Registration will be near the main stage from 9:15 to 9:50 a.m.

Prizes will be awarded in such categories as best trick, fastest wagging tail, most spots, longest ears and most

unusual pet.

Once again, festival-goers can compete in the ice cream contest at 2 p.m. July 13, which will feature a 100-foot gutter filled with hundreds of scoops of ice cream. The contest is sponsored by Foltos Tonsorial Parlor and the Batavia Creamery.

In addition, those who come out to the festival can put their golfing skills to the test in the Tour Edge Golf Challenge. Participants take their shot at chipping a holein-one on a floating green in the Depot Pond.

The cost is $5 for five shots.

The Batavia Teen Center will hold a “Power Hour” from 5 to 6 p.m. July 12 and from 4 to 5 p.m. July 13, with all proceeds benefiting the teen center.

The Windmill Whirl 5K Run will take place at a new time – 7 p.m. July 11. Registration is $25 a runner before July 10 or $30 on race day.

BATAVIA – Windmill City Festival will offer more fun next month. An extra night of activities has been added to the festival, which will be from July 10 to 13. Activities are centered on the Batavia Riverwalk at Houston Street and Island Avenue in downtown Batavia.

The festival will open a day earlier, on a Thursday instead of a Friday.

“We just wanted to give people an extra day of fun,” said Kari Felkamp, director of marketing and public relations for the Batavia Park District. The Windmill City Festival is organized by the Batavia Park District, Batavia Chamber of Commerce and the city of Batavia.

The festival will kick off at 6 p.m. July 10 with a Batavia Chamber of Commerce networking mixer.

“Hopefully that will bring a big crowd down,” Felkamp said. The festival’s beer garden also will open at 6 p.m.

The country band Back Country Roads will play from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. that day.

Windmill City Festival will feature new activities, such as Live Band Karaoke, which will be from 3 to 5 p.m. July 12.

“People can get up and sing with a live band,” Felkamp said.

Mall reopening might change to 2016

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The grand reopening of the Charlestowne Mall as The Quad St. Charles likely will be pushed back to spring 2016, its project developer said Thursday.

There might be a six-month delay from the mall’s initial fall 2015 target opening because of the project’s complex design work and some trouble securing tenants 18 months in advance, said Chuck May, project developer of The Quad St. Charles.

May said that many companies still are focused on openings taking place this year because they are geared toward moving into readymade locations. The Quad St. Charles is not a typical project because it involves a dramatic rebuild of an existing mall.

“We’re making a lot of changes and doing a lot of things that we think will be very interesting and exciting,” May said Thursday. “It’s just taking us longer than we anticipated.”

May spoke with one of the project contractors about utility work for the project starting in mid-August. Parking lot construction also would be part of the first phase of the project.

Interior work would not begin until next year. Before that happens, May will return to the city for approval of the architectural elevations for the mall building and the latest plans for the landscaping, lighting and signage of the project.

Anthony Oliver and Kirk Albinson of Cordogan, Clark and Associates of Aurora, an architectural firm, presented ideas Thursday for how the library could use its current space at 127 James St. The company’s work was done without cost to the library, trustee Steve Anders-

N. Aurora man critical after Route 64 motorcycle crash

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com VIRGIL – A 50-year-old North Aurora man was listed in critical condition as of late Thursday afternoon at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, one day after he was injured in a two-motorcycle crash on Route 64 in Virgil.

Steven Wenger was airlifted from the scene of Wednesday’s crash on Route 64, just west of Meredith Road, according to Lt. Pat Gengler, spokesman for the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

He was involved in a crash with Timothy Corbit, 55, of Elburn, who was treated and released at the scene, Gengler said.

Corbitt was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident in the crash, which took place at 5:10 p.m.

Gengler said the motorcyclists were riding together, headed to Chuck’s Bar and Grill, 47W739 Route 64. He said they were staggered in

the lane, and the first motorcycle began to turn into the business but “was essentially T-boned by the second bike.”

Gengler said Wenger was riding in a 1992 Harley Davidson and Corbitt in a 2014 Harley Davidson.

Neither motorcyclist was wearing a helmet, Gengler said.

“I am not sure of the exact nature of the injuries, but any time you have a motorcycle crash like this, you have to think helmets would

have helped,” Gengler said.

It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. Route 64 was closed between Peplow and Meredith roads while the crash was probed.

The crash remains under investigation by sheriff’s detectives and members of the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team.

Gengler said the investigation is ongoing, and it is too soon to tell whether there will be any additional charges.

