Rocket Fizz Soda Pop & Candy Shop opens

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Heather Rooney on Thursday looked at the hundreds of soda bottles in front of her and smiled.

“I’m obsessed with this place – I could be here all day,” said Rooney, a St. Charles resident.

Rooney and her two daughters, Lily, 13, and Norah, 9, were three of the many shoppers who visited Rocket Fizz Soda Pop & Candy Shop, at 301 W. Main St., St. Charles, on its first day open to the public.

People gazed in awe at the 4,000 different types of candy from different decades in the colorful store. There are 97 flavors of salt water taffy and more than 500 different types of bottled soda, said Robert Brescia, franchisee of the St Charles and Glenview locations of Rocket Fizz.

Brescia opened the Glenview Rocket Fizz in 2014 and decided to expand to St. Charles.

“I love the festivals they do here, [and] I love the downtown area,” Brescia, an Elgin resident, said of St. Charles. “We just feel very at home here. St. Charles is an amazing place.”

Brescia settled on the 301 W. Main St. property because it had the old-time feel he needed from the store.

Candy brings back memories for people, Brescia said.

“It does take you back to your childhood,” said Ryan Welch, a Polk, Ohio, resident at the store Thursday.

Welch was in St. Charles for the 2015 National Holstein Convention, which concludes today at Pheasant Run Resort.

He and fellow Polk resident Jeneva Auble saw the storefront and remembered another Rocket Fizz location once was featured on the CBS TV show “Undercover Boss.”

Rocket Fizz Soda Pop & Candy Shop opened Thursday at 301 W. Main St., St. Charles. The store offers 4,000 varieties of candy and 500 kinds of sodas.

One of Welch’s purchases included cookie dough soda, one of the many unique flavors the store offers. Concert posters, gag gifts and masks also adorn the shop’s walls.

Brescia said he already has received plenty of enthusiastic feedback about the St. Charles location. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

One of Brescia’s daughters, Deana, will manage the St. Charles location, while another daughter, Amber, manages the Glenview location. He and his wife, Tonya, travel between the stores as needed.

“This is one of our dreams come true,” Brescia said of the store.

School board members OK agreement with Elburn

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Kaneland’s school board Monday unanimously approved an intergovernmental agreement with the village of Elburn regarding a project that will establish a fiber optic connec-

tion between Kaneland High School and Blackberry Creek Elementary School.

The agreement previously had support from Elburn officials. Kaneland School District 302 needed permission from the village to place the fiber optics on village property, according to a district memo.

Associate Superintendent Julie-Ann Fuchs recommended the board approve the agreement “providing for license for fiber optic cable in the village of Elburn.”

According to www.techterms.com, fiber optic cable “contains tiny glass or plastic filaments that carry light

beams. Digital data is transmitted through the cable via rapid pulses of light.” The site added “fiber optic cables provide the fastest data transfer rates of any data transmission medium,” since information can be transferred at the speed of light.

Board members supported the move, although board member Ryan Kerry noted the district’s attorney, Bob

Britz, also is the attorney for Elburn. Fuchs said if an issue would come up, the district could turn to a different attorney to find a solution.

Board member Pedro Rivas asked about a time frame. Tim Wolf, the district’s director of technology, said it would be done during July.

Fuchs praised Elburn officials for their cooperation through the process.

She was once the secretary to the assistant superintendent of finance in Glenbard School District 87. Above all, she was a devoted wife and a loving mother.

She was an avid traveler and went to such places as Poland, Russia, the Arctic, China, and the Galapagos Islands. She loved to read and frequently completed two books in one week. She was a power shopper extraordinaire.

She is survived by her daughter, Laurie Skutecki (Stanley); son, Robert (Tina Wheeler) DeFranco; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ozzie DeFranco; her parents; and siblings, Alex, Mary, Stella, and Bill.

Lady of Victory grade school. A 1949 graduate of Alvernia High School she and her Alvernia sisters remained close friends for over 66 years. Married October 23, 1952, Shirley joined her new husband Leo at the army’s Ft. Campbell in Kentucky where, as a civilian, she claimed the base skeet shooting crown. Upon discharge, the couple moved back to the Chicago area where she raised her family and helped Leo start and successfully run LD&A Advertising, for 35 years.

Retiring in 2001, Shirley set to providing loving patience and support to her husband and her gardens - though not always in that order - and a welcoming home to her children and friends. The Fox River served as a backdrop to much of her adult life and it’s not likely that anyone spent more time on its waters and shores, or appre-

ciated them more, than did she.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Denz; her father, Joseph Tyler; mother, Rosella Tyler (nee Petersen); brothers, Howard and Jim Tyler; and her beloved oldest son, Daniel.

