Behind the scenes of Sunset Dance Academy PARK PERSPECTIVES Natalie Seidel It’s hard to believe that ballet wasn’t always easy for the coordinator of the Geneva Park District’s Sunset Dance Academy, Katie Behrens.

Behrens was actually kicked out of her first dance lesson at age 3 because she would rather roll around on the floor than perform plies and pirouettes. It wasn’t until six years later that she was reintroduced to dance. This time she fell in love. Under the instruction of professional dancers, she was soon performing alongside college students in Northern Illinois University’s “Nutcracker” party scene.

When her parents purchased DanceScape studio after its owner had passed away, dance became Behrens’s life.

She lived at the studio, dancing 15 hours a week. Eventually, she enrolled in Chicago Academy for the Arts, commuting by train for morning academics and afternoon dance classes.

After high school, she completed a Bachelor of Arts in Dance at NIU, with a focus in ballet and modern techniques. While she had been teaching at her parents’ studio since the age of 15, Behrens decided to search for new opportunities after graduation in 2002.

“I no longer wanted to be the owners’ daughter,” Behrens said, “It was time to spread my wings. [Geneva Park District] called me back, and here I am.”

Here at Sunset, Behrens has expanded offerings from less than 30 to over 90 classes a week, featuring quality instruction from classically trained teachers. Known as “Miss Katie,” her days begin early with Tiny Toes and Mommy & Me classes, and end in the evening with classes for older dancers, some of which she has known since they were 2½ years old.

“Kids come in at different levels, with varying sensory and motor skills. So to see their progression and how the develop, that’s really rewarding,” Behrens said. “Children learn in a variety of ways, and

dance incorporates all of them – visual, kinesthetic, verbal, auditory.”

“I see our oldest girls learning responsibility, time management and accountability. They learn how to take constructive criticism. Audition skills help them later in life with first impressions and job interviews,” Behrens added.

The recreational program puts children first, with affordable, syllabus-based classes for all ages and skill levels in ballet, hip hop, jazz, tap, musical theater, lyrical and more. Its goal is to foster a love of dance with the hopes participants will continue to dance. Many Sunset dancers move on to make high school dance teams and win state titles.

allows dedicated dancers the opportunity to study dance at a higher level of expectation.

This “no-cut” company learns challenging choreography to perform at local community events and dance competitions.

“Competitions aren’t about the big, shiny trophies, but about the experience of performing for hundreds on a stage under professional lighting,” Behrens said. “The company girls work as a team, and they become a family.”

Sunset Dance Company 2014-15 season begins in the fall with auditions Aug. 17.

The “no-cut” auditions are open to dancers of all experience levels, ages 5 and older. An informational parent meeting will be from 6 to 6:30 p.m. July 15 at Sunset Community Center. Audition registration is required by Aug. 14.

Pork chop fundraiser for Holiday in the Grove

‘Hugging Saint’ headed to M.A. Center

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com LAFOX – Spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi, also known as India’s “Hugging Saint” will head to the M.A. Center Chicago in LaFox during her North American Tour.

Thousands are expected at the center at 41W501 Keslinger Road, near Elburn, said Suresh Babu, a volunteer spokesman for Amma, as she is known.

Free public programs will be at 11 a.m. Monday, 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m.

Babu said those who wish to get a hug should come 90 minutes early and get a numbered token.

“If they manage to get there by 8 or 9 a.m., they tend to get their hug in about two hours,” Babu said.

More than 6,000 people came last year for hugs, but because

the free public programs are offered during workdays this year, Babu said he expects about 5,000.

Amma has been giving blessings in the form of hugs since 1987 and has hugged 24 million people over the years, he said.

“Some say, ‘I don’t know what took over me,’ ‘I am so at peace with myself,’ are things I have personally heard,” Babu said. “Her hugs are manifesting universal love. It is done in a subdued environment, which is more spiritual in nature and will have a religious overtone to it based on the Hindu philosophy of universal love.”

However, Amma herself does not claim to be a Hindu or belong to any religion, Babu said.

“She is hugged by all faiths.

Rabbis. Cardinals and bishops,” Babu said. “Buddhist monks, priests from all denominations – they all go up and get a hug.”

Teen charged in robbery accused of attacking officers

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A 17-year-old St. Charles boy, already charged with armed robbery, burglary and retail theft in Batavia and St. Charles, faces additional charges in connection to an incident early Sunday at the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center.

The teen was charged with four counts of aggravated battery and two counts of aggravated assault. He appeared before Judge Thomas Mueller on Tuesday in juvenile court, wearing a dark-colored jail uniform.

According to a synopsis read in court, at about 4:30 a.m.

Sunday, Kane County Sheriff’s deputies assisted the center’s staff members with removing items from the teen’s holding

area. He had tied a T-shirt around his neck and said “he no longer wanted to live,” according to the synopsis.

The teen allegedly began pushing and kicking two deputies and approached them in an aggressive manner, Mueller said. The teen was ordered to be held in custody after he first appeared in court Thursday on the earlier charges.

la N. Magnuson, 22, of Geneva, was charged with felony counts of robbery and armed robbery along with retail theft, a misdemeanor, in connection with an armed robbery that took place June 11 at the Batavia Wal-Mart at 801 N. Randall Road, according to court documents.

The teen also is charged with two counts of burglary, one count of felony retail theft,

one count of misdemeanor retail theft and one count of unlawful use of a weapon. The charges are in connection to an incident involving the St. Charles location of Meijer, 855 S. Randall Road, according to St. Charles police.

Charges were denied for Magnuson in the Meijer incident, but detectives await additional charges in DuPage County in connection with an

incident at the far eastside St. Charles Wal-Mart, 150 Smith Road, police said.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Sarah Seberger said in court Tuesday that the state filed a discretionary transfer motion, which would send the teen’s case to adult court if granted by the judge.

Mueller set the teen’s next court date for July 2. Magnuson’s next court date is July 18.

