Leno, Hanna set to perform during Paramount Theatre’s 2015-16 season KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – Paramount Theatre president and CEO Tim Rater announced Monday the lineup of live music acts, comedians and performances to hit the Paramount stage during the theater’s 2015-16 season, beginning in August.

The unveiled acts include Jay Leno, Jack Hanna, Peter Cetera, Frank Caliendo, Terry Fator, Under the Streetlamp, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, Josh Turner and The Second City, to name a few.

Soon after Donny and Marie return to the Paramount to perform their Vegas show (Aug. 12 through 16), the theater’s 84th season will launch with its Season Kick Off-Party fundraiser on Aug. 21.

At the event, guests will sample Aurora-area food vendors, peruse silent-auction prizes and enjoy a cash bar in the newly renovated Meyer Ballroom, across the street from the theater. Following the party is the return of the “Happy Together Tour” at 8 p.m., with a lineup that will brings classic radio back to life with The Grassroots, Mark Lindsay from Paul Revere and The Raiders, The Buckinghams, The Cowsills, The Association and Flo and Eddie.

Paramount’s 2015-16 Broadway musical series was announced in March, and will include “Oklahoma!,” “A Christmas Story – The Musical,” “Hairspray – The Broadway Musical” and “West Side Story.”

Where did you grow up? A rural area outside the city limits of Columbus, Ohio.

Who would play you in the movie of your life? Meryl Streep First job? At a music store in Columbus.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? When I was 10, I wanted to drive a Kroger grocery store truck. Then, I became a musician.

I studied piano and pipe organ for a degree in ministry of music, and I played for 15 years.

Seeger songfest brings fans to Geneva church

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – When Jim Scott tuned up his guitar and sang, “To everything – turn, turn turn – there is a season – turn turn turn,” with audience participation, it felt like he was channeling the late troubadour Pete Seeger.

Scott played a Pete Seeger Songfest on Saturday at the Unitarian Universalist Society Church in Geneva to an audience of about 60. He played “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” and “If I Had a Hammer,” also performing his own original songs between Seeger’s. Scott promoted audience participation the same way Seeger used to, by calling out the lyrics so everyone could sing them together.

Scott said he knew Seeger for about 40 years, half of Seeger’s performing life. A political activist known as a pioneer of contemporary folk music, Seeger died at age 94 in 2014.

Between songs, Scott spoke about Seeger’s life and how his career with the folk group The Weavers was cut short during the McCarthy Era of the 1950s.

Seeger was called to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1955 – and although he did not cooperate, he also did not invoke the Fifth Amendment, Scott said. It was not until 1962 that Seeger’s prison sentence for contempt was successfully appealed, he said.

“Because I’m an admirer,” Pierce said.

“I love folk music,” added Gloria Bradsaw of North Aurora.

Maryanne Kiser and Guy Todnem, both of Naperville, also came to the concert.

“I’m a real Pete Seeger fan from way back,” Kiser said.

Todnem said he was seeing a return to the social issues Seeger sang about.

“It all seems timeless now,” Todnem said. “I love his music.”

Julie Riffle and Thom Thomas, both of Wasco, said they wanted to hear Seeger’s and Scott’s music, as well.

“Jim Scott wrote songs for our hymnal,” Thomas said.

Marion Robbins of Winfield said she has been a Seeger fan for years. Robbins said she met Seeger when he came to Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, to play for the school’s convocation, then came and sat on the floor with students – next to her – and gave another concert that afternoon.

“Then he went into town that evening to a local pub to sing, too,” Robbins said.

Aldermen approve Gunderson as information systems director

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles City Council unanimously approved Monday a city leader’s recommendation to appoint Larry E. Gunderson as the new director of information systems.

The council at its regular meeting voted, 10-0, in favor of City Administrator Mark Koenen’s recommendation to appoint Gunderson to director.

“We conducted a comprehensive search and I am confident Larry Gunderson has the knowledge and the vision to lead the city’s Information Systems Department,” Koenen wrote in a news release issued Mon-

day afternoon. “I know he will continue to provide creative approaches that best support our operations and citizen interactions with the city.”

Gunderson attended the Monday meeting and thanked the aldermen for the Larry E. opportuniGunderson ty after the vote.

Gunderson has more than 25 years of experience in information technology, including managing technical teams, working as an IT consultant and serving the city of Naperville for 20 years, four of which as

the city’s chief information officer, according to his resume.

Gunderson previously worked at RJN Group in Wheaton as director of information technology. He will replace Peggy Forster, the city’s retiring information systems director.

Ward 1 Alderman Dan Stellato and Ward 4 Aldermen Jo Kreiger thanked Forster for her 37 years of service to the city. Koenen also thanked Forster in the news release.

Gunderson’s first day working for St. Charles will be June 22, where he will work with Forster until her last day, June 30, Koenen wrote in his recommendation for Gunderson’s appointment.

alagattolla@shawmedia.com Alex Tyler said some of his greatest childhood memories involved water and swimming pools. Tyler, the owner of Goldfish Swim School in St. Charles, said he hopes today’s kids can feel safe and comfortable around the water and have a positive experience, as well.

“It’s about having fun in the water,” Tyler said.

With most kids out of school for the summer and warmer weather on the way, local swimming pools likely will be popular destinations. Tyler’s swim school, which is at 3455 Legacy Blvd. in St. Charles, offers lessons aimed at safety. Also, local park districts employ many lifeguards to patrol their facilities.

Park district officials said the lifeguards monitor the areas and intervene if necessary.

Although he said the goal isn’t scaring kids and parents, Tyler said there can be danger for those who don’t know how to swim. Not all pools have teams of lifeguards like the park districts’ facilities.

