NORTH AURORA – At Walnut Drive and Oak Street in North Aurora, brothers Toby and Matthias Wright had a prime parade-watching spot Sunday.

The boys – ages 2 and 5, respectively – were just blocks from where the North Aurora Community Parade stepped off, making them among the first spectators to get a shot at the candy that parade participants had ready to toss to the crowds.

As the fifth annual event neared its end, the boys had amassed a pile of Twizzlers, Tootsie Rolls, Smarties and, among other sweets, Dum Dums that lay next to their mother, Alissa Wright.

“I think we’re going to share it with our cousins,” the North Aurora woman said.

This was the first year Wright brought her sons to the parade – an event they worried they would miss because of grocery shopping earlier that day, she said.

“They’re so excited,” Wright said.

Organized by the North Aurora Mothers Club, the parade stepped off at 3 p.m. at Clock Tower Plaza on the corner of Randall Road and Oak Street and proceeded east on Oak Street before ending at North Aurora Island Park on the riverfront.

More than 40 units were scheduled to participate, including new entries such as “Star Wars” characters and the Jesse White Tumbling Team.

Council approves Keegan Aldermen approve as St. Charles police chief $7.5M in incentives BATAVIA

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles City Council on Monday unanimously approved a city leader’s recommendation to appoint James T. Keegan as the new police chief.

The council voted 10-0 in favor of City Administrator Mark Koenen’s recommendation to appoint Keegan, who was selected from a pool of 75 applicants.

Keegan thanked the council and city for their support after the vote, stopping to shake the hands of all 10 aldermen.

“I promise you I’ll do the best job I can,” Keegan said to the council.

He said it was a difficult decision to leave his current post as chief of the Streamwood Police Department, but decided to come to St. Charles because of the community’s rich history and quality programming.

Keegan said he currently lives in St. Charles Township and his two children attend St. Charles District 303 schools.

Keegan has worked for the Streamwood Police Department for the past 21 years and has served as police chief since 2011.

Keegan on Monday sat next to St. Charles Interim Police Chief Steve Huffman, who has led the department since December when former St. Charles Police Chief Jim Lamkin stepped down to become Schaumburg’s police chief.

Huffman was lauded for his work by 3rd Ward Alderman Bill Turner and St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina.

“You’ve done a great job – you are a wonderful asset to our police department,” Rogina said.

Keegan’s first official work day with St. Charles will be June 30, and he will be sworn in July 7, Koenen said.

RiverPark transferred to park district

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – RiverPark, the nearly two-acre riverside park north of Hamilton Street and east of River Lane, now belongs to the Geneva Park District, as aldermen approved its transfer Monday.

The park was started by a citizen initiative in 1999, when the city first bought the property for $1.9 million from Shodeen Development.

A citizen group formed a nonprofit which raised about $750,000 to develop the park, which now includes bike and pedestrian paths, amphitheater, mosaic tile pavers, a history wall, stone outcroppings, and is landscaped with native plants and shrubs.

It was turned over to the city in 2008 and the nonprofit was dissolved.

City officials said that transferring the property to the park district made sense because the city does not have the resources nor expertise to properly maintain the

property.

“We believe the park district is the best steward for RiverPark,” Mayor Kevin Burns said. “We are delighted to partner with our friends at the park district to ensure what was created by a citizens’ group continues on forever.”

Burns said $10,000 in maintenance costs for RiverPark was because of the mowing, fertilizing of the grass and replacement of the stones and pavers as they became worn or broken.

Between 2002 and 2008 the park received more than 95 vol-

unteer work days, more than 12,000 volunteer labor hours, 10,000 lunches donated by 29 local restaurants, officials said.

Some 50,000 prairie and wetlands plants were started from seed with more than 5,600 native plants and trees planted, officials said.

Geneva Park District officials previously acted to approve the property transfer.

In a related action, the city dissolved an intergovernmental agreement with the park district for maintenance of RiverPark because it is no longer necessary, officials said.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen on Monday approved giving Suncast Corp. up to $7.5 million in incentives in order to keep its manufacturing facility at 701 N. Kirk Road.

Suncast, which makes plastic storage and furniture products, employs about 1,200 people, making it one of the largest employers in Batavia, Batavia Public Works Director Gary Holm said. It also accounts for about 12 percent of the city’s electricity, making it the city’s largest user of electricity.

“They would have a big impact on every customer in town if they were to leave,” Holm told aldermen during Monday’s City Council meeting.

Holm told aldermen that Suncast had been considering leaving Batavia because of increases in the city’s electric costs. Aldermen in March voted 11-3 to approve an electric rate hike to ad-

dress the electric utility’s increased purchase power costs and the need for additional revenues.

Suncast has been looking at increasing production at the Batavia plant. As proposed, the city would offer Suncast the market-matching rate for growth in excess of the facility’s maximum 2013 usage.

“This will capture the additional activity due to the expansion,” Batavia City Administrator Bill McGrath said in a memo to Mayor Jeff Schielke and aldermen.

The city also would offer an incentive depending on power use to “guarantee” Suncast remains in Batavia.

“Over several years, depending upon power usage, we will rebate money to Suncast related to the costs of expansion, but primarily to remain here,” McGrath said.

The city also would offer some financial assistance with some of the system upgrade expenses associated with the expansion, he said.

“It will clear up misunderstandings about what the Clean Water Act is designed to protect,” said Cindy Skrukrud, chairman of the board of directors for the Fox River Study Group, a coalition of different groups, such as the Friends of the Fox River, Sierra Club and Fox River Ecosystem Partnership, working together to assess water quality in the Fox River watershed.

“It is very important that we protect headwater streams and wetlands that are kind of the capillaries to our arteries and veins of water like the Fox River,” Skrukrud added. “You need to protect those capillaries if you are going to have clean water downstream.”

The federal Clean Water Act originally was passed in 1972.

