One injured after car goes into Fox River in N. Aurora

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – North Aurora police continue to investigate the circumstances that led to a car ending up in the Fox River early Wednesday morning.

North Aurora firefighters took one person to Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora with minor injuries after responding to a water rescue at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. Two cars were involved in the incident, but police continue to investigate how one of the cars ended up in the Fox River, North Aurora Deputy Police Chief Scott Buziecki said.

North Aurora firefighters took one person to Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora with minor injuries after they responded to a water rescue at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. The vehicle was removed from the river Wednesday afternoon. and North Aurora Island Park. A compact car went through a fence and into the Fox River, North Aurora Fire Chief Ryan Lambert said.

“A Kane County Sheriff officer was driving by, and somebody flagged him

down, saying that his car just went into the water,” Lambert said. “They called us for a water rescue.”

When firefighters arrived on the scene, the two occupants already were out of the vehicle, Lambert said.

The department took one

person to Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora with injuries that were not life-threatening, Lambert said.

Lambert said the occupants were able to get out of the car after it went into the Fox River. Lambert didn’t know if the injured person was the driver or the passenger. One of the occupants dragged the other occupant out of the car, he said.

The car was towed late Wednesday afternoon from the Fox River.

Hickory Knolls’ annual Firefly Festival to light up night

Flowers, sure. Fresh fruit, of course. And fireflies, definitely. A backyard brimming with dozens of flashing points of light is just one way Mother Nature lets us know summer is really and truly here.

What better place to discover and capture – quite literally – this quintessential summer experience than at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center’s annual Family Firefly Fest. Held from 7:30 to 9 p.m. June 26, this celebration of all things firefly will shed new light on this luminous insect. Along with fun-filled crafts and flash-y games, this year’s celebration promises to be an illuminating evening.

“Fireflies are like nature’s own fireworks,” said Pam Otto, manager of nature programs and interpretive services at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center. “It’s one of the reasons we hold the fest in late June every year.

It’s like getting a jump on the Fourth of July.”

The evening kicks off inside the center, where staff will provide some background information designed to entertain and enlighten people about these bright little critters via unique and easy-to-apply facts. For instance, did you know that fireflies’ glow comes from special light-producing organs called photic organs?

And that fireflies use this light to “talk” to each other?

“The lights are part of the fireflies’ mating ritual,” Otto said. “Male fireflies are usually more mobile so they’re the ones that fly around. Females generally sit and watch, looking for a flash pattern that is specific to their species. So if you see a firefly sitting still, chances are, it’s a female.”

Along with learning how to tell a boy firefly from a girl firefly, participants also will discover there are different species of fireflies in the area – some large, some small, some in between. And then there are the fireflies that are a little, well, unscrupulous in their own flamboyant way.

“We add a little intrigue to the program when we talk about the Femme Fatale firefly,” Otto said. “This one uses their flash pattern to lure in small, unsuspecting males, who they then devour.”

Before that happens, though, Family Firefly Fest attendees will have a chance to get an up close and personal look at nature’s nightlights. It’s a childhood rite of passage to make a bug jar in which to capture fireflies, and a craft session to create just such a container will take place before participants scamper around Hickory Knolls Discovery Center to see how many they can catch (and, later, release).

“Adults are really into this part of the program,” Otto said. “It’s a trip down memory lane. And the kids sometimes turn it into a bit of competition, based on what they’ve just learned. Some are out to catch only boy fireflies, others want the biggest

Not only does our hair become grayer as we get older, but some aging individuals also experience graying of their eyes. “Corneal arcus” (“arcus senilis”) is graying that develops in the form of an arc on the periphery of the cornea (the clear, dome-like covering over the front of the eye). Corneal arcus typically starts at the 6 and 12 o’clock positions on the cornea, but can eventually form a full ring. These partial arcs or full rings are composed primarily of lipids and cholesterol, but are not necessarily related to high blood cholesterol levels or heart disease.

This graying of the outer portion of the cornea is quite common among older adults and neither affects vision nor requires treatment.

P.S. In younger adults, high cholesterol is more likely to be associated with a gray visible arc around the entire cornea (“circumferential arcus”).

Geneva History Museum receives 2 Swedish chests, more

mhappold@shawmedia.com GENEVA – It’s a love story that will go down in history.

According to Geneva resident Ingrid Erikson Rowlett, her parents – Helge and MajLis Erikson – met on a ship coming to North America in 1954. Her mother, Maj-Lis, was going to America from Canada then back to Sweden, and her father, Helge, also was traveling to America.

After meeting, and unfortunately departing, love letters soon began to pass between the two. Three years later, the pair married in Geneva with a wedding cake shaped as a ship, honoring the place they met.

Wanting to share their family’s unique history, Erikson Rowlett and her sister, Margit Lundgren, on June 10 donated two antique chests they inherited from their father and a great aunt to the Geneva History Museum.

According to Erikson Rowlett, the sisters hope to preserve the chests and share them with everybody in town.

The chests, both more than 60 years old, are covered with old, Swedish stickers and stamps, including

tivities.

“It’s appropriate right before Swedish Days to have proof of our heritage,” said Emma.

She also encourages others who may have interesting or historic artifacts to donate. “Rather than sitting in the attic, the museum acts as that place for things to come,” Emma said.

Erikson Rowlett hopes the donations bring “enjoyment and knowledge, to look back at history.”

The Eriksons have lived in Geneva since 1957, starting a cabinet company on Kirk Road in Geneva. Their legacy and involvement with the community can be seen throughout the town, with their countertops in the Geneva Diner and their homemade pancake recipe used by the Geneva Lutheran Church for its traditional Swedish pancake breakfast during Swedish Days.