Tyler said he was inspired by the creation of the Pauly D Foundation, which was launched to raise awareness about child drowning and educate others about the importance of water safety. The foundation was created in honor of Paulino F. DelleGrazie, who was 4 years old when he died last year after he drowned in a local country club pool. Tyler said Paulino was supposed to start swimming lessons at Goldfish, and the lessons would have started two days after the incident.

“The whole staff at Goldfish was really affected by that,” Tyler said.

He said lessons can help kids feel comfortable in the water, and the sessions are most effective when they are ongoing, so the information is retained.

Swimming can take place at clubs, backyard pools and open bodies of water. The largest concentration of swimmers in this area likely would be at a water park or park district pool.

The St. Charles Park District operates the Otter Cove Aquatic Park at 3615 Campton Hills Road and the Swanson Pool at Pottawatomie Park at 8 North Ave. The Batavia Park District features Harold Hall Quarry Beach at 400 S. Water St. in Batavia. In Geneva, there is the Sunset Pool at 710 Western Ave. and the Mill Creek Pool at 39W125 S. Mill Creek Drive.

Rosie Fasching, the St. Charles Park District’s recreation supervisor, said at Otter Cove, there could be about 20

lifeguards on duty at any time.

At Swanson, there will be about 14 on duty. All lifeguards are certified, she said, and most, if not all, are high school and college students. She said lifeguards perform at least one save every day.

“It can be someone who is shorter, or younger children, who start to go to that deeper depth where they are unable to touch,” she said, referring to their feet not being able to touch the bottom of the pool. Also, she said, patrons might be disoriented after coming off a slide and forget where the stairs are.

She said lifeguards will watch over a zone, and – if they observe someone breaking a rule – they might whistle to get the patron’s attention.

Mickey Boyle, the facility manager at both Sunset and Mill Creek pools in Geneva, said there can be 22 lifeguards “on chair” at any time at Sunset. Mill Creek, a much smaller pool, will have three to five lifeguards, which he said is “more than ample.”

Fasching and Boyle both said the lifeguards are trained to recognize a person in distress in 10 seconds and respond within 20 seconds. Boyle said lifeguards must be able to swim a certain distance; have to tread water for five minutes, including two minutes with their hands above the water; and they must be able to retrieve a 10-pound brick in waters that are 12 feet deep.

Boyle said rescues in Geneva occur on a regular basis, such as children who might wander into water that is a little too deep. A couple of years ago, he said, a lifeguard was on break and eating her lunch in the concessions area when she saved a patron from choking.

He said those who are concerned about safety when they visit smaller pools should check on whether the lifeguards there are trained. Otherwise, he said, they might be pool attendants.

Also, he said, it’s important someone should provide supervision for children.

Boyle said there also are drills conducted on a regular basis. Management will put mannequins in the water and use a stopwatch to determine how quickly a lifeguard makes a rescue. He said it’s a way to make sure “that someone hasn’t become complacent on the chairs.”

Ideally, Boyle said, visitors won’t even notice the lifeguards. The idea, he said, is to allow patrons to enjoy their visit, saying that “for the most part, people come in, and they are expecting, and receiving, a safe environment.” He said effective lifeguards can provide that.

“We instill in our staff that the best lifeguards aren’t waiting for something to happen,” Boyle said. “They’re preventing something from happening.”

BATAVIA – Jeremy Frazer didn’t mind the lower-than-normal temperatures on Sunday as he ran along the Fox River as part of the “Answers for Emmett” event at the Batavia Riverwalk to benefit the Sudden U n e x - On the Web plained Death in Childh o o d Foundation.

“Answers for Emmett” is named in honor of Emmett Frank of North Aurora, who died in his sleep on Oct. 15, 2013, when he was 16 months old. Last year’s event raised $70,000 for the Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood Foundation to increase awareness of sudden, unexpected

deaths in childhood; fund research into the causes and prevention of such deaths; and advocate for the needs of affected families.

This was the second year of the event, which featured a 5K run and a youth run, as well as a silent auction and raffles. Frazer and his family also participated in the event last year.

“The cause really spoke to our hearts,” he said.

With a time of 16 minutes and 29 seconds, Sean Clark, 35, of Berwyn, was the overall male winner in the 5K. He liked the cool conditions.

“The cooler weather was really good for running,” he said. “It’s for a good cause, and it’s family-friendly. My sister is friends with Emmett’s family.”

Jeff Frank, Emmett’s father, said he was pleased with the turnout at the event, despite the cool conditions.

“If it was a bit warmer, it would have made a difference,” he said.

He estimated the event raised more than $50,000.

After the death of their son, Jeff Frank and his wife wanted to help raise awareness about SUDC. “I never had heard about it,” Jeff Frank said. “Not too

Hastert to appear in federal court

Dennis Hastert is scheduled to appear Thursday in a federal court in Chicago on charges he violated banking laws and lied about it to the FBI. Hastert, who served for 20 years as U.S. representative of the 14th Congressional District, was charged last week with structuring cash withdrawals of $952,000 to evade currency reporting laws and lying to the FBI about it.

Hastert is accused of paying a man identified as Individual A to keep silent that Hastert had sexually abused him years ago, when the former speaker was a high school teacher and the individual was a student, the Washington Post is reporting.

According to the charges, Hastert’s bank withdrawals were connected to payments of $3.5 million as compensation for Hastert’s unstated “misconduct” against that person – and for the former speaker’s actions to be kept a secret.

After the charges became public, Wheaton College dropped the former speaker’s name from the J. Dennis Hastert Center for Economics, Government, and Public Policy.