SWEDISH DAYS DELIGHTS Geneva festival offering attendees variety of cuisines

ENEVA – The 65th annual Swedish Days opened in Geneva on Tuesday to throngs of festivalgoers for the six-day festival featuring food, music, shopping and activities.

The festival opened with hot and sunny conditions, with temperatures near 90 degrees, and crowds jamming the sidewalks on Third Street, shopping, listening to music and eating.

As shoppers milled about and free concerts played on the courthouse lawn, many sought shade and something cool in the rising afternoon heat.

Among those having a rest were Donald Manke of Elburn, and son-inlaw, Chris Noll of Las Vegas with his grandson, Cason, 5.

They were waiting for their wives – Sherry Manke and Alicia Noll, with 2-year-old Treva – to finish up some shopping.

Donald Manke praised the festival, which he said he has been attending for decades.

“All the arts and the crafts that are along Third Street – many of them are so unique,” Manke said, holding up two bags of goods. “I am supporting Geneva and the [Geneva] Chamber of Commerce, and I hope they continue doing

this. ... I’ve lived here since 1973, and I think I only missed a couple times. It keeps getting better. They do a good job running this. A very good job.”

Tuesday was Chris Noll’s first Swedish Days experience.

“I’m pretty impressed,” Noll said.

“I’ve never seen things like this. Sure don’t have it in Vegas.”

Chris Berry of Geneva and her granddaughters, Katie Washburn, 14, and Jenna Washburn, 11, both of Yorkville, were resting on the patio at the 318 Coffeehouse.

The sisters said they favored snow cones and shopping.

“I like all the sales, and I like the events and to see some friends,” Berry said. “I like to go to the Little Traveler tent. I used to love the Swedish meatballs that the Congregational Church used to have. That was a long time ago. I notice Chianti has some Swedish meatballs. I’m going to try those.”

The festival continues through Sunday.

Plan for juvenile center sent to Finance and Budget committee

More than tornadoes – Elburn officials talk emergency sirens

By NATALIE WICKMAN nwickman@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A proposal to adequately staff 300-minute school days for students in juvenile custody programs was discussed during the Kane County Judicial and Public Safety Committee meeting Friday and passed on to the Finance and Budget Committee, with only one vote against it.

The meeting’s proposal included a presentation from Lisa Aust, executive director of Kane County court services for the 16th Judicial Circuit; Judith Brawka, chief judge of the 16th Judicial Circuit; and two members of the Kane County Regional Office of Education: Pat Dal Santo, regional superintendent, and Shirley LeClere, director of professional development.

Aust oversees parts of the proposal that apply to youth counselors, while Dal Santo and LeClere are in charge of the juvenile custody program teachers. The next Finance and Budget Committee meeting is scheduled for June 25.

“Ever since the 1970s, there have been a lot of studies that show a direct correlation between more education and committing less crime,” Aust said.

Three-hundred-minute school days are the required state minimum for nonincarcerated students, while incarcerated students currently have either 120- or 160-minute school days.

students will include language arts, math, science, social studies and health classes, in addition to a 60-minute lunch. Aust said time students spend on homework will not count toward the 300 minutes.

LeClere said there is enough teaching staff for 300-minute school days, but there aren’t enough youth counselors, which have to be present during juvenile custody classes. That is what prompted Friday’s proposal.

Aust said the Administrative Office of Illinois Courts gave $600,000 to Kane County to be used for probation purposes. At the Finance and Budget Committee meeting, Aust will ask to use $323,430 of the AOIC money for securing the needed amount of youth counselors to offer 300-minute school days for those in juvenile custody programs.

“We researched and found that we consistently pay lower wages than the surrounding counties,” Aust said.

“We’re losing very talented people to other counties.”

If approved, Aust said the rest of the $600,000 will be given back to the county.

The longer school days don’t require a change in teacher

wages.

LeClere said 300-minute school days will start the week of July 6 and will only be offered to a limited amount of incarcerated juvenile students. Friday’s proposal has to pass during the July 8 County Board meeting before the longer school day can be offered to all students.

“We’ve been saying no child left behind – no incarcerated child left behind either,” Dal Santo said.

Brawka introduced the proposal during the meeting, saying that she wants to see it succeed.

“We are holding [individuals in juvenile custody],” Brawka said. “So you and I are their in-local parents, and we are responsible for them.”

ELBURN – On May 20, officials in Elburn noted a severe thunderstorm headed toward the village, with reports of large hail, as large as tennis balls in some areas. The outdoor warning sirens were set off.

Elburn’s leaders stand by their decision, saying that large hail and strong winds can be just as damaging as tornadoes in some instances. But they acknowledged some residents were puzzled, unaware that – in February – the village’s policy was expanded to allow the sirens to sound in the event of a severe thunderstorm warning, with wind speeds of at least 70 mph or golf ball-sized hail.

On Monday, board members discussed the matter at a committee of the whole meeting at Elburn Village Hall.

Trustee Dave Gualdoni, who works closely with the Elburn Community Response Team, helped craft the changes to the village’s policy, along with Police Chief Steve Smith. Gualdoni said he was looking to get the word out about the policy, as well as address any questions fellow Village Board members

might have.

Gualdoni said in the event of strong storms, he is concerned about the safety of people who might be out, especially at local athletic fields. Village President Dave Anderson said that was a good reason to alert residents.

“I think it was right that the sirens went off,” Anderson said.

Gualdoni said before the change, the sirens would be set off with a tornado warning. Trustees were not against the sirens going off for severe storms. Some wondered whether they could be set off for other emergencies. Trustee Bill Grabarek said, for instance, that if a train were to derail in the village, it could cause a dangerous situation.

Smith said he didn’t know any reason why the village couldn’t use the sirens any way officials wanted to, but he also said that, in such a situation, it might not be best for residents to do what typically is done when sirens are sounded – likely heading toward their basements. Instead, Smith said, it’s possible officials would go to neighborhoods and provide instructions for residents.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Sugar Grove resident Jennifer Madziarczyk said she wasn’t sure what kind of reception Avenue J Studios would receive when she opened the business in January in the Elburn Community Center.