She is survived by her four children and their spouses, David and Christine Denz, Donna and Lon Fanning, Dawn and Joseph Shad and Douglas and Cheryl Denz; thirteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren all of whom she loved dearly.

The family thanks the wonderful people who provided invaluable care and truly befriended Shirley in her later years. Parkinson’s and spinal issues stole her mobility but not her gracious spirit. Calm in the midst of chaos, a Mom to every child she met and a woman of incredible strength, her absence will be felt each day she is gone.

Has the economy recovered since the Great Recession?

The answer will differ depending on who answers the question.

Although officials cite a number of indicators pointing to an economic recovery in Kane County, they say some aspects of the recession will have a lasting impact.

“The economy’s not perfect, but we’re certainly better off than we were in [2008, 2009] and through 2012,” said Don Cummings, founder of Geneva-based investment management firm Blue Haven Capital LLC and a Geneva alderman.

Cummings was part of a panel at the Economic Forecast 2015 event in January in St. Charles and hosted by the Kane County Chronicle.

Cummings said many signs point to an economic recovery, including a gradual increase in interest rates, a decrease in the unemployment rate, an increase in the number of houses sold and an increase in the average selling price.

The suburban Chicago housing market posted a 12.8 percent increase in the number of homes sold in the region in April compared to the same time in 2014, according to the MainStreet Organization of Realtors.

The median price of single-family detached homes was up 9.6 percent compared to the same period last year, according to the organization.

Kane County in April had an unemployment rate slightly lower than state and national rates, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The county posted a nonseasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 4.8 percent in May, while the

The property was desirable because it was in great condition, had a 95 percent occupancy rate when put under contract and was conservatively priced at $3.4 million, he said.

“Not everything is getting the same attention,” Johnson said. “There are office and retail properties that have been on the market for well over a year and have not sold or leased.”

Investors are particular, and they remain cautious, doing a careful review of properties they are considering before moving forward, Johnson said.

By the end of 2013, Arnold had started up Arnold Consulting Solutions and acquired two clients while searching for a full-time position.

Arnold said he received three months of severance and qualified for unemployment benefits. He used the unemployment funds to pay for COBRA continuing health coverage, but those benefits stopped on Jan. 1, 2014.

As the months turned into a year, then a year and six months, Arnold felt the pressure increase. Through networking, he heard about an opening at the Delta Mu Delta

International Honorary Business Society in Brookfield.

Arnold finally received an offer in December 2014 to become the society’s executive director. Since the position is only 32 hours a week, the society’s officials encouraged Arnold to continue developing his consulting business when he’s not in the office.

Arnold works on his consulting enterprise out of his home or in a workspace at the Batavia Public Library. He is often in Batavia for Batavia Chamber of Commerce events and also for the Talk of the Town Toastmaster’s Club, of which

he is currently president.

Even with all he has endured, Arnold said he is not bitter but appreciative to be working. He said he enjoys the flexible schedule that his new role provides.

In between his responsibilities, Arnold also is helping different people he knows across the Chicago suburbs with their job searches as a way to give back. He credits his faith, family and friends for getting him through the tough times.

“You have to adapt ... maybe you won’t be in the same position that you were previously,” Arnold said.

Unemployment rate declines; job growth lags

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Kane County’s unemployment rate in May was slightly lower than the state and national rates, according to the most recent comparable data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The county posted a nonseasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 4.8 percent in May, while the nonadjusted rates showed Illinois at 5.6 percent and the nation at 5.3 percent, according to the bureau.

Declining unemployment rates, along with increasing interest rates, are indicators the economy is heating up again, said Don Cummings,

founder of Geneva-based investment management firm Blue Haven Capital LLC and a Geneva alderman.

The Kane County unemployment rate has decreased by 1.7 percent compared to May 2014, according to the bureau. The state’s unemployment rate decreased by 1.3 percent from May 2014, and the U.S. rate dropped 0.8 percent during the same time period.

Although Illinois has gained an average of 5,300 jobs a month during its recovery from the recession, many other states have seen a quicker recovery, according to an Illinois Department of Employment Security news release.

The number of Illinois jobs will

likely not reach pre-recession levels until June 2016, according to department analyst estimates.

In May, the three industries in Illinois with the largest gains in employment were professional and business services with 6,900 jobs, leisure and hospitality at 3,300 jobs and government with 2,300 jobs, according to the department.

Industries with the largest declines in May included manufacturing with a loss of 2,500 jobs; trade, transportation and utilities losing 2,300 jobs; and financial activities with a loss of 1,200 jobs, according to the department.

“I do think we’re in a ‘new normal’ – I think some manufacturing that has gone away will never come

back,” Cummings said during a recent phone interview.

An announcement of local mass layoffs involving hundreds of manufacturing jobs at the Honeywell System Sensor facility, 3825 Ohio Ave., St. Charles, was made earlier in June.