“The college has redesignated the Center as the Wheaton College Center for Economics, Government, and Public Policy at this time,” according to a statement posted on its website, www.wheaton.edu. The Christian college also announced Hastert’s resignation from the board of advisers to the center that used to bear his name.

In a news release, State Rep. Keith Wheeler, R-Oswego, said the allegations against Hastert made for “a very sad day for the people of Kendall County, the state of Illinois and our entire nation.”

“Our thoughts should be with all of the families that may be directly or indirectly affected as the legal process takes its proper course,” Wheeler stated in the release.

BATAVIA – The Batavia City Council on Monday approved a liquor license for the new owner of The RendezVu restaurant at 1 E. Wilson St. in downtown Batavia.

Jason Keller of Elgin plans to buy the restaurant and rename it Bulldog’s Cellar. Aldermen on Monday approved a class A tavern license for the business.

Keller had told city officials he envisions doing 80 percent in liquor sales and 20 percent in food sales.

He is buying the restaurant from current owner-chef Jerry Dunn. The RendezVu restaurant has been open in its current location since 2008 after originally opening in 2006.

The restaurant currently is open as The RendezVu, Keller said. He said the name change should occur in the next month, and plans

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles fire officials continue to investigate the cause of a fire that happened Saturday night at a multifamily complex, where two people had to be rescued.

Firefighters at 11:43 p.m. responded to a reported structure fire at 1742 Cumberland Green Drive and found heavy fire on the second floor of the apartment, with one person trapped on a balcony and another person in a wheelchair trapped in a bedroom.

Firefighters rescued the individuals – a father and his son – by using a portable ladder from a fire engine on the scene. The father was confined to a wheelchair.

St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said the father was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva for possible smoke inhalation, and the son declined transportation.

The fire caused an estimated $100,000 in damage to the structure and its contents.

“The damage was extensive,” Schelstreet said Monday. “In the bedroom area and hallway, the damage was significant.”

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in about 30 minutes. There were no injuries to the firefighters.

“The guys were moving quickly to make the rescues and get water on the fire,” Schelstreet said.

The fire was discovered by a resident of the apartment complex, who then called 911.

Schelstreet commended the resident who called 911.

“Good neighbors go a real long way,” he said.

The St. Charles Fire Department was assisted by the Geneva, Batavia, West Chicago and South Elgin fire departments. The Elburn and Fermilab fire departments provided coverage while St. Charles units were battling the fire.

China’s book burning THE WASHINGTON POST What is it like to be an independent writer in China today? “I’m so afraid,” said Hao Qun, succinctly.

One of the country’s most popular authors, Hao, who writes under the name Murong Xuecun, has seen his friends arrested, hounded and beaten by security forces since President Xi Jinping came to power in 2012 – most recently the writer and activist Wu Gan, who was arrested May 20.

“In China, you never know when they are coming to knock on your door, why they are coming and what is going to happen next,” said Hao. Hao is one of three writers and publishers who were recently hosted in the United States by the PEN American Center. In New York on Wednesday, they joined a protest outside BookExpo America, a major trade fair that this year allocated an official Chinese delegation more than 20,000 square feet of space for what amounted to a propaganda display featuring such works as “A Study of the Important Speeches Made by Secretary General Xi Jinping.”

A trade fair spokesman told the Associated Press it was important to accord Beijing “a seat at the table” because it “could have a positive impact on the future of publishing both at home and across the globe.”

The problem is that China’s real writers don’t have a seat at the table. Instead, they are being persecuted, censored and driven out of the country.

Xiaolu Guo, an award-winning novelist and filmmaker, left China a decade ago for London.

In the years before she left, she said, it was still possible for independent writers to

publish their books with regional or university presses.

But after her last two novels were proscribed, she gave up trying to publish in Chinese; she now writes in English and became a British citizen.

That hasn’t stopped the regime from harassing her: The Chinese Embassy in London, she said, once called her to demand she report on her writing plans.

A third member of the PEN delegation, Bao Pu, is a Hong Kong publisher who has issued works by banned mainland writers. But he and other independent publishers in the supposedly autonomous city state are under attack, too. The sole distributor of their books is being evicted from its warehouse facility, and editors who venture to the mainland are subject to arrest and prosecution.

Bao said the heightened repression reflects not only the policy of Xi, but also the increasing capabilities of China’s vast censorship bureaucracy. The regime has long maintained an Internet firewall to exclude sensitive content; it now blocks 16 of the world’s top 30 websites.

But more recently, the censors have managed to disable VPN networks that Chinese have used to get around the firewall, and they have gotten better at identifying and blocking writers who use pseudonyms or distribute their work on microblogs.

When Xi took office, Hao had 8.5 million followers of his four microblogs. Now, he said, he has only one account with a few thousand followers – his original blogs were blocked by the censors, as were seven others he has since launched.

“More topics can’t be discussed,” he said. “More friends are being arrested.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR True condition of labor market To the Editor: Picture this: Rich – a 46-yearold, middle-skilled worker with a wife and three kids – is laid off after 12 years at his job; he’s the sole breadwinner for his family.

Scrambling to make sure they can pay bills on time, Rich looks for work but finds nothing – for months. After earnestly looking for more than a year, Rich pauses his search for a month or two – perhaps he’s frustrated at the lack of jobs that he’s qualified for, or is faced with a new life circumstance that forced him to stop.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ official unemployment count, Rich isn’t actually unemployed.

Huh? Because he stopped looking for work, he doesn’t count under the BLS’s official U-3 number, which only counts

unemployed individuals who have actively looked for work in the past four weeks. Thus, unemployment numbers are artificially deflated – failing to give us the full story about who is actually out of a job.

