Batavia celebrates Flag Day connection

Garrett was among those attending an ice cream social at the Peg Bond Center in Batavia. The event was to celebrate the 99th anniversary of Flag Day and a fundraiser for the annual Fourth of July fireworks show, which is funded solely through private donations.

Flag Day has special significance for Batavia and Aurora.

Bernard J. Cigrand, the “father of Flag Day,” was a resident of Batavia and later, Aurora. He campaigned to establish a day to celebrate the adoption of the stars and stripes as the flag of the United States.

“We take great pride in this honor,” Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke told the crowd Sunday. The event kicked off a year-long celebration leading up to the 100th anniversary of Flag Day next year.

Cigrand was born in 1866 in Waubeka, Wisconsin, and moved to Batavia in 1912, according to Batavia Depot Museum officials. Cigrand practiced dentistry in a house he built on South Batavia Avenue.

In 1885, he started his campaign, writing newspaper and magazine articles in support of the idea of a Flag Day. President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 issued a proclamation calling for a nationwide Flag Day ob-

servance. But it was not until 1949, 17 years after Cigrand’s death, that Congress designated June 14 as Flag Day. Cigrand moved to Aurora in 1932. He later died of a heart attack.

The day also featured a cemetery walk in the city’s West Side Cemetery to benefit the Batavia Arts Council and the Batavia Historical Society. Tom Van Cleave said he had fun portraying Illinois Supreme Court Justice Samuel Lockwood, a former Batavia resident.

“I enjoyed seeing all the people I know,” Van Cleave said. “It was also interesting learning about Samuel Lockwood.”

Lannert Group Aldermen hear feedback for Strategic Plan Update to redesign welcome signs

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Aldermen Monday approved a $19,000 contract with a company to redesign Geneva’s welcome signs.

The contract was awarded to the Lannert Group of Geneva.

The city’s welcome signs are about 25 years old and in a state of rapid deterioration, officials said.

Of the four firms responding to the city’s request for proposals, Lannert’s was the lowest bid.

The highest bids were from Vasilion Architects of Batavia, at $50,600 and Upland Design of Plainfield at $40,510; the second-lowest bid was $23,000 from Hitchcock Design Group of Naperville, officials said.

Because welcome signs traditionally provide a first impression, a sense of place, a point of reference for visitors and a source of community spirit and pride for citizens, replacing them was a priority, officials said.

The city’s Economic Development Department documented the location and condition of existing signs, determined locations for 18 primary and secondary new signs.

The department also formed a working group consisting of staff from administration, economic and community development and public works to define detailed expectations for new signage.

Lannert will begin work immediately, according to its contract.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles aldermen Monday heard a summary of comments collected for the update to the city’s Strategic Plan.

Greg Kuhn and Cristi Musser of Naperville-based firm Sikich presented the feedback during the city’s Government Operations Committee meeting Monday night.

The presentation served as a listening session for aldermen to have background information for upcoming workshops to update the city’s 2008-14 Strategic Plan, City Administrator Mark Koenen said.

Sikich conducted 18 structured interviews with various past and present city officials and leaders. The firm also held eight focus group sessions that lasted between 90 minutes and two hours each, Kuhn said.

The most common theme to emerge from the focus groups was the economy, including business and housing. Within that theme, the focus groups mentioned downtown St. Charles more often than other ares of the city, Musser said.

After Sikich’s presentation was complete, members of the public at Monday’s meeting were invited to give their input.

Richard Escalante, a St. Charles resident since 2012,

was the only audience member to speak after the presentation.

He suggested the city continue to expand its incentive program for downtown businesses and also support the expansion and retention of existing businesses from all areas of the city.

Escalante said he hopes the city will develop plans to address any decline in its state funding and be able to implement the ideas suggested in the strategic plan.

“I have some very high standards for city services, and this city meets or exceeds them,” Escalante said.

CENTER OF ATTENTION Norris Recreation Center celebrating 40th year

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – For 40 years, the John B. Norris Recreation Center has been getting area families in shape.

The Norris Recreation Center, at 1050 Dunham Road, St. Charles, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Dellora and Lester Norris donated the 70 acres on which St. Charles East High School sits today and made an initial gift of $4.25 million toward construction of a cultural arts center and a recreation center. The recreation center is named for one of the couple’s children.

The center includes four indoor tennis courts, an aerobics center and fitness area, as well as an Olympic-sized pool that is used by the St. Charles swim team. St. Charles School District 303 owns the property.

“What’s nice is that having the only indoor tennis facility in the Tri-Cities and having the only 50-meter indoor pool, and the fact that we are [an] aquatics, tennis and health club combination, it really serves families in a full capacity,” said Jon Monken, the center’s executive director. “It’s really been an asset to the community.”

Monken, a former St.

Charles alderman, has been at the center for 30 years, since it was set up as a nonprofit organization. The St. Charles Park District ran the facility for the first 10 years of its operation, he said.

The complex is continually being upgraded. New lights for the tennis courts soon will be installed, and the school district plans to renovate the pool next summer.

“A couple of years ago, they put in a whole new filtration system and air system,” Monken said.

Ellen Horyn, 70, of West Chicago started going to Norris Recreation Center shortly after it opened. She has an annual membership to the center.

“I really loved swimming, and there was no other place to swim at the time,” Horyn said. “It’s one of the best pools I have ever swam in.

