“Come on,” said Vest, a 21-year-old Elburn resident, but Kate had had enough. She was done with all the exercises of the facility’s 28th annual Marklund Summer Games, held Saturday on its campus in the Mill Creek subdivision near Geneva.

Marklund provides housing and services for developmentally disabled infants, children and adults. Its Geneva campus is for adults.

Marklund does not provide last names for its clients.

Vest, a special-education student and her brother, J.R. Vest, 18, were among 300 volunteers who helped out in the Marklund version of the Special Olympics.

Spokeswoman Dawn Lassiter-Brueske said 100 clients, including 96 residents and four day clients, participated in the various adaptive games, all with the help of family, staff and volunteers.

“Our clients have such profound developmental disabilities, that they cannot participate in Special Olympics, they have to be assisted – so we basically created our own,” Lassiter-Brueske said.

“We had a baseball game, games and activities on every one of our patios of the residential homes as well as indoors,” Lassiter-Brueske said.

“We had some walking races and wheelchair races. Everything is assisted with the help of volunteers.”

Other than staff, most volunteers who participated were from Christ Community Church in St. Charles, Lassiter Brueske said.

Geneva History Museum plans Swedish Days events

Aldermen OK funds to repair electric lines

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Aldermen approved an emergency expenditure Monday of $23,154 to rebuild an electric line over the Fox River at Ford Street.

The labor contract was awarded to InTren of Union.

“We’ll start it as soon as

they can get crews down here,” Manager of Electric Operations Hal Wright said.

Wright said the rebuilding project was prompted by high winds occurring March 31, which caused power to blink on and off.

“We had a windstorm that caused some of the lines to blow together and damaged a

couple of those wires that are across the river,” Wright said.

“The lines have been there for a very long time. We’ve rebuilt some of the lines in the crossing in the last year, but not all of them. So at his point, we’re going to do them all.”

Instead of an outage, Wright said, customers experienced a series of blinks in

their electric service.

“The power would come back on and stay on until the wind would blow again and the circuits would time out,” Wright said. “If there are enough blinks in a short enough period of time, the circuit will open and stay open – but that never happened.”

Chuck Brown said the council held a special Committee of the Whole to approve the request right before the regular city council, where final action was taken.

“I understand it’s an emergency,” Brown said. “We’re pushing it through in a single night, which we don’t like to do.”

North Aurora, hotel ST. CHARLES Rowing group addresses council developer at odds over impact fees

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Village trustees Monday voiced their opposition to reducing traffic impact fees for the developer of a proposed hotel any more than village staff already has proposed.

The property owner, MHG Hotels LLC, is seeking to file an amendment to the Orchard Gateway Development annexation agreement to provide a reduction in impact fees to assist with the development of a four-story, 92-room Fairfield Marriott Inn and Suites hotel on Orchard Road in North Aurora, across the street from the North Aurora Auto Mall.

The developer also owns Holiday Inn off of Orchard Road in Aurora.

MHG Hotels is requesting a total fee reduction of about $100,000.

Staff has proposed a fee reduction of $78,555, based on traffic impact analysis and sewer usage fees, North Aurora Economic and Community Development Director Mike Toth told village trustees.

Toth told trustees the

original calculation for the traffic impact fee was based on a retail business and a hotel would generate less traffic than a retail business.

Village Trustee Mark Guethle said he agreed with staff’s offer to the developer.

“There has to be some sort of recapture,” Guethle said during Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

Other trustees also weighed in.

“Let’s do a cost-benefit analysis,” Village Trustee Laura Curtis said. “In a way, I don’t want to give away the farm, but I don’t want to stop the process.”

Attorney John Philipchuck, who is representing MHG Hotels LLC, said the hotel would bring additional revenues to the village and spawn new businesses.

“We think it is a statement for the area and a catalyst to improve that area,” Philipchuck said.

The North Aurora Plan Commission on July 1 will hold a public hearing on a height variance that would allow for the hotel to be built.

ST. CHARLES – The leader of a national rowing company’s St. Charles club Monday spoke to the St. Charles City Council about its plans to build a boathouse.

David Miller, director of RowAmerica St. Charles, gave an overview of the boathouse plans and of RowAmerica overall.

The company was founded by Howard Winklevoss, father of twins Cameron and Tyler, who rowed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The competitive rowing group wants to build a boathouse in Ferson Creek Park, which is bordered by Route 31 and the Fox River in the northern part of the city.

The company plans to invest about $2 million into the St. Charles project according to Dave Dickison, president of RowAmerica Boat Club, a division of RowAmerica, in May. Miller said the RowAmerica is in ongoing talks with the St. Charles Park District. The two parties are at the beginning stages of lease agreement conversations and the permitting process.

Most alderman gave favorable comments about the club, including Fourth Ward Alderman Jo Krieger.

“I think it’s a very interesting concept … I wish you luck,” Krieger said.

After First Ward Alderman Dan Stellato asked about the Winklevoss name and the 2010 film “The Social Network,”

Miller confirmed that the Winklevoss twins were subjects in the film played by actors. The twins sued Facebook founder Mark Zuckerburg, claiming he stole their idea for the website.

SETTING GROUND RULES Cities establishing plans for zoning, ordinances for medical cannabis

ane County and a few municipalities within it this year already are setting their rules and regulations for medical cannabis.

The state Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act became law Jan. 1. With the four-year program now on the books, towns are preparing to have dispensaries where medical patients can receive or purchase cannabis and cultivation centers where the cannabis can grow.

The current proposed rules would allow up to two dispensing centers in Kane County and one cultivation center in each state police district, said Mark VanKerkhoff, the county’s development and community services director, in May. Kane County is in a police district with DuPage, DeKalb, McHenry and Lake counties.

Since no one is sure where the dispensaries might go, local governments are making plans for zoning restrictions and adopting ordinances now so that laws will be in place if and when medical cannabis eventually becomes available in the state.

Local municipalities want to be ready in case a proposal is brought forward.

A Kane County government staff proposal defines dispensaries and cultivation centers each as an “interim special use” that would be subject to a public hearing and require County Board approval.

The special uses could be limited to five years and could be specified to terminate automatically when the state law expires Dec. 31, 2018.

Since state law prohibits placing cultivation centers within 2,500 feet of a residential area, one of the only possible spots in St. Charles

that one could be located is a mostly retail and industrial corridor on the city’s east side.

St. Charles city staff’s proposal limits the use of the center and dispensaries to that zoning district.

Staff decided it would be easier if all of these permitted uses were in this one zoning district should any issues arise, said Matt O’Rourke, the city’s economic development division manager, in April. City staff said it would be easier to track any cultivation center or dispensaries in one area of the city while the program is still in its pilot phase.

The St. Charles City Council on May 5 approved the zoning code amendment that includes the restrictions.

Further south in the county, the North Aurora Village Board is considering allowing medical marijuana dispensaries as permitted uses in areas zoned for commercial, industrial or office use.

The village’s Plan Commission will hold a public hearing about changing the zoning code and likely discuss the proposal in July.

Kane County officials and residents like Patty Schuler are among those keeping up to date on cannabis-related legislation across Illinois. Schuler hopes that patients who are sick will be able to have reasonable access to medical cannabis if it would benefit their conditions.

“Patients probably won’t have access until this time next year,” said Schuler, a Batavia-based cannabis consultant.

Schuler in late May held an informational session on medical cannabis at the Batavia Public Library.

“I hope Illinois gets on board sooner rather than later,” Schuler said. “It’s going to be good for the state.”

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A 4-yearold boy who drowned at a country club pool Saturday was identified as Paulino F. Delle Grazie of St. Charles, Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said in a statement.

Paulino was found unresponsive in a swimming pool at the Royal Fox Country Club in St. Charles, officials

said. A preliminary autopsy Monday showed the boy died from drowning, Russell said.

Toxicology has been sent to a forensic lab.