During World War II, he served in the South Pacific spending most of his time on the Russell Islands and New Caledonia. Jack regretted the fact that a reassignment near the end of the war kept him from being on an aircraft carrier that was in Tokyo Bay for the surrender.

While Jack was in New York State, he was president of Reynolds Clothing Co. for 25 years. He was very active in community affairs. He was a member of the Troy Rotary Club, D.C. of the Boy Scouts, deacon and elder of the 2nd Presbyterian Church, and president of the Chamber of Commerce. In 1963, Jack and his family moved to St. Charles where he was Mid West Sales Manager for the Marvin Neitzel Corp. until his retirement.

Jack loved to teach sports and spent countless hours coaching kids in peewee hockey, softball, bowling, golf, diving and swimming. He was often referred to in later years as the “Mayor of Bonnie Drive.”

BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – A resident next to a Blackberry Township golf course awoke Wednesday to find a golf cart on fire nearby, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

Two sheriff’s deputies responded to the 39W700 block of Benton Lane near Geneva about 4:40 a.m. to assist the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District with the fire, which was at tee No. 7 of the Tanna Farms Golf Course, police reported.

The fire was out by the time the deputies arrived.

Six Flags Great America’s newest roller coaster Goliath sets records for tallest drop, steepest drop and fastest speed for wooden roller coasters. signers used a “topper track” made out of composite metal to make the ride more graceful, Six Flags Great America President Hank Salemi said.

Traditional wooden roller coasters have steel wheels on steel tracks, Salemi said.

“This topper track allows it to be innovative, allows it to run fast enough, go upside down,” Salemi said. “It’s very smooth.”

Salemi said Goliath has features of wooden and steel coasters.

“This really combines the elements of a wood roller coaster, the feel, the sensation of riding a wood roller coaster with elements like inversions that you

don’t really find on a whole lot of wood roller coasters,” Salemi said. “It’s really kind of a hybrid. It’s a hybrid between what is a tremendous wooden ride, but also has a lot of the elements that our steel coasters have, like Batman and Superman.”

As for how long Goliath holds its records is anyone’s guess.

It has been a few years since Six Flags, which opened in 1976, last opened a new ride.

Changing the landscape offers a variety of benefits, said John Krajnak, marketing director for Six Flags, by keeping the park fresh and people engaged and encouraging season-pass sales.

“The more product we continue to add is going to enhance the season pass,” he said. “You have to come multiple times to experience everything in the park.”

Krajnak said the ride’s restraint system, which has a heavy bar over a rider’s waist, thighs and shins can be intimidating, especially when the ride goes upside down and sideways.

“It keeps the riders nice and secure in the car without having to have a shoulder harness,” Krajnak said. “It adds to the thrills of the ride.”

Goliath, which was built by Idaho-based Rocky Mountain Construction, is a smooth ride compared to its fellow wooden roller coasters in the park. De-

Keith Steinke of Gurnee said when people hear wooden roller coasters, a lot of them think of rambling and vibration, which also can be fun.

However, with Goliath’s topper track system, steep drop, over-bank turns, zero-g elements and inversions, Steinke said the ride is incredible.

“I thought it was one of the most intense, yet smooth, wooden roller coaster I’ve ever been on,” Steinke said.

Paul Polelle of Lake Villa said the ride is intense from start to finish.

“It’s absolutely incredible. You get tons of air time,” Polelle said. “You have a world-record breaking drop, two inversions that aren’t on any other wooden roller coaster in the world. That in itself is pretty awesome.”

When the Gurnee theme park opens a new ride, it can mean a financial windfall for the village, which doesn’t levy a property tax, Village President Kristina Kovarik said.

Kovarik said the village sees an increase in its amusement tax revenue of 5 to 10 percent any summer there is a new ride.

“We’ve been expecting an increase in visitors to this area, which is always a boon for us,” Kovarik said. “We rely on an amusement tax, sales tax, food and beverage tax, and Six Flags is really the main generator of the amusement tax and food and beverage tax. It also fills up our hotels ... and brings people to Gurnee, and they shop and they dine. It has a trickle effect all through the community that really benefits us.”

Millennials are an influential force in the housing sector

By DINA ELBOGHDADY and EMILY BADGER The Washington Post While the recession pushed young adults to move in with their parents, a study released Thursday suggests that the millennial generation is poised to move out in droves, lift the number of new households formed and maybe even transform the housing market.

Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies projects that the millennials – the largest and most diverse generation in history – will make up 24 million new households between 2015 and 2025, substantially boosting demand for rentals and starter homes.

closely watched generation will soon reach their 30s, the age range in which household formation ramps up, said Chris Herbert, the center’s research director. As a result, the number of households in that age group will rise by 2.7 million in the next decade, according to the study, which defines millennials as those born 1985 to 2004.

The sheer number of young adults in this generation (nearly 86 million) is what makes them an especially influential force in the housing sector.

The decisions they make about their living arrangements will, by extension, affect the economy, which has traditionally relied on the housing market to create construction jobs and

generate consumer spending for everything from dishes to furniture to pricey appliances.

The housing bust and the ensuing recession disrupted household formation, reducing it to about half of the normal level in large part because many young adults struggling to find jobs decided to live in their parents’ homes instead of striking out on their own. This retrenchment has contributed to the housing market’s sluggish recovery and the dearth of first-time home buyers, who traditionally make up about 35 percent of the market.

Many new households that would have been created during more robust economic times never materialized. Even as the economy improved, the

impact of the millennials has been muted. But that’s likely to change in the next decade, the Harvard study concluded.

And there are a few signs that the number of new households has begun to recover.

In an analysis of recent Census Bureau data, Barclays found that the share of 18- to 24-year-olds living with parents or in multi-generational homes fell last year for the first time since 2005. It dropped one percentage point from 2012 to 2013, which translates to 300,000 young adults looking for alternative living arrangements, the Barclays analysis said.

An improving job market has helped lift household growth. But it will take time to

get back to normal, considering that household growth has been in the 600,000 to 800,000 range in the past few years, according to the Harvard study.

Whether they choose to buy or rent, the millennials face constraints that their parents most likely did not, such as massive student loan debts.

Between 2001 and 2010, the share of households age 25 to 34 with such debt shot up from 26 percent to 39 percent.

Even if this debt – and the tighter credit standards that lenders are imposing on all potential borrowers – does not prevent millennials from becoming homeowners, it may change the scale and type of housing they buy. If they even want to buy.

‘Just enjoy what’s happening’ Season ticket holder Yahr absorbs all things Cougars

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Bob Yahr marked 6:31 p.m. on his scorecard Tuesday, documenting the exact time Cougars right-hander Paul Blackburn threw his first pitch against Wisconsin.

The flavor of Yahr’s favorite concession delicacies still delighted his taste buds as relaxation and Timber Rattlers center fielder Johnny Davis dug in.

While Yahr remains partial to ordering a pork chop sandwich with a Domaine DuPage, a recent omission from his Fifth Third Bank Ballpark routine seems to have heightened the longtime season ticket holder’s experience.

“For a couple years, I kept track of pitches,” Yahr said.

“But then I realized I was so focused on the game, I couldn’t talk to anyone.”

Not a chance. Don’t visit Section 106, Row D, Seat 12 unless you plan on hearing Yahr yak.

“Right now, he dabbles in useless information,” winked Jody Lay, the woman one row ahead of Yahr, seated behind the Cougars’ dugout on the first base side.

“That’s why we never got too friendly with Bob,” Warren Drewes said with a grin from a few spots to Lay’s left.

It’s all good-natured ribbing, the kind Yahr returns when he senses an opening or the opportunity for a pun.

He isn’t making up for lost time, although Yahr has sprouted his share of zingers while commuting from his Elmhurst home to Milwaukee three times a week for 20 years. The Marquette accounting professor is simply at ease, “getting his kicks in Section 106,” as he puts it, in a breeding ground for innocent fun.

Asked whether it’s natural a groomer of accountants would become friends with someone like him, recently retired West Aurora math teacher Bob James offered this quip from Row D, Seat 13: “Well, we have a number of things in common,” James said.

••• Yahr bought season tickets beginning in the 2002 season and has been situated around the Cougars’ dugout since.

He and James both attest that water balloons usually are greater potential threats than foul balls.

Yahr traditionally misses a few games in April and early May – Yahr, 66, teaches on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays – but settles into

his routine once he grades the last of his students’ final exams.

Doctors diagnosed Yahr with prostate cancer in April, but gave him a 97 percent chance of recovery. He has traveled to Glenview for daily chemotherapy treatments since May 12 and has just a couple weeks’ worth left.

“I’m treating it more as an inconvenience than anything else,” Yahr said.

He means the chemotherapy, of course, not baseball.

Yahr attended his first Cubs game with his father in 1955 and learned to keep score a few years later.

His scorebook accommodates well more than the 70 home games the Cougars play each season. This summer, thumbing through the pages provides an extra jolt of nos-

talgia.

