Geneva soap box derby seeks entrants

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Children interested in participating in a soap box derby will have an opportunity in Geneva – if enough young drivers sign up. A race is set from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on Second Street, between Fulton and Campbell streets, in Geneva, and organizers are seeking entrants.

Those interested can attend a meeting at 6 p.m.

Tuesday. It is open to boys and girls ages 7 to 13, and those interested should call Stan Iglehart at 630-841-8832 or email him at stanleyi@sbcglobal.net for details about the meeting. Kids have until Thursday to enter.

Iglehart said he will need at least 12 drivers to have a race, and he does not have that many at this point. He said the winner earns an opportunity to represent Geneva on July 27 at the FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby Championship in Akron, Ohio.

“We’ll take as many kids as we can get,” Iglehart said.

At the meeting Tuesday, Iglehart said participants will learn about the event

and get familiar with the vehicles.

“All they have to do is run a race,” he said, adding, “it’s a lot of fun.”

Batavia hears from Residents seek aid against coyotes property owners on West Town plans GENEVA

GENEVA – Residents of Fisher Farms and Westhaven subdivision of Geneva pleaded with aldermen Monday to do something about aggressive coyotes in their neighborhoods.

Residents said the city’s stance of educating residents to learn to live with coyotes is no longer working, as the animals are habituated to being around people and are no longer afraid.

Resident Kayla Block said her dog was attacked by two coyotes in the back yard of her home on Harvest Ridge Road. And though the dog’s life was saved, her general freedom to be outdoors is now controlled by coyotes.

“I can’t let my children go

outside,” Block said. “I can’t let them walk the dogs because of the coyotes. ... The coyotes have more freedom to be in my back yard than I do.”

Her neighbor, Brian Darnell, who survived a coyote attack earlier this year that was reported on TV news, said, “The coyotes are habituated to humans and have no fear at all.”

Darnell described trying to walk his dog at 10 p.m. and being stalked by two coyotes working together to get his dog.

Wendy Cullen said she has had encounters with coyotes while out for her morning run from Fisher Farms out to Randall Road.

“I screamed and yelled and he did not move,” Cullen said. “I have seen my … big

dog cower because he knows they’re out there.”

First Ward Alderman Charles Brown, who chaired the committee of the whole meeting, said when the city decided on its coyote policy 10 years ago, there were no reports of coyotes hunting in packs.

“This is something new to address,” Brown said.

Robert Erickson, a DeKalb trapper with 35 years of experience trapping coyotes, told aldermen that killing all coyotes does not make sense – but trapping and removing alpha males and females as he has done in other communities – helps.

Erickson said he uses science – radio collars and a coyote sighting log provided by residents – to catch aggressive coyotes.

City wants to save on parking project

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles city officials said they will explore ways to bring down the cost of its municipal parking lot reconstruction project.

The Government Services Committee on Monday voted 8-0 in favor of recommending approval of a construction services agreement with A Lamp Concrete Contractors for the project, in an amount slightly more than $1.035 million.

Third Ward Alderman Todd Bancroft was absent.

The initial estimated cost for the project was $830,000, but the bids came in higher than expected, said Peter Suhr, the city’s director of public works.

The actual total cost of the project might be reduced by modifying the existing project, such as slightly reducing the landscaping design. A project on Tyler Road also came in under budget in May, so funds

might be reallocated from that effort once the final cost is determined, Suhr said.

The municipal parking lot is directly north of the St. Charles Municipal Building, which is located at 2 E. Main St. in downtown St. Charles.

The project will provide more green space for residents and visitors, improve landscaping along the Fox River and provide a public plaza for art displays or gatherings, according to the city’s executive summary for the recommendation.

The construction services agreement will next go before the St. Charles City Council in July. With full approval, construction on the project might start July 14 and likely be complete by Oct. 3, prior to the start of the Scarecrow Festival on Oct. 10.

Wehr said a memo will be released as early as today that explains the project and what alternative parking options are available. The city also plans to issue press releases about the project as it develops.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – For 30 years, Ollie’s Garage has been part of the neighborhood surrounding the business at 709 Main St. Donna and Dave Beckman, who have owned the family business for 10 years, want to be part of the neighborhood for many more years. They attended an open house Monday hosted by the city of Batavia to hear about possible plans for the area.

“We are a neighborhood business,” Donna Beckman said. “We love our location.

If we can keep doing what we are doing, we will be happy.”

City officials held the meeting to hear from residents and property owners in the city’s West Town area on what their vision is for the neighborhood, and to present the city’s possible plans for the area. The West Town area is centered at the intersection of Main Street and Mallory Avenue, and extends roughly two blocks north and south.

“Our job is to look 50 to 75 years into the future,” City Administrator Bill McGrath told the crowd of about 30 people. “What we are trying

to do is plan for the future.”

McGrath the city does not intend to make any businesses move.

“If existing businesses want to stay there, that is not a problem,” he said.

“There is no plan to forcibly take any property.”

The city has explored creating a tax increment financing district for the area.

Once a municipality creates a TIF, its property assessment is frozen and new or increased taxes generated by improvements are used to pay for improvements or other development incentives.

The area is comprised of both industries still in operation and abandoned buildings, such as a vacant gas station. Master Cast, which supplies permanent mold aluminum castings, is located at the southeast corner of Mallory Avenue and First Street. The building was heavily damaged in a March 5 fire and is set to be demolished.

The West Town area also is comprised of homes and The Elms restaurant. The city’s comprehensive plan calls for a mix of uses in the area, including higher density, single-family uses, as well as industrial uses, city officials said.

A TRUE CHALLENGE Men’s 1,000 mile trip to benefit diabetes association in honor of their fathers

W

hen people learn of Aurora residents Pete Stadalsky and Nolan McClelland’s summer plans, the duo said they are often compared to Mark Twain’s adventurous characters Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer.

Similar to Twain’s fictitious river ramblers, McClelland, 21, and Stadalsky, 25, will take to the water, embarking on a roughly 70day adventure and paddling an estimated 1,000 miles by canoe through Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee to the Gulf of Mexico via Mobile, Alabama.

They will launch their canoe Wednesday from Fontana Lake on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, with hopes of arriving at their final destination by Sept. 7.

The voyage, dubbed Paddle to Cure Diabetes, aims to raise $10,000 for the American Diabetes Association, a charitable cause that is close to both of their hearts.

