Interns coming and going at Chronicle Summer is underway, and interns are busy at the Kane County Chronicle.

Eoin Cottrell, a Geneva High School graduate and current student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, started an internship with the Chronicle on Monday. Eoin is double majoring in journalism and geography and minoring in Celtic studies.

In addition, he is president of the Society of Professional Journalists UW-Madison chapter and also a national member of the group.

At UW, he is the state editor for The Daily Cardinal student newspaper.

Recapping her internship, Melissa said she really enjoyed the experience.

“I learned so much about journalism,” she wrote in an email to me. “It is so detail-oriented. Even just on my briefs, I would triple check them in case of one comma in the wrong place. ... Overall, I learned so much from this internship, and I met some really great people and it was a great experience.”

LOCAL BRIEFS STC Heritage Center hosts annual pig roast ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Heritage Center is selling tickets to the fourth annual Heritage Celebration Pig Roast and Silent Auction to take place from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the museum, at 215 E. Main St., St. Charles.

This is a 21-and-over event, as there will be alcohol served. The event will feature live music by the Good Ole Boys Band, a pig roast by Dave’s Slow Food and a silent auction that will feature more than 30 gift baskets with items donated from local shops and restaurants.

Tickets to the event are $45, a portion of which is tax deductible, and can be purchased at

the St. Charles History Museum.

Anderson Animal Shelter ready to renovate Seeking almost 100 foster families to take cats, dogs when project begins in fall

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Step into the Anderson Animal Shelter in St. Charles Township and the 40-year-old building virtually rocks from all the barking.

Volunteers and staff on Friday were introducing cats and dogs to families for possible adoption in a small, crowded foyer at the facility near South Elgin. The barking comes thundering from a hallway where the dogs are in kennels. Outside, the parking area was full, and visitors were putting their cars on the side of the driveway.

But new times are coming to the shelter, said executive director Beth Drake, as a $660,000 renovation project will begin this fall. It will transform the facility, so it will meet new models of animal welfare care, as well as expand the parking area and update its aging plumbing.

The shelter is looking for as many as 100 volunteer families willing to foster 130 cats and 40 dogs for one to two months during the renovation, Drake said. Food and veterinary care will be provided.

The shelter operates under a low kill philosophy, and its goal is to eliminate the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals, according to its website. Some animals will be moved to a satellite location – still to be determined – so adoptions can continue while the shelter is closed for renovation, she said.

The caging areas need to updated to be in line with research and advances in animal welfare and housing, she said. For example, cats currently are housed in small stainless steel cages and dogs in chain link kennels – neither is ideal for them, Drake said.

Instead, adoptable cats would be housed with other cats in colonies or large “kitty condos” with perching and sleeping ledges, while adoptable dogs would be housed in small rooms instead of in kennels, she said.

they implemented a variety of activities – such as dog play groups – to increase the adaptability of their shelter animals in advance of its redesign. Dogs that play well with each other are allowed to interact with each other under supervision, allowing them to expend energy and have positive socialization.

“Housing dogs in kennels in shelter away from other dogs – near other dogs but not allowing them to interact with other dogs – is very detrimental to the health of these dogs,” Drake said.

COVER STORY READY FOR A CHALLENGE Nick Koenen headed to the Philippines as a volunteer for the Peace Corps

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Nick Koenen is used to brutal rugby matches and navigating around the Kane County Public Defender’s office in two languages. But he might face his biggest challenge yet overseas.

Koenen, a St. Charles resident, will spend the next 27 months in the Philippines as a volunteer for the Peace Corps, an international service organization of the U.S. He will organize service projects and help residents there with their English.

Koenen, 23, leaves St. Charles on Wednesday for a training session in the Los Angeles area. On July 5, he will leave for Manila, the Philippines capital. While Koenen is abroad, he will have a cellphone but limited access to the Internet. He also will have to beef up on Tagalog, one of the languages spoken in that country.

Koenen’s only other time outside the U.S. was during a weeklong marching band trip to China when he was a St. Charles East High School Wind Ensemble. Koenen admits that he might not fully realize what he’s getting himself into, but he said he knew he wanted to make a difference in the world.

“I always thought of doing something service oriented,” Koenen said.

Koenen, graduated from Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, in December 2013, with a criminal justice degree. He wasn’t sure he wanted to go into law enforcement, but started exploring public service through two summers at the Kane County Public Defender’s Office. As a Spanish minor, Koenen said he enjoyed being able to hear and practice Spanish in the bilingual office.

She served in Tonka in the Pacific. When Koenen began the nearly yearlong application process, he asked to be placed in the Carribean or Latin America to further hone his Spanish. In May, he was offered the Philippines instead.

“This is a challenge,” said Bill Sexton, the rugby coach at Truman State University.

Koenen was a member of the team. “He’s going halfway around the world to a place where he’s going to be tested, and I think he’s really going to enjoy every minute of it.”

Sexton said Koenen knows how to laugh at himself and gets along with his teammates well. He was the captain of the team for three years. As a tackler, Koenen has one of the most demanding roles on the rugby field, but is never afraid to go up against someone bigger than he is, Sexton said.

Sexton, who served as a reference for Koenen, was glad he was accepted into the Peace Corps because the organization appears to scrutinize its

applicants more than in previous years.

Koenen said after his first three months abroad, he will have two days off every month and might group his days together to return to the United States for a visit. He said he does not get homesick often.

His mother, Marcia Koenen, said she and her husband Mark, the St. Charles city administrator, will miss their son. At the same time, they want him to be his own person and build his own life. “[Nick] will return for the better,” Marcia Koenen said.

School Board voices concern on advertising deals Some members raised issue after donation of LED-lighted scoreboard

BATAVIA – Batavia School Board members are voicing concerns about how the district will handle advertising requests for a new scoreboard for the Rotolo Middle School football field.

Advocate Health is donating the LED-lighted scoreboard, valued at $33,000. As part of the donation, Advocate Health would receive the primary advertising space on the scoreboard for the next 10 years.

After the 10-year period has expired, the Batavia Boosters would take over marketing and selling of the advertising space, district officials said.

“Who determines what advertising we are going to have?” Batavia School Board Vice President Gregg Hodge asked at Tuesday’s Batavia School Board meeting. “How do we not show favoritism towards one entity over another? This is a permanent structure. It isn’t like a banner.”

Hodge said Batavia School District 101 in the past did not allow advertising.

Kris Monn, the district’s assistant superintendent for finance, said the board “always has the right to reject any advertising that might go on the sign.”

Board members plan to revisit the issue during an upcoming board policy committee meeting.

Insect makes our daily lives look like they are moving in slow motion GOOD NATURED Pam Otto Editor’s Note: This column is the second in a three-part series on the Fox River’s famous, or perhaps infamous, “River Bugs.”

An Ephemeridae mayfly rests next to its freshly cast skin. Mayflies are the only insects that experience a subimago, or sub-adult, life stage in which they are winged and capable of flight but not fully mature.

I suppose it’s our nature to focus on this one brief part of the mayfly lifecycle. After all, the majority of our own lifespans is spent in adulthood. But for mayflies, as is the case for most insects, it’s the juvenile, or nymph, stage that lasts the longest.

In our area, mayflies spend one to two years in this phase, living at the bottom of well-oxygenated streams and feeding on plant material or other small organisms. Again, as is true for other insects, the nymphs progress through several immature stages known as instars.

Although there is considerable variation between the different kinds of mayflies (611 species in 59 genera and 21 families in North America alone) all share some common traits.

They have three, or sometimes two, caudal filaments – “tails” – protruding from their hind end. They breathe through gills located along either side of the abdomen. And because they are relatively intolerant of pollution, they make excellent

In short, mayfly nymphs are really cool. But what really distinguishes this insect from all others is what happens next.