Erikson Rowlett and Lundgren now run the family business, I.B. Quality Cabinets Inc., which currently is at 612 S. 1st St. in Geneva. Honoring their heritage, the Eriksons are involved in Swedish Days, helping sponsor Sweden Väst and creating a traditional May Pole for the festivities.

BATAVIA – The American Physical Society has recognized the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory as a Historic Site for its nearly five decades of contributions to high-energy physics, according to a news release.

In a ceremony at the laboratory, Laura Greene, vice president of APS, presented Fermilab Director Nigel Lockyer with a plaque commemorating the lab’s official status as a Historic Site. The plaque reads, in part: “In recognition of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory for its pivotal contributions to high-energy physics, including the discoveries of the bottom and top quarks and

the tau neutrino, key components of the Standard Model,” the news release stated.

“We’re very pleased to receive this official status from the American Physical Society,” Lockyer stated in the release. “Fermilab’s bright future is built on a tradition of strong and important work, and it’s great to see that work recognized in this way.”

American Physical Society Historic Sites are chosen by the APS Historic Sites Committee with the goal of raising public awareness of physics and enlightening scientists about important events and places in their field, the release stated.

The plaque presented to Fermilab will be placed on display in Wilson Hall. The full text is as follows: “In recognition of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) for its pivotal contributions to high-energy physics, including the discoveries of the bottom and top quarks and the tau neutrino, key components of the Standard Model. Honoring the achievements of Robert R. Wilson, who helped design and establish the lab in 1967 and served as its first director, and Nobel Laureate Leon M. Lederman, who served as its second director and helped inaugurate the Tevatron, the world’s highest energy proton-antiproton collider with the pioneering use of superconducting magnets.”

ST. CHARLES – BotCon, the officially licensed collectors’ convention for Hasbro’s Transformers brand, will be today through Sunday at the Pheasant Run Resort, 4051 E. Main St., St. Charles. Public Information Meeting on Proposed Project at Fermilab Interested citizens are invited to a public information meeting to learn about the potential environmental impacts of a new science project planned by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), at its Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota.

The proposed Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) and Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) would send a beam of neutrinos 800 miles through the earth from Fermilab in Illinois to a new detector at the Sanford Lab in South Dakota. Fermilab has been conducting neutrino experiments for 30 years and several years ago constructed a similar project that sends neutrinos from Fermilab through the earth to a detector in Minnesota. This new project would build on the results from that research. The LBNF would greatly broaden scientific understanding of neutrinos, which make up a significant portion of our universe.

DOE has prepared an environmental documents under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the National Historic Preservation Act to identify and evaluate the potential environmental impacts of the proposed project.

The LBNF public information meeting at Fermilab will feature a range of illustrative posters and brief presentations on the proposed project and the NEPA process, followed by an opportunity for the community to discuss or comment on the project with LBNF scientists and leaders. The meeting will be:

North Aurora village trustees on Monday approved a new logo and motto for the village.

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – The village will now be known as the Crossroads on the Fox. North Aurora Village Board trustees Monday selected “Crossroads on the Fox” as the village’s new motto, replacing the village’s previous motto, “The Village with a View to the Future.”

At the same time, trustees also approved a new logo for the village. The new motto and logo are featured on the village’s revamped website, which also has a new Web address, www.northaurora.org.

North Aurora Village Administrator Steve Bosco said the new Web address will be easier for residents to remember than the previous one, www. vil.north-aurora.il.us.

The firm Rule29 designed the new logo and motto. Bosco said the new logo describes the village’s location in relation to the area.

“We’re close to the city, yet we’re not too close to the city,” Bosco said. “We’re on an interstate. We have a river. We have bike paths that go through. We have state highways that go through us. So basically, if you start in North Aurora, you can get virtually anywhere.”

The new logo incorporates elements of the village, including the State Street bridge and the Fox River.

Bosco said the rays emitting from beneath the bridge represent community connections and nature trails, while the circle around the logo represents a community united.

T.J. SPORTSMAN Born: Nov. 6, 1980 Died: June 14, 2015

T.J. Sportsman, age 34, of Sycamore, passed away tragically following an accident while he was returning home after winning a fishing tournament, not to mention biggest bass, in Wisconsin, Sunday, June 14, 2015. Taken too soon, he will never be replaced. His life and legacy live on through his family and friends.

He was born November 6, 1980, in Elgin, the son of Terry Sr. and Crystal (Ericson) Sportsman.

T.J. grew up in Elgin through his eighth grade year before his family moved to Burlington. T.J. finished his education at Burlington Central High School where he graduated with the class of 1999. Before receiving his diploma, he made a name for himself on the hardwood, receiving numerous awards including being named IBCA All-State. He

and was an avid hunter, but he was the predator when it came to softball and the number of home runs that flew through the air. He was a loving and devoted husband who was happiest with his wife on his arm and surrounded by his children, family and friends. He will never be forgotten.

He is survived by his loving wife, Charity; and their children, Andrew and Abigail; parents, Terry and Crystal Sportsman; mother and father-in-law, Donald and Shari Preussler; two siblings, Tia (Dan Palmiter) Sportsman and Tonsen Sportsman and his daughter Jovi; paternal grandfather, Glenn Sportsman; maternal grandmother, Muriel Ericson; many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, and a family of friends near and far.

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Shirley Sportsman; one uncle, Craig Sportsman; and his maternal grandfather, Eugene Ericson. T.J. will also be reunited with four angels who never got to see his face before they were born directly into Heaven.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, June 19, 2015, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, on the corner of Rt. 38 and LaFox Rd. (40W605 Rt. 38, Elburn, IL).

A funeral to celebrate his life will begin at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 20, 2015, also at the church, with a time of visitation from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. Rev. Matt Blackford, pastor of the church, will officiate.

Jack Brainard, age 91, of St. Charles, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, June 17, 2015. He was born in Wadsworth, Ohio, on March 9, 1924; the son of Clair Brainard and Mary Gleason.

