Celebrating Chronicle subscribers Kane County Chronicle subscribers who also are fans of Kane County Cougars baseball are invited to take advantage of a special offer.

The Chronicle is hosting a subscriber night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva on Thursday, when the Cougars will face the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

Game time is 6:30 p.m.

One longtime subscriber who plans to attend the game is Lee Richardson of Geneva.

Lee has been a subscriber of the Chronicle for about 25 years and said it’s his favorite newspaper. Recently retired, he likes reading the Chronicle for a variety of

Another Chronicle subscriber who has tickets for Thursday’s game is Dave Klussendorf of Batavia.

“Cougars are just an exciting night out,” he said. “The baseball entertainment and so on, the between-innings

ENEVA – Crowds continued to jam the sidewalks, shops and events at Geneva’s 65th Swedish Days, and Kids’ Day on Friday meant there were hundreds of children and lots of activities.

“It’s very crowded, and there’s lots of kids having a great time,” said festival volunteer Eileen Hutchinson of Geneva.

Children and parents lined up for everything from face painting to basketball to a chance to throw a ball at the dunk tank. And that is where Pat Shanahan of Geneva waited, in line with his daughter, Kathleen, 7, so she could hit the target and cause a dunking.

“We come down every year,” Shanahan said. “The kids love it, and we hang out and let them do their thing.”

Jeannine McConnell of Geneva said she also enjoyed the children’s events. She was at the festival with her daughter, Lily, 7, and grandparents, Linda and Eugene Szafoni of Downers Grove.

“Today is Kids’ Day, so they had all the kids performing,” McConnell said.

A Geneva Angel, Lily performed a cheer routine.

“That’s fun,” McConnell said. “We like the shopping.

We haven’t done that yet – we’re headed for the Little Traveler. We have not had the food yet. We try to hit the cupcake place, The Latest Crave.”

The festival continues throughout the weekend, and McConnell said the next best part of the festival is the parade on Sunday.

Weather can play a role in how successful the sixday Swedish Days festival is. It is hosted by the Geneva Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the city and sponsors.

Chamber officials said rain is bad, but people will come out in the heat. With some stormy nights this week, some evening band performances were canceled, officials said.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A Warrenville man is charged with four counts of burglary at four St. Charles businesses, police said.

A burglary arrest warrant was issued Thursday for Anthony R. Ledesma, 29, of the 30W100 block of Foxboro Court, police said.

Ledesma was in custody Friday in DuPage County on nine counts of felony burglary and one count of felony theft, officials said.

According to DuPage County Jail records, Ledesma was arrested Monday and was held on $30,000 bond.

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office set bond for Ledesma at $100,000, with 10 percent to apply for release.

Three of the burglary charges against Ledesma stem from rooftop burglaries on Sept. 18, 2013, at Foxfield CleanAnthony R. ers, 2778 E. Main Ledesma St., DeGeo’s Burgers and Gyros, 2704 E. Main St., and Subway, 2708 E. Main St., police said.

The fourth charge stems from a March 19 burglary at El Diamante Hand Carwash, 606 First St., police said.

8 Warrenville man accused

Two weeks ago thousands of people flocked to St. Charles’ annual extravaganza, City of St. Charles RiverFest.

Dragon boats, water skiers, sand sculptors and even racing pigs were among the diverse attractions that drew crowds out in celebration of the town’s most notable natural feature: the Fox River.

Interestingly, though, when some of the Fox River’s most plenteous residents showed up, not a single person opened their arms to welcome them.

Unless you call waving and swatting “open arms.”

That’s right, the River Bugs are back. Those little brown bugs that emerge periodically from the depths of the Fox arrived en masse a couple weeks ago, fluttering about downtown St. Charles as well several other communities up and down the watershed.

Small and fuzzy looking, with a tendency to fly toward and into places people find bothersome – namely noses and mouths – River Bugs actually are a symbol of what RiverFest is all about: a thriving ecosystem without which none of us could survive.

River Bugs are caddisflies, the insects that make up the order Trichoptera, or “hairy wings.” North America is home to more than 1,300 species of caddisflies, a fact that may come as a surprise to casual river observers but not the legions of fly fishermen who go to great lengths to create lures that replicate the intricacies of the caddis form.

As these sportsmen will confirm, caddisflies are key members of aquatic food chains, feeding fish and other life forms in stream systems around the world. But their allure extends above the water’s surface, too. Purple martins, swallows (barn, cliff, bank, tree and rough-winged, to name a few), chimney swifts and night hawks are a few of the birds that partake of summer’s periodic caddisfly feasts. name a few) as well as hundreds of species of spiders and other predacious arthropods come flying, scurrying and scuttling in to take advantage of the caddisfly gravy train.

Take away caddisflies, and the whole system would come tumbling down. No more firstrate smallmouth bass fishing, or any fishing for that matter, without this key food source.

No more fertile streambeds, because the niche of herbivorous scavenger would suddenly be vacated. No more clean water because of the die-off of plants and animals. And without clean water, it’s only a matter of time before there’s no more ... us.

No doubt, caddisflies are an essential part of life. But what exactly is a caddisfly anyway?

Caddisflies get their common name from the Middle English word caddice, which means a woolen braid, ribbon, or tape. Way back when, caddice men used to displays these wares by pinning them

on their coats – much the same way adult caddisflies perch on clothing and other vertical surfaces.

Even though they are by nature aquatic, caddisflies are close relatives of the Lepidopterans, or scaly wings – the critters most people refer to as butterflies and moths.

Both orders of insects have a larval phase in their life cycle, and both types of larvae pupate and emerge as winged adults. However, young caddisflies pass the days of their youth in the water, not on land.

