Chronicle earns IPA contest honors The Kane County Chronicle picked up several honors during the Illinois Press Association’s editorial awards banquet last week.

In its division, the Chronicle won second-place awards for best government beat reporting (Ashley Sloboda), best illustration (Scott Helmchen) and best sports column (former sports editor Jay Schwab).

It also received honorable mentions for business/economic reporting (Sloboda) and news reporting-series (Sloboda).

Of the second-place award for best illustration – the illustration having been packaged with a series by features editor Kara Silva about eating disorders – the

EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Gresey judges wrote, “Well done, with simple details that illustrate the seriousness of the topic.”

And of the second-place award for best sports column, the judges wrote: “There are as many biting hints of good-natured satire in Schwab’s columns on the Cubs and Mooseheart as there are heartfelt moments in his elegy to the late Jim Newbill. A pleasure to read for his insights and well-developed writing style.”

For the honorable mention for business/economic

reporting – which was for a series about new businesses setting up shop in Kane County – the judges wrote: “This package on how people can be successful starting their own businesses includes personal stories as well as tips from experts.

One nice addition is the article on someone whose business recently failed, which helps to provide great insight into the difficulties of running your own business.”

And for the honorable mention for best news reporting-series – which also was for the series on new businesses – the judges wrote: “This two-parter was terrific. Sloboda tackled the subject of small business starts and the difficulty of

doing so in a climate that favors franchises and name brands over individual ownership. But it can be done.”

Free garbage stickers offered for water cleanup KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Geneva residents who had water damage stemming from the June 15 storm are invited to contact the city’s Public Works Department for a limited allotment of free garbage stickers.

To receive stickers, residents would need to call the

Geneva Public Works Department at 630-232-1501 to schedule a site visit. Once the public works employee has verified the damage is weather-related, the garbage stickers will be given to the resident.

The damaged items can be placed at the curb on the regular trash collection days Thursday and Friday, June

25 and 26. The stickers will be issued on a first-come, firstserved basis until the supply is exhausted.

Normal business hours for the Public Works Department is 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.

The June 15 storm dumped more than 4 inches of water on Geneva, including 2 inches between the hours of 5 and

9 p.m. Through the first three weeks in June, the city has had 6.1 inches of rain, which is three times higher than the normal monthly average for this time of year.

Public Works Department crews spent this week attending to calls from residents for standing water, weather-related damage and clearing catch basins.

When was the last time you got something more than you bargained for ... in a good way?

I don’t mean to brag but, ahem, that sort of good fortune happens just about every day when you’re a naturalist.

Take Thursday, for instance. I had gone to the Pottawatomie Community Center for a meeting, which turned out to be 40 minutes of exactly what I’d expected – a review of minutes, a few notes on policy, a little discussion of procedure. It was afterward that the day improved dramatically.

I’d headed out to the Native Plant Garden and was making my way toward the water willow – the main reason for my visit – when I heard the nasal call of a bluegray gnatcatcher. Two bluegray gnatcatchers, actually, and they were busy scolding something. Me? Maybe. I let them go about their business and continued down the trail toward the river.

As I rounded a bend in the path, a couple of other birds caught my ear. A Baltimore oriole was singing, his notes crystal clear despite the strong breeze. And an indigo bunting was putting his heart and soul into his song, the pattern of which matches the words, “Fire! Fire! Where?

Where? Here! Here! See it!

See it!”

The bunting remained hidden, but the oriole flitted from branch to branch in the big bur oak, his flame-orange breast flashing like the blaze the bunting was so fired up about.

I looked toward the river and spotted the water willow ahead. But I also saw a double-breasted cormorant flying low above the water, and two cedar waxwings – my absolute favorite birds! These two were using a river birch as a launching and landing pad as they flew after and gobbled

Just ahead was the water willow; ostensibly my mission would soon be complete.

But, wouldn’t you know, I saw a pair of eyes peering out from the water at the base of some swamp milkweed.

A bullfrog the size of my fist was watching me, probably trying to figure out if I posed any sort of risk.

I didn’t, but he couldn’t have known that – especially when I stuck my camera phone within inches of his face. After a couple of seconds of contemplation, and two clicks of the camera, he vanished, leaving me with one decent shot of a frog and another so-so pic of the ripples he left behind.

The water willow was beckoning, only a few feet away, but then … what should come swimming along but three blackstripe topminnows! These fish are a common nongame species in our area, and even though folks refer to them as “just” a minnow, their markings

A dark (OK, black) line along each side helps them blend in to their surroundings, and a white dot on the top of their head makes them easy to identify – a real plus for all us non-ichthyologists.

COVER STORY EMBRACING HISTORY Celebrating 100 years of the Fabyan Windmill in Geneva

By KATIE KULL kkull@shawmedia.com GENEVA – On breezy summer days just north of Batavia on Route 25, car passengers and bike riders catch the alternating sails of a windmill arching over the leaves of trees and disappearing into the foliage. If they move further down the road, the shingled, bell-like curve of the Fabyan Windmill appears in full.

The Dutch mill’s position on a popular sledding hill makes it a familiar sight for residents of the Tri-Cities. As of this year, it has been sitting in the same spot for 100 years, which is reason to celebrate for the Forest Preserve District of Kane County.

The forest preserve district has owned the mill since the late 1930s, when it was purchased from relatives of Col. George Fabyan, the owner of the estate, after he died.

A long history

The classic Dutch mill sat in Lombard before it moved to Geneva. It was built between 1875 and 1876 by German craftsmen Louis Backhaus and Friedrich Brockmann, according to information provided by the forest preserve district.

In 1914, Fabyan purchased the mill for $8,000. He was a millionaire businessman who inherited much of his wealth from his father’s textile business – Bliss, Fabyan and Co. Over the course of 30 years, Fabyan developed an estate of more than 300 acres in Geneva, complete with Japanese gardens, a Frank Lloyd Wright villa, a private zoo, a farm and several greenhouses.

In 1915, Fabyan contracted the Edgar E. Belding Co. of West Chicago to disassemble the mill and move it from Lombard to his estate in Geneva. He contracted Danish millwright Mr. Rassmussen (his first name was not available in records) and John Johnson of Batavia to put it back together and redo the interior.