Jack was proud of his service to his country and served in the Navy during WWII. As a long time resident of St. Charles; Jack served the City and Township faithfully in many ways.

Jack was the Assistant Chief at the St. Charles Fire Department, Alderman for the City of St. Charles, President of the Boy Scouts of America: “Three Fires Council”, and served on the St. Charles Township Board from 1989 through December 2014. Jack was also the owner of the Bill Fisher Insurance Agency in St. Charles.

Jack is survived by his two sons, James C. (Juliane) Brainard of Geneva, and John C. (Lesley) Brainard of Collierville, TN; his grandchildren, Gabrielle, Nicholas, Alexa, Samantha and Colton and Robb (Carrie).

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; son, Jeffrey; and daughter, Jennifer.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at Moss-Norris Funeral Home, 100 S. Third Street, St. Charles.

was a four year varsity basketball player and was named Daily Herald Player of the Year his senior year.

Upon graduation, he had played the most varsity games ever and was second highest leading scorer in Burlington Central History. T.J. was no stranger to the ball field either, ruling first base like only he could.

T.J. eventually transferred to Northern Illinois University, where he majored in Physical Education and graduated with a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction.

T.J. met the love of his life in the halls of his high school, but it really bloomed into something true over the summer of 1997. He and Charity Preussler danced the night away as Prom King and Queen and voted “Most Likely To Get Married”...so they did...eventually. They walked down the aisle together on October 15, 2005, and began their life in St. Charles for a time before settling down in Sycamore, IL. While making their house a home, they began a growing family that would include two children, Andrew Christian and Abigail Joy. T.J. first started working as a teacher at Batavia’s Alice Gustafson Elementary School in 2004.

He spent the next ten years making a family for himself as part of the staff at Munhall Elementary School in St. Charles. T.J. loved working with his students. They were always close to his heart and he to theirs and will missed dearly in the halls this fall.

T.J. was almost born with a fishing pole in his hand. From nine months on, T.J. loved to cast his line and try his luck, but it was during college he began fishing in tournaments, and was a constant contributor to many outdoor magazines including Midwest Outdoors.

Most recently, he and Ross Tournabene were directors of Angler’s Dream Lake Michigan Circuit.

T. J. was a lover of music and was never too far from quoting his favorite movies, of which there were many.

T.J. was a born leader and teacher which was evident not only in the classroom but on the baseball field as well. He coached several teams from Little League to Middle School sports. He loved outdoors

Starting Monday, crews will begin installing railroad wayside warning horns at the Union Pacific railroad crossings of LaFox and Brundidge roads, weather permitting.

Construction work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday for about the next two months.

The work will consist of the installation of foundations, electrical equipment, electrical service and warning horns.

Each intersection is expected to take about 30 days to complete, weather permitting.

The majority of this work will be done outside of the public right of way.

At various stages of the installation, temporary daily lane closures may be required to complete this work.

Motorists should expect minor delays and possible increased travel times during the installation of the warning horns.

Ten gardens featured in downtown contest

GENEVA – Those who enjoy the downtown flowers can now cast their vote for their favorite garden as part of the Geneva Beautification Committee’s Tour des Fleurs contest.

Ten gardens are featured in the inaugural contest and fundraiser that will run through Aug. 31.

GENEVA – The 105th annual Swedish Day Midsummer festival is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Good Templar Park, 528 East Side Drive, Geneva.

The cost is $5 a person, but children 12 and younger and those dressed in Scandinavian or Viking costumes will be admitted free. The Swedish Day Committee of International Organization of Good Templars organized the one-day,

family-friendly ethnic festival celebrating all things Swedish.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles History Museum on Saturday will host its fifth annual Pig Roast Celebration Fundraiser.

The event will be from 5 to 9 p.m. on the museum grounds and a blocked-off portion of Third Avenue immediately east of the museum at 215 E. Main St. Tickets to the event, which are $40 for museum members and $45 for nonmembers, will include a full plate of pulled pork, three sides, and a dessert provided by Dave’s Slow Food, as well as two drink tickets provided by museum neighbor The Office Dining & Spirits, 201 E. Main St., St. Charles. Because of alcohol being served, the event is strictly for adults ages 21 and older.

As of Wednesday afternoon, 180 tickets have been sold to the 250-capacity event, Alison Costanzo, the museum’s executive director, said.

Tickets will be available to buy at the door if the roast doesn’t sell out before then, she said.

“It’s a great event – we’re really excited about it,” Costanzo said.

Reality TV shows, an addiction I cannot fix I think I have a problem. And I’m not quite sure that I can solve it with a spoonful of medicine or even with the best advice that my mother has to offer.

I’m addicted to reality TV shows. With all my free time thanks to summer’s arrival, I’ve realized that a huge chunk of my favorite television shows fall under this category. These are TV shows without paid professional actors and actual storylines.

Instead, said programs typically consist of ordinary people and are unscripted. Some of these shows are competitions, and others simply revolve around the everyday lives of certain families.

While I do enjoy a good television show with a plot, there is just something about reality TV that sucks me in so easily. This summer, I’m extremely invested in “The Bachelorette,” “Return to Amish” and “Teen Mom,” as those are just a few of my guilty pleasure shows.

But why am I (as well as the rest of America) so infatuated with reality TV? After all, many people criticize these programs as being fake, silly and full of dumb individuals. News flash for all you reality show haters: Those little arguments aren’t going to stop me or anyone else from tuning in every time there’s a new episode.