St. Charles police and paramedics were called to Royal Fox, 4405 Royal and Ancient Drive, shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday, where they took the boy to Delnor.

Police, the coroner’s office and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services

are investigating.

St. Charles Police spokeswoman Lisa Blackwell said they had no other information to release.

“We are looking at the incident, and we contacted DCFS,” Blackwell said. “It is under investigation, and we can’t answer any questions at this time.”

Paulino was pronounced dead at 4:11 p.m. Saturday at Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

The issue recently was discussed at a Joint Committee of the Whole meeting. Batavia Fire Chief Randy Deicke had recommended the city not charge for lift assists.

“I, personally, do not believe it is appropriate to charge for the first one or two lift

assists, as the department is there to help,” Deicke said in a memo to aldermen. “I also believe it would be hard to justify charging an independent living facility for assisting one of its residents, when the facility does not have the 24-hour staff to assist or determine an injury, and they tell the residents that when they move in.”

He noted that most fire departments in the area do not charge for lift assists, while some start charging after a certain number of calls to the same person.

Last year, the Batavia Fire

Department responded to about 153 calls to assist people who needed help getting up, Deicke said. Of that amount, the majority of the calls – 66 – were to help people at The Holmstad retirement community in Batavia. The next largest number of calls – 33 – were to private residences for one call for assistance.

Deicke said the majority of the call volume for lift assists is predominately from senior or handicapped citizens who are living in independent living facilities, or private residents.

Geneva electric superintendent’s memorial service set for Saturday

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Preliminary autopsy results for Geneva Electric Superintendent Michael Buffington, who died in a car crash late Thursday in Sugar Grove, show the accident caused his death, Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said.

“He did not have a heart attack or a stroke,” Russell said, referring to a medical condition that could have precipitated the crash.

Russell said the coroner’s office would wait for toxicology results to see whether other factors led to the crash.

Buffington, 64, of Geneva, was driving a city-owned Ford Taurus and apparently rolled through a stop sign at the top of the Route 47 exit ramp from Interstate 88, turning left to head north, Sugar Grove Police Chief

Patrick Rollins said.

Buffington’s car was struck on the driver’s side by an oncoming Chevrolet Trailblazer, which did not have to stop.

The intersection is not a four-way stop, Rollins said, but all vehicles at the top of the ramp – leaving I-88 – must stop before exiting to enter Route 47.

A memorial service for Buffington is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at O-AceIs, 6639 South Route U.S. 31, Bunker Hill, Indiana.

Geneva’s city flag has been lowered to half-staff at all facilities in honor of Buffington, officials said.

“With the sudden and unexpected loss of our co-worker and friend Mike Buffington, our hearts are heavy, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family,” City Administrator Mary McKittrick said in a statement.

Judge rules woman charged with murder fit to stand trial

Latoya Baines, 27, who lived at the Batavia Apartments complex at the time of the stabbing, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the April 30, 2012, stabbing death of Chicago resident Gerald J. Jackson, 25.

Police said the stabbing was the result of a domestic dispute.

Citing the results of a psychological evaluation of Baines, Kane County Judge Susan Clancy Boles recently ruled that Baines is fit to stand trial. Baines’ defense attorney, Sandra Byrd, had raised concerns about whether Baines was fit to stand trial.

Baines remains in the Kane County Jail on a $750,000 bond. She has been in custody for 777 days.

A court hearing will be on July 31 on Byrd’s motion to suppress statements Baines made to Batavia police as she was being arrested. “ W h i l e handcuffed in the back of the police car, [Baines] allegedly made statements to the police in reLatoya sponse to quesBaines tions asked of her by the police,” Byrd said in her motion.

At the time she made the alleged statements, Baines had not been advised of her Miranda rights, Byrd contended. Baines was intoxicated at the time she was transported to the Batavia Police

Department, Byrd said.

In addition, Byrd said that throughout the day on April 30, 2012, [Baines] was questioned in repeated lengthy sessions by detectives from the Batavia Police Department.

“She was not read her Miranda rights each time the questioning started anew, and the questioning continued over several hours,” Byrd said. “Based on her mental capacity and/or physical condition at the time of questioning, [Baines] did not fully understand her Miranda rights and was incapable of voluntarily waiving them.”

Batavia Police Detective Kevin Bretz said he had not seen a copy of the motion to suppress statements, but he wasn’t surprised.

“It’s kind of the norm in court,” he said. “That’s part of the whole process.”

Teen receives additional charges

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A 17-yearold St. Charles boy, already charged with robbery and armed robbery in an incident that took place June 11 in Batavia, will face additional charges in store-related incidents that took place the same day in St. Charles.

The St. Charles Police Department on Monday announced the charges in incidents that involve the St. Charles locations of Meijer, 855 S. Randall Road, and WalMart, 150 Smith Road.

The St. Charles teen was charged with two counts of burglary, one count of felony retail theft, one count of misdemeanor retail theft and one count of unlawful use of a weapon, according to a news release.

In the release, police noted

they were awaiting additional charges in DuPage County against a Geneva woman, Kayla N. Magnuson, 22, in an incident that took place at the St. Charles Wal-Mart on the city’s far east side in DuPage County. Charges were denied for Magnuson in the Meijer incident, police said.

Previously, Magnuson and the 17-year-old boy had been charged with Kayla N. felony counts of robbery and Magnuson armed robbery, along with retail theft, a misdemeanor, in connection with an armed robbery that took place on June 11 at the Batavia Wal-Mart, located at 801 N. Randall Road, according to court documents.

the Batavia store for a theft in progress. According to a Batavia police report, both Magnuson and the St. Charles boy entered Wal-Mart with the intent to steal a flat screen TV set.

As they attempted to take a 32-inch TV past the last point of purchase, one of the WalMart employees asked them if they had paid for the set.

The 17-year-old displayed a long machete and told the employee “do you really want me to go back to the register” and the two continued toward their car, according to the report.

After a second Wal-Mart employee confronted them, the 17-year-old told the victim he would stab her in the face, the report stated. Police on June 11 later found the suspect vehicle in Geneva and took Magnuson and the teen into custody.

Similar class action lawsuits were filed in Cook, Will, DuPage, Lake and McHenry counties and all – or nearly all – of their municipalities, and all of those also were dropped, records show.

In Kane County, court records show the claim was dropped June 5, a month before the first court date was

scheduled.

Ward’s use of the county email was referred to the county ethics advisor, who then referred it to the Kane County State’s Attorney. The state’s attorney’s office said it does not comment on possible or pending investigations.

GENEVA – A former deputy clerk at the Kane County Clerk’s Office recently cashed a severance check for $7,076.34, county payroll records show.

The severance agreement between Jeff Ward of Geneva and Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham was for $11,298.42. The lesser amount represents $4,222.08 in deductions, Kane County Treasurer David Rickert said.

Ward worked for 17 months as a systems analyst at the clerk’s office. He started part time Dec. 7, 2012, then went

full time starting June 9, 2013, according to payroll records obtained by the Kane County Chronicle through the Freedom of Information Act. Ward was earning $47,990.90 a year, according to county records.

Ward was suspended without pay for five days in March for doing campaign work on Cunningham’s primary election. Ward sent an email on behalf of Cunningham’s campaign to the Illinois State Board of Elections on the county’s server, using his county email account and during the normal work day, records show.

Born: Jan. 7, 1950 Died: June 12, 2014 GENEVA – Former Peru, Indiana, resident Michael James Buffington, 64, of Geneva, passed away Thursday, June 12, 2014, as a result of injuries sustained in a traffic accident that happened near Sugar Grove.

Born Jan. 7, 1950, in Peru, Indiana, Michael was the fourth of 14 children born to William and Kate Buffington, a family that totals 13 brothers and sisters.

Michael graduated from Peru High School and went on to earn bachelor’s degrees in business finance and accounting from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana.