They added hard maple floors, trimmed the cypress wood beams with black walnut, made new gears, and varnished most of the wood inside. Builders also put a bakery in the basement with a coal-burning stove – a dangerous addition in the wooden structure. The only modern additions were electricity for lights, an iron drive shaft to run machinery and a central vacuum system to keep the floors clean, head miller Mark Rivecco said.

“That’s one of the things that makes this mill different from other windmills. A windmill is a factory – it’s a thing, a machine to do something. … Fabyan wanted this to be a showpiece, so it’s pretty,” Rivecco said. “He wanted this to not only be a factory to grind grain, he wanted this to be a beautiful place to be.”

The mill was fairly automated, so there were only three or four workers at a time, Rivecco said.

Grain elevators lifted raw grain to the top floor, then gravity did the rest. The sails turned a cog, which turned a shaft, which turned grinders and a sharpening wheel in the basement. The grain fell through a grain separator, hoppers, grinders and sifters until it stopped at the bottom.

The finished product fed livestock on the estate and was used to bake bread. There

The windmill is on the east side of Fabyan Forest Preserve, on Route 25. is no indication Fabyan sold any of it, though there is evidence he used the bread to feed his two bears, Tom and Jerry, according to forest preserve information.

Information about the mill was scarce at first. In 2005, when docent Ron Behnke started, “the place was an informational wreck,” he said.

People speculated about the mill’s original location for years, but Behnke decided to solve the mystery once and for all. He spent hours at the DuPage County Register of Deeds to find out where the mill was originally located and used property records to determine when it was built.

“We have none of the original paperwork, so we had to generalize a lot [before]. Now

we have a fairly complete knowledge,” Behnke said.

Behnke consolidated the information into brochures to hand out for tours of the mill.

A continued legacy

In 1936, Fabyan died. His wife died three years later and Fabyan’s relatives sold the mill to the forest preserve for about $70,500 in 1939, according to www.illinoiswindmills.org. Other than sporadic groups entering through the unlocked doors, volunteers speculate the mill sat unoccupied for decades.

“We get people coming in here all the time saying, ‘I grew up in the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s’ … name your decade … and there’s always somebody who has a tale,” head docent Jennifer Duncan said. “Sometimes, they say they’d come with school or totally random things, and we couldn’t figure out if there was something official happening or what.”

Despite the unofficial nature of visits during those years, the mill was well-kept, Duncan said.

“You think about how long it was open, and there’s [only] three little bits of graffiti up in the back. They took such great care of it over all these years,” she said.

The mill sat in “elegant disrepair” until 1997, when forest

preserve district volunteers discovered rotting wooden posts and other deteriorating structures, Rivecco said. The forest preserve district contracted Danish millwright Lucas Verbij to head a restoration project.

Restorers also repaired rotted beams, replaced teeth in central wooden gears, fixed the cap and parts of the sails, and rebuilt grain hoppers, grain elevators and chutes.

The fully-operational mill opened to the public in 2005.

It no longer grinds grain, but it could if there were somewhere to put it, Rivecco said.

A community staple

When the sails are turning, the mill draws curious members of the community to explore its three open floors and gaze off the deck overlooking the Fabyan Forest Preserve on one side and Route 25 on the other.

“She has been bothering me to stop in every time we passed,” said Elburn resident Ron Davis of his wife, Cindy Davis, when they visited the mill on June 14. “Today was the day we finally came in.”

Most residents express a similar sentiment.

“We were just driving past and thought today would be a good day to come inside,” said Erika Solgos of Aurora.

The Fabyan Windmill’s legacy stretches beyond Kane County. It is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and was featured on a postage stamp in the 1980s as part of the series “Windmills U.S.A,” according to the forest preserve district’s website.

Kane County Forest Preserve District staff and volunteers will recognize the mill’s centennial anniversary in Geneva with a celebration at noon July 25 at the mill.

The free celebration will include food, music, giveaways, windmill tours and a pinwheel-making station.

Volunteers also will hide a time capsule in the mill to be opened in 2115. The theme is “Fabyan Windmill: 100 Years & Countless Memories.” Staff are looking for photographs, poems, drawings, articles and more for the capsule. Items can’t be any bigger than 8.5 by 11 inches and cannot be plastic, wood or electronic.

Residents can mail or deliver items to forest preserve district headquarters, 1996 S. Kirk Road, Suite 320, Geneva, from June through September.

Erika Solgos said she has lived in the area her entire life, but had never gone inside the mill before. Her kids enjoyed it despite the difficult climb from the basement to the second floor.

“It’s a little scary because of all the stairs,” Sitota Solgos said.

Without its volunteers, the windmill wouldn’t be open to the public. Twelve volunteer millers and eight volunteer docents help run and maintain the mill, but they come and go based on availability, according to Robb Cleave, the forest preserve district’s volunteer coordinator.

On a sunny Sunday in midJune, the windmill’s sails turned in the breeze, and six of the millers lounged on the deck overlooking the forest preserve. They met visitors, cracked jokes and handed out handkerchiefs for the mill’s centennial celebration, which will be at the end of July.

“It gets kind of boring if its not running – that’s why we’re all here today,” one of the millers, Roger Henry, said.

The mill needs constant maintenance. Millers make sure the cap that holds the sails stays in place by adjusting it to face the wind. Rivecco showed a video of a windmill in Germany that lost its sails during a windstorm when it was left unattended.

I leaned over, hoping for a closer look, but instead must’ve spooked them, because all I saw was seven tails disappearing into the dark river depths.

Finally, I was left with only the water willow before me. I checked out the leaves – opposite – and looked at the buds – not anywhere near blooming yet. I also took a look at the water level it was growing – pretty high because of our recent rains.

And then I was done.

A five-minute errand turned into 15 minutes of pure delight, a nice distraction in the middle of an otherwise busy day.

Barbara Ann (McCollom) Andersen was a New Year’s baby, born January 1, 1931, in Quincy, Illinois, to the late Malcolm and Mildred McCollom Foehlinger. She lived in Burlington, Iowa from the third grade on and graduated from Burlington High School in 1948. She attended Burlington Jr. College for two years. Then, she transferred to Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa for one year.