Maybe it’s the bizarre, overthe-top, psychotic manner that some people have on these shows that draws the audience. I mean, who doesn’t want to see a housewife yell at her archenemy because she’s been messing around with her husband? Or watch as 25 grown men fight like crazed baboons every week in order to be handed a single red rose by a beautiful woman? Basically, it’s fun to watch people make fools of themselves on national TV. Likewise, because so many of these reality shows consist of average citizens, they are, in a way, more relatable since the

BEFORE THE DIPLOMA Denise Cartina reality stars usually have imperfections. Scripted television shows normally have the same bland types of characters who are always perfectly flawless in every way. Therefore, we as an audience quickly fall in love with the personalities of the people in reality shows, as we can typically empathize with them and relate to their struggles. Ultimately, these ordinary families, contestants and the like are just like you and me, or at least that is how TV producers like to put it so they can promote their shows. They know us all too well.

Reality shows remain on the top of the TV chain because of how interactive they are with the audience. Be honest here – how many times have you picked up your phone to dial for a contestant on “Dancing with the Stars” or “American Idol” at its peak? Viewers enjoy feeling like their opinion matters.

Reality shows that are competition-based are highly engaging, since you’re normally cheering on the same person or people week after week, hoping they advance in the show.

If there is some scientific reason for why reality TV is so addicting, I would love an explanation. However, for now, I’m going to just hop on the couch, pop a bag of popcorn and continue watching my favorite shows.

FDA targeting harmful trans fats BLOOMBERG NEWS

Over the past decade, Americans have cut their consumption of “partially hydrogenated” solid fats – also known as trans fats – by 85 percent, thanks to government-mandated labeling, consumers’ preference for more healthful products and changes by food producers. But the 15 percent that remains is far too much. That’s why the Food and Drug Administration is right to make good on its promise to ban added trans fats entirely.

It’s a move that could save thousands of lives.

Trans fats have been popular additives because they’re inexpensive, easy to work with (they stay solid at room temperature) and give baked goods an appealing flaky texture.

This is why you still find them in microwave pop-

corn, cake mixes, sprinkles and foods at some chain restaurants, such as Popeyes’ fried chicken and Red Lobster’s Cheddar Bay Biscuits.

There was a time when trans fats were thought to be less harmful than animal fats – until the 1980s, when research revealed them to be an artery-clogging menace: They boost LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and lower HDL (“good”) cholesterol.

A total ban is needed for the same reason that lead needs to be banned from paint: The Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences have found that there’s no safe level of consumption. The restrictions that the FDA proposed Monday could eventually prevent 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths per year, the agency estimates.

The new regime will forbid foodmakers from adding any artificially hydrogenated oils. (Companies will have three years to phase them out.)

Products with naturally occurring trans fat – cows have some in their stomachs as a digestive aid, so milk and meat have tiny amounts – will remain on shelves. And companies will be able to petition the FDA for individual exceptions. The agency will need to be very skeptical of these requests.

This kind of protection for cardiovascular health would be worth a little loss of taste in the foods that have been processed with trans fats. But judging from the experience of companies from McDonald’s to Quaker Oats that have already stopped using them, consumers probably won’t even notice.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Fox Valley Aero Club to host Windy City Warbirds and Classics R/C Air Show

But he finds flying radio-control jets to be more challenging.

“It’s all hand-eye coordination,” said Murray, vice-president of the Fox Valley Aero Club, a radio-control model airplane group located in St. Charles.

The club will host its second Windy City Warbirds and Classics R/C Air Show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, June 25, to Saturday, June 27, at its flying field at 3821 Karl Madsen Drive, St. Charles, located near the intersection of Route 38 and Peck Road. The event will feature more than 60 pilots from seven different states and Canada who are all skilled at flying large-scale, radio-controlled airplanes.

Admission to the event is $5 a person, with kids ages 12 and younger being admitted for free. Information is available at the Fox Valley Aero Club’s website, www.foxvalleyaero.com.

At a recent media day, Murray was demonstrating the power of his F-22 Raptor stealth fighter jet, which can get up to 200 mph an hour. He installed a jet engine in the plane.

Murray said he likes seeing the expression on people’s faces as the jet is whizzing through the air.

“It goes by fast,” he said. “You don’t know if it’s the real deal, or a model airplane.”

The club has evolved over the years.

It was founded in 1929 under the name Flying Fools and members flew handlaunched, free-flight gliders and rubber-band powered planes.

In 1979, the club changed its name to Fox Valley Aero Club.

John Fischer, who is on the board of directors for the Fox Valley Aero Club, joined the club about 12 years ago after he started flying larger-scale, radio-controlled airplanes.

It’s a seven-member group, of which we’re a member. There are about 256 RC pilots that belong to this group, and it’s a fan-

tastic opportunity. I’m expecting 70 to 80 pilots at the event.”

About 60 pilots participated in last year’s event, which attracted around 1,000 spectators, Fischer said.

“People should expect to see 150 to 200 RC models,” he said. “These are all giant-scale models of the warbird or classic era. You are going to see biplanes with at least a 60-inch wingspan.”

One of the planes that Fischer flies is a Cessna 310 with an 81-inch wingspan.

He customized the plane by adding such things as retractable landing gear, flaps,

brakes, and lights.

The plane can get up to a top speed of 85 to 90 mph, Fischer said. The club’s members fly their planes on a field that has an 800-foot runway.

“We put Xs on the ends of the runway so pilots know they shouldn’t land here,” he said.

After 20 years of being involved with remote-control planes, Fischer still finds the hobby thrilling.

“The thrill is creating something, from nothing many times, and being able to fly what you’ve created,” he said.

Summer is perfect time for rosé wine With the official arrival of summer, it’s the perfect time to get reacquainted with rosé.

While the fresh-fruit flavors, crispy acidity and lighter body – a few characteristics that seem to run through all rosés – are something that can be enjoyed all year with a variety of cheeses and foods, their refreshing nature make for easy sippers on a warm, sunny summer day.

