Reluctant approval for Kaneland communications consultant SUGAR GROVE – Kaneland’s school board members, with some reluctance, provided a green light for a communications consultant during the summer months on an as-needed basis.

They also approved the hiring of teachers, if enrollment in half-day kindergarten classes would grow to a level that made it necessary.

The Kaneland School District 302 Board met Monday night at Kaneland Harter Middle School, the last meeting before incoming Superintendent Todd Leden’s start date of July 1. Also, there were several decisions tabled as board members preferred to wait on the results of a contract with the Kaneland Education Association, which represents the district’s teachers.

The decision to keep the communications consultant available during the summer was not unanimous. Board President Teresa Witt, Vice President Veronica Bruhl and newcomer Ryan Kerry voted against it. Cheryl Krauspe, Peter Lopatin, Gale Pavlak and Pedro Rivas voted for it.

Lopatin, noting that some board members have at times been adding commentary when casting a vote, chose that route, saying “with great reluctance, I will vote aye.”

The memo noted the board “needs to discuss how they would like to proceed for the 2015-16 school year.” It also noted Jacobs would be available for the summer on an as-needed basis and would charge the district at the 201415 rate of $35 an hour.

Witt came out strongly against the move, saying she was “completely opposed.”

“I am appalled that this position makes $35 an hour,” Witt said. “I never would have approved it from the beginning.”

However, other board members said Leden should have a say in it. In Fuchs’ memo, she pointed out a benefit would be “to provide Dr. Leden with some continuity during his first year as superintendent.” Lopatin said if Leden would want the consultant on board, “I would be supportive of that.” Krauspe said it’s on an as-needed basis, so if the consultant wouldn’t be needed, there

GENEVA – Geneva’s Got Talent’s semifinalists will compete at 6:30 p.m. today on the Central Stage, near 100 S. Third St., Geneva, during Swedish Days.

Twenty acts were selected by three judges to advance from the auditions held May 16.

Semifinalists will compete for a chance to win first place and $1,000. Individuals can vote for

their favorite act by going to the “Geneva Park District” Facebook page and liking the contestants’ pictures until 10 a.m. Friday.

These votes, combined with the judge’s votes, will advance the semifinalists with the most votes to the finals Saturday. The finals will be on the same stage and begin at 6:30 p.m. Attendees can watch the shows from the courthouse lawn.

Krauspe asked why numbers could go down before then. Sarah Mumm, the director of educational services for kindergarten through fifth grade, said some parents might opt to switch to the full-day kindergarten program offered. She said families sometimes might choose to have a student go to a private kindergarten program.

Other decisions were put on hold pending a future KEA contract, including providing stipends for coaching positions that have been approved but not funded, as well as another issue to potentially adjust stipends for positions already funded.

Tabling the latter was approved unanimously, but Krauspe voted against tabling the discussion for coaching positions.

Krauspe said she didn’t like asking people to have faith and wait while the process unfolds, adding “that’s not the way I do business.”

It was brought up that communications was identified as an area in need of improvement during a recent community survey. But some board members said that broader topic would need to be discussed at a higher level, and Leden would be part of that conversation. Lopatin called it a “much bigger issue.”

Board members unanimously voted to allow the administration to hire staff, if enrollment grows in some elementary schools’ half-day kindergarten programs.

It is possible half-day instructors could be needed at John Shields and John Stewart elementary schools, and an additional fifth-grade literacy teacher added at McDole.

A half-day kindergarten section could be reduced at Blackberry Creek. Staff asked the board to consider allowing administrators to monitor the situation, but board members provided a go-ahead to hire if necessary. The next board meeting is set for July 27, and board members said the process should get underway before then if necessary.

Chowdown at Elburn community center

Flooding occurred after last week’s heavy rains

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Public Works Director Gary Holm told aldermen and residents at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting the city is looking into flooding that occurred throughout the city after last week’s heavy rainfall.

Holm told aldermen the city received about 3 inches of rainfall between 4 and 5:45 p.m.

June 15, and about 1.5 inches of rain in the three days preceding that event.

