still is considered a niche sport, even in Chicago.

Because of that, you might be missing what’s going on in Chicago.

The Blackhawks open Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final tonight in Tampa, Florida. They are four wins away from their third Stanley Cup in six seasons. They have played in the Western Conference final in five of the past seven seasons.

They have two of the best young stars in hockey – Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. They have one of the best defensemen in the NHL – Duncan Keith. They have one of the best leaders in sports – Toews. They have the third-winningest coach in NHL history – Joel Quenneville.

Some hockey observers have suggested they have a dynasty.

Indeed, it is a special time for Chicago hockey.

That wasn’t always the case, however. Success and the Hawks haven’t gone hand in hand. Sure, they had a 28-season stretch of qualifying for the playoffs from 1970 to 1997. But before winning the Stanley Cup in 2010, the Hawks hadn’t won it since 1961.

After that playoff stretch ended, the Hawks qualified for the playoffs once in 10 seasons.

Nobody went to games. Nobody could watch home games on TV. Nobody cared about the Hawks.

That all changed when Rocky Wirtz became chairman of the franchise in 2007 and then hired John McDonough to be the team president. Since then, the Hawks have become a model franchise and have worked to grow hockey in Chicago by increasing exposure, catering to youth players and, of course, winning.

Regardless of sport, what the Hawks are doing is special.

So, whether you are a hardcore Hawks fan or a relative newcomer to hockey, take a moment to appreciate this run of success by the Hawks.

Kaneland’s run comes to end

By EDDIE CARIFIO ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Peoria Notre Dame girls soccer coach Matt Blackford wanted his Irish to put away Kaneland early, feeling if they let the Knights hang around they’d find a way to win.

It only took 65 seconds for Blackford to get his wish.

Notre Dame scored twice in the first 5:19, then, after Kaneland got to within one in the first half, scored less than eight minutes into the second half in a 4-1 win Tuesday in the Class 2A DeKalb Supersectional.

“It was imperative for us to get on top of them early,” Blackford said. “We talked to them for the past few days that just from the film we’ve seen that they want to stay in with

you, and if they stay in with you they get more and more positive, more and more confident. We wanted a goal in the first five minutes, and if we did that, we felt the game would go our way.”

The Knights (19-4) were playing in their first supersectional, while the Irish were in the Elite 8 for the 16th time in the past 19 years.

Coach Scott Parillo and his players said the Knights’ success came from staying relaxed throughout the sectional round, despite having never won a regional tournament before this year. But Parillo said the team came out nervous Tuesday.

“I got to be honest, I don’t know what happened. It did hit us,” Parillo said, followed by a big laugh. “I did everything I was supposed to do

– I wore the same socks, the same underwear, the same shirt, the same shoes, I ate the same meal that I did on Friday. Same bus driver. All the things we normally do we had in place.”

Kristen Slomba started the scoring for the Irish in the second minute, and Macy Martin added a goal with 34:21 left in the half.

The Knights got to within one when the ball got past three Notre Dame defenders in the box and was chased down by Ashley Crotteau and knocked in off the far upright.

But the Irish (18-5-3) reclaimed the momentum for good in the 48th minute on Martin’s second goal, and Bridget Schuler added an insurance goal for Notre Dame with 8:57 left.

“Nerves were really some-

thing today obviously at the beginning,” Parillo said.

“They got two in in the first 10 minutes. That’s rough. Then we settled down a little bit, we seem to be back in it, and we let another one in in the first 10 minutes of the second half.”

Blackford said Martin’s second goal was big for the Irish.

“When we got that goal, it seemed to relax us,” Blackford said. “You could tell that maybe we’d get another one, maybe two more if we kept doing our thing. I might have limited them a little too much at times going to the 4-5-1, but I felt like let’s just sit in with numbers. If we do that, we can win this game. And that’s kind of what happened.”

The Kaneland defense and goalie Emily Chapman entered the game allowing just

15 goals all year and just three in the playoffs.

Chapman still made eight saves Tuesday, including two right after Crotteau’s goal, diving to the left for one and punching a high shot up and over the crossbar.

“Those shots she had, I don’t care who you were,” Parillo said. “They could have had a professional goalie, you weren’t going to stop those.

They know how to hit the ball.”

Parillo called the season phenomenal and said he was proud of his team making the longest postseason run in program history.