“Initially, it was a personal adventure, but we wanted it to have more meaning, and something that meant a lot to both of us was [that] both of our dads are diabetic,” Stadalsky said, adding that both of them grew up seeing their fathers’ daily struggles with Type I diabetes, which includes daily injections, food calculations and blood-glucose monitoring. “It’s been a real [symbolic] thing for me. We picked a challenge to represent the challenges our dads had growing up.”

Despite both of their fathers being absent from the actual canoe trip, they said the pre-planning phase has been a bonding experience for both families.

Clelland said of his father, who also has contributed to ADA through the Tour de Cure, a nationwide cycling fundraising event.

Stadalsky had similar sentiments about his own father.

“It’s awesome to see my dad really want to be a part of something I’m doing in my life – it means a lot to me,” Stadalsky said.

In addition to ADA, the

duo is accepting donations made to a separate fundraising account that will help put a dent in the estimated $5,000 trip total.

Stadalsky, a Starbucks manager and yoga instructor, and McClelland, a Zumiez skate shop manager and jewelry artist, said their initial investment for gear, supplies and equipment – such as their Old Town Penobscot Canoe they bought on Craigslist for $400 – has totaled $3,000.

Additional costs for food and other necessities during the trip are projected to cost $1,500, Stadalsky wrote in an email.

As of June 23, they’ve managed to raise $6,259 for ADA and $3,411 for trip expenses.

appealing to the complete disconnect from technology and the fast-paced daily life, where this gives us a chance to just slow down, relax and enjoy being out in nature solely,” McClelland said.

They will use their cellphones, powered by a solar portable charger, in cases of emergency and to relay trip updates and photos to their parents, who will update their blog during their trip every few days, Stadalsky said.

The men agreed that the trip also will provide an opportunity for introspection.

“Traveling for me is spiritual, as well as a way to get away from the hustle and bustle. ...” Stadalsky said. “[The canoe trip] will give me time to digest on a personal level. With computers, books my job, my studies in school, that’s a lot of information, and for me not to slow down and process that, it’s hard to know who I am and what I want to do.”

Upon reaching their destination, they said they’ll look forward to being reacquainted with friends and family, as well as fulfilling more basic needs.

“A shower would be the most exciting thing we could ask for,” McClelland said.

They said they are “fully prepared to pay the difference using their own money,” if necessary.

McClelland and Stadalsky – friends and roommates who met two years ago – picked up paddling again after an-almost decade-long hiatus. In response to whether they’re ready to navigate the Tennessee River and Tombigbee Waterway, Stadalsky said that “the insanity of the trip is what makes it worthwhile,” but that they are fully prepared.

Pre-trip preparation included research, paddling lessons, safety and water-rescue training and extensive time spent out on the water.

“This trip has been an obsession for me – it’s all I do,” Stadalsky said. “We’re trying to account for every possible situation we might encounter.”

Experience gained from past travels – such as resourcefulness – also will come in handy during their journey into the wild, Stadalsky said.

“I hitchhiked; drove motorcycles; a scooter; lived in a van; lived in a car on a beach; pretty much just any mode I could figure out,” Stadalsky said of spending two years traveling across the U.S. McClelland is no slouch in the travel department himself, having spent time working in orphanages in Indonesia and living on a catamaran in the Florida Keys.

Though McClelland and Stadalsky are both seasoned travelers, they agreed, that the canoe trip will be the “roughest” trip either of them have ever taken. They will navigate the river without the use of a GPS or a motor.

Instead, they will solely rely on maps and a compass and tent-camp in the wilderness each night.

CAMPTON HILLS – A Campton Hills man faces a charge of misdemeanor drunken driving after crashing a $65,000 dealership-owned vehicle in the village, according to a Campton Hills police report.

Police responded to Hidden Oaks Road north of Route 64 at about 9:40 p.m.

June 14 to find a Mercedes with dealer plates in a ditch east of the intersection with Old Burlington Road, police reported.

Although the vehicle – a 2014 ML350 – was in the ditch, police said tire tracks indicated it had traveled up

the adjacent steep, grassy hill before coming to rest.

Police described the SUV as having “extensive damage” and noted debris – mostly various car parts – littered the area.

Additionally, police reported, a stop sign on Old Burlington Road was “completely gone.” The post had been sheared off at the roadway base, and responding officers could not find the sign or the post, police said.

The driver – identified as Michael G. Goduco, 25, of the 39W100 block of Longmeadow Lane, Campton Hills – reportedly was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva for treatment.

Goduco reportedly told police he had been drinking and took the vehicle without his father’s permission.

Area businesses fined for liquor license violations KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Two St. Charles liquor license holders face repercussions, including fines, for violating the city’s liquor rules, the city announced Monday in a news release.

Alley 64, 212 W. Main St., received a citation March 4 for staying open for business and letting individuals remain within its premises when the sale of alcohol is prohibited.

After a series of continuances and a June hearing, the downtown establishment was ordered to pay $1,000 in fines and $1,222 in court costs and legal fees. Its liquor license also will be suspended from 12:01 to 2 a.m. July 12.

to sit down together and say something like, ‘Split the difference between the two appraisals,’ ” Lauzen said. “We want to be good partners with them. We want to get the maximum value for the taxpayers of the property. ... It has to be a fair, obvious compromise.”

Lauzen said the county wants to sell the property because the building is too expensive to maintain. Geneva Library Board president Esther Steel said she agrees with Lauzen that the building should be put on the market to measure its value.

Though property acquisition is on the agenda for a closed session at the library board’s meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday at the library, 127 James St., Steel said no action will be taken.

Also at Thursday’s meeting, library architect Anthony Oliver of Cordogan, Clark and Associates will give a report of a space use study on the current library building.

“We have a brand-new director starting. Why should she have to figure out who I am, have me leave and then have someone new on the board?” Andersson said.

“The budget is now coming up, and I’m also the treasurer,” Andersson said. “It does not make sense for the person who is treasurer to be the short-timer when he is responsible for the budget for the full year.”

Andersson said one of his main goals on the library board was to get a full and fair presentation of space use at the library. A presentation is expected this week on a space use study.

“I kind of feel like the timing could not be better,” Andersson said. “I feel like I fulfilled many of my goals.”

Andersson said he thoroughly enjoyed serving on the library the past six years.

“I learned a lot about good government,” Andersson said. “I really value the relationships I developed with various members through the years. And I look forward to presenting the people of Geneva and a larger capacity. I will not forget my passion for the library when I go down to Springfield.”