“The 3-inch rainfall event is classified as a 25-year to 50-year event under normal conditions; however, because soils were saturated by previous rainfalls, it is reasonable to state that the three-inch event resulted in impacts closer to those caused by a traditional 75-year or even 100-year event,” Holm said. “When it rains that hard, our systems aren’t designed for 100-year storms.”

Holm said on the evening of the June 15 storm and the days after that, the city’s field crews

inspected multiple storm and sanitary sewers to make sure they were functioning properly. He also said city staff already has begun to perform field inspections of properties to determine the nature of any damage that might have occurred.

“The areas where structures were inundated or were impacted by sewer backups will be given the highest priority as the city prepares its response,” Holm told aldermen. “Ultimately, we need to prioritize. We want to identify issues.”

Batavia 7th Ward Alderman Dave Brown asked Holm if there was anything residents whose sewers are getting backed up could do. He said the area could see more heavy rain this week, according to forecasts.

Installing a standpipe is one possible solution, Holm said.

A standpipe is an open-ended pipe inserted in a floor drain.

The city previously announced residents affected by flooding would receive 10 free garbage stickers for disposing of damaged goods. However, a few of the residents at the meeting said 10 stickers weren’t sufficient for the amount of damaged goods they have to throw out.

“The kids look forward to it so much every year, so that is the funnest part of it,” said Elizabeth Gracey of Geneva, as she and her daughter, Kinsey, 9, and son, Graham, 6, walked to the carnival to go on the rides.

Gracey said the family moved to Geneva from Chicago about two and a half years ago. This is their third festival as residents, but it is the fourth time they attended.

“We came to Swedish Days before we moved here,” Gracey said. “Swedish Days was one of the reasons we moved here. This is one of the best things about Geneva, for sure.”

The festival, sponsored by the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, typically draws 200,000 people for the shopping, food, music, entertainment and activities, organizers said.

Among them was Larry Suk of Decatur, Texas, who came with his son, Nathaniel, 9, both for the festival and the 84th birthday of his mother, Eloise Suk of Naperville.

Plain White V’s to perform at Swedish Days festival Band includes former, current Geneva High School students

By KATIE KULL kkull@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Before graduating from Geneva High School, Joe Foster, Wes Ruby and David Pollina knew they could please a crowd when they donned white v-neck T-shirts and played for students and their families in the GHS talent show, Viking Revue.

Their rendition of the hit song “Thrift Shop” garnered raving support from the audience and inspired them to continue with their funky big band covers of popular music.

Since that time, the group has used its love of music and its passion for service to start a charity called the Society of Charitable Musicians. All the proceeds from the band’s concerts are used to help failing music programs in the Chicagoland area.

“It basically started out as us playing music together for fun … [but] I thought, ‘Hey, why don’t we take this a step forward and use our musical talent for a charitable cause?’ ” Foster said.

The Plain White V’s have played at nursing homes, events for The Salvation Army, and in front of the Kane County Courthouse in Geneva.

During Christmastime, they sport Christmas sweaters, bring a bucket and go Christmas caroling at homes to raise money.

Last year, the Society of Charitable Musicians hosted a campaign on GoFundMe.com. It raised more than $2,000, which was used to supplement underfunded music programs in the area, Pollina said.

Even though Foster, Ruby

and Pollina go to different colleges now, the Society of Charitable Musicians has gained support from other Geneva High School students.

“I know even when I was at college, there were still people [playing] to raise money,” Ruby said.

None of the Plain White V’s band members are studying music for their primary major, but they use other talents to help promote the Society of Charitable Musicians.

Foster, a political science major at Tulane University, uses his leadership skills to head the organization. Pollina is a double major in public relations and music at Drake University, but uses his public relations skills to help the band find opportunities to play, and Ruby uses his economics and finance training from Iowa State University to

“My dad was from Sweden,” Eloise Suk said. “It smells so good – the food. Everywhere you go, it smells so good.”

The festival recognizes the city’s Swedish heritage, something Cookie Herman, 72, of Plainfield and her daughter, Heidi Herman, 49, of Geneva, reflected by wearing Swedish-themed hats.

They wore miniature blue and yellow top hats fastened by headbands – a hand-crafted hat that Cookie Herman makes and sells at the Shoppes at 127 on Third Street.

