Shaw Media to acquire Kendall County weeklies SHAW MEDIA DIXON – Shaw Media, owner of the Kane County Chronicle, announced today it is buying Record Newspapers Inc. from Jeff and Kathy Farren.

Based in Yorkville, The Record Newspapers include the Kendall County Record in Yorkville, the Ledger-Sentinel in Oswego, the Plano Record and the Sandwich Record, as well as affiliated websites.

“We are proud to welcome The Record Newspapers to

our growing portfolio of family-owned, community-focused media operations,” Shaw Media President John Rung said. “We look forward to continuing the Farrens’ tradition of quality local journalism, while expanding the Ledger-Sentinel’s and Records’ presence through digital formats.”

The transaction is expected to close June 26.

“We have always worked hard to provide extensive local news coverage of our communities. So we are pleased with Shaw Media’s commit-

ment to continue that level of coverage for our readers,” Kathy Farren, Record editor, said.

Founded in 1864, the Kendall County Record was bought by the Farrens in 1973. The Farrens founded the Plano Record in 1976. They acquired the Oswego Ledger in 1979 and the Fox Valley Sentinel in 1980. The two papers were consolidated and called the Ledger-Sentinel. The Sandwich Record was launched by the Farrens in 1985.

“The decision to sell was a difficult one,” Publisher Jeff

Farren said, but he added, “We believe Shaw will be able to continue providing good newspapers for our readers and advertisers with more online content in the future.”

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Founded in 1851, Shaw Media is the third-oldest continuously owned and operated media company in the U.S. It owns and operates newspapers, magazines, websites and other publications throughout Chicago’s suburbs and northern Illinois, as well as in Iowa.

Kane forest preserve district takes step toward buying Elburn parcel

alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – The Forest Preserve District of Kane County’s effort to buy a building on Route 47 in Elburn appeared to take a step forward Monday night at the Elburn Village Board meeting.

Two weeks ago, board members and Village President Dave Anderson voiced concerns about providing a green light for the project at 1001 S. Main St., which is the location of the former Patten rental facility. At that time, it was thought the location, which is on the east side of Route 47, just south of Keslinger Road, should be reserved for commercial development.

On Tuesday, Anderson said the most recent meeting produced progress toward the forest preserve’s goal. Drew Frasz, a Kane County Board

Al Lagattolla member from Elburn, was at the meeting as well, representing the forest preserve.

Kane County Board members also are forest preserve district commissioners.

Frasz said the forest preserve is seeking the village’s permission to buy the property because it is within the village’s limits and not adjacent to another piece of property owned by the forest preserve.

The forest preserve seeks to buy the property as the new home for the district’s Natural Resources Department.

The district is seeking to acquire two 9.14-acre parcels from Patten Enterprises. The north parcel is annexed into the village. The south parcel

is in unincorporated Kane County.

In exchange for the village’s permission, the forest preserve would provide help for several projects that would benefit Elburn. For instance, Anderson said there would be access from Johnson’s Mound to the Blackberry Creek subdivision. There would be some work done at the Elburn Forest Preserve.

The forest preserve district would help with a planned Third Street pedestrian bridge.

Also, to ease the concern over the commercial potential of the property, the district would have the ability to sell off both parcels in the future, according to a letter that Monica Meyers, the forest preserve district’s executive director, provided to the village.

“In the event there is a party interested in the vacant

parcel to the south, the parcel could be sold and the tax-exempt status reversed,” the letter states, adding the north parcel also could be sold, “possibly reversing the tax-exempt use of the property.”

Anderson indicated the item would be placed on the consent agenda for a future Elburn Village Board meeting. He said the property could become a large commercial area, but he said it also is good to help the forest preserve and get some benefit to the village, as well.

“We’d all like to have it as a viable sales-tax producer,” Anderson said. “But we also know that there are some benefits to be derived from the county taking care of their nature stuff there.”

Settler’s Hill plan gets mixed reaction from County Board

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Members of a Kane County Board committee Tuesday had mixed reactions to a proposed future use of Settler’s Hill.

The County Development Committee heard details from a market and feasibility study on opening a cross-country course at Settler’s Hill, a former landfill.

Although Chicago-based Hunden Strategic Partners said

the course could be a destination venue used for multiple annual events, board members took issue with initial projections showing the site operating with a deficit for multiple years.

Developing Settler’s Hill would cost an estimated $3.88 million, said Ethan Olson, senior analyst at Hunden. Without outside sponsorships and partnerships, the cross-country course would operate on a projected deficit of $146,000 in its first year and by its 10th year would operate with a $59,000

deficit, Olson said.

According to the financial projections provided by Hunden, the plan is a black hole, board member T.R. Smith, R-Maple Park, said.

Board member Mike Kenyon, R-South Elgin, said the presentation had lofty goals for a limited number of people.

“Right now, we couldn’t afford to run it as a loss,” Kenyon said.

Olson suggested the facility would need to be operated as a business by an expert in

cross-county to minimize the deficit or break even.

Board member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, said the plan would be great if it could recoup its costs. He used the Chicago Area Track and Field Organizing Committee as an example of a group that could manage the site.

Al Edgecombe, the organizing committee’s secretary and treasurer, spoke in favor of the plan during and after the presentation.

“There’s a need for

cross-country courses. ... I’d hate to see this opportunity evaporate,” Edgecombe said after the meeting.

The presentation was for the board committee’s information, but the full Kane County Board will have to make some decisions about paying for work on the project using enterprise funds later this year as the county continues its 2016 budgeting process, said Ken Anderson, director of the county’s division of environmental and water resources.

