Chorus shakes it up with patriotic concert

Lynn Haidle, 83, gave a little history for each song.

“Let me tell you something about the ‘Star Spangled Banner,’ ” Haidle said. “It hasn’t always been our national anthem …. It wasn’t until Congress decided they would do a resolution for it March 3, 1931.”

Haidle said that Charles Lindbergh thought the “Air Force Song” was “mediocre.”

After the chorus sang, “Off we go into the wild blue yonder,” with gusto, Haidle said, “I don’t think that it was mediocre.”

Before ending the program with “God Bless America,” Haidle said songwriter Irving Berlin wrote it in 1918 while serving in the army. He set it

“Berlin, who had been a Russian immigrant and who was Jewish, thought it was time to revive it as something for a peace song. It was introduced on Armistice Day, broadcast [in] 1938 by Kate Smith,” Haidle said.

“Woody Guthrie criticized it as complacent and unrealis-

tic,” Haidle said. “Anti-semitic groups such as the Ku Klux Klan protested the song due to its authorship by a Jewish immigrant.”

Berlin assigned the song’s royalties to benefit the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of the USA, Haidle said.

“I like being in the chorus because it makes me feel good,” Pam Moran said. “And I love these songs.”

Judy Strubler agreed.

“I enjoy being with the people and I enjoy singing,” Strubler said. “And we have a good

time.”

Haidle said the group performs about four concerts a year.

She invited audience members to join them, as rehearsals start again at 6 p.m. Tuesdays starting again in July.

“Not because you sing well,” Haidle said. “But because you sing with enthusiasm. … It’s supposed to be fun.”

The focus of the open house is to discuss the preliminary riverfront improvement strategy, review design concepts and provide input before recommendations are finalized in August, the release states.

The consultant team will make a brief presentation of their preliminary recommendations at 7 p.m. July 7. Af-

ter the presentation, the consultant team and Task Force members will be available to discuss the project and receive public input, according to the release.

As an update to the River Corridor Master Plan completed in 2002, the River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles formed the Active River Task Force to determine ways to capitalize on the Fox River as a natural and economic asset.

The consultant team in August plans to deliver a market-supported strategy, policy recommendations, and a framework for public and private investment over the next five years and beyond, the release states.

Ice cream, pet parade, music and more at Windmill City Festival editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Windmill City Festival will take place July 9 through July 12 at the Riverwalk in downtown Batavia.

Admission is free. The riverwalk is at Houston Street and Island Avenue, Batavia.

Among the highlights: The band 7th Heaven will take the main stage from 9 to 11 p.m. July 10. Also, the craft show has been expanded to two days – from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A pet parade takes place at 10 a.m. July 11. Participants can register from 9:15 to 9:50 a.m. near the main stage. Prizes will be awarded in several

categories, including best trick, most unusual pet, best costume and best kisser. The first 50 pets will receive a complimentary goodie bag, courtesy of local sponsors. Anderson Animal Shelter will be conducting an adoption event on site, weather pending.

Runners can tackle the Fox River Trail at 7 p.m. July 10, during the Windmill Whirl 5K Run. Registration is $25 per runner before July 8 or $30 on race day. Additional information and a registration link can be found at www.signmeup.com. Register by June 22 to be guaranteed a race T-shirt.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Public Library once again will host Art of the Imagination, the St. Charles School District 303 Student Art Show, from July 1 to 31.

The library is at 1 S. Sixth Ave., St. Charles.

For more than 25 years, the library has been host to the show, which will feature artwork created by elementary through high school students including drawings, paintings, weavings, photographs, sculptures and digital media.

The student art will be displayed in the Huntley Meeting Room, the art gallery on the mezzanine and both lobby display cases.

“The St. Charles Library Imagination Art Show is a great opportunity for some of the D303 K-12 Visual Art programs to showcase student artwork,” Rebecca Hubbs, art teacher at Wredling Middle School, stated in a news release. “The art show will

Players talk around the league and Foster acknowledges he heard all the stories about the dysfunction in Chicago last year, but when I asked him if it gave him any pause before deciding to sign here he told me it was quite the contrary.

“No, not at all, this was a place I knew I wanted to be once I saw the coaches that were coming in,” he said.

“Coach [John] Fox, playing against him last year, he had a great team. All that other stuff, you could never tell.

Once I walked in here they all welcomed me like a brother, it’s like a big family and I’ve been having a lot of fun.”

Of course I had to ask Foster if any of his trouble in

Tampa last year had anything to do with Lovie.

“No, it was all on me,” Foster said. “You know it was just that shoulder kind of slowed me down and that was about it man, besides that it was on me and you’ve just got to keep getting better, keep learning, keep working and I definitely feel it made me better, just learning from that.”

It only takes a few minutes with Foster to know he’s a bright young man who is more excited about the future than he is concerned about the past, and he also assured me that in spite of the fact the Bears have as many as 15 potential linebackers in camp battling for as few as seven or eight roster spots, he relishes the competition.

“I love it. You’ve got to have good competition if you know what I mean. I would never want people around me that aren’t trying to win and that aren’t trying to compete at the highest level,” he said.

“You know good competition will always make you better so going against Christian

[Jones], Shea [McClellin], [Jonathan] Brown, all these guys. “[Sam] Acho, [David] Bass, everybody competing at a high level, you know you have to come with you’re ‘A-game’ every single day and it’s a good friendly competition, but we’ve got a lot of competition around here.”

Foster may actually be better suited to play inside at the

‘Sam’ in the 3-4 than he was as a ‘Mike’ in Tampa’s 4-3, and he is definitely someone to keep an eye on as one of those guys who could emerge as a playmaker with a real future in the Bears new defensive scheme.

I’ve spent my late winters and springs in recent years talking to as many NFL general managers, coaches and scouts as possible about players currently in the league and getting their evaluations to create the NFL Player Rankings for our Pro Football Weekly NFL Preview magazine.

Coming off a 2012 season in which he had 105 tackles, two sacks, 11 tackles for loss and an interception for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, those insiders ranked Mason Foster the 13th best inside linebacker in the NFL, and this is the consensus of what they had to say about him: “Foster is a three-down player who mans the MLB spot in Tampa’s 4-3 defense and is one of the better athletes playing inside in the league today. In addition to his athleticism, Foster is also known as a huge hitter who will give you highlight-reel tackles fairly regularly and keeps opposing ballcarriers’ heads on a swivel.”

He was even more of a playmaker in 2013, and when Lovie Smith arrived in Tampa in 2014, it seemed Foster was in the perfect place at the perfect time as he was Smith’s kind of player.

But a dislocated shoulder caused him to struggle on the field before he missed six games altogether, and the best deal Foster could find as an unrestricted free agent this past offseason was a one-year, prove-it deal with the Bears.

If you expect Foster to be down at all or bitter about his recent spate of bad luck although you’d be sadly mistaken.

Visiting after practice last week at the Bears minicamp Foster told me, “My Uncle is from Chicago and he’s a big Blackhawks and Cubs fan, Bears fan growing up. It’s crazy man; I love it. I’ve had a chance to go downtown a couple times, and it’s beautiful here and the fans are crazy and I love it.”