The laps are wider, and the water temperature is perfect.

I don’t know what I would do without that place.”

“I love helping people become healthy and strong,” Turk said. “It’s very rewarding when they tell me that aches and pains have gone away, or they feel energized.

For instance, one of my seniors the other day told me that he threw away his blood pressure medicine. He no longer needs it. His doctor said, ‘See you in a year. Keep going to see Patti.’ When you help people like that, you forget about the paycheck.”

Those enrolled in her classes range from 14 years of age to almost 80 years old.

Turk likes that Norris Recreation Center is run as a nonprofit organization.

“They look at the bigger picture,” she said. “They look at the members and what their interests are.”

Both Monken and St.

Charles School District 303 Superintendent Don Schlomann believe the collaboration between the center and the St. Charles School District has been fruitful.

“It’s been a very good working partnership,” Monken said. “We’ve been able to operate in the black for all of our operational expenses.

Our memberships and our program fees make up all our revenues and pay for all our expenses.”

Schlomann agreed the partnership has been good.

“Swimming pools, as an example, are expensive items for communities to support, and the fact that we’re able to do it in a way that the pool is not just utilized by the school district is a much better use of a very expensive resource that is part of this community,” Schlomann said.

Flooded roads across Kane County snarled Monday’s evening rush hour, including closing Route 38 west of Peck Road. Kane County Emergency Management Director Don Bryant said the flooding caused problems across the area. He advised motorists to find a different route if they see water running over a roadway.

No candidates were on the ballot in the April 7 election, and no write-in candidates were submitted.

As of April 30, the board had three vacant seats when the terms of board members Debra Armstrong, Patricia Lunardon and Steve Nowak expired, and they chose not to run for another term.

Recently, one of the three vacancies was filled by Valerie Massa, who has attended one meeting. Massa said the board was planning to swear in another member at the meeting tonight.

“I wanted to help make a difference in the town,” Massa said. “Everyone always has an opinion, so I thought, ‘I have an opinion, I might just well do something about it.’ ” Massa said she applied for the seat because she thought other people would not be willing to give their time to fill the position.

“It’s a great town with a lot of potential, and if there is nobody there to help make decisions, I wanted to step up to the plate,” Massa said.

Born February 26, 1948, in Madison, Wisconsin, Virginia Scott Grom passed away peacefully June 12, 2015, surrounded by her family.

Ginny’s life took her on many adventures and she was actively planning her next adventures at the time of her passing. She graduated from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale with a BA and a Masters Degree in Education. He was born October 21, 1944 in Geneva, Illinois to William Verne and Naomi (Barnick) Cox. Bob grew up in La Fox, Illinois, where he attended the one room schoolhouse next to his family home. He completed his schooling in Geneva, graduating from Geneva High School in 1962. He was outstanding in many sports at GHS and made lifelong friends with whom he shared life at work and play until the end. He attended Western Illinois University where as a residence assistant he influenced the lives of many who proudly call him cherished friend.

After graduating from WIU, Bob proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1966-68.

It was while serving at Ft. Meade, Maryland, that he met his “Bride,” Jerry Lynn Swartz. They were married on March 15, 1969 and returned to make Geneva their home where they raised their son, Jeff, and their daughter, Shannon.

For 45 years, Bob worked for The State Bank of Geneva, serving in many capacities before retiring in 2009 as Director, Executive Vice President, and Senior Commercial Loan Officer. He continued to serve as a Director until February 2015.

Bob’s dedication and loyalty to the customers and employees of The State Bank of Geneva was second only to his love for his family and many friends.

Bob was actively involved in the community, serving on the Board of the Geneva Jaycees, the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, the Geneva Park District and the Geneva Academic Foundation. He served on the Geneva Police Pension Board, Geneva Park District Foundation and was a member of the Geneva American Legion Post 75. He was a Deacon of Fox Valley Presbyterian Church where he was a member since 1971.

Bob Cox is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Jerry Lynn; his cherished children, Jeff (Kelli) of Naperville and Shannon (Jeff) Gates of DeKalb; five adored grandchildren, Kaylyn and Madylyn Cox, and

Ashton, Lauren, and Megan Gates.

Coroner asked to explain hiring

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County Coroner Rob Russell will be expected to explain his hiring of a public relations consultant at the Finance Committee meeting scheduled for June 24, officials said.

Board member Cristina Castro, D-Aurora, chairwoman of the Judicial and Public Safety Committee, said although Russell has internal control as a countywide office holder, the committee wants him Rob Russell to explain the staff changes.

“You have internal control.

You can spend money as you wish,” Castro said. “We can question it. We can’t tell him ‘no,’ but we all have shared responsibilities. Asking why is that a good idea and asking why is this necessary – we have our jobs to do, too.”

Russell said he laid off two people to cut costs and planned to hire Jennifer Baustian of JMB Strategies of Elburn as a consultant at $125 an hour. Baustian is to work on a project basis, Russell said, with no minimum or maximum hours.

Her duties would include working on the website and news releases for different events. He said it would ultimately save money because she would not get benefits.

“Jennifer Baustian used to head the 911 center. She knows all the chiefs of police, all the fire departments,” Russell said. “It’s part of my job to know who to contact. It’s not right to put her on staff, but on a project basis. She is going to do tasks that need to be handled. I did not think there was a controversy.”