The caddisflies that appeared here recently came up out of the Fox River as part of a synchronous “hatch,” or emergence. Millions of newly minted adults came from the water within days of each other, ready to complete the last – and shortest – phase of a life cycle that began about a year ago.

Back then, mated females laid eggs in the water that

soon hatched into larvae.

Over the ensuing months, the young insects grew through four immature stages called instars. Wriggly and green, they looked very much like caterpillars as they clung to submerged rocks and logs and fed on leaf litter and vegetation.

About a month ago, the little larvae spun small silken cocoons – similar to those of their land-dwelling cousins, but underwater – and began their magical transformation from wiggly youngsters into winged adults. Complex cues then prompted them to emerge all at once, a strategy that not only aids survival of the species (predators can eat some, or most, but never all of a synchronous emergence) but also makes it pretty easy to find a mate.

Even with an abundance of options, though, adult caddisflies should best resort to speed dating. At this point, they’ve got maybe 10 days to

two weeks left – just enough time to get down to business and reproduce. As the last adults of this emergence fade away, the new larvae of the next generation will be starting appear, and the cycle will begin again.

This most recent emergence looked to be a type of Hydropsychid caddis, a group whose larvae build “retreats” by gluing bits of sand and plant material onto the sides of underwater rocks. The “glue,” so to speak, actually is a sticky silk produced by glands near the mouth. The larvae then spin “nets” of silk in the water to capture food as it flows past.

That in itself is a pretty nifty trick. But caddis species in other families take it one step further. These more mobile larvae glue bits of plants, twigs, or pebbles and sand together to produce a tube-like case that they carry around with them.

Caddisflies’ fascinating ways have inspired many who have observed them. Poets pen verses about them; artists create sculptures based on caddis larvae cases. And at least one enterprising entomologist/jeweler has gone into business. Wildscape Inc. (www.wildscape.com) sells earrings, necklaces, bracelets and the like featuring caddis cases made from precious stones.

We’ll likely have more caddisfly emergences before the summer is over. If you’re looking for a little inspiration yourself, head down to the river on the warm summer night and watch for clouds of brown insects around the street lights.

Watch for me, too. I’ll be the one wearing the caddis-case earrings.

Local high school students have the opportunity to compete for thousands of dollars in scholarships and a trip to Washington, D.C. Students begin by competing at the local VFW Post level. Post-level winners will advance to the district level.

The first-place district winner will advance to the state competition. All state winners will receive a four-day trip to Washington, D.C. A total of $152,000 will be awarded to national finalists,

and the first-place winner will receive a $30,000 scholarship.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars provides more than $2 million in scholarships annually, states a press release.

Each year approximately 40,000 students participate in the competition.

Students must write an essay and record it in three to five minutes on an audio cassette tape or an audio CD. The essay must be on this year’s theme: “Why Veterans are Important to our Nation’s History and Future.”

VIVIENNE MAE REGOLE Died: June 20, 2014 ST. CHARLES – Vivienne Mae Regole 81, of St. Charles, died Friday, June 20, 2014, in her home peacefully, with her family at her side. Her parents were Henry and Beulah Thielking of West Chicago.

She is survived by her husband, Edward N. Regole; brother Donald Thielking (Virginia); daughters Judy Bobo (Charlie) and Elizabeth Weyer (Tim); son David Loerzel (MaryLou); stepsons Mark Regole and Greg Regole; and grandchildren, Michelle, Raquel, Joseph Loerzel, Ben, Will Weyer and Kyle Regole.

She was preceded in death by two children, Janis Gauger and Scott Loerzel.

Vivienne was born to a German immigrant father and a mother

who was a Sunday school teacher in Chicago, and moved to West Chicago when she was 10 years old. Her parents began High Lake Poultry and Kings Drive Inn Broasted Chicken on Roosevelt and Kress Roads, where she worked for many years. She attended West Chicago High School and graduated in 1950. Viv enjoyed traveling and going on cruises with her husband, Ed. She was an accomplished knitter. Viv’s great witty sense of humor will be greatly missed.

The visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 27, at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 E. Main St., St. Charles. Funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 28, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Geneva. Following interment, a gathering to celebrate Vivienne’s life will be held at St. John Neumann Catholic Church.

Newhouse retiring from Batavia United Methodist Retirement party set for Sunday at Peg Bond Center

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – After 41 years in the ministry, Batavia United Methodist Church Pastor David Newhouse is getting ready to retire.

Parishioners as well as community members will have the chance to wish him well during a retirement celebration from noon to 3 p.m.

Sunday at the Peg Bond Center on the Batavia Riverwalk, which is at Houston Street and North Island Avenue. He will

leave the church at the end of June.

“It’s time,” Newhouse said.

“There’s been a lot going on with this church in the last two years, and it’s helped me realize that maybe my transitioning would help them to take off in a new, good period of time in their history, and I wanted to David help that to hap- Newhouse pen.”

Newhouse, 60, who began serving churches in 1973 as a sophomore in college, started at Batavia United Methodist Church in 2012 after the departure of the Rev. Michael Stoner, who had been at the church for 17 years.

Stoner now is lead pastor at Trinity United Methodist Church in Yorkville.

Dan Van Haften, who has been a member of Batavia United Methodist Church for more than 20 years and is the chairman of the church’s staff-parish relations committee, believes that Newhouse has been “very good for us during this transition.”

Van Haften said he will miss Newhouse’s sermons.

“I did enjoy his sermons,” he said. “I think they were very theologically sound.”

On July 1, the Rev. Cynthia Anderson will become the new senior pastor at the church.

She is currently the associate pastor at the Barrington United Methodist Church.

Newhouse said he thinks

she will be a good fit for the church.

“I think she’ll give exactly the kind of leadership that is going to be needed for this congregation to move forward,” he said. “I think she will be a community leader as well.”