On August 19, 1951, Barbara married the love of her life, John Andersen. They were married at Grace United Methodist Church in Burlington, Iowa.

In 1951, her senior year, she transferred to Coe College where she graduated with a B.S. in Elementary Education in 1952.

Barbara taught second grade for one year at Emerson School in Marian, Iowa before starting a family. Three of their children, Mark, Scott, and Christine were all born in Marian, Iowa. In 1960, they moved to Geneva, Illinois where John accepted a position as an Elementary School Principal for the West Chicago School District #33.

In 1961, John and Barb built their family home on 17 Nebraska Street and lived there for 27 years.

In 1963 Julie was born completing their family of four children.

When the children were younger, Barbara was a devoted, patient,

and loving homemaker to her four children. When they were older, Barb went back to school to complete her Library Science Degree. She worked in the Elementary and Middle School libraries in the Geneva School District #304.

Barbara also worked as a Special Education Assistant at Elgin High School for 10 years before retiring in 1993.

Barbara was a 55 year member of the United Methodist Church of Geneva. She was a member of the True Value Circle, served on various committees in the church over the years, and in her early years sang in the church choir. Barbara served in her community as a tutor with the Literacy Volunteers of America Program for 7 years and was a volunteer (“pink lady”) at Delnor Community Hospital for 12 years. Barbara loved music, she played the piano and had a beautiful singing voice. She also enjoyed reading different types of literature.

Barbara was a sweet, kind, and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside. She touched many lives in her years on this earth and will be missed dearly by all of those who loved her.

She is survived by her husband of 63½ years; sons, Mark (Lore) Andersen and Scott Andersen both of Tempe, Arizona; daughters, Christine (Ronald) Donovan of Geneva and Julie Pfeiffer of Chaska, Minnesota; nine grandchildren, Phillip (Maggie) Andersen of Chicago, Julie Andersen of Scottsdale, Arizona, Eric and Patrick Donovan of Denver, Colorado, Brinn and Megan Pfeiffer of Denver, Colorado, and Wesley Henderson of Chaska, Minnesota; step sister,

Former alderman dies

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Jim Brainard remembers his father, Jack Brainard, heading off to St. Charles City Council meetings and also St. Charles Fire Department trainings every week when he was growing up.

“He was always willing to help out with the city … and give back as much as he could,” Jim Brainard said of his father.

After he moved to St. Charles in the late 1950s, Jack Brainard held several titles – assistant St. Charles fire chief, St. Charles alderman, president of the Boy Scouts of America Three Fires Council and St. Charles Township board member.

Jack Brainard died Wednesday at his home at the age of 91, according to his obituary. The visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. today at Moss-Norris Funeral Home, 100 S. Third St., St. Charles, followed by an 11 a.m. funeral service at the home.

In addition to his munic-

ipal service, Jack Brainard was a military veteran and businessman. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and conducted flight trainings during the end of World War II and later was the owner of the Bill Fisher Insurance Agency in St. Charles, Jim Brainard said.

Jack Brainard knew many people in St. Charles, and he was easy to talk to because he was knowledgeable about Jack many subjects, Brainard Jim said.

St. Charles resident Edith Madsen said she and her husband, retired St. Charles Fire Chief Karl “Kully” Madsen would meet Jack Brainard every Wednesday for lunch at the Colonial Cafe on the city’s east side. In recent weeks, Jack Brainard would talk about his early life in Ohio, Edith Madsen said.

“They were really nice people,” Edith Madsen said of Jack Brainard and his late wife, Mary.

Northern Illinois Food Bank expands its recycling center

2. The mixture is combined into a “special recipe” of mostly landscape waste, but also food waste and water.

3. The special recipe is transferred to “wind rows,” which are turned usually twice daily by a machine. In

about 10 to 15 days, the mixture turns into humus, which is an extremely hot mixture, highly regulated by the EPA. 4. In about six months, depending on the weather, the newly-made compost is sifted, packaged and shipped.

The expanded recycling space cost about $760,000 and was paid for through the support of donors, Lake said.

Food bank staff members look forward to using the space, not only for recycling, but also for storage space for boxes, shrink wrap and other supplies.

Lake said composting will help the environment, and will also save money. It costs less for Republic to pick up the food scraps than to send them to a landfill. All of the savings will go back to the food bank’s mission of serving “hungry neighbors,” she said.

The Northern Illinois Food Bank has served millions of meals to people across 13 counties in northern Illinois.

One in seven people in those counties will seek help from one of the food bank’s programs, Lake said.

GENEVA – Northern Illinois Food Bank volunteers and staff celebrated the opening of an expanded recycling center Thursday afternoon.

The addition to the food bank’s west suburban center in Geneva includes a food waste compactor, which will enable the center to recycle produce scraps in addition to recycling plastic and paper goods.

“The mission of food banking was really started with keeping food out of landfills – taking it, repurposing it and putting it to good use,” said Donna Lake, the food bank’s director of communications and philanthropy. “So now fulfilling that same mission ... we are able to take the food scraps and recycle them.”

The Northern Illinois Food Bank has partnered with a company called Republic to pick up the food waste and turn it into compost.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Following the release of Pope Francis’ encyclical on climate change, volunteers from the Fox Valley chapter of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby will be going to Washington, D.C., to lobby for a solution to climate change.

The local chapter’s founder, Monica Jenkins of Geneva, said four members will meet with U.S. Sens. Mark Kirk and Dick Durbin, as well as U.S. Reps. Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, Bill Foster, D-Naperville and Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, on Tuesday.

“We need to reduce the risk of climate change by reducing the carbon pollution we currently emit,” Jenkins said.

“We can achieve that with a market-based solution that places a steadily rising fee on carbon and gives the revenue back to consumers, thereby shielding families from the economic impact of higher energy costs.”

The volunteers hope to quell the belief that putting a price on carbon will be detrimental to the economy, Jenkins said.

“What is required is that House Republicans support the bill because they are in charge of the House right now,” Jenkins said.

A study the national group commissioned from Regional

Economic Models Inc. shows a carbon tax would create jobs as it helps transition the economy from fossil fuels to other energy, she said.

“It is a less painful path. If we have 100 percent of the fee that is requested from corporations doing pollution returned to the people as a dividend – it is the best-case scenario to do this transition,” Jenkins said.