In fact, the BLS currently uses six different measures to track unemployment in the U.S., including U-3. But U-3 fails to account for individuals like Rich – those who, after earnestly looking for work for months or years, have stopped looking altogether.

Sounds ridiculous, right? If we’re going to get individuals in Illinois like Rich back to work, let’s make sure he’s actually counted as being out of work.

I’m reminded again that when it comes to tackling a problem, the private sector understands something that government bureaucracy often doesn’t: If you can’t measure it accurately, you can’t improve it. We need to tell

the story of Rich and his family with real numbers – statistics that illustrate the real unemployment picture in America so we can work to fix it.

That’s why I have co-sponsored HR 1876, the Real Unemployment Calculation Act, which includes people like Rich in the official measure of the health of the economy. This gauge (U-5) would capture the Americans too exasperated by our slow economic growth to stay on the job hunt.

We need to make Washington face the true condition of the labor market and stop hiding behind artificially low unemployment numbers.

We can’t help get Rich back to work if we don’t notice that he’s unemployed. Let’s pass HR 1876 to make sure he’s not forgotten.

BATTLE TESTED Kaneland comes from behind to win regional title

But as they had done all postseason, the Knights fought back.

Kaneland erased an early deficit and held on for a 4-2 victory over the Spartans in the Class 3A Hampshire Regional championship Monday afternoon.

Sycamore ace Colan Treml opened the game by striking out the first three Kaneland batters – all looking – before the Spartans jumped out with two runs in the bottom of the first on RBI singles by Nate Gross and Brett Weaver.

“In the games we saw before this, it sort of prepared us,” Kaneland coach Brian Aversa said. “Burlington got us down early, Wheaton Academy put four on us in the first.

It was one of those things where it was sort of old hat.

We’re used to (being down early).”

Kaneland starter Matt O’Sullivan finished the day pitching six-plus innings, allowing just two hits after the first inning. He kept Sycamore off the scoreboard the rest of the way, then Steven Limbrunner got three straight outs in the bottom of the seventh for the save.

Coming into the game, the Spartans and Knights had six of their past seven games against each other be decided by one run – including Sycamore’s 1-0 win in the sectional championship last season.

For Kaneland, which won the Northern Illinois Big 12 East this season, it was a chance to prove itself after coming into the regional as the No. 4 seed.

Aversa said. “It’s the road you don’t want to travel, but we did it.”

Treml, who was able to start after the game was postponed from late last week, pitched six innings and allowed three earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts.

The Knights (23-12), who will play Belvidere North in a 2A Sycamore Sectional semifinal at 4 p.m. Wednesday, tied the game against the Spartans by scoring two in the top of the second – a double by Matt Rosko set up an RBI groundout by Danny Hammermeister and an RBI single by Jacob Violett.

After Violett opened the top of the fifth by getting hit by a pitch, pinch-runner River Dunne stole second and scored the go-ahead run on a double by Austin Wheatley.

“Coming into the game, I knew (Treml) had a really good curveball, so I tried to stay away from that and hit the fastball,” Wheatley said.

“That’s what I was looking

for, and I let my hands do the rest.”

The Spartans (24-11) allowed the Knights to score what turned out to be a valuable insurance run in the top of the sixth. Hammermeister reached on a throwing error by second baseman Austin Jacox, and pinch-runner Tyler Paulson stole second base and reached third on a passed ball.

Violett brought him home on a sacrifice fly to left field to put the Knights up, 4-2.

“It changes the game at the end, if you’re chasing one (run) instead of chasing two,” Sycamore coach Jason Cavanaugh said. “That was the kind of run that we gave up all

year.”

Sycamore got the first two batters to reach in the bottom of the seventh – Daniel Coovert was hit by a pitch and Cameron Godinsky singled to left field – before Limbrunner closed out the game for O’Sullivan.

The Spartans also had runners on second and third with no outs in the bottom of the fourth after a double by Weaver but couldn’t score.

“We had base runners on all day and we couldn’t score,” Cavanaugh said. “The inning that broke our backs was when we had second and third and nobody out and couldn’t score. You score one there, it’s a huge difference.”

A chopper over third by Schaumburg’s No. 9 hitter, Christian Spitelli, proved to be the only blemish to an otherwise perfect day for the senior southpaw and St. Charles North, as the North Stars cruised to a second straight regional title, beating Schaumburg, 7-0, in the Class 4A Schaumburg Regional championship.

Any other pitcher would have let the hit that ruined a perfect game get to him. But that’s not Wright.

He said after his complete-game performance that allowing the hit actually calmed him down a bit and let him focus on the big picture.

“You’re out there almost holding your breath on every pitch and it kind of got me back to my groove and hitting my spots,” Wright said.

“I don’t know if there was any certain point I knew it was going to be a special day.

I knew coming in that it was going to be a special day for North Star baseball and it was. To win a second straight regional title is huge for us.”

This North team, now 32-4, can say it is the only team in school history to win back-toback regional titles.

As dominant as Wright’s 64-pitch, one-hit shutout was Monday, a big help was the defense behind him. The Kansas State commit struck out four batters, with a large majority of his outs coming on ground balls to the left side of the infield.

and third baseman Luke Corcoran a total of 11 ground balls hit their way, ten of which were outs, with the only one getting by the chopper over Corcoran’s head.

North coach Todd Genke was extremely proud of the all-around effort from Wright, to good defense, hitting and base running.

Everything was present today for a North Stars team that has now won 18 straight games.

“Games are not easy to win come this time of the year,” Genke said. “We talk about hanging numbers on the press box and today we hung another one. did a lot of things well today and when we play well defensively, with the way Cory was rolling on the mound, that’s an awful tough combination.”

