Community honors late teacher Know more

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Purple ribbons hanging throughout St. Charles stand as a tribute to T.J. Sportsman.

Parents, colleagues and friends from Munhall Elementary School in St. Charles said displaying the school colors honors Sportsman, 34, a gym teacher at the school, who died June 14 in Wisconsin after the vehicle he was driving was in a crash involving a semitrailer. Parents, colleagues and former students described Sportsman as a creative teacher who tried different methods to inspire those in his class.

Sportsman, a Sycamore resident, also was known for his fishing ability. He was heading home after winning a fishing tournament in Wisconsin when the crash took place. He played basketball and baseball while he was a student at Burlington Central High School.

He is survived by his wife, Charity, and their children, Drew, 6, and Abby, 4.

Lisa Smith said she and her husband, Matt, are close friends to the Sportsmans.

She said T.J. and Charity were godparents to her youngest daughter, Emily, and Matt and T.J. played baseball together in high school. She said both were avid hunters and fishermen. She said she was deeply affected by T.J. Sportsman’s death and helped put together a page at www. gofundme.com to help the family. By Monday afternoon,

Evans Joyce said she was sad after she received the email announcing that T.J. Sportsman had died. But then she thought of how she could help. She said the Facebook page has provided an opportunity for many to share their thoughts.

“We lost somebody very important,” she said.

Many noted that, as a gym teacher, T.J. Sportsman had seized the opportunity to get to know students over a period of years. Mary Ann

Campagna, who helped start the Facebook group, said she realized that many of the students and former students, including her children, had fond memories of him.

“What affected me the most is that my kids will remember him forever,” Campagna said.

“But his kids [might] not, because they are so young.”

Charity Sportsman said she has read the online comments and has seen the efforts to help. She said she wanted to tell the community that the family was thankful for that. She said “it’s very important to me that Drew and Abby know who their father was,” and the comments on Facebook posts, the GoFundMe page and letters she has received in the mail have shown the family tremendous support.

“My husband was a great man,” she said. “Deep down, he would always say that the world was a good place, and he wanted to be a positive light in the world. I’m so thankful for all of the tributes. It means he was that positive light.”

Fire district plans Update given on police facility cuts to spending Department could ST. CHARLES

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District board approved a tentative budget of $2.7 million Monday for the 2016 fiscal year that reflects the district’s reduced financial situation.

Board president James Gaffney said officials had planned for an operating budget of $3.2 million to $3.3 million if an April referendum had passed. But the district’s request in April was voted down.

The reduction in spending reflects having 21 firefighter/ paramedics instead of 24, officials said.

“It represents the reality of how much money we take in compared to how much money we can spend,” Gaffney said.

The spending plan will be published and on display for 30 days before the board takes a final vote to approve it at its next meeting on July 27 at Fire Station Three, 34W500

Fire district attorney Ken Shepro said the proposed budget will be available on the district’s website as well, www.frcfr.org.

Gaffney said the district would pursue another request to go on the March 15 primary ballot.

Gaffney said the district wants to establish a Citizens Advisory Committee to help support and guide the new referendum effort.

“We’ve got to get our Citizens Advisory Committee together first because we would like to be sure we bring the public in for discussion on where we’re going to go,” Gaffney said.

Those interested in serving on the committee should call the district office at 630-5843473 and provide phone and email contact information, he said.

Once the district has people interesting in serving, Gaffney said he would schedule a committee meeting so all could have a discussion on what direction the district should take.

The district serves residents in Wayne, Campton Hills and St. Charles Township.

ST. CHARLES – While some elements of the St. Charles Police Department are in fair condition, it could benefit from a series of improvements, representatives of an architectural firm said Monday.

Officials from FGM Architects gave an update of their findings from an ongoing study of the police department facility, 211 N. Riverside Ave., St. Charles, during a regular meeting of the Government Services Committee.

To address the needs, the architects will begin planning concepts and develop a budget to include in the study’s final report. The St. Charles City Council is expected to hear the final report sometime this fall.

“There’s just been a lot of wear and tear on the building,” Raegan Porter of FGM Architects said.

The police department facility actually contains seven distinct parts, including two buildings constructed prior to the 20th century and a part constructed during the 1970s, Ray Lee of FGM Architects said.

There is no central temperature control throughout the connected buildings that make up the facility, Lee said.

The St. Charles Police Department also needs 50,347 square feet of space to operate efficiently, according to the architects’ analysis, but the facility currently has only 30,304 square feet.

Train safety expert warns that anything can leak or come loose

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Hazardous materials travel through towns and cities on railroad cars, covering hundreds of miles – as do steel coils, building timbers and cars.

An accident or derailment can mean a spill of chlorine or ammonia, a loose strap can send cars or timbers tumbling off, affecting not only the railroad and environment, but the whole community, said Matthew Thompson, manager of hazardous materials for Union Pacific Railroad.

Local fire rescue agencies, including Elburn, Maple Park and North Aurora, continued their ongoing training in how to respond to accidents, leaks and derailments Monday at an event hosted by the Union Pacific Railroad.

Two sessions of the UP’s Hazardous Materials Safety Day event were held at Kaneland High School in Maple Park, where fire agencies attended.

Elburn Trustee David Gualdoni said he didn’t think it was any secret that trains going through the village often carry hazardous materials.

“It’s whether the town has a plan for evacuation, of how prepared we are to recover … in the event something did happen,” Gualdoni said.

“Anything you can think of can be on the trains. My biggest concern is that first responders are educated.”

And that was the purpose of this week’s training event, Maple Park Fire Chief Kevin Peterson said.

“It’s mainly just to get the fire department members to be aware of the hazards on the train,” Peterson said. “You always learn something new.

And it’s even more of the hazards of what they carry and learning about locomotives themselves.”

Among the information and cautions Thompson presented at the safety day event was that locomotives themselves can be hazardous as well.

“Ninety-five percent of the time, you are responding to locomotive emergencies. A medical reason for our crew or a mechanical failure,” Thompson said.