The rule would make clear that the EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers have the authority and responsibility to protect smaller bodies of water from harmful pollution.

In September 2013, the EPA first announced the proposed rule, which would restore Clean Water Act protections to waterways throughout Illinois and across the country.

The public is invited to comment on the proposed rule online through July 21 as part of a public comment period.

“This is a campaign that we have worked on for many years,” said Lisa Nikodem,

campaign director with Environment Illinois. “We wholeheartedly want the EPA to take this action and finally restore clean water protection to all of our waterways across the state.”

The group is attempting to collect 14,000 public comments this summer in favor of the new rule.

Gary Swick, president of the board of directors for the Friends of the Fox River, also welcomed the initiative, especially given the additional pressures being put on streams that feed into the Fox

River.

“Any initiative that wants to manage the watershed as a watershed as opposed to just the main stem of the river makes much more sense,” Swick said. “The water quality in the Fox River had been pretty stable since the Clean Water Act was passed up until about the year 2000. But now what’s changing is there is more and more pressure on these tributaries, or streams.

They are called upon to handle a lot of stormwater runoff, and the stormwater runoff is a problem both in quantity and

quality.”

Brook McDonald, president and chief executive officer of The Conservation Foundation, echoed those concerns.

The Conservation Foundation’s mission includes protecting watersheds such as Tyler Creek and Blackberry Creek in Kane County, which feed into the Fox River.

in particular, then you’ve got water that doesn’t meet water quality standards in the small streams, and it all flows to the main stem,” McDonald said.

McDonald said that while the Fox River has become cleaner over the past several decades, “If you are not looking at where the water is coming from, then you are ignoring the source of the problem.”

Unlike pollution that comes from a factory or a sewage treatment plant, McDonald said it is harder to regulate “nonpoint source pollution.”

“That is primarily stormwater runoff,” McDonald said.

“Stormwater runoff has now become the No. 1 water pollution problem in our waterways. And when you change the land use in a waterway from agriculture to urban, the evidence is that urban runoff is really a problem for the water quality of our streams. It’s the urbanization of the land that’s causing the problem.”

While the new rule wouldn’t prevent the waterways from being developed, McDonald said it would make sure that when they are developed, “that the stormwater runoff from the new development is managed and cleaned in a way that protects the stream.”

Area mourning death of teenager

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland School District 302 community is mourning the death of a Harter Middle School eighth-grade student, who died Saturday night, days before the school’s eighth-grade promotion event.

Parker Wolfsmith, 14, died after an incident that took place about 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the North Liberty Street railroad crossing in Maple Park, according to the Maple Park Police Department.

He was hit by a Union Pacific railroad train, and Police Chief Mike Acosta said Monday the incident is not being investigated as a suicide.

According to a news release from the Kane County Coroner’s Office, Wolfsmith was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:01 p.m. Saturday.

The cause of death was ruled as blunt force trauma to the head, according to the release.

Acosta said Wolfsmith, who resided just outside of the Maple Park village limits, was with a group of people, but that Wolfsmith was the only one near the train crossing at the time. Acosta said he is waiting for film footage from the train that could provide more details about what happened.

“We’re still trying to figure out what all went down,” he said.

Kaneland Superintendent Jeff Schuler said Wolfsmith had moved into the district at the beginning of his

eighth-grade year. Schuler said staff members described Wolfsmith as “a fun-loving bright guy” with a “great sense of humor.”

Schuler said the district had a “full complement of support staff” available to students Monday. Schuler sent out a news release Sunday, and an email was sent out to families in the district.

Schuler said part of the goal with that decision is so that “parents can begin processing that information.”

“Unfortunately, we’ve been through this with other students,” Schuler said, adding that the Kaneland community “absolutely” has been supportive in such situations.

In April 2013, Caitlyn Phillips died after colliding with a car while inline skating a few blocks from her home.

In the news release, Schuler noted that district officials wanted “to extend our deepest condolences and sympathy to Parker’s family and friends.” It also noted that any arrangement information would be posted online at www.kaneland.org, but that information has not yet been posted.

The district’s eighth-graders are to participate in an event, the Class of 2018 eighthgrade promotion and dance, at 6:30 p.m. today. Schuler said that event would go on as scheduled.

“Certainly, it creates a very difficult circumstance under which some of our students are going to be attending that celebratory event,” Schuler said.

GENEVA – One additional Democrat filed for the Nov. 4 general election ballot by the deadline, which was Monday, Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham said.

Martha Hanna of the 200 block of Evergreen Drive, Batavia, filed to run in the Kane County Board race for the 11th District. She will run against John Martin of Geneva, who won the Republican nomination in the March 18 primary.

Hanna lost to County Board member Mike Donahue, R-Geneva, in 2012. Donahue said he would not seek re-election this year.

Because no Democrat or third-party candidate filed to run for county clerk, Cunningham will seek a fourth term unopposed.

Mark Guethle, chairman of the Kane County Democratic Central Committee, said he tried to slate a candidate to run against Cunningham, but he could not find one who was willing.

“I worked it, but nobody

wanted to run,” Guethle said.

“It’s hard to get someone to run countywide. It’s hard to get people to run for office.

They do not want to do it or they do not have the time. ...

I tried. It was not for lack of effort.”

Guethle said Democrats were represented in other races.

“We have Democrats for County Board up for re-election,” Guethle said. “We have a sheriff candidate, two congressional candidates and candidates for statewide races.”

She was born March 10, 1941, in Celina, Tennessee, the daughter of Pete and Bessie (Reels) Brown.

Soon after college, Linda was an executive secretary in the headquarters of an NYSE corporation in Michigan. Several years later, she moved to Geneva where she became active in the community.

Linda was a volunteer at Community and Delnor hospitals, a docent at the Geneva Historical Society and a member of the Garden Club. Over the years, she enjoyed bowling, golf, quilting, crocheting, tole painting and antiques.