Wright improved to 9-0 on the mound and lowered his season ERA to an eye-popping 0.50.

Catcher Kyle Khoury gets a different view than any of Wright and, Monday, the “Cory-Khoury” connection was back to work.

“He makes it easy for me to do my job,” Khoury said of Wright. “He’s so good at hitting his spots that all I have to do is catch the ball. When he’s on the mound, we are a very confident team and it gives us that little swagger to go out and win games.”

Mettetal, whose diving grab and throw to first kept Wright perfect in the second inning, was busy all day, but that has something he has come to expect with Wright on the mound.

“Our whole team is comfortable when he’s out there,” Mettetal said. “He gets a lot of ground balls, which I like, so I just make sure to position myself, based on the pitch, where I think the ball is going to be hit. I actually envisioned that play happening right before it did. I made the play in my mind before it happened and I’m glad I helped.”

Wright had an two-run single in North’s four-run fourth inning, in which Tyler Madsen and Zach’s brother, Tyler Mettetal, also knocked in runs.

Panthers down Vikings in regional finals

By RUSSELL HODGES editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – After back-toback singles by pitcher Eric Orze and shortstop Nolan Jasinski, Glenbard North second baseman Nick Barrett launched a three-run homer off Geneva pitcher Ben Slattery to give the Panthers a three-run lead in the first inning.

That was all the Panthers needed, as the team went on to defeat Geneva, 3-1, in the Class 4A Geneva Regional championship Monday.

The No. 4 seed in the St. Charles East sectional, Glenbard North (24-10) will face top-seeded St. Charles North in the sectional semifinals Wednesday.

With a loss, the Vikings’ season and five-game winning streak came to an end.

Monday’s contest averaging 7.4 runs a game during its win streak. But Orze stymied Geneva’s offense, pitching a complete game and striking out seven batters, allowing just four hits and one run. He did not walk a single batter.

“He was fantastic,” Geneva coach Matt Hahn said of Orze.

“He threw all his pitches for strike. When you get down 3-0 early against a pitcher like that, it kind of takes you out of

it. We struggled to get guys on base early in the game.”

Despite giving up a threerun home run in the first inning, Slattery settled down and kept the Vikings in the game. The senior went five innings and struck out five batters while walking just one.

“Ben gave us a chance to win,” Hahn said. “That’s all you ask from your starting pitcher is to give you a chance to win and he did.”

Geneva cut the Panthers’ lead to two runs after designated hitter Mitchell Merges singled in the fifth inning and shortstop Vince MacDonald sacrificed to the pitcher to move Merges to second base.

Justin Soeldner then singled to bring Merges home and put the Vikings on the board.

But the one run was all the Vikings would muster, as Orze pitched the final two innings without allowing any

damage.

“We saw him pitch [on] Wednesday against Rolling Meadows,” Hahn said, “We knew we were going to have our hands full.”

Although Geneva’s season is over, Hahn praised the Vikings’ effort in the loss, adding that the defeat has no effect on what the team accomplished this season.

“Our kids were fantastic today,” Hahn said. “They didn’t back down. This one game does not define their season.

I’m just very proud of the entire group. Our seniors were fantastic all year ... great leadership out of all of them.”

Hahn also expressed optimism moving forward, saying he expects the team to be in a similar position to succeed next season.

“We hope to be in this game next year and come out on top,” Hahn said.

Obstacle stands in way of Knights’ state finals bid

APLE PARK – Three weeks ago, the Kaneland girls soccer team had never won so much as a regional tournament.

Now the Knights are a win away from the state tournament.

Kaneland faces Peoria Notre Dame at 5 p.m. today in a match of opposites in the Class 2A DeKalb Supersectional. The Knights are in their first supersectional, the Irish are in this round for the 16th time in 19 years.

Kaneland has an airtight defense that has surrendered just 15 goals this year. Notre Dame has a fierce offense.

Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said ever since knocking off longtime obstacle Rosary in the Rochelle Regional final, the team has

been very relaxed.

“I’m probably more tense and uptight than they are,” Parillo said. “Again, I’m the stupid coach who hasn’t told them they’re not supposed to be here. I think a lot of these teams maybe underestimated us. The looks on their faces, they were shocked when we were shaking hands at the end of the games. They were dumbfounded that this little podunk school made up of nine communities is advancing and they are not.

But they have heart and they deserve this.”

After beating Prairie Ridge, 2-1, in the Rockford Boylan Sectional semifinal, the Knights (19-3) beat Freeport, 1-0, on penalty kicks for the title Friday. Instead of the usual five, the teams needed 12 rounds of PKs to determine the winner.

Senior midfielder and cap-

tain Madison Jurcenko said since the team beat Rosary – the team that defeated them in the regional four of the past five years – the Knights have been relaxed.

“I think winning regionals was our main goal and everything after that is just bonus now because we’ve never done this,” Jurcenko said. “Not having that expectation on us is helping us because we go out there relaxed and whatever happens, happens.”

Parillo said the Knights also have an advantage playing at DeKalb. He said although they tend to struggle on football fields – Kaneland has its own devoted field that’s 80 yards wide – DeKalb’s field is almost as wide as their own and about 20 yards wider than the typical football field is when re-purposed for soccer.

There’s also the advantage of being 20 minutes away, as opposed to the roughly two hours the Irish (17-5-3) have to come.

Junior defender Gabby Cano said the team is ready for the challenge of facing an offense minded team.

Cano herself is relatively new to the back, being pressed into service after some injuries reduced the number of healthy defenders for the Knights.