As it turned out, the reception has been overwhelming.

Avenue J Studios in August will be moving to its new, larger home on the west side of North Aurora.

Avenue J Studios provides performing arts education for ages 3 to 18.

Its focus is on building self-esteem and confidence in every student while promoting social responsibility and awareness, Madziarczyk said.

“We have 48 kids involved in our current production, ‘Willy Wonka Jr.,’ ” Madziarczyk said. “The interest has just exploded on us.”

“Willy Wonka Jr.” will be presented from Aug. 22 to 24 at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre on the Batavia High School campus, 1201 Main St., Batavia.

Madziarczyk said Avenue J Studios is squeezed for space in its 800-square-foot space in the Elburn Community Center.

“You can’t have rehearsals and classes at the same time,” she said.

The new North Aurora space is about 2,600 square feet, which will provide plenty of space for Avenue J Studios, Madziarczyk said.

Our whole mission is about

building self-esteem and confidence.”

That also is the mission of the Kaneland area group Promoting Enrichment and Kindness – or PEAK for Kids. Sugar Grove resident Renee Dee, the founder of the group, has joined forces with Madziarczyk.

PEAK for Kids will be based out of the new North Aurora space, which also will allow the group to hold activities for both children and adults.

“Our mission statements

were almost redundant,” Dee said. “We both set out to build kids’ self-awareness and self respect.”

Dee’s daughter, Natalie, 9, was part of Avenue J Studios’ first production, “Once Upon a Leprechaun.”

“My daughter started getting involved in theater, and it became her thing,” Dee said.

Dee said ideally the studio would be in the Kaneland area, but she said an affordable location was not available.

Dee said PEAK for Kids will continue to hold activities in the Kaneland area, including an after-school program that will start at Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove this fall.

His education was at St. Patrick School, Lincoln, Illinois, 1936-1946; St. Bede Academy, Peru, Illinois, 1946-1948; St. Bede College, Peru, 1948-1950; St. Ambrose College, Davenport, Iowa, 1950-1952; Our Lady of the Lake Seminary, Mundelein, 1952-1956.

Fitzsimmons was ordained May 27, 1956. He was assistant pastor at St. Roch’s, LaSalle, 1956; pastor, St. Patrick’s, Wapella and St. Mary’s, Downs, 1968; vicor adjutor, St. Roch’s, LaSalle, 1970; pastor, Resurrection, LaSalle, 1979; St. Mary’s, Westville, 1984; Holy Cross, Mendota, 1988; College of Consultors, 1990; pastor Holy Cross, Mendota and Sts. Peter and Paul, Peterstown, 1991; vicar, LaSalle vicariate, 1992; prelate of honor, 1993; senior priest status and pastor emeritus, 2000.

He is survived by many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and his caregivers, the Albright family of Batavia.

Village plans ‘Shop Elburn’ promotion

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Elburn village officials this month continue their work to jumpstart an initiative promoting local businesses.

The Shop Elburn First Campaign would be an ongoing event featuring businesses in the village, said Erin Willrett, village administrator. Talks about the campaign began in May and were led

by Pat Leach of the village’s economic development commission.

The commission plans to partner with the Elburn Chamber of Commerce for the effort.

The goal is to get not only outside visitors to Elburn businesses, but its own residents, as well.

“The commission members

want people to realize what’s [here] in their own backyard,” Willrett said Tuesday.

Willrett said shoppers have likely gotten into the habit of shopping along Randall Road or at big box stores.

Increased business activity in Elburn will keep it a vibrant place, she said.

One part of the campaign will involve a discount card listing discounts and offers with Elburn businesses, similar to what local athletic teams sell in the village, according to a recent committee staff report.

Another aspect of the campaign might be reusable bags that include a Shop Elburn First logo. Committee members have reached out to graphic designers they have worked with in the past from the area to see if they’d be willing to create the logo.

A crash involving an all-terrain vehicle and two motorcycles Tuesday afternoon on Read Road, near Lily Lake, resulted in two victims being taken from the scene in separate helicopters, said Tate Haley, assistant fire chief of the Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District.

The incident took place at about 2:30 p.m. in the area of 45W740 Read Road.

According to information provided by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, three male teenagers were riding off-road vehicles in the roadway.

One of the teens on a motorcycle appears to have stopped for an unknown reason and was struck from behind by the teen on the ATV, Lt. Chris Collins of the sheriff’s office wrote in an email.

Collins said the third teen was not involved but stopped to render aid. Collins said the ATV came to rest on one of the teens.

The two teens involved suffered head injuries.

The truth revealed about MERS virus THE WASHINGTON POST For many months in 2012 and 2013, Saudi Arabia reassured the world that it was paying close attention to the outbreak of a novel coronavirus in the kingdom, known as Middle East respiratory syndrome, or MERS. But events this year have begun to pull back the curtain on a disease outbreak that was – and remains – dangerous and not fully explained or explored. This is more than just an accident, and the Saudi authorities are finally waking up to the full extent of the lapses, just in time for the pilgrimages that are expected to bring millions to Mecca and Medina in the months ahead.

There is no known antiviral or vaccine for the MERS virus. So far it does not appear to transmit rapidly among humans in a way that could create a pandemic, although some transmission has occurred among those in close contact.

It has infected 701 people and killed 287 in Saudi Arabia, with additional cases elsewhere. Public health experts have been puzzled and frustrated for most of the past two years about why so little information about the virus and the outbreak was coming out of Saudi Arabia, governed as a closed society by rulers who do not permit – and often punish – dissent.

Now the Ministry of Health has made a startling admission: The number of cases in Saudi Arabia was undercounted by 113, or about 20 percent, according to Reuters.

The new cases were found in a review of records and included 92 deaths. The Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota quotes Tariq Madani, head of the scientific advisory board at the Saudi Ministry of Health, as saying that many of the cases were confirmed by government hospitals and labs that didn’t notify the ministry of the results.