Andersson won the Republican primary March 18 and does not face opposition in the general election. Library board president Esther Steel said the library would seek out a replacement for Andersson. The replacement would serve until a two-year seat would be open in the April 2015 election.

“We are going to miss Steve,” Steel said. “Steve has been a valuable, contributing member to our board. He will be sorely missed. I’m happy for him. I think he will do great things in Springfield, and I am looking forward to watching him do that next chapter.”

GENEVA – Geneva Library and Kane County officials are working on the potential sale of the Sixth Street School property to see what offers would come in from private developers.

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said the county’s next step is a resolution for a real estate expert to get the property on the market.

“What will the market say is the true cost?” Lauzen asked.

The county owns the former school at 210 S. Sixth St., Geneva. The library has been interested in the site as a location for a new library building.

The property is 90,000 square feet, with a 24,332-square-foot, three-story former school, built in 1924, in a residential area of Geneva’s historic downtown. The

Kane County Regional Office of Education is currently housed in the building.

This spring, both library and county officials sought new appraisals for the Sixth Street property in anticipation of the county planning to sell it.

The library’s appraisal range was $750,000 to $1.2 million, officials said. Lauzen said the county’s appraisal was $1.7 million to $1.95 million – which includes $250,000 for razing the building.

“With such a disparity there, we have several options to consider,” Lauzen said. “The basic option is – which one of these very knowledgeable appraisals is closer to the reality of the market?”

The library has the right of first refusal, so if a developer makes an offer, the library can match any price that comes in, Lauzen said.

OBITUARIES WALTER ALEXANDER Born: Jan. 5, 1935 Died: June 20, 2014 GENEVA – Walter Alexander, 79, died peacefully at his home in Geneva on Friday, June 20, 2014, in the loving embrace of his family. Born in Aurora, on Jan. 5, 1935, Walter was the eldest son of John and Berniece (Hill) Alexander.

Walter was educated at Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts and Yale University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in economics. Walt, as he was known to his friends, was widely respected for his integrity and intelligence in both his personal and professional life.

Until recently, Walter was president of Alexander Lumber Company, a position he held for 45 years. The third generation Alexander to hold this office, he learned the lumber business from the ground up, working summers in company lumber yards.

After his graduation and two years of military service, Walt returned to the company serving as manager in several different yards and as a district manager before assuming the office of president in 1966.

Walt was known for his unsurpassed work ethic and his commitment to the welfare of his employees.

In addition to his long career at the lumber company, Walter served on the boards of local and national organizations, including the Old Second Bancorp, Ideal Industries Inc., Wausau Paper Corporation and Masonite Corporation, a company founded by his family.

He also served as chairman of the board of Aurora University and Delnor Hospital.

Walter leaves behind his beloved wife of 55 years, Karen Bisgard Alexander; four children, Blair Alexander of Carpentersville, Eliza Cum-

She was born Dec. 2, 1960, in Aurora, the daughter of James and Fran (McKay) Gerhardt.

Cathy was a valued member of the Geneva Police Department for more than 33 years. She began her career with Geneva in 1981 as a parking control enforcement officer, later becoming a community service officer, and in 1999 she moved to her current position as police records specialist.

The city’s flag is flying at halfstaff in her honor. Cathy enjoyed

bowling, and she loved animals, especially horses and owls. She will be dearly missed by all those whose lives she touched.

She is survived by her twin sons, Ernie of Cortland and Robert (Sherri) of Georgia; grandson, Landon; siblings, James (Patricia) Gerhardt of South Carolina, Debra (Charles) Lentz of Batavia, Patricia (Nick) Stark of Aurora, Kevin Gerhardt of St. Charles and Mary (James) Jordan of Carthage, Illinois; and many dear nieces and nephews who knew her as “Aunt Bub.” She also is survived by Ernie and Robert’s father, Michael Baldwin of Carthage, Illinois.

Her parents began High Lake Poultry and Kings Drive Inn Broasted Chicken on Roosevelt and Kress Roads, where she work many years. She attended West Chicago High School and graduated in 1950.

Viv enjoyed traveling and going on cruises with her husband, Ed. She was an accomplished knitter.

Viv’s great witty sense of humor will be greatly missed.

United Way looking for part-time executive

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Batavia United Way is turning its executive director post from a full-time position to a part-time position so the nonprofit organization can dedicate more of its resources to the programs it funds.

“We want to continue to fulfill our responsibility to our donors,” Batavia United Way Board President Ann Gerardi said. “We want to make sure that we are giving every penny we can to the programs we fund.”

The Batavia United Way raises funds for programs that directly benefit Batavia residents. The organization currently helps funds programs for 18 different agencies, Gerardi said.

Jody Haltenhof had been the group’s executive director for about 14 years, Gerardi said. She recently left the organization after the board made the decision to make the full-time position part-time. It previously had been a part-time position, Gerardi said.

“When she started, it was very part-time,” she said. The position became full-time about two years ago, Gerardi said.

The new Batavia United Way executive director will work between 10 to 15 hours a week, according to the position’s job description.

“It could potentially become more,” Gerardi said.

“We want to get the right person in there as soon as possible,” Gerardi said.

Geneva gets taste of Swedish culture Traditional dishes served downtown

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Karen Pedersen had heard about the traditional Swedish dish of lutfisk for years, but she never tried it before Saturday.

Pedersen finally got her first taste of the dried cod dish during her first trip to the Swedish Days Festival in Geneva with her husband, Harold.

“I didn’t think I would like it, but it tasted good,” said Pedersen, an Addison resident.

The Pedersens were among the many groups of people who came to experience the Sweden Väst on Saturday and Sunday during the festival. The event was held under a large white tent on Fourth Street between State and Hamilton streets in down-

town Geneva.

Sweden Väst, which features art, food, live music and dancing, became a part of the festival in 2012, said Laura Rush, Geneva Chamber of Commerce spokeswoman.

“We did this to bring the Swedish back to Swedish Days,” Rush said.

In addition to the lutfisk, other Swedish food offerings included limpa bread, lingonberries and meatballs. Ann Waldo, 11, and her brother John, 8, had the Swedish meatballs and Swedish soda for lunch, said their mother, Beth Waldo.

The Waldo children also enjoyed fighting a Viking, portrayed by Garett Schweikhofer of Batavia, outside the event tent with a foam sword and shield.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The only thing more abundant than Shriners in Sunday’s Swedish Days Parade in Geneva were the smiles of onlookers who lined the streets at the capper event of the six-day festival.