During his time at Batavia United Methodist Church, Newhouse oversaw the establishment of a second campus, Flowing Grace, in Aurora.

Earlier this month, Flowing Grace became its own congregation.

“One of my responsibilities was to help them put themselves together to be an independent church,” Newhouse said. “They have now been chartered as a new United Methodist church.”

Newhouse said he will miss the ministry.

“I’m clearly going to miss the constant opportunity to be offering pastoral care, to respond to people in their times of need and to offer them spiritual help, spiritual guidance,” Newhouse said.

He won’t be totally retiring from the ministry, however.

Newhouse will be moving to Michigan, where his daughter and son-in-law are United Methodist ministers.

“They have been encouraging me not to just sit some place and rot, but to come and be a part of the church that they’re serving, so I know I will have the opportunity to respond to people’s needs and to give some leadership,” Newhouse said.

“We are certainly going to continue to work to pass legislation on this topic,” said Elissa Bassler, CEO of the Illinois Public Health Institute, the convening organization of the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity. The bill was introduced with the support of the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity.

Bassler on Friday said her group plans to continue to educate lawmakers and others about the need for the Healthy Eating Active Living Act. Proponents contend the increased purchase price for sugary beverages would reduce consumption by about 23 percent in the first year of implementation.

Schmitz, R-Batavia, had voiced opposition to the tax.

He said education was a more effective way of curbing obesity. State Rep. Mike Fortner, R-West Chicago, who also opposed the bill, said he didn’t think that increasing the price of sugar-sweetened beverages necessarily would stop people from buying them.

According to the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity, one in three children in the state are overweight or obese and nearly one in 12 Illinoisans have been diagnosed with diabetes.

Half of the revenue generated by the tax would have gone into a wellness fund to support initiatives that promote such things as physical activity, school health and wellness, access to healthy foods and obesity prevention. The other half of the funds would support the state’s Medicaid program.

By JESSI HAISH jhaish@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Mediterranean cuisine may be out, but Italian food and locally produced wine is in store for downtown Sycamore.

Acquaviva Winery will expand its reach when it opens a restaurant in the city in July.

Acquaviva, which is known for Italian food and specialty wines in Maple Park, will be located in the former Taki’s Mediterranean Restaurant at 219 W. State St. Owner Vito Brandonisio said the facility will feature fine dining with a small bar and wine tasting, but will mostly focus on dining. The Italian food offered will be the same menu as its Maple Park location, including pizza, pasta, seafood and more.

Brandonisio said Acquaviva regularly wins awards for its wines, which are made at its Maple Park location, a 40acre vineyard and winery at the corner of Meredith Road and Route 38.

Brandonisio has owned the Maple Park location for four years, and the facility produces about 55,000 bottles of wine a year. The location also has a restaurant. Brandonisio also has a tasting and wine bar in St. Charles.

Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy on Thursday approved a liquor license to the operators of Acquaviva Winery for the new restaurant they plan to open.

Brandonisio said he looks forward to having a location in Sycamore.

“The growth of [Acquaviva] has been tremendous,” Brandonisio said. “We hope to expedite that.”

Brandonisio’s grandfather started a vineyard in Acquaviva delle Fonti, located in southern Italy. Brandonisio visited frequently as a child and later opened his Maple Park location to fulfill a dream of owning his own vineyard, according to Acquaviva’s website.

He said now that the Sycamore license has been approved, he hopes to open in July.

He will transplant a manager from one of his other locations to the Sycamore location.

Mundy, who as the city’s liquor commissioner reviews liquor license requests, said he looked forward to having the restaurant downtown.

“We certainly appreciate the investment by the company in our town,” Mundy said. “(Brandonisio) is confident that he will have a place that is attractive and welcoming to visitors.”

Residents soon can register to vote online GENEVA – Kane County residents soon will be able to visit the State Board of Elections website and register to vote online.

Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham issued a news release Friday, informing that the state has implemented a new law regarding paperless online voter application, or online voter registration.

The new law takes effect July 1. The State Board of Elections will route the online voter applications to the county clerk’s office for processing and confirming the applicants are qualified to vote in Kane

County, the release said.

Kane County residents can visit the Illinois State Board of Elections Online Voter Application website, https://ova. elections.il.gov, to register to vote.

would qualify to be treated with medical cannabis. The details are still being determined, including where patients would be able to receive marijuana and where cultivation centers would be located.

While supporters might be eager to see the rules set in place and dispensation to

begin, it’s important to note that the rules do not allow for the general legalization of marijuana.

The Illinois Department of Public Health spells out specific “debilitating medical conditions” that would qualify individuals to be treated with medical marijuana.

Among them are cancer, glaucoma, Alzheimer’s disease, muscular dystrophy and traumatic brain injury.

This is not a green light for casual use of the drug, and those who will be able to use cannabis must be careful to avoid activities that could be dangerous if performed while under the

influence.

In creating the regulations, governing bodies must consider places that would or would not be appropriate to serve as dispensation and cultivation sites.

Steps must be taken to be certain that use is restricted to the eligible medical conditions.

I say it’s about time we just put them on a big bus and send them back and tell Mexico or whoever, however they’re crossing the border, whichever border they’re crossing, send them back there and tell [that country] ... to take care of them.

Well-played, Mauer Kernels manager Jake Mauer could relate to the buzz surrounding Schwarber’s arrival Thursday.

He is four years the senior of brother Joe Mauer, the Minnesota Twins’ first baseman and a six-time All-Star.

The Twins drafted Mauer No. 1 overall in 2001 as a St. Paul, Minnesota multisport prep star.

Mauer also had a scholarship to Florida State in hand before signing near the end of the period.

“Joe had his bags packed, ready to go to Florida State. It came down to one of the last days that they finally got everything all buttoned up,” Jake Mauer said.