“Vacations are nice, but unfortunately, some summers aren’t what you want them to be, and that’s what I’ve got,” Yahr said. “So thank God I’ve got these games to go out to and listen to them on the radio and just enjoy what’s happening.”

••• Naturally, Yahr greeted this reporter with a quip shortly after I settled into a nearby seat to join him for a few innings Tuesday and Wednesday.

Actually, Lay delivered the joke that started the double play, if you’re scoring at home.

“Bob, did you hire somebody to write your memoirs?” she said.

“I think he’s tired of looking from the press box and wants to suffer the danger of the foul ball and things like that,” Yahr replied.

Consider it neither a risk nor a worry.

My pen and notebook made me more conspicuous than the average fan, but gabbing with Yahr never felt like an assignment, what with our easy give-and-take.

After he told me about Richard, I told Yahr about my older brother, Dave, who enlisted in the Navy for four years after high school and was sent off to basic training from a Cardinals game in our native St.

Louis.

Mark McGwire homered against the Mets in the iconic summer of 1998, giving enlistees a last taste of the magic they would try to track from boot camp in north suburban Great Lakes, near Sammy Sosa’s then- home base of Wrigley Field.

Dave, too, had deployments in the Middle East, traveling there shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

“Although the Navy was probably the safest place to be,” Yahr said.

••• James and Drewes also routinely keep score with Yahr.

While they maintain their own books, it’s definitely a collaborative effort.

“All the time,” James said.

“All the time we’re, ‘Hey, was that a 9-6-3?,’ you know. I mean, there’s a lot of complicated things going on. We ask each other all the time.”

The 106 crew also offers to fetch any concessions if one of them is leaving their post.

Yahr usually finds a way to weave a one-liner into those instances, too, and is also friends with several ushers and other staff.

“He’s wonderful. Very talkative,” said Drewes, a St. Charles resident and longtime season ticket holder and host family parent with his wife, Sam. “Been a great addition.”

The Cougars clinched the first half Western Division title earlier this month on a rainy night, and fans stuck around to shower their appreciation. The club will host at least one postseason game, Game 2 of a best-of-three division semifinal series. First pitch is set for at 6 p.m. Sept. 4, a Thursday.

Yahr figures to be driving north to Milwaukee for classes the following morning, armed with new memories to channel the next time he takes his seat about a half-hour before first pitch.

“Just comfortably sit down, make sure I have enough napkins for that sandwich,” Yahr said, “and use that to sort of get ready for the game.”

coached the Marquette men’s basketball team to an NCAA title.

Yahr and his wife, Elizabeth, raised four children – three sons and a daughter – in Waukesha, Wisconsin, before splitting in 1994. Yahr relocated to his boyhood home in Elmhurst as he took a sabbatical the same year, feeling it was the right thing to do after his parents died.

Richard Yahr, the couple’s oldest child, was born in 1979 and is serving in Afghanistan in his final weeks as a first lieutenant in the United States Army. His daughter recently turned three months old, and Richard Yahr only has been able to see her via Skype thus far.

“Yeah, technology’s great,” Bob Yahr said. “Used to be, World War II, you’d write letters, they were censored and you’d just hope they got through. And now they can actually see the people.”

Another son, Greg, a former goalkeeper for George Washington men’s soccer, is set to visit soon as he takes a break from law school classes and studying.

Yahr’s son, Christopher, who has Down Syndrome, lives in Wisconsin. His daughter, Laura, is a pharmacist on the West Coast.

Yahr jumps at any opportunity to talk baseball with his children, which must be a treat considering his comfort level even with strangers.

Through the years, Yahr recalls many instances where he heard fans seated nearby wondering what level of affiliated ball they were watching.

He politely turns around and goes to bat for Class-A each time.

“Some people just go out two, three times a year; they seem to forget whatever responses were prior years,” Yahr said. “I give them some background information, tell them players that they should watch in the lineup. You don’t guarantee everything’s going to happen. …”

Wetsch’s laid-back style pays off FROM THE TEE Kevin Druley Jordan Wetsch recently learned the value of slowing himself down on the golf course.

Nothing like having family on hand to help drive a concept home.

With his younger brother, Jake, caddying in his usual leisurely style, Wetsch scored an even par 68 over 17 holes at a June 16 Illinois Open qualifier at Inverness. The former St. Charles East standout tied for fourth with just one practice round under his belt, moving on to the July 21 to 23 Open at The Glen Club in Glenview.

“It was kind of clicking that day,” Wetsch said. “Nothing really much to it.”