He also received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from IU’s arch rival, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, which clearly was his favorite college as his choice of decor in his home reflected.

He was married to Jacqueline “Jaci” Sue Clark on Jan. 3, 1970, and they had been inseparable for more than four decades.

Their marriage was blessed with three children, nine grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren.

Michael held the position of superintendent of electrical services for Geneva at the time of his passing. He held that position since 2004. Geneva City Administrator Mary McKittrick said, “We are fortunate to have known and worked with him, and Geneva is a better place because of him. Mike was a gentle leader and one of the smartest people I’ve ever known. His loss will certainly be felt by our entire organization for a long time.”

The city of Geneva has honored Michael by lowering all municipal flags to half-staff.

Michael previously was the superintendent of electric services for Geneseo, Illinois, director of Lawrenceburg, Indiana, Municipal Utilities and general manager for Peru, Indiana, Utilities.

Michael was passionate about the energy industry and would talk at length about the scope and impact that his position

would play in the daily lives of his customers.

He served as president of the Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency, was a member of the board of directors for the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency and a member of the management committee for the board of directors of Prairie State Generating Company.

Michael was involved with Kiwanis International, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and once held the position of president of the board of directors for the Miami County, Indiana, YMCA. A golfer, Michael also was an avid walker and an advocate for his personal weight-loss program.

He was an enthusiastic fan of all Purdue sports and a recent convert to fly fishing.

On a recent trip to Missouri, he landed a number of trout that he was more than excited about catching and displaying pictures of on social media.

His biggest passion was his family, and Michael was always quick with a smile for his grandkids, was known for having long phone conversations with his kids and observed administering a daily quota of at least 12 hugs, for his wife, Jaci.

Before his retirement, he was employed by Fermilab in Batavia as a computer technician for more than 22 years.

Frank served during World War II in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion Post 352 St. Charles.

He is survived by his two sons, Mark (Donna) of St. Charles, and Alan (Tammy) of Chicago Ridge; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joanne; and his parents, Frank and Olga Mehring.

The visitation will be at 4 p.m.

CHARMAINE P. MYERS Born: May 11, 1931 Died: June 12, 2014 AURORA – Charmaine P. Myers, 83, of Aurora, passed away Thursday, June 12, 2014 at Fair Oaks Health Care Center in Crystal Lake.

She was born in Geneva on May 11, 1931, the daughter of Elmer and Pearl (nee Heidenriech) Jahreiss.

Charmaine and her family were dedicated members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Batavia.

She is survived by her two children, Cynthia Griffiths of Lake In The Hills and Richard Thiele of Ivoryton, Connecticut; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Joyce David; a son, Michael Scott Thiele, who died at infancy; and her husband, Stanley Myers.

After retiring from the ministry, Roy and Barbara moved to California where he started his own business which he operated until 2008. In July of that year, he and Barbara returned to the Chicago area to be close to their children and grandchildren.

Roy took great pride in having written and published several books, including his memoirs and two books of poetry. Roy’s passion for all forms of literature was legendary amongst his family.

Roy was an incredible caring man who spent much of his life looking after the needs of others. He was a loving husband and father who was always very proud of the achievements of both his family and friends. He will be missed by all who knew him more than words can every properly describe.

The visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. July 19 at Fox Valley Presbyterian Church, 227 East Side Drive, Geneva. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m.

LEONA CLAIRE IRMA NETTLAND OLSON Born: July 12, 1928 Died: June 12, 2014 ST. CHARLES – Leona Claire Irma Nettland Olson, 85, formerly of St. Charles, died Saturday, June 12, 2014.

Lee was born July 12, 1928, in Chicago, to Irma and Lionel Nettland.

Lee graduated from Taft High School and North Park College.

On May 3, 1952, she married Ray Olson and both of them were original signers incorporating the Village of Oak Brook in 1958. Lee owned her own tax and accounting business in St. Charles for more than 30 years. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Charles, where she served on numerous committees.

Lee will be remembered for her love of knitting, playing bridge and her involvement in the Sons of Norway. One of Lee’s greatest joys was the musical talents of her daughters.

Lee is survived by her three daughters, Lesley Olson (Ekki Schroer), Martha Sobie (Bob) and Vivian Kage (John); five grandchildren, Carl Sobie (Kayla), Roger Sobie (Jessica), Mitch Kage, Brent Kage and Finn Olson; as well as many relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Olson; and her sister, Arlene Nettland.

Lee’s memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 8 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1145 N. 5th Ave, St. Charles. Burial will be private.

THE REV. ROY L.F. SCHNEIDER Born: July 6, 1920 Died: June 12, 2014 ELGIN – The Rev. Roy L.F. Schneider, of Elgin, surrounded by loved ones, entered the life triumphant peacefully at home Thursday, June 12, 2014.

He was the beloved husband of Barbara, his wife of 39 years; cherished father of five – two sons, Dean (Kathryn) and Glenn (Nancy); three daughters, Kim (Kevin), Linda (Ignacio) and Kris (Rich); 14 grandchildren; and a brother, Walter (Margaret).

Sadly, he was preceded in death by two of his sons, Paul and Wayne.

Born July 6, 1920, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Roy served in the Canadian Navy for five years during World War II. After his discharge, he attended United College in Winnipeg, where he earned B.A. and B.D. degrees. He was ordained as a minister of the United Church of Canada in 1952. In his first position with the church, Roy served as a missionary for two years in Toyko, an experience he always treasured. Upon his return to Canada, Roy served in several Manitoba communities for 11 years before moving to the United States to serve as a pastor in churches in

GENEVA – The weeklong 65th annual Swedish Days festival opens at 10 a.m. today, with events, food, music and children’s activities until 11 p.m.

But Geneva Chamber of Commerce spokeswoman Laura Rush will be the earliest early bird, doing interviews live from 5 to 7 a.m. on Third Street with ABC-Channel 7 anchors right from the heart of the festival – on Third Street between James and Campbell streets.

“We’d like to get hundreds of people to come on down,” Rush said. “They will be on Third Street and the camera will be on me, and I will be talking to the anchors. It will be a nice way to kick off our 65th year.”

The festival, which winds up with a parade Sunday, usually draws more than 200,000 people over the six days that it takes place.

The chamber sponsors the event in cooperation with the city of Geneva and sponsors.

“We have something new this year, Fair On The Square, from 4 to 6 p.m., two hours of entertainment for the kids,” Rush said.

“There will be a couple of performers onstage, a face-painter, balloon-making and a stilt-walker. We’ll still have Kids’ Day, but we wanted the kids to kick off the 65th Swedish Days.”

Events begin at 10 a.m. today, with the Creation Station at James and Third streets for children; exhibits at the Geneva History Museum, 113. S. Third St.;

free concerts on the lawn from 1 to 3 p.m.; and the carnival and quad power jump starting at 2 p.m.

Colonial Café and Ice Cream is sponsoring an ice cream-eating contest from 6 to 7 p.m. on the main stage before the evening’s musical entertainment begins at 7:30 p.m., featuring The Crown Vics with 1950s music, Rush said.

Also new this year, Rush said the chamber will sponsor a craft beer event from noon to 10 p.m. Thursday – called Craft Brew@402 – at South Fourth Street and James.

Rush said featured craft brewers will be Penrose from Geneva, Two Brothers from Warrenville and Solemn Oath Brewery from Naperville.

A new food booth was added this year, she said, in addition to the traditional fare offered by local nonprofits.

Faith Christian Academy will be at 220 S. Third St., offering turkey and gouda with mango chutney on a pretzel roll, among other items, according to the food vendors’ menus and schedule of events online at www.genevachamber. com.

Though warm temperatures and scattered showers are predicted during the week, Rush said those who come to the festival know what to expect.

“Heat’s OK,” Rush said.