Kane County Farm Bureau program shows teachers what farm life is like

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com As more than a dozen teachers looked on, a machine slowly made its way up and down a field of turf grass at Dunteman’s Sod Farms in Kaneville. Large and noisy, the machine was efficient as it measured, cut up and gathered sections of the sod as part of the harvesting process.

It was part of the Kane County Farm Bureau’s Summer Ag Institute, a weeklong program that brings teachers onto farms.

The purpose, according to the farm bureau’s website, is teachers will “have the opportunity to apply new understanding in developing new and unique classroom lessons for easy integration into their curriculum.”

The teachers participating in last week’s program were from schools in St. Charles, Batavia, Aurora and Elgin.

Among the hosts were Dunteman’s farm, as well as the Maple Park-based Gould Farms, where teachers were able to learn about that farm’s hog operation. Those were just two of several stops throughout the week, and participants said they were able to check out farm equipment, drive tractors and see how McDonald’s Quarter Pounders are made.

Margo Quaintance, a librarian at Davis Primary School in St. Charles School District 303, said she had been urged by some teachers to take the course. As she reflected on some of the experiences of the week, she said she was glad she did.

Afterward, Rebecca Dunning, a first-grade teacher at Greenman Elementary School in West Aurora School District 129, said there was much she learned from the experience.

She said the teachers acquired information to bring back to their classrooms, adding it was useful because many students have not been on farms. Quaintance agreed, adding “some of our kids will never, ever, be on a farm.”

Another Greenman teacher, Danette Deligiannis, said kids can get a glimpse of farms, such as field trips to Blackberry Farm in Aurora, but that’s a different kind of experience than a modern, working farm.

“I wish there was more of an opportunity for kids to see it,” Deligiannis said.

At Gould Farms, participants listened to Chris Gould’s presentation on hog breeding.

He explained artificial insemination is the exclusive method, and he talked of how a boar will walk through a sow center, and how workers can tell from the sows’ reaction which ones are ready to breed. He said those at the farm do all they can to maintain comfort for the piglets, including maintaining a warmer environment for them, while the mother pigs near to them are in cooler conditions.

“It’s in our absolute best interest to keep the animals happy,” Gould said.

Among those in the group were Ryan Klassy, the farm bureau’s information director, and Suzi Myers, the bureau’s ag literacy coordinator.

Myers said this was an introductory course, and a second class also is available. She said there is a good reason to provide such opportunities. According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, the average American is now at least three generations removed from the farm. She said while it’s true that many students never had been on farms, she added many teachers haven’t had that opportunity, either.

Quaintance said the teachers enjoyed their participation.

She said when students have questions about farms, she can provide an improved answer.

“Now we can bring the farm to them, through our experiences,” Quaintance said.

provided oxygen, and emergency personnel were immediately called to the scene, according to Batavia Park District officials.

The lifeguards were present during the boy’s swimming test at the beach when he went underwater, according to a Batavia Fire Department news release. Anyone younger than 13 years of age or under 5 feet tall is required to pass a test to go into deep water, park district officials said.

“The guards responded in a professional, calm manner,” said recreation supervisor Amber Smith, who is in charge of Hall Quarry Beach. “Our guards do go through an extensive amount of training because of the set-up we have at the quarry.”

That training includes both deep water and shallow water rescue, and CPR, Smith said.

Hall Quarry Beach occupies a former stone quarry and features a sand-bottom swimming area.

“They are on top of their game,” Smith said.

Robinson also was honored in 2013 with three other Hall Quarry Beach lifeguards for the rescue of a 17-year-old patron.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Although Bonnie and David Phillips annexed into Campton Hills in 2014, they recently sought a disconnection from the village to accommodate changes to their property, which includes horse stables.

But at a special village board meeting Tuesday, officials said they favored changing the zoning and use of the Phillips’ property at 41W933 Beith Road – rather than have them disconnect.

“We have valued residents of the village, and we don’t want to lose them,” Village President Harry Blecker said. “Let’s figure out a way to make this [annexation] agreement work.”

Village attorney Julie Tappendorf said rezoning it to a farm use because it is surrounded by other farm property, and adding a special use and a text amendment would solve the Phillips’ land use problem and keep them in the village.

David Phillips said he and his wife sold 2.5 acres of their parcel, which con-

tained the farm homestead.

But when they sought to build a new home on the remaining 21 acres, the bank appraised it at 75 percent of the construction cost.

“Economics doesn’t permit us to live on the land,” David Phillips said. “I’m 67.

I can’t start over.”

The Phillips have two horses of their own and three belonging to friends boarded there. David Phillips said they live a mile away so they are close to the horses.

He said the village’s proposed solution will work for him.

“I think it’s more convoluted because they have to amend all their rules to make it applicable,” David Phillips said. “That is what they want to do – and we end up in the same place.”

In other business, Blecker swore in a new trustee, James McKelvie, to fill the vacancy left when he was elected village president.

Police Chief Daniel Hoffman swore in police officer Randy Johnson as a sergeant. Johnson has served on the Campton Hills police department since the village’s incorporation in 2007.

GENEVA – After nearly two hours of discussion, aldermen voted, 7-3, late Monday to recommend amending the historic preservation code to require the owner’s approval before property could be landmarked.

Aldermen continued their discussion of proposed amendments to Geneva’s historic preservation ordinance at a special Committee of the Whole meeting after the regular City Council meeting.

Those voting to keep the staff and preservationists’ recommendation of not requiring owner approval were 1st Ward Aldermen Tara Burghart and Mike Bruno, and 5th Ward Alderman Craig Maladra.

Bruno argued for not requiring owner consent before

landmarking, saying it had been used once in 32 years to preserve the Riverbank Laboratories. Bruno advocated for keeping it as a “tool of last resort” to save a historic building.