Wetsch hopes to cling to that laid-back style as he prepares for the latest turn in his college career. He figures it’s in his best interests.

After transferring from Wisconsin to Colorado State after one semester with the Badgers, Wetsch now enters his first season at Northern Illinois as a redshirt junior.

Moving to a third school cost him a year of eligibility, but Wetsch views the opportunity to compete under Huskies coach Tim Porten, an acquaintance during his junior days, as a clean slate.

“Looking forward to giving some help not only on the course there but also just kind of using some of the knowledge I’ve already gained through a few years of college and helping out these youngsters here,” Wetsch said. “Looking forward to it.”

Yup, Wetsch called his peers “youngsters” even though he only turned 21 two months ago. He’s just three years removed from East and 3½ removed from his final shots as a prep golfer, when he finished three strokes from making a playoff for the Class AA state title.

Five of the Huskies’ eight golfers were freshmen last season, a prospect that invigorates Wetsch along with his new home course, Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove.

One message to the Huskies figures to sound like something they probably already heard at orientation: Diversify yourself.

As Wetsch transitioned from high school to Wisconsin to Colorado State, he found himself to be too one-dimensional, pursuing only golf and few other outside interests. He left Wisconsin after one semester, discovering it wasn’t for him, but didn’t completely accomplish his

Wetsch called his experience with the Rams enjoyable but did not compete last season, transferring again as scholarship funds and out-of-state tuition tightened.

“I kind of looked back and I was

kind of really getting too consumed by golf. So I had to kind of step back and kind of work on balancing not just golf but everything from social life to education to everything, you know,” Wetsch said. “For the first couple years, it kind of took me a little while, maybe longer than others, but I’ve finally figured it out.

I feel comfortable with where I’m at. Pretty confident about going out strong here.”

Embracing a chance to practice what he preaches, Wetsch is juggling his summer tournament slate with a community college business course before the fall semester.

It has helped him reach relaxation even when his brother’s gait isn’t contributing toward that end, too.

“I’ve been really working on the attitude,” Wetsch said. “I figure if the attitude’s in check, then you can’t go wrong from there.”

This year’s Sugar Grove Corn Boil coincides with the inaugural LPGA International Crown, giving staff at Rich Harvest Farms a natural opportunity to offer fans a taste of what’s coming their way.

While Caves Valley in Owings Mills, Maryland, will host the inaugural Crown from July 21 to 27, Rich Harvest Farms will have the event – composed of 32 players from eight countries – in 2016.

“Our guys know that it’s competitive. You’ve got to

compete to play,” Pomazak said. “That’s the kind of atmosphere that we set for them.

That’s nothing negative, that’s just the way we have it.

We want them at their very best.”

Batavia building: Life without Micah Coffey under center began Thursday for the Batavia football team.

The reigning Kane County Chronicle Male Micah Coffey Athlete of the Year graduated in May, leaving a void at the quarterback position for the

The Bulldogs were 1-4 in Red Grange pool play at Naperville North, although the Bulldogs were more competitive than their record indicated.

Batavia lost by just two points to undefeated Lincoln-Way East.

Batavia surrendered 19 points to Naperville North in a 19-5 loss, which was almost half of Huskies’ 46 total points on the day.

Its 1-4 record puts Batavia near the bottom of the seeding going into today’s double-elimination tournament.

WHEATON – St. Charles North football coach Rob Pomazak was able to take solace in his team’s competitiveness, although the team’s execution lacked at times, during Thursday’s pool play of the Red Grange 7-on-7 at Wheaton Warrenville South.

The North Stars were 2-3 on the day, with each contest’s margin of victory being eight points or less. With the scoring of the 7-on-7, teams get the traditional six points for a touchdown and can elect to go for one or two on the ensuing conversion. Defenses are awarded two points for a turnover on downs and three

for interceptions.

“We wanted to come in and run our scheme well and I’m extremely proud of what our kids did today,” Pomazak said. “We’re better today than we were before.”

Although North competed to stay in games, the team wasn’t able to make the clinching plays to earn victories. The North offense turned the ball over on downs when trailing by six late in the game to Maine South, leading to a 13-5 loss.

In the final scrimmage of the day, it was North’s defense that broke down, leading to another loss. On the final play of the game against Oswego East, with North trailing by two points, the Wolves com-

In the eyes of Ringside Masters boxing, she’s a national champion.

In March, Matejko and three other members of TriCity Boxing & Muay Thai represented their gym at 1856 Dean St. in St. Charles at the Ringside Masters nationals in Kansas City, Missouri. Three of the over-40 athletes earned titles, while all were bound by a confidence their training so often instills.

