LOCAL BRIEFS Mill Creek prairie walk planned for next Sunday

CAMPTON HILLS – Garfield Farm Museum is offering a two-hour-plus prairie walk at 9 a.m. July 5. The tour will be led by Jerome Johnson, the museum’s biologist. The museum is on Garfield Road off Route 38 in Campton Hills.

With the start of summer, the look of the Mill Creek prairie is beginning to change

with all the new growth that has emerged in the wake of March and April’s prairie burns and June’s rains. A look at the installation of a new bridge over Mill Creek after one year will be made.

Fourth of July events at Pottawatomie Park

WHAT: The St. Charles Park District celebration features a free fireworks show. Refreshments, from hot dogs and bratwurst to popcorn and ice cream, will be available at the River View Miniature Golf concession stand.

Car causes chaos overnight in Batavia

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – At 2 a.m. Friday, Sharon Witkowski was awakened by a loud noise outside her house at 241 Trudy Court.

“It woke us up. The screeching sound was so loud,” she said. “It sounded like bumper cars.”

As she investigated what happened, Witkowski found that a car had run over her lawn, destroying her mailbox and taking down a tree.

Police were called, and officers later found the car abandoned nearby on Walnut Street, Witkowski said. Police could not be reached for comment about the investigation.

Witkowski said she is thankful that the car didn’t do any more damage.

“The car was headed toward taking the whole front porch off,” she said.

The damage wasn’t contained to those two houses.

Following the damage at Witkowski’s house, the car continued driving down Whipple Avenue and hit another tree, she said.

Witkowski said she filed a report with Batavia police, who are investing the incident. The city gave the couple a temporary mailbox to use, she said. She hopes police will be able to find the driver.

“I just want him caught,” Witkowski said.

‘Just that sense of community’ Annual Swedish Days festival continues today, Sunday in Geneva

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Even with overcast skies and a threat of rain Friday, Geneva’s downtown was mobbed for the continuing Swedish Days Festival.

Emily Varsho of La Fox, with daughters Mackenzie, 5 and Samantha, 2, had just finished a game at the Geneva Public Library before heading inside for the used book sale.

“I love all the activities for the kids,” Varsho said.

“This is our third day being here for the fest, and we love the library booth. We love the family tent. We petted musical instruments. ...

It was a musical instrument petting zoo. And so they got to test out all these different instruments, and they loved it. Mackenzie has found that she absolutely loves the flute, and Samantha’s really good at the drums.”

The Friends of the Geneva Public Library used book sale was so busy Thursday that five minutes before closing at 9 p.m., people still were lined up outside, friends group President Ellen Bassett said.

“Our book sale has been busy, busy, busy,” Bassett said. “It’s constant. Almost always somebody checking out, and we still have a lot of books.”

The sale continues from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today with a fillthe-bag sale, she said.

“We provide the bag, you fill it up and it’s $8,” Bassett said.

Catherine Santiago of El Paso, Texas, was visiting her aunt and godmother, Diana Velarde of Aurora, when they came to Swedish Days. It was their first time, and they both said they loved it.

“The fact that there is a variety of things I don’t normally see in El Paso,” Santiago said. “Just that sense of community. That togetherness ... people being extremely friendly and talking to you like you’re an old friend. That is something I have not seen before.”

“The book sale was fantastic,” Velarde said.

John and Heather Wonderly of DeKalb and their son, Liam, 6, were just finishing lunch after a busy afternoon of going on all the carnival rides and participating in most of the games.

“The food’s pretty good,” John Wonderly said. “The turkey leg was really awesome, and we had a couple slices of pizza from Morano’s.”

Though Heather Wonderly has owned Wild Berry Salon, 227 S. Third St., in the Berry House for 10 years, she always worked during Swedish Days.

ish Days Parade stepping off at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The Swedish Days Parade marshal this year is Joe Greenberg, 90, of St. Charles.

nization and Geneva Chamber of Commerce chose him because he has been actively involved in promoting the development and growth of the business community.

Greenberg was a Dancing with Geneva Stars contestant in its inaugural year, a cast member of State Street Dance Studio’s Nutcracker and worked on chamber programs such as 60 Men Who Cook and the Swedish Days Grand Parade.

He works as operations manager for The Little Traveler, 404 S. Third St. Greenberg said he is known around Geneva for dressing up in costumes and passing out gold coins, Hershey kisses, Easter eggs and hugs.

“They said that is why you got nominated,” Greenberg said. “I just feel like I have not done anything that important. ... I won’t say I understand it, but I appreciate it.”

Details coming on electric aggregation KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com Residents and small businesses in unincorporated Kane County, excluding Aurora and Dundee townships, should expect to receive detailed information about the county’s new electric aggregation program in their mailboxes this week, according to a news release from the Kane County Division of Environmental & Water Resources.

Letters will be sent by Dynegy Energy Services LLC and will include the Kane County seal on the envelope, the release stated. Kane County entered an agreement with Dynegy Energy Services on June 3 to secure lower electric rates for qualifying residents and small businesses in unincorporated Kane County.