“Energy companies also have investments in wind and sun.

They will just go to those assets in their portfolio, now that this [fossil fuels] costs more.”

The fee would be levied on carbon emissions, she said.

Some proposals call for $10 to $20 per ton, but a bill proposed

by U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-Rhode Island, starts the pricing at $45 per ton.

According to the study, 2.1 million jobs would be created after 10 years, 13,000 American lives per year would be saved because of reduced air pollution and electricity from coal would be phased out by 2025.

The estimated dividend for a family of four would be $3,456 per year in 2025, according to the study.

GENEVA – The MSNBC show, “Your Business,” will be at Peaceful Parlour, 212 S. Third St., Geneva, on Monday morning to interview the owner, and have retail consultants do a walk-through, owner Shari Ralish said.

Retail consultants Rich Kizer and Georganne Bender, of Kizer and Bender in St. Charles, will note improvements that can be made in the store’s layout to attract more customers and increase sales, Ralish said.

“They’re going to interview me, make the changes and then reveal them to me Tuesday morning, then interview me again,” Ralish said.

MSNBC also will be getting customer feedback, she said.

Ralish said she opened Peaceful Parlour, an EcoChic Boutique, six years ago with no retail experience.

The store features handmade organic herbal tea blends, local artisan jewelry, bath salts, among other items, and supports fair trade and environmental initiatives.

Geneva Lions Club celebrates community member

By ANNA DUTTON adutton@shawmedia.com The Geneva Lions Club honored Don Forni with a Life Membership Award on Thursday at its 78th annual installation and awards ceremony at Mill Creek Golf Club.

Forni now joins an elite group of Lions members, as he is one of approximately 55,000 Life Membership Award recipients out of the overall 1.4 million club members internationally.

With a motto of “We Serve,” the Geneva Lions Club raises money to benefit those who suffer from sight and hearing disabilities.

After joining the club in 1981, Forni started serving on committees, working his way up to a committee chairperson and then to a spot on the board.

He worked through each board position and served as district governor in 1998. Throughout the years, he accumulated knowledge and experience to help the club excel, according to fellow club members.

“I feel great,” said Forni.

“It’s a very nice honor, and I can’t really describe it. But it is nice that your peers are thinking of you and to give you this award. Everything that you do helps somebody else, whether you know it or not. …

One of the biggest things in my life has been when a person has come up to me and said, ‘Thank you, you’ve helped my

brother get glasses and now he can see.’ That, to me, is what we’re all here for.”

Forni’s presence in the club remains prominent to date, as he most recently dressed as Santa Claus for the club’s annual breakfast with Santa event.

“Now, you can’t imagine how hot it is in the Santa Claus suit, sitting in that thing for

five or six hours over there at the high school gymnasium and having these kids jumping on and off your lap,” said Lion Lee Perington, while presenting Forni with the award.

“This is the kind of guy we’re talking about. This guy has a heart and soul for service. He knows how to serve his Lions Club and the people that we serve.”

Following Forni’s award presentation, the club installed incoming officers and directors for the 2015-16 board, effective July 1. Nick Ninedorf, now immediate past president, passed the torch to Jay Moffat, who will serve as president this year.

“I plan on doing nothing different from the prior 77 years of success,” said Moffat. “[I’m] just trying to make sure that we as an organization continue to try to grow, and continue to increase our service opportunities within the community.”

The club also presented three $1,000 scholarships to local high school graduates who

displayed Lion-like qualities and a dedication to service.

The recipients included Anna Peterkes from St. Charles North High School, Jake Zicherman from Geneva High School and Katherine Rogers from Geneva High School.

“I honestly didn’t expect it at all because I know that there were going to be many applicants,” said Zicherman of receiving a scholarship. “I also felt very thankful for everyone here; it’s just very moving almost that they saw the traits that I told them about and they decided to support me.”

“It’s a great help,” said Peterkes. “It’s a blessing. … I was speechless.”

The club plans to launch “Friends of the Lions Club” within the next month for anyone interested in helping with service opportunities without the weekly commitment to attend club meetings. A pass on pedestrian crossing in Batavia

Aldermen in Batavia have been considering whether the city should install a pedestrian crossing with a raised concrete median in a particular area downtown.

During a Committee of the Whole meeting this month, aldermen voted against constructing the proposed crossing at Houston Street and North Batavia Avenue (Route 31). The vote was 8-4.

We back that preliminary decision. A final vote on the matter could come as soon as Monday night, when aldermen are scheduled to consider the crossing during a special meeting that starts at 7:30 p.m.

Despite the fact a significant number of people have signed a petition asking for the crossing, we’re not sure it’s a necessary addition to the downtown area.

As Batavia Police Chief Gary Schira has pointed out, pedestrians and bicyclists are able to cross at a nearby location – the signalized intersection at Wilson Street and Route 31, just south of Houston Street and Batavia Avenue.

And we have concerns that a new crossing could negatively impact the Batavia Avenue Mobil gas station, located at the southwest corner of the intersection.

“A raised curb would devastate my gasoline business,” owner Stan Oke has told aldermen.

“It would also have an impact on my repair and towing business.”

This is one proposed pedestrian crossing that Batavia aldermen just might have to walk away from.

Preserving historic structures ... and rights of property owners Determining guidelines to preserve historic structures is no easy task.

But we think Geneva aldermen are likely on the right track, considering their committee-level vote Monday to amend the historic preservation code to require a homeowner’s approval before his or her property could be landmarked.

The vote goes against the recommendation of the Geneva Historic Preservation Commission, which had proposed that at least seven of 10 alderman would need to vote to landmark a structure against an owner’s wishes for such a designation to happen.

Though the preservation commission has proposed maintaining a sensitive guideline for mandating landmark status over the objections of a homeowner, we don’t think that trumps the

inherent rights of a property owner.

Fourth Ward Alderman Jim Radecki has the right mindset, in our opinion. During the meeting Monday, he noted that a property owner should not have to go through the process of defending against some other entity landmarking his property.

“When push comes to shove, I’ll take the responsibility we may have lost a building we wish to have landmarked because we did [need] an individual [owner’s] consent,” Radecki said. “I am OK with that. I am not OK with somebody pleading with me not to.”