“I dreamed my whole life about living in Geneva,” Heidi Herman said. “And now that my son is grown up, I moved here three years ago. ... I love it here. ... My mom and me come to all the festivals. We are festival people.”

win a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle and raise money for Illinois Special Olympics. Sgt. Dan Kott leads the department’s fundraising effort, and Pam Mucha works as a records specialist at the police department.

Tickets are $10 each and available at a booth on the courthouse lawn on Third Street and through the department. The drawing will be Oct. 16, Pam Mucha said.

“The motorcycle will be on display through Swedish Days, through Sunday,” Pam Mucha said.

John Cain of Geneva said he would buy a ticket.

“I’m going to probably regift it, redonate someplace else,” Cain said. “I don’t ride motorcycles.”

Cain was with his wife Becky, and their daughter, Rachel, 16, mostly to enjoy live music, but also to see his other daughter, a makeup artist at Beauté by Sylvie on James Street.

“And the ice cream-eating contest,” Cain said. “I might sign up. I’m seriously considering it.”

New board members set to take seats

mchamberlain@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Chris Higgins and Kristine Dalton are expected to fill the vacant seats on the Maple Park Village Board.

Higgins applied to fill one of the three vacant seats after no candidates were on the ballot in the April 7 election.

Valarie Massa recently became a board member, leaving two vacant seats.

Dalton also applied for a seat on the board and will be sworn in alongside Higgins at the next meeting on July 7, filling in the remaining seats.

A Committee of the Whole meeting was held in Maple Park on June 16, but Higgins was not sworn in because it did not make the agenda.

Higgins said he did not run in this year’s election because he assumed the positions would be contested.

This was not the first time Higgins has tried to get a seat on the Maple Park Village Board. Higgins said three or four years ago, he ran for election, but he did not get a seat on the board.

He did not run during the last election because his house was on the market, and he was unsure whether he would stay in the area.

“I didn’t want to run and then leave. I didn’t think that would be fair to the village,” Higgins said.

Dalton could not be reached for comment.

Old Towne Pub Wasco becoming popular music place Local restaurant installed a full stage in February

The restaurant, at 40W290 LaFox Road, Campton Hills, installed a full stage in February. Patrick Utroska, who owns Old Towne Pub Wasco with Jason Cellini, said the new stage has been getting attention.

“We’re getting good crowds,” Utroska said. “In addition, bands have said we have a nice venue here and want to know about playing here.”

Dr. Steve Holtsford, an ER physician at Delnor Hospital in Geneva, has been helping book bands to play at the restaurant. Holtsford lives in Fox Mill subdivision near Old Towne Pub Wasco.

“We took him on board as kind of our band liaison,” Utroska said.

They also worked with Dan Yotz of Sound Sculptor, a Geneva-based sound engineer company. The restaurant, which has a capacity of 220 people, has been booking local and regional bands that perform within the bluegrass/jam/roots rock genres. However, Utroska said the restaurant is happy for bands of all genres to perform on the stage.

The St. Charles Police Department will continue its support of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program with this latest round of enforcement, which began Monday and will conclude July 5, the release states.

Motorists who forget to fasten their seat belts over the holiday period run the risk of receiving a ticket, the news release said.

The objective of the enforce-

ment program is to reduce the number of car crashes and the resulting injuries and fatalities through increased, highly visible enforcement.

Police will focus on occupant restraint, impaired driving, speeding and pedestrian safety, according to the release.

Police remind motorists and passengers that it takes only a second or two to fasten a seat belt.

Seat belt use is the most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The goals of the program are to reduce the number of severe injury and fatal traffic crashes, to achieve a higher use of safe-

Holiday in the Grove includes breakfast with Santa, a craft show and other holiday activities throughout the day.

Marguerite Ledone, vice president of the event and the volunteer coordinator, said last year’s event required the help of about 100 volunteers.

“We still need more volunteers for this year,” Ledone said.

Ledone said about 15 volunteers are needed to help with breakfast with Santa.

Another 20 to 30 volunteers are needed to help with pictures with Santa and the children’s activity area. Ledone said volunteers can sign up for shifts and would not have to be there the whole time.