“People will come in the heat. It’s in June; people expect the heat. June be warm. By the time the sun goes down, it’s pleasant out – it’s nice for entertainment in the evening. We hope people come early and stay late.”

BATAVIA – Open Yoga Fun and Games will be from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. every weekday at Shine Yoga Studio, 5 N.

Swedish traditions on display at festival

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Proudly dressed in blue and gold – the colors of the Swedish flag – Richard Harris of Naperville was among those participating in traditional Maypole dancing at Sunday’s 104th annual Swedish Day festival at Good Templar Park in Geneva.

“We thought it would be a fun thing to do,” said Harris, who came to the United States from Great Britain in 1997 but grew up in Denmark and is familiar with many Swedish traditions.

Sponsored by the local chapter of the International Organization of Good Templars, Swedish Day is an alcohol-free celebration of the Scandinavian tradition of Midsommar, the longest day of the year in Sweden.

Swedish Day has been held since 1925 in Good Templar Park. Dancing with Harris were his three children.

“It was good exercise, but I think it was more tiring for them than they thought it would be,” he said.

Robert Holmberg, 41, of Chicago, has been attending Swedish Day festivities at Good Templar Park since he was a child. His mother, Eleonor Holmberg, was born in Sweden and is a member of the International Organiza-

tion of Good Templars.

“I like seeing all of the old faces and all the old friends,” he said.

Robert Holberg grew up singing many of the traditional Swedish folk songs that were sung on Sunday.

“We used to sing all those old songs,” he said.

Dala horse carver Ted Bowman, of Elgin, also was on

hand at Swedish Day, demonstrating his craft. The Dala house is a traditional carved, painted wooden horse statuette that has its origins in the Swedish province Dalarna.

Bowman, 83, has been carving the horses for about 40 years.

“One was given to me, and I couldn’t resist trying to make one of my own,” he said.

Sandy Braun, of Medinah, also was demonstrating the Swedish folk art form called dalamalning. She explained that dalamalning “has a biblical background. It tells a story.”

And learning how to paint in that style is not difficult, Braun said. ‘”It’s not that extremely complicated to learn,” she said. “Each artist lends their own personality to it.”

Geneva will celebrate its Swedish roots during Swedish Days, which starts today.

People can start the walk at any time between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The starting point for the walk is 47 Aintree Road, St. Charles. Participants can stroll through six gardens, varying from a quaint cottage garden to an estate garden nestled in the woods.

Proceeds will support the club’s scholarship fund, as well as other civic activities, including planting flower boxes over the bridges in town.

LOCAL BRIEFS HorsePower seeking volunteers for program MAPLE PARK – HorsePower Therapeutic Riding is seeking volunteers ages 14 and older for its growing program, which teaches horseback riding lessons to children and adults with physical, cognitive and emotional disabilities.

Approximately one-third of the riders receive scholarship support, so volunteers are needed to keep costs down.

Assignments include grooming, tacking, training, leading and side-walking.

Applicants must have at least two years of experience with horses and must pass a horse-handling skills assessment.

Shifts are available Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Daytime hours are especially needed.

Support volunteers also are needed for marketing, cleaning, fundraising, childcare and office tasks; no horse experience is necessary.

All volunteers must have their own health insurance and consent to a background check.

A mandatory orientation will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. today at Fox Chase Farm, 46W276 Route 38, Maple Park.

The majority whip position will probably become open Thursday, when House Republicans decide on replacing Cantor as majority leader.

The leading candidate is current whip Kevin McCarthy of California.

The third-ranking position requires “whipping” up support for the agenda set by Boehner.

“It’s always a tap dance to be in leadership,” said former Representative Tom

Davis, a Virgina Republican.

“All of these leaders have to finesse it. And it turns out Cantor didn’t.”

A third candidate for the whip job, Illinois’s Peter Roskam, of Wheaton, supported the spending agreement that ended the shutdown.

He now is chief deputy whip, a position that he suggested gives him an edge over the political conflict that would face Scalise and Stutzman.

“The whip job is collaborative, and has to draw on relationships that transcend boundaries and groups,” Roskam wrote last week in a letter to his colleagues. “At this tumultuous time for our

conference, I think it is more important to have the skills necessary to line up votes than to check a geographical box.”

Roskam represents parts of St. Charles in the Sixth District.

The tea party, the small-government political movement advocating a reduction in the U.S. national debt, was responsible for Cantor’s loss to economics professor David Brat.

Now, the movement’s supporters want one of their own in the leadership job Cantor will give up July 31 as he serves out the remainder of his seventh House term.

Stutzman, 37, was elected

in the 2010 when the tea party helped Republicans oust Democrats as the House majority.

He made his pitch for whip by positioning himself as his class’s liaison to leadership.

“In politics, we all know and recognize when the status quo has changed,” Stutzman wrote today in a letter to fellow House Republicans.

“When it does, we have to re-examine our course while remembering our core principles.”

Scalise, 48, is chairman of the Republican Study Committee, a group of lawmakers supporting a small-government agenda.

Roskam, 52, has a voting record more in line with McCarthy.

He was the only one of the three to support suspending the debt limit for a year in February, as well as the only one to back a compromise House-Senate farm bill and reauthorize the Overseas Private Investment Corp.

Supreme Court to consider online threats case

By ROBERT BARNES The Washington Post WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court agreed Monday to consider whether people who post violent or threatening language on Facebook and other Internet forums must show intent to follow through on their threats in order to be prosecuted.

Anthony D. Elonis, of Pennsylvania, was sentenced to nearly four years in prison for the ominous photos and violent rants he made against former co-workers, law enforcement officials and his estranged wife.

Elonis said his postings, which included the lyrics of songs by the rapper Eminem, were free speech and not specific threats to harm anyone.

The justices will consider the case next fall.

The announcement came on a busy day at the court, with justices scheduled to

complete their term in two weeks. They also: • Ruled 5 to 4 that a man who purchased a gun for his uncle because he thought he could get a discount violated a federal law against straw purchases of weapons. Justice Elena Kagan said ruling for Bruce Abramski, of Virginia, a former police officer, would virtually repeal the federal law outlawing straw purchases.

• Dealt a double blow to the government of Argentina. The justices turned down Argentina’s appeal of a lower court ruling that ordered it to pay $1.3 billion to hedge funds that hold some of its bonds. The court then ruled 7-to-1 in a separate case that U.S. courts can force banks to reveal where the country’s assets are held around the world.

• Said that a group may challenge a state’s law against making “false statements”

during a political campaign.

Lower courts had said the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List did not have standing to challenge the Ohio law because it has not been prosecuted.

But the court held unanimously that just the threat of being prosecuted over disputed speech was enough to allow the group to challenge the constitutionality of the statute.

• Declined to review an appeals court’s decision that a suburban Milwaukee school district had erred by holding high school graduation ceremonies in a local church, where students and their families were surrounded by religious artifacts and messages.

The court gave no reason for not accepting the case, and Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas said the court should have heard the dispute. They said the lower

court’s decision was at odds with some of the reasoning in the court’s recent decision allowing sectarian prayers at legislative meetings.

The Facebook case calls on the court to deal with a new frontier in how to deal with threats posted on social media sites.

Lower courts are divided over what must be shown to charge those such as Elonis, and whether there must be evidence that he planned to act on his threats before prosecution.

Elonis was 27, estranged from his wife and just fired from his job at an amusement park when he posted violent images and threatening language on his Facebook page.

One was a photo of him at the park in a Halloween costume and holding a toy knife to a co-worker’s throat. “I wish,” he wrote.

He also mimicked a comedy troupe’s routine about

what constituted a threat.

“Did you know that it’s illegal for me to say I want to kill my wife?” Elonis wrote. “Now it was OK for me to say it right then because I was just telling you that it’s illegal for me to say I want to kill my wife.”