The positions are being moved to other Honeywell manufacturing sites, according to a statement from the company.

A total of 252 workers will be affected, with the first layoff date scheduled for July 27, according to the May Illinois Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, or WARN, report.

“We need to focus on retooling for different jobs,” Cummings said.

When Susan Arnold arrived to the family’s home in Wayne one afternoon in April 2013, she was surprised to see her husband, Jeff Arnold, still wearing his suit jacket.

Arnold, 60, had been busy sending emails and reaching out to contacts. His contract wasn’t renewed that year, and he was out of a job.

“On that very first day, I wanted to get started [job searching] right away,” Arnold said. “I knew it was going to be a marathon; it wasn’t going to be a sprint.”

Arnold was the CEO and executive director of the American Society of Home Inspectors, as well as its for-profit arm AEI and the society’s foundation.

He knew he was not likely to find another similar full-time position, but he kept on searching, applying and interviewing.

One company told him he was the runner-up for a position; another said he was one of six finalists out of an applicant pool of 138 people. In both cases, the offer ended up going to someone else.

“I’m not going to lie and say you don’t get despondent … but I thought, ‘I got to keep on moving,’ ” Arnold said.

because of already-high property taxes in Kane County. Residents’ financial situations also varied – some are on a fixed income, and others are emerging from underwater mortgages, she said.

“What I did sense and what I did hear was extreme financial caution, which is still what the consumer is feeling right now,” Pierog said.

During the more recent April 7 consolidated general election, about 75 percent of voters in the St. Charles Park District rejected the district’s $28 million referendum proposal.

Jeff Greenwald, the district’s superintendent of recreation, cited the economic downturn as a reason for the referendum’s failure.

“People are still hurting with the economy recovery … it’s a strong memory,” Greenwald previously said in April after the election. “People lost home equity and retirement savings.”

Organizers at area food pantries said they have seen an ongoing need for assistance from residents.

The food pantry at The Salvation Army Tri-City Corps in St. Charles distributed 824 bags of food in May, up from 791 during the same time last year, said Belen Hood, director of the facility.

But at least one area service, the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry, has seen a decrease in families served since 2008. The total number of people served dropped 6 percent in 2014, and

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com In a 6-3 vote Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the federal government can provide nationwide tax subsidies to the poor and middle class, so they can buy health insurance.

In affirming President Barack Obama’s health care law is constitutional, the majority upheld an appellate decision that all who qualify should be able to get subsidies, not just those whose states set up their own health insurance exchanges.

“Congress passed the Affordable Care Act to improve health insurance markets, not to destroy them,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the majority. “We must interpret the act in a way that is consistent with the former, and avoids the latter.”

Justices Anthony Kennedy, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayer and

Elena Kagan joined with Roberts.

In his dissent, Justice Antonin Scalia called the majority’s ruling “interpretive jiggery-pokery.”

“The court forgets that ours is a government of laws and not of men,” Scalia wrote.

“That means we are governed by the terms of our laws, not by the un-enacted will of our lawmakers.”

Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito joined in Scalia’s dissent.

Obama hailed the decision in a speech from the Rose Garden.

“Today, after more than 50 votes in Congress to repeal or weaken this law; after a presidential election based in part on preserving or repealing this law; after multiple challenges to this law before the Supreme Court – the Affordable Care Act is here to stay,” Obama said.

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, said in a news release

that the court’s decision “does nothing to stop crippling premium increases or prevent a health insurer monopoly that is severely restricting choice for hundreds of thousands of Illinoisians.”

Hultgren criticized the Affordable Care Act as causing “health care to be grossly unaffordable to millions of Americans.”

“My constituents could face a more than 30 percent premium hike next year, and many simply can’t afford even higher health costs,” Hultgren stated in the release.

“Over and over again, this law has robbed most Americans of affordable health care coverage and restricted their choices for providers and care,” Hultgren stated in the release. “I will not stop fighting to make health insurance better and more affordable for them.”

If the court had ruled against the law, Obama said, “America would have gone

backwards” and “millions of Americans would have had thousands of dollars’ worth of tax credits taken from them.”

For many, health insurance would have become unaffordable; they would have become uninsured again, and ultimately, everyone’s premiums could have gone up, the president said.

Since the law’s approval five years ago, more than 16 million uninsured Americans have health insurance coverage and the price of health care

insurance has been slowed, Obama said.

Even those who get health insurance through their jobs have been helped by the law, the president said, because they are paying less.

“The law has helped hold the price of health care to its slowest growth in 50 years,” Obama said. “What business owners pay out in wages and salaries is now finally growing faster than what they spend on health insurance. That hasn’t happened in 17 years.”