“He was kind of ready to go play football and play baseball down there and it all worked out. And I think it all worked out for the best.”

The Mauers played together for two seasons, at Rookie League Elizabethton and Class-A Quad Cities.

We have liftoff Cubs first round draft pick Kyle Schwarber launched his first home run as a Cougar leading off the fifth.

He greeted Kernels reliever Chris Mazza by smacking a 2-0, outer-half fastball over the batter’s eye in center field.

“I hit that ball pretty good,” Schwarber said. “I think that’s like the ball I hit [Thursday], except the wind was blowing in then.”

Schwarber, who started at catcher, was referring to his flyout to the warning track in center in his first at-bat Thursday.

It marked one of the rare outs in his young pro career. With two more hits Friday, he’s a combined 15 for 26 (.577) with five home runs and 12 RBIs in seven games between the Cougars and Short-A Boise.

“It’s a high-level approach,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said. “It’s great to have that kind of guy in the middle of the lineup to kind of have other guys look at in how his taking his ABs.”

Here we go again Old, new faces help Cougars to another home win

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Infielder David Bote and right-hander Pierce Johnson played baseball at the same high school in suburban Denver.

This may be reunion season, but the former Faith Christian Academy Eagles already had theirs as Cougars teammates for parts of 2013.

Both players converged on Fifth Third Bank Ballpark with separate agendas Friday, but being together again at least proved one thing: The more things change amid this recent flurry of Cubs organizational roster moves, the more things stay the same.

“A lot of action this past week,” manager Mark Johnson said. “Part of it. They come in bunches sometimes.”

Boy, can Bote attest. He flew back to join the club Friday from Short-A Boise nine days after leaving the Cougars.

Bote landed in Chicago about

90 minutes before first pitch of an eventual 6-4 victory against Cedar Rapids.

Pierce Johnson’s sojourn lasted much longer. A supplemental first-round pick in 2012, Johnson is set to start tonight’s game against the Kernels as he works back from a left calf strain. It will mark his first outing in Geneva since his midseason promotion to Advanced-A Daytona last June after going 5-5 with a 3.10 ERA in 13 starts.

Johnson opened 2014 at Double-A Tennessee in April – hamstring troubles kept him at extended spring training – and was 1-1 with a 4.39 ERA in six games and five starts before landing on the disabled list about a month ago. He will be limited to four innings today before being re-evaluated after three or four starts.

Johnson caught a series of ceremonial first pitches before the game Friday, completing his transition. He also comes armed with sound perspective after pitching at three levels in

the past year.

“There’s just more threats in the lineup, maybe a little more power, too, in [Advanced]-A. And just maybe a little bit older guys and better approach,” Johnson said. “But for the most part, the competition’s fairly close. But I think the biggest jump is from [Advanced]-A to Double-A. That’s what everybody says. But it’s going to be fun to throw. I’m excited.”

Elation swirled about a number of other pockets of the clubhouse before and after the game. That’s been common for a club that’s 30-7 at home as part of a Midwest League-best 47-25 start.

The 2013 Cougars won 55 games all season.

Cubs first-round draft pick Kyle Schwarber added a jolt to an already electric group with his promotion from Boise, and went 2 for 3 with a double and a solo home run.

ST. CHARLES – For Geneva sophomore Spencer Monroe, taking first place in the boys junior division at Friday’s Illinois Junior Golf Association No. 10 Regional was pretty special – especially considering it was his first time competing at Pheasant Run Golf Course.

Monroe led the pack with a 76, while St. Charles East sophomore Michael Bertke followed closely behind with a 77 and a second-place finish.

“I played pretty well, especially with putting and chipping. It just feels good to win this event,” Monroe said. “I expected to shoot a lot worse, but after six or seven holes, I realized I was playing pretty well and I had a chance at winning this.”

Monroe started the day on the right foot with a birdie, but followed it up with a double bogey on the next hole. That wouldn’t slow him down, as he finished with a par on five consecutive holes, setting the tone for his afternoon. As the afternoon progressed, Monroe sprinkled in three birdies, vaulting him to victory.

“I felt pretty good going into the tournament. … I wasn’t that nervous. I was practicing the last two, three days at the driving range,” he said.

However, when it came time to tee off, Monroe admitted to be a little nervous with people watching, but afterward, he said he felt “totally fine.”

With the tournament win, Monroe hopes to build on the success, as he is preparing for tryouts on the East varsity team in August. Monroe is hoping to clean up his game, in particular, his driving.

His solution?

Just keep practicing.

In the boys senior division, five golfers all finished with a 79, prompting a playoff between them. Aurora native Jeremy Forbes ultimately came out on top.

‘I HAD TO HAVE HER ON MY TEAM’ Batavia alum Sawyer blazed trail for Augustana women’s tennis

By JAKE BARTELSON jbartelson@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – As the sun sets on her women’s tennis career at Augustana College, former Batavia standout Kim Sawyer will leave a legacy like no other, exiting as the program’s all-time leader in singles (106) and total wins (178).

And that is only the beginning.

Three times the team’s most valuable player and twice the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Player of the Year, Sawyer recently concluded a senior season which netted both singles and doubles championships.

This season, Sawyer led the team to a 18-7 record and a No. 16 ranking in the NCAA Division III Central Region after Augustana fell to Wheaton College and lost the chance to compete in the Division III national tournament.

As an individual, Sawyer compiled a 24-5 record and claimed her second straight CCIW No. 1 singles championship. In addition, she teamed with Aileen MacDonald to win a conference title at second doubles.

Sawyer recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies and Disorders.

Sawyer got her start in tennis because of her mother, Debbie, who played tennis in high school and college. Having sisters Kristina and Katie play varsity at Batavia before her didn’t hurt, either.