In addition to the locomotive and what hazardous materials might be transported,

there are items that have to be tied down, Thompson said.

“Anything screwed, bolted or gasketed can and eventually does leak,” Thompson said. “Things vibrate open or loose, never vibrate closed or tight.”

Union Pacific spent more than $31 billion in capital investments from 2010 and 2014, with an additional $4.2 billion

in a 2015 capital to strengthen its infrastructure, according to the company. The railroad also provides training and equipment to first responders, officials said.

Thompson also offered train safety wisdom, based on a Malay proverb: “Just because the river is quiet does not mean the crocodiles have left.”

ST. CHARLES – A 40-yearold DeKalb man remained in serious condition as of Monday afternoon after he was struck Saturday night by a car driven by a 20-year-old St. Charles man on Route 38, between Peck and Randall roads.

Guillermo Hernandez, 40, of DeKalb, was walking west at 11:04 p.m. Saturday in the middle of the road in the 3400 block of Route 38, according to police. The area is not lighted, and there is road work going on, police stated.

Hernandez was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva, then later taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where he was listed in serious condition as of Monday afternoon.

“We think he was visiting someone in St. Charles,” St. Charles Deputy Police Chief David Kintz said. “After an argument, he left the area.”

The driver, Eberto Alvarez, 20, of the 100 block of North 15th Avenue in St. Charles, was charged with driving on a suspended license, but Kintz said Alvarez faces no additional charges at this time.

Kintz said chemical testing was done, and there was no indication that Alvarez was impaired. Alvarez and the two passengers in his car were not injured.

The road was closed for three hours after the crash as members of the St. Charles Police Department and the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team investigated the crash. The crash remains under investigation, police said.

In another fundraising effort, a Munhall parent, Kerri Trejo, helped put together a lemonade stand on Saturday, with help from her daughters, Bella Saltigerald, 12, and Alyssa Trejo, 7. She said her youngest daughter noted that Kerri Trejo decided to donate the money she had been saving for a plane ticket. Alyssa wanted to help, too, but she thought she didn’t have enough in a piggy bank.

They organized the lemonade stand in hopes of raising perhaps $50. It ended up bringing in $562, Kerri Trejo said.

“He touched so many people in the community,” she said. “The kids felt so close to him. … I think they felt they were his family, too, in a way.”

Jadin Mershon, now 16 and living in Rochelle, had Sportsman as a gym teacher at Munhall. She said he would sing and dance with students.

He created a heart obstacle course. He made gym class memorable, she said, and “he wasn’t your average teacher.”

“It’s hard to put how he was into words,” Mershon said. “He was so inspiring to people. He didn’t just teach the class. … Mr. Sportsman made it fun. He was my favorite PE teacher of all.”

Kelly Sculles, principal of Munhall, said the learning community had come together to honor and reflect on “the positive memories and experiences that we’ve had.” She said T.J. Sportsman made a really strong impact on students and staff and was humble. She said he wanted students to “look at the bigger picture.”

ent-teacher organization, helped put together the ribbon-tying event last week. She said she and the PTO treasurer, Cheryl Gyland, helped get people out and about to distribute ribbons throughout St. Charles. They are to remain in place through the week, she said. She added that her daughter, Paige, helped out with the lemonade stand. She said they wanted to help.

“He was such a pillar in the community,” Jankowski said of T.J. Sportsman.

St. Charles resident Tim Ludke, 27, said he stopped by the lemonade stand. Although he went to Munhall, he didn’t know T.J. Sportsman, but after hearing about what he called “just a sad story,” he stopped to donate.

Monica Harp has twins, Isabella and Sophia, who go to Munhall. She said they have been saying it’s important to be active to “make Mr. Sportsman proud.” They also took part in the purple ribbon campaign.

“The girls were really emotional and moved, and my husband and I were, too, just to see the community come together in the face of tragedy,” Monica Harp said.

Matt Blackford, pastor of Lord of Life Lutheran Church in LaFox, officiated at the visitation on Friday and the funeral on Saturday. He said more than 1,000 people were at the visitation and as many as 250 were at the funeral. He said the visitation was scheduled to run through 8 p.m., but people were there past 10 p.m.

He said there were tears, but also laughs.

At the funeral, he said the funeral director conducted a bird-release ceremony that featured a dove.

“T.J. was a very influential person,” Blackford said. “He touched a lot of lives.”

“I believe that districts must be drawn geographically, regardless of where the existing legislator happens to live,” Oberweis said. He has proposed that redistricting be done by an independent com-

mission to “take it out of the hands of the politicians.”

Andersson pointed to a bill that would benefit public convention centers – but not private convention centers, such as Pheasant Run Resort – as a “good example of how things work in Springfield.”

He said he is fighting Senate Bill 508, which would allow for the use of state hotel tax dollars to reimburse financial incentives for public convention centers.

“The private ones deserve at least equal treatment,” Andersson said.

OBITUARIES IVANKA S. GRABAREK Born: Nov. 16, 1940 Died: June 16, 2015

Ivanka S. Grabarek, on June 16, surrounded by her family, passed peacefully into our Lords arms after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease and lung cancer.

She was born on November 16, 1940, in Slovenia Jugoslavia where her father, Radomir Stevanovich, an officer in the King’s Army, was stationed. Shortly after the Germans invaded Jugoslavia in April of 1941, her father was captured and sent to a P.O.W. camp in Germany and Ivanka and her mother, Ruzica (Popovic), moved back to Belgrade to live with her maternal grandparents until Marshall Tito imposed Communist control of Jugoslavia.

Unable for her mother to find employment in Belgrade, her mother was able to secure a position as a music teacher in Kralejo, Serbia.

Her father, unable to return to Jugoslavia after the war because he had been a Royalist Army officer, immigrated to America in 1953 and was able to bring Ivanka and her mother to the United States in 1955 after a 15 year absence.

In 1959 she met her future husband, Bill, when both were students at Lyons Township Junior College, though after almost three years of dating, then engagement, the vagaries of youth separated them, not to be reunited again until 1998 when they married.