Cano said she had been a center midfielder since she started playing club soccer when she was in the fourth grade.

“It’s different playing teams that we do in the regular season who don’t necessarily attack as much as Freeport did, or we expect Peoria to,” Cano said.

“Defense isn’t necessarily my position, but I love the

people I play with on defense and our strategy is team defense, but it really starts at the back line communicating up to everyone.”

Given the Knights’ cursed past – most of the losses to Rosary in the postseason came after beating the Royals in the regular season, not to mention were usually in overtime and on PKs – Parillo said the team deserves the success it is having.

“We’re happy to be here, but we’re not just happy to be here. We’re not satisfied with just the fact we’re here,” Parillo said. “All the heartbreak and heartache we’ve gone through the last 11 years here at Kaneland, coming so close in those regionals, losing in overtime, losing in overtime, going into PKs, losing in PKs. “We want more,” he said.

“These girls deserve this.”

Conant ends East’s season Batavia’s run ends

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@kcchronicle.com OSWEGO – After an upand-down season, the Batavia softball team put it all together to advance to a regional final for the first time in what coach Lupe Castellanos believed was seven years.

Naperville Central showed the Bulldogs just how far they still have to go Monday as the Redhawks beat Batavia, 11-1, in six innings, earning a regional title for the second straight year.

Redhawks right-hander Julie Kestas, retired the final 15 batters she faced in a row after giving up a run in the top of the first.

Batavia (19-17) center fielder Ryanne Rokos led off the game with a single to left and scored on a wild pitch from Kestas to give the Bulldogs the early lead.

But the Redhawks (25-8) offense helped their starter out, tagging Bulldogs starter Rachael Lovestrand (5-4) for two unearned runs in the home half of the inning.

With no one on and two away, senior Lisa Tassi reached on an error and came around to score on a double from catcher Abbey Place.

Place scored later in the inning on a single from Staci Stark, her first of three RBIs on the day.

Redhawks coach Andy Nussbaum singled out the response after going down early as being the key to the win.

“You never want to be behind in what amounts to Game 7 every tournament,” Nussbaum said. “You never want to be behind but to start it with nobody on and two outs, to get the rally going, that was huge in the first inning.”

Batavia threatened to tie the game early in the second inning, but with two runners in scoring position and nobody out, Kestas took over, getting the next three Bulldogs to pop out.

Castellanos said. “They’re a tough team and she’s a great pitcher. It’s hard to battle back when you’re facing somebody like that, that caliber of pitcher. I thought at the start of the game we had that energy and were there but once we got down she picked it up and got her energy going.”

Batavia made Kestas work in the first inning, as she threw 28 pitches, but she needed 15 or less in every inning afterwards.

“My rhythm came from the offense, for sure,” Kestas said.

“They had my back, and I was glad to see them bounce back in the first inning after I gave up that one run, which was a rough start. They gave me confidence which helped me get back in the groove.”

The Redhawks, bolstered by a dialed-in Kestas, scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to chase Lovestrand, who gave up eight runs on seven hits while her defense made three errors behind her in four innings.

Castellanos said he had no reason to take her out after the third inning and wanted Lovestrand to fight through the adversity for as long as she could.

“I wanted to leave her out there, have her battle through that,” Castellanos said. “She’s only a sophomore, so I think it’s important for them to get back out there on the mound when things aren’t going well and battle through. I thought she did a good job today.”

Batavia loses five senior starters to graduation in Rokos, Elyse Burns, Tara Zufan, Christina Karius and Natalie Offutt.

HOFFMAN ESTATES – Monday was a tough day for the batters on the St. Charles East softball team.

Conant, behind a near perfect effort from pitcher Sara Neuman, shut down the Saints’ offense as the Cougars beat East, 4-1, to win the Class 4A Conant Regional title.

Neuman threw to only 24 batters, three over the minimum in a seven-inning game.

The right-hander gave up one hit – a run-scoring triple by Maddie Candre in the second – struck out six and issued no walks. Conant errors allowed two other East batters to reach base.

“There’s just not too much to say other that it wasn’t our day,” East coach Kelly Horan said. “[Neuman] did a really nice job on us.”

“Neuman did a nice job and we just didn’t get the hits,” East’s Alex Latoria said. “She did not hit the same

Conant coach CathyAnn Smith was pleased the way Neuman was able to shut down a powerful East lineup.

“It was a great win to have against a tough hitting team so I’m pretty proud of my pitcher,” Smith said. “She worked hard on her movement and was able to keep their good hitters at bay.”

The Cougars (24-7) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Saints starting pitcher Jordan Hall gave up back-toback singles to Hailey Rothstein and Alissa Wachal.

Bihun drilled another single to left. On the throw-in from left field, the ball got away from the East infield, allowing Rothstein and Wachal to score.

The Saints (29-5) got a run back in their half of the inning on Candre’s triple that scored Jordan Hieber after she reached on an error.

The game was a scoreless duel for the next four innings.

Neuman retired 11 East batters in a row after Candre’s triple.

Hall kept the Cougars from scoring in the middle innings, but needed help from her defense in the fifth.

Hall’s luck ran out in the top of the seventh when she gave up a two-run double to Grzelak to make the score 4-1.

“I thought we had a great season,” Horan said of her squad that won the Upstate Eight Conference River Division crown. “I couldn’t be prouder of our kids for all the effort they have given me this year.”

CHARLESTON – Burlington Central senior Lucas Ege just wanted to defend his 300-meter hurdle crown.

He did that and then some.

Ege repeated as state champion in the 300 hurdles, won the 110-meter hurdles and provided enough of a boost to give the Rockets a second-place finish in the 4x400 relay, helping Burlington Central take second as a team at the Class 2A state meet Saturday at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium in Charleston.