“It’s a shame we didn’t win – gosh darn it, one win away,” Parillo said. “That’s the worst part, as you get closer and closer, it makes it worse to lose.

But it was a [heck] of a ride.”

was a great year for us,” senior middle blocker Sam Wulfkuhle said. “We really put ourselves on the map, and people are going to know about Geneva now.

I mean, we had a good regular season, but I think we really came alive in the playoffs and survived under pressure. It was a lot of fun.”

Lake Park (19-15) benefited from a versatile attack and a resilient block, seemingly striking just as Geneva recovered from a patch of uneasy streaks.

The Lancers’ Kyle Murphy smacked a match-high 10 kills.

Jack Fischer added six kills, while Austin Patchin had 18 assists.

Buseski (five kills) tied the second game at 11 with a kill, but successive Geneva hitting errors gave the Lancers a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. A 9-1 run saw Lake Park blend sprawling back line play with defensive tenacity at the net.

“We just knew we had to go up there, and if we didn’t block them, all we had to do was get a touch on it and the defense would do something,” Fischer said.

Just as it did in the first set, Geneva showed poise to make a dent in Lake Park’s advantage and prompt a Lancers timeout.

Ultimately, however, the Vikings lacked the consistency that highlighted their first three postseason matches.

“When all the pieces are clicking together, it makes it a lot easier, whereas tonight we just couldn’t quite seem to get on that same roll,” Vikings coach Annie Seitelman said.

A former junior varsity coach, Seitelman sparked Ge-

neva in her first season at the helm.

Several Vikings – including former JV pupils David Franz (12 assists) and Ethan Roesch (11 digs) – beamed about her growth as a leader, starting with a diligent routine between matches.

“She pushes us in practice,” Wulfkuhle said. “She really knows what to work on. She looks at the game. She’ll be like, ‘Oh, we need to work on blocking.’ So you know when you come to practice tomorrow, you’ll be doing blocking the whole time. It’s her transition to the game. ... She knows what to do, and it shows in the games.”

Jonathan Bishop paced Geneva with six kills. Luke Will, one of five graduating seniors, had 10 digs.

“The seniors, they have a ton to be proud of and a great legacy, what they started,” Seitelman said.

“I tried to tell them that this match doesn’t dictate our season or take away from any successes that we’ve ever had.”

Wolfe sparks St. Charles North into sectional final

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com ROLLING MEADOWS – After looking through the box score of Tuesday’s sectional semifinal game against Elk Grove, it wouldn’t appear Jordyn Wolfe did anything special.

But that couldn’t be further from the truth.

The sophomore outfielder’s hustle play and defense sparked the North Stars as they took care of Elk Grove, 5-0, to move into the Class 4A Rolling Meadows Sectional final.

Wolfe finished the day 2 for 4 with a stolen base and a run scored. Nothing eye-popping ... right?

Wrong.

Coach Tom Poulin said if there was a game ball for this

one, Wolfe would have been the lead candidate.

“Jordyn was lights out today,” Poulin said. “She genuinely loves to play softball and you can see it in the way she plays. She’s aggressive offensively and defensively.

She’s just an energizer and we were really Jordyn Wolfe happy with her play tonight.”

With her team already ahead, 1-0, on an RBI single by Sam Hausl, Wolfe led off the third inning with a single. She stole second on the next pitch, and although the throw barely bounced away, stood up, ran and slid head first into third safely.

Once at third, teammate Allison Moberg bunted and Wolfe darted home, sliding safely under a flip from Elk Grove starting pitcher Kylie Thomsen.

In the box score, it seemed like a simple play, but it was a big spark for the North Stars (28-5).

“I was ready to take home

on that play, but coach Poulin stopped me,” Wolfe said with a smile. “I just love to run ... that’s just my game. I know when I get on base my job is to just get around the bases and help my team out.”

Wolfe’s run was North’s second of the game, which helped starting pitcher Jillian Waslawski get into a groove on the mound.

Waslawski finished with just four hits allowed, and retired 14 of 16 batters during a stretch from the end of the first to the fifth inning.

Poulin thinks his freshman right-hander has continued to get stronger in her first postseason, with growing confidence in the defense behind her.

“She did a real nice job today,” Poulin said. “She pitched

to contact, and she had a great defense behind her. We feel confident in each position out there to make plays when they have to. Pitching and defense are going to take you a long way in this game, regardless of what you do at the plate.”