Russell said the contract between them has not been signed yet, so no invoices have been sent for payment.

The two who were laid off were compliance officer Joseph Tomanek, who earned an annual salary of $47,249.80

and Russell’s office manager, Sonia Lopez, who earned an annual salary of $46,410, according to county records.

Russell said Tomanek worked for his office about 18 months. Tomanek helped upgrade the office by updating the manual and got the office accredited by the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners – the first such accreditation in the state.

“He said, ‘My job is done.

I’m ready to retire,’ ” Russell said, of Tomanek’s acceptance of being laid off.

Lopez was an administrative assistant in the office for 14 years, Russell said. Her duties were redistributed to the one remaining administrative assistant and to himself.

“I chose to lay off two people,” Russell said. “That was not an easy thing to do. I did it to show goodwill to the county that at least I’m trying” to cut costs.

In reorganizing the office, Russell said he could cut costs in only two places – autopsies and personnel. He could not cut autopsies, so it had to be personnel.

“We are already stretched on the operational end. I could not lay off a deputy coroner,” Russell said. “I thought it was the best thing with salaries and benefits. ... I do not need permission to hire or fire.”

County board member Mark Davoust, R-St. Charles, said Russell “is trying to do the right things.”

“We do need some answers on how this happened,” Davoust said, of hiring Baustian. “We may find out, after further review, that this actually does make good sense and does save money.”

Russell said county board members do not have jurisdiction over his office in that way.

“I am an office holder. I don’t have to do, ‘Mother, may I?’ with every invoice,” Russell said. “I may decide to show up [at the finance committee] if this is the way they’re going to do business.

Every time I buy a pencil, I’m not going to justify it.”

Tea Party, conservatives to protest Obamacare in STC

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Conservatives and Tea Party activists will be calling for a repeal of Obamacare or end to Congressional subsidies, among other issues, at a rally from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday on the Main Street bridge in St. Charles.

It will cover what protest-

ers are calling an unfair exemption that Congress has under the Affordable Care Act, said organizer Mary Boncher of St. Charles, as well as taxpayers providing free health insurance to undocumented workers and others.

Boncher said members of the Kane County Patriots and Illinois Tea Party also are expected to be part of the protest.

BATAVIA – The Batavia City Council will hold a special meeting next Monday because Monday’s heavy rains and subsequent flooding caused four aldermen to miss the Batavia City Council meeting.

The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave. One of the items aldermen will vote on is whether the city should install a pedestrian crossing with a raised concrete median at Houston Street and North Batavia Avenue (Route 31). At a prior Committee of the Whole meeting, aldermen voted, 8-4, against installing the proposed crossing.

Stan Oke, the owner of Batavia Avenue Mobil gas station – at the southwest corner of the intersection – told aldermen the proposed concrete median would significantly impact access to his business.

Batavia Police Chief Gary Schira had voiced concerns that putting a crosswalk at the intersection would make it more dangerous, and said he would rather have pedestrians and bicyclists cross at the signalized intersection at Wilson Street and Route 31, just south of Houston Street and Batavia Avenue.

John Gamble, the chairman of the Batavia Bicycle Commission, presented a petition signed by more than 200 people imploring Batavia aldermen to move ahead with the pedestrian crossing.

He said the concrete median would allow for a safe area for pedestrians to stand until traffic has cleared, so they can cross the street.

New accessible sidewalk ramps, signage and a raised concrete median had been proposed for the intersection. In 2012, the city received federal funding for pedestrian crossing improvements to eight intersections along Routes 25 and 31.

Lawmakers should make it tougher to build illegal firearms using 3-D printers THE WASHINGTON POST

In the 1993 thriller “In the Line of Fire,” a would-be assassin painstakingly builds a plastic gun that he could slip past magnetometers – and into a room with the president. Nowadays, all he would have to do is press “print.”

Manufacturing plastic guns is no longer the stuff of Hollywood; it’s an easy and inexpensive process. The ever-wider availability of 3-D printers allows all sorts of people to create all sorts of objects, including firearms, given the right schematics.

Defense Distributed, an early innovator in this field, created and distributed blueprints for a plastic handgun in 2013,

before the federal government ordered the group to take them down. By that time, the information had already been copied, and it remains accessible. Since 2013, enthusiasts have created plastic revolvers and plastic rifles, and they have used 3-D printers to fashion gun parts that turn semiautomatic guns into fully automatic weapons.

The 1988 Undetectable Firearms Act banned the production, transfer and possession of guns that magnetometers can’t detect, requiring at least 3.7 ounces of steel to be in every firearm created or carried in the United States.

Congress reauthorized the law in 2013. That’s better than nothing, but it’s not enough.

Legislators should have made

the law stronger, as Rep. Steve Israel, D-New York, recently proposed doing.

Israel argues that the act contains a large loophole.

A professional or amateur gun-maker can legally produce a plastic weapon with a removable chunk of steel in it and legally sell or give it to someone else, who could easily discard the metal element and carry a deadly weapon anywhere.

Israel wants to require producers and sellers of plastic guns to include a metal piece that can’t be removed.

If outfits such as Defense Distributed wanted to enable people to build legal firearms, they would have to create schematics for weapons that contain critical, functional

elements made of steel.