“Honestly, when I started boxing three years ago, every day, every week, every month I fell more in love with it,” Matejko said. “I figured, ‘Well, I’ve got all this training, let’s see what I’ve got.’ Kind of that,

‘Let’s see how much I’ve been paying attention in class,’ put it that way.”

Tri-City owner Pat White doesn’t guarantee homemaker-to-powerhouse transformations, largely because the majority of the gym’s 90 members don’t aspire to fight.

Of course, that was Matejko’s refrain as she gradually upped her involvement with what was once a boxing club within Tri-City Fitness, which closed its location in the Valley Shopping Center in late February.

Adding Gregory expanded the program’s reach as White sought to implement Muay Thai, the national sport of Thailand considered “the art of eight limbs.” That’s both hands, feet, knees and elbows.

Gregory, the first American to win at Bangkok’s famed Lumpinee Stadium, credits a “kinetically charged” ap-

proach as he nears his 25th year as a fighting coach and trainer and a 35th as a training participant.

“My tenure in your city won’t last forever. … It is in my nature to keep moving,” Gregory wrote in an email.

“That said, before I leave … I will leave you with individuals that are more than qualified to take my place. I will leave your city a better place!”

White said two new members signed up off the street at 7 a.m. Tuesday. He wasn’t immediately sure of their intentions, professions or backgrounds, but he was certain that didn’t matter in his or any gym.

St. Charles student among Metra contest winners KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com St. Charles resident Evan Boyle, a student at Lincoln Elementary School, won first place for his poster in the 2014 edition of Metra’s Safety Poster and Essay Contest, in the kindergarten age bracket.

The contest is designed to promote and reinforce railroad safety messages and keep the region’s children safe around trains. Thousands of students from across the region participated in this year’s contest, creating artwork or writing essays around the theme “Get Smart, Look Listen Live,” states a news release.

“This was the perfect contest for Evan to enter because he loves trains and draws them nonstop,” wrote Evan’s mother, Jessica Boyle, who commented on the Metra contest’s Facebook page.

“Such a little artist and proud of him.”

Each year, Metra’s safety contest invites students in kindergarten through 12th grade throughout its six-county service area to submit poster designs and essays highlighting the importance of railroad safety.

First-, second- and third-place winners were chosen from each grade level for the Metra safety poster contest. One winner from each grade group – elementary school, middle school and high school – was chosen for the safety essay contest. First-place poster and essay contest winners receive an iPad, while second- and third-place poster contest winners receive $250 and $100 gift cards, respectively.

Tony Corscadden has been promoted to executive vice president of operations of Radco Industries, a manufacturer of specialty fluids and lubricants for the military, industrial/energy and solar sectors. During his time at Radco Industries, Corscadden has helped in managing multiple plants and helping to open the company’s new Batavia headquarters and manufacturing facility. Corscadden will assume responsibility for all of Radco Industries’ day-to-day business operations, states a news release.

Acura offers a TL with a 3.5-liter, 280-horsepower V6 engine mated to a six-speed shiftable automatic transmission. When the TL adds Special Edition to its name, the model has turned into an all-wheel-drive, instead of a front-wheel-drive, sedan.

Engineering moxie turns Acura TL into great ride With the TL sedan, an Acura owner need not sacrifice fuel economy for luxury comforts and power.

Recently, a 2014 TL was tested and it averaged 25.6 miles per gallon on the highway. The tested TL was an allwheel-drive Special Edition model with a 3.5-liter, 280-horsepower V6 engine mated to six-speed shiftable automatic transmission.

Prices start at $36,030 for a frontwheel-drive TL, which has sport seats with leather trim interior, dual zone and adaptive climate control (with humidity control and air filration), a sound system with eight speakers, including an 8-inch subwoofer, USB port, interface with iPod, satellite radio and Bluetooth hands-free telephone hookup.

The 3.5- and 3.7-liter engines have been TL workhorses in recent years and their economy is due to Honda engineering (Acura is Honda’s luxury division) expertise, such as ion-plated piston rings, piston skirts with molybdenum buttons and specially-honed cylinder liners. This implies six pistons moving effortlessly through the motions. Handling is light and tight. On the highway, this sedan moved easily in and around traffic. The engine responded quickly and quietly in the city and the highway.

the 18.5-gallon tank.

This 2014 TL, by the way, is virtually the same as the 2013 model.