When the time comes to leave the water, mayflies don’t just molt one last time and fly away. Nope, not these guys.

They are the only insect order with a sub-adult, or subimago, life stage into their maturation process.

As fly fishermen, many of whom are wonderful aquatic entomologists, will tell you, the subimagos, or duns, have wings and can fly, but they are not yet fully mature adults.

Only after a period of anywhere from hours to days (but typically overnight) does the insect molt one more time – wings and all – to emerge as an imago, or adult (spinner in fly fisher-speak).

Like the caddisflies we explored last week, mayflies undergo what’s called synchronized hatching. All the mayfly nymphs of a particular species develop at about the same rate and emerge at about the same time. Mass emerging means mass mating, and an assurance that the cycle will perpetuate year after year.

Any day now, we’ll be experiencing one of these synchronized emergences. In years past, right around July 1 at Pottawatomie Park in St. Charles, we’ve seen a hatch of a species I believe belongs to the Ephemeridae. This family, also known as the burrowing mayflies, have nymphs with legs that are adapted for digging in sand and silt – something that’s present in abundance along that particular stretch of the Fox River.

As adult mayflies go, these individuals are large, over an inch in length, not including their two long, trailing tails.

Unlike the caddisflies and other insects that emerge from the Fox River and make a small splat on your windshield, these River Bugs make the sort of splatter that requires washer fluid and several swipes with the wipers.

Although most humans (fly fisherpersons excepted) may not be too excited about the mayfly hatch, our local fauna probably are tickled pink – especially insect-eating birds such as swallows, swifts and purple martins. Look for them to be out in force, snapping up the bounty that all too quickly will be gone.

For many folks, the daily routine is more like a mad dash from start to finish. Wake up, make the coffee, eat breakfast, get dressed, then hit the ground running – off to the office, the grocery store, the gym; phone calls, meetings, housework, errands, appointments.

It’s a wonder how you get everything done, huh?

Well, if you think you’ve got it rough, consider the life of the mayfly.

In one short, 24-hour burst (or 48 or 72 hours, depending on species and fat stores) mayflies need to emerge from the underwater habitat where they spent their youth, shed their exoskeleton, fly a short distance, avoid predators, shed again, join a mating swarm, fly some more, avoid more predators, find a mate and create the next generation.

No time for wine and candlelight, no sirree. Mating occurs on the fly, literally, and then females head back down to the water to deposit their eggs, either by flying just above the surface or by dipping their abdomen into the water here and there until the supply is exhausted.

It’s a jam-packed agenda, for sure, with one very noticeable item missing. At no time during their adult phase do mayflies have to stop and feed.

In fact, they couldn’t even if they wanted to. Having done all of their eating as aquatic nymphs, adult mayflies lack functional mouthparts.

And so it is that, even under the best conditions, the final item on the mayfly’s to-do list is short and sweet: Die. So famously fleeting is this insect’s adult life that its entire order, Ephemeroptera, reflects its brevity.

LOCAL BRIEFS GENEVA – The Geneva School District’s preschool assessment screening is set for Aug. 29 at Friendship Station, 1415 Viking Drive, Geneva. State law indicates that all children with qualifying disabilities between ages 3 and 5 must be provided with programs appropriate to their needs. The school district must offer an annual screening of these children in order to determine need and eligibility for services.

Eligible children must be preschool age and reside within the district.

School District 304 is providing a free screening to assess development in the following areas: vision and hearing, speech and language, cognitive and motor, and social and emotional.

The screening is optional. It is not a requirement for enrolling in preschool and is not designed to determine kindergarten readiness. Appointments are necessary and students must register in advance.

SUGAR GROVE – The Sugar Grove Corn Boil committee invites community groups to take part in the opening parade that takes place at 5 p.m. July 25 just before the official Corn Boil opening ceremonies.

The festival takes place near 61 Main St., Sugar Grove. Sugar Grove Community PTO groups, scout troops, police, fire, businesses, sports teams, cheerleaders, running clubs, elected officials, library personnel and clubs are invited to join the parade and wear their uniforms.

C

liff Fullhart, a charter member of the Fox Valley Aero Club, makes it out every morning to the club’s field, on Route 38, west of Peck Road, but he said it is not only the joy of flying that drives his consistency.

“I enjoy flying the big airplanes, but in all reality, I really enjoy flying models more,” he said. “It’s more fulfilling, and you are always with people, talking to people about aviation. Whereas, when you’re flying an airplane, you are by yourself.”

The club was launched in 1974, and today has more than 200 members, as diverse in their occupation and talent as their numbers.

The comradery spurs people to travel across the country to attend events centered on model airplanes.

The Fox Valley Aero Club is hosting The Windy City Warbirds and Classics event, one that demonstrated the bonds that people have to the activity as pilots registered from across the Midwest.

World War I models met with World War II model planes, allowing veteran spectators and participants to recall the days when they flew the full-scale airplanes.

“It’s really a great joy when someone comes up to you and say, ‘I remember jumping out of that plane, and it was perfectly good,’ and that’s kind of fun, getting to listen to their stories,” said Carl Buchhuber, a model airplane pilot from Maysville, Wisconsin.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Public Library will host Art of the Imagination Tuesday through July 31 at the library, 1 S. Sixth Ave., St. Charles.

Art of the Imagination is a District 303 Student Art Show featuring drawings, paintings, weavings, photographs, sculptures and digital media.

Lee has sold his dental practice at 34 N. Island Ave. in downtown Batavia, which he first opened in November 1984.

“I really enjoyed getting to know my patients,” Lee said.

“They would get to know me just like I would get to know them.”

Lee, 61, grew up in Batavia. Of his location in the city, he said, “this was a natural spot to open my own office.”

Lee said he felt good about the fact that his practice was consistently named as a top dentist in the Chicago area by patients surveyed by the Chicago Consumer Checkbook magazine.

Dentistry runs in his family. Lee was a third-generation dentist. Before opening

Dr. R. Mark Lee, on his time as a dentist his own practice, he practiced with his father, Robert, and also taught for two years at his alma mater, the University of Illinois Dental School.

He is a 1979 graduate of the school.

Lee’s grandfather, Harry Matthews, also was a dentist.

Lee also spent three years with the U.S. Navy Dental Corps after graduating from the University of Illinois Dental School.

Dr. Chris Szydelko, of Downers Grove, purchased Lee’s practice. He is a fellow graduate of University of Illinois Dental School, having graduated from there in 2006.

Lee isn’t just sitting around in his retirement, however. Lee and his wife, Wendy, will be riding in next month’s RAGBRAI, a seven-day bicycle ride across Iowa. This will be the couple’s fifth time participating in the event.

In the fall, he will be going on a 1,000-mile bicycle ride.

“I’m an avid bike rider,” Lee said. “You just feel really good after a nice vigorous ride. It’s not putting a lot of stress on your body.”

‘Unknown Soldier’ gets new home St. Charles ‘landmark’ sold by longtime owners, moving to Pingree Grove

By MELISSA HUTTER mhutter@shawmedia.com “The Unknown Soldier” is leaving Custom Furniture in St. Charles, due to the store’s closing after 75 years. Wyman “Clint” Carey bought the wooden soldier and is moving it to his barn in Pingree Grove.

The owners of Custom Furniture, Richard and Carolyn Pakan, are closing the store because they said they have decided to retire. Carolyn Pakan said she thinks the residents of St. Charles will be “devastated” the wooden soldier is leaving. She said it was a “landmark” and that people would stop in the middle of Route 25 to take a picture of it.