Pandering has hurt Jindal’s presidental prospects BLOOMBERG NEWS

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is a talented executive who, in his attempt to please conservative ideologues, adopted reckless fiscal policies that have run his state into the ground. He also is the latest Republican to enter the presidential race.

Jindal began his career as a wonky wunderkind: The son of Indian immigrants, he was a Rhodes scholar who became secretary of Louisiana’s Department of Health and Hospitals at age 24, president of

Louisiana’s university system at 28, and assistant secretary at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services at 30. After a stint in Congress, he was elected governor, and whispers of the White House started swirling. But from the beginning, he seemed to want it too much.

Jindal’s two terms as governor have been a disappointment for Louisiana residents – in recent polls, he garnered a 32 percent approval rating – and for all who had hoped he would govern as a problem-solving pragmatist.

After inheriting a $1 billion budget surplus, Jindal agreed to an income tax cut the state couldn’t afford. He cut spending where he could, particularly on health care and higher education, and reduced the state workforce. But balancing the books required relying on one-shot revenue windfalls and resorting to other fiscal sleights of hand that have left the state’s cupboard bare.

To close this year’s record budget gap while honoring the pledge he made to a politically influential advocacy group not to raise taxes, Jindal engi-

neered a comically dishonest tax credit even his fellow party members referred to as “money laundering.” Washington has enough of this kind of budget gimmickry already.

Jindal was an early champion of the Common Core educational standards – until they became a tea party target. He then reversed course, putting his political ambitions ahead of the interests of Louisiana’s schoolchildren, who regularly finish at the bottom of national rankings.

Jindal joined most other Republican governors in rejecting

the expansion of Medicaid. And after Indiana found itself at the center of a national controversy over a religious freedom law that allowed discrimination against gay couples, Jindal pushed for a similar law in his state.

His persistent eagerness to please conservative activists makes his standing in the polls – hovering around 1 percent – rather pathetic.

Anything can happen. But Jindal’s candidacy may end up being useful mainly as a cautionary tale for overly ambitious politicians.

The Batavian, a graduate student in archival studies at the University of Texas, is one of 19 members of the 2015 Frank and Peggy Steele Internship program, a 10-week study that provides a playground for Nellis’ photographic memory.

Makes sense. She certainly handles her share of images each day.

Now in her fourth week in Cooperstown, Nellis’ primary responsibility involves processing photos provided from major league and minor league baseball clubs, titling and describing them and placing each in the Hall of Fame’s catalog record.

“I thought it would be perfect to learn more about baseball and also learn about another aspect of archives that I haven’t studied yet,” Nellis said.

Nellis graduated from Batavia High School in 2010, and, like her older sisters, Alaine (Class of 2006) and Leslie (Class of 2007), recalls watching White Sox games with her dad, James, growing up.

Both Nazos and Ralston got a good chance – or a small “snap shot,” as Ralston put it – of how their team is going to shape up heading toward the end of summer.

Ralston said he doesn’t like looking too far ahead, but a league like Geneva’s can provide a picture of what coaches

can expect from certain players.

“You can’t really plan too far ahead of the season because you truly don’t know what you have until you get there and start playing,” Ralston said.

“But I think it gives you a look at what tools you have to work with and what some of the teams’ strengths and weaknesses are.

“As coaches, that’s what you want because then it gives us a chance to plot out how we can put these kids in the best position to be a successful team come the start of the season.”

Nazos said as the summer winds down, he and his fellow coaches will sit down and be able to assess each individual player and what they can bring to the table for his Bulldogs this year.

“You always want to know where you’re at in that particular moment,” Nazos said.

“But every time we talk about things at the end of the sum-

mer, they usually change by November ... so it’s good to let the guys get out there and play hard, but how things are going, I like where we are at and have a good combination of leaders, youth and talent with this group.”

Injury watch: Both Kaneland and Geneva had minor injury scares when they had players leave games early.

Kaneland’s Jake Gomes was upended under the basket and landed with his head hitting the floor.

Gomes, a 6-foot-5 incoming senior for the Knights, left the game and, after going through concussion protocol, did not return to action as a precaution.

Geneva’s Bennett Fuzak, who has dealt with ankle issues for the past week, rolled his ankle once again in the Vikings’ loss to Kaneland. Fuzak also did not return to action, but said after the game that he will rest it and hopefully be ready to go for July practices.

GENEVA – As the final day and tournament of the Geneva boys basketball summer league ran its course Thursday, it was another day filled with high intensity and stiff competition.

But as many have said before, results do not matter in a summer league.

Although Kaneland might disagree with that statement as its run to the semifinals stretched beyond any of the other Kane County Chronicle-area teams, at the end of the day, each team was able to take away positives from the month-long league.