“She didn’t really start playing intensely until eighth grade, freshman year,” Debbie Sawyer estimates.

Yet, once she started her freshman year at Batavia in 2006, Sawyer took the sport by storm. After starting as a four-year varsity player and leaving the program with the second-most wins (105), and eight tournament victories, she set off for Augustana in the fall of 2010, and immediately settled in.

In addition, she posted a 22-9 record in doubles From there, Sawyer never looked back, and power-served her way to a second-place finish at the CCIW singles championship. Sawyer also earned a first-team all conference selection and became the recipient of the Viking Newcomer award.

All as a freshman.

“I accomplished more than I expected over my four years there,” Sawyer said. “I actually didn’t know I was close to breaking the [career singles wins] record, so it was nice [when I did].”

All those accolades didn’t come without a grueling schedule, as Sawyer had practice five days a week and matches on the weekends, all while balancing classes and homework, as well.

Sawyer began her collegiate career under Adam Strand, who coached the 2010-

11 season. He left the school the next season to accept the men’s and women’s tennis head coaching positions at his alma mater, Luther College.

As the recruitment process got underway, Strand watched Sawyer at a high school match, and recalled noticing her intangibles and mental toughness right away.

“I had to have her on my team. There was someone who could help change the culture of the team,” Strand said.

Once Sawyer arrived on campus, it quickly became evident to him how hard she worked to improve every day, and Strand especially noticed how her confidence grew as the season progressed.

“After awhile, I think she realized what she could do at this level, and I told her she can be a special player. She is probably one of my favorite players I’ve ever coached,” he said.

Once Strand left, Jon Miedema took over as women’s coach at Augustana. He previously served as the men’s head coach at Grace Bible College for the 2010-11 season.

Above all, Sawyer’s parents, Debbie and Chuck, were

always there to support her.

“They attended almost all of my matches, so I wanted to make them proud,” Sawyer said.

And proud seems to be an understatement.

“I think as parents you’re happy when your kids find a passion and have success doing it,” Debbie Sawyer said.

“Kim is well-respected on and off the court, and several times throughout her career, coaches would come up to us and compliment her.”

Debbie Sawyer recalled matches against Wheaton College were always tough for her daughter because they could have gone either way, but Sawyer always had the will to succeed.

While her collegiate career is finished, she is set to attend the University of Tennessee for her doctorate in audiology.

Although her eligibility is finished for competing in the NCAA, Sawyer hopes to connect with a tennis club during her time there. In the meantime, she is staying active in the tennis scene, as she currently teaches tennis lessons at the St. Charles Country Club.

“It makes me want to play more, but now I get to teach kids how to play,” Sawyer said.

Maybe she’ll be a coach later on?

“Once I get a job,” she said.

The team advanced to the league championship series the past two Septembers but lost to Vancouver. Van Tol finds reloading to be a smooth process as the Hawks comprise players from extended spring training or full-season affiliates with the Cubs’ recent collection of high draft picks.

“There’s a lot of core guys that understand the language and have been in the system a little bit. Coming out of extended, of course, they’re all fired up to get out of Arizona and get up here and play in front of somebody, and so there’s no motivational speeches whatsoever,” Van Tol said.

“Everybody’s pretty fired up and ready to go, and as the new players come in, it helps with that transition, because it can be a long one for these guys, especially the new players.”

Van Tol’s wife, Chrissy, serves as a senior associate athletic director

at Boise State. The couple has four children, and considering the names of their two sons – Gehrig and Gibson – Gary Van Tol’s appetite for baseball is evident.

The family has lived in Boise since 2008, but Van Tol certainly allows his interests to travel elsewhere.

“It’s a good set-up for him. He’s right there at home. He does a great job, you know,” Johnson said. “He gets these guys prepared to go to the next level just like we try to get these guys prepared to go to [Advanced-A] Daytona. It’s a crucial level. That first short season, it’s the first time a lot of these guys are playing affiliated ball.

That’s not easy. He definitely does a good job.”

Short-A Boise manager Gary Van Tol beams at the end of most Hawks’ road trips, provided he’s still awake.

It’s not so much the relief of sevento 10-hour bus rides ending as it is spotting picturesque Pacific Northwest landscapes at dawn.

Van Tol learned to look around early in his baseball career, although he didn’t let that derail him from being as diligent as they come.

Even from many miles away, one of his passions is charting the Cougars. Van Tol worked with many of the club’s current players as they prepared to climb to the parent Cubs’ Class-A affiliate, and is especially close with the field staff of manager Mark Johnson, pitching coach David Rosario and hitting coach Tom Beyers.

“All the players there are in good hands with those three guys,” Gary Van Tol Van Tol said. “I’m proud of all of them for the first half and what they’ve accomplished, and it’s going to be an exciting year to watch from outside of the area and see how they’re doing there in Kane County.”

Van Tol was Johnson’s bench coach for two seasons with the Hawks, worked with Rosario for four seasons and considers Beyers one of his mentors.

He recently opened his second season as Hawks manager and texted Johnson on Tuesday upon learning Cubs first-round draft pick Kyle Schwarber had been promoted from Boise to Kane County.

Van Tol sent another message when the Cougars clinched the Midwest League’s first-half Western Division title two weeks ago. Of course, the congratulatory correspondences go both ways. Now in his seventh season with the club and second as manager, he and the Hawks are bid-

In the interest of formality, Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley opened the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat by greeting the subject with a courtesy title. The Cougars’ new chief executive officer, president and majority owner technically could go by “Mr. Froehlich,” although most know him by the colloquial “Dr. Bob.” Bob Froehlich earned his Ph.D. in 1979, and since has ascended to become a noted Wall Street influence, television personality and author. Earlier this month, Froehlich and his wife, Cheryl, became the Cougars’ largest shareholders as previous majority co-owners Mike Murtaugh and Mike Woleben remain in a minority role. Here’s an edited transcript of Froehlich’s conversation with the Chronicle:

A few days in, how has this been and how has it suited you?