If, that is, the State Department lets them. State has moved to restrict online publication of “technical data” that can be used to construct weapons, demanding that federal officials give their approval first.

The government claims that distributing, say, plastic gun schematics online is essentially an export of sensitive weapons information to foreign countries, and State has the authority to regulate arms exports under a Cold War-era law aimed at preventing weapons information from falling into Soviet hands. Keeping plastic gun schematics away from foreign terrorist organizations is a worthy national security

goal now.

Worthy, but near-impossibly hard. Plastic gun blueprints are already on websites over which the U.S. government has no control.

The State Department might also run into legal trouble for imposing a possibly unconstitutional prior restraint on the speech of plastic gun designers eager to share their work.

We can’t blame State for trying, but we put more hope in Israel’s initiative to restrict the production of undetectable plastic weapons.

His policy wouldn’t end the threat; the determined would still be able to work around it.

But it would help reduce the number of undetectable guns in circulation.

To the Editor: As we send more jobs to China and buy more cheap products, we are funding a major economic rival and military threat.

In the pursuit of less-expensive production costs, American companies are using tax breaks to jeopardize our future.

China’s government is still a communist regime bent on expanding its military sphere of influence. It’s also busily hacking our government sites and stealing secrets. And, while we take no action, they manipulate their currency to further undermine our economy.

While our politicians reward corporations moving jobs overseas, they advocate allowing President Barack Obama fast-track status to go forward on the TPP. Thus, we add another dozen nations that will rip us off like China.

Kaneland rallies to take third place in Class 3A Knights’ postseason run

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com EAST PEORIA – Newly-awarded medals swung from Kaneland softball players’ necks late Saturday morning as seven seniors, nine juniors, two sophomores and a freshman collaborated with their coaches to hoist a trophy.

“It would be nice to be playing in the other game, but it’s still great that we’ve made it here and that we got third,” Knights junior left fielder Courtney Davis said. “It’s a great accomplishment.”

If it was any consolation, Kaneland’s 7-1 victory against Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin in the Class 3A third-place game ended a few minutes before Washington defeated Marengo, 2-1, for the state title at a bustling EastSide Centre, whose officials were bent on staying ahead of stormy weather.

Mugging for photos when they weren’t embracing teammates, family and friends, the Knights arguably appeared as joyous as any other team to anyone gathered at the spacious recreation complex for anything other than softball.

“We just approached it as there’s only two teams in the state of Illinois that get to win their last game,” senior righthander Angie Morrow said, “and we wanted to be one of those two teams.”

A staunch closing outing from the Wisconsin-bound Morrow (seven innings, six hits, one run, five strikeouts, two walks) and a six-run, fifth-inning outburst propelled the Knights to the program’s first state trophy.

Kaneland (25-9) used five hits and two Griffins errors to fuel the fifth-inning outburst, which saw seven straight Knights reach base with one out.

Beginning the game at 9 a.m., one hour earlier than originally scheduled, the Knights admittedly took their time in adjusting to SHG junior right-hander Whitney David’s off-speed array.

“She was a little slower than we were used to in the postseason, so it took … a

bit to really get on her,” Davis said. “But we waited on her. The umpire had a smaller zone, so we kind of just worked toward that, so once we got on her, we started getting those hits.”

SHG (34-8) summoned Bailey Morrow to relieve David in the middle of the rally, but

to no avail.

Bailey Morrow is of no relation to Angie Morrow, but given the Knights’ giddiness after the game, they might have entertained prospects of welcoming her to the extended family.

“This is just a great team, and I’m really sad to see the

seniors go, but we came out with a bang, definitely,” junior center fielder Rachel Goress said. “With the fifth seed in the [sectional], we really showed them who we are.”

Making the second state appearance in school history and the first since 2000, Kaneland’s run has yet to sway interim coach Peter Goff, the school’s athletic director who grinned while maintaining, “This is a one-year thing.”

Goff will be in the rare position of searching for his replacement on the heels of a banner season.

Whether assistant Mike Kuefler might be elevated to the position remains to be seen, but the father of senior lynchpin and catcher Paige Kuefler knows he’s not leaving the program either way.

“You know what, I’m going to stay a Kaneland Knight as long as they’ll let me stay a Kaneland Knight,” he said.

Knights’ late lineup change a hit

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com EAST PEORIA – Long after the Kaneland softball team iced a third-place finish in Class 3A with a six-run fifth inning Saturday, junior center fielder Rachel Goress sported an ice pack on her left shoulder.

Having pinched the rotator cuff in her nonthrowing shoulder during Friday’s state semifinal loss to Marengo, Goress laid down one final sacrifice when the Knights faced Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin for third place.

Remaining in the lineup defensively, Goress yielded her No. 2 spot in the batting order to senior right-hander Angie Morrow, who entered the game with only one official at-bat in 2015.

“It was fine. I had confidence in her,” Goress said. “Even though she didn’t hit (much) all season, I knew that she would be able to hit definitely better than I would be able to.”

Morrow helped the Knights’ attack with a hit in the early stages of Saturday’s fifth-inning outburst and stung the ball sharply throughout the game.

A first-inning groundout to shortstop prevented her from maintaining a lofty 1.000 average – Morrow doubled in her regular-season at-bat – but Morrow didn’t mind.

Convincing Knights coach Peter Goff went seamlessly, too.