“There is no pattern of abuse,” Bruno said.

Burghart said landmarking against an owner’s wishes would require seven of the 10 aldermen to agree.

“I like the ordinance as presented because it’s fail-safe.

Seven of us would have to override the owner’s desire to landmark it,” Burghart said. “I trust all of you with that power to make a well-informed decision.”

Fermilab seeking public comment for experiment

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory spokesman Andre Salles on Monday provided Batavia officials an update about the laboratory’s latest experiment.

Salles spoke at Monday’s Batavia City Council meeting about the experiment, which will send a beam of neutrinos through the earth from Fermilab to the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. Neutrinos are elementary particles that have no electrical charge and are the most abundant particles in the universe, according to Fermilab officials.

With the data, scientists hope to learn more about the building blocks of matter and determine the exact role neutrinos play in the universe.

As part of the experiment, plans are to construct four buildings on the Fermilab site, one of which would be about 40 feet high and 160 feet long and be located near Kirk Road and Giese Road, Salles told city officials. That building would be connected via a vertical shaft to an underground hall about 200 feet be-

low the Fermilab site, Salles said.

The project also would include the construction of a 50to 60-foot-high hill about 1,000 feet from Kirk Road on the Fermilab site, as part of the facility that would create the neutrinos, Salles said.

Construction could begin as early as 2018, Salles said, with the experiment starting in 2025. The experiment would be on land not in the city, Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said.

“But we do want to know what is going on,” Schielke said.

The U.S. Department of Energy also is inviting the public to review and comment on the possible environmental effects of building and operating the experiment, called the Long Baseline Neutrino Facility, and the associated Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment.

A meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. June 24 in the atrium of Wilson Hall, the main building at Fermilab. During the meeting, Fermilab employees will explain the proposed project, the science it plans to accomplish and the specifics of the impacts listed in the environmental assessment.

The name comes from antiquer, meaning someone who antiques or frequents flea markets, said Ben Popp, 24, of Sugar Grove, who developed a free phone app called Annie Teekr.

“It’s a free app for flea market attendees and vendors, where they can post items for sale and surf items for sale according to their specific location,” Popp said.

“Once they download the app, they enter a ZIP code, and anything being sold in that area will pop up. They have the option to click ‘haggle’ if interested or click ‘not interested.’ ” If potential buyers choose to haggle, Popp said, they can use the app to contact the seller via phone or email to discuss price.

In addition to antiques, it serves as a buy-sell app for products in categories listed in a drop-down menu, Popp said. These include shopping, collectible, lifestyle, hobby, home, crafts, art, heirloom, flea market, auction,

souvenir, furniture, tools, jewelry and vintage, among others.

Popp also works as writer, having published educational children’s books for Amazon. He said he also works part-time as a security guard.

Popp said he got the idea to create an app for antiquing after going to a local flea market to look at antiques with a friend.

“A lot of these people – this is their only way of making a living,” Popp said. “I thought there has to be a way for them to sell their stuff ’round the clock. My app allows them to stay open virtually.”

Judge Susan Clancy Boles earlier this month approved Christopher A. Lee’s motion for a reduced bond, lowering the amount June 3 from $150,000 to $50,000, according to court records.

The initial bond was “excessive” and Lee’s family lacked the funds to pay it, Lee’s lawyer, Michael Bercos, wrote in the motion.

Bercos also sought a reduced bond for Lee, 29, because he had no prior convictions or arrests before the current charges.

Lee must not contact the student by any means, including social media, not go within 150 feet of her residence, have no unsupervised contact with minors under 18 and attempt to gain and maintain employment, court records state.

In the motion, Bercos wrote Lee intends to live with his parents in Chicago.

Once Lee was charged, the St. Charles School District 303 board voted unanimous-

ly to fire him. He was in his first year as a dean’s assistant at St. Charles North and had been an assistant basketball coach there for the past five seasons.

Lee’s next court date is July 10, according to court records.

Hazel L. Clauter, age 97 of Geneva passed away peacefully June 11, 2015. She was born to Herman and Myrtle (nee) Taylor Lindquist on the family farm in Mayfield Township, Kingston, IL in DeKalb County.

Hazel’s parents died within 6 months of each other between her 3rd and 4th birthdays. She was lovingly raised by her grandparents Fred and Sarah Catherine (nee) Yonkin Taylor of Genoa. Hazel was Valedictorian of the Genoa High School class of 1935. She graduated from the University of Chicago with a B.A. in Business Administration in 1939 and started her first career as a municipal bonds analyst for Barcus, Kindred & Co. on LaSalle St. in Chicago.

Hazel and Art were married August 2, 1941 in Chicago at the Thorndyke Chapel on the University campus. Her second career was raising their 3 children, first in Chicago and then ultimately in Geneva.

Hazel returned to school to obtain her teaching certificate from Northern Illinois University and taught 3rd grade at Lincoln School in St. Charles for 19 years. She fondly called this her third career.

Hazel and Art traveled extensively upon retirement in 1982.

A favorite trip included travel to Karlsham, Sweden, where she met her first cousins and other Swedish relatives of her father’s. Many wonderful summers were spent in Pitkin, Colorado, “on top” at their chalet at 11,000 feet.

Hazel was an active member of the P.E.O. sisterhood since 1953, Chapter FE, Geneva. Her passion was teaching young minds and helped establish the country school house at LeRoy Oaks Forest Preserve called Sholes School and served on the board of directors for many years. Hazel authored the book “Our Community St. Charles” which is still used in the curriculum. She was also involved in Preservation Partners, Geneva History Center, the United Methodist Church of Geneva and the lives of her children and grand children along with their 4 collie dogs and numerous cats the kids brought home. She had a way with flowers

A tow truck hit the side of a car near the intersection of Dean Street and Randall Road about noon Tuesday. The driver and passenger of the car suffered minor injuries, according to a St. Charles police officer at the scene. Officers suspect the accident occurred because of lanes merging in a construction zone.