Andrew Pakan, father of Richard Pakan and original owner of Custom Furniture, found 100-year-old oak trees that had fallen on his property, said store manager John Pakan, son of Richard and Carolyn Pakan. In honor of the upcoming U.S. bicentennial, he decided to craft a Revolutionary War soldier out of the wood, John Pakan said.

He completed the soldier on July 3, 1976, just in time for the bicentennial. He dedicated the structure to unknown soldiers who died in the Revolutionary War and were never

To complete the structure,

Andrew Pakan needed to raise the soldier’s head and place it on top of its body.

Instead of hiring a crane, he did it himself using a rusted tractor, John Pakan said. The head of the soldier was placed on a bucket on top of the tractor, and the tractor started wavering back and forth. “My dad thought he was going to die,” said John Pakan. The head was so heavy it almost flipped over the whole tractor, he said.

The soldier is 18 feet high, and just its head weighs 650 pounds, states the store’s website, www.customfurn.com.

Carey, former president of Pingree Grove, had driven by the soldier many times, and his wife, Brook, saw a newspaper article about the store closing and the soldier needing a new home. Carey said he didn’t want to see the soldier go into decay. He runs small businesses on his barn property in the Heritage District of Pingree Grove, so he thought his barn property, located on Reinking Road in Pingree Grove, would be a good new home for the soldier, he said.

According to Carolyn Pakan, Carey was one of several potential buyers of the soldier. She said she and her husband are “thrilled” to sell it to Carey because they feel that he will lovingly and responsibly take care of the soldier, adding that it takes a lot

of work to keep up and that it has been repainted numerous times.

Carey said he has some friends who restore barns and work with big pieces of timber, and they will work on transporting the soldier. They will erect scaffolding around the wooden soldier and take it down piece by piece, he said.

The pieces will then be driven in a truck to the destination, Carolyn Pakan said.

The transportation work will start in the next couple of weeks, Carey said.

Restoring the soldier will take a lot of work, Carey said.

Carey is thinking about setting up a kickstart campaign to help fund the restoration.

The work involves not only taking the soldier apart piece by piece, but also rebuilding and recarving some parts, he said. Carey has hired carpenters in the winter to make sure that the structure is solid and will last at least another 40 years, he said, adding that the Pakans “know that it’ll be well taken care of.”

Carey plans to unveil the wooden soldier to the Pingree Grove community next spring when it is restored.

“We’re going to be really proud to give it our new home,” Carey said. “It will become part of this town.”

Monsignor Stephen Knox to start at St. Patrick on July 1

By EOIN COTTRELL ecottrell@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Monsignor Stephen Knox, the current pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church in Huntley, has been named the new pastor of St. Patrick Catholic Church in St. Charles.

Knox will move to his new parish July 1.

After graduating from Northern Illinois University, Knox attended St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein. Knox said he first felt the call when he was 20 years old.

“I felt a strong sense of God’s presence, and something in that grace moment was where I first felt the call for priesthood,” Knox said.

Knox said the most rewarding part of his job was Monsignor the opportu- Stephen Knox nity to make a positive impact on people’s lives.

He described the most challenging part of his job as dealing with the diversity of

people’s needs. St. Patrick’s new pastor described being a priest as being a “general practitioner of the soul.” He explained that both human beings and the world we live in are complex and that there are a wide array of problems parishioners encounter.

The Illinois native said when he joins his new parish, he will focus on listening and maintaining presence with his parishioners in order to connect with them and their needs.

When asked about Pope Francis, Knox responded with enthusiasm and said he

is encouraged by the Pope’s leadership and ability to connect with people across the globe.

“People of all different faiths and backgrounds see him as a person of humility, sincerity and great compassion,” Knox said.

Looking back at his last 10 years with the St. Mary’s “family,” Knox said it is often hard for a priest to move. He said he had established a lot of relationships and leaving a parish is a grieving process for both the priest and the family.

parish secretary, said Knox is loved and will be missed by all the parishioners. She also said while he is a lot of fun to work with and has a great sense of humor, he works hard.

“He’s genuine,” Maddox said. “Everything he does is for the parish and for God.” Ultimately, Knox said he is excited to meet his new parish.

“I look at it like the Lord is calling me to a new parish, where I will be able to share the same spiritual gifts to help a new faith community grow,” Knox said.

He also pointed to workers compensation and multiple state taxes as the main roadblocks preventing Illinois businesses from being competitive and growing. Rauner said Illinois charges its businesses fees and excises that other states do not.

“Workers compensation in Illinois is extremely expensive, and it makes Illinois businesses not competitive,” Rauner said. “We need to reduce the tax and regulatory burden on businesses.”

Rauner is challenging incumbent Gov. Pat Quinn in the gubernatorial election scheduled for November.

While this weekend’s event was the first of its kind for Fox Valley, the club unites locally throughout the year fostering the learning and love for aviation.

John Fischer, a club member, said, “we are trying to emulate a larger Warbird and Classics event that is called the Warbirds and Classic Alliance. There are 200 members in the club, and they travel in from all over with one thing in mind – they all love Warbirds and classic aviation.”

Installing a privacy update THE WASHINGTON POST A unanimous Supreme Court declared Wednesday that, in the face of new technology that has reshaped daily life, it will not “mechanically” apply old legal doctrines that offer Americans too little protection in novel digital circumstances.

The justices ruled that law enforcement officers cannot rummage through the electronic contents of an arrestee’s cellphone.

In most cases, the officers must get a warrant first.

This is an unambiguously sensible decision, showing that the court will not remain inert as the country strikes anew the balance between privacy and security. Rather, it will bound the debate with serious, basic limits on electronic search and seizure.

The justices considered two cases in which police officers confiscated and examined the phones of two men they had arrested. In one case, information on a suspect’s phone led officers to search his apartment, where they found drugs, a gun and ammunition. In the other, officers inspected photos, videos and text stored on a suspect’s phone to link him to a gang shooting.

Both men claimed that, since the police had not obtained warrants, taking the electronic evidence violated their Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable search and seizure.

To press that claim, their lawyers had to overcome several Supreme Court precedents that gave law enforcement officers relatively wide latitude to search through material on or around an arrestee’s

person.

Officers can look at physical notes, photos and other records that happen to be in a suspect’s pocket – or anywhere within his or her reach – during an arrest.

But the court rightly refused to draw a simplistic analogy between the physical objects a person can carry and the vast storehouse of digital material accessible through the average mobile phone. “That is like saying a ride on horseback is materially indistinguishable from a flight to the moon,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the court.

“Both are ways of getting from point A to point B, but little else justifies lumping them together.”

Justice Roberts noted that, absent any restrictions on browsing through arrestees’ cellphones, officers would have access to massive amounts of information. Phone hard drives can contain galleries of pictures, thousands of pages of documents, hundreds of videos and email records dating back months or more. The government’s old justifications for warrantless searches of arrestees were protecting police officers’ safety and securing evidence from destruction.

Neither can justify unsupervised intrusion into a smartphone trove.

What’s next? The court raised concerns Wednesday about giving police free access to information Americans store on remote servers in “the cloud.” This suggests that the justices may have more to say about legal protections for cloud-based information, another place where analogies to old legal norms may prove inadequate.

A gut-wrenching reminder Train-related accidents are “one of the most avoidable accidents there are,” according to Mark Davis, spokesman with Union Pacific.

That premise is based on people exercising sound judgment to stay away from tracks in the first place.

Sadly, that is not always the case. On May 31, Parker Wolfsmith, an eighth-grader at Harter Middle School, died after being struck by a Union Pacific train in Maple Park.

Last week, Maple Park Police Chief Mike Acosta said Wolfsmith likely was engaging in “breezing,” an ill-advised, thrill-seeking activity in which people try to come close enough to a moving train to feel a breeze.