Wolfe caught four fly balls in left field Tuesday, none more impressive than her diving catch in foul territory to end the fifth inning when Elk Grove had a runner in scoring position.

As far as the offense went for North, it wasn’t one of their better days in Poulin’s mind, but the team found a way to do enough to book a meeting with Schaumburg on Saturday in the sectional championship.

MACHESNEY PARK – Walking through the gym foyer while fumbling for their car keys Tuesday night, a wave of Lake Park boys volleyball fans kept repeating “See you Friday.”

A 25-19, 25-19 sweep of Geneva in the Harlem Sectional championship match secured the Lancers’ third state tournament trip in four seasons, a run that begins Friday at Hoffman Estates.

Sometime soon, the Vikings would like to have such a pedigree, all the way down to those three little words. This spring figures to go down as a start.

“Hopefully, we can take a step to becoming like Lake Park. Hopefully, we’re able to do to the Geneva program what Lake Park had established long ago,” Vikings senior outside hitter Nick Buseski said. “It was a great run. It was really cool for us and the school to be able to get this far for the first time.”

Moments after their own well-traveled fans rose from the rickety Harlem bleachers to offer a season-ending standing ovation, the Vikings began appreciating the uncharted territory they covered in 2015.

Avenging a regular-season loss to Upstate Eight Conference River Division champion St. Nick Buseski Charles North last week, the Vikings (2117) won their first regional title. Their sectional semifinal victory against Rockford Guilford Annie thus marked Seitelman the five-yearold program’s inaugural win in that round, making Tuesday the Vikings’ maiden voyage to a sectional championship match.

Kaneland slugs way into title game

Paige Kuefler and Meg Cohrs hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning and the Knights smacked their way to an 11-5 win over Montini in a Class 3A Montini Sectional semifinal.

The No. 5 seed Knights combined for 15 hits against the top-seeded Broncos.

“I’m just fired up,” Kaneland coach Peter Goff said.

“There’s not much you can say about that. I’m just so extremely happy for these girls. … The couple of home runs set the stage right there. The key to the postseason is timely hitting and that’s what we’ve had.”

Kuefler said the mood of the dugout intensified after the pair of home runs in the

“That really lit a fire under our butts,” Kuefler said.

The Knights (22-8) had five players collect multiple hits and advanced to the sectional championship at 11 a.m. Saturday against the winner of Glenbard South and St. Francis.

Kuefler went 3 for 3 with a solo home run in the first inning and three RBIs and Cohrs went 3 for 4 with a homer and an RBI double.

Mary Lynn Clausen was 2 for 4 with a three-run homer in the seventh, Morgan Weber went 2 for 4 with a two-run double in the third and Morgan Sikon was 2 for 3 with an RBI. “We knew it wasn’t going to be 2-1,” Cohrs said. “We kind of figured it would be a slugfest, so we had to hit.”

The Broncos (28-6) entered the game outscoring their opponents, 27-1, in their two regional games, while the Knights hadn’t allowed a run all postseason.

Kaneland starting pitcher Angie Morrow allowed five runs on 10 hits, but two of the runs came on solo home runs in the bottom of the seventh.

The Knights also gave Morrow a 6-0 lead to work with after they scored four in the third.

“It’s a great feeling. We’re already on the pitcher, so you have that sense of calmness that we got this game,”

said Morrow, who improved to 15-2 in the circle this season.

Cohrs added, “We wanted to start out strong and it really kicked off the game in a good way.”

After the four-run third inning in which the Knights batted around the lineup, the Broncos cut the lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the inning.

Then Kaneland answered right back.

Kuefler hit a two-run single to right field in the top of the fourth to put the Knights up 8-2.

When Montini added another run in the bottom of the fifth, Clausen’s three-run home run to left field all but sealed the game.

“This is the most home runs I’ve ever had as a coach,” said Goff, who is in his first year with the Knights but has coached at Sterling. “The dingers they’re hitting are just unbelievable.”

Indians edge Spartans

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com DARIEN – With neither side able to generate many scoring chances, Tuesday’s Class 2A Hinsdale South girls soccer supersectional between St. Francis and Lemont had the feel of “whoever scores first, wins.”

And that is exactly how it played out.