As discussions regarding the city’s historic preservation ordinance continue, we encourage residents to share their views so aldermen can reach an agreement on what is best for Geneva, its buildings and its property owners.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The time to act is now

To the Editor: The financial crisis of the state of Illinois is real and needs to be addressed now before it’s too late. Besides spending, the pension crisis is the major part of this problem.

Pointing fingers is nonproductive; just agree it is everyone’s fault and deal with the problem truthfully and completely.

Since there has been no offer or agreement from either current government employees and pensioners, or from any of their unions, to share the pain of fixing the problem, the new government employees will have no choice but to bear the brunt of the pension changes.

It is not right or fair, but with the recent Illinois Supreme Court decision, we have no other choice. Even without a constitutional amendment to deal with government pensions, which in this state is virtually impossible both

to get on the ballot and pass, there are still some solutions to this problem, if we have the political will: 1. Pick a date, such as Jan. 1, 2016, or the next commencement date of each government employee union contract, that from that date forward, all new government employees at all levels of government shall no longer receive any defined pension benefits but will be eligible to receive Social Security retirement benefits.

2. A government 401k plan will be offered with discretionary matching, depending on the employee’s job performance, and only after taking into account that any matching will not increase the budget for that government entity from the prior year.

3. The state should tax all pension benefits in a fair and reasonable manner.

4. Pass more health insurance costs to government employ-

ees as has been done for many years in the corporate business world.

5. Cap the maximum amount/ year that anyone can receive from government pensions, no matter how many plans they are dipping into.

6. Select a uniform percentage reduction to the budget of each state agency and program. A uniform percentage reduction is a nondiscriminatory and nonpolitical way to reduce costs.

To our elected representatives – the time to act is now; put all of your vested political interests aside for once and deal with this issue. It also is the responsibility of every resident of the state to tell all our elected representatives to act now, and – if they refuse – vote each and every one of them out of office.

ST. CHARLES – Tri-Cities residents took five of the nine top awards at the Fox Valley Repertory Performing Arts Academy’s third annual “Got Talent?” contest June 13.

The event was held at the Pheasant Run Mainstage Theater in St. Charles, according to a news release. More than 20 contestants between the ages of 8 and 18 were involved in the competition, the release states.

In addition to having the opportunity to perform onstage in front of an audience, the participants also received critiques by casting profes-

Let’s enforce the laws, and then lets see how many laws we can get rid of because we won’t need them. You can’t make laws regulating morals and ethics because, if people don’t have them, they won’t obey the law.

Right now, it’s getting voted down. I noticed the article mentioned resident Stephen Newman, and he still would like to see the pedestrian crossing there. I can appreciate that, but he kind of indicates that the council is being arbitrary and capricious and not using data. In fact, the police chief was saying it would be safer to go to the stoplight. Even in my car, I go to stoplights rather than go through unprotected intersections because of the way people are driving today.

People are texting. It’s just safer to go to the stoplight. And there is data. Data was brought that 8,000 cars go through that intersection and only 18 or 19 pedestrians or bicyclists.

SOUND OFF This last weekend we had RiverFest [in] downtown St. Charles, and the weather finally cooperated. I took the grandkids over to the carnival rides, Windy City Amusement. I was very, very impressed with how clean their equipment was, how good their signage was, and that all the safety belts and the safety equipment [were] in place and being used. They are very friendly people, and they did a great job. Thank you.

We’ve got to back Gov. Rauner

I agree with the person who talked about the cars with the people talking on the cellphones. If we can see it, why can’t the police? It would bring in a lot of money. People know it’s against the law. And we’ve got to back Gov. Rauner and stop these Democrats. All they do is tax us poor people, but they turn down a tax they would have to pay. I think we have to start stepping on them before they put us in a hole and we have to go bankrupt. Then nobody gets anything. We’ve got to help Gov. Rauner. Thank you.

Well, lemme tell ya, I think the Chronicle and The Post need to look at how many laws we have today, already, and how people who do things illegally are going to do them anyway because we have all these murders, all these things. We have the strongest gun control laws in the country in Chicago, and still we have hundreds of shootings all the time, every month. Ya know, there are other ways to make guns other than 3-D printing. I don’t know whether the Chronicle has ever heard of zip guns, but people can make that out of a piece of pipe and a clothespin. It doesn’t make any sense to pass laws; you have to change the environment. The laws are not going to change

the environment as long as you allow certain groups of people, such as illegal immigrants, to completely disobey the law, and then you allow others to disobey the laws without enforcing the laws that are already on the books. So, let’s talk enforcement without prejudice, without saying, “Oh this guy’s a good guy; you know he just did this.”

I’m calling because I just read that Nabisco workers [could] be losing their jobs because the parent company wants to send 600 jobs down to Salinas, Mexico. I am sick and tired of companies wanting to make their money here, but not having the products made here.

Geneva’s Loberg dominates volleyball, basketball in sophomore season

ENEVA – It could be that Geneva’s Grace Loberg just had beginner’s luck as far as her success from her freshman year, transitioning smoothly into high school sports.

But it would be pretty hard to say that now after her second year of dominating both volleyball and basketball.

Loberg, the now two-time Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Female Athlete of the Year, earned KCC first team honors in both sports, now as a sophomore, proving once again her success is something to be reckoned with for years to come.

“It definitely crossed my mind. ... I’m not going to lie,” Loberg said of a potential sophomore slump. “I think that thinking about it made me work that much harder to make sure it didn’t happen.

Whether it was extra workouts and training sessions, I worked extremely hard to play at that level again.”

Did the Geneva student section take long to find a different chant from “She’s a freshman” to serenade the standout athlete? Absolutely not, once they found out FRESH-MAN and SOPHOMORE had the same syllables with respect to chants.

It doesn’t matter what age Loberg is when she steps on the court because age is just a number ... right?

“I’ve been practicing both sports with older girls for most of my life,” Loberg said.

“I think that really helped the transition into high school with just not really being fazed by playing with girls two and three years older than me.”

But she wasn’t just part of teams in multiple sports, she led them to successful seasons, something that can often be looked over.

After playing her freshman volleyball season under longtime coach K.C. Johnsen, Loberg had a new coach in charge in Annie Seitelman.