Learning vital lab skills What do I want to be when I grow up? For many young adults, this is a daunting question. But for those who have an interest in science, an innovative new program from Waubonsee Community College may just be the answer.

The Laboratory Technology Program, funded through a federal Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training – or TAACCCT – grant, provides a unique approach to scientific career pathways and gives students a chance to experience the real work of laboratory operations right away.

Preparing for a career in science is academically demanding and typically involves a large amount of theory, accented by some hands-on lab exercises designed to demonstrate that theory.

Such training is great for developing critical thinking and for building a foundational understanding of scientific principles; in other words, it is designed for people who intend to pursue master or doctorate degrees in a scientific field.

In terms of preparing students for the routine and daily work of an entry-level scientist, however, this traditional educational model has some gaps.

Realizing that, Waubonsee faculty worked with a broad panel of local business and industry experts to develop a laboratory technology curriculum that bridges these gaps.

The experts told us they need people who understand the strict process requirements for routine lab work and who have a strong familiarity with the field’s sophisticated instru-

These local employers also need people who can recognize when an instrument reading seems wrong and know how to find the source of the problem.

They need people who appreciate the government regulations that guide the way work is conducted in a lab and who can act appropriately to make sure those rules are followed. These are skills that can only be fully developed through a combination of explicit explanation and sufficient practice opportunities.

Such skills not only make a person more employable, but they also make the world a better place. Lab technicians do important work – making water cleaner, making medicine tastier, making airplane wings stronger – in a variety of settings, including water treatment plants, food-flavoring companies, quality control labs, environmental labs, oil companies and more.

Waubonsee’s Laboratory Technology Program is the perfect place for students to gain highly desirable skills and prepare for a job in one of these many industries in just two years.

The park district’s Splash Country Water Park, at 195 S. Barnes Road in Aurora, and Phillips Park Family Aquatic Center, at 828 Montgomery Road, Aurora, will participate at 10 a.m. Thursday in The World’s Largest Swim Lesson. To encourage participation, the two water parks will offer free admission Thursday.

The swim lesson will begin at 10 a.m. and will last 30 minutes. It will focus on basic water safety skills.

Participants can register at either water park beginning at 9:15 a.m. Each registered participant will receive a wrist band that provides free admission.

The event is open to all ages and all swim levels. Children under the age of 6 must be accompanied by an adult in the water.

Team WLSL set its fifth Guinness World Record on June 20, 2014, with 36,564 participants from 22 countries.

The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson was founded by the World Waterpark Association in 2010 to communicate the importance of teaching children to swim.

According to organizers, drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1 to 14.

This is the first year the Fox Valley Park District will participate in the event. The park district serves Aurora, North Aurora and Montgomery.

Fox Valley Park District public relations manager Jeff Long said the event fits with the park district’s desire to make sure everyone knows how to swim.

“We’ve offered more free swim lessons over the years, to make them more accessible to everyone,” Long said.

“It is really a life skill.”

No rain date for the event has been set. It will go on, rain or shine, unless there is lightning in the area, Long said.

Fox River fire district faces cuts, will seek tax rate hike

said.

A captain, a lieutenant and three firefighter/paramedics left for better paying jobs, Gaffney said. None will be replaced, saving the district $240,000, Gaffney said. But that is not enough to cover the replacement cost of fire trucks at $450,000 and ambulances at $250,000 each, he said.

The fire district’s attorney, Ken Shepro, said equipment replacement is critical.

“This is not like, ‘I want a new car.’ You have to replace these things,” Shepro said. “They get an incredible amount of usage.”

Starting Wednesday, the district will operate with its remaining 21 personnel rearranged in shifts so all stations are covered, with no layoffs, Shepro said.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Officials at the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District are bracing for critical budget issues caused by the failure of an April referendum, they said.

Board President Jim Gaffney said the district would ask voters for an increase again, this time on the March 15 primary ballot in 2016. Voters defeated the rate hike request by a 3-1 margin in April, records show.

“If it doesn’t pass next March, then we will not meet payroll at all by 2017-18,” Gaffney said.

The board will consider a tentative 2015-16 budget that reflects reduced spending and deferring equipment replacement at its next meeting, 7

That’s when Michels plans to bring his selection before the Sugar Grove Village Board for final approval. Eight people, including some county of-

ficials, applied for the trustee vacancy.

“It’s nice to see that people are interested in serving the community,” Michels said.

“It was a good cross-section of people, and it’s refreshing to see that.”

In alphabetical order, the applicants were: Halle Cox, Kane County Law Library and Legal Self-Help Center director; Gayle Deja-Schultz, director of development and special events for the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago; John “Andy” Doyle, a former finance director for the city of Geneva; Suzanne Fahne-

stock, Kane County chief deputy clerk of elections; Carol Jolley, an insurance claims worker; Ted Koch, a current member of the village’s police pension board; Nichole Lamela, deputy director of Tri-Com; and Karen McCannon, also known as JoJo the Clown.

Whoever is selected and approved by the board will serve the remainder of Bohler’s term, which ends in April 2017.

Bohler, who had been battling cancer, announced his resignation from the board in April. He died April 26 at his home in Sugar Grove at age 64.

More than a name The WASHINGTON POST “I am not going to change who I am,” Jeb Bush declared last week, in the run-up to the official kickoff of his presidential campaign on Monday.