“We’re a part of this because we know we are going to play good teams here every night,” Batavia coach Jim Nazos said. “We try and get better and develop throughout the summer, and being a part of this summer league sure helps you see what you’re go-

ing to be up against in the coming season.”

“You have Upstate Eight (Conference), you have DVC (DuPage Valley Conference... teams like DeKalb, Sterling, so I mean you can look at it in a lot of different lights,” Nazos added. “But whether or not you win or lose these games, you get better because of who you play.”

Batavia’s exit in the tournament came to the hands of UEC River Division rival Geneva, as Vikings coch Phil Ralston has now had a few months to assess his new team after a March trip to the Class 4A state tournament.

Ralston joked, saying, “Every phase of the game needs improvement,” as his Vikings played their last game of the summer tournament against Kaneland. It may also be about the third time quoting him saying it, but there’s no doubt Ralston thinks Geneva’s summer league is better than any in Illinois.

BodiTrack keeps things exciting for instructors

By JAMES NOKES editorial@kcchronicle.com There was a time when Jake Thurm chased his dream of playing golf driven by fear.

Thurm quipped he went “everywhere and got nowhere” against the competition and wanted to know why. Where others succeeded as players why did he fail?

It led him on a search for answers that would lead to a career as a golf instructor.

Today, the director of golf at Fresh Meadow Golf Club in Hillside is driven by the same fear of failure, as his continued push to evolve golf instruction has reached a crescendo with BodiTrak, portable pressure mapping technology designed to provide instant feedback on the force golfers apply to the ground during a swing and the quality of motion made.

The BodiTrak technology consists of Elastic Smart Fabric sensors that provide a 3D image of the pressure points a golfer makes during their swing. It costs about $5,000 at www.boditrak.com.

are actually the pressure a golfer exerts on the ground, and the ground back on them, through the course of their swing. Finally, Thurm believes he’s found golf instruction Nirvana, technology to provide students with solid answers.

“This is an exciting time in golf instruction,” Thurm said by phone Wednesday before a golf clinic he was working with legendary instructor and mentor Jim Suttie. “Because of the information we have available, junior golfers are better than at any other time in history.

There are kids just striping the ball every time out because there is less guessing from their instructors as to what is happening. There is quantifiable data available.”

Whereas golf instruction started with advice from professionals that observed students, moved to video analysis and further evolved to Trackman, a golf radar system, Thurm said BodiTrak has further lifted the veil of what takes place during the swing. The two-plane theory evolved through video analysis. An instructor had images on a screen and could offer corrective cues based on the information.

With BodiTrak, Thurm can measure the quality of motion and piece-by-piece measure the sequence a weight shifts a golfer makes during the course of their swing. It takes the radar information and a series of numbers Trackman provided to measure impact of the golf ball and gets to movement of the player. It allows Thurm to teach based on feel rather than numbers of positions.

“My quest is to complement the great teachers who came before me that laid a teaching foundation without the benefit of the technology we have today,” said Thurm, who also teaches at Ruffled Feathers in Lemont, Athletico in Oak Brook during the winter and is looking to expand his Nike Junior Summer Golf Camp which has more than 500 students in 2016.

“I also want to clean up the general misconceptions in the public about the golf swing.”

Report: Haggerty switches to Wisconsin

Incoming St. Francis senior outside hitter Molly Haggerty, the 2014-15 Gatorade Illinois Volleyball Player of the Year, has switched her collegiate commitment from Nebraska to Wisconsin, the Wisconsin State Journal has reported.

Haggerty helped the Spartans to a 38-4 record and the program’s third consecutive IHSA Class 3A state title in November, contributing 381 kills and 152 digs.

Even though Thurm feels locked into the information BodiTrak has provided, he still wants to improve his instruction.

“This technology was out there for 10 years,” Thurm said.

“It wasn’t until recently it was used for golf. There is so much instruction based on following what others do. I want to go out and be a leader, find the best, simplest information possible.”

For Wilson, his connection with Frazier from their time together at Wisconsin, and the desire to come to the Chicago area were driving factors in his decision to bring the camp to DeKalb.

“I know NIU has a tremendous facility, first of all,” Wilson said. “Sean Frazier is an unbelievable man and has done a great job at Wisconsin and here. I have a lot of respect for this program.”

The Russell Wilson Passing Academy makes seven stops during the NFL offseason, including DeKalb. Northern Illinois associate athletic director Ryan Sedevie, who spent 18 years at Wisconsin, said bringing the camp to Huskie Stadium was a yearlong process – and included sending more than 100 youth players from the area up to the camp in Madison, Wisconsin, last summer.

“What a shot in the arm for the community and NIU,”

Carey said. “To get a two-time Super Bowl quarterback and, obviously, a great college quarterback and have him on the campus for the kids – you see the kids’ eyes, they’re all wideeyed. I’m super excited. Sean has a great relationship with him, so he got it done. I had no doubts when they started talking about it, that he was going to get it done.”