Ivanka was a graduate of Northern Illinois University and subsequently earned two Master degrees from Loyola University. She taught Spanish at Glenbrook South for several years before being hired

Born: Nov. 19, 1948; in Aurora, IL Died: June 19, 2015; in Elburn, IL Candace A. “Candy” Harley, age 66, of Elburn, passed away Friday, June 19, 2015, at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born November 19, 1948, in Aurora, the daughter of Lawrence and Mary Ann (Moran) Stickney.

Candy worked for many years as a waitress before retiring. She found great joy in being with her family and did extensive work on their genealogy and family history.

Candy’s grandson was the light of her life and she especially loved playing outside with him. She was very grateful for a recent trip she made with her son, Mark and his family to Hawaii. Candy was also

a great bargain hunter. She was a loving mother, grandmother and sister and will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her.

Candy is survived by her sons, Steve of Maple Park and Mark of Elburn; her grandson, J.D.; her siblings, Karen (Barry) Novak of Millbrook and Tom Stickney of Houston, Texas; and many dear nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband in 1994 James; and her parents.

Interment will be held Tuesday, June 23, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Garfield Cemetery, Route 38, Campton Township, Reverend Joe Besenjak officiating.

LOCAL BRIEF Batavia summer camps to explore robotics

BATAVIA – Fox Valley Robotics and Batavia Robotics will host summer camps in July. A Lego eXplore camp is set from 9 to 11:30 a.m. July 15 to July 17.

Another camp, the Summer Robot Camp, offers first- to third-graders the chance to build and learn to program a robot to complete the new “Lunar Landing” mission. It takes place from 1:30 to 4 p.m. July 15 to July 17.

The Summer Lego Program is being offered to fourth- to eighth-graders. More dates were added this year because of its popularity, states a news release. Kids will build and

program competitive robots to perform detailed moves and complete missions from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. July 18 to July 19.

In addition, the older kids can join the Summer Metal Program, available for eighth- to 12th-graders from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. July 25 to July 26.

Kids will build and program a driver-controlled model to maneuver around a 12-by-12 playing field.

These programs and camps will take place at Alice Gustafson School, 901 Carlisle Road, Batavia.

Circus-themed event among new offerings this year

The Geneva History Museum will be open today through Saturday, offering its galleries, a train show of large scale railroading hosted by the LGB Model Railroad Club of Chicago, and a national exhibit of more than 200 Awkward Family Photos.

“It will be our first year of trolley tours,” museum Executive Director Terry Emma said. “People are curious about the town, and this gives them a 30-minute tour for $10.

The trolleys are air-conditioned and wheelchair accessible.”

The trolley tours will be offered from noon to 5 p.m. today, Wednesday and Thursday.

The museum’s exhibits will be available for $3 a person, or $2 for members and children age 10 and younger.

GENEVA – The 66th annual Swedish Days Festival opens at 10 a.m. today, kicking off a week of music, food, activities, craft show and local sales.

About 200,000 people are expected to converge on Geneva through Sunday afternoon when the festivities close, Geneva Chamber of Commerce President Jean Gaines said.

The chamber hosts the event every year.

“It depends on the weather,” Gaines said. “When the weather is great, we get big crowds. We kept the tried and true – the things people love the most – added a 1 p.m. Tuesday event for kids called Circus on Third between James and Campbell streets. It’s an interactive event by The Runaway Circus with demonstrations and learning about tightrope walking.”

Concerts on the lawn are from 3 to 5 p.m. today through Thursday, featuring various artists performing on the courthouse lawn.

Every day will feature a carnival by Windy City Amusements with evening band performances at 7 p.m., starting with 7th Heaven on the central stage.

“My mother is from Sweden, and she is here today,” Castle said. “I’ve been here four or five times. I like being in touch with my ancestry.”

Sponsored by the local chapter of the International Organization of Good Templars, Swedish Day is an alcohol-free celebration of the Scandinavian tradition of Midsommar, the longest day of the year in Sweden.

Swedish Day has been held since 1925 in Good Templar Park. Geneva also will celebrate its Swedish roots during Swedish Days, which starts Tuesday.

“I wanted it before I danced,” Castle said.

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, also was on hand for the festivities. Hultgren said he has been attending Swedish Day with his family for more than 30 years.

Attending Swedish Day also has been a longtime tradition for Dennis Eksten, 80, of Loves Park. He has strong Swedish roots, as all four of his grandparents were born in Sweden.

“It’s a wonderful festival,” Eksten said. “This is the best Swedish event in the whole state.”

Eksten’s love for Sweden was exemplified by the T-shirt he wore. Translated from Swedish to English, the shirt said, “I would rather be in Sweden.”

GENEVA – The Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva has planned a pizza booth for Swedish Days, which starts today, at the church, 102 S. Second St., Geneva.

The booth will be open every day and evening throughout the six-day festival, through Sunday.

By Gina Kraman “Clear headlights should be a top priority for every driver. When the car’s headlights become yellowed and foggy, visibility decreases by 40%.

For safe nighttime driving, it’s absolutely critical to have clean bright headlights,” says Pasquale Roppo, owner, Geneva Body Shop. He advises drivers to check their headlights for any cloudy discoloration.

The plastic covering on the car’s headlights can grow yellow and less transparent due to age, destructive weather conditions, and road salt.

While the headlight bulbs last for years without growing dim, total illumination drops when the headlights lose their transparency.

Roppo explains that car manufacturers coat the headlights with an ultra-violet protective film to prevent the sun’s rays from yellowing the headlights. However, some car models’ headlights seem to yellow more quickly. Restoring the headlights through

professional cleaning is less expensive than replacement.

According to Roppo, one new headlight assembly for a high-end Lexus may cost $1,500, while a restoration is $100.

Headlights for a handcrafted luxury Bentley may cost in the thousands, as they’re specially made to track with the tires. Roppo has never restored a headlight in a Bentley, which costs about $300,000, since, “Manufacturers of such high-end cars always use the best materials that are more expensive but weather beautifully.”

