OUT AND ABOUT Sugar Grove Corn Boil cooking challenge set SUGAR GROVE – The Sugar Grove Corn Boil will hold its cooking challenge at 11 a.m. July 26 at the multipurpose room of the John Shields Elementary School, 85 S. Main St., Sugar Grove.

The contest is open to any type of food recipe, whether it is an original or has been passed on for years. Three entry categories are light affair, main affair and baked affair.

An entry form must be completely filled out and received by July 26.

It can be mailed to Sugar Grove Corn Boil, Attn. Events Committee, PO Box 225, Sugar Grove, IL 60554, or entrants may bring it with them to the cooking challenge.

Judging will begin by 11:45 a.m.

Winners will receive first-, second- and third-place awards in each category they will be featured on the Corn Boil website.

Garage sale to benefit homeless pets NORTH AURORA – The Great Annual Rover Rescue Garage Sale will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 1 and 2 at 326 Sharon Lane in North Aurora.

Held by Rover Rescue, a local nonprofit, all-volunteer group, this fundraiser helps provide medical care for homeless dogs and puppies rescued from high-kill shelters.

All of the merchandise is donated – and donations are being accepted now.

The group is looking for contributions of household goods, tools, sports equipment, kitchen utensils, glassware, toys, baby furniture, baskets, holiday decorations, small appliances and paperbacks, as well as clothing and other items.

Because of space limitations, however, upholstered furniture or large appliances cannot be accepted.

Colonial Cafe to celebrate 55 years ST. CHARLES – Colonial Cafe’s location in east St. Charles is celebrating 55 years with special events in June. Geneva becomes all things Swedish

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Karen Pedersen had heard about the traditional Swedish dish of lutfisk for years, but she had never tried it before Saturday.

Pedersen finally got her first taste of the dried cod dish during her first trip to the Swedish Days Festival in Geneva with her husband, Harold.

“I didn’t think I would like it, but it tasted good,” said Pedersen, an Addison resident.

The Pedersens were among the many groups of people who came to experience the Sweden Väst on Saturday and Sunday during the festival.

The event was held under a large white tent on Fourth Street between State and Hamilton streets in downtown Geneva.

Sweden Väst, which features art, food, live music and dancing, became a part of the festival in 2012, said Laura Rush, Geneva Chamber of Commerce spokeswoman.

“We did this to bring the Swedish back to Swedish Days,” Rush said.

Saturday marked the Waldos’ return to Swedish Days after a few years hiatus.

“I think they’ve added more things that are traditionally Swedish,” said Adam Waldo,

Ingrid Rowlett was serving lutfisk in a traditional Swedish costume from the Östergötland province in Southern Sweden.

Rowlett is the owner and president of I.B. Quality Cabinets in Geneva.

Rowlett’s sister had a handmade display case under the tent that included wood carvings, Swedish Christmas decorations and krona, the currency of Sweden.

“I think a lot of people come to enjoy the Swedish traditions,” Rowlett said.

GENEVA – The only thing more abundant than Shriners in Sunday’s Swedish Days Parade in Geneva were the smiles of onlookers who lined the streets at the capper event of the six-day festival.

Whether they were dance teams, horses, Dixieland and marching bands, bagpipers and Shriners – in little cars, carts, horses, fire trucks and motorcycles, fez tassels flying – all brought cheers, claps and waves.

“I like everything about the parade,” said Beverly De Martini, 86, a Geneva resident.

“My two daughters – Diane Coughlin and Carol De Martini Smith – were in it. They carried the ‘Valkommen’ sign and they carry the ‘See you next year’ sign.”

Valkommen is Swedish for “welcome.”

De Martini said she always has been a big fan of the Swedish Days parade.

“I love the bands,” De Martini said. “I love the Boy Scouts, I love the [Jesse White] Tumblers. I love the children.

I love everybody. I love the patriotic theme, of course. I can’t say enough for Geneva.”

For several onlookers, the

annual parade in the sunny 86-degree June warmth was also a clear a sign of summer after a particularly harsh winter.

Rick and Debbie Keith of St. Charles, who used to live in Geneva, said they come back every year for the festival and the parade since 1990.

“I like the Wacky Wheels guy, the Second Time Around Band,” Debbie Keith said. “I just like the fact that it’s so Americana, and it makes summer feel like it’s here – finally – it’s summer. I love it.”

But Wagner said he was having a good time seeing all of it.