Bush couldn’t escape his most glaring personal detail – his last name – even if he wanted to. Yet for all the recent talk of family baggage and a stumbling start to his 2016 effort, Bush has a good shot at winning the Republican presidential nomination – because he is a strong conservative former swingstate governor – and of winning the general election after that – because he is the Republican presidential candidate who so far seems most interested in actually governing.

It is on these and other relevant characteristics, not his name, that voters should judge him.

In his Monday announcement speech, Bush pitched himself as an accomplished executive responsible for a raft of conservative reforms in Florida, his adopted home. “We will get back on the side of free enterprise and free people,” he said.

“I know we can fix this.

Because I’ve done it.”

Bush’s record has a lot that many Republicans should like. He cut taxes, slashed the state workforce and enacted a school voucher program. He ended affirmative action at state universities and approved a “stand your ground” justifiable homicide law, a policy that’s appealing to those ideologically committed to expansive gun rights.

Bush has not traded in his conservative card since, though it has meant falling behind the times on issues such as gay marriage, which

he firmly opposes.

On economic policy, he promised 4 percent annual growth and 19 million new jobs Monday, a pledge that circumstances might have some say over. He proposed a familiar GOP formula to deliver such growth: less regulation, less spending, leaner government and balanced budgets. On foreign affairs, Bush called for pumping up the military and standing behind allies, putting him well within the GOP mainstream.

Bush’s record couldn’t get much more conservative without repelling moderates in droves. Yet national polls show him struggling to pull ahead of his top rivals for the GOP nomination.

Part of his challenge is association with his brother, who didn’t tame spending to the degree many in the GOP retrospectively demand.

Bush also prides himself on his grown-up tone, and he has held fast to policies that are too reasonable for some elements of the Republican base. He has refused to follow the rest of the pandering GOP herd on the Common Core, voluntary state educational standards many conservatives oppose for no good reason. He favors a pathway to legal status for illegal immigrants.

Adding to the list of heresies, Bush also declined to put on Grover Norquist’s political straitjacket and sign the Club for Growth’s anti-tax hike pledge when he was governor.

Bush has the time and resources to hone his operation and message. He will have to convince GOP primary voters that conservative governing, not conservative tantrum-throwing, is what their party’s leader should be committed to.

To the Editor: It was an embarrassing day for rational and enlightened debate when, on the final day of the Illinois state legislative session, lawmakers passed a bill to open a trophy-hunting and trapping season on the state’s still-recovering bobcat population.

Although H.B. 352 was initially voted down, political arm-twisting by downstate legislators prompted a dozen lawmakers to flip-flop and secure enough votes to pass this ill-conceived bill. They are trying to conduct random, commercial killing of these shy and elusive creatures for the first time in more than 40 years.

And to what end?

slaughter? Nobody eats these beautiful cats, and they’re not posing any risk to public safety or livestock. In fact, they’re typically considered beneficial to farmers as their diet mainly consists of rodents.

It’s a shame that despite the myriad problems facing Illinois, some lawmakers chose to make passing this inhumane bill a priority, placing the interests of those who enjoy killing for killing’s sake and want to profit off of bobcat pelts above the vast majority of people in the

state, who want to maintain the policy of protecting animals just slightly larger than a common house cat. Most of these animals will languish in steel-jawed leghold traps before being bludgeoned to death.

Gov. Bruce Rauner needs to know that his constituents are opposed to this bill. Please call the governor at 312-814-2121, and ask him to veto H.B. 352.

Durocher showed what it meant to be a North Star

ST. CHARLES – Wanting to be successful and actually achieving success are two very different things in sports.

St. Charles North’s Hanna Durocher understood what it took to be successful each and every day of her four years as a member of the North Stars girls soccer program.

There was no question the senior forward was one of the better skilled soccer players in the area this season, but her knowledge and passion for the game were second to none. Durocher, a North Stars captain, was a primary reason why North finished the season 20-3-2 and made a trip to the sectional round of the Class 3A playoffs.

Durocher, the Kane County Chronicle Girls Soccer Player of the Year, scored 16 goals and added 18 assists, which may not immediately jump out as the most eye-popping numbers, but her presence on the field led to a majority of North’s scoring opportunities this season.

“Hanna just knew what it was going to take to be successful,” North coach Ruth Vostal said. “Throughout her four years here, she was one of the most dedicated and committed players I have ever coached. But beyond her four years, she got to see the program and understand what it meant to be part of the tradition of this program.”

Vostal, the program’s lone coach who now has retired after 15 seasons, said that Durocher’s abilities were one thing, but her instincts and execution were another. It helped her to be able to watch the program before playing for the North Stars.

Ruth Vostal North coach Hanna’s sister, Lauren, was a member of four North regional championship teams (2010-13), as was the case with Hanna. It helped that the program has won 13 straight regional titles.

Durocher believes that it benefited her tremendously to watch her sister play and understand the North tradition and legacy.

“Coming onto the team as

a freshman and having her and her teammates to look up to was really important for me,” Durocher said. “The fact that I had people who cared and knew me coming in really helped with the transition and made me care about this program and what it stood for.”

Many times you will hear the saying, “First one to practice and last one to leave.”

Add Hanna Durocher to that list, because it didn’t matter if there was a single person left on the soccer field, if she thought work needed to be put in, or she wasn’t satisfied with leaving the field that day, she would stay.

“A lot of times you get either a vocal leader or one that leads by example off the field,” Vostal said. “[Hanna] was both. She just came to work hard every single day.

There were no off days for a girl like her, but she could

also encourage and motivate, which is a rare combination in my opinion.”

It was symbolic that both Durocher and Vostal departed the program at the same time given what both meant to North soccer.

Vostal witnessed a passing of the guard this season to younger players, as it meant so much to Durocher to leave the program in good hands.