Elonis’ petition to the court said: “Although the language was – as with popular rap songs addressing the same themes – sometimes violent, petitioner posted explicit disclaimers in his profile explaining that his posts were ‘fictitious lyrics,’ and he was ‘only exercising [his] constitutional right to freedom of speech.’ ” Solicitor General Donald Verrilli told the court there was no reason to accept the case.

He said lower courts had correctly decided that a reasonable person would have found the rants – some of them about his wife even more explicit – real threats.

Carbon tax can appeal to liberals, conservatives BLOOMBERG NEWS The best way to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases is to put a tax on carbon. Almost all economists would agree. Yet there’s even wider agreement, and not just among economists, that a carbon tax can’t happen. In the United States, it’s assumed, the idea will always be unpopular.

Why would a carbon tax be so much better than quantitative emissions controls like the ones just proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency? Because it allows the greatest possible flexibility in meeting any given target for lower emissions. Unlike caps on emissions from cars or power plants, say, or subsidies for this or that form of clean energy, a tax lets market forces organize the economy’s response. This ensures that emissions are cut where it’s easiest and cheapest to cut them.

To be fair, the EPA’s recent proposals follow this thinking as far as possible. The target of cutting power-plant emissions of carbon dioxide by 20 percent between 2005 and 2020, and 30 percent between 2005 and 2030, allows for a variety of approaches. Within a single sector of the economy – electric power – the aim is to mimic the advantages of a carbon tax. State and regional cap-and-trade systems, operating across the economy as a whole, move closer still to the carbon-tax model. But why struggle to mimic the desirable properties of a carbon tax, with all the complications this entails, if you can simply have a carbon tax?

The standard answer is politics. The EPA can regulate power-plant emissions without new legislation, whereas a carbon tax requires Congress to act. The need to build political support is a formidable obstacle but not an insuperable one.

Granted, some Republicans oppose a carbon tax merely because

it recognizes climate change as a problem requiring action. And many more Republicans oppose a carbon tax – even one offset by tax cuts elsewhere – simply because it is a new tax. Among this latter group, at least, the argument can be recast: The idea is not so much to impose a new tax as it is to reduce government intervention in the economy.

Instead of listing all the fine things a carbon tax could buy, advocates of such a tax should simply offer to give back all the revenue in the form of tax cuts elsewhere.

It’s a worthwhile trade because a tax is by far the best way to reduce carbon emissions, which again is the whole point of this exercise. Consider a modest tax of $16 a ton of carbon dioxide, rising at 4 percent a year above inflation. It would reduce power-sector emissions by more than the EPA proposals for the energy sector would, and curb emissions across the rest of the economy as well.

A $16 a ton tax would also add about 16 cents to the price of a gallon of gasoline and raise household energy costs by 5 percent to 20 percent, depending on the source.

Yes, families and businesses would be paying a new tax. But no, families and businesses would not be paying more tax. The new carbon tax would raise about $1 trillion over 10 years and almost $3 trillion over 20 – a handy sum.

That would be enough to send every U.S. resident a check for about $300 in the first year (with bigger checks to follow). It would be more than enough to cut the corporate tax rate to 28 percent from 35 percent, for instance, or take a bite out of payroll taxes, or some of both.

This would inevitably lead to an argument over which taxes to cut. But at least it would be framed by a shared assumption: that a carbon tax is good policy.

M

arissa Gagliano appreciates variety, a big reason she became the rare middle-schooler to support a move across the country.

The recent Wheaton Academy graduate grew up in Florida but endorsed the move to suburban Chicago in the middle of sixth grade to accommodate a job transfer for her father, Paul.

“I was kind of pushing the move for some reason,” Gagliano said. “I don’t know why now, but I’m the kind of person, I just like change. I grew up in Florida so I wanted snow and to see different seasons, so I was excited about that.”

Gagliano, a South Elgin resident who lives within the St. Charles North school district, didn’t mind more of the same when it came to softball.

It was her opponents who grew tired of seeing Gagliano on base incessantly.

Gagliano is the Kane County Chronicle Softball Player of the Year after a senior season in which her on-base percentage swelled to .723.

She batted .623 while igniting the top of the Warriors’ order with her blazing speed out of the left-handed hitters’ batter’s box.

Against several opponents, Gagliano’s biggest test was avoiding complacency and overconfidence.

“Sometimes that was hard, actually,” Gagliano said. “But then you have to look at it, every team you play, every person you’re [up against], you’re equal to them. The score starts out zero to zero. ... You may have the better team or more skill as a person rather than that other person, but in that case you just use it as practice and learn from it because you can learn from every at-bat, every inning and every out, so you take that and learn from that for the future.”

“She actually played better against better pitching,” said Warriors coach Paul Gagliano, Marissa’s father. “She was very successful against Montini and St. Francis and some of the bigger schools in [the Suburban Christian Conference], and our nonconference games, we played a very tough nonconference schedule, a lot of 4A schools and better 3A schools. The better the pitching, the more she rose to the challenge.”

While defenders seldom solved Gagliano’s combination of bunts, slaps and occasional full cuts, her ability to steal bases made her combined 27 walks and hit by pitches equally problematic for the opposition. Gagliano stole 24 bases in 25 tries, with the one caught stealing coming in a regional semifinal loss to Rosary in which the Royals guessed right on a pitch-out.

Defensively, the strongarmed Gagliano played a sparkling shortstop, making only three errors in 124 attempts for the 14-11 Warriors.

Gagliano plays center field during travel season, when she has been teammates with Alyssa Buddle through both the Wasco Diamonds and their current travel program, the Beverly Bandits. Buddle and Gagliano are close friends but Buddle lauded Gagliano’s competitive focus, saying the two seldom exchange words during games, even when they’re next to each other in the dugout.

Buddle also marveled at Gagliano’s successful shift from a right-handed hitter to a lefty part-way through high school so Gagliano could beat out more infield hits.

“I compliment her on that

so much,” Buddle said. “It’s so hard to switch and be successful, especially on the level we play now on travel and everything. As a right-handed hitter, I couldn’t imagine switching over.”

A four-year varsity standout for the Warriors, Gagliano said she made a relatively late decision to attend Wheaton Academy heading into high school after finishing her middle school days at Harvest Christian in Elgin.

“A friend of ours showed me Wheaton Academy, and I grew up going to a Christian school, and so I really liked that part,” Gagliano said.

“I knew they had a softball program at Wheaton Academy, and although it wasn’t up to the standards of St. Charles North, I knew I could be a person that could potentially grow it and also keep going to a Christian school like I grew up and I was comfortable with.”

Dierks tapping into Vikings’ promising youth

In coach Greg Dierks’ 25th season with the Vikings, a youth movement yielded encouraging results, spreading optimism that the Vikings might not be far from a program breakthrough.

With half of Geneva’s 14-player roster being fresh-

men and sophomores – and all seven of those playing key roles – Geneva went 21-13, serving notice that the Vikings are on the upswing and earning Dierks Kane County Chronicle Softball Coach of the Year honors.

“The youth in the program, this is probably the most that we’ve had in terms of maybe the average age or whatever of the kids,” Dierks said. “This might be the most in that direction that we’ve gone, but it was clear from day one when we started try-

outs that our freshmen and sophomores that we had belonged there and were ready to go.”

St. Charles East and St. Charles North have been the glamor programs around the Tri-Cities in recent years, Greg Dierks with both St. Charles schools reaching the IHSA Class 4A state championship game within the past four years.

The Vikings aren’t yet at that level, but Dierks is proud of how far Geneva softball has come since he took over in 1990.

“At the time our program, it was a little bit primitive,” Dierks said. “Our girls at the time, most of them probably had to find their glove in the closet before tryouts. It was something that was going to take some time to develop to get to the point that we compete year in and year out. It didn’t make it any less enjoyable back then, though. … It

was still a lot of fun and the girls always worked hard.”