The program will go into effect in August. Residents and small businesses will not need to do anything to be automatically enrolled in the program. There is no enrollment fee, no switching fee and no early termination fee, according to the release.

Participants will continue to receive their electric bills from ComEd over the course of the two-year contract, but will notice that rates are lower. Residents can choose to opt out of the program, but they need to do so by July 10, by returning the opt-out card

they receive in the mail or calling Dynegy at 844-351-7691, the release stated.

Those already receiving electricity from an alternative supplier will receive a different letter in the mail in June that will inform them of how to opt in to Kane County’s program. Residents should also be aware that it is not uncommon for solicitors to visit areas newly enrolled in an electric aggregation program.

Residents are advised to not give out their ComEd account number to any caller or door-to-door solicitor unless they have carefully reviewed the contract terms and have made a decision to switch from ComEd to that supplier, the release stated.

If a solicitor does claim to be representing Kane County and requests a ComEd account number, residents are encouraged to file a complaint with the Illinois Commerce Commission Consumer Services Division by calling 800524-0795 or visiting www.icc. illinois.gov/consumer/complaint, the release stated.

Retiring in 2001, Shirley set to providing loving patience and support to her husband and her gardens - though not always in that order - and a welcoming home to her children and friends. The Fox River served as a backdrop to much of her adult life and it’s not likely that anyone spent more time on its waters and shores, or appreciated them more, than did she.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Denz; her father, Joseph Tyler; mother, Rosella Tyler (nee Petersen); brothers, Howard and Jim Tyler; and her beloved oldest son, Daniel.

She is survived by her four children and their spouses, David and Christine Denz, Donna and Lon Fanning, Dawn and Joseph Shad

and Douglas and Cheryl Denz; thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren all of whom she loved dearly.

The family thanks the wonderful people who provided invaluable care and truly befriended Shirley in her later years. Parkinson’s and spinal issues stole her mobility but not her gracious spirit. Calm in the midst of chaos, a Mom to every child she met and a woman of incredible strength, her absence will be felt each day she is gone.

A commemoration of Shirley’s life will be hosted by her children from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday July 12, 2015 at the Baker Hotel Rainbow Room, 100 W. Main St., St. Charles IL, 60174, 630-584-2100.

BATAVIA – Fourth Ward Alderman Susan Stark said she believes the Batavia City Council is operating in a dysfunctional manner.

“It’s very splintered and fractured right now,” Stark said during Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

“We are like a dysfunctional family right now.”

Stark suggested aldermen go on a retreat to resolve their differences.

“I’m not a big fan of retreats, but we definitely need something to be functional,” she said.

Third Ward Alderman Dan Chanzit agreed with Stark’s assessment of the situation.

He first called for a retreat

two years ago.

“It has become more and more obvious over time that there is a disconnect,” Chanzit said. “Too many people joined the council at once two years ago, and the learning curve has been very steep, which has made it difficult to get things done.”

A record six new aldermen were sworn into office in May 2013. Since then, the City Council has seen additional new faces because of vacancies.

The city currently is accepting applications to fill an empty 4th Ward seat after Jamie Saam accepted the position of Batavia MainStreet executive director.

Local programs, organizations help unemployed find jobs

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com It was hard for Jayne Holley to hear the same four words over and over in her networking groups – “Are you still looking?”

Yes, she still was looking.

It was fall 2014 and Holley, a Campton Hills resident, had lost her job in September as a patient care coordinator at a physical therapy office in Geneva.

Holley, 60, was getting calls back for interviews, but they wouldn’t result in job offers. That changed after she joined AARP Foundation’s Back to Work 50+ initiative at Elgin Community College.

“It was priceless,” Holley said. “It changed my whole perception of what I needed to do and how I needed to be doing it.”

The AARP initiative is one of several programs available to residents looking for work in Kane County, said Anne Hauca, senior director of the Workforce Transitions Department at the college.

The college’s Workforce Transitions unemployment services sees on average 60 to 80 people a month who are unemployed. Residents of any age who live in the college’s district can meet with an unemployment services coordinator if they have lost their jobs, Hauca said.

“Our job is to help those who are interested and excited for opportunities [to] move forward as quick as they can, and those who are depressed and angry to move as quickly through that stage as possible,” Hauca said.

About 80 percent of residents served in the department are older than age 50, Hauca said. One program for

The program also is offered at Waubonsee Community College, whose main campus is located in Sugar Grove.

The AARP initiative offers coaching and tuition-free classes to adults 50 and older who qualify, Hauca said.

Holley said the program allowed her to interview at a higher level and to be better prepared for what to expect in

the job market.

She also felt support from her classmates, some of whom also had lost jobs and others who had been out of the workforce for several years to raise children.

“I think it built up camaraderie … to be around other people who are going through the same thing; it’s just helpful,” Holley said.