What a terrible way for a

young life to come to an end.

Parents and educators in the area should point to this tragic incident as an attention-getter, underscoring the danger of lingering near railroad tracks.

Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez said he would like to see more education in area schools about safety near railroad tracks.

“I think we should do it at a young age, too,” Perez said.

“Put it in their mind in elementary and middle school.”

A form also is on the site, through which schools and organizations can request a presentation on railroad

safety.

As avoidable as casualties along train tracks are, that is no longer the case once a person – intentionally or accidentally – is in an oncoming train’s path. Davis said it takes a 100-car train traveling 60 mph about a mile and a half to stop.

Instances of people pushing their luck around trains happen more than you might think.

The accident that ended Wolfsmith’s life at age 14 is a gut-wrenching reminder of the potentially dire consequences.

“We’d hate for them to get hurt,” Davis said. “Our train crews day in and day out see people that take chances, and for them, it’s a very sinking feeling that people do that.”

Geneva residents west of Randall Road had better get their children accustomed to seeing coyotes trapped in the snares and dying in the backyards. The howling of a trapped coyote is terrific and can be heard for miles. Leave the coyotes alone. When there is no food, garbage cans left open or small dogs unleashed, they will leave.

Our family is grateful I would like to thank the young man and cab driver that took my nephew to the emergency room after an early bad incident Sunday morning.

Doing nothing to stop it One of the letters in last week’s Sound Off was well stated. As a country, we are allowing illegal immigrants to take from us as they bring more family members into our country.

‘COULDN’T BE PROUDER’ St. Charles North makes charge as 7-on-7 concludes

HEATON – Football is a game of inches, and St. Charles North found that out the hard way Friday at the Red Grange Classic.

Trailing by six points with under a minute left against Class 5A state runner-up Montini with a trip to the final four on the line, North quarterback Nathan Didier floated a spiral down the sideline to a streaking Jayson Reckards.

Squeezed between the sideline and perfect coverage, Reckards elevated and hauled in the bomb near the pylon of the end zone, seemingly the goahead touchdown.

But the referees ruled Reckards was out of bounds, and North would turn the ball over on downs – eventually losing to the Broncos. Even with the defeat, head coach Rob Pomazak was pleased with North being in a position to be one of the final four teams in the 7-on-7 event.

“To have a kid make a catch in the corner of the end zone to win a ballgame, whether it’s in or out, that’s the kind of players we’re looking for,” Pomazak said. “We couldn’t be prouder of this bunch.”

The North Stars jumped on Montini early, and led, 11-0, after two defensive stops and a touchdown on their opening offensive possession. Montini marched right back, however, with its go-ahead touchdown coming with just 43 seconds remaining in the game.

The North offense had just one interception on the day, thanks in large part to the play of Didier. North utilized a heavy dose of rollouts to move the pocket and create opportunities for Didier and he responded with crisp passes and sound decision-making for much of the day.

“He’s the exact kind of kid we look for in this program,” Pomazak said. “We don’t like to highlight individual efforts, but I feel like we had to today

because he did a great job.”

North finished in the top six by going 3-2 on the day, beating Downers Grove South, Lincoln-Way East and Huntley, while losing to Montini and Nequa Valley.

“It shows that skill-wise we can play with any team,” said Didier, who said he “of

course” thought Reckards was in bounds on the game-deciding play against Montini.

“Overall, as a team, we played great.”

For a team that just started summer practices less than two weeks ago, Pomazak was ecstatic the team was able to go through crunch-time mo-

ments together during the tournament – which will help foster chemistry within the squad.

“You can never get that team atmosphere until you’re in a competitive atmosphere,” Pomazak said. “That’s what this does, that’s what the Red Grange does.”

Batavia eliminated early: Batavia was able to avenge a loss from Thursday’s pool play, but not much else Friday at the Red Grange Classic. The Bulldogs were eliminated in three games, with a lone victory coming against Naperville North.

Batavia lost to Naperville North, 19-5, during pool play but turned the tables on the Huskies on Friday in a near-flawless 29-3 win. After an interception put Batavia down, 3-2, the Bulldogs ended the game on a 27-0 run and stayed alive for a third contest.

“It’s just a weird format; you never know,” Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron said. “I think we’re starting to see where the openings are happening and seeing what’s going on.”

The victory against Naperville North was sandwiched by a pair of losses to Barrington and Waubonsie Valley, respectively. Batavia squandered an early 12-2 lead and lost, 18-12, to Barrington, and the Bulldogs couldn’t overcome an 18-point deficit to the Warriors in an 18-10 loss.

“Our defense has played great all tournament. Offensively, we lacked consistency,” said Piron, whose team is coming off a 6A state championship. “We do some pretty complex stuff. We’re not trying to manufacture a victory here, we’re trying to run an actual offense like we would in a regular game, just without the run game.”

Batavia finished the twoday event with a record of 2-6.

Piron said it’s hard to improve on a game-to-game basis with such a small interval between contests, but that film from the past two days will be “critical” to his team’s development moving forward.

“I have no problem with anything that went on. That’s just how these things go,” Piron said. “I’d say this is onethird of real football and in this third of football, we’re pretty close to an awful lot of good teams.”

Gentry gets serious about taking game to next level “That’s one of the things this summer I’ve been working on. I can get to the basket, I just need to finish it. So when I’m missing the ones I think I should be making, sometimes it gets to me a little bit. I just need to keep working, stay in the gym, keep working on finishing.”

Gentry’s continued emergence helped the Saints to an unbeaten run through the Geneva Summer League until the Saints lost to St. Charles North on Wednesday in the semifinal round of the league-ending tournament.

In addition to focusing on his finishes, Gentry said East assistant coach and former NBA player Everette Stephens is mentoring him on his pull-up jumper, which could become a dynamic weapon since defenders tend to sag off him for fear of being exploited off the bounce.

Saints coach Pat Woods said he thinks Gentry “can play at any level” and is confident he’ll find a strong fit, D-I or otherwise.

“He’s a good student, he’s a good student of the game, so I think he’s going to have a lot of opportunities when all is said and done,” Woods said.

already has an offer from Division II Lewis University – but how much additional interest he generates this summer will be an interesting case study in college recruiting.

From a skill-set and intangibles standpoint, Gentry is a D-I-caliber point guard.

He has tremendous ball-handling ability and floor vision, crafty instincts and is an above-average shooter.

He plays with uncommon flair, and is one of the most entertaining high school basketball players the Tri-Cities has produced in recent years.

But Gentry is small, by D-I standards. Being an undersized guard was a recruiting question mark for Gentry’s former Saints backcourt runningmate Dom Adduci, who wound up as a recruited walk-on at Drake, and the sub-6-foot Gentry is an inch or two shorter than Adduci.

Gentry plays AAU basketball for the Illinois Stars, with July looming as a key evaluation period to show he can thrive against strong competition.

He said he’d like to close in on a college decision in the coming months, preferably before his senior season.

Cole Gentry isn’t known as a hothead, but the St. Charles East senior point guard flashed a temper at times Wednesday night during the Geneva Summer League tournament.

On a few occasions, Gentry gave the padding behind the basket in Geneva’s Mack Olson gym a thwack when the ball didn’t roll his way.

It was an unseasonably mild night, not the usual baking heat associated with summer basketball, so Gentry’s reactions weren’t a result of being overheated.

Rather, Gentry feels a sense of urgency to elevate his already impressive game, with the coming weeks likely to go a long way in determining his basketball course.

Gentry, attending a basketball camp at Division I American University this weekend in Washington, D.C., is especially focused on finishing around the rim to take greater advantage of his ability to break down defenders off the dribble.

“That’s one of the things this summer I’ve been working on,” Gentry said.