If the current batch of Vikings’ work ethic matches their talent, big things could be coming.

Most of the Vikings’ most productive players are slated to return, including talented shortstop Anna Geary, who will be a senior next season.

It’s the program’s rising juniors and sophomores, however, who could give Geneva staying power.

Kane County’s first threegame losing streak since a four-game skid in mid-May still left the club with a Midwest League-best 45-25 record at the All-Star break.

After the series ended with a pair of walk-off losses, however, it’s imperative the Cougars don’t give in to any brimming sense of foreboding. A strong core remains for more of the same success in the second half, and a group of oft-described “baseball rats” knows it. For the most part.

“We’ve just kind of been flowing,” said third baseman Jordan Hankins, one of four Cougars All-Stars set to travel to West Michigan for today’s

game. “It’s not really that one person that’s getting the job done, it’s everybody contributing. It’s just a good run right now and these are the types of runs you want to try and last as long as you can or whatever, because they don’t last long.”

On Sunday, eight of the nine position players who started the Cougars’ April 3 season opener at Quad Cities took the field in Beloit. They had clinched the first-half Western Division title eight days earlier behind a pitching staff that’s second in the 16-team MWL with a 3.07 ERA and a balanced attack with a sixth-ranked batting average (.259) While a few holdovers remain from the 2013 team that struggled to a franchise-worst 55-80 record, the Cougars are mostly a concoction of players who advanced to the short-season Northwest League cham-

pionship series last September with Boise.

Per the minor league cycle, new faces have and will shuttle through the clubhouse because of promotions, injuries and the recently concluded Major League Baseball FirstYear Player Draft.

Thus far, that’s been a fairly seamless process thanks to a diligence that manager Mark Johnson didn’t always see from the 2013 club, which also was coming off a Northwest League championship series appearance.

“Don’t like to bombard them with a lot of new information,” Johnson said. “Just let them go play, let them settle in a little bit, pick their spots.”

The Cougars will open the second half at 6:30 p.m.

“Everyone’s getting better,” outfielder Shawon Dunston Jr. said. “Everyone’s here for a reason and everyone pushes each other to do their best. We have a lot of good players here.

Even guys who don’t play every day are still good players, and we just push each other to the best of our ability.”

Then more details surfaced, and the trip went from intriguing to almost toogood-to-be-true.

Three months ago, Sterling was contacted by Tim Massie, his former Campton United soccer coach, wondering if he’d be up for a soccer-themed church mission trip to Brazil through Christ Community Church in St. Charles.

Then Sterling found out the World Cup was going on in Brazil throughout the trip, scheduled for Friday to June 29. Then Sterling found out the group was staying in Manaus, one of the host cities for World Cup matches. Then Sterling found out one of the United States’ matches is scheduled for Manaus while the group is in town Sunday against Portugal.

Seriously?

“I was like, ‘No way, that’s crazy, but Brazil is a big country, we probably won’t be by

the [matches],’ ” Sterling, an avid World Cup fan, said of his initial response upon learning the international soccer showdown coincided with the trip. “And then two weeks later … when I went to the meeting, they said we were going to be in Manaus and the stadium in Manaus is a golf shot away from where we’re staying.

So, obviously, we’re going on a soccer ministry trip, everyone I’m with are socJake Sterling cer lovers, so they were like ‘Yes! We’re going to be at the World Cup, that’s crazy.’

“I’m going for the mission trip, but considering the World Cup is going on then, that’s just the cherry on top of everything.”

Sterling said the group of 14 trip members will run camps for Brazilian children at which they’ll play soccer together.

They also plan to run contests outside the stadium on match days; Switzerland and Honduras are scheduled to clash in Manaus on June 25.

of the group might consider trying to attend the U.S.-Portugal match if tickets can reasonably be purchased.

There have been reports of anger and protests in Brazil about the cost of hosting the World Cup, such as building the new “Arena da Amazonas” in Manaus. Sterling said he and his family are keeping an eye on the news reports.

“I think it’s going to be a lot of … I think chaos is the right word for it, but I’m not worried,” Sterling said. “I’m excited to experience it all.”

Brazilians speak Portugese but Sterling said the sport of soccer has a knack of minimizing language barriers.

Sterling, a defender, is preparing to play college soccer this fall at Spring Arbor University (Michigan). He said maintaining his summer training program during the trip will be a challenge.

Any interruptions to his formal regimen might be counterbalanced by picking up some slick moves from the locals.

“I actually can’t wait to just get lit up by players.”

Sterling said. “I know they’re going to show me up. I’m so excited for it.”

Junior left-hander Matt O’Sullivan scattered two walks and one strikeout in a complete-game two-hitter in the semifinals, beating a foe from Michigan. The Knights also defeated a Michigan team in the finals, with Nick Stratman throwing five strong innings for the win.

Designated hitter Kevin Fuchs went 6 for 8 in the tournament.

“Kevin Fuchs had one heck of a weekend,” Aversa said.

He wasn’t alone.

Staying put: The IHSA Board of Directors on Monday elected to delay previously discussed changes to IHSA Policy 17 – namely a new multiplier waiver and “success factor” – until the 2015-16 school year.

Among the changes put on hold: elevating Aurora Christian football from Class 3A to 4A. The IHSA initially voted on the matter in February.

Elsewhere, the board also amended the “success factor” stipulation. The original policy stated a school would be subject to the protocol if it won two state final trophies in four seasons. The change calls for one of the two trophies to be won in the two most recent school years.

Marmion touted its young athletes throughout another banner wrestling season last winter.

Over the weekend, a few budding Cadets enjoyed some seasoning in the sun.

Anthony Cheloni (145 pounds) and A.J. Jaffe (126) – who will be a sophomore and junior in the fall, respectively – helped Team Illinois to the Cadet National Duals freestyle title in Daytona Beach, Florida.

With Marmion assistant Donny Reynolds looking and shouting on as one of Team Illinois’ co-coaches, Cheloni and Jaffe flourished behind their conditioning and offense, losing one match combined.

“Anthony did a really good job. He’s starting to get his shots going, and he’s getting more comfortable in taking his shots,” Reynolds said. “He’s dangerous from just about every position. If you stop for a split second, he can probably pin you from a lot of different positions that most people aren’t aware of.”

Ditto for Jaffe.

“A.J., he kind of went through a slump probably in early May, but he looks like he’s starting to come on,” Reynolds said. “He’s wrestling real well, finally getting his offensive attacks going.”

Jaffe weighed in at 126 but competed mostly at 132 as Team Illinois shuffled its lineup because of a few lingering injuries.

Neither Cheloni nor Jaffe wrestled in the final dual against Pennsylvania Red – a 49-27 Illinois victory – for that reason, Reynolds said.

Reynolds joined Lockport coach Josh Oster and Naperville-based Overtime School of Wrestling coach Kerry Boumans on the Team Illinois staff.

“We don’t really, per se, call any one of us the head coach,” Reynolds said. “We just share the duties of who’s going to approach the table or talk to the refs if we need to do that.”

Goodbye, Toledo: Kaneland scored an incomplete on its spring break baseball trip to Cincinnati after most of the team’s early April itinerary was rained out.

Just as moving up from Florida didn’t faze Gagliano, neither does relocating to Virginia.

As for the softball side of the equation, she’s eager to be pushed.

“I’m ready to move on,” she said. “I think the four years of Wheaton Academy and with travel definitely has prepared me for Radford and Division I. I feel pretty confident going into college. I’m ready for a change and ready for the next level.”

GENEVA – A pair of Geneva football players received scholarship offers Monday as junior offensive tackle Loudon Vollbrecht received a scholarship offer from Illinois and senior receiver Pace Temple was offered by Wyoming.

It was the first scholarship offer for both players.

Vollbrecht, 6-foot-7 and 298 pounds, attended a camp Friday at Illinois and said he was hopeful Pace Temple based on his showing there that the Illini’s interest might solidify.