“She embodied North soccer,” Vostal said. “She has such a great character and passion for this game. She was not going to leave this program without knowing the younger players were ready to step into roles to be successful. They got to see the kind of effort and daily commitment it takes to reach the level we have been at.”

Although she initially was sad to see the season come to an end, Durocher has had time to look back on her four

years and everything that she and her North teams have accomplished.

“It really was a great ride,” Durocher said. “I have never dwelled on losses for too long, but I actually thought [the losses] made our teams closer, and that’s important to me. I have always had pride in everything I do, and that’s something I can definitely take away from my time here.”

One thing her senior season did for her was make her want to continue to play soccer. Before the season’s end, Durocher was not committed anywhere, but she has decided to pursue playing soccer at the next level. Although her soccer future remains up in the air, one thing is for certain: Durocher’s on-field presence may be gone, but her legacy will remain at North for years to come.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE GIRLS SOCCER COACH OF THE YEAR

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com Kaneland girls soccer coach Scott Parillo felt his teams have always had this burden on them after not getting past the regional round entering the 2015 season.

So he decided that a change in mentality needed to be made heading into his 11th

season with the Knights.

“They probably didn’t listen to me,” Parillo joked.

“No ... I think we came in with a different Scott Parillo approach this year. We didn’t talk about championships, but instead just said, ‘Let’s go

have fun and see what happens.’ There was always that ongoing pressure of making it to the regional and not winning one, so we knew we needed to do something new.”

Parillo and Kaneland finished the season 19-4 and won the school’s first regional and sectional titles in girls soccer, falling one win shy of reaching the Class 2A state tournament.

For his efforts and accomplishments this season, Parillo is the Kane County Chronicle Girls Soccer Coach of the Year.

“This kind of thing goes out to everyone involved with this program,” Parillo said.

“From, most importantly, the players to the other coaches and parents and everyone who supported us all season

long. These girls made my job so easy just doing what they were supposed to do.”

A trip to the supersectionals was something no Kaneland girls soccer player had ever experienced, but Parillo got to do it with a very young Knights group, as 15 players will return next season.

2015 KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE ALL-AREA GIRLS SOCCER TEAMS FIRST TEAM

Darcy Cunningham, St. Charles East, Sr. Although an ankle injury hampered the end of her season, Cunningham was still one of the best and most effective players in the area. She scored eight goals and added 16 assists for a Saints team that lost just two games. Cunningham, who will play soccer at NCAA Division III Washington University in St. Louis next year, also was selected as IHSSCA All-State.

Jordyn Sundberg, Aurora Central Catholic, Sr. Sundberg had an area-leading 24 goals along with 11 assists this season.

ACC made it to

Gia Wahlberg, St. Charles North, Fr. Wahlberg wasted no time bursting onto the scene at the varsity level. She led the North Stars with 18 goals and contributed 13 assists. The combination of her speed and ability to strike the ball from anywhere on the field made things difficult for any opposing defense.

MIDFIELDERS Lizzie Parrilli, St. Charles North, Sr. Parrilli was as tough as the come in the midfield position.

She was able to score goals and contribute offensively, but also could make a strong impact on the defensive side of the ball. A North captain, Parrilli scored 10 goals and added seven assists this season.

Karina Rosales, Batavia, Sr. Rosales was mostly an attacking midfielder for the Bulldogs all year.

She scored 12 goals and added

eight assists. She earned all-conference honors in the Upstate Eight this season and will play soccer at Wisconsin-Whitewater next year.

Kelli Santo Paulo, St. Charles East, Sr. Santo Paulo is as strong a midfielder as there was in the area this season.

She scored five goals and added two assists, but what often went unnoticed was her ability on the ball. The senior midfielder set up many of the Saints’ goals this year, although she wasn’t credited for as many assists.

DEFENDERS Sara Buetow, St. Charles East, Sr. Buetow’s knowledge and quick thinking on the ball made it tough for opposing teams to put pressure on the Saints’ back line.

Noted for its offense coming into the season, Buetow helped East become a feared defensive team, as well.

Sonia Ost, St. Charles East, Jr. Ost and teammate Sara Buetow were two of the most difficult defenders to get by all season. The Saints’ defense was led by Ost

in the middle, and it was very difficult for many teams to get a sustained attack against East.

The Saints allowed just 13 goals this season. Ost scored two goals and had one assist as well.

Gabby Cano, Kaneland, Jr. Cano was a big reason why the Knights made it to the supersectionals for the first time in school history.

Cano was the anchor of a back line that had 17 games where the opponent was shut out or scored just one goal this spring.

GOALKEEPER Alison Chesterfield, St. Charles East, Jr. There were several strong goalkeepers in the area this season, but Chesterfield allowed just 11 goals in 18 games played. “Gator,” as she was called by coaches and teammates, was helped by having an extremely strong defense in front of her, but take nothing away from her nine shutouts and a 0.61 goals-against average.

‘Change of scenery’ suits former Cougars South Bend Cubs seeing new sights in Eastern Division

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com The South Bend Cubs staged a “Back to the Future” Night promotion Tuesday, commemorating the film’s 30th anniversary with such glitz as a purportedly time-traveling DeLorean.

A handful of Cubs haven’t needed director Robert Zemeckis’ treatment to make like Marty McFly lately. The prop on the ballpark concourse only served as window dressing.

With the Midwest League’s first round of interdivision play concluding Monday, the Cubs prospects who played as Cougars in 2014 saw some of their former stomping grounds. The Cougars, a Western Division club, and Cubs, an Eastern Division team, swapped affiliates in the offseason, with Kane County aligning with the Arizona Diamondbacks after the Cubs left for South Bend.