For other car owners, a headlight restoration typically takes less than two days to complete. Roppo explains how his shop removes the headlight, cleans, then buffs the cover to its original factory specification.

Some customers, Roppo says, also opt to replace their cars’ taillights with darker red colors. In Italy, taillights are also red, the universal color of warning and braking, but prefer orange for its blinkers.

BATAVIA – Batavia aldermen on Monday voted, 11-2, against installing a pedestrian crossing with a raised concrete median at Houston Street and North Batavia Avenue (Route 31).

New accessible sidewalk ramps, signage and a raised concrete median had been proposed for the intersection. The city had received an $80,000 federal grant for the $100,000 project.

Fifth Ward Alderman Lucy Thelin Atac and 1st Ward Alderman Michael O’Brien spoke in support of the raised median.

“This outdated intersection is not sustainable for the long-term,” she said. “Improving the intersection will help calm traffic throughout town.”

Stan Oke, the owner of Batavia Avenue Mobil gas station – at the southwest corner of the intersection – had previ-

ously told aldermen the proposed concrete median would significantly impact access to his business.

Batavia Police Chief Gary Schira had voiced concerns that putting a crosswalk at the intersection would make it more dangerous, and said he would rather have pedestrians and bicyclists cross at the signalized intersection at Wilson Street and Route 31, just south of Houston Street and Batavia Avenue.

Seventh Ward Alderman Dave Brown said he could not support the project.

“It doesn’t do any good to talk about walkability if you put businesses out of business,” Brown said.

Second Ward Alderman Alan Wolff abstained from voting on the issue.

He works for Batavia Avenue Mobil.

The Batavia Bicycle Commission had been pushing for the raised median.

John Gamble, the chairman of the Batavia Bicycle Commission, had said the concrete median would allow for a safe area for pedestrians to stand until traffic has cleared, so they can cross the street.

Costumes welcome at BotCon

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A panel discussion had barely started Saturday afternoon when the moderator noticed Brett Scott’s Transformers costume.

Brett, a 13-year-old Aurora resident, was in a head-totoe outfit for Smokescreen, a blue- and red-themed AutoBot from the popular Transformers brand. He received multiple rounds of applause for his seconds-long transformation from a robot to a car that could move around on the ground.

“I always thought that Transformers were cool,” Brett said after the panel. “I always liked cars and robots, and then I heard that [the brand] was about cars turning into robots.”

Brett and his family joined hundreds of other people at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles for BotCon 2015, the officially licensed collectors’ convention for Hasbro’s Transformers brand.

Among the many events was a panel on Transformers cosplay, or costume play. One of the panelists, Den Pratt of Red Oak, Iowa, talked about how dressing up empowers her in situations where she would otherwise be anxious and have stage fright.

Pratt said she made one of her costumes from upholstery foam and fabric.

“[A] hot glue gun is very much your friend and your worst enemy,” Pratt said, explaining that the glue is not gentle on exposed fingers.

Later on during the panel, Brett and 12 other costumed fans took center stage to show off their outfits. Brett said his outfit, which took about a month to make, included a metal frame bolted together to allow it to hinge and transform.

of Tailgate, an Autobot from the Transformers IDW comic series, took three months to create.

The suit is made of foam flooring and acrylic paint, Long said. The suit does get warm but it was constructed for breathability, she said.

Long said she dressed up to show her love for Transformers and, she admitted, for the attention and to get reactions from different people.

Panelist Razzie M. Bessai, who was dressed up as the character Sunstorm, was also candid in her explanation for wearing a costume.

“I will be absolutely honest – I do this because it’s silly and it’s fun,” said Bessai, who flew in from southern England to attend the convention.

I know what you’re thinking. Because, I thought it myself. I figured I could just put off this whole retirement thing for another year or maybe two. Then it hit me. All the things I will need to do to prepare for the big Kay Johnson decision and move – like sorting, packing and selling a home; I’ll still have to do. Only when that time comes, I’ll be another year or two older. Let’s face it, we’re not getting any younger. I looked at other places around Elburn but none of them felt like home. Racism’s effects linger

By LONNAE O’NEAL The Washington Post I didn’t want to write about race today. After columns on gun violence in inner-city Chicago; the viral McKinney, Texas, swimming pool video as a proxy for segregation; the sideshow of the formerly white, former NAACP official Rachel Dolezal, I just wanted to step back and catch my breath.

But then, so did Eric Garner.

The instinct to call a pause when events feel overwhelming is often not an option when it comes to race in this country. More precisely, that’s not how white supremacy works.

I speak explicitly of white supremacy not just because last week’s shooting at the historic Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, is being called a hate crime. Not because the alleged shooter, Dylann Storm Roof, 21, who wore flags of apartheid-era South Africa and white-minority-ruled Rhodesia, is reported to have said, “You’re taking over our country” before killing nine people at Bible study.

I speak of it because those are just iterations of something foundational and monstrously paradoxical to the ideals of America.

Because Roof and Dolezal (to a far more complex and interpersonal extreme) exist along a continuum of imbalance. Whether murderous or deluded, racial sickness is all around us.

It is a sleight of mind whose roots stretch back centuries. It’s that “thingification” of human beings that warped us, white and black alike, and echoes through all the generations and every stratum of America.

I am reminded of a central

allegory from “The Walking Dead.” In that popular zombie series, a plague of such overpowering virulence has struck the nation and everyone has been infected. Some of us are just more symptomatic.

That notion of collective illness feels like a useful frame to look at black alienation, nihilism and gun violence.

And, certainly, at white hate groups and steady rates of hate crimes.

But it is also useful in the softer, rheumy, more quietly rotten ways of the nation. It is in my inbox full of emails from whites who skip simple, intuitive truths for the mental gymnastics required to believe nothing is about race.

Ever.

A Washington Post analysis of Pew Research polling found last week that “half of American whites see no racism around them.”

Mental gymnastics. Sleight of mind. Zombies. I think you see where I’m going with this.

Robin DiAngelo, a white professor of multicultural education at Westfield State University, coined a term for it: “white fragility.”