This is an alarming systemic failure and speaks volumes about such a closed society: People and institutions react out of fear and keep painful information secret from each other. The consequences of coverup can be grave. Clearly there were many more people infected with MERS in Saudi Arabia’s health care system last year than the world knew. Some labs and hospitals had the facts but kept quiet. Without a free and open media or other channels to reveal the truth, the secret lay undisclosed. Only when a major outbreak appeared this spring in a hospital in Jiddah did the government begin to react by firing the health minister and pledging more openness. Since then, more data have been forthcoming, but gaps remain. Much more needs to be learned about the origin and behavior of the virus, which appears to stem from camels.

There is a lesson for the whole world here: Secrecy greatly multiplied the danger of the disease. The first line of defense in the months ahead must be absolute transparency.

During the regular academic year, the Center for High School Partnerships is busy managing the college’s Dual Credit Program. Dual credit describes any instance where an academically qualified high school student enrolls in a college-level course and – upon successful course completion – earns both high school and college credit.

Dual credit is gaining popularity both locally and nationally, and for good reason. It can help ease students’ transition from high school to college-level work, while also providing a leg up when it comes to college admissions decisions, scholarship applications, etc.

These courses also are a great way to keep high school juniors and seniors challenged and engaged in the learning process.

Last year, Waubonsee had more than 3,000 dual credit enrollments from students at our 11 area partner high schools: East and West Aurora, Batavia, Oswego and Oswego East, Somonauk, Geneva, the Fox Valley Career Center, Indian Valley Career Center, Kaneland and Rosary.

All dual credit courses are

delivered through one of two models. In the first model, the class is taught at the high school by a high school teacher who is qualified and approved as an adjunct instructor by Waubonsee. In this situation, students only pay a service fee of $8 a credit hour. In the second model, the class is taught at the high school or at a Waubonsee campus by a Waubonsee instructor, with students paying full college tuition and fees.

Many dual credit offerings are general education classes designed to transfer to fouryear colleges and universities.

Some classes give students the chance to explore and prepare for a particular career area, such as fire science, criminal justice, business or

health care.

In the future, the Center for High School Partnerships hopes to expand dual credit offerings at partner high schools and develop new programs to meet the needs and demands of our partner high schools and students.

GENEVA – The Geneva School District’s preschool assessment screening is set for Aug. 29 at Friendship Station, 1415 Viking Drive, Geneva. State law indicates that all children with qualifying disabilities between the ages of 3 and 5 must be provided with programs appropriate to their needs.

The school district must offer an annual screening of these children in order to determine need and eligibility for services. Eligible children must be preschool age and reside within the district.

School District 304 is providing a free screening to assess development in the following areas: vision and hearing, speech and language, cognitive and motor, and social and emotional.

This screening is optional. It is not a requirement for enrolling in preschool and is not designed to determine kindergarten readiness.

Appointments are necessary and students must register in advance. Proof of residency is required.

Waubonsee seeks to meet the educational needs of district residents of all ages.

In 2013, the college created its Center for High School Partnerships to better meet the needs of local high school districts and their students.

Two of the center’s biggest programs are the High School Summer Program and the Dual Credit Program, which allow students to earn high school and/or college credit.

The High School Summer Program offers the opportunity for area students to earn high school credit at an accelerated pace.

Some are looking to recover credit from a failed class, while others are gaining extra credits to free up their fall/spring schedules or even graduate early.

Animal Control looking to fill job vacancies

By NATALIE WICKMAN nwickman@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A proposal to create three part-time kennel assistant jobs for Kane County Animal Control was sent to the Finance and Budget Committee on Tuesday during the Public Health Committee meeting.

The kennel assistant position is currently one vacant full-time job, but Barb Jeffers, executive director of the Kane County Health Department, said splitting up the work would keep her weekday-only employees from working overtime. The proposal would result in a $5,000 budget reduction, Jeffers said. The health department oversees Animal Control.

“The animals have to be cared for and cleaned every day, which is why we’re open on weekends,” Jeffers said.

“You have to always have coverage of two people at the shelter for the safety of the animals and people.”

The weekend shifts are four hours a day, on Saturdays and Sundays, except for holidays.

Jeffers said three part-time employees also will reduce

scheduling problems if someone is sick or on vacation.

She said she thinks college students are good candidates for the possible part-time positions.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen applauded Jeffers’ overtime work in light of recent resignations, including the former kennel assistant and Animal Control administrator Robert Sauceda, who abruptly resigned in May. “It’s a real credit to your strength and intelligence,” Lauzen said to Jeffers.

Jeffers said interviews are being conducted to fill the Animal Control director position.

“We’re looking for someone with experience in operations and managing a preferably government department,” Jeffers said. “Someone who’s familiar with the ordinances and [statutes] of animal care.”

Jeffers said she will reach out to trade schools and universities with animal sciences programs to find more candidates.

“We have a lot of candidates who have part of [the wanted qualities] and some who don’t, but we’re hopeful,” Jeffers said.

LOCAL BRIEF Fox River Trolley Museum to host ‘Bargain Day’ SOUTH ELGIN – “Red, White and Blue Bargain Day” will be July 4 at the Fox River Trolley Museum, 365 S. La Fox St., South Elgin.

The event will celebrate America’s birthday and the Fox River Trolley Museum’s birthday, which was July 4, 1966, the day the museum first offered rides to the public. The entire family and friends can ride for $2. Normally, the museum charges $4 for adults, $3 for seniors and $2 for children ages 3 through 11.

Troop, a Michigan State-bound senior, close to untouchable

M

armion baseball coach Dave Rakow spouts Alex Troop’s 2014 statistics by memory these days.

Recite “5-0 with a 0.13 ERA and 103 strikeouts in 53 innings” often enough and it gets to be clockwork, not unlike the way Troop retired hitters in a shutdown senior season.

Still, Rakow finds the most important number surrounding the recently graduated left-hander from Batavia appears not on a stat sheet, but a birth certificate.