Five to 10 more volunteers will be needed to take down and clean up after the Santa and activity events. Another 10 to 20 volunteers will be

needed at John Shields Elementary School, where crafters, vendors and gift wrapping will be going on all day.

Children’s holiday shopping will need six to 10 volunteers dressed as elves to walk them around to buy presents for parents and grandparents, Ledone said. Five to 10 volunteers are needed in the multi-purpose room during the morning and afternoon for the holiday café, and 10 to 20 more will be needed for the kids’ craft area and cookie decorating with Mrs. Claus.

Another 10 to 20 are needed to help clean up afterward, she said. Another 10 volunteers are needed for setting up Dec. 4. Organizers need someone to donate carriage rides because the man who used to do it retired, she said.

Ledone said she also needs volunteers for fundraisers that support the Holiday in the Grove event, for the bingo tent and kids’ bingo next month during the Sugar Grove Corn Boil. More help will be needed for a September fundraiser called 5B’s Pork Chop and Chicken Dinner, Ledone said.

“Everything for Holiday in the Grove is free, except breakfast or lunch or if you buy something,” Ledone said.

SUGAR GROVE – Sugar Grove police are investigating incidents of fire-related vandalism, according to a village eblast issued Tuesday.

Sometime during Saturday or Sunday, four lawn refuse bags as well as trash cans in a park near Black Walnut Drive were set on fire, the eblast states.

“At this time there are no suspects in custody,” police wrote in the eblast.

Further details about the vandalism were not available Tuesday. Messages left with Sugar Grove police officials Tuesday afternoon were not immediately returned.

The Sugar Grove Fire Department was not called out to the incidents, said Michael

Warner, a Sugar Grove Fire Department battalion chief.

Residents should not hesitate to call 911 when anything is burning because a live fire could spread, causing further damage and harm to others, Warner said in a phone interview Tuesday.

“If residents notice anything smoking or with flames, call to have the fire department respond,” he said.

Sugar Grove police ask residents in all areas to be alert. Those who notice suspicious activity should not wait until the next day or until an officer appears – call 911 immediately, according to the eblast.

All acts of vandalism, even those that appear minor, should be reported to the Sugar Grove Police Department, the eblast states.

After the initial presentations, attendees moved to small breakout sessions to discuss the speech topics in depth and to think about how to apply them to future goals for Waubonsee College.

Liz Murphy, the CEO of CampusWorks Inc., kicked off the series of speeches.

She was optimistic about the future of Waubonsee as she referenced a 2020 College Master Plan to construct several buildings and two new campuses – one in Plano and another in Aurora.

The project finished five years ahead of time and under budget.

The new visioning process is a little more abstract.

“We want to engage the community in improving the college,” said Jim Sibley, Waubonsee’s executive director of marketing and communications. He cited the different topics of conversation and explained how he wanted the topics to “stimulate thought” in those areas to improve the learning experience.

SUGAR GROVE – The mood was optimistic Tuesday at Waubonsee Community College as members of the community gathered to discuss a vision for the future of the expanding institution.

The Waubonsee Visions Future 2050 Summit brought six speakers and hundreds of members of the surrounding area – Waubonsee staff and students, innovators in business and industry and members of the community and other organizations – together to discuss ways to make innovative improvements to the college. All residents of the surrounding area were invited to attend.

The six speakers covered a variety of topics including personal touches in a hightech environment, preparing for the 2050 workforce, measuring readiness for job candidates and preparing for sustainability. The keynote speaker, Nicholas Webb, talked about “The Future of Disruptive Innovation” – how

How rich are the rich, and how many are there?

The new “World Wealth Report” for 2015 was released last week from Cap Gemini and RBC Wealth Management.

The focus is on the population of high net worth individuals, or HNWIs, as the report calls them. The report, based on a survey of more than 5,100 wealthy people in 23 major markets, is packed with fascinating data and graphics.

You’re probably familiar with some key themes and findings: • Tremendous amounts of wealth have been accumulated during the past five years.

• Much of this wealth is concentrated in the top 1 percent; and most of that wealth

is concentrated in the top 1 percent of the 1 percent.