“For white people, their identities rest on the idea of racism as about good or bad people, about moral or immoral singular acts, and if we’re good, moral people we can’t be racist – we don’t engage in those acts,” she explains.

It is an adaptation of racism that “we can think of it as only something that individuals either are or are not ‘doing.’ In large part, white fragility – the defensiveness, the fear of conflict – is rooted in this good/bad binary. If you call someone out, they think to themselves, ‘What you just said was that I am a bad person, and that is intolerable to me.’ It’s a deep challenge to the core of our identity as good, moral people.”

Northbound Kirk Road to westbound Lincoln Highway to northbound Randall Road to westbound Interstate 90. Then over the Wisconsin border and into Beloit, once the Midwest League’s headquarters and long the destination of the Cougars’ lone commuter bus trip.

As long as traffic and construction cooperate, Hartseil, the Cougars’ third-year bus driver, navigates the club’s sleek Peoria Charter vessel from Fifth Third Bank Ballpark to the Snappers’ Pohlman Field in about

90 minutes.

His refrain for the upper midwest swing mirrors that of his cleat-clad cargo, who ideally get to know many buses during their hopeful climbs to Major League Baseball.

“It’s no big deal,” Hartseil said.

“It’s only an hour and a half.”

Of course, Hartseil has a bus to steer to keep him occupied. Because Cougars players and coaches don’t have that luxury, as Hartseil would call it, they pass the miles with condensed versions of usual road trip pastimes, which isn’t always as easy as it sounds.

In this installment, we explore how players and coaches approach the team’s lone commuter bus trip each season, to Midwest League rival Beloit. to charge through E.L. James’ sultry novel “50 Shades of Grey”?

Depends on who you ask. Read: who’ll admit that was the club’s selection overlapping last month’s four-game series at Pohlman Field.

“We all are kind of interested in reading,” Keller said. “We just picked a book. Someone was talking about it.

It was, ‘All right. Let’s do it.’ “ The bus accommodates the Cougars’ electronic media set, as well, once players walk past an aesthetic exterior wrap developed by Cougars graphic designer Emmet Broderick and featuring images of fireworks, Midwest League championship trophies and logos of the Cougars and their parent club, the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Small television screens are mounted every few rows, with various plug-in options.

“Yeah, I had personal time. My girlfriend, this, that, talking. But you had a lot of downtime that you can try to handle it and use it in the right way.

And I thought I did a pretty good job of that.”

Last week, the Cougars completed their longest sojourn of the season, covering 837 miles during a six-game trip to Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Eastlake, Ohio of the MWL’s Eastern Division.

“Commuters,” as they’re colloquially known, are far more common in the league’s Western Division, in which the Cougars reside. To curtail travel, Western clubs face each Eastern counterpart for only three games per season, alternating sites each year.

A round trip to Beloit encompasses 150 miles, and there’s usually little novelty, some recent tweaks notwithstanding. Hartseil rerouted the 2014 Cougars, then a Cubs affiliate, due to

Here’s a look at the Cougars travel mileage chart, representing one-way trips from Fifth Third Bank Ballpark to each of the 15 other venues in the Midwest League:

especially infuriating construction on I-90, taking Kirk Road south to link up with interstates 88 west and 39 north, respectively. He said the switch added an hour of travel time each way.

Last month, the Cougars booked a rare overnight stay in Beloit, as the club was leaving from the first leg of its road trip in Appleton, Wisconsin, instead of Geneva. That maneuver made for three commuters instead of four but also allowed Hartseil to converse with players longer.

“The camaraderie with the men and the players, that’s what I really enjoy,” Hartseil said. “Talking to the kids and finding out about them. That’s why I do it. And of course, I love baseball. Love the game, love watching baseball. …

It’s what I really enjoy. It’s not a job, really. It’s enjoyable.”

Four years ago, Hartseil, 56, retired from an education and coaching career of about three decades. Rooted in central Illinois, he served as Blue Ridge athletic director and assisted on the Bradley softball staff, among other career stops.

When he pulls the bus into the Fifth Third Bank Ballpark lot in the wee hours after series finales in Beloit, his own commuter hardly is over. If you thought the Cougars who reside with an Oswego host family – including Curtis, Solbach and fellow pitchers Nick Baker and Steve Hathaway – had late nights, think again.

Hartseil, who lives in Morton with his family, must return the bus to Peoria, complete the requisite paperwork, then drive his own wheels home to the self-titled “Pumpkin Capital of the World.”

So long as the Cougars’ bus hasn’t turned into a round, orange, oversized gourd by the time Hartseil arrives in Peoria, sometimes as late as 3 a.m., he completes his tasks and gets to sleep.

That, by the way, is another travel pastime, made easier if your neighbor keeps it down.

Don’t nod off for too long, though.

The bus will be at the ballpark in just a few more miles.

Oakland A’s prospect Brett Vertigan climbed from the Class-A Midwest League to the Advanced-A California League last month.

The outfielder, a Beloit Snapper for 123 games in 2013 before beginning this season in Class-A, listed but one lament about Beloit’s commuter bus trip to Kane County before making the leap.

Driving back and forth from Pohlman Field to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark meant the Snappers couldn’t stay at St. Charles’ Pheasant Run Resort, what Veritgan called “one of the nicer” visitors hotels in the 16-team MWL. Apart from that, the Snappers largely mirror the laid-back approach of their Cougars counterparts when it comes to the round-trip trek.

“I mean, yeah, you sit in a bus after (the game), but you get to be home,” Vertigan said. “I kind of like it. I think it’s almost better than being in a hotel.

You get to go back and eat your own food and not have to worry about getting food after the game.”

Convenience is a theme for other proponents of commuter trips, which are especially common in the MWL’s eight-team Western Division, where four clubs reside in eastern Iowa.

“The Quad Cities is like, 45 minutes away from us. Cedar Rapids, I think, is an hour, too,” Clinton third baseman Joe DeCarlo said. “It’s not bad. It’s just when you get off the bus, you’ve got to get the body going a little bit, but that’s the easy part.”