With just less than 15 minutes left in the second half, the Indians’ Carli Bermele found the back of the net on a header off a corner kick to give Lemont a 1-0 victory. Lemont advanced to the state semifinals while the Spartans’ season ended with a record of 11-4-1.

“Give them a lot of credit,” St. Francis coach Jim Winslow said. “They were very methodical and kept the pace of the game to their liking. We could never get the pace to our liking.

It’s a credit to them.

“And that one corner, they took advantage of. Again, it’s a credit to them; they did a good job on that set piece.”

The best scoring opportunities for St. Francis came in the opening half, but shots by Erin Peck and Kendra Pasquale were saved by Lemont goalie Michelle Jerantowski, and a free kick went just over the crossbar.

As it has been the case for most of the season, the Spartans played with one senior starter, after losing standouts Taylor Van Thournout and

St. Francis’ Class 2A postseason path De La Salle Regional St. Francis 9, Kenwood 0 St. Francis 6, De La Salle 1 St. Francis Sectional St. Francis 3, Nazareth Academy 0 St. Francis 3, Wheaton Academy 2 Hinsdale South Supersectional Lemont 1, St. Francis 0 Corky Hart to torn ACLs in the spring.

“It was a challenge,” senior Regan Kasprak said, “but everyone on the team really stepped up. It’s a great group of girls. I got the opportunity to step up and be a leader and we have a lot of really good young players who made that job a lot easier.”

St. Francis started five juniors, two sophomores and three freshmen.

“It will be good. We have a lot who are coming back next season,” sophomore goalie Tammy Syron said, “and now we know how everyone plays.

We just have to continue to work hard together.”

Winslow agreed.

“We are losing four tremendous seniors, but we lost Corky and Taylor early in the season,” he said. “Everyone else is coming back. The future is bright and it was great to get back to this level.”

Hausl goes 3 for 3 to lead North • NORTH Continued from page 17 Sam Hausl led North offensively, finishing the day 3 for 3, driving in two of the five runs. Hausl said she has gotten more and more comfortable with her role as the DP, or the equivalent of a designated hitter in baseball.

“Every time I get up there, I just try to relax,” Hausl said.

“I try to focus and make sure I see the ball well to be able to help the team out. It seemed like today that each time we got a run or two, it helped Jillian pitch better and better.”

Abby Howlett provided some insurance, leading off the top of the fifth with her eighth home run of the season to dead center field, forcing Elk Grove (28-10) to make a pitching change.

North and Poulin know that even though it wasn’t the team’s best offensive game, that if other aspects of its game are strong, it will be a tough team to beat Saturday, and potentially beyond.

Kisch blasts Rockets into sectional title game

By PATRICK MASON pmason@shawmedia.com BELVIDERE – Emily Kisch just wanted to make contact to extend the inning, but what she did was send Burlington Central to the Class 3A Belvidere North Sectional title game.

The Rockets junior squared up Sterling pitcher Lexy Staples’ second pitch of the at-bat, and roped a two-out RBI double to deep left-center field to score the first run of the game. It turned out that run was all the Rockets would need as they beat Sterling, 2-0, on Tuesday in the sectional semifinal.

“All I wanted to do was put the bat on the ball and get at least a single to move the runner over,” said Kisch, who also earned the win. “I knew how fast [Courtni Neubauer] is and I trusted her to get around the bases and score.”

Neubauer, the Rockets’ leadoff left-handed slap hitter, drew a two-out walk to extend the third inning before Kisch connected on her lone hit.

Sterling (26-9) had five hits in the game, including one in each inning from the fourth inning on, but Kisch didn’t allow more than one hit in any inning, and induced a slew of popups and foul outs.

The Warriors had the signs of big innings, as they had either the first or second batter reach base in six of their seven at-bats, but didn’t have a runner in scoring position

until the sixth when Nadia Trujillo launched a one-out double off the left-center wall. “[Kisch] was bringing it with the speed, and we’ve been slumping a little bit lately so that didn’t help,” said Trujillo, who went 1 for 3 and caught Staples and reliever Maddie Corwell. “With the way we were swinging, it was so hard for us to get back in it.”

The Warriors made it interesting in their last at-bat in the top half of the seventh, as Emily Berogan entered as a pinch-hitter for Corwell.