• The very wealthy have a disproportionate impact on policy, investing and the economy.

No big surprises, but some of the specific data points were intriguing: • The total global HNWI population is 14.65 million, with total wealth of $56.4 trillion.

• The U.S. HNWI population is 4.68 million, with total wealth of $16.23 trillion.

• The U.S. as a region is ranked first for HNWI wealth and second for HNWI population, behind the Asia-Pacific region.

Here are a few other points worth considering: • Asia rising: Asia-Pacific overtook North America to become the region with the

largest HNWI population at 4.69 million. While the two regions have swapped leadership roles before, the report notes that the growth of the Asia-Pacific region is more of a structural shift than in the past. That implies it is more likely to retain its leadership over the U.S. in terms of the number of wealthy individuals. Asia-Pacific also is likely to surpass North America in total wealth by the end of this year.

Interestingly, India was the fastest-growing market for wealthy individuals in 2014, climbing 26 percent, and jumping five places to rank 11th globally.

• Ultra-HNWIs: The 1 percent of the 1 percent now account for 35 percent of the wealth held by the richest people.

Perhaps the most significant data point regarding global wealth is the forecast: Wealth held by the richest people will rise 7.7 percent a year to $70 trillion by 2017.

• Investments: Perhaps the most significant news is that the wealthy now have more capital invested in stocks than any other asset class.

The report notes that “equity allocations moved slightly ahead of cash as the dominant asset” in the portfolios of the rich. Wealthy Japanese and Latin Americans increased their equity holdings the most. Note that this is based on surveys, not actual portfolio data.

It is intriguing to consider that despite the strong rally in equities – especially in the U.S. since 2009 and in China since 2014 – cash was still the

top holding a year earlier. It is unclear if the increase in equity holdings came about through an increased allocation to stocks or through appreciation. I suspect it may be the latter.

Finally, the disproportionate impact the 1 percent has on just about everything is something to keep in mind.

If you want to better understand much of what is going on – from policy to investing to the economy – what the wealthiest investors do tells us a lot about where the world is headed.

Troop 4843 consists of 11 Girl Scouts. They organized a book collection at John Shields Elementary School from March to May this year. Through their hard work and perseverance, they were able to collect a staggering amount

of books to give to our literacy program. We couldn’t be more proud of these young ladies.

Once again, the community has stepped up to assist the Elburn Lions with a need. Our need for books revolves around our desire to combat illiteracy in our community. Cougars All-Stars embrace road less-traveled QUICK READ Kevin Druley PEORIA – In the confluence of his returning from batting practice and my scurrying to the home dugout at Dozer Park, Cougars right-hander Markus Solbach and I greeted one another around 3 p.m. Tuesday.

An unorthodox opening line began our interview before the Midwest League All-Star game. I confessed I wasn’t as comfortable about where my car was parked as when Solbach and I converse at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Situated downtown, Dozer Park is named for a line of bulldozers manufactured

by Peoria-based Caterpillar.

Pity those wrecking machines couldn’t have paved the way for an extra lot or two.

“When my parents were here (last month), they parked, like, 20 minutes away,” Solbach said. “So I don’t know. We don’t have that problem. Just shuttled right in front of the door.”

Solbach referred to the protocol for regular-season games, because reaching the MWL’s midsummer classic isn’t as simple as applying for a credential and driving downstate or being the benefactor of a stuffed online ballot box.

The five Kane County teammates who joined him in the Western Division’s 5-0 loss to the Eastern Division undoubtedly could attest.

Of that group, only starting center fielder Colin Bray (sixth round, 2013) and righty Cody Geyer (14th round, 2011) were drafted by the parent Arizona Diamondbacks.

The rest are either nondrafted free agents or signed after their release from other organizations.

Oft-heralded Blackhawks national anthem soloist Jim Cornelison revved up the crowd while standing before the skyline of a city that long had groomed prospects of the rival St. Louis Blues.

gars righty Ethan Elias, who pitched for the independent Normal CornBelters of the Frontier League last season, reveled in being back along the Interstate 74 corridor.