“I can get to the basket, I just need to finish it. So when I’m missing the ones I think I should be making, sometimes it gets to me a little bit. I just need to keep working, stay in the gym, keep working on finishing.

“I wasn’t too mad, just more disappointed in myself. It’s just one of those things I’ve got to keep getting better on, finishing with contact, especially.”

GENEVA – A trio of 1984 Cubs transformed a Cougars conference room into a big league clubhouse Thursday with lefty Steve Trout’s eight magic words: “Who’s got the cards? Who’s got the chips?”

With that, Trout joined former teammates Gary Matthews and Lee Smith in joking, debating and reflecting for 20 unfettered minutes before fulfilling other duties as part of the Cougars’ Chicago Sports Night.

How would the National League East champion ’84 club have fared against Detroit had it advanced to the World Series?

Why did Smith enjoy traveling to Montreal so much? Where is reserve infielder Tom Veryzer?

Matthews, Smith and Trout may have fallen short in their bid for a title 30 years ago, but here’s a look at how they won an informal interview: • Only the eventual world champion Detroit Tigers won more regular season games than the Cubs in 1984, 104 to 96.

The Cubs, however, were unable to do their part to clinch the dream matchup after squandering a 2-0 series lead to San Diego in the best-of-five National League Championship Series.

Matthews, the left fielder nicknamed “Sarge,” contends the Cubs would have repeated as NL East champs in 1985 had injuries not beset the pitching staff down the stretch.

“We would have won it that year if we had stayed healthy.

There’s no question we would have won it again,” Matthews said. “We had already intimidated the whole National League East. They were done from the year before. If we don’t get hurt. … It’s just something about, again, you know, with the Cubs

First baseman Jacob Rogers, who earned Midwest League Player of the Week last week, was hitting .450 (9 for 20) in the second half entering Friday. He has four extra-base hits and three RBIs in that span.

Rogers’ surge coincides with his parents’ visit from Clearwater, Florida, to see him play.

“It’s been nice having them around,” Rogers said.

Who’s hot, part II Right-handed reliever James Pugliese pitched a perfect ninth in Thursday’s win and has a 1.23 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 22 innings in his past 10 appearances.

“I feel good. Everything feels normal,” Pugliese said.

“Just keeping the ball down, and offspeed’s working well.”

A former longtime Philadelphia Phillies broadcaster, Matthews also channeled a conversation with Cubs Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg, now the Phillies manager, about the Padres series.

“And I asked Sanberg, how often does he think of that ’84 playoff game, and he said, ‘Like every day,’ ” Matthews said.

“Because it never leaves you.

Because we know that, really,

realistically, they were the better team that won, but we were the better team. We would have had a dogfight against Detroit.

Umpires ejected Advanced-A Daytona’s music operator from a 2012 game for playing “Three Blind Mice” over the PA system in response to a controversial call against the Cubs.

After his team’s three-game series against Wisconsin this week, Cougars manager Mark Johnson might have opted for a less sardonic song to salute the men in blue.

Johnson lauded the work of would-be replacement ump Jon Lindstrom, a Homewood native who was hired to fill in for Midwest League regular Brandon Butler, presumably out with a knee injury. When doctors cleared Butler shortly after Lindstrom agreed to terms, the Cougars-Timber Rattlers series suddenly rated a rare three-man crew.

Andrew Chesnut also was scheduled to work with Butler.

“To do the right thing, they just said go ahead and work the series as a three-man crew, which is nice,” Johnson said. “It should be a three-man crew throughout the minor leagues. That’s a no-brainer. It really helps out.”

Now Johnson is looking to return the favor to Lindstrom, speaking with Cougars general manager Curtis Haug about how to endorse Lindstrom for fulltime work.

Heading into its fifth year of competition, the Northern Illinois Big 12 already has a new look.

With Dixon (Big Northern) and Streator (Interstate Eight) departing the league in the 2014-15 school year, the conference is down to just 10 teams.

There will still be East and West divisions, with Rochelle moving to the West, leaving Kaneland, DeKalb, Morris, Sycamore and Yorkville in the East.

For now, the league doesn’t have the number of teams it would like, but the plan is to eventually add two more schools to get back to 12.

“We’ve got to find that right fit of size, and right now our conference covers a lot of ground. Travel is always a concern when somebody comes in,” Sycamore athletic director Chauncey Carrick said. “We’ve got to consider travel, size of school. Somebody really small’s not going to want to come in. Nobody really wants someone ginormous either.

“The area we cover, we don’t have a lot of options.

We’re trying to keep our options open and see what happens. We’re optimistic, but we also know we’re going to move forward if we don’t [add teams].”

The new setup makes things more complicated when it comes to football.

In the old six-team division setup, each school played five division games, two crossover games and two nonconference contests.

Now, the first three weeks of the schedule will feature nonconference games, while weeks 4 through 8, teams will play their four division games with a conference cross-

over mixed in and Week 9 will be a crossover for every team, Carrick said.

The conference could have gone with one 10-team league, where each team would play the other nine programs once, but felt divisions was the better option.

“There were a couple of rationales behind it. We’re still looking for teams and expansion. We wanted to show people that we’re willing to work with what we’ve got and keep that divisional system in place as long as we can,” Carrick said. “Another thing is, footballwise with the way our league is, we thought there may be a possibility that we could get more teams playoff-eligible.

“If you have a successful nonconference season, if you can win your three nonconferences and you can win two conference games that would make you eligible for an at-large bid.”

DeKalb coach Matt Weckler was part of a 10team format when he was the coach at Belvidere of the NIC-10 Conference.

He said he would like to play in a bigger conference with at least seven programs, but said going with 10 teams had its drawbacks as well – playing the same teams over and over, schools never saw anything new.

One drawback Weckler mentioned in terms of going with five teams is finding nonconference opponents.

Kaneland’s nonconference schedule includes a season-opening visit to Brooks before fellow Chicago Public League member Marshall visits Peterson Field for the home opener in Week 2.

Rich South of the Southland Conference will play at Kaneland in Week 3.

both are scheduled for Week 8, one week shy of their onetime staple spot at the end of the regular season.

Kaitlyn Waslawski will be a St. Charles North senior in the fall. This week, she got a jump on classmates by already outlining her college plans. A star second baseman for the North softball team, Waslawski “committed” to Ivy League member Princeton as she visited the school’s New Jersey campus for a team camp. In the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat, Waslawski, the owner of a 5.7 GPA on a 5.0 scale, discusses her decision and other topics with Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley. Here’s an edited transcript:

Ivy League commitments are a little different. What went on with the timetable?

Yeah, the Ivy League process is a lot different than just a normal college softball recruiting process.

So it’s a lot longer. So I’ve been interested in the school for awhile and I’ve been to several camps. There is no technical verbal commitment for Ivy League, but the agreement was in the fall I’d be applying to Princeton, and the coach will be supporting my application. So that’s the terminology that goes with it. So that happened Tuesday morning. …

I was [at Princeton] Monday and Tuesday for the camp.

When did they first show interest in you?

Weekend Chit-chat with NORTH SECOND BASEMAN KAITLYN WASLAWSKI Late in the summer after my freshman year was the first time they ever watched me play, and in the past two years, I’ve been continually going to their camps. And so it’s kind of been throughout the years. Like I said, it’s more of an extended process than normal college recruiting.

You’ve played second base for the North Stars. Will you play second base for the Tigers?

Um, it’ll actually be for outfield. … I play second base for North, and that’s one of my secondary positions for travel. I play center field … for the Wasco Diamonds.

Has the travel tournament schedule heated up yet?

Any family history up there?