“Of course it’s great news,” Vollbrecht said. “It didn’t take me by surprise, but it definitely made my week already.”

Vollbrecht said he might attend a camp at Michigan State later this week.

North Carolina State and Syracuse are among the other programs showing interest in Vollbrecht, who started for the Vikings as a sophomore.

Geneva senior quarterback Daniel Santacaterina committed to Northern Illinois in the

Marmion graduate reaches plea deal ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Marmion graduate Graham Glasgow, a junior offensive lineman at Michigan, pleaded guilty Monday to a charge of operating a vehicle while visibly impaired, according to published reports.

As part of the plea deal, the government amended the charge from operating while intoxicated Graham to operating Glasgow while visibly impaired, The Associated Press reported. The incident reportedly occurred March 15.

Wolverines football coach Brady Hoke announced in March that Glasgow, who started all 13 games for Michigan last season, would miss some of spring practice and be suspended for the season-opener against Appalachian State on Aug. 30 because of a “violation of team expectations.”

LAKE FOREST – In the two years that took Jordan Lynch from a Mid-American Conference unknown to a Heisman Trophy finalist, the sidelines were never a familiar place.

But the sidelines are now Lynch’s classroom, a place for the former Northern Illinois star quarterback to observe his latest opportunity to convince naysayers – and he knows there are plenty – that they’re wrong about his chances.

Lynch faces a serious uphill climb just to make the Bears’ roster as an unsigned free agent running back. As many defenders as Lynch barreled over in his two years as NIU’s starter when he carried the ball 586 times for 3,735 yards and 42 touchdowns, Lynch understands the competitive traffic he will have to navigate to hold down one of the backfield spots the Bears will fill heading into the regular season.

So as unfamiliar as the sidelines may seem to him, Lynch understands it’s where he must start.

“I’m a rookie. I’ve got to learn my way, I’ve got to earn my way on this field,” Lynch said last week.

In addition to trying to buck the odds by making an NFL roster after going undrafted, Lynch is trying to do so while trying to learn a position that gives him the best chance to stick with the Bears. Although Lynch averaged 20 carries and 137.1 yards a game last year as a college senior, working fulltime at running back is – in his words – a night-and-day difference.

Where playing quarterback was more mental than physical, Lynch finds himself focusing on being the bruising type of runner Bears general manager Phil Emery liked when he decided to take a chance on Lynch, who grew up only 45 minutes from the Bears training facilities.

It’s a physical running style that seems to suit Lynch just fine, putting his emphasis on trying to digest as much of the Bears’ running game as he

possibly can. He spends extra time on the practice field working with Bears running backs coach Skip Peete while also relying on teammates such as Matt Forte, who doesn’t fight the same job security issues that Lynch does.

Understanding that he likely will have a difficult time making the Bears’ 53-man roster, all Lynch can do is push himself as hard as he can.

“I’m used to the pounding and the beating,” Lynch said.

“I’m a blue-collar kid from the city, and that’s the only way I know how to play football.”

But effort alone can only take Lynch so far. In addition to Forte, fourth-round draft pick Ka’Deem Carey, Michael Ford and Shaun Draughn are ahead of Lynch on the depth chart. Bears coach Marc Trestman said after rookie minicamp that he considers Lynch a “real football player” who didn’t look out of place doing what will be asked of him at his new position.

He also has spent time on special teams, which could be another option for a 6-foot, 217-pound rookie to make a living at. Trestman said after minicamp workouts that he hopes to put Lynch in a position to succeed and make the team. For Lynch, that means spending extra hours in the film room trying to pick up on schemes and other tidbits that could help him succeed.

Still, holding down a roster spot won’t be easy.

Heading into this week’s mandatory minicamp and then throughout next month’s training camp, Lynch will continue to try to convince his coaches he is worth keeping around. He is well aware of what he is up against but won’t allow the size of the challenge or those who think he isn’t NFL material stand in his way.

“I’ve been at the bottom before,” Lynch said. “I’ve just got to keep fighting, keep learning the playbook and just come out here every day ready to work.

There’s probably a lot of doubts out there [and people saying], ‘This kid can’t play running back in the NFL,’ but that just kind of fuels the fire.”

Try one of today’s most popular collectibles, a vintage motor oil can. There is very little information available about the cans, but there’s a lot about the companies that made the oil. So it’s easy to date a can by its logo and style, which makes it easy to find great early examples. The tin can was invented in 1810 to hold food for Napoleon’s army. Cans were made by hand in the early 19th century. About six could be made by one man in an hour. By 1900 the main products stored in tin cans were food and petroleum products.

Cans made around the turn of the 20th century had a soldered seam on the side that looks like a gray strip.

Cardboard cans were introduced in the 1940s but were widely used from the 1950s to the 1980s. The first soft drink aluminum cans were used in 1953. The first aluminum cans for motor oil were made in 1958. The square cardboard quart oil can came into use in the 1960s. Most popular with collectors are the quart size, then the gallon, then the 5-gallon, and it does not matter if the can is full or empty. An unusual Marathon motor oil container sold in 2014 at a William Morford auction. It’s shaped and decorated to look like an oil well. The 15-inch-high can has the brand’s “Running Man” logo, a silhouette of an ancient Greek runner and the slogan “Best in the long run.”

The logo dates back to the 1920s, but the brand was purchased by the Ohio Oil Co. in 1930. *** Q: I have a New York Mets pennant from the 1969 World Series. It’s red with white and blue lettering that reads “New York Mets, 1969 National League Champions.” It has the Mets logo, Mr. Met, and the words “World Series.” The last names of all the players and the manager are listed. The pennant is in good condition. What is it worth?

Fleischmann was taken over by Modelleisenbahn (Model Railways) in 2008 but continues as a separate brand.

Your model steam engine was made between about 1950 and 1964. The steam engine sells for under $50.

This pyramid-shaped tin/lithographed can is hand-soldered. It probably was made before 1940. It sold for $4,830 at a William Morford auction in Cazenovia, N.Y., in March 2014.

A: A set of “personality identification playing cards” like yours was developed in 2003 to help members of the U.S. military identify “wanted” Iraqi government officials and party chairmen. Each card had the person’s picture, if available, his or her last known location, and their government or committee position. High-ranking officials were pictured on the aces and face cards, and less important people on low-number cards. Saddam Hussein was pictured on the highest-ranking card, the ace of spades. The day the deck of cards was announced, an enterprising civilian downloaded the images from the U.S. Department of Defense website and offered them for sale on eBay. HBO’s ‘The Leftovers’: A biblical event leaves a sorrowful mystery

By HANK STUEVER The Washington Post Whether anyone wants to spend the summer staring directly at sorrow and regret, that’s precisely what HBO and the creators of the new drama “The Leftovers” seem to have in mind.

There’s nothing warm or welcoming about it, nor is there meant to be. Where the network’s “True Detective” occasionally broke its dolefulness with the slyest, philosophically artful wink at an audience riveted by its mystery, “The Leftovers” grafts more unhappiness onto unhappiness. Where “Game of Thrones” revels in even its most gruesome developments, it exists safely within the bounds of fantasy, so slay away. “The Leftovers” mainly acts as a means to deliver the worst news about human nature.

Yet, despite the downer language of this review, the show delivers on an exceedingly intriguing premise, with some of the most beguilingly morose performances delivered this year. It’s a strange but good wallow.

Using executive producer and writer Tom Perrotta’s sad and thoughtful novel as a template for a much broader story, “The Leftovers” (premiering Sunday, June 29) is one of the coldest TV shows I’ve ever seen. It possesses almost no irony, few verbose monologues, a bare minimum of sharp moves, and a style that is conspicuously drab. Watching it produces a numbness that isn’t anything like grief, but more like the tingly approach of a Novocaine local. The tongue can’t help returning to the hurt spot.