The brash look introduced to the TL several years ago has been modified into a more dignified exterior with not as much garnish at the rear and a longer but less pointed hood in front. Twin alloy tailpipes adorn the rear, chrome surrounds headlight and fog lamp assemblies in front, and the 18-inch wheels are defined by molded fenders.

Inside the décor is upper class, with leather and metal trim. Sound and climate control systems are easy to see and manipulate.

Standard safety fare includes traction and stability controls, antilock braking system, airbags in front and on the sides in front and overhead for the two rows.

There is a pass-through from the rear seating area to the 13.1-cubic-foot trunk, which is flat, lighted, carpeted and relatively square.

The ride is superb as one can hear rumbles while the car is passing over

railroad tracks, but cannot feel any on the rough contact. Coil springs over shocks, front and rear, with multilinks in the rear and double wishbones in front, form the nucleus of the suspension system. Stabilizer bars also give aid to ride comfort.

Seats are large and comfortable and legroom is not only good in front but also adequate in the rear. In front, the legroom, if the seats are powered back, should provide a comfortable ride for riders or drivers up to 6-feet, 3-inches in height. Besides a pulldown armrest revealing the pass-through, the rear seat has a cupholder, separate climate controls and reading lights.

As far as the reliability of the powerplant is concerned, according to Acura engineers, no regular tune-ups are required until the 100,000-mile mark is reached.

Besides the four-year, 50,000-mile limited warranty, the powertrain is covered for six years or 70,000 miles.

Acura provides roadside assistance for four years or 50,000 miles.

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now As I sit down to write this, minutes after arriving home from a preview of “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” I already have four Advils and a Valium in my system, hoping for relief from my pounding headache and jangled nerves. The fourth film in the series of box office hits and critical failures should continue on the same merry path it’s followed since the 2007 original.

The formula includes A) cars, trucks, giant robots (that can “transform” into fancy sport cars and beatup old trucks), and people flying through the air ... no, falling through the air; B) the foibles of mankind’s attempt to exist with those giant robots – the good ones are Autobots, the bad ones are Decepticons – who are visiting from the planet Cybertron and wreaking havoc upon us and each other; and C) we poor little human folk working with them and/or going up against them.

These are big, loud, flashy movies that feature an almost equal amount of slam-bang action, confusing plot points, and propulsive drums on the soundtrack (ahh, so THAT’S the source of the headache and nerve problem).

As mindless and over-acted as this one gets, it also offers up a bit of scientific theory: The dinosaurs didn’t vanish all those millennia ago because of a meteorite; they went extinct when the Creators from Cybertron first came here and unleashed some “seeds” or, in plain English, some big bombs that wiped out everything that was breathing.

Well, that’s the lesson that opens this film. But we’re not allowed to think about it because before you can say “check out the Bud Light product placement” we’re introduced to sin-

“Transformers: Age Of Extinction” is written by Ehren Kruger and directed by Michael Bay. gle dad and almost broke inventor Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg) who ekes out a living and dodges rent and utility bills on a farm with his hot teen daughter Tessa (Nicola Peltz). One of about 10 dozen side stories involves his initially comical over-protectiveness of Tessa, but it’s a gag that loses steam quickly then just keeps going.

Cade buys a beat-up old truck, pulls a “bullet” out of it, watches it come alive and transform into Autobot leader Optimus Prime (voice of Peter Cullen), makes sure Tessa isn’t dating anyone – Oops! She’s secretly dating Irish race car driver Shane Dyson (Jack Reynor), who is (gasp!) three years older than her – then finds out the hard way that government officials are hunting down

Optimus Prime and are eager to kill anyone who gets in their way.

Seems a CIA guy (Kelsey Grammer) and a hot-tempered industrialist (Stanley Tucci) are in cahoots on a plan to build their own Transformers – since the discovery of the new element Transformium.

Oh, please, they don’t really care about any army.

They just want all the money they can get for making an army happen. At its root, this is a film about capitalism gone way out of control.

Or maybe it’s about keeping order in the universe.

Yes, that must be it because bad guy Decepticon Lockdown (voice of Mark Ryan) is also after good guy Autobot Optimus Prime because he and his band of Autobots have been helping

the dastardly humans when they should have been killing them and taking over the planet, because there are some people who consider all Transformers, good and bad, to be “alien killing machines” ... or something like that.

Here, this line of dialogue, spoken by the villainous CIA man to our inventor hero, after our hero has been taken captive, might sort things out: “You have no idea what you’re involved with here.” Yeah, he’s got that right, but I felt the line was spoken directly to me, not to Mark Wahlberg.