Whether they were dance teams, horses, Dixieland and marching bands, bagpipers and Shriners – in little cars, carts, horses, fire trucks and motorcycles, fez tassels flying – all brought cheers, claps and waves.

“I like everything about the parade,” said Beverly De Martini, 86, a Geneva resident.

“My two daughters – Diane Coughlin and Carol De Martini Smith – were in it. They carried the ‘Valkommen’ sign and they carry the ‘See you next

De Martini said she always has been a big fan of the Swedish Days parade.

“I love the bands,” De Martini said. “I love the Boy Scouts, I love the [Jesse White] Tumblers. I love the children.

I love everybody. I love the patriotic theme, of course. I can’t say enough for Geneva.”

For several onlookers, the annual parade in the sunny 86-degree June warmth, also was a clear a sign of summer after a particularly harsh winter.

Saturday marked the Waldos’ return to Swedish Days from their Hinsdale home after a few years hiatus.

“I think they’ve added more things that are traditionally Swedish,” said Adam Waldo, Ann and John’s father.

Ingrid Rowlett was dressed Swedish from head to toe while she served lut-

fisk. She wore a traditional Swedish costume from the Östergötland province in Southern Sweden. Rowlett is the owner and president of I.B. Quality Cabinets in Geneva.

Rowlett’s sister had a handmade display case under the tent that included wood carvings, Swedish Christmas decorations and krona, the currency of Sweden.

“I think a lot of people come to enjoy the Swedish traditions,” Rowlett said.

St. Charles, who used to live in Geneva, said they come back every year for the festival and the parade since 1990.

“I like the Wacky Wheels guy, the Second Time Around Band,” Debbie Keith said.

“I just like the fact that it’s so Americana, and it makes summer feel like it’s here – finally – it’s summer. I love it.”

Hope for the oceans of the world THE WASHINGTON POST Humanity depends on the oceans, but their worsening state gets little attention. Good for Secretary of State John Kerry, then, for trying to elevate the issue last week in an international oceans conference in Washington.

The conference produced a billion dollars in pledges for ocean programs, promises from other nations to better protect their marine ecosystems and the news that President Barack Obama will set aside a vast portion of U.S. waters in the central Pacific for ecological conservation.

That’s all to the good. But the health of the oceans – sources of employment, recreation and food for billions – depends on what Kerry and those like him can get other nations to do.

Obama’s plan is to protect almost 700,000 square miles of Pacific habitat adjacent to islands and atolls the United States controls. Because the president has authority to preserve precious natural landand aqua-scapes, and because the United States controls more of the planet’s oceans than anyone else, Obama is perhaps the person on the planet with the most power to protect the seas with a stroke of a pen.

The White House will solicit feedback over the next few months, after which Obama might amend his ocean plan.

But, like Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush before him, Obama should not shrink from using his powers to preserve pristine ecological treasures.

Even with the preservation of some habitat, though, people will need to do a better job of managing the exploitation

of ocean resources that will continue. According to a 2012 analysis from California Environmental Associates, “over 40 percent of fisheries have crashed or are overfished, producing economic losses in excess of $50 billion per year.”

Some 80 percent of the world’s catch is pulled in from unmonitored fisheries. Desperate fishermen, many in developing countries, are spending more time and traveling further to catch fewer fish. About two-thirds of unmonitored stocks could provide more fish on a sustainable basis – with the right oversight.

The United States has gone a long way to fixing its regulation, deploying a system that gives fishermen ownership interests in the long-term health of their fisheries. This model could work in many other places, if those nations could enforce the rules on which the system depends. The United States can and should help other governments develop this capacity, though it ultimately will be up to foreign leaders to act in their nations’ best interest.

Then there is the issue of ocean acidification, driven by the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

The ocean is absorbing huge amounts of the greenhouse gas, which will, over time, kill coral, shellfish and other creatures sensitive to a lower pH. The problem demands worldwide effort, led by the United States, to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide pumped into the air.

Efforts to curtail overfishing or reduce carbon emissions will not be easy, not least because both require many countries to work together. But the consequences of inaction are frightful.

Vikings volleyball coach a fiery competitor

A

nnie Seitelman missed a few sporadic points during the Geneva girls volleyball team’s banner 2013 season.

The excitable approach Vikings players and fans will see as she takes the reins this fall isn’t an act to make up for lost time. It’s simply Seitelman.

The former Indiana middle blocker traded in her Hoosiers crimson years ago, yet she still can’t seem to curb her enthusiasm.

“Yeah, I’m a competitor,” Seitelman said. “I mean, having been a Division I athlete and stuff, I don’t know if that ever really goes away. But yeah, that’s the thing. As a player, I’ve fed off of coaches’ energy and things like that, and I feel that that’s something – especially with kids at this age – that kids need that.”

Seitelman, who takes over for longtime program staple K.C. Johnsen, figured out that much as the Vikings’ sophomore coach and varsity assistant last fall.

Sometimes, she scurried to the bench from an adjacent court if the sophomore match ran long, but her observation truly clicked as she worked full-time with the varsity during the postseason.

A young core – including then-freshmen right-side hitters Ally Barrett and Grace Loberg – blended quickly with veterans such as Maryland-bound libero Kelsey Wicinski and middle Maddie Courter, both juniors.

The Vikings stormed to the program’s first sectional title, winning 29 matches along the way.

With 11 players potentially back from last season, Seitelman figures the Vikings should be ready to shout alongside her come the team’s Aug. 26 season opener against Rosary.

“Seeing kind of the growing pains that every team has, and I was trying to figure out chemistry and who works best with who and communicationwise with our passing [last season],” Seitelman said. “I think every team kind of goes

Seitelman, the former Annie Moddrell, shined at downstate Freeburg in her prep career. After college, the physical education teacher remained in the Midwest, coaching lower-level girls at Indianapolis’ Bishop Chatard High in the falls of 2010 and 2011.

She dabbled in college coaching in 2012, assisting now-husband James Seitelman at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. The couple moved to Illinois a few months later, as James Seitelman was named Aurora University

women’s volleyball coach in the winter of 2013.

That’s when Annie Seitelman’s path to Geneva began to unfurl. Her ties to Johnsen’s daughter, Coley Pawlikowski – “through kind of the volleyball world,” Seitelman said – led her to Johnsen and the Kane County Jrs. club led by his wife, Phyllis.