The day, which featured photos and autographs from Wilson for the young players along with plenty of football drills, left many of them with wide smiles.

“When he told us, ‘Good job,’ it’s like, ‘Yo, that’s Russell Wilson. That’s awesome,’ ” DeKalb resident Jeremiah Wright, 16, said.

Danny Russell, 15, also of DeKalb, said he was nervous about being around one of the top quarterbacks in the game but when he met him, he was amazed that Wilson seemed like “just a regular guy.”

According to Carey, the young players weren’t the only ones eager to meet Wilson.

“As wide-eyed as the kids

are, our players are, too,” Carey laughed. “This is a guy where our guys want to be.”

In Wilson’s only regular-season game at Soldier Field, he threw for 293 yards and had a game-winning touchdown pass to Sidney Rice in overtime to give the Seahawks a 23-17 win in 2013. When asked if the camp was a chance to convert some young Bears fans into being young Seahawks fans, Wilson

smiled as wide as many of the young players Thursday.

“I won’t say it out loud,” Wilson said, “but maybe that’s the case.”

However, for the 15-year-old Russell, not even being around the Super Bowl champion could sway his alliance.

“I think he’s a good player,” he said. “But I still got to stick with the Bears even though they’re not winning.”

DeKALB – Russell Wilson was much kinder to Northern Illinois this time around.

Years after torching the Huskies during his days at Wisconsin, Wilson came to DeKalb as celebrity host of the Russell Wilson Passing Academy, which featured hundreds of youth players of all ages Thursday at Huskie Stadium.

“He’s one of the best quarterbacks in the game, and he’s here right now,” said a smiling Jackson Johnson, 13, of DeKalb, during lunch break.

The Seattle Seahawks star quarterback led the camp, which lasted about five hours, with help from a group that consisted of former and current Northern Illinois football players.

“I shook his hand, and I think his hand ate mine,” Huskies linebacker Sean Folliard laughed. “He’s an impressive human being. He’s awesome to meet and seems like a really great guy [who] cares about the kids and is a genuine person.”

In 2011, his senior year at Wisconsin, Wilson threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns to lead the No. 7 Badgers over the Huskies, 49-7, at Soldier Field. Chandler Harnish, who helped with the camp Thursday, was the quarterback for the Huskies that day.

Despite being thought of as undersized at 5-foot-11, Wilson has emerged as one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL – leading the Seahawks to back-toback Super Bowl appearances, including a blowout victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII. “He’s for the little guy – literally. People talk about his height and not being an NFL quarterback,” said NIU athletic director Sean Frazier, who said there were between 450 and 500 campers present. “He wanted (the camp) to be in Chicagoland, he wanted to make sure he had a good audience, he wanted to give back to the kids. All that fit. I said, ‘Why not DeKalb? Why not NIU if you want to do that, Russell?’ It was a no-brainer.”

Defense anchors Women’s World Cup efforts

By STEVEN GOFF The Washington Post OTTAWA Through four World Cup matches over two weeks, there are few suggestions that the U.S. women’s national soccer team will wake from its Canadian slumber and begin blitzing opponents with a profusion of goals.

Scoring will have to continue coming from industry in the run of play and set pieces.

Germany, France and Japan are the entertainers here.

The Americans are the backstage laborers.

But here’s the thing about a team with a sputtering attack backed by an unyielding resistance: It only takes one goal to win. “You can call them deficiencies. We’ve gotten the result we’ve needed to get in every single game,� left back Meghan Klingenberg said of the offensively challenged squad. “And if we keep teams to zero goals and only score one per game, I wouldn’t say that’s a deficiency; I’d say that’s winning.�

While fans, analysts and former players stew about the tepid performances, the Americans have advanced to the quarterfinals with three consecutive shutouts and a 333-minute scoreless streak.

China is next, today at Lansdowne Stadium.

Anchored by goalkeeper Hope Solo, the United States has not conceded a goal since midway through the first half of the Group D opener against Australia.

Of the eight survivors, only Canada, which also labors in the attack, has allowed as few goals.

Solo was sensational against the Aussies and, thanks to Klingenberg’s late goalline clearance, she blanked the Swedes. She was largely undisturbed in victories over Nigeria and Colombia. In all, U.S. opponents have generated 11 shots on goal (five in the past three games).

While Coach Jill Ellis has tried several combinations on the frontline and swapped

outside midfielders, she has remained consistent with her other assignments: Carli Lloyd and Lauren Holiday in deep central midfield positions and Klingenberg, Ali Krieger, Becky Sauerbrunn and Julie Johnston protecting Solo.