“Obviously, your goal is to keep moving up, but I think a change, it at least gives you a little change of scenery,” said South Bend catcher Cael Brockmeyer, who helped the Cougars win the 2014 MWL

championship. “You get to see the other side and go around to all the other stadiums. It’s been kind of nice to see some of the other good ballparks.”

Brockmeyer, selected to start for the Eastern Division at next week’s MWL All-Star Game in Peoria, isn’t alone in that sentiment. Former Kane County teammates now sharing the South Bend clubhouse include infielder David Bote and outfielders Jeffrey Baez, Yasiel Balaguert and David Bote Kevin Encarnacion.

One constant amid the shuffling: fan support. Entering Tuesday, the Cougars and Cubs ranked third and fifth, respectively, in the 16-team MWL with average attendances of 4,691 and 4,515.

“I know the weekends, we get a pretty good crowd turning out,” Brockmeyer said.

“During the week, it’s not quite as busy or not quite as packed as Kane County was, but during the weekends, they get pretty good fans, and they all seem to get pretty worked up, so it’s been pretty cool.”

The Cubs promoted catcher Kyle Schwarber to the Class-A Cougars on June 17, 2014, 12 days after drafting him fourth overall in the Major League Baseball FirstYear Player Draft. Late Monday, less than a year removed from his Kane County debut, Schwarber earned a call to the major leagues from Double-A Tennessee.

Schwarber caught the top of the ninth inning during Tuesday’s home loss to Cleveland and struck out on three pitches in the bottom half.

Cubs president Theo Epstein told reporters Schwarber will serve as designated hitter during the club’s upcoming five-game road trip to American League parks.

Regardless of Schwarber’s performance, Epstein said he’ll be sent to Triple-A Iowa after Sunday’s game at Minnesota.

Schwarber is the first former Cougar from the team’s Cubs affiliation to make his big league debut and the 133rd overall.

Continued from page 19 The players felt a weight off their shoulders making it to that point, but players such as Gabby Cano and senior Madi Jurcenko say it had a lot to do with the team buying into that “having fun” mindset.

“As the games progressively got harder, [coach Parillo] would always just stress having fun,” Cano said. “Every time we won another game and got further, it was a bo-

nus for all of us, which really just kind of took the pressure off of everyone.”

“We put a lot of pressure on ourselves as it is,” Jurcenko said. “He knew that and I think it took a lot of weight off of us. Especially after we won the regional, which was our main goal, everything felt like a bonus, so we just went out and had fun together and it was a blast.”

The fun with this Kaneland group didn’t stop once it left the field.

Parillo recalled a theme day when the girls dressed

up as soccer moms with fanny packs and another day where the girls “dressed like their dads.” That particular day forced Parillo to bring a handful of Hawaiian shirts to school for the girls to wear, giving him quite the laugh out of the outfits.

He said this side of him would shock many of his own players, who had often asked if there was a defibrillator present in case he had a heart attack.

“This group just loved to have fun,” Parillo said. “They picked on me a lot, which was

easy, but we were a family and probably spent more time together than they actually did with their own families. They love this sport … I love this sport … and I have learned as I’ve gotten older to be much more mellow and let them just have fun.”

Parillo, 46, also coaches the boys soccer program at Kaneland and has done so for 14 years.

But this spring is one he will never forget, taking the Knights girls to uncovered ground.

Whether it was the 12

rounds of penalty kicks in the sectional championship against Freeport, or what turned out to be the season-ending loss to Peoria Notre Dame, the girls flat out had the time of their lives, knowing whatever they did, a proud coach would be waiting for them on the sidelines.

“I told them if you play our game ... our Kaneland-style soccer, you will always have a great chance to win,” Parillo said. “We had a game plan going into games and it just happened. But, holy cow, was this a fun season.”

He has remained in touch with Kerkman through the years.

“It’s an honor to be able to carry on the tradition that he has established,” Johnson said.

Johnson, who’ll be part of West Aurora’s physical education faculty and retain Kerkman’s assistants, also considered his family in the move.

Johnson and his wife, Katie, a West Aurora English teacher, have lived in the West Aurora school district for almost a decade. The couple has two young children, Will, 5, and Alexandra, 2.

Johnson interviewed for the position during the first week of June and was offered the job June 5, pending school board approval.

“We’re really excited,” Buckley said. “Brian’s going to bring a lot to the table with his energy and enthusiasm.

He’s going to be well-received by our players. He’s a welcome addition to our school and our athletic program and our basketball program.”

Brian Johnson called the West Aurora boys basketball coaching position a “destination job.”

That might explain his whereabouts Tuesday morning.

Hours after the West Aurora School Board approved his recommendation as legendary predecessor Gordie Kerkman’s replacement Monday night, Johnson met his new players at camp.

“He’s hitting the ground running,” West Aurora athletic director Jason Buckley said.

That doesn’t mean Johnson holds his former territory, Kaneland, in any less esteem.

Johnson was a West Aurora assistant under Kerkman in 2008-09. The next school year, he joined Kaneland as head coach, and went 99-68 in six seasons.

Citing former standouts such as Dave Dudzinski and Matt Limbrunner, Johnson fondly recalled his days on the Knights bench, which of-

ficially concluded after the June 8 opener of the Geneva Summer League. He informed players he was moving on the next day.

“I thought I was really lucky for being at a place that supported me right off the bat and allowed me to develop the things that I wanted to do to develop a program,” Brian Johnson said.

Johnson “The kids … they respected what we were trying to do, and they held themselves to the standard we wanted to hold them to. And I also had great coaches … whose first thing was to care for the players and the students.

“Kaneland will be a place that always has a place in my heart. It’s very special to me.”