Seitelman, who had coached in the Geneva program at lower levels the past few years, knew the transition into coaching at the varsity level would be much easier with a player like Loberg.

“Do you know Grace ... have you seen Grace play?”

Seitelman joked when asked about Loberg’s success.

“That’s the kind of competitor she is. I think it helped her flying under the radar some as a freshman. It allowed her to just go out and play without getting tense or feeling pressure. But this year, she had a little more of a target on her back, and it was great to see her compete at such a high level again.”

As a member of the Vikings’ volleyball team, the Wisconsin commit and outside hitter led Geneva with 330 kills, which helped the program win its third regional title in a row.

Although Loberg has com-

mitted to the Madison-based campus to play volleyball, her love for basketball has not diminished one bit.

“I love basketball and would love to play [at Geneva] for all four years.”

She has two pretty successful years of basketball under her belt as well, centering a Geneva girls basketball team that finished the season one win shy of reaching the Class 4A state tournament, but winning both regional and sectional titles.

Her 11.5 points a game and 8.1 rebounds made the 6-foot-2 sophomore a nightmare for opposing defenses.

more towards volleyball, with it having been a huge part of her life for many years. Her mom, Colleen, played volleyball at Indiana University.

But when asked, after her freshman year, if giving up basketball would be something that she could do if it aided her volleyball future, Loberg said she would approach each basketball season with an open mind.

Most high school athletes take time to mature and be able to succeed at multiple sports, but the transition has seemed like nothing to Loberg.

She doesn’t look the slightest bit like it bothers her.

She is on the courts for one reason, to have success and help her teams win games.

“It’s pretty hard, to be honest,” Loberg said of the transition. “I definitely haven’t done this alone in my first two years. My coaches, my parents ... they have helped me so much, and, of course, my teammates. [Volleyball and basketball] are two of the biggest team sports, so I would not have had success without everyone along the way. It makes it easy to play multiple sports when you have the support I do.”

Seitelman left one final piece that was worth noting.

“As good as Grace has been, I still think there’s a lot of room for her to get even better,” Seitelman said. “I think that’s the next step for her is that mental toughness when teams are gunning for her. She has a lot of room to grow and I’m excited for what her future holds.”

Thinking there is a ceiling on the potential and future of the Vikings standout athlete wouldn’t be the best idea as Loberg has proved just about every doubter wrong thus far.

It would be pretty unlikely it will stop here.

North’s Callaghan ‘as competitive a player as we’ve had’

ack Callaghan concentrated his gaze on the University of Iowa’s rec center while exploring the campus during orientation earlier this month.

“When I was walking through there, that’s probably what I was thinking about the most,” he said. “Where I’d be playing for fun and pickup ball.”

Although several St. Charles North backers might vouch for Callaghan, a recent North graduate, as a potential Hawkeye, he’ll head to Iowa City in the fall as an intramural-playing business major.

The Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Male Athlete of the Year mulled opportunities to compete in NCAA Division III basketball and football before making his decision.

“Never playing again for actual wins and losses, it’s kind of hard to fathom,” Callaghan said, “but I knew at some point I’d have to give it up. I think my future is pretty bright with going to Iowa, and I know I made the right choice.”

Consequently, traipsing down memory lane – or driving it, if we’re talking about Callaghan as a 6-foot-3, 205-pound forward during basketball season – comes without heartache.

Only a condition.

Prompted to discuss his final season of accomplishments as a North student-athlete in sequential order, Callaghan instinctively placed basketball before football and tennis, the latter of which he tried this spring after North Stars coach Sean Masoncup’s persistent politicking.

Moments after Callaghan teamed with Alex Gruber to defeat St. Charles East’s No. 4 doubles tandem in three sets in May, Masoncup paid Callaghan an endearing compliment.

Serving a tennis ball, we’ve talked about it, he said it’s as nerve-racking as anything he’s ever done. But he’s been there and done that and translates to a lot of the kids on the team.

They’re figuring out that, ‘Hey, we can do this. Let’s figure out a way and just get it done.’ ” In the winter, Callaghan provided the North boys basketball program with exemplary passion and leadership in addition to per-game averages of 10.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.4 steals.

Callaghan’s overall game helped boost North throughout the season, and was once more an asset as the North Stars pushed East in an eventual seven-point loss in a Class 4A Geneva Regional semifinal.

“Jack is as competitive as a player as we’ve had,” North Stars coach Tom Poulin said.

“I’ve been able to coach him multiple years in football and basketball, spent a lot of time with him. He’ s one of those guys who covers all the bases.

He’s competitive and he’s a good teammate, because all he wants to do is win. And sometimes that means either sacrificing personal glories or taking over. He was ready for either.”

Callaghan certainly contributed to his share of victories as senior. Before his third varsity basketball season, he played outside linebacker for a defense-driven North football team that returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2009.

In the spring, his net tenacity coupled with Gruber’s groundstrokes boosted the boys tennis team’s depth en route to an Upstate Eight Conference River Division championship.

Sunday afternoons in March as he prepared to transition from basketball to softball season.

The first few times he saw Callaghan in the tennis courts, Poulin figured he simply was exercising an avenue for competition.

Then Poulin realized Callaghan had obliged to join Masconcup, also his sophomore basketball coach freshman year and everything added up.

“What he was doing was preparing himself. He was getting ready,” Poulin said.

“That’s Jack. He was trying to get better. He wasn’t just going to go out there and not represent himself and the school to the best of his ability.”

Poulin lauds Callaghan’s integrity, as well, saying it reflects traits of the senior’s parents, Brian and Sandi.

Callaghan probed all sides of his character as the school year wound down, debating

potential lower-level basketball opportunities. Division III Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, recruited him with the most vigor, and he also pondered possibly joining friend and fellow North team leader Jake Ludwig at Roosevelt University, an NAIA school in Chicago.

Callaghan battled an especially forceful pull from basketball.

“I don’t know. I gravitated to basketball more easily,” Callaghan said. “There’s just something about the game that I just love about it, and I never felt that way about any other sport.”

It may not come with cheerleaders, pep bands and thousands of fans watching, but Callaghan realized during orientation that a regret-free avenue for jumpers and floor burns still exists.

“Absolutely,” Poulin said.