Linda is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Dennis, and their son, Kevin of Chicago.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral service and interment will be held privately.

DORIS TURNER Born: Feb. 24, 1920 Died: May 30, 2014 LILY LAKE – Doris Turner, 94, of Lily Lake, suddenly passed away, surrounded by the love of her family May 30, 2014. She was born Feb. 24, 1920, in Batavia. Doris grew up on Garfield Farm in La Fox. She graduated from St. Charles High School in 1937 and Sherman Hospital Nursing School in 1941. Doris served her country as a U.S. Army nurse in World War II, stationed in England.

Doris married George W. Turner on July 18, 1953. They made their home on the Turner Family Farm. After the war, Doris was a nurse at Delnor Hospital and Owens-Illinois. Doris was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Lily Lake for 90 years, as well as many social and service organizations.

She is survived by four loving sons, Jim, Bill (Mary), Dan (Peggy) and Steve(Melanie); five grandchildren, Adam, Aaron, Kari, Andrew and Katie; two sisters-in-law, Harriet Strom of Geneva and Phyllis Turner of Sister Bay, Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, George; her parents, Andrew and Hulda Strom; brothers, Evald, Allan and Harold; and sisters, Helga and Rose.

A visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m.

O’ Sole Mio to open a second location in STC

O’ Sole Mio, 27 N. River St., Batavia, plans to open a second shop in the former Dolce Bakery and Cafe site located at 131 S. First St., said O’ Sole Mio co-owner Tory Chiappelli. The second location could be open late this month or by early July.

“It’s an amazing location for us ... we’re really looking forward to being a part of St. Charles,” Chiappelli said Monday.

Chiappelli said the property manager for the St. Charles location is in talks with representatives of one of Dolce’s former owners about obtaining the former bakery’s equipment. The Chiappellis would like to make use of the equipment for their second location.

Gelato production would move from Batavia to St. Charles, with a third production shift added in the evening, Chiappelli said.

The St. Charles O’ Sole Mio will be open during the day and have late hours for the bar and theater crowd, Chiappelli said. In addition, the restaurant will offer sandwiches-to-go, salads, an espresso bar and possibly a full traditional bar.

O’ Sole Mio is hiring for its Batavia location and its forthcoming St. Charles location. To apply, please go in person to 27 N. River St. in Batavia to fill out an application. O’ Sole Mio opens at 11 a.m. every day of the week.

O’ Sole Mio will retain the same customer seating as Dolce, but there will be no wait service.

Dolce first opened in 2009 as Il Giardino del Dolce, which is Italian for “The Garden of the Sweets.” The business changed hands twice before closing in March.

Once Chiappelli has a lease in hand, she plans to paint the St. Charles location, meet Kane County Health Department requirements and obtain a liquor license.

Chiappelli said O’ Sole Mio gained exposure after its gelato was ranked 17th in the country this year while vying for a chance to represent the U.S. in a world Gelato competition.

“We had cities from all over looking for us to open a shop in their [area,]” Chiappelli said.

O’ Sole Mio opened in Batavia in 2013. Chiappelli, her husband Andrea Chiappelli and business partner Tony Natale are the owners.

GENEVA – Alois B. “Al” Hebeisen, 98, of Geneva, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 1, 2014, at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, surrounded by his family.

He was born June 13, 1915, in Elgin, the son of Karl and Victoria (Bogle) Hebeisen.

Al was a World War II Navy veteran and prominent metallurgist and quality control specialist. He was involved in many important metal and power tool innovations at Mall Tool and Skil Corp. He was active in the ASM and the ASQC. As a dedicated volunteer, he taught adult literacy, worked at his parishes and counseled business owners for SCORE, among other causes. Al also was a former Elgin semi-pro ball player, an amateur magician, a crossword master and an avid gardener. He was a true gentleman and an inspiration to his family, his church and his community.

He was the loving father of John (Marge) of New Hampshire, Jim (Dawn) of St. Louis, Rose (Howie) Pierro of Colorado, Tom (Jean) of Grayslake, Charles (Kathy) of Lake Zurich and Louise (Phil) Areddia of Wisconsin; proud grandfather of Steve (Teresa), Bob (Julie), Mark, Laura, Terri (Bob), Krista, Tom (Jynnifer), Rich, Mara (Bill), Megan, Dan, Alyssa (Jack), Stephanie (Jake), Matt and Jack; devoted great-grandparent to 13 great-grandchildren; faithful brother-in-law to Rosella Ehl; further survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Emails lead to separation of duties Cunningham used county email campaign, political purposes

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham used his county email for campaign and political purposes going back to December, additional emails released show.

Cunningham and a former deputy clerk who also volunteered on his primary election campaign both used the county’s computers and email servers to do campaign work.

State law and the county’s own ethics ordinance forbid the use of taxpayer resources for political purposes.

Cunningham said he has taken steps to separate his work as the county clerk from his re-election efforts and Republican Party work.

“I’m not perfect. As soon as you helped me realize that it is a problem, I have done away with that totally,” Cunningham said. “I have a separate mobile campaign office

Cunningham said he also changed his Kane County email so everyone who contacted him that way would not be able to get through.

Cunningham said the way he used the county’s email was how people kept in touch with him.

“Things would go on my calendar. This job has a lot of things people ask you to do,” Cunningham said. “A lot of people used that [old] email over the years.”

Cunningham said he would not comment further about using the county’s emails improperly.

His former deputy clerk, Jeff Ward, was first suspended for five days without pay after he used his county email account to file Cunningham’s election material March 12 with the Illinois State Board of Elections.

Cunningham’s additional emails released through a Freedom of Information Act request show: • Cunningham forwarded an email at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 to Ward from the John Ericsson Republican League about attending a meeting.

• Cunningham also forwarded a newspaper candidate questionnaire at 11:06 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11.