Troop, the Kane County Chronicle Baseball Player of the Year, won’t turn 18 until July 19.

“He doesn’t even shave yet. He’s young for his class.

Once he matures and fills out, his velocity is only going to go up,” Rakow said. “He’s one of those guys who the sky is the ceiling. He might be throwing upper-90s when it’s all said and done.”

Troop’s fastball velocity hovered around 86 to 87 mph in 2014, a touch better than last season and the season before that.

His success hinged in part on his primary pitch, to be sure, although an improved change-up and curveball made Troop elite.

Troop’s nine starts included a combined no-hitter against Wheaton Academy and a one-hitter against Aurora Christian in which he fanned 16 Eagles after allowing a leadoff double.

He strived to mix it up each time, mostly because he now could.

“In the past, I haven’t had the velocity that I’ve had now, so I’ve always tried to work really hard on my breaking balls and really developed them over time,” Troop said. “Now that the velocity has been added on, I have those to back me up

That confidence accompanies Troop in the field and at the plate, as Rakow called him “our best center fielder, our best first baseman and our best pitcher.” Troop also batted .333 (25 for 75) with 13 extra-base hits and 24 RBIs, easily giving him the biggest on-field influence on the Cadets’ fourth Suburban Christian Conference championship in five seasons.

As he prepares for a collegiate career at Michigan State – despite scores of scouts following him this spring, he was not selected in this month’s Major League Player First-Year Player Draft – Troop figures his hitting days could be over.

If that’s the case, he’ll

cling to his summer at-bats with Lemont-based Team DeMarini even tighter. He is filling the same pitcher-center fielder-first baseman role in travel ball, and is set to compete in a tournament in Florida this week after spending last week in Cincinnati.

“It’s going to be rough one day when I’m just going to be a pitcher, so I like to hit as much as I can and stay in the game and just be involved as much as possible,” Troop said.

Offseason workouts with R.C. Lichtenstein – pitching coach of the Tampa Bay Rays’ Double-A affiliate in Montgomery, Alabama – kept Troop sharp over the winter.

He alternated pitching and hitting sessions with Lichtenstein, who spends his offseasons in the suburbs,

until spring training opened in February.

Meanwhile, Troop followed Rakow’s offseason team weight training program and added intensity to his own workouts. In the two winters before his senior year, Troop put on about 25 pounds of muscle. He will enter college at about 6-foot-5 and 195 pounds.

“It was just fun watching him the whole season,” said Cadets right-hander Jake Esp, a junior from Sugar Grove. “I’ve got to try to be better than him next year.”

Troop knows he’ll keep a pulse on the Cadets then. The program is deeply linked, something Troop relearned in the winter when a fellow former Marmion ace from Batavia, Miami Marlins prospect Matt Milroy, hung around ahead of spring

training.

Milroy, whose brother, Tim, assisted Rakow this season, spoke with Troop about his experience in the minors and his time at Illinois, Michigan State’s Big Ten Conference rival.

Milroy held Marmion’s previous ERA and strikeout records before Troop broke them. The Boston Red Sox drafted him out of high school, but he did not sign.

As Troop sees it, going undrafted only affords him the opportunity to improve. And time to buy that figurative razor and shaving cream.

“The fact that I am so young and everyone’s taking a chance on what I could be in four years instead of what I am right now, I guess I like that,” Troop said. “It’s good to hear. Just see how things develop.”

22 Vollbrecht’s first football

offer is one to remember Loudon Vollbrecht didn’t waste his second chance to make a first impression.

The Geneva football junior offensive tackle said he wasn’t at school a couple months ago when a University of Illinois assistant coach dropped by for a visit, but Vollbrecht made up for lost time last week.

He attended a one-day camp in Champaign on Friday, and performed well enough to draw a scholarship offer from the Illini on Monday. It was the first offer for the 6-foot-7, 298-pound Vollbrecht, who said it “means a lot” for his first offer to come from the in-state Illini.

Vollbrecht said there were about 16 junior linemen at last week’s camp and another eight or 10 seniors.

“I felt pretty good about it but then again it was the first camp I went to all summer for football so I hadn’t run many 40s or anything,” Vollbrecht said. “My time wasn’t the best, but it still was a good [showing] and it showed my athletic ability as well as my football strengths.”

While the Illini’s offer carries weight, Vollbrecht intends to let his recruitment run its course. He said he might attend an upcoming camp at Michigan State, and North Carolina State and Syracuse are among the other Division I programs that are keeping tabs on Vollbrecht.

“It’s definitely enjoyable but it’s still kind of mind-blowing to think about because going into my junior year, a lot more can happen, but you never know,” Vollbrecht said.

Vollbrecht possesses a striking combination of strength and agility. His footwork likely has been enhanced by doubling as a basketball player. As a sophomore, he was part of the post rotation for a Vikings basketball team that advanced to a sectional championship game, and he’s dividing time between football and basketball training this summer.

“The only thing that’s tough I guess is not putting too much stress on certain body parts, like my knees, or not getting enough sleep

Vollbrecht’s offer from Illinois on Monday came the same day as Vikings senior receiver Pace Temple fielded a scholarship offer from Wyoming. Geneva quarterback Daniel Santacaterina committed to Northern Illinois in the spring.

Santacaterina, Temple and Vollbrecht were all key components of a robust Geneva offense last season, and given the trio’s recent recruiting activity, the spotlight will shine even brighter this fall.

“We have a lot of athleticism,” Vollbrecht said. “Our team is going to be great this next year. It definitely gives me more motivation to block more and harder and everything and be a better player because I’m blocking for some of the best people in the state, which shows with their offers.”

Switching sports: Geneva boys basketball senior forward Nate Navigato has drawn recruiting interest from Drake and Wright State, and Navigato visited both schools within the past few days for camps, according to his AAU program, Mercury Elite.

Navigato recently received a scholarship offer from Lehigh, and previously was offered by Illinois-Chicago, Northern Illinois and South Dakota State. Loyola, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Western Illinois also are keeping in touch.