“I told him I could bat,” Morrow said.

“I was like, ‘I’ll do it. Why not? I have nothing to lose.’ ” Always in position: Morrow handled Sacred Heart-Griffin in a smooth complete game, but if she had been unable to pitch for any reason, it’s likely Goff would have summoned left fielder Courtney Davis.

Davis threw a five-inning no-hitter against Burlington Central in the Knights’ season opener March 19, an outing she otherwise considers ancient history.

“It just feels like this year has gone so long,” Davis said. “I feel like we’re a new team since then.”

Morrow, for one, no longer is bothered by the pulled wisdom teeth that kept her out during the early season.

Unfortunately, the weather isn’t cooperating. I seriously cannot recall a stretch of weekends that have been decimated this much by rainy weather.

As I sat here writing this Sunday morning, I just received word that I’ve lost another couple hundred dollars.

I was scheduled for a quadruple-header at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva but it has been postponed.

The last dry weekend I had was May 2 and 3. I worked 11 games in a Mokena tournament. Since then, I’ve umpired 27 games during the past six weekends, but I’ve also had 36 postponements because of weather. Ted Williams hitting .406 in 1941 was amazing. The fact that I’m umpiring only .429 of my scheduled weekend games is sickening. That’s close to $2,000 in lost wages. It’s disheartening, and I’m not the only one affected.

Now, let me reiterate that anyone who relies solely on umpiring to make a living is foolish because you just cannot do it at this level. It can be a great summer job,

QUILL THE UMPIRE CHRIS ROLLIN WALKER though, for high school and college students, and it can be nice supplemental income for others. It’s also helped me stay afloat, but the constant rain has me floating up the creek without a paddle.

I know I’m not the only one who is sick and tired of the rain. I can cope with the rain on the weekdays, especially early in the week where I’m likely only working one game or a doubleheader rather than the weekend when I can lose a few hundred dollars.

Jason Toth, a 2013 Batavia grad, is a first-year umpire. I remember umpiring Toth’s 9U games at Bollow Field when his dad and fellow umpire, Chuck Toth, coached him.

Toth is going to be a junior at Illinois State. His love of baseball, the flexibility of choosing his schedule and the opportunity to make a few thousands dollars this summer

are his reasons for umpiring.

The rain is beating him up, too.

“You have to wake up really early on Saturday or Sunday, and with a chance of rain you don’t know if you’re going to work or not,” Toth said. “I love doing it, but I’ve had so many weekends screwed up because of delays and cancellations that it’s become really frustrating.”

North Aurora umpire David Dennis took a new job, which made it impossible for him to work high school games on weekdays, so he’s tried to keep busy on weekends.

“I had half my season washed out,” he said. “It’s been tough. It seems like every weekend I’m having games rained out.”

Geneva umpire David Baker said the rain has been bad, but not as bad as in 2009.

“It was really bad several years ago,” he said. “I’ve lost a good amount of games, bit it could be worse. I’ve probably lost 10 to 12 games in the last month.”

Not every umpire has been

as heavily affected. Apparently not as many umpires are as smart as Tyler Marquardt.

The Warrensville resident, who graduated from Northern Illinois this spring, has been working mostly on the turf fields at the East Side Sports Complex in St. Charles.

“I’ve been pretty lucky. Last weekend I had one cancellation, but that was it,” Marquardt said. “I’ve had some bad weekends, but I’ve been luckier than most. I’m trying to work five or seven games every Saturday and Sunday and I’ve got a lot of them in.”

I haven’t.

Because I have no games to work now, I think I’ll spend my afternoon at the movie theater watching “Love & Mercy.”

I know that won’t be rained out, and I’ve heard that John Cusack’s performance reigns supreme.

I’ve frequently said I’ll umpire as long as I can physically do it because it keeps me active in baseball and I love the game.

I also know the money I make won’t put my kids through college, but for at least this summer, I’m relying a great deal on the income because I’m not working full-time.

Some of my brothers in blue only work the high school season and will only pick up an occasional game at the youth level. I’ve done that before, but this year is different. Although I loved my high school season, and even started working summer high school games last Monday, I’m trying to work as much because I need the money.

Busy weekend schedules of five to seven games a day each Saturday and Sunday can help me pay the mortgage and buy groceries. That’s the nice thing about umpiring – you can fill your schedule as much as you like, and now that we’re in the midst of the busy tournament season, you can pretty much work from morning until night every weekend.

‘Every summer is important’ for Vikings Losing six of top nine players makes for work to be done

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A trip to the boys basketball state tournament last season was an invaluable experience for members of the Geneva basketball team.

Losing six of their top nine players, including standout and Toledo commit Nate Navigato, the Vikings will have a summer that is more important than any.

Two key returning pieces are seniors Bennett Fuzak and Loudon Vollbrecht, both of which will have increased roles both on and off the basketball court.

“Playing the role that I did last season, I feel I have that obligation to take on more of a leadership role this year,” Fuzak said after Geneva’s summer league game Monday. “It’s a new year this year, and last season was great, but it doesn’t guarantee us anything this year. We have a lot of work to do but we’ll see what happens.”

One thing that will remain the same is the height of the Vikings. Both Fuzak and Vollbrecht tower to an imposing 6-foot-8 stature. But height also doesn’t guarantee success Bennett Fuzak for coach Phil Ralston and Geneva this season.