A spot with the Jrs. staff soon dovetailed with Johnsen asking Seitelman to serve as Geneva’s boys JV coach. She accepted, balancing that role with substitute teaching in Geneva District 304. By the time Seitelman joined Geneva’s faculty full-time in the fall, a spot with the girls program was elementary.

Geneva girls basketball coach Sarah Meadows, whose desk is next to Seitelman’s in the school’s PE office, noticed her new colleague’s energy and diligence right away.

“Great, great person and a great addition to Geneva volleyball,” Meadows said. “She’ll do great with that program because everyone respects her.”

Loberg, who starred for both Johnsen and Meadows during a dazzling debut sports season, also formed a bond with Seitelman, her PE teacher.

Loberg’s mother, Colleen, discovered a tie, too. Colleen Loberg was a Hoosiers middle hitter in the early 1990s, providing an easy, early talking point with Seitelman.

“What a small world, huh?”

Colleen Loberg said. “First time I met her, she came up.

I was like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ So that is very exciting for her.

Coach K.C. was great to Grace, so supportive, and it’s nice having Annie. She’s excited.

So it will be fun. She’s ready to work them. A great group of girls.”

Johnsen’s departure also creates a void atop the boys program, but a replacement has yet to be determined.

Until further notice, Seitelman isn’t worried about that matter as she juggles closing on a house with preparing for the upcoming girls season.

She has held a handful of open gyms this month for any players looking to shake off rust or get touches before camp and summer league ramps up in July.

“I’m excited to take over with the amount of potential that we have … only graduating three seniors last year,” Seitelman said. “I look for, you know, some really good things, but as always, one of the tough things is, too, it’s a competitive program.”

Just a few years removed from her own playing days, Seitelman would know more than most.

By JAKE BARTELSON jbartelson@shawmedia.com GENEVA – While most people flock to Swedish Days for food, outdoor shopping, and enjoying the weather, others converge on the basketball courts to participate in the 3-on-3 competitive tournaments for kids and adults.

Some do it for the fun and competition, while others use it to keep in shape and start preparing for the basketball season like Geneva native K.J. Santos.

Santos, a 6 foot-7 combo-guard, is preparing to begin his junior season at South Kent School in Connecticut after he has reclassified his graduation year to 2016. As for the reason for the transfer, Santos cites getting his body ready for his eventual college basketball career and improving his grades.

He spent last season at Vermont Academy, after spending two years at Geneva High School.

“The [New England Preparatory School Athletic Council] is the best prep basketball league in the country,” said Santos. “I thought it would be good for me to play the best competition.”

On Monday, Wichita State became the latest school to offer a scholarship to Santos, who also has offers from Iowa, Xavier, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Penn State, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, DePaul, Rhode Island, Tulsa and VCU. “It makes me feel good all my hard work is paying off,” he said.

did not win the tournament, as Jason Rader’s “Hold My Own” team captured that honor. Led

by Rader, the team featured his brother, Josh, and friends Ken Burgdorf and Max Cary.

They’ve competed in the tournament since 1997.

“We [went] from being one of the youngest teams [when we first started] to being one of the oldest ones,” Jason Rader said.

The quartet has a unique connection, as at one time, all four were once captains of the Geneva varsity basketball team, with Bergdorf starting the trend in 1996, followed by Jason Rader in 1997. Josh Rader captained the team in 1999, and, most recently, Cary in 2008. Today, the Rader brothers and Burgdorf compete in a men’s basketball league through the Geneva Park Dis-

trict.

“It was cool having college-level players in the tournament … it’s a competitive tournament, not a cakewalk.

The guys running it were phenomenal,” Rader said.

The quartet plans to compete again next year.

Earlier in the afternoon, in the 13-15 year-old bracket, four incoming Batavia freshmen – Quinlan Hagen, Will Freiburger, Riley Cooper and Andrew Heinz – took home first-place honors. The team has played in the tournament together the past couple years.

Participation in the summer tournament had increased this year, up 14 from the previous year, as it gives the opportunity for former teammates to play with one another again, much like former Geneva basketball and track and field team member, Jason D’Amico.

D’Amico has competed in the tournament for the past three or four years, is set to be a thrower at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He uses the tournament to keep in shape and have fun with his friends, while competing against a “wide range of people and [abilities].”

The tournament is a great way “to bring the community together and promote basketball in the area,” said Geneva Park District athletic facility supervisor, and tournament director Keith Schmerer.

Summer facility improvements underway at East, North

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Both St. Charles East and St. Charles North are replacing their outdoor track surfaces this summer and East also is installing new tennis courts.

Work on each of the projects is underway and expected to be completed in time for the new school year in August.

John Baird, assistant superintendent for operations for District 303, said the track and related drainage work at East will cost about $550,000,

while the project at North will cost about $340,000. Baird said East’s project is more involved because East has an older track that requires more foundational work.

Team REIL, out of Union, in McHenry County, is handling both track replacements, with the North project likely to be wrapped up first, Baird said.

The tennis courts replacement at East, meanwhile, is being done by West Chicago-based Evans & Son Blacktop, Inc. Replacing the courts, along with refurbishment of the nearby driver’s ed parking

lot, will cost about $516,000, according to Baird.

East athletic director Mike Sommerfeld said the track and tennis improvements at East have been in the works as part of a long-range plan.

“The tennis courts, that was just us trying to be proactive,” Sommerfeld said.

“These things get placed on a schedule for budgetary reasons. There are costs associated with them, so [the district makes sure] there are not so many big projects going on in one year.”

Sommerfeld said the con-

struction will cause few logistical challenges this summer, although East’s tennis camps have been shifted to North. He said the upgrades to the northeast end of campus should be well-received by East teams – and their opponents.

“I think, overall, we’ve done a pretty good job updating our facilities probably over the last 10 years or so,” Sommerfeld said. “These two projects just are going to fit in nicely. They’ll be brand-new and shiny so when teams do come I’m sure they’ll be impressed with these two facil-

ities, and they’ll complement our outside facilities we have with baseball and softball as well.”

East and North could soon be joined by Batavia as Tri-Cities schools with new track surfaces.

Replacing Batavia’s track is recommended as part of the agenda for tonight’s school board meeting.

Eventually installing a turf field has been a discussion point at Batavia in recent months but the district is zeroing in on a new track as a separate project.