Well, it’s pretty exciting.

If you can’t be excited about buying and owning a minor league baseball team that happens to be in first place

– going from last place last year to first place this year – it’s a pretty exciting time for the Cougars and a pretty exciting time for the Cubs, and it’s just great to be a part of all that excitement.

Take me through going from minority owner to now.

My wife and I bought ownership interest in January of 2013, so we were the largest minority owners at that point in time, so we had about 10 percent ownership.

So we got a good feel for everything about the organization and a better understanding of the Midwest League, and just, it made sense for something we always wanted to do. It’s interesting. My wife had always wanted us to have a family business.

I just always worked in corporations … you know, and she always thought, ‘Boy, wouldn’t it be fun to have a family business.’ And I’ve always loved baseball, I played semipro baseball for a few years in Pittsburgh, and this was just an opportunity to bridge those two things.

To have a business and run it like a family business, and

And the former co-owners are staying on in the minority group?

They still have minority ownership, and we created a nine-person board of directors. Both of the Mikes are on there, and they both have two family members joining them. … So they will stay involved at that level. They’re the largest minority owners.

They have that legacy of knowing what’s going on.

Getting the lay of the land, what do you plan to do to put your family business stamp on it, so to speak?

Well, I mean, we’re going to continue to keep the family entertainment aspect. That, quite frankly, that’s key. And to us, really, everything we’re going to do there is going to have to go through screens. And the first is: Is this going to make it better for the fans? … Anything we’re doing, anything we’re thinking of doing, we have to ask the question is this to make it better for the fans. And if we answer that question ‘Yes,’ then we go onto the next one, and that is, is this something that the Cubs are going to be excited about. … Our core responsibilities are to the fans and our relationship with the Cubs. … It’s such a special affiliation. Not that the other affiliations are not, but this is not like it’s affiliated with Kansas City or the Florida Marlins. The Chicago Cubs are the greatest [operation] out there, and we have to do everything in our power to get that affiliation extended and have a long, deep relationship with the Cubs.

[Double-A] Tennessee recently extended its player

development contract with the Cubs. Have you been part of any recent negotiations?

You know, we’re in ongoing discussions with them.

We had, at the end of the last year and we’re still discussing this year. It’s a business decision for the Cubs, and we respect that, and we know we’re part of the Midwest League, you know. There’s 16 teams, and every team in the Midwest League would love to have the Cubs affiliation.

So we know how fortunate we are; we have it. We’re working very hard to get it extended, but at the end of the day, you know, it’s the Cubs’ decision that’s really the basis of this decision. … It’s a great prize to try to win.

What have you observed about Cougars fans thus far?

I’m very excited about the focus on the game. … When they clinched, my wife and I were there, and it was raining and they had to cancel the Jesse White Tumblers but we still had fireworks.

and they stayed. And they stayed because they had been clinching, clinching that title.

And what was interesting to me was that the focus wasn’t about the water balloons or catching the T-shirt … the focus was actually about what was going on on the field. …

So if we can give them great family entertainment and a great product on the field at the same time, that’s just a wonderful victory by the Cubs.

He also started behind the plate for the first time in two Midwest League games.

Schwarber played left field Thursday but was primarily a catcher at Indiana.

Tyler Bremer, who pitched a perfect ninth for his ninth save, conferred with Schwarber before the game and lauded his pitch calling on the fly.

“He worked fast and I loved it,” Bremer said. “Got loose quick and got to get in there and had a lot of adrenaline going and stuff. It was fun.”

Third baseman Jeimer Candelario, who transferred from Daytona back to the Cougars at the All-Star break, created a save situation for Bremer by knocking a go-ahead, two-run double in the eighth to score Yasiel Balaguert and Jacob Rogers.

Rogers, the Cougars’ first baseman, enjoyed a busy night as he prepared for the arrival of his parents from Clearwater, Florida. They hadn’t watched him play since last season at Boise.

“Yeah. He has fun,” Johnson said. “Every time it rains, all he wants to do is slide on the tarp a little. Gotta love the enthusiasm.”

At this point, that passion doesn’t seem to be going anywhere.

What’s that again about things changing and still saying the same?

How long have you gone by ‘Dr. Bob?’ Oh, gosh, for like the last 20 years. With a last name like ‘Froehlich,’ that no one can spell and, you know, someone in marketing at

Kemper Funds had said, ‘You know what, we’re tired of trying to spell your name; we’re just going to go with the first part, and call you Dr. Bob,’ and it sort of caught on to the television part of it.

You mentioned semipro ball in Pittsburgh. What position did you play?

Yeah, I was a center fielder. It was the great Pittsburgh Federation League, so it was the same league that Art Howe and then the NFL Hall-of-Famers played there, Dan Marino and Art Rooney, Sr. ... I had a great arm, pretty fast. My strenghths were my speed and my arm. I blew my knee out in 1971, right before I went to college. I had to have surgery. And for the spring season, I blew it out again. So I had two surgeries, and that ended my [playing] days.

How to keep roses disease free As we move into the warmest days of the season, many will see their roses begin to decline. Mildew, black spot, rust.

Did you know that you can effectively inoculate your roses against disease? Yes, you can!

All Season Oil, applied when temperatures are below 80 degrees, is one method of disease prevention. All Season Oil is a more refined form of dormant oil and is used to smother overwintering insects in the spring, as well as disease spores. It has been used for centuries and is one of the best and safest alternatives to chemical substances. But it must be used when temperatures will remain below 80 degrees for 24 hours to avoid burning the foliage. For ease of use, purchase one that can be attached to a hose, and spray according to labeled directions. (The oil is toxic to smoke bushes so be sure to avoid them). It’s a great preventative and control for insects and disease spores.