“Since I won it last year, if I didn’t win it, I would have been super mad,” Ege said.

Not only did he win it again, he broke his own state record with a time of 37.10 seconds.

“I thought I was going slow,” laughed Ege, who won the 110 hurdles in 14.15. “I didn’t think I broke it until I saw the numbers.”

It marks the second straight season an area team has finished as runners-up in the 2A meet – Kaneland took second place in 2014.

It also is the Rockets’ best finish since they were second in 2001.

While Ege, a Stanford recruit, came into the day as the favorite to win the 300 hurdles, Kaneland sophomore pole vaulter Danny Walker just wanted to break his personal record.

Instead, he won a state championship.

Walker broke his preliminary mark by more than a foot to win the 2A state title with a pole vault of 14 feet, 9 inches.

“It’s a crazy feeling. I don’t know,” said Walker, whose previous best was 14-0 and had a mark of 13-6 in the preliminaries Friday. “It’s like those commercials with the Stanley Cup players – I don’t know, it’s just a great feeling. The one thing that hops into your mind is don’t be satisfied. Get after it again.”

After pitching eight innings of three-hit ball Wednesday, Kisch allowed three Spartan hits Monday. Sycamore never had more than one runner on base at a time, and no Spartan runner advanced past second base.

“It shows the determination and the type of person Emily Kisch is,” Rockets head coach Kyle Molik said. “Her character is above everyone.

She will put a team on her back and over the past two games has pitched fifteen innings of one-run ball.”

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Every profession has its special language. Doctors discuss broken legs with terms like femur or tibia. School teachers now talk about “core curriculum” while real estate brokers have to know about “land contracts” or “joint ventures.”

Collectors have to learn the descriptive words used in auction catalogs and ads like “attributed to,” “mint in the box,” “enhanced” or “pyro.” “Mint in the box” usually refers to a toy that was put away in the original box. So both the box and toy are in mint (perfect) condition. “Enhanced” is a jewelry or glass term that means the quality or color of the material has been improved by radiation, heating or other methods. “Pyro” is short for pyroglaze, used after the mid-1930s. Soda bottles often are identified with words or pictures written with this mixture. “Attributed to” means the painting, sculpture, vase or other artwork may be the work of an artist, but is unsigned. The seller can’t be positive it was made by a famous English pottery like Minton or a designer like Christopher Dresser, but it looks like it was. Auction catalogs have a page of definitions, explaining why captions say things are “painted by,” “attributed to,” “from the school of,” “replaced,” “restored” or “in the style of.”

Another list explains the differences in ways to bid, rules of shipping, and extra charges like “buyers’ premiums.” These terms help to avoid misunderstandings and legal problems. Read the front and back parts of catalogs or online listings before you bid, or use an auction to sell your collection. *** Q: During the 1980s, I purchased a funky Art Deco style vanity table, 60

inches high by 58 inches wide. It’s burled walnut, deeply curved with outswept ends and a large semi-circular mirror.

The bottom is tapered and sits on a sloping rectangular base. There are 4 short off-center drawers and one has a label that reads “Joerns Brothers, Wisconsin.”

It’s time to part with it, so could you tell me what I could get for my hip vanity?

A: Joerns Brothers Furniture was founded in 1889 in St. Paul, Minnesota, by three brothers, Charles, Paul and Frederick Joerns. The company relocated to Sheboygan, Wis. in 1905. In 1927, a fire caused the company to relocate to Stevens, Point, Wis. The company made elegant and elaborate bedroom sets but struggled in the 1950s. The company changed its focus and started to make college dormitory furniture and then hospital beds, cabinets and lifts, which is its specialty today. The company has been called Joerns Healthcare since 1983.

Your vanity was made about 1930 and could sell for about $450 if it’s in good condition. *** Q: I have Lincoln Logs set No. 3C in the original cylindrical cardboard container with tin lid. The set originally contained 129 pieces, but a few pieces are missing. The box reads “Made by Playskool” and has two patent dates, 1,351,086 and 2,012,160. What are these patents for? What is the set worth?

A: U.S. Patent 1,351,086 was granted to architect and toy designer John Lloyd Wright of Chicago in 1920 for his design of a “toy cabin construction” set made of notched “logs.” He was the son of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The sets were sold by John Wright’s company, the Red Square Co., in 1918. (A red square was a mark used by his father.) The company name later became the John Lloyd Wright Toy Co. The name “Lincoln Logs” was registered in 1923. The other

The statue is about eight feet tall and is in excellent condition. It was originally installed on top of the County Courthouse in 1909. When the courthouse was torn down, the statue was preserved by the historical society. I know there are statues like this on courthouses in many part of the country, but I haven’t been able to determine their origin. What can you tell me about them?

A: Lady Justice is one of the most common statues displayed on courthouses. It’s sometimes called Themis, an ancient Greek goddess. “Blind Justice,” a similar figure wearing a blindfold, was made beginning in the 1700s. These statues have been made by various sculptors since early Greek and Roman times, so unless the statue has a maker’s mark, it’s impossible to tell who made it. *** Q: We’re organizing personal items to assess to determine if they can be sold on a website. The items range from a collection of Hermes scarves and Chanel and other high-end purses to antique and vintage stemware and glass items collected over a 50-year span. We don’t know where to begin. Help!