Go where they tell them: Barring a potential postseason meeting, the weekend marked the Kernels’ final visit to Kane County in 2014. Cedar Rapids’ only other series at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark came a week before the AllStar break, when the Cougars won two of three from June 7 to 9.

“It’s been kind of a goofy schedule all the way around this year,” Kernels manager Jake Mauer said. “It seems like we don’t play teams for like, six weeks, then play them two or three times in a two-week period. I don’t know if that’s just how it laid out this year, but we like coming here. They always do a nice job here. The service is good, and a good atmosphere here, so it’s always fun to come here.”

Safe at home: Left-hander Michael Heesch rejoined the Cougars from extended spring training May 24, but the Prairie Ridge alum and one-time Bartlett resident still hooked up with a host family.

It’s nothing personal regarding his parents, Fred and Terrie. They simply retired to Florida in the offseason.

Heesch enjoyed literal and figurative home cooking with the Cougars in 2013, staying at the family’s then-Bartlett home while going 3-9 with a 3.78 ERA in 22 games and 20 starts.

He has made six relief appearances this season, compiling a 3.86 ERA while striking out 13 in 9⅓ innings.

Heesch’s parents recently arrived for a monthlong visit.

“I’m like, ‘Go home. Enjoy your retirement,’ ” Heesch grinned.

Mundy moves into starting safety role

By NATE ATKINS natkins@chicagofootball.com When the final huddle of minicamp broke, Ryan Mundy retreated to his locker, where his Bears pads lay on the floor in an unzipped bag.

The gray plastic glimmered a bit under the Halas Hall lights. It’s been his since he signed a contract with the Bears, but after OTAs and minicamp without pads, it has yet to receive a Mundy scratch.

Does the sixth-year safety feel an itch?

“Right now? No,” he said.

“Maybe in a few weeks.”

He’s referring to training camp, which will start July 25 in Bourbonnais. He’ll lace up with the pads tight on his frame, and he’ll finally show the team what he’d promised he’d bring with him from his days in Pittsburgh and New York. In a few weeks, Mundy will hit people.

But Thursday, as he stuffed clothing into travel bags and readied to leave, Mundy stood contrary to the archaic view of NFL safeties. He’d just spent the final practice in shorts, where hitting wasn’t allowed.

Instead, he performed drills in which he ran backward at a 45-degree angle until the quarterback threw the ball on an out pattern, which is the moment he’d break on the route for an interception.

Hitting might not be everything for an NFL safety, but timing is, and the start of a five-week vacation before minicamp is Mundy’s time to move. He’d spend the next day and a half stuffing more equipment into travel bags and boxes to transport to his first house in Chicago. The only thing separating his pads from the items he has yet to pack is that he knows exactly where those need to go.

This part is as important as any other. Mundy isn’t joining just any NFL defense. He’s not moving to any old town to do it, either. He’s joining the Bears, a unit that struggled to stop anybody a year ago in a town where fourth-and-long is supposed to be both an open-

Bears sign 5-time Pro Bowl safety Wilson The Bears added veterans at two positions of need on Monday, signing five-time Pro Bowl safety Adrian Wilson and tight end Jeron Mastrud to one-year deals.

Wilson, who turns 35 in October, spent 12 seasons with the Cardinals from 2001 to 2012. He has played in 181 games (162 starts), making 893 tackles, 25.5 sacks, 87 passes defensed, 27 interceptions and 14 forced fumbles.

Last offseason, Wilson signed a three-year deal with the Patriots but tore his Achilles tendon in the preseason finale. New England released Wilson on April 4.

A 6-foot-3, 230-pound safety, Wilson will join Brock Vereen, Chris Conte and M.D. Jennings in the competition to start alongside Ryan Mundy in the Bears’ defensive backfield.

“Anytime you think of the Chicago Bears, you think of toughness, particularly on defense,” Mundy said.

“I came in here as an open book, as a sponge, learning how the Chicago Bears, Coach [Mel] Tucker, Coach [Jon] Hoke and [assistant] Chris Harris want me to play safety,” Mundy said.

But the Bears are looking for answers as well, ones they couldn’t find during last year’s forgettable defensive possessions. They used free agency to acquire established starters like Mundy, Jared Allen and Lamarr Houston in addition to what they added through the draft. Whereas some starters are rookies they’ll morph and shape into their model of a Bear defender, others they are trusting to bring their own brand of defensive instincts.

“You don’t have to reinvent yourself because obviously, I did something right to get here,” Mundy said. “They like something that I did before, so you have to hold onto that a little bit.”

GENEVA – Cougars righthanders Pierce Johnson and Jen-Ho Tseng showed their arms off before a crowd Saturday night.

It just wasn’t the way they were originally thinking.

The initial plan called for the tandem to piggyback against Cedar Rapids, but a rainout reduced them to a brief round o f c a t c h a s Pierce Johnson fans in the right field party deck looked on.

Both pitchers threw in separate games of Sunday’s double- Jen-Ho Tseng header, which the Cougars s p l i t t o c a pture three of four games in the first series of the second half.

J o h n s o n , Michael r e h a b b i n g Heesch from hamstring and calf injuries after landing on the disabled list with Double-A Tennessee last month, took the loss in the opener after spacing one run, three hits, two walks and two strikeouts in four innings.

Johnson opened 2013 with the Cougars and earned a midseason promotion to Advanced-A Daytona, helping the club to a Florida State League title.

The parent Cubs plan to re-evaluate him after a few starts as he boosts his pitch count and stamina.

“Pierce moved pretty quick, and I think he’s happy with where he’s at right now

and he feels like he’s going to start building and progressing,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said. “It’s just sometimes, you’ve got to reset.”

What we don’t know: What’s Anthony’s asking price? Then there’s Derrick Rose, who is good friends with Kevin Love. Sources indicated Rose was initially cool on Anthony over Love, but has since changed his stance.

Best-case scenario: Anthony is a man of his word, and can live comfortably off endorsement money, plus the pay-cut he would take to play

with Noah and Rose.

Bulls’ nightmare: Anthony drags the process on while good friend LeBron James makes “The Decision 2.0,” using the Bulls before eventually leaving them empty-handed to team with James.

FALLING OUT OF LOVE Two weeks ago, several sources indicated the Bulls had the best offer on the table for the Minnesota Timberwolves to deal Kevin Love. A lot can happen in two weeks.