If Burlington traveled to Cedar Rapids, Quad Cities and Clinton before turning home, the Bees’ bus would cover about 340 miles.

Bowling Green, the MWL’s lone Kentucky franchise and the southernmost team in the Eastern Division, makes just one intradivisional trip shorter than that. And that’s only factoring in mileage one way.

Western Division clubs visit each Eastern Division venue biennially.

“As long as we’re playing, it works,” Clinton outfielder Chantz Mack said.

The longest trip in the league is 600 miles, which Bowling Green and the Appleton-based Wisconsin Timber Rattlers trade each season.

For players, such data simply provides passing conversation fodder as they navigate the minor league lifestyle.

“I don’t think complaining about that stuff does you any justice when you get to play baseball for a living,” DeCarlo said. “So you can sit on a bus for 10 hours if you need to.”

“There’s movies going on. There’s games,” first baseman Marty Herum said. “It’s busy.”

Hartseil and Co. typically depart Fifth Third Bank Ballpark between 12:30 and 1 p.m. for 7 p.m. games in Beloit. Depending on game length, the team returns to Geneva between midnight and 1 a.m., then scurries home to its host families to sleep. The Cougars visit Beloit again from Aug. 24 to 26.

Players leave most of their gear at Pohlman Field during the series, lugging only themselves, a meal and any entertainment options the next day.

Before you can say “pothole,” the bus transforms into a mobile home of sorts.

“We spend a bunch of time on the bus. We’re constantly traveling, you know,” Keller said. “And then doing commuters, I mean, an hour, hour and a half every single day. We’re always together, we’re always in close proximity on the bus. I’d say it’s pretty much like the clubhouse.”

Of course, shop talk isn’t forbidden, and is especially common near the front of the bus, where manager Mark Grudzielanek often convenes with pitching coach Doug Bochtler and hitting coach Vince Harrison for impromptu meetings.

“We get a lot knocked out in those bus rides, which is really important to how the ship’s being run, you know,” Grudzielanek said. “Controlling certain things. Understanding. Nipping some things off at the bud that need to be nipped with certain individuals.

Things like that. Keeping everything in-house and going about things like that, you know what I mean. So it’s good stuff.”

Prompted to recall any commuter trips from the four-plus minor league seasons that preceded his 15-year Major League career, Grudzielanek jumped the gun and offered a joke.

How about his 2003-04 stint with the Cubs, when the club bussed together to U.S. Cellular Field for interleague games against the White Sox? Grudzielanek ultimately cited Father Time for keeping him from discussing many earlier specifics, although he assuredly traveled to Beloit and back several times in 1992, when he played shortstop for the since-relocated Rockford Expos.

For longer trips – those that would outpace even the epic, original, 238-minute running time of 1939’s “Gone With the Wind” – Grudzielanek remembers a more pensive side eventually kicking in after the inevitable fun and games.

“It’s really between the ears kind of time where you can just really meditate and think about things and understand what you did,” Grudzielanek said. “I was always running through that game previously, through my head. ‘What could I do differently?

Lack of size could turn into positive

Losing senior Chasen Peez to graduation was a tough enough obstacle for the Batavia boys basketball team to overcome.

But more than the absence of the 6-foot-7 center’s production will be a lack of height and post play for the team post-Peez.

Batavia, which finished 15-15 last season, has already seen early this summer that its guards will have a lot to say on whether the Bulldogs will be successful come November.

“We definitely lack in size,” incoming senior guard Canaan Coffey said. “But I think we can use that as an advantage and run on teams.

If we are in better shape, we can wear teams down by putting pressure on them.

We are very guard heavy, so I don’t see the lack of size as a negative, but more as an opportunity.”

Coffey was a regular starter as both a sophomore and junior and will be a very important piece to the Bulldogs’ attack this year.

Jim Nazos, who will enter his fourth season as Batavia coach in the winter, is focused on seeing his team improve each week. With a fairly new identity sure to

He was in agreement with Coffey that endurance and a fast pace of play could benefit the Bulldogs next season.

“As you would expect there have been some ups and downs, but the guys are playing well,” Nazos said.

“Canaan and [senior Kamontez Thomas] are two of our leaders and have had tremendous summers so far. We are very quick as a group. Even the big guys get up and down pretty well, so I think that will be a strong point of this team.”

Thomas, a left-handed guard, has already proven to be a big piece as well, with a

game-winning steal and buzzer-beating layup against St. Rita at the Riverside-Brookfield Shootout this summer.

Coffey spoke of how important development and getting better each day is for the team, a regular member of the Geneva Summer League. “(Thomas) has done a great job at getting better handling the ball in pressure,” Coffey said. “He’s a one-man press break and his quickness has helped his defense get so much better, too. I think improvement each and every time we are out there is so big for us and if we work hard, we will get to where we want to be” Getting better physically isn’t the only thing that figures to boost Batavia this summer.

Coffey and Thomas will take on leadership roles and make it a point that there is only one way to play the game.

“Us seniors need to make it a point to play Batavia-style basketball ... and nothing else is acceptable,” Coffey said. “When one person isn’t out there giving it his all, it affects everyone.

Batavia basketball is playing hard all the time, tough defense and having a positive attitude day in and day out.”

As most coaches do during the summer, Nazos is getting a chance to see who can do what for his team under which circumstances.

Getting to play a variety of teams has helped, as well.

Geneva coach Phil Ralston called the Vikings’

summer league “one of the best summer leagues in the state.” The Bulldogs have played in the Riverside-Brookfield shootout as well as a team camp in Wisconsin.

Nazos said there are around 28 players hoping to play varsity basketball this season, so the summer proves to be a time to work hard and put people in situations to see what they can handle.

“We have a good mix of returning players and newer guys,” Nazos said. “The group is starting to mesh together and understand how each other play. The number of guys looking to play just means there is passion here at Batavia for basketball.”

Nazos joked that he has coached long enough to know that putting together a June or July depth chart will almost certainly change in November.

John Fitch and Brett Bowman were also players that Nazos said saw some minutes last season and have shown potential to contribute for the Bulldogs.