Holley was looking for fulltime work in higher education, but thought she was well suited for the 25-hour-a-week position. Another plus was that she liked the college’s work environment.

The college responded in kind, and Holley’s first day was June 1 as a specialist in the college’s Community and Legislative Affairs Department.

The do-over

Do-over.me is a nonprofit organization that helps people with any transition in their life, including a job loss. The organization provided services to more than 100 adults since it was founded in March 2014, said Cynthia Wade, its founder, board president and managing director.

The organization, located at 1141 Commerce Drive in Geneva, offers consultations, classes and workshops either on a sliding scale or free to those who qualify for scholarships, Wade said.

One of its offerings unique to the area is a nonperformance improv class.

The class is not about entertaining, and no experience is required, Wade said.

Improvisation helps people gain confidence in different situations and can improve communication in teams, Wade said.

One class consists of a series of improv practice games that involve staying in the moment and thinking of re-

“People in this area no longer have to leave the county to go to the Community Career Center in Naperville or CareerPlace in Barrington,” Wade said during a June 1 presentation to the St. Charles City Council. “We have something right here that’s going to be able to serve their needs.”

Snack time for a spider If you’ve ever traveled with teens or tweens (or me, for that matter) you know that food for the trip is a primary concern. Meals and snacks are planned just as carefully as the route and the restroom stops.

So it should come as no surprise to learn that last week, when I hit the road with the sixth- through ninth-graders enrolled in Go 4 It (an awesome week-long program that includes four great outdoor activities, hiking, biking, canoeing and camping), we had enough food to last an entire weekend – even though our trip was roughly 28 hours start to finish.

Hershey bars, marshmallows and graham crackers – that’s right, for s’mores. Bagels and cream cheese. Peanut butter.

Oh, and for one individual, a heaping helping of Calopteryx maculata.

Now’s probably as good of a time as any to mention that that particular individual came somewhat late to the party. We ran into her after we arrived at the state park. She was down by Clear Creek, a wonderful tributary of the Apple River, where throngs of C. maculata, or ebony jewelwing damselflies, were fluttering about.

She was quiet. And quite hungry. And her name is Dolomedes – the fishing spider.

Fishing spiders use hairs to breathe under water • GOOD NATURED

Continued from page 15 such, can give you pause. The body length of females (the larger of the two genders) can reach 26 millimeters, which is more than 1 inch.

Add on legs that are over 40 millimeters, or 1½ inches, and you have a spider whose visual presence approaches 3 inches – a lot of spider for any region, but particularly for us here in northern Illinois, where most arachnids are but a fraction of that size.

I’ve run into fishing spiders on and off over the years, most frequently when I worked at Red Oak Nature Center in North Aurora.

Down by Devil’s Cave, the little geologic curiosity along the Fox River, south of the nature center, I’d often come across fishing spiders basking on the rocks in the afternoon sun.

Only once during that time did I see a fishing spider actually appear to be fishing.

She was at the edge of the river, back legs on land and front legs extending out onto the water, waiting to sense the vibrations of approaching prey – animals that range from insects to small fish.

Bedecked with short, velvety hairs that repel water, fishing spiders are able to move about on the surface of a pond or stream, or submerse themselves and breathe the air trapped between the hairs in a sort of all-encompassing scuba suit.

Our Ms. Dolomedes from last week may or may not have taken advantage of these special features to help catch her damselfly snack.

What I do know is that she was intent on consuming it, and neither the commotion of a dozen nature campers splashing through the creek, nor the intrusion of a camera – with a flash, even – would deter her from finishing her meal.

Like the camp kids, this spider was a teen, too. A sub-adult, that is, maybe three-quarters of her adult size. Another molt or two, and she would be fully

mature and ready to take on her next mission – courtship aimed at finding a mate.

(If I had more time, or space, I would love to share some of the human courtship strategies I overheard being discussed by our own subadult campers: Choices in body wash fragrances. Hair styles. Cheesy pickup lines.

My favorite? “If you were a booger, I’d pick you first.”

Ah, middle school …)

As the teens and tweens made their way farther upstream, under the watchful eyes of their instructors Miss Kate and Miss Jenna, I stayed behind to watch the fishing spider finish her meal.

She deftly manipulated the damselfly – which she’d captured by ambush and stunned with venom – using her pedipalps, the sensory appendages sometimes mistaken for legs at the front of every spider’s body.

Munch, turn. Munch, turn. The spider was meticulous and almost dainty in the way she maneuvered her meal.

I watched her for a good 20 minutes before hearing the sounds of the Go 4 It kids heading back downstream.

When we met up again, I made sure they kept quiet, so as to not to disturb Dolomedes during her last few bites.

We tiptoed our way past the spider, down the creek and then up the bluff to our campsite.

The campers had lots to share about their adventures.

They had seen fish and crayfish, found deer and raccoon tracks, fell down, splashed and in general had a rollicking great time. I told them about the spider and what I’d observed.