Made from juice that has had minimal contact with the grape skins, a rosé doesn’t have the tannins or robust mouth feel of a red wine. It’s a wine I enjoy year round, but can really hit the spot in summer.

Reviewed are three rosés perfect for summer and a classic pinot noir for all seasons.

Winemaker spotlight

What looks like a supermodel’s face painted with bright colors, vivid confetti-like designs and a tangled collection of leaves seemingly inspired by metal-like artwork, Honoro Vera Rosado 2014 ($9.99) is a candidate for most impressive wine label of the year.

There’s more than a tribute to art with the Spanish rosé, however. A blush of pink in the glass; it’s a dry wine with flavors of watermelon and strawberry. A blend of tempranillo and syrah was used and the saignée method, a process where some pink juice from the initial press is removed from the must. Because there is less volume in the must during maceration the wine becomes more concentrated.

The French carry a lofty reputation when it comes to rosé. The Domaine du Tariquet 2014 ($11.99) from Gascony is 40 percent merlot, 40 percent syrah and 20 percent tannat and lives up to the stellar reputation. Winemaker Armin Grassa has crafted a bold rosé that is a darker shade of pink.

Flavors of raspberry, ripe strawberries and lime zest are omnipresent, while a hint of gardenia flower adds intrigue to a rosé made with the same process as a white wine.

The Mulderbosch Cabernet Sauvignon rosé ($11.99) continued its impressive trend

UNCORKED James Nokes of being loaded with distinct flavors in 2014. Winemaker Adam Mason used cabernet grown only for rosé, and an early harvest helps to maintain acidity. A salmon pink color in the glass and tart grapefruit flavor mixes with a zesty strawberry finish. There’s a snap of minerality and a hint of green herb on the finish on the South African rosé.

For a brunch, a lunch on the patio or a glass on a warm night, these three rosés, from three very different parts of the world, are widely-available, value-driven wines that should be a part of every summer.

What to buy

Roar Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir 2013 ($42) Vineyards owned and managed by Gary Franscioni have always impressed. Everything seems to be just right at his Soledad, California, vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands Appellation. The soil, climate, influence of Monterey Bay and elevation combined with Franscioni’s years of experience are ideal conditions.

Winemaker Scott Shapley turned out a perfectly balanced pinot noir for Franscioni’s Roar label. Cherry cola comes across initially. It’s a dark fruit experience, but full flavors of tobacco and clove further entice.

There’s a eucalyptus hint on the finish and an underlying string of minerality that keep the wine balanced and from being too fruity or plush. The mouth feel is a little brooding as the flavors really announce their presence distinctly but meld together for an expertly integrated finish.

Taylor will perform at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 20, as part of the two-day Blues on the Fox Festival at RiverEdge Park, 360 N. Broadway Ave., Aurora.

The festival will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday, June 19, with Royal Southern Brotherhood, followed by North Mississippi Allstars at 9 p.m. Saturday’s bill includes Taylor, Moreland & Arbuckle, Mavis Staples and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Taylor about the upcoming show and his new album.

Eric Schelkopf: Your new album, “Hey Joe Opus/Red Meat” will be released May 5 on your new Trance Blues Festival label. As I understand, the songs on the album comprise a suite in 10 parts.

What were your main goals for the album?

Otis Taylor: To do something different. I figured a singer-songwriter doing a cover song would be news.

That was sort of my philosophy. It would be unexpected for me to do a cover song.

Schelkopf: I know there are a couple of different versions of “Hey Joe” on the album. That song, of course, was made famous by the Jimi Hendrix Experience in 1966. Why did you want to do two different versions?

Taylor: To make it like an opus, a journey.

You listen to it straight through, it’s a journey, and it takes you back where you started.

It’s not a commercial album.

Schelkopf: You seem to have a lot to say on your albums.

Taylor: I just say what people don’t want to talk about. I go in the shadows that other people don’t want to walk in.

Schelkopf: You have several guest musicians on the album, including Warren Haynes of Gov’t Mule and The Allman Brothers Band. How did you choose the musicians on the album?

Taylor: I tried to contact a lot of musicians, and I got a few nos. I tried to get Gary Clark Jr. But we got Warren Haynes, which is pretty heavy. He’s a legend.

Schelkopf: You do have a unique musical style, trance blues. How did you come up with your style?

Taylor: I don’t know. I used to play old-timey banjo, which is trance music to me.

The blues came from the banjo. People just don’t know it yet.

When I was very young in the ’60s, I was playing songs that were 20 minutes long. I was already doing that. It was just kind of what we did in the ’60s.

The jam band thing was started in the ’60s, you know. Everybody was doing it; it wasn’t just the Grateful Dead. There was a lot of jazz influence flowing out of it.

Schelkopf: You’ve received a lot of critical acclaim.

Guitar Player Magazine called you the most relevant blues artist of our time. What do you think about such adulation?

Taylor: I just think it keeps me eating, that’s what I think. I don’t know who the most relevant blues musician is.

I know that I’m doing something different.

I’m slowly getting accepted, but I’m still fighting the battle against the traditional blues people.

Kaneland’s No. 3 hitter batted .456 with seven home runs and 39 RBIs and also was sound defensively behind the plate while bringing coaching instincts in her interactions with teammates.

“Not even just being a leader for everbody else, but rise above everybody else and be the best I can be,” Kuefler said.

Kuefler even shows reluctance to rest for too long on the achievements that helped her boost Kaneland to the first state trophy in school history.

“In my book, I can always do better. There’s never a stopping point,” she said.

“You can always keep going.”

Kuefler, the Kane County Chronicle Softball Player of the Year, ended her final prep

season with a .456 batting average, seven home runs and 39 RBIs for the Class 3A third-place Knights.

Each of those figures ranked second on the team to junior third baseman Meg Cohrs, but the Knights hardly question Kuefler as tops in the intangible leadership categories.