“He’ll go out and dominate some intramurals.”

Toussaint (2-2, 3.69 ERA) has made seven starts this season, and has gotten more comfortable each times he toes the rubber. He threw 73 pitches Friday, 50 of which found the strike zone.

“Getting here was like a new start for me,” Toussaint said. “I just try to be myself each time out and compete with the guys. We push each other every day and when I know guys have my back behind me, it gives me confidence to pound the zone and throw strikes.”

It could have been that significant signing bonus ($2.7 million) after being drafted last summer, but as long as the 6-foot-3, 185-pound righthander continues to develop, a promising future awaits him wherever he ends up in years to come.

“It’s awesome to see what he did out there [tonight] and hopefully he can continue to have success out there for us,” Grudzielanek said.

“Kids that come up here are mature enough,” Grudzielanek added. “If you put them in situations that they can handle, they are just fine.

He’s here now and he needs to grow up and today was a step in the right direction.”

GENEVA – Last year’s first-round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Touki Toussaint has seen his fair share of ups and down as a member of the Kane County Cougars this season.

Toussaint, who turns 19 today, had his best start of the season, throwing six, onehit shutout innings in the Cougars 4-1 win over the Peoria Chiefs Friday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

B o r n i n Touki Toussaint Coral Springs, Florida, but spending most of his childhood in Haiti, Toussaint did not pick up baseball until his teenage years. He has picked up the game rather quickly with mid-90s velocity on his fastball, picking up his second win of the season Friday.

Cougars manager Mark Grudzielanek has seen Toussaint progress in each start with the Cougars and thought Friday’s outing was the best he’s looked in a Cougars uniform.

“Control is huge with him,” Grudzielanek said of Toussaint. “He showed tonight that he’s understanding the game, he’s getting ahead of guys and throwing strikes.

Ethan Elias still identifies himself as a right-handed pitcher for the Normal CornBelters on his Twitter bio, but he’s been out of independent ball and in the Cougars’ rotation since April. Originally a 22nd-round draft pick of the Cubs in 2011, the 22-year old from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization after spending 2014 with Normal and entered Friday with a 5-3 record and 3.12 ERA in 52 innings. How an in-house game brightened weekend I’m losing my patience.

It began in the late morning of June 12, when I had four games canceled because of rain. The only positive was that I received the news well before I got dressed and departed.

On June 13, I spent close to six hours at four baseball fields, but only took the field once, calling three pitches before canceling the game because of lightning.

Then it rained overnight and into Sunday morning.

I suspected I would get an email stating that my four games at Fifth Third Ballpark would be canceled.

Unfortunately, it came.

What a miserable, waste of a weekend. Thirteen rainouts in three days. I suddenly felt the urge to eject Tom Skilling and kick dirt on Jerry Taft.

I was just backing out of my driveway with my family, on the way to church, when my phone rang.

“Chris,” my assignor said.

“Despite all the rain, there was one game that slipped

Can you do it?” he asked.

“What time?”

“10:15.”

“It’s 10:20 now,” I laughed.

“Yeah, I know, but they just called. They’ll understand.”

So I had my family switch into another car and to go to Mass, while I changed my clothes and made the short trip to the Sugar Grove Sports Complex to work a majors level (11 and 12 year olds) recreational game. The infield is a gravellike substance, so I wasn’t surprised the field was playable despite all the rain.

I quickly learned theses players, coaches and fans aren’t used to seeing a welldressed umpire, especially one who celebrated his 21st birthday a long time ago.

Often, teens work these

games as an introduction to umpiring and apparently they don’t dress the part.

As I approached the field I heard one of the players ask a teammate, “Do you think he umpires the Cubs games?”

That made me smile.

The kids played with enthusiasm, and the game went back and forth for the first four innings until the home team had a couple of big innings to earn the victory.

At this level, you have to instruct the kids when to get in the batter’s box to hit, and especially remind the teams to hustle on and off the field in between innings.

It’s quite different than working the more advanced games, but having not done one of these games in a while, it was a nice change of pace.

After the game, a bunch of players gave me fist bumps and several called me “the best umpire ever.” I thanked them for playing hard and wished them best of luck for the remainder of the season.

I’ve mentioned before that

one of the reasons I umpire is to give something back to the game. This was an instance where I did it, without really realizing it at the time.

I know many of my fellow umpires who are reading this primarily only work high school, college and elite travel baseball. I invite you to get out there and work one of these lower level, recreational in-house games.

The pace may be slower, the play may not be as good, but the enthusiasm of the kids, playing a sport they love, is a breath of fresh air.

Plus, when you show up dressed professionally and call the game that same way, the kids feel extra special.

I know those kids made me feel special. They also helped me forget about another wet weekend.

Rosary offering summer athletic camps

Former Waubonsee Community College baseball coach Dave Randall recently was inducted into the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference’s Hall of Fame in a ceremony at Waubonsee’s Academic and Professional Center ballroom.

Randall, a Kaneland alumnus, coached the Chiefs to 895 career victories in 37 seasons.

He ranks second on the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III all-time wins list and had the second-longest tenure among all NJCAA Division III coaches upon stepping down after the 2014 season.

Randall was named ISCC Coach of the Year six times during his tenure and finished second (1996), seventh (2010), third (2013) and fourth (2014) in the NJCAA Division III World Series.

Randall was worked as Waubonsee’s athletic manager since 1984. His previous hall of fame inductions include those for the Illinois Baseball Coaches Association (2002) and NJCAA Region IV (2005).

In other ISCC honors, Waubonsee volleyball coach Steve Kish was named the ISCC’s Female Sports Coach of the Year after leading the team to its first conference title, Region IV title and a berth in NJCAA Division II nationals last fall.

Five Chiefs student-athletes shared the ISCC’s Dick Durrant Award for academic excellence: softball player Abby Foulk, tennis players Joseph Runkle and Cara Lenhardt, volleyball player Shayna Tucek and baseball player Payton Klaas.

Lenhardt and Tucek are Kaneland graduates.

Concerts in the Park

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – The Fox Valley Academy and Philharmonic will perform its annual “American Pops Summer Symphony” concert at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, June 28, at the Peg Bond Pavilion in Batavia.