“Oh, yeah,” Elias said. “I mean. I’m used to this area.

I’ve been here lots. I like it. It’s kind of like a second home.”

Elias, 22, finds himself back in Illinois after the state once loomed as his ultimate destination. The Cubs drafted him in the 22nd round in 2011, but he never climbed above Short-A and was released in 2013.

Through ties with his offseason catching partner, he earned an opportunity with the CornBelters last season and signed with the D’backs before spring training 2015.

Just a few months earlier, the Cubs and D’backs essentially swapped Class-A player-development contract partners when the Cubs left for South Bend days after the

Cougars rolled to the MWL title.

“I always knew that Kane County was with the Cubs, and it’s kind of ironic that I never made it up there with the Cubs,” Elias said. “And then as soon as I come up here, they switch it over, and then I end up getting lucky and coming up here.”

The German-born Solbach, who pitched for the Crestwood-based Windy City ThunderBolts of the Frontier League as a bridge between time with the Minnesota Twins and Diamondbacks systems, dressed for his first professional All-Star game.

In the offseason, he represented the Sydney Blue Sox in the Australian Baseball League All-Star game in Melbourne.

“Even if I don’t throw, being here, that’s enough,” Solbach said upon reassuring me about my Ford Focus.

stood at first base when Solbach entered the game with one out in the top of the sixth and the West trailing, 2-0.

Cody Regis, a UCLA product who used his collegiate ties to play for the Paris University Club of France’s Division Elite in 2014, replaced Herum defensively.

“It’s a blessing,” Regis said. “I mean, where I came from and where I played last year, and just to even have the opportunity to play with an organized team, and then to have the season that I’ve been having, it’s humbling.

It’s special.”

And it comes with a chauffered ride to the stadium. Side streets need not apply.

PEORIA – Cael Brockmeyer sported plenty of swag entering Tuesday’s Midwest League All-Star game.

Using a Jay Z song as his walk-up music merely punctuated it.

A Cubs catching prospect who helped the Cougars to the Midwest League championship in 2014, Brockmeyer started behind the plate and batted eighth for the Eastern Division in a 5-0 victory while representing the South Bend Cubs.

Capitalizing on more consistent at-bats in 2015, Brockmeyer hit .296 in 53 first-half games with five home runs and 32 RBIs. In 77 Cael games with Brockmeyer the Cougars last season, he batted .297 with eight home runs and 43 RBIs. “Like anything, you can’t let your success or anything get to you,” Brockmeyer said.

“You’ve got to get in there every day and put in the work, and I think sticking to that is one of the keys, especially when it’s a long season. Staying mentally tough helps you push through it.”

With pitching changes indigenous to the MWL’s 51st midsummer classic, Brockmeyer caught seven pitchers in his five innings, including Eastern Division starter Jeremy Null of South Bend, a 15th-round Cubs draft pick in 2014.

Null got East on track toward an eventual combined three-hitter, scattering one hit and three strikeouts in his lone inning.

“Like anybody, I think he’s hitting his spots,” Brockmeyer said. “He mixes pitches well, so he’s been able to do that. Hopefully he’ll continue to do that and we can get some wins.”

Cougar tales: Eastern Division pitching didn’t allow a hit after the third inning and recorded 16 of its 27 outs via strikeout.

player trio of center fielder Colin Bray, first baseman Marty Herum and infielder Cody Regis, who entered the game for Herum, a last-minute starter, went a combined 0 for 7 with two strikeouts.

Right-handers Markus Solbach and Ethan Elias retired each of the three hitters they faced, with Elias earning a strikeout of West Michigan outfielder Michael Gerber to complete a 1-2-3

It was Elias’ first appearance at Dozer Park. He missed pitching there when the Cougars visited Peoria for a four-game series in May, but wasn’t fazed in his first outing since June 14.

“Baseball’s baseball,” Elias said. “Throw the ball down in the zone and get ground balls. It doesn’t really matter how the ball flies. It’s just a matter of making your pitch; not having to worry about the things that go on.”

All six Cougars All-Stars appeared once righty Cody Geyer entered with one out in the ninth. Geyer allowed two inherited runners to score, however, scattering two hits and one strikeout as part of the East’s three-run ninth.