Johnson, 35, considers Kerkman a mentor. In May, when Kerkman announced his retirement after 39 seasons and 805 wins, Johnson quickly applied for the opening, informing Kaneland athletic director Peter Goff and

Take driving precautions to deal with aging eyes Dear Doctor K: I am in my 60s.

Over the last few years, my night vision has gotten worse, and I’m finding it increasingly difficult to drive at night. What can I do to continue driving safely after dark?

Dear Reader: Night vision does start to decline as we get older, usually after age 50. Perhaps you’ve noticed more difficulty seeing in dim light, or maybe you’re more bothered by the glare from headlights.

Problems with night vision are the result of several changes to the eye that occur with aging.

The first change involves the iris and pupil. As we age, the iris muscle weakens and becomes less responsive. The iris muscle surrounds an empty, circular space: the pupil. The iris muscle can make the pupil wide or narrow.

As the muscle weakens, the pupil shrinks and doesn’t open as wide to let light in.

After light passes through the pupil, it passes through the lens and then falls on the back of your eye, the retina. As we age, the lens takes on a yellowish-brown tinge.

This change allows less light to pass through to the retina.

Finally the retina loses some rod cells. These are the structures

I spoke to my colleague, Dr. Eli Peli, a professor of ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. He suggested taking the following measures to keep night driving safe: • Make sure you can see well enough to drive. Get a comprehensive vision exam. It should include tests for cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. The first three become more common as a person ages.

• Check your mirrors. Switch your rearview mirror to the “night” setting. This dims the reflection of headlights in the mirror.

• Clean your glass. Scrub your front and rear windshields inside and outside to remove any streaks that may intensify glare. Make sure your mirrors and headlights are grime-free as well. Clean

your eyeglasses, too. You can get sealed wipes to keep in the glove compartment or side pocket of the car, to make cleaning the inside of the windshield easy.

• Keep your eyes moving. Don’t lock your gaze on the center of the road. Constantly scan the horizon for flashes that can signal oncoming traffic.

• Stay off the road at sunrise and sunset. Glare is usually the biggest issue for older drivers. But glare from the sun is worse than headlight glare. It can be blinding.

After you reach the age of 50, an annual eye checkup is important. That’s true even if you’re not bothered by nighttime glare. My patients sometimes think that a checkup will just discover changes in the eye that nothing can be done about -- so why bother?

In fact, some common problems that develop with age – such as glaucoma or cataracts – can be fixed completely. That makes everything that requires vision – not just night driving – better.

Find friends who are non-smokers Dr. Wallace: I’m 15, and I smoke, but only a couple of cigarettes a day. My three best friends all smoke, and I kind of feel like I have to smoke, too. I only smoke when I’m around them, but I really don’t like to smoke. When I do smoke, I just suck the smoke into my mouth and immediately blow it out. I figure that if I don’t inhale I won’t get addicted to cigarettes. Now I’m wondering if I really could become addicted or if you think I may already be addicted to cigarettes? – Carla, New Orleans, Louisiana Carla: If you don’t inhale when you smoke, you are not addicted to tobacco. However, if you continue to hang around with people who smoke, you are breathing their secondhand smoke and your health is at risk.

And if you continue to hang around with smokers and “pretend” you’re smoking, it won’t be long until you really are smoking.

You should seriously consider finding some different friends who are nonsmokers. That way you won’t feel pressured to continue what could become a nasty, unhealthy, highly addictive, very expensive, and – ultimately – a lethal habit. Please read the following letter from Maria. She offers great advice!

Dr. Wallace: A while ago, a young girl wrote to you and wanted advice about smoking because some of her friends were pressuring her to start smoking and “be cool.” You gave her many reasons not to start smoking, and I wish I had read them before I started smoking.

I started smoking fourteen years ago when I was only 14 because my friends were

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace smoking and thought it was “cool.” Well, it is definitely not cool. I was hooked 14 years ago, and I’m still smoking, even though I’ve tried several times to quit.

It’s a powerful habit and very expensive, and the cost of cigarettes keeps going up!

My apartment and my car both smell like ashtrays, and even my clothes smell. I think that’s one reason when I meet new guys and they seem nice, they never call me because I smell like an ashtray, too! I have to get my teeth cleaned every six months because of nicotine stains and my dentist has even tried to get me to stop smoking. It’s ugly, smelly and unattractive – not to mention bad for your health.

I want teens to know that if any of your friends tell you that you’re not cool because you don’t smoke, you should tell them they’re stupid because they do!

Being smart is much better than being cool!

In bridge we have suit holdings that sometimes leave players feeling lonely. In today’s deal, South is in three no-trump. How should he walk the walk after West leads the heart nine?

Note that a nine lead is always top of nothing, unless you use coded leads, when a 10 or a nine shows zero or two higher cards and would be either top of nothing or from a suit headed by Q-10-9, K-10-9 or A-10-9.

South’s sequence indicates a balanced hand with a good 22 to 24 points. North raises to three no-trump, expecting his partner to waltz home. However, it is preferable to have 15 points opposite 14, instead of 23 opposite 6. With the points more evenly divided, moving between the two hands is much easier.

South starts with seven top tricks: two spades, two hearts, one diamond and two clubs. From where will two more winners come? It will have to be diamonds .

If declarer leads low to his jack, he wins when East holds the king and queen. But if South plays low to his nine, then low to his jack, he succeeds when East has the king-10 or queen-10, two holdings instead of one. That is clearly the right approach. Also, because declarer must lead diamonds twice from the dummy, he has to win the first trick with the heart queen.

Then, after his diamond nine loses to West’s queen, South takes the next heart with dummy’s ace, plays a diamond to East’s 10 and his own jack, and claims.