As Kaneland stormed through an unbeaten Northern Illinois Big 12 East season and outscored its first five postseason opponents, 40-5, there was Kuefler, stabilizing the lineup, stout senior righthander Angie Morrow and the entire operation.

“Everyone looks up to Paige so much,” Knights junior center fielder Rachel Goress said. “She’s like one of the coaches, almost. Just

In the offseason, when we’re not allowed to have our coaches work with us during the winter stuff, she’s always got us and (is) leading and stuff. She’s definitely an awesome leader.

She’s going to do amazing in college.”

Kuefler will head to Lindenwood University, an NAIA school in downstate Belleville, as a catcher in the fall.

Her softball career actually started in the corresponding battery spot. As a

house league pitcher, Kuefler quickly learned she’d rather visit the circle on mound conferences than become a permanent resident.

It’s difficult to imagine watching Kuefler now, but nerves had occasion to set in.

“I always joke that when she was in 10U, she tried pitching, and she did just fine until somebody got on base,” said Kuefler’s dad, Mike, a Knights assistant who also coaches his daughter for the Kane County XPlosion travel program and as a catching instructor. “Then it got to the point of, ‘That’s it. You’re getting behind the plate.’ A little bit of pitching and we jumped her behind the plate. Then that’s it. She ran with it.”

Morrow emerged as a top-notch running mate upon

transferring from Burlington Central to Kaneland before the 2013-14 school year.

She conversed and collaborated with Kuefler from the start, a precursor to two solid seasons together. As a senior, the Wisconsin-bound Morrow finished 18-3 with 1.18 ERA and 174 strikeouts over 21 starts and 136 innings. In the postseason, she boasted a 0.76 ERA with four shutouts in seven starts.

Both players, now good friends, credit the other for her 2015 successes.

“She’s an unbelievable catcher, and she has such a great attitude about everything, and we work so well together,” Morrow said. “So I’m going to miss her.”

Goff ‘just huge’ for third-place Knights

kdruley@shawmedia.com Peter Goff insists his first nod as Kane County Chronicle Softball Coach of the Year will double as his last one.

Not directly, of course, but with his firm hold that he has no intention of shedding his “interim” tag after one season at Kaneland.

Goff, the school’s athletic director, enjoyed banner success in 2015.

Four-plus months after stepping into the role after predecessor Brian Willis wasn’t retained, Goff led the Knights to a 25-9 record and a third-place finish in Class 3A, the first state trophy in program history.

“He was just huge this year,”

Knights junior third baseman Meg Cohrs said. “I mean, he’ll say all day that it wasn’t him, it was the girls. And it was us. We worked really hard. Angie (Morrow) Peter Goff worked really hard.

[Paige Kuefler] hit the snot out of the ball all year. But without his support, we wouldn’t have been here.”

Goff grinned through the East Peoria mugginess while presenting each player with her third-place medal late Saturday morning.

That expression seldom left his face this spring regardless of his team’s condition or those outdoors.

To be sure, the season was often figuratively sunny for Kaneland, which rolled to a Northern Illinois Big 12 East title before earning postseason hardware at regionals at Lemont, sectionals at Montini and the Rosemont 1 supersectional. The upbeat Goff, who coached at Ashton-Franklin Center and Sterling before advancing in his administrative career, offered an encouraging presence throughout.

“I think he did a really good job this year,” junior left fielder Courtney Davis said. “Kind of sad that this is probably going to be his last year, but he did a great job.”

There’s no “probably” in the way Goff credited his players and fifth-year assistant Mike Kuefler, father of se-

nior catcher Paige Kuefler, the KCC Player of the Year.

“Everyone on this team, the players, the coaches, the trainer, pulled everything together this season,” Goff said. “It was incredible. Sometimes, it felt like all I had to do was show up.”

Goff’s early summer workdays now include a softball coaching search, but Goff knows he’ll beam about the 2015 Knights for as long as he’s associated with IHSA athletics.

The thought of this team’s legacy elicits yet another smile.

“Just the athletes and the people that have come out of Kaneland is unbelievable,” Goff said. “I’ll just tell you, that’s going to be something special for them for the rest of their lives.”

The Chamber and their many volunteers have made events like Swedish Days, Festival of the Vine, the Art Show, and the Christmas Walk huge successes. Geneva has become the envy of many towns that try to emulate its accomplishments. Towns from near and far seek our town’s advice on how to create and sustain their own events.

The Chamber calls this town a “picture postcard”. The Fox River, State and Third Streets are picturesque, but it’s the hearts of the all the small businesses that beat behind that picture postcard look.

It’s the hearts of the people who came here because they knew Geneva was unique and a good place to put down business roots. They put their hearts and finances into making it work. Each in their own way, doing their own thing so that when you look behind the picture postcard, there are the hearts and hopes of people who care about the city.

Continued from page 23 About 10 days before the season started, Kuefler faced the potential prospect of missing at least part of her high school swan song.

An early March car accident in which her vehicle was T-boned left Kuefler concussed and thankful for her life, but she ultimately didn’t miss a game, crediting a favorable schedule and her resolve.

“After everything had gotten better, I knew that everything was going to be OK,” Kuefler said. “I only had a concussion and a little scratch on my back, which was very, very awesome compared to what could have happened if It were two feet closer. … I’m an athlete. I love the game of softball. I’m never, ever going to quit the game I love no matter what happens.”

Knights coach Peter Goff called Kuefler “incredibly tough, both mentally and physically.”

“I love Kaneland. There’s no place I’d rather be.”

The latter part of that equation manifested itself as Kuefler took aim from the No. 3 spot in the batting order.

Her offensive contributions included a .500 average, two home runs and 10 RBIs in eight conference games.