Before we knew it, we were back at camp – with just enough time to grab a snack before dinner.

Pawns in a giant chess game The mighty struggle underway over the Illinois state budget is eerily similar to the game of chess. The comparison is both apt and sad.

The opponents are the entrenched Democrats, led

by House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton, versus first-year Gov. Bruce Rauner and the minority Republicans.

They represent the kings, queens, knights, bishops and rooks on the chessboard.

And the 12.8 million other Illinoisans? Well, if you’ve ever felt like a pawn in the great budgetary battle, join the club.

In chess, pawns are manipulated to advance the interests of the major pieces. Pawns don’t matter much in the grand scheme of things. They are routinely imperiled and sacrificed to benefit the more powerful chess pieces.

Likewise, in the budget battle, average citizens are manipulated to advance the interests of the politicians. If the public is imperiled by budgetary proposals and brinksmanship, it’s no real concern to the leadership class.

The object of chess is to use one’s intelligence and experience to defeat the opponent.

The same goes for politics, which unfortunately carries over into governance, and which is the crux of the budget battle: Will the state continue to live beyond its means, or not?

The budget approved by the Democrats would spend $3 billion to $4 billion more than it takes in. Democratic leaders did that on purpose to pressure Rauner to approve tax increases to cover the

difference.

For his part, Rauner doesn’t like the chronic overspending, vetoed most of the budget Thursday, and awaits the arrival of Democrats at the bargaining table to negotiate for what he wants: some “pro-business” legislation and structural reforms to government that would weaken Democrats’ stranglehold on power.

He previously announced more than $800 million in temporary cuts that are set to kick in with the new fiscal year that starts Wednesday.

What are the pawns’ roles in all of this? Average Illinoisans have spoken up about how proposed budget cuts would negatively affect them. Some have done so on their own; others have been trotted out by politicians. Either way, their stories are compelling.

Senior citizens, the poor, those with physical and mental disabilities, and others who rely on state funding are imperiled. The uncertainty is difficult to bear.

In chess, pawns do have one golden opportunity to triumph. If a pawn can advance to the end of the board, it wins a powerful promotion and gains great influence. The opposing player tries to stop that from happening at all costs.

In Illinois’ budgetary endgame, Illinoisans must put politicians in check and exert their combined influence to demand that fiscal prudence and the best interests of the people be part of the new budget.

For politicians who just don’t get it, the public can deal with them at next election.

Checkmate.

A drug to combat overdoses In the June 22 issue of Sports Illustrated – 38 pages after coverage of the Blackhawks’ recent Stanley Cup Final triumph – a story examining the ongoing epidemic of heroin use in youth sports appears.

The magazine terms its analysis a “special report.”

To us, that goes without saying. Anything highlighting the grim reality that heroin no longer is a drug of the proverbial kids in the back of the bus warrants mention.

The Kane County Coroner’s Office is in unison, too, but also possesses something more influential than heightened public awareness. It’s called Narcan, the

brand name for an anti-opiod containing naloxone, a drug known to counter the effects of heroin overdoses.

The office recently reported five Kane County residents have died of opiate overdoses in 2015, but naloxone saved the lives of six others.

Pooling studies from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Survey on Drug Use and Health and other affiliated entities, the Huffington Post in October 2014 published several maps exploring drug use tendencies in the United States.

One map in particular illustrates why Narcan and a related drug, Evzio, which

delivers naloxone through clothing and without an external needle, should be on demand in Illinois. It’s the one showing our state as the only one outside of the northeast in which heroin is the most commonly cited substance in drug treatment admissions. Marijuana is documented for border states Indiana, Iowa, Missouri and Wisconsin.

The coroner’s office offers free doses of Narcan, but those won’t last forever, officials say, before the cost may go up.

We applaud efforts to bring this product to Kane County. It’s a vital addition in the fight against heroin.

The decision comes at a time of record support among Americans for same-sex weddings. A Gallup poll conducted in May showed 60 percent favoring legalized same-sex marriage and 37 percent opposed.

“This ruling will strengthen all of our communities by offering to all loving same-sex couples the dignity of marriage across this great land,” President Barack Obama said in a statement at the White House.

Immediately after the ruling, Obama placed a call to Jim Obergefell, the Ohio man whose name will forever be attached to the ruling. Obergefell became the lead plaintiff after seeking to have his name

on the death certificate of his partner of two decades, John Arthur. Obergefell and Arthur married on an airport tarmac in Maryland in 2013 just months before Arthur’s death.

“Your leadership on this issue, you know, has changed the country,” Obama told Obergefell, who was in the courtroom for Friday’s announcement.

A party-like atmosphere developed outside the court in the hours after the ruling.

Gay-marriage supporters cheered, sang songs and took pictures of themselves at the site of history.

“This means finally equality for not only the entire gay community but for myself as well,” said Dan Fitzgerald,

a 19-year-old gay man from Washington and student at American University.