As seen in the first two talks with teams, every coach views summer league games and workouts differently.

This was the case when catching up with Saints head boys basketball coach Pat Woods.

Woods said he doesn’t plan to run many offensive plays during the summer, but rather work on the players seeing the court better.

“We want the kids to work on reads,” Woods said. “We can put plays in and kids can run plays anytime. We really try to emphasize making the right reads based on how the defense is playing during the summer. So, we have stuff to work on, but it’s early and that’s what the summer is for.”

just finished coaching the St. Charles North softball team one week ago Monday. He also happens to be in his fifth season coaching both softball and the boys basketball team at North.

“I have been doing it for a while now,” Poulin said.

“It makes it easier with help from parents and people involved, but it’s what I love to

do so it’s not really a grind if you enjoy it the way I do.”

The North Stars got an early look at rival St. Charles East in both teams’ second game at the Geneva summer camp Monday. If summer league is any indication, which it often isn’t, the Saints and North will have quite the battles with Monday’s action heading into overtime.

Although summer wins and losses are the furthest things from most coaches’ minds in the summer leagues, many North players are getting the chance to prove their worth to Poulin.

Chargers’ Belskis embraces sudden role change, challenge

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com When Brian Casey and Aurora Central Catholic athletic director Sean Bieterman walked into John Belskis’ office a couple weeks ago, Belskis could tell something was up.

But never in his wildest imagination could he have thought it was for the reason he was told.

Casey was leaving the ACC football program for an adminstrative position at his alma mater, Montini, and there would be an opening for the Chargers’ head coaching position.

“You could have given me 100 guesses, and I never would have thought that’s what I was going to hear,” Belskis said.

“It’s a great opportunity for Brian, and, after talking with my wife and son (Johnny, who wil likely be the starting quarterback for the Chargers), I thought this was something I had to do.”

Belskis accepted the offer to become ACC’s football coach, effecSean Bieterman tive immediately. After taking a recent vacation to Florida, there is no time to sit around, with summer camps beginning Monday.

With a roster including what Belskis believes to be only four seniors out for the varsity this season, it is crucial to get to work right away with summer camps.

“With this young of a group, the summertime is going to be so important,” Belskis said. “The plan is to have 95 percent of our offense and defense in by the end of summer, so we are going to need guys there every day ... ready to work.”

Belskis, who had been the Chargers’ defensive coordinator for the past two seasons and is a member of the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame for his 33 years of service at Downers Grove South, said his top priority when accepting the position was to fill his coaching staff. Not only did Casey leave, but three other assistant coaches were lost to other opportunities.

One assistant position has been filled as Belskis and ACC

named Dan Woulfe, who has coached at Waubonsie Valley for the past few seasons, as new defensive coordinator.

“I wanted to make sure to find quality coaches to replace quality coaches,” Belskis said. “We are still looking to fill the rest of the spots, but we are ready to move forward with what we can and are excited for the opportunity.”

Belskis continued to stress how important his time with the team this summer will be. With the expectation of a young team making young team mistakes, Belskis feels the more work the team puts in during the summer will limit those mistakes that are inevitable.

“We know there is going to be a growth process,” Belskis said. “We play a very com-

petitive schedule, and we are going to have to come ready from the beginning. The plan is to be a much better football team at the end of the season than we were to begin with.”

Belskis never could have thought this would be where his summer would take him, but with an inexperienced group and having the coaching experience that he does, he is ready for the challenge.

“Our job as a coaching staff is to put the kids in the best situations to be successful,” Belskis said. “It’s been awhile since this program has won a playoff game, and that will certainly be a goal of ours moving forward. All I can do as a coach is to have this program in a better spot than when I took over, and that’s exactly what I plan to do.”

North product Hirsch to face Cougars on Thursday Milwaukee Brewers prospect and St. Charles North alumnus Zach Hirsch missed a chance to pitch at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark when the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers visited the Cougars last month.

Recovered from recent tenderness in his left, pitching elbow that placed him on the disabled list, Hirsch is set to start Thursday’s series finale against the host Cougars, opposing right-hander Touki Toussaint at 6:30 p.m.

Toussaint was the parent Arizona Diamondbacks’ firstround selection in 2014. The Brewers picked Hirsch, 24, 18 rounds later on the heels of a resurgent collegiate career at Nebraska.

Pitching last week for the first time since May 2, Hirsch defeated Fort Wayne and took a no-decision against Bowling Green in separate starts, spacing 11 hits, two unearned runs, six strikeouts and three walks in 11 innings.

Hirsch is 2-3 with a 2.98 ERA in seven starts over 42⅓ innings this season, striking out 30 and walking five.

Marmion welcomes new faces

First-year Marmion athletic director Andrew Damato officially will take office next month, but he already is facing a department in flux.

Former Cadets baseball coach Dave Rakow announced at season’s end his plans to step down from the position as he shifts to a new position as director of Marmion’s academic center.

In addition, former assistant wrestling coach Donny Reynolds, who served as co-head coach alongside Ryan Cumbee last season, has been elevated to head coach. Cumbee, who will remain active with the wrestling coaching staff, has decided to scale back his duties to focus on his young family and career.