What we know: Rose not only has a strong friendship with Love, but the two are workout partners. Love wants to play for a winner and indicated that the Bulls were one of the places he would like to land if Minnesota does trade him.

What we don’t know: Reports out of Minnesota have the Timberwolves back and forth on when they want to move Love. Also, for any team to acquire Love

they need to know what his asking price is after he can opt out of his contract next season.

Best-case scenario: The Bulls move picks 16 and 19 to Minnesota, along with Gibson and Tony Snell. Playing with Rose is more important than a max deal for Love, so he inks an extension for $14 million a year, allowing the Bulls to still add pieces.

Bulls’ nightmare: Golden State ups the ante, Love goes to the Bay, and Steve Kerr holds up a trophy before Thibodeau.

DEPTH CHARGE As the Spurs showed in the Finals in beating Miami, a deep bench is never a bad thing. The NBA is a copycat league, and with the Bulls severely short-handed the past few years, well, more bodies are definitely required.

What we know: Arron Afflalo is on the trade radar for a draft pick, and Nikola Mirotic is in Spain, waiting

to see if this is the year he plays in the NBA, while there are a handful of solid free agents who can give Thibodeau a much deeper team.

What we don’t know: With James, Anthony and even Chris Bosh all unknowns, would going the depth route even be good enough to overcome a roster with three superstars on it? At least in the Eastern Conference it hasn’t worked yet.

Best-case scenario: Afflalo is acquired for a pick, the Bulls add Adreian Payne with their other pick, Mirotic waits one more season, while Shawn Marion and Devin Harris come on the cheap, thanks to Carlos Boozer being amnestied.

Bulls nightmare: Big-name free agents go elsewhere, middle-name free agents aren’t interested, and on opening night 2014-15, Bulls fans have to hear Boozer yell “Gimme dat!’’ on the first rebound he grabs. And yes, he’s still in a Bulls uniform.

Hawks teammates relax on eve of NHL awards show

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com LAS VEGAS – Jonathan Toews wore a white polo shirt, a white cap and golf spikes, his sunglasses tucked into his shirt collar.

He looked tanned and rested and sounded a little hoarse after an evening in Las Vegas that included attending the Beatles “Love” Cirque du Soleil show at the Mirage.

Toews, a finalist for the Selke Trophy in town for the NHL awards show today, was looking forward to heading outside to play a round of golf at the Wynn with his fellow nominees in the 106-degree heat.

So, no, Toews and his Blackhawks teammates aren’t spending their summer sulking about how they were one bounce away from beating the eventual champion

Los Angeles Kings in the Western Conference final and possibly winning their second consecutive Stanley Cup and third in five years.

But the overtime loss in Game 7 and the Kings’ coronation still hurt.

“It’s hard to watch,” Toews said. “We just didn’t score that one extra goal. No one really cares anymore.

L.A. walked away with the Stanley Cup at the end of the day. There’s not a benefit to that.”

The playoffs exposed a few of the Hawks’ flaws, most notably the long-standing void at second-line center, which sources say have general manager Stan Bowman pondering a major move at the draft this weekend. With star centers Ryan Kesler (Vancouver Canucks), Jason Spezza (Ottawa Senators) and Joe Thornton (San Jose Sharks)

But the Kings’ five-game victory against the New York Rangers in the Final also served as a reminder of just how agonizingly close the Hawks – as currently constituted – came to another Cup. “We didn’t win a championship this year, but we came pretty darn close,” Toews said. “And if it comes to just making small tweaks to our locker room, to our roster, hopefully that’s the

Duncan Keith, up for his second Norris Trophy, said it would be especially tough – and more “personal” – to lose a member of the Hawks’ core to a trade, but he acknowledged the team can get better.

In the NHL, most offseason moves happen in a flurry on draft weekend because all the GMs are under one roof together. Even on a team with the stability of the Hawks, it’s a stressful time. After all, two-time Cup champion Dave Bolland was dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs less than a week after scoring the Cup-winning goal last season.

“We’re kind of used to these types of things,’’ Keith said. “I don’t know if that makes it any easier. You

never like to see anybody get traded. But who knows what’ll happen?”

This summer will be a lot different than last summer, which was an endless celebratory bar crawl through Chicago and hometowns across North America and Europe. It’s a longer offseason and a more restful one, which the Hawks only can hope leads to another short and exhausting one next year.

“You can actually get some time to yourself,” Toews said. “There’s nothing wrong with that. When you win, everyone wants a piece of you. It’s all exciting, the attention that the Stanley Cup brings – not only in Chicago but when you have it back in your hometown.

A machine, probably the first, was used in England in 1715, and another was patented in 1844. But the Elias Howe (1845) and Isaac Singer (1851) machines were the ones that gained fame and sold by the thousands. Women were expected to hand-embroider monograms on bedding and towels, cut and sew parts of a dress properly, and be able to mend. The mistress of the house was expected to sew in the evening, and equipment and fabrics were stored in a table in the living room near a warm fireplace.

The wealthy of the 19th century had tools, scissors, bobbins, tape measures, thimbles and more made of gold or silver, stored in a fancy case. Twentieth-century housewives had metal or plastic tools and a sewing machine. At a January 2014 Theriault’s sale, a collection of sewing utensils brought high prices. A tape measure shaped like a sewing machine sold for $504. An English silver piglet topped by a purple velvet pincushion sold for $224. And a cash-metal thimble with brass finish sold for $112.

Look in Grandma’s sewing basket and junk drawer. There may be sewing treasures hidden in a corner. *** Q: I have a pottery casserole dish stamped with a Wilkinson Royal Staffordshire mark. I think the casserole dates to the 1890s from what I have learned about the mark.

A: Arthur J. Wilkinson took over the Royal Staffordshire Pottery in Burslem, England, in 1885. The company, known as A.J. Wilkinson, Ltd., continued to operate for more than a century. Some Royal Staffordshire casseroles, even from the 1890s, sell for under $20. Others sell for prices in the hundreds. *** Q: My mother bought a rocker at a Goodwill store in the 1960s for about $10. When we brought it home, Dad found a crest and date under the seat. It says “S. Bent & Bros., Inc., Gardner, Mass., 1867.”

Think about how you would make other muscles in your body strong, such as your arm or leg muscles.

Exercise, followed by rest and good eating habits, is the key to a strong muscle and a healthy treasure chest.

Inside your chest, there is a treasure that keeps you alive.

It is your heart.