Hundreds of companies – including Amazon.com, Google and Walt Disney – pressed the court to legalize gay marriage nationwide. They said it would help them attract able workers and simplify their employee-benefit packages throughout the nation.

The ruling “will help families across the country, make it easier for businesses to hire and keep talented people, and promote both economic growth and individual freedom,” Goldman Sachs said in a statement on its website.

The Supreme Court case involved 31 people from Ohio, Michigan, Tennessee and Kentucky. A federal appeals court had ruled against gay weddings, saying changes to marriage laws should come through the political process, not the courtroom.

Kennedy rejected that reasoning, saying the democratic process must give way to the Constitution.

“The dynamic of our constitutional system is that individuals need not await legislative action before asserting a fundamental right,” he wrote.

“The nation’s courts are open to injured individuals who come to them to vindicate their own direct, personal stake in our basic charter.”

I’m calling about the “Parking lot anger in Elburn” regarding the Hawks fans that went down for the celebration and were ticketed for parking illegally.

Everyone in the area knew that there was a celebration planned in the city. Metra added extra train service for that celebration.

If Metra can recognize the need for additional service, it would make sense that the Elburn Police Department anticipate the additional need for parking.

If that had been anticipated, they could have been present to direct parkers on how to park legally, rather than wait for them to park illegally and give them an automatic ticket. I feel the

WASHINGTON – Same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry nationwide, the U.S. Supreme Court said in a historic ruling that caps the biggest civil rights transformation in a half-century.

Voting 5-4, the justices said states lack any legitimate reason to deprive gay couples of the freedom to marry. Justice Anthony Kennedy joined the court’s four Democratic appointees in the majority, bringing gay weddings to the last 14 states where they were still banned.

“The right to marry is a fundamental right inherent in the liberty of the person,” Kennedy wrote. “Couples of the same sex may not be deprived of that right and that liberty.”

The ruling is a legal landmark, on par with the 1967 Supreme Court decision that guaranteed interracial couples the freedom to wed. It punctuates a period of sweeping change in the rights of gays, coming 11 years after Massachusetts became the first state to allow same-sex marriages.

The decision is likely to meet resistance in parts of the country and spark new legal fights. North Carolina has a new law that lets court officials refuse to officiate at same-sex marriage ceremonies. Pike

County, Alabama, currently isn’t issuing marriage licenses to anyone.

In other parts of the country, same-sex marriage started almost immediately after the high court ruled. Travis County, Texas, began issuing marriage licenses to gay couples at 10:30 a.m. local time.

County judges in Ohio, North Dakota, Nebraska, Michigan, Tennessee, Arkansas and Kentucky had either begun issuing licenses or stood ready to do so Friday morning, according to local news reports.

Same-sex couples in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama were told they will have to wait.

Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented, with each writing a separate opinion.

Roberts read a summary of his dissent from the bench for the first time in his 10 years on the court.

Roberts wrote that the gay couples “make strong arguments rooted in social policy and consideration of fairness.”

But, he said, “under the Constitution, judges have power to say what the law is, not what it should be.”

‘A RARE PRIVILEGE’

Lauzen, a Marmion grad, representing U.S., this time in World Championships

Without hesitation, Ted Lauzen responded to a question about his decision to enter the United States Marine Corps after graduating magna cum laude from Duke University in 2007.

After serving eight years as a member of the Marines, including an 18-month mission in Afghanistan, U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Lauzen, now two years removed from serving overseas, will now represent his country once again, but in a much different, yet equally gratifying way.

Lauzen, a Marmion graduate, will compete in the Modern Pentathlon on Sunday as part of the 2015 World Championships in Berlin.

The Modern Pentathlon, an Olympic sport, consists of five sports – fencing, swimming, horseback riding, shooting and running – which are all completed in one day. Lauzen, an Aurora native and the son of Kane County Board chairman Chris Lauzen, will represent Team USA, as well as the United States and the Marine Corps.

“It has been a privilege to represent the Marine Corps and the United States in combat as a light attack helicopter pilot and, now, in competition as an elite athlete,” Lauzen said. “Both have been wonderful opportunities to serve my country, improve unique skills and perform them under high levels of pressure. I could not be more proud to represent both the finest fighting force and the greatest nation in the world.”

When not competing, Lauzen lives near the U.S. Olympic training center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, with his wife, Sarah, and 8-month-old daughter, Caroline.

Ted Lauzen was no stranger to pentathlons before this opportunity, however, competing in several at the junior level during his time at Marmion, as well as at Duke.

He admitted he thought his days of competitive athletics were over upon commission into the Marines, but never lost sight of his training regimen, as well as contact with both friends and coaches on Team USA. “One of the coaches mentioned there was an opportunity to earn a spot on the U.S. National Team,” Ted Lauzen said. “My wife and my commanding officer were supportive and excited about the opportunity to chase the Olympic dream.”