A: Look for websites and online shops that sell things similar to yours to get an idea of their value. Places that sell things also buy them. But remember, shop owners have to make money on the sale, too, so you can expect to get about half to one-third of what they can sell the items for. Things that are worth more than $500 could sell at an auction. If you consign something to an auction, be sure you know what the seller’s commission is and what other costs are involved. *** Tip: A way to date a package or poster-black and one other color were used on lithographed packaging in the 1890s but four-color lithography was not used until about 1930. *** Take advantage of a free listing for your group to announce events or to find antique shows, national meetings and other events. They are expecting a baby soon.

Our younger daughter lives with us, and she’s planning on moving in with her boyfriend.

We’re an old married couple, and we’re not sure how to treat our daughters’ boyfriends.

However, “Gerald” is the father of our new grandchild, and we think of him as family. “Joel” is a great guy who is in love with our younger daughter and vice versa, so we think of him as family, too.

We stumbled through the holidays not knowing if we should get gifts for them. Joel is having a birthday soon. Should we get him a gift? We want to bring the boyfriends into our family and treat them like our children, but we don’t know if we’re overstepping our bounds. Can we start treating them like sons and wait for them

Lifestyle changes help relieve discomfort of hot flashes Dear Doctor K: What can I do to relieve uncomfortable hot flashes?

Dear Reader: Yesterday I discussed new research showing that menopausal hot flashes can last for much longer than the “several years” the textbooks say they are supposed to last.

We are beginning to understand why women in menopause (and sometimes for years after) get hot flashes. There is a center in the brain that is constantly measuring the inner temperature of our bodies. For example, body temperature rises on a hot day, or when we exercise.

When the brain center thinks the body needs to cool off, it causes little blood vessels near the skin to open wide. You get red and feel hot, and then your body heat is released into the air near the skin. The brain center also activates glands that make sweat: Wet skin also releases heat from the body.

Before menopause, the brain center sends signals cooling the body when it sees your temperature rising just half a degree.

During menopause, the brain center sends out these cooling signals when the body’s temperature rises even less than half a degree.

So you get hot flashes because the brain thinks you need to cool off.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff There are things you can do to make hot flashes less severe or less frequent. Here are some lifestyle changes to start with: • Drink a glass of cool water at the beginning of a hot flash to lessen discomfort.

• Drink six to eight glasses of water per day.

• Avoid caffeine and alcohol.

• Cut down on red wine, chocolate and aged cheeses. They contain a chemical that can trigger hot flashes.

• Plunge your hands in cold water and pat it on your face, neck and chest when a hot flash starts.

• Begin deep-breathing exercises at the beginning of a hot flash to help nip it in the bud.

• Wear loose, comfortable cotton clothing whenever possible.

• Dress in layers. Remove some clothing if you suddenly feel hot.

• Don’t smoke. Smoking can make hot flashes worse.

• Keep your house and office cool.

• At night, use lightweight blankets. Remove them as needed.

• Regularly engage in vigorous exercise.

If lifestyle changes are not enough, consider hormone (estrogen) therapy – the smallest dose that relieves your hot flashes.

Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of hormone replacement therapy in your case, as they can be quite different from one woman to another. Also ask your doctor whether you need to take progestin hormones.

Other types of medications can be used for hot flashes. One example is antidepressants. Venlafaxine (Effexor) and paroxetine (Paxil) are often the first choice.

Gabapentin (Neurontin) is an anticonvulsant drug that is moderately effective in treating hot flashes. And clonidine (Catapres) is a blood pressure medication that can relieve hot flashes in some women.

The herbal remedy black cohosh had been previously promoted as a treatment for hot flashes, but more recent research reports that it works no better than a placebo.

I’m 18 and recently graduated from high school. I dated Antonio several times during my senior year, and I liked him a lot. We weren’t serious, so he also sometimes went out with Angel, his old girlfriend that he broke up with to start dating me.

The day after graduation, this girl called me and told me that if I continued dating Antonio she would be forced to “kick my tail.” This really made me upset, and I told Antonio to tell Angel to start acting like a lady, not a prizefighter.

I was totally surprised when he told me that he thought the idea of two girls fighting over him would be a real turn-on. He then said he would continue dating only the winner of the fight.

I was stunned by his attitude and haven’t talked to him since.

I’ve taken all three, hated every minute of every class, and had to study like crazy to barely get a C in each one of them.

I’m going to be a senior in September, and I dread taking any more advanced math classes. My dad still insists that I take calculus, but I’m totally against taking it, and I told him so. So now he says he will have a meeting with my counselor to make sure I’m enrolled in calculus. I want to be an elementary school teacher, and I doubt that I would be a better teacher if I took calculus.

Dear Nameless: Having a meeting with your counselor is an excellent idea by your father, but it is necessary that you be included. I realize that I am an outsider, but I do have experience as a high school principal, and my advice to your father is to allow his daughter and her counselor to decide on the classes that will suit her best.

Tell your father that the gifted genius Albert Einstein was a failure in math when he was a schoolboy, and he did quite well later on.

If a bridge player knows about endplays (this week’s theme), he will not labor long over today’s deal. How should South play in four spades after West leads the diamond jack?

Some players with that North hand would respond four spades.

They would mention the Law of Total Tricks, saying it recommends that with a 10-card fit, bid to the 10-trick level. But that applies when your side cannot have the normal high-card values for game or when it is a competitive auction. Here, South could have 19 or 20 points, and the auction is not competitive. Also, North has a balanced hand with a lot of losers. I think two spades is the correct response.

If West had led a club (unthinkable from his actual holding), the defenders could have taken three tricks in the suit and gotten off play with a spade or diamond. Then declarer would have had to find the heart queen. But now he does not need to guess its location.

He wins with his diamond ace (top of touching honors from the closed hand), draws trumps, cashes his diamond king, and exits with a club.

The defenders take three tricks in that suit, but what can the one on lead do next?