Meanwhile, Wheaton Academy guard Josh Ruggles – Navigato’s Mercury Elite teammate – recently visited Northeastern in Boston, with Princeton, Dartmouth and Wofford among the other D-I programs eyeing the sharpshooter.

Not so perfect end to dream season for Holm, Bulldogs

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Matt Holm needed a few days to fully grasp the significance of the Batavia baseball season, which still carried plenty of weight despite an unplanned finish.

The Bulldogs won a program-best 23 consecutive games en route to an Upstate Eight Conference River Division title and a school-record 32 victories.

The finality of falling short of a coveted state title especially struck those who played under Holm, the Kane County Chronicle Baseball Coach of the Year.

A senior-laden team lost the Class 4A Schaumburg Sectional final to eventual third-place finisher South Elgin, but in Holm’s view, the work and passion the Bulldogs displayed well before that entitled them to hurt.

“Every coach knows you have to have the talent to do

the things that you set expectancy and goals for, you know, and then your part as a coach is just to get them that vision and work hard toward it,” Holm said. “If you don’t have the talent, you’re going to come up short. If you don’t have the drive, you’re going to come up short. If you don’t have the smarts, you’re going to come up short. “ T h e group had all of those Matt Holm things, as we did last year.

You work so hard, and I just want to reiterate you deserve the sting that you feel when you’re done and you didn’t quite reach what you were trying to reach.”

Batavia, the sectional’s top seed, finished 32-4-1 one spring after losing its postseason opener despite another lofty postseason ranking.

Knowing such an experienced core was returning – namely a trio of Division I recruits in third baseman Micah Coffey (Minnesota), center fielder Laren Eustace (Indiana) and left-hander/ first baseman Jacob Piechota (Western Michigan) – fueled the Bulldogs’ confidence.

It predated the first indoor winter workouts by several weeks.

Holm, also the defensive coordinator for Batavia’s defending Class 6A state football champions, still grins about a throng of football-baseball hybrids approaching him amid the postgame bedlam at Northern Illinois’ Huskie Stadium.

“Several guys came up to me right after the game, even at Northern and are saying, ‘OK, now it’s time to get the next one,’ “ Holm said. “I’m like, ‘Hey, wait a minute.

Let’s enjoy this, you know.’ ”

He said he feels healthy and has much more stamina than he did a year ago, which he believes has played a vital role in his success.

He said he has focused on avoiding mistakes this year, and hopes that continued focus pays off in the second half of the season.

“I’m working a lot on just learning how to read guys, and just take it step by step to get better each day,” Blackburn said. “I know you can’t be perfect every night, but I just need to limit mistakes as best as I can. Hopefully, I can continue to improve and have a great second half.”

Naturally, both players would love to one day be in the Major League Baseball spotlight, but for now, they will enjoy this all-star moment and go from there.

“I just want to have fun with it and take advantage of the chance to be around great players,” Hankins said. “It’s all about enjoying the moment.”

Blackburn, one of the top young pitching prospects in the Cubs’ organization, has similar thoughts.

“I’ll pay a little bit of attention to the hitters, but mostly, it’s all about having fun here,” Blackburn said. “I’d love to make it to the top some day, but you have to live in the present, take it step by step and see what happens.”

MIAMI – That didn’t take long.

Just 12 days after he was drafted No. 4 overall – and four days after making his professional debut – Cubs slugging prospect Kyle Schwarber was promoted Tuesday night from short-season Boise to Class Kyle A Kane CounSchwarber ty.

“Everybody’s excited about the start he’s had,” Cubs manager Rick Renteria said. “Hopefully, it continues for him.”

Schwarber, a lefty-hitting catcher/outfielder from Indiana University, hit two more home runs for Boise on Tuesday afternoon before getting the word of his promotion.

In what didn’t seem like a fair fight with Northwest League pitching, Schwarber went 12 for 20 with four home runs, 10 RBIs and a 1.975 onbase-plus-slugging percentage in his five games with Boise.

If the NWL season lasted five games he would have won the Triple Crown.

Initially set to open summer ball two days later, Holm and Co. appreciated the gesture from would-be opposing coach Len Asquini of St. Charles East, who suggested the teams reschedule.

A family getaway this past weekend helped Holm reset

himself for the summer juggling act of football workouts in the morning and baseball in the afternoon. Dave Rakow, who played under Holm at Batavia and now coaches Marmion, knew his mentor wouldn’t be devoid of wisdom for long.

“He’s somebody, whenever I do have a question or

issue or anything like that.

I don’t hesitate to give him a call,” Holm said. “He’s always made himself very available.”

His getaway notwithstanding, Holm admits to a lingering feeling the Bulldogs share that they should have been at Joliet’s Silver Cross Field for the state tour-

nament this past weekend.

That goal was not to be, but Holm knows his players are equipped to move past the disappointment.

“It is what it is. It happens,” Holm said. “But we felt we were on a little bit more of a mission than that, and all of a sudden, it was gone, you know.”

– Jordan Hankins has been blessed as a baseball player.

He played at the collegiate level at Austin Peay and was a member of the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team two years ago.

On Tuesday night at West Michigan’s Fifth Third Ballpark, Hankins was part of the Midwest League All-Star Game, representing Kane County on the Western Division team, which defeated the East Division, 7-0, in front of a crowd of 7,046.

Before taking batting practice earlier in the day, Hankins stood outside the team clubhouse and assessed his latest baseball opportunity.

“It’s humbling,” said Hankins, a reserve third baseman for the West. “It’s a great experience to be here and I am just thankful to be a part of it.

It’s awesome.”

Hankins, a three-year starter at Austin Peay, was one of two Cougars at West Michigan on a warm summer night. Teammate Paul Blackburn, a pitcher for the West, was also at the game.

Hankins flew out and struck out in his two trips to the plate. Blackburn did not get into the game.

Like Hankins, Blackburn

soaked up the experience.

“It’s definitely a big honor to represent my team and the league,” Blackburn said.