Yeah, we’re in the middle of a really busy month, actually. We’re in Oklahoma City now and we’re going straight to Colorado on Monday, and we’re going to finish the season in Alabama [in early August]. So we’ve got a busy summer. …

I like traveling a lot. Obviously I’ve been really busy, but I’ve gotten used to it, kind of.

I have family in the area, but no family history at the school.

Does that allow for a window for a family vacation?

I know you’ve still got a year of high school left, but has the Ivy League mystique sunk in at all?

It’s not on the schedule right now. We’re going to lots of cool places for softball, so that’s kind of turned into our vacation.

Yeah, I’m extremely excited. It’s kind of unbelievable at this point, but it’s something I’ve worked at for, obviously, more than a year now. So I’m still really excited about it. Hasn’t really hit me yet. … I’m still undecided in my major, so I haven’t figured out quite

What’s on your summer reading list?

Hmm, my summer reading list. … I actually really enjoy [reading], I pretty much read anything anybody gives me. But I don’t have a book right now that I could name for you.

Kane County Cougars reverse mini Beloit curse KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BELOIT, Wisconsin – At long last, a win in Beloit.

The Cougars on Friday won for the first time at Pohlman Field in seven times this season, defeating the Snappers, 3-2, in 10 innings to open a four-game series.

Designated hitter Shawon Dunston Jr. singled home Jake Hannemann for the eventual winning run. Hannemann opened the Kane County 10th with a base hit of his own.

The Cougars improved to a Midwest League-best 51-27, but until Friday had not solved Beloit (32-46) on its home field. The Snappers outscored the Cougars,

11-4, to sweep a three-game series from May 12 to 14. Things were much tighter in the final series before the All-Star break, with Beloit taking all three games by one run.

Both teams scored twice in the first inning. Yasiel Balaguert and Jacob Rogers both notched run-scoring singles to center field. The Cougars loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth on two walks around a Rogers single, but were unable to score.

Juan Paniagua earned the victory with three innings of two-hit, six-strikeout relief. Fellow right-hander Pierce Johnson worked the first seven innings and allowed only one hit, a tworun home run.

‘Zim’ made others tumble without raising his fists • COUGARS Continued from page 26 served as manager Jim Frey’s third-base coach in 1984. A veteran of 66 years in baseball, Zimmer died June 4 at 83.

“If there’s a thing where it was good cop, bad cop, he was the good cop. All the time,” Matthews said.

“And he had an infectious personality, really liked to win. Didn’t always take it serious, but he was the type of guy that would be back-to-back to you regardless of if he thought he could help in that fight or not, like he did with the Yankees. He was just a good baseball guy.”

Matthews referred to an incident in the 2003 American League Championship Series in which Zimmer, then the New York Yankees’ bench coach, charged at Boston Red Sox righty Pedro Martinez in a bench-clearing brawl.

Martinez summarily threw Zimmer to the ground.

“Zim” often made others tumble without raising his fists.

“I used to love to be behind him and [broadcaster] Lou Boudreau going through customs in Montreal,” Smith said. “You know, you’ve got Boudreau with the metal hip and Zim with the plate in his head.

The thing’s buzzing. It was always fun.”

• Asked about any perceived change in atmosphere as Wrigley Field celebrates the centennial of its opening this season, Trout said, “Beer prices sure did go up.”

Later in his career, Smith experienced the side of Cubs fans that would rather have doused him with an Old Style than toasted him with one when he closed for the rival St. Louis Cardinals in the early 1990s.

“To come back, it was so different to go to Wrigley as a Cardinal and have home fans. And then the Cubs would come to St.

Louis, and they’d have home fans,” Smith said.

“And I’m like, ‘Where the [heck] is the home field at?’ It was different, you know.”

Third all-time on baseball’s career saves list with 478, Smith also played on both ends of one of baseball’s other iconic rivalries, bookending his St. Louis stint by pitching for the Red Sox and Yankees.

“That was just bragging rights, the Cubs[-Cardinals] thing, man,” Smith said. “But the [darn] Red Sox-Yankees thing was hatred, man.”

• Matthews remains involved with the Phillies organization, Smith is a roving pitching instructor with the San Francisco Giants and “Rainbow” Trout “seems to know everybody,” in Smith’s estimation.

Maintaining ties with one another and other former teammates, then, is made easy. “[Heck], everybody thinks I work for the Cubs because I’m in town so much,” said Smith, who added he also likes to “go to the rooftops and harass some people” and visit with friends on the Wrigley grounds crew.

The consensus was that most of the ’84 Cubs other than Veryzer seem to keep the baseball fraternity at least an arm’s length.

Trout said he recalls Veryzer telling him once about aspirations to run a liquor store in New Jersey – just something simple since Veryzer knew he’d never be a megastar.

Wikipedia, a source sometimes shakier than Carlos Marmol in the ninth inning, reports Veryzer lives with his family in Islip, New York.

Courting of a superstar begins

That’s the only question that needs to be asked when free agent Carmelo Anthony meets with the Bulls brass next week, as the courting of a superstar begins.

After Thursday night’s baby steps to reshape the roster by trading up for Doug McDermott, general manager Gar Forman and coach Tom Thibodeau answered that question with catch phrases like “the great city of Chicago’’ and “the culture.”

Hopefully they have more up their sleeves than that.

Here’s a reality check that myopic Chicago fans need to get a grasp of: There are two franchises that can pull free agents on the idea of culture and history, and the Bulls aren’t one of them. It’s still NBA royalty in Boston and Los Angeles, while everyone else is just a passing fad.

The fact that Michael Jordan played here? Stop. The only thing attracted by that Jordan statue in front of the United Center are pigeons and tourists – in that order.

If the idea of playing in Jordan’s shadow was so attractive, free agents would be flocking to Charlotte. They aren’t.

So again, what are you selling to Anthony?

“What we’re always going to sell is obviously Chicago, the great city of Chicago, our fan base, the culture that’s been created here, the success we’ve had up to this point, and the feeling we have is we can continue to improve and continue to have great success moving forward,” Forman said. “So we feel we’ve got a lot to sell, but again it

really is going to be just a really fluid situation and we’ve mapped out a number of different ways this can go. Some of it we control, some of it we don’t.”

Then make it simple.

Selling point No. 1 is Thibodeau. Ask Kevin Garnett. Ask Paul Pierce. Ask Joakim Noah.

Any NBA player with any sort of beating in his chest still wants to be coached up and pushed until his maximum talent is pouring out of him like sweat.

That’s what Thibodeau offers Anthony.

He will make him the best basketball player he could be.

Selling point No. 2 is Noah.

The All-Star center was the best player on the Bulls roster last season. On a team competing for the chip, however, Noah should be that No. 3 guy. The one that does all the dirty work that allows superstars to be superstars.

If Forman and Co. are smart, don’t even bring up Derrick Rose to Anthony, besides the usual medical update of, “Derrick’s great.”

Rose is not a selling point. He and his knees are simply an added bonus these days. Even Thibodeau seemed to realize that.

“The thing that is going to make it attractive is all the players that are along with Derrick,” Thibodeau said. “We have a good team, a great city, great organization, and we have a team that has depth. …

But the real value is in our team.

When you look at Joakim, and you look at Taj [Gibson], Jimmy Butler, Mike Dunleavy, and now you add a guy like Doug … I think that’s what makes it attractive.”

Maybe so, but it starts with the coach. Anthony now has to decide if that’s good enough.

Teen picks up win at Hawkeye Downs Speedway

Fourteen-year-old Austin Kunert of Batavia picked up another feature win June 13 at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Kunert started seventh in an 18-car field and took the lead on Lap 12 and held the position to the checkered flag. He was racing in the Dublin City Pub Feature race with his Kings Express 1934 Chevy Coupe Legend. Kunert has moved into the top 10 in National Points with the Inex 600 Legend series in North Carolina.