• Ward sent a comment about a deadline extension for the candidate questionnaire to Cunningham at 1:54 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17.

• Ward sent an Elgin Township Republican straw poll on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 8:34 a.m. from his county email account to Cunningham’s.

Ward worked for 17 months as a deputy clerk.

His position was eliminated May 1 and he is to receive $11,298.42 according to a severance agreement.

Kane County board member Mark Davoust, R-St. Charles, who lost to Cunningham in the GOP primary race for clerk, said Cunningham should have known better.

“In light of the fact that Mr. Cunningham touted his legal prowess in this race, I cannot understand how he allowed this to happen,” Davoust said. “Therefore, he owes us a better explanation than ‘I’m not perfect.’”

Davoust notified the county ethics advisor Grant Wegner regarding Ward’s emails.

Wegner referred the matter to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Because no Democrat or third party filed by the deadline for the Nov. 4 ballot, Cunningham will run unopposed for a fourth term as county clerk.

Suit against country club dismissed

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A lawsuit brought against the St. Charles Country Club by a young woman and her mother has been dismissed, according to Kane County court records.

Records indicate Judge Edward C. Schreiber dismissed the suit with prejudice last month, meaning it can’t be refiled.

Joe Loran, the attorney representing Hannah and Barbara Braulick, said in an email that the country club

“I am not able to comment further, at this time, on the financial terms of the parties agreement.”

The Braulicks filed suit in 2013 over injuries Hannah Braulick, then 16, sustained

According to court documents, a motorized equipment vehicle driven by an employee overturned, pinned her and dragged her, causing permanent injuries and disfigurement.

The lawsuit asserted that the country club failed

to maintain control of its vehicle and allowed more people in it than was safe, making it more likely to tip over.

And when the employee who was driving it turned sharply, it did tip over, pinning the teen under it and dragging her along the pavement, the lawsuit stated.

Hannah Braulick was seeking more than $50,000 in damages.

Barbara Braulick was seeking more than $50,000 in damages for medical costs related to her daughter’s injuries.

18 same-sex couples seek marriage licenses on Monday in county

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Eighteen samesex couples sought marriage licenses in Kane County on Monday, the first day the clerk’s office was open to accept them under a new Illinois law.

Fifteen were in civil unions who filed for conversions to marriages. Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham said his office did not charge a fee for the conversions.

Three same-sex couples came in for marriage licenses, and one heterosexual couple with a civil union also converted the union to a marriage license, Cunningham said.

“We have only had a little over 200 civil unions, less than 10 percent of the population,” Cunningham said. “We handle this like any other license.”

Patrick’s son, Brandon, mows the Huberts’ lawn, so it’s one less thing they have to worry about. He said the Huberts are a compassionate family.

BATAVIA – The turnout on Saturday at a Batavia family walk-a-thon benefit put a smile on Danielle Burciaga’s face.

There were more than 100 people on or near the Rotolo Middle School outdoor track one hour into the event. Then some members of the Batavia Fire Department showed up to help cool down the runners by setting up one of their fire hoses.

The walk-a-thon raised $4,878, which was within range of Burciaga’s initial $5,000 goal.

She said there were generous donors who far surpassed the $10 a person entry fee.

“I was just trying to do something nice for somebody,” said Burciaga, a Cortland resident. “In the end, it was all worth it for me.”

Burciaga, an Illinois Central School Bus driver, organized the three-mile walk-a-thon for Batavian Mike Hubert and his family. Hubert was diagnosed in 2010 with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which is a cancer of the lymph tissue. He recently completed his second stem cell transplant and came home Sunday from Northwestern

Need for a better VA THE WASHINGTON POST The political fallout from a report confirming allegations that Department of Veterans Affairs administrators in Phoenix and possibly other facilities manipulated medical waiting lists to hide treatment delays prompted President Obama on Friday to accept the resignation of VA Secretary Eric K. Shinseki.

Shinseki, himself a veteran who suffered grievous wounds and who has been a champion for those who served their country, concluded he had become too much of a distraction to be effective. It is clear, though, from a reading of the report by the department’s Office of Inspector General – the 19th report issued since 2005 about delays and scheduling issues – that it will take more than a ritual resignation and the election-year posturing that accompanied it to resolve the systemic issues that have long plagued the VA. The interim report is scathing in its assessment of how staff at the Phoenix VA understated wait times, possibly in a bid to burnish the evaluations of hospital personnel that are tied to raises and bonuses. It found 1,700 veterans not on the official wait list and in danger of being overlooked.

The average waiting time to get an initial appointment was placed at 115 days, or almost five times as long as what had been reported. Whether any deaths resulted from the delays was not determined, but the investigation continues.

There is general agreement that the quality of care in the VA system is good, with the system outperforming the private sector and surveys of veterans consistently showing high patient satisfaction. The problem, one that has persisted for decades, has been access to care – the long waits to qualify for services and get an ap-

pointment. Indeed, the current scandal seems to have its roots in a guideline established by the VA to attack those delays, setting 14 days as the deadline to get care for non-urgent appointments.

Given the resources of the VA, the influx of wounded from two wars and the fact that the average wait to see a family physician in a major metropolitan area is 20 days, is that reasonable? Sam Foote, a doctor who worked at the Phoenix VA and blew the whistle on its scheduling scam, recently argued in the New York Times that the scheduling scandal is but a symptom of the more serious problem of a mismatch between the system’s mission and its resources. Phillip Longman, whose authoritative book “The Best Care Anywhere” examines the VA, has talked about an “ambivalence” about what vets are owed, in which the American public agrees that anyone hurt in the line of duty should be taken care of but is conflicted about whether everyone in the military should get free health care.

Congress, as Dr. Foote wrote, needs to decide whether to revert to a time when it took care only of patients’ service-connected conditions, along with a safety net for impoverished veterans, or try to re-establish a more universal program that builds on the current system’s strengths. Unfortunately, partisan divisions are already forming, with Republicans seemingly wanting to dismantle the system in favor of privatization while Democrats argue for more money.