After submitting the necessary paperwork and waiting for word, Ted Lauzen received final approval as a member of Team USA. If that news was not enough, Ted and Sarah also found out that Sarah was expecting their first child on the same day.

Ted Lauzen is currently living in Drzonkow, Poland, while training. With an extremely heavy training schedule, Ted Lauzen speaks briefly with his wife, and says deployments and month-long training detachments have taught him a very valuable life lesson.

Another doozy is “Not yours,” or “Not you.” I’ll hear this one for a variety of reasons. For example, on a fastball right down the middle that the batter takes for a strike, the third base coach will yell, “Not you.” I’m left to wonder, why not? It was a perfect pitch to hit. Swing the bat. I’ll also hear this on borderline pitches or when a hitter swings at a bad pitch.

Of course, it’s “not yours” when you don’t hit the ball.

But is it “yours” if you rip a high pitch out of the zone for a go-ahead home run. Bobby Thorson did that for Kaneland in an unforgettable sectional semifinal game in 2011 when the Knights were down to their last two outs of the season and trailing, 3-1.

Of course, I don’t advise anyone to direct any of them at an umpire, or you’re likely to miss the rest of the game.

Before I go, while so many sayings really do irritate me, occasionally I’ll hear something new that at least gets me to smirk. I had a pitcher who was struggling with his control and leaving everything up and someone yelled, “Get a bucket. He’s throwing up.”

That’s clever, but I wonder how many more times I’ll hear it before it makes me want to puke. I’d bet sooner than later.

Ted went onto explain how each event worked, what points were awarded and deducted for, and how the events worked.

The sports are completed in this order: fencing, swimming, horseback riding, shooting and running. The day begins with a round-robin fencing competition, followed by a 200-meter, long-course freestyle swim. Individuals then draw random horses in order to complete a stadium jumping course of 12 to 15 jumps, ranging from three to four feet.

Ted Lauzen joked that it often helps to have a bit of luck

on your side when drawing horses.

After the first three events, points and times are calculated and, essentially, each competitor is seeded and starts the final stretch in order based on their point totals.

The run-shoot event includes four shooting stages and four half-mile runs. Ted said his favorite event, by far, is the running, as his four years of running the 800 meters at Marmion helped him prepare.

Needless to say, the training regimen is extensive and requires complete dedication.

Athletes train six days a week, with each day differing slightly. But Ted Lauzen said a usual day consists of three hours of fencing, a 3,000- or 4,000-meter swim, a lunch break and finishing off the day with a minimum five- or six-mile

run, with shooting practice to follow.

Training internationally, however, has allowed him to practice with athletes from six different countries preparing for the World Championships in Poland.

“We get to see a variety of style in each sport,” Ted Lauzen said. “We also work with coaches from the host country, so each brings different views and experiences that can be valuable.”

Ted Lauzen said Drzonkow was specifically built as a modern pentathlon training facility.

Sunday’s competition will not make or break his future with the modern pentathlon.

Lauzen wants to do his best and make everyone in the United States proud, but said he has every intention of competing in the future.

After Berlin’s games come the World Military Games in South Korea in October. Earlier this year, Ted Lauzen also competed on two U.S. World Cup teams in Sarasota, Florida (the site of next year’s Olympic Trials) as well as Cairo.

But as much as getting this once in a lifetime opportunity has meant to him, Ted Lauzen said he would not be where he is today without the support system he’s had to work with.

“I would like to thank everyone from my family and friends back home in the Fox Valley and Marine Corps for their continued support and encouragement,” Ted Lauzen said. “It’s because of the support I receive that I will continue to do my best and improve.”

The extended absences have grown easier on Lauzen’s loved ones. For his parents, it

is a relief to have their son and his 253-man squadron out of harm’s way and safely back after 18 months in the Marines.

“You can imagine how much more comfortable it is having your son training at the Olympic training center instead,” Ted’s mother, Sarah, said.

Chris Lauzen said he is unsure if the family will be able to watch the race, as sometimes it has been streamed online.

But whether it is representing the U.S. in the military or in an Olympic sport, everyone close to Ted Lauzen knows that he is doing something that he always has been and always will be passionate about.

All in all, Chris and Sarah Lauzen know their son is safe and at the end of the day, they can sleep at night knowing that very fact.

It’s starting to get hot and humid at the ballpark.

I now find myself sweating profusely, guzzling bottles of water and praying the players and coaches don’t utter any of the many senseless sayings that make my clammy skin crawl and blood boil.

Unfortunately, I’m already hearing them.

I swear that every time a pitched ball nearly hits a batter that I hear one of two things yelled from the dugout.

It’s either, “Wear it!” or “We got ice.”

Oh, do I loathe, “We got ice.”

For one thing, it’s not grammatically correct. It should be “We have got ice,” or simply, “We have ice.” It should never be said.

It’s meaning is simple. Go ahead and get hit by the pitch, take your base, and we’ll have ice for your boo-boo to reduce the swelling. Ugh. I need an ice pack for my head every time I hear it.