Family reunion in New Hampshire brings back memories I learned a few things on my summer vacation. For one, it is possible to sleep three hours, fly to New Hampshire, tromp all over an unfamiliar cemetery in an unfamiliar city, find the grave of your Irish born great-grandmother (actually, my son spotted it – way to go, Noah!), buy food to feed 31 for a whole weekend and then shoe-horn it and two lanky teenagers into a VW Beetle – and then, with their help, begin hosting a family reunion in an unfamiliar cabin equipped with a sketchy stove and other random kitchen supplies, a mere 24 hours later.

Yup, it can be done. It’s not for the faint of heart, mind you, but it can be done. But only because my kids are awesome. In the over five years I’ve written this column, I don’t believe I’ve ever come right out and said that, but they are. Their dad wasn’t along on this trip as he’d just barely returned from a twoweek teaching trip to China, but I knew I could pull this off with my kids’ help.

For example, at the food co-op I handed Noah a recipe and told him to hunt up all of the necessary ingredients for my black bean soup.

So what if a couple of the cans of black beans were actually flavored with bacon (and one didn’t even contain black beans at all, haha), the soup turned out OK! Especially once I got the burners re-lit. In the meantime, my capable kids sprinted back and forth to a neighboring cabin several dozen yards away and got the cornbread baked, mere moments be-

Another thing I learned? I’m not too old to use a rope swing. No-siree. Noah and my cousins spotted one as they paddled across the lake, and as they sat in their kayaks discussing just how totally awesome it would be to use it, the swing’s owner appeared.

Not only did she volunteer its use, but she pointed out the nearby diving board, which Holly and I also got to use when the boys brought us back the next morning. Even more fun, perhaps, was laughing ’til I cried, when Holly showed me the video of my maiden voyage off said rope swing after the last of our company departed on Sunday afternoon and we collapsed in a giddy heap on a couch in our cabin.

We giggled some more, a little while later, when, during a drive up the hill on our quest for a stunningly scenic view of the White Mountains, we happened upon a sheep who was all “baaa” and no bite when he crossed our path and refused to budge. On our way back down the mountain we learned that his name is “Circus.” What a funny little guy.

Needy plants know …

When friends ask what the trick is to a great garden, my simple response is, “It’s all about the soil.”

As gardeners, we wish it was just as easy as “fixing” the soil, which involves shoveling no end of compost, careful watering and of course fertilizer.

I find myself amazed at the variety of fertilizer you might find on the shelf at the store, so it is no wonder people are

Unfortunately, there is no one answer, but the information on the bag of fertilizer, as well as information about the plant, can help steer you toward the best choice.

The most scientific way to address this

problem is to send off your soil for testing, and the results will provide you with specific instructions as to what type and how much fertilizer to apply. As you become familiar with your soil and plants, you can also select one for yourself. The key is to study the numbers on the bag, commonly referred to as N-P-K (i.e.

20-0-5).

We also learned that it is, in fact, quite possible to enjoy watching a World Cup soccer game on a cellphone.

What a good sport Noah is. Our cabin, thank goodness, was not equipped with a television, but who needed one when there was plenty to entertain us right outside our front door? Like a tranquil lake, tons of green, an enormous, star-filled sky (thanks to the lack of light pollution, I was able to spot two shooting stars!), and night music more soothing than anything on any iPod. And loons, oh, the loons, who sang their mournful song as the sun set and floated and fished and fed the wee ones on their backs. My son fished, too. It was pure bliss to watch him, from the comfort of my cozy bed, as the early morning fog lifted all around him as he fished from the dock. My grateful heart swells again just thinking about it.

Yes indeed, we’re already plotting our return to this magical place.

After we packed up the next morning (and the kids attempted to cook a S’more on the hood of the Volkswagen – Holly says it was tasty!) we drove through Vermont toward Grandma’s in upstate New York. When the kids were toddlers we lived in Maine and made this trip many times, so we revisited our favorite pitstops along the way.

Including one at the Quechee Gorge, where we hiked and I took a refreshing quick dip in the 165 foot deep water of the Ottauquechee River (I’d forgotten it was that deep!). Next, Holly and I

spent a few minutes window shopping in oh-so-quaint Woodstock, and then we made our last stop, at the White Cottage snack bar. I got to savor, once more, their amazing fried clams as I dipped my toes into the river that flows by its back door.

At Grandma’s, who is planning a move, we packed boxes and played Boggle and ran errands and cleaned out the garage. The kids discovered, there, a pair of apparently orphaned, newborn mice, whom Holly and I delivered to a wildlife rehabilitator (we watched her feed a baby bat, too!). At Grandma’s new house we measured for appliances and then measured my children, whose latest heights are now recorded on the doorjamb of her new kitchen. She’s having new counters and flooring installed, but the kids and I scrubbed her cupboards and removed age-old contact paper. Two layers of the stuff. Did you know that you can use a hairdryer to loosen it? Thanks to the Internet, we learned that, too.

Last, but not least, we enjoyed a meal of my mother’s chicken and rice, a staple of my youth and the perfect comfort food for my last night in my childhood home. Yup, times, they are a changin’, but we’ll have fun learning how to journey through them, too.

The bus, which runs on vegetable oil collected from restaurants as it travels, will be at the Pushing the Envelope Farm, 1700 Averill Road (between Kautz and Kirk Roads) in Geneva, at 1 p.m.

Children of all ages are invited to visit the bus and the farm’s goats and chickens and to learn about worm composting, solar energy, and other ecological projects.

There is a suggested donation of $10 per family or $5 a person.

Pushing the Envelope Farm is a community farm and education center, rooted in Jewish tradition that serves the greater Fox Valley and Chicago region.

The Topsy Turvy Bus runs on vegetable oil collected from restaurants as it tours the country. Adults and children are invited to visit the bus, see farm animals and participate in environmental projects while the bus is at the Pushing the Envelope Farm in Geneva on Sunday, July 13.

The farm’s 14-acre site features community gardens, small-scale production of organic market crops by environmentally responsible growers, berry patches, wooded areas and campgrounds. There also are dairy goats, laying hens and

honey bees.

These numbers refer to the percentage of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium per pound. Nitrogen promotes leaf and stem growth. Phosphorus is involved with flowering, fruiting and root development.

Potassium encourages root development and hardiness. Extension “Plant Datasheets” will provide valuable information on the nutrient needs of your specific plants.

The N-P-K value provides insight into both the purpose and potency of a fertilizer. Chemical lawn fertilizers have values such as 40-0-5, providing high quantities of nitrogen, no phosphorus, and a bit of potassium.

This aligns with our desire of strong top growth on the lawn and the ease of only needing a 50 pound bag to cover an entire lawn. More delicate perennials might benefit from an application of 1-0-0 cow manure.

Just like medicine, strongest is not always the best. Incorrectly

applied, fertilizers with high N-P-K can burn plants or cause plants to “over-react,” producing undesired results. Generally, more organic sources of fertilizer have lower values and pose less risk of shock to plants.

Fertilizing is a critical element of gardening, but also a tricky one to master. With the wide array of fertilizers available, combined with varying needs of plants, the whole issue can quickly become confusing.

This is where the extension resources can provide guidance on selecting the right fertilizer for your situation.

Plant Datasheets can outline the feeding requirements of plants and may even advise against any additional fertilizer beyond compost. The key is to use the resources and learn the best course instead of grabbing any bag of fertilizer on the shelf.

More Content Now It’s not quite a staple of American cinema, but road trip movies certainly have legions of fans. They usually feature a couple of guys or a bickering family, but the genre got a big positive bump a couple of decades ago when Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis hopped in a convertible and ran from the law in “Thelma & Louise.”