Damato, a 2001 Marmion graduate, replaces Joe Chivari, a fellow Marmion alumnus who has elected to return to teaching full-time in the school’s social studies department after 15 years as AD.

Team USA reclaims Palmer Cup trophy

Europe, 18-12, during this past weekend’s Palmer Cup at Rich Harvest Farms, reclaiming the trophy to take a 10-8-1 lead in the overall series.

The event pits the world’s top collegiate players against one another in match play.

Team USA claimed six of Sunday’s 11 singles matches to win by a comfortable margin. The Americans needed only two points entering play, but counted victories from Hunter Stewart, Beau Hossler, Ollie Schniderjans, Robby Shelton and Lee McCoy. Stewart and Team Europe’s Matthias Schwab, an Austrian who plays alongside Stewart at Vanderbilt, received the Michael Carter Award for exemplary sportsmanship and integrity.

During the closing ceremonies, Team USA’s Maverick McNealy, a Stanford student-athlete, received an exemption into the 2016 Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill.

What’s that noise? Is it a snake? No! It’s a Gromphadorhina portentosa – also known as a hissing cockroach.

Tiny mites live on the bodies of these cockroaches and keep them clean by eating bits of food that cling to the larger bug’s body.

Found in Madagascar, the hissing cockroach is one big bug. It grows to be three inches (8cm) long! It is also about an inch wide, around the size of a small mouse.

looks a little frightening, it is actually harmless. The only thing it does to protect itself from enemies is to hiss at them.

This dark chocolate brown insect with black edges blends well with the piles of leaves and bark it hides under on the forest floor.

How does a pile of rotting leaves with a side of dead fly sound? For the hissing cockroach that sounds like lunch! A hissing cockroach is a scavenger, not a hunter. That means it doesn’t kill for food, but eats whatever it can find on the forest floor, things like rotting plant matter and dead animals.

Cockroaches are considered “living fossils” because they have survived on Earth some 250 million years, appearing long before dinosaurs. More than 3,500 species of cockroaches exist today.

It took a super price to buy this rare Superman handkerchief at a Hake’s Americana & Collectibles online auction. It’s 11 3/4 inches square and sold for $5,705.

It belonged to my great-great-greatgrandparents. It must have been made in the early 1800s. On the hour, a boy and girl pop out of the house-shaped clock and a cuckoo sings. On the half hour, a cuckoo appears and chirps once. I know it is old because it is powered by pinecone-shaped weights on a chain. I have to reset the chain once a week. I have seen many new ones that look like my hand-carved wooden clock but they run on a battery or an electric plug. Can you tell me why the cuckoo clock idea evolved, and what my antique clock is worth?

A: The first cuckoo clocks were made about 1630 in Germany, but it was not until 1738 that the clock like today’s was designed. The maker, inspired by a church organ, created a way to make the bird’s song. He used bellows and whistles to imitate the cuckoo. His first clock was made of paint-decorated wood, and the cuckoo came out of a small door to announce the time. Local craftsmen made many of the cuckoo clocks. The houseshaped clocks were sold by peddlers who carried them from Germany to France and many other parts of Europe.

The design has changed slightly during the past 200 years, reflecting the popular styles of the day. But the house,

the shaped weights and the cuckoo remained. By Victorian times, the building had more decorations. Often, carved birds, leaves, even deer heads and other animals were added. Your style clock probably was made anytime from about 1850 to 1950. Batteries and electric motors were added to many clocks later. But you still can buy a very traditional clock with weights.

Because it is difficult to trace the history of a hand-made piece, collectors tend to buy the clock to use or, if isn’t working, to admire. The case size and quality and added decorations determine value. The greater the number of cuckoo and other moving figures there are, the higher the price. New clocks are sold for $50 to about $350. Old ones are not selling for much more, unless they’re very large or unusual.

It was a surprise when a 1940 handkerchief picturing Superman sold for $5,705 at an online Hakes Americana and Collectibles sale in 2014. Superman was “born” in 1933 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was created by high-school students Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

Detective Comics, Inc. (later DC Comics) bought the idea in 1938. Superman first appeared in a comic book, Action Comics No. 1, in June of that year. He was seen in comic books, radio, movie cartoons, newspaper comic strips, television, movies, video games and even a Broadway show. His likeness appeared on lunch boxes, toys, clothes, sheets, figurines, banks, handkerchiefs, Superman club items, jigsaw puzzles, Halloween costumes, posters, paper dolls, bubble gum and trading cards.

He became an icon, and not only his picture but even his yellow shield with the red “S” is recognized internationally. Collectors want anything related to Superman or his alter ego, Clark Kent.

The rayon handkerchief pictures Superman from the waist up, breaking chains across his chest. It was made in 1940 and has “Superman” and “(c) SUP’N” (copyright for Superman, Inc.) written below the picture. There is one other known handkerchief design with a fullfigure picture of Superman, but it is not as rare as this version. *** Q: I have a smoking cabinet or side table that is 25 inches high, 15 inches wide, and 12 1/2 inches deep. It has two doors and one drawer. The inside of the cabinet is lined with some kind of metal on top, bottom and three sides.

The drawer is not lined. What was it

used for, and is it worth anything?