“To have six guys here and see everyone make it, it’s

pretty cool,” Bray said.

Watch yourself: Speaking on the Fort Wayne TinCaps’ flagship radio station’s broadcast of the game on AM1380 WKJG, first-year MWL president Dick Nussbaum sounded like the attorney he is in assessing the league’s efforts to have its All-Star game televised.

The broadcast aired locally on Comcast SportsNet Plus.

“We kind of fought for that a little bit,” Nussbaum said.

“We think that anytime television televises the Midwest League, they’re going to get an opportunity like this. It’s a great game, great city. A lot of people.”

A crowd of 5,858 attended the game. The 2014 game, a 7-0 victory for the West in Comstock Park, Michigan, attracted 7,046 fans.

Stratman, Porretto among Phantoms playing in college

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com Nick Stratman and Nick Porretto are done with high school and have their baseball futures set.

Stratman will be playing at NAIA Culver-Stockton College in Missouri, while Porretto will head to Division-III Wisconsin-Oshkosh to continue his baseball career.

But there is a still a summer before going away to school and both Stratman and Porretto, among several other local players, are members of the Kane County Phantoms 18U summer baseball team.

“It’s a fun team to be a part of,” said Porretto, who just graduated from Geneva. “We have a lot of team chemistry and we like being around each other. It’s a good time to get to play baseball with your friends.”

“It’s really a good chance

to be around friends and work on things,” said Stratman, who is in his second year with the Phantoms. “Whether it is hitting or fielding, it’s just good to be able to do those things in the summer, around your friends.”

But not only do Porretto and Stratman, a recent Kaneland graduate, get to play alongside their friends for a few more months, but also get a chance to fine tune any skills before heading to play at the next level.

Even though the high school season is over, Porretto sees it as any other summer. He tries to get better each and every time he’s out on the field.

“I don’t treat it any differently,” Porretto said. “I don’t want to say it’s a chance to ‘perfect’ things that need work, but more just a chance to get better and stronger. I look at every summer as trying to make myself the best I can be.”

Porretto joked and said he

won’t get much time off, with his move-in date at Oshkosh in early September followed by practices and workouts starting that same week. Stratman will head to college in late August so has even less time between the end of the Phantoms season and workouts beginning.

The 18U Phantoms are coached by Ernie Colombe, who is also the girls basketball coach at Kaneland. The team has played in two tournaments this summer, catching a bit of bad luck with weather, and are scheduled to compete in five more, including the Great Lakes Championship in Naperville this weekend.

The team has lost just two games, finishing 3-1 in each tournament, but has had bracket and championship play canceled in both because of rain.

Colombe said he has a good group and thinks playing as a member of the Phantoms gives

the players a great opportunity to experience things they may not have on their high school teams.

“Most of these kids come in having been the No. 3 or 4 hitters on their high school teams,” Colombe said. “So they get used to different roles and I think that’s something that prepares them well for the next level.”

“We are also not a very expensive program,” Colombe said. “In the past few years we have had every kid at the 18U level have a chance to play in college, so we tend to develop some pretty good players.”

Thirteen members of the current 15 man roster, according to the Phantoms’ website, are committed to play college baseball.

Geneva summer league updates schedule

Geneva boys basketball coach Phil Ralston confirmed Tuesday night the Geneva summer league basketball tournament will now take place Thursday.

After Monday’s scheduled games were cancelled due to inclement weather, Ralston said the games scheduled for Monday will be played at 4 p.m. today, and the league tournament, which was originally scheduled to start today, will take place Thursday.

Ralston said the primary concern was getting the necessary officials in place for the tournament Thursday.

“Thursday has always been our scheduled makeup date,” Ralston said. “It was just one of those things where the weather didn’t cooperate, so it was nice to have a back-up plan.”

Voland, a sprinter and hurdler at Augustana, is a first team selection for the second year in a row after being named to the third team as a sophomore.

The Batavia Dave Voland native graduated with a 3.83 GPA and a degree in mathematics and secondary education.

Voland was also a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, as well as the Pi Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society.