Sarandon is back behind the wheel in “Tammy,” this time accompanied by Melissa McCarthy in a twogals-hit-the-road comedy.

Co-written by McCarthy and her husband, Ben Falcone, and directed by Falcone, it’s the story of down-on-herluck Tammy (McCarthy) who, after a series of personal setbacks – including discovering the philanderings of her husband – decides to leave her small town and start really living life. Her only two problems: a lack of funds, and the fact that her traveling companion is her often drunk, usually randy grandmother Pearl (Sarandon). Both women spoke about the film last week in Los Angeles.

Ed Symkus: Susan, you’re 67 and Melissa is 43, and you’re playing her grandmother. How were you approached to take the part?

Susan Sarandon: Ben and Melissa called me, and prepared me for the script. Then I got the script, and thought it was a lot of fun, but I was doing another movie, and I didn’t quite understand what reality we would be in.

So we had another call about it, and I was very excited about the way they worked.

We texted little pictures of possible looks and figured out the age thing – actually Pearl wasn’t much older than I actually am, she just doesn’t have my makeup and hair people. But [Ben and Melissa] are both incredibly talented, and it would be very different. I didn’t quite know what was going to

Melissa McCarthy: On one of our first phone calls, you said Pearl seemed like a little old granny with glasses and a crocheted sweater and an up-do bun, and I said, “Oh, no, she has raging problems with alcohol, and she sleeps around.” And you said, “OK, we’ll be fine.”

Sarandon: I’m bad at math, and I didn’t think about the ages. It actually makes sense if my character had a baby at 16, and the character of my daughter had a baby when she was 16. It’s totally possible. I was just happy to be able to do something like this. It’s very liberating to look that bad. We just accentuated everything that you would normally hide, so it didn’t matter if I was sweaty or the lighting was bad. That was kind of cool.

Ed Symkus: Melissa, you wrote the script with your husband. Where did the idea for the story come from?

McCarthy: Ben came down-

stairs one morning, just having woken up and said: “I had a weird dream. You go on a road trip with your grandmother and she drinks and she sleeps around. I’m gonna go write that movie.”

And I said, “All right.”That dream was around six years ago, and that’s how it began.

He always says things, and I say, “That sounds great!”

I just agree with him, and it all works out. But we had been working on it for years.

I don’t know if we ever really thought it could make the next step. But then when it started happening, and we found out that certain actors were actually reading it, I was physically coming apart at the seams. It’s still dreamy to me.

Ed Symkus: Susan, did you have any thoughts of “Thelma & Louise” while you were making this?

Sarandon: We actually didn’t think about it till we started doing press. They brought a car and I said, “You know, this might

remind people of that other movie.” But it was so different.

Ed Symkus: Have there been plans for you and Geena Davis to work together again?

Susan: I’d love to work with her again. They had kind of knocked around some ideas of a sequel to “Thelma & Louise,” but they were so ridiculous. I remember at one point saying, “But what would WE do?”

And somebody said, “You’d collect a big check is what you’d do.”

But I really don’t know how you would resurrect them. And even if we did, we’d have to do something sitting down because when we’re standing, Geena’s like a foot taller than me. That’s why the car worked in “Thelma & Louise.” We were kind of on the same level.

I’m shrinking and she’s still 6 foot 1.

Dear Abby: I’m 17 and a junior in high school. My family has recently been hit with hard times. We lost our home and are living in a motel, and I am struggling with depression. I haven’t attended school since last September. However, I am feeling well enough to the point where I’d like to start attending school again.

I would be willing to take more than six periods and, if necessary, I would be willing to attend summer school. I want to graduate from high school, but I don’t know if that’s possible.

My mother has never been OK with any decisions I have made, so I don’t know how to tell her. I don’t want to disappoint her, but I do want to do this. Simple surgery can ease pain of trigger finger Dear Doctor K: I have a painful trigger finger on my left hand.

What caused it, and what can I do about it?

Dear Reader: The term “trigger finger” may conjure up visions of sharpshooters and hunters – people who sometimes are too quick to draw their guns. To doctors, however, “trigger finger” refers to a condition that occurs when the finger briefly locks and then suddenly releases as you try to bend or straighten it. This often causes a snapping sound.

Perhaps surprisingly, our fingers contain no muscles. Rather, muscles in the hand control our fingers. Those muscles are attached to tendons, which, in turn, are attached to our finger bones.

Different muscles and tendons pull on the finger bones, causing the fingers to move.

Trigger finger affects the tendons. A tendon is like a small rope of tough fibers. In a healthy finger, tendons glide smoothly through a tunnel. Like the tendon, the tunnel is formed of tough fibers attached to a finger bone.

That tunnel keeps the tendon close against the bone.

Sometimes the tendon develops a knot (nodule). Other times

In either case, the tendon no longer glides smoothly through the tunnel. The result is pain and a catching feeling. When the tendon catches, the tunnel can become (more) swollen and irritated, creating a vicious cycle. Sometimes the tendon becomes completely stuck in the tunnel, and the finger can’t be straightened or bent. People who are older than 40 and who have rheumatoid arthritis, gout or diabetes seem to be more prone to the problem.

There are several things you can try to break the cycle of inflammation and pain. These include wearing a splint or taking anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or naproxen. Your doctor can inject a steroid in the area around the tendon, reducing the inflammation and swelling of

the tunnel.

If your symptoms don’t improve, surgery is an option.

A quick and simple procedure allows the tendon to glide through more easily. Usually, this restores finger movement right away. You may feel tenderness, swelling and discomfort for one month or longer. Full recovery can take several months to a year.

A patient of mine, a man in his 60s, developed a trigger finger.

Since he was a writer and spent a lot of time at a keyboard, he had a problem. He joked: “I don’t get an idea that often. When I get one, I need to type it quickly, before I lose it.” Simple measures didn’t solve the problem, but simple surgery did.

A few months later he came to the office for a follow-up visit.

When I asked him how his typing was, he said: “I’ve got a terrible problem. Now I have no trouble typing. That means that on a day I don’t write much, I’ve got no excuse.”

Dear Lynn: The healthiest and best approach is to safely lose about one pound of excess weight a week through a combination of a varied, well-balanced diet and moderate exercise. It took 3,500 extra calories to gain one pound of body weight. Do a little research to find out your ideal weight and number of calories needed daily to maintain that weight, and then consume 500 less calories per day.

It took time to add your extra weight, and it should take time to get rid of it. Start your day with a nutrition-filled breakfast. Not only will it get you going in the morning but breakfast also should supply you with onefourth to one-third of your daily nutritional needs.

When you bid to a grand slam, there is normally not much point in counting losers, because you cannot afford any.

You might as well only try to find 13 winners.

In this deal, which 13 tricks should South hope to take in seven hearts after West leads the diamond three?

The bidding had a modern tinge. South’s four-club rebid was a splinter, showing at least game-forcing values with a singleton or void in clubs. North then control-bid (cue-bid) his diamond ace, which East doubled to ask for a diamond lead. And South optimistically took a shot at all of the marbles.

Outside hearts, South has six winners: four spades, one diamond and one club. He could rely on the diamond finesse and try to take six trump tricks. But East’s double strongly suggests that that finesse will fail.

Instead, declarer should play for seven trump tricks. But which seven?

South should use dummy’s winners to remove East’s trumps and take three ruffs in his hand.

However, he has to be careful with his communications.

Declarer wins with dummy’s diamond ace, ruffs a club with a high trump (queen, king or ace), returns to dummy with a heart, ruffs another club high, leads a heart to dummy, and ruffs the last low club. Then, after a spade to dummy’s queen, declarer draws trumps and claims. It is a classic dummy reversal.