Summer camps, shootouts and workouts can bring a number of focus points for each program, but as far as Batavia is concerned there is one thing Nazos wants to get out of it.

“Bottom line is we need to see who can play,” he said.

“Nobody has everything figured out at this time, so, right now, it’s time to go out there and show me what you’ve got and we will see what happens.”

Yager qualifies for ’16 Olympic trials in breaststroke

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Rosary student Alexis Yager qualified this weekend for the 2016 U.S. Olympic trials in Omaha, Nebraska while competing for the Academy Bullets club team in Iowa City, Iowa.

Yager, a junior from Batavia, met

the time standard in the 200-meter breaststroke, swimming 2:34.91 at the Swim Pink Invitational at the University of Iowa.

Trials qualifying standards are set between each Olympics. Yager beat the 200 breaststroke cut by eight hundredths of a second, dropping her personal record in the event by about

four seconds.

The trials are set for June 26 to July 3, 2016, and will determine the American swimming contingent for the Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, later that summer. “(Yager) saw a lot of improvement last summer and kind of dedicated herself to this is what she wanted to

do,” Bullets head coach Todd Capen said. “This was the first step.”

The 2014 Kane County Chronicle Girls Swimmer of the Year, Yager won the 200-yard individual medley title at the IHSA state meet in November with a clocking of 2:02.15.

She also was runner-up in the 100yard breaststroke at 1:04.17.

Ace spurs Johnson in steady summer ACS student from Geneva eyes breakthrough

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com Devin Johnson’s tee shot was a good one. As it got close to the hole, he wasn’t sure exactly where it was going to land.

Johnson saw a spectator’s hands fly in the air as the ball hit the bottom of the cup for the Geneva native’s first ever hole-in-one.

The shot came at the Par-3, 6th hole of an Illinois Junior Golf Association Regional at Fox Bend Golf Course in Oswego. It was one of the best shots Johnson has ever hit and helped him to a 2-over 74 and second-place finish in the tournament earlier this month.

“I really couldn’t believe it,” Johnson said.

“I was in shock and actually bogeyed the next two holes because I still didn’t believe what I did.”

The 16-year-old re- Devin Johnson cently finished his sophomore year at Aurora Christian, which included a trip to the Class 1A state tournament.

Johnson said the summer is a time to work on a lot of things in order to keep getting better, but a trip downstate this past year definitely provided some motivation.

“You try to just go out there and do your best in these tournaments,” Johnson said. “The bigger ones, you obviously try and finish higher to get more points. Making it to state gave me some momentum heading into summer and it makes me want to work that much harder to get back there next year.”

Johnson currently sits in 19th place out of 200 golfers in the IJGA Points Standings for boys ages 16-18 with 1,725.00 points. With the top 36 golfers getting an invite to the IJGA Player of the Year Championship Tournament Aug. 10 in Elgin, Johnson says he’s focused on continuing to be consistent and try to qualify for that tournament.

“It’s another goal to reach for,” Johnson said. “The second-place finish helped, and the more points you can get out of each tournament will help. So any points from here on out will help, but I just try to do my best and go out there and have fun.”

Johnson plans to compete in Friday’s tournament at Blackberry Oaks Golf Course in Bristol, as well as the IJGA Junior Amateur at Geneva’s Mill Creek Golf Club on July 8-10 and Bartlett Hills on July 23.

Geneva High School’s Spencer Monroe (1,750 points) sits just ahead of Johnson in the points standings.

SPORTS BRIEFS Toussaint traded to Braves organization

In a deal that surprised many in baseball, the Arizona Diamondbacks traded starting pitchers Bronson Arroyo and Touki Toussaint to the Atlanta Braves for infielder Phil Gosselin on Saturday.

Toussaint, 19, was the Diamondbacks’ 2014 first-round draft pick as a Florida prep star and made seven starts for the Class-A Kane County Cougars this season (2-2, 3.69 ERA). His trade came a day after the most productive start of Toussaint’s professional career, throwing six shutout innings in the Cougars’ 4-1 victory over the Peoria Chiefs Friday night.

Diamondbacks chief baseball officer Tony La Russa, who visited Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in May, told Arizona reporters the trade created financial flexibility for the D’backs.

Arroyo had about $10 million remaining on his contract, and Arizona traded it away.

Ralston said Monday’s games will be played on Wednesday, while the session-ending tournament that was originally scheduled for Wednesday will be played either Thursday or June 29 based on the availability of officials.

Ralston said he expects to know the exact date of the tournament today.

Collecting is not a new hobby - there were cavemen and even birds that saw unusual or attractive items and took them “home” to save. Ancient Romans collected coins and pottery and one Emperor had a bedroom filled with treasures from Greece. By the time of the Renaissance, there were “wonder cabinets,” and the rich and the royal had galleries to display their paintings and statuary. Collectors from every century have had problems of storage, display and inventory records.

During the 18th century, European and American collectibles like coins, mineral specimens and small pieces of pottery and glass were displayed in a large piece of wooden furniture, usually a combination bookcase and cabinet. It had both shelves and special shallow drawers, divided into small sections. A southern auction house recently sold a Federal carved mahogany piece of antique furniture with shelves in the top section, and a writing desk over specimen drawers below. Doors with panes of glass cover the upper shelves and wooden doors hide the lower section’s storage. It was made in Philadelphia in 1807. The piece is 93 inches high, so it can just fit under the average 8-foot-high ceiling if there is no carpet on the floor. Estimated at $3,000 to $5,000, it sold for $5,490. *** Q: Several years ago, I inherited a Royal Doulton jug called “The Cavalier.”

A: The Whiting View Co. of Cincinnati published a series of stereo cards called “The Twentieth Century Series” around 1901. Stereo cards were made for viewing in stereoscopes. People often confuse stereoscopes with stereopticons. Stereopticons, sometimes called magic lanterns, were first made about 1850. A stereopticon has two lenses and uses glass slides to project images. A stereoscope is a viewer for stereo cards that uses two images to produce a single three-dimensional picture. 60 last month, and I hosted a party at her house for friends and family. As things were winding down, I looked over the birthday cards from well-wishers that were displayed on a living room table. Among them was a big, gorgeous card from “Cassie,” a woman who I always thought was an acquaintance.