“There is a lot of talent here, and I’m just glad I’m one of the guys who gets to be a part of it.”

Hankins was drafted in the 11th round by the Cubs in 2013 and this is his first goround in the Midwest League.

It’s been quite a season for him so far as he closed out the first half third in the league in batting with a .322 average.

His effort helped the Cougars clinch the first-half title with a 45-25 record.

“Baseball is a lot more fun when you win,” Hankins said.

“Everyone on our team has worked well together. It’s cool to be one of the guys who has been able to help contribute to our success.”

Early on, it didn’t look like Hankins would be a key contributor for the Cougars, let alone an all-star selection.

“You just have to keep grinding, keep working, and the results will show up,” Hankins said. “I got a lot of help from a great coaching staff. Those guys never let you stop working. It made a big difference.”

Blackburn, who owns a 5-2 record and a 2.78 ERA through one half of the season, was a 2012 draft pick out of Heritage High School in California. He was the 56th pick overall.

VIEWS Hub Arkush The first day of the Bears’ minicamp had a decidedly offensive feel to it as offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer was made available to the media after practice and quarterback Jay Cutler spoke for the first time since signing his megabucks free-agent contract in January.

Appropriate, I guess, as media and Bears fans everywhere continue to advance the theory that the Bears suddenly are an offensive juggernaut with nothing to worry about on that side of the ball.

Cutler seems ready to at least sip the Kool-Aid. “We did OK last year, for the first year. We have the same guys we had last year, which is always good,” Cutler said. “Talentwise, it’s hard to top our O-line and some of the guys we have on the outside and Matt Forte, who is hugely underrated. Talentwise and being in the system two years and the way the guys work, all that adds up.”

Kromer is cautious about pumping up his offense too much, but certainly pleased with what he’s seeing so far.

“As an overall offense, I feel like the knowledge of what we’re trying to get done is getting greater and greater. That’s what’s big in the offseason. We’re in shorts.

We don’t have full pads on, the full blocking, the full tackling, all the things that make football, football can’t happen in these periods.”

Caution is good because, the truth is, the Bears are not yet the offensive machine fans would like, and they probably are not in the same league as the Broncos, Patriots, Eagles and a few other clubs. Not yet

There is no denying the talent the Bears possess at the skill positions and no reason to assume they can’t take the next step. But ...

The Bears were second in the league in points scored last year but that was with Josh McCown starting five games and playing the bulk of the Redskins game during which the Bears averaged 29.5 points.

With Cutler as the primary signal-caller, the Bears averaged 26.8 points, which would have ranked them eighth.

Marc Trestman expects Cutler to take another step forward.

Jordan Mills and Eben Britton was far more impressive than any of their individual performances.

And the fact that they play Britton so much as a sixth offensive linemen and usually block four with six and five with seven or even eight now is on tape over the course of an entire season and it will be interesting to see how opponents react.

There also, of course, are the issues of health and depth.

Every Bears starter on offense except Cutler started 16 games last year and that is extremely unusual at best. Will they be that lucky this year, and have they improved the depth at running back, tight end and receiver enough if they’re not?

‘The Grand Seduction’: A cozy tale of a fish out of water

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post Cozy, picturesque and soothingly reassuring, “The Grand Seduction” plays like a cross between “Doc Martin” and “Local Hero,” a fish-out-of-water fable set within a fabulously scenic backdrop, against which wholesome humor and a thoroughgoing humanist streak play out and intertwine with gentle, unforced ease.

Of course, the aforementioned “Local Hero” – Bill Forsythe’s brilliant comedy of dislocation that came out in 1983 – is still unmatched for sheer atmosphere, acuity and heart. But “The Grand Seduction” makes for a pretty fair successor.

The story of a tiny fishing village in Newfoundland that tries to hoodwink an American plastic surgeon into becoming the town doctor comes by way of gifted Canadian filmmakers, including co-screenwriter Ken Scott (“Starbuck”) and director Don McKellar (“Last Night”).

The great Brendan Gleeson – who resembles a ruddier Steve Earle as Murray, the bearded fisherman who masterminds the doc plot – and Taylor Kitsch, playing Paul, his unsuspecting mark, develop a

warm, amusing chemistry in the course of a story that lilts its way toward a far too pat happy ending.

Kitsch, who can currently be seen in HBO’s outstanding movie version of “The Normal Heart,” is particularly impressive as a handsome, somewhat shallow pretty boy who comes to love the run-down but gorgeous settlement where he treats everything from creeping athlete’s foot to nasty cuts and scrapes.

As appealing as the two leads are, however, the true stars of “The Grand Seduction” are the local oddballs and characters who conspire to keep Dr. Paul in their clutches, staging an elaborate game of cricket (his favorite sport) and even listening in to his calls home to ascertain his likes and dislikes. The trope of small-town-quirk may be so hackneyed that it begs to be retired permanently, but Scott – working with fellow screenwriter Mike Dowse – keeps the self-conscious cutesy-ness to a gratifying minimum.

McKellar, for his part, errs on the side of underplaying the inherent adorability of “The Grand Seduction,” which results in occasionally slack pacing but also lets the jokes unfold at their own unhurried

and ultimately very funny pace. The laughs don’t come rat-a-tat-tat, but cumulatively, as the good people of Tickle Cove go about tarting up their town, planting money for Paul to find, earnestly offering him the cocaine they think he’s craving (“We’re down with it!” Murray helpfully informs him) and pretending to like jazz.

The subtext to it all is that a group of dispossessed men – fishermen now forced to rely on welfare checks, an ambitious young doctor whose values have gotten out of whack – rediscover their sense of identity and purpose, in this case by way of a plot development that not every viewer will find particularly salutary. Still, even with the odd misgiving or two, “The Grand Seduction” will effortlessly charm anyone susceptible to an endearing story told with modesty, wit and unprepossessing sweetness.

Seductions don’t always have to be grand in order to work.

• “The Grand Seduction” received two-and-a-half stars out of four. The film is rated PG-13 and contains some suggestive material and drug references.