Ellis will have to make changes today: Holiday, as well as left wing Megan Rapinoe, is out with a yellow card suspension. Ellis said Morgan Brian will probably fill in for Holiday. Christen Press is the primary candidate to replace Rapinoe, the team’s most influential attacker.

The strain of a second game on three days’ rest and a long flight from Edmonton might prompt adjustments in the back, as well.

Regardless of personnel, the Americans say, the defensive system remains intact and allows the team to position itself for taut, low-scoring victories. “We all know we’re not playing our best football and we’re still finding ways to win,� Lloyd said. “That’s the history of this team: No matter whether it’s good, bad, we still find a way to get it done.�

Entering the tournament, one of the primary questions concerning the U.S. championship capacity was backline experience; only Krieger had started regularly in the World Cup or Olympics.

While she and Klingenberg have handled the corners, mixing defensive shrewdness with overlapping attacking forays, Johnston, 23, and Sauerbrunn, 30, have forged an unassailable central partnership.

Johnston, a former attacker at Santa Clara University who plays for the NWSL’s Chicago Red Stars, did not begin gaining regular U.S. assignments until last year. Sauerbrunn, who played at the University of Virginia and is now with FC Kansas City, cracked the starting lineup for good in 2013.

Summer, the pool and the way back home The summer season was officially declared less than a week ago.

Yet the experience of summer began when the sunny and warm days appeared, just about the time that schools closed doors.

The familiar expectations of summer fun and those lazy, hazy days emerged. Like every other change of season here in the climate of our valley, most of us tended to recall and anticipate the best of times.

All of these observations set off a nostalgic trip to way back then and a look at how life seemed simpler and the weather seemed like no big thing. For me, the good old days were in the late ’40s and early ’50s range. How about you?

Any, “What can I do?” question was answered with, “Go outside and play with your friends” (roller skate, bike ride or go some place within walking distance). For me the walk-to place was Pottawatomie Park and the swimming pool.

I recall my beginner’s class and the patient and gentle teacher (to this day), Barbara Anderson. I caught on about the swimming but could never (to this day) agree to dive from the edge of the pool. So, each summer I was out back in the beginner level.

Remember the swimming experience started with a swimsuit wrapped in a towel roll, taken into that inner circle where a basket was issued for storing the street clothes, which were exchanged for the swim suit in the privacy of a dressing room. The basket was brought to the window where someone, likely Carol Swanson Glemza, issued a safety pin with a matching number.

The final stop, ignoring the showers, was the blue foot bath that could be avoided by the deft ones who stepped along the thin ledge.

Soon the challenge was to graduate from the kids pool to the big-time pool for grown-ups, featuring a high dive and a spot to place the towel on a strategic spot to sunbathe and watch people. In my world, the activities tended toward a cannonball leap into the pool, solving that getting-used-to-the-coldwater challenge, and going underwater to harvest tar balls from the floor of the pool.

Reverse the process after several hours, wrap the wet suit in the towel roll and head home through the park with a stop at the pro shop or the concession stand for a cool drink. Greet Maury Nelson, Chet Anderson or other townies, then back to Second Street along Langum Trail, past John Johnson’s boat house, back on Main Street, crossing easily with only a steady yet not heavy traffic flow, unless it was at the time the factories were changing

Associate professor of earth science/geology David Voorhees is the co-recipient of the 2015 ICCTA Outstanding FullTime Faculty Member Award. Voorhees, who has been teaching at Waubonsee since 2002, is very active at the college and in professional associations. He serves as the principal investigator for the college’s National Science Foundation STEM grant and just started a three-year term on the NSF’s Advisory Committee for Geosciences, states a news release.

Dedicated to the art of teaching at the community college level, Voorhees created the GEO2YC group within the National Association of Geoscience Teachers and served as its first president in 2011-12. Earlier this academic year, he was honored as an American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow.

Sjogren’s syndrome involves more than just dry eyes Dear Doctor K: I have Sjogren’s syndrome. People tend to dismiss it as a problem with dry eyes, but it’s so much more than that. Can you please describe this condition for your readers?

Dear Reader: Sjogren’s syndrome is a lifelong condition.

It does tend to be best known for causing dry eyes, but it can cause other problems as well. For example, Sjogren’s syndrome can produce dry mouth and affect any of the body’s glands, including those that secrete sweat, saliva and oil. About half of people with Sjogren’s syndrome also have another connective-tissue disease such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.

Named after Swedish eye doctor Dr. Henrik Sjogren, this syndrome affects people of all ages and races. However, 90 percent of all cases involve women, most commonly between the ages of 45 and 55.