Players called Kaneland’s run to the league title a catalyst for the Knights’ landmark postseason run. The team’s first state tournament trip since 2000 ended with Kaneland rebounding from a 2-1 semifinal loss to Marengo with a 7-1 victory against Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin in the third-place game.

“I can’t believe how far we’ve gotten, and I’m so glad for all our teammates,” Kuefler said. “And especially our fans. I love Kaneland. There’s no place I’d rather be.”

Hirsch (2-3, 2.98 ERA) last started at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in 2009, his senior year at North. Being from the area, he expects a fairly good showing of hometown support, something he always appreciates.

“I love having support anytime,” Hirsch said. “It doesn’t matter how many people show up, I enjoy and am thankful for support wherever I am.”

One person he can count on seeing, should the weather cooperate for the scheduled 6:30 p.m. first pitch, will be North head coach Todd Genke.

Genke said he keeps in contact with as many of his players who have gone on to play at the next level as he can, and makes sure he can get out to see them play whenever they are in the area.

“We are bringing a nice little group,” Genke said. “I

double checked with Zach a few nights ago to see if he was still starting because of the rain and he reassured me that he’d be out there. We are really excited to see him throw and I hope he throws the way I know he is capable.”

Genke said Hirsch had joked in a previous conversation, when hearing Genke and other supporters would be in attendance, that he was going to be nervous pitching in front of people.

“He told me ‘There’s never anyone in the stands when I pitch, so I’m going to be nervous’,” Genke said with a laugh.

Hirsch was selected by the Brewers as a 19th-round draft pick out of Nebraska in June 2014.

Cougars manager Mark Grudzielanek said the plan is to keep Hernandez, a Rule 5 pick from the Tampa Bay Rays organization with the team through the six-game homestand (one more with Wisconsin, followed by a three-game set with Peoria) and go from there.

“That’s the plan we have set,” Grudzielanek said. “We have him scheduled to catch (today), and until I hear otherwise, that’s the plan. We have a schedule laid out for him so that has him catching (today).”

Hernandez, who has missed all of this season after having surgery on a fractured hamate bone in his left hand in March, left Wednesday’s game early with soreness in the hand.

Cougars win sixth straight at home: Wednesday’s back-and-

forth affair found the Cougars on the right side of the scoreboard, with an 8-7 victory to take the first two games of the three-game set agains Wisconsin.

Cody Regis hit his first triple of the season and was also hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Cougars the lead.

The Cougars (33-32) scored three runs in the eighth to take the lead and needed all of them as Wisconsin (21-45) scored one of their own in the ninth, but Zac Curtis got the final out to secure his 13th save, and Luis Ramirez picked up his first win of the season to clinch a series win for the Cougars.

The team will go for the sweep tonight as they send Wei-Chieh Huang (3-0, 0.76 ERA) to the mound against Hirsch.

Tri-Cities contingent hails Evans opportunities

ccasey@shawmedia.com Three recent graduates from Tri-Cities high schools have been selected as recipients of the Chick Evans Scholarship.

Nick LaRocco (Batavia), Nick Lombardo (St. Charles East) and Max Markowicz (St. Charles North) were chosen as three of the 104 recipients of the scholarship, awarded to golf caddies from the Chicagoland area through the Chick Evans Foundation.

The Chick Evans Scholarship is a full, four-year housing and tuition scholarship that is valued at approximately $80,000 over four years.

“I was super excited about it,” said LaRocco, who will be attending Marquette to study biochemistry. “Especially for financial reasons, it takes a huge burden off of my family and it is a really big deal for all of us.”

LaRocco, who has been caddying for three years and plans to attend medical school after his four years at Marquette, said the process to apply for the scholarship was long, and more than anything, an interesting process.

He said that applicants were told it was in their best interests to submit their essays by the end of September 2014 for better priority. LaRocco said it wasn’t until the beginning of March

until he heard anything.

“Not knowing for six months wasn’t the easiest thing to deal with,” LaRocco said. “It was an interesting process, but after going through the interview and hearing I received it was an awesome feeling.”

Both Lombardo and Markowicz plan to attend the University of Illinois in the fall.

Markowicz will study finance, while Lombardo will be enrolled in the specialized chemistry department in Champaign.

Both were humbled by the opportunity to be a Chick Evans Scholar.

“I was more star struck than anything,” Lombardo said. “I have been

working at this since I was 12, and to be named an Evans Scholar is surreal.

This is easily the greatest moment of my life.”

“This means everything to me,” Markowicz said. “Not only to help out financially, but i will also be making friendships and connections that will help me later in life. No other scholarship can give you something like that.”

The Chick Evans Scholarship program, which is funded by the Western Golf Association, or WGA, is among the nation’s largest privately-funded scholarship programs. Currently, 870 caddies are enrolled in colleges as Evans Scholars.

GENEVA – Zach Hirsch wasn’t going to allow anything to inhibit him from starting against the Cougars this time around.

Hirsch, a 2009 St. Charles North graduate and member of the Milwaukee Brewers Class-A affiliate Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, will start on the mound today against the Cougars at Fifth Third Bank Ball Park in Geneva.

The Timber Rattlers had Hirsch scheduled to start back in May, but elbow soreness forced the southpaw to miss the appearance. Hirsch said he has thought about today’s outing for awhile, but wants to make sure he doesn’t get too caught up in the moment.

“I’m really excited about it, there’s no doubt about that,” Hirsch said after Wednesday’s matinee, an 8-7 Cougars’ win. “I was looking forward to it last time we were in town, but with the injury, I wasn’t able to go. But whether I’m

Behavioral therapy is first step in treating child’s OCD Dear Doctor K: I think my 9-yearold son may have OCD. How is this condition treated in children?

Dear Reader: Before discussing treatment for OCD, it’s important to describe what it is. You know, of course, but other readers may not.