I’m going to give the film some props, in that it’s a visual effects extravaganza in which both Chicago and Hong Kong take absolute shellackings due to massive amounts of gunfire and explosions and big robots beating the tar out of each other as they crash into buildings.

And that all happens before the Decepticons unleash some big, red-eyed robot wolves, and the Autobots get back-up help from some big, snarling “Legendary Warriors.”

You want just over two and a half hours of rampant devastation? This movie’s for you. You want a story that makes sense? This movie’s not for you.

This movie was not for me, but one specific part of it did earn my fascination.

After being captured by robots, thrown from moving vehicles, attacked by those wolves and generally tossed around like a rag doll, the teen daughter’s blue nail polish didn’t even have a chip.

Laparoscopy involves smaller incision, faster recovery Dear Doctor K: I need to have surgery in my abdominal area.

My surgeon said he can do it “laparoscopically.” What does that mean?

Dear Reader: It is good news.

It means that the surgery you’ll have will involve cutting through less tissue, and it will be easier to recover.

Forty years ago, abdominal surgery would have required a relatively large incision. The surgeon had no way of looking at your insides and seeing what needed to be fixed or cut out. He or she had to open you up wide to get a good look, and to get his or her surgical instruments inside your body.

Laparoscopic surgery is done through much smaller incisions.

It’s sometimes called “keyhole” surgery, or “minimally invasive” surgery. Because the incision is smaller, laparoscopic surgery tends to be less painful and leave smaller scars. Recovery is faster, and there is a reduced risk of serious bleeding.

Today’s laparoscopes are remarkable feats of mechanical engineering; they have revolutionized the diagnosis and treatment of many diseases. Laparoscopes are flexible tubes. At the tip of the tube are a light and a camera

Also at the tip of the tube are the tiny surgical instruments that perform the surgery – for example, graspers to hold tissue firmly and scissors to cut the tissue.

Laparoscopic abdominal surgery is done in an operating room under general anesthesia. The surgeon inserts the laparoscope through a very small incision, less than an inch long – like a keyhole.

The incision is usually made in or just below the navel. A gas such as carbon dioxide or nitrous oxide is pumped into the abdomen. This helps lift your abdominal wall off of your pelvic and abdominal organs, and allows the camera to view the organs clearly.

At this point, the surgeon makes additional small incisions through which he or she can insert surgical instruments. The placement of these incisions depends on the procedure.

Your surgeon can use a wide variety of surgical instruments.

These include instruments to cut

or clip internal structures or burn away scar tissue. Other instruments may be used to remove small biopsy samples or even entire internal organs. (Organs are often removed in smaller pieces so that larger incisions are not needed.)

At the end of the surgery, the surgeon withdraws the instruments, removes the gas and stitches the incisions closed.

Patients recover much more easily from laparoscopic surgery than regular (open) abdominal surgery because the incisions are smaller. The risk of complications from anesthesia is smaller as well.

That is because most laparoscopic surgeries are fairly simple and don’t require extended anesthesia.

For many laparoscopic procedures, you can go home on the day of your surgery.

Doctors and biological scientists, not surprisingly, have made most of the great advances in medicine over the past century. But don’t forget the engineers. They gave us the CT and MRI scans, for example. And the laparoscope.

Teen proud to be a virgin Dr. Wallace: After reading the letter from the girl whose boyfriend is pressuring her into having sex, I decided to speak my mind. I am 19 and proud to say that I’m a virgin. In this day and age of abortion and rampant sexually transmitted diseases, a girl must think with her brain rather than allow her hormones to make critical decisions. How should declarer continue after taking East’s queen with his ace?

North, despite having a balanced hand, raises to two spades with three good trumps because he is very weak in an unbid suit. If his side belongs in three no-trump, probably South should be the declarer. And here, when South jumps to four spades, he ought to have at least a five-card suit so that he can guarantee an eight-card fit.

South has nine top tricks: five spades, one heart and three diamonds. He needs to establish a fourth diamond trick. This will be easy if diamonds are breaking 3-3, but if they are 4-2, declarer will have to ruff a diamond in his hand, draw trumps and be in the dummy to cash the last two diamonds.

The key question is: How are the trumps dividing?

South cashes his spade queen, then plays a spade to dummy’s king. If they split 4-1, declarer will have to draw trumps and hope that the diamonds divide 3-3. Here, though, he next plays a diamond to his ace, returns a diamond to dummy’s queen, ruffs a diamond high in his hand, leads a spade to dummy’s ace (drawing West’s last trump), and cashes the diamond king and six for his contract.