It runs 112 minutes.

Typical migraine sufferer doesn’t require brain scan Dear Doctor K: I regularly get terrible migraine headaches. My doctor has prescribed medication, but I still think I should have a brain scan to make sure there’s nothing more serious going on.

Dear Reader: Severe headaches cause both misery and fear. Obviously, the fear is that something serious, like a brain tumor, may be causing the headache.

Still, the pain of even a severe headache rarely comes from something catastrophic like a tumor. I spoke to my colleague Dr. Egilius Spierings, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital, about migraines and brain scans.

He said that fear of a sinister, unidentified cause often drives people to get brain scans. According to a report published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, about one in 10 people who seek care for severe headaches end up having a brain scan. The great majority of the scans find nothing wrong.

Brain scans themselves are not risk-free. Repeated computed tomography (CT) scans, for example, expose you to radiation that can raise the risk of cancer down the road. Scans can also lead to more scanning if the test turns

Only a very small percentage of brain scans reveal something abnormal. And most of these “abnormalities” just look a little odd – they won’t affect your health.

You and your doctor should focus on finding an effective treatment for your migraine headaches. If he or she has not already prescribed them, ask your doctor about triptans. These drugs can stop a migraine within two hours if you take the drug when the headache is still mild. If your migraine doesn’t stop within two hours, your doctor should direct you to take more medication. Also ask your doctor about other medications that can help prevent future migraine attacks.

So, when might a brain scan be in order? Red flags that should cause you to talk to your doctor include: • Not having had headaches before. Migraine headaches often begin early in life. They can be really severe, sending a person

to bed. But if today’s headache is just like, and just as bad, as your typical migraines, it is very unlikely to be due to something else.

Be concerned if you’re over age 50 and start having headaches for the first time.

• Headaches that worsen over a few weeks. Migraine attacks typically end completely in hours or days. Be concerned if you have a headache that is with you all the time, day after day.

• A headache that comes on in seconds. A brain hemorrhage – a potentially very serious cause of headache – typically begins like a bolt out of the blue. Five minutes ago you were perfectly fine, and now you’re in agonizing pain.

• Headache associated with fever.

• Headache associated with weakness of a part of the body, new difficulty with balance or feeling confused.

Most headaches, even really bad ones, won’t benefit from a scan. But watch for the danger signs I’ve mentioned; they could require a scan.

Dear Teens: Do you lay off junk foods, get proper rest, exercise, and ration your TV-watching time?

If your answer is yes, congratulations! But you are the exception, not the rule.

According to a study in The Journal of The American Medical Association, U.S. children 18 and younger are adding unwanted pounds at an alarming rate. In the past decade, the percentage of significantly overweight children has almost doubled.

In prior studies, it took 30 years for the overweight percentage to double. This is an alarming statistic.

Among the reasons given for this increase: spending too much time watching television, using computers and playing video games, and parents who feed their families with fast food more often than home cooking.

Just a reminder: Obese teens usually spend their entire lives being overweight!

Dr. Wallace: My mom and my dad and my grandmother, who lives with us, are all addicted to tobacco. One good thing is that they respect my request and they don’t smoke in our house. All three say they wish they had never started, but they still puff away.

I’ve begged them to stop smoking, and they all said that they want to stop smoking, and they have tried, but trying isn’t good enough. I’m afraid if I don’t convince them to stop smoking forever, that I could lose one of them, or even all of them, just when I would need them the most. They each smoke at least a pack of cigarettes daily.

Next, contact your local American Lung Association and American Cancer Society (check the phone book for addresses and phone numbers) for free booklets on the health hazards of smoking and how to quit this highly addictive and expensive habit. Share the booklets with your family. Twice a week, select an appropriate pamphlet and spend half an hour or so with them reading and discussing the material, especially when tips for quitting are the topic.

As you’ve probably discovered, pleading, begging and nagging a smoker to quit just doesn’t work. It takes a smoker’s total commitment to overcome nicotine – but it can be done!

Oh, yes, I forgot to put the stop-smoking challenge into dollars and cents. Since the cost of cigarettes keeps increasing due to the added state and city taxes, even smoking one pack a day really puts a dent in a wallet or a purse. And with three smokers in the house, that’s a lot of money going up in smoke!

There are two answers to that question: Cash the club ace to save the overtrick or take two club tricks! It all depends upon East. He should realize that his side needs two heart and two club winners. So it must be right to ruff his partner’s heart king and shift to a club. As you can see, this is the only way to defeat the contract.

Purnell is the host of the exhibit. As a teacher at John Stewart in Elburn, Gilkey said she has helped bring the display to the Town and Country Public Library in Elburn in the past. She said it’s a great honor that the district has so many pieces of art in the display.

“I think it just goes to show what a great art program we have,” Gilkey said. “There are hundreds of entries throughout the whole state of Illinois.”

gallery to their area each year. The display started its journey in November in Burbank, with stops throughout the state. In July, it heads to Lake Zurich, and the display ends its run in Lisle.

Gilkey said the display often will make its way to the area, whether in the Kaneland area or the Tri-Cities area. When it’s nearby, she said it’s a big attraction for local art teachers.

“I check everything out,” she said. “It gives teachers some great ideas.”

Plans for local festivals have been taking shape. In Sugar Grove, organizers have been releasing information about the annual Corn Boil, which is set from July 25 to 27 at 61 Main St., Sugar Grove. The band lineup has been set. Also, participants are being sought for the “Happy Dance” at the opening ceremony, which will be from 5 to 6 p.m. July 25. The theme for the opening ceremonies will be “Kindness in the Community.” The dance will be in partnership with P.E.A.K. for Kids and LaFox-based Dreams Dance Academy.

In Elburn, the Village Board on Monday OK’d a resolution to close Route 47 for the Elburn Days parade, which is set for 6 p.m. Aug. 15. The festival, which is presented by the Elburn Lions Club, takes place from Aug. 15 to 17 at Lions Park, 500 S. Filmore St., Elburn.