Abandoning a system that has provided quality care and that has developed specialized care for the unique injuries of the United States’ wounded doesn’t make sense. But neither does resisting proposals that give veterans – especially those in underserved areas – other options for treatment.

It seems that Boko Haram intends to sell them into sex slavery, and – if that’s true – they would become the latest victims in one of the world’s oldest and darkest legacies.

I first learned about human trafficking as a junior in college, while proofing a paper about the role that the Internet plays in facilitating it. Human trafficking is the illegal movement of people, typically for forced labor or sexual exploitation, for profit.

It affects millions around the world, particularly in the East, and respects no boundaries or social strata. As a doting big brother to a little girl adopted from China, I’m acutely aware

of how vulnerable orphans and foster children are. It’s a crime so subtle, we could be interacting with victims on a daily basis and never know.

Scale alone seems to be the reason we’re informed of the Nigerian incident. Scale also poses the biggest risk to obscuring the real danger that human trafficking poses to our community. While single abductions of 200 children are rare in the U.S., the estimated scale of the human trafficking operation in the Chicagoland area far exceeds that many victims.

That’s why I was happy to learn of the work that

He has been fighting for legislation that would help prevent youth in our foster care system from falling prey to sex traffickers and for legislation that would mandate a national strategy to combat human trafficking from the attorney general. Aggressive STC East defender helping Saints lock down foes

Despite standing only 5-foot-1, the junior has emerged as a crucial cog for a St. Charles East back line that shined again Friday as the Saints shut out host Conant, 1-0, for a sectional championship. Buetow and the Saints will turn their attention to Huntley in tonight’s IHSA Class 3A Lake Park Supersectional.

“I just go up with confidence,” Buetow said. “I know I can win the ball so I make sure I do it. I know I’m relying on my team, and they’re relying on me.”

Defense was the obvious question for the Saints entering the season as East returned little experience along the back line.

But Buetow, Sonia Ost, Mallory Mollenhauer and converted midfielder/forward Shannon Rasmussen have meshed into one of the Saints’ greatest strongsuits.

Buetow might be the most unlikely success story, if only because of a height disadvantage that she’s rendered mostly inconsequential with her assertive, confident play.

“She plays like she’s 6-feet tall,” East midfielder Amanda Hilton said. “She wins every, single ball out of the air, and we trust her so much. I think that’s huge for our team. She’s not scared. She will go in there no matter who she’s playing against, no matter what the girl’s size is. That’s something a center-back needs, and she has it.”

Buetow split time between the midfield and center-back when she played for East’s junior varsity as a sophomore.

East coach Paul Jennison didn’t hesitate to slot Buetow at center-back upon her varsity debut.

in my mind she was going to be a starting center-back for us,” Jennison said. “She’s physical, she wins the ball and she proves that height doesn’t matter.

“If you’re going to go win the ball, you’re going to play on anyone’s team. She’s got the heart of a lion out there.”

Buetow acknowledged being “pretty quiet” for a chunk of the season but said she’s “coming out of my shell more” as she gains experience.

Buetow considers her ability to anticipate what’s unfolding around her to be the most valuable component of

her skill set.

“Probably just seeing the game,” Buetow said. “Like on that one ball [against Conant] where she was dribbling toward me and I sort of could predict where she was going. And trying to [play] it to feet.”

The fourth-seeded Saints pulled a pair of seeding upsets to advance to today’s supersectional, ousting top-seeded St. Charles North and second-seeded Conant last week.

Huntley (19-6), meanwhile, is coming off a penalty-kick shootout win against Machesney Park Harlem in

Friday’s Rockford Auburn Sectional championship match. The teams were scoreless through regulation and two overtime periods.

East and Huntley have not met this season.

“We can do it, I really think so,” Hilton said. “We just need to go out there and play like we did [Friday]. I thought we played unbelievable again. If we can do what we did [Friday], we’re on our way to state, and that was our goal since the beginning of the season. We really believed we could do it so we’re going to make our name.”

The winner will play in a state semifinal at 5 p.m. Friday at North Central College in Naperville.

“We know we’ve got to bring our best game,” Jennison said. “I don’t think there’s a favorite. It’s going to be a case of going in there 50/50, bringing the best game you’ve got and hoping you can come out on top.”

Burlington Central coach Maisto puts family first

Maisto was not in attendance Saturday as Central (239) won a thriller against Kaneland, 6-5, in the IHSA Class 3A Burlington Central Regional championship game.

Instead, he was at daughter Jordan’s graduation from Elmhurst College. Jordan graduated with an exercise science degree.

While Wade Maisto was away, another daughter, Erica, expanded her assistant coaching duties for the Rockets, along with fellow Central assistant Lowell Oranger.

Wade Maisto recognized the potential conflict with a regional championship game for the Rockets weeks ago but hoped bad weather or some other conflict might cause the game to be rescheduled. He wasn’t about to ask the game be rescheduled on his account, though.

Recalling the fanfare – or lack thereof – when the White Sox selected him 26th overall 20 years ago this month, Cougars manager Mark Johnson admitted “the public hardly knew about” the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

“I had a good idea I was going to get picked pretty high, but we just stayed at the house and waited for the phone to ring,” Johnson said. “We didn’t really have cellphones, anything like that, so we just sat in the garage and got together with some friends and family and waited on getting a phone call, and that was it.”

Area teams seize regional titles KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE Four area softball and three baseball teams won regional championships Saturday while others fell short.