Berogan, who studied Kisch all game while watching from the bench, smacked a two-out double in the right-center gap to breathe life into the Warriors.

But Kisch again came up big and didn’t allow a second hit, and kept the Warriors off the scoreboard. She wriggled away unscathed and struck out pinch-hitter Cheyenne Harrington to end the game.

“I just approach each hitter like they’re the No. 4 hitter, or dangerous,” Kisch said, “and stick to my plan. It worked out for us today.”

Cold sores caused by dormant virus suddenly awaken Dear Doctor K: I get painful cold sores in my mouth every couple of weeks. Why do I get them? And what can I do to make them go away faster?

Dear Reader: Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) Types 1 and 2. HSV Type 1 is the most common cause of cold sores. Type 2 more often causes genital herpes, but it can also produce cold sores.

HSV spreads easily from person to person; at least half of all adults are infected with the virus. Once you are infected with HSV, you have the infection permanently. The virus lies “sleeping” inside the nerves, causing no symptoms most of the time. In some people, the virus periodically “wakes up” and causes cold sores.

Cold sores most often occur on the edge of the mouth, usually in the same place every time.

That’s because the virus lives in the nerves that lead to that spot on the skin.

A cold sore usually begins with a slight tenderness or tingling. It develops into a painful, swollen red lump. During this time, the virus in the sore is highly contagious. After a

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff day or two, the area blisters, bursts and crusts over. Then the yellow crust peels away and secretes a clear liquid. It can take up to two weeks for the sore to heal.

The following conditions or circumstances seem to cause cold sores to reappear: anxiety, stress, sunburn, hormonal changes and physical exhaustion. Cold sores also often develop when you have a fever, which is why people sometimes call cold sores “fever blisters.”

Cold sores go away by themselves and most of the time don’t need treatment. There are two types of treatment. There are pills and ointments or solutions to put on the sore when it first appears, in order to make it go away faster. There also are pills to keep cold sores from coming back as often, for people who get them frequently.

The treatments (pills or ointments) to make cold sores go away faster have to be started at

the very first sign – the tingling or unpleasant feeling I noted earlier – before the skin starts to change. Even when treatment is begun early, studies find that it shaves off less than a day from what would have been the natural resolution of the sore.

The pills I generally recommend are one of two antiviral drugs, taken just for one day: famciclovir and valacyclovir.

The liquids that you put directly on the sore include acyclovir, penciclovir, benzalkonium chloride and docosanol. The latter two are available overthe-counter. Over-the-counter anesthetics like benzocaine can numb the skin and help relieve pain and discomfort. Applying ice at the first sign of a cold sore may also help shorten the duration or avert a full-blown sore.

Finally, when you do have a cold sore, keep your hands away from your eyes. HSV infection of the eye is rare, but it can be serious if it occurs.

When my parents divorced four years ago, my mother couldn’t make ends meet financially, so she allowed my father to have custody of me and my now 14-year-old sister and 15-year-old brother.

I’m now 17, and Dad has remarried and divorced again, and he has a new girlfriend, so he isn’t home much. It seems like I’m in charge of the family. I’m the babysitter, cook, housecleaner and food shopper.

My dad did allow me to get a summer job at a restaurant five miles away, and he drove me there and back every day, but now he says I have to get my own transportation or quit the job.

He was no help with my problem, so I called my mom and she talked to my aunt (her sister), and she said I could stay with her for the summer and I could walk to work from her house. So my mom, dad and my aunt had a meeting and it was decided that my dad would buy a car for me so I could stay home and get to work.

So far, this has not happened, and I worry about my brother and sister staying at our home without supervision. I love my job and will feel deprived of some independence if I have to quit. Yet I feel it is not good for my brother and sister to be home alone.

This is a difficult decision, and only you can make this choice, but my

An inexperienced player would bank everything on the diamond finesse, but a better player would see that he does not need it to win.

After taking the third trick, South cashes his second high trump, plays off dummy’s club winners, and ruffs a club in his hand. Let’s assume West discards a heart. Now declarer exits with a trump. West wins, but is endplayed. If he leads a diamond, it is away from the queen. If he plays a heart, South ruffs in one hand and sluffs his diamond loser from the other.

Finally, note that if West follows to the third club, declarer leads a diamond to dummy’s ace and ruffs the last club before, if necessary, playing a trump to West.