I don’t mind “Wear it,” as much, especially when a player allows the ball to hit him.

He can go ahead and get hit by the pitch, I’ll call it a ball or strike, he’ll rub his owie, his coaches will whine, and

The future – and past – play in Peoria SiriusXM satellite radio recently unveiled a seasonal “Road Trip” channel in a bid to accommodate the influx of summer travelers.

Had I known of this development sooner, I’d have petitioned for a dry run during the first days of spring.

The past three months presented three separate assignments in Peoria or East Peoria, and the soundtrack tended to grow stale. The 60s on 6 and 70s on 7, longtime preset staples of mine, only get you so far, unfortunately.

All the windshield time between covering Geneva boys basketball in the IHSA Class 4A state tournament, Kaneland softball in the 3A state tournament and the Cougars’ contingent of Midwest League All-Stars prompted plenty of pondering.

Here are some travel vignettes from those many miles spent on Interstates 55 and 74: • Each of the three hotels at which I stayed – beginning with the Red Roof Inn room I shared with previous Kane County Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab – was located off the War Memorial Drive exit on westbound I-74, about five miles from downtown Peoria.

• I’m no Mystery Diner, but Fieldhouse Bar & Grill, a few long home runs away from the Bradley campus, offers a fine selection of pub food and a laid back experience for watching sports. A few Geneva boys basketball fans stopped at the establishment for Saturday lunch before the Vikings played for third place. One playfully razzed me for wearing a St. Louis Cardinals cap.

• Only a segment of townspeople might have been compelled to do the same. I’ve been told central Illinois baseball fandom loosely breaks down to 40 percent Cubs fans, 40 percent Cardinals fans and 20 percent White Sox fans.

• Recent Geneva grad Nate Navigato was a Buffalo men’s basketball com-

mit on my first trip to Peoria. He since has joined the Toledo program after then-Buffalo coach Bobby Hurley, as seen on a Fieldhouse TV during the NCAA Tournament, left to take the same position at Arizona State.

• Before Tuesday, my most recent trip to Peoria’s Dozer Park came as a fan while working at The Courier in Lincoln. The date was Aug. 19, 2007.

The venue was named O’Brien Field then. Darwin Barney played second base and Welington Castillo was behind the plate for Peoria, then a Cubs affiliate.

The Chiefs are now aligned with the rival Cardinals. I’m 100 percent certain of that.

• Travelodge features what I’ve found to be a rare indoor hotel pool.

It’s not a rectangle and actually has a deep end, measuring about 8 feet to the bottom.

Treading water might seem as monotonous as a long drive, but it’s actually pretty invigorating after you’ve been in the car for a stretch.

PEORIA – Friday’s game between the Cougars and host Peoria Chiefs was postponed because of inclement weather. It will be made up today as part of a doubleheader of seven-inning games.

First pitch for the opener is set for 5 p.m. The Cougars lost Thursday’s series opener, 5-3, in their first action of the second half of the Midwest League season.

In your eyes, what can someone watching Kaneland basketball this year expect?

We still have some stuff to work on before the season starts, but I think you will see a really good team that plays team basketball. I think if we play with the confidence that we can beat anyone, we will be a fun team to watch this year.

Randall recently was inducted into the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference’s Hall of Fame in a ceremony at Waubonsee’s Academic and Professional Center ballroom.

Randall, a Kaneland alumnus, coached the Chiefs to 895 career victories in 37 seasons.

He ranks second on the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III all-time wins list and had the second-longest tenure among all NJCAA Division III coaches upon stepping down after the 2014 season.

Randall was named ISCC Coach of the Year six times during his tenure and finished second (1996), seventh (2010), third (2013) and fourth (2014) in the NJCAA Division III World Series. Randall has worked as Waubonsee’s athletic manager since 1984. His previous hall of fame inductions include those for the Illinois Baseball Coaches Association (2002) and NJCAA Region IV (2005).

In other ISCC honors, Waubonsee women’s volleyball coach Steve Kish was named the ISCC’s Female Sports Coach of the Year after leading the team to its first conference title, Region IV title and a berth in the NJCAA Division II nationals last fall.

The “go local” movement has taken off in the past 10 years from local farmers markets to local retailer events.

While this movement fosters a sense of community, it has a more practical purpose when talking about horticulture and gardening.

My friend, a newbie to gardening, asked me why his peach tree looked so terrible, and what he could do about it.

By “looking terrible,” what he really should have said was “dead as a post.”

In our post-mortem discussion, he was motivated to buy it because he found it at a big-box retailer and liked the idea.

One of the most common misconceptions I encounter is people not understanding our soils. Generally, the soil in our area is clay based and alkaline.

However, not knowing this, I have heard of people insistent that they need to add lime to their lawn or that they need phosphorus in their lawn fertilizer when there are ample quantities naturally available.