The second weapon in your arsenal for disease prevention is sulphur, another organic substance. It prevents, and to some extent controls, all of the above diseases. Find a concentrate, buy an inexpensive spray bottle, and

Weapon No. 3 is liquid seaweed, which you can buy in concentrated form and spray on your roses from top to bottom (undersides, too, please). It is recommended by rosarians for a reason. It is sold as a powder as well as a liquid. It boosts plant nutrition and, when used as a spray, (I give my roses a spritz every week) seems to keep roses largely disease free.

All of these can be found in garden centers, hardware stores or on the Internet.

It’s mildly disconcerting to be critiqued by your offspring. Especially when they’re teenagers. By then, they’re really “on” to you.

Know what I mean? They “see” you, even size you up, much as your peers might – but if you’re lucky, like I am, they’ll also share their observations with you.

You know, like my personal favorite, “You chew so loudly.” Yup, good times.

(I’m beginning to develop a complex. Do strangers think I chew “weird,” I wonder?)

Oh, how I miss the days when my children issued love notes, instead. Now, I’d just settle for a day without snark.

Whilst rummaging through a box of old pictures this week, in search of a few to bring to our family reunion, I happened upon a bundle of their sweet notes to me. Oh, what a joy, to stumble upon the first one, the “I love you, Mom!” scribbled on sketch paper in “little-kid” handwriting so many years ago, the edge still ragged from being torn from the pad, and illustrated with a huge heart. The heart fills the page. It was displayed on my fridge for months.

There are a few tears and a few more ragged edges, now.

I haven’t gotten one in quite a while. These days, my kids are adolescents, and I’m more apt to inspire embarrassment than admiration.

Parents of teenagers can surely relate. Seems we mortify our dear offspring without even trying.

For example, not only do I chew loudly, but I speak loudly, too. And even laugh way too enthusiastically – so I’m told.

“We’re already ‘that’ family, and we haven’t even gotten on the plane,” Holly said, as I giggled at the gate before we boarded, bound for our reunion. Ah, yes, the old “laughing in public” offense.

From now on, whenever I feel waves of adolescent snark coming my way, well, first I’ll try to look for any grains of truth they may deliver (no one dishes out more candor than a teenager) – but then I’ll remember the sweet little note with the big heart, and let my heart swell once more.

The love “notes” my kids issue these days may look a little different – and may be harder to read – but they’re not lost on me.

“That” family? Why yes, yes indeed.

‘Jersey Boys’: Catchy, but a few falsetto moves

By STEPHANIE MERRY The Washington Post Movies of musicals are usually a crash course for Hollywood A-listers. Actors not known for their singing skills are suddenly expected to warble their way through a story. You see Meryl Streep shimmying and strutting to Abba in “Mamma Mia!” and Renee Zellweger hitting the high notes in “Chicago,” Johnny Depp cutting hair and throats while channeling Sondheim in “Sweeney Todd” and Hugh Jackman making us weep as Jean Valjean in “Les Miserables.”

And what of the Broadway superstars who gave the musicals the cachet to warrant the film adaptations? They’re still performing night after night onstage, since their names aren’t recognizable enough to score big box office numbers – much less get proper introductions at the Oscars (ahem, “Adele Dazeem”).

“Jersey Boys” is an exception. The most recognizable stars in Clint Eastwood’s adaptation of the Tony-winning play about the 1960s band the Four Seasons are Christopher Walken and that guy from “The Sopranos” (who upon post-movie Googling turns out to be Steve Schirripa). John Lloyd Young plays Frankie Valli, a role the actor originated on Broadway. He won a Tony for his

work, but this is only his second feature film after a 2009 romantic comedy called “Oy Vey! My Son Is Gay!” Of course, who in Hollywood could possibly mimic Frankie Valli’s formidable falsetto? Just imagine James Franco trying to get through “Big Girls Don’t Cry.” On second thought, don’t.

Young might not be a household name, but he can sing and act onstage and on camera. And the rest of the cast is also made up of musical theater talent: Michael Lomenda, who plays the deepvoiced Nick Massi, and Erich Bergen, as singer-songwriter Bob Gaudio, both return to roles they played during the show’s first national tour. The fourth band member, Tommy DeVito, is played by “Boardwalk Empire” regular Vincent Piazza.

The cast list isn’t the only way Eastwood stays true to the original incarnation. Seeing the movie onscreen is a lot like seeing it in a playhouse – and that’s OK. After all, the story is dramatic, with its tale of kids from a rough neighborhood who shoot to fame with catchy hit after catchy hit but can’t quite keep it together. Plus, the dialogue is witty and the music is phenomenal.

There isn’t a lot of fancy camera work or special effects, and the movie even retains the way characters directly

addressed the audience in the play. This particular gimmick feels a little unnecessary in the adaptation. Facial expressions, which aren’t always visible for a theater audience, can do a lot of explaining in films: When Bob hears Frankie sing for the first time, for instance, a look of astonishment comes over his face before he turns to the camera and says, “After 30 seconds, I know I need to write for this voice.” But we figured that out already.

The movie, like the play, also overstuffs the plot. Valli suffered a harrowing family tragedy that makes its way into the narrative. Yet with so much attention paid to the band and so little paid to his personal life up until that point, the misfortune feels shoehorned into the story as a way to exhibit the hero hitting rock bottom.

Overall though, fans of the play will be pleased. And for those that love the Four Seasons’ music but haven’t made it to the play, you can put your fear of missing out to rest. This is a much more affordable way to very nearly re-create the experience.