Here’s a recap of Saturday’s dramatic day on the diamonds for area teams, and what’s next:

Class 4A St. Charles East Softball Regional: St. Charles East 5, Elk Grove 2 The skinny: Trailing 2-0, St. Charles East (30-6) scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning – including a tying, tworun home run from Mackenzie Lofgren and RBI singles from Olivia Cheatham and Alex Latoria – to eliminate the 29-win Grenadiers. CHARLESTON – Members of the Cahokia boys track and field team’s 4x400-meter relay exhaled within a few paces of their Kaneland counterparts Saturday afternoon.

Comanches anchor Tyran Lyons withstood a tremendous charge from the Knights’ Nathaniel Kucera, whose closing kick still kept the Knights just short of the championship pace.

Cahokia earned its fourth straight Class 2A state title at Eastern Illinois’ O’Brien Stadium, sealing the result by winning the relay in a record time of 3:17.66, .8 of a second ahead of Kaneland. It wasn’t lost on either side that the Comanches’ 90-84 team victory was the closest spread during the run.

Score one for the Knights’ burgeoning reputation.

“We didn’t know. We had no idea,” said Comanches senior Marlin Brady, who ran the relay’s third leg. “Kaneland’s tough, though. They’re some tough boys, man.

They’re tough.”

Being called “tough” three times in the same sentence by the opponents they had strived all season to beat likely won’t provide much solace for the Knights.

The program followed a runner-up effort in 2010 by finishing tied for 16th, then 11th and sixth in the three state finals before Saturday.

Burlington Central placed third with a distant 38 points, as an expectant and sunsplashed crowd zeroed in on the Cahokia-Kaneland duel.

“We just came in knowing that we had a mission to do today, and if we just did what we could do, we could make it a show between us and Cahokia,” said Kucera, also the anchor of the runner-up 4x800 and sixth in the 400. “They’re a fantastic program and we knew coming in that they

weren’t going to back down.”

Kaneland opened the day about as solidly as it could have hoped, winning early titles in the shot put and long jump.

Nate Dyer had a personal-best put of 58 feet, 5¼ inches before Ben Barnes also established a PR of 23-5 in the long jump.

“The vibe here was just really good coming into today,” Dyer said. “Throwing a PR today was huge. Didn’t expect it, but it happened.”

Barnes capitalized on Cahokia’s Jamari Ward, the defending champion in the event, passing on a late attempt after suffering an injury.

Acting on the advice of jumps coach Ryan Gierke, one of a handful of coaches paying it forward at his alma mater, Barnes shifted his starting mark back a few paces to build more speed on the straightaway.

It worked.

“I just had the mind frame that it could be my last jump all year,” Barnes said. “Just might as well go out with something special.”

Edging Ward only started Knights athletes, coaches and fans on the path of projecting and scoreboard watching.

Kaneland missed an opportunity for more points when the 4x100 was disqualified on the final exchange. A few hours later, the Knights gained ground when Centralia’s Kalvin Johnson fell after the final hurdle, allowing Kaneland seniors Dylan Nauert and Brock Robertson to move up to third and fourth, respectively.

BC junior Lucas Ege won the 300 hurdles in a 2A-record 37.34, .86 seconds better than Cahokia standout Gary Hickman. Ege emerged from his junior season unbeaten.

“I kind of wish I had some competition, just because I could go a lot faster and because competition is huge for me,” Ege said, “but I can’t complain.”

CLASS 1A Aurora Christian won a 1A title for the second Saturday in a row, scoring 46.5 points to edge Eureka (42) and Tuscola (37) for the team title.

Last weekend, the ACS girls delivered a team championship, too, which helped accelerate the urgency during the boys’ final week of workouts.

“They weren’t bragging at all,” Eagles senior Noah Roberts said. “That kind of gave us motivation to do our best, and they just kind of encouraged us. They weren’t bragging, but we definitely had to try to match up to what they did last week.”

Roberts joined classmates Noah Hagerty, Grant Schweistal and Johnathan Harrell on runner-up relays in the 4x100 and 4x200. Harrell also placed second in the 400.

Senior Jonah Walker contributed to the team’s top finish, winning a state title in the discus after his throw of 165-10 clipped the effort of Carthage Illini West’s Blaze Murfin by six inches. Aurora Christian officials said it is believed to be the school’s first individual state track title.

Along the way, Walker used equipment that would only be familiar to the keenest of track fans. Years ago, Walker’s father purchased the discus Winnebago’s Alex Thompson used to set the 1A record of 1932 in 2010.

Walker launched the same discus from his own hands in each of his high school attempts.

“That discus has won first twice at the state meet,” Walker said.

Oh, yeah? How’s it look?

“It’s in OK shape, you know,” Walker said. “It’s obviously valid. They weighed it and everything.”

Mooseheart closed the meet with a title in the 4x400, as the collaborative time of Jeremy Kalicum, Josh Gordon, Brandon Gadson and Wal Khat, 3:24.48, was nearly two seconds faster than the quartet from Teutopolis.

“Me and my teammates, we work hard,” said Khat, who also placed fourth in the 800.

“We worked hard for it, and we achieved it.”

Mooseheart finished in a four-way tie for seventh with 20 points. Other podium-bound athletes included junior Joe Feemorlu, who was seventh in the 110 hurdles in a personal-best 15.22.

Also a wrestling state qualifier earlier this school year, Feemorlu planned to share news of the feat with his father in North Dakota. He said his mother still lives in his native Liberia “as far as I know.”

Feemorlu left his war-torn homeland for Columbus, Ohio, at age 10 and since has relocated to Mooseheart.

“I very much appreciate it.

That’s one of the main things that really inspired me to do a lot of sports, so I could get the [Mooseheart] name out there,” Feemorlu said. “So other people know that, oh yeah, we’re not just so-called orphans.

None of us are actually orphans. We’re just there for a stable home, basically.”

In the minds of the dreamier Hawks fans, he was going to be that long-sought-after center, but he didn’t look quite ready for the rigors of the NHL. The window for more Hawks championships is not closing. It’s still wide open, and fresh air is still breezing through. Saad raised his game in the playoffs and showed he can be a star in this league. If the 35-year-old Hossa slows down, Saad, 21, will be there to pick up the slack. Big if. Hossa looked as strong with the puck as ever this season. Ben Smith is a keeper.