As I read the message she had written inside, my jaw dropped.

While not pornographic, her message made clear that she and Mom have an intimate physical relationship.

I have not discussed the card with Mom, but I suspect she knows I saw it. I don’t have anything against gays; I believe they are entitled to a love life just like the rest of us. But in this case, I can’t help but feel betrayed. Mom was married to Dad for 32 years, bore him three children and seemed happy. Was this all a lie?

Take steps to slow progress of heart failure Dear Doctor K: I’ve been diagnosed with heart failure. Thankfully, it is still in the early stages.

What can I do to keep it from getting worse?

Dear Reader: The function of the blood is to carry nutrition to every cell in the body and to carry away waste from the cells. The function of the heart is to keep pumping blood so that the blood reaches every cell in the body.

Heart failure is a condition in which the heart cannot pump efficiently enough to meet the body’s need for blood.

As a result, tissues and organs don’t get enough nutrition, and fluid builds up in the lungs and tissues.

The first symptom of heart failure often is fatigue. As the condition progresses, a person may also experience rapid heartbeat, worsening shortness of breath (caused by fluid buildup in the lungs) and fluid buildup in the legs and abdomen.

Fortunately, you can help slow the progress of heart failure, avoid hospitalizations and improve your quality of life: • Take your medicines. Most people with heart failure need a threedrug regimen, including diuretics (pills to make you pass water).

• Step on a scale regularly. Extra fluid in your body means extra weight. If, because of heart failure, your body is retaining fluid, you can gain several pounds a day without adding any fat. So check with your doctor on how often you should step on a scale, and when you should call him or her if you gain weight.

• Change your diet. Limit your sodium intake to two grams a day. The main source of sodium in our diet is salt, which tends to hold fluid in your body. So avoid salty foods and adding salt to your foods. You can buy a potassium salt to sprinkle on food that accents the taste but doesn’t add sodium to your body. Also limit your intake of fluids to about two quarts per day. Closely monitoring sodium and fluids may allow you to lower your dose of diuretic medicine.

• Listen to your body. Call your doctor right away if you notice

any new or strange symptoms.

Rapid heartbeat, dizzy spells, fainting, worsening shortness of breath or sudden changes in your weight all may be signs that your heart failure is getting worse.

• Pay attention to other medical conditions. Make sure your blood pressure is under control, for example. High blood pressure can set off a downward spiral with heart failure.

• Exercise regularly. For people with heart failure, regular aerobic exercise should be a high priority for two reasons. First, it strengthens your heart so that blood and oxygen move around your body more efficiently.

Second, exercise can serve as an early warning system. Say you are suddenly short of breath doing something you were able to do easily last week: You’ll know to call your doctor.

• Lose weight if you are overweight.

Cutting out 500 calories a day can lead to slow, steady weight loss.

Teens jealous of youngest sister Dr. Wallace: I’m 19 and live at home with my sisters, ages 17 and 15. My 17-year-old sister and I are upset that our parents allow our 15-year-old sister to date, because we weren’t allowed to when we were her age. When we confronted them about this, they admitted we were not allowed to date at her age. We also told them about other things our younger sister is allowed to do that we couldn’t do when we were her age.

We don’t think this is fair. Do you? – Sisters, Moline Dear Sisters: Surely the two of you have better things to do than to be jealous of your little sister! Give it a rest and focus on your own lives. Or, better yet, take sis under your wing and give her advice about boys, now that she’s dating. She will probably appreciate your friendly concern.

Here’s what you and your middle sister do not yet understand: Parenting is a learning process.

Younger siblings are often given more latitude than the older ones because Mom and Dad have learned to relax in their roles by then. It’s not unfair, it’s just life.

Be happy for your younger sister, but most of all, be her friend. It’s so much more pleasant and healthy than nursing your jealousy of her.

Dr. Wallace: Our daughter is currently enrolled in the pre-international baccalaureate program at her high school. The key focus of the program is to broaden students’ international awareness, to develop the individual talents of young people and to teach them to relate the experience of the classroom to the realities of the outside world.

She willingly applied. But she has now changed her mind for several reasons, mainly because her friends are not in it.

Besides that, a new high school is being built in our area and is set to open in August. My daughter would not attend the new school with her friends because her program will continue at the old high school that she now attends.

In discussing the matter, my daughter raised an important question I’m hoping you can answer. What is the difference between graduating from high school as an honors student with straight As and graduating from the advanced program with a B average? – Florida Mother Florida Mother: The pre-international baccalaureate program seems to be a very valuable opportunity, but in this case, I would encourage you to allow your daughter to remain with her friends in the normal program and to be part of opening a new school.

To flourish in the advanced program, your daughter must want to be in it and spend the extra time necessary to gain all the benefits of it.

An honors student with an A average should be able to select a college of her choice.

That is bad advice for bridge players. We must aim at success – the number of tricks we need to make or break a contract. That is our target.

In this deal, West is defending against four spades. He leads the diamond king. South takes that trick and cashes two of dummy’s heart winners to shed his diamond loser. Then declarer runs the spade eight. How should West defend?

After South opened with a weak two-bid, promising some 6-10 highcard points and a decent six-card suit, North used the two-no-trump artificial inquiry. Since South had a maximum, he rebid three diamonds to show his “feature” (typically the ace or king) in that suit. West doubled to assure a diamond lead should North become the declarer.

West can see only two certain defensive tricks: his aces. If South had started with three diamonds, he would have taken another pitch on one of dummy’s hearts.

So, declarer is marked with 6-12-4 distribution. And the bidding has made it clear that East, not South, holds the club king.

West should win the first trump trick and shift to his club three, low showing interest in the suit. East wins with his king and returns his club six.

West takes that trick, then gives his partner a club ruff to defeat the contract. Happiness!