“It’s small-town America at its best,” Wagner said. “This is what you do on a Sunday afternoon. We finally have summer.”

For many, the parade was something they never get tired of.

By JAKE BARTELSON jbartelson@shawmedia.com GENEVA – While most people flock to Swedish Days for food, outdoor shopping and enjoying the weather, others converge on the outdoor basketball courts to participate in the 3-on-3 basketball tournaments for kids and adults.

Some do it for the fun and competition, while others use it to keep in shape and start preparing for the basketball season. Others like Geneva resident K.J. Santos.

Santos, a 6-foot-7 combo guard, is preparing to begin his junior season at South Kent School in Connecticut after he has reclassified his graduation year to 2016. Santos spent last season at Vermont Academy, after spending his first two years at Geneva, where older sisters Ashley and Sydney starred.

Santos cited getting his body ready for his eventual college basketball career and improving his grades as the reasoning behind his transfer.

“The [New England Preparatory School Athletic Council] is the best prep basketball league in the country,” Santos said. “I thought it would be good for me to play the best compe-

It just wasn’t the way they were originally thinking.

The initial plan called for the tandem to piggyback against Cedar Rapids, but a rainout reduced them to a brief round of catch as fans in the right field party deck looked on.

Johnson, rehabbing from hamstring and calf injuries after landing on the disabled list with Double-A Tennessee last month, opened 2013 with the Cougars. He earned a midseason promotion to Advanced-A Daytona and helped the club to a Florida State League title.

The parent Cubs plan to re-evaluate him after a few starts. He will be limited to four innings in his first outing.

“Pierce moved pretty

quick, and I think he’s happy with where he’s at right now and he feels like he’s going to start building and progressing,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said. “It’s just sometimes, you’ve got to reset.”

Go where they tell them: The Cougars and Kernels were set to make up Saturday’s game with a doubleheader of two seven-inning games beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Barring a potential postseason meeting, this marks the Kernels’ final visit to Kane County in 2014. Cedar Rapids’ only other series at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark came a week before the All-Star break, when the Cougars won 2 of 3 from June 7 to 9.

“It’s been kind of a goofy schedule all the way around this year,” Kernels manager Jake Mauer said. “It seems like we don’t play teams for like, six weeks, then play them two or three times in a two-week period. I don’t know if that’s just how it laid out this year,

but we like coming here. They always do a nice job here. The service is good, and a good atmosphere here, so it’s always fun to come here.”

Safe at home: Left-hander Michael Heesch rejoined the Cougars from extended spring training May 24, but the Prairie Ridge alum and one-time Bartlett resident still hooked up with a host family.

It’s nothing personal on the part of his parents, Fred and Terrie. They simply retired to Florida in the offseason.

Heesch enjoyed literal and figurative home cooking with the Cougars in 2013, staying at the family’s then-Bartlett home while going 3-9 with a 3.78 ERA in 22 games and 20 starts. He has made six relief appearances this season, compiling a 3.86 ERA while striking out 13 in 9⅓ innings.

Heesch’s parents recently arrived for a monthlong visit.

“I’m like, ‘Go home. Enjoy your retirement,’ ” Heesch grinned.

One of the toughest card-play concepts for less experienced players is the “danger hand.” This occurs when declarer must do his utmost to keep one particular opponent off the lead.

Today’s deal, it will not surprise you to learn, is a textbook example.

South is in three no-trump.

West leads the diamond six: five, two (lowest from three worthless cards), jack. How should South continue?

Note North’s two-heart rebid.

With two low diamonds, it is preferable to raise hearts with only three than to rebid one no-trump.

Then South carefully jumps to three no-trump, not four hearts, asking his partner to choose between those two game contracts.

South starts with seven top tricks: three spades, one heart, one diamond (from the first trick) and two clubs. The extra winners can obviously come from the club suit. But through which opponent should declarer finesse?

The first trick makes it clear that West has the diamond queen and ace. If East had either of those cards, he would have played it at trick one – third hand high. So, if East gains the lead, he will return a diamond straight through South’s king 10, and West will cash several tricks in the suit. But if West is on lead, South still has a diamond stopper. East is the danger hand.

However, declarer still has to be careful. He should cross to dummy with a spade, then run the club 10. When that finesse wins, South plays a club to his jack, cashes the club king, returns to dummy with a spade, takes the club ace and club eight, and ends with an overtrick.