Voland’s accomplishments go beyond the classroom as he finishes his career as a 11-time All-American, also holding five Augustana school records, including the outdoor 400 hurdles.

ST. CHARLES – Amanda James knew it from the moment she stepped on campus.

James committed Tuesday to Division-II St. Leo in Florida, and after fellow North Star Sam Hausl also made a commitment Tuesday, to Maryville University in St. Louis, St. Charles North now has seven players from its 2015 Class 4A Supersectional team committed to play in college.

“I fell in love with everything there,” James said of her June 17 visit to St. Leo. “From the atmosphere and the people there to the coaches and softball program. It just clicked right away and I knew it was somewhere I wanted to spend my college years.”

As a junior this season, James set the North single-season record for home runs in a season with nine, driving in 29 runs and while scoring 26.

James passed up offers from Northern Kentucky and

el team and knew the heart he has seen in James’ three years with the Silver Hawks, as well as at North, were going to pay off at some point.

“She’s always one of the girls that showed up early and stayed after practice,” Dennison said. “She hits several days a week on her own and and she’s just so relentless at trying to get better” James believes the exposure her travel team gave her was a big reason for getting noticed by several schools.

But more important to James than her travel team experience was the dedication of her parents to helping her with everything in her softball career thus far.

“I don’t know where I would be without them,” James said.

“They have done so much for me from driving me everywhere I needed to go to simple things like helping me fill out paperwork. They have meant so much to me and they are definitely a part of this with me.”

Three-drug regimen works best for treating heart failure Dear Readers: Yesterday, I answered a question about treatments for heart failure. It’s a big topic, and so today I’m talking about the medicines that are typically used to treat heart failure.

As we discussed, heart failure is a condition in which the heart cannot pump efficiently enough to meet the body’s need for blood.

As a result, tissues and organs throughout the body don’t get enough oxygen. Also, fluid builds up in the lungs and other body tissues.

Taking heart failure medicines as prescribed is perhaps the single most important thing you can do to feel better and live longer.

The medicines available today are dramatically more potent than the medicines that were available when I was in medical school.

Most people with heart failure need a three-drug regimen.

This includes a diuretic, a beta blocker, and an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor or an angiotensin-receptor blocker (ARB).

Diuretics are also called water pills. They help the kidneys eliminate the excess sodium and water that builds up because of heart failure. This reduces blood volume, blood pressure, swelling and congestion.

Beta blockers reduce the heart’s workload. At times of

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff stress and during exercise, nerve cells release hormones that stimulate the heart. One such hormone is adrenaline. At first, these hormones cause the heart to pump both faster and more forcefully, giving a brief boost to the performance of a failing heart.

But when persistently high levels of adrenaline keep “whipping” the heart muscle to work harder, the muscle becomes exhausted.

Beta blockers reduce the stimulation of the heart, slow the heart rate, lower blood pressure and decrease the heart’s workload.

When the heart is not being constantly whipped to pump faster and harder, it pumps more efficiently.

ACE inhibitors and ARBs relax blood vessels. They work on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. This is an intricate system that links the brain, heart and kidneys via hormones in the blood. (These hormones are different from adrenaline.)

The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system regulates blood pressure.

In a person with heart failure, the heart’s weak pumping acti-

vates the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. This raises the amount of fluid and sodium in the blood and blood pressure, creating extra work for the already weakened heart. ACE inhibitors and ARBs calm down the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, relaxing blood vessels and relieving high blood pressure.

On my website, AskDoctorK. com, I’ve put a table listing the names, actions and possible side effects of drugs in each of these categories.

Two other types of medicines are sometimes used to treat heart failure: aldosterone blockers and digoxin. Aldosterone blockers are another class of drugs that act on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Digoxin boosts the strength of the heart’s contractions. It used to be the main drug used to treat heart failure, but it was not as potent as the newer drugs and had more serious possible side effects.

In addition, research is developing exciting possible new treatments, particularly a drug called an angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitor.

If you’re enjoying yourself and not hurting the guys you drop so capriciously, then what’s the harm? Flirting is fun for you. All it says to me is that you’re not yet ready for a serious relationship, which, for a 16-year-old, is indeed perfectly normal.