Children (and adults) with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) are troubled by repeated, intrusive, distressing thoughts (obsessions). These obsessions cause great anxiety. As a result, people with OCD often have a strong urge to repeat certain behaviors (compulsions) in order to reduce the anxiety. For example, people who have obsessive thoughts about germs may repeatedly wash their hands.

OCD usually starts in childhood or adolescence; symptoms may appear as early as age 3. A young child with OCD may insist on bedtime routines done without variation, night after night. He or she may insist that toys be arranged in exactly the same way every day.

Many children like a sense of order and routine. But in a child with OCD, these beliefs or behaviors become all-consuming.

They interfere with school, home life and recreational activities.

Even young children often know that their obsessions are senseless

Treatment may help to reduce symptoms and improve a child’s ability to function. Many experts recommend trying a type of talk therapy called cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) first, before turning to medication. If you decide to try CBT, look for a clinician experienced at working with children and teens.

A version of CBT known as exposure and response prevention is typically used in treating OCD in patients of all ages. During therapy, a clinician exposes patients – either physically or through the imagination – to the things, places and circumstances that provoke their obsessions. Patients are then prevented from performing the usual compulsive ritual.

For example, if your child is obsessed with germs, he may be asked to touch a “dirty” shoe.

Then he will be told to wait before washing his hands. The waiting time before hand washing will increase over time. Eventually, if all goes well, he will learn to tolerate the anxiety, making the compul-

sive behaviors unnecessary.

Medication can also help children better manage OCD. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), such as fluoxetine (Prozac) and sertraline (Zoloft), are the drugs most often prescribed and studied in children with OCD. These drugs are normally taken to treat depression.

SSRIs are prescribed at higher doses and for longer periods of time to treat OCD than to treat depression.

A combination of CBT and medication often gives a child the best chance of relief.

What causes OCD? For many years, it was regarded as a purely psychological problem. That meant (to many of those who believed it) that there was no alteration in the anatomy or chemistry of the brain. It also implied that people with OCD simply had some kind of character flaw.

Today, however, we know that a tendency to have OCD is inherited – and that there are particular brain circuits and chemistry that are different in people with OCD.

Sleepover not worth risk Dr. Wallace: I’m 12 years old, and I’ve been invited to a slumber party. I really want to go because some of my best friends are going.

I know the girl, but not very well. She has two brothers, and they have been busted for selling drugs, but the girl is a good citizen.

My parents have told me that I will not be attending the party because of this, and I don’t think this is fair.

I have been taught that everyone should be judged on what they do, not what a brother, a sister or a parent does. My parents also don’t want me to go to the party because they don’t know the parents. I don’t think this is fair because none of this is my fault. The girl is not responsible for the behavior of her brothers and should not be judged by their actions. But I can understand why your parents have no enthusiasm for letting you go to her slumber party.

The brothers’ arrests seem to indicate family turmoil and trouble.

Your mom and dad, having no other information about the family, simply don’t want to risk sending you overnight to a potentially chaotic, unsupervised situation.

Dr. Wallace: I just finished reading your column about the girl who snorted cocaine when she was pregnant. It reminded me of how close I came to disaster a while back.

I did not snort cocaine, but I smoked it, and my husband had been trying to get me to

Thank heaven we were blessed with a normal, healthy baby girl!

She is now 5 months old, and I shudder when I think what I could have done to her. I still can’t believe I was so selfish.

Many “coke babies” are born with severe problems, ranging from low birth weight and size to actual cocaine addiction.

Some are stillborn. You got a second chance, and I am happy to hear you’ve made the most of it. Congratulations on being drug-free and having a healthy baby and a very special and caring husband who will also be a great father!

Cocaine is a highly addictive drug, and quitting may be the toughest thing one has ever had to do, but help is available. And if anyone should be motivated to seek that help, it’s a mother-to-be.

That sounds logical, although an overbid on the power of lightning.

The key word for today’s deal, though, is “second.”

A defender’s opening lead imparts information about his holding in that suit, but sometimes it takes his second lead to tell partner exactly how to defend.

How does that apply in this deal?

South is in three no-trump, and West leads the heart three. South takes East’s queen with his king, crosses to dummy with a spade, and runs the club queen. What should happen after that?

The auction was simple and straightforward. North, with a balanced hand and no thought of a slam, correctly did not mention his minor suit.

West knows that South holds the heart jack, because if East had had that card, he would have played the jack, not the queen, at trick one.

When playing third hand high, one tables the bottom of touching cards.

So, unless South started with an unlikely king-jack-doubleton, West must try to get East on lead for a heart return through declarer’s jack. How? Clearly, the answer is in diamonds. But which diamond should West lead?

As he wants East to return a heart, West should lead his nine, the high card denying interest in that suit. Then, East should win with his ace and return the heart nine, resulting in down two.

GENEVA – Geneva HomeGoods customers will have the opportunity to support cancer care and research while shopping at the home fashions retailer through Sunday, June 28.

More than 335 HomeGoods stores nationwide will be participating in the 14th annual “Help Families Fight Cancer” campaign benefiting the Jimmy Fund, which supports pediatric and adult cancer care and research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, according to a news release.

“For 14 years our customers and associates have generously supported Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund through our in-store fundraising campaign,” said Robyn Arvedon, HomeGoods spokesperson, in the release. “Each year we are even more inspired by their passion and commitment to continue to help families fight cancer.”

Campaign materials will feature original artwork

by Kate Morris, 7, a pediatric patient at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the release states.

HomeGoods customers can participate by making a contribution at the register to “Help Families Fight Cancer” with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting Dana-Farber, or by purchasing a reusable shopping bag featuring floral artwork designed by Morris.

HomeGoods will contribute 50 cents to the Jimmy Fund for each bag purchased.