Your heart is in the middle of your chest, a little to the left. Put your hand on your chest and be very still. Can you feel your heart beating?

Your heart is actually a muscle, a very strong muscle.

To find out the size of your heart, make a fist with one hand. This is about the size of your heart.

To find it, read each food item at right and pick the one that is lowest in saturated fat. Then color the letter of that choice on the grid and discover the hidden treasure!

Foods high in saturated fat add cholesterol to your blood. Too much cholesterol can be bad for your heart. It can cause the arteries that bring blood to your heart to clog up.

Place two fingers on the inner side of your left wrist. Do you feel a little jump? This is the blood from your heart going to your hand. You can feel that jump every time your heart beats. This is called your pulse.

‘Young and Beautiful’: Finding depth is the real trick

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post It’s probably not a good sign that Isabelle, a French teenager on summer vacation, has what seems to be an out-of-body experience while losing her virginity to a cute German on the beach. The visual metaphor in Francois Ozon’s strangely dispassionate “Young and Beautiful” – in which the character appears both to watch herself being deflowered and to watch herself watching – seems less an indication of emotional detachment than the onset of serious mental illness.

The smoke has barely cleared from the candles on Isabelle’s 17th birthday cake before our dewy young heroine (Marine Vacth) finds herself back in Paris, inexplicably turning tricks after school at 300 euros a pop.

You might wonder, at 15 minutes in, whether a chunk of celluloid somehow went missing. I certainly did, until it became clear, as the movie wore on, that Ozon isn’t interested in explanations, psychological insights, lessons, judgments, diagnoses or any of the other stuff that normally preoccupies storytellers.

The filmmaker does, however, seem unusually interested in the mechanics of sex. There are lots of shots of a naked 22-year-old Vacth – who looks closer to her character’s age – engaged in various sex acts, mostly with much older men, whose predilections tend toward the sadly predictable.

Why Isabelle becomes a prostitute is the film’s enduring mystery, and no typical explanation makes sense.

She certainly doesn’t need the money.

Her mother and stepfather (Geraldine Pailhas and Frederic Pierrot) give her everything she needs. It doesn’t look like empowerment either, given the misogyny Isabelle must put up with.

Teenage rebellion? An attempt to feel grown up? Peer pressure? Addiction?

Nothing seems to fit. Even the most obvious answer – pleasure, given a masturbation scene early in the film– doesn’t correspond with the expression of sullen tedium on Isabelle’s face before, during and after every liaison.

Isabelle is a singularly unappealing character, with little that might engender sympathy. Despite being young and beautiful, as the title says, Isabelle comes across as “bad to the bone,” to quote her mother.

So what, then, is “Young and Beautiful” ultimately about?

It’s not an exploration of adolescent female sexuality. Ozon is clearly more interested in what makes Isabelle’s wrinkled clientele tick (Viagra, in one case) than he is in her. Although her relationship with one white-haired customer (Johan Leysen) is mildly touching, it’s almost entirely because

of him, not her.

After Isabelle quits, there’s a glimmer of hope that she’ll learn how to develop healthy relationships.

She even meets a nice boy (Laurent Delbecque) whom she seems, briefly, to fancy.

But Ozon has created a monster that he can’t seem to let go of. Isabelle doesn’t just frighten her mother (and us). She seems to terrify Ozon, and I’m not sure I want to know why.

• “Young and Beautiful” received one-and-a-half stars out of four. The film is unrated and contains sex, nudity and crude language. It is in French and some German with subtitles. It runs 95 minutes.

Overuse of antibiotics poses serious health threat Dear Doctor K: I’ve been hearing a lot about “antibiotic resistance.”

What does it mean?

Dear Reader: When penicillin was discovered, many people (including doctors) thought bacterial infections would become a thing of the past. Unfortunately, penicillin and other early antibiotics didn’t successfully treat all kinds of bacteria that make us sick.

Even worse, bacteria adapted to fight antibiotics. All they had to do was the thing they do best: Keep multiplying. Bacteria multiply so fast that one bacterium becomes millions in 24 hours.

When bacteria (and other cells) divide, mutations (changes in their genes) can occur. Sometimes these mutations allow the bacteria to resist antibiotics. And when they divide, they pass that antibiotic resistance on to their offspring. Now there are millions of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Let’s say that you get strep throat and your doctor prescribes penicillin. Strep throat is a sore throat caused by the bacteria called streptococci. The antibiotic (penicillin) will kill off most of the strep bacteria, but a few strep bacteria might develop resistance to penicillin, survive and multiply. They often remain alive in your throat. At first, there are not enough of them to cause trouble.

But down the road they can cause

Antibiotic resistance is a serious problem, causing millions of illnesses and more than 20,000 deaths in the United States each year. Over time, if antibiotic use doesn’t change, antibiotics will become less able to treat common infections. We may be left with no drugs in our arsenal that can kill certain bacteria.

Overuse of antibiotics is the most common cause of drug-resistant bacteria. Many people demand antibiotics to treat viral infections. But antibiotics treat only bacterial infections. Viruses cause a sore throat more often than streptococci bacteria. Therefore, if you take penicillin for every sore throat, most of the time it won’t help you. And if taking penicillin causes penicillin-resistant bacteria to grow in your body, taking it could hurt you.

In the past, doctors routinely treated ear infections, bronchitis and other infections with antibiotics. But we now know that many cases of sore throat (those not caused by strep), bronchitis,

and sinus and ear infections will get better on their own. (Though when you really have a strep throat, you need to take penicillin.)

We can all take steps to help slow the growth of antibiotic resistance – or even turn it around.

Decrease excess use of antibiotics: • Don’t demand antibiotics. If your doctor says you don’t need an antibiotic, ask what else you can do to decrease your symptoms.

• Don’t save antibiotics and start them again without specific instructions from your doctor.

• Don’t share antibiotics with your friends and family.

Prevent infections: • Wash your hands regularly (with regular, not antibacterial, soap).

• Sneeze into your elbow, not your hand.

• Stay home from work or school if you are sick.

• Stay up-to-date with your vaccinations.

She took it very hard and has been mourning him for over a month.

She keeps saying that she wishes she could die too so that she could be with her boyfriend.

At the very least, try to tell a friend, and ask her or him for help.

3. Go to a hospital.

Many emergency rooms are still open seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

4. Dial the police emergency number – usually 911.

Important • Don’t give up if you get a busy signal (especially on a hotline). Try again, and try the other options above.