The mayors of Aurora, Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles will conduct the American classic “Stars and Stripes Forever” during the concert. Residents of all Fox Valley-area towns are encouraged to attend the concert and cast a vote for their favorite Fox Valley mayor. The winner will take home the “Golden Baton Award,” according to a news release.

The concert will include other favorites, such as Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture,” which will be performed with real cannons; Copland’s “Hoe Down;” and Morton Gould’s “Variations on When Johnny Comes Marching Home.”

The performance also will include a medley of Armed Forces service tunes.

The Philharmonic will invite veterans and family members in the audience to stand and be recognized for serving

Choosing right fertilizer an important step The community plot where Mary Ann and I have our vegetable garden at Peck Road and Route 38 in Geneva does not have great soil. It is all clay.

I’m convinced our plot is located where a field stone barn stood because small rocks are constantly coming to the surface.

Last week we uncovered the top of a broken medicine bottle that may have contained medicine for the farm animals. In the plot to the east of us – just 15 short feet away – the soil is beautiful, black loamy lusciousness.

We are jealous!

Over the last three seasons, we have been trying to improve the soil by working in mulched leaves, straw, chicken manure, and horse manure; burying overgrown zucchini; and planting a six-by-six area with an oat and pea cover crop. Each fall or spring the city plows under the plot and brings up more clay soil. Aaaargh. So, while we try and use organic matter for the most part, we still supplement with fertilizer.

If your garden has some of the same characteristics as ours, here are a few

The basics. “N” is for nitrogen, “P” for phosphorus, and “K” for potash (potassium). Nitrogen promotes healthy foliage; phosphorus develops strong roots and promotes fruit growth; and potash (potassium) is for overall plant health. A fertilizer labeled 10-10-10 contains 10 percent nitrogen, 10 percent phosphorus, and 10 percent potash (potassium) and is a balanced fertilizer.

To get your garden off to a good start, till the soil to a depth of six to 10 inches and add organic matter such as compost, humus, worm castings or well-composted manure. Organic matter improves the structure and nutrients of the soil. When we plant onion sets, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, brussel sprouts and kohlrabi transplants, we use a starter fertilizer such as 5-10-5, high in phosphorus, to encourage healthy root development.

Once established, leafy vegetables like Swiss chard, lettuce, kale and spinach benefit from a fertilizer that is high in nitrogen. Tomatoes, onions, garlic and peppers all benefit from a side dressing of a balanced fertilizer at the appropriate time; e.g., approximately one tablespoon of granular fertilizer worked into the soil around the root zone of the tomato plant once the fruit is the size of a golf ball.

Be sure to locate the NPK percentages on the package when you purchase fertilizer to make sure you are applying the proper fertilizer to achieve the desired results. Always apply water soluble fertilizer when the soil is moist so the roots don’t burn.

Read and follow all label directions.

Some day, the plots that directly surround plot 23 will be jealous of our soil!

Colorblindness is most often an inherited condition Dear Doctor K: Why are some people colorblind?

Dear Reader: People who are colorblind are unable to see colors the way most people do.

True colorblindness, in which everything appears black, gray or white, is very rare. More often, “colorblind” people have trouble distinguishing colors from one another.

Light that enters our eyes is focused by the lens to fall on the back of the eye – the retina. Within the retina are seven million cone cells. These specialized cells contain chemicals, called photopigments, that react to different wavelengths in light. The color of light is determined by its wavelength. Photopigments respond to blue, green or red light. Colorblindness occurs when the eye either lacks certain photopigments, or when these pigments do not work as they should.

Most people who are colorblind inherit the condition. Rarely, a condition that develops later in life causes colorblindness. Most people who inherit the condition are not even aware of it until another person questions their ability to identify color. Sometimes colorblindness is revealed only during color vision testing.

Symptoms of colorblindness

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff depend on the type of cone cells affected: Red-green colorblindness.

In the most common type of colorblindness, people cannot distinguish green from red. That is, some people see red objects as being green, and other people see green objects as being red. It occurs when either the red or green cone cells are missing or are not working properly.

Blue-yellow colorblindness.

This occurs when blue cone cells are missing or not working properly. People with this type of colorblindness see blue as green and may find it difficult to distinguish yellow or red from pink.

Complete colorblindness. True colorblindness is when everything appears in shades of black, gray and white. It occurs when none or only one type of cone cell works properly.

In the United States, about seven percent of men and 0.4 percent of women have red-green color blindness. In other words, more than 10 times as many men as women are colorblind. Why is

this? It’s because the genes that are defective in colorblindness are located on the X chromosome.

Women have two X chromosomes. So even if they inherit one X chromosome for colorblindness, they won’t have colorblindness.

The normal color genes on the other X chromosome compensate for the defective genes on their first X chromosome.

Unlike women, men have only one X chromosome. So if their X chromosome contains defective color genes, they will be colorblind.

Inherited colorblindness cannot be “fixed.” But special corrective lenses can help people with red-green colorblindness to see color more accurately.

And smartphone apps (for Apple or Android) can help to identify color and shades of color.

Here’s how they work: Suppose a sign has red letters on a green background. The phone recognizes this, and changes the red letters to a color that a colorblind person can see on a green background.

Learn what to eat, when to eat, how much to eat and what not to eat. Couple this with an active and regular exercise program and you will maintain a healthy and attractive body.

It would be helpful if you and a parent could visit your family doctor who could recommend a registered dietitian to help you with your new eating plan. Plan to lose about four pounds a month and not an ounce more.

Many players would immediately lead back the club four – return partner’s suit. Here, though, South takes the trick and plays another diamond to assure his contract. When West is in with his diamond ace, if he shifts to a heart, declarer plays low from the dummy.

First, East should tally the high-card points. The dummy has 10, East holds nine and South has 15-17. That leaves only 4-6 for West. Also, East should realize that if South had the diamond ace, he would have cashed that card before taking the diamond finesse. So, playing back a club cannot work.

Instead, East should set his sights on three hearts and two diamonds. But if he makes the “normal” lead of the heart queen, the contract still succeeds. East must think outside the deck and shift to his heart two.

South takes the trick and drives out West’s diamond ace, but as long as West now leads his remaining heart, the defenders defeat the contract.

Slow down your play and consider all of the possibilities.