This is the most talented team in the NHL, and that’s not going to change in the course of an offseason. It’s why you stay the course if you’re the Hawks.

“The road to the Western Conference goes right through Chicago,’’ Kings coach Darryl Sutter said after Game 7.

And if the Kings beat the Rangers for the Cup, as expected? “[The Hawks are] going to have to come through us,’’

They’ll meet with the media Tuesday, and I’m sure we’ll hear about various injuries they hid from public view during the regular season and playoffs. It’s an NHL tradition.

Somebody will have been dealing with two broken legs, a lacerated kidney and malaria.

Maybe the Hawks finally will admit they were tired. It took me much too long to come to the conclusion that they probably were dealing with fatigue more than any other team in the league. They didn’t look like themselves in the playoffs.

Ten Hawks played in the Sochi Olympics in February, and the truly amazing thing was that most of them performed well when they returned to Chicago.

Next season will have no Olympic interruption. The Hawks should be fresher all around. They won’t be coming off an intense, condensed

schedule the way they were this season, nor will they be coming off a summer of partying with the Stanley Cup. Expect them to show up much more zeroed in next season.

There’s a portion of Hawks fans that spends a lot of time unhappy with life. It’s hard to understand. It’s as if they’re not pleased unless they’re complaining about something. As Mark Lazerus, the Sun-Times’ Hawks beat writer, so rightly put it, this is the Golden Age of hockey in Chicago. Some of you might want to stop and enjoy it.

The team likely will part ways with the ineffective Kris Versteeg, which should placate some of the pitchfork wavers.

For a while.

The Hawks will have plenty of time to rest and get back to it next season. They will be Stanley Cup contenders from Day 1.

As long as nobody panics.

Keep calm and don’t carry on like overwrought reactionaries.

That message is meant for Blackhawks management and Blackhawks fans alike.

For both groups, the knee-jerk response to what happened Sunday night at the United Center would be a call for change. The defending Stanley Cup champions have nothing to defend anymore, not after falling to the Kings in Game 7 of the Western Conference final. But it doesn’t mean they have reason to alter a very potent roster in any significant way.

They came within a deflected overtime goal of getting to the final again. They blew three leads in Game 7 and a bunch of leads throughout the playoffs. How do you react to that if you’re Hawks general manager Stan Bowman?

You don’t. The blown leads don’t point to any bigger problem.

Baumritter and Ancell bought a furniture company in Beecher Falls, Vt., in 1936. The company introduced a 28-piece line of “Ethan Allen” furniture, named after the Revolutionary War hero, in 1939. The name of the company became Ethan Allen Industries in 1972. Furniture with a modern look and light color is bought by those wanting a ‘50s look and sells for a little more than other used furniture.

Buying, selling or importing ivory from recently killed African elephants already is illegal and has been for about 25 years.

But an executive order issued by President Barack Obama would extend the ban to include all antique ivory harvested from elephants that died before 1914. There would be a law forbidding sales, even gifts to museums, of any ivory, including antique pieces. This affects antiques dealers and collectors, knife makers and collectors, Inuit craftsmen, owners of mahjong and chess sets, and manufacturers of musical instruments, including guitars and violins - the list could go on. And those in favor of strong endangered species laws want to also insist that all confiscated antique carved ivory art be destroyed - not even given to a museum. Already thousands of pounds of ivory art objects have been destroyed. This will cause huge losses to companies, collectors and museums. Express your opinion in this controversy.

The signature on the back is “Legras.” The vase is decorated with trees around a lake. The orangecolored sky and reflection in the lake look like it is sunset or sunrise. When light shines through the glass, it looks like the sun is shining through the trees. Can you tell me anything about the maker and the vase’s value?

A: Auguste Legras founded his glassworks at St. Denis, France, in 1864. Legras is known for its cameo glass and enamel-decorated glass in Art Nouveau designs. The company merged with Pantin in 1920. Legras vases sell for a few hundred to over a thousand dollars.

Netflix’s ‘Derek’ returns, handled with loving care

By HANK STUEVER The Washington Post Ricky Gervais’ “Derek,” which returns to Netflix on Friday with six new episodes that recently aired on British television, is a quiet and hopeful little comedy about social behavior, as seen and understood by a man who is ... well, what is Derek?

Gervais, who stars as Derek Noakes, carefully avoids providing viewers with a diagnosis for his character, which he first performed in a stand-up comedy routine more than a decade ago. He has said that Derek, who works as an aide in a nursing home, isn’t mentally disabled or intellectually challenged. Perhaps he’s autistic. Not knowing seems to be the entire point: Can’t we just relate to Derek on his own, as he is, beyond a label?

When it had its American debut last fall, “Derek” deserved a viewer’s wariness. What possible business – what possible reason – could Gervais, whose humor so easily swerves beyond the pale, have in taking on such a role, other than to make fun of a differently abled person or to seek some maudlin applause for broadening his acting range?

and exhibiting an array of nervous tics, Gervais has given himself the freedom to assess the human condition; in the ways that matter most, “Derek” is right in line with Gervais’ other shows – “The Office,” “Extras,” “Life’s Too Short” – in that it revels in the inescapable truths found in awkward situations.

So relax. “Derek” is an honest and often charming endeavor. As with the geriatric hospital wing seen in “Getting On” (both the British version and HBO’s excellent American remake), “Derek” is fully comfortable with showing us the experience of aging and dying.

“I loves old people,” Derek says about his job. “I think I’ve learned everything I knows from old people.” This is refreshing news after so many shows that mostly mock the elderly.

The show handles its subject matter with remarkable care as Derek faces new, sometimes upsetting situations this season.