Most commonly, people fall in love with rhododendrons, azaleas and blueberry plants. These acid-loving plants can be grown in our climate but require an extra layer of

yearly care to keep the surrounding soil at a pH level they prefer. The best way to achieve this buffer is to grow them in a large pot sunk into the ground or in a raised bed with topsoil treated yearly with sulphur and peat moss or pine needles.

Next time you visit a local nursery, know that as part of the price you are getting the local expertise that helps to make your new transplant successful.

CHARLES – Despite a wet beginning to the season, Kane County master gardeners will soon host six open house events featuring the Idea Garden, located at the corner of Peck Road and Route 38 in St Charles.

“The 2015 Idea Garden features unique combinations of flowers, herbs and vegetables in several creative projects that are designed to replicate easily at home,” said Sarah Fellerer, program coordinator for the University of Illinois Extension.

“While we’ve experienced more precipitation than usual, and some flooding to go with it, our master gardeners have worked hard to keep the project moving forward successfully, and there will be much to see.”

This year’s gardens include a children’s space with interactive elements; a traditional Native-American “Three Sisters” bed; a Thomas Jefferson vegetable garden; and a pollinator plot, as well as updates to the African Keyhole, vertical and rain gardens.

In addition, the gardens feature plants that can

be used for salsa, teas, herbal medicine, decoration and more.

Open houses will take place from 9 to 11 a.m.

Tuesday, July 7; from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, July 9; from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 21; from 4 to 6 p.m.

Swedish Days ride to take place on Sunday

BURLINGTON – The Fox Valley Bicycle and Ski Club expects more than 700 riders at the 46th annual Swedish Days Ride on Sunday, June 28. The

event will take place on roads west of Geneva and St. Charles, across the entire length of Kane County. The ride starts near Burlington at Central High School on Plato Road, west of Route 47. Registration opens at 6 a.m. and continues until 9:30 a.m.

Registration is $28 for a single

Peyronie’s disease now has effective treatment options Dear Doctor K: I have Peyronie’s disease. Are there any effective treatments for this condition?

Dear Reader: Peyronie’s disease is relatively uncommon. The condition affects the penis. It causes inflammation and then scar tissue to form in the area of inflammation. The scar tissue accumulates and hardens, causing the penis to bend when it becomes erect, and potentially keeping it from becoming fully erect. This can make sexual intercourse difficult and painful. Most men with a curved penis do not need any treatment.

But if Peyronie’s disease causes pain or difficulty with sex, there are treatment options.

Treatment often involves a drug called pentoxifylline. This drug acts on the immune system to quiet inflammation and formation of scar tissue. You would take this drug along with one of three other drugs: verapamil, interferon alpha-2b or collagenase. These drugs are injected directly into the scar tissue in the penis.

Other drugs or supplements, such as carnitine and vitamin E (sometimes with colchicine), may also be prescribed. They are taken by mouth. These therapies are not usually effective in men with

High-intensity ultrasound and radiation therapy have been tried, but there is no strong evidence that they are effective.

Peyronie’s sometimes improves gradually without treatment. If it doesn’t improve over the course of a year, and if it makes sexual intercourse difficult, corrective surgery is an option. In a typical procedure, the inflamed or scarred portion of tissue is removed from the penis. It is replaced with tissue taken from another part of the body.

This surgery often works well. However, the penis may remain mildly curved. In addition, sexual function or shortening of the penis does not always improve following surgery. In some cases, surgery can cause erectile dysfunction. Surgeons sometimes implant a penile prosthesis during surgery. In some men, a prosthesis alone is enough to straighten the curvature and improve sexual function.

In December 2013, the FDA approved a new drug for Peyronie’s disease, Xiaflex (CCH). This drug is also used for treating a hand abnormality called Dupuytren’s contracture. This condition is like Peyronie’s, in that it causes scar tissue to form. In the hand, the scar tissue involves tendons and can prevent the fingers from straightening.

For Peyronie’s, Xiaflex is injected directly into the scar tissue in the penis. The medicine works by breaking down the thickened tissue. After the injection, tissues in the penis are stretched in order to straighten it. This drug does not run the risk of causing erectile dysfunction.

Since Peyronie’s disease can progressively worsen, injected drug treatments should begin as soon as the condition is causing bothersome symptoms. Given how disruptive this ailment can be, it’s good that we finally have some effective medical and surgical treatments.

It’s not worth gambling that your complexion will clear up in a year.

Encourage your parents to make an appointment to visit a dermatologist for a consultation.

Medication can now dramatically improve or completely eliminate your complexion problems. The treatment, if needed, is relatively inexpensive.

Dr. Wallace: My parents are both in the hotel business and they want me to follow in their footsteps. My problem is that I don’t want to study hotel management.

I want to be a math or science teacher, but my parents refuse to hear it.

In fact, they told me if I didn’t take hotel management, they would not pay for my college tuition.

The defenders need four tricks to defeat the contract. East should hope that his partner holds either the club ace or heart ace. Here, West wins with his ace and gives East a club ruff, which is the fourth defensive trick.