Justin Theroux, who until “The Leftovers” has been sorely underutilized as a lead actor, stars as Kevin Garvey, the police chief of Mapleton, N.Y., a small town still coming to grips with a global crisis.

Three years earlier, on Oct. 14, one in every 50 or so people randomly vanished in a single instance – a total of 2 percent of global population. They didn’t burn up or float away. They’re just inexplicably gone.

To demonstrate, “The Leftovers” opens on that ordinary day with the scene of a mother trying to run errands and carry on a phone conversation while handling a screaming infant. While she fiddles with her keys in the front seat, her baby’s wails in the car seat behind her suddenly cease. Gone. She gets out of the car and screams in panic; so does a boy across the parking lot who saw his father

You’ve probably seen or imagined something like this if you’ve ever heard or were taught fundamentalist stories of the Christian rapture, when the souls of the faithful are Hoovered up into heaven while the sinners remain for apocalypse. (“The Leftovers” theme sequence references the kitsch paintings seen in free pamphlets – souls leaving buildings, cars, airplanes – this time rendered as Renaissance ceiling work.)

Lots of people are gone, some six million Americans. “Poof” becomes a verb – he poofed, she poofed, the rest of us still here did not poof. Celebrities poofed, too, their absence noted during a cable news special on the third anniversary of “the Sudden Departure”: Bonnie Raitt vanished as did Anthony Bourdain, Condoleezza Rice, Jennifer Lopez, Shaquille O’Neal, Pope Benedict XVI and Gary Busey, among others.

“I get the pope,” a bartender remarks to Chief Garvey. “But Gary [bleepin’] Busey?”

To some degree, I admire how “The Leftovers” is averse to explanations, because that’s the whole point: The people left behind must forever puzzle it out.

(Could it happen again? How did it happen? Why did it happen?)

It resists a Hollywood temptation to lavishly depict the Sudden Departure in scenes of chaos and confusion, instead fixating on the lingering psychic wounds of the event. In the four episodes sent to critics, “The Leftovers” also sparingly avoids flashbacks, which is a surprise given that the series is co-created by Damon Lindelof, one of the two men behind ABC’s “Lost,” which used flashback (and flash-forward) as a narrative necessity.

Frankly, a few more flashbacks in “The Leftovers’s” first few episodes might better acquaint viewers with what sort of story this show wants to tell, besides a depressing one.

Three years on, we figure out that some Americans viewed the departure as an act of God, flocking to the comforts of belief, while others abandoned faith entirely. Bad people disappeared as well as good people. One woman in Mapleton (Carrie Coon as Nora Durst) has become the town’s emblem for the arbitrary nature of the event: She lost her husband and both of her children. As such, she’s a featured speaker at the town’s Oct. 14 anniversary vigil, where the mayor (Amanda Warren) unveils a sculpture of a woman letting go of a floating baby.

Using Mapleton as a microcosm of society, “The Leftovers” is especially preoccupied with how everyday life changed. This is a world permanently spooked, jangled; the emotional damage cannot be mended. Characters have made drastic life changes, including joining cults – an act of intentional disappearance in response to the Sudden Departure.

“The Leftovers” is intricately imagined, but it also has an off-putting reliance on ambiguity and obfuscation. It almost goes without saying that it’s still difficult to trust Lindelof four years after the miserable wrap-up of “Lost,” a deserted-island saga he co-created that was so burdened with unanswered questions and fuzzy symbology that it became one of modern television’s favorite chew-toys. In promoting “The Leftovers,” Lindelof has described the heated reactions to “Lost’s” finale as a chastening experience, and one that he’s not eager to repeat.

With all that in mind, I’m not turned off by “The Leftovers’s” lack of easy answers.

It’s aimed at men who place ads on dating sites and then wonder why they can’t meet “quality” women.

I’m an educated, decent-looking, middle-aged widow who has dated quite a lot through such ads and local social groups. Yes, it can be a jungle out there, but the Internet is a wonderful tool for bringing people together.

I live in a small town, and the pool of eligible men is smaller here than in metropolitan areas.

That said, there are few profiles that attract my attention and that of my divorced/widowed friends.

Gentlemen, some pointers: 1. Smile! A dour expression is unpleasant.

2. We may want to see you with your shirt off after we get to know

5. Consider a shave. Some women like men with facial hair; the majority of the ones I know do not. About 75 percent of men over 50 have a mustache, beard or

6. If you’re married and miserable, for goodness sake, go for marriage counseling or get a divorce. But please don’t deceive women who want to meet a nice guy to share life with.

The sooner a stroke is treated, the better the recovery Dear Doctor K: What are the warning signs of stroke? Why is it important to be able to recognize them?

Dear Reader: Nothing makes me sadder than to see someone suffer a stroke that could have been avoided. Not all strokes can be avoided, but many produce warning symptoms that can trigger preventive actions – if they are recognized.

Your brain relies on a steady supply of oxygen-rich blood to do everything. When the blood supply to any part of your brain is suddenly interrupted, it can have serious effects. You may lose strength, have trouble coordinating your movements, and have trouble speaking or understanding what people are saying to you. You may not be able to think clearly or remember things. You may have trouble seeing or hearing.

A stroke occurs when an injury to a blood vessel deprives a part of the brain of its constant blood supply. As a result, brain cells can die, taking with them the ability to move, speak, feel or think.

If the brain’s blood supply is quickly restored, a person may recover from a stroke with little or no disability. That’s why it is vital to recognize the warning signs of stroke in yourself and in

The following Act FAST (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) checklist can help you determine whether someone else is having a stroke.

If the answer to any of the questions below is yes, call 911: 1. Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

2. Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

3. Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Are the words slurred? Does he or she fail to repeat the sentence correctly?

4. Time: If the answer to any of these questions is yes, time is important. Call 911 or get to the hospital fast.

Early stroke treatment increases the chances of preventing significant brain cell death and disability. One of the main stroke treatment drugs is recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). It must be given within three hours of the start of stroke symptoms – and earlier is better.

I had a patient who suffered from atrial fibrillation, an abnormal heart rhythm that increases the risk that blood clots will form in the heart, travel to the brain and cause a stroke. I could not convince him to take an anticoagulant drug to keep clots from forming.

In his early 60s, he suddenly had a devastating stroke that ended his capacity to work and to do the things he most enjoyed in life. Ever since, I’ve asked myself if I could have somehow done a better job of explaining why taking that medicine was so important. I hope the advice I’ve given here will help my readers take these warning signs seriously.

The only day he doesn’t lift is on Sunday, and that’s when we can spend quality time together. David has been “encouraging” me to join him lifting weights at the gym once or twice a week. I’d love to, but I’ve got a nice body shape and I don’t want to look like a muscle-bound female.

I talked with the gym manager and he said several women lift weights just to tone their bodies and that women cannot bulk up like men do. He didn’t explain. Because of this, it is physiologically impossible for them to build the same muscle masses as males. Also, females do not produce the sex hormone testosterone (only males do), which promotes muscle growth. You received the true facts.

It is, of course, better to draw conclusions from logical deduction. In this deal, South is in four hearts. West leads the spade nine.

How should East deduce the correct defense?

North made a game-invitational limit raise, showing four or more hearts, 10-12 support points (here, all high-card points, no short-suit points) and eight losers (here, two in each suit).

East knows that West has led a singleton or high from a doubleton – but which?

East should ask himself, “If my partner has a singleton, how many spades does that give declarer?”

Here, the answer is five. And would South have opened one heart with five spades in his hand?

It would have been most unlikely, because with 5-5 in the majors, South would have opened one spade, not one heart.

So, East should deduce that his partner has led from a doubleton and should signal encouragement with his spade seven.

Note finally that declarer does best to call for dummy’s spade king at trick one, making it more likely that East will have a reflex reaction and win with his ace.