His alcoholic father becomes a resident at the nursing home, while a new employee seems intent on disrupting the facility’s pleasant routines. Meanwhile, Derek’s boss, Hannah (Kerry Godliman), and her boyfriend, Tom (Brett Goldstein), are

trying to conceive – an effort Derek has an enthusiastic and clinical curiosity about, going so far as to dig Hannah’s pregnancy tests out of the trash can.

Though it leans on some exhausted tropes – especially Gervais’ dependence on the mockumentary format – “Derek” wisely heaps its dirtiest humor on a single character, Derek’s perpetually drunk friend Kev (David Earl), whose appetites for sex and sloth stand in stark contrast to Derek’s generous and naive spirit.

The idea is that Derek simply doesn’t know better, that he cannot recognize Kev’s repulsiveness enough to shun it. Or, as the show repeatedly reminds us, perhaps Derek has the wisdom to see past everyone’s faults – including Kev’s.

Tone is everything here. In reaching for tenderness, “Derek” sometimes wanders briefly into the sugary sweet; in going for laughs, it sometimes forgets to effectively conclude a story arc. But overall, “Derek” is a poignant and funny character sketch.

All it really wants to tell us is that everyone ought to be lucky enough to find that place where they belong.

Keeping a journal may help settle your stress Dear Doctor K: My therapist told me that regularly writing in a journal might help ease my stress and improve my mood. Is there any evidence to back this up?

Dear Reader: Yes, there is, if you are disciplined about it and do it the right way. Some of my patients and friends have kept a journal following a major and unexpected life stress – say, a cancer diagnosis, a car accident or a layoff. Others have been doing it most of their adult lives, not in response to a major life event.

What goes into such a journal?

What do you write about? Whatever is on your mind and feels important as you begin to write. It might be about a problem you are currently dealing with. It might be about a significant event in your past. It might be about your family. It might also be about something wonderful – and why it is wonderful to you.

When you’re writing about a stressful life event, recording your thoughts can help you cope with the emotional fallout of such events.

Expressive writing may help if you struggle with ongoing depression or anxiety, but research suggests that it is more effective for otherwise healthy people who have suffered an emotional blow.

In one study, college students were divided into two groups.

One group wrote about personally traumatic life events for 15 minutes on four consecutive days.

The other group of students wrote about trivial topics.

Compared to those who wrote about trivia, the students who wrote about traumatic experiences used fewer pain relievers over the next six months. They also visited the campus health center less often.

How does writing help? The key may be in thinking deeply about the experience. When you’re writing, you’re likely to take a close look at the experience, put it in perspective and make connections to other aspects of your personal development.

Timing also matters. It may help to put some distance between yourself and a bad experience before writing about it. If you write about a stressful event immediately after it occurs, you may actually feel worse.

If you’d like to give expressive

writing a try: • Set a length of time to write, say 15 or 30 minutes.

• Set a schedule, such as daily for five days, or weekly for a month.

• Focus on a stressful experience.

• Write nonstop and freely (whatever comes to mind) during the time you’ve set aside.

• Don’t worry about grammar, punctuation or writing style.

• Try to explore and express your innermost thoughts and feelings without holding back.

Girlfriend loathes man’s vulgar use of language Dr. Wallace: I’m 20 and dating a super nice guy.

I work for an attorney, and the guy I’m seeing is an attorney for another firm. The only major flaw this guy has is his vulgar language. I have never been around someone who has such a foul mouth. It wouldn’t be so bad if he used his off-color adjectives when we are alone, but he uses them in mixed company.

I’ve told him many, many times that I don’t appreciate his “salty” language. He agrees that he should stop using terrible language, but he continues swearing.

Sometimes when I’m with him he cuts loose so other people can hear him, and this causes me much embarrassment.

Some of my close friends don’t like to be around him, and my parents loathe him.

What should I do? Other than his bad language, he’s great. He can speak properly because I’ve heard him defend a client in court. – Nameless, Rock Island Dear Nameless: There are two main reasons people use profane language.

First, they are uneducated and do not have a good vocabulary, therefore they substitute unacceptable adjectives to relay their message.

Second, the user of profane language can speak the “Queen’s English,” but uses profanity as a shock method to drive home a point. The guy you are seeing has been using profanity for a long time and it has become (to him) an important part of his vocabulary.

Then the cigarette is passed to you and all six girls encourage you to, “Take a drag; you’ll really like it.” At that moment, you are experiencing peer pressure.

You really don’t want to try it because you don’t want to get involved with drugs, but you want to be accepted by the popular girls.

Peer pressure, especially in the teen years, is a powerful force, and it takes courage and lots of intestinal fortitude to say, “No thanks,” when tempted to join in.

Duffy Daugherty, who was the head football coach at Michigan State University from 1954 to 1972, said, “Three things can happen when you put a ball in the air – and two of them are bad.”

In this deal, East has three possible plays at trick one – and two of them are bad. South is in three no-trump. West leads the heart eight and declarer covers with dummy’s 10. Which heart should East play?

East made a two-heart weak jump overcall, promising a respectable six-card suit and 5-10 high-card points. South responded with a negative double, indicating four spades. North cue-bid three hearts to show game-forcing values and to ask South if he had a heart stopper for no-trump purposes.

South starts with eight top tricks: one heart (given the lead), four diamonds and three clubs. If clubs are 3-3, the contract is safe, but if that suit is not breaking favorably, declarer will have to score a spade trick.

If East wins the first trick with his heart ace and returns the suit, South will make his contract. Suppose instead East plays his heart queen. South will get home if – admittedly a big if – he does not take the trick.

However, East should recall that when an opponent has only one stopper in the suit he is trying to establish, give that trick to the opponent as quickly as possible. East should signal enthusiastically with his nine. Declarer wins, tries the clubs, cashes his diamonds, and turns to spades.

But West grabs the trick, cashes his club jack and leads his second heart to defeat the contract.