• “Jersey Boys” received two-and-ahalf stars out of four. The film is rated R and contains language. It runs 134 minutes.

His nighttime ritual of cleaning up before bed takes an hour or more.

Before we can be intimate, this ritual must be performed, which rules out anything in the afternoon or that’s spontaneous.

Barney is also a night owl.

Sometimes he goes straight from the shower to the Internet or reading, ignoring sex altogether, even if we planned and talked about it while getting ready to clean up.

I have fallen asleep many nights waiting for him, only to awaken hours later and see he’s still not beside me. When we discuss it later, he says it’s a selfish habit he “got away with” in his last marriage.

He enjoys sex but becomes easily distracted.

Should we seek counseling for this or try something else? Barney displays all the signs of ADD and

The ritual you described could be a symptom of a disorder, or your husband may have a very weak sex drive. Jury still out on taking multivitamins to prevent ailments Dear Doctor K: I’m a healthy 50-year-old woman. Do I need to take a multivitamin/mineral supplement?

Dear Reader: Following the news on supplements is like watching a pingpong match. One study finds supplements improve health, then another study questions their benefit. Back and forth they go.

One recommendation about vitamin supplements is not in dispute: Women of childbearing age should take folic acid supplements. Folic acid (often classified with the B vitamins) reduces the risk of a woman giving birth to a baby with neural tube defects. The most common of these defects is called spina bifida. Neural tube defects can cause permanent neurological damage: difficulty swallowing, breathing and moving. IF YOU ARE A WOMAN OF CHILDBEARING AGE WHO WANTS CHILDREN, AND YOU ARE NOT TAKING DAILY FOLIC ACID SUPPLEMENTS, TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR: YOU PROBABLY SHOULD BE. Did I say that loud enough?

Another recommendation that is not in dispute: If you have osteoporosis (thin bones) or osteopenia (borderline thin bones), you should talk to your doctor about taking vitamin D, along with calcium. They protect your bones.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Now we get into the controversy. Last year, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, a panel of disease prevention experts, reviewed research published over the past decade. The task force concluded there isn’t enough evidence to support use of vitamin and mineral supplements to prevent heart disease, cancer or deaths from these diseases in healthy adults. So, does this close the book on supplements for disease prevention?

My colleague Dr. Howard Sesso, an epidemiologist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital, doesn’t think so. As an example, he points to the Physician’s Health Study. This large, well-designed study found taking a daily multivitamin significantly reduced cancer risk.

Individual vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin D, also warrant further study. A number of observational studies suggest vitamin D may help prevent chronic diseases, besides its beneficial effect on thin bones. Dr. Sesso is working on a large, long-term trial that will study the effects of vitamin D on cancer, heart disease

and stroke risks.

While the research continues, ask your doctor for an individualized recommendation. If you have or are at risk for osteoporosis, for example, your doctor will likely recommend calcium and vitamin D. You can also consider a daily multivitamin if your diet is less than perfect. It doesn’t replace a balanced diet, but it can help fill nutritional gaps. And we don’t know of health risks from taking a multivitamin.

If you choose to take a supplement, stick with the major brands.

They are well tested and are more likely to fall in line with recommended doses. (I’ve put tables listing recommended amounts of vitamins and minerals on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Avoid specialized multivitamin formulations – for immunity support, heart health, energy, etc.

– unless your doctor recommends otherwise. One exception: If you are over age 50, choose a vitamin designed for seniors. It will contain the right vitamin and mineral levels for you.

Healthy teen accused of being anorexic by grandma Dr. Wallace: I’m 16 and consider myself to be very healthy even though I’m on the slim side. I’m active in sports and exercise five days a week. I’m very serious about eating well-balanced nutritious foods and I get proper rest. I guess you could call me a “fitness freak.”

About three months ago, my grandfather died, and it was decided that my grandmother would live with us. I love her dearly, but she is a bit opinionated. She is trying to convince my parents that I’m “almost” anorexic and that I need to “put some fat on my bones.”

Now, even my dad thinks that I’m undernourished.

What can I do to convince my parents and my grandmother that I don’t need to gain weight to be healthy?

According to Dr. Grant Gwinup, professor of medicine at the University of California at Irvine, overeating and its consequence, being overweight, is the major problem of North Americans.

Overweight people die at increased rates of everything you can think of – heart disease, cancer, diabetes, gall bladder, liver and brain disease.

“The fatter one is, the greater one’s chances are to have these diseases,” says Gwinup. “Not only do the diseases eventually cause death, they also change the quality of one’s life by destroying one’s health.

Dr. Wallace: Last week my friend was given a new car for her 18th birthday. Yesterday, she called me and wanted to go for a ride in her birthday present, so we drove up to the mountains and had lunch in Big Bear.

Bridge is full of rules that need to be taken with a large pinch of salt. Always treat each deal on its own merits; do not thoughtlessly assume that the “textbook” play will be right.

How does that apply to this deal? South is in three no-trump.

West leads his fourth-highest heart. South takes East’s 10 with his king and runs the diamond 10.

What should happen after that?

South did not like to open one no-trump with two unstopped suits, but he had no more accurate sequence available.

The books recommend returning partner’s suit in no-trump – and it is true that that will be right much more often than not.

(In a suit contract, shifting will be better a lot of the time.) But if East does that here, South will take the trick with his heart ace and drive out West’s diamond ace. West may shift to a club, but declarer plays low from the dummy and loses only two diamonds and two clubs.

Instead, East should pause for thought at trick three. Surely West has the diamond ace, because if South had that card, he would have cashed it before trying the diamond finesse. And if West is about to gain the lead, East should see how to defeat the contract. At trick three, he leads his club three.

South wins with his 10 and continues diamonds, but West should take the trick and lead his second club. Then East gets three tricks in the suit to defeat the contract.