Sjogren’s syndrome is an autoimmune disorder. That means the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own cells and organs. The immune system exists to attack foreign microbes or substances that invade our body. In autoimmune diseases,

In Sjogren’s syndrome, the immune system attacks the organs that normally produce lubricating fluid. These include the salivary glands in the mouth and the lacrimal glands in the eye. This eventually causes a marked reduction in tear and saliva production.

Dry mouth and dry eyes may not sound all that bad to someone who has never experienced them.

But consider the many consequences these conditions can bring about. Dry mouth can cause tooth decay, periodontal disease, salivary gland stones or infection, oral fungal infections and mouth sores. Difficulty swallowing and eating can lead to weight loss and malnutrition.

Dry eyes can produce blurred vision and the feeling that there is sand in the eye. Insufficient lubrication of the eyes can also lead to bacterial infection of the

conjunctiva, damage to the cornea and even vision loss.

Sjogren’s syndrome can impact other parts of the body. Fortunately, this is uncommon. Outside of the eyes and mouth, Sjogren’s syndrome is most likely to affect the lymph glands, which can swell and become quite large. Indeed, people with this syndrome also have a higher risk of developing cancer, particularly lymphoma (cancer of the lymph glands).

Sjogren’s syndrome also can affect the skin, muscles, joints and vagina, making them stiff, sore and dry. Worse, it can damage organs that are essential for life: the lungs, pancreas, kidneys, skin and brain.

While it often is a mildly irritating condition, it can be quite severe. Fortunately, proper treatment can help to relieve symptoms. Artificial tears keep the eyes moist. Various treatments that quiet the immune system’s attack on the glands that make tears also can be very effective.

My parents and this other lawyer and his wife do a lot of things together socially. I’m 18, but I’m not dating anyone at this time.

Now my parents want me to go out with this other lawyer’s son. I’ve seen him several times and he seems nice and is not bad looking, but I could never see him as a guy I’d like to date. Now here’s my problem. My parents think he is very handsome and highly intelligent and would be a good “catch.”

Dr. Wallace: As a parent, I’m concerned that my high school son and daughter are not getting a well-balanced lunch when they eat in the school cafeteria. I try to get them to take a lunch prepared by me, but they want to eat in the cafeteria with their friends.

When I was a student 20 years ago, school cafeterias served food high in fat, cholesterol and salt content. I can still visualize school lunches of macaroni and gobs of cheese, canned green beans and chocolate chip cookies washed down by a pint of regular milk.

When will schools come to realize that they are teaching our young people to eat the wrong kinds of food? Why are schools in the food business anyhow? – Concerned Mom, Somewhere in Texas

Dear Texas Mom: Immediately after World War II, the National School Lunch Program was started as a public health campaign to improve the nutritional state of students. It later evolved into a way to use surplus food produced by productive farmers. Most school districts would be thrilled to eliminate the headache of providing hot meals for students, but in some instances this is the only hot meal the students get during the day.

It would be safe to say that all school cafeteria managers are aware of the need to provide nutritious, delicious lunches that are low in salt and fat content. Not only are they aware that the future health of students is important, but they are also teaching students to eat properly.

Many school cafeterias now offer salad bars loaded with fresh fruits and vegetables, pizza with low-fat cheese, and substitute ground turkey for ground beef in meat dishes.

Why not ask the school principal if you can stop by the cafeteria and have lunch after the students are back in class?

Then, if you have any questions or suggestions, you can voice your concerns to the people who can do something about them.

Most all principals will honor such a request, but if for some reason your request is denied, give a call to the superintendent’s office. They will be glad to answer your questions.

I have been seeing a woman, “Melinda,” for eight years now.

She’s 51 and also has a steady job.

Our relationship has been somewhat rocky, but we have also had some really great times.

Melinda has said for years that she wants to get married. It makes me nervous. I’m in love with her, but when she brings up marriage, I run and hide.

At the bridge table, you will often be faced with finesses, but you do not have weeks to decide upon your line of play. In this deal, which finesses should South attempt? He zooms into six spades. West leads the club queen.

Declarer takes the trick and draws trumps in three rounds. What should he do next?

North’s three-heart rebid promised 5-7 points and at least a five-card suit. Over four spades, South bid what he hoped he could make.

Declarer starts with 11 top tricks: six spades, two hearts, one diamond and two clubs. If West has the heart queen, cashing declarer’s king, then taking that finesse will work; South might even collect an overtrick. But if the finesse loses, the contract has no chance. Is there something better?

Of course there is. At trick five, South should lead his low heart and finesse dummy’s jack.

If East wins the trick, declarer can claim. He has four heart tricks by overtaking his king with dummy’s ace. Or, if East does not take the trick, South can run one of dummy’s diamonds. Then, when he wins the next trick with his club king, he overtakes his heart king with dummy’s ace and tries a second diamond finesse. His odds of success are very high, but they are hard to quantify because how likely is it that East would duck his heart queen?