A: The metal-lined cabinet is a humidor, used for storing cigars, cigarettes or tobacco. The lining controls the humidity for the tobacco. The drawer was used to store smoking accessories. Smoking stands, cabinets and tables were popular in the 1930s and ‘s when smoking cigars and cigarettes was more common. Now that there are fewer smokers, they’re often used as side tables. They sell for about $150 to $200. *** Q: I heard there are different colors for the marks of Japan and that some are rare and some are not. I have several pieces of china made in Japan. Some are marked “Occupied Japan” and some just “Japan.” Some have black marks, some red and some green. Which colors are rare?

A: Marks on Japanese pottery can be found in several colors, including red, green, blue, yellow, brown and black. Some claim certain colors mean the item is worth more. One source says Noritake used a green mark on its “first grade” china and a blue mark on its “second grade” in the early 1900s.

Some think the color indicates when the mark was used. However, this doesn’t seem to be true because the same mark may appear in different colors on similar pieces made the same year. A better indication of age is the wording accompanying the mark. All items imported into the U.S. after 1891 had to be marked with the country of origin. They could be marked “Japan” or “Nippon,” the Japanese word for Japan. Items marked “Made in Occupied Japan” were made between Sept.

9, 1945, and April 28, 1952, during the Allied occupation of Japan. *** Q: I have a very old cuckoo clock.

daughter, “Audra,” got her driver’s license a few months ago and has started pressuring us to put her on our car insurance. When we told her we can’t afford it, and if she wants to be on the insurance she has to get a job and pay for it, she had a temper tantrum.

About a month ago, my husband wanted her to go to the store for him. We live in a rural area and everything is some distance away. After she left, he asked me if I was mad that he let her take the car. I told him I thought he was asking for trouble sending her out with no car insurance. My husband now wants me to let her take me shopping and bring along our two small kids.

No one is a great driver when they first start driving, but she is a beginner without insurance. I have considered calling the police and telling them she’s driving without insurance. What do I do? – No insurance in New York Dear No Insurance: Stick to your

Strengthen thigh muscles to counteract knee pain Dear Doctor K: My 12-yearold daughter has been doing gymnastics for years. Lately she’s complained about pain in her knee. Her doctor says it’s Osgood-Schlatter disease. How serious is this?

Dear Reader: This is a case where the name makes the condition sound worse than it is. Osgood-Schlatter disease is a common, temporary condition.

It causes knee pain in older children and teenagers, especially those who play sports. About 20 percent of kids who play sports develop this condition. It starts when a kid’s growth spurt starts, and major symptoms typically go away at the end of a teenager’s growth spurt.

The condition is basically an “overuse injury.” Kids and teens who participate in activities that require a lot of jumping and bending are more likely to develop Osgood-Schlatter disease.

In these activities, the quadriceps muscle in the front of the thigh pulls tightly against the kneecap and the kneecap’s anchor, the patellar tendon.

Repeated pulling results in pain, swelling, redness and a bony bump in the raised area at the

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff top of the tibia (shinbone). That’s where the patellar tendon attaches to the bone. This part of the knee is particularly vulnerable to stress and injury during the teenage growth spurt. (I’ve put an illustration of knee anatomy on my website, AskDoctorK. com.)

The good news is that continuing to participate in the activity that led to the condition will not cause permanent damage, though it may be uncomfortable. Here are some things your daughter can do before, during and after physical activity to help limit discomfort: • Wear shock-absorbent insoles in sports shoes.

• Use a heating pad or warm, moist compress for 15 minutes before a sports activity.

• If the symptoms worsen following a sports activity, apply a plastic bag of ice, or a cold gel pack to the area. Put a dishcloth or thin towel between the skin and cold pack. Apply the cold for

15 minutes every couple of hours for four to six hours.

• Wear a protective pad to shield the top of the shinbone.

• Elevate her leg when she has knee pain.

• Take over-the-counter medications, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), to fight pain and inflammation.

• Stretch thigh muscles two or three times a day, and always before an activity.

• Do thigh-strengthening exercises.

If your daughter’s knee pain is constant, she may need to stop playing sports for a while, or wear a cast or brace for several weeks. Surgery is rarely needed.

Finally, talk to your daughter’s gymnastics coach. Her coach may also be able to modify the intensity of her training.

Also ask your daughter’s pediatrician if it would be valuable for a physical therapist to teach your daughter some exercises to strengthen the leg muscle.

Last year I was in a similar situation. I was 5 feet 3 inches tall and wore size 18. My sister was 5 feet 2 inches tall and wore a size 3. She was always the beautiful swan, and I was the ugly duckling. She had lots of boyfriends, while I never had a date. In fact, I never even went out of the house on weekends because I didn’t want to see couples having a good time.

After thoughts of hurting myself, I finally decided to ask our family doctor for help, and he started me on a supervised weight-loss program. He also talked to my family, and they all worked together to support my goal to achieve a healthy weight.

It is now eight months since I started my healthy diet and exercise program. Besides the obvious weight loss, I have gained a degree of self-confidence, self-esteem, and I’m finally a happy young girl.

The reason a person loses weight is not to please others; it’s to please yourself. When you start a weight-loss program, you ask yourself, “Who am I doing this for?” It’s important that you lose weight because you want to, not to prove something to anyone else. Trust me when I say that those who love you will help you during the diet phase.

Please follow my example! I’m now a size 10 and I attended the prom this year, so you see that good things happen when you are determined to make positive changes. My boyfriend loves showing me off when we go places, and
